Firm’s alleged ‘corruption’ Continued from Front The case refers back to alleged double payments for work carried out between 2007 and 2011. Mr Concepción has just begun a new five-year term as President of Spain’s Second Division club CD Tenerife, adding to his 10-year run, following a resounding victory by shareholders. The La Palma-born businessman made his name with a road-
building company on his native island, before moving to Tenerife and expanding his empire. Mr Concepción formed the SOAC group, and added construction, transport and sport to his portfolio. He also headed a consortium which purchased Islas Airways in 2007. But in recent years his empire has shrunk, with that company losing its operating licence
after running into financial difficulties. A Santa Cruz court is about to start taking statements on the roads’ case after a six-month delay, searching for an expert, independent advisor on the relevant financial contracts in the road construction industry. Doubts about the Trayesa accounts travelled down a chain of authorities,
Desalination plant a big benefit to South
overseeing several big projects which included the Tres de Mayo road tunnel, by the main Santa Cruz bus station, and maintenance of the El Guincho tunnel going into Guarachico. The particular work that raised eyebrows was an agreement for the monitoring and maintenance of a stretch of the TF1 motorway. The Prosecutor’s
Office was alerted in 2014 by a Tenerife government report, suggesting Trayesa hadn’t suspended its work agreement, as required by law, and that a second payment of 414,479.02 euros was received by the company. After several delays, it appears that, legally, the court is concerned enough to consider there is a case to answer.
Bomb-scare plane given the all-clear
SOUTH Tenerife’s first major desalination and sea-water treatment plant was opened Wednesday on Granadilla de Abona’s industrial estate.
And, apart from pleasing more than 60,000 residents, it will be of huge benefit to farmers, who have suffered water shortages for years. The installation, near the new port, fast taking shape beyond the airport, and El Medano, is one of the most expensive hydraulic investments on the island. It has cost some 20m euros, financed by the European Union and Canarian Government funds. It was first mooted more than five years ago, and has been operating in test mode for the last few months. The following areas will be availing themselves of the fresher water: Las Listadas, Abades, El Porís, San Isidro, El Médano, Amarilla Golf, Golf del Sur, Los Abrigos, Granadilla, San Miguel, Arico and Arona. Initially, the plant will treat up to 14,000cu/m of water daily, increasing to 21,000cu/m - and doubling
that total in the future, according to forecasts by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water. Desalination on the island accounts for 14% of the water consumed, the remainder coming from underground galleries and wells. In theory, at least, injecting 14,000 cubic metres per day into the network will result in water costing less for residents. Narvay Quintero, the ALFW Minister, said: “The consumption quality will be optimum, as it will be treated
with the latest technology.” He added: “It will mean reducing pressure on wells and galleries, and, above all, should solve the historical problem faced by farmers in the South, who have endured a shortage of water for decades.” It is the third, publiclyowned desalination plant operating on the island, the others sited on the Adeje and Arona border, and in Santa Cruz. A fourth station is at an advanced stage of development at Fonsalia, on the west coast.
THE pilot of a Thomas Cook Airlines Airbus, concerned about an unaccounted piece of luggage on board, made an emergency landing at Tenerife South on Wednesday. After taking off from Cape Verde’s Amílcar Cabral airport on Sal for a flight to Gatwick, he requested permission to land at around 6pm because of his suspicions. Spanish bomb-disposal crews with sniffer dogs were primed, and, as passengers were evacuated to a holding lounge, a thorough search of the aircraft was made, including all luggage. Fortunately, the “rogue” suitcase was found and the bomb-disposal units were satisfied there was no danger.
Yet passengers on the Airbus A321 complained that Cape Verde security had not spotted the extra luggage being loaded. They also felt they had spent several hours in the air before landing in Tenerife, rather than returning to Cape Verde to check out the possible danger. The flight eventually arrived at Gatwick early yesterday (Thursday) morning, several hours behind schedule. A Tenerife South airport official confirmed the pilot of flight MT1157 had asked to land after a “suspicious package” had been detected in the luggage hold. It was thought to have belonged to a passenger who failed to board the flight.

Music and dance in Los Cristianos
FREE or extremely low-priced - that’s the pre-Christmas December line-up at the Auditorio Infanta Leonor, attached to the Cultural Centre by the main Los Cristianos crossroads.
Capital call-out for the big boys POP over and see us some time. That will be the invitation from Santa Cruz to London and Manchester next year as Tenerife’s capital seeks to raise its profile as a major tourist city.
Its development group, Sociedad de Desarrollo, which has a 3m-euro budget to promote Santa Cruz over a range of mediums, is keen to enhance the city’s continuing flowering as it opens up to the sea. In recent years, the Via Litoral front-line has seen major changes, with the underground road tunnel
clearing the way for direct access to Plaza de España and the heart of the city, from the busy port. In 2017, the work will near its conclusion, opening up 18,400sq/m of sea-facing space for sport, live entertainment, or just relaxing in the shade of the new trees, which are being added to create diverse spaces.
There are other ambitious plans to expand tourist attractions, while special, historical route tours around Santa Cruz will highlight the city’s culture. Also, increased transport links to La Laguna will offer visitors plenty of new horizons, photo opportunities, and forever memories to take home with them.
Nursing-home growth to continue next year WORK on expanding San Miguel’s nursing home and day carecentre, La Alborada, will restart in 2017 after a nine-year gap!
The Cabildo has stepped in with a 98,656-euro grant which will, ultimately, enable the centre to operate 24 hours a day. It now accommodates 25 people and opens from 9ampm. And the grant will help fulfil a major need within the San Miguel community. The lack of available rooms, along with the ageing population here in the South, has heightened the problem throughout the region, forcing the Cabildo to accelerate expansion work and the construction
of new facilities. Building work will begin by the middle of next year to complete the residential home,
which includes equipping the kitchen to bring it up to industrial standards, carpentry and electrical
work, a drinking-water tank and installing banisters. And the centre should be open 24 hours a day in early 2018. San Miguel Mayor Arturo González, and Social Services Councillor Nuria Marrero, said in a joint statement: “Being able to complete the work on the nursing home is great news for the municipality. “This was a priority for us because it was a social problem, and because there are not enough rooms available in nursing homes in the South.” La Alborada nursing home takes care of people over 60, or younger, with physical, mental and social problems. And the day-care centre aims to improve the welfare and quality of life of its users.
The modern theatre has seating for 800 people, a large stage and a first-rate sound system. For free shows, it is advisable to arrive in good time. But you can pre-book at the Auditorium box office for the other events. Rough going for migrants A TOTAL of 92 migrants were rescued in rough seas during a “complicated” operation last Saturday, some 50 miles off the southern coast of Spain.
The group included three women and at least two children, one a boy who was taken to hospital. The migrants, comprising 29 Algerians and a further 63 from sub-Saharan Africa, were taken to Malaga port. A further 22 migrants were caught hiding in a lorry as it tried to enter Melilla the same day.

All roads lead to success TRANSPORT Minister Ornella Chacon has explained the delays to Tenerife road improvements, and reassures the Cabildo that she is not blocking the projects. In fact, she guarantees that all roadworks scheduled will be completed in 2017.
How will the 2017 improvements’ budget benefit Tenerife? The budgets are destined to finish the roads requiring improvements in Tenerife, and we guarantee that all these roadworks scheduled will be completed next year. We feel this is very positive because some of the work has been delayed five or years. When the state budget is approved, we will have more funds, and there is a long list of projects to be done, including the By Colin Kirby SOME call it living rough, while others view it as communing with nature. Either way, 62 people have been denounced by the authorities for having illegal dwellings on the protected area between Adeje’s La Caleta and El Puertito. There is a popular walk up the sandstone cliff at the original, fishingvillage end of La Caleta, through the folds of the hills, where barrancos carve their way down to the secluded beaches of Playa Diego Hernandez and Playa Los Morteros. The makeshift homes are constructed from natural materials, which abound in the area and blend in with the landscape. However, signs point out that it is protected as an area of scientific interest, because of the rare flora and fauna growing there. The Local Police and Guardia Civil have identified 85 illegal “homes”, although 62 have so far been denounced. In 2010, a major cleanup operation took place, with large amounts of
Las Chafiras-Oroteanda link, which will go to tender in 2017. What other road constructions are pending completion We are proud that this year, the Via Litoral of Santa Cruz was completed. And in the South, the motorway extension from Adeje to Santiago del Teide was also completed. This coming year, we will finish the junction from Guia de Isora to the
motorway. There is only 100,000 euros budgeted for the Las Chafiras junction. How will you spend this money? With Las Chafiras, we want to start the expropriation file. I know there is a lot of impatience when it comes to Tenerife roads, but that does remove the procedures we have to follow. We trust that
Illegal-home dwellers face big shut-out
rubbish removed. It is difficult to pin this on one section because not all walkers passing through take their rubbish away with them. When I did the walk earlier this year, the homes seemed clean and self-contained, but there is a small bar set up on one of the beaches for those nimble enough to scramble down. And a few dwellers had left pots for donations near small statues on rock shelves.
There is no direct access for vehicles, and the nearest shops are quite a hike away. I saw signs of fishing and rainwater collection at various points. But it must be quite a bleak place in the colder and wetter weather. El Puertito has itself maintained an uneasy balance between its popularity as a beautiful, unspoiled cove, and a large influx of visitors, especially during holidays and weekends.
the state budget will inject more funds into this project. What differences are
there between Tenerife r o a d s and those on other Islands? I don’t want to talk about differences but needs, and there absolutely are needs in all the Islands. Our roads have been left behind because the state has left us with 700m euros less since 2012.
Tenerife has two major mobility problems which must be solved as soon as possible. But the answer to these problems requires time. Are these excuses not to finish Tenerife roads? What sense would it make if I did that? A minister in my department wants to, and will be, valued for the public work carried out. It does not make any sense. Obviously, I’m not blocking them.

Church thieves have no regard
A Guanche world, here in the South COMPARED with the archaeological remains in Gran Canaria, and La Palma’s prehistoric rock formations, Tenerife’s equivalent sites and places linked to the Guanches remain hidden.
But a growing number of experts believe that depriving natives of any direct contact with their ancestors’ history is unjustified in this day and age. Yet, they say, there are ways of making the sites visible to the public, yet still preserving their historic value, which will fix the lack of cultural recognition with the Guanche world. As proof of this rich heritage, here’s a glance at five Guanche landmarks in Tenerife South. Guia de Isora: The Markings of Aripe Discovered in 1980 near Aripe village, they were the first rock-markings of their kind catalogued in Tenerife. They remain hard for archaeologists to interpret, yet Professor Antonio Tejera Gaspar believes they could represent warriors carrying weapons. Vilaflor: The Giant’s Footprint
Doctor Juan Bethencourt Alfonso (1847-1913) was the first to discover this type of rugged-rock formation, which appears in several locations here in the South. Researchers believe that they could be sacred spaces, where funeral rituals were practised. Guaza: Los Magotes battle At the end of the 15th century, during the Spanish conquest of Tenerife, the tables of Guaza staged the final battle, which took place at dawn on 29th September 1496. Firearms earned the Spanish their victory, marking their conquest. Arona: The Suicide Trail Roque de Igara was declared a cultural asset and Archaeological zone in 1999. The Roque Igara witnessed the ritual suicides carried out from its summit. Upon the death of a Guanche, a young volunteer, from the lowest social castes of the native society, would throw himself off the summit with deceased Guanche’s intestines wrapped in reeds, believing he was sending messages from the nobles. Guimar: Chinguaro Cave This is one of the Island’s most important places in Guanche history. It was the first area to worship the Virgin of Candelaria Chaxiraxi for the Guanches until it moved to the San Blas cave, in Candelaria.
SOME view Christmas as an opportunity for crime, rather than a sacred part of the calendar. And thieves in Adeje used the cover of night to break into the Church of San Jose, in the Los Olivos area of Adeje town.
In their frantic quest to find items of value, they desecrated the most sensitive areas of the modern church and got away with loose change and several valuable artefacts. The alert was raised on Tuesday morning when local nuns entered the church and were shocked to find a small back-door forced open and a trail of damage inside. A crown and cross from the statue of the Virgin, plus a chalice and a collection box, were among the items missing when local police examined the scene. The church, which has been robbed previously, is in a secluded area, surrounded on three sides. This, unfortunately, makes it easy for robbers to help themselves without being spotted. Luckily, the financial damage was fairly limited, but what has angered people mostly is the callous disregard of local culture, religion and tradition. The thieves took away a canopy in which sacred scrolls are kept. They even broke open a model boat used as a vending point for candles, lit by people saying prayers in the church. The church was officially opened in 2010 as a fitting monument to San Jose,
Patron Saint of the Los Olivos parish, which is home to barely 2,000 people. The appearance, contrasting the modern outside with a more traditional interior, was designed by Francisco Coello de Portugal, originally from Jaen, on the Spanish
mainland. A lack of knowledge, or a rush to get away, prevented the intruders’ haul from being more valuable. The church houses seven oil paintings by Conrado, which were given a new lease of life by Adeje Council’s restoration workshop.
Taxi Association wins court battle
ADEJE Council has been forced to open more than 80 files for each taxi licence involved in a court case in Santa Cruz, won by the Adeje Taxi Association (ATACA). The Association demanded that the licences be revoked by the Council because of various, alleged irregularities, especially in the management and ownership of them. Its representative, who asked Judge Jaime Guilarte Martín-Calero to declare them invalid, added: “Their
owners do not meet the requirements to carry out this activity.” Judge Martín-Calero, in denying a Council request for more time to go through the licence files, responded: “It’s unbelievable that the Council allocates municipal resources to answer a mere list of questions, and then asks for more time to process ‘various licence records’, claiming it doesn’t have enough resources.” The Taxi Association is also challenging the Council
issuing 23 new licences, arguing: “How can the local government grant them without resolving the 80
licences being reviewed by the courts, which could be revoked? “The local government
(council) needs to understand this is imperative.” But the Council insisted that Adeje municipality had the capacity to offer another 150 taxi licences, saying: “This will be established after the Mayor answer the judge’s questions.” ATACA is also concerned that a significant number of drivers opting for these new licences are related directly to other taxi-owners in the municipality, which is not allowed under the current legislation.

