Even more good news Continued from Front To get the full story about the new ruling on the abusive charges that must be returned by the banks to mortgage holders, Canarian Weekly asked our resident lawyer, Mariano Zunino Siri, for a full explanation.

“We have started 2017 with more judgments condemning the banks to refund the overcharged interests and other costs due to the abusive clauses included in the Mortgage Deed.

We have reported before that the so called “clausula suelo”, floor clause, has been declared abusive by the Supreme Court, and more recently on 21st December 2016, the European Court ruled that the banks have to refund the extra monies charged from the very beginning of the mortgage, not only from 9 May 2013 as previously stated by the Supreme Court.

The Barcelona Court, nº1 Gronollers, recently ruled against BBVA nullifying the Floor Clause and condemning the bank to refund the client all mortgage costs including Notary fees, Land Registry fees, and the Stamp Duty

(1% in the Cab¡nary Islands) related to the constitution of the mortgage.

This is not the only new case as the High Court of Zaragoza also condemned a bank to refund the mortgage costs.

These resolutions shadow the judgement of the Supreme Court of December 2015 (judgment 705/2015), that declared those clauses null and void, that imposed the customer, the payment of all the costs of formalization of the Mortgage Deed, adding that the bank should be liable for the costs of registration as they are the lender and charging interest on the monies.

These judgements are not connected to the December judgement of the European Court regarding the Floor Clause.

The Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU), stated that when the ruling was first made in 2015, there were more than 6 million “alive” mortgages that this criteria could be applied to.

On the other hand, the Spanish Bank Association (AEB), consider that these judgements are isolated resolutions and should be studied “case by case”. In

other words, this means that it must be determined in each individual case whether the clause that charges the customer with the payment of all the loan costs, has been imposed by the bank.”

Even the Tenerife Cabildo in collaboration with consumer protection organisation (ADICAE) had an “enlightening” meeting

in La Laguna this week, to offer free advice to mortgage holders as to the best route to make a claim against their bank.

At this stage, the speaker emphasised that a formula for obtaining refunds had not been worked out. But whatever procedure is put into practice, it will be, free, to all affected home-owners.

The current advice from ADICAE is to sit tight, do nothing and wait for its officials to make a public announcement about the necessary information. But, that does not mean you can’t go now directly to your bank manager or contact them via a lawyer, if you so prefer, to find out what refunds you are due.

Shop keepers nabbed for credit-card thefts

NATIONAL Police have arrested 31 people, believed to have swindled 1.5 million euros from thousands tourists in Las Americas and Costa Adeje.

The majority of those held were of Indian nationality, from 15 commercial premises, who attracted tourists with below-market

prices, then charged their bank cards several times on illegal credit-card machines.

Unfortunately, many tourists haven’t report the scam because they won’t have realized the money missing from their account until they return home.

This criminal gang were active in Gran Canaria and the South of Tenerife. A number of those involved were paying friends, acquaintances and even

known villains to purchase credit-card machines from banks.

Such devices have been used in bazaars in Las Américas and Costa Adeje, along with the shops’ legal credit-card machines. And, when the victims paid, their cards were charged several times through the illegal machines.

The excuse used by the scammers was that the charge had not been accepted the first time.

Bailout disgrace of the public’s billions THE full cost to the taxpayer of the banking bailout remains a complete mystery, according to Spain’s Audit Court, the public oversight body.

Restructuring Spain’s bankrupt savings banks, up to December 2015, totalled 60.7bn euros, of which nearly 41.8bn was put up by the state through the Orderly Bank Restructuring Fund (FROB) and the rest by the banking sector, says the Audit Court.

But in a new report, it finds that the real cost of bailing out the sector in the wake of the Spanish property crash, and the global economic crisis, will not be fully understood until all the lenders are newlyprivatised.

The Audit Court’s report criticises the FROB’s unclear accounting methods, and estimates that a total of 58m euros was spent on

professional fees paid to third parties for services such as consulting work and recordkeeping.

Shockingly, what emerges from these findings is that the financial crisis, though bad for the taxpayer, was highly-profitable for advisors, consultants and notaries, among others.

The state actually paid 3.8m euros for “other notary expenses, other advisory work and reports”.

Thus, the puzzle about the full cost to the taxpayer of the banking bailout. The Spanish

state still controls 65% of Bankia and BMN (headed by former savings bank Caja Murcia).

And until these lenders are privatised, either together or separately, and the “bad bank” (known as Sareb) is liquidated, the state’s losses will not be clear. And Sareb still has 12 years ahead of it!

The one thing to emerge is that the state will not be recovering all the money it invested in the bailout.

Government officials are resigned to the fact that 26.3bn euros of public funds

have been lost forever, even though Spain’s Popular Party (PP) Government pledged in 2012 that citizens would not foot the bill for the banking crisis.

On the private side, banks put up a little over 8bn euros for the Deposit Guarantee Fund (FGDEC), but had additional expenses, including guarantees for questionable credit lines, that bring the total bailout cost to the private sector to slightly over 18.9bn euros.

In June 2012, when the Spanish Government announced its rescue plan for the country’s crippled banking system, in part funded by the European Central Bank, Economy Minister Luis de Guindos told Congress: “Have no doubt that most of the money going to the nationalisation of these banks will be recovered. The loan will not be paid for by society … on the contrary.”

The same day, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy

insisted: “This is a loan to the banks, and the banks will pay it back.”

Besides offering these socalled facts, the report also chides the FROB for failing to have applied “a document with analytical accounting to each sale procedure”.

It was an oversight that led to “notable deficiencies” at the time of assigning resources to each lender. The report mentions the bailout and sale of Catalunya Banc specifically.

The Audit Court also finds outlays of 10.8m in “fees charged by representatives and expenses to select” FROB representatives.

In addition, the state paid 5.8m euros to consultants who helped with the sale of regional lenders CAM, Banco de Valencia, Catalunya Banc, Novagalicia Banco, Unnim Banc and Cajasur.

A further 3.8m euros are tacked on to the bill for “other notary expenses, other advisory work and reports”.

Give us peace, pleads Yeremi’s poor mother THE parents of Yeremi Vargas, the boy who disappeared nearly 10 years ago in Vecindario, Gran Canaria, hope the ongoing court case against Antonio Ojed (“El Rubio”) can clarify what happened to their child.

Ithaisa Suárez and Juan Francisco Vargas have been back at the San Bartolome de Tirajana court to hear the next round of testimonies.

Upon leaving the court house, the boy’s mother made a plea to Ojeda, who has so far has refused to testify, saying: “Show us where Yeremi is.”

Ithaisa added: “Our hope is that he tells us where Yéremi is, so we can have some peace of mind. Knowing where Yéremi is all we want.”

Her former partner,

Juan Francisco Vargas, father of the child, uttered similar words: “Let’s see if this gets resolved once and for all. All our family really want is to know what happened.

I’ll be at peace when everything is resolved

and the truth is known.”

The Tenerife Cabildo wants to revive a strategy it attempted to establish in 2009 concerning the setting up of bus services by large, public companies for their staff.

The project, called Integral Mobility Tenerife (Moviten), was, subsequently shelved because of the recession, said Mobility Minister Sr. Manolo Ortega.

Now, more than seven years later, the wants to launch the first plans for collective transport in companies and public

administrations.

The Cabildo sees it as one way to help alleviate the traffic swamping the motorways every morning.

“The aim is that public transport is used because it is an asset to the community,” added Orgega. “And, in many cases, the user will not have to pay for it. And those who benefit as much from it will be the companies and administrations.”

The first step to launch collective transport has been to address one of the great employers, Ashotel, the Canaries hotel association.

Cabildo sources says the proposal has already been sent to Ashotel

officials and a meeting is imminent.

But how will the project be funded?

Rajoy applauds huge unemployment drop S PA I N ’ S official total of unemployed last month was 3,702,974 people, a drop of 390,534 against the same period last year and the largest decline ever in a calendar year.

It continued the lowest-level trend over the past seven years.

And no one is more delighted than Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy.

“The main target at this time is to see this repeated in 2017, 2018 and 2019, in order to reach the figure of 20 million people in work in our country,” said Rajoy.

He underlined that the current in-work figures “are positive for pensioners, for companies, for those who have found a job and, above all, they are good for ensuring that people do not lose hope”.

The year-on-year jobless decline stands at 9.54%, the fastest

rate since 1999. And over the last four years, unemployment has fallen by more than a million people (1,145,749).

The number of contracts registered last month totalled 1,699,018, the highest figure on record for a December month, representing a 6.5% increase over 2015.

The number of permanent employment contracts in that 2015 period was 122,294 – so it’s a 13.38% increase.

And a whopping 1,713,262 permanent employments contracts were registered in 2016, a 13.52% increase of 204,097 on the previous year.

Rajoy added: “There are still a great many people looking for a job. There are too many of them, but we are working to ensure they can find one.”

Sex-abuse victim reveals: ‘He made me feel special’ EDUARDO, one of the Tenerife victims to denounce athletics coach Miguel Angel Millán for sexual abuse, opened his heart for the first time about their relationship.

Millán was sent to prison on Monday and Eduardo, now 20, recalled with a shaky voice, though confident: “He sexually abused me four times, always on sports trips and in private hotel rooms.”

It started when he was just 12. “My brother and I trained with him,” said Eduardo. “He lived very close to us and we used to go to his house as he would give us a lift to the track.”

Millán spun his dangerous web around the youngster by lending him albums, films, and books. He left him enthusiastic with stories of his travels; led him to believe they shared the same hobbies and assured him they understood each other better than anyone else did.

“Being with him, seeing that he cared about you and shared his things, made you feel important,” said Eduardo, who began to look up to Millán, placing him on the highest of pedestals.

“In the world of athletics, he was a well-known person and they treated him like a god,” he added. “So if he noticed you, it had to be because you were special.”

And Eduardo believed a good friendship was springing up between them, despite his youth. “Until then, I didn’t notice anything strange,”, he said. But their relationship grew and they became closer.

THE Millán case covers nearly 30 years of alleged sexual abuse to minors, manipulating promising athletes, testimonies and police reports, which have broken the silence. *1970-1980, the start: The first testimonies related to possible sexual abuse by the coach emerge during these years. It happened on three more occasions, all on sports trips, in Gran Canaria capital Las Palmas and Castellón. “It always happened in private, in hotel rooms,” he said. “In other places, he would give me massages, but nothing that would imply me being naked.”

Eduardo confessed that he was “consumed” by the situation. “I thought I was the only it was happening to,” he said. “He made me think we were best friends and that there was nobody else”.

But he claimed that Millán could be authoritative. “He wasn’t physically violent, but he was emotionally violent,”

Kids’ sexual assaults still a society ‘taboo’ THE number of sexual assaults on minors in Spain increased by 5% to around 3,930 in 2015, which means an average of more than 10 were reported daily.

The previous year’s figure amounted to 3,732, according to the Interior Ministry. And, in total, 35,913 violent acts against children were reported.

Andrés Conde, Director of Save the Children in Spain,

said: “More and more cases of sexual abuse to children are coming to light, but this crime is still a taboo in our society.

“Violence against children is a hidden problem and figures reported are just the tip of the iceberg.”

He stressed: “We lack a system which allows children to report these crimes, and this mean many cases are unknown and remain unpunished.”

At the time, Eduardo “had no idea how to get out of the situation”.

He moved to a different high school to get away from the situation and realised “there was another life, and other alternatives”.

The perfect occasion then presented itself when Millán became angry with Eduardo.

“I seized the opportunity and wrote to him, saying I needed time to study,” he said.

That was in March 2013 and it was the young man’s final farewell to the person who had destroyed part of his childhood.

At that time, Eduardo was extremely confused, so his decision to denounce Millán didn’t happened until later.

Yet despite the youngster’s courage, it did not have great consequences because the judge dismissed the case on the grounds that the crime had not been duly justified.

Then a friend in common told the young man that what had happened to him could be happening to more people. That’s when another key person in this process emerged: Eduardo’s mother!

“She was the one who found other testimonies,” said her proud son, who believes there are more than 10 athletes and former athletes who have already told their story.

“There must be about 30 cases in Murcia and as many in Tenerife.”

Knowing that his antagoniser is now locked up, said Eduardo, “makes me feel released. Walking down the street, thinking you could bump into him, was not very nice.”

The young man concluded, finally, that

The judge sent Millán to prison on Monday after receiving a new denuncia, from another Tenerife youngster, who is just 16. He testifies that he suffered the worst of serious offences.

Like Eduardo, Millán was also the first person to whom the teenager confessed his homosexuality, as stated in the judge’s report.

It is evident that the coach’s modus operandi was always the same: after creating a special relationship with his victim, he then manipulates and isolates them from the world - also stated in the judge’s report.

That also revealed another the possible crime involving pornographic material.

Apparently, it happened in an El Poris property, where, allegedly, several criminal acts were carried out against this child.

And where “it’s likely to find incriminating material”, because, the teenager reported that this was where Millán “would put on pornographic movies”.

With all these facts, the judge was assured that the decision to imprison Millán was motivated by “flight risk and possible influence on other witnesses or victims”.

Héctor González, President of the Tenerife School of Athletics & Sports Club, where the majority of Millán’s alleged victims come from, said the organisation had collaborated and given its support to all the boys.

“If it is true that there are more cases, and that they want to come forward, we will be here to help them,” he said.

González said the Club, which will collaborate with legal proceedings, wants to create a calm environment. “I know Eduardo and the other minors’ cases,” he added.

“And as for the rest, I have found out via the press.

They are minors and it’s a complicated subject.”

Defence lawyer José Manuel Nierderleytner, who plans to appeal the decision, argues that his client’s imprisonment is “disproportionate and unnecessary”.

