Puig blasts plans for Las Americas
Continued from Front Mr Puig, who contributed much to the town’s construction over the years, added, angrily: “We will hold accountable politicians - because this is enough!” He is railing at the Canarian Government’s last legislature, to promote the renovation of hotels and outdated apartments, managed by public company Gesplan, which is attached to the Ministry of Territorial Policy. The document’s premise, to build with higher volumes and increased height, was approved last month. And the scheme is being exhibited publicly until 6th November. Mr Puig points to the Las Veronicas area - known as the Strip - which, he says, is a plot intended to prevent management from building a nine-story
hotel on the beach, next to the two towers of Tenerife Sol, which could also be extended. “An architectural barrier is created around the coastline,” said Mr Puig. “And if the Las Veronicas owners do not agree - something that seems an impossible task - the Administration will end up demolishing it in four to eight years. “By then, no settlement will be renewed, so the area will be worse than now. In Las Veronicas there is a problem - Police and Health - but the solution is not to flatten existing buildings and build a nine-story hotel by the sea.” He explained that the land on which Las Americas Shopping Centre is located is in a similar situation, where another six-storey hotel is expected to be built.
“What we will do is legalise what Arona Council allowed to build in the past 40 years illegally,” said Puig. “It is a mess!” Another example reported by Mr Puig reflects the measure’s lack of harmony between the
theory and practice. “To a plot aimed at a golf course, they allow recreational uses, such as bars, cafes, clubs, etc, with an area of 44,170sq/m, to be built,” he said. “It demonstrates the ignorance of the draughtsmen about
a golf course and its urban environment. It’s sheer madness!” Mr Puig also reported that one of the areas of great value, Punta del Camisón - in a corner of the famous Golden Mile - has been included in the planning of Los Cris-
tianos and not of Las Americas, which would correspond to the geographical situation. “Understandably, they moved it without any special motivation,” he said. “So if the Plan for Modernisation and Improvement of Playa de Las Americas challenges affecting the plot, end in processing, any urban criteria will not apply.” Those who know Mr Puig, and his history relating to Las Americas, will surely understand why he is so animated about the Canarian Government’s proposals. He has lived and breathed Las Americas for many years, being recognised as one of the founders of the area. Such is his standing that the local council even named a street after him: Avendida Santiago Puig.
Mariano is still on a knife-edge WILL acting Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy regain his seat of power at the head of the Spanish Government? With two weeks to go before, possibly, a new general election, he simply doesn’t know. Socialist voters are evenly divided between those whose priority is stopping Rajoy from returning to office, and those whose main motivation is to avoid sending Spaniards back to the polls. A Metroscopia poll for EL PAÍS shows that 49% of Socialist Party (PSOE) voters believe it
is paramount to stop Rajoy’s Popular Party (PP) from forming a government. But 47% of PSOE voters feel a third election must be avoided at all costs, even if it means watching their party deliver the executive to Rajoy through an abstention at the investiture vote. Should this happen, it would prolong Spain’s 10-month stalemate until 31st October, when the political calendar mandates that King Felipe VI must dissolve parliament and call new elections for December.
However, when asked what would be better for the party itself, 56% of PSOE voters answered “avoiding an election”. This is because polls are forecasting that a third election would favour the PP, which stands to gain as much as five percentage points on the 26th June election, while the PSOE would lose support. Taking all voters into account, 66% said they would rather avoid new elections. This view holds true for supporters of the PP, the PSOE and Ciudadanos, but not of Podemos,
whose voters (60%) clearly prefer to see new elections. The Metroscopia survey also shows a significant shift in views regarding the likelihood of politicians reaching a lastminute deal. A month ago, 68% of respondents were pessimistic about the chances of an accord, but that share has gone down to 37%, while 59% now feel that a deal is possible. This attitude change is because of developing events within the PSOE, which performed poorly at September’s regional elections in
Galicia and the Basque Country. Also, its Secretary-General recently resigned over the issue of abstention, at a highlycharged party meeting in Madrid. The interim management team which took over on 1st October has been pushing the abstention option quietly among party officials. But the final decision must be taken by the Federal Committee, which will likely meet on Sunday, (23rd Oct), a day before King Felipe is scheduled to start a new round of talks with party leaders to test
the political waters. The issue of whether to abstain in Congress is proving so divisive for the Socialist Party that its Catalan branch leader, Miquel Iceta, vows to vote against Rajoy, no matter what the leadership decides. A defiant Iceta told EL PAÍS: “No matter what the cost to me and to us, the Catalan Socialist Party (PSC) will vote No to Rajoy. “We say this because an abstention would be detrimental to Spain, and also to the PSOE, because the opposition would be defused.”

Most-wanted fugitives are warned by Crimestoppers charity…
We’re out to get you!
TEN more of the most-wanted British fugitives, believed to be hiding in Spain’s ex-pat communities, have been revealed by independent UK crimefighting charity Crimestoppers and the National Crime Agency (NCA) in a new appeal.
Publication of the latest list coincides with the 10th anniversary of Operation Captura - a multi-agency campaign which has seen 76 fugitives apprehended out of 86 publicised. The 10 fugitives are wanted by law-enforcement agencies in connection with crimes which include murder, child sexual-exploitation, drug-trafficking, fraud, money-laundering and serious assault. Steve Reynolds, NCA Head of International Operations, said: “The success of Captura demonstrates our relentless pursuit of fugitives. We never give up.” Crimestoppers and the NCA liaise closely with the British Embassy in Madrid and with both
British and Spanish law-enforcement agencies. For people in Spain wishing to pass on information anonymously, there is a dedicated, freephone Spanish telephone number - 900 555 111 - directed to the Crimestoppers’ call centre in the UK. A translation service is available on request. Shane O’Brien, aged 28, (from London): Wanted by the Met Police on suspicion of murder. In October 2015, O’Brien was in a wine bar in Middlesex with several friends. It is alleged that he approached a man called Josh Hanson, who was with his girlfriend at the bar, removed an item from his coat pocket and plunged it into his neck. Josh was pronounced dead at the scene. A £20,000 reward is available for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of O’Brien. He has a birthmark on his face, and a tattoo, Shannon 15-0406, on his back. Jamie Acourt, 40 (South London): Wanted by the Met Police on suspicion of conspiracy to supply cannabis resin between 1st January 2014 and 1st February 2016. Acourt is believed to be a principal member of an organised crime group, involved in the large-scale
supply of cannabis. Jonathon Kelly, 36 (Glasgow): Wanted by Police Scotland on recall to prison to serve remaining sentence of 9 years 10 months for a number of serious assaults. Kelly, who is extremely violent and poses a high risk to both police and members of the public, was convicted at various courts of a number of offences between 2002 and 2010. He received sentences in excess of 16 years, but in September 2013 he was released on licence. He failed to adhere to conditions set. The offences he was convicted of included an assault to severe injury and danger of life, robbery, assault to severe injury and permanent disfigurement. He has a Scottish accent, and has scars on both sides of his face. Stephen Carruthers, 43 (Bury): Wanted by Cumbria Police on suspicion of 18 offences of making indecent photographs of a child. Carruthers was arrested on 27th March 2014 at an Ambleside address, where he was living. A computer recovered was analysed and found to contain 5,332 indecent images of children, including some showing contact sexual abuse
between adults and children. He was interviewed and denied committing any offences. He was given bail to re-attend the police station but didn’t. He has short brown hair or shaved head, and has blue eyes. Sarah Panitzke, 42, (Fulford): Wanted by HMRC for conspiracy to acquire criminal property. Panitzke was a senior member of a crime group involved in a VAT fraud. She controlled the company accounts of many firms remotely, via different IP addresses. Panitzke travelled extensively to further the fraud to places including Dubai, Spain and Andorra. She was responsible for laundering approximately £1bn. Panitzke absconded in May 2013 prior to the end of the trial and was convicted in her absence. She was sentenced to eight years on 22 August 2013. Eighteen members of the crime group received sentences totalling 135 years. She is slim and has a Yorkshire accent. Mark Acklom, 43 (London): Wanted by Avon & Somerset Police on suspicion of fraud by false representation. Acklom allegedly make a number of false representations after starting a romantic relationship with a Bath woman in
January 2012. After saying he had cash-flow problems that were hindering renovation work at a property he wanted them to live in, the woman gave him numerous loans, totalling £850,000. It later transpired that Acklom, who did not own the property, disappeared! He has dark-brown hair and green eyes. Matthew Sammon, 45, (London): Wanted by the Met Police on suspicion of making and possessing indecent photographs of children. On 24th April 2014, a search warrant was executed at his Croydon home because officers believed that indecent images of children had been downloaded on a computer registered at the address. He was not at home at the time. Several hard-drives, computers and USB sticks were seized. He was arrested four days later and was bailed after an interview to attend the police station at a later date. He failed to answer his bail. He has short brown hair and a soft, London accent. We could reduce Architect’s the TF-1 queues Tenerife broadside
THE Circle of Businessmen and Professionals of the South of Tenerife (CEST) has proposed a temporary solution to solve the TF-1 traffic jams on the South motorway between the Las Chafiras and Las Americas links, to the Canarian Government, the Cabildo and the municipalities involved. Roberto Ucelay, President of the local corporate employers, argues that it is possible to implement 11 measures to ease the traffic jams - and it won’t be that costly! To avoid queues at the entrance of Los Cristianos going North, CEST suggests giving priority to vehicles entering from the TF-1 from Adeje to reach the first roundabout, rather than the current entry, from Arona - and from Santa Cruz (which is how it is now). The Circle also proposes that Council technicians study how to prioritise the transit of vehicles on the roundabout below to go to Arona, since existing traffic stop at this point. Another idea is to give
preference to vehicles leaving from Los Cristianos by Juan Carlos I Avenue to Arona and Santa Cruz, so that the right lane - closest to Guaza - is delimited by a solid line. The possibility arises of using the route included in the partial plan to have a third, straight, exit lane on to the motorway. In addition, CEST understands that simply reducing the size of the main roundabout in los Cristainos will earn more circulation space. The group also proposes to reduce traffic jams at the roundabout giving access to Chayofita, by removing the access traffic lights on the right - which serves to go to Chajofe boulevard - and to replace the zebra crossing with an elevated walkway. They also believe that they can reduce traffic jams on the Las Americas exit main roundabout that leads traffic to Santa Cruz, by removing the ‘give way’ sign on the inside lane, and having a a solid line painted to prevent access to Siam Park. That would mean
vehicles leaving from Las Americas could connect with the TF-1 or Los Cristianos without stopping, giving a continuous flow of traffic. As for the tremendous traffic jams at Las Chafiras, coming from the Adeje direction, CEST believes that an underpass below the main roundabout, serving motorway traffic as well as those driving up from the coast or the two golf clubs, would provide the perfect solution, although extremely costly! Guaza, another hotspot on the South motorway, also appears in this CEST proposal, but not heavily because this junction was reformed a few years ago. Ornella Chacon, the Canarian Government’s Department of Public Works chief, welcomed the CEST proposals, saying: “We believe that many of the 11 measures can be addressed almost immediately. “But we are committed, technically, to evaluate more thoroughly to see the viability and, if needed, add some to the study.”
Vueling’s desperate traveller evaluation A TRIPADVISOR poll, which ranked hundreds of airlines from around the globe and listed those which received more than 400 reviews, has voted Spanish company Vueling the world’s third-worst by air passengers.
The top group all had an average rating of 4.5 and were placed in order, judged on which had the most five-star reviews. First, second and third went to Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Air New Zealand re-
spectively. The lowest airlines all received an average of three out of five, and so were evaluated by which had the most one-star reviews. And worst than Vueling were Frontier and Spirit, which finished rock-bottom.
AN award-winning architect, who designed the Santa Cruz Auditorium and Opera House in 2003, has described Tenerife in a new book as the backside (polite version) of Europe.
Valencia-born Santiago Calatrava also said the Tenerife Auditorium site was “a slag-heap of a beach” as a prelude to an astonishing outburst. Until his comments emerged last week in the book Calatrava (Viajes arquitectónicos por la seducción y el repu-
dio) Calatrava (architectural trips seduction and rejection), written by Llàtzer Moix, he was worshipped for his imaginative and dynamic design of the Santa Cruz buildings. But his tirade seemed designed to insult the Cabildo and the people of Tenerife in general. With a large helping of prima-donna, the architect insisted that Tenerife didn’t deserve him, or his work. Enrique Amigo, former technical manager of the Cabildo’s special projects, retaliated with revelations of a lessthan-happy working relationship. This included late changes to plans and rudeness to staff. And
the Zurich-based Calatrava made late-night phone calls, complaining about his Tenerife accommodation in the Hotel Mencey, which is the flagship hotel of the capital city. Despite the friction, a real Mother of Pearl emerged, with the huge, curved wave putting the Auditorium and Tenerife on the international map for concerts and musical shows. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, reacting to the designer’s outburst, said Calatrava had a lot to learn about how to treat people. Needless to say, Mr Calatrava isn’t expected to be consulted on any new Tenerife projects … not even sand castles!