Conor McGregor lands in Tenerife WE are lucky enough to have a whole array of celebrities visit Tenerife, but this week we have a superstar!
Irishman Conor McGregor, who became the first UFC 205 dual-weight world champion last month, showed off his luxurious penthouse in an Instagram video in the early hours of Tuesday morning, after landing here. The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s charismatic, mixed martial arts’ fighter, who arrived by private jet, took his fans on a tour of the penthouse and made sure that his two world-title belts are in shot. In the video, McGregor says: “Just landed in the suite with the two world titles. The champ champ. “Flying the only way we know how … and to anyone else who can’t fly private, I’d like to take this chance to apologise to … absolutely nobody.” After becoming the first dual-weight world champion in the promotion’s history at UFC 205, the Dubliner had little time to enjoy his huge, unique success. The UFC shocked fans last week when they announced that McGregor, who remains lightweight champion, had been forced to relinquish his featherweight title after nearly a year without defending it. However, the 28-year-old was quick to make it clear that he had done no such thing in a Q&A with fans in Belfast at the weekend. “They’re trying to strip me,” he explained. “Well, I ain’t stripped. I still got that
belt. That belt’s sitting in my home right now. I’m still the two-weight world champion. Someone’s got to come take that off me.” So it seems that the UFC have a hard task on their hands if they want to take the belt off McGregor … it’s in his penthouse in little old Tenerife! While here, McGregor has been mobbed by fans, and has taken time to pose for photos and sign autographs, a sign of his growing popularity on the world stage. When he leaves Tenerife, it is reported that he will appear in one of the remaining two seasons of Game of Thrones, because one of the directors is a huge UFC fan. He believes the supreme mixed martial arts fighter would be a perfect fit for the show. For many fans in Tenerife, the best fantasy show is McGregor, right here on our island!

Wales ‘opt-out’ system increases organ donors SINCE plans were unveiled in Wales last year for an optout system regarding organ donors, the number has risen by 33%. A change to the process means adults automatically become donors after their death, just as they are in Spain, unless they have chosen to opt out beforehand. And the number of life-saving donor organs has jumped from 120 in the 11 months from December, 2013, to 160 in the 11 months after December, 2015. Wales became the first UK country to introduce the system, and the Scottish government this week launched a consultation on changing the law there. Figures from the Welsh government show that in the past year, 39 organs from patients whose consent was “deemed”, have been transplanted into people in vital need. Welsh Health Secretary Vaughan Gething said: “I am extremely proud that, thanks to this legislation, we lead the way as the first nation in the UK to move to a soft opt-out system of consent.
“I fully expect that our new system will create a step-change in consent for organ donation in Wales. The benefits to those needing a transplant will, literally, be life-changing.” Organs available are the same as the opt-in method, including kidneys, heart, liver, lungs and pancreas, and can go anywhere in the UK. Figures from NHS Blood and Transplant show there are about 6,500 people across the UK in need of an organ transplant. Dr Chris Hingston, of Cardiff’s University Hospital of Wales, said: “We’ve seen a big impact in terms of families asking about organ donation. But equally, families actually know their loved-ones’ wishes.” Millions of people across Scotland will now be asked to give their views on proposed new legislation to introduce a soft opt-out system there. The process will last 14 weeks, and will almost certainly increase pressure on England and Northern Ireland to follow suit.
Organ donation patient Kim Chard, of Bargoed, South Wales, who has cystic fibrosis, received two new lungs in a transplant one year ago. The 32-year-old said: “I was on the active transplant waiting list for 10 months until I got the call. But within 10 hours I was in theatre, receiving the lungs. “But the waiting was really hard. Every time my phone rang, I thought, ‘Could that be it?’ It was a difficult time for me, my husband and my whole family. “CF is a genetic condition which clogs your organs with sticky mucus. My lungs were failing, and, from age 18, they told me I would need a transplant.” Kim added: “I wanted to have some control over my life. Before the transplant I was in a wheelchair. I had a ventilator and a feeding tube. Now I don’t have any of those. “For the first time in six years I’ve put some art in an exhibition. I’m also able to take our French bulldog for walks. I even went for a short run.
Yéremi suspect charged in second case JUAN Ojeda Bordón, main suspect in the disappearance of Yéremi Vargas from Vecindario, Gran Canarias, in March 2007, has received a fiveyear jail term for sexually assaulting a minor on the same island more than four years ago.
It was proved in the Las Palmas Court that Bordón, alias “El Rubio, approached a child playing alone on a street in El Doctoral (a neighbouring town to Vecindario) on 12th July 2012. He enticed the child back to the shack where he lives, with the promise of a new bike. But once there, he sexually assaulted the minor. “El Rubio” was charged earlier this year with the possible death of Yéremi Vargas, after the Guardia Civil obtained evidence linking him to the child’s disappearance nine years ago. The case has yet to be resolved.
There are millions of Lottery chances
TOTAL prize-money for this year’s Christmas Lottery in the Canary Islands alone is an astounding 86.5 million euros. Canarians spend an average of 41 euros on the enormous Lottery, which takes place on 22nd December. And, compared with the rest of Spain, it is the lowest amount.
The State Lottery and State Betting Commission reveals that each Tenerife resident forks out 51.20 euros, which is more than the people of Las Palmas, who average 32.12. This year’s Lottery throughout the Canary Islands will comprise a total of 432,940 lottery sheets with 10 tickets on each.

Away in a manger …at Santa Cruz!
By Colin Kirby
REMEMBER when Christmas wasn’t all about who gets the No.1 single, or what computer game was top of the list?
Pop up to Santa Cruz and reawaken your child-like wonder at the nativity at several Belén (Bethlehem) displays. They’re free to view and open until 6th January. The Cabildo building between the Port and Plaza de España has a four-sided depiction of the Christmas story, weaved around a model of Bethlehem. It is intricate in detail, but you can pick out villagers and their animals, as well as the manger scene and the Three Kings arriving by camel. It has been created by a dedicated Los Realejos team, and is being staged
by the Tenerife museums’ group. Normally, it has a collection box for a local charity, in which you can show your appreciation - it’s certainly worthy of your loose change. Opening times are 9am3pm and 4-9.30 pm, except for Christmas Eve (9am4pm); Christmas Day (49.30pm); New Year’s Eve (9am-3pm), New Year’s Day 3-9.30pm), and 6th Jan (49.30pm). Close by, in Plaza del Candelaria, you will find the large Bethlehem stable with Mary and Joseph, but
the crib remains empty until Christmas Day. It’s always a big focal point for people heading up the main shopping street of Calle Castillo. And children can post their present requests in the special Royal Postbox next door, with a direct slot to each of the three kings, Balthasar, Gaspar, and Melchior. To immerse yourself in the bigger picture, try the biggest Belén of all, at the Caja Canarias bank HQ, Espacio Cultural. Turn right as you go up Calle Castillo and head for Plaza del Patriotismo. A huge, rolling landscape will greet you, stretching from the shepherds grazing their sheep up high in the hills and down to moving figures of foresters, chopping wood, and fish swimming in a pond. The cycle of day and night comes and goes quickly,
thanks to a timer dimming and brightening the room. Apart from public holidays, it is open Mon-Sat (11.30am1.30pm, and 5-8.30pm); Sundays (10am-1.30pm). How about a world view of Christmas? La Recova exhibition hall, behind the Teatro Guimera, always offers a Green Christmas with its Art Belén, featuring imaginative creations made from recycled material.
This year, the zones show different traditions from the Philippines, Norway, Peru, and the Canary Islands. Trees, monuments, people, cactus, and even a llama, are all made from the things most people throw away, such as 500sq/m of cardboard, 150 plastic bags, 500 plastic bottles, and 2,800 bottle tops. Opening times are MonSat (11am-1pm, and 6-9pm); Sundays, (11am-2pm).

Revamped Plaza will offer good sea views
A PROJECT to remodel the Santa Cruz Plaza de España, costing nearly 5m euros, will offer much more space for pedestrians, and will set it closer to the sea.
Enormous sand sculpture really is food for thought By Colin Kirby
THE Last Supper scene, inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s painting, has been reproduced faithfully on the Los Cristianos beach.
It features the 12 Apostles, each up to two metres high and made of sand and water only. And they are accompanied by colossal cathedrals and a beautiful nativity scene. The astonishing sculpture, created by Daniel Dimitri and
his partners, is capturing the attention of tourists and residents alongside the promenade. The sight really is a wonder to behold. And, said Daniel: “We were inspired by religious motifs to celebrate Christmas. “We like these topics and many Catholics pass by here, so we thought it was a good idea. We took about 10 days to finish it.” The huge sculpture, in one of the little coves near the
Arona Gran Hotel, meant the artistes had to make numerous trips in search of sand from nearby beaches. “The sand here has a lot of stones and is no good to us,” said Daniel ruefully. But he believes that nothing is complicated if you have a firm idea beforehand. “If you add imagination, everything is easy,” he said. However, to keep his creation intact, it is very important that
it doesn’t dry out. “A sand sculpture like this requires 10 tons of water a month, which is about 300 litres of water a day,” he added. “Lots of people pass by here, especially on Sundays when the market is on. We really cannot complain because we are happy with the result.” The numerous coins in his collection bucket, and his grateful thanks, confirm it. “People are very generous,” he said. And there’s no rush to enjoy this impressive sand sculpture because it will be here until the end of Christmas, he confirmed.
Farewell, sweet Rosie
By Val Sainsbury
ROSIE appeared in the Canarian Weekly over a year ago, and was thought to be Tenerife’s oldest cat. Sadly, she has passed away.
The tortoiseshell was abandoned by her owners 25 years ago, when they moved away from a San Eugenio complex. But she was far from being on her own, because several residents there, including Maria Denniss, took it in turns to look after her throughout her life. Maria said: “It is with much sadness that I have to say that Rosie died in August, following a short illness. She was a very special cat, and
touched many hearts in her life.” She had wanted to advise Canarian Weekly readers of her death before now, but had been too upset to write in. She said: “I was one of the many people who cared for Rosie, and fed her while we were here on holiday. I became very attached to her. “But, in April 2014, it became clear that she was getting too old to live outside, and needed specialist care. Then, Cats Welfare stepped in and took her to the retirement home of her dreams. “It was five-star luxury for cats, high up in the hills, and she was looked after by two very special, caring people. “Thanks to them, Rosie lived, and loved, a wonderful quality of life, enjoying an
additional 2½ years, and all in sheer paradise.” Maria added: “She chose her own special area to sleep (by the fireside, of course), and was fed chicken, fish and cat milk. Without this support, I doubt she would have survived more a couple of months. “However, the last week of her life was traumatic. My friends did everything in their power to make her
better, but, sadly, they had to make the dreaded decision to have her put to sleep. “I would like to share with other people what true dedication and selfless devotion they give to many deprived cats and kittens. “I cannot thank them enough for what they did for Rosie, and all the other sick and vulnerable cats they take into their home.” Maria stressed the value of Cats Welfare in Tenerife, saying: “Please help by donating cash, unwanted items of clothing and anything else that will help the charity continue their excellent work. “I would also like to say a big thank-you to my neighbours in San Eugenio, who always rally round and find as many unwanted items for the charity as they can.”
It has been taken on by architects Herzog y De Meuron and work, which will take two years, should start in 2017. The Cabildo will pay 75% of the cost and Santa Cruz Council the remainder. The space is now occupied almost entirely by works being carried out jointly by the Port Authority and the Canarian Government for an underground connection to the port. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, and Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez, said the construction would definitely move Tenerife’s capital towards the sea. And within the Plaza’s extra 18,400sq/m space, there will be green belt area, as well as a park for outdoor activities.
Airport’s rubbishy welcome
A STRIKE by cleaning staff at Barcelona´s El Prat Airport left rubbish strewn all over the floors in Terminals T1 and T2.
Travellers arriving there were shocked to see the mess left after days without attention. The airport’s cleaners staged a series of noisy rallies in the complex as part of an ongoing dispute with Spanish operator AENA. A number of passengers took to social media describing the filth as a health hazard, while others spoke of walking past rubbish bins piled high with waste, and the remains of discarded food. And, with Christmas approaching, the union representing the cleaning staff has threatened further action. Last year, nearly 40 million travellers used the airport, which is Spain’s secondlargest.