Private-school pupils hit booze and drugs STUDENTS at a £25,000-a-year private school sneaked out of their Tenerife hotel for a booze-and-drugs night while on a science trip from Cornwall.

Spain tops world for organ donors with 26-year run SPAIN, a world leader in organ donation and transplants for 25 consecutive years, beat its own record again in 2016 with an average 43.4 donors per million inhabitants.

That adds up to a total of 2,018 donors and 4,818 transplants, with waiting lists in just about every organ category falling by 196, from 5,673 patients in 2015 to 5,477 last year.

Last year in total, 2,994 kidney transplants were carried out, 1,159 livers, 281 hearts and 307 lungs. There were also 73 pancreas and four intestinal transplants.

The figures were presented at a press conference by Health Minister Dolors Montserrat during a visit to the National Transplant Organisation (ONT) headquarters on Wednesday.

The ONT has been led for the last 28 years by Rafael Matesanz, who is standing down in the coming months.

TheOrganistion says the improved results come from the increased use of non-heart-beating donors, who make up one in four of people who donate an organ, along with better coordination with medics working in accident and emergency to identify possible donors.

At the same time, there was a fall in the number of kidney transplants from living donors: 341 compared with last year’s 388, probably as a result of more organs being available from deceased donors.

The ONT says that donors are becoming progressively older: 54.6% are now aged over 60, close to onethird are 70 or older and almost 10% are in their eighties; the oldest donor in Spain last year, aged 94, provided a liver.

For the first time, every region in Spain has provided more than 35 donors per million inhabitants, with more than 60 per million in Cantabria, the Basque Country and Navarre, and more than 50 per million in Murcia and La Rioja.

A dozen sixth-form students from Truro School are said to have visited a local bar in Puerto de Santiago, after breaking a curfew.

One pupil bought cocaine and another, believed to have smoked cannabis, was taken to hospital by paramedics after concerned teachers noticed he was feeling unwell.

The school has punished those responsible, and one pupil might even have been excluded. Another was suspended, while others were given “isolation”.

JOSE and Maria, parents of the three girls they hid at their Telde home in Gran Canaria for years, told the authorities that the entire, baffling episode was down to “the fear of being separated from them”.

That fear, they said, was instilled when they registered their first child late, eight years ago, because the father could not take time off work until he had holidays.

Then, when he went to register her, he says he was informed by the civil courts that, should it happen again, they risked losing the child’s custody. So when their second child was born and a similar situation

worse when a small amount of drugs were bought from a local dealer.

“The teachers who oversaw the trip are to be commended for the excellent care they provided the students, and for investigating the misdemeanours quickly and thoroughly.”

Mr Gordon-Brown added that the school had dealt with those responsible in a firm manner.

“I fear that you may well read about this sorry tale in the media, and wanted to be the first to tell you that, having now concluded the investigation, I have taken firm, fair and proportionate action to punish the offending students.

“Please be assured that I will continue to take a very hard line when it comes to drugs and their impact on our school community.”

Parents hid kids through concern

But the Children’s Prosecutor’s Office has since taken custody of the children and placed them in the island’s Santa Rosalia Children’s home.

The mother gave birth recently to a fourth child, who is still in hospital and under the Canarian Government’s custody until the case ruling.

A Med diet could ease brain drain THE shrinking of brains in old age could be solved by the Mediterranean Diet, which could also and keep cognitive decline at bay.

That’s the results of a new study by scientists, who knew that the diet, popular in Spain, could help prevent dementia. But they did not know how it protected the brain.

However, this study has shown how it keeps brain cells active for longer, helping to slow down the inevitable shrinkage.

Study author Dr Michelle Luciano, from the University of Edinburgh, said: “As we age, the brain shrinks and we lose brain cells which can affect learning and memory.

“This study adds to the body of evidence that suggests the Mediterranean diet has a positive impact on brain health… and may be able to provide long-term protection to the brain.”

Scientists gathered dietary information for 401 people

aged 70, then scanned their brains at the age of 73 and 76, measuring brain volume and the thickness of the cerebral cortex.

They found that those who closely followed a Mediterranean diet rich in oily fish, vegetables, nuts and

fruit, retained more volume over the period.

Dr Clare Walton, Research Manager at Alzheimer’s Society, said: “There is an increasing amount of evidence to indicate that eating such a healthy diet is good for your brain and

can help to maintain your memory as you get older.

“Our brains shrink by 1-2%-per-year in old age, and this study suggests that a Mediterranean-style diet could, potentially, also help slow down this shrinking process.”

English not that popular to learn NEARLY 60% of Spaniards admit they can’t speak, read or write in English, according to the latest poll from Spain’s CIS state research institute.

Yet English is the mostspoken second language in Spain, says the poll, with 27.7% of respondents saying they speak it, followed by French (9%) German (1.7%) and Portuguese (1.2%).

According to the poll, 66.9% of Spaniards do not feel they have been affected negatively, or have missed opportunities because of their inability to speak a second language.

Meanwhile, 94.8% of respondents believe it is important to speak at least one foreign language. In fact, those surveyed say that after maths, it is the most important subject.

Yet many of those surveyed are dissatisfied with Spain’s attitude toward languagelearning. Nearly 36% say that Spain gives little importance to second languages, compared with 16.1%, who say Spain is excellent at languages.

The majority of those surveyed learned languages in elementary or high school.

For English speakers, 47.4% learned the language in school, and, for French speakers, 33.5% said the same.

But the majority of Portuguese, German and Italian speakers learned these languages while abroad.

The survey suggests that the vast majority of older people speak Spanish only, and 90% of respondents say their parents do not speak a second language. For those who do, however, 39.7% speak English and 48.1% French.

As for families with children, 89.2% of parents say their kids are studying English.

But of those surveyed, 87.4% say they are not studying another language.

Of the 11.4% still in the learning process, most say they are doing it for work, or for their studies. Of them, 11% are studying French and 77.9% English.

And though 45% of parents say they have a favourable opinion of language studies at school, 38.3% say they also take their children to private language classes.

The fraudsters now face porn charges as well Spanish couple Fernando Blanco and Marga Garau, accused of defrauding generous folk of nearly 1m euros, after claiming their daughter suffered from a rare genetic condition, are now being investigated for suspected child-pornography offences.

Images of a sexuallyexplicit nature were found on a computer, allegedly belonging to the father of 11-year-old Nadia, who lives in Mallorca.

The presiding judge said: “New evidence “clearly shows that the accused (the father) sexually-exploited their child.”

Following its discovery, the judge summoned both parents to appear in court today (Friday) to face charges of child pornography and sexual exploitation.

Authorities have been sifting through 13 pen drives, seven memory cards and three hard drives for more evidence before the hearing.

The mother is currently on bail, but the father has been remanded in custody.

As previously reported, the couple are suspected of scamming donations estimated at 918,000 euros to help ‘treat’ a rare condition from which, they claimed, their daughter was suffering.

In fact, they lived a life of luxury on the donated money, police finding a collection of luxury watches worth 50,000 euros.

ANIMALS will get a day off from their rural routine as the Romeria of San Antonio Abad welcomes these unsung heroes to Arona town.

Highlight of the Fiesta takes place on Sunday in the Church Square, Plaza del Santisimo Cristo del Salud, and Arona Council has laid on free transport from Las Americas and Los Cristianos.

The cultural life of Tenerife owes a lot to hard-working farm beasts, and San Antonio, patron saint of animals, is the

focal point of this celebration.

Animals will be paraded around the central streets of Arona from 12.30pm and a grand dance will begin at 4pm with live groups, Pasion Gomera, and Deliciosa.

There will also be plenty of stalls featuring local produce, food and drink, and outbreaks of music and dance in the streets from local folklore artists.

Free buses will run from outside the Hotel Zentral Centre in Las Americas and the Auditorio Infanta Leonor in Los Cristianos at 10am, 11am and noon, returning from Arona at 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm to drop off at both collection points.

Adeje’s off to a bright start ADEJE’S calendar for first month of 2017 is already full with sporting, traditional and cultural events.

They come, via the Council and the celebration of one of the borough’s patron saints, San Sebastián, on Thursday and Friday (19-20th Jan).

Events kick off this evening (Friday), at 6pm in Adeje Cultural Centre (room 9), with the presentation of a book “Fantasías de la abuela Copito”, by Adeje’s Juana Rita González Acosta.

It is based on questions from her grandchildren, full of adventure, love and learning.

Then, at 8pm, a new art

display will be opened in the exhibition hall by Italian-born artist Stefania Fratti She has hosted shows in Milan, Magenta and Brianza, won first place in “Mi Ciudad/ My Town” competition, and has been based in Tenerife for a number of years.

On Sunday, a delegation from the local basketball school will be in attendance at the big league game between Iberostar Tenerife and FC Barcelona in La Laguna, at the Pabellón Santiago Martín.

Horse-killer jailed on cruelty charges after change of law

THE owner of a racehorse, convicted of beating it to death, has become the first person in Spain to be sent to jail on animal cruelty charges.

In a country with a long history of animal abuse, rights groups in Spain have applauded the sentence Eugenio Sánchez María, who co-owned the racehorse Sorky das Pont, was given an eight-month jail sentence by a Mallorca judge after being found guilty of beating the animal with a piece of wood and breaking his neck after it was disqualified from a trotting race in Manacor four years ago.

In his ruling, Judge Eduardo Calderón said that Sánchez struck various blows to the horse’s head that resulted in its death. The defendant had initially said his horse broke his neck when it hit its head on the ceiling of its stall after trying to get up.

During the trial last April, the defendant appeared aloof and hardly spoke, accepting the facts of the case and the subsequent sentence.

Sorky das Pont, born in Menorca, was a cross between a US sire and a dam from Sweden, winning about 20% of its 100 races.

On the night of his death, Sorky was disqualified from the race, total prize-money 500 euros, after he lost his pace and broke into a gallop, which angered Sánchez.

In the Balearic Islands, where trotting is a traditional sport, there are an estimated 500 trotting horse-owners and riders. Of the 7,000 registered horses, which are trained to trot instead of gallop, about 1,000 compete in races. Sorky’s co-owner, Pedro José Tous, has renounced all claims to possible compensation for

the dead horse. But neither he nor his lawyers thought his partner would end up serving prison time.

“He is a good man, and he’s devastated, said one owner at the Manacor racetrack. “We are concerned about him.”

The Sánchez legal team appealed the sentence for the horse’s death and asked for it to be substituted with by community, but a judge reaffirmed the lower court’s order.

“This is an extraordinary measure,” said a person close to Sánchez’s defence team.

“If a motorist hits a cyclist and causes his death, he can be sentenced to one year and won’t have to serve any jail time.”

Palma High Court Judge María Jesús Campos Barciela, who ordered Sánchez to report to prison two weeks ago, is known for her expressive and almost philosophical written rulings.

She takes the rights of victims and mistreatment of animals very seriously. She does not seek publicity, and, until now, has not been a high-profile judge.

Several weeks earlier, she sentenced another man to one year in prison after he was convicted of letting his dog starve to death.

“Leaving a person or an animal to die from hunger is one of the cruellest things,” she wrote in her ruling. “He induced a slow and atrocious agony on the dog that lasted months.”

Manuel José Molina, a lawyer who brought the charge against Sánchez on behalf of the Balearic Lawyers’ Association for Animal Defence, said they had asked that he be remanded.

“This crime carries a oneyear sentence, so this is no surprise to us,” he said.

Advocacy lawyers say there is now much more public awareness about mistreating

animals, and there has also been a rise in the number of convictions since 2008 for these crimes.

As part of the penal code reforms, the Popular Party (PP) Government last July approved stronger penalties for those violating animal protection laws, said Sabina Sánchez, a lawyer for proanimal rights party PACMA. Under Spanish law, a judge at his discretion can suspend jail time if a person is sentenced to two years or less and does not have a prior criminal record. In most cases, those found guilty are ordered to perform community service.

Antonio Vercher, coordinating prosecutor for environment and urban affairs, has welcomed the legal changes because most of these crimes, as he puts it, are “atrocities”.

On top of his sentence, Sánchez will be banned from performing any type of job or activity related to animals for three years.

He has also been suspended from the Balearic Trotting Federation as a preventive measure.

Fill it up - with lottery winners THE petrol station at Granadilla continued its lucky Christmas ways by selling six El Niño winning tickets, corresponding to the second prize.

Between the six lottery tickets sold, the station paid out 450,000 euros for winning number 95,379.

Owner Jose Miguel Gonzalez said: “Whenever there is an important draw, I have a hunch we will be lucky.

“People come from all over the island to buy lottery tickets here, calling us the lucky gas station. And I couldn’t be happier.”

Carnival kiosks for sale

BELIEVE it or not, 85 Santa Cruz Carnival on-site kiosks will be auctioned on Tuesday for between 620 and 17,500 euros, reports the local Council.

The auction will be carried out according to the call-out system “puja a la llana”, which entails shouting as loud as possible, and no bids lower than the price

fixed for each position will be admitted.

The 85 kiosks will specialise in selling food such as churrerías, bars, pastries, coffeestalls, hot-dogs and hamburgers,and other items.

The Carnival kiosks and stalls will remain installed in Santa Cruz from 24th February to 5th March.

Brakes go on drug-dealers

NATIONAL Police, who have monitored two men since last November last year, arrested them for selling cocaine.

After an extensive investigation, the cops set up an operation to catch the drug-dealers

during a transaction conducted between two car-drivers.

They seized 505gm of cocaine, a further 188gm grams after raiding their house in Los Realejos, together with four mobile phones and 4,800 euros in cash.

Arona Council looks at squatters’ options

ONE in five youngsters in Spain leaves school early without completing compulsory exams, or gaining an alternative high-school qualification.