Binter’s The International Day airline award against Breast Cancer THEY started out linking the Canary Islands only, and Binter airlines has been rewarded for maintaining those community services, and also for expanding into new, interesting routes.
Those were the reasons given for their 2016 European Regional Airline Award at last week’s presentation in Madrid. It was the company’s sixth success in this category, and it coincided with them buying six top-of-the-range planes, expanding their total to 18. Binter, based at Gando airport in Gran Canaria, was launched in
1990 as part of Iberia, and then sold to private investors in 2002. In recent years the airline has spread its wings to serve Funchal, Lisbon, and Cape Verde. The six new planes are ATR 72 600 twin engine turbo props, similar to its 12 earlier models. The latest 600 range, introduced just a year ago, has greener, energy-saving features. The planes, ideal for short and medium-distance hops, can carry 78 passengers. The latest award came from the ERA (association of regional airlines for Europe),which covers 52 airlines, plus a further 142 linked service companies. Proud Binter President, Pedro Agustin del Castillo accepted the award at the Madrid ceremony.
Optimistic companies have thriving outlook BUSINESS confidence has risen 2.1% in the Canary Islands going into the year’s fourth quarter, which places the Archipelago as the fourth most-optimistic self-governing community. The stats, released last Friday by the National Statistics Institute (INE), make it clear that 26% of Canarian entrepreneurs are considered optimistic, 57.4% have a normal confidence and 16.6% are pessimistic. In the whole country, the Harmonised Business Confidence Indicator (ICEA) has already risen 0.2% in the fourth quarter, thanks to the improved perception of the current situation. With this rise in confidence, the Indicator has strung together a trio of positive quarters since the 1.3% fall in the January-March period - the first drop in nearly three years. The INE data points to an improvement in perception as the current quarter gets under way, even though the
percentage of companies who believe their business will be favourable between October and December stands at 18.9%, which is 1.4% lower than the previous quarter. And while pessimism from businessmen regarding the immediate future fell slightly from 21.4% in the third quarter to 20.6% in the fourth - those who believe their companies will carry on normally increased from 58.3% to 60.5%. This improved perception of the current situation is a result of increased businesses who say their firms have evolved favourably in the last three months, and the slight decrease in those who believe they behaved unfavourably. The ICEA, which has a quarterly basis and is comparable at European level, is the first opinion poll conducted by the statistical agency. It is drawn from a representative sample of business establishments.
ADEJE Council’s department of health protection and quality of life, has been taking part in numerous events to mark International Day against Breast Cancer, which was celebrated on Wednesday.
Information tables have been placed by the Town Hall door, and in the town’s main Health Centre, with members of the Spanish Cancer Association (AECC) and the Association of Women with Breast Cancer (AMATE) on hand to talk to the public. “With these activities, we are continuing to distribute information regarding this illness, helping women, the main sufferers, to cope, and offering assistance where and when needed,” said local Councillor Amada Trujillo Bencomo. Apart from the tables, the Council has hung a large poster by the Town Hall’s outer
wall, and, on Wednesday night, the Plaza de
España was lit up in pink the colour associated with breast cancer. “The Council offers a range of initiatives in this area workshops, talks, debates and sessions with experts in the field,” said Cllr Bencomo. “We also offer firstperson advice for those who have had mastectomies, information about lymphedema and differ-
ent rehabilitative methods, including aquatic, for those who need assistance. “Psychological attention is also available, and we work with the AECC to bring patients from Adeje Health Centre to the Candelaria hospital for treatments.” This year, Adeje Council will again be an official sponsor of the colourful, annual Walk for Life/Carrera por la Vida in December. And, as usual, all funds raised will go towards those associations working with cancer victims, and for investment in research.
Watch your passport! IN a bid to drive down passport thefts, the British Consulates in Las Palmas and Tenerife have partnered with CICAR, one of the biggest car hire firms in the Canaries, to reduce theft from vehicles.
In the past nine months, more than 450 British holiday-makers have lost their passports in the Canary Islands, with car crime accounting for around one in 11 of these cases. From this autumn, CICAR customers will be greeted with warning signs in the company’s customer service areas. And they will receive tips for keeping their belongings safe,
along with their hire contract. Being aware of the risk, and taking a few simple steps to safeguard your valuables, can reduce the likelihood of falling prey to thieves: *Don’t leave your passport or other valuables in a parked car. Many holidaymakers hire cars to explore hidden beaches, or practise water sports, in the Canary Islands. Thieves target parked vehicles at secluded beaches
and tourist hotspots. *If you have to leave belongings in the car, ensure they are locked out of sight in the boot before you park *Wherever possible, park in secure carparks in well-lit areas Helen Keating, Tenerife’s British Vice-Consul, said: “This initiative in the Canary Islands complements our continued work with local and airport authorities to drive down the number of stolen passports. “We welcome our
new partnership with CICAR, and we’re sure this campaign will help many Brits avoid difficult and upsetting circumstances. We hope to see other car-rental companies getting involved, too. “Take measures to protect your passport and avoid losing out on precious holiday time and paying out £100 for an emergency replacement!” This project, part of a global Foreign Office campaign urging Britons to be #TravelAware when abroad, has been spearheaded in the Canary Islands by Helen Keating and Gran Canaria’s British ViceConsul, Esther Martin, with their respective consular teams. A similar initiative in Malaga last year resulted in an 18% reduction in British passport theft from cars.

Youth Centre celebrates
The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com
The wind of change THE Scorpions sang about it, and we’ve experienced it at Oasis Fm & Canarian Weekly HQ, as this week has brought about some significant changes on the radio and in the newspaper.
Some people don’t like change, but some people embrace it and use it as a positive … as the Chinese proverb says: “When the wind of change blows, some people build walls, others build windmills.” We’re definitely a team of windmill builders and will continue to move forward! On Oasis Fm, Jenny T is a welcome, refreshing change to morning radio, and, even after her first week, has received rave reviews from listeners old and new. I’m sure she’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but after nearly 20 years of male breakfast-show presenters, she’s a windmill, not a wall! And anyway why have a cuppa tea …when you can have Jenny T! Mad Mel Faulkner has returned to Oasis Fm, sounding as though she’d never been off air, And this week sees some more additions with Kirk Readings,
DJ Ben Simington, and Danny and Elliot, from Dragalicious, all starting new shows which will further enhance the new sound of Oasis Fm and inject some fun. Here at the Canarian Weekly, the fourth editor has parted since it started, nearly 20 years ago. That means it’s almost 650 issues since I took it over in November 2003. I’m finally going to have my own say, taking the reins of this fantastic newspaper and moving it forward. We have two new people out on the streets, at press conferences, and at events, getting the low-down on everything local, implementing more local news, more variety of local sport and more local events happening on your door step. Ultimately, embrace change. It may take a short while for us to get the changes right, or for readers or listeners to accept them. But just when the caterpillar thought life was over, it became a butterfly… enjoy the ride!

TO celebrate Adeje Youth Centre’s 10th anniversary, activities are being organised for the borough’s youngsters.
During the second half of October, there will be a series of leisure and learning events designed “to meet the needs of our young people in an ongoing way and in a way that meets their needs and gives them space for their ideas”, says Zebenzui Chinea Linares, the Councillor with responsibilities for this area. Activities begin today (Friday), with a workshop on videogame development for those aged 14-plus.
It’s a four-hour training event in which participants will learn about the creative tools, use of information and technical programmes, etc. Tomorrow (Saturday), an event paying homage to Granadilla man Isaac de Vega takes place. He was born in 1920 and contributed to the Canarian writing boom with his emblematic Fetasa book. On Sunday, participants can enjoy a walk through the northern borough of La Esperanza. This is a four-hour ramble, of medium-difficulty level, to be followed by a workshop on the traditional Salto del Pastor, a rural practice in the Canaries, with a
talk n the activity and the legends and myths of the region. Next Saturday (29th Oct), there will be a mountain-bike event Chinyero - Arenas Negras in the El Tanque borough as part of a series of activities encouraging young people to practise alternative activities and move away from consumerism. Finally, until the last day of the month, the Youth Centre is running an exhibition Ser y Durar (“to be and to last”) o
of 23 photographs related to Parkour (a discipline using movements developed from military, obstacle-course training). The photographs have been taken by, and feature, members of the Constant Motion youth collective, who have been practising this sport in Adeje for five years. This exhibition is, say organisers, designed to show that training is about much more than jumping a ditch or scaling a wall. It’s also about respect, caring for the environment as well - a space where people can work to improve themselves. It is also a sport that requires technique, discipline, strength and consistency.
Computer workshop for Arona youngsters ARONA Youth Council and the CajaCanarias Foundation are hoping to teach youngsters in the municipality the basic tools to get started in the world of creation, scheduling of games, different training action and the leisure industry. The workshop, which take place on Thursday (27th Oct) from 4pm at El Fraile’s House of
Youth, is part of the specific training provision for people aged between 14 and 35. Using Factory 360, it
introduces young people to the gaming world as part of the creative process, while learning about the world of computer programming. The workshop Scratch, a programming language with a graphical interface, is easily used. It consists of six blocks, intertwined as pieces of a puzzle.
The activity will last about three hours and is free. But preregistration is a must because places are limited - on a firstcome, first-served basis. For more information on content and registration call 010 (922 761 600 for calls made from outside the municipality) or email juventud@ arona.org.

Equality grows in rural areas THE International Day of Rural Women took place last week, and there was a well-attended conference in Adeje on the role of women in rural life in Tenerife.
A similar conference took place days earlier in La Guancha, in the North. Adeje’s eighth annual meeting of Rural Women of Tenerife, organised by the Cabildo’s Agricultural and Rural Development division and the local Council, was held under the slogan, “Sowing the seeds of equality leads to a balanced crop”, and was attended by over 100 women, all working in the agricultural sector. The day began at 10am with a visit to the Montesdeoca Dairy. It is an enterprise run by Ángeles García, which has won numerous awards nationally and internationally for the quality and variety of its produce: cheeses, butter, goat’s milk yoghurt, and wines, among other goods. And, naturally, the women were also invited to sample some of the produce. The day continued with presentations at Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA) by Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Jesús Morales, the Cabildo’s Agricultural Councillor, both of them stressing “the im-
portance of women in this sector in the Canaries, and in Tenerife in particular”. The Mayor added: “Women have always been the motor of our society. On their shoulders has fallen the responsibility of caring for the family, the home, and more, and under unequal conditions.
“In the world of agriculture, women have also suffered discrimination, and, for that reason I want to underline how important and vital their contribution is.” Morales said: “We want to guarantee with this project the fundamental, equal opportunities for women, and establish open forums,
where there can be an exchange of ideas, given the low visibility women have had in the agricultural sector up to now.” He added that it was important to increase awareness, generally, of the work women achieve in the farming and agricultural sectors. A manifesto on behalf of rural women was read, including a call for better public initiatives favouring rural enterprise, as well as technological innovation, in the sector. Participants also welcomed the development at regional level of the law of shared titles, (Ley de Titularidad Compartida), which was working directly to given legal representation to women as partners in agricultural endeavours.

Contracts boom in the tourism sector TENERIFE tourism sector last month generated a total of 13,037 contracts - up 12.4% over 2015, and adding up to 436 more contracts. The figures, which came from the Canary Islands Employment Observatory, were analysed by Tenerife’s Department of Tourism Research. Unlike what happened in previous years, said Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, recruitment recorded in the summer period “not only has increased but has also maintained a lower seasonality, with hiring figures, minus large fluctuations, rotating around 13,000 contracts a month.” Hospitality hiring in September totalled 9,433 people (592 more contracts), which was 6.7% more than the previous year. This increase was mainly through the
dynamism of the food and beverages services’ sector, which increased hiring by 15.2%, against the slight decline experienced in accommodation services (-1.7%). Cabildo Tourism Minister Alberto Bernabe also highlighted the good results in the year to date, with 104,139 new contracts until September (+ 14.4%). “That’s 43% of all contracts signed in Tenerife in the first nine months of the year for the tourism sector,” he said. As for unemployment data, September represented a decrease of 2.5%, with a total of 20,433 jobless people in the sector. Better still is the situation in the entire Tenerife economy, with a 3.2% decrease in the number of unemployed, and, for the fourth consecutive month, figures below the 100,000 jobless barrier - unheard of since April 2009!
Cave etchings are 14,500 years old! MORE than 50 cave etchings, thought to be around 14,500 years old, have been found in Spain’s Basque village of Lekeitio, in northern Spain. Regional official Unai Rementeria announced the discovery, saying the etchings were a “treasure of mankind,” and “of exceptional technical quality and visibility”. Experts have praised the etchings as the “most spectacular” in the Iberian peninsula. Photos released by Diputacion Foral de Bizkaia feature cave engravings representing animals such as horses, bi-
sons, lions or goats. And in Lekeitio’s Armintxe cave, there are rock carvings of goats, horses and, for the first time, at least two lions. The Bizkaia region borders the Cantabria region, home to the famous Altamira cave paintings, housed in Spain’s treasured, prehistoric cave art site - also known as the Sistine Chapel of Paleolithic Art.

