CRASH-HIT ATHLETES ‘LUCKY TO BE ALIVE’
OLYMPIC runners James Ellington and Nigel Levine may have had their careers shortened following a head-on motorbike accident while on a warmweather training camp in Las Americas. Ellington, who received the worst injuries, said they were lucky to be alive. Continued on Page 3

Career-ending crash? Continued from Front
Both are recovering in hospital after the terrifying collision. It is believed that Ellington had a broken leg and pelvis, and he has undergone surgery.
But the 100m sprinter managed to send an Instagram message, thanking his fans for their concern and vowing to get back to the sport he loves. “Overwhelmed and truly touched by everyone’s messages and support,” he wrote. “I truly am blessed as I do not know how me or my training partner Nigel are still alive. Me and him are both strong characters and will be looking to bounce back from this horrific accident.” Levine, though damaging his pelvis, may have sustained less-serious injuries. The former European junior champion, who was in the 4x400m team in Rio, has won eight World and European relay medals, including gold at the 2014 European Championships. Ellington’s haul includes a relay silver in the 2014 Commonwealth Games and 4x100m gold in the 2014 and 2016 European Championships.
The GB Athletics captain Martyn Rooney, who is also at the training camp, said. “Regretfully, we can confirm that James Ellington and Nigel Levine have sustained injuries following a road accident in Tenerife on Tuesday evening. Both athletes are receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable.” The pair, who are recovering in hospital, were rounding a bend on a motorbike on TF-28 in Guia de Isora when they were struck by a car, reportedly being driven the wrong way around a sharp corner on Tuesday evening at 7.26pm. It followed a training session at the Antonio Domínguez Alfonso Olympic Stadium, adjacent to the Green Hospital in Playa de Las Americas. They had been enjoying a British Athletics warmweather training camp alongside fellow sprinters Rooney and Rabah Yousif. Both competed at the 2016 Rio Games last summer, but, sadly, the chances of Ellington returning to topclass athletics seem slim. It would be a devastating blow to the European champion, who has established himself as a mainstay of Great Britain’s 4x100m team in recent years. He helped Britain win 4x100m
gold in the 2014 and 2016 European Championships, and relay silver in the 2014 Commonwealth Games, and has a 100m personal best of 10.11sec.
Top British sprinter Adam Gemili tweeted his support for both men on Wednesday. And a British Athletics spokesman said: “Regretfully,
we can confirm that they have sustained injuries following a road accident in Tenerife. “Both athletes are receiving medical treatment and are conscious and stable. British Athletics medical staff are with the athletes and liaising with hospital staff over their treatment.” Team GB athletes are regular visitors to Tenerife, and each summer the Antonio Dominguez stadium hosts the Arona Combined Events, featuring an international field. And they always include a few British athletes, sharpening up their training programme.
Musical Army’s donation of food
Another flu bug strikes Canaries A SECOND flu epidemic has hit the Canaries this winter, which is an unusual occurrence. In fact, the last time it happened was a decade ago. Public Health considers that an epidemic amounts to 120 cases per 100,000 habitants, and last week this threshold was exceeded - by four people! The new epidemic, caused mostly by influenza A, has been aggravated by another
calima, and it has over-run the emergency services, especially in the Canarian University Hospital. According to health workers’ unions, the number of flu victims has intensified in the last few days, forcing them to leave patients in the corridors because there are no rooms available. The situation has affected Tenerife, La Palma and Gran Canaria.
THE local Army brigade delivered 500kg of products, comprising dry goods, personal hygiene items, etc, to Adeje Council on Wednesday.
The donation was made possible through funds raised by the Army band’s annual Christmas Concert on 17th December, held for the second successive year in the Magma Centre. The goods will be stored
in Adeje’s Food Bank and given to the borough’s families in need. The donation was passed over to Councillors Isabel Fernández González and Adolfo Alonso Ferrera by Commandant José Ignacio García Salamanca.

Goalkeeper Zunino calls it a day at 82!
VETERAN goalkeeper Tano Zunino hung up his boots last Saturday… at the grand old age of 82, after a career spanning 70 years.
And the whole world seemed to know about it because the incredible story, given to a Spanish newspaper and picked up by many others in Spain and the Canaries, was also seen on at least 22,000 Google web pages, featuring sites that included radio, Eurosport TV, many Italian newspapers. He also figured in countries such as Argentina (where Tano was born and still lives), Venezuela, the US, Honduras, Colombia, Peru, Chile, and Ecuador. Tano always kept goal for Tango Football Club amateurs whenever he visited his two sons every year in Tenerife (from 1991). And he faced opponents Rommel Fernández for much of the first half at Guargacho stadium in a
farewell tribute match before his final bow. He was eventually replaced by regular keeper Fernando Raúl Bianchini, also Tango’s manager, who was the heart of Saturday’s memorable
Mystery death of man in El Salto THE body of an British man, found on Monday at a Granadilla finca in El Salto with his throat apparently slit, has been identified as 63-yearold Harry French, from Coventry.
He had been looking after the farm while the owner was on holiday, and was living in a barn there. But, despite one police officer’s suggestion, Mr French was not murdered. A coroner ruled that he had died of natural causes, and that his body had been mauled by animals, which turned out to be rats. The dead man, who lived in the area, had been in Tenerife for 25 years and was discovered by a neighbour, who sounded the alert. No fewer than five police cars arrived at the scene, the officers cordoning off the farm awaiting the coroner.

blew the whistle to start the match. Collina now sits on the UEFA Referees’ Committee, and Tano said: “I could not believe it. I thought he was a double and it’s incredible. Even when I look at the photos, I still can’t believe it.” Such is his new-found fame that Tano even featured briefly at the end of Monday’s popular Canal+ programme “El Día Después” (The Day After). And not many 82-year-old sportsmen can say that!
Granadilla Port’s right on schedule C O N STRU C T I O N work on the new Granadilla Port is on schedule to meet the deadline, and will open on time this summer, according to Santa Cruz Port Authority President Ricardo Melchior.
He pointed out that cause of death could have been accidental because the neck wound was compatible with an animal feeding on the body. The strange thing about the scene for the investigators was the total absence of blood, but it gave the onsite coroner a clue about the animals, and the real reason for the man’s death. A family friend said: “Harry was a real character, known to everyone in the area.”
Gimnasia y Esgrima, of Mercedes, Buenos Aires. And, in 1960, he helped them reach the First Division (equivalent to Spain’s Third Division), for professional teams. Work on the south port will be finished in March for a June opening, as planned, with the rest being finished during the year. Melchior said: “With the southern port operational, a new line of business will be activated, which will be an important boost to the Canary Islands economy.” It has taken 10 years to get to this point because the project, costing almost 115m euros, has faced much opposition from environmental groups.