The Ministry of Education says 19.7% of those aged 1824 left school in the second trimester (three months) last year.

The figure far exceeds the EU’s overall 11% rate during the same 2015 period.

Last year, almost 25% of youngsters in Andalucia dropped out of school, which was the second-highest rate in Spain

Xmas fatalities

Thirty-four people died in 32 fatal traffic accidents on Spanish roads during the Christmas period, according to the Dirección General de Tráfico.

The death toll is the same as registered during the 2015 Christmas, but that festive period was over 15 days, which was two days fewer than this year.

Around 10,000 Guardia Civil Traffic agents ensured the safety of 16.7 million travellers during the holiday, compared with 13.6m the previous year.

Tragically, 2016 ended with a total of 1,159 fatalities in road accidents, which exceeded the previous year’s total by 28.

Brits’ pool victory

MORE towels please! Brits have finally toppled the Germans as top sunbathers in Europe. Some 62% of British holiday-makers, against 53% of Germans, say their favourite holiday pastime is lying in the sun by the beach or the pool.

The findings, from a poll of 16,000 British, German and French tourists, puts paid to the long-lasting German sunbed warfare around pools.

Sabadell closures

SABADELL bank is to close around 250 branches across Spain this year, shedding at least 800 jobs.

The closure, which accounts for 12% of the bank’s network, is part of a wider process of closures being carried out by the financial sector as a whole.

It says the scheme is necessary to adapt “to the unstoppable digital transformation that affects all fields of activity, including the banking sector”.

A spokesman for the bank, which also owns Solbank, cited consumer habits which, increasingly, include the use of mobile devices.

Machete man

GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a 29-year-old man for breaking into his partner’s Granadilla apartment on Three Kings Day with a machete in his hands - and a threatening attitude.

Fortunately, his partner and her father were not there.

But the intruder was arrested shortly after leaving the property, and will appear in court.

Canarian firms are suspected of fraud THE National Police have arrested 27 people in the Canary Islands, said to be involved in a mammoth Social Security fraud, amounting to more than 6.5m euros.

The investigations into began months ago, when 33 suspected fraudulent companies were detected by competent agencies in Tenerife and Las Palmas.

And detectives have so far resolved eight crimes against Social Security, including insolvency, concealment of assets, Benefit fraud, and falsifying documents.

Following on from last week’s story, there will not be a quick fix for the problem of squatters, living in abandoned buildings at Las Tarajales beach, Los Cristianos.

But Arona Council is looking at ways to restore the promenade and offer help, if needed, to the 40-orso squatters who have made their home there.

Luis Garcia, Councillor for

Urban Matters, spoke this week about the problem, confirming that the buildings were fully legal, and, once restored, would be usable.

The Council has a plan in place which can include help with rent elsewhere for the occupants. Should a judge order them to leave.

A current estimate is that 40-50 people live in the units, which have remained unused since they were built 10 years ago.

The Council have kept in contact with the family who own the land, and are trying to find ways

to improve the situation.

Legal action can be taken through the Supreme Tribunal, but it’s a long, complicated process.

On the wider issue of the promenade and the abandoned beach buildings, there are further complications because coastal authority the Costas set the guidelines for areas close to the shoreline.

Meanwhile, Luis Garcia has said the Council is looking at other ways to clean up the promenade, to transform it into an attractive place for tourism.

Down-to-earth drug-smugglers THREE men, who transported drugs from Morocco to Spain by gyrocopter, have been jailed for a total of nearly 14 years.

They were found guilty of crimes against public health by a Malaga Provincial court, which heard that they used the aircraft to carry 115kg of hashish resin, worth around 169,500 euros on the black market.

Police discovered that two men, who had tested the gyrocopter in November 2012, planned a drugs’ operation on 31st December that year.

The aircraft, spotted on the arranged day, was intercepted by the Guardia Civil when it landed in the region of Ronda, a mountain town in Andalucia.

Officers, who found the drugs on board, also arrested the pilot, who admitted being employed to transport them.

Further searches of properties linked to the three

men led to confiscation of money, mobile phones, a vehicle and two trailers.

The leader, jailed five years and eight months, was also

fined 200,000 euros. His colleagues were sentenced, respectively, to 53 months and 170,000 euros, and 41 months and 130,000 euros euros.

‘Illegal’ monkeys lead to HIV-positive fears

Cocaine - hidden between tampons SANTA Cruz Local Police detained a 38-yearold woman on Three Kings Day, carrying 13 plastic wrappers containing a substance that turned out to be cocaine.

A L I C AN T E ’ S Guardia Civil announced a health alert last weekend after discovering that a marmoset monkey, seized in an anti-animal trafficking probe by its nature-protection arm Seprona, tested positive for HIV.

Investigators are now searching for 42 other marmosets that came into contact with the infected animal, which is also carrying the cancer-inducing human T-lymphotropic virus.

The potentially-infectious primates could be anywhere in the country, which means their owners are, potentially, putting the lives of themselves and others at risk, according to Seprona.

The marmoset was one of 25 confiscated by the protection group during an operation

several months ago, which led to the arrest of suspected animal traffickers - four from Alicante, two in Murcia and another in Sevilla.

The gang offered the illegally traded monkeys to pet stores, which sold them on secretly to private individuals for up to 2,000 euros each.

Documents recovered during raids on the suspects’ homes revealed that 67 individuals of four marmoset species had been sold.

Just 25 have been accounted for by Seprona, and the owners are likely to be unaware of the infection risk.

Five of the seized monkeys were already dead, and the Guardia Civil has issued an urgent appeal for owners to hand their pets over to the authorities.

Possession and breeding of primates and other exotic animals without a licence is illegal in Spain, yet hundreds were seized over the last year.

They were camouflaged in two tampons, concealed in a hidden compartment in her bag.

The arrest took place in a Candelaria street, in the Tenerife capital, when a pair of uniformed officers spotted a man known to have had previous drug offences.

When he saw them, the man tried to run away,

only to be arrested by a group of plain-clothed officers near Candelaria Square, along with the woman and another other couple.

The woman tried to pass a small black handbag to another person when the suspects were being searched. A quick search by police revealed the tampons, complete with hidden drugs.

Make sure vouchers are not gifted back to store

IT is so easy to buy a gift voucher for a birthday or Christmas present, but an estimated £6m is lost on them each week in the UK, according to the industry’s trade body.

The UK Gift Card & Voucher Association says that at least £5.40 from every £100 put on to gift cards is never spent.

Collectively, it totals around £300m because 10% of those in circulation get lost, or are simply forgotten about.

But, it is not just apathy that is to blame, with complex rules over the lifespan of gift cards causing confusion for consumers. That’s because some are valid for six months, while others are redeemable for as long as 10 years.

The lasting period can, typically, be found in the small print on the reverse of a card, “24 months”, for instance. Yet this won’t state the start or finish dates specific to your voucher.

It means that those without a receipt for the “gift” could be left no knowing when their card expires.

National Rail Travel

Vouchers, often given by rail companies as compensation for customers who have claimed for delays, or as a refund substitute, are valid for just 12 months. They are then rendered worthless.

Ticketmaster, which sells tickets for stand-up shows, festivals, concerts and theatre events across the UK, offers a gift-card alternative, but even this expires after one year.

The most common longevity for gift cards is 24 months.

And any purchases or balance checks made during this time will reset the clock to two years again.

Vouchers from H&M Gift Cards are also valid for two years from the date of the last activation or purchase. And shops offering this incentive include Marks & Spencer,

John Lewis, House of Fraser and Apple iTunes.

Amazon.co.uk gift cards have a validity of 10 years, which is the longest period of all, while National Book Tokens, bought at bookshops such as Waterstones, WH Smith and Foyles, should be spent within 24 months of purchase.

But NBT will replace expired gift cards with new ones if you return them in the post. One of the worst offenders is the “One 4 All card”. Although it can be spent at more than 100 high street retailers, including Debenhams and H&M, the company will charge shoppers 90p per month after 1½ years.

This means that any gifts cards to the value of £5 or £10 would, effectively, become void shortly after this period.

Gail Cohen, director of UK Gift Card & Voucher Association, says: “If you receive a gift card, whether as an online voucher or as a plastic card, you should contact the shop if you are not sure of the expiry date to avoid disappointment.

“But it is a good idea to go out and enjoy the benefits of the card as soon as possible in the New Year.”

In 2016, the high-street closures of Austin Reed and BHS left thousands of gift cards redundant, just months after Christmas 2015 because both stores ceased trading.

At the time, BHS told customers looking to use up gift cards that they would have to spend double to redeem any vouchers.

Under the UK’s insolvency laws, when a retailer goes into administration, it doesn’t have to honour gift cards or vouchers. That’s why BHS was allowed to change its gift-card policies.

If you use a credit card to buy gift vouchers worth £100 or more, then it should at least give you protection under Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act if the shop from which you bought the vouchers folds before they are used.

Women wearing pyjamas in Tesco get really snappy THE two female travellers, shamed online for wearing their pyjamas while shopping in Tesco one evening, have hit out at the man who took a picture of them in the store.

Chris Cooke branded the shoppers “bloody disgusting” when he posted a Facebook picture of them, strolling along an aisle in the store’s Salford branch in pink nightwear and slippers. He demanded that people wearing pyjamas be banned from the shop after snapping the two women browsing groceries in their dressing gowns.

But the Nottingham women branded their critic “sexist” and “racist”, saying the entire incident was “an attack on our culture”.

One of them told The Sun: “I’m disgusted that a man

has taken our picture and put it online, asking for Tesco to ban people wearing their pyjamas.

“Me and my mum were chatting, and our language is different from other people.

He probably realised that and decided to target us because of it.

“It would be different if I had no clothes on and was walking around naked, but I had clothes on. I don’t feel the need to impress the man who is complaining about it.”

She added: “I don’t need to dress up, put on make-up

and do my hair for him. I only have my husband to impress, and not some stranger in the supermarket.”

When Mr Cooke posted the picture on Tesco’s Facebook page, he said he had seen people shopping in the Greater Manchester store in their pyjamas on a regular basis.

He added that the retail giant should bring in a policy not to serve people dressed inappropriately.

He wrote: “Dear Tesco, please can you put a rule in place that people like this

will not be served in your stores. It’s bloody disgusting.

“This was at 7pm last night at your Tesco Salford store, and I have seen other people dressed similar on a regular basis. I mean, who doesn’t have the time to get changed into clothes to go shopping?”

A Tesco spokeswoman replied quickly, saying: “Many of our customers have told us that they feel uncomfortable when they see other shoppers wearing unsuitable clothing in our stores, and we do try to find a balance that everyone is happy with.

“Although we don’t have a formal dress-code in our stores, we rely on our management team to use their discretion and common sense.”

PS: Tesco did ban pyjamas in a Cardiff superstore in 2010 after customers complained that people shopping in nightwear made them feel “uncomfortable”.

Say cheese… and get high as a kite SPAIN’S National Police have arrested a 35-yearold man who was carrying almost a kilo of cocaine… inside a cheese”.

He was seen behaving “suspiciously” after being spotted by a police patrol on a Cordoba street in Andalucia.

He was carrying several tablets of the different substances, all used to fabricate narcotics, plus a large cheese wrapped in cling-film.

The man became more and more nervous, which persuaded the police to open up the cheese.

To their surprise, they discovered 968 grams of cocaine inside, which, they later admitted, was the first time they had come across drugs stashed away in this manner.

One third of Tenerife families on bread-line

THE Kairós Association, dedicated to distributing food to people in need since 2009, says in their 2016 report that poverty in Tenerife “has normalised”.

It means that it is part of the “social normality”, and it affects 30% of the population, unable to afford basic living expenses.

“The fact that poverty is becoming a normality can be seen in every food distribution,” says the Association.

“They are, increasingly, received by people who find sporadic or unstable work.

“They are forced to work more hours than stated in their contract (if they have a contract), only to be paid between 500-600 euros monthly.”

Kairós adds: “Obviously, it is impossible to cover basic expenses: housing, food, clothing and transportation, with such a low income.

The Association assisted 1,010 families in 2016, a total of 2,981 people, of whom 876 were under the age of 15 (29.4 %), 141 were over 65 (4.7 %) and 176 were immigrants (5.9 %).

Despite the supposed economic recovery, the number of families helped

by Kairós in 2016 increased by 12.2%, compared with last year.

Police cop good few quid from criminals A POLICE force has made £1.5m by selling luxury goods like shoes, handbags, and even a plane, on eBay after seizing them from criminals.

Leicestershire Police was the first in the UK to use the auction website to sell assets paid for with cash generated from crime.

Bargain-hunters visiting its eBay store have bought a plethora of designer handbags, made

by Mulberry and Louis Vuitton.

Shoes by world-famous designers Christian Louboutin and Vivienne Westwood have also been snapped up.

A ladies’ Oyster Rolex watch, worth £3,500 new, was sold recently for £1,195, and the force even sold a plane, owned by a drug-trafficker, on its eBay account, which has a 100% satisfiedcustomer rating.

The only item on the force’s site currently is an Audi A3 for £3,895,

but there have been no bids yet.

A Vivienne Westwood black leather handbag sold for £41 after being seized, and a pair of men’s purple Vivienne Westwood shoes went for the same price. Christian Louboutin shoes were sold for £331.

The Zenair Zodiac aircraft, used to transport cocaine with a street value of £1.7m, sold for £17,200 in 2013.

Under the Proceeds of Crime Act, Leicestershire Force’s Economic Crime Unit seizes everything, from high-end jewellery and designer clothes, to luxury sports cars and houses. The cash raised is shared between the force, the Home Office and the Crown Prosecution Service. It is also used to compensate victims of crimes in the county.

Police opened its online store shop in September 2009 and has since sold 6,000 items for a total of £1.5m. Last year, seized

items worth £300,000 were auctioned off.