Two drowned as flooding wreaks havoc on resorts
Ryanair’s new packages worry holiday firms LOW-COST airline Ryanair has set the cat among the pigeons by announcing its own range of package holidays, with accommodation to Spain and Portugal initially.
Chief Marketing Officer Kenny Jacobs says the company intends to become the “Amazon of travel”, starting next year by offering summer holidays to tourists from the UK and Germany, who are Europe’s
largest package-purchasers. Ryanair also intends to offer third-party services, including car-hire and hotels, via its website, and has plans to sell tickets to concerts and sporting events in the near future. Its strategy, it claims, is partly a defence mechanism to avoid being overtaken by internet giants. Mr Jacobs adds: “Ryanair will work with Logitravel, a tour operator based in Spain, and accommodationprovider World2Meet, and the company intends to boost bookings initially by foregoing commissions.”
FIREMEN and police divers tried in vain to save a 26-year-old Romanian woman, who drowned in the basement of a 24-hour sex club in Estepona, Malaga, last Sunday morning.
The club owner has been detained by police, who believe she was locked in the basement. But he insists she was not working or living there while looking for an apartment. The woman, of Romanian nationality, was said to have been alone inside the California Club when the storm struck. She made a desperate call to the emergency services when she realised she was trapped as the water level rose to a dangerous level. A passer-by caught the drama on video as Estepona bore the brunt of the freak weather, which also hit Marbella, Malaga, Mijas and other towns and villages along this coastal stretch. The emergency services raced to the scene, but the water level in the street had reached the door tops by the
time they arrived, and they couldn’t gain entry. Finally, they were forced to smash open a door of the hostess club, which is part of a commercial centre in the town. “They battled so hard to get to her but couldn’t,” said a horrified witness. “All attempts to get her out failed.” An electrical storm, described by residents as “the strongest in memory” hit the Estepona area at around 4am and caused extensive chaos, with many people forced out of their homes. Meanwhile, a male electrician was in a van with three other workers when a flash flood swept it away in La Linea de la Concepcion, Cadiz, late that afternoon. The others managed to
escape, but he became trapped inside and died. The tragedy occurred in the Zabal zone, where the men had been working to try repair a power cut. In a post on Facebook, La Linea Mayor Juan Jose Franco declared three days of mourning, adding: “He was working to restore power to the area when it happened. We are profoundly sadly for his loss, and we are united with his family in their grief.” Over the weekend, several families had to abandon their flooded homes. Dozens of cars were abandoned on the Costa del Sol roads, and more than 200 emergency calls were made in the Campo de Gibraltar, which also includes La Linea, San Roque and Los Barrios. Elsewhere, firefighters in Malaga City rescued a man who became trapped in the pedestrian tunnel next to the Hacienda building, while three women were also saved on the Guadalhorce industrial estate. Sergio Cuberos, President of Malaga’s Industrial Estates Association, said: “The Santa Cruz estate is just a massive lake, and we haven’t seen anything like this since the 1989 floods.”

Your ticket Bolivia police arrest please sir! boss of tragic plane THE head of Lamia, the company operating the charter aircraft which crashed near Medellín last week, killing 71 people, has been arrested by Bolivian authorities.
IT’S the station from which passengers are absolutely guaranteed a seat. In fact, they can have the run of the train because just one person a month uses the Shippea Hill service, in East Cambridgeshire. Needless to say, it has again topped a league table of the UK’s quietest stations, frequented, amazingly, by just 12 people last year. Just one passenger a month boarded or exited a train at the 170-year-old station serving the hamlet, and is down from an annual 22 in 2014-15. One train travelling towards Norwich stops at the outpost on weekdays, but there is no return service. And another thing, Shippea Hill is a request stop, so the solitary traveller MUST flag down the driver if he or she wants to board! The annual figures, from the Office for Rail
and Road for 2015-16, show that eight stations across the country recorded fewer than 100 “entries and exits”. Reddish South station, in Greater Manchester, was the second-quietest with just 54 passengers. By contrast, London’s Waterloo was the UK’s busiest station, with nearly 100 million passengers coming in and out during the 12-month period. That’s equivalent to around three people a second. London Victoria, where Southern Rail commuters have been enduring delays and strike chaos for months, is the secondbusiest, handling 81.2m passengers. Overall, there was an estimated average of nearly three billion entries and exits at all UK rail stations. Not that this figure would be of any interest to the dedicated Shippea Hill passengers!
Leon Corcoran dies, at just 33 LEON Corcoran, who worked alongside his father, Simon, in the family’s trees and garden business, died last Friday. The 33-year-old, who loved pool, played for Exiles Bar on Coral Mar Square and lived in Los Abrigos. The family would like everyone who knew
Leon, or whose life he touched in some way, to join them next Friday (16th December), for a memorial service at Costa Silencio Family Church, Coral Mar Square, at 3pm. Afterwards, there will be a toast at Exiles Bar, as mourners wish Leon Wayne Corcoran a last farewell.
Players and officials of Brazilian club Chapecoense, on their way to the South American Cup final first leg against Colombia’s Atletico Nacional, were virtually decimated by the crash. Apart from Gustavo Vargas Gamboa, arrest warrants have been issued for five other employees following a raid on Lamia’s Santa Cruz headquarters in Bolivia by local police. An inquiry was launched when it emerged that the aircraft did not have enough fuel to cover the Santa CruzMedellín route safely. News reports claimed
that this was a common practice at Lamia, a small airline which has carried several professional sports teams. Vargas Gamboa, a retired military official, had previously been pilot for Bolivian President Evo Morales and several other leaders of the country. It has since emerged that one of Vargas
Gamboa’s sons sits on the executive board of the Civil Aviation General Directorship (DGAC), which granted Lamia its operating licence. Vargas Gamboa has produced a letter, dated three days before the crash, renouncing his job as director-general of Lamia. The letter was certified by a notary public, but prosecutors
have dismissed it. His arrest came a day after a Bolivian airport official, in charge of approving the flight plan, fled to Brazil, where she is seeking protection. Celia Castedo claims that she noted the flight’s risks ahead of departure. But Bolivian authorities believe she invented the story when it crashed.
Santa vs Jesus? It’s a tough call
WHO would win if Santa took on Jesus? That is the premise of a new board game, which has been labelled “blasphemous” by some.
The game is simple: there are two teams representing each of the iconic figures, and they have to compete to win ‘believers’. It’s creators Julian Miller and David McGranaghan came up with the concept at a festive celebration a few years ago. Mr Miller says: “Sales are exceeding all expectations,”but not everyone likes the concept, especially Christians. Evangelical Alliance spokesman Danny Webster said: “With over four out of 10 people in the UK thinking, mistakenly, that Jesus
was not a real, historical person, this game won’t help correct that. “At its heart, Christmas is about celebrating the birth of Jesus and the gift of life he brings. Santa comes from the story of St Nicholas, who, as a Christian bishop, was generous to the poor and was very
happy to have Christ as his king. “When it comes to Santa v Jesus, we’re firmly on Team Jesus, too.” Some users on Amazon.co.uk, from whom the game can be purchased, were also offended. And someone wrote in the review section.“I
dare you, creators of this game, and Amazon, to make a game about Mohammed!” The “Santa vs Jesus” board game was funded through Kickstarter, a crowd-sourcing website, and that fact alone proves there is definitely a market for it.

Ryan’s Christmas wish just grows, and grows! SCHOOLBOY entrepreneur Ryan Brook, who has grown around 1,500 Christmas trees, is flogging them off to pay for his university education.
Ryan, now 16, recalls that when he was just nine, he hunted through supermarkets and garden centres with his mother, Gail, in search of the right festive tree. That year, his dad, Andy, gave him his first young tree to plant … and his passion grew from there. In seven years, that one sapling has turned into about 1,500 trees, and Ryan is now selling them at £20 each from his dad’s field in Dean, Somerset. This year he is aiming to make several thousand pounds from the public, beating last year’s figure of about about £2,000, raised by selling some 100 trees to friends and family. For Ryan, it is a year-round business, and he devotes his weekends to planting and maintaining his “income”. And each year, as Christmas approaches, the rest of the family rally around the youngster, helping dad Andy cut down the trees because he is too young to use a chainsaw. Meanwhile, his mum and sister, Cianni, hand out flyers promoting the ‘Ryan’s Trees’ company. “It all started when I was nine,” said Ryan. “I remember being dragged around by my mum to lots of different supermarkets, searching for the right
Christmas tree. It took hours and hours and I was so bored. “But my dad gave a sapling to my sister and me, and said I could sell mine or keep it. The next year, he gave me 10 saplings, and it became my aspiration to turn it into something. “Ultimately, the plan is to expand as much as possible and see where that takes me. Any profit I make will go towards paying my university fees.” Ryan, a pupil at Shepton Mallet’s Whitstone School, is completely devoted to his Christmas-tree business. And he spends lots of time in the field throughout the year to make sure they are in perfect condition for the Christmas season. “We are selling them every week, but actually maintaining them is quite difficult,” he said. “You need to remove all the grass grown around the trees because it gets in the way of the trunk and stops the trees from getting nutrients. “There’s quite a bit of maintenance involved, from November onwards, and then in January, we spend our weekends replacing the missing trees with more saplings. “From February to October, we still come up a few times a month to remove the grass that has grown, and make sure of the trees’ well-being.” The astute young businessman added: “I love Christmas, and this is so rewarding. It takes a long time before you see any progress, but it’s worth it when you do.”

to treat obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) successfully. It is a type of anxiety disorder, characterised primarily by obsessions (distressing, persistent and intrusive images or thoughts) and
compulsions (urges to perform certain acts or rituals). It affects some 8% of the world population by preventing them, in many cases, to live their lives with normality, according to studies from the Nardone Institute In the Canary Islands, it affects to about 170,000 people. Many people affected choose to hide their symptoms and do not seek help when the problem first starts, or are diagnosed properly.

