Budget battles for every cent Continued from Front Mariano Rajoy’s government must list the ways it can bring down next year’s public deficit, from 4.6% to 3.1% of GDP, details of which Brussels expects to see in the coming weeks.

This won’t be an easy task because it entails an adjustment of around 15bn euros.

The Spanish Government, hoping to minimise further austerity measures in a country which has only recently emerged from a protracted, economic

crisis, is banking on sustained economic growth to drive down the excessive deficit.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) is actually forecasting that the Spanish economy will expand 3.1% this year and 2.2% in 2017.

But the state also plans to collect an additional eight billion euros euros next year, mostly from a 5bneuro hike in corporate tax.

A further 2bn euros will definitely flood into the coffers through higher taxes on tobacco

and alcohol, and a new levy on sugary drinks.

These sorts of taxes target what experts call “negative externalities”, or the costs suffered by a third party, via consumption of taxed items - in this case, because of detrimental effects on health.

And the authorities hope to claim back another billion euros by cracking down on tax fraud, particularly on value-added tax known as IVA in Spain and IGIC in Tenerife.

The Tax Agency is planning to introduce a

mechanism which will force large companies, automatically, to file information regarding all transactions subject to IVA/IGIC. Cash payments will also be limited to 1,000 euros, down from the 2,500 ceiling set in 2012.

And the tax authorities will tighten eligibility rules for payment deferments … the state is currently owed over 10bn euros in deferred taxes.

Pierre Moscovici, the EU Economy Commissioner, is expecting Spain to list ways in

Colombia plane crash destroys football club JUST six of the 77 passengers survived Monday’s huge Colombian tragedy, in which a charter flight carrying Brazilian footballers, their club officials and guests, crashed into the side of a mountain.

Seven people were actually carried out of the plane alive, but Chapecoense goalkeeper Danilo Padilh later died in hospital. And four others, scheduled to fly, did not board.

Nine of the flight crew also perished, along with 21 journalists, on their way to cover Chapecoense’s first leg of the South American Cup finals against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional on Wednesday in Medellin, near to where the disaster occurred. Investigators examining the two black boxes (flight recorders) retrieved from LAMIA Flight 2933, discovered, via the pilot’s final

message, that there had been an electrical fault, and that the aircraft was out of fuel!

Among the victims were 20 journalists on their way to cover what was supposed to be a heart-warming chapter in a Cinderella story for a Southern Brazil team of unlikely champions likened to Leicester City after their title success last season.

Two crew members and one journalist were also rescued from the wreckage, as was reserve goalkeeper Jackson Follman, one of the three surviving players, who had a leg amputated in hospital

and was said to be in a “serious condition”.

Defender Alan Luciano Ruschel was also carried clear, and his wife, Amanda, said in an Instagram post that he was hospitalised in a stable condition.

She added: “We are praying for everyone who has not yet been rescued, and for their families. It is a complicated and difficult situation. Only God can give us strength.”

Chapecoense, ninth in Brazil’s Serie A league, and surprise finalists, were aiming to become the first Brazilian club to win the South American Cup since 2008. They

were founded in 1973 and have made their way steadily through the divisions.

And, as a gesture, the club have awarded the Cup to opponents Atletico Nacional.

Keir Radnedge, of World Soccer magazine, said: “It’s a Cinderella football story. They’ve been in the top division in Brazil for only the last couple of years, and they’ve reached the Copa Sudamericana final.

What they achieved in the last couple of years was just amazing.”

Brazil’s legendary Pele, among the many footballers and fans expressing their condolences, wrote on Twitter: “The Brazilian football family is in mourning.

“This is a tragedy. I send my condolences to the families of the deceased.

Rest in peace.”

which it will reduce the deficit in the months to come.

On Wednesday, Finance Ministry Cristóbal Montoro has also announced a plan to overhaul the administrative machinery over the 20172019 period. The move is expected to save 900m euros next year.

The full package of measures is expected to be given the greenlight by the Cabinet today (Friday), together with the spending ceiling.

This will allow authorities to start working out the regional budgets and deficit levels for next year.

South Hospital: Health chief’s final ultimatum CANARIAN Health Minister Jesus Morera has made it clear that building contractor Sacyr will be given every legal opportunity to continue working on the South Hospital.

The multi-national firm, contracted to complete the final stages of the building, left the site several weeks ago, complaining that it had under-valued the work required.

But its request for another 10% of its original, bid-winning 7.9m euros, was rejected by the Canarian Health Ministry, which insisted it would replace the company, rather than pay out another cent.

The Health authority, will almost certainly issue a “breach of contract” law suit against the company if it stands firm. But Morera is determined to turn the screw, saying: “If they don’t carry on, we will continue the necessary procedures to terminate their contract, and put the work to tender again - urgently!”

He explained that the building company intended to modify the South Hospital project “in functional aspects and materials”.

But the Health Department’s architect,

who realised that Sacyr intended to downgrade its construction work, demanded explanations about the delay.

Sacyr’s directors and technicians argued that they had detected financial risks, and intended to present alternatives.

Morera argued that the modified proposal “not only reflected the changes announced, but also included a budget increase of 10%”.

The Health chief said: “This was when we decided to start procedures to terminate their contract.

“It is our intention that this creates the least possible damage to the evolution of a project, so desired by our community.

“However, we must do things correctly, and we won’t tolerate any abuse of power by anyone.”

A 390,000-euro bond was retained by the Health Service and, should it win a “breach of contract” case, the fine could reach 600,000 euros, says the Canarian Government.

Morera added, pointedly: “The law is on our side and if they want a fight, we will give them one!”

Granadilla’s clean sweep

GRANADILLA Town Hall, along with the public cleaning company Sermugran, has expanded its fleet of cleaning vehicles by two.

The first vehicle is a 4cu/m sweeper, which will speed up a task now being performed manually. This machine has been financed through a leasing operation with CaixaBank.

It is equipped with three brushes and can sweep streets and pavements with modern equipment, which reduces emissions and fuel consumption.

The second vehicle is a skid-steer loader, which can carry out waste collections, move the buildup of sand on beach areas and perform similar tasks. It also has a backhoe and a hammer, for creating ditches.

The total investment for both vehicles was 176,850 euros, of which 27% has been financed through the recycling light-packaging in the municipality, which means there’s no cost to the Granadilla.

Mayor, José Domingo Regalado said: “The Council tries to provide Sermugran with the necessary machinery, making the work easier and allowing us achieve higher standards in street cleanliness.”

He added: “We intend to improve the levels of satisfaction with neighbours, apart from expanding the cleaning to neighbourhoods which currently don’t have street-sweepers.”

Baby-sale trio facing a trial TWO men and a woman have been arrested over the alleged 10,000euro sale of a baby, after saying it had died at birth.

Guardia Civil officers was alerted after the woman, who has not been named, told social workers in the small community of Villamartín, in Cadiz province, that her daughter’s body had been donated to science.

Police then launched Operation Princesita, or Operation Little Princess. And when officers checked at the clinic where the woman, whom they described as “of limited means”, had given birth, they discovered from the records that the child had been born alive, but had not been registered by the mother.

When questioned, the woman admitted she had been contacted by a same-sex couple, who have not been named, from the neighbouring Almería province.

That couple had offered to pay her 10,000 euros to have artificial insemination in a private clinic in Malaga, and then hand over her baby to them.

Police said it had taken two attempts for the woman to become pregnant, and that the clinic had become suspicious, given her “precarious economic situation”.

The couple had arranged with the woman to take her and the new-born infant to the Almería registry office, where the birth would be recorded. The mother was then set to sign a document before a notary, ceding the

couple guardianship of the infant.

Police said the couple had contacted a number of other young women throughout Andalusia, all of them from deprived backgrounds, in a bid to find a surrogate mother.

The arrests came three days after the birth of the baby, reportedly in good health, which was with the couple at their home.

The two men and the woman have been released on bail and are awaiting trial. The baby is now in the care of social services.

Spain passed legislation in 2005 making same-sex marriage legal. These laws also enshrined the right for gay and lesbian couples to adopt children.

However, same-sex couples have faced obstacles trying to adopt, particularly outside Europe.

Surrogate pregnancy is not legal in Spain, because the biological mother’s renouncement contract is not legally valid.

The 2006 Assisted Reproduction Law declared void any contract signed with a woman who agrees to see a pregnancy to term on behalf of another party, regardless of whether she is paid to do so or not.

Even so, demand has grown in recent years as couples circumvent the law by travelling to countries where surrogacy is legal.

Around 800 Spanish couples resort to surrogate mothers in the US every year, according to advocacy group Son Nuestros Hijos (They are our kids).

However, in recent years, Spanish couples have faced difficulties in registering the birth of children born outside the country to surrogate mothers.

In July, the European Court of Human Rights ruled in favour of two French couples, who had taken the French state to court after authorities in their native country refused to register their children, born to Indian mothers.

Rajoy is on the same Portugal wavelength SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy and his Portuguese counterpart, António Costa, have highlighted the excellent relations between the two countries - and the need to work together to tackle common challenges.

The Portugal Prime Minister was the first European leader to

visit Madrid’s Moncloa Palace since Rajoy was re-elected Government head just over one month ago.

The two leaders reviewed the main issues on the bilateral, European and international agenda, and the common challenges on which, said Rajoy during their joint appearance before the press: “It is of key importance for Portugal and Spain to work shoulder-toshoulder.”

Rajoy said he and Costa had decided to resume the bilateral

summits because “they are fundamental for strengthening political dialogue. But, above all, for resolving the real problems facing our citizens”.

The Spanish leader insisted: “The common fight against wildfires, tolls, energy interconnections and crossborder healthcare are just some of the areas of common interest affecting people on both sides of the border.”

The two men also reviewed items on the agenda for the forthcoming European

Council.

And, they agreed, they are mostly in harmony about Britain’s Brexit decision.

Rajoy hopes the UK Government will formally notify its intention to leave the European Union in March next year, which is when they will negotiate the best possible future relationship between the UK and the EU. “We will defend our general interests, including our close relationship with the UK,” he added. “But also, we will firmly

defend the process of European integration and the indivisibility of the internal market.

“In other words, we will defend the four free movements: of people, services, capital and goods.”

The two leaders also agreed that the Euro -Mediterranean countries’ have many shared interests they must safeguard - and boost!

Rajoy confirmed his participation at the European Union Summit of Mediterranean Countries, in Lisbon on 28th January next year.

He also said it was important to work hard together at the European Union Summit of Heads of State and Government in Malta’s Valletta on 3rd February, and at the Extraordinary Summit in Rome on 25th March, to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome.

Rajoy and Costa also reviewed the situation in Ukraine, Syria and Libya, and discussed the situation in Latin America: “A priority region for both Portugal and Spain”, stressed the Spanish PM.

10,000€ drones San Miguel’s big will help to find stumbling block missing walkers ZAIDA Gonzalez, Santa Cruz Security Councillor, has approved the 10,000-euro purchase of two drones in the City Council’s 2017 Security Budget for a special reason.

Gonzales, who presented the budget, wants the drones to search Anaga mountain whenever hikers go missing, saying: “This is an efficient and fast method for finding them in such a vast territory, and that is why we have

decided to invest in them.”

Beyond this novelty investment, the bulk of the 32.4m euros of the department’s budget will go towards updating the Local Police station building, and buying 39 new cars for the inhabitants.

They will be utilised by the drink-driving unit, or the Special Forces unit, and, said Cllr Gonzalez: “They will cut back a large part of the budget in repairs.”

The Civil Protection unit will also be rewarded with a new ambulance, costing 70,000 euros, as well as

the new drones.

“Having our own vehicle for the various municipal acts is cheaper than renting one,” added Gonzalez.

“And we will also be implementing a new computer system during 2017 as a 100,000euro investment.

“It will enable us to stop using paper within the police station, and there will be hand-held, PDA devices for police on the street.

“This will cut out ticket books, so everything will be done electronically.”

But updating the Santa Cruz headquarters is still pending because the building is considered of cultural interest.