Milestone for Health Ministry as Hepatitis C sufferers cured NEARLY 60,000 patients in Spain were treated for the Hepatitis C virus, using latest next -generation anti-viral drugs, between 1st January last year and 15th September 2016.
It was a European milestone because Spain was the only country in the EU in which so many people received these innovative treatments. The information was provided by regional governments to the Spanish Ministry of Health, Social Services and Equality, which coordinates the Strategic Plan for Tackling Hepatitis C (PEAHC). It is also responsible for therapeutic evaluation, and keeping track of the number of patients treated. The main goal of this plan, approved in
March 2015 by the Interregional Council, was to ensure equal access for 95,000-plus people - according to regional government figures - diagnosed with Hepatitis C in Spain. Of these, 51,964 were patients with F2, F3 and F4 degrees of fibrosis, who were given priority when receiving treatment. And the plan implemented to treat this issue was a world first.
At present, thanks to the joint effort made by professionals, regional authorities and the Ministerial department, most of these patients have now been treated. Many others, with lower degrees of fibrosis, have also been treated, receiving similar priority through various circumstances. The Health Ministry has highlighted
the importance of the healthcare cohesion actions, and the success achieved in the case of Hepatitis C - practically all those treated are now recovering! Both the Scientific Advisory Committee, chaired by Joan Rodés, and the Institutional Technical Committee, on which the regional governments are represented, met at the Health Ministry to as-
sess the scope of the actions carried out, and to plan the next steps. The two meetings were chaired by Javier Castrodeza, General Secretary for Healthcare and Consumer Affairs. And the Scientific Committee analysed the information provided by the regional governments. It was a preliminary step towards incorporating a review of the therapeutic strategy into the PEAHC, so that it can be discussed by the Institutional Technical Committee. Also, work has been completed on designing the survey for detecting hidden Hepatitis C - in other words, undiagnosed cases - and field-work will begin at the start of 2017. The first data regarding the compulsory communication of new Hepatitis C cases is also being collected, and training guides for primary healthcare professionals are being finalised.
Car-share company is breath of fresh air THE distinctive b l u e - a n d -wh ite electric vehicles owned by carsharing company Car2go - part of Germany’s Daimler-Mercedes Benz group - are now a familiar in downtown Madrid.
In fact, the cars’ rollout in the Spanish capital - a year on from their launch - has been so successful that Thomas Beermann, the man responsible for Car2go’s European operations, describes it as the company’s best-ever! And the numbers seem to back that up. The company now has more than 112,000 users in Madrid, and its fleet of 500 Smart Fortwo cars has already trav-
elled 5.8 million kilometres for a saving of 568 tons in CO2. And that in a city which has long been plagued by pollution. On top of that, Madrid can boast of Car2go’s greatest number of vehicles per user, while each of the firm’s cars in the capital is hired out from 12 to 15 times daily. “When you are look-
ing at such high, dailyusage rates, there will always be issues related to the flexible carsharing model, but we try and respond fully to these,” he says. In more good news for the company, initial problems with vandalism seem to have become a thing of the past, with no incidents reported since it complained to the authori-
ties that 60 of its vehicles had been damaged. The Madrid Taxi Association, most active in opposing the entry of transport service Uber into the Spanish market, denied that it had anything to do with the vandalism. In fact, Beermann insists the company has good relations with taxi organisations in the cities where it operates. “We see ourselves as providing a service that complements their activities,” he says. “Car2go doesn’t compete with public transport in cities. Instead, it is a useful addition because there are a lot of situations where people who live downtown prefer individual transport instead of buses, underground trains or taxis.” He cites such examples as trips that would require a lot of changes, or weekend journeys,
when public transport is less frequent. Car2go’s Madrid fleet of 500 cars has already saved 568 tons of CO2 emissions, and the company is now looking to extend its service beyond the 53sq/km in which it now operates. The vehicles are more than capable of “going to the airport and back”, adds Beermann, as long as all trips begin and end in the current operational zone. There are no plans to change the company’s current pricing structure in Madrid, according to the Car2go executive. Most Car2go users in the city are aged 26-35, while men account for 70% of customers. The average trip time is 2030 minutes, with peak periods being from Noon to 3pm, and then again from 6-9pm.
Suspect thief nabbed NATIONAL Police arrested a 44-year-old man, alleged to have stolen 850 euros from a hotel basement nightclub in Arrecife, Lanzarote. Following a complaint by the club owner, the suspect, who had a police record, was held on suspicion of burglary. The accused had gained access into the building through a hotel ceiling, causing damage amounting to 500 euros.

Six are arrested with dodgy gear
NATIONAL Police officers have arrested five men and a woman, suspected of selling fake Polo tops in Santa Cruz second-hand market. Investigations into the crime against “intellectual property” began in mid-July after police received a complaint from a person representing a famous brand of clothes. For several weeks, they watched the market’s clothing stalls and spotted that several of them had casual tops featuring the Polo logo, which were being passed off as genuine. The operation ended when the police seized 141 items of the dodgy clothing and arrested the six people, who faces charges.

N E R V O U S excitement filled the backstage changing area, while, out front, designers and fashion retailers filled the seating close to the catwalk.
Arona Fashion Week was ready to strut its stuff in front of an eager public in Avenida Las Americas. Other events, including the search for The New Face earlier in the week at the Auditorium Infanta Leonor, Los Cristianos, had encouraged the next generation. And the afternoon fashion show had seen 25 of them take to the narrow stage. An afternoon of fashion shopping promotions at nearby stores gave people a chance to top up their own style before the big evening event. As a U2 classic belted out from the speakers, the first of
the night-time models hit the floor, with Nina Kavaliova designs the first to be aired. By this time, many shoppers had taken to the Safari Centre restaurants and terraces, with cocktails and mojitos clinking as they were given a bird’s-eye view of the action below. Arona Fashion Week is a showcase for the many creative talents
in Tenerife. It is also a welcome boost for the 2,500 business people in the region’s fashion sector. The catwalk was swarmed all night, and the stage was a magnet to the Saturday night revellers, enjoying the free show. Plans are already afoot to make next year’s event even bigger and more glittering.

Our other car has been with the mechan-

You get a helmet, without any other protection - no gloves, no coat or boots! And for those who want to ride the bike, it is their responsibility. But what if they fall over?” He added: “Under these circumstances, some officers have refused to go on a motorcycle. They use them for emergencies only.”

Beer festival cheer THE annual Santa Cruz Beer Festival was staged last week “to encourage the life of the city and, especially, to generate economic activity and create opportunities for jobs”.
Those were the thoughts of Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez, who said the capital city’s strength was in organising leisure activities and revitalising businesses. His intention is to match other festivals, held in recent months, which achieved great public success. But the Mayor admitted that the City Council’s main objective was to generate economy and, also, contribute to
a comprehensive and attractive leisure activity. He recalled the successes with private initiative in this year’s Santa Cruz Out2, and the Sunday shopping days. Bermudez said the city would continue to stage events for the rest of the year, with opportunities for family recreation - for mum, dad and kids. He finished with thanks for the collaboration and like-minded involvement of the city’s entrepreneurs. The Beer Festival, sponsored by Heineken, occupied a 5,000sq/m site, with six “foodtrucks” and four tents, dedicated entirely to the festival. There was also live music, with groups and performances by various DJs.
Calais Jungle kids are joining families in UK O FF I C I A L S from Britain and France have been registering unaccompanied children in the “Calais Jungle”, who are hoping to join their relatives in the UK.
It is believed that a significant number of young refugees will have arrived in the UK from the migrant camp this week, says the BBC. The Children’s Commissioner for England has previously said that about 300 children in the camp, from countries like Syria and Afghanistan, will come to the UK. And French authorities
say they will close the camp by the end of the year An estimated 10,000 or so people are living in the Jungle, near the Calais port and close to the 31-mile Channel Tunnel. Many of the migrants in northern France attempt to reach the UK by boarding lorries as they approach ports, or the Tunnel. French President Francois Hollande wants to move the inhabitants it holds to reception centres across the country and demolish the camp. Aid groups have raised concerns that the planned closure will lead to children disappearing before they are processed. But Home Office
officials in Calais have been focusing first on unaccompanied minors who have the right to join relatives under EU legislation. A separate registration process will take place for vulnerable children who do not have family in the UK. Under EU-wide regulation, asylum claims must be made in the first safe country a person reaches. But children can have their claim transferred to another country if they have family members living there. British law also requires the government to arrange for the transfer to the UK and support of unaccompanied refugee children from Europe.
Home Secretary Amber Rudd, who says the government is moving quickly, wants as many children as possible brought to the UK before the French close the camp. However, the Safe Passage charity, working alongside the government, says it has not yet been shown any operational plans, setting out how the children will be transferred. Red Godfrey-Sagoo, Operations and Programme Delivery Consultant, told the BBC: “There has been a marked increase in activity, both from the French authorities and the UK authorities on trying to work out how to get this done quickly. That has been noted.
“Does it mean that we, technically, have seen any operational plans on how it’s going to be delivered? We haven’t seen that yet, so we still ask those questions.” She told Radio 4’s Today programme that she believed the Home Office was working towards taking unaccompanied minors “next week at some point”. The Local Government Association, representing local authorities in England and Wales, has said that councils will require long-term funding from government to ensure the children’s support is properly funded”. Meanwhile, it has been reported that French Housing Minister Emmanuelle Cosse
has said the camp will be dismantled “when all the conditions for success are in place”. A French news agency quoted the minister as saying that it was “out of the question to leave these people living any longer in that mud and that distress”, adding that another winter in the Jungle was “impossible”. Hollande has promised to set up “reception and orientation centres” to take in asylum seekers. The President added that a “dignified welcome” would be given to people who filed for the right to asylum. But he warned that those who were unsuccessful would be deported.

Thailand Prince wants to continue mourning father THAILAND’S Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn wants to keep his coronation on hold for at least a year in a country still grieving for its much-loved leader.
King Bhumibol Adulyadej died last week, and the nation’s outpouring of grief was televised throughout the world. Now, the Crown Prince himself says he wants more time to mourn his father. Former Prime Minister Prem Tinsulanonda is standing in as regent, while current Prime Minister Prayuth Chanocha sought to reassure Thais about the succession in a TV address last Saturday, reassuring them they should not worry. This issue was discussed when Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn summoned the regent
and Gen Prayuth for an audience, according to the latter. The 64-year-old Crown Prince “asked the people not to be confused or worry about the country’s administration, or even about the succession”, said Gen Prayuth in a TV statement. “He said at this time that everyone is sad; he is still sad, so every side should wait until we pass this sad time.”
Questions about the capabilities of the Crown Prince have been raised in the past, although the strict lesemajeste laws prevent any open discussion of these. Gen Prayuth, who took power in a 2014 military coup, which overthrew the civilian government, has promised elections next year. The monarchy is seen as a unifying force in Thailand at times of
political upheaval, and King Bhumibol, who died aged 88, was a figure revered by many Thais. The military government has made clear that Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn will be the new king, reports the BBC’s Jonathan Head in Bangkok, but it just isn’t clear when this will happen. The military has traditionally been intensely loyal to the monarchy. Thailand is beginning a year of official mourning, and entertainment such as TV shows and sports events have been cancelled or toned down. Many Thais are wearing black, and mourners have continued to converge on the Grand Palace, in central Bangkok, to pay their respects to the late king by signing a book of condolences. It is unclear when his cremation will take place. But it is not expected until the official, one-year mourning period is over.

Golden girl Jess is slammed by trolls
OLYMPICS’ golden girl Jessica Ennis-Hill has been the subject of appalling internet trolls for speaking out against Ched Evans two years ago.
The 2012 Games gold medallist has been called a “f****** whore” and “a sl**”, while others have demanded that the athlete apologise for “tarnishing the footballer’s name”. Footballer Evans’s rape conviction was quashed by a judge last Friday on appeal, and one of his fans tweeted: “I’d love for a family member of hers to get accused of rape and see her opinion on it then.” Another branded her “a horrid woman”, while a third demanded: ‘Apologise to my boy.’ In 2014, Jess voiced
concern when Sheffield United announced plans to re-sign the Welsh footballer, who had played several times for his country. The 30-year-old athlete from the same city, who has now retired, had a stand named in her honour at the club’s Bramall Lane ground following her Olympic triumph at the 2012 London Games. But she received rape threats after saying she would ask for her name to be removed from the stand if Evans were resigned by the club. It comes as the footballer’s accuser, who has already been forced to move at least five times since trolls breached her rights to anonymity, was repeatedly identified on social media after last Friday’s verdict. A spokesman for Miss Ennis-Hill declined to comment.