Trump’s triumph for US workforce DONALD Trump, US Presidentelect, was planning to travel to the state of Indiana yesterday (Thursday,) with Vice -President Mike Pence, to announce a deal that will save around 1,000 jobs.
He has pledged to keep open an Indianapolis air-conditioning factory, owned by Carrier, which was scheduled to relocate to Mexico. Few details have yet emerged, apart from Carrier sending out a tweet last week that it was “pleased to have reached a deal” with Trump. Throughout his election campaign, Trump promised to prevent US manufacturers from moving their jobs overseas, particularly to Mexico. His emphasis on industrial jobs, in part, explains his appeal with working-class voters in states throughout the country’s rust belt, which have, traditionally, voted Democrat in presidential elections. Last week, Trump said he was “making progress” on making sure Carrier would remain in Indiana. The company had announced in February that it was closing its Indianapolis plant and moving its manufacturing to Mexico. This would have seen the factory’s workers laid off
over three years, from 2017. In a September debate against Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, Trump picked out Carrier for criticism. “So many hundreds and hundreds of companies are doing this,” he said. “We have to stop our jobs from being stolen from us. We have to stop our companies from leaving the United States.” Trump seems to be living up to his campaign pledge to be friendlier to businesses by easing regulations and overhauling the corporate tax code. And, say local officials, the state of Indiana also plans to give economic incentives to Carrier as part of the deal to stay, Trump had also criticised Ford after
the company said it planned to invest $2.5bn in engine and transmission plants in Mexico. The company has since announced it will continue to produce its upscaled Lincoln model at its Kentucky plant. The decline of US industry has hit the country’s middle and working classes hard. Men and women, who have spent their adult lives working in factories, now find themselves flipping burgers or working in other low-skilled, lowwage service sectors. Globalisation has forced many companies to relocate to countries with lower wage bills in a bid to maintain competitiveness. In the last 15 years, 60,000 factories have closed, with the
disappearance of 4.8 million jobs. This was pointed out repeatedly on the campaign trail by Bernie Sanders, who lost the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination race to Hillary Clinton, As The New York Times, which broke the Carrier story, has argued, only a businessman like Trump could take on corporate America without being called a Bernie Sanders-style socialist. “If Barack Obama had tried the same manoeuvre, he’d probably have drawn criticism for intervening in the free market,” said the paper.
Who’s a clever boy now, then?
AN observant parrot could be the only witness in a murder trial of a woman, accused of shooting her husband five times before turning the gun on herself.
Glenna Durham, 46, spent months in hospital recovering from a gunshot wound to her head, which she inflicted herself. But she is now well enough to appear in court to answer charges. There were no witnesses to what happened on 12th May last year, except the grey parrot, which, since that day, is said to have kept repeating: “Don’t f***ing shoot! Don’t f***ing shoot!” Prosecutors argue that he overheard these words during the altercation between Glenna and her partner, Martin Durham, 45, at their Michigan home. Glenna was in court last Friday to determine whether she would stand trial later this month. Police maintain she shot and killed her husband at their home in Newaygo County’s Ensley Township. The couple were alleged to have had a row about gambling debts and unpaid bills, before Glenna seized the gun and blasted her husband, before shooting herself in the head. During the preliminary hearing her neighbour,
Connie Ream, testified that she heard two gunshots on that fatal May morning last year. At first she thought Martin was hunting, but when she checked on them, she saw two motionless bodies on the floor. Another witness said the house appeared to have been “ransacked”, with things scattered everywhere. And police, reportedly, found a note at the home to the couple’s three children reading: “Please forgive me [you’re] one of the best things I ever did - Love mom.” Martin’s ex-wife, Christine, now looking after the parrot, believes the bird repeated her former husband’s last words. Allegedly, the parrot also remembered the start of the argument, repeating words such as “Get out” and “Where will I go?” Prosecutor Robert Springstead said: “It is something we are going to be looking at to determine if it’s reliable to use, or if it is information we need to prosecute this case.”
Arona’s ‘bad’ girls are in the spotlight
THE real level of prostitution in Arona was highlighted last Saturday during a meeting against gender violence, organised by the Council’s Social Services.
It took place at the Auditorium Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos, and those who attended all agreed
that Arona Council should be taking the situation seriously. It should, they agreed, draw up a realistic plan of action, including health checks, because most of them receive medical care, thanks to non-profit organisations. For example, the voluntary Cruz Blanca Foundation has implemented a specific programme in Arona, which has revealed the existence of 15 clubs,
two street points, six villas, 18 apartments and six erotic massage parlours, all dedicated to prostitution. In addition, the study shows that between 80-90% of women practising prostitution there are foreign. From the start of this programme, in 1995, the majority of prostitution was on the street, and women in the profession used it to pay for their drug addiction needs.

Smashing time for the angry brigade!
IT is the ultimate place for hotheaded people, who want to take out their anger on someone, something … or anything! And it is perfectly legal.
Zaac Spencer, a former fork-lift truck driver has set up a “rage-cage” business, charging people up to £35 to smash household items. The bizarre attraction, in a disused Nottinghamshire church, offers adults, and even children, a chance to cut loose on electronics, crockery and glassware. Customers can spend 20 minutes, crunching and shattering items at The Rage Cage, in Brinsley. The 25-year-old, said: “It’s the ultimate place to release your anger. There isn’t a place like
this in the UK where you can do what we are doing. I believe that’s the main reason people come.” Zaac, who has two children, spent £7,500 converting the disused church. “I thought, ‘why not’? I’ve literally winged the whole thing. We’ll start off small and, hopefully, grow the empire,” he added. “Shortly after Christmas, depending how well the business is doing, I’ll be looking to employ people, so that I can focus on opening the next Rage Cage in a city.” Customers choose between a number of packages, the cheapest being a 15-minute bash for £13, to crunch five small items (there’s also an option of smashing a printer for an extra £4). They are given a hard hat, gloves and goggles,
and can choose between a hammer, crowbar or baseball bat to wield. The next package, called Unleash, costs £20 and includes four small items, one medium-sized one and a printer. In addition, Zaac has a “couples therapy” option, at a cost of £35, which gives the pair a chance to vent their spleen for 20 minutes, wrecking 11 small and medium items And you can even pay £10 for a 15-minute session, wrecking your own household items. A number of “anger rooms” have opened around the globe, especially in the US and Australia, but The Rage Cage is the first of its kind to open in Britain. Oh, and paying customers must sign a disclaimer, saying the business is not responsible for any injuries sustained.
Huge cannabis jungle missed by farm owner POLICE uncovered an enormous drug haul, the most significant Costa Blanca bust in decades, at a farm in Elche. More than 10,000 cannabis plants were seized from a sophisticated greenhouse set-up. The owner, apparently in the dark about the illegal, industrial-scale goings-on in his property, is actually considered to be a witness. The haul weighed more than three tons and has an estimated street value of an astonishing 9m euros, with the
plantation spread across 6,000s/qm in Torrellano, just west of the airport. National Police officers and specialist narcotics officers raided the premises, confiscating the plants and paraphernalia but no arrests were made. The quantities produced were so huge that police had to call Alicante’s City Hall for a truck to remove the weed. Even then, it took multiple journeys to transport the 10,500 plants.
Those who masterminded the project, who have rapidly disappeared, for now anyway, knew precisely what they were doing because the equipment included automatic irrigation systems, timed temperature controls, hydroponics, and decoy plants to mask the marihuana. In fact, the smell gave the game away because local residents eventually sensed it was no ordinary stench and informed the authorities.

ADAMA Barrow will hardly have to watch his back when he moves into Gambia’s presidential palace, which is an opulent white building in Banjul.
That’s because Adama, who will take the country’s highest office as Gambia President after trouncing current leader Yahya Jammeh, once worked as a security guard for the Argos store, in North London. And not a lot gets past his eagle eyes. Now, he’ll be deciding his country’s foreign policy and honouring state guests; then, he was tasked with keeping an eye on shoplifters. He was also a dab hand at defusing any awkward situations with customers pushing to get their order first, and he even tackled a thief, who was jailed for six months. So he is not a man to be taken lightly. Adama, who lived on a London housing estate between 1998 and 2002, studied property management before moving back to the small, West African country and launching a successful estateagent business. Yet his colourful past was used against him by

opposition politicians. Sheriff Bojang, the country’s then Information Minister, mocked him at a rally, saying: “We have heard that Mr Barrow worked as a security guard in … what is it, this shop called Argos, in Britain?” But 51-year-old Adama believes that his work in
lower-level jobs, at a festival, in offices and other highstreet stores, gave him a better grounding. “My time in Britain taught me the importance of working hard and good timekeeping,” he said. “And both those things helped me a lot when I went back home.”
The incumbent Gambian President Yahya Jammeh, leader of the APRC (The Alliance for Patriotic Reorientation and Construction) was an electoral favourite to clinch his fifth term in power. But the election, on 1st December, proved otherwise,
and Adama’s success came as a tremendous shock to APRC voters, especially as Yahya had even boasted that he would rule the country for a “billion years”. Adama, who led a coalition against him, won 263,515 votes compared with his rival’s 212,099 … a whopping 51,000 majority. Yahya came to power in 1994 after seizing control of the country in a coup. In the two decades since, he has won a series of elections that were denounced by critics as being “rigged”. This time, despite claiming that his victory was all but assured by Allah, he is expected to concede defeat peacefully. Adama said on voting day that he believed strongly that Gambians were ready for change, adding: “He is not going to be re-elected - his era is finished.” Never a truer word…

Vets warn: Booze can kill your pets IT’S that time of year when you tend to overindulge, drink more than is good for you, and leave half-empty glasses around the home as you wander off to bed.
But your pets are likely to succumb to alcohol poisoning during the festive period, as they sneak a sip of any available drink. And with more people now drinking at home than in bars, the problem is likely to get worse for pets, who could suffer the most dire of consequences. With time galloping by as usual, leading up to the Christmas period, vets have warned that cats and dogs are naturally inquisitive. They are likely to sniff out and taste any liquids left in glasses on the floor. And because of their size, it takes very little to make them drunk. While the majority of cases are cause by careless owners, there is a sinister new twist to the phenomenon of drunken pets. Some animals are being given alcoholic drinks deliberately, so owners can film their antics and broadcast them on socialmedia platforms such as Youtube. Several films have already been posted online, showing owners feeding beer and other alcohol to their pets. Last year, vets treating pets with alcohol poisoning contacted the Veterinary Poisons Information Service (VPIS) for advice on 26 occasions, up from just five in 2000. So far this year there have been 18 cases reported to the VPIS, even before the start of the festive celebrations. The worried VPIS stresses that the number of household animals swallowing alcohol is likely to be far higher, with many cases going unreported. A spokesman for the Service said: “We can only report on cases we are called about. I suspect that vets see lots of cases of mild intoxications, but they know what to expect and how to treat it, so they don’t call us. The actual numbers reported could, therefore, be much higher.” In fact, an Argos Pets Insurance company survey found that 25% of pet owners admit their dogs have been drunk, and a similar
proportion of British vets report that they have treated a drunken canine during their careers. Gudrun Ravetz, President of the British Veterinary Association, said: “Pets are inquisitive, and they
will hunt out human food and drink that can be hazardous to their health. “Dogs and other pets are far smaller than we are, so their toxic levels are reached much quicker, which makes
any access to alcohol by them more dangerous. “If a pet can get to alcohol, it can lead to several serious health issues, from a distressed and disorientated pet who does not understand what’s happening to them, to seizures and even respiratory failure” The BVA chief added: “If owners suspect their pet has consumed alcohol, they should contact their local vet immediately.” Pet-owner Sarah Hendy told how her dog Casey, whom she rescued as an abandoned puppy, suffered severe illness after drinking a glass of Bailey’s cream, which had been left on the
floor last New Year’s Eve. Casey quickly became floppy and began suffering from fits. Sarah’s vet administered an epilepsy tablet and put Casey under a general anaesthetic. But despite the treatment, she began “fitting” again. Her heart-rate increased to dramatic levels - before she finally succumbed to the poisoning. Sarah, from Bristol, said: “I bet everyone knows someone who has a funny story about a drunken dog. But there’s nothing funny about seeing a family member suffering the way Casey did. Her reaction is a very real possibility.
Weird names that won’t inspire a blooming thing LATIN names such a ranunculus and bellis perennis, as well as long, mind-boggling words, are putting the “iPad generation” off gardening, according to the man who buys goods for Britain’s biggest garden-centre chain.
Tim Clapp would relish banning a particular set of words because they confuse so many people, especially youngsters, turning them against the enjoyable pastime. These “monster” words include: Hardy, deciduous, ericaceous, shrubs, perennials, herbaceous, annual, and even mulch. And, says Mr Clapp, head of range at Kingfisher, which owns the 308-strong B&Q chain: “These words are a language that means nothing to people. “The unfamiliar terms are overwhelming to youngsters, who are not getting the gardening bug.” Mr Clapp, addressing a horticultural trade meeting, said: “Don’t worry about Mr and Mrs Smith, aged 65, who come into the garden centre every week. Worry about these people who will grow your business.” He stressed that his two rules for a successful garden centre were “to get your
plants right; then get your buns right”. The gardening expert said: “Our centres need to attract customers we never see, and who we have no idea about what they want and how we go about engaging with them. “My worry is how many of these people are out there, and how many we are not engaging with.” He added that declining home ownership was hitting gardening, “because young people renting properties don’t want to leave the plants for the landlord”. Mr Clapp said: “What is needed instead are simple solutions for the iPad generation, like ‘plant and forget’ and ‘bomb-proof’ plants.
“It’s about lifting the confusion for them. A typical B&Q gardening customer is slightly older, more often female, likes tea and cake, and then looks at the plants.” Graham Spencer, head of Plants For Europe, which represents plant breeders, told Horticulture Week: ‘Tim Clapp has a valid point. I don’t think he’s saying we should dumb gardening down, or rationalise ranges to five plants. He’s saying you need to offer plants that are simple to use, and reliable.” If you don’t know your Latin names, ranunculus is a buttercup, while bellis perennis is a daisy. And here’s what those those baffling gardening terms actually mean:
Hardy: Plants which don’t need to be raised indoors, and can be sown directly into flowerbeds in spring Deciduous: A tree or shrub that sheds its leaves annually Ericaceous: Describes plants that like acid soil and will not tolerate alkaline soils (containing lime or chalk), such as blueberries Herbaceous: Describes plants that have no woody stem above the roots Perennials: Plants that live for more than two years Evergreen: A plant that retains its green leaves throughout the year Annual: Plants that have a life cycle that lasts only one year Mulch: A layer of plant material such as grass clippings applied to the surface of an area of soil