Thus, for each of the three improvement phases, authorised by the Cabildo and the city planning department, 90,000 euros will be granted to buy furniture.

“Finally, there will be 200,000 euros set aside for traffic lights, billboards and the new roundabouts, plus uniforms and bulletproof vests.”

So unfair we can’t utilise our beaches IT doesn’t seem fair that every kind of activity seems to be welcome on Gran Canaria beaches, as well as those around the mainland.

But the same rules do not apply for Tenerife.

Now CEST, the South’s Small Business and Professionals Association, is complaining about “unfair treatment” by the Costas, the company responsible for the upkeep of all Spanish beaches, And Association officials are demanding that the same rules apply to both Canarian islands.

Tenerife appears to be subject to far more stringent regulations by Costas about commercial activities on its beaches than Gran Canaria and elsewhere in Spain.

“What’s forbidden here is allowed in Gran Canaria,” say those affected most.

CEST has no qualms about defending the need to protect the Islands’ marine fauna.

But, adds a spokesman: “It is as important to share the space to benefit both marine life and businesses.”

The CEST members propose that a margin along the coastal area be granted for activities here, especially where it does not affect a protected species or breeding area.

The current rules restrict tourist activities on the coast, with special emphasis on the conservation area from Teno to Punta Rasca.

This affects all the South’s main beaches, “because this rule states that these coastal areas are marine sites of Community importance (SCI)”, says CEST. And, as a result, limitations are imposed on their use without regard to the serious impact on the economy: jobs being wiped out, as well as small and mediumsized businesses disappearing.

In addition, tourists are unable to enjoy water activities on public beaches, such as jet-skiing, parascending, banana boats and others.

SAN Miguel de Abona Mayor Arturo Gonzales is concerned about the dispute between the Cabildo and the Canarian Government over building the road link from Oroteanda (just south of Las Chafiras) to the TF-1 motorway.

“It is worrying because what we need is money,” stressed Gonzales. “If it is not incorporated in the Regional budget, then we are just talking nonsense.”

He is sceptical because the project, drafted in 2014, still needs to be approved. “Land needs to be expropriated to allow for the link and then the construction to tender,” said the Mayor, who hopes that, with the 800,000 euros already allotted, work will start next year.

The Mayor is convinced that the Ministry of Public Works and the Canarian Government’s Transport Department, “have the greatest interest in undertaking this work”.

But he added: “If we cannot achieve a good, public-road maintenance agreement with the state, you can hardly execute a project like this, which requires more than 30 million euros.”

Traffic studies in the Las Chafiras vicinity highlight that the area supports 50,000 vehicles a day, plus the 70,000 using the stretch of the motorway going past the San Miguel region.

From Mayor Gonzales’ perspective, only the North motorway registers a higher volume of traffic, which is reason

enough to justify the necessary investment by the Ministry of Public Works.

The Oroteanda junction will be built at the height of the Los Erales Barranco, one kilometre south of the Las Chafiras junction.

This will allow direct access from the motorway to Guargacho, Las Galletas and Aldea Blanca.

González emphasises that the construction of this infrastructure “is fundamental” for San Miguel de Abona.

It is, he says, a “priority issue” for the region because of the impact it will have on the TF-1 motorway traffic in the South, which is jammed during rush-hour times because of the volume, especially at Las Chafiras.

Backstage at our Hard Rock Hotel

THE old Hotel Fiesta has been plucked from “backing singer” obscurity and thrust in front of the microphone.

And everywhere you look in Playa Paraiso, the Hard Rock Hotel’s twin towers dominate the skyline.

Whether it’s the daytime cream-to blue exterior that bubbles up through the 16 floors, or the twinkling lights embedded in the balconies at night, you can´t miss them.

The street entrance spans the conference centre, and the lobby, flanked by a fleet of branded black cabs, is now extremely openplan. There is a vast array of seating areas, from a small cocktail bar to a central performance area, where a young female singer was warming-up.

A skimpy, Britney Spears’ gold outfit caught my attention in one of the glass cabinets. But it was eclipsed by a doublebass, licked by blackand-white flames and once played by Tim Skold, of Marilyn Manson fame.

Signs pointed the way to the Body Rock Spa, the Teen Spirit kids’ club, and the Nirvana Tower, so I popped through to gaze up at

the second tower, named after the Seattle grunge rockers.

Although the hotel was open for business, workmen, in their official logo overalls, were still busy, completing the new look. And, despite the late hour, they were scurrying around.

Like many others, I thought just one tower was finished, but both were in use, and a lot of the remaining work is cosmetic, with more glass cabinets awaiting their memorabilia.

The relatively-small number of guests around suggested that rooms were being brought online, gradually, and those I spoke with were really complimentary about their experience.

The large Eden and splash pools looked delightful, bathed in blue light, and there is more to come!

The first thing that struck me as I came through Playa Paraiso was the new, woodenlined bridge over the road to the old seawater pool complex, now nearing the end of a

complete makeover.

In the Third Half sports bar, hotel manager Vicente Roa told me that the refurbished pool would be finished before Christmas, and that the hotel would welcome the paying public, as

before. The pool will also be included among the hotel guests’ amenities.

As well as restoring that to the local area, hotel chiefs are talking to the coastal authority about helping to improve the smart, Las Galgas beach,

which was upgraded a few years ago. The hotel has been expanded, with multi-level walkways creating plenty of wideopen areas from the relatively-enclosed space they had to work with.

I imagine that a few

female guests will be dressed in bizarre outfits at the Eighties’ launch party next Saturday (10th Dec).

They will surely have fun, retracing their steps in platform shoes and shoulder pads!

…but is Playa Paraiso set to roll?

By Colin Kirby PLAYA Paraiso, overlooked and in need of some TLC, hasn’t really sparkled since its inception, during the tourism boom of 30 years ago.

But the arrival of the Hard Rock Hotel is just the incentive it needed.

People driving down the main entrance road would always comment on the unsightly, concrete shell of an unfinished complex.

Now, though, it is being stripped down, checked out, and built up into 151 luxury apartments.

The plan is that Ocean Gardens will be open

by September 2017 to bring new life into the area.

Change is definitely in the air, I noticed several hair and beauty shops and a few new restaurants nearby.

The main stretch of long-established bars is already enjoying the Hard Rock impact.

At Francis 2 cafe-bar, opposite the hotel,

several members of the hotel staff were taking coffee and a snack at a pavement table.

The owner confirmed that business has been picking up, and a glance along the

street showed a mix of construction workers and maintenance staff - and cab-drivers were getting plenty of fares.

Upstairs at the Britannia Inn, there was a good, early-evening

crowd, and they also reported a customer boost.

It is also helpful that last year’s reorganisation of the public TITSA bus company timetables has given Playa Paraiso more frequent links to Los Gigantes up west and Las Americas and Los Cristianos down south.

The bus stops were right next to large advertising boards for designer-name outlet Plaza del Duque another indication of the influx of visitors to come as the hotel reaches full opening.

Yet there is still room for plenty of improvement. The Roca Mar shopping centre, which never took off, sits forlorn and empty, so it must be a good time to try again on this one.

Once the momentum gets going, Playa Paraiso has plenty of reasons to look to better times.

It’s got the rock … now watch it roll!

Castro sparks a week of wonder WELL, what a week it has been in the world of news.

Last Friday, Cuba’s revolutionary leader, Fidel Castro, died aged 90 after losing his battle with a long illness.

This sparked all sorts of reaction from Cuban nationals, in and out of the country, plus some varying tributes from world leaders … although only time will tell how the country will change now!

The terrible plane crash, in which Brazilian football team Chapecoense were torn apart by Monday’s awful accident in Colombia, saw most of the players killed.

Only six of the 77 people on board the plane survived the crash, which came as the team headed to Medellin for the biggest match in their history.

And what about the football abuse scandal, which has seen an NSPCC helpline flooded with 860 calls in its first week!

Unlike Operation Yewtree, it is not just focusing on historical events. As the NSPCC’s John Brown said, it would be naive to assume the abuse was all over, and that there was not “an ongoing problem in football and sport generally”.

There’s more to come

yet from this story, which is going to blow the world of sport wide open.

And Donald Trump has been in the news again, this time causing scandal by calling Barack Obama “The founder of Isis”.

Trump’s declaration echoed an attack he made against Hillary Clinton last week, in which he said the former US secretary of state “should get an award from them as the founder of Isis”.

Meanwhile in Spain (see page 16), we are giving pigeons contraceptive pills!

We all managed to survive Black Friday and Cyber Monday, spending billions in shops and online, getting ready for Christmas …And yesssss!!! The 1st of December has arrived, which means I can put up my Christmas tree officially without getting abuse (it has been up for over a week), the first Christmas songs and jingles have been played on Oasis Fm, and I got to open the door number one on my Advent calendar … now, I just need to find out which DJ stole the chocolate!

A new survey by travel agency On The Beach found potential fliers in a frugal mood, with 43% saying they would rather have cheaper tickets than free food and drink.

And 40% said they would prefer the airlines to ditch on-board entertainment and cut the fares.

Getting down to the

finer points, the survey found that tummies can be an influence: 27% said they would pay

extra for better flight food quality.

It seems that discerning Brits will go

to any lengths to save a few quid, because 27% said they could do without reclining seats.

How about the 2% who even said they could hold on without a toilet on the plane!

As for the biggest waste of money, 57% said they would gladly rip up the free in-flight magazine.

That´s maybe a sign of the technological age we live in, because 22% voted Yes to paying extra for Wifi, and 11% wanted complimentary IPads.

But no one went as far as saying that he or she would be happy just sitting out on the wing!

Tragedy sparks help for victims of heart-attacks A TAXI-DRIVER, who suffered a fatal heart attack in July of last year while awaiting customers, has shocked San Miguel Council into action.

The tragedy occurred outside Golf del Sur’s Santa Barbara hotel, but colleagues who tried to help him were unaware of how serious his condition was.

Important time was lost, and the poor cabbie’s life might have been saved had the right equipment been at hand.

The incident shocked Isidora González, San Miguel’s newlyappointed Security Councillor, because he knew the taxi-driver well.

Such was his sorrow that he has had defibrillators (heartrhythm monitors) installed in strategic positions to give other heart-attack victims a fighting chance of survival.

The devices have been installed throughout the municipality as part of the Ministry of Health’s Location Map for Semi-automatic and Automatic Defibrillators, enabling neighbours, visitors and

tourists to know the exact location of each unit.

San Miguel Mayor Arturo Gonzalez said they were distributed to cultural, sports and leisure facilities, as well as in tourist areas of Costa San Miguel, in industrial and commercial areas and in Local Police stations.

“The aim is that the general public can respond immediately to a heart attack, until emergency services arrive,” said Mayor Gonzalez.

He confirmed that this initiative makes San Miguel “the first town in Tenerife to be Cardioprotected”.

Defibrillators will allow action “within the time limit, the first seven minutes after a heart attack, before an ambulance arrives”.

Both the Mayor and the Council are convinced that the 12 installed units will be increased shortly.

In fact, some petrol stations and tourist establishments have already shown interest in expanding the new network.

Alfonso Delgado, from La Caixa’s social work department, which supports the project, confirmed that each unit costs 1,400 euros.

The defibrillators are located in the football fields of San Miguel, Las Zocas and Guargacho; in hotels Sandoz (San Blas) and Santa Bárbara (Golf del Sur); Cho Pancho recreational centre sports pavilion; Llano del Camello cultural centre; the Local Police headquarters and the Conforama company, in Las Chafiras.

Thousands die early, through air pollution AN estimated 29,980 premature deaths were cause by air pollution in Spain three years ago according to the Air Quality in Europe - 2016 report.

It has been released by the European Environment Agency (EEA) and number, based on data obtained from official monitoring stations around Europe, marks a slight downturn on the EEA’s 2012 estimate of 33,200 deaths there.

For the entire European Union, the total deaths

attributable to exposure to fine, particulate matter (PM2,5), groundlevel ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) was nearly 520,000 in 2013 - up from 491,000 a year earlier.