Who’s dropped a clanger?
YORK Minster’s bells will remain silent until next year, following the mass sacking of 30 volunteer ringers ahead of a new team being recruited. More than 11,000 people have signed a petition calling for their reinstatement. The voluntary bellringers were “stunned” when told their services were no longer required - and they were asked to hand in the key fobs which gave them access to the bell tower. Alice Etherington, the bell-ringer who started the petition, told Sky News: “It’s not the way to go about changing things and getting people loyal and dedicated to you, when you already have people loyal and dedicated to you and the services. “We adore the Minster; we adore our community life there. We’re part of it and we feel shunned.” The bells have been silent since the announcement at last
Tuesday’s meeting, which means no festive bells this Christmas or New Year - a break in a tradition dating back to the 14th Century. The sackings have also put an abrupt end to 30 years of Minster bell-ringing for former ringing-master Peter Sanderson. “There’s a mixture of emotions,” he said. “I’m obviously very upset - upset for the rest of the team as much as anything else, obviously. “There were feelings of anger and frustration as well, because we don’t understand why they’ve taken this action.” The Minster plans to appoint a new, paid Head of Bell Tower, who will then recruit new volunteers. In a statement it said: “The Chapter of York is committed to having a fully-trained, motivated and engaged body of staff and volunteers by 2020. “Since 2014, we’ve been working with our
groups of volunteers to introduce a consistent standard of recruitment, induction, training and development. “It is also critically important to ensure that there is a consistent approach to health and safety, governance and risk-management across all of our volunteer teams. “In order to make these changes, we sometimes need to close existing volunteering roles so that we can move forward with the new processes. This is what has happened with our bellringers.” The statement added: “It does mean that they will no longer have access to the bell tower: that is non-negotiable as Chapter is responsible for the safety and security of all of the Minster’s spaces.” The axed bell-ringers have been told they will be free to apply for the new volunteer roles, as and when they become available.
Countries to fight climate pollution
IN a major effort to fight climate change, up to 200 countries have agreed a deal to limit the use of greenhouse gases.
Talks to clamp down on hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, were described as the first test of global force since the historic Paris Agreement to cut carbon emissions last year.
The HFCs, used in air conditioners and refrigerators, are described as the world’s fastestgrowing climate pollutant. The agreement was announced at the weekend after all-night negotiations at a conference in the Rwandan capital Kigali. It caps and reduces the use of HFCs in a gradual process, starting in 2019. America, the world’s second-largest polluter,
will be among the first nations to tackle the menace. More than 100 countries, including China, the world’s top carbon emitter, will start taking action by 2024, when HFC consumption levels should peak. Clare Perry, UK climate campaign leader with the Environmental Investigation Agency, said the response by so many countries was a “very significant achievement”.
Corbyn ‘in denial’ over Labour’s anti-Semitism LABOUR leader Jeremy Corbyn, who suggested that a highly-critical cross-party report on the issue was biased, has been accused of being in denial about anti-Semitism in the Party.
The interim head of the powerful Commons Home Affairs Select Committee, which found that Corbyn had failed to provide “consistent leadership” in tackling the problem within the party, described his response as “deeply disappointing”. Corbyn had indicated the report was biased against the party and described its criticism of an inquiry into the issue by Labour peer
Baroness Chakrabarti as “unfair”. Tim Loughton, Acting Chairman of the influential Committee of MPs, criticised the Labour leader’s reaction. The Conservative MP told the Murnaghan programme on Sky News: “I’m afraid he’s still in denial, and that sort of response is deeply disappointing for all
members of the committee.” He said the report investigated anti-Semitism within all political parties, and added: “This is not about trying to score points off Jeremy Corbyn, and I’m disappointed that it seems to have been accepted by him in that manner, because that doesn’t do any of us any good.” The report also questioned whether Corbyn “fully appreciates” the nature of postwar antiSemitic a b u s e a n d claimed he had created a “safe sp a c e” for it. In the report, Labour was accused of “incompetence” over its handling of high-profile allega-
tions of anti-Semitism, including those involving former London mayor Ken Livingstone and Jackie Walker, recently removed as ViceChairwoman of the pro-Corbyn Momentum group. The chair of the Jewish Labour Movement said the “litmus test” of the party’s response to anti-Semitism is whether it expelled Mr Livingstone, who was suspended in April after he claimed Hitler had supported Zionism in the early Thirties. Jeremy Newmark told the Murnaghan programme: “One of the real litmus tests as to whether or not the party has moved on, over the issue of anti-Semitism, is whether or not, in a post-Chakrabarti Labour Party, there is still space for people like Ken Livingstone. “Over an extended period of time, he almost built a career out of calibrating those kinds of insults to cause the maximum hurt, pain
and offence towards Jewish people. “The party was right to suspend him; that was a step in the right direction, but now they need to finish the job.” Newmark acknowledged Corbyn’s rhetoric on anti-Semitism has “got better”, but called for concrete action, and the implementation of the recommendations in the Chakrabarti report. Livingstone, meanwhile, told Sky News he was “simply stating historical fact” with his comments about Hitler, which were described by the committee as “unwise, offensive and provocative”. The committee welcomed the inquiry, headed by Chakrabarti and set up by Corbyn. But it but expressed doubts about its independence after the former Liberty director subsequently joined Labour and accepted a peerage. She was then appointed as Shadow Attorney
General in his latest front-bench reshuffle. But Corbyn claimed the inquiry “violated natural justice” by refusing Lady Chakrabarti’s request to appear before it. The Labour leader said: “The report’s political framing and disproportionate emphasis on Labour, risks undermining the positive and welcome recommendations made in it. “Although the committee heard evidence that 75% of anti-Semitic incidents come from far-right sources - and the report states there is no reliable evidence to suggest anti-Semitism is greater in Labour than other parties - much of the report focuses on the Labour Party. “As the report rightly acknowledges, politicising anti-Semitism - or using it as a weapon in controversies between and within political parties - does the struggle against it a disservice.”

Three-people babies can be so dangerous SCIENTISTS and ethicists have warned that the scramble to make babies from three people is a major worry, because it hoodwinks couples is, altogether, a dangerous experiment on mums and babies.
The UK, which pioneered the advanced form of IVF, was the first country to introduce laws to allow the creation of babies from three people. Yet the first baby was born in Mexico! And despite the technique being designed to eliminate disease, it has been used as an unproven fertility booster in Ukraine. Three-person IVF was devised to prevent the repeated heartache of losing children to illnesses, caused by defective mitochondria. This disease is an inherited chronic illness, which can be present at birth or develop later in life. It causes debilitating physical, developmental, and cognitive disabilities. And symptoms include poor growth; loss of muscle co-ordination; muscle weakness and pain; seizures; vision and/or hearing loss; gastrointestinal issues; learning disabilities; and organ failure. It is estimated that one in 4,000 people has Mito, which is progressive and without a cure. The tiny structures in
our bodies convert food into useable energy and are passed on through the mother’s egg only. Three-person IVF takes the DNA from mum and dad and puts it in an egg from a donor woman. The resulting child has 0.1% of its DNA from the donor. The advanced form of IVF was developed at Newcastle University, and the final safety checks were completed in June. So the Mexico birth and the procedure being offered as a fertility treatment has caused concern. “We appear to be in a race to the bottom,” warned Dr Marcy Darnovsky, from the US Centre for Genetics and Society. She added, criticising doctors offering the technique: “They are ignoring ongoing policy debates, and are conducting dangerous and socially-fraught experiments on mothers and children. “And they appear to be actively-seeking a media splash on the way down. Use of these biologically- extreme procedures for infertility is based purely on speculation.” It has been argued that some infertility cases
Italians ready to walk the walks TENERIFE Guided Walks has announced that the first party of Italian hikers from Italian Agency Zeppelin arrive in Tenerife next Saturday (29th Oct) 2016 for a one-week walking holiday. Zeppelin, an Adventure Holiday company based in Vicenza, Italy, began operating with cycling holidays in 1998. Since then, it has diversified to sailing and cruising, and now trekking and hiking all over the world. This will be the first time Tenerife
Guided Walks is accompanying the firm, and, said Andy Walker, who runs TGW: “I am thrilled to have been chosen by this well-known activity company to lead its guided walks here. “I am looking forward to demonstrating what a beautiful island this is, and the diverse landscapes and spectacular views it has to offer.” Walking and hiking has become popular in the last decade, and the enthusiasm for this healthy sport and pastime is growing by the year.
are caused by a “poor” environment inside the egg, such as insufficient or old mitochondria, or an imbalance in the chemicals necessary to trigger embryo development. And that the threeperson technique could overcome those deficiencies. Dr Dusko Ilic, from King’s College London, said there was no way to stop IVF clinics offering the procedure. And though the UK was the first country to create laws to legalise three person IVF, it is legal by default in many countries with little-tono regulation. Dr Ilic told the BBC News website: “IVF clinics are jumping on the bandwagon and rushing ahead, whereas the Newcastle team did all the hard, due diligence work. “The major worry is how technicallyskilful these clinics are, what quality-control measures are in place, and what information they provide to desperate patients seeking help. And are those patients aware of all risks involved?” For example in the Mexico birth - the details of the family and an photograph of the baby were made public without any consent. When the UK allowed the procedure to prevent inherited, mitochondrial disease, it did not allow three-person IVF to be used in fertility treatment. “There was little evidence at the time of the law being changed that the methods were likely to help infertility,” said Prof Robin LovellBadge, from the Francis Crick Institute. Such an untried form of conception was thought to be too risky - except in the case of mitochondrial disease, in which the harms were even greater.

Dying teenager - and her swansong with Florence A TEENAGE patient, who sung a heart-rending bedside duet with Florence & the Machine, finally lost her five-year battle with terminal bone cancer in Austin, Texas.
Karinya Chen, 15, who lived in Austin, touched hearts around the world when Florence joined her for a pitch-perfect rendition of the British Grammy-winning band’s hits from her hospital bed. Karinya had bought tickets to see the group, but the American youngster’s condition deteriorated and she couldn’t attend the gig. But kind-hearted Florence, who leads the British band, dropped everything to bring their show to the stricken youngster’s bedside in May. A video of the emotional performance, posted on YouTube, attracted millions of views rapidly. The 29-year-old singer held Karinya’s hand as they sang Shake It
Out and Dog Days Are Over. Karinya’s mum, Jennifer, thanked the band on Instagram, posting: “@florence of #Florence &TheMachine is such a beautiful and kind soul! She brought so much joy to all of us today. What a blessing!” Jennifer added: “Florence is not only an awesome artist but an even more amazing human being! She made my sweet pear so happy today.” Sadly, Karinya passed away last Saturday after telling NBC News just five days before her death: “Honestly, I think the biggest thing is to not worry and fear. “I tear up a little bit when I say that because it’s hard fighting and it’s a difficult thing every single day - and just to get past every single day. “But you just have to remember that there’s always tomorrow, and, if you take it one day at a time, and just tell yourself don’t worry, and don’t take things for granted, and tell yourself that you are loved and you are blessed, then it makes it a lot easier to fight.”

British conker trees are conquered … by moths BRITAIN’S conker trees are being decimated by an invasive type of European moth, rendering them likely to be cut down for safety reasons. As many as two million conker trees in the UK could become a thing of the past over the next 15 years because of the disease sparked by the dreaded moth. The leaf-mining moth, found in Europe in 1985, spread rapidly through the continent and was found in southern England around 2002. The moth’s caterpillars eat the tree’s leaves from the inside, turning the leaves brown and forcing them to drop in the summer before the conkers have fully grown. Councils are also removing many horse chestnut trees to prevent people being hit by diseased branches when they fall. The trees are no longer planted because they last up to just five years before they are killed. The moth may also be responsible for bleeding canker, a fungal disease which can kill trees.
A 2007 Forestry Commission survey found that more than 70% of trees in some parts of England had the disease, with 36% in Wales and 42% in Scotland showing some symptoms. The Commission estimates that around 75% of the country’s conker trees are in residential areas and parks, the rest growing in woodland. Professor Robert Jackson, from the University of Reading, told Sky News: “We have a major disease epidemic (bleeding canker) and pest (leaf miner) sweeping through the
UK population of trees. “The canker kills the tree, whereas the pest seems to be reducing their vigour - wearing down their health.” Prof Jackson added: “Most plant populations have some resistant individuals, whose immune system can stop the infection, so we might see some trees survive, especially in woodlands. “But at the moment, the picture looks pretty bleak. Really, we need to assess the population to see how resilient it is over time to see if it can survive.” St John Burkett, one of the World Conker
Championship organisers, told Sky News: “It’s a bit of a concern, but I think one of the biggest concerns is the human reaction to it. “We’re quite keen to cut the trees down because they represent a bit of a danger to people with branches dropping off, once the trees become ill.” He added: “The problem is that it’s not just the canker - a fungal disease - which is killing the trees, but the leaf miner. “Because it’s a stranger to the country, none of the birds is eating the larvae, so it can lay as many eggs as it wants.”
They’re supposed to be defending us, but British soldiers are…
Too fat to fight! SOLDIERS who are too heavy are being given high-tech caloriecounting bracelets to help them shed the extra pounds.
The £100 Fitbits have been issued to troops who face being discharged for failing Army fitness tests. And one infantry unit is understood to have given every overweight soldier in the battalion a bracelet. The devices track the distance a soldier walks, and the number of calories burned, which officials believe will make troops fitter. Some units are also using civilian fitness instructors for those troops who are too fat for training lessons.
Details of the move emerged days after the Ministry of Defence revealed that it had sacked a 28-stone soldier, who was too fat to fight.
Defence chiefs admit the Army has never been fatter, with thousands failing fitness tests. It conjures up images of squaddies in the
mould of actor Don Estelle’s podgy character Lofty, from the BBC’s Seventies’ series It Ain’t Half Hot Mum. But some questioned
the expense of getting troops fit. One source said: “It’s part of a soldier’s personal responsibility to make sure he stays in shape. “The Army shouldn’t be spending extra money on fancy pieces of kit to help soldiers lose weight. If they are too fat to fight, they should be thrown out.” MoD figures show about 25,000 troops - around 18% of the Armed Forces -re overweight or obese. A further 1,000 are now suffering from type 2 diabetes. In some units, there are so many tubby troops that senior officers have created “fat clubs” to help military personnel lose weight. About 300 have been given diet pills, while more than 20 have had liposuction at the
taxpayers’ expense. Latest statistics show that between 2011 and 2014, more than 32,000 male and female soldiers have failed the Army’s basic fitness test. Some 60 troops have been dismissed from the Army for obesity since 2002. Officers are blaming the obesity on a poor diet being dished up in military cook houses. Troops can eat three cooked meals a day, starting with a full English breakfast and followed by two hefty meals, which include chips and puddings. The MoD said: “Over 95% of our personnel pass fitness tests routinely. But a wearable technology device can be a useful tool for those who need to track injury-recovery and fitness.”