Disabled kids’ parents handed school lifeline ANGRY parents of the 30 disabled students attending Guargacho’s Special Needs Education Centre have denounced the facilities.
With two classrooms in the cultural centre, another two in the old school, and a prefab classroom built in 2015, the facilities also have a patio that simply isn’t large enough. “Our children are people, not animals,” said one mother. And the range of complaints goes beyond the facilities’ deficiencies. The dining room is in a hallway, which cannot hold all the students, so some eat in the classroom. And not every parent can afford to pay the necessary 80 euros a month for meals. And more activities are needed for the children, like sensory-stimulation such as music therapy.
But their complaints have been overshadowed somewhat by Ana Dorta, General Director for Education Infrastructure, who this week confirmed that her department seeks land in the South to build a new school. “We are taking every possible action to
obtain land that can accommodate a SpecialNeeds facility”, she said, though admitting the project would take some time. That’s because, mainly, it depends on the co-operation of local councils and the land’s classification, which needs to be for educational use.
Carnival Queen hopefuls
A TOTAL of 47 candidates will take part in this year’s three Carnival Queen Elections next month, for Adults, Juniors and Seniors as usual.
There are 16 candidates for Carnival Queen, the election taking place on 22nd February at 9.30. Twenty aspiring girls will vie for the role of Junior Carnival Queen, on 12th February at 6pm. And 11 candidates for the Senior Carnival Queen contest will battle it out on 15th
February at 5.30pm, all at the Recinto Ferial in Santa Cruz. All the aspiring candidates will take part in the Carnival’s opening ceremony at 9.30pm next Friday (27th Jan) in the Parque Marítimo, before the show begins for real!
Charity organisations, such as Helping Hands, have stepped in to help the school, in the absence of the Canarian Government, with an electric sun-blind to cover the patio area, money for sensorystimulation toys and tablets for the children. In addition, the charity has also purchased lots
of disabled equipment for the Centre, and takes the children horse-riding. But the parents, fedup with waiting for official intervention, are ready to take this case before the Prosecutor’s Office, stating that it violates disability rights and social inclusion. “If we don’t get a
solution this year, we will take the children to the Ministry doors,” said one irate parent. Rue, the Ministry of Education already has the basic project in place for the new installation, but has not yet chosen where it will be built. Dorta acknowledges that funds were not allocated in the 2017 budget for this purpose. But she is committed to giving “the maximum priority to any extraordinary funds that come into the Ministry during this year”. The Canarian Government’s preferences to where the centre should be range from San Miguel de Abona, where the centre is now located, to Arona. And since it is a regional centre, open to children based in nine municipalities, from Fasnia to Santiango del Teide, they consider that the centre should be located centrally in the south.

Costa Adeje offers the tourist ‘so much more’ COSTA Adeje has been presenting its main tourism strategies for this year during FITUR, the international Spanish Tourism Trade Fair currently taking place in Madrid.
Adeje Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga and Tourism Councillor Ermitas Moreira García have been explaining the new offers being promoted by the destination from its stand, again being shared by Arona Council. They have also stressed the recent data, proving its excellent economic state, and how it is maintaining its position as one of the best locations in Spain in terms of hotel/hotel-apartment occupation and tourism excellence. The FITUR event, which began on Wednesday, continues until Sunday evening, and, as for the shared stand, Mayor Fraga said: “We will have our own individual presence alongside Arona. After all, we are the two big destinations in Tenerife.” The two boroughs have also been working together on joint offers, as they did last year, too, and Mayor Fraga said: “this level of coordination with Arona is very important. “Geographically, we are united, and the effect on the tourist is the same. We need to work together to gain the loyalty of our visitors and
compete against other destinations.” But for Rodríguez Fraga, the individual stand doesn’t, in any way, suggest a departure from the overall promotions for Spain, the Canary Island and Spain. During the Trade Fair, Adeje representatives will also have been taking part in the Cabildo’s Tenerife Tourism events and meetings. “We are all under the same umbrella,” added the Mayor. “Each destination has the right to promote its own initiatives, and to highlight the things that make the destination different and special.” Costa Adeje is also recognised as a good investment
destination, renovating and improving its tourism infrastructures constantly, encouraging innovation and adapting to the changing needs and wants of the visitor. “We have made important changes to public infrastructures and taken on private plans to improve the quality of the destination,” said Moreira. “There is a high level of investment, which has been very important in improvements to Costa Adeje, helping us to move in the right direction to consolidate a five-star destination.” Adeje’s Tourism Minister added: “Tourists seek
more experiences, beyond enjoying their hotel,” giving, as an example, the greater use of hiking trails and outdoor sports. “In Costa Adeje, we fulfil your dreams, naturally.” This phrase, the slogan used
in the promotional video presented at FITUR this week, is a statement of intent. Beyond sun and beach tourism, the municipality wants to strengthen its offer of nature, heritage and culture.
Carnival’s global reach SANTA Cruz City Council has been promoting its forthcoming, 2017 Tenerife Carnival at FITUR, the impressive global tourism exhibition in Madrid, which ends on Sunday.
The Council, striving to get its message through to national and international tour operators, is also keen for the Carnival to be considered a World Heritage site. The City Council has,
in fact, started to market the event by publishing an informative brochure addressed to national and international tour operators, which includes the main Carnival dates. It also shows which products and what acts tourists and visitors can attend. Some 3,000 copies of the brochure will have been distributed among professionals attending the exhibition by Sunday, with the aim of attracting the main tour operators to Tenerife.

A brave new world? SO, today is the day the free world officially gets a new leader, as the 45th President of the United States gets inaugurated and is given the keys to the White House. As we wave goodbye to the Obama administration, following what were emotional and heartfelt goodbyes and tributes to his family, we welcome a 70-year-old businessman and TV personality … but who is he? Donald John Trump was born and raised in Queens, New York City, and received an economics degree from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1968. In 1971, he took charge of his family’s real estate and construction firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son, which was later renamed The Trump Organization. During his business career, Trump has built, renovated, and managed numerous office towers, hotels, casinos, and golf courses. He owned the Miss USA and Miss Universe pageants from 1996 to 2015, and has lent the use of his name in the branding of various products. And from 2004 to 2015, he hosted The Apprentice USA. As of 2016, Forbes listed him as the 324th wealthiest person in the world (113th in the United States), with a net worth of $4.5bn. Trump will become the oldest and wealthiest person to assume the presidency, and the first without prior military or governmental service.
But he faces his toughest test yet, by proving to the American people that he can lead them forward and “Make America Great Again”. A lot of this is down to some of his “radical” policies, which the public have bought into, but which analysts and other politicians say are financially or logistically impossible. Such as: *Allowing states to legalise marijuana if they chose to do so *Legalising drugs to take profit away from drug cartels *Closing parts of the Internet to prevent ISIS from attracting recruits *Establishing new screening procedures and enforcing our immigration laws to keep terrorists out of the United States *Building a wall along the Mexican border *Deporting all illegal immigrants *Enhanced penalties for overstaying a visa. *Halting Muslim immigration temporarily, as long as the ISIS threat persists *Forcing China to uphold intellectual property laws, and placing a 45% tariff on Chinese exports to the US There are, of course, many policies which do make sense, but it is these closed-door, nononsense policies for which the American people have voted. But whether or not he can deliver, only time will tell. A New World - possibly! Brave - I’m not so sure! Chris