Paul Wenlock, who leads the Economic Crime Unit at Leicestershire Police, said: “The majority of the money is from drugdealing.

“They can’t help themselves - they go out and invest in bling items.

We took approximately 200 items from one, including top quality clothing and designer jewellery and watches.

“This year, we’ve sold a VW car for £18,000, while Prada and Mulberry handbags have been very popular.

“Law-abiding folk ask themselves why these people have a luxury car on the driveway and a new Rolex, yet don’t appear to have a legitimate income.

“If you know anyone who appears to be living a lifestyle beyond his visible means, we would like to know. We can take action to ensure they do not benefit from these activities.”

Shop-lift squirrels have taste for chocolate bars THE frantic owner of a corner shop has appealed for help because squirrels keep sneaking into his premises and making off with chocolate bars.

The fleet-footed animals, showing a clear preference for Crunchies, aim for bars on the lower shelves so they can make a speedy exit with their haul.

To date, they have struck more than 40 times at the Toronto shop, and Paul Kim, who owns Luke’s Grocery, has set up CCTV to gather evidence. “At least two squirrels are robbing us - a black one and a lightbrown one,” he said.

“We can’t actually see the moment when they commit the thefts, because the chocolate bars are displayed below the counter, but we can hear a distinct rustling.

“When we come around the counter to try to catch one of them at it, we can see the squirrel running off with the bar in its mouth.

“It’s slower than normal by that point, obviously, because it has a huge

and heavy chocolate bar in its mouth. But it’s still hard to catch.

“We tried running after it, but it’s still faster. Passer-bys and customers tried chasing after it with us a couple of times. But once it goes up a tree, it’s game over.”

Paul and daughter Cindy have been updating Facebook each time a bar disappears to log the incidents.

Uncertain of what to do, the bewildered shopowner posted on socialmedia’s Reddit to ask for advice about the “crimes”, which started last autumn.

“We could try closing

the door, but then the store would get stuffy, and it costs too much to cool down the place enough all day, every day,” he said.

“We also tried calling animal services, but they only seem to be concerned about lost or killed animals and pets.

Also, we can’t use the usual tricks for deterring squirrels.

“We couldn’t, for instance, sprinkle pepper over the chocolate bars because little kids buy these things and might rub their eyes afterwards.”

Paul’s final request?

“Please help!”

Mexico’s in turmoil as petrol prices soar high M E X I C AN protests and riots, triggered by a 20% rise in petrol prices, claimed three lives last week.

On the Wednesday, a policeman was killed in Mexico City.

And the following day, two suspected looters were shot dead on the streets of Veracruz city.

In the first five days since the unrest began, Mexican police arrested more than 600 people.

But what caused this dreadful turmoil?

For starters, the Mexican Government announced in late December that it would begin to deregulate petrol and diesel prices, which had previously been set by the state.

On 1st January, when the first stage of new

policy came into effect, petrol prices at the pumps shot up by 20.1% ,and diesel costs rose by 16.5%, sparking widespread unrest.

The situation in Mexico City was calmer last Thursday, but the chaos increased in other regions.

According to Enrique Solana, President of the National Confederation of Chambers of Commerce, some 800 small and medium businesses and 250 large stores suffered nationwide damage.

The police officer who died in Mexico City

was hit by a car as he tried to stop a robbery at a filling station, The following day, police said they had arrested 106 people in the capital and deployed 9,000 extra officers.

And in the State of Mexico, more than 430 people have been arrested for acts of vandalism, say police.

In the port city of Veracruz, two people were shot dead during riots that paralysed the popular tourist destination.

The gunmen have yet to be identified.

Local business leaders

added that over 100 shops had been targets of looting, with damage to the city totalling as much as 4.4m euros.

Unsurprisingly, they called for federal lawenforcement agencies and the army to be brought in.

In Ixmiquilpan, in the central state of Hidalgo, police used tear gas on crowds, but failed to disperse rock-throwing protesters.

According to the local security secretary, gun shots were heard. Eight civilians and five police officers were injured, according to the same source, although it was not clear if those injuries resulted from gunfire.

The protests prompted Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto to make a televised appeal for calm on the Wednesday.

He said the decision to increase the price at the pumps was related to the increase in global oil prices, adding that although it would be a “difficult change”, it was necessary for economic stability.

The full liberalisation of petrol prices was scheduled for 2018, initially, but the Mexican government opted to start the process a year earlier.

Besides the oilprices increase, “the uncertainty about the arrival of Donald Trump, and the future of the North Atlantic Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the depreciation of the peso, raising the minimum wage and rising electricity costs,” all also add to Mexico’s economic concerns, said Gabriela Siller, Banco Base’s Director of Economic Analysis, late last year.

‘Racist’ Morris-Dancers are abused by audience A GROUP of Morris Dancers were forced to abandon a show after being accused of racism for painting their faces black, as is the tradition.

Onlookers say the group, from Alvechurch, Worcestershire, were also threatened by a few people watching during performances near Birmingham’s Bullring shopping centre.

The dancers were one of more than a dozen morris groups, performing in the city centre to celebrate Plough Monday - the traditional start of the agricultural year.

The group arrived at 11am and performed without incident in pubs, to groups of local and visiting football fans, and to the majority of shoppers.

A source close to the group told the Birmingham Mail: “The atmosphere had been great with the vast majority of people, and I was absolutely amazed by the vitriolic abuse they started to receive.

“The issues began when they started dancing near to the Bull outside the Bullring, and later near to Marks and Spencer.

They were roundly abused and threatened with violence.

“One lady was particularly angry, and a group of young men started to become very abusive and confrontational, accusing them of being

racists, which, of course, they are not.

“They started jumping in between the dancers and knocking off their hats. The dancers tried to explain why their faces were painted black, but they would not listen.

“Then things took such a turn for the worse that the performance had to be abandoned.”

The dance group, dressed in black with black painted faces, had given a traditional rendition of a “mummers’ play”, in which they killed a dragon, to crowds outside the Crown Inn pub.

The historical dancers, who formed the group in 1989, perform centuriesold dances, including the White Ladies Aston and The Evesham Stick Dance.

Morris Dancers have performed with blackface make-up since the origins of the dancing tradition, in the 16th century.

The tradition, known as “Border Morris”, sees performers wearing a full-face of black paint to disguise themselves.

But Shrewsbury Folk Festival bosses announced last year that it would no longer book acts wearing full black-face paint.

Equality group Fairness, Respect, Equality Shropshire (Fresh) said the ban showed sensitivity “to a changed social climate”.

But Morris Dancers say there were “no racial connotations”, and that they had “never wanted to upset people”.

‘Swap babies please - this one’s too ugly’ A WOMAN who took her newborn grandson back to the clinic where he was delivered, accused staff of swapping him for another baby because she thought he was too ugly to be her relative!

The unnamed grandma stormed into the clinic in Santa Marta, in Colombia, together with the infant and his mother.

She demanded that staff swap the child back, but they told her there had been just one other baby boy delivered at the clinic on the day he was born, and that it would have been too much of a coincidence for staff to mix the two up.

Santa Marta Council’s Health Secretary, Carlos

Pallares, said: “The grandmother was not very happy.

“She did not identify the baby as a new member of the family and, therefore, she decided to come back to the clinic, along with the mother of the baby, to return him.”

Hospital staff conducted a full check-up on the baby before returning him to the irate grandma. They wanted to ensure that he was not harmed ,or otherwise injured.

The grandma forced the infant’s mother to tag along. but she kept silent throughout.

Council spokesperson Chadan Rosado, claimed that the grandma had been seeing a psychologist because of her mental state.

As a result, officials did not believe she should be judged for her actions, saying she was not in complete control of her own decisions.”

Grannie who stole from shops through boredom

THOUSANDS of Kinder Eggs have been washed up on the beach of a remote island, and no one seems to know why.

The remarkable discovery was made on Langeoog, one of the seven East Frisian Islands, with a population of

just over 1,700, just off the coast of north-east Germany.

And dozens of islanders flocked to the scene to pick up the small plastic toys, enclosed in plastic, inside egg-shaped chocolate.

Children were seen collecting them in bags, as adults pondered how on earth they got there.

It is believed that they were

cargo, which toppled overboard a ship sailing from China to Germany under the flag of Denmark. Yet there is Russian writing on the pieces of paper inside the plastic eggs.

Langeoog’s location, off the German coast, means it is part of one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes, where cargo vessels bring goods into northern Europe.

The killer mudslide M UD S L I D E S , caused by storms in central and northern Argentina, have left at least two people dead, and thousands have had to evacuate the Jujuy province, which borders Chile and Bolivia.

The couple who died were found in a severelydamaged car, believed to have been swept away by the mudslide in Volcan.

Thousands, taking refuge in local churches and schools, were later evacuated by emergency services.

Communications were cut

off with Volcan, Barcenas and Tumbaya when an electricity pylon was swept away by the mudslide.

Emergency co-ordinator Zoe Ali said: “The mud has reached homes and left them completely uninhabitable. These are

small towns, but we have no information on the number of injured or dead.”

Natalia Gennero, Argentine Red Cross communications director, added: “The evacuated people have been transported to five centres.”

A BORED great-gran, who shoplifts to pass the time and has now committed her 39th offence, even stole a breast pump on one occasion.

But Cannock Magistrates’ Court, who heard that 79-year-old June Humphreys had been left with a criminal record “like a teenage heroin addict”, took pity on her.

She started shoplifting in her mid-seventies as something to do to fill her lonely twilight years, and to escape from her home town of Crewe, in Cheshire.

She travels around regularly, using her free buspass, and has pinched goods worth hundreds of pounds off shelves, hiding them in her trolley.

The pensioner’s latest bust came when a supermarket security guard caught her with stolen items from two stores in Stafford last December.

When quizzed by officers, June told them: “I’m bored I suppose. I just wanted to get out of Crewe.”

She was hunched over a shopping trolley and flanked by security guards as she made her way into the court, where she admitted two counts of theft.

The OAP was fined £80 and also told to pay £135 costs and a £30 surcharge.

Mrs Lisa Elkington-Bourne, chairwoman of the bench, told her: “You have got quite a prolific history from over

the last few years, so it’s difficult to know how to deal with it. But we are going to fine you.”

The court was told that the pensioner had 38 previous convictions, all concerning dishonesty, and all committed after she reached her midseventies.

When asked why she had taken goods worth £23.50 on 12th December, she told police officers: “I don’t know why I did it. I just took them, all right?”

She added: “I don’t get anything out of it. I’m bored, I suppose. I just wanted to get out of Crewe.”

The prolific offender was caught by a Sainsbury’s security guard after she took stationery worth £4 from the supermarket.

In her shopping trolley, there were two packs of Pampers nappies and baby milk, worth £19.50 and stolen from the town’s Wilko store earlier that day.

Police had issued a warrant for her arrest after she failed to arrive at court for a scheduled hearing on 30th December.

Neil O’Driscoll, defending, said she had tried to get a bus to Cannock from Crewe but was unaware where she had to go and got lost. But,he added: “She managed find her way to the court today.”

Previously, magistrates had been told how she would target stores, stealing such items as clothes and alcohol.

As for the breast pump, who knows?

The World’s Most Extraordinary Homes BBC2, 21.00

Whether built into the side of a cliff, nestled in a forest, perched at the top of a mountain or under the earth, these are homes that connect to their environment in a spectacular way.

Each episode of the 4x60’ series is themed according to the houses’ environments: Coast, Forest, Mountain and Underground, with Caroline and Piers travelling to locations ranging from North America, Australasia and Europe.

To explore how these dramatic designs function as both works of architecture and as real houses, they stay overnight, eat meals and spend time in the homes. Piers and Caroline are a new and entertaining pairing of a property expert and an architect, both bringing their own expertise, humour and experience as they meet some of the owners and architects of these incredible buildings.

In episode two, Piers and Caroline’s journey starts in an ancient Pine forest just outside Madrid, where the architect’s brief was to weave this contemporary house among the trees themselves. Clad entirely in basalt and glass, the building reflects the surrounding forest whilst the interior contrasts with incredibly bright primary colours.

Their next stop takes them to the USA and to two houses built in the Catskill Mountains in New York State. The first is a very modern tree house, an upside down three-bedroom home with the living space at the top and bedrooms on the bottom, offering an incredible view over the trees themselves. Nestled into the woods, the house is built on a plot the size of a caravan and clad entirely in glass. The second house is equally modern in design. Arriving by helicopter, Caroline and Piers wander around this high-tech, high-spec imposing structure that was constructed much like a sky scraper. With a double height open-plan living area providing panoramic views of the forest, the structure seems to hang into the forest clearing below.

Tonight, viewers will see another fearless bunch hoping they can jump, swing and scramble their way to the semi final but only the top ten from tonight’s show will go through.

This week’s contestants will face The Quintuple Steps, which consist of five two-metre leaps.

Next is the Silk Slider, followed by the Floating Tiles and the Jump Hang with Swing. Up next is a brand new obstacle, the Pipe Climber that consists of three gruelling pipes that they must grapple across.

Finally they will face the 4.25 metre Warped Wall.

Endeavour ITV1, 20.00

Marking the 30th anniversary of Morse on ITV, popular detective drama, Endeavour, returns for a highly anticipated fourth series, penned by acclaimed writer Russell Lewis.

Reprising his role as the young Endeavour Morse, Shauns Evans stars alongside stage and screen actor Roger Allam as mentor, Detective Inspector Fred Thursday, for a brand new set of complex cases.

The fourth series begins in the summer of 1967, barely a fortnight having passed since the events of the Series 3 finale, and we find Oxford’s finest picking up the pieces of their lives, both personal and professional. Whilst Thursday and wife, Win, struggle to process the departure of both their daughter Joan and son, Sam, who has joined the army, Endeavour waits nervously to hear the result of his Sergeant’s exam.