Is Nutmeg, 31, the Gatwick plans new oldest mog around? runway in any case A COUPLE from Newcastle claim that the cat they rescued in 1990 is the world’s oldest after reaching his 31st birthday. Liz and Ian Finlay, from Newcastle, rescued Nutmeg 26 years ago when he turned up in their back garden with an abscess on his neck. After taking him to the local Cats Protection League, they were told he was around five years old. Now, Liz and Ian are striving to prove they have a genuine worldrecord-holder at home. If true, it would make the tabby the oldest cat in the world at 31 - or 141 in human years. He would take the crown from 26-year-old Corduroy, America’s current holder of the Guinness World Record. Mr Finlay said: “We celebrate his birthday in March every year, so we know it was around March 1990 when we got him. “I sorted out the abscess on his neck, and then we took him to the

Cat Protection League to check him over. The vet there said he was an adult, around five years old.” But to claim the world record, Nutmeg’s owners must verify his age with documentation. The Finlays are now hunting for anything to prove they took Nutmeg to the Cats Protection in 1990. Even if they can’t verify that he was five at the time, he was registered as an adult, which makes him at least 28 today … and still the oldest moggie. Mr Finlay added that Nutmeg, despite having just three teeth left, loves
chicken and stands at the fridge door when he wants to be fed. “He comes in every morning at 5am from his bed next door and we get up and feed him,” he said. “We have no children, so he is our baby.” The elderly cat proved he had more than nine lives when he suffered a serious stroke last year but was saved by vets at Newcastle’s Westway Veterinary Centre. The oldest cat ever was Creme Puff, from Austin, Texas. She died in 2005 aged 38 years and three days, which is equal to 168 in human years.
The Davies Commission has already recommended Heathrow as the most suitable site, although Prime Minister Theresa May has delayed announcing the Government’s final decision until 2017. But a Gatwick spokesman said he believed that should Heathrow be given the go-ahead, the project would never get off the ground because of environmental obstacles, legal challenges and concerns over the cost of upgrading the airport’s transport links. “Gatwick would be standing by, ready to deliver its new runway, if Heathrow gets the green light,” the unnamed spokesman
told the Press Association. “That’s because Heathrow is likely to fail, as it has done several times before. “A decision on the next steps will be taken after the Government announcement on new runway capacity. “And, while Gatwick does not rule out launching legal action, other groups have already said they would if Heathrow expansion were to be green-lighted.” An ‘official’ Gatwick spokesman told Sky News: “We are not going to stop making our case to government, whatever they decide.” The Airport Operators Association (AOA) also weighed-in to the long-running saga, insisting that an early decision would affirm Britain’s firm commitment to trading with the rest of the world, following the Brexit decision. Darren Caplan, AOA Chief Executive, told Business Travel News: “Ministers insist that,
in spite of the UK’s impending departure from the EU, the country remains outwardlooking and open for business. “Nothing could better demonstrate they mean it than a decision that would ensure the UK gets the additional capacity it needs so vitally if the country is to maintain and enhance its position as one of the world’s leading and best-connected economies.” Some 67% of MPs support a third runway, according to a Heathrow poll published last month. But environmental campaigners remain fiercely opposed to the plans, warning that a new runway cannot go ahead without breaking legal limits on pollution and carbon emissions. And Zac Goldsmith, Conservative MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston, has said he will stand down if Heathrow is expanded.

This was all compounded by Theresa May’s announcement that she will trigger Article 50 at the end of March next year. The last time we saw the Pound-to-Euro at this level was July 2011. So, in the last two weeks, expats with an

income/pension from the UK have seen a loss of 5-8 cents per pound. Sterling property buyers in the Canary Islands have seen their purchase prices increase somewhat, but it doesn’t appear to have deterred many. On Wednesday last week, the Prime Minister told the nation there would be a “full and transparent Brexit debate” before activating Article 50, which helped sterling gain some of its losses. Following the French President’s call for a quick Brexit, and politicians talking about a
“hard” exit, traders believe that all this speculation will continue to affect the Pound versus the Euro. Yesterday (Thursday) and today will be the EU Summit - the first for Theresa May. Topics under discussion will include immigration and trade. It remains to be seen how this will affect the Pound, but it will certainly be reflected by the headlines that follow - and any continued mention of Brexit. Never let it be said that I am encouraging you all to rush out and start stockpiling goods, but the fall in sterling

Spain bound to miss 2017’s budget target SPAIN, still seeking a way out of political deadlock as it emerges from a six-year recession, has admitted it will overshoot next year’s budget deficit target.
The Finance Ministry has told the European Commission it has forecast a provisional 3.6% budget deficit of gross domestic product (GDP) from a previous 3.1% target. The Ministry took note of the political instability after two inconclusive elections inside a year - and eight years trying to get back on track following the 2008 economic crisis. Two months ago, Madrid just avoided an EU fine for repeated breaches of budget rules. Brussels let both Spain and neighbouring Portugal off the hook, judging that both were attempting to get their houses in order, to close in on the official 3% ceiling. But the EU has warned both countries to stay on a “fiscal consolidation” path as the only way to create a
foundation for durable growth. Brussels did not comment immediately on the latest forecast for the eurozone’s fourthlargest economy. After six years in recession, Spain reported a 2015 budget deficit of 5.1% of GDP, which was way off the 4.2% target set by the Commission. For this year, Madrid must trim the deficit to 4.6%, and 3.1% in 2017 - a target it will obviously miss - then 2.2% in 2018. The budget report recognises that government plans to bolster revenue, including tax hikes for companies it hopes can net eight billion euros, will simply not be enough. Growth is also fraying, with a central bank forecast of 3.2%. For now, Spain is sticking with the bank’s 2017 prediction of 2.3%. The economic crisis wrought havoc with the job market, Spain’s traditional weak spot, with unemployment peaking at 27% before dropping back. Madrid now sees the jobless rate falling from 19.7% to 17.8% next year, but still well above the 10.1% eurozone average.

On Assignment Tuesday 25th October, ITV1, 22.40 43 Years In Solitary – USA When Albert Woodfox wakes up in the middle of the night, pouring with sweat after another nightmare, he paces around his bedroom. So accustomed is he to life in a prison cell, as a free man he doesn’t think to step outside the door. In an exclusive interview with Robert Moore, Woodfox talks about life outside after more than four decades in a 6ft by 9ft cell. In 1972 Albert was convicted of the murder of a prison guard, a crime he always denied. He was released in February after 43 years in solitary confinement - 23 hours a day alone in a cell. His treatment along with that of two fellow inmates, known as the Angola Three, has led to a rallying call for those demanding that the US government end a practice denounced by the UN as a form of torture. In a searingly honest interview,he reveals what has changed in America, and what hasn’t. Gender Equality – Iceland Iceland, the land of hot springs, Vikings and Bjork, has topped the Gender Equality Index for the past six years. With the next index ranking due to be released at the end of October, Noreena Hertz travels to the Nordic country to explore why women have fared better there than anywhere else in the world. She discusses boardroom quotas and the financial crash of 2008 with some successful businesswomen. She meets the world’s first democratically elected female president who, now in her eighties, reflects upon how lucky the country is to have men who are feminists. And she joins Iceland’s Miss World for her morning routine of taking her kids to nursery and getting herself to her office, where she practices family law. Noreena meets a group of young children who show how one network of private primary schools is playing its small part in taking Iceland to the top of the equality index. But with women still earning less than men, Noreena looks at what is still to be done in order to close the gender gap for good. Norfolk Island On the 1st of July this year, Norfolk Island officially became an Australian territory after decades of being a self-governing island. From its founding in 1856 to just a few years ago, the citizens of Norfolk Island were self-sufficient: they funded their own health, education, customs, quarantine, telecommunications, electricity, roads, rubbish, and other services, all without the need for income tax, land tax or council rates. Residents are outraged at becoming part of Australia and have appealed to the United Nations and the UK to stop what they consider to be colonisation. Dan Rivers meets some of the inhabitants of the remote island to hear about trouble in their paradise.

After her near-miss with Gunner, Nancy is challenged by Newman. She’s treading a dangerous line and is in jeopardy of being exposed – until O’Dowd steps in to help. He tells Nancy that they must work in tandem, and together they question Nash. But Nancy’s no nearer to finding out who’s pulling the strings here. The police urgently need to locate the Le Saux truck and its driver, missing since Frank was killed. Newman is convinced Elliot is behind the murders and that the truck holds the key. When Hayley tells Nancy that Elliot let slip information about a ‘missing witness’, Nancy realises he may soon be on to her. In a reckless bid to accelerate the investigation, and turn the tables on the man who may be hunting her, Nancy proposes a high risk undercover op, in which she will pose as a bent cop to gain Elliot’s trust. With only Newman aware of the op, Nancy now has more to hide from her colleagues than ever. But she can’t deceive her dad, Gil: when he realises what she’s doing, he tries to stop her. The ensuing row leads to a shattering revelation. Nancy barely has time to recover before Elliot is putting her under pressure forcing her to break the law to prove her loyalty. Nancy finds herself caught up in a violent raid on the Le Saux haulage yard. The results are explosive.

Wild West: America’s Great Frontier BBC2, 21.00
In the final part of the series viewers will be taken on a journey to the Wild West’s rugged shoreline. Narrated by James Norton, this episode reveals an abundance of life in some of the richest seas on earth, from the mysterious Sea of Cortez to the wild and elemental Pacific Ocean, and witnesses stunning landscapes being shaped by powerful earth forces as they tear into the earth’s crust, like the infamous San Andreas Fault. In extraordinary and rarely-captured scenes, filmed using the latest technology, blue whales and their calves are attracted to the warm and sheltered Sea of Cortez; grunion fish come ashore on full moon to spawn in their thousands, but find themselves at the mercy of a flock of hungry pelicans; and in the furthest outpost of the Wild West, grey whales form a unique friendship with a small community of people.

Inside Out: Can the NHS survive diabetes?
M onday
BBC1, 19.30
Regional current affairs programme Inside Out investigates how serious the epidemic of Type 2 diabetes is for patients, for the NHS and for NHS finances. Experts warn the predicted rise in preventable diabetes is putting huge strain on health service finances. With increasing numbers of young people now being diagnosed, the health service is facing a ticking time bomb. So is this a crisis that will bankrupt our already fragile NHS? Inside Out interviews doctors, researchers, a health economist and the NHS clinical director for obesity and diabetes. We meet the man who ignored his diagnosis for 20 years and is now permanently disabled and the 16 year-old who says diagnosis last year has changed her life forever. And we confront the public with the reality of the huge number of amputations directly related to the disease. Reporting locally, all 11 regions will look at the steps being taken in their area to tackle type 2 diabetes and the complications that account for 80 percent of the health costs.

Saving Africa’s Elephants: Hugh And The Ivory War BBC1, 21.00
Every day more than 80 elephants are killed in Africa for their ivory. At this rate, experts have warned that the African elephant could be extinct in the wild within 25 years. In the first of this investigative two-part series, broadcaster and environmental campaigner Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is on a mission to find out how this brutal, illegal trade can be stopped. Starting in the poaching hot spot of Northern Mozambique, Hugh joins the conservationists, rangers and villagers who patrol from the air and on the ground, to find out why Niassa National Reserve has lost almost two thirds of its elephants in only three years. Discovering the grim reality of the situation, Hugh follows the ivory trail through the port of Mombasa in Kenya, where a whistleblower reveals the corruption that lets smuggled ivory through the port. From there, Hugh heads to one of the busiest ivory markets in the world: Hong Kong, where carved ivory is sold openly in licensed shops. Antique ivory, defined as pre-1947, is considered legal around the world, but fresh ivory is not. However it is impossible for an untrained eye to tell the difference and the rules of the trade are riddled with confusion. Hugh goes undercover with secret cameras to prove that traders are laundering recentlypoached ivory smuggled in from Africa, and most surprising of all, he discovers that the UK and Europe are complicit in fuelling these markets. Back in the UK, Hugh uses radio carbon dating to reveal that carved ivory pieces on sale here are not always the antiques they claim to be. These shocking results lead him to call into question the UK Government’s policy on ivory. Are they prepared to take action? Hugh is determined to get answers at the highest level.

The second episode of Danny Brocklehurst’s hit drama focuses on Holly, MD Jenna’s PA. By the very nature of her job, she is always organised, in control of her life and of her surroundings - or so her colleagues think. Holly’s insecurities and addiction to social media make her constantly feel that everyone around her is living a more exciting life than her own. After finding a note in her boyfriend Neil’s pocket, Holly convinces herself that he’s having second thoughts about their relationship. Desperately unhappy and anxious, she starts to reminisce about her old flame Adam Carver. Discovering that Adam is newly single, Holly assumes a new online identity to try and win back his affection. But events soon spiral out of control, ending in tears and revelations. Meanwhile, newlydivorced Ally is ecstatic when intern Ash asks her out on an official date. Is this the start of a true romance or is it all too good to be true?

