Owners’ mortgage bonanza Continued from Front Several banks, including Sabadell/Solbank, Caixabank, BBVA and Banco Popular, were deemed to have been over-charging mortgage interest for years under their “Clausula Suelo” (floor clause). Now, collectively, they are facing a mighty 7.5bn-euro pay-out. This was a collaborative scheme between banks, which blocked interest rates from falling below a certain figure. The ruse, though not illegal at the time, has been termed “abusive” and on Wednesday, the ECJ ruled in favour of those who had been given a controversial Clausula Suelo mortgage without knowing. The affected banks were, initially, ordered to repay the excessive sums (plus interest) made by home-owners for a period of exactly three years, dating back to the Supreme Court’s initial judgement of 9th May 2013. It meant that those with longer-running mortgages could not extend the repayments further back. That seemed unfair, and many mortgagors and legal experts felt so, arguing that the reclaim should go right back. Their thinking was mirrored in the law courts, and the ECJ has now taken into account a report from the European Commission, stating that there should be full repayment, from the start of the mortgage. The 40-plus banks involved have been wriggling every which way for many months to save their skins, but to no avail.

If you are uncertain about which type of mortgage you have - one based solely on the Euribor (the official European bank rate), Fixed, Variable or Clausula Suelo - just ask your bank for clarification. The key to a claim is, obviously, the controversial Clausula Suelo mortgage. If, in recent months, you have already been contacted by your bank, offering an enticinglylow, fixed-rate interest on your mortgage, it tells you of the banks’ desperation, trying to hang on to all the extra euros you’ve already paid them since signing the mortgage contract. Myra Cecilia, who represents the Citizens Advice Bureau, Spain, said: “We’ve known for a while that a certain bank has been contacting its homeowner clients and offering to remove the clause if they sign for a fixed-rate mortgage - and sign away their rights to make claims for repayments of the excess they’ve already paid.” And a Canarian Weekly reader told us of her surprise at receiving a phone call in April from her bank manager - they’ve never even met offering a near-2%, fixed-rate drop in her mortgage. And, he stressed, it would save her all of 25 euros a month! His call was followed up, almost immediately, by an email spelling out the deal in full, and saying this bargain offer was valid until the end of the month only - and that there was no need for her to attend the notary office. Our reader, who has

since received another communication from her bank, mentioned it to a neighbour, who said he’d heard about the Clausula Suelo. As many as three million people in Spain could be affected - and of them, who

knows how many in Tenerife? Ms Cecilia said: “Even if they do sign a disclaimer, lawyers with expertise in this field say that if a letter of agreement has been signed with the bank for the fixed rate and/or giving up your right to claim, it will

probably be considered null and void by the courts.” As a footnote, it is interesting to learn that shares in all four banks mentioned earlier dropped around 11% following Wednesday’s great news for mortgagors.

UNDERSTANDING THE LAW OF THE CLAUSULA SUELO RULING

By Mariano Zunino Siri IN May we were expecting the decision of the European Court in relation to the retroactivity of the nullification of the “floor clause” which was supposed to be published on the 21st December 2016. We may recall that the Supreme Court of Spain had said that the effects of the nullification could only be turned back up to 9th May 2013, leaving aside those instalments paid before that date. But on Wednesday the European Court delivered and has ruled that the “floor clause” can now be claimed back to the start of the mortgage. I will now clarify what this means from a legal point of view. WHAT IS FLOOR CLAUSE? It is a clause stated in Mortgage Loan Deeds, which establishes a minimum payment in mortgage instalments although the interests agreed with the bank are lower. In general, mortgage loans subscribed in Spain have an interest based on a reference rate, such as Euribor . Therefore, the floor clause sets a minimum percentage to be charged by the bank. LEGALITY OF THE FLOOR CLAUSE In principle, these types of clauses are not in breach of law, unless they are abusive, or when the bank does not inform about the existence of such clauses in the loan. HOW TO IDENTIFY IT The floor clause is identified in the Mortgage Deed under titles like “limits to

the application of variable interest” or “floating rate”, and within that section states that the interest may never be less than a certain percentage. HOW TO ACT ON A FLOOR CLAUSE Firstly, send a letter to the bank branch asking for nullification of the abusive floor clause. If possible have proof of reception of the letter, so it is advisable to make the bank to seal a copy of it and if the entity refuses, send a burofax. Secondly, if there is no reply, present an application complaint to the bank. In some cases this can be done online, using a form addressed to the Customer Services Office. Indicate that you have not received a response to your request regarding removal of floor clause. Thirdly, if still no response, address a complaint to the Bank of Spain reporting all proceedings. If there is still no sign of resolution in this way, sue the bank. WHAT DOES JURISPRUDENCE SAY? There are several judgments that have nullified the floor clause, including the Supreme Court judgment of 9 May 2013. However, in February 2015, the said Court ruled that the condemned banks should return retroactively only the interests charged from the date of its first judgment, ie from 9 May 2013. This means, the retroactive limit was fixed in such date and cannot be claimed back

beyond this date. The main question is not the nullification of the cláusula suelo (floor clause) but its retroactivity. The matter of limiting the retroactivity of the nullity of the floor clause has been questioned before the European Court, in order to determine whether it is possible, or not, to limit the annulment to a date after the signature of the mortgage loan (contracts signed before 9 May 2013) which could be incompatible with Directive 93/13 / EEC of 5 April 1993 .”. THE EUROPEAN COURT DECISION The European Court in judgement of 21 Decembrer 2016 basically says that the national jurisprudence that limits in time, the effect of an abusive clause in consumer contracts, is in breach with Council Directive 93/13. Consequently, the floor clause is null and void and the refunding of the monies irregulary charged can be claimed from the very beginning with no time limit. The ruling means a victory to those clients that have denounced mortgage abuses, and the European Commission were in favour of the customers. The banks, the Bank of Spain, as well as the Supreme Court has been defeated. Those ones that were thinking of suing the bank to claim full nullification of the floor clause, are now free to go to Court and get a favourable judgment held up by the European Court.

Vargas suspect El Rubio admits: ‘I had to make him disappear’ THE mysterious disappearance of seven-year-old Yeremi Vargas, from near his Gran Canaria home nearly 10 years ago, may have been solved.

Antonio Ojeda, main police suspect in what they believe to be the boy’s murder, and serving time in a Gran Canaria prison, confessed to his cellmate that he made Yeremi “disappear”. In the cell-mate’s statement, Ojeda, known also as “El Rubio”, was said to have broken down in the Juan Grande prison cell after being found guilty of sexually abusing another child in 2012, and sentenced to five years His cell-mate, referring to Yeremi, asked him what had happened to the other child. “El Rubio” admitted something he had never declared in any Police reports, saying: “With the

other child, it got out of hand. He ran from me and I had to make him disappear.” It is the first time Ojeda has ever implicated himself directly in the Yeremi mystery. So far, the only private confessions he has made to other prisoners have merely indicated some degree of collateral knowledge about what happened on 10th March 2007. Guardia Civil reports states that Ojeda told conflicting stories to a cellmate in Algeciras Penitentiary Centre, Botafue go, Cadiz. First, he said he saw a dark-haired woman drag the boy

by the a r m into a w h i t e S e a t Toledo car, driven by a man.

Days later, he changed his story and implicated an old neighbour of his, known by the nickname “Tani”, saying: “The boy did not suffer; the boy was dead when he arrived.” He then said he had seen

the child’s lifeless body in his neighbour’s vehicle, and how he incinerated the corpse using wood and a mattress,. But Tani made a declaration before a judge last week, relating the same testimony he told the Guardia Civil months before. On the day of the events, he said he was working with his brother on a building site in Telde, Gran Canarias. His alibi was checked by the Guardia Civil during their investigation, and the construction company owner also confirmed his alibi before the judge. Among the remaining witnesses is Ojeda’s former partner, who told the Guardia Civil that she had “never seen anything that made her suspect that he was sexually attracted to children”. Ojeda’s cellmate from the Botafuego Penitentiary Centre will declare by video conference when the court case resumes next month.

Spain wants to finish work at 6pm every day THE Spanish Government is proposing a crossparty pact to work towards ending the working day at 6pm. But it will almost certainly be given short-shrift by Socialist party PSOE.

Following an appearance before a Congressional commission, Employment Minister Fátima Báñez told reporters: “Somebody has to take the first step, so I am asking business associations and labour unions for their support.” Her proposals, the latest instalment in a long-running, national discussion on working hours, which are seen by many as outdated and family-unfriendly, were outlined in the Popular Party’s election programme for the June 26th elections. They would require the support of labour unions and employers: at present, collective-bargaining agreements mean that the country’s 40hour week is flexible in that

workers can put in more hours during a certain period, making up for them at a later date. Báñez said the time had come to address the issue of improving the “quality” of employment. The Employment Minister also said that rationalising Spain’s working day would also require addressing the issue of returning the country to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), as it previously was, before Franco changed it to fall in-line with Hitler’s Nazi Germany regime. Curiously, although onethird of Spain’s land mass lies

within GMT, it is actually on Central European Time. Báñez accepted that moving Spain toward a more compact working day would mean difficulties for smaller businesses. “Companies in some sectors, and particularly small enterprises, would have to negotiate models to make this possible,” she said. Many Spaniards still spend a long time in their workplace, compared with their European neighbours. They arrive early and take a long, enforced, lunch-break, before returning to work until 8pm or beyond.