Throwing himself into his work to mask the heartache of Joan leaving, Endeavour is quickly consumed by his duties with an array of new, perplexing cases landing on his desk.

In the second film, the so called ‘permissive society’ comes under the spotlight as Endeavour is tasked with protecting conservative social activist, Joy Pettybon, after she receives a death threat while visiting Oxford to promote her ‘Keep Britain Decent’ campaign.

Also staying near Oxford and recording their new album are a band called The Wildwood and their manager Ralph Spender, who is desperate to maintain their squeaky-clean image in the media spotlight.

However, their harmony is disrupted when the body of local brickie, Barry Finch, is discovered in the middle of Oxford and it transpires that Finch was working at Maplewick Hall, where they band are staying, before he died.

Delving into the social revolution of the time, Endeavour finds himself caught in the crossfire of bitter liberalising forces and deep reactionary conservatism both fighting for the consciences of the British people in 1967. And in this collision of two worlds, Endeavour must explore all avenues before more killings occur.

Call the Midwife: The Casebook BBC1, 17.05 Stephen McGann, better known to Call the Midwife viewers as Dr. Patrick Turner, takes us on a powerful, personal journey as he travels the country to meet midwives, nuns and doctors who experienced the joys and dangers of childbirth in the 1950s and 60s and to explore the real life social and medical changes which affected childbirth of the period.

From meeting a midwife who trained with the author Jennifer Worth with the nuns in the East End of London, Stephen’s journey will introduce him to an expert on the history of midwifery, a photographer who chronicled the appalling social conditions of the time and a nun who became a midwife and subsequently left orders in order to have a child of her own. He also revisits the home where he was born, to tell his very own Call the Midwife story.

Shot in an observational style, using archive footage, expert interviews and moving personal stories the film tracks the birth of the NHS, highlights the beginnings of a modern multicultural Britain, the impact of contraception on the sexual revolution and how scientific medical advances changed the way we live.

With clips from all five seasons of Call the Midwife (as well as exclusive behind the scenes footage and clips from the new Season Six) the film also features an in-depth interview with series creator and writer Heidi Thomas on how she finds and adapts the genuine human stories that underpin every episode of Call the Midwife.

This is the story of the dramatic social and medical changes that affected home life and childbirth in the UK in the 1950s and 60s.

Antiques Roadshow has collaborated with the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation to create a special edition of the programme, looking at artefacts from the Holocaust and exploring the extraordinary stories behind them.

Hosted by Fiona Bruce, the experts meet Holocaust survivors, their relatives and those of camp liberators, whose stories are told through a range of different artefacts from the time.

The items include clothing and objects from concentration camps: letters, family jewellery hidden from the Nazis, and sketches by children’s author Judith Kerr. As well as thank-you presents given from survivors to camp liberators, artwork created to keep alive the memory of survivors will also feature. However, in a rare break from tradition the items will not be valued, due to their priceless nature and historical importance.

Broadcaster Natasha Kaplinsky explains her role in the work of the UK Holocaust Memorial Foundation, which involved conducting over 100 interviews, and she meets again the woman who moved her the most, who talks about life in Belsen.

Written by Tahsin Guner. Sid, recently released from prison, buys a gun outside his caravan. The next day Father Brown reunites Sid with Bunty (Emer Kenny) and Mrs McCarthy (Sorcha Cusack), who insists on cooking him a hot meal. When Sid leaves suddenly, Father Brown follows him to a function where Edward Reece (Simon Shepherd) is honouring his latest judicial appointee Giles (David Reed).

Sid confronts Giles, his former defence barrister, accusing him of burying a witness statement which suggests that his supposed victim of assault was coerced into incriminating Sid. Edward sees the commotion and orders Sid and Father Brown off the property. But Sid runs back and as Father Brown follows a scream is heard. Giles has been killed, a broken champagne glass in his throat. When Edward’s son Randolph (Alex Felton) tells Inspector Mallory (Jack Deam) that Sid did it, Sid is quickly arrested.

Can Father Brown clear his name this time?

Martin Clunes Islands of Australia

Surrounded by the warm waters of the Arafura Sea,16 miles off the Australian coast, lies one of the nation’s most exotic, colourful destinations. On the next leg of his journey Martin travels to the heart of the tropical north to a destination known as the “the islands of smiles” – the Tiwi Islands.

More than three and a half thousand Tiwis live on the islands. They’ve been there for millennia, and they’re one of Australia’s most distinctive Aboriginal cultures. Thanks to their isolation from the mainland, the Tiwis have kept many ancient traditions alive. They treat Martin to a welcome of traditional yoi dancing to ensure he has only friendly spirits around him whilst he’s on the islands.

Martin joins a group of women as they teach young local girls how to forage through a mangrove swamp for bush tucker including longbum shells, mud mussels and mangrove worms. He also meets Tiwi artist Pedro Wonaeamirri, whose artwork sells internationally for thousands of dollars a piece. Pedro shows Martin how Tiwi art unites the traditional customs and the land itself.

But the Tiwi Islands have their modern face too. Australian Rules Football is an obsession there, and a third of islanders play it. It’s been an astonishing success story for young Tiwi boys, transforming some of them into national celebrities.

“It’s been a real privilege to visit the Tiwi Islands. Not only because of the incredibly warm welcome I’ve had from everyone, but also to see an indigenous community celebrating their ancient history while at the same time embracing the 21st century and making it work for them,” Martin says.

Ningaloo Reef is Western Australia’s greatest natural wonder. It’s not as famous as the Great Barrier Reef, though unlike its crowded counterpart, you can reach Ningaloo Reef by walking straight off the beach. It has a cluster of islands of its own; known as the “Magical Muirons”.

Martin swims amongst the vividly colourful coral gardens, with damselfish, butterfly fish, clownfish, groupers, codfish, stingrays and turtles. But for the biggest encounter of all, Martin heads back towards the main reef – to swim with the whale shark, the world’s largest fish.

As a “citizen scientist” he photographs his sightings to help biologists build a picture of this mysterious creature about which we still know little.

“This is what great diving’s all about: exploring the pristine coral beds of the remote Muiron Islands, swimming with the friendly creatures that live there, and meeting the ocean’s ultimate gentle giant.”

It is a 500 mile journey from his last stop to the Houtman Abrolhos – a string of over 100 little islands some 50 miles off the coast. The first Westerner to reach this archipelago was a Dutch sea captain called Frederik Houtman. He named it the Abrolhos, an old Portuguese word that effectively meant “Look out! Treacherous reefs ahead.”

Martin arrives at the Islands in time for Anzac Day, a national holiday that attracts hundreds to these remote coral skirted islands for a dawn service and the Last Post.

Once the crowds leave, life returns to normal for the small community of cray fishermen who spend months at a time here every year.

It’s a way of life that’s quiet, remote and simple. The only way to overnight here is to be invited by a fisherman. Martin is the guest of Aaron McAullay, who’s been living on the island during cray season all of his life. Martin learns how to fish for crays, and how this is one of the world’s prime examples of sustainable fishing.

In stark contrast to the peace of the islands now, their history is one of mutiny and bloody murder. Martin is taken out to see what remains of the wreck of the Batavia, sunk here in 1629. Most of the 316 Dutch passengers and crew managed to get to shore. But the lack of food and fresh water was only the beginning of their problems. A small group of rebels mutinied against the leaders and began a horrific programme of bloody murder. A search party from Dutch Indonesia eventually rescued the survivors and the murderous mutineers were tried and hanged.

It’s the second episode, and four days in, the celebrities’ irritability is rising as the effects of their new diet kick in. Also rising is Gemma’s weight, a perplexing mystery. She says: “I’ve put on four pounds since I’ve been here…I don’t know what’s going on. Maybe I’ve gained muscle!”

Comedian and novice cook Joe is in unfamiliar territory in the kitchen, and he also faces another challenging situation: “I’m finding myself constipated, a little bit bunged up at the moment.”

Also, as the famous faces learn to appreciate the natural animal and dairy fats on the farm, Alison and Stavros make cheese and butter from scratch, and a disgusted Ann discovers what really goes into the low fat spreads she eats every day. She says: “Well this is disgusting… it’s just chemicals. Eurgh. I’ve been eating this muck. Never again is it on my shopping list.”

Out in the chicken sheds, Gemma continues her quest to find a farmer husband, and asks Farmer James: “So James, if you’re a farmer, do you have to marry a farming girl?...I think a farmer man is the way forward for me.”

Meanwhile, as Peter returns to the farm following his medical drama, Alison suffers a dizzy spell and is referred to hospital for a full diabetes test. She says: “I am a little bit nervous right now, because it’s in my family and I could have it.”

Also in episode two, Joe does some ‘trout whispering’ while out fishing, temperatures rise between Gemma and Stavros Flatley, and when two of the famous farmhands are caught having a midnight feast the chickens really come home to roost!

September 2016: Stacey Dooley embeds herself on the frontline with the extraordinary all-female Yazidi battalion, who are fuelled to take revenge against the so-called Islamic State. In 2014, 50,000 Yazidis fled their ancestral lands in northern Iraq, away from the advance of ISIS. Without food and water, thousands died on the mountain and the ones left behind were massacred or captured. More than 5,000 women were taken to be used as sex slaves, with an estimated 2,000 women remaining in captivity. Two years after the genocide, Stacey spends two weeks with this battalion of brave young women.

Many of them have escaped the incomprehensible horrors of ISIS and are determined to rescue other Yazidi women. These female fighters strike fear into the heart of the jihadists as they believe if they are killed by a woman they will not make it to the heavenly afterlife.

When DCI Barnaby and DS Winter discover a dead body covered in live rabbits it reveals a sinister side to the local pet show. Is this a rivalry taken too far or is the killer driven by something darker?

Under cover of darkness, local Estate Agent Seb Huntington releases animals from their cages at the Belville Small Pet Show. Someone confronts Seb and the following morning Ailsa Benson arrives to set up her pet food stall to find Seb dead, surrounded by escaped bunnies...

At the crime scene Barnaby and Winter meet Locum Pathologist Dr Oliver Marcet. While Winter hides his disappointment that Kam is on a course, Barnaby learns the victim died from a stab wound to the neck. Hearing Ailsa Benson’s alibi, Barnaby and Winter next interview Seb’s distraught girlfriend Tegan Langton and her boss, Hall owner and Pet Show patron the stately Delphi Hartley. Finding no reason anyone would want to harm Seb or sabotage the show, they leave Tegan to be comforted by best friend Shray Varma - watched from afar by the mysterious Errol Judd. Barnaby and Winter go to see Cleo Langton, Tegan’s mum and Seb’s boss at the Estate Agents, and discover Seb was trying to get Delphi to sell the hall, but Delphi wasn’t interested. Theorising the murderer might be a competitor sabotaging the show, Barnaby and Winter next visit Best In Show defending champion Timothy Benson, whose alibi unwittingly throws suspicion back onto his estranged wife Ailsa. Timothy is distraught to discover Hercules has been kidnapped. Meanwhile in a secret room an unknown figure strokes the sleeve of a luxury fur coat.

When Winter gleans from Seb’s computer that he was sabotaging the show, Barnaby posits that someone murdered Seb to stop him. Winter reveals that local hotelier Perry Tressel has form for animal rights campaigning and fits the bill. Winter follows up on Ailsa’s dodgy alibi at the pet shop, learning of her affair with charming builder Jayesh Varma and sensing Ailsa is hiding something. At the pet friendly hotel he runs with wife Belinda, Perry dismisses his activism as ancient history. Upset at having uncovered wife Ailsa’s affair with charming builder Jayesh Varma, Barnaby witnesses Timothy accuse fellow competitor Cleo of stealing Hercules so she will win Best In Show. Cleo drives off, passing Errol Judd. She immediately turns round and attempts to run him over.

Hospital BBC2, 21:00

Six-part documentary capturing the day-to-day realities facing the NHS right now. With nearly all of St Mary’s 297 beds occupied, the hospital must discharge patients before any new ones can be admitted. Peter Lai, a 60-year-old retired software engineer, arrives at the hospital for a lifesaving operation on an aortic aneurysm in his chest. It has taken two months to co-ordinate the diaries of the expert team, led by consultant Colin Bicknell. But unless the hospital staff can clear a bed for him, Peter’s operation won’t go ahead. Discharge Nurse Sister Alice Markey is trying to discharge a homeless Polish man, but until she can find a translator to explain what will happen to him when he leaves St Mary’s, the man will remain in a hospital bed. Another patient the hospital needs to discharge is 91-year-old Dolly. After breaking her ankle, Dolly has been in hospital for three weeks while she waits for a place in a rehabilitation centre.

Britain’s Benefit Tenants Channel 4, 22:00

As the council housing shortage worsens, Britain’s two million private landlords have been buying up houses. Now, more than half of tenants on benefits are renting privately and as austerity cuts and changes to the benefit system bite, lettings agencies specialising in housing benefit are feeling the pressure. In Hull and Grimsby rent collection has become a game of cat and mouse. Letting agents are going to further lengths to track down tenants who have left their landlords out of pocket. In Hull, Jeremy runs Cody’s Estates with his wife. They are on the trail of a tenant who has left his flat damaged.

There’s £1000 worth of damages, and to add insult to injury the landlord’s curtains are missing. Meanwhile, in Grimsby, letting agent Harp has his faith restored when one of his tenants cleans up the mess at his property as promised, but will he come good on his rent arrears of over £3000?

Tonight, on their cruise round the Mediterranean the weather takes a turn for the worse causing an emergency at sea and threatening to make one young British couple’s wedding a washout.

