THREE KINGS GREETED BY THOUSANDS
6th January - 12th January 2017
IT’S the biggest day of the year for thousands of Spaniards, and Tenerifians, of course, and hundreds of people from various nationalities shared their Reyes joy last night (Thursday) in Arona and Adeje, where the spectacular, Three King’s parades took place. And the Kings were kept extremely busy later on, delivering presents to children all over Spain and the Canaries.

Trio receive Royal welcome Continued from Front Earlier, the Three Kings of the Orient, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltasar, alighted from a helicopter in Adeje’s municipal football ground at 5pm yesterday (Thursday) and received the magical key to the town. They were met by Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, who handed over the key, which allowed them enter the homes of all the borough’s children to deliver gifts much later last night. The event was open to the public (entry was one euro, proceeds to charity), who were entertained prior to the arrival of the VIP guests. After resting, their Majesties began the parade, leaving from Adeje Health Centre, up the Calle Grande and finishing at the Plaza España. And this year, more than 600kg of jellies were handed out along the way. The parade, divided into two parts, had a few new additions. The first saw steel bands lead many cartoon characters from the world of television and cinema up the street, along with local dancers and actors, from Ballet Beanky and the Comparsa Angeles del Sur. Adeje’s volunteer fire service, the Bomberos, also took part, as well as members of the Spanish postal service,
charged with making sure the Kings received the Reyes cards sent by millions of children every year. The second part of the parade saw their Majesties taking part in a story-telling section, explaining their role in the celebration by using historic texts to tell the tale of the Epiphany and the Magi. There was also a Nativity float with the Holy Family on board. Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, Adeje Councillor for Creative Development, said: “This parade is one of the most endearing and significant, culturally, which is why we introduced new elements, creating more public interest, as well as reminding people why this day is so special.” Meanwhile, it was all stations go for Arona’s Kings as well. They arrived nice and early in the Three Kings’ boat, and entered the old dock in Los Cristianos. At 7:30pm, they accompanied the parade from the beach-front to the Cultural Centre, taking in the Casa del Mar, Calle Espigón Benchijigua, Calle Barranquillo (section between Av. Suecia and Av. Los Playeros) Av. Los Playeros until the Plaza del Pescador (outside the Cultural Centre)for the grand arrival of The Kings!
Forget Santa, the Kings hand over presents now
SPAIN’S main festive holiday, when children receive their presents, is, traditionally, on 6th January, the Feast of Epiphany. And they are delivered the night before, not by Santa Claus, but by the Three Kings. On “El Día de los Reyes”, Spain and Latin American countries celebrate the biblical adoration of baby Jesus by the Three Kings, also known as the three Wise Men or Magi. In a 2015 survey, Spanish children chose the Three Kings overwhelmingly as their favourite gift-giver (67%) over Santa (27%). In Spain “Los Reyes Magos” - Melchior, Caspar and Balthazar - play a similar role to the one Santa Claus does in many other parts of the world. Spanish children write letters to the Three Kings, or Three Wise Men, who then bring the children gifts the night before, or on the morning of the Epiphany. In some houses, children leave their shoes outside the door so that the Three Kings will fill them with gifts, often leaving bigger presents alongside. Just as children in many other countries leave out some food and drink for Santa, and a carrot for Rudolph, Spanish children make sure to leave a drink for each of the Three Kings and some food and drink for their camels. That’s because it is the only night of the year when the animals eat and drink. Huge Three Kings’ parades or “cabalgatas” are held around Spain on 5th January, which was last
night (Thursday). They are huge spectacles featuring hundreds of actors and are broadcast live on Spanish television. Every city and sizeable town stages a parade, and one of the biggest, in Madrid, draws crowds of 100,000 people, including thousands of children eager to catch the sweets thrown into the crowd by the Three Kings themselves. This year Madrid’s parade started at 6.30pm in Plaza de San Juan de la Cruz, from where it progressed to the city’s centre, ending in front of the City Hall at Plaza Cibeles at 8.45pm. In Barcelona, the Three Kings arrived by boat at the city’s Moll de la Fusta port at 4.30pm. The procession began at 6pm on Avenida del Marquès de l’Argentera and weaved its way through central Barcelona, ending at 9.30pm at the magic fountain of Montjuïc. The oldest Three Kings parade in Spain has taken place in Alcoy, Alicante since 1885. This year, it started at 6pm and ended with a huge fireworks display in the centre of town. But even if the skies are clear and there is no forecast for rain, you will see children brandishing umbrellas as
they line the parade route. The reason becomes clear as the King’s approach and the umbrellas are opened and turned upsidedown, becoming the ideal receptacle for catching the handful of candies thrown into the crowds. The roles of the Three Kings in the famous parades have, traditionally, been played by city councillors. But because most are white, Balthazar has usually been played by a “blacked-up” white man, which has often been branded as racist by critics. Last year, for the first time, Madrid’s left-wing council called time on the controversial tradition, promising to employ a black actor for the part “to reflect the integration and diversity that increasingly characterises Madrid’s community”. Some town councils have chosen to replace a King in the parade with a Queen, all in the spirit of equality, but causing outrage among traditionalists. Today (6th Jan), Spaniards typically tuck into a Roscón de Reyes, a Three Kings cake baked in a ring and decorated with candied fruit and hiding a sometimes lucrative surprise. A small figurine of the baby Jesus, or a little toy for children, is typically hidden inside the dough, as is a dry fava bean. Whoever finds the toy is crowned king or queen of the celebration, while the one who finds the bean has to buy the Roscón next year. Might the three Kings originally have come from Andalusia? The last Pope thought so!

It’s a stand-off between hoteliers and squatters By Colin Kirby
ARONA Council has found itself in the middle of row about squatters, who have taken over part of an abandoned building near Las Tarajales beach, near the market end of Los Cristianos.
Ashotel, the hoteliers’ association for Tenerife and some other Canary islands, has long complained about the run-down state of the beach, with its semicollapsed buildings on the sand. But a recent influx of around 30 squatters at a twostorey block of business units and apartments, which have never been used, has brought angry complaints from four of the association’s hotels, who say it is now an eyesore. The occupants have a different view, pointing out the waste of keeping this building empty for so many years. Four local hotels, Paradise Park, Arona Gran, Mar y Sol, and H10 Big Sur, have denounced the squatters through Ashotel,
citing rubbish, noise, and the bad image it creates for visitors using the seafront promenade. At the west end of the block,
several units have housed bars and restaurants for over five years. The unused units have been sealed off with fencing, which has been falling down steadily. There has always been some graffiti from people who breach the barrier, but it has grown over the last few months. Makeshift furniture,
bedding, and clothes are also strewn around, although they are behind the flimsy barrier. I popped down to check out the area and a restaurant owner, who said it made for a bad image, found it intimidating. And last week, an unnamed hotel director said: “The problem is that more and more people are living there,
and we are worried it will get out of control. We are still waiting for Arona Council´s reaction to the situation.” Arona Gran Hotel is the only one of the four complainants close to the disputed building, but a senior director declined to comment when I called in to ask about the problem. Back at the beach, I crossed into the forecourt behind the now-open barrier and a Spanish squatter, who didn’t want to be named, gave me his personal view, in perfect English. “I’m here for a few days from La Gomera,” he said. “I want to enjoy life. This old
building has been empty for years, and no one can enjoy it. But it’s a very beautiful setting.” As he made a breakfast of fruit and bread, he added: “I’m not trying to break them (the hotels). I can´t go into them, even though they have built on nature’s land. “But it seems that they want to break us. We are living here with basic comforts; we have a generator for some power, and we also use candles. “The police haven´t hassled us. In fact, they have been friendly. There are many nationalities here, but we are all one.”

Adeje shooting range denounced by group ARONA Court has accepted a petition filed by the Friends in Defence of Ajabo Association against Adeje Municipal Shooting range. It denounces Adeje Council, the Guardia Civil, the Employment Trade Industry, and the Cabildo’s water board, claiming that all four have acted against the law. The denuncia says the Weapons Regulations establishes that shooting ranges must be installed in urban areas fit for this purpose. And in the case of the shooting range, it is located in rustic land and does not hold an opening licence. The petition also cites that the shooting range should have had permission from the adjacent land-owners,
and that the lead shells are polluting the natural area. Last November, villa owners on the luxurious Abama resort added their collective voice to environmental complaints against the

has prioritised this need in its new Health Infrastructure Plan, financed by itself and the Canarian Government. And the Cabildo, which governs Tenerife, plans to build a new nursing home next to the new South Hospital, in El Mojon. It will have 150 inten-

Spanish kids are far more susceptible to bacterias
YOUNGSTERS in Spain are becoming less resistant to bacteria because they are being prescribed 3.5 times more antibiotics than necessary.
A study by the Valencia Region’s Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research (FISABIO), discovered that at least 50% of Spain’s prescriptions are “unnecessary”, and probably causing more harm than good. Scientific director Javier Díez-Domingo said: “Bacteria resistant to all known anti-biotics have already appeared, which means the population is in a tricky situation. But we can reverse that development through a rational use of antibiotics.” The study, carried out between 2008 and 2012, involved more than 74 million children, aged up to 18, in Spain, Germany, Italy, Norway, South Korea and the US. Spain is now among those EU countries with the highest resistances to anti-biotics, together with Romania, Croatia, Bulgaria and Slovenia.
A SICK child’s mum and dad, who raised over one million euros to pay for cuttingedge treatment to help their daughter, have been accused of charity fraud.
In fact, they had been planning to flee Spain once they knew the game was up. But they have now been ordered to post a civil liability bond of 1.2m euros. The judge overseeing the investigation into allegations against 11-year-old Nadia’s parents, Fernando Blanco and Marga Garau, has ordered the father to remain on remand, and for the mother to be stripped of custody rights. Nadia suffers from the rare trichothiodystrophy (TTD) disease, and Blanco and Garau had been organising charity drives since 2008, allegedly to pay for cutting-edge medical treatment of an illness which can delay development and cause intellectual disability. The investigation now

Expats in Spain cash in on UK ‘carer’ shortage HUNDREDS of expat care-workers, said to be “unqualified and inexperienced”, are flying from Spain to the UK to earn “lucrative sums” by looking after the elderly. A Daily Telegraph investigation found that expats, such as builders and bar staff, with fortnightly jobs, can earn up to £1,700, with minimal training. British agencies are believed to be combing through Spanish holiday resorts for new recruits by promising high wages, free accommodation and travel. And agents say there has been a huge increase in the number of expats travelling from Spain. Britain’s social-care system is heavily reliant on careworkers, some of whom are paid for by families, while others are funded directly by the state. And many, from South Africa, spend the winters there, working non-stop, from one job to another. And return home with a fortune stashed away. But in recent years, there has been a growing shortage of workers, with care-homes and companies, which provide live-in carers and home-help, struggling
to fill relevant vacancies. Regulators in the UK have warned that the crisis has now reached a “tipping point”, with widespread care-home closures and record levels of bed-blocking in hospitals for want of social care. In some cases, the so-called carers are there because they’re broke, and they admit they are going into a job they don’t want to do, simply to line their pockets. Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said the revelations were “yet another symptom of a crisis in social care”. One agency said it sends around 400 expats into
people’s homes every month, the majority coming from Spain. This, say experts, reflects a UK crisis in caring for the elderly. Dr Sarah Wollaston, Chairman of the Commons Health Select Committee, told the Telegraph: “We need to rethink, completely, the way we care for the vulnerable. “We should be growing our own workforce and not relying on short-term stints from people overseas.” But some expats have hit back at the accusations, insisting they have been trained properly and that they are doing an extremely
worthwhile job - for their patients and themselves. “I am upset to be called an ‘unqualified’ money-chaser after spending Christmas and New Year away from my family,” said a Malaga-based British carer. “I was working 10 hours a day and could only leave the house of the couple I looked after for two hours each day,” said the 44-year-old carer. “In reality I was working 22 hours a day, and it’s unfair that I have been made to seem like anyone off the street, looking for extra money. And I have plenty of previous experience. The mother-of-three, who has lived on the Costa del Sol for 12 years, added: “I was properly trained and have three years of previous experience, working in UK care homes, as have most of the girls I work with. “On top of that, I also had to go through police and background checks, and the training course was a refresher of what I’d already done in England. “Sure, there may be some who will just go for the money, but they will be a tiny minority. The work is really challenging, so don’t tar the good-working expats with the same brush.”
Charity fiddlers reaped 1m euros shows that the couple collected 918,000 euros over this period, only a fraction of which was used for Nadia’s medical therapy. Wiretaps of conversations between the couple show Blanco was considering escape just hours before
regional police located and arrested him on 7th December in the Catalan town of La Seu d’Urgell. The Judge has ordered Nadia to remain in the custody of her aunt, who lives in Mallorca. The child’s mother will be allowed
to visit her. But under supervision only. The fraud was uncovered shortly by El Pais newspaper after a donation-drive last November, which raised 153,000 euros in just four days through a television and social-media campaign.
Between 2012 and 2016, the investigation shows that Nadia’s parents spent a total of 295 euros on medication for her. In the meantime, a search of the family home produced a collection of luxury watches valued at 50,000 euros. The rent on their expensive home was being paid by the charitable foundation they had set up to manage the donations. Police investigators have determined that Blanco and Garau, both unemployed, were living off the donations. Blanco, who has a history of fraud, has served prison terms for swindling his employers. If the couple are unable to post the 1.2m-euro civil liability bond, required by prosecutors in the event of a conviction, a court will arrange for their assets to be seized.