Báñez, apart from talking about rationalising the working day, also mentioned the need for more flexible working hours, which could also include working from home. The pact, signed with emerging centre-right party Ciudadanos in the summer, also included proposals to extend paternity leave to four weeks. But the PSOE (Socialist party) spokesman on the Congressional Employment Commission dismissed Báñez’s proposals as a “joke”. “There is nothing wrong with talking about balance

between work and personal life,” he said. But he stressed that Spain faced more pressing problems, such as the 4.9 million people without work, totalling 19% of the working population. And the country’s rate of temporary and shortterm working contracts, which is the highest in the EU. Temporary work has grown since 2006. Contracts lasting a week or less made up 14.7% of all those signed in 2006. The following year, that proportion grew to 15.1%, and it has continued to rise ever since. Last year, the figure for Social Security affiliations tied to contracts lasting less than a week was 24.4%. But Báñez said there had been a 3.24% increase in the number of people signing up to the Social Security system. She added that the time had come to address the issue of improving the “quality” of employment, which included job stability, “better salaries” after several years of lower wages in real terms, and work-life balance.

Senior volunteers get a big pat on the back

THE first regional convention of senior volunteers in the Canaries has been staged over two days at Costa Adeje Tourism Development Centre (CDTCA).

Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Isabel Mena Alonso, Regional Deputy Minister for Social Politics, congratulated those present for their work. They also helped to dish out certificates to the various voluntary associations in the

Canaries, together with the two provincial organisations, AMAVITE (Tenerife) and AVINGRAN (Gran Canaria). Mayor Fraga said that one Adeje theme was that “you only get out of happiness what you put in”. He added: “Here in Adeje, we are working to make this a place for everyone. We have to continue to work to improve the quality of life for all, and, of course, the senior citizens, who are living witnesses to our history. “We are very happy at the results of this event, which have been the culmination of the work of representatives

from our seven islands. You are active, creative, senior citizens, who remind us of the importance of caring for each other.”. Isabel Mena told the audience they were a fine example for the Canary Islands. She also mentioned the dedicated number for those suffering loneliness (900 707 020), as well as the intergenerational programmes. “Other projects are designed to improve the quality of life of the archipelago’s older citizens,” she added. “It allows them present their ideas and interests in changing and improving things.”

Angry owners fight back with denuncia

SIX apartment owners in the Las Americas Altamar complex have denounced the Community Administrator for, allegedly, getting their water and electricity supplies cut off.

The owners believe their maintenance man, said to be instructed by the Administrator has blocked their water meters with a cork bung on numerous occasions, and taken out electric fuses to their apartments. Both utilities are stored in a private area, with access available to owners or the maintenance man only. In a police report, one owner wrote that the maintenance man said: “You can reconnect the water and electric as many times as you want - I will just keep cutting it off.” Ana Franchy, an Altamar property owner, says the Administrator is behaving in such a manner because various complex owners do not agree with her being their Administrator, or her husband being Community President.

El Gordo fills ‘em up FANCY popping into a petrol station and picking up a big win in the world’s biggest lottery? That has proved to be the winning formula for the fourth year running in Granadilla, where shares of the second prize on El Gordo, Spain’s Christmas Lottery, were sold.

A full series number of ticket 04536 carried a 1,250,000-euro prize from the mammoth pot - a total of 2.4 billion euros was spent on lottery tickets - and the lucky Granadilla de Abona filling station, at Km54, sold several of the decimos (part of 10 in a series) which each carry a 125,000 euros prize. The number 66.613 was unveiled as the winning series, with the 10 tickets each worth 4m euros. And first indications are that a Madrid person has collected a whopping 40m euros! When we went to press, Tenerife had eight winners

of 125,000 euros, including people in Las Galletas and Playa San Juan. Much of Tenerife came to a standstill as everyone sought out a TV or radio to see if their lives were about to change. All eyes were on Madrid yesterday (Thursday) morning from 8-11am, as the elaborate draw ceremony took place in the Teatro Real. The winning numbers were

sung, as usual, by children from San Lidefonso School in a tradition that dates back to 1812, when El Gordo was born. Every little advantage is sought to tweak the odds, and, naturally, the Granadilla petrol station is seen as a lucky place to buy tickets. Another, in Arico, also dished out the love this year with portions of the fifth prize. The big attraction of El Gordo is the sheer range of prizes. The first, second, and third prizes stem from one main number. After that, there are two big digits for fourth prize and eight for fifth. This spreads out further down the lower range as winning shares decrease, but it does mean a large number of people get modest but handy cash gifts. El Gordo is a finely-tuned machine, and organisers can tell within minutes where the winning 20-euro tickets were sold … and then it’s an anxious wait until the bubbly starts to flow. Many groups and small communities pool their resources so outbreaks of wild street parties are

common across Spain. If you want to take a punt next year, you won’t have long to wait because tickets start selling from July. The El Gordo lottery actually began in 1812, raising money to buy bullets and cannons to fight Napoleon in Spain’s War of Independence Its roots were in Cadiz, Andalucia, said the University of Sevilla’s Manuel Moreno Alonso, a professor of history. He added: “It appears that Captain General of Cádiz, Gervasio Gasca, proposed to establish the lottery with the object of raising funds to alleviate the situation of displaced people, and to reinforce the resistance.” In 1812, the Spanish government ordered 25,000 numbered wooden balls to be given to the authorities between 15-20th December. The lucky numbers that year were 03604, the winners bagging 8,000 Spanish dollars from their 40-dollar investment. Dozens of winners this year will include many syndicates and entire villages, each collecting millions of euros to share around.

Playa San Juan and Alcala, and all is set to click into place. Jose Luis Delgado, the Canarian Government’s Director General of Infrastructure, predicts that the new link will absorb 8,000 vehicles a day from the TF47. The new system is another step towards building a new

ferry port, from Fonsalia to La Gomera, at the closest crossing point. It was first suggested 21 years ago, but it moved a step nearer in October when the Canarian Government approved a 300,000sq/m plot of land for the port site. There is already a new desalination plant on that

part of the coast, which is scheduled to come online within months. The tiny Fonsalia village will have to get used to being in the mainstream. The population is officially 193 people, but, even among all this upgrading work, it retained its charm, with the small church and plaza at its heart.

Christmas Greetings from our President

The editor says... Email: editor@canarianweekly.com

The true spirit of Christmas! AMIDST the news of war, disaster and devastation, there is always something at this time of year that pops up and puts your faith back in humanity. It’s the kindness shown when making a collection, or buying a gift for one of the many children here in Tenerife’s orphanages, or, even more so, random acts of kindness for someone you’ve never met or even heard of. Two weeks, we ran a short piece promoting a benefit gig for one of the island’s entertainers, and last week we published the result. And I wanted to give credit for the latest update to Dave Michaels, another entertainer and radio presenter on the island, who wrote the following piece: “Around two weeks ago, we found out that a fellow-entertainer was terminally ill with stage 3 colon cancer. We didn’t know. Nobody knew! He is a very quiet, proud man from a small town in Bulgaria. “Most people wouldn’t really know him because he plays his guitar quietly in the corner of restaurants. “At least he did, until his aggressive chemotherapy robbed him of the nerve-endings in his fingers, preventing him from doing what he has always loved to do, and how he has provided for his family, wife Desi and his two children, aged one and five. “We found out, only when it was getting too late! “His name is Greg Stetson and I decided on a simple plan: a sign to be placed in bars that simply read: “An entertainer and friend of the bar has been diagnosed with terminal cancer. If you are buying a round, get Greg one in … just a euro.” “On the first night, we raised 78 euros. Nobody really knew Greg, a stranger to most people, but they bought him a drink, as did a few other bars. “I published my results on Facebook, and a few more bars decided to help: three bars ac-

tually, who held fund-raisers at which other entertainers would sing for free. “This sounds fairly unremarkable, except that, in 10 days, we raised 5,500 euros for a stranger. Through Facebook and mentioning Greg’s name, we received offers of food parcels and gifts from the residents of our island, and as far away as Germany, from a lady I am still in touch with. All for a stranger to most who donated. “Surely this is what Christmas is supposed to be: a light in the dark for the people who need us most. “Local charities, such as the Lions and F.A.C.T (Fighting Against Cancer in Tenerife), pitched in. And some local barowners offered money from their own pockets. “But other than this generosity, everything was raised by common people, caring for a stranger; a man nobody really knew, who was to be evicted from his home because he couldn’t play his guitar any more. “We didn’t know if he would see Christmas, so we decided that, whether or not he managed it, we would make sure his family had a Christmas to remember for very different reasons. “A Christmas that his children would know their Dad was remembered by 1,000 strangers, who still believe Christmas wishes should come true. “And when the inevitable arrives, to provide for their future; to be where their Dad knew their life would be better. Here in Tenerife! This was his Christmas wish, and it has been our pleasure to help it come true. “A gofundme.com account has been set up in the name of Greg Stetson cancer fund, should anyone else wish to donate.” All I can say is, wow … this really is the true spirit of Christmas! Until our next issue on 6th January, have a fantastic Christmas and a Happy New Year. Chris x

THERE are inescapable dates on the calendar, which come around every year and make us change our daily routine: special moments that help us reflect on the truly-important things in life, such as the precious moments we spend with our family, friends and co-workers. All of this is Christmas, celebrating the Nativity of Christ with our eyes fixed on those around us. As the principal public institution on the island, we share this spirit and take a moment to review the priorities that must mark the road our government takes in the New Year. In 2017 we will have the highest budget in the Cabildo’s history, and our responsibility is to manage these investments in the most effective way, thinking only of improving the lives of everyone living on this island. We will have the necessary funds to generate employment, to achieve a more-balanced island with investments all over Tenerife, and to serve our elders and families who are less fortunate. The Cabildo will improve the roads to make it easier to move around, and we will not give up when it comes to removing the obstacles that others may put in our way. We are also thinking of our little ones and their future: in all those children who still believe in the magic of Christmas, and to whom we must offer a future filled with opportunities. Without doubt, Tenerife 2030 is our star, guiding us today on the path to progress. To facilitate the learning of languages, to foster creativity, innovation, sports practice or entrepreneurship is to offer our young people the wings to fly high and follow their chosen course of life. It ensures the horizon of those who will be the Island’s protagonists tomorrow. A future that is being designed today. May the spirit of Christmas accompany you every day of the year to design, between all of us, a tomorrow full of opportunities. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Cabildo’s 282m euros will add an enormous sparkle to our island

A TOTAL of 44 hotels and apartment complexes in Tenerife will have been remodelled at the end of the fouryear period between 2015 and 2018, together with eight new tourist complexes.