The ship comes across a semi-submerged boat and on the bridge, the captain must make some critical decisions. It’s the first time new officer Lauren has to deal with an emergency on board and she must keep constant watch on the wreck as it threatens to disappear amid the swell. Concerned there may be lives at stake, the rescue team are poised for action.

Despite choppy seas, the show must go on in the ship’s theatre, where the magicians are attempting to pull off a gravity-defying illusion that sees ex-dancer Trish balance on the tip of a metal sword. It’s a heartstopping performance for passengers as the unpredictable weather ramps up the danger of their daring headline act.

Passengers Kat and Dave from Norfolk have brought 17 of their closest friends and family with them to witness their dream wedding. But if staff can’t mop up the flooded decks in time, it could be a soggy ceremony. That’s if the bride, who’s running late, ever makes it to the altar.

And on the passenger services desk, galley assistant Nico goes from making sandwiches to answering guest queries as he embarks on his first trial shift. Mentored by front desk veterans Timothy and Emma, it’s a big leap into one of the most challenging departments on board – but will he have what it takes?

In this series, three former spies put 15 men and women to the test to see if they have the skills and qualities required for that battle. Halfway through the course, 10 trainees remain. Control must use a series of exercises to decide who they’ll take on the course’s final overseas challenge: a brutal decision they’ll be forced to make shortly. Among the exercises is one of the most notorious in spy training. Control tell the trainees to enter a pub and - with nothing but their own guile and imagination - extract key intelligence from unwitting strangers. Roopi impresses with her natural performance, but Lisa and Hugo almost blow their cover, and serious questions are raised about Rohan. In another exercise Control bring in two former detectives to challenge the trainees’ ability to defend their cover, but one of them falls at the first hurdle.

Fasnia charity run

The ‘Discover Fasnia’ Charity Run aims to raise awareness of and assist the area’s needy people. The run takes place on Saturday 14 January 2017 from 9:30 am, when the first category – children aged 5 to 13 – will set out from the main square in Fasnia. This will be followed by the event for people with functional disabilities.

The adult race starts from the Square at 10.30.

A close shave for Meet Chase the charity King K9 Animal news

RAY King was beginning to lose faith in mankind until he began raising funds for the Helping Hands charity some two months ago.

Now, having raised a staggering 2,200 euros after being overwhelmed by the generosity of the customers and staff at The Penny Farthing & The Swan bars in Los Cristianos, his belief has been restored.

But Ray didn’t put out the begging bowl. Oh no!

He decided to grow a beard … then shave it off to raise funds.

Liz Montague, who runs Helping Hands here in the South, said: “I’m so delighted for Ray. A huge big thankyou goes out to him, to all the owners and staff at both bars, and to all the customers for their help and support for Ray’s big charity event.”

As well as Ray’s good news, Liz is looking optimistically

to the new year, saying: “We at Helping Hands in Tenerife are feeling positive and excited about future plans for our children’s charity.

“We will continue to be active with our fund-raising events, focusing on new projects and looking to spread our wings, helping even more under-privileged children and families.”

Last year, through various fund-raising events, Helping Hands raised a magnificent 32,610 euros. And 31,000 euros of that total contributed to the following: *Crevo Rehabilitation Centre Project, purchasing specialised computers and various aids for the children, including completion of the swimming pool *Providing essential school books and materials for the children of Guaidyl, and implementing the centre’s teaching facilities *Providing summer activities for Centro Guaidyl & CEE School; funding academy and language courses; Christmas

gifts and parties for the children *Essential equipment for Guargacho CEE Disabled School *Supporting individual cases, by purchasing essential equipment for under-privileged families *Donations to the families attached to the collapsedbuilding disaster in Los Cristianos Liz added: “All this work was achieved through the continued support from local businesses and through fundraising events.

“We are immensely proud that the charity is growing, and that we are making a difference and helping those in need, which is our aim.

“Thank you all for your continued support. We look forward to seeing you at one or more of our fund-raising events soon.

Chase came to the refuge six weeks ago, when a change of circumstances in his family meant they could no longer look after him. They were very sad to let him go, and he was sad to lose them, but he understands why it had to be that way.

He says: “I am a young dog, only seven months old, and love to have fun. My people here at K9 say I am such a friendly and sweet-natured boy. I get on really well with everyone, and am always eager to please.

“I also love my walks and learning new things. I’m very good on and off the lead, and always come back when called. I get on well with other dogs, but, as I’m told is often the case in a refuge environment for young lads like me, I sometimes feel overwhelmed by being amongst so many other pupsters.

“I have a best friend, Toby, at K9, but he leaves to live with his new family in Germany soon. I will miss him, and really hope I’ll have my own, forever home soon.

“Do you have a place in your heart for me, please?

Off to Germany!

LAST week, three lucky dogs travelled to Germany to start their new lives, and this lucky little chap got his first taste of playing in the snow something he’s never experienced before.

We are always looking for people travelling to Germany who would like to help by escorting a dog. All the legalities and costs for the dog are met by Aktiontier.

They are checked in at Tenerife Sur by Accion del Sol staff, and Aktiontier workers are there to receive the dogs in Germany. So, if you are travelling to Germany and would like to help, please give us a call on the number below.

Microchips We can never express enough the importance of having your dog microchipped with the correct, updated telephone number. This will ensure that if your dog does get lost, it will be returned to you.

We have so many dogs

without microchips arriving at the refuge, which can be very upsetting for the pet and owner alike.

Dealing With Hairballs Cats are cleanliness freaks. They groom themselves compulsively, and every time they do, tiny hooklike structures on their tongues catch loose and dead hair, which is then swallowed.

The majority of this hair passes through the digestive tract, with no problems.

But, if some hair stays in the stomach, it can form a hairball.

Symptoms It can be disturbing to watch (and hear) your cat eliminating a hairball. Some common symptoms include hacking, gagging and retching. Usually, your cat will then vomit the hairball.

Nothing can be done to totally prevent them in cats, but there are things you can do to reduce the likelihood your cat will have them, or reduce their frequency, if they do.

Groom your cat regularly Brush your cat daily to get rid of the loose hairs that cause hairballs. If they’re on your brush, they’re not in his

belly.

Wipe down your cat After grooming, use baby wipes to get rid of the loose hairs on your cat.

Smear Vaseline on his paws When your cat licks his paws, the petroleum jelly lubricates his digestive tract, and allows the hairs to pass through easily.

High-fibre diet Feeding your cat high-fibre foods helps to move the hairs along the tract. Look for hairball-formula varieties of cat biscuits.

Serve your cat sardines

The oil in sardines is a natural laxative. Give your cat this pungent treat to move things along, and earn popularity points.

Distract your cat If you find your cat grooming himself a bit too much, put a stop to it by using distracting activities, such as teaching him to play with a new toy. Engaging your cat keeps him healthy mentally and physically - so it’s a win-win situation.

When cared for properly, cats can live well into their late teens, and sometimes early twenties. It’s a big, long-term commitment, but one that can bring much love and companionship.

WHAT’S not to love?

Eggs are such a simple food, yet are high in protein, extremely nutrient-dense and a good source of fat, including omega-3s, if you pick the right type.

They are versatile: good for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

They even come in tidy little packages, which travel well.

And eggs are inexpensive, especially for the amount of nutrition and enjoyment you get. Yes, eggs really are wholesome, and tasty, but how much do you know about cooking them?

Here are some tips, tricks, and guidelines to make the most of your eggs.

How to know if they’re spoiled Place your eggs in a bowl of cold water. If they sink, they’re good. If they float, they’ve gone bad. If they start to float but keep one end on the bottom, they’re good, but not for long. By the way, in days gone by, this method also worked for determining the guilt of suspected witches.

How to boil them to your desire Place them in a pot or pan

Eggs are such a cracking choice

and fill with water until it reaches midway up the eggs.

Remove them and set aside.

Bring the water to a boil at medium/medium-high heat (4 on a scale of 6).

Return the eggs to the nowboiling water and cover the pot. *For soft-boiled, remove eggs after 6mins 30secs. *For medium-boiled, remove eggs after eight minutes. *For hard-boiled, remove after 10 minutes. After removing eggs, place under cold, running water for at least 30 seconds. Drop the cooking time by 30-45 seconds if your eggs are room temperature.

Softer yolks are better for you than harder yolks. The harder the yolk, the more oxidised cholesterol (which, coincidentally, may not be huge issue for people who eat just a few eggs occasionally, but the more eggs you eat, the more it matters).

Softer yolks are just better, honestly!

Prawn stars cost an arm and a leg

RED Denia prawns were selling at 101 euros a kilo as the New Year arrived.

And a week earlier, they had fetched up to 150 euros on the Costa Blanca’s harbourside auctions at Denia Port as restaurants and families snapped them up for Christmas.

Prices boomed because of bad weather, which kept Javea and Denia boats in the port for several days, and meant fewer prawns in their usual fishing grounds, between Cabo de San Antonio and Ibiza.

Catches have now recovered as stocks are replenishing, which promises a better result than the fishing guild feared.

Amadeu Ros, skipper of the Cap Prim Segon, said: “Over the last three weeks, boats have been bringing in between 20 and 30kg a day.”

Trawlers are catching increasing numbers of mud shrimps, which is a bio-indicator, determining environment quality, that the fishing grounds are teeming with life, added Ros. Overall, this year’s prices were better than 2015’s maximum of 102 euros a kilo. But they were a short of the 206 euros red prawns fetched in 2006.

Denia’s red prawns are rated the best in Spain because of the unusually high levels of iodine and salt in the flesh, which provide a unique flavour.

How to peel boiled eggs Let the egg come to room temperature, either with cool water or time, and roll it along the kitchen worktop to create a web of mini-cracks.

This seems to separate the white from the shell and make peeling easier. But remember, if you’re not already aware, the fresher the egg, the more difficult it is to peel.

How to “boil” eggs and make them pop out of their shells Use the steam-setting on an electric pressure cooker, like the Instant Pot, for two minutes (for soft-boiled), three minutes (for mediumboiled), and four minutes (for hard-boiled but not overdone). Place in ice-water for a minute and the peel should slip right off.

How to eat boiled eggs Two ways (if you’re posh): kosher salt and kelp powder; or kosher salt, black pepper, and turmeric.

How to cook an omelette You can knock one up in around 20-30 seconds, with two eggs and a tablespoon of butter!

How to scramble eggs There are two acceptable ways.

First is Gordon Ramsay’s method, which involves lots of whisking, lots of butter, and crème fraiche.

Scrambled eggs this way come out soft and slightly wet. Another method is to heat butter (or olive oil) in a stainless-steel pan over medium-high heat, crack whole eggs into it, and let them cook a bit, as if you were doing sunny-side-up eggs.

When the bottom begins to set, go to work with your spatula, chopping and cutting and breaking up the eggs.

Scrambling, in other words.

Take the eggs off before they cook fully.

How to fry an egg Let the pan get hot over medium heat. Don’t rush it.

Don’t be impatient. If you don’t wait, the egg will stick to the bottom and the yolk will probably break prematurely.

Once a drop of water sizzles into nothingness against the surface, add the fat and let it melt. Crack the eggs in. Let a shape start to form to give you a few options. *Drop in a tablespoon of water and cover a cast-iron pan, steaming the egg. *Flip the egg and turn off the heat, letting the pan cook the other side. *Turn the heat down and let the egg continue cooking through to the other side.

How to poach eggs without ruining them These are annoying, timeconsuming, and often messy.

But they’re impressive and delicious when you get it right. Forget the swirling vortex, the poaching contraptions, the agony, the heartache; poach your eggs in a mesh strainer. And use the freshest eggs possible.

How to get broken shells out of a cracked egg We’ve all spent fruitless hours chasing the wily little devils around the pan with our fingers. But if you just use a jagged piece of egg shell itself, you can cut right through the white and nab the fragments.

How to use yolks to thicken sauces Butter and cream make for rich sauces, but a favourite way is to take the sauce off the heat and whisk in two raw yolks, adding viscosity and nutrition.

Do try duck eggs Don’t give up chicken eggs altogether; work duck eggs into the mix. If you can get them for the same price per egg, you’ll come out ahead because they are far richer and larger than chicken eggs.

Plus, according to an admittedly-biased source (DuckEggs.com), duck eggs are more nutritious than chicken eggs on a gram-forgram basis.

How long do eggs stay fresh?

They last longer than you think, even outside the fridge.

Eggs are good for a couple months in the fridge. Eggs can be left out for almost a month; not during the heat of Tenerife, but in fairly warm temperatures (75 ºF).

Always do the cool-water test (explained above) before tossing them.

Once refrigerated, always refrigerated. If your eggs have been refrigerated, they can’t become counter eggs. Avoid condensation on the shells.

How to pick your eggs When choosing eggs, look for a carton with a cracked egg. Play around with the broken shell a bit (it’s already broken, so no harm), to see how much give it has.

Avoid weak shells, which aren’t just hard to handle without breaking, but also indicate nutrient deficiencies or excessive stress in the hen’s life.

A cracked egg may even give you a glimpse of the yolk; you want dark, orange yolks whenever possible.

What to do with all the shells Boil them, bake them, and grind them into calcium carbonate powder, or add them to your garden soil as a mineral supplement.

A real eye-opener

By Vanessa Vee It is quite awkward for us, living on an island, or as some put it, “A rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean”.

But life is too short not to discover this wonderful world in which we live, or, as someone once said: “Travel is the only thing you buy that makes you richer.”

We are fortunate to have two fantastic airports here in Tenerife, and we are also supported by two interisland ferry companies, all of which offer a resident’s discount to those holding the correct paperwork if travelling within Spanish territory, and even closer to home.

And don´t forget the fabulous bus service.

We also have a huge influx of cruise-liners into Santa Cruz port.