Stiff sentence! A MAFIA boss and renowned drugs baron, infamously-known for his permanent erection, has been sentenced to 21 years behind bars having spent years on the run.
Drug lord Francesco Castriotta 42, a notorious cocaine drug lord, scarpered while awaiting trial in Italy in 2009. His painful “priapism” condition, which Castriotta blamed on years of cocaine use, convinced a female
judge at the time not to remand him in jail, and instead, she placed him under house arrest. To persuade her how uncomfortable he felt, a tearful Castriotta had
clutched a bag of ice to his groin and moaned about his discomfort. But he then went on the run. Now, seven years later, authorities
have tracked down the fugitive mobster, thanks to Christmas cards and phone calls from his family, which betrayed his whereabouts in El Bendrell, Spain, where he was arrested. He was detained by Spanish officers after being trialled by Italian courts in his absence, which resulted in the 21-year sentence. Officers believe he had been supplying cocaine to dealers in Milan, via his Catalan home. One joked: “He can expect a stiff penalty when he returns to Italy.”
Snowbound Spain is no place for holidays TOURISTS flying to Spain this week for some sunshine were left disappointed when they found themselves in the heaviest snowfall there for 35 years.
Beaches at numerous coastal resorts were wiped out by freak snow-storms, with roads cut off because of the ensuing chaos caused by bewildered motorists. Schools on the Costa Blanca were closed
because of heavy, overnight snow, and even Mallorca awoke to a white blanket. The only benefit to tourists was that they could enjoy what was probably once-in-alifetime snowball fights on the beaches. With light snow falling in Yunquera and Nerja as well as light hail in Malaga centre, temperatures were expected to go as low as three degrees in parts of southern Spain. Further inland, the barometer fell below zero, with more snow forecast. And strong
winds of up to 90kmph, coming from the sea, produced waves of between one and two metres high. And if people felt cold at sea level, they would have fared far worse in the frosty, mountain areas, where temperatures reached as low as minus 10 degrees.
It’s the first time Denia, in Alicante, has had snow since 1983, while areas of southern Valencia and northern Alicante saw up to 25cm of snow in 24 hours. The snow was expected to last until today (Friday). But don’t bank on the sun returning because it will give way to rain instead.
Licence cyclists for road safety? THE Royal Automobile Club of Spain (RACE) is proposing that all cyclists should have a licence before using the roads. A points system for the licence, compulsory insurance and even a licence plate, are part of its agenda. Right now, cyclists share almost identical rights as pedestrians, except that they are obligated to pedal on roads only. “We are not against cyclists,” insisted a RACE spokesperson. “We want all roadusers to be safe, and what we are proposing
is that they follow the same rules and have the same rights.” A bicycle licence would cost about 70 euros, plus the cost of insuring a bike, and the necessary paperwork to get a licence plate. Manuel Martin, head of cycling pressure group ConBici, said: “It is “absolutely ridiculous that RACE has made a proposal that would not be implemented anywhere else in the world.” Bringing in such measures, added, “would stop almost everyone from riding a bike”.

An underwater museum? Just take a deep breath! A SPECTACULAR underwater museum has opened, off the coast of Lanzarote, and is the first of its kind in Europe.
The Museo Atlantico has been put together, bit by bit, by British eco-artist Jason deCaires Taylor. It is 14 metres below the surface and features dozens of humanoid sculptures, based on real people. And, as you would expect, it has an eerie appearance, and only
scuba divers and snorkellers are able to view it. The museum, which opened last week, is situated in Coloradas Bay, on the south coast of the island. It contains more than 300 sculptures and a special habitat for native marine life. There is also an underwater garden, cactus-human hybrid sculptures, and groups of “people”, using their phones or taking selfies. Taylor, who spent more than two years on the project, conceived it as a triple statement, regarding climate change, the
human condition, and our relationship with nature. He is also the brains behind an underwater sculpture park in the Caribbean, hailed by the National Geographic Magazine as one of the greatest wonders of the world.
More time is required to charge for abuse SAVE The Children in Spain charity wants the law to be given more time to charge abusers, following last week’s story about a 5% increase in child-sex offences to around 3,930 in 2015, against the previous year. The charity believes the set period after which charges cannot be bought should be raised to the age of 30, from the current limit of 18. The change would at least give them more time to understand the full extent of their abuse and, hopefully, denounce the attackers. “More cases of children’s sexual abuse come to light, but this crime is still a taboo,” said Andrés Conde, director of Save the Children in Spain. “Violence against children is a hidden problem, and the numbers of complaints are just the tip of the iceberg. “But we lack mechanisms to allow children to denounce, and it means that many cases go unknown and go unpunished.” The current age-limit of 18 means that victims have between five and 15 years only to report the crime, depending on its severity.

Animals blessed by San Antonio
By Colin Kirby
GOATS were giddy with excitement, oxen were anxious with anticipation, and donkeys were chomping at the bit.
Sunday was the big parade day for the San Antonio Abad romeria, in the heart of Arona old town. Balconies were draped with flags and garlands, and
the statue of San Antonio stood proud before the church altar. It was going to be difficult to live up to such dedicated preparation, but, of course, the organisers surpassed all expectations. In the church plaza, final touches were being put to the white-and-red outfits of the main folklore group. Out towards the football ground, the big beasts were being joined by wooden yokes
Chamber maids set for early retirement THE Cabildo and Hotels Association are working together to enable professional chamber-maids to claim early retirement from the age of 58.
The scheme will be available to those who have contributed to social security for 33-35 years. And forecasts by hotel managements suggest that more than 150 Tenerife professionals could sign up for this proposal in the next five years. According to Ashotel reports, 90% of the union view the proposal as positive. It is one of the points included in the “well-being” programme for housekeeping, presented this week by
Ashotel and the Cabildo. It follows the results of a survey, conducted by the Edei Consultores company, among 206 workers from 36 Tenerife hotels and apartments. The findings reveal a “positive perception of the working environment” among respondents, although they also indicate which aspects generate the greatest disagreements. These include the perceived salary (they demand, above all, more incentives for working longer hours) and the performanceevaluation system, as well as professional development possibilities. The workers also claim there is a lack of opportunities to occupy more qualified positions in companies.
and hitched up to carts. There was a slight chill in the air, but the buzz of activity was all-consuming. San Antonio is a patron saint of animals, and, as they play such a key part in rural life, there is no shortage of people of all ages, eager to pay homage to the hardworking creatures. The animals definitely sensed that this was their big stage, the constant tinkle of goats’ bells tweaking ears. It was strange to see shepherds rounding them up in an adjoining field, stopping only to liaise with their colleagues on their mobiles: ancient meets modern! Once loaded-up, the carts rolled slowly down to the church square, completing a circuit around the town’s hub. There were plenty of viewing points along the ropedoff areas, although nifty footwork was needed at some points, thanks to the excited animals. As all this unfolded, the central area of the plaza was doing a roaring trade in snacks, wine and mojitos. There is always a good mix of local Canarians, tourists, and ex-pats, encouraged by free buses from the southern tourist zone, thanks to Arona Council. Following the carts around the streets was a popular calling, helped by the constant handing-down of bananas, tomatoes, eggs, bread, and, of course, generous quantities of local wine.
As the procession parked up in side-streets, and the occupants swelled the crowds, dancing and singing broke out to the tunes of traditional guitars, Canarian timple-plucking, and soaring voices. The San Antonio statue was perched on the edge of the plaza, while below, in the street, a priest was blessing domestic pets on a special
day in honour of all animals. Most of the cats and dogs offered up took the anointing in their stride, but a few were less than impressed with the sprinkling of holy water over them. While on the blessings, a big thumbs-up for the organisation and those free buses, the demand of which exceeded the frequency. Photos. Sir Old Golfer

Valentin’s art is Moroccan is said on another level to back terrorism A MOROCCAN man was arrested on Tuesday for an alleged terrorism offence in San Juan, Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, where he lives in a rented apartment with his wife and two young children on Social Service benefits.
Police say the 30-yearold detainee “used an account under a pseudonym in a wellknown social network to spread propagandistic material of various
jihadist groups, supporting both ideology and terrorist acts”. The spokesman added: “Once we analysis the electronic devices used by the detainee to access and publish on social networks, it will enable investigators
to determine whether it is a case of selfradicalisation, or whether he had contacts with a larger structure.” It is the second arrest in the fight against Islamist terrorism in Gran Canarias following one in November.
Romanian gang beggars belief! GRAN Canaria’s National Police have cracked a five-man gang of Romanians, suspected of human trafficking and exploiting beggars.
FROM Icod de Los Vinos to Los Cristianos, Tenerife sculptor and artist Valentin Diaz Lemus is the latest local talent to take advantage of Los Cristianos Cultural Centre to display his works.
The building, on the beach-side of the Valdes Centre, is often seen as a source of information and bookings for the Auditorio Infanta Leonor, which backs on to it. But it also features regular painting exhibitions on the ground floor, and more forms of art upstairs on the first floor. The Valentin sculptures and paintings catch the
eye as you emerge from the short, upward walk, and the metallic models and vibrant acrylic paintings all feature the human body. Valentin has shown his work all over Spain and, down South from his Icod base, it has found a new audience. Recently Valentin won
a design competition for the Marbella Carnival poster. You have until 3rd February to enjoy the new, creative spread. Hopefully, it will show more people that the Cultural Centre is about much more than Council forms and signing-up for courses.
The gang were said to have forced them into a work schedule, delivering the daily collection to their “controllers”. One victim was captured in Romania as a minor, enticed by a young man pretending to be her boyfriend to gain her trust.
He seized all her personal documents and forced the victim into prostitution, controlling her day and night. He also prevented her from communicating with her family, threatening her continually and assaulting her physically.