Cabildo President Carlos Alonso said the planned investment exceeded 420 million euros. Of this colossal sum, 282m euros corre-spond to renovation projects (67%

of the total), and 138m to new hotels (33%). Alonso also highlighted the training projects encompassing the “Luxury Hotel” industry, which accounts for 21% of the renovation investment. “This is excellent news because every room occupied in a five-star hotel generates twice as much employment as one in a four-star establishment,” he pointed out. “So, in addition to improving accommodation quality, we are also creating more employment.” The

President also requested that the Canarian Government and the State continue to invest in tourism, both through projects to improve public spaces and investments in reconditioning the coastline and beaches. Jorge Marichal, President of the hotel management company Ashotel, added: “Co-ordination between public administrations and businessmen in the industry is decisive. “Industry growth improves accommodation performance, and gives added

value to our customers.” The renovations will concentrate mainly on older accommodation which has been on the market for a long time. But it will also include accommodation owners who want to upgrade their facilities and adapt to the new tourism trends. During this process, more than 21,000 rooms will be renovated. And the additional eight new hotels, comprising fivestar or Grand Luxury accommodation, will add a further 3,121 rooms.

Easyjet to carry on spreading its wings BUDGET airline easyJet announced is planning to operate 10 new international routes to and from Spain, which will increase the number of seats available to the country by 11% to 16.4 million in 2017, compared with this year’s 14.7m. The airline is opening a new base in Palma de Mallorca. It will start operations in two new airports, in Granada and the Canarian Island of La Palma, and add a fourth plane to its fleet in Barcelona. Javier Gándara, General Manager of easyJet Spain, said the expansion would create around 150 jobs. He added that easyJet wouldn’t consider increasing routes to and from the Spanish capital, because a large number of flights from competing airlines were already taking off from Madrid-Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport. EasyJet also plans to protect itself against the possible effects of Brexit by applying for a licence in an EU country to continue operating its European routes. More than 50% of the company’s flights take off and land outside of the UK. The low-cost carrier also predicts that the cost of tickets will continue to decrease over the next year, despite the possibility of oilprice increases.

A mum-ofthree killed A POLISH mother of three, aged 39, died in a car crash at around 5am on Sunday on the road between Cabo Blanco and La Camella.

Her car flipped over in the collision and her passenger, a 44-year-old woman, suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Hospiten Sur, the green hospital. The deceased woman’s children, aged three, eight and nine, lived with their father in Arona. Police sources say the two women had just left a night club in Verónicas. Firefighters had to rescue the injured woman from the vehicle, but the driver was killed instantly. Local Police officers informed the father and requested psychological assistance for him and his three children from Arona’s Social Services department.

Mayor of Icod: Let’s keep Butterfly Farm

The mayor of Icod de los Vinos, Francis González, wants closure on the never-ending conflict over the municipality’s Butterfly Farm, which began 20 years ago.

He is asking the owner, José Antonio Plaza, to reconsider moving the farm to Santiago del Teide and, instead, give the property a cosmetic upgrade, which says the Mayor, is “also requested by the Cabildo’s Historical Heritage Department”. González added: “It would be much easier to upgrade the current building than to start

from scratch in another location.” The Mayor also defends his actions regarding the Butterfly Farm saying: “We have insisted with the Canarian Government that the General Urban Management Plan should not affect the Butterfly Farm. “If they agree with us, the Butterfly Farm would have to comply only with the cosmetic upgrade imposed by the Cabildo, such as changing the stone on the front of the building, changing the colour of the aluminium and fit clear glass to make the site a glass-encased garden. But José Antonio Plaza is shocked with what the Icod Mayor

had to say about his Butterfly Farm. “The truth is, we have not been notified by the Cabildo’s Historical Heritage Department,” he insisted. “If someone tells me, in writing, what I have to do, I will do it. “Initially, they said we had to knock down the building and build a new one, and now they want us to remodel the building with impossible changes. “No butterfly farm in the world has clear glass, because the sun would create a magnifying effect and kill the insects.” He added: “The Mayor doesn’t want to take any responsibility, and, absurdly, is accusing me of campaigning against Icod.”

Eviction notice is quashed, for now Christmas has come early for Yusnadia Hernandez and her 12 year old daughter, living in Altantic View, Costa del Silencia, as their eviction order has been suspended until the 1st of February next year.

It was supposed to take place on Wednesday (21st), but Arona Town Hall has intervened, paralyzing the eviction until the court case against her is clarified, because both the Court of Arona and the Provincial Court have

ruled the purchase of the apartment where she lives as null and void. Yusnadia purchased the property for 25.000 euros and subrogated the existing mortgage from the elderly Italian gentleman who she looked after, but was later denounced by his

Festive markets

23rd December 2016 - 5th January 2017

Strictly squeals on wheels

TWO special Christmas markets will be setting out their stalls over the coming weeks. The first is in Alcala today (Friday) in Calle 1st Mayo from 6-10pm.

Then further along the coast, Playa San Juan will be welcoming customers on Thursday and Friday on the Paseo Maritimo, also from 6-10pm.

Burglar’s Lottery flop

The Local Police arrested a 65-year-old man in Santa Cruz early last Sunday for breaking into a barber’s shop.

He was caught, thanks to various witnesses who called the police and reported the burglary, which netted him five Christmas Lottery tickets, a brush and a comb! The man, who did not resist arrest, has a long police record, committing several burglaries in commercial premises, using force to gain entry. He has also been guilty of various muggings.

NOT a tank-top or glitterball in sight, but El Medano spun its wheels and went back to the Seventies with a roller-disco extravaganza last Saturday. The young audience had

no knowledge of the fashion crimes committed by the older generation. They just lapped up the musical treat, which was part of Granadilla de Abona’s “At Christmas” programme.

From 6pm to 10pm, the Magallenes Plaza was transformed into a dance hall, with skate hire for those not already equipped. There were no mean judges, or wobbly celebrities … so it

was just good fun all the way, with the emphasis on sport, music, and health. It was all well-supervised to ensure safety, thanks to Granadilla’s Employment and Promotions Department.

Adeje’s massive business project ADEJE Council’s Economic Development and Job Creation Department, run by Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martin, has been developing the ImPyme Adeje project.

This new “geolocalisation” (geolocation) trend helps local businesses, of which there are many, become more visual on social networks and the World Wide Web. “What we are working towards is giving the

local commercial sector an extra tool to promote their businesses on the web,” said Cllr Martin. “In so doing, we are galvanising the local economy, which is in a healthy state in Adeje. “We are at phase one of the project and already, 500 local businesses are mapped on the internet.” ImPyme Adeje has three phases: *Identify, localise and help build a business network *Innovate and train *Assess and invigorate, collaborate and promote The companies that already signed up are

A paradise for entrepreneurs

THE Cabildo has presented the available advantages when starting a business or investing on the island to more than 40 entrepreneurs.

The get-together took place at “Google Campus Madrid”, an entrepreneurial and innovation meeting point in Spain. Antonio Garcia Marichal, Canarian Minister of Innovation, was part of the “Tenerife Start-up Paradise” event, in which various Canary Island companies spoke of tax benefits, financing and the resources available to Tenerife. Marichal, also stressed that the Cabildo aimed to provide Tenerife with infrastructures and industries that will create employment. He believes all these advantages, and the work being done by the Cabildo through the Science and Technology Park (PCTT) “make Tenerife one of the most attractive regions to start up a new business”.

in the centre of Adeje, including those in La Postura, Los Olivos, El Galeón and Las Torres. Details of the businesses, contact names and numbers, the kind of commercial activity engaged in and their location, have been taken and uploaded. Visits have been

made to find out, in more detail, about the services on offer, and how the Council can help improve them, etc. The 500 companies now have a presence on Google Maps, which allows people to search for them and find out what they need to know. Images from the

inside of the uploaded businesses will also be added shortly to enhance their online presence. The scheme has come to fruition through Adeje Council’s partnership with Crea Solutions, a locally-based company which has undertaken the geolocalisation of

the businesses. During 2017, the next phases of the project will arrive. And, says Cllr Martin: “The project will be completed when all Adeje’s businesses are geolocalised, so we are asking them all to come on-board and contribute to this positive initiative.”