As for individual contaminants, the EEA stressed that PM2,5, linked to traffic and diesel fuel, was responsible for most pollutionrelated deaths in 2013, both in the EU as a whole, and particularly in Spain.

Germany (73,400 deaths), Italy (66,630), France (45,120) and Poland (48,270) headed the list of countries with most early deaths linked to exposure to

Gara’s jogging dream

GARA Brito Placer, a 29-year-old from Santa Cruz, has a lifelong ambition: she wants to go jogging regularly, but needs an orthopaedic sports leg.

Tragically, she was diagnosed with bone cancer in her right leg at the age of three … and, three years later, it had to be amputated.

Since then Gara, who has family in Güímar, has used a basic orthopaedic leg, which is changed every two years by Social Security surgeons.

She has been offered a sport’s version for 13,000 euros, but even that will not allow her to run. Gara actually needs an orthopaedic sport’s leg, costing 58,000 euros, to fulfil her aim.

The fund-raising Iraitza Association, which collects plastic bottletops), has adopted her cause. But she and her supporters will have to collect a staggering 53 tons of them to cover the cost of the required leg.

Dácil López Bonfante, Gara’s chief supporter, friend and gym companion, organised a charity day last Sunday in Güímar, which attracted 1,000 people and exceeded all expectations.

A large sum of money was collected through raffles, with carnival groups and bands entertaining the public throughout.

Also, thousands of plastic bottle-tops poured in to help boost her fund.

Dácil López, delighted with the day’s turnout, said: “This is just the start - we won’t stop fighting for Gara.”

PM2,5 that year. The EEA put the number of these deaths in Spain at 23,940 that year, while the EU’s total figure was 436,000.

The EEA study reveals that Italy, Germany, France, Spain and Poland are most affected when it comes to early deaths, via O3 exposure.

This was the cause of 2013’s 1,760 deaths in Spain, according to the environmental watchdog.

A recent study by “green” group Ecologists in Action stated that from 2014 to 2016, 10.2 million Spaniards, or 21.8% of the population, lived in areas where legal exposure to O3 limits was exceeded.

And though levels for other contamination have dropped during Spain’s long, economic crisis, this has not been the case with O3.

This gas is not produced directly during the burning of fossil fuels, or through industrial processes.

FEWER than 20% of people aged from 16-30 are living outside the family home for the first time in 12 years.

In the second quarter of 2016, the figure was 19.6%, which was a 4.84% increase on that 2015 period, says Spain’s Youth Council.

And of those who have managed to leave their parents, just 16.7% are living alone.

Ana Llorente, 27, says she has worked in shops, as a waitress, and in offices. She is currently employed as an auxiliary in a private clinic.

She has a journalism degree from Madrid’s prestigious Complutense University, but has never earned more than 300 euros a month. “I never managed to do any internships, and nobody will employ me because you need at least five years’ experience to find a position,” she says.

She sends her CV out regularly, “but with no hope” of a reply. Her priority is to leave her family home before finding a job in her field,

These activities generate precursors which, combined with solar radiation, form ozone in the lower layers of the atmosphere.

The third contaminant analysed by the EEA was NO2, which is also related to traffic. This was said to be responsible for 4,280

premature deaths in Spain in 2013 while the figure for 41 countries studied by the EEA was 71,000.

“Emission reductions have led to improvements in air quality in Europe, but not enough to avoid unacceptable damage to human health and the environment,” said

EEA Executive Director Hans Bruyninckx.

“We need to tackle the root causes of air pollution, which calls for a fundamental, innovative transformation of our mobility, energy and food systems.

“This process of change requires action from us all, including public authorities, businesses, citizens and the research community.”

Madrid has the worst record for air pollution levels in Spain, and one of the blackest spots is the area around its central Retiro Park.

Other cities with areas showing dangerouslyhigh levels of air pollution consistently are Barcelona, Granada, Palma de Mallorca and Bilbao, says the country’s Environment Ministry.

In early November, Madrid unveiled draft proposals aimed at cleaning up the city’s air, including a possible ban on nonresidents’ cars in the city centre.

Home … not always as sweet as it sounds

“In the end, most people give up on working in the area they studied for so that they can leave home,” she says.

The official unemployment rate among the under-30s is 34.4%, but the reality is that only two out of every 10 under-24s are working, more than 55% are on short-term contracts, while 60% are earning under 1,000 euros a month.

Spain’s Youth Council also says 500,000 young people have left Spain to look for work since 2013.

The Council’s Victor Reloba says that while unemployment has fallen slightly, young people are unable to leave the family home because, even if they are in work, they will likely be on zero-hours contracts, short-term contracts, or earning

money from a number of different activities.

“One in four young people is poor,” he says, sadly, if not confidently.

Most under-30s who have left home are living in shared accommodation with two or more other people.

José Cuesta, aged 30, moved to Madrid from his native Córdoba in search of work in his field of advertising.

He now lives in an apartment in the centre of the capital with three other people.

“My next step is to find a better-paid job, that will allow me to rent somewhere on my own,” he says.

Given that the average monthly salary for under-30s is 890 euros, and a one-bedroom apartment or studio rental is 470 euros, it is hardly surprising that so many young people have to share, says Reloba.

Laura Carrasco, just

21, is angry, very angry!

She studied to be a chef but hasn’t been able to find work because employers require three years’ experience.

Now, though studying sound and lighting, and earning around 200 euros monthly, by setting up stages for concerts in her spare time, she admits: “I can’t ever see myself being able to leave home at this rate.”

Of her 30-or-so friends, Laura says only two have stable jobs. “The reality of the world out there is very disheartening when it comes to leaving home,” she says. “You see older people who have been studying for years and still can’t find a decent job.

“A lot of people in my circle of friends who are a bit older have had to go abroad to find work we’re very angry.”

It’s little wonder she is angry … they’re all angry!

ARAFO Councillor Francis Hernández put the cat among the pigeons during Saturday night’s Miss Gay Tenerife competition in the town.

“We are proud to work with the LGBT community in the fight for full integration of diversity,” said Cllr Hernández. “But, at the same time, I’m ashamed of my town for holding a Miss Gay Tenerife.

“It reminds me of the cruel image of the Seventies’ cabarets, which denigrated

people who did this type of work to survive.”

He added: It is a pity that Arafo buys into this type of show, which sets back the LGBT community.

But today, where equality remains an unfulfilled goal, Miss Gay Tenerife is really about transformation … those who enjoy dressing like the opposite sex.

Valeria Santana (Pedro Perez), from Los Realejos, was elected Miss Gay Atlantico XL.

NEARLY 40 years after the original band formed, The Dire Straits Experience gave a new energy to all big hits.

Original members Chris White (on sax and flute), and Chris Witten (drums) stoked up the memories.

And Terence Reis

had the tough task of recreating the distinctive style of front man Mark Knopfler, nailing it with vocals and guitar.

The hits flowed during the two hourshow in Adeje, the big guns like Walk Of Life, Lady Writer, and Brothers In Arms had the 2,000 crowd up and dancing.

Lesser-known tracks like Once Upon A Time

In The West, and The Man´s Too Strong, were reminders of the range and song-writing skills of the iconic band.

The music wave rocked and rolled until hitting its peak with Sultans Of Swing, only to surge again for the encores, Money For Nothing and the soulful Going Home.

The MTV generation might have grown up, but they still love their classic rock.

Teacher faces prison over teenager ‘affair’ A BRITISH teacher has been arrested over allegations that he was conducting an illegal affair with a teenage student at a private school in Almeria.

Carlo Troiano, accused of sexually-abusing the 15-year-old, faces up to six years behind bars under Spanish law.

The alleged affair was reported by the girl’s mother, who claimed it had started when her daughter, also a foreign national, was just 14.

St George’s British School of Almeria, in Roquetas de Mar, has already sacked the 39-year-old. Headmaster Neil Morris told parents that Troiano “ceased working at the school from 14th November”.

Preserve our coast

ADEJE authorities, along with waste-disposal company Ascan Torrabonaf UTE, last Saturday launched an environmental awareness campaign, aimed at keeping the La Caleta coast clean.

The Town Hall encouraged the general public to join in and help this initiative, which ran from 10am to 1pm. There were also informative workshops and activities.

Throughout the day, there was a first-aid workshop for marine fauna, which explains what to do if we find an animal in danger.

‘Dangerous’ Brit is one of Spain’s most-wanted

The arrest of the married father-of-two could even have implications in the UK. In 2010 Troiano was cleared of having a sexual relationship with a 16-year-old student at Bankfield High School, near War-

rington. Troiano, an IT teacher from the Wirral, on Merseyside, was cleared of three charges of enticing sexual activity with a student after a four-day trial at Warrington Crown Court.

Nevertheless, he was

dismissed by the high school, later accusing the headmaster who oversaw the investigation as biased.

He also described the allegations as “malicious rumours”, protesting his

innocence throughout.

Troino was believed to have left for Spain shortly afterwards. At present he is being held in Almeria’s provincial prison El Acebuche, while police investigate the allegations.

Couple’s home to be bulldozed, for a road AN expat couple in Malaga are being made homeless by their heartless Alhaurin el Grande Town Hall, which has performed a last-minute Uturn on plans to build a one-way system - through their property!

Disabled Brit John Gray and his wife, Deborah, say their home is being demolished to make way for the road.

They also say the town hall promised the road would be diverted around their home.

“It is absolutely heartbreaking,” said Deborah, who works in telesales. “We were promised that the plans would be altered to avoid our home.

But the Town Hall have gone back on

their word and there is nothing we can do.”

The adjoining houses have already been demolished, leaving a perfect “entrance” for burglars, who have helped themselves a number of times.

So far, possessions worth around £600 have been stolen, including a power washer, kitchen appliances and tools.

John a 76-year-old retired bricklayer from Hertfordshire, uses a wheelchair because of his lung disease, COPD, and he is being tested for suspected cancer.

The couple, now forced to take the 35,000 euros offered originally by the town hall, paid nearly twice that sum in 2003 for the two-bedroom, twobathroom property.

A Town Hall spokesman said that it had looked into alternatives, but denied a written agreement was ever agreed.

GARETH Edwards, wanted for a violent robbery in the UK, has been named among the 10 most-wanted international fugitives

by Spain’s National Police.

The 25-year-old, from Salford, Greater Manchester, and believed to be hiding out on the Costa del Sol or Costa Blanca, faces three life sentences for his crimes.

In the Crimestoppersstyle, Operation Captura appeal, Edwards (above) was named alongside nine other fugitives, including drug-dealers, killers and a member of the Italian Mafia.

A police spokesman said: “He is a very dangerous person and is possibly armed and carrying drugs.

He has a history of being violent.”

Five of the fugitives are wanted by Spanish courts, while the other five are being hunted in connection with crimes in Europe and north Africa.

Five gangs were all connected by drugs SPAIN’S Guardia Civil have smashed no fewer than five drug gangs, seemingly connected, throughout the country.

For three years, teams of officers have been investigating a number of individuals of different nationalities.

They belonging to five groups, who, officers believe, were involved in the distribution throughout Spain of illegal, “recreational” drugs, as well as prohibited substances used to enhance sporting achievements.

As the officers became more convinced that their investigations were identifying various groups involved, they also became aware that a great deal of the money collected by the gangs was being “laundered” to make

it appear legal. Thus, a decision was taken to carry out a number of raids of properties in Alicante, Cantabria, Granada, Malaga and Valencia.

This resulted in the arrest of nine Spaniards and 13 others interviewed, involving more Spaniards and people of other nationalities, including one from Britain.

During the raids, the Guardia Civil removed a number of computers, and also seized documentation which suggested that some 1,846,000 euros had passed through the money-laundering system.

There were also numerous mobile phones among the haul, 13 expensive vehicles, which may have been registered to one party but actually owned by another, and a huge amount of prohibited substances.