A new year, a new start IT’S two weeks since Canarian Weekly was last out, and since then we’ve overindulged over Christmas, overindulged during New Year, and are now overindulging on Dia Reyes!
For this reason, our New Year’s resolutions start on Monday here in Tenerife, after we finally wave goodbye to the festive season for another year. So, these resolutions … what are yours, and do we stick to them? Well they have religious origins, as Babylonians made promises to their gods at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. But, do they work, and do we stick to them? Surprisingly, statistics show that 75% of resolutions will be continued through the entire first week they are started, but only 46% make it past six months. Some 39% of people in their twenties will achieve their resolution each year, while just 14% of people over 40 will achieve theirs.
So, what are the 10 most popular resolutions? Well, unsurprisingly, getting fit and healthy, and losing weight are No.1 and No.2, with 37% and 32% respectively. The next ones come in ‘bands’, with enjoying life, saving money, spending time with family, and getting organised being the next four on the list. At No.7 with 16% is not making any resolutions, and the last three are grouped as well, into getting a new hobby, travelling more, and reading more. So, where does this leave you … and me? Well, it seems I fall into the over-40s category and have an 86% chance of failing with my resolutions, so this year I’m making different ones. As from Monday my resolutions are: 1. NOT to get fit 2. NOT to lose weight 3. NOT to give up smoking 4. NOT to see more of my family 5. NOT to travel more Hopefully, I will fail again, it will be the first year that it’s a benefit. In the meantime, I’m off for a big steak with the family in the north of the island … after a sneaky fag, of course! Happy King’s Day.

Odds-on you not driving every day MADRID is to ban 50% of all private cars from its roads in a bid to tackle air pollution, using the vehicles’ number-plates to determine who drives, and when!
The capital’s City Hall has announced: “From 5.30am to 8pm, vehicles with evennumber registration plates will be allowed to drive around on even-number days, and
cars with odd-number plates on odd-number days.” The ban, known as road-space rationing, will now be activated whenever the atmosphere’s harmful nitrogen dioxide goes above a certain level for two days running, and if the air is unlikely to clear imminently. The ban exempts mopeds, hybrid cars, those carrying three people or more, or used by disabled people. Buses, taxis and emergency vehicles are not affected, either.
Daesh ‘national threat’ women held by police
TWO Spanish women have been arrested on the Turkey-Syria border after trying to return to their native country after working for terrorist group Daesh.
The pair, aged 21 and 26, and both from the tiny Spanish enclave of Ceuta, in Morocco, North Africa, have been wanted by police since they left for the conflict zone. They were detained alongside their two young children, who were born in Syria to fighters who are now
known to be dead. One of the women was married to the infamous Jihadista, known in Spain as “Kokito” or “Castillejo’s beheader”, who was killed in Aleppo in 2015. The women, Fatima Akil Laghmich and Asia Ahmed Mohamed, have Spanish national
identity (DNI) numbers and are considered a threat to national security because of their Daesh links. International warrants had been issued on the pair, and the arrests were carried out in a joint operation involving Spanish and Turkish police.

A FACEBOOK group has been set up by UK-based Spaniards to share their Brexit stories, hopes and fears.
“Españoles en Reino Unido - Surviving Brexit” already has nearly 1,000 members, who want better diplomatic support from the Spanish Government. Millions of EU citizens living and working in the UK are anxious over their precise legal status, once Britain’s split from the union has been finalised. A complex web of details will be taken into account when granting permanent residence, but nobody is clear as to what they are. The group, which has attended meetings organised by the Spanish Embassy in London, includes people who have lived in the UK for over 20 years, own property and have married British citizens. In many ways, it is a parallel to the similar groups set up in their home country, such as Brexpats in Spain. But in the absence of real leadership and basic information, people are taking matters into their own hands. Llorente, one of the group’s developers and a Spanish citizen, grew up in Venezuela before moving to London. She wanted the same diplomatic support that she remembers receiving in Venezuela. The group wrote to Federico Trillo, Spain’s ambassador to the UK, with a number of concerns. On 8th December, the ambassador and a team of experts welcomed 25 of its members to discuss their issues. The Embassy promised to help them, and those who attended said the meeting was “positive”. Romero, a 52-year-old lecturer in neuroscience, who has lived in the capital since 1988, is in the process of obtaining British nationality. He said: “Besides wanting security, I’m trying to get nationality because, after living here for 28 years, I feel
UK-based Spanish group are bidding for Brexit support
like I don’t have a voice or a vote about many of the issues that directly affect me and my family: my husband Kevin and Lola, my cat. “It’s a shock to feel like you’ve been rejected in the country you consider your home. It’s strange how, all of a sudden, you become the focus of political conversations. We have been dehumanised. They’ve turned us into bargaining chips.” Llorente’s case is more complicated. She has lived in the UK for 16 years, is married to a British national originally from India, and has a child with a British passport. Two years ago her parents, Spanish nationals, moved to England from Venezuela to be closer to her. “Although I have a Spanish passport, my links to that country are basically nonexistent,” said Llorente. “I don’t have anywhere to go back to, and no one can guarantee us that we can stay here.” Bujalance, a 41-year-old Spanish teacher, living in England for eight years, faces the same obstacle as Llorente and many others. She wants permanent residency but must
demonstrate that she has worked for five years in England without interruption. “I stopped working to take care of my kids,” she said. “And although I went back to work afterwards, I can’t get my permanent residency.” Uncertainty has become the norm following the Brexit vote. Given that there are no precedents, the only thing politicians know for sure is that negotiations will be long and complex. As one minister admitted, Europeans residing in the UK are one of the country’s main bargaining chips. But British Prime Minister Theresa May told parliament on 19th December: “I made it clear to the other EU leaders that it remains my objective to give reassurance early on in the negotiations to EU citizens living in the UK and UK citizens living in EU countries that their right to stay where they have made their homes will be protected by our withdrawal.” Brexit negotiations have not yet begun, and politicians have backtracked on many statements they have made regarding the process, sometimes
within a matter of days. Worryingly, Romero added: “I’m beginning to feel uneasy about speaking with my accent. When we have to ask someone something in the street, I’m surprised to find myself asking my British husband to ask, so I don’t have to. And it’s not only Spaniards who could be affected, as demonstrated last week when a Dutch woman with a British husband and two British children was told to leave the country after applying for citizenship. Monique Hawkins, a software engineer who has lived in the UK for 24 years, decided to become a citizen to avoid post-Brexit, immigration queues at airports. But she was rejected for being unable to supply her original Dutch passport, which she needed to travel home following her father’s death. After being told to leave the country, she tried contacting the Home Office, only to be told she was not allowed to discuss her case with the government personally. Fortunately, her local MP stepped in to resolve the mess.

Exotic pets seized
THE Canarian Police environmental unit has seized two Kramer Parrots, a species included in the Spanish Exotic Animals Catalogue. The parrots were being sold online in Tenerife, along with an exotic Tomato Frog in Gran Canaria. The parrots were taken to Tenerife’s Wildlife Recovery Centre, in La Tahonilla, while the frog is being homed at Agüimes’ animal centre, in Gran Canaria.
Migrants batter border & officer loses right eye A GUARDIA Civil officer lost an eye when 1,000 migrants, attempting to reach Europe, attacked the Spanish border at Ceuta in an early-morning assault last Sunday. The 1,100-strong mob stormed the border fence just after 4am in an “extremely violent and organised” charge. But they failed, completely, to scale the fence and two people, who were seriously injured, were taken to a Ceuta hospital. Five Spanish policemen and 50 members of the Moroccan forces were also hurt. Morocco’s Interior Ministry said in a statement: “The migrants tried to force open some of the doors in the external fence. “They used iron bars, wirecutters and large stones, with which they assaulted Moroccan forces and Guardia Civil agents. “From now on, those making such attempts will be expelled from Morocco, or face heavier penalties, according the gravity of the act.”

Annual drowning tragedies increase
They have hardly had contact with the outside world, and have never been registered or schooled; nor received any medical care. The eldest daughter suffers from a disease that seriously impairs her mobility and has been medicated by her mother only. Now, however, the Children’s Prosecutor’s Office has taken custody of the children and placed them in the island’s Santa Rosalia Children’s home. The mother recently gave birth to a fourth child who is still in hospital but under the Canarian Government’s custody until the case ruling.
Brits plumping for Spain again
MILLIONS of British tourists, who snapped up 2017 holidays before New Year’s Eve, have again put Spain top of the list in Europe.
Around 28% of 2,000 people polled by travel protection body Atol said they had chosen Spain, including Tenerife. Atol representative Andy Cohen said: “It’s one of the busiest times of the year for people looking to find a deal.”
Illegals & drugs
FOURTEEN immigrants from North Africa - 12 adult men and two minors were rounded up by the Guardia Civil and Local Police, who discovered two boats on a Lanzarote beach.
They also found 120kg of marijuana in drums buried in the sand. The Red Cross reported that the immigrants were said to be in perfect shape.
Suitcase boy
A MOROCCAN woman has been held by the Guardia Civil after trying to smuggle a teenage boy across the Spanish border - in a suitcase!
The 19-year-old, curled up tightly, was discovered at the border between Morocco and the Ceuta enclave. Officials stopped the 22-yearold woman after becoming suspicious of her actions.
Helicopter safety
A DUTCH lady hiking in the Masca barranco had to be rescued by a helicopter after falling 15 metres.
Santiago del Teide firefighters climbed down to the woman and immobilised her. But the area was difficult to access, so they decided have her airlifted by helicopter.
Rubbish pile mounts
SANTA Cruz Town Hall’s clean-up unit collected 161,420kg of rubbish from the streets after the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
This represents a large increase against the 140,650kg collected after last year’s festivities. Over Christmas and Boxing Day, the unit cleared the streets of 492,760kg of waste, against 390.620kg collected last year over the same holiday period.
Police check the body recovered from Santa Cruz docks
THE last 12 months saw 437 deaths by drowning in beaches, rivers or pools in Spain, which was 5.03% more than the previous year.
But throughout Spain, the Canary Islands had the highest record of drownings in 2016, with 71 cases reported. Galicia followed, with 69; then Andalusia, 66; Valencia 47 and the Balearic Islands, 37. As in previous years, Spanish national males were the predominate victims, 51.7% of the drowning cases recorded at beaches. The figures, supplied from the National Drowning Report, were prepared by the Spanish Royal Federation of Rescue and Lifeguards. And 2017 got off to a tragic start in the Canaries because three men were found drowned in the first four days. A man drowned on New Year’s Day at Playa del Ingles, in Gran Canaria, after he and a woman got into distress while swimming. Sunbathers rescued the woman, who had mild hypothermia, but the man had to be helped out of the sea by a Red Cross lifeguard.
And, after checking that he had suffered a heart attack, the lifeguard performed CPR without success. Another man, who died on Wednesday while swimming in Tenerife’s Puerto de La Cruz harbour, also

Candelaria, was found floating in Santa Cruz docks. Police divers recovered the body, which showed no signs of violence and had been there a short time. The most likely cause of death was drowning.

Light aircraft crash scatters sunbathers
Coke common to Britons and Spanish
THE Brits and Spanish really do know how to party … and both nations have the dubious honour of being Europe’s highest cocaineusers. The two countries are also known to have the highest consumption of ecstasy, with 4.2% of British and 3.3% of Spanish people, aged 15-34, admitting to taking the Class A drug. And an Office of Early Childhood Photo: metro.co.uk
SUNBATHERS on Las Teresitas beach ran for their lives after a private plane crash-landed on the popular Santa Cruz spot last week.
The light aircraft was forced to make an emergency landing at 1pm last Tuesday, just two days after Christmas Day.
The three people on board, a British pilot, together with a woman and 14-yearold girl, both from Belgium, were injured but survived the crash. They were taken to Candelaria hospital. Eye-witnesses said firemen had to cut through the roof of the plane to release the pilot. But the woman and the teenager walked away from the wreckage. Authorities said the plane had just left Tenerife North
airport on its way to Morocco when a technical problem was discovered. They were alerted about a light aircraft being in trouble and about to perform an emergency landing on the airport runway. Minutes later, stunned bathers reported that it had crashed on the beach. Santa Cruz Mayor Jose Manuel Bermudez said it was a “miracle” no one had been killed.
Dead baby mystery
A BABY’S body, unrecognisable as a boy or girl because of its poor condition, was discovered on Wednesday morning at Arico’s waste disposal plant.
A classification operator detected what looked like the body of a foetus just after 11am. The machinery was halted immediately and the Guardia Civil alerted. A coroner ordered the removal of the remains, to be transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an
autopsy to determine the causes of death. A Guardia Civil source said: “We have to wait for the coroner’s report, which will determine if it was a still-born and the foetus was already dead when it was thrown into the rubbish, or whether the baby was born alive and killed.”
Development (OECD) study also found the Spanish to be pretty similar when it comes to boozing because, among teenagers at least, they are said to be the fourth-biggest alcoholdrinkers in Europe. The report determined that the number of 15-yearold girls who have been drunk at least twice was 33% in the UK, 21% in Spain, and a huge 38% in Denmark.
Jobless
tally falls
THE Canary Islands ended 2016 with 229,223 jobless people, which was a drop of 18,296 against the previous year’s registered figure.
According to data released by the Ministry of Employment and Social Security last month, the number of registered jobless decreased by 5,541 people,
2.36% less than November’s tally. The 2016 service industry’s unemployed dropped by 4,142, followed by the groups with no previous work experience, which fell by 1,643. Slight falls were registered in agriculture (-59) and industrial (119). Only the construction industry was affected by a jobless increase, with an extra 422 out of work.