WHAT IS CATASTRAZO?
By Mariano Zunino Siri Registered lawyer at the Tenerife Bar Association.
WE have read in the newspapers recently, that the government has approved several tax measures for next year, among them the increase of catastral values (catastrazo) of properties and land, in the Land Registry.
According to the specialised press, the Royal Decree on tax measures, announced on Thursday, 1st December, 2016, which came into force on 3rd December, 2016, includes an update of the catastral values for 2017 that will affect 2,452 Town Halls. This measure has a direct impact on the IBI (rates) since this tax is due on 1st January of each year. The IBI is a municipal tax, the amount depending on the cadastral value of the property. When raising the catastral value, logically, it increases the IBI. Direct and indirect taxes
The IBI is a direct tax, the same as Income Tax (IRPF), ISO (Corporate Income Tax) or Inheritance Tax. They are called direct because they are applied on a direct or immediate basis of the economic capacity as the possession of a patrimony or obtaining an income. Indirect taxes, on the other hand, charge the consumption of goods and services, and the transmission of goods and rights in general (not dependent on the characteristics or possessions of the taxpayer but the product itself), such as VAT or IGIC. National, regional and the local taxes In the Spanish tax system, there are three types of taxes according to the levels of Public Finance (national, regional and local). In the case of the IBI, this is a local tax, applied by the Town Hall where the property is located and, as previously said, its value depends on its catastral value. What is cadastre (catastral)? It is a registry of properties in which are described, with plans and measures, the real estate properties (farm land and urban land), on an escritura. It is a statistical record to determine the surface of the plots
and the geographical extent of any specific municipal area, which serves to give it a value and, thus, determine the collection of the IBI (property tax). Hence, it is so important for each Town Hall to “cadastre” the properties of its municipality, and maintain its updated value, to be able to ask for payment from the real-estate owners. For 2017, the municipalities have to inform the Government of all catastral value updates, by meeting the following criteria: 1) That it is at least five years since the last catastral update 2) That they have communicated the request to the General Directorate of the Cadastre before 31st May 3) That they have justified “substantial differences between market values and those that served as the basis for the determination of the current cadastral values” How to calculate IBI We know that the IBI is a direct, local tax, payable once a year by the owner of a property (apartment, garage, storage), and that its amount depends on the catastral value (other than the market value) of the property. The catastral value of the property is applied to a coefficient that
Hey, big-spenders! BRITAIN’S intended Brexit from the European Union has not deterred the folk living in the UK from lashing out on holidays.
Even before a somewhat traumatic year ends, they will have forked out £178bn (209.86bn euros) on trips at home and abroad. A new study, carried out by train-ticket retail company Trainline, has analysed the habits of German, British, Italian, and French travellers. Italians enjoyed the most holidays, while
Britons took the least. The average Brit went on 3.1 holidays this year, the French 3.3 and Germans 3.8, with Italians 5.4 jollies each. Spain and the Canaries were the most popular foreign destinations for Brits, nearly a third of all the people surveyed indicated that they had taken a trip to Spain at some point in the last year. Sunny Spain was also the top pick for both Germans and the French, whereas Italians picked the UK as their holiday destination of choice. But not all travellers chose to travel overseas abroad this year, some opting for
holidays closer to home. When it came to trips within the UK, London was the top choice, followed by Cornwall, Devon, and the Lake District. Activities enjoyed by travellers tended to vary widely, according to their nationality, with Brits showing themselves to be less fond of nature than their three counterparts. But it was a priority for only just over 25% of Brits, compared with nearly half of the other countries’ respondents. Generally, the Brits preferred to spend their holidays relaxing on the beach (39%) or sight-seeing (36%).
varies between 0.4% and 1.3% for urban real estate, depending on whether it is a provincial district capital or not, or the public services offered by such Town Hall. The catastral value to which the City Hall applies the percentage
chosen is calculated by the cadastre, through a series of criteria, such as the market value, construction costs, and the value of the materials or age of the building. Normally, it is a valued lower than the market price, so every 10 years
the Administration must check the catastral values of each municipality. There have been some cases in which it took so long to review the values that, suddenly, the receipt of IBI from one year to another was multiplied by 10!
Keep eye out for self-drive Apple
APPLE has at last admitted it is investing in building a selfdriving car, after ignoring several rumours in the past.
In a letter to US transport regulators, the giant American tech company said it was “excited about the potential of automated systems in many areas, including transportation”. There were, it added: “Significant, social benefits of automated vehicles to be realised.” It is the company’s first public admission about an association with self-drive vehicles. But Ford, which plans to have similar cars on the road by 2021, has said it was working on the basis that Apple was building one. The tech firm has already registered
several car-related internet domains, including apple.car and apple.auto. An Apple spokesman said the letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) was prompted by its “heavy investment in machinelearning and autonomous systems”, and that it wanted to help define best practices in the industry. The five-page letter, written by Steve Kenner, Apple’s director of product integrity, urges the regulator not to introduce too many rules on the testing of self-driving cars, saying that “established manufacturers and new entrants should be treated equally”. It also proposes that companies in the industry share data from crashes and nearmisses, to build a more comprehensive picture than one firm could
manage alone; thus, enabling the design of better systems. But it stresses that an individual’s privacy should not be compromised by the sharing of such data. Apple suggests that the industry and regulators “address privacy challenges associated with the collection, use, and sharing of automated vehicle data”, with collaboration from privacy experts outside the automotive industry. Google is already testing self-driving cars on the roads. In October, electric carmaker Tesla announced that all the cars it now builds will have the hardware installed to drive on their own. In the UK, an autonomous vehicle was test-driven in Milton Keynes in the summer, with further trials in London planned.

Rick Stein’s Long Weekends BBC2, 21:00
Rick’s series of culinary city breaks continues with a trip to the northeastern Greek city of Thessaloniki nestling on the northern shores of the Aegean Sea. The city is revered as the gourmet capital of Greece and birthplace to possibly the greatest warrior general that ever lived, Alexander. Rick explores a city of many identities, a time warp of Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman structures surprisingly teeming with a very young student population hungry for dishes that reflect the freshest of seafood, vibrant mezzes flavoured with cinnamon, paprika and saffron and sweet syrupy pastries. A true blend of west meeting east. Rick arrives just in time for harvesting peaches on land and mussels out at sea. At home he cooks veal and aubergine stew after meeting the doyenne of Greek cooking Vafa Alexiadou.

Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman host the Strictly Come Dancing live semi-final. This week the stakes are raised even higher, as each couple will perform two routines in a bid to impress the judges and the audience at home. They will all perform a Latin and a Ballroom routine, as they battle it out to see who will make it to this year’s final and go on to be crowned the Strictly Come Dancing 2016 Champions. Judges Len G o o d m a n , Darcey Bussell, Craig Revel Horwood and Bruno Tonioli will be watching very closely before delivering their verdicts on each dance. The voting lines open after all the couples have danced twice. Who will the viewers want to see in the Grand Final next weekend, and who will fall at the last hurdle?

Director and co-writer Paul King’s briskly paced partially-animated take on the furry hero of Michael Bond’s children’s books. Beginning with a Pathé newsreel-style preface in which a very English explorer in Peru introduces a family of bears to the delights of marmalade and the dignity of British manners, the film picks up the story some years later when tragedy causes a young bear to flee to London. Named Paddington after the station where he’s discovered by the Brown family - headed by reluctant Henry and his more adventurous wife Mary - the bear sets about clumsily integrating with the family, much to the delight of the Browns’ children. But it’s not all fun and slapstick - ruthless taxidermist Millicent bears a grudge, and sees Paddington as museum material...

W C choice Planet Earth II - Cities BBC1, 20.00
Cities are growing at a faster rate than any other habitat on Earth. They may seem an unlikely place for animals to thrive, but for the bold this is a world of surprising opportunity. Leopards prowl the streets of Mumbai, peregrine falcons hunt among New York’s skyscrapers and a million starlings perform spectacular aerial dances over Rome. We welcome some creatures into our cities. In Jodhpur, langurs are revered as religious deities and in Harar locals live in harmony with wild hyenas. Many animals, however, are struggling to cope in the urban jungle. As the architects of this environment can we choose to build cities that create a home for both us and for wildlife? Captured in stunning ultra-high definition detail, Planet Earth II is an immersive exploration of the islands, mountains, jungles, deserts, grasslands and cities of the world.

When Phillip Met Prince Philip: 60 Years choice of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award ITV1, 21.00 When Phillip Met Prince Philip: 60 Years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a brand new and unique documentary, which sees Phillip Schofield talking to HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in the 60th Anniversary year of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (DofE). As The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award enters a landmark year, Phillip explores the work of the Charity through exclusive access to many major celebratory events, as well as speaking to members of the Royal Family, including The Duke of Edinburgh and The Earl and Countess of Wessex about their involvement. As well as attending a special Gold Award Presentation in the garden at Buckingham Palace, Phillip will look back at the early days of the DofE and gain a close perspective on The Duke of Edinburgh’s work and the dedicated effort the Charity makes in supporting the development of young people all over the world. Phillip will meet The Duke of Edinburgh as he reflects on the achievement award he set up in 1956 and talks about its positive impact on the young people who take part, and he will also speak with The Earl and Countess of Wessex about the global reach of the DofE as well as their own roles in the continuing success of the Charity. Additionally, to mark its 60th year, The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award has created a one-time-only Diamond Challenge and thrown its doors wide open to applicants of all ages, whether newcomers or former participants, encouraging them – Phillip Schofield included, who undertakes a wing walk - to carry out their own personal ‘challenge’ so that they can raise money for the DofE Charity and receive a special Diamond Anniversary Challenge Pin. 60 Years of The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a unique celebration of the six decades’ worth of work of the DofE, designed to encourage personal discovery and self-reliance, with millions of young people spanning 141 countries and territories having done their DofE since 1956; and where, in the UK alone, over 2.5 million Awards have been achieved by young people.

Muslims Like Us BBC2, 21.00
Put ten British Muslims with contrasting world views in a house together and press ‘record.’ What emerges is a passionate debate, honest disagreements, humour and moments of insight that reveal what is like to be a Muslim in Britain today. On the surface, Britain’s 2.7 million Muslims are united in faith. But behind closed doors, in Muslim homes across the country, there is ongoing discussion about what and who best represents Islam. Labels like ‘Sunni’, ‘Shi’a’, ‘liberal’, ‘conservative’ and ‘moderate’ do not do it justice. Will the real British Muslim please stand up? She or he is faced with competing and contradictory voices. Some suggest an orthodox version of the faith is entirely at home in Britain. Others demand compromises to be made by Muslims in order to integrate.