Corona boss not THAT generous

CORONA beer founder Antonio Fernandez did NOT create millionaires out of every person in his home village of Cerezales del Condado, in northern Spain, as reported.

That he had set aside one million euros in his will for every villager was simply not true, even though that so-called fact had been broadcast throughout Russia, the US and Britain.

The billionaire, who died at the age of 98 in August, did, however, leave 200m euros for his family living there. And anyway, the villagers had benefited immensely from his generosity over the years.

Antonio grew up in

the tiny Spanish village, one of 13 children, who produced countless children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews between them, despite Fernandez not having any with his wife of 60 years.

He paid for the restoration of the church and helped open a cultural centre. He was also responsible for bringing running water to people’s homes.

His philanthropic work, particularly helping disabled people throughout Spain, was recognised by former Spanish King Juan Carlos.

True to his “modest man” description, Antonio, had little taste for the extravagance shown by many billionaires.

He was known as a genuine home-town hero by all who knew him there.

Boozed-up passengers ditched by cabin crew GROUP of boozed-up passengers, including a woman with two children, were thrown off a British Airways flight after staff refused to serve them more alcohol.

Furious customers on flight BA 2731, travelling from Tenerife to Gatwick, were held up for two hours while cabin crew removed the group.

According to eye-witnesses, Charlotte, a wom-

an in her twenties, had been drinking at a bar in Tenerife South airport before becoming embroiled in an argument about being a “benefits” mum. She then began demanding more alcohol after boarding the plane.

Furious passengers on the Airbus A320 were held up for two hours, until cabin crew removed her and other drunken travellers.

cheered when the pilot eventually ordered her and five other people in her party to leave the plane. But disgruntled James Griffiths took to Twitter to voice his frustration, writing: “Delayed due to drunk being removed from flight. Bigger question though, why crew let her on?”

According to The Sun newspaper, the woman said: “I’ve paid for my

flight and I know I am entitled to it.”

A British Airways spokesman said: “Our customers and crew deserve to enjoy their flights without any form of disruption.

“This sort of behaviour will not be tolerated, and the appropriate action will always be taken. We are sorry to our customers for the short delay on this flight.”

Car-makers really booming overseas SPAIN’S car-makers are supplying more and more motors to countries outside the EU, especially America, Turkey and Algeria, as well as South Korea and Mexico.

It all adds up to a mighty 176% increase since 2009, 455,958 cars being exported outside

the EU in the last 12 months, compared with just 164,946 seven years ago. But France, Germany, Italy and the UK remain the biggest consumers. In all, 1.85 million vehicles were sent abroad during the first three quarters of 2016, up 8.4% from the previous year.

Old-time boxer, 82, knifes his daughter

NATIONAL Police have arrested 82-yearold former Spanish amateur boxing champion Francisco Gomez Muñoz, who is accused of stabbing his daughter at his Santa Cruz home.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening, when the 50-yearold victim visited her father, who, for reasons unknown, is said to have stabbed her in the back.

She also had defence

wounds on her hands and was taken to Candelaria hospital in a critical condition.

Her father then tried to take his own life, but suffered minor wounds only.

Gómez, who fought as Zurdo Price, was Spanish amateur flyweight champion in 1951, when he was 17.

He went on to represent his country, turning professional years later at welterweight.

THEY were rolling down the Tenerife streets on Tuesday and Saint Andrew’s Day (Wednesday) and, for our Scottish friends, it surely involved a few whiskies.

But for Canarians in Icod de Los Vinos, it was all about wine!

San Andrés is Tenerife’s patron saint of wine, and 30th November marks the day that wine barrels are, traditionally, broken open.

The wood used to be converted in to trays, or table-tops, which clattered down the steep, Icod side-roads before hitting the

buffers, made from old tyres.

This fine tradition has been tamed a little in recent years to avoid injuries, yet the makeshift karts and table-tops are still pretty basic, and there are plenty of thrills and spills.

Many youngsters enjoyed practice runs on Tuesday, the eve of the big day. But the main celebration, in the heart of wine-making territory, took place on San Andrés Day itself.

A procession from the church plaza was held at 7pm … and it was all downhill from there on.

And, as the daredevils enjoyed their racing, the majority tucked into roasted chestnuts and local wines.

The spectacle attracted thousands of neighbours and

visitors around the streets, especially to watch the daredevils come down the steep El Plano street, where some table-tops lift high off the ground to be cushioned, moments later, by the tires.

The eve of San Andrés is the most awaited moment for lovers of this tradition, and it continued on Wednesday in the town of the famous Drago tree.

While all eyes were on the steepest streets in Icod, noise from the oncoming table-tops, screeching down the roads ,could be heard in La Orotava, Los Realejos, Puerto de la Cruz, Santa Ursula and Tacoronte.

And it is certainly one of the nosiest traditions in the North of the island.

Fraud lottery gang torn apart rapidly AN illegal lottery group, running in Malaga for more than eight years and collecting up to 1m euros annually, has been busted by regional police.

Jose Luis Ruiz Espejo, Junta de Andalucia regional government representative for the province, said an extensive, joint operation by the police and the anti-gambling services, led to 27 arrests and the confiscation of 172,298 “La Rapida”

quick lottery tickets.

“Members of every level of the organisation’s hierarchy, from the leader to the street vendors, have been identified and arrested,” said Ruiz Espejo.

“And the group’s operating headquarters in Campillos has been located.”

Along with the head of the organisation, others arrested include three collectors and 23 ticketsellers, and officers confiscated 2,400 euros in cash, as well as the illegal tickets.

The operation followed a similar one in August, which featured

44 arrests and 163,590 La Rapida tickets destroyed.

Paperwork and accounts found at the headquarters revealed that the criminals were pocketing up to one million euros per year.

Ruiz Espejo congratulated everyone involved in the police operation for the intense work put in to end to the illegal gambling activities.

He said the case was now in the hands of the courts, which could issue fines of up to 300,000 euros for running an unauthorised lottery system.

Four suspected of links with IS

FOUR people, believed by the Guardia Civil to have connections with the Islamic State (IS), and secretive immigration routes in Europe, were arrested at the weekend.

Two were held in Almería (Andalusia) and the other two in the towns of Arteixo and Tufions-Vimianzo (Galicia).

The Home Office would not specify their nationality, ages or gender, or what the charges were.

But a spokesperson said they were “linked to an irregular immigration network that could have been used by the Islamic State”.

Hotels unfairly treating some of their workers WORK inspectors have begun legal proceedings against two hotels here in the South, which, they say, have been using discriminating practices concerning their housekeeping staff.

According to the Canarian Work Commission, there were salary pacts made by company owners and the hotels, in which housekeepers received monthly salary bonuses of 22.59 euros and 105.51 euros, compared with the 352.85 and 515.12 euros per month paid to the bar staff.

The Commission has denounced these agreements because both housekeeping and bar staff come under the same hospitality employment group, and the hotels cannot justify such a huge difference in bonuses - unless they are discriminating against housekeepers for being women.

These agreements go against the SpanishConstitution and Labour laws, which contain non-discrimination clauses, particularly on remuneration by gender.

In addition to these complaints, there are another 10 lawsuits against hotels in the South going through the labour courts for the same infractions.

Arona determined to boot out harassment ARONA Council has introduced rules against harassment and sexual harassment in the workplace, which lay down measures of prevention, awareness, action and precaution.

The aim is to avoid this nasty conduct, which will now constitute a serious disciplinary offence - and a crime!

The Council said the legislation would be

backed up with psychosocial risk studies, in addition to awareness campaigns and staff training.

These campaigns have already been activated, with five prevention courses being taught by sociologists and experts, who deal with these forms of harassment.

Arona Mayor José Julián Mena said that both the Council and its dependencies “lack these essential tools on how to deal with harassment and discrimination cases”.

He added: “Presumption of innocence will be granted, as well as respect and protection of privacy, confidentiality and fairness. And the protection of human dignity.”

Arona Council is committed to implement procedures that can prevent, detect and eradicate psychological risks to male or female workers.

It will also take measures against behaviour that could initiate harassment, sexual harassment or gender discrimination in the workplace.

Clean-water bid for San Miguel THE Cabildo has started working on a new, underground, pumping station and drive pipeline to treat the water supply in Llano del Camello, in San Miguel de Abona.

It is hoped that this new water-treatment plant will solve the sewage collection

issues, which is growing continually in the area.

The Government’s Housing Minister, Aurelio Abreu, and San Miguel Mayor Arturo Gonzalez, signed off on the official construction work, which is costing 224,000 euros and will be completed in four months.

Gonzalez said: “This will solve a lot of problems, which are often not seen as they are underground. But

they are basic services and essential for sanitation.

“However, we still have the most difficult task to complete, which is the general sanitation collector in the municipality that runs under the highway section. But we are moving forward with this issue.”

The construction work will run parallel with the TF-1, to be completed in two phases.

Bermúdez taxi plan ruled out SANTA Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermúdez has failed for the second time to impose a standard taxi-fare rate in the capital.

He was confident the Canarian Government would approve it this time, but the Price Commission has denied the motion again.

The reasons are still unknown, but Public Services Councillor Dámaso Arteaga, who said the City Council would appeal, added: “This decision proves that Santa Cruz is discriminated against, compared with the other Tenerife municipalities.”

The baffled Councillor complained: “It does not make sense that you take a taxi anywhere in La Laguna and Rate 3 (highest rate) is applied, but this in not applicable in the capital.

“We defended the tariff

modification to equate the urban Rate 1 (2.15 euros) to Rate 3 (3.05 euros), because it would also have improved the Santa Cruz taxi-drivers’ income, and also because it is applied in the majority of the island.”

Fined, for driving around a car park A BAFFLED motorist has been fined for leaving a Derby car park after driving around a car park for 11 minutes because he couldn’t find a space suitable to let his sick wife out.

Frustrated David Shooter, 65, eventually gave up and drove to another park. But he was stunned to receive a £60 fine by post because he hadn’t bought a ticket at the packed Siddals Road car park.

The retired headteacher, from Checkley, Staffordshire, has criticised the owners, Euro Car Parks, for its “miserly” attitude after rejecting his appeal.

He said: “I was there for only 11 minutes, and I have had to pay £60 for the privilege. I didn’t even park up in a space, so I thought I had good grounds to appeal.

“But they threw it out and wrote back saying that if I did not pay the fine in a set number of days, they would start court proceedings against me.”

Mr Shooter added: “I didn’t want the hassle of going through all that,

so I paid up. But what a miserly attitude.”

His wife suffers illhealth and Mr Shooter wasn’t able to find a space in the car park that would enable her to walk easily to Derby Theatre, where they were heading.

“We drove around for a while looking for a space that wasn’t in a pothole or a puddle,” he said. “We were having no luck so I stopped the car briefly.

“But I noticed that if we parked there, it meant my wife would have to climb steps to get to the theatre, which she was unable to do because of health complications.

I looked at my sat nav and found an alternative park, so we left.

“But it transpires that the owners of Siddals Road car park have cameras that film cars coming in and leaving.”

Mr Shooter said ruefully: “The performance we went to see was thoroughly enjoyable, but if I’d known how much it was going to cost me, I might have thought twice about driving to Derby to see it.”

B A RC E L O N A City Council has put its 85,000-pigeon population on a version of the Pill… and more than 150 animal welfare groups are celebrating!

These new controls will replace the controversial rounding-up and killing of pigeons, which are threatening to take over the historic centre, leaving their droppings on monuments, listed buildings and tourists.

Barcelona officials have been receiving expert advice over contraceptive methods, which could cut numbers by as much as 80% within four to five years. The drug actually inhibits the formation of eggs in birds.

Pigeons are a staple of Barcelona’s Plaça de Catalunya, where scores of cafes, theatres and historical architecture are being damaged by bird droppings.

The first step will be to count the number of pigeons, a huge task which is being undertaken this month and next. Meanwhile, the Council has

confirmed that culling will be suspended, to avoid interfering with the results.

From next April, some 40 special feeding-dispensers will be installed in Barcelona districts, each containing contraceptive food. The first results will be analysed at the end of 2017.