Puig warns against low-quality tourism SANTIAGO Puig, developer and founder of Tenerife’s main tourist area of Las Americas, has issued a resounding warning to the authorities. “Approving the modernisation and touristic improvement plans for Las Americas and Los Cristianos would be a political irresponsibility, which would involve denouncing the Prosecutor’s Office for alleged misconduct,” he said. The warning followed Arona Council’s rejection of the modernisation and improvement plans at a local meeting of councillors on 13th December, because of three unfavourable reports. Puig believes that, despite the Council’s firm No, its vote is not
binding. “However, it’s a strong rejection,” he said. “And it should encourage a definitive suspension of the current plans for Las Americas and Los Cristianos. “We cannot use the excuse that the plans are necessary to keep the hotel industry up to date, because the real hotel owners maintain their hotels in the best condition to stay competitive.” Puig flatly rejects the Administration’s “ease to give away” building height to improve and modernise facilities. “These are pure speculators, looking only after their own interest, without taking into account the damage they can cause to a tourist area that is the motor of the Island,” he added. “They are condemning it like Benidorm, by betting on urban planning similar to the Sixties and aimed
Dead woman found amid blaze at farm A WOMAN’S charred body was discovered on Wednesday afternoon on a farm in the San Marcos area of Icod de los Vinos. Firefighters were called out to a fire in a small, wooden-house annex to the main farm house at 3pm, Once they had extinguished the fire, they discovered the

at low-quality tourism.” The founder of Las Americas warns that in the coming years, Verónicas could be made into an architectural barrier along the coastline - “a total aberration”. The businessman was also critical of how freely the urban plans allow new constructions.
“In Las Americas alone, 314,000sq/m are legalised,” he said. “And an additional 250,000sq/m can be built on for new commercial premises, cafes, restaurants and nightclubs, when it states in the modernisation and touristic improvement plans’ description, that
this locality already has an abundance of commercial premises”. Puig believes that if these plans materialise, “Tourists will not have to leave the hotel facilities, and Las Americas will become all-inclusive, which would ruin small businesses.” After analysing the documents in detail,
Puig also warns that the Green Belt areas will be used to build more kiosks and beach bars. “Currently, in Las Américas, kiosks can be authorised in only 05% of the Green Belt areas,” he said. “But with the new plans, it increases to 10%, which means 200% more.”

‘Zombies could wipe out world in no time’
STUDENTS at Leicester University were tasked with calculating the exact amount of time it would take for a zombie virus to infect every individual on Earth.
Iguana beats cold winters AN iguana has survived a least two winters in a La Orotava pond, even though the species doesn’t normally tolerate temperatures lower than 20 degrees.
Jaime de Urioste, biologist and independent researcher, said he tried to catch the reptile two years ago, but it kept submerging under the water in the extremely large pond, which forced him to abandon the rescue. But he didn’t be-
lieve the animal would tolerate the area’s low temperatures until he received a call on Boxing Day from the Local Police. It took two hours to rescue the reptile, with the help of a five-metre, animal-control pole. The biologist thinks the reptile survived by hibernating more often when the temperatures would drop. And with regard to food, the iguana was in the best place being an omnivore, because the area offers lots of vegetation and insects.
They developed a mathematical model for disease, that predicts how an infection will spread through a population over time. It predicts the rate at which infections spread and die off as humans come into contact with one another. But the students claim that while their results are interesting, the data they used is not perfect. In their model, for instance, they did not account for humans killing zombies. Researchers developed a complex new formula which calculates that 100 days into a zombie outbreak, just over 100 survivors will be left uninfected. And within six months, these stragglers will also die. “Including this may give the humans a better chance of survival,” the students conclude in their paper.
Last October, researchers looked at how UK citizens were preparing for a zombie apocalypse, and where they were going wrong. More than one-third of the UK population (36%) kept a few essentials, or a “grab bag”, ready in case of disaster. But one expert claimed that most of these “grab bags” wouldn’t keep people alive in situations such as a zombie apocalypse. While food, medical supplies and mobiles phones were top of the list for a survival pack, not many people listed matches, or a simple bottle among their essentials, the study found. Professor Lewis Dartnell, a UK Space Agency research fellow, based at the University
of Kent, advised that a survival bag should contain “a fire-starting kit, water bottle, small knife, rope and food”. Scientists have dubbed the condition of being a zombie “Conscious Deficit Hypoactivity Disorder”, or CDHD, which they describe as an acquired syndrome in which infected people lack control over their actions. “Clearly, we shouldn’t be worrying 24-7 about a potential apocalypse, but it’s interesting to take a snap-shot of where we are now. and how we’d fare, individually and as a society,” said Professor Dartnell. People were reasonably confident they could handle basic first-aid if disaster were to strike, with 68% rating themselves as average to good.
HAVE YOU ARRANGED A MORTGAGE WITH YOUR BANK? NEED HELP IN RECLAIMING THE COSTS? Thousands of canaries can recover what has been paid to formalise the mortgage. The thousands and thousands of canaries who have signed a mortgage contract can recover the money they paid to formalise it thanks to a ruling of the Supreme Court that annuls the clause in question as abusive. Specifically, financial institutions must pay their clients what the notary, the registration and, most importantly, the most expensive, the Tax of Documented Legal Acts (IAJD). Although the percentage of this tax varies according to the autonomous community in question between 0.5 and 1.5 (in the Canary Islands it is 1%), it is estimated that consumers who meet the required conditions will recover an average of 3,100 euros. Although it is necessary to analyze case by case, that such conditions will always be followed by logically signing a contract of this nature and having proof of having Made; Of course, since the banks are not expected to return that money on a voluntary basis.
CLÁUSULA SUELO: Supreme Court ruling December 2016
The Supreme Court clarified that the sentence affects both the mortgages already signed (with no more limit in time than the common prescription periods) and for the coming ones. Although the decision of the Supreme Court was made public in December 2016, it is now when companies such as ourselves specializing in this type of complaint and consumer organizations are echoing a decision that, if it has to be applied on a massive basis, this will give financial institutions a very high cost. This renewed interest may be related to the increasing presentation of claims. We offer our clients the possibility of including the issue of formalization expenses with, for example, the demand to have their floor clause annulled; That benefits both them and the administration of Justice itself, as this reduces the number of procedures. Regarding the Supreme’s reasons for arguing this decision, on the aforementioned tax the sentence details that “the exclusive attribution to the consumer of the taxes derived from the transfer is an abusive clause to limit the rights that on the distribution of the tax burden were foreseen In the tax legislation, so that the general condition that contained such provision should be considered null. Similar terms are used for the costs of notary and registration, stating that “it is a stipulation that causes the consumer a relevant imbalance, which would not have reasonably accepted in the framework of an individualized negotiation; And which is expressly included in the catalog of clauses that the law classifies as abusive.” Our services: NIE & residency, conveyancing, housing, sales & contracts, social security, wills & apostille, set up new companies & self employment, legal translations of documents & legal interpreters, accountancy, wordwide re-location, tax, banking, all insurance, all driving, vehicle & traffic related documents, matriculation of foreign plated vehicles & international currency transfers.

Debts mount as Brits go crackers for credit
BRITONS are piling up debts at the fastest rate for nearly 12 years, pushing the amount owed on credit cards to a record high.
Bank of England figures on Wednesday showed that households borrowed £1.92bn in November through credit cards, loans or overdrafts at a rate of nearly £45,000-a-minute, or around £7,400 per household The figures, which excluded mortgageborrowing, represented the biggest debt binge since March 2005 as shoppers splashed out on Black Friday deals on 25th November. It was followed by socalled Cyber Monday, on 28th November, when retailers slashed prices online to encourage internet shopping, which resulted in a long-weekend of heavy discounting for consumers. But analysts said the Bank’s report suggested millions of families spent money they did not have as they used credit to snap up presents, food and drink for the festive season. Campaigners have warned that borrowers now face being buried under debts they cannot pay off. Samuel Tombs, chief UK economist at Pantheon Macroeconomics, said: “Households increasingly turned to
debt towards the end of last year in order to spend more. Such rapid growth in unsecured credit is unsustainable.” The Bank said borrowing in November, 10.8% higher than a year earlier, was the biggest annual increase since October 2005. That was the heaviest debt burden since December 2008, three months after the collapse of American banking giant Lehman Brothers plunged the global economy into crisis. Borrowing on credit cards rose by £558m in November to a record £66.7bn. Other lending, such as personal loans, overdrafts and car finance, but excluding mortgages, rose by £1.4bn to £125.5bn. The latest debt binge came just three months after the Bank cut interest rates to a new low of 0.25% in the aftermath of the Brexit vote. While the rate-cut hammered savers, who have lost out since the financial crisis, it is feared that it has encouraged borrowers to take on debts they cannot afford. “Consumers seem to be borrowing to take advantage of very low interest rates,” said Howard Archer, chief UK and European economist at IHS Markit. Peter Tutton, head of policy at the StepChange debt charity, said: “Alarm bells should be ringing. Previous experience
shows how such increases in the levels of borrowing can leave households overindebted and vulnerable to sudden changes in circumstances, and drops in income that can pitch them into hardship. “Lenders, regulators and the Government need to ensure that the mistakes made in the lead-up to the financial crisis are not repeated, and that there are better policies in place to protect those who fall into financial difficulty.” The Money Advice Trust estimates that 5.5 million Britons will “fall behind on their finances” this month because of Christmas spending. It also warns that “perilously few” families have a plan to repay their debts. Joanna Elson, chief executive of the Money Advice Trust, said: “Consumer credit continues to soar, and this is something we should all be concerned about. If the economy does suffer in the years ahead, these extra debts could become even more difficult to repay. “The figures are even more stark when you consider that they take into account only some of households’ preChristmas spending. “Our research shows that one in three Britons puts Christmas on credit, and, as a result, we are already seeing a surge in people contacting National Debtline for advice.”

Shark-repellant armband had plenty of bite for Zack ZACK Davis started surfing in Florida as a kid, and never had problems with sharks. Now, though, the 14-year-old is recovering from his first bite, after wearing a Christmas present from his mother.
Unfortunately, it was a shark-repelling, green armband, which she persuaded him to wear because, said the manufacturers, it had magnetic technology that, supposedly, repelled sharks. It didn’t work, and the shark, believed to be a black-tip, sunk its teeth into his right arm for two to three seconds. Zack was smart enough to make a tourniquet by wrapping the leash from his board around
his arm. But it still left a nasty wound, which required 44 stitches. Now, his outraged mum is seeking a refund from the armband maker. The local TV
channel reported that the youngster ended up in hospital with a large jaw bite on his arm. Zack, back home with his arm now wellstitched and bandaged,
told the station: “I just got out of the water as quickly as possible because I didn’t want to get hit again.” The incident took place near Florida’s Avalon
Beach State Park on North Hutchinson Island. It happened because the High School student wanted to catch one more wave on Tuesday.
“It didn’t feel bad,” said Zack. “There weren’t any bait fish or anything, but I felt the shark hit because my hand was on the sand and I was getting turned by the wave. “I felt it grab on for 2-3 seconds and I didn’t even have a chance to hit him. I came up out the blood-stained water. It felt shocking, but it wasn’t really painful. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, I need to do something with this quickly’, so I just took my leash from the board and wrapped it around my arm because I didn’t want to lose any more blood. Zack added: “I go surfing a lot, but the first time I wear the armband, I get bitten. His mum hopes to recover the 80 dollars she forked out for the Shark Banz armband that didn’t work. But so far, despite the TV station contacting the armband maker, it has yet to get a response.
Fisher death sparks $67m Disney claim THE shock death of leading actress Carrie Fisher means that Disney should collect one of the largest, personal-accident insurance pay-outs in history.
According to reports, the company took out a $67 million insurance policy on the Star Wars headliner Princess Leia. Disney, which owns the Star Wars franchise, purchased the £50-million policy from Lloyd’s of London, in the event of Carrie being unable to fulfil her three-film contract, according to The Insurance Insider. The claim will almost certainly be lodged, following her unexpected death at the age of 60. Carrie, who became a household name after playing Princess Leia in
the original Star Wars trilogy, reprised her role as General Organa in the 2015 film Episode VII: The Force Awakens. She had already wrapped filming for the next Star Wars episode before she died last Tuesday, four days after suffering a heart attack on a flight from London to Los Angeles. A Disney spokeswoman declined to comment on whether Princess Leia would appear in films beyond
Episode VIII, set for release in 2017. But she had been expected to play a key role in the ninth instalment of the sci-fi saga, set for release in 2019. Carrie’s death sparked waves of remembrance among fans, but also speculation over her character’s return in future episodes, yet to be filmed. And some fans on social media have urged Disney not to use CGI animation to resurrect her character.

Flushed, with coins! AN Australian Tenant has claimed on social-news media site Reddit that his landlord has barred him from flushing the toilet unless he inserts coins into a device.
The Melbourne tenant, who said he had installed a dollar coin-operated flush on his toilet, understands the idea of having to pay for
communal washing. But, he stressed: “This is taking the p**s. I pay the bill for water that goes into my apartment. He said it was a government incentive to save water, so why does he get to collect the money?” The man, asking for help, said his neighbour told him to contact a TV news station to expose the landlord. He actually posted a comment on Reddit, which drew a quick reaction. Many people thought it was real and offered advice
on what he should do, while others felt it was a hoax because there was no such device in existence. After several comments claiming the device would most likely be illegal to install since it means the renter would not have a functioning toilet, there was plenty of sceptics. One person, who felt sure the device did not exist, wrote: “I’m trying to work out how it would even operate mechanically. C’mon dudes!”
Beware, New Year’s Day is not all that good for our health
MANY people spend New Year’s Day fighting off hangovers or sleeping. But, health-wise, it is actually the most dangerous day of the year!
A University of California study collected data and found that deaths hit the heights for the two weeks around Christmas and the New Year. And the day you’re most likely to die of natural causes is 1st January! To determine this, the researchers examined death certificates issued over a period of 25 years in the US. Many studies had already
determined an increase in deaths related to self-harm, accidents, and murders around the holidays, but none relating to natural causes of death. “Natural causes” are determined to be people dying of illness, old age and disease, but not from accidents or homicide. The study authors then investigated and found a significant trend, with 5% more people dying on New Year’s Day from natural causes than on any other day. But although this surprising fact was established easily with data, the reason why it occurs is unknown. “This pattern turns up in
every natural cause of death, but not for external causes like auto accidents,” David Phillips, one of the authors, told the Washington Post newspaper. “It’s hard to understand why that would be.” While the conclusion of the study recommended more research be done in the area, no more findings have yet been published. “It’s not only a mystery, but a mystery that people haven’t even tried to engage with,” said Mr Phillips, who has obviously not carried out any more research on the subject. So if you’re reading this after New Years Day 2017, well done, you’ve made it for another year!