I’m not Captain Calamity, insists calamitous captain NOT for the first time, a life on the ocean wave simply hasn’t suited “Captain Calamity” because, just 48 hours after setting off to row across the Atlantic Ocean, he and his crew had to be rescued again after he became ill.

The Captain, aka 48-yearold Roy Finlay, and the Orca II catamaran rowers, were airlifted to shore, just 95 miles south of their Gran Canaria departure point, after he complained of kidney problems. But their misery didn’t end there because they left their passports in the abandoned boat and are now stuck in Spain. It is the latest in a series of mishaps for Mr Finlay, who was accused of inciting a mutiny during his 1998 transAtlantic record attempt. But he has always denied the crew’s claims that he was idle, that he was drinking … and that he had entertained a prostitute onboard their boat! This time, the men were hoping to beat the world record for the fastest crossing of the Atlantic, set in 2011 by a six-man crew in 31 days

Cruise ships can’t stop in Los Gigantes … yet! SANTA Cruz Port Authorities say they don’t have the power to authorise cruise ships to dock in Los Gigantes, which the company owners want to do. And that’s a setback for Santiago del Teide Mayor Emilio Navarro, who says he is “working with the Harbour-master and the Spanish Navy” for a solution. “First, we have to establish which administration holds the authority to authorise cruise ships docking in Los Gigantes,” said Navarro. “And then we need a survey to determine the exact points in which this type of vessel can anchor safely. This is a similar initiative carried out by other European countries, such as Greece. And Mayor Navarro adds: “Los Gigantes is one of the safest areas on the island for this type of operation. And the Los Gigantes port has approved this project.”

23hrs 31mins, aboard a boat designed by Mr Finlay, Their latest mission began in Gran Canaria’s Puerto de Mogan last Wednesday, but the poor old rescue squad were out in force again on Friday morning. The passport-less crew were airlifted back to the Canary island from their catamaran, and, said a crew spokesman: “Sadly, the expedition is over. The crew were evacuated from the boat by helicopter and are all now safe on dry land. “Our next big challenge is

working out how to get home without passports.” Mark Agnew, one of the crew members, who were raising money for the Overcoming MS charity, added: “Safety is always the No.1 concern on expeditions. “And with one crew member in a seriously-bad way, we had to order an emergency evacuation, barely a few days in. Obviously, I am devastated, but I’m glad everyone is okay.” Earlier this week, Mr Finlay, a former Royal Navy diver from Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire,

1,000-job success for Cabildo plan

THE new “Neighbourhood employment: together we are stronger 2016” campaign, promoted by the Cabildo, has led to 647 people finding employment on the island this year.

In 2015, some 393 people found employment, thanks to the initial scheme, which means it has already helped put over 1,000 people in work. It is also down to the Canary Islands’ Foundation for Training, Employment and Business Development (FIFEDE) entity, in charge of the vital campaign, which offers support to people who struggle to find work through lack of qualifications. Cabildo President Carlos Alonso, delighted with the extra number of people now

working, and the project itself, now aims to attract more agents to this network, and have more co-ordination with local town halls. Alonso admitted the campaign was part of a larger project, MEDI, which aims to promote economic and social development on the island, to which the Cabildo will allocate 10 million euros next year. Tenerife’s governing body released a report saying the campaign offers individual advice and support to each participant, training tailored each person’s needs - and to the companies’ professional profiles. This year, 1,535 people completed the campaign’s specifically-designed itinerary, which means that more than 40% of the candidates who participated actively in the programme found employment.

was understood to be resting after spending a few hours in a Gran Canaria hospital. The 54-year-old was first dubbed “Captain Calamity” in 1998 after his first disastrous attempt to break the rowing record between the Canary Islands and the Caribbean. That voyage appeared to be going smoothly at first, but when the Atlantic Endeavour crew docked at Cape Verde islands for urgent repairs, 700 miles off the west coast of Africa, the oarsmen called off the attempt following

disputes over the execution of the record-attempt. “Captain Calamity” insisted his crew had, maliciously, concocted the story of his night with a call girl, describing it as lies. The so-called “mutineers”, who had trained for a year and paid £5,000 of their own money to attempt the row, were accused by the hapless “Captain” of lacking the stomach for the voyage. In November 2013, he and four crew had to be rescued by helicopter when their £50,000 boat Barracuda lost steering off Gran Canaria during another record-breaking attempt on the Atlantic. But Mr Finlay hit back at his “Captain Calamity” tag in an interview shortly after the 2013 rescue, saying he missed out on the Atlantic rowing world record by just a day in 2007, and that a boat he designed in 2010 set the world record. He said then: “I believe that what I did was stick with the original intention, and I kept trying to break this record. He added: “When I hear this name ‘Captain Calamity’ being used, I think ‘For God’s sake, I designed and built the boat’. “I also missed the record by a day. How the hell does calamity fit into that? That’s what p*****s me off.”

Drug-smugglers ripped apart by Guardia Civil MEMBERS of an international, growyour-own drug-smuggling ring, said to aiming at the sporting world, have been nabbed by Spain’s Guardia Civil.

Officers confirmed that the traffickers arrested, from the UK, France, Spain and Iran, were targeting those with “prestige and links to the sporting world”. Officers held 21 people in connection with cultivation at homes in Estepona, Marbella and Mijas, on the Costa del Sol, and selling marijuana illegally. The gang were responsible for at least three plantations where cannabis was grown, all well hidden, with high security to protect them. But the Guardia Civil found

a way in and raided these premises, plus five others, in which they discovered a large amount of cash and a number of weapons. Overall, the operation seized 69,857 euros, £7,855, five pistols, two revolvers, one shotgun, gold bullion, 17 expensive vehicles … and 1,250 cannabis plants, 191 grams of cocaine and 1,000 anabolic steroids. One individual, hiding in the UK, was detained as he flew into Spain, and those involved will be charged with being members of a criminal organisation, drugtrafficking, possession of illegal firearms, carrying false identification and theft of electricity. The arrests followed a seven-month investigation into the network, which, said the Guardia Civil, was a “complex hierarchy, with different roles assigned to each member”.

Giant aquarium given green light by Council ADEJE Council has finally given the goahead for Europe’s biggest aquariums to be installed at Los Torres, following a two-month delay.

The 20m-euro project was put on hold because of the Council’s building ban on the derelict site there, which has now been lifted. The aquarium will house one of the largest tanks in the world, and Asian owner Hai Rei SL plans to feature 10,000 fish of all shapes and sizes. The installation will have a total of 70 aquariums with 950 species, both

marine and freshwater, and invertebrates, such as sharks and jellyfish, generating both regional and international aquatic systems. It will take 17,733.974 litres of salt water and 300,000 litres of spring water to fill all the aquariums. The latter will be transported by road from Adeje’s desalination plant in Adeje, a process which will be carried out over 18 days with three tankers, making four trips daily. The area, once used by Tropicana, has been at the centre of a tug-of-war involving ambitious projects by various companies. Tropicana Atlantic SL, whose workmen had to down tools during a recent

Council-company dispute, are now clearing the entire 62,300sq/m area. The land, just below Adeje old town, is a prime site and the Council has been keen to see it developed, balancing leisure and retail facilities sensitively, and, naturally, with the creation of new jobs. Hai Rei Aquarium Tenerife, to give the construction its full name, will cover some 19,000sq/m of the 38,000sq/m plot. The company estimates that 50,000cu/m of debris will have to be removed, and the work taking between 12-15 months. There will be careful scrutiny of the land and ongoing work because it is in

the protected area of Teno Rasca Natura 2000. It will be the first protected area in Spain to be administered by a business group. Owner Hai Rei will be working closely with the territorial custody platform of the biodiversity foundation of Spain´s Environment Ministry, and conservation work will involve local and international groups. Once open, it will be all about the fish, the range of which will give visitors a chance to see many species they would never be able to appreciate in the wild. Locally, the development will create several jobs. At the current construction phase, there will be 200 direct

jobs, followed by 46 once it opens. A further 30 jobs would be created indirectly through the service and tourism industry. The aquarium would take up just half of the site, and several large shopping groups have been mentioned as possible neighbours, including a few of the popular stores around Santa Cruz. The big plan for the area is for the company to enhance the tourism value, and benefit the local community and economy. Money for the aquarium’s basic construction has been raised from private sources, and the project is expected to be operating some time in 2018.

LOS Cristianos port is among 24 in the EU to be included in the TransEuropean Transport Network. It opens up the door for European grants, such as those provided by the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for Transport. And that means the Tenerife port, which qualifies for admission because it has enough traffic coming and going, could be in line for new infrastructure, or at least an upgrade.

THE long, probing, Spanish arm of Crimestoppers has reached out and grabbed another villain on its “wanted” list.