Operation People Power With Dave Myers BBC1, 09.15 Dave Myers assembles a team of celebrities on a mission to find out just what can be achieved when volunteers come together to help others in need. One in three already people volunteer in the UK and Dave draws upon that spirit of getting involved to help community projects, meeting volunteers and those that benefit from the help of others. Dave calls on the help of Nicki Chapman (Wanted Down Under, Escape To The Country), Mark Millar (DIY SOS), Martyn Ashton (a biking legend turned motivator who suffered a crash which left him paralysed) and Juliet Sargent (Tanzanian-born Gold Winner at the RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2016), to muster an army of volunteers to help those who help others. Britain meets Eunice. After losing her husband earlier this year, Eunice finds she has very few friends and feels lonely for most of her day. Dave meets up with charities which encourage elderly citizens to sing, dance and have fun. Dave’s presenting team muster a squad of volunteers to put a smile back on to Eunice’s face.

Six Wives With Lucy Worsley
9th December - 15th December 2016
Wednesday
BBC1, 21.00
Lucy observes the rise and fall of the infamous Anne Boleyn in Henry’s affections. Henry is still desperate to marry Anne and be rid of his wife Queen Katherine. The Pope is still refusing to annul the royal marriage, but there is a new revolutionary form of Christianity emerging in Europe (what would become Protestantism) - and Henry begins to see how he could become head of his own church in England in order to marry Anne. Lucy is a witness at the wedding of Henry and Anne - where the bride is already pregnant. As Anne is crowned Queen in Westminster Abbey, she prepares to go into confinement for the birth of their baby and Lucy watches as Anne dares to ask Henry to remain faithful to her. Henry reacts angrily and Anne discovers what it is really like to be married to Henry VIII. A baby girl is born - Elizabeth. Meanwhile, Henry has cruelly banned friends and servants of his former Queen Katherine from her deathbed at the damp Kimbolton Castle. As her last wish, Katherine dictates a letter to an illegal visitor, her old lady in waiting. The letter is to Henry - declaring forgiveness and her undying love for him. Despite this last effort, Katherine never receives a reply and Henry does not attend her funeral. Lucy visits Katherine’s tomb at Peterborough Cathedral and places a pomegranate, her royal symbol, on her grave. Back at the royal court, Lucy attends a masked ball where she eavesdrops on Anne and a courtier, Henry Norris. Lucy overhears Anne suggesting that if anything was to happen to the King, Norris could marry her. Soon all of the court have heard of the conversation. Rumours start to circulate that Anne has been having affairs with several men - including her own brother. Lucy witnesses Anne desperately pleading with Henry, but she is soon arrested and brought to the Tower of London. Lucy listens as Anne makes her final declaration before her execution: she denies all charges brought against her. As soon as Anne is dead, Henry marries Jane Seymour. Lucy serves at a dinner in which Jane has an argument with Henry about the destruction of the monasteries. Henry reminds Jane of what happened to his last wife and she does not question her King again. Jane fulfils her most important role as Queen: giving birth to a healthy son, baby Edward. Henry’s joy is overshadowed by grief as Jane dies 12 days later from an infection. By uncovering private moments that were reported by eyewitnesses or recorded in historical documents, this landmark series provides a fresh new perspective on a familiar story.

It is September and nine months after the death of Anne Kneilands the police are no further forward in finding her killer. Detective Muncie is sure he knows the culprit. Even though not part of the investigation he goes to Manuel’s home to try and reason with his father who gave him the alibi he needed to be free of the investigation. Samuel Manuel is uncooperative and angry about Muncie’s accusation. On the 17 September, Muncie hears the news that the Watt family, a mother, daughter and Mrs Watt’s sister had all been shot dead in their beds. Although the modus operandi was different from Manuel’s usual violence, Muncie was immediately concerned this was his doing. Again, although not part of the investigating team, Muncie goes to the Watt house and discovers enough evidence that it was Manuel to take his findings to Inspector Leish, the man in charge.

BBC1, 20.00 Cheryl knows little about her heritage, beyond her sense of herself as a true Geordie. Tracing her roots in the North East, on her dad’s side she discovers a seafaring ancestor and a family tragedy. On her mum’s side, she recovers the story of her long-forgotten great grandfather:a quintessential Tommy in the First World War, who fought in one of the most famous battles on the Western Front.
The Secret Life of the Zoo Channel 4, 20:00 There’s an escape at Chester Zoo in this episode. The Sumatran orangutans have been getting used to new quarters, when keepers see from CCTV that Subis, Tuti, Siska and Indah have gone missing. They find Subis in the roof of the Monsoon Forest: an area that’s strictly off-limits to orangutans. But Subis seems to be enjoying a day out, trying on a fire hydrant cover and some vet’s gloves for size. The keepers must rely on their understanding of the escapees to try to tempt them back inside. Family dynamics are always shifting in Chester’s animal groups. In the meerkat house, the dominant female is facing trouble, from her own daughter. Known as Number 13, the daughter is launching physical attacks on Mum, in a struggle for dominance.

Extraordinary Weddings ITV1, 21.00
Brand new series, Extraordinary Weddings follows the inspirational stories of six couples who, against all the odds and having faced some of life’s toughest challenges, are finally going to be tying the knot and saying ‘I do’. Each episode follows the incredible journey of two couples, from the events that made them unite in the face of adversity, through to the moment their big day arrives and they get to marry their beloved. In this second episode are Will and Amy, from Cheltenham, who were a year into their relationship when Will suffered a bleed on the brain. Thankfully Will survived, however his memory had been badly affected and since his injury he has struggled to retain new short term memories, including when he proposed to Amy. However, refusing to be defeated, fiancee Amy spent hours formulating ways to train Will’s brain, determined that he would remember their big day. The second couple, Karen and Ian, from Scunthorpe, were three years into their relationship when at the age of 46 Karen suffered a stroke, which left her without the full use of voice. Karen developed a condition called aphasia, where she struggles to find the right words to form full sentences. However, with their love as strong as ever, Ian proposed to Karen and worked tirelessly in the hope she’d be able to say her all-important vows on their wedding day.

K9 NEWS
Meet Tiny Linda. They love their walks together, running around and having fun. He is very good off the lead, and on. So there’s no pulling with Tiny, and his recall is great. He is about six years old, and knows that life doesn’t need to be lived in top gear all the time. It’s good to relax and chill.
Do you have a place in your home and heart for this gentle boy? You’ll receive, in return, a loving, loyal and devoted companion. If you would like to meet him, please get in touch with us in any of the ways mentioned below. We’re safe and secure thank you Of course, the ultimate
aim for all of us at K9 is for every one of our dogs to find his or her loving, forever home. However, while they wait patiently for that to happen, K9 refuge is home for our pupsters, and they need to feel safe and secure there. The spate of overnight break-ins recently, with three dogs stolen and, thankfully, returned safely, was devastating for our dogs. In the days after each episode, it was clear they were nervous and unsettled and, just as their lives and routine returned to normal, they were frightened and disrupted all over again. Thankfully, help was at hand from some very kind and generous people. After some amazing fundraising, work to improve security at the kennels has now been completed. Our dogs are now safe in their home behind high fencing and secure gates. Very special thanks for a job well done go to our trusty
workmen: Tony and his dad, Chris; John and Tony; and Karl. Our pupsters say: “Thanks so much guys. It’s good to feel safe”. How to meet all our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-andsecure, forever homes. You can see them all - their stories and pictures - on our website at www.k9tenerife. eu/2015/ Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 102pm. Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming rehomings on Facebook, by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker and also K9 Tenerife.

Harmful to pets! With Christmas just around the corner, please be aware that a lot of Christmas foods are very harmful, or even poisonous, to our four-legged friends.
They include mince pies, Christmas cake, chocolate, Christmas pudding, grapes, raisins, alcohol and peanuts, so please take extra care over the festive season, and keep all those goodies out of harm’s way. Christmas fun Our Christmas event is on 17th December, 3-7pm, in the Plaza in Las Galletas. It will be a fun-filled afternoon for you and your beloved dogs. Father Christmas has promised to make an appearance, to meet the many children who support our events. There will be singing, dancing, children’s workshops, a puppy play area and fun and games for all, so it’s definitely a date for your diary. If you would like to bring a tin of dog food to donate, that would
be greatly appreciated by our many fourlegged friends. Photo competition Please do take part in our Christmas photo competition. Email your favourite Christmas pet pics to teneriffa@aktiontier. org. Poorly singer backed by his fellow artistes
THE Arona, Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club is supporting a worthy charity event on Sunday at the Albatros Bar in Costa del Silencio. It starts at 2pm and is being organised by Pat ‘Scottie’ Wilson and Gary Jay. It will include many local artistes, giving up their time to rally around a fellow artiste, known locally as Greg Stetson, who, tragically, is terminally ill with bowel cancer. All monies raised will be used to help support his wife and two young children to secure their safe accommodation for the future. Don Davies, who is involved in the event, says: “This is a genuine plea for help, so please come and support this family.”
Fayre success for The Lions A SUPERB day was enjoyed by all at San Miguel Lions Club’s annual Christmas Fair last Sunday - a festive event with a difference. That’s because the Lions’ very own Dave G Tracy not only helped with the proceedings in The Dip, Silencio, but also introduced “PLINKO”, a new game. Entertainment was provided by the multitalented Pip Brown, and the fair also featured a barbecue, as well as the usual tombola and craft stalls. The raffle’s stunning first prize of a week’s Holiday Accommodation for four people was won by a Silencio family. And, says Club Secretary Ralph Solomon: “We would like to thank all those who participated, and congratulations to all prize-winners. A list of winners is available in our charity shop, or ask any Lion member. “And, on behalf of San Miguel Lions Club, we thank all those who came along, and all our supporters who helped on the day.”
In the Pink!
The final total is in for Pink Day at Our Place Costa del Silencio, a grand total 5359.77 euros was made, smashing last year’s total by over 1000 euros. Well done to Gordon Slayney, the people who volunteered and came to the day and donated.

Cats Welfare news
Festive dangers During the Christmas period, here in Tenerife, poinsettias are popular house plants, and local councils use them to decorate the verges and roundabouts. They are commonly thought of as being poisonous to cats and kittens because their milky, white sap does contains poisonous chemicals. But they rarely are, though, and their reputation
is greatly exaggerated. Far more worrisome are holiday bouquets containing lilies, holly or mistletoe, and all those brought into the house by holiday guests should be thoroughly inspected. Lilies are florists’ No.1 choice of flower, and just one or two bites of them can result in acute kidney failure in cats. All parts of the plant, including the pollen, are poisonous!Other
Yuletide plants, such as holly (including the berries), mistletoe and rosemary can also be toxic to cats (and dogs). When holly is ingested, it can result in severe gastrointestinal upset, thanks to the spiny leaves and the potentiallytoxic substances they contain. If eaten, most cats (and dogs) lipsmack, drool, and shake their heads

Iceland staff take the biscuit! STAFF at Iceland’s Los Cristianos store have pulled out a genuine Christmas cracker of their own to help underprivileged kids and their families. Customers not in-
terested in the store’s weekly “special offer” of biscuits were asked to consider buying them, to add to the hampers being put together by the Amigos de Gillian Banks charity for the poor.
Sandra Coats, who is involved in the charity, said: “It was a brilliant idea by Iceland staff, who collected no fewer than 50 boxes for us. I’d love to thank them all for their amazing team effort.”
excessively, due to the mechanical injury from the spiny leaves. As for mistletoe, most of us hang it high enough so it’s out of reach of our pets, but it can also be toxic if ingested. If eaten in large amounts, collapse, hypertension (high blood pressure), ataxia (walking drunk), seizures and death can occur. Keep your pets safe this holiday season, and think carefully about the plants and flowers you have in your home. Leukaemia and FelineAids-positive cats Healthy infected cats may remain apparently unaffected by the virus for a long time, given good supportive care, and prompt attention to medical problems. We find it incredibly difficult to find them homes, even though these cats have so much love to give. They need to be either an only cat, or just kept with other positive cats. If you have other animals, including dogs, that’s not a problem, because these diseases
are not transferable between species. Here’s Lucy! Please consider giving Lucy a home. She is a stunningly-beautiful, grey-and-white female. She’s obviously been a house-cat because she’s so friendly. She’s FelineAids positive, and will make an excellent companion. She has been spayed, and will be microchipped and given her first year’s vaccinations.Whether you’re looking for an adult cat or a kitten, please ring or Whatsapp Maria on 646629129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), message us on Facebook or contact us on our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com. something for everyone. Gucci, Coast, Monsoon and Yves Saint Laurent are just some of the names available. THE art of cooking Brussels sprouts is to be admired, but one expert has been left absolutely steaming at the thought of them being … boiled! “Oh, no,” spouts Matthew Rawson, chairman of the Brassica Growers Association. “Sprouts must be steamed, stirfried or micro-waved to retain flavour, and boiling them simply ruins their image. Mr Rawson’s views will prove controversial in many households, in which the traditional boiling technique has always been employed. The much-maligned green veg, a Christmasdinner favourite, will taste all the better if his methods are adopted, he believes. He has even criticised cooks who cut a small cross in the base of a sprout, which makes the vegetable “soggy and rubbish”. Mr Rawson told The Sunday Telegraph:
“Boiling them was, traditionally, the way of doing it. But putting the cross in introduces too much water, and people who do that have ruined the Brussels sprout.” Mr Rawson, who farms in Yorkshire, added: “People are now learning that it is a very versatile vegetable. The big ones lend themselves well to a stir-fry.” In fact, they are now used in new recipes like Brussels with pancetta and chestnuts or pistachio and pomegranate sprout salad. The humble sprout’s rise in popularity is expected to continue and follow the trend set by similar greens, spinach and kale, which have become “super foods”. Mr Rawson has worked with YouTube cooking star Aaron Craze to set up the website loveyourgreens.co.uk But will you love the stir-fried sprout on 25th December?