Chill out with a new Bingo lingo THE days when Bingo was something your old mum or grandma played down the social club on a Saturday night are long gone.
It has become increasingly popular with youngsters, and, recognising this, Mecca Bingo has given their “names” for numbers an overhaul, in keeping with the 21st century. The company has unveiled a whole host of new “modern” calls and is trialling them in its clubs. Bingo followers and Mecca members across the UK have been voting on which new calls they want to see replace traditional shouts such as “two little ducks” and “legs eleven”. Among the updated calls are “Tinder date” for 8 and “Netflix and chill” for 69. If you really don’t understand the significance of Netflix and chill, maybe you should ask a “worldly” friend. But give your child or parent a wide berth on this one … just in case! Mecca Bingo spokesperson Caroline Webb, said: “With Bingo attracting record
numbers of younger players, we wanted to tap into the resurgence of interest in the game. And what better way than by refreshing one of the most iconic things about bingo - its calls for the numbers! “Bingo calls are rarely used in Britain’s Bingo halls these days, so the trial of 21stcentury inspired calls is sure to ignite excitement amongst regular players. “Likewise, the references to modern culture phenomena and trends, such as hipsters and Tinder, and massive stars, like Adele and Little Mix, is likely to appeal to the increasingly-younger crowd now playing bingo.” Top 10 new Bingo calls Little Mix: 6 (previously, Halfa-Dozen) Selfie Queen: 17 (Dancing Queen) Tag A Mate: 48 (Four Dozen) Netflix & Chill: 69 (Anyway Up) Tinder Date: 8 (Garden Gate) Dabbing machine: 15 (Young and Keen) Hipster Heaven: 27 (Duck and a Crutch) Lads on tour: 24 (Knock at the Door) Adele: 25 (Duck and Dive) YOLO: 1 (Kelly’s Eye)
If your brat hollers, it’s 10 more dollars TAKING young children to get their hair cut is something of an ordeal for parents, especially if the kids hate going to the barber. They’ll flood with tears as soon as the scissors appear, which is why a hairdresser in Australia is in hot water. He has put up a sign threatening to charge customers an extra 10 dollars for children’s haircuts if they cry. It was spotted by a parent Down Under and posted in a mums’ community Facebook group. The poster read: “Any children that cry during a children’s haircut will result in a $10 increase in price!”
One Facebook user said of the photo: “Riiiight… well if I saw that sign, my child’s haircut wouldn’t even be starting… that’s just ridiculous. “As a side note, I wonder what happens if an adult cries during a haircut… a discount perhaps?” Another, who said he was a hairdresser himself, said it was “darn right rude”. Others said they wouldn’t give the owner the time of day, “let alone his business”, while one suggested he shouldn’t be cutting kids’ hair at all as he obviously doesn’t “get” them. The salon’s whereabouts is unknown.

AS we welcome the New Year, we can look back on what has been a busy and varied year for sterling and the euro.
In December last year, we saw a healthy GBP to EUR, with the pound strengthening up to the 1.36 range and above, which was great for those buying euros with their pounds, but not so favourable for those moving funds the other way: back to the UK, for example. In December, the rate moved between 1.17 and 1.19, not quite breaching the hoped-for 1.20 levels. Quite a few major factors have had their impact on the rates; among them the Brexit Referendum, the decision to reduce

Taxman will clamp down on shady UK accountants BRITAIN’S dodgy accountants, who are happy to help tax evaders use offshore accounts, are to be fined and named publicly under tough new sanctions.
From this week, fines amounting to thousands of pounds will be levied on any individual or corporation, who aids the evasion of tax deliberately. They will face penalties of up to 100% of the sum they helped evade, from a minimum of £3,000 upwards. Tax evasion has always been illegal, but this law means that HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs), which loses £16bn a year through tax evasion and fraud, can charge civil penalties on those
providing planning, advice and other professional services, or who have physically moved funds offshore to evade tax. The UK is one of the first countries in the world to introduce this power and Jane Ellison, the Treasury’s Financial Secretary, said: “Tax evasion is a crime, and, as a government, we have led reform of the international
tax system to root it out. “And, closer to home, we are creating a tax system where taxes are fair, competitive and paid.” She added: “The raft of measures we have introduced to tackle avoidance and evasion will create a level playing field for the vast majority of people and businesses, who play fair and pay up.”
New pound coin to baffle forgers
BRITAIN’S new 12-sided £1, said to be the “most secure coin” in the world, will be legal tender from 28th March.
The Royal Mint said its “innovative security features”, including one to be kept secret, will make it harder to forge. The £1 coins now in
circulation will continue to be legal tender until 15th October. The Royal Mint hope that certain features will make the new “dodecagon” £1 almost impossible to fake. These include microletters, milled edges - and an image that changes when the coin is seen from different angles. Royal Mint’s design-
ers believe these will make the new currency a nightmare for counterfeiters. The design on the “tails” side of the coin was created by competition winner David Pearce, a West Midlands teenager. There will also be a £2 Jane Austen coin and a 50p piece, commemorating the Sir Isaac Newton discoveries.

Britain’s Best Walks With Julia Bradbury ITV1, 20.00
“Outdoor girl” Julia Bradbury takes us on an insightful, watchable guide to the best of walking Britain. Showing us her personal favourites, the walking queen reveals breath-taking landscapes, colourful local characters and the best watering holes along the way. Julia is always on the lookout for great walks, and with thousands of routes across the UK to choose from, this series offers her insider’s guide to those well-known and lesser known gems – from coastal drama trails to epic mountain fells. Using her expert knowledge and experience, each week, she chooses her favourite walk from a distinct type of British landscape - ranging from islands, lakes, fells, countryside, coastal and riverside walks. With six great walking options across the country, the series offers an unmissable outdoor adventure, as well as revealing Julia’s secret insights into each landscape category. As walking is the nation’s mostloved outdoor activity - with a staggering 24 million of us heading to Britain’s hottest walking spots – Julia explores why we love walking and what we can discover from these very different landscapes. Julia said: “It’s always a great feeling to tog up and get the walking boots back on. In this series I get to explore some of our most distinctive landscapes and show off the enormous variety of our countryside. For a small island we sure have a lot to boast about. Walking is for everyone, so I’m hoping to show viewers some of Britain’s best in this series and inspire them to get out there and have fun.” Britain’s Best Walks sees Julia showcase our nation’s top landscape trails - guiding viewers to well-known, iconic walks, as well as those more surprising, hidden gems – and reveals our breath-taking diverse landscapes, with spectacular aerial photography that makes you want to get off the sofa to join her. A top coastal walk to one of the most famous landmarks on the Jurassic Coast - the Old Harry Rocks chalk stacks on Studland. Julia’s trail offers up views to the Needles and the Isle of Wight, along the ancient Dorset coastline and inland over the Purbeck Countryside. Taking in miles of golden sandy beaches, the dramatic history of the bay and internationally important heathlands, Julia’s walk offers a fantastic example of the British Coastline at it is best.

Monty Don helps gardeners transform their outdoor spaces. In Brighton, determined duo Helen and Dax have their hands full with twins, one of whom has special needs. Their current garden is a building site, but armed with advice from Monty they attack the challenge head on. A trip to the Chelsea Flower Show soon has them focused on what’s really important, but do they have enough energy left to get the work done? Meanwhile in High Wycombe, newly single Valerie is looking for a fresh lease of life, but her ‘concrete driveway’ of a garden has brought her plans to an abrupt halt, as she has no idea how to plant in or on it! Explorer Levison Wood - from Walking the Nile and Walking the Himalayas - undertakes a new expedition: to walk from Mexico to Colombia. His four-month journey covers 1800 gruelling miles across eight countries and some of the most fascinating, stunningly beautiful and diverse regions on Earth, from the ancient Mayan ruins of Mexico and Guatemala, across Nicaragua’s volcanic fields and along Caribbean coasts before crossing the notorious Darién Gap. Levison spends time with the people in the region, from those struggling with gang warfare in its most violent cities to indigenous tribes in the deep jungle. Lev films much of his expedition himself, capturing extraordinary, intimate moments rarely seen on screen and delivering television’s rawest and most authentic travel series.

The ‘white heat’ of technology takes centre stage in the first film, as Lovelace College is taken over by a team of research scientists who are developing a ‘thinking’ machine to equal and even outstrip the capabilities of man’s own mind. As a Russian academic prepares to do battle with the Joint Computing Nexus (JCN or Jason for short) in a game of chess, the Cold War is played out on a chequered field and Endeavour and Thursday are plunged into their most perilous, baffling and darkly terrifying case to date. Throwing himself into his work to mask the heartache of Joan’s departure, Endeavour is quickly consumed by his duties when one of the research team is found drowned near Magdalen Bridge. Assuming it to be a suicide on first inspection, the circumstances become more suspicious when two more victims are also found drowned nearby in East Cowley Baths. Is there more to the deaths than meets the eye?

The Great Indoors ITV2, 21.30
The Great Indoors stars Joel McHale and Stephen Fry in a comedy about a renowned adventure reporter for an outdoor magazine who must adapt to the times when he becomes the desk-bound boss to a group of millennials in the digital department of the publication. Jack (Joel McHale) has led a thrilling “outdoorsy” life exploring the edges of the earth while chronicling his adventures for Outdoor Limits. But his globe-trotting days end when the magazine’s charismatic founder and outdoor legend, Roland (Stephen Fry) announces the publication’s move to web-only and assigns Jack to supervise their online team of “journalists.” Jack’s eager 20-something colleagues include Clark, a tech nerd who knows everything about surviving on Mars and a zombie apocalypse; Emma, their social media expert who views Jack as the human version of dial-up; and Mason, a hipster-lumberjack who hasn’t spent any actual time outside. Jack reports to Roland’s daughter, Brooke, an ex-flame who caters to the sensitive staffers by giving them all trophies just for working hard. Jack’s best friend, Eddie, runs the local dive bar that’s popular with the younger set and helps Jack “decode” his co-workers. Jack is baffled by the world of click-bait and listicles, but if he’s patient, he may be able to show these kids that the outside world is much more than something on a screen…if he doesn’t beat them with their selfie-sticks first.

ITV1, 21.00 Freddie flies in with his crewmates, and touches down. There’s a brief moment of camaraderie, before he ruefully watches his squadron head towards the mess. He turns the other way: there’s a car waiting for him. Garland’s unsettled – what could she possibly want? Lady Hamilton watches him usher her away, looking furious. If Garland felt that they could make a clean slate, he’s very much mistaken. Freddie talks with guests, the weight of his new responsibility looms into view: he’s expected in the Lords, with his father’s friends. More alarmingly, Lady Hamilton wants him to use his leave to support her with the hotel. When Freddie demurs, the extent of her distress becomes clear: she’s all alone now, and needs her boys. Freddie feels a new sense of guilt. Lady Hamilton wants to discuss the future of the hotel. It’s time to make changes, and it’s clear that she has Garland in her crosshairs.

In The Smallest of Things by Tahsin Guner Father Brown (Mark Williams) arrives at a police event and runs into Inspector Mallory (Jack Deam) who clashes with his former boss DCI Webb (Colin Mace). Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack) is shocked to see dioramas of murder scenes – what sick mind comes up with something like this? Wilber Lesser (David Yelland) says his daughter Agnes (Mariah Gale) does, as a teaching tool in the art of crime detection, they’re remarkable. Later Agnes takes Father Brown to her workshop and shows him a diorama depicting the death of her mother, who fell down the stairs. When Agnes displays it for all to see, Wilbur loses his temper. As everyone files away DCI Webb, who was the original investigating officer, spots something in the diorama and takes it. Soon after he’s found dead, a carpenter’s awl stabbed into his chest. With blood found on his coat, the prime suspect is Inspector Mallory himself, who is arrested for murder…

Our Dancing Town BBC2, 21.00
The people of Barnsley, Huddersfield, Skipton and York have put their best feet forward for a brand new documentary series on BBC Two, Our Dancing Town. Choreographer Steve Elias has a dream to bring dance to the streets of four Yorkshire towns, in a series of spectacles inspired by the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremony. Built like a rugby prop forward, Steve Elias does not look like your typical choreographer. But with a career spanning 25 years, including roles in everything from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang to Billy Elliot, he is definitely the man for the job. Steve wants to get everyone, from gifted amateurs to complete novices, up and moving. Steve says: “My mission is get the people of Yorkshire on their dancing feet. I genuinely believe dance can change lives. I want people to tell their stories and show us what makes them and their town special. When it comes to ability, we aren’t looking for perfection - the choreography is all about scale and impact. This really is dancing in the street - professionally choreographed and captured in one continuous and awe-inspiring shot.” In episode one, Steve begins his Yorkshire odyssey in the ex-mining town of Barnsley, delving into its rich industrial past, as he attempts to recruit a cast of hundreds. On his mission to get Barnsley dancing, Steve encounters ex-miners keen to commemorate their camaraderie, taps into the town’s thriving Northern Soul scene and unearths hidden talent in the local chippie. But can he successfully unite them, and any other locals he’s won over, to pull off his ambitious dance parade, which will be immortalised with one camera, in one, continuous, unedited take?

Sugar Free Farm ITV1, 21.00
“My honest view is this is far more trouble than it’s worth…this is work for the leisured quite honestly, or for the enthusiastic. It isn’t work for the single girl wanting to get on with her life.” Ann Widdecombe Sugar Free Farm is back, following a brand new cast of famous faces as they turn their backs on their unhealthy diets and lifestyles and embrace long gruelling days of farm work in return for a diet of natural wholesome food. This year things are tougher as they’ll be spending even longer on the farm - going cold turkey from sugar, refined carbohydrates, bad fats and unhealthy, cheap, meat. But will cutting out the rubbish prove to be too much for some? Or will it make life sweeter than ever? Stepping up to the sugar free plate include actor Peter Davison, former Conservative Party MP Ann Widdecombe, comedian Joe Pasquale, showbiz reporter Alison Hammond, TOWIE’s Gemma Collins and Britain’s Got Talent finalists, Stavros Flatley. Tucked away in the rolling Hampshire countryside, the seven sugar-loving stars will turn their backs on their unhealthy lifestyles and embrace long gruelling days of farm work in exchange for only natural, wholesome food. Over the course of the 15-day challenge, the famous farmhands will find themselves either working on the farm or based in the kitchen preparing and cooking the healthy sugar free meals for the whole group to enjoy. It’s the first episode, and upon arriving at the farm, reality star Gemma says, “My lifestyle is out of control. The amount of money I spend on takeaways, I could probably buy a house by now.” Much loved comedian and King of the Jungle Joe adds, “The reason for doing this is there are so many people out there who are Type 2 diabetics and they don’t know they are and I don’t want to end up as that person.” Keeping a tight rein on the farmhands, as well as providing the healthy recipes to fuel the group, is the show’s new nutritionist Hala El-Shafie who warns, “Sugar Free Farm is not about dieting, it’s a complete lifestyle change. It’s tough and it’s about to get a whole lot tougher.” As the celebrities adjust to their new lives down on the farm, where they are tasked with fattening up the pigs, removing the fencing from an old animal enclosure, spreading muck, harvesting courgettes and lettuce planting, amongst other duties, tempers start to fray and the lack of sugar starts taking its toll on their bodies.