She is in poor condition, but her charming and affectionate personality shines through. Finally, Paul catches up with gigantic Igloo the akita who he first met last year. Accion del Sol news
Thanks Mum, it’s just the job ONE young girl, who came to the refuge from a local school to participate in our educational programme, had her heart set on adopting a dog.
Her mother, quite rightly, was concerned that it might be a passing fad. She told her daughter that, every Saturday, she would have to go to the refuge and walk, groom and care for her chosen dog, to ensure that, as a family, it was the correct decision. This carried on for many weeks, and we are pleased to say that the family have adopted the dog, and they’re all extremely happy together. It is good to see parents and children being so careful, and committed to animal welfare. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in other ways. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads.

Cats Welfare News
A cat’s-eye view WHEN Fluffy goes crazy for laser pointers, shiny objects and people's ankles, just what is she seeing? Cats' fondness for pouncing on feet and feathery toys may be rooted in their hunting instinct, but it also has a lot to do with their unique vision.
Cats are just like colour-blind people, seeing some colours but not all. People can see, clearly, objects up to 60 metres away, but cats need to be about 6 metres away to see those same things as accurately. They have a wider field of vision, though, (about 200 degrees) compared with that of a human (180 degrees)
- all the better to spot that mouse (or toy) wriggling in the corner. Their eyes are more sensitive to low light at dawn and dusk, and a cat's eye shape and larger corneas reflect light back to the retina. This helps to gather more light as well, which allows cats
to sense motion in the dark much better than their owners can. Do cats have to blink? Unlike people, cats do not need to blink their eyes on a regular basis to keep them lubricated, which is probably an advantage when hunting. They will, however, “squint”
Making a song and dance... THE curtain goes up in Arona in the next week or so with three shows to perk up ears and feet.
The Auditorio Infanta Leonor, in the centre of Los Cristianos is the place to be, with Show Stoppers on Monday (24th Oct), Ballet Flamenco on Thursday and Vocal Siete on Monday (29th Oct). Show Stoppers is a charity show to benefit PAWS (Pet Animal Welfare Supporters) and the Helping Hands charity in aid of disadvantaged children. The song and dance is supplied by the brilliant students from England’s Gillian Banks Theatre School. The show starts at 7.30pm and tickets in advance, or on the night, are 10 euros.
Moving on to Thursday, the Ballet Flamenco is brought to you by Yolanda G Sobrado, who has staged several popular shows before, featuring the iconic Spanish dance. The latest work is called Mar de Mares (Sea of Seas) and is influenced by the power and passion of the sea. The feet start stomping and the dresses whirling at 8pm and tickets are 11 euros. For an uplifting start to the following week, check out Vocal Siete, which features a seven-part group with no instruments. They rely on singing a cappella and imitating the sound of instruments with their voices and bodies. This innovative show starts at 8.30 pm and tickets cost seven euros.
their eyes, usually as a form of communication, expressing affection and ease around another cat, or person. Cats have a third eyelid, which is a thin cover that closes from the side, and appears when the cat's eyelid opens. This membrane will partially closes if the cat is sick, so, if your cat is awake and you can see the membrane, pop him along to your vet for a check up. It’s a snip! Cat Neutering: 35 euros, male and 65 euros, female during October. All four of our vets, Las Chafiras, Los Cristianos, Las Americas and Gran Sur, are taking part. We are grateful to everyone who helped on the day, those who donated, and, of course, all who bagged themselves a designer bargain. Helping Hands back to school! LIZ Montague and Helping Hands colleague Kim recently visited the Guaidyl Day Centre in Granadilla for a meeting with Director Paco Rodriguez and his staff to discuss additional support by the Children’s Charity.
“A concerned Liz, who runs Helping Hands, said: “It became very clear that the Centre is in desperate need, not only for the children but also their families. The children really do need educational support to improve their school progress. “With the different very difficult – day-today situations facing the majority of children, school work-grades inevitably suffer. “But we have agreed to implement teaching
resources within the safe walls of the centre, and have various activities, including sports and educational lessons.” A 3,000-euro donation from Helping Hands, gratefully received, will put the wheels in motion for these resources.
Giving the children support in these early years will help benefit the children when they leave school with a higher level of education and confidence. Liz added: “We will fund academy courses of their choice, as and when they are ready.”

Its annual Poppy Day Appeal will be launched at Our Place bar in Costa del Silencio next Saturday (22nd Oct) between 3-8pm. There will be a BBQ, entertainment
and a raffle, so come along for an enjoyable afternoon, and help raise some money for a worthy, popular charity. Boxes of poppies and collection tins will be collected after 13th November. Should you require poppies or a collection tin, please contact Poppy Appeal Organiser Kelly on 922 786 777. Kelly says: “We are aware of the current financial situation, but hope that the usual generous response from Tenerife people
will enable The Royal British Legion to continue its work, helping those ex-service personnel and their dependants in need, including those in the Canary Islands. “With your generosity, the 2015 Poppy Appeal in South Tenerife raised 14,089.02 euros.” Kelly adds: “Please ensure that your donation to this year’s Appeal goes into a genuine Poppy Appeal collecting box. Please give generously, and wear your poppy with pride. “Thanking you in anticipation.”

White rice is not that nice
By Val Sainsbury WHITE rice is, probably, one of the most-common staple foods in the world. It can grow in many different countries and climates, it lasts just about forever, and is so easy to prepare. It is popular in European countries such as Spain - where paella is a much-loved dish. In Asian countries, for example, Japan, it is usual to eat a healthy serving of rice with every meal. However, the way it is processed, so that it ends up being that nice white colour, results in it becoming toxic to your body. Believe it or not but Arsenic, a highly-toxic, metallic compound,
can be found in white rice. While the amount of arsenic contained in white rice is fairly minuscule, it can still have ill-effects on the human body. The way that cells communicate may be altered, which can result in ailments such as cancer - or diabetes. It could also play a role in the development of vascular and lung diseases. The natural colour of rice is brown, and, once picked, it is shipped to plants where it is refined and transformed into those popular white grains some of us prefer. The rice degrades during the journey, causing a fraction of its nutritional value to deplete. Fortunately, however, a lot of goodness is retained, because of the protective, brown shells
around the grains. These are what give rice its brown colour and nutty flavour. The shell is the first thing to be removed, in order to end up with white grains. The dirty rice is then cleaned, by being soaked in a variety of solutions. This process gives the rice its white colour. But, unfortunately, all its nutritional value is depleted. The rice is then fortified with vitamins and minerals, to put back a bit of what has been taken out. As well as rice containing chemicals and toxins, such as arsenic, rice is a simple carbohydrate. But, by eating a lot of it, you are increasing your risk for Type-2 diabetes. Studies in Asia, the US and Australia have been made, which show
that individuals who eat a lot of white rice increase their risk of Type-2 diabetes by over 50%. So don’t risk a life of insulin shots - keep away from the rice! Have you ever eaten a piece of sushi, and, after some time, felt violently ill? You probably blamed the fish. But, what if you were told that the fish was most likely fine, and that it was the rice which probably made you sick? Rice is, quite possibly, one of the leading causes of food poisoning across the globe. It is usually infected with spores known as Bacillus Cereus, which can survive quite easily in dry conditions, such as the bag your rice travels in. Cooking your rice cannot kill off these spores - it activates them! It also gives them a nice, healthy environment in which to thrive, creating the perfect scenario for food-poisoning, if left out of the fridge for long enough. The only way to help to prevent this is to refrigerate your rice as soon as possible, and to keep it for no longer than two or three days. Many of you probably feel that this is a good thing. Because of how cheap and filling rice is, it is very easy to overfill on it. This can cause you or your family - to miss out on much-needed nutrients from other sources, such as fruits and vegetables for vitamins and fibre, or meats and cheeses for protein.

Double treat for Amy fans THE late, sadly-missed Amy Winehouse never got to perform in Tenerife. Now, though, two concerts featuring original members of her backing band will be staged in Tenerife, next month and December. First up is “Amy Lives” on 19th November as part of the Soul & Funk Night in the Plaza del Cristo, La Laguna, from 7 pm to 2 am. This is more about her music rather than the voice because there is no female listed in the band’s line-up. Driving force behind this group is Xantonie Blacq, a long-time associate. Tickets for this event are 15 euros, from www. entrees.es. Later, in the South, Forever Amy will play the Magma Arte y Congresos centre in Playa de Las Americas on 9th December. Xantonie will also be part of this band, and Nathan Allen will also feature in both groups. The difference with this show is that songstress Alba Plano will sing Amy´s famous songs. The band contains other originals from Amy´s band, such as Jim
Hunt and Dale Davis. It took a few years of constant gigging before Amy achieved international fame, and she always had a big, often-changing backing ensemble, to create her special sound. So there are a lot of her collaborators to draw from. Tickets for Forever Amy are 30 and 35 euros from www.magma.com . The full programme of entertainment will be in the Plaza del Cristo from 7pm to 2am with tickets costing 15 euros. Meanwhile, Santa Cruz has two classic rock films lined up at the Caja Canarias HQ in Plaza del Patriotismo as part of a Rock Legends’ series. On 15th November, it’s The Rolling Stones’ film Live At The Tokio Dome, as part of their 1990 Steel Wheels tour. Then, on 13th December, you can see U2 Live At Rose Bowl California, on their 2009 tour. Both films start at 8pm and entrance is 2 euros. It´s a small theatre, so get there in good time because they might start … With Or Without You.

A valuable spare room
WANT 5 ***** HAIR?
By Carl Pattison
By Miruna Voicu
IF you care about it … if you give time to it … then you will reap the benefits. Star hair isn’t hard to get, neither is it difficult to look after. You just need the right elements to achieve it. So, where do you start, if you’re looking to have great hair?
IF you are one of the “Swallows” - who have the best of both worlds, travelling back and forth between Tenerife and the UK - you may well have just come back to the Island, to get away from that wintry chill in the British air.
The main aspect is a good relationship with your stylist. If there isn’t a connection, then it’s going to be difficult. Having good vibes with
your salon makes for better hair. Your stylist must have your best interests at heart, not what’s going in the cash box. Choosing a cut and/or colour with your stylist shouldn’t be difficult, if they do their homework into how you like your hair, and what really suits you. Your part in all this is how you continue their hard work at home. Keeping up to the cut and colour - including
the condition of your hair - is vital. Always, here at Robot, our aim is to offer honest, professional advice. It might not be what you want to hear, but we have your best interests at heart. So, if star-like hair is your dream, then follow our free advice which is always given at every salon visit. Don’t give up on your hair. There’s always something you can do to make it your biggest asset.
CHRISTMAS ALREADY? By Carl Pattison YES, it is … Christmasdresses season is here, and now’s the time to start looking! It’s only six weeks to the Christmas-party season, and hunting down that dress is going to start, sooner than later. Don’t be caught out with nothing to wear, and raking out last year’s clothes as a last resort. Now’s the time to start online shopping, and looking at what the stores are starting to bring in. If you are stuck for ideas, then go for what I predicted, a few months ago. “METALLICS” are this season’s musthaves, and there’s every tone - from matte to full-on shine.
If that’s not your bag, then plump for pleathers (imitation leathers) and rigid-looking dresses that will stand out from the crowd. Forget frills or flowers; this party season goes
for high-end lux items, and anything that creates a bling - but in metallic form. Go easy on the glitter and sparkle, and let the shine come through in an edgier way. Hi-booties replace stilettos, to rock your urban glam style, and don’t forget your square, oversized bag to complete your look. Shy away from girly, and think space-girl meets rock-chic. That’s your theme for looking your best and standing out from the crowd, as you party the night away. If you’re going to make that purchase, make sure you’re the one who’s catching the attention - for all the right reasons.
And, before you know it, half-term is upon us, and the rest of the family want to come and visit you! If you do have a spare room, you might like to have it cleverly furnished, to accommodate your guests the best you can! At the end of the day, they can be
here for only few weeks per year, so they have to enjoy! A bare minimum of two single beds, with really comfy mattresses and some good-quality sun curtains, will ensure that your guests get a good, nice sleep. This, in turn, will give them the energy for spending another wonderful, sunny day in Tenerife! Then again, after dressing the room with nice soft furnishings and decoration of you choice, you might enjoy it as well, occasionally, for a short nap in the lazy afternoons. Of course, not all of us have the luxury of a spare bedroom, and, if you don’t, (or maybe have a big family), one solution can be a sofabed. Sofa-beds, nowadays, can be as comfortable and stylish as a normal sofa, so you are not compromising on your everyday comfort.
The mattresses have to bend to fit back inside the sofa, and this used to be a problem with the sprung variety. With modern technological developments, memory-foam mattresses can adapt to everything that is required of them, and be as comfortable as a normal bed. Like a lot of things, to a certain extent, you do get what you pay for! A sofa-bed from one of the big chain stores that costs you less than you would expect to pay for a mattress alone - is unlikely to serve you well. It’s a personal choice of course, but if you spend time on your sofa, and your loved ones will occasionally sleep on it, it’s worth investing some money. And it might not be as expensive as you think! All items mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

Behind the Mic...