NEWS IN BRIEF Cyclist badly hurt
A CYCLIST aged 58 was badly injured in San Miguel on Monday, with head and chest trauma, after appearing to switch to the wrong side of the road.
The Irishman, who was cycling down the El Fronton road, collided head-on with a Renault Traffic car. He was trapped under the vehicle and had to be rescued by Las Chafiras firefighters, before being air-lifted by helicopter to Candelaria hospital.
Parrots head for schools
SANTA Cruz is inundated with Kramer parrots, which is why the City Council is planning to use some for environmental education programmes.
In 2015, the Spanish Ornithological Society reported a total of 370 parrots. But the numbers have since grown because of the favourable breeding conditions that exist on the Island, plus the good climate and an absence of predators. Now, the City Council is setting up traps to catch as many as possible, specifically for educational purposes.
Two more drownings
THE list of drownings already this year in the Canaries continues to grow. An 86-year-old Belgium man died on El Camison beach, Los Cristianos, after being rescued from the sea in cardiac arrest. Lifeguards and paramedics were unable to resuscitate him. And another man died at Lanzarote’s La Canteria Beach, despite the Local Police and Civil Protection performing Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) on him. Helicopter paramedics, who landed on the beach, also failed to revive him.
Man and son rescued
A MAN and his three-year-old son were found, early on Sunday on the Masca Barranco, by the Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue Unit. They had been hiking with a group of tourists on Saturday afternoon when the father decided to continue the hike with his son on their own. They were reported missing at 3am and were found, down the Barranco, four hours later. Police provided blankets and water and evacuated them by boat.
Bullying at school
GUARDIA Civil officers are investigating a possible case of bullying following an attempted suicide by a Fuerteventura minor last weekend. The parents found her in her bedroom, showing symptoms of suffocation. The girl led officers to believe she was being bullied at school, and the case was passed to a special Guardia Civil unit, which deals with school-harassment cases. It is now conducting an investigation at the school. The youngster, still believed to be in hospital, is making good progress.
NATO hand-over
AFTER a year in charge, Spain has handed over command of NATO’s Response Force to the UK for 2017 at Britain’s Gloucester headquarters. The multi-national force comprises air, land and sea troops, ready to deploy at short notice to defend against crises such as terrorist attack, war or natural disaster. It was formed in 2002 and is a supreme, technologicallyadvanced team, led by a different NATO country each year.
Balcony-fall woman
A WOMAN was injured after falling from her balcony accidentally on to the one below her.
It happened in Los Ángeles street, Santiago del Teide, at 6pm on Monday, when emergency services were notified. The 28-year-old woman suffered minor injuries to her legs and was taken by ambulance to Hospiten Sur.

Spain still trying to dig its way out of financial mire THERE is good news and bad concerning Spain’s 2017 budget because, although it will meet EU requisites “in general terms”, a European Commission assessment also notes that the country will overshoot its deficit target by one-fifth of a percentage point.
You couldn’t possibly envisage such a tiny fraction affecting the country much. Yet in real terms, it adds up to a huge 2.1bn-euro deficit in excessive expenditure. And the EC warns the Spanish Government to “be ready to approve additional measures”. Spain has already tweaked its fiscal policy by approving tax hikes, but even this will probably not be enough to bring the deficit down to the 3.1% target, reveals the study. Instead, it will be closer to 3.3%, representing
that 2.1bn-euro excess. If so, it will be the sixth time in six years that the Mariano Rajoy administration has failed to meet its EU targets. And, even more distressing for Rajoy and Co, the Commission believes Spain will miss its goals again next year, when the deficit is expected to be 2.8% of GDP instead of the agreed 2.2%. Based on these estimates, the Commission is asking the Spanish Government to “be ready to take additional measures if the deviations entail a greater risk of failing to meet targets”. In other words, if the Commission’s forecast is correct, Rajoy will be forced to introduce further budget cuts, or raise taxes, to balance the accounts. Brussels is forecasting GDP growth of 2.3% in 2017, in line with IMF predictions, while Madrid is offering a more optimistic 2.5%. This one-fifth of a point can make all the difference between meeting deficit targets or
missing them again. And that’s just one year since Spain averted sanctions for its constant, narrow overshooting. Even though one of Rajoy’s campaign promises, made in the Financial Times, was not to raise taxes, the first budget of his second term in office is pointing the other way. Spain had been told to make “structural” adjustments, which are those that are independent of the economic cycle at a given moment, and represent 0.5% of GDP (around 5.5bn euros). To do so, Madrid is planning hikes on corporate tax, alcohol, tobacco, sugary drinks and emissions. And if further measures are still required, the chances are that fuel prices will be next in line. Brussels is also concerned about Rajoy’s ability to reach congressional deals on budget issues. That’s because he heads a minority government and faces an opposition, which is openlyhostile to further cuts.
From dinner-lady to head of school! ROSALIND Brotherton, a single mother, has almost certainly created history by transforming herself from school dinner lady to headmistress in nine glorious years. Her remarkable journey began when her marriage broke down, which inspired her to get on with her life by studying for a degree while bringing up three sons, Alexander, George and Sebastian, now in their twenties. “I was juggling jobs, working as a dinner lady and a learning assistant at a school, said the 49-year-old. “I was working with children and that inspired me to become a teacher. “My marriage ended when I was 30, and I wanted to help provide for my children and to do something for myself. So I started doing my degree at the Open University. While serving up food in the school canteen, Rosalind studied for a History degree and graduated in 2005 after five years. And she finally gained her teaching qualification before, as a trainee teacher, she rejoined Swan Lane First School in Evesham, Worcs, where she used to work. She then joined Thomas Jolysse School
in Stratford, rising rapidly to become assistant headteacher. And her astonishing journey to the top was complete when she was appointed headteacher at Worcester’s Flyford Flavell First School in September last year, some nine years after qualifying. Rosalind said her own struggles made her realise how important it was for children to get a good start in life. And now she has the perfect opportunity to put that into practice. “It really surprised me
because, when I started the journey, I was never careerminded,” she said. “But I was working in school and I wanted to be able to affect change. The higher I went, the more I felt I could make things better for children … sort things out, or influence more.” But Rosalind admitted: “I didn’t have a very good education. I didn’t enjoy school. I came from a singleparent family and all this came together. There weren’t many opportunities for me when I left school at 16 with a few CSEs. But I believe that background has helped me make sure that children love learning and enjoy learning.” Two years ago inspectors Ofsted said her school, which caters for 79 pupils aged between five and nine, “needs improvement”. Today, thanks to her influence, it is rated “good”. The unassuming mum said: “I understand the stresses and strains of each particular role. When you are a dinner lady, you are seeing the children at a social time when they need to let off steam. “Yes, there are obviously more stresses and strains as a headteacher, but it’s just as enjoyable.”