Italy’s Invisible Cities BBC1, 21.00
In episode two, Alexander and Michael take to the canals to discover the hidden secrets behind one of the world’s most remarkable cities - Venice. Beginning their journey in Saint Mark’s Square, Alexander and Michael take in the fusion of cultures in the buildings around them. They re-join the scanning team to hear how they will create a millimetre-accurate digital map of Venice, starting with Saint Mark’s Cathedral (pictured). Using new technologies, the team will build an innovative and interactive snapshot of Venice that can be used to help monitor and conserve this crumbling city. To complete the picture, Michael dives into Venice’s notoriously dirty canals to find out how the city remains standing despite its watery foundations. Exposing load-bearing wooden piles preserved in mud, Michael explains the ever-present danger to the city’s stability from the boats and rising waters. Venice’s numerous bridges connect busy streets and piazzas. Michael and Alexander visit the famous Rialto Bridge to see how this magnificent piece of architecture hides engineering genius in its foundations. The scanning team is on hand to reveal the secrets in detail. Using 3D scans to uncover hidden jewels in the Jewish Ghetto and the endless passageways inside the Doge’s Palace, Michael and Alexander finish their visit with an exploration of the history of Venetian sin and pleasure. Writer Tony Perrottet gives Alexander a tour of one of Venice’s historic gambling houses, frequented by cliental such as Casanova. Casanova knew the dark side of this city first hand. Michael and Alexander visit a hidden network of rooms in Doge’s Palace, including the torture chamber where Casanova was interrogated. With the help of 3D recreations of the Doge’s Palace, Casanova’s escape route is re-traced in virtual reality.

Hospital BBC2, 21.00
With exceptional access to one of the UK’s biggest and busiest NHS Trusts, Hospital will bring audiences intensely close to the issues and challenges that continually dominate the headlines. Each episode will show with exceptional candour the ever-increasing demands on the NHS’s services, from intricate and morally complex medical ethics to health tourism; from A&E overcrowding to cancelled operations. Shown from multiple perspectives and for the first time, the audience will see the extraordinary dilemmas and decision-making which happen every day for the consultants, surgeons and bed managers, all of which have profound consequences for patients and treatments. Crews shot across five hospitals in Imperial College Healthcare Trust London to understand the complex decision making and the impact each one can have, following the key decision makers as they attempt to care for nearly 20,000 people every week. But standing in their way are limited resources, an increasing number of emergency patients and a clock that never stops ticking. Produced in partnership with The Open University.

Spy In The Wild BBC1, 20.00
In one of the most innovative natural history series ever presented, Spy In The Wild deploys over 30 ultra-realistic animatronic ‘Spy Creatures’ to go undercover in the animal world, filming their unique behaviour closer than ever before. In episode one the Spy Creatures investigate the rarely-seen emotions and feelings of animals - and ask if they are as complicated and strong as our own. Through these Spy Creatures’ eyes we discover the origins of love. Spy Pup is immersed in wild dog life, where he has to act fast to be accepted by the curious pack, as imminent danger is lurking in the wild from different sides. Baby Spy Crocs allow us to join the infant reptiles on a rollercoaster ride inside the mouth of their mother, as she uses unusual tactics to transport her newborns to safety. Our Spy Creatures take us closer than ever before to animal sadness and mourning: an accident strikes as Spy Baby Monkey becomes the centre of the story when it meets a troop of over 120 langur monkeys. Spy Tortoise takes further into the story of grief as he witnesses what’s seems to be awareness of death, never before seen on film. Spy Egg becomes Spy Chick while imprisoned with a mother hornbill, who tries to rear her new brood in a safe, self-induced solitary confinement for two months. Spy Penguin is immersed in the turbulent action of the mating season, as a male Adélie penguin falls victim to a pebble thief who ruins his chances of love for the season - despite the help of Spy Penguin. Spy Tortoise and Spy Bushbaby are deployed to keep watch on chimpanzees, where they witness the chimps’ jealousy, protective instincts as well as their softer side, in a thoughtprovoking scene where a chimpanzee adopts a new pet.

Unforgotten ITV1, 21.00
With their victim now identified, Cassie and Sunny’s search for David Walker’s killer is underway. Having pulled a selection of partial messages and numbers from the pager found with his body, the team hope that BT will be able to track down their sources in the hope that this may shed some light on his final movements. Whilst they wait, David’s wife Tessa Nixon is interviewed by Cassie and Sunny where she reveals that David suffered from depression, which had put a big strain on their marriage. As a result, when he went missing, she assumed that he has either suffered a breakdown or killed himself – she never considered that he’d been murdered. It’s her son, Jason, who is most affected by his father’s murder though, struggling to come to terms with the fact that David didn’t leave them voluntarily all those years ago.

Aerosmith ticket scrum a real pain in the BOT By Colin Kirby EARLY-BIRD fans of Aero smith hit the official ticket site at 9am on 30th December, hoping for a place in the Heliodoro Stadium, Santa Cruz, on 8th July for the mega group’s last-ever concert. But many were left disappointed as the www. entrees.es site crashed several times under the weight of demand, led by organised, bulk-buying ticket touts, armed with the notorious BOT software. Tenerife has pulled off a real coup by getting the final farewell of the US rockers’ Aero Verderci Baby tour. “The bad boys from Boston”, who have been rocking since 1970, are now hanging up their guitars. When rumours first surfaced of a Canarian concert, Gran Canaria semed to have the edge, with its bigger football stadium. But, thanks to backing by Caja Canarias bank, a twomillion-euro guarantee swung the deal to CD Tenerife’s Santa Cruz stadium, where 32,000 fans will enjoy the
historic goodbye. Within hours of the official ticket site opening, others sprouted on the internet, selling tickets with mark-ups of up to 25 %, on the evidence of previous big events. Package deals, includ-
ing accommodation, are likely to follow between now and the big night. But the scramble has brought into focus a long-running curse to music and sport fans. The BOT software can
be bought online for just a few hundred euros, and, once pre-loaded with names, addresses, and credit-card details from dubious sources, they can be set in motion to bombard a website. It enables them to snap up thousands of tickets in quick time, before pumping them out on new websites. Calls for better legal protection have grown louder during the last year, but the ever-changing, technical possibilities makes for easy profits via lucrative markets. British rockers Iron Maiden are among several artists looking into ways of combating the threat to their loyal fans. One idea is to do away with paper tickets and get fans to back up their entry details on the night with an ID and credit card. Some tickets were still available as we went to press last night (Thursday). And for those lucky fans who have already nailed theirs, history awaits with a 10pm treat … they Don’t Wanna Miss A Thing.

Clayderman in tune for Tenerife concert IT´S not just rock stars flocking to perform in Tenerife, French classical pianist Richard Clayderman will be performing at the Santa Cruz Auditorium on Sunday, 26th March from 8.30pm. The Parisborn, international star will be calling in as part of his Romantique Tour. The 63-year-old has sold a staggering 70 million records, 267 of them earning him a gold disc. But he loves to perform live with the sort of schedules that would have The Rolling Stones reaching for the vitamin pills. Clayderman´s big attraction is that he bridges the worlds of
classical and popular music. His Adeline ballad became an international hit in 1978 and launched him into the mainstream. The Santa Cruz Auditorium is an ideal setting because it is highly-respected for its perfect acoustics, and it is visually stunning, inside and out. Tickets, ranging from 32-70 euros, are already on sale from www. auditoriodetenerife. com or phone 902 317 327. You can also get them at the box office from Monday to Friday, 10am-3pm, and on Saturdays, from 10am2pm.
Mikkey Dee rolling in for seaside Rock AFTER more than 30 years of wizardry with his drumsticks, Mikkey Dee made light work of signing a constant stream of posters, records, and T-shirts at a Meet-And-Greet afternoon at his new Rock Lounge, in Los Cristianos. The Swedish-born rocker, best-known as the driving beat of Motorhead, was taking a festive break from touring with German legends Scorpions, to see his dream venue become a reality. A wide range of ages and nationalities poured in to enjoy the Las Vistas beach views, while listening to classic rock, belting out from the sound system. Drummers are usually the overlooked ones in a group, but Mikkey
has always strived to play a full part in every band he has graced. Getting involved with song-writing, plus his mammoth drum solos
have always been a stand-out part of his live work. Beach views in a large tourist zone might not seem the obvious
choice for a rock venue, but it’s just what Mikkey sought. “I’ve been coming to Tenerife for over 20 years and feel very comfortable in Las Americas and Los Cristianos,” he said. “I started thinking about opening a venue here about 18 months ago, and I didn’t want a dungeon or basement. “ I wanted somewhere more classy, where rock fans could get together and enjoy good music.
This San Telmo place came up and it looked perfect for what I had in mind. “The idea is for somewhere to relax in the day and enjoy great views from inside or out on the little terrace… and then classic rock at night with some live bands.” Tenerife´s notorious building delays slowed down the make-over for the former restaurant and bar. And major changes in Mikkey´s life left him with some big decisions to make when Lemmy, the Motorhead lead singer and lifelong friend, died in December 2015. “I knew I still wanted to be involved in music, but I wasn’t sure at what level,” he said. “Scorpions asked me to
guest with them on 12 North American gigs, including a run at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. “But I knew from the start that it would lead to a longer link-up. We clicked and it just felt right, so I joined them full-time. Mikkey will be around the Rock Lounge for a few months before heading out on a European tour in the spring with Scorpions. In the meantime, he will take great pride in seeing his new venture grow. The stage area is still not finished but the black decor, booth-like seating at the back, and late opening, complement the classic rock tracks. www. rockloungetenerife. com

Accion del Sol news
The New Year at K9 Our good work is continuing
ACCION del Sol had a very busy year in 2016, with over 3,100 children from many surrounding schools and colleges visiting the refuge. They participated in our educational programme, with the aim of improving their knowledge of animal welfare.
MEET Heidi: Hi, I’m Heidi. I have been at the refuge for a long time now. I was abandoned by my previous family over four years ago, and I don’t know why.
Maybe I grew too big for them. I so want to find my loving, safe-and-secure, forever home soon. My people at K9 say I am such a good dog, and they cannot understand why I keep being overlooked. I am told I have a lovely nature, and get on so well with everyone. I am very clever, and I do love to learn new things. That’s especially true when there are tasty treats involved! I share my room with my best friend, Mendoza. We get on really well, and one of our favourite things is to go out for walks together. We love running around off-lead, and sniffing and exploring. I always come back when called because I know that is very important if you want to be a good dog. My most favourite thing, though, is just to sit on the rocks to chill and relax with my K9 walkers. I’m now six years old (although you’d never know it), and I appreciate how good it is to just take in the views and shoot the breeze. I get on well with male dogs, but can be a little wary of other females. However, if we are given time to get to know each other slowly, we get on just fine. Do you have a place in your home and heart for me, please? I promise that, in return, I’ll be a loyal, loving and devoted companion. We would have such fun together.
If you would like to meet me, please get in touch with my people at K9 in any of the ways mentioned below. How you can help us in 2017 Last year saw over 150 beautiful dogs arrive at the gates of the refuge, under many different circumstances, but never through any fault of their own. Happily, almost the same number have found their new, forever families. Our wish for 2017 is to see all our beautiful dogs in their own, safe-andloving, forever homes. While they wait patiently for that day to come, there are lots of ways you can help make their time at the refuge as happy as possible. Here are just a few: Our pupsters love their time out of their kennels, especially when they have the company of people. Why not visit us any day between 10-1pm, and take some of our guys for a walk. They’d love to show you their favourite tracks and sniffing places! It doesn’t matter how much or little time you have - two hours or 20 minutes are equally appreciated. Fresh air, exercise, good company – great for the dogs and for you! Donate, or buy, at the K9 shop in Alcala main square. We always appreciate donations - hand them in at the shop, or at the refuge. You’re sure to find great bargains, and the friendly people there will make you very welcome. We all know it isn’t always practical to have our own family dog, no matter how much we would love to, but how about fostering? The refuge environment can be noisy and stressful at times, and a small number of our
dogs find it hard to settle. We always need foster homes for these guys until they find their forever families. Depending on the circumstances, the foster period can be for days or months, and it makes the world of difference for that one dog. Fostering is very rewarding. Why not consider it? If you would like more information, please do get in touch in any of the ways mentioned below. Remember our car-boot sales. They are held on the last Sunday of every month at Los Gigantes bus station, from 9-12.30pm. There are always some great bargains to be had. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all - their stories and pictures - on our website at www.k9tenerife. com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 10-2pm. Alternatively, you can get in touch by telephoning us on 667 638 468, or emailing info@ k9tenerife.com You will also find stories of our dogs, their antics and heart-warming re-homings on Facebook, by following Diary of a K9 Tenerife Dogwalker and also K9 Tenerife. Flight buddy required Toby has been offered a new home in Germany, but he needs to get there! Are you flying to Padderborn, Hanover or Dusseldorf in the near future? If so, are you willing to be a flight buddy for our lovely lad? There’s very little to it. If you can help, please contact us.
We also arranged the adoption of 305 dogs in Tenerife and Germany, but our work continues with the daily arrival of abandoned dogs in terrible conditions, brought to us by Protection Civil. We still have almost 200 dogs at the refuge, patiently waiting for new homes, some of whom have been with us since we first opened, 10 years ago. Please do come and visit, even if you are unable to
adopt one of your own. There are plenty of dogs who would enjoy a walk, and what a wonderful way to burn off those unwanted kilos after the festive season. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the right-hand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol
Heartless breeder housed 150 dogs
OVER 150 dogs, bred at two illegal centres in Madrid and in a poor condition, have been rescued by the Guardia Civil.
Local residents in Navalfuente and El Molar topped off the officers, who discovered that the owner did not have the appropriate breeding licence. Inspections, carried out by the Environmental and Animal Protection Department and local authorities determined that 85 of the animals were either sick, pregnant or had given birth recently.