jenny T with
She has sweet taste of success By Val Sainsbury WITH one shoulder noticeably lower than the other, Oasis Fm DJ Jenny Tipton left last year’s Christmas office party. Her reputation as an extreme chocoholic explained her bulging handbag. She had managed to amass a large number of bags of festive, chocolate coins, which all the staff had been given, before making her way home. The traditional Christmas crackers, laid out on the meal tables, next to the coins, held no appeal for Jenny. It was other party-goers’ glistening bags of golden money which had caught her eye, so into her handbag they jolly well went! Like a pantomime burglar, with a bag of swag, her excitement at the haul knew no bounds. As of last Monday, Jenny is the n e w face o f Oasis Fm’s Breakf a s t S h o w, which runs from 8 til 12, Monday to Friday. Her predecessor, Roscoe, has moved on to pastures new, which cre-
ated the vacancy for the position she so obviously relishes. “I really have to pinch myself,” she said. “All I’ve ever known is Roscoe being at Oasis Fm. I really wish him well, and I’m glad that Chris thought highly enough of me to offer this opportunity.” Jenny, 30, is a Leicester lass. The city’s football success as last season’s Premier-league title holders was a cause for huge celebration in her household, back in the UK. “My Dad was the happiest man in the world,” she recalled. He is an ardent, lifelong supporter, and she remembers him buying her the team shirts and taking her to matches as a little girl, even painting her face to really get into the swing of things. She attended the University of Middlesex, studying Dance and Performing Arts, graduating when she was 21. She then applied for a job as a dancer on cruise ships with several companies, but they all gave her the same answer: “You’re too short!” At 5ft 3ins, she was three inches under the minimum-height requirement. She tried fooling them - by wearing high heels - to no avail! Undeterred, and adamant she wanted to be abroad, she came to
Tenerife and worked in a bar. After a while, she successfully applied to a hotel in Cyprus, and was surprised to discover that she really enjoyed organising quizzes and game shows, as well as her usual dancing. In 2011, she began working for Thomson Holidays, as a hotel animator, and travelled with them around Europe. They then brought in a rule that an employee couldn’t stay in one place for more than two years, but she wanted to put down roots after being on the move for such a long time. Jenny’s background as an animator gave her a lot of confidence, and there was always one thing that had fascinated her over the years: the role of a DJ. In 2014, she was based in Los Gigantes with Thomsons, and had decided that it would be her last few months of working for them. Her Mum and brother came here on holiday that summer, and asked what she wanted to do next. “I think I’d like to be a radio DJ,” she replied. “Er, OK. Right,” was their response! She e-mailed several radio stations, but only Oasis Fm gave her the opportunity to sit in the studio to see what happens. At this point, she wasn’t
asking for a job; just the chance to see how it all worked in the studio, because she was intrigued and wanted to learn. She came down to Las Chafiras, voluntarily, once a week, just to sit in and watch the DJs in action. “I used to be like a little sponge, and take everything in,” she enthused. “To me, it wasn’t a hassle. I really enjoyed it.” Eventually, she was allowed to go on air, under supervision. A regular once-a-week slot was then offered, and she progressed, over the months, to a full-time position. Initially, she didn’t tell friends or family when she started broadcasting, but her entertainer partner, Adam, let the cat out of the bag when he announced it on Facebook. Her passion for work is obvious. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and spills over into the presentation of her show. “As the saying goes - enjoy what you do, and you never work a day in your life,” she added. “I’m up at 6.30 every morning, checking Twitter and the showbiz websites for the latest news,” she said. “I’m interested in that sort of thing, and love to chat about it on my show.” Lovely, bubbly, uplifting Jenny … just what we need to get us going in the morning!
The Chocolate Fest... on air! On 7th July, which was World Chocolate Day, Jenny was set a challenge, live on air. Blindfolded, she had to determine 10 varieties of chocolate, having tasted each one in turn. She wasn’t even allowed to touch them, in case she recognised the textures. Not surprisingly, she scored an impressive 8 out of 10. Sometimes, when people approach her, having recognised her voice from the radio, they are surprised to see how fresh-faced and super-fit she really is. “They always tell me that they thought I would be some kind of fat blob, because I talk about chocolate so much on my show!” Jenny explained.

The PAS system in Spain
By Emma at Motorworld
AS in all countries, in the event of an accident or incident, the primary concern should be of the safety of those concerned. The Emergency Services here have a system called PAS, which stands for Proteger, Avisar y Soccorer. Essentially, it means: Protect, Advise and Assist. These three things are important to remember when we are fraught, nervous and frightened. If we try to remember this system by the abbreviations, similar to those used in TV advertisements to drive home information about a stroke - FAST - we may find the situation less daunting and be able to deal with it more calmly. Let’s look at what we should do. Protect By remembering this phrase and following the actions methodically, you can, potentially, save a
life. Firstly, consider your own safety. And, if you are assisting at a scene, make sure you are wearing your high-visibility jacket, and have parked your car safely. If you are on a very busy road and cannot park completely out of the way, use your hazard warning lights to alert other road-users to the potential hazard. You should never approach a burning vehicle, or go near to an accident involving a vehicle car-
rying hazardous goods: petrol, etc. If it is safe for you, place your own warning triangles at an appropriate distance, again to warn other drivers. Advise You should call the emergency services if the incident is dangerous, someone is hurt or injured, by calling 112. These operators are fully-trained and speak multi-languages. Remember that if you have a Pay-as-you-go
phone but no credit, you can still call 112. You will need to provide them with a location - street name and vehicle registration number - and pick out any landmarks that may help. If you have a smart phone, use that to pinpoint the location. It will also help the emergency services if you can tell them how many people are involved, how many are injured, their state (unconscious, bleeding etc.), or if a
larger vehicle has been involved, and someone is trapped. The more information you supply, the better it will be for the emergency services to dispatch the appropriate type of vehicles/services necessary. Always stay on the line until the emergency services end the call, because they may come back to you for more information. Assist Always be careful not to add to, or aggravate, any
injuries sustained, and, unless you are a medical professional - doctor, nurse or paramedic - do not intervene. Do not attempt to remove people from vehicles, and, if a biker is involved, never remove his/ her helmet. Never give injured people food, drink or medication, and, wherever possible, don’t let them move on their own. Try to remain calm and stay until the emergency services arrive, and leave the scene only when they tell you it is okay to do so. You never know, sometimes you may be able to pass on vital information which you may have deemed silly, or not worthy of stating. All in all, the PAS system is about common sense, but, in times of trouble, this often deserts even the best of people! By the way, the police do not need to be called if there are no injured parties, and the two sides complete and sign an accident claim form at the time, for submission to their insurers.

Exiles on the right road! THERE are a few myths in the Direct Telecom Pool League, and some of the best include: Rewind A are full of “County League” ringers, The Crown play only after 12 pints of Jägermeister, and the Dreamers serve only Mince and Tatties.
Okay, that last one might be true, but the biggest myth is that Exiles A are poor on the road. A quick glance at their results this season soon puts that to bed. Their three away defeats have all come by the slightest of margins, 7-5, and they have had fine draws at Terrace Roosters, Gaffers B and, last week, at Palms Elite, where they were 6-2 up. Seven days later and on the same table, they finally got over the line. Tenerife Hammers A are a shadow of the side who dominated the league a few seasons ago, and Exiles certainly took their chances in a tight match. Maybe it was the heat (and boy, did the Palms live up to its nickname as the Greenhouse), maybe it was the extra determination, or maybe there was something in the air (and with Exiles there is ALWAYS) something in the air). But something
worked. The 7-5 win puts them on the edge of the top half, and they now have just one away match before Kings Day. On the second Palms table, it is serious nosebleed time for Palms A. The former champions are enjoying a renaissance this season, and there is no fluke in their lofty position. A glance at their scores shows they get the job done when the pressure is on. Phoenix Potters gave them a real match. Palms A have a habit of winning frames in clusters, and, after losing the opener, they won four on the bounce and then another surge saw them 6-2 up. However, it is never easy to get that seventh frame and they needed to wait until frame 11, when Chris sunk the black to earn them another huge three points. Palms Elite got back to winning ways at Dreamers. The Los Cristianos crew are mustard at home, and Gaffers A alone had left this season with three points. They were soon ahead 3-2, only for Wayne and Shai (who has a spring in his step for some reason!) to get Elite back on top. That lead was short-lived as first Tommy, then Steve, got Dreamers back in front. But Palms were not finished. There was no finger-wagging from Gav The Fluke as he was turned over by Harry. Then Wayne completed

his hat-trick, and, at the death, Graeme did Mark A to secure a superb 7-5 win. Just around the corner there was another 7-5 win, but not for the bookies’ favourites. The signing of Paul for Terrace Bantams, from Tenerife Hammers A, should have been the catalyst for a surge up the table. It has not happened, and Bluebell A were inspired! Everything they hit went in, and fourball clearances were the order of the day. Like all teams in this division, they have it in them. And since belief breeds belief, they found their form. Bluebell plundered frames 4 to 8, and that was a vital surge. Paul and Pete threatened a fightback for Bantams, but it was too little, too late. At their 12th attempt, it was a first win of the season for the Bluebell boys, and it will be interesting to see if they can now find a run of form. In Puerto Colon, the French Legion (since

they have so many players of different nationality) that is Rewind A, made another move towards the Nobel Peace Prize with an amazing point at home to Treehouse A. They played eight different players in the first two sets and were in trouble at 6-2 down. But the scatter-gun system is clearly working as they got all the frames back. Again, it was the French Connection of Michael, and then Wonder Women Cecilia, who took the plaudits. Backed up by John and Pete they bagged a point. Next up are champions Gaffers A, and that should be quite a night - and could be a real contest! Talking for Gaffers A, they were never in any real trouble at home against Rewind Rewired, securing their 12th win of the season smoothly with a 8-4 scoreline. The ‘Flat-Track Bully’ phrase is long-standing in cricket. But maybe we should now use it
for Gaffers B. Until Tuesday, their only win was a remarkable 11-1 victory at Palms A. This week, they went ahead and charged at Terrace Roosters. And again, hitting double figures, they ground their opponents’ noses in it. Funny division! There is now a clear split in Division Two. The top six is exactly that, and it is shaping up to be a real bunfight at the end of the season. James Hammers C were in action, which gave the others a chance to catch up. It didn’t happen! Second hosted third and, at the end, both sides will have seen it two points dropped. Picasso’s were quickly away against Yates, despite dropping the opening frame. Four wins on the spin had them in control at 4-1. Also, Yates’ captain Lee, a vital player, had lost both his frames. It should have been game-over, but Yates came back in style. Firstly, Chard’s finest, Terry, pulled one back, and then Chris backed him up. Biggie won another to make it interesting, and, when Terry slammed home another black, it was
game on. At 5-4 up, the points were leaving Torviscas. Or were they? A team huddle, a shot of something black and some strong words worked wonders. Mark levelled the match for Picasso’s, and, after Chris had given Yates the lead again, Brian coolly took frame 12 for a share of the spoils. It was just as close at Hoppy’s as they faced The Crown. At times, the Valle San Lorenzo lads must feel they are playing with three players as Joel, this division’s JT, cannot buy a win at the moment. Again he lost to Debbie, but the match was already won and the 7-5 scoreline keeps The Crown in the hunt. Ditto Splash Bar after a 9-3er over Exiles B, Steve and Clive achieving hat-tricks for the Malibu Park Posse. And well done to Palms Rebels! They won their first-ever away match in early August - and after 10 weeks, they now have another. It was a real team effort and I can’t help but think that Babycakes’ win in frame 8 made all the difference. Well done girl!

Scruffy's Tavern tumble! THE league table doesn't lie, goes the old saying, and that's true of Scruffy Macs, one of Division 1's leading sides.
They sit second in an extremely competitive division, and rightly so because they are a good side. But, when the Canarian Weekly team handicap competition
comes around, anything can happen, as they found out during the first round of fixtures in this popular event. By way of explanation, the handicap system works like this: teams are given a handicap number, determined by their league position the week before the round is played. Starting with the team bottom of Division 2, who begin each leg on 501, the next team up
will start on 16 points higher at 517, and so on, all the way to the top of Division 1, where that team will start on 949. This, hopefully, creates a more level playing-field and produces some really close matches and some major upsets, as Scruffy Macs found out last Friday because The Tavern's 176-point head-start proved just too much! Elsewhere, Division
2 outfit Emerald Lounge put a 160-point advantage to good use as they dumped Division 1 side Boothen, while more giant-killing exploits came to pass as Sundowners beat Palms Sports Bar and Pas O Nadas B put Exiles to the sword. The Trophy second round, and the first round of the Plate, will both be contested on Friday, 11th November. Giants beware!

Tenerife road rally
Drama at every turn NIGHT-and- day driving, tight rural bends and short, sharp sprints … that’s what it takes to win the Orvecame Tenerife T Gas Rally.
Adeje’s Eduardo Dominguez showed a clean set of wheels to the other 97 competitors to win the 42nd annual contest
with his navigator, Dailoz Gonzalez, in their Ford Fiesta R5 last weekend. The action started on the Friday evening with two night runs, the first around Casas de la Cumbre (15.83km) and then Tabares to Los Campitos (5.5kms). Reverting to base in Plaza de España, Santa Cruz, they were off again on Saturday morning for a fullthrottle action day. First stretch was
down, south-east from Poris to Arico Nuevo (14.04), Fasnia to La Tose (10.02), and Las Cuevcitas to Los Loros (15.15 ). The final two runs were driven twice to be added to the aggregate times over the two days. They were Fuente del Bardo to Buen Paso (13.97) and Amparo to Las Canales (7.47). That just left the organisers to tot up the times and announce the winners, and, for Eduardo it was a proud moment. Laurent Garcia was favourite to win the title in his Porsche 997 GT3, but had to settle for second, just 1.07 minutes behind the winning aggregate of 58mins 20secs. Laurent was left cursing a broken radiator, which proved to be a bit of a drag. But hang on, there was one last bit of drama to come. Two hours after the race, a fiveminute penalty was imposed on Laurent for a technical breach. That left him dropping to fourth spot, with some shuffling up to fill the other places. The new second was Alfonso Viera in the Skoda, with Adrian Garcia moving up to third.