Illegal-gun gang is smashed by police SPANISH National Police have dismantled a gang selling illegal weapons, some of which are “capable of shooting down aircraft”, and worth around 20m euros in all.
The police, who searched six properties, collected over 8,000 weapons ready for sale on the black market, in collaboration with various Intelligence Brigades in Spain. On top of this haul, they also seized 29 machine guns, various pistols and handguns, several anti-aircraft cannons, ammunition of various calibres and 80,000 euros in cash. The police action stems from investigations
carried out by the Intelligence Corps (CNI) to wipe out the sale of decommissioned firearms and military weapons, deemed illegal. And so far, five Spanish people have been held, four men and a woman, who formed part of a gang, engaged in the legal purchase of decommissioned military weapons. Subsequently, they renovated the arms and put them up for sale on the black market. They needed to buy the weapons through legally-estab-

Nicky Jam set to be toast of Santa Cruz
ANOTHER week, another concert for Tenerife. Nicky Jam will be bringing his popular blend of reggaeton and Latino dance music to Santa Cruz on 8th April, on the port quayside. Nicky was born in the US, but his musical influences stem from his Costa Rican father and Dominican mother. Three years ago, he
performed to a small crowd at Adeje’s Achaman disco pub, but his international hit El Perdon in 2015 propelled him into the big league. The latest visit is part of Nicky’s Fenix tour, and he will be performing at Wembley Stadium in March. Ticket details have not yet been released
lished channels, to get the parts needed to recommission them and put them back into circulation. So they bought the weapons legally, using a fake sports-equipment company which did
not have the necessary licence. The arrests took place in the towns of Olot (Girona), Liendo (Cantabria), Galdácano and Guecho (Biscay). A sophisticated workshop was discovered in the latter town for the alterations and recommissioning of weapons. The method used to purchase weapons is the same as the one used for the attacks carried out in Paris in January 2015, against employees
of the Charlie Hebdo satirical weekly. Twelve people were killed and another 11 injured, all with recommissioned weapons acquired at the time from a Slovak gunsmith. This latest police operation was sparked by surveillance carried out by investigators on the weapons used by a terrorist in the attack in a Jewish Centre in Brussels in May 2014, when four people were killed by an Algerian of French nationality.
As a result, the Intelligence Corps is now focused on halting the sale of decommissioned firearms and military weapons to unauthorised users, organised crime gangs and terrorists. The police operation is being supported by EUROPOL, which has provided specialists to the team working in this area. This co-operation forms part of the National and European Union Security Strategy.

‘Charity fraud’ parents had sex, alongside child A SICK child’s Spanish parents, accused of charity fraud, are now being formally investigated for exhibitionism and sexual provocation after having sex in bed while their daughter lay awake next to them.
The judge overseeing the fraud investigation decided to expand the charges after studying sexual images found by police on a pen drive at the home of Fernando Blanco
and his wife, Marga Garau. Some photographs show the couple having sex while their daughter is lying next to them, while others show the naked child in various positions. The case has received widespread media attention in Spain, and Blanco and Garau were arrested at their Catalonia home in December on suspicion of raising money fraudulently through media campaigns to pay for what they said were cutting-edge treatments for their 11-yearold daughter, Nadia Nerea. She suffers from trichothiodystrophy (TTD),
South granted new pharmacies galore THE South of Tenerife will monopolise the majority of new pharmacies, expected to be opened on the islands before the summer. Of the 36 chemist licences awarded by the Ministry of Health, 27 will be installed in the South, between Candelaria and Santiago del Teide. The Arona and Adeje municipalities, with eight new
pharmacies each, will benefit the most. It’s also good news for Granadilla de Abona, with six pharmacies, while San Miguel and Candelaria get two and Santiago del Teide one. The other municipalities (Güímar, Arafo, Fasnia, Arico, Guía de Isora y Vilaflor) with have to make do with their current total of pharmacies.
a rare disease which can delay development and lead to significant intellectual disability and recurring infections. The possibility of the fundraising campaigns being a scam was uncovered by daily newspaper El País and a number of other media outlets, which revealed inconsistencies in Blanco’s story. Original reports put the sum of money obtained by Blanco and his wife for their daughter’s treatments at around 300,000 euros, including 153,000 euros in just four days during a recent publicity campaign. But police in the Catalan region later said the figure was closer to 918,000 euros. Last week, police found a pen drive with the photographs of Blanco and Garau having sex in the same bed as their daughter. Catalan regional police advised the judge that the photos could be evidence of “possession of child pornography”, as well as several other offences. The parents were questioned by the judge and, reportedly, told him that their daughter was asleep
and “unaware” of what was going on. The judge questioned this explanation, pointing out that in the photographs, Nadia is “a few centimetres” from the parents and “on the same mattress” The television is also on. He also said that in the photographs, “it can be seen that the child’s feet appear in different positions”. The judge said in his writ: “Either she was awake, or she woke up while the parents were having intimate relations.” The sexual relations are so explicit, including images of different “postures, rapid movement, close-ups of genitals, fellatio and the use of flash”, that the child, despite her medical condition, must have known what was happening. In a second group of nine photographs, Nadia appears naked in “different positions”. Blanco and Garau told the judge that these images had two purposes: to monitor the impact of her illness on her skin, as well as to portray her “funny gestures”. The judge responded by saying that if the parents
wanted to monitor Nadia’s skin, they should have taken “detailed” photographs, and not images of her naked body, in which it is “impossible” to identify ailments. The writ points out that Nadia is naked in all the images; on one occasion, “lying on the sofa with a hand over her genitals,” and in another, with “her legs open, showing her genitals”. The judge added that the location of the photographs, their context and the lack of any other reasonable explanation, led him to think there were “serious suspicions” that Blanco and Garau committed exhibitionism and sexual provocation. Nadia’s father has been in custody since December while being investigated for fraud. The judge has set a civil bond for his release of 1.2m euros. Her mother, meanwhile, out on bail, has had her custody of the child suspended. Wiretaps of conversations between the couple show Blanco was considering escape just hours before Catalan regional police located and arrested him, on 7th December, in La Seu d’Urgell, Catalonia.
Beauty is more than skin deep
THOUSANDS of people have been booted off the exclusive dating site B e a u t i f u l Pe o p l e . com because they have not taken good enough care of their once-stunning looks.
The unique site, which boasts more than 850,000 members in over 100 countries, vets applicants by asking existing members to rate their photos. Beautiful hopefuls who secure a majority of positive votes are accepted, but those with a majority of negative votes are rejected from the site. And now, it’s getting even tougher for the beauties because the site’s creators are forcing members to fight for their places again … and, rejecting them, coldheartedly, if they don’t make the cut. More than 120,000 members, who had failed to
upload recent photos, were required to do so to access the site. They were then moved back to the rating stage. Some 37% of those failed to
be voted back in, and, sadly for them, are no longer part of “Beautiful” set. Among the top reasons given for eviction were: gaining weight, losing hair
and failing to maintain high, grooming standards. “Ageing gracefully” was another factor for their rejection, and 11,345 UK members were dumped,
unceremoniously the second-highest eviction rate. Tops were the US contingent, with 12,134 failing to maintain the standards required to make the grade. The site has always carried out an annual members’ cull, year, and 2016 saw the worstever, with a record 45,000 voted out. Greg Hodge, global MD of BeautifulPeople.com said: “We need to make sure that the community’s high standards are upheld because, otherwise, we risk alienating our entire, exclusively-beautiful member base. “If people on the site let themselves go, we need to let them go. And our members demand as much. “Removing members for this reason is the most difficult part of the business, which may seem harsh, but it is a necessary evil.” He added: “Our speciality, our niche, is beautiful people, and we need to maintain that standard.”