Cats Welfare news
Another good year! As we move into 2017, it’s worth a few moments to reflect on our work over the last 12 months.
We have gone from strength to strength, re-homing a staggering 343 cats and kittens,
including 20 to Germany, one to Switzerland and one to Belgium. It was a mammoth task, but one we are very proud of. A total of 896 cats have been neutered, including more than 40, in one week alone! It’s a never-ending task, but we’re really
starting to see the reduction of cats and kittens on the streets, here in the South of Tenerife. A massive “thankyou” must go to each and every person who helps, donates and supports us in every way. But special thanks go to the vet practices we collaborate with who tirelessly support us, morning, noon and night. 2017 will be an exciting year. Xmas raffle draw Congratulations to Tex and his partner Val, the winners of our Xmas hamper raffle, kindly donated by Michelle and Dave Bentley. A massive 288 euros was raised, which was the highest amount ever for our Xmas raffle. Thank you to each and every person who bought a ticket. Adoptions Please consider
adopting an adult cat. When cared for properly, cats can live well into their late teens, and sometimes early twenties. Midnight is a beautiful, young, black female. She has been spayed, vaccinated and microchipped, and is looking for a home. She was left behind on a complex to fend for herself when the owners emigrated, and is now in our foster care. Let’s change her luck, and find her a forever home. As usual, all cats go on trial so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision. All our adult cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.catswelfare -tenerife.com/ pets. Whether it’s an adult or a kitten you are looking for, ring or Whatsapp Maria on 646629129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), message us on
A million thanks to all who supported Amigos TENERIFE’S Amigos de Gillian Banks children’s charity wishes to thank lots of people for their help in boosting its Christmas appeal for the underprivileged Guaidyl children and their families. Sandra Coats, the charity’s fund-raiser and treasurer, said: “The response was absolutely amazing, and we owe so many people so many thanks “We are so grateful to Madhatters, Callao Salvaje, with big thanks to Mo and Steve Thompson for all shopping and delivery collections. Also, to the residents and friends of Callao Salvaje for their huge support attending and donating at the Madhatters bar event, and to the artists who donated their time. “Special thanks to El Medano’s Hesperia language school, including Carmen Jorge Alvarez, Maggie and Neil Beecher, plus friends and students there. Their help with this appeal was absolutely fabulous. “Thanks again to customers and staff at
The Waterfall, on Golf del Sur for yet another fabulous result, with an amazing amount of food and goodies for the centre, “And to Carol Schleisman, at Currencies Direct, and the Women in Business group for all your help with collections and donations. “Iceland in Los Cristianos, with Helen Widdop, Rachel Bell and all the staff, were just brilliant! “Their fantastic idea of asking customers to donate the weekly offers. Reaped 50 boxes of biscuits, over 100 selection boxes and 78 chocolate oranges. And that’s just for starters!
“Also, Iceland at Las Chafiras again allowed us to help customers with bag-packing, enabling us again to raise further Christmas funds for Christmas for the children.” Sandra, recovering her breath, added: “George Scooters transported us again, together with the children and staff of Guaidyl, to Santa Cruz on a Christmas shopping spree, including a visit to McDonalds, in the Meridiano Centre. “And thanks to Sharon Hutchinson, from Silencio’s card and candy store, for the beautiful sweet parcels for the children’s Santa Cruz visit.
“Sue Hyde and her mum brought back from the UK personal gifts for the children. And in Palm Mar, Clouseaus Bar’s Ang Philpott hosting two Christmas markets there, so thanks to her and to all the stallholders and customers for adding to the Christmas fund. “We can’t possibly forget all you lovely people of Tenerife for donating so generously and making this happen, so a big, big thanks to you all. “Finally, I’d like to thank Benny Rivero Hyde, who will be running in an 18km event in Gran Canaria next month, because he has offered to compete as a sponsored runner for our charity.” Sandra also mentioned the super day she and her helpers had at Guaidyl, giving out the food parcels. She added: “We also enjoyed a day in Santa Cruz with some of the older children, who spent the Christmas money the charity supplied, with, of course, the obligatory McDonalds happy meal thrown in.”

Live Arico news
Happy New Year to all our supporters OUR Xmas dinnerdance at Taboos on Golf del Sur was an amazing night, raising just over 1000 euros in the process! We would like to thank Jackie and all her staff for looking after us, and entertainers James Harper, Pip Brown and Alejandro, who got the place on its feet. The party was attended by many of our volunteers, from the charity shops and the kennels, and it was nice to be able to thank them personally for all their hard work through the year. We also shared a few facts and figures. We vaccinated 146 dogs against viruses and diseases such as kennel cough, distemper and rabies, inserted 82 microchips and sterilised 79 dogs. Heartworm is a major problem in this part of the world, and its prevention is not cheap. During 2016, we vaccinated 74 dogs against this condition, at a cost of 3528 euros. Sadly, we took in 25 heartworm-positive dogs, and spent 2148 euros curing them. We paid our hard-working vets a total of 28,000 euros last year, and, when you consider that they work for us at heavily-discounted rates, it gives you some idea of the amount of work done. We found forever homes for 52 dogs! This makes us very happy. Please consider making a dog’s life better by giving him a lovely safe home. He will love you forever. We couldn’t do anything without your help, so, if you bought anything in our charity shops, if you dropped coins in our collection boxes, or if you bought raffle tickets at one of
our benefits, we thank you from our hearts. Please, don’t ever stop. An easy way to help is to set up a monthly payment using Paypal, via our website www. livearico.com, from as little as 3 euros a month. From all of us here at Live Arico, here’s to a prosperous 2017. Peace and love to all. 2017 Fundraising kicks off at The Cube Our first fundraiser of the year is on Saturday, 14th January, from 2pm, at The Cube, Pueblo Canario, Playa de las Americas. We will be building funds to sterilise more and more dogs. Please come and have a great afternoon, buy the odd raffle ticket and help us to achieve our aims. Naughty food to be avoide MOST of us love to eat or drink naughty foods, especially over the festive season, and at any other time of the year, for that matter.
But how many of us are aware of the damage they cause to our teeth, let alone the diet? Here’s a list of no-go foods if you want to stay healthy, and keep your teeth intact! Diet soft drinks They’re tempting for those wanting to sip on something sweet without the big hit of regular soft drinks. But while there’s no sugar to cause tooth decay, like regular soft drinks and even fruit juice, diet soft drinks still have high acid levels that can erode tooth enamel. This can lead to exposure of the inner tooth layer, causing pain and sensitivity, and it can also cause cavities. Brushing straight after drinking isn’t wise, either, because the acid can soften enamel, making it easier to brush away. If you must have diet drinks, swish
your mouth with water afterwards to wash the acid away. You could also sip them through a straw to minimise contact with your teeth. Potato chips They might start out crunchy, but, once chewed, they turn into a soft mess that can lodge and linger in the tiniest crevices on and between your teeth. What’s more, while we think of them as savoury, most chips are actually quite high in sugar, which means their tendency to stick around on your teeth is even more of a problem. Ice cubes Do you get to the end of your ice-chilled drink and find those remaining ice cubes irresistible? Plenty of us do. But while sucking them is fine, biting them is not. Ice is so hard that biting it can easily chip off enamel or crack your teeth. If you can’t trust yourself to stop at sucking an ice cube, don’t take it into your mouth in the first place. Finish your drink and move it away from temptation. Dried fruit Fruit is healthy and packed with vitamins
and other nutrients. But suck the moisture out of it and you’re left with a sticky product, comprising concentrated sugar, entwined with bits of fibre that make it stick to the surface of your teeth. Also, some dried fruits such as dried mangoes and craisins (dried cranberries), often have extra sugar added. Eat dried fruit in moderation and brush well afterwards. But generally, fresh fruit is a better choice. Popcorn and corn on the cob
It’s made from popped corn kernels, so it can’t be too bad, right? True, except when the popcorn is coated with coloured sugar-dust or sticky toffee. Then it’s a “sugar bomb”. Popcorn with no added sugar is, dentally speaking, not a bad snack. That’s as long as you take care to floss out any bits that wedge between your teeth, and don’t bite on any unpopped kernels, which can cause cracks and breaks in teeth. Biting into corn on the cob should also be approached with caution if you have crowns, or large fillings, on your front teeth, because the focused pressure may damage these. You can always cut the kernels off the cob to eat them. Sports drinks These, along with energy drinks, are highly acidic and many are also high in sugar. An acid attack that can erode the enamel on your teeth generally lasts for around 20 minutes. Every time you take a sip of the drink, the acid damage begins all over again. Bear in mind, too, that
Not to be sniffed IT’S the end of a long, festive season, and you’re rifling through the fridge in the hope of finding something to eat… something which doesn’t involve any “cooking” more complicated than two minutes in the microwave.
Result! There’s a bowl of leftovers from the depths of the fridge and you’re sure certain it’s fairly fresh, so you peel back the cling-film to give it a good sniff. But are you right in trusting your nose to save you from a bout of gastroenteritis (or worse)? Definitely not, say food-safety experts.
And, says Lydia Buchtmann, from the Australian Food Safety Council: “Smell is not a good way to tell whether food is safe to eat. A lot of people rely on the sniff test, but it means nothing whatsoever.” When a plate of leftovers starts to pong, it means spoilage bacteria have taken hold. These are different from the bacteria which cause food poisoning. Spoilage is an undesirable change in composition of food. An example of spoilage bacteria is Pseudomonas, which can cause spoilage in meat, fish, eggs, milk and cheeses. It usually causes the putrid smell and slime that can accompany chilled meats (of the non-vacuum packed variety).
Spoilage bacteria won’t usually make you sick, though food with them won’t be particularly pleasant. And, warns Lydia: “It’s not a good idea to put it in your mouth.
Normally, if a food smells off, such as milk, it’s starting to spoil and decompose.” And according to Food Standards Australia New Zealand, food-poisoning bacteria
don’t change the appearance, smell or taste of food. These bacteria usually come from animal faeces and soil. In foods which are potentially hazardous, some of the bacteria causing food poisoning can flourish between 5-60 degrees Celsius. This temperature range is known as the “danger zone,” so cold foods should be kept below 5°C and hot foods kept above 60 degrees. “Within a couple of hours, it can be contaminated enough that you can get a bout of food poisoning,” says Lydia. “The food will still smell fine and taste fine, but it can make you very sick.” Storing foods at the right temperature helps prevent illness because it slows down the rate
at which bacteria can multiply. And they won’t grow to the large numbers to make you ill. Risky foods left in the “danger zone” for up to two hours should be safe to refrigerate, but immediately use or dispose of food sitting out between two to four hours, and bin anything that’s been out for over four hours. For all this advice, some bacteria and certain viruses can make people sick, even if present in tiny amounts. This is why it’s also important to avoid contaminating foods with items known to harbour these bacteria. Less commonly, parasites such as Giardia lamblia (from raw, ready-to-eat produce), can also cause illness.

Radical detox could damage your health By Val Sainsbury unless you’re having a fairly long and intense work-out, you probably don’t need the extra fuel and electrolytes that a sports drink provides anyway. Muesli bars They look healthy with all those nuts, grains and oats. But the substance holding all that together into a bar is generally sugar. The sugar makes every bite sticky, and it hangs around the grooves of your teeth for a long time. Wine Sparkling and white wine, especially, contains erosive acid,
which can soften the teeth’s protective, hard enamel. This acid can also leave teeth more vulnerable to staining, which can be a problem for those who enjoy red wine, along with other heavily-pigmented foods and drinks such as curries, coffee and tea. Alcohol, in general, causes dehydration, which means your mouth will have less of the saliva that protects your teeth from decay. It’s worth noting that heavy alcohol consumption is a risk factor for oral cancer. Low-fat yoghurts
We tend to think of dairy foods as good for our teeth, but the low-fat varieties often contain a lot of added sugar. The only way they can make yoghurt tasty with so much fat taken out of it is to bump up the sugar content. And often the amount they add is outrageous. The result is a product that’s a disaster for teeth. Some low-fat yoghurts have less sugar than others, though, so check the labels. You could also consider choosing natural yoghurt and adding fresh fruit for a bit of sweetness.
sniffed at! So if smelling your food isn’t going to help discern whether it’s off, what can you do to reduce your risk of food poisoning? It’s vital to keep your fridge running at the right temperature, especially in Tenerife when the temperature soars. Here are some worthwhile tips: *Use a fridge thermometer to check that your fridge is running at 5°,and don’t cram it so full that the cool air can’t circulate around food properly *Make room for food in your fridge by removing bottles of drink. It stops people opening the fridge and letting in warm air, so bacteria can’t grow *Defrost meat in the fridge, remembering it may take several days
for large portions *Be sure to store raw, uncooked foods (such as chicken and meat) separately from readyto-eat foods, such as salad vegetables or fruit *When hot leftovers have stopped steaming, divide into small containers and refrigerate or freeze with a dated label. Use refrigerated leftovers within two to three days *Bacillus cereus spores can germinate in cooked rice, producing toxins that aren’t killed by reheating. And remember to refrigerate rice salads And if you want to avoid serving people a portion of food poisoning with their meal, take the following precautions when preparing food: *Make sure those
handling food have washed their hands with soapy water and dried them thoroughly, and again after handling poultry, meat or anything visibly dirty, such as eggs and vegetables *Keep your kitchen surfaces and equipment clean to prevent cross-contamination, especially after using them for raw foods such as meat and chicken. And you must use a clean cloth and hot, soapy water to wipe down surfaces *Be particularly careful when preparing chicken. Wash chopping-boards, knives and your hands thoroughly after handling uncooked poultry to prevent contaminating other food. And don’t wash the chicken before cooking
THE potential harms of undertaking a radical, new-year detox have been underlined by concerned doctors.
They highlight the case of a 47-year-old woman treated last year, who became critically ill after taking herbal remedies and drinking too much water. She needed intensive care at Milton Keynes hospital. The medics say that although she recovered with treatment, her story was a reminder of the dangers of drastic detoxing. While it is tempting to cleanse yourself of the festive excesses, the concept, not necessarily healthy, is not backed by medical science, says their advice in the British Medical Journal Case Reports. The woman they treated had taken a cocktail of herbs and alternative remedies, including: milk thistle, molkosan, glutamine, vitamin B compound, vervain and valerian
root. She was also said to have taken in lots of water, green tea and sage tea over the few days before becoming ill. Shortly before being admitted to hospital, the woman collapsed and had a seizure. Medical tests revealed that she had dangerously-low levels of salt (sodium) in her body. Her doctors, researching the herbal remedies used by the patient, also discovered the case of a man with a history of anxiety, who had had seizures because of his low sodium level. His symptoms developed after consuming a large amount of a herbal remedy that contained: valerian root, lemon balm, passion flower, hops and chamomile. The medics’ report stated. “The complementary medicine market is very popular in the UK, and the concept of the newyear ‘detox’, with allnatural products, is appealing to those less concerned with evidence-based medicine and more with comple-
mentary medicine. “Excessive water intake as a way of ‘purifying and cleansing’ the body is also a popular regime, with the belief that harmful waste products can, thus, be washed from the body.” But the doctors warn: “Despite marketing suggesting otherwise, all-natural products are not without sideeffects.” The British Dietetic Association says the whole idea of detoxing is nonsense, a representative adding: “There are no pills or specific drinks, patches or lotions that can do a magic job. “The body has numerous organs, such as the skin, gut, liver and kidney, which ‘detoxify’ the body from head to toe continually. “Being well-hydrated is a sensible strategy, but drinking too much water can be as dangerous as not drinking enough. “It sounds predictable, but, for the vast majority of people, a sensible diet and regular physical activity are the only ways to properly maintain and maximise your health.”