A Council spokesman said: “We will be using nicarbazin, which acts first on the younger birds. We predict there will be a 20% reduction in the pigeon population

in the first year, and between 70-80% in four to five years.”

The authority believes the method will allow them to abandon culling permanently, and experts from Barcelona are adding their advice.

Animal-rights groups are delighted with the decision because 152 organisations had earlier protested about the “unethical” method of catching the pigeons in nets, and then killing them.

Barcelona, Spain’s

second most populous city after Madrid, is famed for its beautiful architecture, and is a tourist hotspot. And a concerned Commission for the Protection of Animals had led the fight for change for months.

The use of the Pill for pigeons has been operating successfully for more than 15 years throughout Europe, especially in several Catalan municipalities, and in Alicante and Valencia.

Big Brother will be watching you Shedding light on A “SNOOPERS” charter, passed in the UK Parliament, will enable the police, NHS and the taxman to hack into your phones and check your browsing history.

The bill, officially called the Investigatory Powers Bill, forces electronic data to be stored for a year by internet providers, which can, subsequently, be collected by law enforcement.

And a blogger has now created a list of all the people allowed to request a viewing of your internet history should the bill passes

Royal Assent to become law.

The act, replacing the previous Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act, was passed by the House of Lords last week after they backed down on an amendment.

It would have forced the press to pay court costs for both parties in any case involving allegations of phone or email hacking, even if they were completely spurious.

The new law introduces new surveillance and hacking powers.

Chris Yui, general manager at Uber, in Edinburgh, wrote in his personal blog: “I always wondered what it would feel like to be suffocated by the sort

of state intrusion that citizens are subjected to, in places like China, Russia and Iran. I guess we’re all about to find out.”

He listed the 48 departments which will have access to information such as internet browsing history, set out in Schedule 4 of the Act. These include police, GCHQ, government departments such as the Home Office and MoD, Department of Health, the Food Standards Agency, HM Revenue & Customs and the Gambling Commission.

This part of the act also sets out the minimum office or rank each person within those organisations

must hold if they want access to the records.

In the police, for example, they must be an inspector or a superintendent at least!

The access also works, regardless of whether or not you clear your history, because it will be held by your internet service provider.

That provider must keep logs for a year and hand them over to the government on request, whether users want them to or not.

The lists will include every website which has been visited, but not specific pages on those websites.

But though critics have cited it as an attack on privacy, the Government believes the charter is essential for combating terrorism and organised crime.

One peer said it would have “chilled” journalism and prevented papers writing about figures such as disgraced former BHS chief Sir Philip Green.

Lord Myners said the amendment to implement section 40 of the Crime and Courts Acts 2013 would have made it easier for the rich to sue on spurious grounds.

The German Christian charity ship, which has attracted 400 volunteers from more than 50 nations, is stopping off in Santa Cruz port tomorrow (Saturday) for a few days, and will be open for free tours of the 132m-long converted ferry. Education through books is just a part of the ship’s

mission. It has been all over the world spreading its message of hope as the volunteer crew go into communities to help with charitable work.

This third ship in the fleet was bought and refitted in 2004, but the charity’s first ship

hit the water in 1970.

Since then, one million visitors a year have been welcomed aboard.

The crew speak a range of languages and are happy to share their shore time with as many people as possible. Just head for their mooring area, via the ferry port.

Opening times are 10am-9.30pm tomorrow, 2-9.30pm on Sunday and Monday, then 10am-9.30pm on Tuesday and Wednesday.

The crew will be then on their travels again, with calls coming up in Guyana and Trinidad.

Thankfully, it did not power the tube network because the chaos could have been immeasurable.

But that was no consolation to traders, who must have lost a fortune on the year’s biggest-bargain day.

POLICE in Japan, anxious to make the roads safer, are offering old folk a chance to swap their driving licences for cheap meals.

True, the number of traffic accidents there has fallen in recent years.

But, overall, figures show that crashes involving the over-75s has risen from 7.4% to 12.8% in the last 10 years.

This has promoted the Prime Minister to take action, via the police force, and aged drivers in Aichi, a central Japan town, will receive discount on noodles at nearly 200 restaurants in the country if they hand in their licences.

Other incentives include discounts at public baths, barbers and pharmacies, as well as lower taxi fares.

A similar campaign in Tokyo rewards retiring drivers with certificates in recognition of their years spent behind the wheel.

More forceful measures will also be introduced next year when drivers aged over 74, stopped by police for traffic offences or have poor judgement during standard tests, will be referred to their doctors.

But while many pensioners have already traded in their licences, the scheme has caused concern for some old folk in rural areas, who say they would be isolated without a car.

The Euro is still wobbly

DESPITE increased confidence in German business, the euro was not strengthened by positive data released last week. In fact, it performed badly against the pound and the dollar.

Investors are concerned that the antiestablishment feeling present throughout the west will affect stability, and the EU banks.

Next year will bring the presidential election in France, as well as 2017 elections in Germany and the Netherlands.

This will leave the European Central Bank re-evaluating global risks, because political

uncertainty, particularly in advanced economies, can really heighten uncertainty worldwide.

The British Chancellor Philip Hammond has delivered his first Autumn Statement, giving the pound an unexpected lift. And it was expected to retain the strength it gained last week.

Mario Draghi, President of the European Central Bank, discussed economic and monetary developments on Monday, in relation to the UK’s vote to leave the EU. And, as expected, this didn’t have much impact on sterling.

Speaking of Brexit, there is still major confusion over whether Article 50 can be triggered without Parliamentary approval, although Prime Minister Theresa May is continuing the “fight” to do so.

With migration reform the key basis for the vote-to-leave victory, there are rumours that both this and access

to the EU can be retained, even if Article 50 is triggered. That’s because another Article (127) is required to leave the EEA … a continuing headache for Mrs May. On Wednesday we saw volatility on the currency markets, with RBS coming out as the worst performer among major UK lenders in the

Bank of England’s UK Banks’ Stress Tests.

This saw the pound weaken slightly. And any surprises at the all-day OPEC meeting could reflect in movement across the markets.

The rest of this week will have brought figures for the Manufacturing PMI in both the Eurozone

and UK. The Eurozone Unemployment Rate is expected to stay at 10%.

Today (Friday), we will have the UK Construction PMI, which should decline slightly, and, last but not least, the Spanish Unemployment Change.

On a more local front, a report compiled by Notaries across Spain

has shown that there has been a huge rise in foreign buyers of Spanish properties.

In 2008, 6% of buyers were foreigners or not resident in Spain, but this has increased to a whopping 19.7% in the first half of 2016.

Off-plan nightmare over SPAIN’S Supreme Court could finally offer closure to around 100,000 Britons, whose dreams of owning a place in the sun ended when constructors and builders went bankrupt, or simply disappeared and left the development unfinished.

With a new Court Ruling in place, many Britons who lost their deposit to secure an “off-plan”property and/ or who made further stage payments, can now claim back their lost monies.

The average deposits paid were at least £60,000 and some much higher, as the companies involved were hit by Spain’s financial crisis, which began in 2008.

Now, Spain’s highest court is holding the banks responsible for the missing money deposited in their accounts.

And this could enable British

victims to claim back up to £4bn in lost deposits, according to research by the Spanish Legal Reclaims law firm.

Although official data is not available, Spanish Legal Reclaims estimates that Spanish banks could be forced

to refund as much as £15bn to “off-plan” buyers from across Europe, who lost their deposits in the recession.

Stephanie Davis and her late husband, who lost around 75,000

euros, intended buying their place in the sun on the Costa del Sol. They had paid this as a deposit, plus several additional payments, totalling over half the150,000euro asking price.

Rose’s sister Vera arrives in Moybeg for her annual visit, much to the delight of Emma, Francis and Kate.

Michael looks on wearily as Vera fills Emma’s head with talk of boys, and offers, with a wink, to help in the pub later on. The next day, as Rose and Vera walk through the parish, Captain Dreyfuss pulls up in his jeep to ask for Rose’s help with a project - a Christmas party for the children on the base. Vera is blown away by this handsome Captain.

That evening Vera sashays into the bar looking spectacular.

Davey, Ned and the American pilots are mesmerised and request a song but as the atmosphere gets a little too raucous Michael asks Vera to go home. The following morning, Rose tends to a hungover Vera and learns that her sister is attracted to Dreyfuss. Vera takes the opportunity to flirt with Dreyfuss and invites him to lunch - much to Vera’s delight.

Dreyfuss accepts but asks if he can bring another office. Rose, having a rare drink, opens up to Vera about her longing for Dreyfuss, despite being happily married. She asks Vera to spare Dreyfuss so that she can hold on to her dream. As Rose nervously sets the table Vera opens the door to Captain Dreyfuss and Lieutenant Tillie Zeigler.

Lawful Killing: Mark Duggan BBC1, 20.30

Lawful Killing is a 90-minute documentary with dramatic reconstructions of the police shooting of Mark Duggan in Tottenham in August 2011.

The incident triggered the worst riots in living memory, with the impact extending far beyond the Duggan family and the community of Tottenham. Significant elements of what actually happened that day in August 2011 remain unclear, despite a Coroner’s Inquest and a lengthy IPCC Investigation.

This documentary recounts in forensic detail the events surrounding the death of Mark Duggan, with exclusive testimony from a number of key participants. It uses a combination of personal testimony, evidential footage, dramatised reconstruction based on verbatim Inquest transcripts, and witness and expert interviews.

Many of the events of the day remain in dispute, and the film accurately portrays the differing points of view of the family and friends of Duggan; the police officers involved in the operation and those tasked with investigating it subsequently.

By setting out to present a 360-degree version of all of the main accounts of what happened on that day, this film asks the audience to make up their own minds about an event which continues to resonate more than five years after it occurred.

Gareth’s Best in Britain.

The grand final of Gareth Malone’s contest to find Britain’s most entertaining, undiscovered amateur choir. From the hundreds who applied, and the many groups Gareth auditioned across the country, just three are left standing. All that now stands between them and the title of series champion is one last challenge - one that comes with a twist. While the loss of their leader poses a problem for one choir, another group decamps to the country to focus all their energies on victory.

The choirs have just ten days to perfect their performances before they compete one final time, in front of a 2,000-strong crowd and a jury of musical experts, at London’s prestigious Central Hall Westminster. To emerge triumphant, the choirs must impress the jury, whose votes decide who will be crowned Gareth’s Best in Britain.

In Plain Sight ITV1, 21.00

Detective William Muncie is celebrating his 40th birthday at home with his friends and family when a birthday card is hand delivered. The card is signed Peter Thomas Manuel and takes Muncie back to 1946 when he saw Manuel arrested and imprisoned for the sexual assault of three women.

Nine years later Manuel is out of prison and back on Muncie’s patch with revenge on his mind. He attacks a young woman, Mary McLauchlan, and keeps her with him in an open field for most of the night before returning to his home.

Mary reports the attack and says she thinks she knows who did it. Manuel is brought to the station where she identifies him in a line up. Under questioning by Muncie, Manuel does not deny being in the field, but says he was not with Mary, he was poaching. Muncie warns his team that Manuel is a real threat to the woman of the community and they must do all they can to make sure they obtain a conviction. He is concerned about the length of time Mary was held in the field unsure what Manuel was up to. Then he hears that he is going to mount his own defence.

Manuel manages to secure a not proven verdict on the attack, saying he had been romantically involved with Mary and had been trying to tactfully end their affair that night which was why they had been together so long. Muncie promises a distraught Mary that he will not rest until Manuel is behind bars.

It is Christmas time and Muncie arrives home to another personal delivery, a Christmas card from Manuel.

He confides to Agnes, his wife, that he is afraid that Manuel won’t leave a witness next time.

On January 4th the brutally beaten body of a young woman, Anne Kneilands, is found on a local golf course.

Six Wives With Lucy Worsley BBC1, 21.00

In an ambitious and groundbreaking approach to drama and history, historian Lucy Worsley time travels back to the Tudor Court to witness some of the most dramatic moments in the lives of Henry VIII’s six wives.