Now, Lexus rides the waves at high speed LEXUS, bestknown for its luxury cars, has unveiled a stunning sports yacht, thanks to its top engineers, who have proved they can build super speedboats as well as supercars.
The yacht, powered by two five-litre V8 engines, based on the unit that powers the Lexus RC F coupe, can propel the vessel to nearly 50mph. The upper deck and outer hull are made from hand-laid carbon fibre, which Lexus also uses for its LFA supercar, and the design is absolutely eye-catching. It also has all the gadgets you’d expect from Lexus, and the captain monitors and controls onboard systems from a touchscreen panel. Screens show GPS navigation, digital charts, surface radar, underwater sonar, lighting and entertainment systems. Meanwhile, the captain’s seat is poweradjustable, with
armrests that fold out to become jump seats on either side. The standing-height forward passenger cabin is finished in luxurious leather with wood and glass details. And there is sofa seating for six, a table and airconditioning. The proof-of-concept sport yacht came from the Lexus Design Centre in Japan, where two separate teams were briefed to create an open sport’s yacht. It was for recreational, day-sailing, accommodating six to eight people and powered by twin high-performance Lexus V8 engines, with advanced handling and styling. Their concepts were submitted for evaluation in the summer of 2015. This speedboat is one
of the most glamorous vessels on the high seas. But, unfortunately it’s not for sale - at any price! Yoshihiro Sawa, Lexus International VicePresident, said: “For the Lexus Design Centre, this project has been very exciting, and the effort is valuable to us. “It stirs our creative energies and pushes our imagination to design and lifestyle possibilities outside the automotive realm we know so well.” The selected proposal was refined throughout 2015, with the Marine Department engineering the construction and onboard marine systems. Sadly, the concept is a bespoke, one-off project, and there are no plans to put the yacht into production.
Sweet incentive for children to eat their greens
Pay per chew! A LEADING obesity campaigner has suggested “bribing” children to eat their greens … by paying them!
The National Obesity Forum charity’s Tam Fry believes putting small sums of money into children’s bank accounts, in exchange for them eating vegetables, could solve the nation’s obesity crisis among youngsters. “Green vegetables have a bitter taste to children, but they must understand from an early age that not everything is sweet,” he said. “Any reward you might offer them to eat their vegetables must be something of value. And money is
always a good incentive. “It is a tangible reward for children eating their vegetables, and it also allows them to understand the value of money, and how to save it for later in life.” Mr Fry added: “It is also a way of introducing them to another aspect of growing-up and becoming responsible.” The charity representative’s proposal would include teaching children to keep their own accounting books to manage their money. He told the Sunday Times: “If the children eat their vegetables and accumulate enough money, they could then buy themselves a small gift.” But under no circumstances should parents use junk food as an incentive, stressed
Mr Fry. “Give them a pop CD, buy them a season-ticket, or give them money so they can buy themselves a gift.” Official figures suggest that the average child in England is eating three times the maximumrecommended levels, which is why 10% of pupils are obese when they start primary school, and one in five is as well, by the time he or she leaves. Simon Stevens, Chief Executive of NHS England, has warned that parents are doing lasting damage by failing to limit the problem. “As a society, as parents, we are doing something terribly wrong in terms of the way in which we are supporting and bringing up the next generation,” he said.

Abused elephants warm to their new life of bliss
Doggone it, I’ve missed the tour IT’S hard to believe, but a free bus tour, specifically for dogs and their owners, took to the streets of London this week.
THE Elephant Conservation and Care Centre in Mathura, northern India, has been kept especially busy this winter, rescuing the animals from horrific conditions and a lifetime of abuse.
And what will please its 23 inmates even more are the beautiful, bright drapes to help keep them cosy, knitted by kind-hearted local ladies. Kartick Satyanarayan founded the centre, which rescues elephants who have suffered chronic neglect, beatings and often an atrocious diet from cruel handlers. “We work hard to give these elephants a life of dignity and protection, while we also provide them ongoing treatment and care,” he said. “This winter we are making jumpers to give the jumbos in our care some warmth. It costs us about £800 monthly per elephant to provide them essential medical treatment, a nutritious diet and ongoing care. “And they really took to their jumpers! I know in some countries it is a bit of a joke to wear the most outlandish one of all, particularly around Christmas time. But the elephants care less about fashion and more about being warm.” Kartick might have to find extra knitters next year if his plan to rescue more elephants is successful. He has over 50 on a list and needs to secure extra land if they are to settle
with him and his devoted staff. Many of the elephants suffer eye damage through their cruel handlers (mahouts), who beat them about the head with iron bars and hooks. Laxmi, the chubbiest female elephant who received the biggest Christmas jumper, was dangerously overweight when rescued. She was barely able to walk or even open her eyes fully, having been fed fast-food, street-food, sweets and leftovers from human meals, instead of natural elephant fodder. Laxmi’s original owner, who trained her to be a begging elephant on the Mumbai streets, had no idea how to take care of such a huge animal elephant. Besides being obese, Laxmi’s feet and legs were in a pitiful condition, having to bear her massive weight as she struggled with chronic arthritis while walking on the tarred Mumbai roads. But although she’s still heavy, Laxmi has regained her health and vigour after being taken to the centre. Old burgers and fried chicken have given way to apples, and her nights chained up in a filthy garage have been exchanged for a pen, with other elephants all around her. Phoolkali spent the first 45 odd years of her life working as a begging elephant, spending long hours in the sun without any water, and destroying her aching feet slowly. Years of mistreatment, abuse and inadequate care
left this beautiful animal mentally frail and completely blind in one eye. In addition, she had a large, chronic abscess near her other eye, on her temple, which was proof of repeated jabs with a bull-hook. After being enticed into a truck with sugar-cane, she travelled for 12 hours to her new home. And for years, she was the first to be rewarded with a Christmas jumper. Kartick said: “Her diet is tailored to her needs. And daily treats of her favourite fresh fruit, and large doses of clarified butter, have helped her gain a healthy amount of weight, and a lot of confidence. “Phoolkali goes on long walks with her companions and eats besides them, and their companionship and love has been a prominent factor in her recovery from an abusive history.” Another jumper recipient is Suzy who, at 65, is the grand dame of the centre. Totally blind through abuse, a companion elephant called Asha acts as her guide, steering her away from obstacles when they walk together. Suzy’s blindness and poor mental and physical health were sparked by the traumas she suffered at the hands of her previous owners at a circus, where she was forced to perform unnatural tricks, working for hours on end without any rest or water. And she was kept in extremely unhygienic conditions. Thankfully for her, and all her chums at the centre, their evil existences are gone forever.
They were invited to experience a sightseeing trip around the capital, complete with stop-offs for walkies at pooch-friendly restaurants, and at caninethemed attractions. The bus route saw dogs taken to some of London’s best parks and city-centre walking spots, including Hyde Park, Kensington Palace Gardens and Green Park. Along the way, there was live, on-board commentary for dog-owners, which described London’s rich, canine history. It included spotlights on the ministerial dogs of Downing Street, the many corgis which have shared Buckingham Palace with the Queen, and the location of London’s only dog cemetery. The route focused on a number of London’s most scenic dog-walking hotspots, including Hyde Park and Green Park, for owners to take their pooch for a stroll if they chose. Owners were also provided
with a handy leaflet, mapping dog-friendly pubs, bars and restaurants in the area, where owner and and pet could refuel together after their walkies. During the one-hour trip, the customised London Routemaster, aptly numbered K9, also drove past an array of points of interest with a connection to dogs in the city, with expert insight provided throughout by the on-board commentator. When driving past Downing Street, you might have be told: “Chancellor Phillip Hammond’s Welsh Terrier Rex, and Dachshund Oscar, were recently pictured posing outside No.11 for the annual Christmas card.” Or, as the bus whistled past Buckingham Palace, you could be informed: “Queen Elizabeth II has owned more than 30 corgis during her reign, and currently has one named Willow.” The tour bus for dogs, beginning and ending at Millbank, near the Tate Britain, embarked on a figure-of-eight route around Hyde Park, Kensington Palace and Green Park. Unfortunately, it finished yesterday, which is a bit rough if it tickled your fancy. Or your dog’s, of course.