But, unfortunately for us residents, it is not as simple as embarking and disembarking as we would wish.

And even though the majority of international cruise companies do dock here, there is only a handful which allow us to get on or off!

So we’re looking at travelling right here.

Don’t try to kid me that you have been everywhere on this Island because there is so much to discover here. I wish I had the

time to stay away from work and home do some exploring.

The beauty of Tenerife is that if you need a quick escape, a trip to the North, namely Puerto de la Cruz, seems like a mini-break to another country.

It’s a real trip back in time with the original Tenerife holiday resort’s historic tales, grand hotels and, usually, an alternative climate.

Puerto de la Cruz can deliver a combination of true Canarian culture and charm. You can live the lifestyle, coupled with all the facilities of a holiday resort.

Puerto is a complete contrast to the purpose-built resorts of the South and West of Tenerife.

Cobbles, traditional

restaurants and cafés are popular trademarks of this former fishing village, where life still revolves around the picturesque harbour, as well as the fantastic lido.

As I’ve already said, Puerto features a completely different climate and is often, to the shock of those who have only ever visited the South, described as GREEN! With many local attractions, some ticketed, and some free, there is always something going on.

But to sit by the lido and watch the world pass you by is an absolute treat.

Many hotels, now a little tired and usually reflected in the price, still tend to provide the quality, high-standard service.

Really old school!

One gentleman who sticks out in my mind used to be the receptionist in the Martianez. How I loved that hotel, and I retain so many great memories of our short breaks in Puerto, whether it be with friends, Christmas, birthdays or romantic.

I loved this hotel. It was stuck in a Sixties’ time-warp, but the service was impeccable.

So it was a joy to bump into him working at the H10 Bahia Principe just a few years ago. But alas, no more Martianez, so I won´t dwell on it.

Instead, let’s have a look at what is on offer now.

From one-key dwellings to five-star luxury spas, there is something to suit all budgets.

From room-only, self-

catering and right through to all-inclusive - they are all there!

But it would be a shame to visit to this wonderful town on an all-inclusive deal when there are so many

Seagull diverts Tenerife plane AIRLINES can plan for most things, but a seagull impact is one of the rarer problems.

And what a nuisance it was for Tuesday’s Thomson Airways flight from Bournemouth to Tenerife South.

The plane had barely taken off when a seagull crashed into an engine, causing the pilot to divert and land at Gatwick.

The seagull’s impact was enough to shatter the core of an engine on the TOM628 flight.

Passengers said they heard a thud and felt vibrations soon after take-off, and the early-morning flight made an emergency landing at Gatwick with no on-board injuries.

Passengers praised the pilot and crew on social media for their cool response.

The flight crew announced that there had been a “bird strike” and said they were diverting to Gatwick, where there were better facilities to deal with the engine.

A picture posted on Twitter showed the pilot talking to the passengers after the unscheduled landing.

He was holding a plastic bag, which, claimed one traveller, held the seagull’s remains.

A quick crew-change later saw the Tenerifebound plane taking off early that afternoon.

A Thomson spokesperson said: “The plane was diverted to Gatwick as a precautionary measure. We would like to reassure customers that issues of this nature are very rare.”

For the first time, a link has been discovered between stress and anxiety, and cardiovascular disease, and scientists at Harvard Medical School now know why.

The researchers’ findings, the strongest yet to associate mental well-being with physical health, suggest that doctors should start regarding those with chronic stress as being at risk of heart attacks.

In a four-year trial, they used high-tech MRI scanners to examine the brains, hearts and bone marrow of nearly 300 patients.

They found that people with higher activity in the amygdala region of the brain (the part associated with stress), were 59% more likely, over the next 3.7 years, to develop heart failure or angina, or suffer a heart attack or stroke.

Examination of the scans, published in the Lancet medical journal, showed that people with an over-active amygdala also had more clotting in the aorta, which is the main artery to the heart.

The images also

showed greater cellular activity in the bone marrow.

The team believe this is because the stressed brain sends signals to the bone marrow to produce extra-white blood cells.

They play a crucial role in supporting the immune system, a natural defence mechanism if someone feels under threat.

But, if too many white blood cells are produced, it encourages clotting in the arteries, which become inflamed and furred.

And that is a major cause of heart attack and strokes.

Lead author Dr Ahmed Tawakol, of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, said: “Our results provide a unique insight into how stress may lead to cardiovascular disease.

“This raises the possibility that reducing stress could produce benefits that extend beyond an improved sense of psychological wellbeing.

“Eventually, chronic stress could be treated as an important riskfactor for cardiovascular disease, which is screened routinely for, and effectively managed, like other major cardiovascular-disease risk-factors.”

In a linked comment in the Lancet, Dr Ilze Bot of Leiden University in the Netherlands, writes: “In the past decade, more and more individuals experience psycho-social stress on a daily basis.

“Heavy workloads,

job insecurity or living in poverty are circumstances that can result in chronicallyincreased stress, which, in turn, can lead to chronic psychological disorders such as depression.”

She said more research was needed to confirm the new findings, but added: “This clinical data establishes a connection between stress and cardiovascular disease; thus, identifying chronic stress as a true risk-factor for acute cardiovascular syndromes.

“This could, given the increasing number of individuals with chronic stress, be included in risk assessments of all cardiovascular diseases in daily clinical practice.”

Emily Reeve, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “The link between stress and the increased risk of developing heart disease has previously focused on the lifestyle habits people take up when they feel stressed, such as smoking, drinking too much alcohol and overeating.

“Exploring the brain’s management of stress, and discovering why it increases the risk of heart disease, will allow us to develop new ways of managing chronic psychological stress.”

She added: “This could lead to ensuring that patients who are at risk are routinely screened, and that their stress is managed effectively.”

Mind the gaps, kids!

EXPERTS have revealed alarming figures regarding tooth decay in children, despite the controversial addition of fluoride to the tap water in many areas.

Nearly 41,000 are admitted to hospital each year to have rotten teeth removed under general anaesthetic.

More than 160 extractions are carried out each day, with experts blaming the high consumption of sugary food and drink. When the damage is too severe to be dealt with by a dental surgery, the procedure has to take place in hospital.

Professor Nigel Hunt, Dean of the dental faculty at the Royal College of Surgeons, said: “The awful impact sugar is having on our children’s teeth is brutally evident in the number of under-18s we are seeing daily, who need more than one tooth extracted because of decay.

“It is shameful that a problem which is 90% preventable continues to plague our children in this way. And it is costing struggling councils

millions of pounds each year.

“Having teeth removed can be very traumatising for children, and requires time away from school for them, as well as time away from work for their parents.

“The Government’s sugar tax will go some way to cutting the sugar consumption that leads to tooth decay. But it also needs to support publichealth campaigns which

remind parents of good oral health.”

The Professor added: “We need to drum home the message that, by brushing teeth regularly with fluoride toothpaste, reducing sugar consumption and making use of free NHS dental treatment for under-18s by visiting the dentist routinely, we can end the costly scourge of sugar on our children’s teeth.”

Official figures show there were 40,800 hospital operations to remove multiple teeth among under18s in 2015/16, at a cost of £35.6m.

The total is 10.7% up on 2012/13, according to the Local Government Association.

Izzi Seccombe of the LGA said: “These figures are a stark reminder of the damage that excessive sugar consumption is doing to our children’s teeth.

“It is deeply worrying that the type of dental treatment required is beyond the capacity of a local dentist, because of the severity of tooth decay, and, as a result, has to be done in a hospital.”

Tooth decay is the leading cause of hospital admissions among children.

While some of the procedures are probably required for orthodontic reasons, experts said the vast majority would be for tooth decay.

Mick Armstrong, chairman of the British Dental Association, said: “The millions spent on children’s tooth extractions in hospitals are symbolic of the Government’s disinterest in oral health.

“We simply cannot keep pouring NHS resources into avoidable surgery, while ministers fail to deliver the goods on prevention.”

The figures come after a Public Health England warning that children consume half their daily recommended sugar intake before school, with almost three teaspoons of sugar being eaten at breakfast-time alone.

The Government recommends that youngsters aged 4-6 have no more than 19gms, or five teaspoons, of sugar a day. Youngsters aged 7-10 should consume no more than 24gms, which is one extra spoonful.

Children in the UK are also the biggest consumers of soft drinks in Europe, with 40% of those aged from 11-15 drinking them at least once a day.

Children aged 11-18 get 40% of their added sugars from soft drinks, according to the LGA. A Government spokesman said: “It is shocking to see so many children having teeth removed. Parents should help their children to brush their teeth regularly, and avoid sugary drinks.”

BOXER Mike Tyson was the toughest, roughest man on the planet, both inside the ring, and out, and Paul Breen-Turner was facing a possible hiding from the bristling, former World Champion.

“He came into the Talksport studio for our interview,” recalled Paul, “and, in my earpiece, my producer suggested that I offered him a bit of sparring practice, egging me on.

“Mike, being Mike, didn’t take it the right way, and, for a horrible moment, I thought he was going to give me a smack.

“My producer said: ‘We’re going to be on the front page of the papers if he does’.

“Iron Mike wasn’t impressed with it at all, and suggested we go outside. I told him that I was a bit busy, and declined the invitation!

“Some people say I was hiding behind my co-presenter Rodney Marsh, others said that he kind of got in the middle!”

The 51-yearold Oasis Fm DJ has the world’s only radio s h o w , broadcast from a travelling sailing boat: his!

P a u l , currently moored in the Bay of Gibraltar, has lived on his 40foot yacht for the last couple of years.

Shortly after his birth in Birmingham, his parents took him to live in his mother’s native South Africa, and he returned to the UK several years later.

He left home at 17.

“I was going to join the Royal Navy,” he said, “but went into sales and marketing instead.”

He subsequently moved to mainland Spain when he was 20, and fell in love with the country and its culture. “I worked in beach-bars and had a lot of fun,” he said.

“But I returned to the UK because I thought I’d better get a serious job!

The fury of Tyson… voice, which might be suited to radio, and BBC Bristol were looking for somebody in the sports department.

So I worked there, and, with them, studied how to be a sports journalist.

“This was an incredible experience, because they’re just the best in the business. To be able to learn from scratch with those guys was absolutely amazing.

“I travelled a lot and covered football, as well as other events and breaking-news stories.

I then freelanced for other UK radio stations.

“After a few years, I decided to return to jetset Marbella, even though I’m certainly not jet set!”

He added: “I did some expat radio work, and, out of the blue, I was head-hunted

by Talksport, a national, drivetime show in the UK, who had heard me on air.

“It was all whirlwind, really, and m i n d blowing.

They

paired me up with the legendary Rodney Marsh, who was the David Beckham of the seventies.

“He was a remarkable footballer, who played for QPR, Manchester City and Fulham, and alongside the iconic Pele, in America.

“Rodney was an original seventies superstar with the good looks, and was controversial and outspoken. I did the afternoon show with him, and we had great ratings, as well as incredible moments with people like Tyson.

“On a sad note,” Paul reminisced, “we did the last-ever interview with George Best, 12 years ago.

Rodney had played football with him at Fulham, and, following their retirement, they did after-dinner speaking as a double act.

“They were two great characters.

Rodney contacted George because he was a bit down on his luck, and things weren’t going well.

“I had met him 10 years earlier and I was shocked because, now, he was really ill and clearly unwell.

“But he came into the studio and wanted to stay for the full hour we’d booked him. It was

almost as though he knew it was going to be his last interview.

“I remember him saying that if just one person could forget the drink and the Miss Worlds, and remember him as being a good footballer, he’d be happy.

“About five days later, my producer called to say that he’d been rushed to hospital, and, three days later, he died. That hit us both hard, and the interview is a very special memory.”

Their stint on the programme came to an end, because of Rodney’s numerous other commitments.

As for life on the ocean wave, Paul learned to sail about six years ago, and completed his RYA Yachtmaster course. He has been based in Gibraltar for a while, because he commentates on Gibraltar TV. The Gibraltar team have been entered

by FIFA as one of the latest members of the European and World-Cup qualifying matches, and Paul covers their games.

He added: “I’ve loved my career in broadcasting. I’ve been with Oasis Fm for several years, and it’s been a real pleasure.”

P a u l ’ s Drivetime show is on air M o n d a y - F r i d a y, 6-8pm.

“When I was on national UK radio,” he said, “I got a phone call from the Spanish broadcasting company, Media Pro, who were TV provider for La Liga, the Spanish football league.

“I ended up being the worldwide, TV feed commentator for all the Real Madrid and Barcelona games.

“It was broadcast, in English, to over 100 countries. I covered David Beckham’s firstever match for Madrid, and got to meet him a few times. I was like a football fan being given the golden job!”

Once, in London, Paul had to interview Martha Reeves, who was in Caesar’s Palace, Las Vegas.

“In my earpiece, my producer was telling me that Martha didn’t have much time, and that we needed to get a move on,” he said.

“Stupidly, I can remember saying to him into the off-air microphone: ‘Look, who the hell is Martha Reeves now?

She hasn’t had a hit since the sixties. She’s a bit of a has-been, mate.

Calm down!’

“To my horror, I discovered that she was sitting with the headphones on, listening to our conversation. So that’s a big lesson - never say anything into the microphone, off air, that would bother you if it went on air!

“She wasn’t very happy, but we deflected the blame on to the second producer, who, we assured her, would face disciplinary action. She never did realise it was me!”

‘Goliath’ sees off Bluebell THERE was a real David v Goliath clash between league leaders Gaffers A and bottom team Bluebell A in Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League.

So far, the home side have gone unbeaten this season and started by taking the first frame.

But Bluebell A raised their game and stunned Gaffers A by taking the next four frames to open up a decent lead.

They couldn’t hold on to it, though, as the home side came back with four frames to match them and take a slender lead, only for Bluebell to level again.