Combining drama, written by Chloe Moss, with Lucy’s own contemporary historical comment, Lucy will move seamlessly from the present to the past, appearing as a range of silent servants: a maid, a midwife, a nursemaid.

Closely-knit and often related to each other, the Tudor court was made up of a small group of powerful families all vying for influence and power over each other. While it was a world run by men and the King had ultimate power, each Queen found their own unique methods of exerting influence. It is these women’s stories that Lucy wants to uncover, witness and explore, as well as offering a very new lens on Henry himself.

In this first episode, Lucy sees the early passion of young Henry VIII and his first wife, the Spanish princess Katherine of Aragon. Lucy follows Katherine through her emotional and physical struggles to give Henry the heir he so desperately needs to continue his own dynasty. After five failed pregnancies, four still births and one infant death and 16 years into their marriage, Katherine finally has a baby who lives - the only problem is that it’s a girl.

Henry’s eye wanders to the ladies at court - first to Mary Boleyn and then to her sister, the infamous Anne.

Lucy travels to Rome to read the love letters that Henry sent her, now kept at the Vatican.

Not wishing to be laid aside as her sister had been, Anne Boleyn spurns all Henry’s advances - unless he marries her. Henry needs the Pope to annul his marriage to Katherine but the diplomatic process to get this proves harder than he ever could have imagined.

Brand new series, Extraordinary Weddings follows the inspirational stories of six couples who, against all the odds and having faced some of life’s toughest challenges, are finally going to be tying the knot and saying ‘I do’.

Each episode follows the incredible journey of two couples, from the events that made them unite in the face of adversity, through to the moment their big day arrives and they get to marry their beloved.

In this first episode are two couples in their 20s, who both met as carefree students with their lives ahead of them, when their worlds were turned upside down.

Nick and Sophie, from Cambridgeshire, were in the middle of searching for a home together when Nick was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer. Thankfully Nick survived, but was left without his sight. Nevertheless, in light of their experience and remaining by his side every step of the way, Sophie accepted Nick’s marriage proposal.

The second couple, Carly and Nelly, from Newquay, were also searching for their first home together when, in a freak accident, Carly fell backwards off a wall and was left paralysed from the neck down.

However, not letting the challenge that lay ahead beat them, rugby player Nelly proposed to girlfriend Carly and the couple did all they could in preparation for the wedding day she had always dreamed of.

Extraordinary Weddings is a Raw TV production for ITV. Richard Bond and Tom Barry are Executive Producers. Hannah Berryman is director for episode 1.

Our Christmas event is on the 17th December, from 3-7pm, in the Plaza in Las Galletas. It will be a fun-filled afternoon for you and your beloved dogs.

Father Christmas has promised to make an appearance, and will visit the many children who support our events. There will be singing, dancing, children’s workshops, a puppy play area and fun and games for all. So it’s definitely a date for your diary, and if you would like to bring a tin of dog food

to donate, it would be greatly appreciated by our many four-legged friends.

K9 Refuge news

Rocco needs help ROCCO was found on the street by Vicky, one of our volunteers. She has been fostering him at her home, as he is quite timid and would

be overwhelmed and very unhappy in the K9 refuge.

He now desperately needs a loving and secure home. He is small, between 1-2 years old, and gets on well with other dogs.

He takes a little time to get to know new people, but, once acquainted, he is very friendly and loving.

What does a euro buy these days?

A coffee, if you’re lucky? A tin of beans? Half a newspaper? Well, ONLY one euro a month is what we are asking you to donate to our Teaming Account.

On the face of it, that’s not much, but a regular, small amount from lots of people adds up to a regular income for us.

This would solve many of our current financial problems.

It doesn’t matter what country you live in.

It’s international, and, don’t worry, it’s secure.

Gillian Banks collecting Xmas hampers for poor GILLIAN Banks Theatre School’s “Friends of Guaidyl School” is collecting food donations for the youngsters there at Christmas.

The dance school, from Rotherham, which has formed a “Los Amigos de Gillian Banks” association, is receiving help from El Medano’s Hesperia Language School, a collecting point in El Médano until 14th December.

The food collected is for Granadilla’s underprivileged families in the form of Christmas hampers.

You can all help by donating an item, preferably Canarian and long-life varieties, such as rice, flour, tins of vegetables or meat, etc.

This project is all about enabling those who live in difficult times in South Tenerife not to feel excluded from these special celebrations.

Guaidyl is a public

centre for the primary school network, involved in training, social integration and protection of minors in the pre-risk stage, or who have been declared at social risk.

Los Amigos de Gillian Banks seeks to help under-privileged children here in the South by raising funds to help with educational and vocational training.

And its superb dancers visit Tenerife every year on fund-raising missions.

The association also organises food collections for special occasions and is aided by the Hesperia Language School, a young establishment which is teaching Spanish to foreigners.

As a Canarian, supporting disadvantaged families concerns Carmen Jorge, the school’s Director. And when her students (also members of the association) talked about the project, she offered to help.

A SPANISH company is turning the country’s traditional wine industry blue, with some raising their eyebrows and others raising their glasses at Gïk Blue.

Spanish traditions hold wine-making in high esteem, and the country has created a vast wine industry.

But, says Gïk Blue cocreator Aritz López: “It was born for fun, to

shake things up and see what happens. We wanted to innovate and start a little revolution … and the wine industry looked like the perfect place to start.”

There was just one small problem: no one in the López circle of friends had any experience of wine-making.

So they recruited some help from the University of the Basque Country,

Undaunted, a team of chemical engineers spent two years helping them “merge nature and technology” to create a blue wine.

Gïk blends different varieties of red and white grapes with two organic pigments to turn it blue: anthocyanin, from

the red grape skin, and indigotine, an organic compound used commonly as a reddish-blue food dye.

The resulting flavour is enhanced with noncaloric sweeteners to create a cross between a wine, a wine-cooler and a cocktail-mixer, with a mellow, sweet, slightlysyrupy feel in the mouth.

Spain’s first restaurants to carry the product, said: “At first, people didn’t believe we were selling a blue wine. But when they tried it, they loved it - and they keep coming back for it!”

However, some have called Gïk blasphemous and a terrible invention; others liken it to an “anti-wine” spin-off, as Seville-based Puerto de Indias provided with its strawberry gin.

It was created after a failed attempt at making a strawberry liqueur with fresh strawberries, Puerto de Indias’ master distiller added the macerated berries to a new gin he was working on.

“In Spain, wine is so linked to culture,” said López. “It hasn’t changed for centuries.

This country prefers tradition instead of innovation, but Gïk is trying to change that. We are catering for normal people, who don’t need to know

thousands of rules to enjoy a glass.”

But from a longevity perspective, it’s hard to know whether Gïk is simply for this time and place – just a novelty set to run its course. Only time, or the powerful voices of the wine industry, will tell. Yet Gïk is already sold in 25 countries, with plans to expand to the US market next year.

Chad Walsh, sommelier at New York’s Agern Restaurant, said: “I haven’t tasted Gïk, thankfully, and although it may be ‘modern’, I think contemporary tastes tend to favour unadulterated, natural products.

“The trend these days is towards wines to which nothing is added or removed. I can confidently say this isn’t going to be on any serious wine list any time soon.

“But I wouldn’t be surprised if it ended up in a bodega fridge near you soon!”

I HATE selling products, and I loathe the feeling that some clients get in salons when they are forced into buying products they don’t need.

Most of us who live here would say that one of the main reasons we do so is the nice weather.

My advice is to always listen to your stylist, as they normally have your best hair interests at heart.

If I ask clients as to what shampoo or conditioner they use, it’s like a doctor enquiring about their lifestyles. I ask because your home products are important, and it’s my way of maintaining your hair between visits.

I often listen to clients telling me what they

use, and I’m aghast at what they think are the products which care for their hair.

The major, home haircare companies mass produce their products, and sometimes don’t care what they contain.

Look at the ingredients on the back of your favourites. How many times do you see the word sodium, or sodio?

Sometimes five or six times.

This is pure salt in different forms, used to

thicken the shampoo.

Also, take a look at your conditioner.

Does it say Panthenol?

This is pure liquid plastic to coat your hair to make it “feel” smoother.

It also covers the scalp, making it feel itchy. So we aren’t in the business of pushing you to buy expensive products. We want you to see the difference that using quality haircare products can make to your hair.

All I want for Christmas…

Santa’s going to be a busy guy this year, as usual.

And, no more so than in the fashion stakes, where clothing, jewellery and shoes are big sellers at this festive time. If you’re planning on picking gifts this Christmas, then go for ones that last longer than most.

Gift vouchers from your favourite stores may seem unimaginative to some, but at least the recipients can buy what they want. They can even be saved until the January sales after

Reyes, so you get even more for your money.

If you’re buying for your partners, then fish around for ideas.

Look at what they pick up in the stores, and get them to scan the internet, to give you ideas as to what they really want.

Giving gifts of fashion items is difficult, but it

is more rewarding than, say, boxes of chocolates or smellies. Make sure you keep all receipts, too, for any returns, and don’t pull off any tags, or you may not be able to change them, or get a refund.

Choose gifts that are not high fashion. Stick to classics that will last longer, and never buy what you would wear.

Think of the people and their tastes, and your fashion gifts will be more appreciated.

Just don’t go mad.

After all, it’s the thought that counts, not the label hanging off it. Happy Christmas shopping!

However, Christmas is, pretty much, the only time of year when the lovely warmth and sunshine isn’t great, because it’s just not, well, Christmassy!

There are two ways to approach this.

Go for the beachand-barbecue way of thinking, which is the complete opposite to a Christmas in the UK, just because you can!

Make sure you send home lots of gloating photos to the rest of the family, boasting about the warm temperatures, while secretly feeling a bit envious of that cold, crisp, wintry weather, even if just for the day.

Alternatively, recreate your UK Christmas here, including the turkey, the tree, and all the Christmas films.

Remind yourself that a white Christmas is very rare in the UK, and there is more likelihood of rain and slush, instead of a beautiful white expanse of snow, as seen in the films.

If you are in the “recreate” camp, there are lots of things you can do to make your home feel more festive, to get you into the Christmas spirit.

If you want a tree, you’ll be able to find lots of artificial versions.

Make sure you have a family row as to whether you are going for the designer look of picking up one or two toning colours for the lights and decorations, or going for the full-on “every-colour-you-canthink-of” mix-up.

Also, be sure to follow that other tradition where one person does

all the preparation, buying and wrapping the presents, and cooking all the food, only for someone else to take all the credit when they carve the turkey!

On a serious note, use fairy lights, and introduce deep, festive colours such as reds, greens and golds to make the house look cosy and welcoming, And, perhaps, splash out on a few festive cushions or throws to complete the look.

These items are very inexpensive, but will make all the difference, and make a marked change to your room for the rest of the year.

Create a festive welcome at the entrance to your home to set the tone; maybe some fairy lights round a mirror, or some cinnamon-andorange scented candles in shiny dishes of bronze and gold.

Don’t go over the top, though, or you might get claustrophobic!

Sleep, for a longer life!

By Val Sainsbury MOST of us feel rough when we haven’t had enough sleep, but it isn’t just our moods that can suffer!

Our risk of death can increase, and our inability to work to our full potential, when exhausted, is costing the UK economy about £40bn each year, which equates to almost 2% of the country’s Gross Domestic Product.

Scientists have evaluated the economic cost of poor sleep in the UK, as well as in the US,

Canada, Germany and Japan.

People of any age who slept less than an average of six hours a night were 13% more likely to die than those sleeping between

seven and nine hours.

Sleeping between seven and nine hours a night was described as a “healthy, daily sleep range” in the report, entitled Why Sleep Matters - The Economic

Costs Of Insufficient Sleep.

Head researcher Dr Marco Hafner, from the research organisation RAND Europe, said: “Our study shows that the effects from a lack

of sleep are massive.