Tourists ignore Brexit
By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct
DESPITE the volatility of sterling to euro, the highest, overall tourist expenditure in 2016 (Jan-Nov) came from the UK at 21% of the total, with an expenditure of over 15bn euros.
This good news means that tourists from the UK were not letting Brexit affect their holidays; nor were they put off by getting fewer euros for their pounds. At the end of last week, we saw the euro gain some strength with better-than-expected, industrial-production activity in the Eurozone. It was quite a surprise for economists, with the euro experiencing a good recovery against
the US dollar. The main marketmovers this week have been Brexit and the Presidential Election. Increased concerns over a hard Brexit, and the forthcoming EU negotiations, put additional pressure on sterling, and Donald Trump’s press conference also gave rise to concern on the markets. But instead of the anticipated drop, Tuesday saw good news for the pound after Theresa May’s speech regarding Brexit. After all the uncertainty, Mrs May made it clear that “Out was Out”, and put the onus on Europe to negotiate properly. She will be offering an open door to new deals and aims to get the best deal possible in relation to Europe and elsewhere. The Prime Minister spoke of EU citizens in the UK remaining, and said she expected Europe to return the compliment. Although the market previously expected
a hard exit to have a negative impact on sterling, the pound is higher, in fact, because now there is no confusion. It’s Exit, plain and simple. For sterling, the market wanted a clear,
short-term plan, and, currently, Theresa May has shown her strength. It remains to be seen how long that will last… Wednesday saw the release of employment numbers in the UK, and today (Friday) will show
c o n s u m e r- s p e n d i n g figures. Yesterday (Thursday), the European Central Bank gave the latest interest-rate decision, followed by a press conference with President Draghi.
Some analysts believe that, with inflation heading towards the 2% target, the ECB could even consider reducing the current stimulus package. Last but not least, today we have the US presidential inauguration of Donald Trump, which will be televised from around 3pm. It will be interesting to see what, if any, impact this will have on the US dollar to Euro. Will it be a case of “José, can you see?”or for the pound: “Oh, I say old chap, can you see?” Have a good weekend! Whether you’re moving to Spain or transferring money overseas, keep on top of the currency market. Our friendly experts at Currencies Direct are only a phone call away whenever you need them. Cadbury’s switch to Poland takes biscuit THE American owner of Cadbury’s has broken a seven-year pledge by making some portion of the company’s iconic Dairy Milk chocolate bars in Poland, rather than at its British base.
The Mondelez brand, which was created by Kraft, is making large 300gm bars of Dairy Milk, and some classic size 95gm bars. This move defies a promise, given in the wake of Kraft’s bitter takeover of the British company in 2010, that it would continue to make the confectionery at the historic home of Bournville, in the West Midlands. The factory code
below the “best-before” date is crucial because OWR means Wracklow, which refers to one of its Polish factories. And large Dairy Milk
bars, brandishing that specific code on the wrapper, have been on sale in various major UK retailers, while the 95gm bars have been
sold in smaller shops. Mondelez insists the Poland production of 95gm bars was a “temporary move” because Bournville had
been busy. But many traditionalists claim it is another indication that the link is being weakened between Britain’s biggest
chocolate brand and its old Quaker headquarters near Birmingham. James Cadbury, a member of the founding family, who now runs his own chocolate company, Love Cocoa, said: “I’m very disappointed. Bournville and Dairy Milk are synonymous.” Within weeks of Kraft’s £11.5bn takeover of Cadbury in 2010, it closed a factory in Somerdale, near Bristol, putting 400 people out of work. As a result, Kraft executives were quizzed by MPs. Trevor Bond, President of Kraft Foods Europe, said the company would continue to make Dairy Milk in the UK “for as long as our consumers are delighted by the taste and the product”. And Mondelez said: “The 95gm bar has returned to Bournville.”

World’s Most Extraordinary Homes BBC2, 21.00
Award-winning architect Piers Taylor and actress and property enthusiast Caroline Quentin explore extraordinary homes built in coastal locations. The first stop is an island in Norway, for a stay in a four-bedroom house built on a footprint of just 100 square meters. Built from timber covered with concrete to withstand the extremes of weather, Piers and Caroline settle into this beautiful island escape with a swim followed by a barbeque. Next is southern Spain, to an unconventional home built into a steep cliff face overlooking the Mediterranean. Piers and Caroline then head to the other side of the world to New Zealand’s South Island in Marlborough Sounds. This three-bedroom house is built from two separate wooden cladded structures, both held aloft by a series of hard wood timbers and linked by a glazed bridge corridor. Their final stop is Nova Scotia, to a house inspired by two ships in dry dock.
Tina and Bobby ITV1, 21:00 Drama series telling the true story of Tina and Bobby Moore’s marriage. In the second episode, after Bobby leads England to World Cup glory, Tina joins him in the spotlight and she becomes the first WAG. The price of fame soon becomes clear, leading Tina to fear that success will destroy their marriage.

The Halcyon ITV1, 21.00
Toby is working at the War Office when he hears that Squadron 392 has gone down – that’s Freddie’s squadron. He can’t get any more information at this stage, but tells Garland and Emma – she is aghast, but tries to stifle it – she’s got work to do. Joe has drinks with Peyton Delane, the owner of his station. He’s “calling him up to the majors” – his own chat show, focusing on news and entertainment. He’s done well in London, but this show’s going to be in America…and it’s going to make him a star. Delane puts the package forward to Joe: it’s very lucrative. He can’t refuse. Joe comes into the reception and sees Americans everywhere leaving – as he explains to Garland, he’ll have to add his name to the list. He’s leaving on Monday evening. Emma is icily restrained about it, but hints that she’s unsurprised that Joe is fleeing the country as war sets in. Adil sends room service up to Toby via Tom, who doesn’t understand why Toby’s so awkward. Betsey comes across Sonny playing a trumpet – his father’s. He can’t master it and she teases him about it, but he intends to persist. As they go onstage, a woman appears who doesn’t quite fit with the average clientele of the Halcyon. Betsey sees Feldman remonstrating with the woman, and rushes forward: it’s her mother, Gloria. Betsey’s embarrassed, but also delighted to see her. Gloria seems to have made a fresh start. But Sonny watches on, unsettled and wary of Gloria, and the reaction she incites from Betsey. Lucian and Lady Hamilton continue their flirtation: she reveals she’s never been to the cinema, thinking it a pastime of the lower classes. He’s charmed, and promises to take her. Freddie returns, and Emma realizes how tense she’s been until this point, waiting for news of him: he’s unharmed, but his copilot Radimsky’s plane crashed, and he’s recovering in hospital. In sheer relief at his luck, Emma and Freddie go to his room they are interrupted when Lillian comes in, almost catching Freddie and Emma together. After catching Lillian gossiping about what she nearly saw, Garland reveals to Peggy that he suspects Emma and Freddie are seeing each other. He fears he’ll break her heart – through his status or the danger he faces. Joe’s producer reveals that his show’s been cancelled: Delane doesn’t intend to leave a correspondent in London to cover the war. Joe’s horrified – how can Delane leave the English alone like this? Impassioned, he continues to persevere with Emma, trying to make it clear that he’ll still be supporting England from the sidelines. She remains skeptical. Meanwhile, Lady Hamilton goes to Toby ahead of her date to the cinema with Lucian, and tacitly asks for his blessing: it’s clear she’s nervous. When they arrive at the cinema, she wonders whether, in holding back from new experiences, she’s been the one missing out. Toby rebukes Adil for sending coffee up to his room: he crossed a line. Adil’s embarrassed and chastened. Meanwhile, romantic awkwardness has reached Lady Hamilton: while her attention is rapt in the cinema, the lights go up to reveal Billy, Kate and Robbie there too – and they’ve spotted her. Mortified, she rushes out in a panic and demands that Lucian find her a car.