With two frames remaining, Bluebell A were confident of taking some points, but the match slipped away from them as a relieved Gaffers A took those frames for the win.

The race for second place is still on and, for the time being, Phoenix Potters are still retaining the spot. They picked up another three points against Rewind A but were made to work hard for it in a close game.

Across the opening frames there was nothing to separate the teams and, after 10 games, it was still allsquare. The contest looked to be heading for a draw, but the Potters struck first to lead 6-5.

Rewind A were now playing for the draw, but

Elvis Dave was the devil in disguise, eventually rolling in the black to give Potters the slenderest of wins.

Also in the running for the runners-up spot are Palms A. who have a good record at the Terrace Bar, where they picked up another three points after Tuesday night’s visit to Amarilla Golf.

Some teams are often down to the bare bones at this time of the year, but not the Terrace Roosters. They had eight players on their roster, and they all played in the first two sets.

The pool was solid from the hosts, but the visitors took their chances well.

With JT uncharacteristically winning two matches, Palms were 6-2 up when the pizzas arrived.

The mid-evening munch didn’t affect the outcome as Palms eased home 8-4 with Chris and Simon in white hot form. That said, it was a pleasing display from the Roosters, who must feel they still need another win or two to be absolutely safe from relegation.

Dreamers A, who have had a good season so far, had a chance to move into the top five as they welcomed Gaffers B to Los Cristianos.

The first session was shared, frame-wise, Steve then beat Troy to put Dreamers A into the lead but Harry, Graham and then Richie took control, and it was advantage Gaffers B at 5-3.

Tommy got his team back in it, only for Gav to lose to Graham and the visitors were guaranteed a point.

Dreamers A had to show some steel and that’s exactly what Steve and Tom did by taking the last two frames for a point.

Rewind Rewired were looking to bounce back from a defeat with a home tie against out-of-sorts Treehouse A. And, despite some really close frames, the home side led 5-3. The visitors were staring at another defeat after being tipped as potential champions this season, but everything suddenly clicked into place as they fought their way back into the game.

They took the first two frames of the final session and it was allsquare and momentum was with them, Rewired dug deep but they couldn’t stem the tide and Treehouse A took all four final frames for a welcome win.

looking to hold their top-five spot with a home game against Terrace Bantams, who have been in decent form of late.

Frames were traded, but the visitors made the breakthrough and moved into a 5-3 lead.

This spurred Palms Elite into action and they fought back with three frames in a row against an off-form Bantams’ back end. It was now a final-frame battle between the two captains, Waggsy and Adi, the latter needing a win for a draw.

The frame started slowly but Adi was potting nicely. He got down to the black and left his opponent with a tricky, shot which he missed. And, with the black over the pocket, Adi rolled it in to make it honours even.

With the Division One title seemingly wrapped up by Gaffers A, Division Two is where all the excitement is, with three points separating the top four teams.

on to top spot, allowed their rivals to move closer after an away loss to Bluebell B. The side started well and moved into a 3-1 lead. but that was as good as it got for them. The home side hit back in some style and took all remaining eight frames for an excellent win, especially as they have two games in hand over their title rivals.

James Hammers C are now level on points at the top with Picasso’s A after a solid away win against The Crown. Hammers C raced into a 5-1 lead only for The Crown to get it back to 5-4.

James then beat Alex to ensure the draw for the away team, only for Macaroni to lose to Joel.

So it was 6-5 to the visitors, and Ken the Glove was on the table looking for the win. He is in fine form and continued it with his fifth win from six to take all three points for James Hammers C. Yates Bar, also in the title race, were at bottom club Treehouse B and it looked a straightforward night for them as they took a 5-0 lead. But the home team shocked them by taking the next five to

tie the contest. Yates Bar needed to regroup.

Captain Lee took to the table and managed a win against Dad to stop the rot, and they were able to breathe easy after Biggie beat Sean to grab a win for Yates Bar. Palms Rebels, pushing for a top-five finish in their first season, picked up three more points against Hoppys A. It was another close game and after the first two sessions the score was 4-4. Hoppys A struck first and they fancied their chances, but the home team came back at them, and, fuelled by Mark’s burgers, won the final frames and the match.

Exiles B, in action against Splash Bar, knew a win would take them above their opponents. And they came flying out of the traps to lead 4-0. They then continued as they started and it was soon 8-0 and over as a contest.

Splash Bar were now playing for pride, Craig managed to get a frame to avoid the whitewash, but Exiles B took the next two before Clive rescued a little pride for the away side. But it will be a match Splash Bar will want to forget!

Nadas held on Navidad!

Pas O Nadas entertained close rivals Scruffy Macs and a fierce Three Kings Night battle ensued, with neither team willing to let the other gain an advantage in the title

chase.

Richard and Andy fired maximums for Nadas, but then had to hold the trebles to square the match at four apiece. Rumours that Scruffys went home by camel are unfounded!

Up at the posh end of Abrigos, Phoenix Bar put in a fine performance to beat Spear Chuckers by the odd point, while fourth-placed The Pub put six past Exiles.

Aaron helps himself POW E R FU L opening quarters were the key to a 79-74 win for Iberostar Tenerife on Sunday, despite a strong comeback in the final two stages by Barcelona provincial hosts Manresa.

Tenerife won the first two sections 2719 and 24-14, which left Manresa too much to do. It was a pleasing win, especially

as recent American signing Taqwa Pinero had a fever and wasn’t able to play.

The squad pulled together well and had the outstanding player in Marius Grigonis, who racked up 14 points.

Aaron Doornekamp, also on top form with 15 points, was shaded by his team-mate’s allround contribution.

But Canadian Doornekamp continued his hot form with a 23-point haul as Tenerife continued their march through the Eu-

ropean League qualifying Group D. Ostend had inflicted a rare defeat on Tenerife on their own court. But this time, in La Laguna, Tenerife won 64-57 with Aaron Doornekamp leading the charge.

Off the hook, again!

IS it the fault of basic maths, or the lack of killer instinct?

Tenerife again failed to punish a team reduced to 10 men after a sending-off, this time at Nastic Tarragona.

After 11 minutes, a corner from Aaron beat everyone and the ball came to Cristo at the far post for a simple tap-in.

But, rather than push on, Tenerife had to thank keeper Dani Hernandez for a series of quality saves, especially a two-handed, pointblank block from a Manu effort.

And, wouldn’t you know it, Nastic levelled after 56 minutes when Jose Carlos turned leftback Camille inside out before launching a crisp shot into the corner of the visitors’ net.

The welcome mat was rolled out for Tenerife in the 62nd minute when Manu picked up a second booking and was off. But the charge failed to materialise.

Nastic were rockbottom of the Segunda Division, and had just changed managers, yet a full half-hour went unexploited by Tenerife, allowing the home side to gain an unexpected point.

There were three points available for Tenerife to help themselves, and they were given the perfect start.

Choco was sent on for Cristo, Omar replaced Aaron, and Jouini lumbered on for Raul Camara. But it simply wasn’t enough to ignite a winning assault, and the game fizzled out to a 1-1 draw.

And with the January transfer window slipping away, Tenerife need to boost the squad if they want to dent the promotion play-off places.

Well worth the wait EGATESA Granadilla Tenerife super-fan Emiliana has learned, in her 100 years, that patience is a virtue. And her beloved team had to show the same quality before turning their superiority into a 1-0 home win over Santa Teresa.

good opening down the left before squaring the ball to Ana, whose shot was off target.

Silvia Doblado could have added to the advantage soon after, but her header drew a confident save from Emmeline. And the keeper was alert again to punch clear a Virgy Garcia chance.

Cup woe for Marino Sir Elton’s CD Marino 1 UD Los Llanos 2 tribute for Watford’s Graham

EVERYONE likes a cup run, and while it’s hardly the FA variety, the Copa Heliodoro is much-prized among Canarian teams and would give CD Marino a chance to lift a gleaming trophy at the grand Heliodoro Stadium in Santa Cruz.

Sadly a poor performance against UD Los Llanos of La Palma ended with a 2-1 home defeat against a side from the Preferente, a tier below their hosts, leaving them a mountain to climb in the away leg.

The midweek, mid-afternoon kick-off meant there was a sparse crowd, and a few regular players missing for CD Marino, but Los Llanos looked nervous in the opening exchanges.

Fran Alonso had an early pop at keeper Adan, who just about gathered.

Then the keeper strayed off his line and Alberto took the ball past him, but Kevin Castro couldn’t apply the finishing touch.

Then came the surprise opener after 10 minutes.

MASTER cyclist Chris Froome has revealed that he turned down the use of a therapeutic use exemption (TUE) during the second of his three Tour de France wins.

The Team Sky rider, who admits to receiving TUEs twice during his career, rejected medical help during the last week of his 2015 Tour success.

The 31-year-old clung on to win a second yellow jersey by 1min 12secs from Colombian rival Nairo Quintana, who finished the stronger of the two on the testing Alpe d’Huez climb during the penultimate stage.

Froome said he had been struggling with an unspecified ailment, but did not accept any assistance.

“I didn’t feel having a TUE in the last week of the Tour was something I was prepared to

unlocked the home defence and buried the ball past Marko between the posts.

That instilled confidence in the visitors, and Diego made another lightning break only to be hauled back by a harsh offside call from the ref.

Brad Mills pushed up from right-back for Marino and cut inside before being crowded out.

Facu Valiente showed great control to bring down a high crossball but couldn´t get in a clear shot on the Llanos net.

Rafael was coming into the game more for the La Palma side and his hard work won him a good

shooting chance, but not quite good enough.

Marino were drifting into a high-ball game instead of passing their way up the field, and when they did get a sight of goal, they tended to rush their shots.

There was another blow just before the break when that man Diego again used his pace to get down the right wing and around home defender Edgar. he had only a narrow shooting angle, but still squeezed the ball into the Marino net.

That left Marino with a big second-half workload. Fran Alonso tried a low shot, which the keeper grabbed, and Brad Mills came inside to carve an opening, unleashing a shot that just cleared the bar.

New blood was needed, and home coach Toni Dumpierrez made three substitutions, Delgado, Colly, and Amed, who breathed some life into the Marino cause. Coly added his power in the air and, within minutes, had risen to get a strong header close to goal.

Saul was flattened when through on goal and the ref awarded a Marino penalty, which he converted with ease.

There was no suggestion that either Froome, Wiggins or Team Sky had broken any rules.

Froome, who generally trains in the North of Tenerife in his buildup to the racing season,

minutes left and Marino pressed forward to level.

But their finishing let them down and keeper Jose Adan found his best form to deny their better efforts.

Kevin Castro had a couple of chances denied and Coly thought he had scored, but the keeper clawed the ball to his chest just in time.

Fran Delgado had to clear a dangerous raid from Llanos, and Marko got a reprieve when a free-kick beat him, only for the goal to be denied by the ref.

Amed had two late misses as Los Llanos screamed for the final whistle, and their joy when the ref did blow showed how much the cup win meant to them.

There is still an away leg to come on January 25th, but it will take a big Marino effort to force a place in the cup semifinals.

The cup defeat completed a double victory for the island of La Palma. Last weekend, Marino lost 1-0 at one of the other island sides, Tenisca, in a league game.

On Sunday it’s back to home league action with Telde the visitors for a noon kick-off at CD Marino.

And he has reiterated his desire for the World Anti-Doping Agency to clamp down on their use.

“The fact that we’re having that debate about authenticity means there’s a problem with the system,” he told the BBC. “I think WADA need to tighten their regulations around TUEs, so they’re not something that we question, like their legitimacy.

“It’s not good for sport in general. The fact that we’re discussing the validity of results, that brings it back to the authorities, is something they need to tighten up on so that there aren’t questions being asked any more.”

GRAHAM Taylor, the former England, Watford and Aston Villa manager, died yesterday (Thursday) of a suspected heart attack at the age of 72.

A family statement said: “With the greatest sadness, we have to announce that Graham passed away at his home early this morning. The family are devastated by this sudden and totally unexpected loss.”

He leaves a wife, Rita, and daughters Joanne and Karen.

And Sir Elton John, who owned Watford and appointed him manager to great effect in 1977, paid an emotional tribute to him on Instagram, saying: “I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear about Graham’s passing.

“He was like a brother to me. We shared an unbreakable bond since we first met. We went on an incredible journey together and it will stay with me forever.

“He took my beloved Watford from the depths of the lower leagues to unchartered territory and into Europe. We have become a leading English club because of his managerial wisdom and genius.

“This is a sad and dark day for Watford. The club and the town. We will cherish Graham and drown our sorrows in the many brilliant memories he gave us. I love you Graham. I will miss you very much.

“My thoughts go out to Rita, Joanne, Karen and the whole Taylor family.”

Taylor was born in

Nottinghamshire on 15th September, 1944, and developed a love for football through his father, a sports journalist for the Scunthorpe Evening Telegraph.

After beginning his managerial career at Lincoln, Taylor was recruited by Elton in 1977.

Taylor hit the headlines by taking the club on an extraordinary rise from Division Four into Division One (then called the top tier of English football), in a 10-year reign, before taking over at Aston Villa in Division Two. From there, he took them back into the First Division at the first time of asking, and finished a runner-up before becoming England boss in 1990.

He guided England to the 1992 European Championship in Sweden, but the team were eliminated at the group stage.

Taylor resigned in 1993 after England failed to qualify for the 1994 World Cup in the US. The Football Association said on Twitter: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former England manager Graham Taylor.”

After England, he had a brief spell at Wolves before going back to Watford in 1996.

He got them into the Premier League in 1999, but, after their relegation and struggles in the second tier, he retired in 2001.

Retirement was ended temporarily in 2002 when he stepped in for a brief spell back at Villa until 2003.