“Sleep deprivation not only influences an individual’s health and well-being, but it has a significant impact on a nation’s economy, with lower productivity levels and a higher mortality risk among workers.”

People who sleep less than six hours a night are 13% more likely to die, and Dr Hafner added: “Improving individual sleep habits and duration has huge implications, with our research showing that simple changes can make a big difference.

“For example, if those who sleep under six hours a night increase their sleep to between six and seven hours a night, this could add £24bn to the UK economy.”

The scientists reviewed available research evidence on

links between sleep, health, mortality and productivity, and collected survey data on sleep duration. They also ran computer models to come up with their findings.

Of all the countries studied, the US experienced the biggest financial burden, up to £329bn, through insufficient sleep.

It also suffered the most working days lost, 1.2 million, as a result of sleep deprivation.

Japan lost up to £110bn and 600,000 working days, and Germany up to £48bn and just over 200,000 working days.

A poll of 2,000 British adults, published earlier this year by the Royal Society for Public Health, found that people in the UK slept an average of 6.8 hours.

Second-hand-car guarantees

WHEN you buy a second-hand car, be it from an individual or a car dealer, you are automatically given a type of guarantee.

There are different versions, depending on the seller and/or the buyer, and the main type is known as a legal guarantee.

And, over the next few issues, I will explain the differences, be they legal or commercial.

Firstly, let’s start by explaining what the law considers to be consumers. They are described as being individuals who participate in the purchase, with no relation to their commercial activity, employment or profession.

In other words, the purchase is made for their own personal use.

This classification also applies to charities, because they are nonprofit organisations.

If the purchase is made for business purposes, either as an individual

or a registered company, the purchaser is no longer considered to be a consumer.

The law considers a seller to be a company or individual, who buys and sells cars as his/ her main business. The guarantee law is not applicable to companies or individuals whose main business is something else, but who may, from time to time, sell their own vehicles.

Types of guarantee A legal guarantee is defined as the obligatory one, regulated by a royal legislative decree which is offered by a seller, dedicated to the sale-purchase of vehicles, be they new or second-hand, to an enduser/consumer. The legal guarantee, a combination of rights the law grants the consumer, is absolutely firm: both parties cannot agree to renounce the guarantee.

A commercial guarantee is defined as the combination of additional benefits given by the seller to the buyer, which come on top of the legal guarantee.

This type of guarantee is given at the seller’s discretion and covers what he/she deems appropriate.

A hidden-defects guarantee is defined as the

warranty offered by the seller against defects that the seller, be it a company or an individual, knew were present on the vehicle at the time of sale, which weren’t clearly explained and accepted at the time.

Is the “legal guarantee” law applicable in cases of a commission-based or broker sale?

In a broker sale, the consumer asks a seller to obtain on his/ her behalf a specific vehicle. Said “broker” then sells the vehicle to the consumer. The law considers it to be a sale

between a seller and a consumer, so the legal guarantee is applied.

As for a commissionbased sale, a consumer hands his personal vehicle to a car-sales company to sell it on his behalf. The sale is considered to be between individuals, so the legal guarantee is not applicable because the seller is simply collecting a commission.

But the seller must be clear with the purchaser at the time of sale that the vehicle is being sold on a commission basis. Yet a hidden-

defects guarantee still applies between both consumers.

How long is the guarantee?

When the buyer is a business and the seller is a car-sales company no legal guarantee is offered. But the hiddendefects guarantee is applicable and a claim must be made within six months.

When the buyer is a carsales company, a legal guarantee, again, isn’t offered. But the hiddendefects guarantee is still applicable, although the claim must be made

inside 30 days. If the buyer and seller are both individuals, the only applicable guarantee is the hidden-defects variety, and the claim must be made within six months.

When the buyer is a consumer and the seller is a car-sales company, a legal guarantee is obligatory. The validity is two years on new vehicles and one year on second-hand vehicles.

WE all have our favourite weather presenters, and it’s not usually their fault if things go wrong!

All they need to do is keep smiling and talk the talk, because modern technology is nearly always to blame, when predicted winds turn out to be a hurricane!

And, if Oasis Fm DJ Jodie Bryant’s disastrous performance is anything to go by, she won’t be doing

the BBC’s award-winning weathergirl, Carol Kirkwood, out of a job any time soon!

“When I was a DJ on student radio at u n i v e r s i t y, I was asked to read the weather forecast,” explained Jodie. “I was given all the details, but I got really confused.”

The end result was that she totally baffled the

Don’t mention the weather! listeners by announcing that every single type of weather was on its way, all at the same time - and all in the same sentence!

Sunny, cold, cloudy, dry, wet: you name it, Jodie included it.

“I was told to say that it was sunny,” she said, “but when I looked out of the window it wasn’t. It was raining.

That confused me even more!”

A friend, who had heard all this going on, pleaded with her never to read the weather again!

“And I’ve never done it since,” said Jodie, with a smile.

The 26-year-old was born in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and grew up in nearby Hemsworth.

“Yorkshire people are the best!” she said.

After taking her GCSEs, she studied Performing Arts at college.

“I was a terrible actress,” she recalled.

“I enjoyed it, but I just wasn’t very good at it.

I didn’t realise how bad I was!”

on to study Film and Media at the University of Sunderland. Her first year was spent studying drama, but she didn’t enjoy it. She then focused on Media, and concentrated on Radio studies in her final year, graduating at 21.

Jodie said: “I was part of a breakfast show with two guys on student radio, which was broadcast across Sunderland, and I had a solo slot as well.

“I moved to Tenerife in June 2015. It was a s p u r- o f- t h e - m o m e n t decision. I’d had two family holidays here as a child, but hadn’t been over here since.

“I came because it’s an all-year-round place, with guaranteed sun all the time, and I’ve never looked back.”

She started at Oasis Fm in August, and is on air on Saturdays and Sundays, from 3-6pm.

In addition, Jodie is the assistant PR manager at the Joyce Club, in Las Americas.

“I love it,” she said. “I get to meet new people, and I’ve worked with my colleagues for a long time. It’s like a little family.”

Her Dad, Richard, came to visit a few weeks ago. “He met all my friends, and

saw where I worked,” she said, proudly. “He was pleased to see how happy I was out here.

“My Mum, Sharon, had to work, so she couldn’t come.” Jodie also has two brothers, Daniel and Ashley, back in the UK. “I miss my friends and family most of all, especially when I see someone from home, and then they go back.

“I know I have a future out here, but I miss those Saturday nights when I’d watch rubbish telly, eating junk food with family and friends.

Home will always be home.”

Jodie added: “I work six nights a week at Joyce’s, starting at 8pm, and, often, I don’t finish until about 3am.

“But it’s a lifestyle I’ve chosen, and the benefits out here definitely outweigh those in the UK.” Working on radio has always been Jodie’s goal.

“When Oasis welcomed me, I was very happy. I’m so grateful that they gave me the opportunity.

“For the moment, I’m content just to bob along, but I want to progress with my radio work on Oasis.

She admitted: “I am a bit nervous on air, but in an excited kind of way. I think that’s a good thing,

because you always try harder.

“Sometimes, when I come into the studio for my show, I sit and think that I’ve got nothing to say. It’s weird, because as soon as the first song kicks in, it’s like a switch going on. It all just happens, and I keep finding things to talk about.

“That’s the magic of radio! I love the freedom I have here on Oasis. When I was on student radio there were certain regulations, and I wasn’t allowed to pick the music I liked. But here, I can play and talk about whatever I want.

“Normal” work holds no interest for Jodie.

“I’m not bored in Tenerife yet!” she said.

“I’m tired, but not bored! I really enjoy both my jobs, because no two days are the same.

“I like how relaxing it is here, living in an environment where it’s always sunny. You can get up and spend the day at the beach. It’s an incredible place to live.

Finally, she said: “I’ve a great set of friends here who are like family to me. And, with having everyone back in the UK, I’ve definitely got the best of both worlds!”

The peace-loving chatterbox Jodie knows she comes across as being confident, but she reveals: “Actually, I’m quite a shy person. Beyonce always says that she has a stage presence, and, when I’m on air, I feel that I’ve got a radio persona.

“Having an invisible audience can be quite nice, because I’m more relaxed. I know that people aren’t watching me, so I can have a laugh.

“And I like to think that as long as I’m laughing, the audience will be laughing as well.”

She adds: “When I’m working I’m always talking, so I really enjoy peace when I have it.”

Happy Birthday Robot!

THIS is a very significant month for Carl Pattison, owner of Robot Hair and Beauty salon, in Los Cristianos.

Yesterday (Thursday) saw him celebrate the salon’s 10th anniversary ... and his 50th birthday is next week’s major event!

And what better way than to invite clients and friends to the salon for an informal get-together. “I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me during the last 10 years,” he said.

“I don’t like big celebrations or anything lavish. It was just something simple, but we had to mark the occasion because 10 years is a long time!”

Born in the Yorkshire city of Hull, Carl has been hairdressing for 36 years. When he was 10, he moved with his family to Scarborough, another part of the county.

For two weeks, when he was 14, he undertook work experience in a local hairdressing salon.

But he only went there because the place he was supposed to go cancelled at the last minute.

He had always loved all things arty, and had

planned to go elsewhere for his fortnight’s work.

But he ended up at the hairdressers, because he was left with no other option.

“I thought that at least I’d be warm!” he recalled, but he ended up really loving it. “After a week, the owner wanted me to be his next junior when I reached 16, which was two years away,” he said.

“He told me I could work there until then, so I had to get sick notes from my Mum, and didn’t always go to school. By the time I left at 16, I’d already been hairdressing for two years!

“I just knew then that it was what I wanted to do. I never even went back to school to get my exam results.”

“And when I was 16, my Mum actually confided in me that she used to be a hairdresser, but she hadn’t wanted to influence me.”

Carl first visited Tenerife on a winter holiday. “I was on my own, but met my then partner here,” he said.

“We went back to the UK together for five years, but then bought a house here and came over to live.

“We arrived on 17th September 2006, and opened the salon six weeks later, on 1st December.

“Most of the time I am happy in my work, but

“And it helps me to disconnect when I get out of the salon, because I don’t have a lot of free time.”

“It’s very difficult to persuade some clients to do something with their hair which is a bit off-the-wall. But when I’ve got their confidence and they really trust me, I get more of a free rein.”

But because of the beach life and culture here, he doesn’t feel as though he’s being pushed to the limit, as he was in England.

“I’m not the world’s most intelligent person with numbers and figures,” he admitted.

“But I’ve got a talent in my fingers which I love

to show people, and to use.

“It is said that our hair is the third thing people notice, after our eyes and teeth. But, being a hairdresser, it’s the first thing I look at!

“Yet the job I’ve always craved, from the age of 14, is window-dressing and design, and I can

make a pile of rubbish look a million dollars.

“But it would have meant leaving Scarborough and going to London. At the time, though, for family reasons, I just couldn’t go.”

For all that, his passion is hairdressing, and it isn’t the only string to his creative bow.

Unfortunately, though, he doesn’t always get the opportunity to demonstrate his other skills.

“Unless it’s Christmas, when I do the decorations,” he said. “A lot of people have filled up when they’ve seen the ones in the salon.

“Three of us spent a total of 11 hours putting them up, which didn’t include all the preparation. I had to hire a truck to bring everything here, but at least they will be up until after Reyes.”

Take it from me, they certainly are stunning, and would definitely give Christmas displays in Harrods and Selfridges a run for their money!

While several other salons in the vicinity have had to close down, Robot has survived.

“We opened during the recession,” said Carl, proudly, “so to stay afloat during that time was better than anything I could have done in the UK.” Carl appreciates the people he has around him, comprising hair stylist Lynsey, beautician Mel, assistant receptionist Lynne and George the masseur.

They function really well as a team, so here’s to Robot’s next 10 years!

Rocking Rebels on song!

THERE was a break in league action this week as it was the second round of the PJ Electrical & Building Services Cup, and the first round of the same sponsors’ Plate competition.