What a shower! By Colin Kirby
A FEW drops of rain in Santa Cruz were nothing compared with the monsoon of despair that threatens to engulf CD Tenerife and their inexperienced coach, Pep Marti.
Another soul-draining performance resulted in a 1-1 home draw with Cadiz, who were a man short after a sendingoff just before half-time. That made it six games for Tenerife without a win. It’s not just the results that are a problem because the team are also a shambles, and new problems keep bursting forth like a pipe that needs lagging. This time, dependable keeper Dani Hernandez spilled the ball to gift an injury-time equaliser. The midfield is stodgy and too defensive, goals are hard to come by and the coach makes some baffling team selections and substitutions. That apart, however,
CD Tenerife 1 Cadiz 1
everything is hunkydory! Raul Camara was out injured, so Camille switched to right-back and Inaki filled the left slot. Camille has been one of the big pluses so far; he is quality and just gets on with what´s asked of him. Amath started on the left wing, but he has tailed off quickly after a bright start, and defenders can read him easily. Cadiz are struggling after promotion and should have been cannon-fodder. But former Tenerife coach Alvaro Cervera was keen to get something out of his return to the old office. A speculative overhead kick from Abdullah gave Dani an early feel of the ball, and Iñaki mopped up well when threatened. Marc Crosas was back in the home midfield for the suspended Aitor Sanz. He’s another who is failing to deliver on his early
promise and, despite venturing forward after 20 minutes, his shot was soft and straight at the keeper. It would take something special, or stupid, to bring Tenerife out of their shell, and we got the latter. Ortuño hacked down Iñaki in front of the ref and was off just before the break. The 8,425 crowd was braced for an all-out Tenerife assault in the second half, but it never came. Jouini for Crosas was a good swap. He’s not that mobile but is, at least, a big target man. Cadiz played up the spoiling tactics, with some generous help from the ref, but it didn’t excuse the lack of clear scoring
chances from Tenerife. Suso was having a quieter game, but he managed a decent ball in to the oncoming Amath, who lost it another move broken down! Omar, by far the best Tenerife player in the previous week’s Cup defeat, came on for Carlos Ruiz. It should have helped the attack, but Omar was used as an attacking right-back, covering much of the same ground as Suso. What the home crowd wanted was Cristo Gonzalez, the young, moody one who has
been out of favour. But he has speed and an eye for goal. After replacing Amath, the lad was gagging for the ball, but players seemed reluctant to feed him. Finally, he got a pass out on the left, looked up and floated in a peach of a ball, Jouini jumped magnificently to head over the defence for a goal. His celebration shuffle won’t win any prizes … but to the fans, it was pure Patrick Swayze! A taste of heaven, a big gulp of relief, and 10 minutes left to wrap up the game. Choco

Lozano badly needs a goal, but badly is how he has been shooting lately - one straight at the goalie summing up his form. Six minutes of injurytime had to be added for the Cadiz theatricals … a break forward, but, with Dani well-placed, there seemed little danger. What a choker, though, when he half-caught the ball but let it get away for a Santamaria goal. New ideas are needed. Oviedo away this Sunday is another tough one, and the rumblings of discontent are getting louder.

Amarilla’s hot-shot President’s champ! AMARILLA Golf’s annual President’s Cup was held last Saturday, for the 17th time - and 170 players took to the course on a sunny, wind-free day. Weather conditions reflected the scoring with a 2-handicap golfer scoring a fourunder round to win the scratch prize with a round of 67 - an excellent standard by any measure. The tee times were
staggered at eightminute intervals, which allowed players to finish their individual rounds in about 4½ hours. And, on arrival back at the clubhouse, they were greeted with a BBQ and a large, mixed paella, along with free wine and beer. When the competition was over, a prizegiving ceremony took place, with trophies presented to the
individual category winners. A raffle followed with some super prizes, including superior hotel stays on the Island, golf clubs, vouchers for free golf at many of Tenerife’s courses, and, of course, a bottle or two of alcohol. In all, an excellent day for everyone - and a date has already been set for Amarilla Golf’s 18th President’s Cup next year.

CD Marino derailed Ladies Football
CD Marino 2 San Fernando 2
Launa doom for her rivals
EVERY football team want a goal-scorer and the ladies of Egatesa Granadilla have found a prolific one from Brazil. Launa scored a hattrick last Wednesday to spur her team to a 3-2 win at Albacete, and there was only one way for her to beat that - with all four goals at home against Huelva last By Colin Kirby A DOUBLE substitution proved to be a masterstroke by San Fernando as two goals in four minutes pegged back CD Marino for a 2-2 home draw that should have been a safe 2-0 win. There’s no faulting the youthful eagerness of Marino, but they need
to develop a tougher mentality to win games from strong positions. Josito, who was carried off to hospital in the 3-0 midweek mauling at El Cotillo, watched the game from the stands, his leg in plaster. The forward would have been cheered by the performance of Fran
Alonso, who swapped from the left wing to fill the void on the right. Fran had a running battle with the visitors David Feito but left him without the ball several times. Coly and Alberto created early chances for the blues and Kevin Castro stung the San
Fernando keeper’s hands with a fierce shot after 13 minutes. The long ball was favoured by the Gran Canarian team, and forward Joel thought he had made the perfect connection. But Ubeda robbed him of the ball and his shooting chance with a well-timed tackle.
Real refurb’s keeping pace with Nou Camp REAL Madrid’s plans to refurbish their Bernabeu Stadium have finally been agreed by the city after some years.
It follows Barcelona’s announcement last March that the Nou Camp will be remodelled at a cost of 420 million euros. Real President Florentino Perez expects the project - to include a retractable roof - will cost around 400 million euros, with building work set to start next year. A spectacular new facade will also be installed, and the entire stadium refurbishment should be completed by 2020. “We will see a dramatic transformation of the Santiago Bernabeu,” said Perez. “This stadium is one of the emblematic icons of our city. We want to make it one of the best stadiums in the world,
and the undisputed symbol of the strength of our capital.” The refurb project has been mooted for years, but plans have been vetoed repeatedly by Madrid’s Council and courts. One ambitious scheme was approved by City Hall in 2012, only to be scrapped by the regional High Court this February. Perez and Madrid Mayor Manuela Carmena held a joint press conference, at which they announced that an accord had now been reached. The club also intends to incorporate a hotel and shopping centre within the iconic stadium. “With this agreement, we will start a process of modernisation and transformation that will convert the stadium into an avantgarde architectural icon,” added Perez. “This stadium will act as an economic and touristic driver - and
it will contribute to strengthening the image of our city.” The Bernabeu, which dates back to 1947, has been remodelled on several occasions since, although the latest effort will not increase capacity significantly. But the east stand will be replaced, to accommodate 3,000 additional seats to match the west stand. It will retain its name, although a sponsorship deal is likely to see it gain a “surname”, according to Perez. The renovation is being partiallycovered by Abu Dhabi investment fund International Petroleum Investment Company. Real initially wanted to build the hotel and shopping centre alongside the stadium, but both must now be incorporated within the existing structure. And officials are delighted that a car park will be transformed into a
public area, and that the new roof will reduce neighbourhood noise. “This deal happened to promote the modernisation project of the stadium, and to improve the urban environment around our beloved Bernabeu,” said Maylor Carmena. “There is nothing worse for a city than these kinds of impasses.” Barcelona are also expected to sell the naming rights to their newly-designed stadium, which will feature a retractable roof. And capacity will be increased to 105,000. Meanwhile, UK-based fans of the two clubs will not be able to watch the “El Clasico” derby match, which kicks off at 4.15pm on 3rd December. The TV rights are held by Sky Sports, but live football cannot be broadcast between 2.45pm and 5.15pm, the law having been created to boost attendance at league games.
Fran Delgado tried his luck for Marino with a long shot, spotted by the keeper, but Marino were having the better of the game. Mendy had one of the best home chances with a flying header that missed the post, San Fernando ended the first half with some sustained pressure, but Cicovic frustrated their best efforts. Marino brought on Facundo Valiente for Fran Alonso after the restart, but San Fernando came closest to breaking the deadlock with a looping shot over the bar from Joel, and a low shot from Cesar that Saavedra blocked. But Facundo was the sharpest when a loose ball broke to him, and his well-directed header bulged the net to make it 1-0. Ten minutes later, Marino doubled the lead, Alberto turned well and gave the keeper no chance with his crisp shot. And that should have closed the door on the visitors. But they gambled by
Sunday in a thrilling 4-3 win. And that after going a goal behind early in the match at El Medano. Tenerife rivals Tacuense would love that sort of boost. They lost their last home game 7-1 against league leaders Atletico Madrid. True, they showed a marked improvement on Sunday but still lost 2-1 at Levante.
bringing on Ale and Dani, and it paid off almost immediately. Dani pounced on a halfchance to set up David Feito, who reduced the deficit. Within five minutes it was all-square, Israel breaking on the right and firing the ball home. Marino had to regain their composure and rebuild. There was a shout for a home penalty late on when Castro went down in the box after close attention from Maikel. But it would have been a harsh call - and the ref saw it that way! Into injury-time and Marino made one last push to secure all three points, but a wide shot from Lolo Armario signalled the final whistle - and two points dropped. The Canarian section of the Tercera Division really is open now, with Marino one of four teams sharing second place. They’re a point behind the leaders, with an away game at Union Viera this weekend.

HOW WILL BREXIT AFFECT SPANISH PROPERTY OWNERS?
If you are a property owner in Spain, or you are thinking of buying a holiday home or property in Spain, read on to see how the UK leaving the European Union is likely to affect you. Will Brexit happen?
It is important to bear in mind that we have yet to invoke article 50. Even assuming article 50 is invoked, although opinion is divided on this point, it may still be possible to negotiate to remain. Given the current legal and political uncertainty, Brexit should probably not be considered to be a forgone conclusion. Are you about to Purchase a Property in Spain? Barriers to purchasing: Many non-Europeans buy property in Spain, there are no barriers to non-European property investment. Applying for a Spanish Mortgage: Non-EU
members are currently considered to be higher risk and Spanish lenders offer less favourable mortgage terms to nonEU members. Whether the British will be considered to fall into a higher risk category is yet to be seen. Obtaining an NIE number (fiscal identity for foreigners in Spain): This is a relatively straightforward exercise and there are no discrepancies for nonEuropeans. Provided you have or are about to acquire a taxable interest in Spain, you can apply for a NIE certificate. Purchase Taxes: The relevant taxes applicable to the purchase itself will not be affected as they are all applicable to Spanish nationals, EU members and non-EU members alike. Exchange Rate: The most influential factor when purchasing a property in Spain since the referendum will be the exchange rate. How will British
Residents in Spain be Affected? Visas, Blue Card, Job Opportunities: If we leave the EU the British may conceivably need to apply for a visa to remain and a Blue Card to work in Spain. Preference to EU citizens in terms of job opportunities may also be exercised, so much is likely to depend on the outcome of the negotiations for exit as to whether the British will find themselves at a disadvantage. Spanish Health Services: British residents and holiday makers may in the future need to obtain private health insurance. Spanish resources are still stretched after the devastating impact of the recession on the Spanish economy, so excluding British access to the Spanish public health system would to a certain extent alleviate the Spanish health system. Pensions: The British who have retired out to Spain will have already
notice the difference in their pensions due to the weaker pound. Future developments as to the exchange rate will depend on a number of factors and predictions vary. Whether and how the Spanish government decide to implement restrictions on British residents is impossible to predict at the moment. Would it make commercial sense for the Spanish economy? On the one hand, any restrictions are likely to mean a loss a significant degree British investment in Spain. On the other hand, certain restrictions would provide relief to overstretched Spanish resources. Thinking of Selling a Property in Spain? Exchange Rate: The exchange rate is now favourable for the British selling in Spain. Market value: The property market in Spain is beginning to show signs of recovery and prices are starting to
increase. Taxes: Capital gains tax in Spain is the same for Spanish nationals, residents and non residents alike and there is no differentiation between EU and non-EU citizens. Are you about to inherit a Spanish interest? Spanish Inheritance Tax: Spain operates a two tier system for Spanish inheritance and gift tax. Until relatively recently nonresidents were subject to a different tax regime from that of Spanish residents. However, as of 1 January 2015 the Spanish inheritance tax law for EU residents changed to allow all EU residents eligibility for the same rates as Spanish residents. In light of the recent referendum results, the current status of British beneficiaries of Spanish estates may change again. Applications for Spanish inheritance tax rebates: Applications for a rebate on overpaid tax
since the new law was implemented in Spain may now be rejected. Conclusion There is so much uncertainty at the moment even as to Brexit itself that it is difficult to predict the future. If we do leave the EU, the effect on British expats and property owners in Spain will depend, in the instances explained above, on the results of the Brexit negotiations.