10 YEARS … AND
COUNTING!
By Carl from Robot
Over 10 years have passed since I started writing this column. That’s 51 columns a year, which means I’ve written a total of over 500. Every week, I have to think of something different.
To me, it’s part of my job and something I love to do, although it can be difficult to conjure up a new topic, week in and week out. I’ve covered colouring, styling, products, hairups and hair condition, to name but a few. Your response is what makes me carry on. I know I can sometimes be critical and sarcastic, but it’s because I have a passion for what I do. Hairdressing is still one of the great professions to be in. Every year, it still draws in the masses, who want to become stylists, and all in the name of giving
you the hair look you want. Over the years, there have been many times when I have been stuck, when it came to what I put in the Canarian Weekly. But my clients never fail to inspire me, and are always giving me a quote I can use, or an idea about a subject. So, thank you to all who have listened to me warble on in the name of hairdressing, and to all of you who regularly turn to this paper, to keep up-to-date on the needs of your hair. Here’s to another 10 years of styling Tenerife, in the best way I know.
By Val Sainsbury WE are all aware that most sugary drinks are harmful, and partly responsible for the rise in the number of people who are obese.
Now, though, a draft legislation has been published by the UK government to introduce a tax on these drinks, which will come into effect from
Rule Britiania Fashionistas By Carl Pattison
The new, revamped British Fashion Awards took place on Monday, 5th December in the Royal Albert Hall, London, and all the fashionistas were present and correct.
From models to designers, and “A”-list celebs to presenters and actors, a sense of glamour had returned to London, for one night. Up for best model, Gigi Hadid won the coveted crown in an offthe-shoulder Versace jumpsuit, in metallic silver and pink. Jean Paul Gaultier was on hand, interviewing the stars in his own, cheeky way. Present among the glitterati were Lady
Gaga, Kate Moss and Stella McCartney, who dressed Karlie Kloss as best-model contender. Hosted by Swarovski, the evening dazzled the crowds at the VIP dinner-and- drinks event. Categories included Menswear and Womenswear, which were only open to Brits, but “Best Accessories” was open to Internationals. New categories were Urban Luxury Brand and Ready to Wear. Alexander McQueen won Best British Designer, and the “Best Accessories” award went to Alessandro Michele, for Gucci. Overall, the night was an amazing success. It brought attention to London, one of the world’s leading fashion capitals, proving that the UK is producing some of the world’s greatest fashions - and inspirational designers.
April 2018. There will be two bands: one for soft drinks with more than 5gm of sugar per 100ml, and a higher one for drinks with more than 8gm per 100ml. Ministers hope it will help tackle the nation’s obesity problem, and so many companies, who have already begun cutting down the sugar in their drinks. Pure fruit juices will be exempt, but health officials stress that people should limit consumption to no more than 150ml per day. Likewise, sugary milkshakes and yogurt drinks will also be excluded. Ministers were very concerned that teenagers, particularly girls, were not getting enough calcium, so taxing these drinks might be counterproductive. And the government expects the levy to raise £520m in the first year. The Office for Budget Responsibility estimates the levy could add between 18-24p to the price of a litre of fizzy drink, if
the full cost is passed on to the consumer. This amounts to an extra 6p on a regular can of Fanta and Sprite, and an extra 8p on a regular can of Coca-Cola, Pepsi and Irn-Bru. Health campaigners have, broadly, welcomed the initiative. Dr Max Davie, of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, said: “We are very pleased to see the government moving forward with this draft legislation. “The sugary drinks affected by this tax have no nutritional benefit, and often contain levels of sugar that are above a child’s daily, recommended limit. “These drinks are a major contributor to the high sugar intakes of children, particularly teenagers, and we are in no doubt that they are, in part, contributing to this country’s obesity crisis.” Cancer Research UK estimates that a 20% tax on sugary drinks could prevent 3.7 million cases of obesity over the next decade, something the soft-drinks industry rejects. Gavin Partington, of the British Soft Drinks Association, said: “There is no evidence, worldwide, that taxes of this sort reduce obesity. It is ironic that soft drinks are being singled out for tax, when we’ve led the way in reducing sugar intake, down over 17% since 2012. “We’re also the only category to have set a 20% calorie reduction target for 2020.”

Kirk Readings
Jungle fever … in Majorca!
Interview by Val Sainsbury LAST Sunday saw the finale of this year’s I’m A Celebrity, and many of us will miss laughing at the contestants, struggling to eat all manner of critters, as well as the mostintimate parts of animals! But Oasis Fm DJ Kirk Readings certainly wasn’t planning his own version of a Bushtucker trial when, as an 18-yearold working in Majorca, he placed his regular, weekly order of a chicken baguette in a cafe. “At the time, I didn’t speak any Spanish,” he recalled. “I was an animator in an allinclusive hotel, and, when the children won any games, they would be given food as a prize.” Unfortunately for Kirk, the young Spanish hotel worker he’d asked to organise the prizes, mischievously gave him some wrong information. “You must speak to me in Spanish,” he said to Kirk, in broken English. “Chicken nuggets are nuggets de pollo, but a chicken baguette is un baguette de polla. For a baguette, it is a lady chicken.” Kirk added: “Each week, I had to travel from the north to the south of Majorca to do a show. I always went into Subway when I was there, and asked for un baguette de polla grande. I felt really fluent! “The guy who worked there always looked
at me as though I were stupid. After six months of this routine, a friend came along and heard me placing my order. “What are you doing?” he asked in horror. “What do you think you’re ordering, you fool!” For those readers who may not know, polla is the slang word used to describe just about the most important part of a man’s body! So, unbeknown to Kirk, and every Wednesday for six months, he had been asking for a foot-long, male appendage, with mayonnaise, and all in a soft roll! Born in the Welsh town of Haverfordwest, 30-year-old Kirk now lives in Tenerife with his wife, Sarah. They are the proud parents of eight-yearold triplets, comprising identical sons Niall and Kristian, and daughter Lily-May. They were born the day before Kirk’s 22nd birthday. Looking back, he said: “When I was 17, I came here on holiday with two friends, and didn’t go home! “I was at college studying for my A levels, and the assumption was that I would do really well, but I didn’t put any work into it. “After the first year, I knew how badly the exams had gone, so I booked a holiday. I was hoping not to go back home - and I didn’t!” He added: “After a year here I went to Majorca. I got a job as an animator in a hotel, and it was there that I met Sarah, who was on holiday. In November 2004, when the season ended, I went back to the UK. “Sarah and I bought a house in Kidderminster in the Midlands, and
we stayed in the UK until 2007, the year we married. The children were born the following year. “They were eight weeks premature, and struggled with their breathing. They all had physiotherapy, and the boys, in particular, had really bad chests. “So, at least once a week, we went back and forth to Worcester General Hospital, where they were born.” The family then moved to Wales, which was the worst decision ever. It wasn’t the air quality that was making them poorly, but the damp weather. “So, in 2010, I booked a holiday for us all in Tenerife,” explained Kirk. Wales were playing Scotland at rugby while we were here. “I told Sarah I was going out to watch the match, but, secretly, I met up with a friend to discuss a job in animation. “When we returned to the UK, I discovered that my cousin needed a house to rent so we offered ours, and we were back here within four weeks! “After a year as an animator, I sang with Marc Craig in The Wildboyz. One of the band members had left, so I replaced him. After that, I started a Frank Sinatra tribute act, ‘To be Frank’.” In 2013, the family returned to the UK for
the children to continue their education. They lived in Cornwall, where Kirk had what he refers to as a “real” job - a pensions adviser. “From a material aspect, it was all good,” he said, “but I was travelling for a huge amount of the time.” So they returned here permanently, in March of this year. Everything the couple were told that the triplets wouldn’t be able to achieve, they have! They are excellent swimmers, and Niall came second in an inter-county funrun, back in Cornwall. “They’re all happy and healthy, and love Tenerife,” he said with a smile. Kirk started working at Oasis Fm in October, and is on air every Wednesday, from 3-6pm. “We’ve got a broad spectrum of listeners on Oasis, and have to attain a good level of communication with everybody,” he said. Apart from being on air, he also comperes at different venues, several nights a week. Kirk loves his work, and his big ambition is to learn how to fly helicopters. “My father, Peter, is the inspiration for that,” he said. “He decided, at the age of 49, that he was going to fly a plane. He did just that - and now he’s got his licence!”
Snow White dwarfs them all EIRWEN, Kirk’s 92-year-old grandmother, sang as a little girl at The Urdd Eisteddfod, an annual Welshlanguage youth festival of literature, music and performing arts.
She listens to his show, avidly, and recently made a request for a Johnny Mathis hit! “Her name means Snow White,” said Kirk, proudly, “and she is the most incredible woman in the world.”

Slow start does for Rewired THEY say it’s not how you start but how you finish, and that is often the case in the Direct Telecom pool league. Defending champions and current leaders Gaffers A always make a flying start, and there is little doubt that this gives them a massive advantage. They repeated the trick on Tuesday night against a dogged Rewind Rewired side, who made of a match of it in the end. Bangkok Kev, Neil, Lee and then Top Sixty Dave took frames for Gaffers for a first-set clean-sweep. With Gaffers keeping the same line-up as usual, they were soon 6-0 to the good. At this point some sides fear the worst because there is nothing like being whitewashed. So there was relief when Roger put a frame on the board. Tony then chinned TSD, and, when Tim beat Neil, there was a whiff of a famous comeback. But 6-3 was as good as it got for Rewired as Gaffers regrouped and took the last three frames. Talking of Gaffers and whitewashes, their B team managed it at home against Terrace Roosters, who are on an awful run. And there were no excuses. Roosters had a full-strength roster, but they were blown away by the young guns and Aircon Graham. A quick glance at the table shows how funny a season it is. The 12-0 win means that Gaffers B, in 11th place, have the exact same record as secondplace Palms A. The 12-point difference tells the story of how hot
and cold Gaffers B can be. But on their night, they can beat anyone. If they can add some consistency to undoubted talent, they should be top six next season. With the second, third and fourth not in action Dreamers A had the chance to get back in the mix for the silver medal. They faced a local derby with Bluebell A and made hard work of beating the basement boys. Al gave Bluebell the lead, only for The Fluke to level. George put the hosts ahead again, but it was short-lived. Tommy, back from his hols in Asia over the last few weeks and now, fully-refreshed, returned with a bang. First Ian and then Al tasted defeat. Steve kept the Dreamers’ ball rolling and, at 4-2, they should have closed the game off. But Bluebell had other ideas. George took two of the next three frames to make it close. Then Al levelled. Suddenly, Bluebell were in with a real chance of an overdue win, but it didn’t last. The Fluke got back in the winning habit, and Mark T snatched frame 12 to give Dreamers the points. Just! There was another preChristmas cracker in Silencio as Exiles hosted Palms B Elite. The visitors had captain Barry back in the fold, and he inspired them to a tight win. It didn’t look on the cards early on as Exiles went 3-2 up. They were smoking … literally! This may have left its mark as Palms reeled off three frames to go 5-3 up. This was soon 5-4 when Ben beat Danny.