By Val Sainsbury PEOPLE living near a busy road, even 50 metres away, are far more likely than others to develop dementia because of the traffic fumes and noise.
Research scientists, in a new study, reveal that those residents exposed to traffic are up to 12% more likely to suffer the dreadful disease. The study, which tracked nearly seven million people for more than a decade, is the largest-ever to suggest environmental factors could play a major role in dementia risk. An estimated 850,000 people in the UK have dementia, and this figure is expected to soar to one million by 2025 - and two million by 2050! The disease is thought to be linked to genetics largely, but increasing evidence suggests other

factors such as smoking, obesity and lack of exercise may increase the risk. The study, published in the Lancet medical journal, suggests airpollution and noise may also play a role. The Canadian researchers study
leader, Dr Hong Chen, from the University of Toronto and Public Health Ontario, said: “Our findings show the closer you live to roads with heavy day-today traffic, the greater the risk of developing dementia. “With our widespread
exposure to traffic and the greater tendency for people to live in cities these days, this has serious public health implications. “Increasing population growth and urbanisation has placed many people close to heavy traffic, and even a mod-

OVER the festive period, we may have spent a little too much time browsing on Facebook, and new research shows that this could have made us miserable.
Being with close friends and family offered us the chance to disconnect from the internet, but some of us couldn’t resist taking a look. Videos, photos and updates are shared on Facebook, especially over Christmas. But regularly checking could leave you feeling a little blue, because of those feelings of envy, created from “unrealistic social comparisons” when looking at the updates of others, warn researchers.
The study says: “Regular use of social networking, such as Facebook, can negatively affect your emotional well-being and satisfaction with life.”. But taking a break from the social network can have a positive effect on a person’s well-being, suggests Morten Tromholt,
from the University of Copenhagen. More than 1,000 participants were divided into two groups. One continued using it as usual, and the other refrained from using Facebook for a week. After that week, the treatment group showed significant improvement statistically
in well-being, researchers found. This depended on the amount of time they had previously spent on Facebook, and whether or not they were passive users and tended to envy others using the site. “Confirming previous research, this study found that ‘lurking’ on Facebook may cause negative emotions,” said Brenda K. Wiederhold, from the California and Virtual Reality Medical Institute. “However, on the bright side, as previous studies have shown, actively connecting with close friends, whether in real life or on Facebook, may actually increase one’s sense of well-being.” The study was discussed in the peerreviewed journal Cyberpsychology, Behaviour, and Social Networking.
est effect from nearroad exposure could lead to a large, publichealth burden.” The research team tracked 6.6 million adults, aged 20-85, in Ontario, for 11 years, between 2001 and 2012. Those living within 50m of a major road defined as a main urban road or a motorway were 7% more likely to develop dementia than those who lived 300m away. Those between 50100m away had a 4% increased risk, and those between 101-200m a 2% additional risk. The UK is also notoriously bad at controlling airpollution, with 37 cities across Britain persistently breaching EU legal limits of air toxins. The scientists also found that people who lived within 50m of a major road in towns and cities, and those who lived within 50m of a major road for the entire study period, had the highest risk: some 12% greater than those who lived more than 300m away. But those living more than 200m from a major road had no increased dementia risk, and no link was found between proximity to busy roads and Parkinson’s disease or multiple sclerosis. In Britain, where the population density
is five times that of Ontario, many more people live near main roads, including the vast majority of people who have city homes. The new findings add to evidence that longterm exposure to airpollution and traffic noise may contribute to brain shrinkage and mental impairment. They also think pollution may provoke inflammation in the brain, a problem which may trigger dementia. Other studies have found that persistent noise is linked to cognitive impairment, which may also explain the findings. The NHS watchdog NICE last month warned that air-pollution now contributes towards 25,000 deaths a year in England, which is almost 5% of all deaths. And it called for a reduction in speed limits, and traffic restricted around schools. British experts described the findings as ‘important’ and ‘provocative’, but stressed that they did not demonstrate a causal link between exposure to traffic and dementia. Professor Rob Howard of University College London added: “This study presents one more important reason why we must clean up the air in our cities.”

New Year, so spring clean
WHAT’S YOUR OWN STYLE? By Carl from Robot LOOKING at a recent TV show on a UK channel, I noticed one thing about a collection of girls on a programme … they all had the same hair! All long and wavy - smooth then big, bouncy curls. There was I, wondering what had happened to individuality and being your own fashion statement? It seems that some girls have got into a rut of “cloning” themselves, and being scared of standing out from the crowd. Hair is an advert for
your personality, a way of showing your feelings about yourself and how you want to be portrayed - not of blending in. Your hair should be styled and coloured around your features and tones, and your stylist should take these into account. Each client should be treated individually, and styled accordingly. Don’t just opt for what everyone else is having, or what seems fashionable. Your hair
should complement your fashion style, as well as your lifestyle. Over-styling can put on years and make a natural face look artificial. Go with your facial features and natural skin tones when choosing a hair cut/ colour. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Your professional stylist will guide you all the way. Do as I do, and check out what hairstyles those around you are wearing. Are you falling into the “clone-zone”, or do you want to show your own, personal style? Make your hair your best feature in 2017. We at Robot Hair would like to help you do it!
SALE INTO REBAJAS! By Carl Pattison HAPPY New Year, and, if you didn’t know, the sales will have well and truly started, the day after Reyes. We are sure to see massive reductions right across the board, especially after 2016’s disastrous Christmas retail sales here. The shelves were still full before and after the festive period, with many stores offering 40, 50 and 60% off, even before the 25th! The fashion industry suffered, with people choosing not to splash out, and to save, instead, for those allimportant sales. So, how do you grab a bargain and not end up throwing it to the back of your wardrobe? Never buy something that’s high fashion and of the moment. Stick to classics that will last
for years, and not only a few months. Try on the garment/ shoes, as attempting to return them a week later, only to find they don’t have your size, can be frustrating. Patience in the fitting room will save you the hours spent traipsing back for a refund, or hunting down another item. Remember, you’re not always entitled to your money back on sale items. If you’re out to pick up a bargain, then search with your head, not your eyes. What seems like a good deal in the store can be a fashion mistake
at home. Would you really wear that item if it weren’t reduced? It’s only a bargain if you would have bought it at full price. A lot of fashion is reduced because it wasn’t popular, so it didn’t sell. Take a good look and ask yourself why it didn’t fly off the shelves. Beware, too, of “fake” sales of goods which are especially fabricated for the stores, and have never been sold at those prices!Keep this in mind as you fly round the shops. Have fun shopping, and see if you can track down a genuine bargain.

By Miruna Voicu OKAY, so it’s not Spring, but since we don’t have proper seasons here in Tenerife, New Year is as good a time as any to have a blitz of your property and get it back into tip-top shape!
Apart from clearing up after the festivities, it’s also time to cast a critical eye over your property and see what you can do to improve or update it. Whether you rent out, or just use the property yourself, a coat of paint is the easiest and cheapest way to make a big difference to a room. Pale colours reflect light and make spaces look bigger, while dark colours do the opposite. If you have a very long room, paint the furthest wall in a strong colour to make it seem nearer. Don’t use too much colour in a small space or it will be overpowering. Use mirrors wisely to reflect light, and to make spaces look deeper and bigger. Use framed mirrors to add decoration. Check your furniture and see if it needs an update. If your sofa is of good quality and just looks a bit tired, consider getting a free quote for re-upholstery before you decide to buy new. That way, you know
exactly what you are getting in terms of shape, comfort and size, and you can give your room a completely new look for a fraction of the cost. If your sofa is beyond hope, or you need to increase your occupancy by buying a sofa bed, get a furnishing company to call by and give you a quote, and they can measure up at the same time. Made-to-measure curtains will always look much better than ready-made ones that make do, and may not be as expensive as you think. So, with just these two items,
you could completely change your whole property in terms of colour and appearance. Think about replacing some of your furniture, especially if you feel it’s just shabby and not a bit chic! Or, if it is of good quality, why not consider spraying it in a colour to make it look more modern? With these items, coupled with some coordinated cushions and artwork, your property will look brand new, and ready for another year. All the items are available, together with free interior design advice, from Deco Nuevo on 922 789 729.

THE guarantee law, which doesn’t exclude specific components or parts, mentions only the actual condition of the vehicle, as described by the seller to the consumer.
Thus, second-hand vehicle parts which are worn or damaged, and are notified to the seller, are never covered because it is deemed that the consumer knew about them at the time of purchase. As the law doesn’t exclude specific components or parts, common sense prevails when the law is applied to the purchase of second-hand cars. Not everything is covered on the car because it will wear out, even under normal
6th January - 12th January 2017
What is covered by the guarantee law?
use. For this reason, during the guarantee period, the seller will repair primary defects or faults only, and not those originated by tyres, brake pads, brake discs, clutch, liquids, and a long list of other items that erode or wear through friction or contact, or simply usage. The exclusion of repairing these items is produced when the necessity to replace any of them occurs within a reasonable time. But not when the fault is caused through premature, irregular or extraordinary wear, and not because of the new owner’s driving style. For example, a part which would normally be replaced at 50,000km wouldn’t be covered under the guarantee if the need to replace it occurs once the kilometres have been reached. But if the replacement is required at, say, 2,000km, that would be included under the
guarantee, as long as it’s not down to the driver’s negligence or incorrect use of the vehicle. How does the cover period work with a legal guarantee? Firstly, we need to differentiate between the period in which the seller is responsible for the defect, which would be the guarantee period, and the time period when the cause of the fault and origin have to be proved. *During the first six months, when a fault is reported, it is the
seller’s responsibility to prove to the consumer, and subsequent government authorities, that the fault was there at the time of purchase, which would negate the guarantee. This can be done via the guarantee document issued, or if it were an element of the car the client could not have ignored. *If a fault is reported after six months, it is the consumer’s responsibility to prove the fault existed when sold. So, during the first six months, it is understood that the fault existed at the time of sale unless proved otherwise. And from the seventh month onwards, the consumer must prove the fault existed. What are your rights if the vehicle develops a fault? The consumer has the right to a repair or replacement, or for a partial price refund in exchange for the fault not being fixed. However in the case
of second-hand cars, a replacement is never applicable. But if the repair is chosen, it is free for the consumer. Can the consumer choose where the car is repaired under guarantee? No! It is the seller’s choice to determine where it is repaired. The seller is never responsible for faults repaired at another garage, of which the consumer has not notified them; nor is the seller responsible for the cost of the repair of a notified fault if the consumer chooses to have it mended elsewhere. How long does the seller have to repair the vehicle? A repair under guarantee needs to be carried out in a reasonable time, which is set at 20 days. If the car is not repaired by then, and the repairer cannot prove that the delay is caused by something beyond his control; say a delay in
obtaining a part from a third party, then the consumer has the right to request a partial refund and accept the fault. Can the consumer demand a courtesy car during a guarantee repair? Simple answer: No! The law does not obligate the seller to provide an alternative vehicle while a repair is taking place. Can the seller use second-hand parts to repair the vehicle? Yes! A second-hand car seller has the right to repair the fault on the vehicle with a used part. However the law is clear that in the case of a safety part, it must be new. If the consumer requires a new part to be fitted, he must pay the difference in price between the new and second-hand part. I hope that this has, or will, help our readers. I realise this is a complex issue, so please contact me if you have any questions.