Leila Kassam, a 32-yearold paedophile from Leytonstone, East London, was jailed for four years at Blackfriars Crown Court after fleeing to Spain while on bail. She had been found guilty of taking part in a child sexring. She admitted having sex with a 15-year-old girl, and arranging a child sex-offence in June this year before disappearing while on bail. Kassam and ex-partner Paul Silverthorn, who disappeared at the same time, had sex with the girl after she was introduced to them by a “fixer” in 2014. Silverthorn, 36, tied the

victim to a bed after she was given the legal high “5 NEO” at a party in Haymarket, before Kassam molested her. The couple also sexuallyabused a second 15-yearold girl, while Silverthorn

took explicit photos of the teenager. Kassam, who fled before being sentenced, worked on an Ibiza farm during the summer months. But the farm owner contacted police

after seeing Crimewatch appeals online. A European Arrest Warrant was executed by the Guardia Civil in Spain and Kassam was flown back to the UK on 9th December. But Silverthorn is still on the run following his nine-year prison sentence. He is also wanted for administering a substance to a second 16-year-old victim, possessing prohibited images of a child and distributing indecent photographs of a child. Faham Jaffer, 33, of Colliers Wood, and Daniel Trinnaman, 20, of Stanmore, Middlesex, were jailed in June for their parts in the plot. Trinnaman was sentenced for sexual activity with a child and perverting the course of justice by sending threatening Facebook messages, while Jaffer was found guilty of having sex with a child.

Father Brown: The Star Of Jacob BBC1, 13.45

A mysterious stranger, a missing donkey, an outbreak of laryngitis in the church choir and a kidnapped baby threaten to spoil Kembleford’s Christmas festivities in Father Brown: The Star Of Jacob. Distinctly lacking in Christmas cheer, Canon Fox (Roger May) pays a visit to Father Brown (Mark Williams) and Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack) to announce that premier Catholic duke - the Duke of Frome (Ray Coulthard) - will be staying with Lady Felicia (Nancy Carroll) at Montague and attending Christmas Mass at St Mary’s. Unlike in previous years, this year the Bishop wants everything done by the book and Canon Fox will be there to make sure his wishes are carried out. There will be ‘the full biblical line-up’ including wholesome children, a proper choir and even snow, he demands. Daunted but undeterred Father Brown and Mrs McCarthy set about their task, but when the donkey goes missing, laryngitis hits the choir and a filthy down-and-out (Dean Andrews) is found sleeping in the confessional box, it looks like Canon Fox’s best laid plans are going to be thwarted.

The Great Christmas Bake Off 19:00, BBC1

The tent has been decorated and the invitations have been sent out for two very special Christmas episodes of The Great British Bake Off, featuring returning contestants from previous years. A festive welcome awaits four more returning bakers, Chetna from series 5, Howard from series 4, James M from series 3 and and Janet from series 2. The judges have set three festive challenges, starting with a savoury signature to get the Christmas party started. In the technical, Paul has a gifted them a bread challenge that’s not for the faint hearted. The final challenge, the showstopper, is huge, as the judges lay the festive gauntlet and ask the bakers to make a trio of Christmas favourites. But who will hold their nerve, and produce the perfect desserts

Inside No 9 - The Devil Of Christmas BBC2, 22.00

Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith return with a seasonally-twisted special of their anthology comedy, Inside No.9. It is Austria, Krampusnacht, December 1977. Julian Devonshire (Steve Pemberton), his pregnant wife Kathy (Jessica Raine), their son Toby and mother-in-law Celia (Rula Lenska) arrive at the alpine chalet for a family holiday. They are shown around by Klaus (Reece Shearsmith) who tells the family about the local legend of The Devil of Christmas. All the good children are given gifts by St. Nicholas, and all the bad ones are punished by the demonic Krampus. But who has been good, and who has been bad?

Jonathan Creek BBC1, 21.00

According to legend, a 19th century sorcerer named Jacob Surtees would summon the powers of Hell to terrorise and subjugate his victims at his home, Daemons’ Roost. Contemporaneous accounts describe his impossible feats of telekinesis, which have remained unexplained to this day. One hundred and fifty years after his death, the house is occupied by another, equally macabre, figure: veteran film director Nathan Clore (Ken Bones), whose output of horror movies in the 1970s generated its own brand of terror.

For the second part of their adventure the group go East to experience living like Japanese retirees. Miriam Margolyes, Wayne Sleep, Bobby George and Rosemary Shrager travel to Japan, which in 2015 had the second-highest life expectancy in the world - in search of the secrets to longevity. In the historic city of Kyoto, they move into a homestay with 73 year-old twin sisters, Setsu and Fumie. Struggling with Japanese etiquette, Miriam soon learns that being loud and breaking wind in public doesn’t go down well here. Keen to live like locals the group start their day with an early morning keep fit class, called Radio Taiso. Broadcast nationwide, thousands of elderly residents take part in a free exercise class to keep everything ticking over.

Peter Pan Goes Wrong BBC1, 18.20

As part of its commitment to community theatre, the BBC has commissioned The Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, an amateur dramatics group, to recreate the J. M. Barrie classic as part of their festive programming. But can they pull it off? Narrated by David Suchet and filmed in front of a live audience, watching as Peter Pan flies through the air, Captain Hook and his pirates set adrift in the lagoon, and Tinkerbell is due to light up the stage in a stunning electrical costume… what can possibly go wrong?! With their trademark comic mayhem expect brilliant stunts, chaos, technical hitches, flying mishaps and cast disputes on the way to Neverland with hilarious and disastrous results.

The Halcyon ITV1, 21.00

Two of the UK’s most acclaimed actors, Steven Mackintosh (Luther, The Sweeney, Inside Men) and Olivia Williams (Anna Karenina, Hyde Park On Hudson, The Sixth Sense) join forces in a brand new ITV drama series, The Halcyon. The Halcyon tells the story of a bustling and glamorous five star hotel at the centre of London society and a world at war. The eight-part drama series also features Kara Tointon (Mr Selfridge, Sound Of Music Live), Alex Jennings (The Lady In The Van, The Queen), Matt Ryan (Constantine, Arrow), Hermione Corfield (Knights Of The Roundtable: King Arthur, Pride and Prejudice And Zombies) and Mark Benton (Eddie The Eagle, Waterloo Road). The drama, set in 1940, shows London life through the prism of war and the impact it has on families, politics, relationships and work across every social strata with a soundtrack of music from the era. Multi award-winning singer-songwriter Jamie Cullum.

Angela Rippon, Gloria Hunniford and Julia Somerville return with a new series of investigations into viewers’ travel and holiday disasters, with unmissable tips to keep your next trip on track and on budget, across the week. Julia Somerville, Angela Rippon and Gloria Hunniford investigate more of the travel and holiday problems viewers have asked them to look into. Today the team gets to the bottom of why if you suddenly have to cancel a holiday the travel company so often refuses to refund a penny - even if there may still be plenty of time to sell it to someone else. As a couple reveals how even the most devastating diagnosis didn’t allow them to cancel without losing out, a man who took on the industry and won explains how he did it. Plus, why a family who spotted a mistake with their flights just minutes after booking still ended up being presented with a whopping charge to change them, and travel expert Simon Calder has tips for exploring the Greek Islands.

Death In Paradise BBC1, 21.00

Brightening up the winter months this January, BBC One returns to the Caribbean shores of Saint Marie for the sixth series of viewers’ favourite, Death In Paradise. DI Humphrey Goodman and the team are left stumped when volcanologist Stephen Langham is found dead half way up a live volcano, after failing to return from a night shift. With all evidence and the pathologist report pointing towards a heart attack, death by natural causes is suspected by all. Humphrey, however, is convinced that one of the observatory team had a part to play in Langham’s untimely demise. With the security swipe-card system providing each of the three other scientists with an alibi for the time of the murder, how could any of them have committed the crime? Unable to find any physical evidence of murder, the team have a tough task ahead of them. Puzzled by some seemingly missing equipment at the scene of the crime and the timely presence of Saint Marie’s mayor, Humphrey soon discovers that Stephen and his colleagues, including his brother, didn’t always see eye to eye. With everyone hiding secrets, will the team be able to find out who killed Stephen and why? Meanwhile Humphrey is excited by Martha’s return to the island for a summer holiday. Is romance finally blooming for Humphrey? Elsewhere, JP is settling into married life while Dwayne risks angering the Commissioner when he lets his guard down with a local journalist.

Food News

23rd December 2016 - 5th January 2017

BEWARE! Christmas dinner should be the happiest meal of the year, but festive foodpoisoning often rears its ugly head through under-cooked turkey meat.