Shammy, once an Exiles stalwart, showed table knowledge to make it 6-4. But back came Exiles as Tel eased past Graeme. This set up a final-frame decider, won by Wayne to bring the points back to Torviscas. Elsewhere, Terrace Bantams, at home against Rewind A, were looking to extend their recent winning run to six games. Adi, up first against Pete, was in control until his opponent put together a slick finish, only to miss an easy black. This let the Bantams captain back in, and he calmly slotted away the black. But in went the white as well and the visitors were ahead. Bantams came back, though, with three in a row to lead, until John got one back for Rewind A as he overcame jet-lag to make it 3-2. However, the same pattern was then repeated as the home side led 6-2. Victory was in sight, but John again threw a spanner in the works to give his side a slim chance. But captain Wilf picked the wrong shot in his game, meaning Pete

could drop in the black to leave the Bantams home and hosed. But the final 9-3 scoreline was a little hard on Wilf’s United Nations. There were just four Division Two matches on Tuesday, but they went a little way to sorting out the bun-fight that is the promotion charge. Picassos, trying to slip the pack, had a crucial win at Treehouse. But boy, they were made to work hard for the three points. Treehouse B have been there for the beer this season, but not this time. They fancied the upset and were soon 3-0 up as Picassos appeared to be all over the place. However, Brian took frame four, and, with Stevie Ray next, the leaders were confident of getting it back to 3-2. But Shaun hadn’t read the script and clinched his second frame of the night. Mark did the same and at 5-1 there was some real whooping in the Treehouse. Alas, reality soon set in for Treehouse as Picassos showed they are top for a reason. Mark started the charge, and when Wayne won back-

Paul and Mark got them in front to set up Roy to beat Trev and break Treehouse hearts, claiming an amazing 7-5 win. James Hammers C, who still have title ambitions, are still playing catch-up after being held by last year’s Division Two champs, The Crown. There is not much between the two sides on paper, and so it proved, the draw being a fair result. It was more clear-cut in Torviscas as Splash Bar got their first win in six weeks. They were too good for a Hoppys side who themselves haven’t won since midSeptember. And keep an eye out for Palms Rebels. They are finding a head of steam, making it backto-back wins at home against Exiles B. The 7-5 win gives them a chance
of a top-six finish. Also this week, the draw was made for the quarter-finals of the PJ Electrical & Building Services Cup and Plate. The plum tie sees Division One’s top two locking horns. Gaffers A haven’t lost all season, but they were a little lucky to draw with Palms A a few weeks ago, so the visitors will fancy their chances. There is an all-Division Two clash as Palms Rebels host James Hammers C, while Yates Bar have home advantage on Exiles A. In the Plate, we will see how close Picassos are to top-flight standard when they travel to Dreamers A, and Phoenix Potters have a tricky tie at Hoppys. Talking of Phoenix Potters, they hosted James Hammers C in the traditional Werthers Cup match, and a fun night was had by all … as the picture shows!

It's ding-dong Darren!
IT'S that time of year when we hear the sleigh bells ringing, and those lords come leaping. And maybe the Emerald Lounge team did a bit of leaping as they produced an amazing comeback at the Waterfall last Friday. Having lost the first four points, Darren fired in his first maximum to inspire his team to claim the last four and steal a remarkable draw. Five gold rings for you sir! But the significant Second Division result came at Picassos, who were beaten heavily by Palms Pool Bar. Dennis and his side now sit just a point behind Picassos with three games in hand of leaders Tavern, who had to go all the way to the trebles to beat Pas O Nadas B. We'll know more about Palms Pool Bar after they have faced The Tavern in their next match. And more important results came in Division 1, with Pas O Nadas A and Gaffers, two of the fancied sides, squaring
up. A close match followed which was just edged 5-3 by home side Nadas. The second and thirdplaced teams battled it out at The Crown, where Scruffy Macs were in fine form, dispatching Spear Chuckers 6-2. Phoenix faced Boothen for the second week running, and put seven past them - for the second week running! Elsewhere, The Pub put six past Sandys Reborn, while a relegation battle saw Playboys notch up their second victory of the campaign, against Palms Sports Bar. This week's darting action takes us back to Canarian Weekly's team handicap, knockout competition, as we enter the quarter-final stages. Some interesting ties came out of the hat, and some hefty handicaps will have to be dealt with; none more so than Scruffy Macs' 368-pointer against Marilyns A. Good luck to all!

Dodgy tennis events Tenerife left flat-footed serving up a real fix Basketball
FATE has a strange sense of humour. Iberostar Tenerife had just waved goodbye to injury stand-in Carl English when captain Nico Richotti fractured his knee in training, leaving the squad depleted and defeated 71-59 at Zaragoza. But coach Txus Vidorreta didn’t use the skipper’s absence as an excuse, pointing instead to a disastrous 21-4, third-quarter, loss, which turned the game around. Aaron Doornekamp was his usual, consistent self with 15 points, and Marius Grigonis and Javier Beiran were also in good form with 12 points apiece. But the squad were scratching around in single figures after their efforts.
The European League brings out the best in the squad, and, on Wednesday, they completed the double over Zagreb’s KK Cibona with a 106-84 home win in La Laguna. It was pretty comfortable for the yellows, the third quarter nailing it with a 36-19 advantage. Davin White led the way on 21 points, followed closely by Tim Abromaitis with 16. The club management have moved quickly to bring in an extra player
to cover for injured Richotti. Taqwa Pinero (originally known as Taquen Dean) was announced as the new man after the European game. The 33-year-old guard, born in New Jersey, started out with the University of Louisville. He has played for several teams in the Spanish League, such as Valencia and Murcia, his most recent club. The well-travelled player even had a spell playing in the Iran League!
SPANISH tennis is embroiled in a matchfixing ring, with 34 people arrested by the Guardia Civil, suspected of rigging games to win online bets. Six are either lowly, world-ranked professionals or rated between 30-300 in Spain. Officers swooped mainly on events in Madrid and Sevilla, where the ring-leaders, said to have raked in 500m euros, are based. Others were detained in several other cities, including Barcelona. The group’s plan was to arrange for a semiprofessional player to get in touch with full-timers operating on national and
international circuits. This intermediary would arrange for players to lose a particular set, enabling members of the ring to accumulate winnings via online-betting portals … the obliging players also being paid off. Tennis players involved were aged between 1730, although a Guardia Civil spokesperson: “The younger ones were not aware of what they were doing.” The intermediaries were normally training partners, or had competed against the targeted players. In some cases, they even deceived their opponents once the match was over by
paying them much less than the agreed sum. Once a player agreed to throw a match or set, members of the ring would be informed via an instant-messaging group. At least 17 tournaments, held in Sevilla, Huelva, Tarragona, Madrid and Porto (Portugal), were targeted. If a player did not agree, he/she would be offered a larger cut of the winnings. If this failed, the ringleaders would step in. The investigation was launched after the Guardia Civil had been tipped-off by the international Tennis Integrity Unit. Further arrests have not been ruled out.

They’re off… too early!
By Colin Kirby
IT’S got to be three, and everyone knows that, whether it be blind mice, coins in a fountain, or even a meaningful, winning run of football!
Sadly, Tenerife pulled up on the brink again after two straight wins. A home victory against Huesca would have put them in a promotion play-off spot. But they were fortunate to hold on to a point after a blistering start. Tenerife looked so impressive for the first 25 minutes, spraying the ball around up front and making plenty of chances. Iñaki sneaked in down
CD Tenerife 1 Huesca 1 the left for a first-minute attempt, and then it was Amath, cutting in from the right and picking out Aitor Sanz for an early lead. Amath, always looking threatening up front with his pace, set up Suso, who toyed with defender Lopez. But keeper Jimenez deflected his shot past the post. Cristo Gonzalez was again lively, and his long strike wasn’t far off the target. Huesca, just above Tenerife in the league, weren’t a bad side and were keen to make a game of it. Dani Hernandez was sharp in the home goal, smothering a low shot at the post.
Ferreiro, a nippy Huesca forward, had to be watched constantly. Thankfully, Alberto, who has established himself at the heart of the Tenerife defence, had a superb game, cutting out danger with strength, authority, and perfect timing. But the referee was starting to make a nuisance of himself with bizarre calls, and how he managed to book Marc Crosas when he was on the receiving end of a foul was a complete mystery. It would be easy to blame poor officiating for the slow winddown of Tenerife´s performance. But, in reality, they are still a few strong, creative
players short of a possible promotion side. Maybe the January transfer window will add the missing pieces, but, in the meantime, they will be glad of resolute defending and the commanding play of Hernandez. Alberto showed his worth a few minutes into the second half, ushering Vadillo calmly away from his raid on goal. But the spark simply wasn’t there for Tenerife, and even captain Suso was subdued. They should have put more pressure on the visiting keeper, who strayed far out of his area constantly and was unconvincing with
Marino face testing times
his decision-making. Ferreiro, pick of Huesca’s forwards, put the ball in the net at one stage, but the ref called offside correctly. Aaron came on for Cristo and gave the team more attacking options out wide. And the Huesca keeper had another mad moment, rushing out to stop Suso. It was the captain’s last touch before he made way for Omar, who immediately forced the keeper into saving with his legs. With five minutes left, Huesca tried another raid down their left, and a speculative cross flew over the heads of defenders and attackers before falling kindly for
Ladies’ football
Top teams fight back FOOTBALL is sometimes about determination, as much as pure skill, and Tenerife´s two teams in Spain´s Premier ladies league both dug deep last weekend to get a share of the spoils. Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife, who were at Valencia, fought back to finish with a 2-2 draw in an evenly-matched encounter. Ayano fired them ahead after five minutes, but the home side levelled a few minutes later through
San Mateo 1 CD Marino 1 By Colin Kirby ONE point from the last four games has put a big dent in CD Marino’s season. They looked to have steadied the
ship with a hard-fought draw at San Mateo last Saturday, but lost their game in hand on Tuesday in a 3-1 defeat at Santa Ursula.
They took the lead after 73 minutes in Gran Canaria through Lolo Armario, but it didn’t last long because Jacobo equalised
11 minutes later. Yet the point was a good reward from a tricky away trip … and should have been something to build on.
Santa Ursula 3 CD Marino 1 THIS clash, in the North of Tenerife, was postponed in early November because of a rain-drenched pitch. But Tuesday’s public holiday gave Marino a chance to turn the missed game into
valuable points. Sadly, it didn’t work out that way. The hosts took the lead via Nau Hernandez after 30 minutes, and that´s how it stayed until the second half. Marino made three
changes in an attempt to chase the game, and there was a quick reward when Fran Delgado struck a rocket of a goal from 25 metres. But Santa Ursula finished strongly, with Miguel scoring after
88 minutes and Arturo adding a third just before the final whistle. CD Marino are back in home action on Sunday at noon, with Union Puerto del Rosraio visiting their Playa de Las Americas stadium.
Vera, who snapped up the equaliser. And the away side nearly scored a winner, Melero smashing the ball shot against the underside of the bar. Four minutes of injury time brought a couple of chances for Tenerife. Omar fed the ball to Amath in front of goal. But, somehow, he stroked the ball past the post. In the dying seconds, Aaron tried to round the keeper, who got his hands to the ball just in time. That’s two more home points dropped, and Tenerife are in 10th place, with leaders Levante away tomorrow (Saturday). Oh dear!
Mari Paz, and pulled ahead before half-time with a Zorzona goal. But Tenerife ensured a share of the spoils to stay in fifth place, thanks to Pisco’s equaliser. Back in Tenerife, bottom-placed Tacuense, from Santa Cruz, welcomed new coach Fanfi Herrera with a hard fought 1-1 draw against Zaragoza. Tania put them back on level terms a few minutes after the visitors had taken the lead.