Behind the Mic...
LONG before his career as a master DJ, Ben Simington was fighting for his life on the stormy, high seas. At least, he thought he was. But the man who was to shape his life was Mr. Cool personified. As Ben clung to his stricken boat, his mentor, Dave Chambers, asked calmly, in his SergeantMajor voice: “Are you OK, old chap?” before righting the craft. “At the time I was terrified,” said Ben. “But, looking back, Dave’s nonchalant enquiry was one of the funniest things ever, considering the circumstances.” Born in Norwich, Oasis Fm DJ Ben, 37, is a proud Dad to Joss,10, fifteenmonth-old Elektra and stepdaughter Denise, 7. He went to a boarding school in the UK, after being awarded a sports scholarship there. “I played football and cricket and did cross country, all to a very high standard, and I ran the 800m in 2mins 10secs. But rugby was my passion.” Unfortunately, this calm, ordinary existence wasn’t to
last. When he was 14, Ben started to mix with some unruly pupils at the school. “I left at 16 because I got into a load of trouble with stuff I shouldn’t have been doing,” he said. Back home, things didn’t improve, and Ben was given a choice by his parents, Dave and Jo: either end up in jail, or agree to be sent abroad - alone. “They asked me what I wanted to do, and I said I liked the sea, and music,” said Ben. “My grandparents, George and Mary, had friends whose son, Dave, was a sailing instructor in Mallorca. “They asked him for help, so that I could escape Norfolk and leave all my problems behind. I was this typical little thug, with a skinhead haircut. I bought a Union Jack towel and shorts, and flew

That sinking feeling… to Mallorca. “I spent the next four years at sea with him. My first impression of Dave was that he was everything I didn’t want to be. And, when I got there, I thought I’d hate the place. He knew I was going to be a challenge.” On his first night, Ben went out drinking and didn’t get back until 4.30am. Two hours later, he was woken by an enthusiastic Dave,
announcing that they were going to sail a boat from the south of the island to the north. That changed his life forever. “I set foot on board, and didn’t really get off for another four years,” said proud Ben. “I did all my sailing courses, all the way up to Ocean Master. And that’s my actual profession - and passion. I’m a captain!” With his DJ career still on the horizon, he added: “After two weeks in Mallorca, I really warmed to Dave, and he took me under his wing. He was my beacon of light when I really was in trouble, and he’s a lovely man.” They once had to collect a boat from the Scilly Isles, off Lands End, and sail it, complete with crew, to Mallorca. But halfway
across the Bay of Biscay, they hit a Force-9 wind. “Even Dave was worried. It was the middle of the night, and I was climbing the rigging in the boatswain’s chair,” said Ben. “I loved it, because I didn’t realise how dangerous the situation was. “I was about 30 feet in the air, and, if we had suddenly changed direction, the whole mast could have come down.” But change direction they did, and he flew round the mast. Waves were coming over the boat, but he thought it was a great laugh. Later on the trip, a gust of wind blew them over, and the boat wouldn’t right itself. “This time I was panicking,” he revealed. “They’d all been thrown out of their bunks downstairs, and water was pouring into the boat. “The funniest thing was that, when Dave appeared, he was really calm… and that’s when he uttered that memorable question! “I went from a boy to a man in one second. Something changed in my head after that. I remember sitting on deck, early the next morning, listening to my music. “The sun was coming up, and I suddenly realised that I had nothing to worry about no house, car, kids,
debts or enemies. “It was the most humbling experience of my life, and I have never felt like that since. I had no responsibilities, and everything I owned was on that boat. It was enlightening, and my christening into the world of sailing.” Ben added: “After being away for six months, my stepdad, Philip, called me to ask permission to marry my Mum. I had left the UK a skinny, spotty skinhead with attitude, and gone back for the wedding a man. “I looked so different, with bright-blond hair and 10kgs of extra weight, and Mum didn’t recognise me at the airport! “When I first came to Tenerife in November 2001, I had grown up a lot, and I knew I was ‘home’.” Various compering and DJ work was to follow, and Ben has been resident DJ at the luxurious Papagayo Beach Club since it opened four years ago. He is also resident DJ for cosmetic company L’Oreal. His second stint as a DJ on Oasis Fm began last Autumn, following his initial spell at the station, several years ago. He is on air on Fridays 6-8pm, and Saturdays 8-10pm. As well as being the proud recipient of the Best DJ award at the 2015 TEAs, Ben has a DJ agency, a record label and a music studio, as well as running a DJ school. Is there no end to this intriguing man’s talent?
One whale of a time WHILE reading on deck one day, something told Ben to look under his boat. “I saw the huge eye of a Blue Whale, and it swam nearby for 10 minutes,” he said. “My scariest moment at sea was when I had my legs dangling over the back of a boat. Then I heard Dave shouting. A 16-foot White Shark, with its mouth wide open, was dangerously close to my feet!”

It’s same-again Gaffers THE Direct Telecom Pool League returned to action this week following the festive break, and in Division One it was business as usual for current league leaders Gaffers A.
They started the year with a tricky trip to Silencio for a match against Exiles A, who are difficult to beat at home. The away side picked off a couple of early frames for a bright start, but Exiles A were not going to make it easy for them and won frames of their own. But Gaffers A are determined to go through the season unbeaten and, when needed, they can always find an extra gear. They took command and Exiles A couldn’t find a reply as Gaffers won 8-4. As we have said before, it is now a battle for second spot, and, with their rivals dropping points, Tenerife Hammers A moved into second position on frame difference. The hosted Terrace Roosters, who have been on a poor run, yet they started stronger, taking a 3-1 lead. Roosters had their tails up and fancied a win. but Hammers A regrouped and took the next six frames to collect the win themselves. Roosters did manage to win another frame, but it’s back to the drawing board for them. Again! Phoenix Potters slipped into third spot with a rare home defeat against Palms Elite. Potters welcomed back Sergio, who put down an early marker by seven-balling Graeme in the opening frame. Palms Elite came back with the next two frames, only for the Potters to level. The second session followed the same pattern,
and, with four frames left, it was all-square. The visitors swiftly moved into a two-frame lead after wins for Wayne and Barry, but Pod beat Graeme to leave Eric a chance to claim a point against Harry. Eric has won a few late frames in recent games, but not this time as Harry rolled the black in to win it for Palms Elite, who moved to within two points of second place! Also in the hunt for second are Palms A, who have now lost just one of their last eight matches. But draws are killing them. On Tuesday, they continually grabbed defeat from the jaws of victory as they threw two points in the bin. They travelled to Rewind A and both sides were missing key players. The early frames were shared, and it wasn’t until the second set that there was some distance between the sides. Palms, who always improve during the match, took three of the four middle frames to lead 5-3. It looked a decisive move, but the hosts weren’t done. They took frame nine, only for Palms to win the next one. When we say win, we mean they actually took it by default. Rewind’s Pete gifted JT so many chances that, eventually, the bananamuncher was going to sink the black. He did so, but ask him how many shots he needed to pot a black, which was hanging over the bottom pocket? Palms were confident of getting the frame they needed to get over the line, but Rewind finished well, Captain Wilf winning the last frame to sneak a cheeky point. Terrace Bantams were looking for revenge at home against Rewind Rewired, after losing their last game before Christmas to them by a narrow margin.

fectively ending their title challenge. They had a home game against Palms Rebels, who have had a good first season, picking up a few scalps along the way. The home side started well with wins from John and Alex, but it turned around as the Rebels took four in a row for a halfway lead. The next few frames were traded as The Crown got to within a frame of their rivals. But Palms Rebels put on a strong finish and won the final three frames and the three points. Picasso’s A extended their lead at the top of the table as their rivals dropped points. They hosted Splash Bar and, in recent seasons, have had the measure of their opponents. And it was the same again this time. Splash Bar made it difficult, but Fran and her boys are enjoying their pool this season and are relishing the title battle. They have found a winning formula, and stuck to it again with another fine win. Although Hoppy’s A are in the bottom half of the table, they have had a say in the title race after holding

The home side started well with a win from Paul, but Gary struck back for Rewired straight away. The Bantams showed no sign of a New Year hangover as they took full control and won the next seven frames in a row to ensure the points. A special mention goes to Rewind’s Gary, who called a foul on himself that nobody else saw. Top sportsmanship, and a great advertisement for the league! Gaffers B moved into the top half of the table after coming from behind against Bluebell A. The visitors were in fine form as they took

early frames, and after the first two sessions, they led 5-3 and confidence was high. But Gaffers B are a decent team on their home table and they won the early frames to get back to 5-5. Bluebell A just needed a frame for a point, but the balls would not roll for them, Gaffers B adding another to lead for the first time. The visitors now needed the last frame to stop the rot, but it wasn’t to be as Gaffers B completed a final session whitewash and took the victory. In Division Two, it is now a four-way race for the title after The Crown lost again, ef-

James Hammers C to a draw. The away side started better by going 3-1 ahead, only for Hoppy’s A to match them in session two, levelling the score at 4-4. What followed was a real tussle as both sides won frames, and it eventually came down to Jason versus Ken The Glove. Could the home side secure a shock win? Jason looked nervy as Ken used his years of experience to take control, eventually rolling in the black to rescue a point for his team. Bluebell B pulled off a fine win against title rivals Yates Bar, and, with their games in hand, they really are in this title race. It was a cagey game, and, over the first eight frames, there was nothing to choose between the teams. It all came down to the final session, and who would hold their nerve. Bluebell B took the first and second frames, which put real pressure on Yates Bar because they needed the final two frames. Unfortunately the occasion got to them as Craig and Grant put in great performances to complete Bluebell B’s excellent win.

Golden Mile set to keep running By Colin Kirby
IT’S great to be a runner in Tenerife because there are events for all ages, and those taking part get looked after like royalty.
The San Silvestre Golden Mile, in Las Americas, was a new addition to the calendar on New Year’s Eve. Bananas, ice-cream, sweets and cold water were in plentiful supply to top up and treat the finishers. And every entrant received a commemorative runningshirt, and a medal. San Silvestre race events, a popular New Year’s Eve tradition in Tenerife, were also held in La Laguna, El Medano, Los Realejos, and Garachico this year. The new Arona event had its start and finish point near Compostela Beach, with the longest of the age-related routes, 5km, running through the upmarket shopping and dining area known as the Golden mile. It started at 3pm with the shortest 250m dash and worked its way upward through 500m, 800m, 1,200m, 1,600m - and then the big race, with over 300 runners. The event, competitive but extremely friendly, attracted serious club runners as well as fitness enthusiasts, and some just glad to run off some of the festive over-indulgences. Several runners donned fancy-dress, and Santa hats were a popular accessory.
And there was at least one, fully-kitted-out Papa Noel, as he is known in these parts. The big 5km winners were in the men’s category, Castellon’s Thierry Maikliminemayo coming home in a lightning 14mins 34secs, followed by Miquel Angel Vazquez (15.22). In third place was Erwin Vanderplancke (15.22). Kayla Saavedra led the way for the ladies in 19mins 29secs. Second was Veronica Reveron Mendez (19.41), and third went to Pili Ramos (20.15). Top marks to Arona Council for its organisation, and it was nice to see children’s charity Miel de Mariposa involved on the day. It helps children with a rare condition called Butterfly Skin, and you can find out more in English or Spanish at www.pieldemariposa.es And don´t think you’ve missed the starting gun because there are plenty more chances to run during
the year. How about a nice night run? Friendly goals galore
By Colin Kirby
AFTER the festive break, Tenerife were looking for mid-season encouragement and fringe-player inspiration ahead of the January transfer window activity.
This friendly win at San Isidro gave a few pointers to coach Pep Marti for his wheeling and dealing. And striker Jouini must have edged nearer the exit with a poor first-half display. Even against a side three divisions below Tenerife, he looked slow, clumsy, and his first touch was terrible. Star of the night was Alex Garcia, one of many changes for the second half. He was outstanding on the left, capping his display with a lovely strike for the second goal and a neat

header for the third. Omar was his usual, busy self up front, but Cristo looked out of
sorts and didn’t shine. It was one-way traffic in the first half, backup keeper Falcon was
called into action late on, while his opposite number, Alberto, made some great stops to keep Tenerife at bay. The solitary goal of the first half came from a powerful Jorge strike after the keeper beat
the ball away from a corner. A wave of changes at half-time saw Dani Hernandez take over in goal, and welcome run-outs for recovering injured players Edu Oriol and Choco Lozano.
And Garcia added pace and class as the goals started to flow. After his pair, German found the target and Choco also scored a couple. It was a good exercise before the league action resumes. at Nastic Tarragona on Sunday.
Basketball
Kings of the court ANOTHER milestone was added to Iberostar Tenerife´s record-breaking season when they confirmed their qualification for the sport’s Copa del Rey (King’s Cup) with an 8972 home win over Andorra on the final Friday of 2016.
It was another fine, all-round display, and, even with the team still missing injured Nico Richotti and Javi Beiran, they responded to the 4,647 La Laguna crowd by crushing their visitors. Tenerife dominated, the main damage happening in the first quarter (28-19) and the third (25-16). Davin White topscored with 20 points, but this week’s surprise package was Will Hanley (10). The win confirmed Tenerife’s fourth place
in the Liga Endesa, ensuring their entry into the Cup, along with the other three top sides. Things are brewing up very nicely in the European Champions League, a last-gasp 7275 win at Strasbourg on Tuesday night avenging a 66-70 home loss in November against the French team. That home tie was a
thriller, which went to overtime play before the sides could be separated. And the latest game was another cracker between the two best teams in the qualifying Group D. It was neck-andneck all the way, but Davin White proved to be the difference with his long-range baskets. With a minute left, he
turned a one-point deficit into a two-point lead. Strasbourg levelled, only for Aaron Dornekamp (top-scorer with 21 points) to restore Tenerife’s lead. But the French side tied again with just 27 seconds left. It appeared to be heading for more extratime, but American
White launched a superb shot with just two seconds to spare. There are three group games left for all teams, whatever happens in the next round, and supporters would love
to see Tenerife and Strasbourg meet again. On Wednesday (11th Jan), Iberostar Tenerife host Ostend, of Belgium, in their penultimate home qualifying game at 7.30pm in La Laguna.
Tenerife Ladies back in action
YOU can’t beat live football, and, after the festive break, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife will be eager to continue their winning season in Spain´s Ladies Primera. On Sunday (8th Jan), there’s a noon kick-off at El Medano against Santa Teresa. Playing at the top level has brought out the best in the girls. Their creative, attacking style has helped them build crowds to just under the 1,000 mark, and they sit in seventh spot in the league. Santa Teresa are tucked just below them, so a keen contest should be on the cards. Entry is just seven euros.