It will almost certainly be contaminated with bugs such as campylobacter and salmonella. And scoffing poorly-stored left-overs, or buffet food, is another common cause of infection. Cooking for more people than usual, as well as preparing elaborate dishes, means you’ll probably have to juggle the defrosting and cooking times. And making sure that large amounts of food are cooked and stored safely is vital to avoid giving your guests stomach cramps or diarrhoea! Dr Kevin Hargin, head of Foodborne Disease Control, at the Food Standards Agency, said: “Every year, collectively, we throw away seven million tonnes of food and drink from our homes. “Yet much of this waste is unnecessary, and a better understanding of how to freeze food safely could go a significant way towards tackling the problem.” With a bit of forward planning, you might already have the bulk of your

Don’t freeze turkey from festive season

Christmas cooking finished during this week and stored in the freezer, ready to be used over the festive weekend. “The freezer is like a pause button, so you can freeze foods right up to the use-by date,” added Dr Hargin. Festive freezing *Think about what could be cooked in advance and frozen to save time on the day. You can freeze pre-packaged Christmas food safely, right up to the use-by date *Cold temperatures means slow germ growth, so ensure your fridge is running at the correct temperature: below 5°C. Raw food *Your fridge is probably bursting at the seams with festive fare, so think about how you can use your freezer to store items to make way for fridge space for the turkey, like moving beer, wine and unopened jars to a shed or garage Defrost safely *If you’re using a frozen turkey, make sure you check how long it will take to defrost safely. The most reliable way to check

whether it has been defrosted is with a meat thermometer. Turkey should be cooked until it reaches 165°F and then removed from the oven. Test the temperature by inserting a thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh, without hitting the bone. *Remember, you must to check it is fully defrosted by looking in the cavity for ice crystals, checking that the wings and legs are mobile,

and pushing a skewer into the thickest part *Allow about 10-12 hours per kg, in a fridge at 4°C (39°F), but if you can’t defrost the turkey there, the next best alternative is in a cool room (below 17.5°C, 64°F). Allow approximately 3-4 hours per kg, or longer if the room is particularly cold *If your turkey won’t fit in your fridge without touching other products, and you don’t have a cool or outside room,

place it in a large dish. Cover it and leave in the coolest part of your kitchen *Don’t wash your raw turkey under the kitchen tap, or defrost it in a bowl of water, because this can splash germs, such as campylobacter, around the kitchen *Make sure you wash everything that has touched your raw turkey (including hands, utensils and work surfaces) with soap and hot water. *Ensure you allow enough time for your turkey to cook and check that it’s cooked thoroughly: no pink meat in the thickest parts, and it should be steaming hot with the juices running clear. Those leftovers *Cool left-overs, cover them and ensure they go into the fridge or freezer within one to two hours *Left-overs should be eaten or frozen within two days (one day for rice dishes) *If you make a new meal such as curry or casserole from the leftovers, you can also freeze this, even using turkey originally frozen.

Deaf threat not hearsay

Don’t cha wish your girlfriend was hot like me? By Carl from Robot

EVERY year, we announce this year’s winner of Best Hair and Best Dressed celebrity. This year sees a first for Canarian Weekly, as the winner is the same for both categories.

IN times of pain or discomfort, we ladies often reach for the pain-killers. But a recent study has revealed that taking just two tablets a week of paracetamol or ibuprofen, for more than six years, can lead to our hearing being damaged, permanently.

Yes! This year’s winner is non other than our favourite X-Factor judge, Miss Nicole Sherzinger. From her rise to fame with top girl-band The Pussycat Dolls, in the early part of 2003, to her continued success in the UK’s X Factor, Nicole has achieved cult status all over the world. Her fashion and styling have always attracted attention, from her amazing gowns to her chic day-wear. There’s no getting away from the fact that she’s a true fashion icon. We all know that she has an army of stylists, and so will always look good. But without her ability to carry off the look, all that styling would be wasted. Miss Sherzinger has designer labels thrown at her, and fashion houses pray that she steps out in one of their dresses. This girl can carry off high-street chic to high-fashion couture, rarely faltering in the fashion stakes. Nicole was born in Hawaii, but raised in the US. She began as an actress as well as a

singer, taking her inspiration from her idol, Whitney Houston. Rocketing to fame as the lead vocal in The Pussycat Dolls, followed by instant solo success, she’s been a household name for the last 13 years. As far as her hair is concerned, there’s no look she hasn’t tried. From her beginnings with her natural, black hair, to her golden, ombre blonde, she has rocked all the major colours. She’s tried various lengths, with full fringes and side-swept ones. From sleek, ironed tresses to manes of curls, she’s a girl who’s not scared to indulge herself with her stylist. Yes - she’s made a few hair mistakes, but that’s what happens when you push the boundaries. She’s a girl who doesn’t like to play safe, hair-wise. She’s an advocate of longer-length hair, and isn’t scared to swap and change her look, sometimes done to match a dress

for an evening out. So this is why I’m awarding this year’s “Best Hair” and “Best Dressed” to Miss Sherzinger, the first person to win both. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of you, who pick up this newspaper every week, a very Merry Christmas and a fashionable and stylish New Year. See you all in 2017, and thank you for reading!

The drugs are thought to cut blood supply to the inner ear, and expose it to noise damage. As many as one-in-20 women suffering partial deafness could blame her use of painkillers. The findings back up similar research in men, suggesting that middle-aged women, who take paracetamol and ibuprofen for headaches and back pain commonly, should consider cutting down. Senior author Dr Gary Curhan, from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in the US, said: “Hearing loss is extremely common, and can have a profound impact on quality of life. “Finding modifiable risk factors could help us identify ways to lower risk before hearing loss begins, and slow progression in those with hearing loss.” As many as onein-12 women takes paracetamol on two

days of every week, the US study found, usually to ward off routine aches and pains. This could be just two pills over the two days, or a greater dose. But paracetamol, ibuprofen and nonsteroidal, antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), taken this often for more than six years, raise the risk of developing hearing loss by 9%. This trait was found by examining 55,850 women between the ages of 44-69, almost half of whom reported having a hearing problem. Around one-in-six people in the UK have some hearing problems, which can leave people feeling cut off and lonely, and has been found to speed up memory loss and dementia. The study suggests this could be down to paracetamols, which most people think little of swallowing routinely. But evidence shows that they can reduce the blood supply to the cochlea, or inner ear. Paracetamol is also believed to deplete antioxidants within the ear, making the cochlea more vulnerable to noise-induced damage.

Painkillers damage the tiny hairs within the ear, which help us hear and have been linked in younger and older women to a higher risk of hearing loss. The study, published in the Journal of Epidemiology, states: “If this is a causal relation, it suggests that a substantial proportion of all hearing loss attributable to use of analgesics (painkillers) is potentially preventable.” Dr Curhan added: “Although the magnitude of higher risk of hearing loss with analgesic use was modest, given how commonly these medications are used, even a small increase in risk could have important health implications.” It is the first study of the duration of paracetamol use and hearing loss, taken as any damage to the ears after 1990 in the women from the US Nurses’ Health Study. However, aspirin, which now tends to be taken in lower doses, was not associated with loss of hearing. Sohaila Rastan, executive director of biomedical research at the Action on Hearing Loss charity, said: “This study suggests there may be a small, increased risk of hearing loss in women who take over-the-counter painkillers for a long period of time. “However, more research is needed to establish whether painkillers are the actual cause of this hearing loss, or if other factors are involved. “It would also be important to understand just how painkillers might be damaging the ear, if they are, indeed, the cause.”

Meet Lia

Hi, I’m Lia. I’m five months old, and I’m the best and brightest pup ever. That’s what my people at K9 tell me, and I’m sure they’re right!

I’m going to be medium-sized when I’m fully grown, smaller than everyone thought when I arrived at the refuge, two months ago. My elderly owners had to take me to the refuge, as a change in circumstances meant they could not keep me. I was very sad about that and I do miss them, but I’m hoping to find my new lovely home very soon. I have made lots of friends at the refuge, and I’m learning about being a grown up and responsible dog from my best friend, Fred. He’s an older lad who has been around, so knows what he is talking about. I love to learn new things, and know how to “sit” and “gimme five”. I even do “heel” a little bit. I’m now learning not to jump up, but it’s quite difficult as I’m still a puppy, and love to leap around. I’ll get there though! I love my walks, and am very good off and on the lead. My favourite game is running after my tennis ball. I even take it back … sometimes! I’m wondering whether you have a place in your home and heart for me. I promise

to give you lots of love, fun and devotion in return. If you would like to meet me, please get in touch with my people at K9, in any of the ways mentioned below. Festive Greetings All of us at K9 have only one wish this Christmas, and that is for Lia, and each of our beautiful dogs, to find their loving, safe and forever homes soon. However, while they patiently wait for their day to come, we know and appreciate how much your support ensures they are as happy and healthy as can be. From all at K9 - our pupsters and their people - we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a happy 2017. And, hopefully, Christmas came early for a lucky dog or two, in finding new homes. With the year coming to a close, we would like to say a special thankyou to each and every person who, in the last year, has assisted in so many ways Without your help, support and donations it would have made the mammoth task of rescuing and helping so many dogs, to try to improve their lives, a lot more difficult. We would like to wish our two and four-legged friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy

Cats Welfare news

Catnip toys at Christmas What is catnip? IT is a member of the mint family, and was originally found growing, naturally, in Europe, Africa and Asia. It can now be discovered in household herb gardens, and, in some countries, growing in the wild as a weed. How does it work? The natural ingredient in the catnip plant is nepetalactone, an essential oil that has a hallucinogenic effect on felines who have reached a mature, sexual age. Kittens aged six months or younger are not usually affected by the plant, and only about 50-60% of cats may be affected. If your cat isn’t affected by catnip, her kittens may not be either, as sensitivity is a genetic inheritance. Your cat and catnip A cat who is around the herb will, more than likely, sniff it and then chew it. Some cats become sleepy, and lay about stretching, while others run around and become extremely active. The high will last 5-10 minutes, and, once it has worn off, your cat will be immune to the herb for as long as two hours. Try introducing catnip into play sessions, as a special treat for your cat. Catnip toys and training Because cats do respond to catnip again and again, the herb can be a powerful

training aid. If you want to keep kitty from clawing furniture, rub a scratching post with catnip to make it more appealing. If you’ve bought a new cat bed, sprinkle a little of the herb on it, to make it more attractive to your feline friend. You can also provide enrichment for an indoor cat by buying, or creating, catnip toys. Sprinkle a bit of the herb into an old sock, then knot the top. Or put a big pinch of catnip in a small paper bag, and crush the bag into a tight ball. Adoptions Please consider adopting an adult cat. When cared for properly, cats can live well into their late teens, and sometimes early twenties.