In the opening Cup round there were no significant giant-killings, but round two provided one of the biggest upsets league history as First Division Tenerife Hammers A were beaten by Second Division newcomers Palms Rebels.

It has been a strange season for Hammers A because they have struggled to get a settled side. But that’s not to take anything away from the Rebels, who played their best pool of the season.

The lower-tier side took a few early frames, which gave them confidence. And with this advantage, they never looked back, Hammers’ heads dropped, and, try as they might, they couldn’t respond. Once the seventh frame was won, Palms Rebels celebrated as though they had won the Cup. And rightly so!

Terrace Bantams just

scraped a point in the league last week against Gaffers B. But, as the two sides locked horns this time in the Cup, Bantams had the upper hand.

The first frames were shared, as is often the case, but Bantams upped their game in the second session and took all four frames to lead 6-2.

At this point, they took their foot off the gas and allowed Gaffers B to get two quick frames. But Con then won his game and the Bantams took their place in the quarter-finals.

The Crown, who are having a strong season in Division Two, fancied an upset against Palms Elite. But the away side made a blistering start.

Crown were all at sea as their opponents took a 6-1 lead, leaving the home team an uphill task.

But they rallied and stunned Palms Elite by getting the score back to 6-5 and looked to force a decider.

In the final frame, it was Joel against Graeme, but, try as he might, Joel couldn’t get his game going and Graeme stood firm, taking the frame and the win for Palms Elite.

Rewind A faced a tough task as they hosted Gaffers A, who are looking for a league and

Mucker then beat Brian to restore Bluebell’s lead, only for Roy to level again, beating Archie. This meant a play-off for Wayne and Mucker. In the end, it was a match-winning performance from Wayne, who left his opponent with seven balls on the table - and Picasso’s A looking a dark horse for this title.

Dreamers A patched a side together for their home game against Splash Bar in another clash which could have produced a shock.

It was tight over the opening frames, but, in the second session, Dreamers opened up a slender lead, Splash needed a fightback, but, unfortunately, it never materialised as Steve, Gave and Mark T took three frames in a row to see Dreamers A safely through.

Bluebell B, who have been playing well, were relishing a tie against Exiles B and looked in control when they took the opening two frames.

However, over the next six frames, the lead was traded several times, and, going into the last session, it was nicely balanced at 4-4.

Craig earned the man of the match award for Bluebell B with three wins!

There was one catchup match in the Direct Telecom First Division, and it proved to be a close contest. Treehouse A have had the better of things when facing Palms A over the last few seasons. But that run was halted.

The contest began with a battle of the bookies. It was a tight affair and Scott, from Treehouse, edged past Mark. But Palms A came back, taking the next three frames to lead after the first set,

only for Treehouse to level with victories in frames five and six.

With second place on offer for Palms if they could win, they roared back in front. Roscoe and Simon sunk vital blacks and they were back in front at 5-3.

Treehouse captain Mark got one back before a bookie rematch, and this time there was only one winner. Mark made a smooth start, potting ball after ball, and, with a memorable seven-baller in the offing, he took a chance on the black.

It was an outrageous effort and the pub erupted as it nestled in the middle pocket!

The win will be remembered for a long time!

That success set up Palms, who took the one frame they required to claim all three points, and move to second in the table.

Capital darts from London!

THE PDC World Championship darts finals have been based in London for the past few years, and a Phoenix Bar player fired in a leg that wouldn't look out of place at the Ally Pally, come 15th December.

In the very first leg at Boothen, London fired in a 15-darter, culminating in a 160 check-out. He followed that up in the trebles with a 118 finish to seal a 7-1 victory. Still rolling back the years!

Of course, London's team-mates helped him a little, with Pod's fourth 180, and a seventh maximum from Mitch, including a 128 finish.

But who will be top at Christmas? Pas O Nadas A, looking good for that honour, had

to battle all the way to the last rubber to gain the win at Exiles, who had Jamie notching his third maximum.

Scruffy Macs hold second place after putting seven past the Playboys, while The Pub took the last point to tie with Spear Chuckers.

Tavern look certain to top Division 2 come the festive break, after enjoying their 16th win of the campaign at home against Legends. But Picassos, who might have already had too much cheer, managed just a draw with Rood and now have Palms Pool Bar breathing down their necks, thanks to their 6-2 win over the Playgirls.

Waterfall put in a fine performance to beat local rivals Emerald Lounge and are now just two points behind them in fifth spot.

Hamilton ups the tempo LEWIS Hamilton is adamant he did nothing wrong, or unfair, by slowing down the pace to enable rivals to close in on Mercedes team-mate Nico Rosberg during last Sunday’s tense Formula One title decider in Abu Dhabi.

The defending champion, bidding for hat-trick of F1 titles and comfortably ahead, was asked repeatedly by his team to increase his pace during the closing stages of the race, particularly when

Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was closing in on fresher tyres.

But Hamilton, who needed Rosberg to miss the podium in order to pinch the title, ignored instructions, making a far more interesting race than it otherwise would have been.

As expected, Mercedes enjoyed another onetwo, with Hamilton winning his 10th Grands Prix of the season, and 51st in all.

And he insisted: “I don’t think I did anything dangerous today, or unfair. We’re fighting for a world championship, I was in the lead, so I control the pace. That’s the rules.

“For me I’m in the position where I’ve had a lot of points

lost during the season (mechanical failures), so I’m out there fighting, and I generally never try to do anything to harm the team.

“But we had already won the constructors’ championship, so it was down to me and Nico. but the team still felt they needed to interfere.”

A puzzled Hamilton, who lost his title by just seven points, added: “I don’t know why they didn’t just let us race.

I knew, being in the lead, that I was losing the championship, but there was never a moment I felt I was going to lose the race.

“I don’t really have much to say to them [his team bosses] to be honest. There was

never a moment I felt I was at risk.” Despite his frustrations, Hamilton said that Rosberg’s triumph - rather than their on-track fight should have been the main talking point.

“We shouldn’t let it overshadow the fact Nico is champion,” he added. “It’s an amazing feeling to win the world championship.

But I still feel good. I did everything I could this year, especially in the final races.

“But Nico had a clean year without any real issues, to be honest; that’s why we sit in these positions.

“He did a fantastic job so congratulations, and I look forward to fighting with him next year.”

Our Captain Fantastic!

THERE’S no spinach, no gamma rays or spandex costume required: Jesus Manuel Santana simply pulls on a CD Tenerife shirt and, as Suso, he becomes a super hero.

He’s now 31, but the former Hearts player came up trumps when his team went behind after five minutes at Lugo.

The La Laguna-born forward is worshipped by the fans because he

And, shortly after that opening goal, he went on one of his trademark runs at the defence, forcing a way past his marker, who pulled him down to stop him in the penalty area.

The skipper duly converted the spotkick, and it was gameon. But Lugo held firm for the remainder of the half, despite inform Tenerife forwards Amath and Cristo ripping into them.

Then, with 66 minutes played, a strong Amath

run down the middle of the pitch opened up the home side.

A ball to Cristo was passed neatly out to Suso, who came in from the wing to fire his second goal, from an acute angle.

Still the little terrier wasn’t finished.

Unleashed again, he made light work of Lugo’s captain and fired a fierce shot goalwards.

The keeper could only parry the ball, and Aaron tapped it into the net for his first goal in three years.

There were plenty of

other pluses from the win. Defensive prospect Jorge Saenz was given a rare run-out from the subs’ bench in place of Raul Camara after 54 minutes. And another

home-grown youth player, Bolaños, made his senior debut in the final minutes. Suddenly, Tenerife have a winning formula, despite having key players out injured.

Huesca are the visitors to Santa Cruz on Sunday (5pm kick-off) in a clash which should attract Tenerife’s biggest crowd of the season.

Basketball

A last-gasp repeat NEVER write off Iberostar Tenerife. Just a few short days after a late, late European win in Avelino, they shaved it even closer to snatch a 73-72 league victory at Baskonia.

This time the hero, and man of the match, was Javier Beiran, who helped the ball through the hoop as the last seconds ticked away.

The teams matched each other through the encounter, and were level going into the final quarter.

Davin White, who continued his hot streak with 17 points, was well-supported

by Beiran and Aaron Doornekamp, on 10 points.

This latest triumph puts Tenerife back up to second place in the Liga Endesa.

And their European League game, at home, was a lot easier - a 73-59 win over Mega Leks of Serbia to carry them to top spot in Group D. Tenerife gave valuable court time to fringe players and still strolled to victory. The visitors’ only glory came by taking the third quarter 25-20, but the yellows closed the show with a whopping 19-9 final

quarter.

Tim Abramaitis led the scoring on 21 points, with Georgios Bogris adding 14 points.

There was an emotional farewell for Canadian Carl English, who was brought in for a second spell with the La Laguna team to cover for injuries early in the season. But the club’s current clean clean bill of health on the bench means he is now moving on.

The 35-year-old, who played a huge part in keeping the wins coming, will have no trouble adding another destination to his widespread travels.

Nico Richotti, captain and longest-serving player, is to encourage Tenerife youngsters to lead a healthy lifestyle.

The guard has been recruited as an ambassador for the Government’s Isla Activa programme.

It’s too little, too late

KEEPER Petar won’t forget his first game for CD Marino because he was caught cold, rooted to the spot, as Yaiza’s Victor lobbed the ball over him from deep down the field after two minutes.

Marino were always chasing the game after that, and they didn’t help themselves by playing the same kickand-rush style as their visitors for the most part.

Marino had an even earlier chance to steal a march. Fran Delgado hit a long shot from the left over the bar with the referee’s whistle barely dry from starting the game.

Petar, standing in for injured Cicovic, had another scare a few minutes later when his casual ball out went straight to Yunes, who didn´t react quickly enough to increase the lead.

put Marino level after 12 minutes. He sprayed the ball out to Fran, who attacked the defence before passing to Kevin, who finished the smooth move.

That should have rebooted the game, but

Marino just couldn’t convert their best chances, Lolo’s freekick beating the twoman wall but not the keeper.

The Lanzarote visitors played a physical game and hoofed the

ball forward whenever possible for players to chase.

Marino’s success this season has been based on good, creative play.

But they forgot that and joined the long-ball route. Kevin Castro was isolated on the left and Facu and Alberto made little impact in front of goal.

The second half opened with Petar making a good save to deny Yaiza, who followed up with a header wide from a corner and were looking most likely to score.

Their pressure paid off as Rami burst through the home defence and buried the ball to regain the lead. Marino needed

a change of tactics, and on came big forwards Adan and Amed for Facu and Alberto.

Kevin moved inside and the shape looked a lot better. Amed was winning the ball deep and shrugging off his markers to create openings. Adan, who had a penalty appeal turned down, was also the victim of some harsh offside calls.

With nearly 20 minutes to go, Yaiza were reduced to 10 men as Victor departed with a red card. Marino upped the tempo with Adan and Amed beating the defence, only to find the keeper alert.

Another home sub,

Akshi, nearly beat him with a low shot, and Coly fired past the post with a header.

The equaliser just wouldn’t come,despite the Yaiza keeper and his defender, Ignacio, arguing with each other constantly, which was further encouragement for Marino.

A late siege saw Adan put the ball in the net, but the ref’s offside call was correct this time.

Akshi came tantalisingly close with a header from a Delgado cross, but the whistle condemned Marino to their first home defeat of the season, bumping them down to sixth place.

Women’s football

Ladies’ triple challenge AFTER a twoweek football break, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife launch themselves into their toughest run of Premier division games so far.

Tomorrow (Saturday), they travel to fourthplaced Valencia, and on Thursday, a public holiday, they entertain Atletico Madrid, who are in second spot.

Next Sunday (11th Dec), they are on the road again, this time at third-placed Levante.

The trio of games will have a big bearing on

the girls’ chances of playing in the European League next season.

They are fifth right now.

Home crowds have been building well this season at their El Medano ground, and they will be hoping to push the 1,000 mark for Thursday’s holiday clash, at noon.