Misty is a young adult, perhaps one or two years old, and yet another abandoned, young pet. She was found in San Blas, Golf del Sur, a few weeks ago, but has not been claimed. For a day or so, she’s understandably a little nervous when she meets new people, but she soon comes round when she knows you won’t hurt her. Let’s change her luck and find her a forever home. She’s spayed, and will be microchipped and vaccinated. As usual, all cats go on trial so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. We also ensure that they are neutered, microchipped, and have their first year’s injections. All our adult cats awaiting adoption can

be seen on our website at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets. Whether it’s an adult or a kitten you are looking for, ring or Whatsapp Maria on 646 629 129 (seven days a week, 9-6pm), message us on Facebook or contact us on our website www. cats-welfare -tenerife. com. Donations Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Tallula takes short-cut to help cancer charity LITTLE Tallulah Smith should be in tears, because she has just had her long hair chopped off. But, as you can see, the five-yearold is wearing a beautiful smile.

That’s because, for the past fortnight or so, the Adeje youngster, from Tijoco Bajo, has been raising money for the homeless organisation in Tenerife South called Arca de Noa (Noahs Ark) by having a sponsored hair-cut last Saturday. And she is donating her long hair to the UK’s Little Princess Trust charity, to help make a wig for a child with

cancer, to the delight of her parents, HeidiLouise and Darren. Tallula has so far raised around 600 euros, and people are still donating. She is presenting the money collected, on stage, during Callao Salvaje’s open-air Christmas Concert in the plaza tonight (Friday) from 7-9pm. Cassie, from the Cocobeaux salon in El Madronal, Costa Adeje, who cut off her golden locks, also donated her fee to the charity. Tallulah’s mother says: “We are so proud of Tallulah, even at a young age, she is always thinking of others and how she can help them. She’s such an inspirational, selfless little girl.”

IT was the last thing in the world the middleaged lady expected to see, as she waited patiently for the lift, weighed down by her bags of shopping. And, to be fair, a naked Dylan Tennant wasn’t expecting to see her, either, as the lift-doors opened. “A few years ago,” said the smiling Oasis Fm DJ, “my friends and I were playing dares in our apartment, one of them being that we had to take our clothes off, and go all the way down the street and back.” And Dylan had drawn the short straw! It was about eight o’clock in the morning, and he and his flatmates Grant, Aaron, James and Ben, had been out drinking all night. “So I went down in the lift with all the lads, but, as I went to get out, I saw my landlord’s mother standing there! “The boys pushed me, saying: ‘Go on, my son’, and I stumbled p a s t her

and ran all the way down the road and back up to the a p a r t ment. “Luckily, s h e laughed about it … and her son didn’t boot us out!” Born in Coventry, in the West Midlands, 32-year-old Dylan is the proud owner of the newly-refurbished

Interview by Val Sainsbury

with

DJ Dylan

You going down, sir?

Dylan’s Bar, on the El Mirador Strip in Los Cristianos. He opened it, initially, in January 2015. He first came to Tenerife when he was 16, to join older brother Corey, who was already living here. “He sings in the group Tempo 2000 (T2K) with Stuart Marlow, who’s like a brother to me,” he said, “and they won the Best Group award at the 2014 TEAs.” Looking back on a lively past, he said: “I got kicked out of school just before my G C S E s , because I was a bit of a menace on public transport. A gang of us used t o

draw on the bus windows, and chuck the seats about - the sort of thing kids do! “The bus company had it all on film, and my teacher said he’d had enough, and told me I’d have to go. “But I managed to take my GCSEs, and I also did work-based training for an NVQ in computing. “My Dad used to be a part-time DJ, and, when I first came to island, that’s what I did, and then I worked as a singer at a couple of bars.” Dylan formed singing duos with a couple of other guys, and was also resident DJ in Lineker’s Bar, for about three years. “I then formed Loaded, with Scott Henderson,” he said, “and we won the Best Group award at the TEAs in 2012. “Scott and I perform on Wednesdays and Sundays in my bar, and I have different cabaret acts on the other nights for about an hour. We’re open from 7pm ‘til 1am, and there are a couple of karaoke sessions as well. “I get everybody inside at midnight, and tell them I’m closing the inside door,

because we have to soundproof the bar at that time.” He added, mischievously: “I deliberately don’t stick anything on the glass to warn them, so I know people will walk into it. And it’s comedy gold when they do!” As for his Oasis Fm show, he said: “I really enjoy it, and I especially like doing outside broadcasts, because I love meeting the public. “I’m on air on Thursdays, from 3-6pm, and I make sure I put the show out there. I go on Snapchat and online, to tell everyone that I’m on the radio, and that I want them to contact me because I’ve got no-one to talk to! “I get a lot of requests, and feel as though I’m talking to people, even though they’re not there. The listeners get in touch, and I read out what they’re up to.” Music-wise, Dylan likes anything bouncy and happy that makes him want to dance. And during the summer months, as well as

his regular work, he hosts the crazy Utopia Boat Parties (formerly known as Insomnia) twice a week. “We meet at the Southbeach bar in Puerto Colon at about 3pm and have a few drinks,” he said. “About 80 of us then walk round to the boat, and we’re on board from 5-8pm. Unlimited drinks are included in the price of the ticket, and everybody’s happy!” But during the winter, it’s a different story. “I have a lot of work to do in the bar,” said Dylan. “We have to get ready for Hallowe’en and Bonfire Night, as well as Christmas. We also host charity events.” Dylan’s parents, Jane and Danny, still live in Coventry. “My Dad recently won about £200,000 on the Postcode Lottery,” he said, “so he’s bought himself a big, fancy caravan at Butlins in Skegness! “But I don’t miss England at all. I don’t like the politics, and the way the country’s run. Life is so much easier here.”

A leg-up to the stars DYLAN recalls when he was invited to appear on Channel 4’s award-winning comedy and TV talk show, The Last Leg. “Three comedians chat about current affairs, and they have a guest on the show,” he said. “They read out the texts that people send in. “One day, I watched the recordings of each of the first season’s episodes, and the theme song got into my head. So I wrote a little rap about the presenters, and what they do on the show. “I recorded it and Tweeted it to them, and thought it would be a laugh. About half-anhour later I got a message from the producer, saying that presenter Adam Hills really liked it. “I was invited onto the show, so I went to London and was on TV!”

Festive treat for Potters THE Direct Telecom Pool league is now taking a break until the New Year, but this week presents an opportunity for several catchup games to take place.

In Division One, there was a festive atmosphere in Los Abrigos as Phoenix Potters welcomed Tenerife Hammers A to town. With Gaffers A headand-shoulders clear at the top, this clash was a shoot-out for second spot going into the Christmas break. Los Abrigos old boys are difficult to beat at home, and, although the early frames were tight, they had a 5-3 lead going into the final four frames. Resilient Hammers are more than capable of a fightback, but the home side were in fine form and it didn’t take long for them to add two more frames to their total to bag the points and the coveted second spot. Dreamers A could have moved into third place with a win over Gaffers B, but a trip there is always difficult. It started well for the away team as Steve beat Wilson, but the home side then

put a decent run together and took the next five frames for a decent halfway lead. This stung Dreamers, who replied with the next four frames, and it was game on at 5-5. Who would blink first? Nath was up against Gav and the latter can be a tough opponent with his mind games. But Nath stood strong and gave the home side a slight lead. So it came down to Troy against Mark T, who was battling to get his team a draw. It was Gaffers B’s night, however, as Troy took the win and a welcome three points. Bluebell A were hoping to give themselves a shot of confidence as they faced Palms Elite in what was a good battle. The away side started stronger and moved into a three-frame lead, only for Bluebell A to match them with the next three. So, honours even at the halfway point. Palms Elite again came back strongly and took

the next three. Bluebell A needed to repeat their early feat for a point, and Mick got the ball rolling with a win against Barry. Mucker was up next and really needed to keep the ball rolling to give Ralph a chance in the final

8

frame. But Graeme had the edge, and, when he rolled in the black, it was heartbreak for Bluebell A and elation for Palms Elite. The Division Two title race is going right to the wire, and the only league game this week saw two challengers go head-tohead: James Hammers C and Bluebell B. James gave the home side an early lead against Keith, but Bluebell hit back with three wins. Into the second session, Ken, James and Macaroni record wins, with Lee being the only loss for Hammers. At 4-4, with four to play, there was all to play for. There must have been something in the beer because Hammers C found some extra energy and steamrollered their opponents for a great 8-4 victory, which cemented their thirdplace spot and moved them to within a point of the leaders. Our Christmas Cash Knockout tournament for all league players took place last Sunday at The Terrace Bar, on Amarilla Golf. There was an excellent turn-out, with 32 players from teams

across the two divisions forming a strong field, and round one turned up some heavyweight clashes. The Terrace Bar’s very own Marky P is a good player, but it still came as an early shock when he knocked out Neil, from Gaffers A. This opened the field up nicely, and there were more than one or two players now really fancying it. Putting in a surprise appearance was former league stalwart Jambo, who now plays his pool for the league that shall not be named. But as he had made the required number of appearances in our league, he was in the starting line-up. Jambo moved steadily through the early rounds and everybody was hoping to get him in the draw. Elsewhere, Marky P was still going well, and so was his team-mate, Paul Blacka. And from a bookies’ point of view, there was nothing between the two. But Marky P eventually fell by the wayside and, with the draw opening up, nobody could stop Paul or Jambo from moving into the final. This promised to be a genuine best-of-three clash and it was cagey to start with, both players looking to tie each other up. When Jambo found

himself snookered, he couldn’t see a way out, and, having had a few beers, he hoped the ref wasn’t paying attention and played a shot that wasn’t his. But the ref correctly saw it as a deliberate foul, with no argument from the player, and Paul was a frame up. With his tail up, he took full control of frame two and left his opponent chasing shadows. And it wasn’t long before he was rolling in the black to be crowned champion. It was a nice victory, sweetened with a 250euro prize, Jambo picking up 100 euros as runner-up. A big thanks to Terrace Bar’s Andy for his hospitality, and for putting up the prize fund. And as it proved so successful, he has invited everyone back for a repeat tournament at the end of the league season. Another big thanyou needs to go to all the players who turned up and made it a fantastic afternoon. It shows how strong our league really is. Finally a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to everyone involved in the Pool League, from the committee and our sponsors, Direct Telecom, PJ Electrical & Building Services and The Terrace Bar.

Tree-topping Tavern! NO Angels at the top of the Division 2 tree … it’s The Tavern! In their debut season in the Oasis FM darts league they showed that they have real baubles as they beat their nearest rivals 6-2 in a top-two showdown last Friday. And with matches running out, they could go a long way towards sealing the title when they play Palms Pool Bar again on Friday, 13th January. Surely unlucky for some! Emerald Lounge remain in the hunt for silverware after they held the trebles to beat Rood, who had Luc shooting in his third maximum. Sundowners claimed six points at Ourplace semi-final Playgirls, while Bar 180 also put six past Naughty Nautas. Pas O Nadas B took the last rubber to claim victory over Marilyns B, and Nauta Nomads’ last-leg win earned them a draw with Legends. Division One’s

festive Santas are Pas O Nadas A, despite a tough match at The Pub which they won 5-3. And “yule” not be surprised to learn that Richard, AKA Daddy Cool, fired in his 17th and 18th maximums in what is turning out to be a stellar campaign for him and his little helpers! Grizzly replied with his second 180 for The Pub. Six points behind, but still in with a shout, are Scruffy Macs, and their 6-2 win over Exiles did narrow the gap slightly. Over at Gaffers, a really close match unfolded as they entertained Phoenix Bar, who had Dave Mac notching his second maximum. But Phoenix let Gaffers off the hook, somewhat, with a host of missed doubles. But eventually nailed the trebles leg to tie the match. Elsewhere, Sandys Reborn had an early Christmas present, unwrapping their first win of the season as

Tenerife misfit Javi Tenerife’s chasing game wins glory in India

Basketball

Big strides forward made by Iberostar Tenerife in 2016 have raised their standards and expectations, which is why coach Txus Vidorreta was a bit downcast after Sunday’s 74-58 defeat at Valencia. Top teams Barcelona, Real Madrid, and Valencia dominate the Liga Endesa, yet Tenerife would have hoped to make more of an impact on their latest journey. The first two quarters gave them a mountain to climb after being eclipsed 21-11 and 17-8. They did manage to edge the last two quarters, but the gap was too much to make up. Marius Grigonis, with 13 points, was the only player to show his usual form. When captain Nico

Richotti is out injured, they miss so much more than the points he scores because he inspires his players. Even so, Tenerife remain in fourth spot, with over half a season to go. The latest European Champions League visitors to be rolled over by Tenerife were Lithuania’s Juventus, 7957. The hosts won all four quarters, 21-14, 18-14, 21-15 and 19-14 without moving into top gear. American Taqwa Pinero, their latest signing, showed what a useful addition he is, topscoring with 14 points. But the most impressive display came from Mamadou Niang, with 12 points. The 22-year-old Senegalborn pivot is improving

fast and becoming a real crowd favourite. Tenerife stand proud at the top of their group table, and, with four qualifying games left, they can start looking forward to the draw for the next stage. While most Canarian sports rest at the time of the year, basketball players get less downtime, and Tenerife are at home next Friday (30th Dec) at 8.30pm at La Laguna against Andorra in the Liga Endesa. Regular crowds of around 4,000 make for a great atmosphere, so check out the website www.cbcanarias.org if you fancy the Andorra game because TV television demands can cause changes to game times.

Javi Lara, a globetrotting footballer, squeezed CD Tenerife on to his CV in the second half of last season, between two spells with Atletico Kolkata in the Indian Super League. Now, the Cordobaborn, 31 year old midfielder has added the Indian Super League Cup Final to his credits after a 4-3 penalty shoot out victory for Kolkata. The league, just a couple of seasons old, is looking to emulate the incredible interest shown in the Indian Cricket Super League. The beaten finalists were Kerala Blasters, coached by former Manchester United and England player

Steve Coppell. There is a sprinkling of familiar names throughout the league, and one of Javi´s team-mates is Stephen Pearson, a Scot who played for Celtic, Derby and Stoke.

Javi made a good impression at Tenerife (his 12th club). But he didn’t fit in with the club’s plans for the new season and was welcomed back to Kolkata. Photo: ISL

A gift-wrapped success from Amath and Aaron

By Colin Kirby

MUCH better than a pair of socks or a neverto-be-worn tie! On a day of surprises, CD Tenerife gave their supporters the best Christmas present with home win over Alcorcon, sealed with classy goals.

CD Tenerife 2 Alcorcon 0

unusually shaky at right-back. He wrestled a visiting forward off the ball and then, to crown it all, keeper Dani Hernandez was forced off through a muscle strain, which had been restricting his mobility since the pre-match warm-up. Ismael Falcon, who took over in goal, wass mainly a spectator for the rest of the half as Tenerife shrugged off the poor start and got stuck into Alcorcon. The opening goal, after 25 minutes, was crafted beautifully. Suso cleared the ball from a deep position upfield

Two rainbows, heavy rain and fierce winds were the prelude to kick-off, but coach Pep Marti was even more unpredictable. Vitolo was dropped to the bench, with Alberto moving into his midfield role and Jorge taking over at centre-back. Maybe the coach had started on the party sherry... he even abandoned caution in favour of a four-man attacking force, Suso and Aaron running wide, and Cristo tucked behind Amath in the middle. Early signs were a little worrying because Inaki had to make a timely, headed clearance, and Jorge just about got away with a clumsy tackle on Luque of Alcorcon. Samual Camille looked

Marino back on track

By Colin Kirby

BREAKING up is hard to do, according to veteran singer Neil Sedaka. Where football is concerned, though, it’s a lot easier with a win behind you.

And Marino can go into the festive break with a warm glow after halting their bad run with a hard-fought victory at Estrella, in Gran Canaria. A shuffle of the pack by coach Toni Dumpierrez worked wonders, with big forwards Adan and Amed in the line-up. A clean-sheet will be a big boost as well for backup keeper Petar.

Estrella 0 CD Marino 1

to Aaron, who slipped it to Amath, the Senegal forward rounding the keeper with ease and popping the ball home. It all started to click together, with Amath running rings around the visitors. And Aaron was having his best game in Tenerife colours, while Inaki overlapped well down the left. Vitolo came back into the mainstream, replacing Aitor Sanz on the half-hour. Falcon showed his worth by getting a touch to a cheeky chip from an Alcorcon player, and he showed his authority with a two-fisted clearance just before the break. At half-time, the rain lashed across the pitch as the driving wind pinned supporters back to the covered part of the terrace. The plus side was a nice, slippery surface for the visitors to contend with, and Dimitrovic had to slide out to take the ball off the advancing Amath with the first threat of the second half. The Atletico Madrid loanee came back for more, beating two defenders before setting up Cristo, who skewed his shot wide. There was an other golden chance for Tenerife to increase the lead from an Aaron free-kick on the edge of the box, but it beat the

keeper, only to hit the bar and bounce clear. The Alcorcon bench were getting a little over-excited, and their physio got a red card for arguing with the officials. With 20 minutes left, Tenerife swapped Cristo for Omar, and he added fresh ideas. His first touch opened up a half-chance for Amath, and Suso went even closer, beating a defender only to fire straight at the keeper. Inaki tried to pick his way through the opposition defence, but should have passed before losing the ball. But Aaron had plenty more tricks in his locker, roasting two defenders before being stopped by a foul. The best was yet to come because, with three minutes left, Aaron made his run, inter-changing with Amath to take out four defenders, and firing in the second goal. Now that’s what I call a cracker! Falcon teased us by gifting a corner to Alcorcon, but when the ball came back in he redeemed himself with a strong, clearing punch. The ref then squeezed a bit more drama out of the game, dismissing Dieguez for a bad foul on a Tenerife player. But the final whistle set the home players up for a relaxing, two-week, festive break.

Last call for Golden Mile

It took Marino 59 minutes to make the breakthrough. Adan has had plenty of near-misses in recent weeks, but made sure

of putting them ahead, and his team-mates all did their bit to ensure it stayed that way. Marino are now back up to sixth place

in the league, and the two-week holiday will give some injured players time to be ready for selection again.