Food Unwrapped Channel 4, 20:30
Jimmy Doherty, Kate Quilton and Matt Tebbutt continue to travel the globe to uncover more unusual, intriguing and surprising secrets behind the food we eat. Kate investigates eucalyptus. It’s found in throat lozenges and chewing gum, but what exactly is it, where does it come from, and why is it so good at clearing the airwaves? In Australia, Kate meets one of the world’s cutest animals: the koala, raised from birth on a diet of eucalyptus. Kate finds out that eucalyptus is highly toxic, but a local farmer shows her the clever way it’s made safe for human consumption. Jimmy’s puzzling over pickles. Most pickled goods contain vinegar, but pickled cabbage - or sauerkraut - has no vinegar at all, despite tasting decidedly vinegary. So what’s going on? To find out, Jimmy visits a very chilly Poland, the home of sauerkraut, before learning about a remarkable new use for sauerkraut juice in a French power station.

Further Back In Time For Dinner - The 1900s BBC2, 21.00
The Robshaw family travel back in time again - this time to the turn of the 20th century, where they discover how the transformation in what people ate helped create the modern family. An ordinary house in South London will be their time machine, transporting them through five decades and two world wars. Guided by presenters Giles Coren and social historian Polly Russell they’ll trace the incredible changes to Britain’s diet and the extraordinary social transformation they reveal. As they enter the 1900s they discover an unrecognisable world of strict etiquette, corsets and conformity. But the biggest surprise is a new addition to the household: Debbie Raw, a part-time chef in the 21st century, is going back in time to be the family’s maid of all work, responsible for all the cooking and cleaning. At the perfectly laid dining table, the Robshaws discover a decade of excess, ending up feeling as stuffed as the décor of their 1900s house. Their first meal is a mere five courses with a meaty pudding - but that’s a simple amuse bouche to what follows. Servant Debbie must produce an eight-course dinner party in a Victorian kitchen with not so much as a hand blender to help her.

Royal Recipes BBC1, 15:45
Michael Buerk presents a royal-themed food programme, celebrating dishes served from the time of George IV to the reign of Elizabeth II. Michael is joined by chef Anna Haugh in the magnificent kitchen of one of Britain’s grandest stately homes to celebrate food served at royal weddings. Anna is inspired by an Italian lamb dish served at the wedding of Queen Victoria’s youngest daughter. Food historian Dr Annie Gray meets Fiona Cairns, the baker who created the official wedding cake for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The former chef to Charles and Diana cooks the chocolate biscuit cake that Prince William chose as an alternative cake for his wedding. Plus the programme unearths a recipe that has been hidden in the royal archive for over a hundred years.

Hospital BBC2, 21:00
Six-part documentary capturing the day-to-day realities facing the NHS right now. After collapsing at work, crane driver Phil is becoming increasingly paralysed with each passing day. Kevin O’Neill, one of the country’s leading brain surgeons, diagnoses him with a fastgrowing brain tumour and decides to perform a potentially lifethreatening operation to remove it. O’Neill and his colleagues deal with some of the country’s most complex and challenging neurological cases. Their work is so in demand, the department has one of the longest waiting lists in the country. But the hospital is determined to clear the backlog of patients - some have been waiting for their operations for over a year. The pressure is on for O’Neill and his team to get through a packed list. At the same time, the Trust is pioneering a form of non-invasive brain surgery that replaces knives and drills with MRI-focussed ultrasound waves.

Women Who Kill Channel 4, 22:00 One third of the world’s female prison population is in America; 30,000 of them are serving long sentences for murder. But unlike many male murderers, female killers tend to know their victims. So what pushes ordinary women to kill people they know and love? This documentary meets three women behind bars for murdering people they knew. Each has an extraordinary story. Amber Hilberling was 19 years old and seven months pregnant when she pushed her husband out of a 25-storey high-rise window. She has always maintained her innocence. Patricia Ignacio admits bludgeoning to death her cousin with a rock, and Ana Trujillo murdered her boyfriend by stabbing him 25 times with her stiletto shoe.

Tony Robinson investigates how burial customs have changed and evolved over thousands of years of British history, in Time Team’s guide to burial. Thanks to two decades of digging burial sites, Time Team can draw on extraordinary evidence from Neolithic bone caves, Bronze Age cemeteries, Roman mausoleums, jewellery-laden Anglo Saxon burials and even funeral pyres. And with the help of resident experts Jackie McKinley and Francis Pryor, Tony explores how, from the flowers on the grave and the black veil, to the wake after the funeral, the way we bury our dead is rooted in customs that go back thousands of years. Some of the Team’s most intensive digs have involved burials and the programme revisits many impressive sites, including one in the Outer Hebrides, one in the Peak District and a Roman fort near Hadrian’s Wall.

The Cult Next Door BBC2, 21.00
This documentary by acclaimed director Vanessa Engle tells the extraordinary story of a strange cult, which came to light in 2013, when a sensational news story broke about three women emerging from a small flat in Brixton in South London after decades in captivity. Tracing the group back to its roots in the 1970s, the film describes how its leader, Aravindan Balakrishnan, a student of Indian origin, believed in an international communist revolution and created a tiny political sect that followed the teachings of China’s Chairman Mao. The film features exclusive interviews with two of the women who escaped: Aisha Wahab, a 72 year-old Malaysian woman who was part of Balakrishnan’s group for 40 years, and Katy Morgan-Davies, Balakrishnan’s daughter, who was born and raised in captivity. The film documents how this left-wing collective evolved into a bizarre pseudo-religious cult, where members were controlled, threatened and brainwashed, so that they were too terrified to leave.

Whether it be to find food or look out for predators, babysit or even just a bit of grooming, the Spy Creatures act as a guide through a world where one with friends will always come out on top. Spy Wolf Pup discovers the trials of arctic wolf life in one of the harshest landscapes on Earth, where reliance upon one another is essential for survival against the elements. Spy Warthog meets a band of mongoose as they search for food before finding real warthogs that they groom for tasty morsels then turning their attention to Spy Warthog. Spy Hippo meets the real hippos as they forge a relationship with fish that clean their bodies plus offer a unique dental service. She is called in to help with mooring the 330m long ship in a port built to take much smaller vessels and tasked with launching one of the ship’s tender boats, involving lowering it seven decks into the water below. With a driver on board, this is a big moment for Lauren, who has the life of one of her colleagues in her hands. Executive chef David McDonald is on the warpath after receiving a complaint about afternoon teas. Hauling the pastry team into his office for a severe dressing down, he decides to throw down the gauntlet to the head of pastry Ruel, offering him the chance to redeem himself by creating three unique new desserts for the menu. It’s a big risk for Ruel, whose job is on the line if he fails to impress. Also awaiting his fate in chef’s department is galley assistant Nico who has set his hopes on a job on the front desk. With his final trial shift looming, has he done enough to secure a new position in a more glamorous area of the ship? Hotel services engineer Scott is dealing with a flood from one of the ornamental marble fountains in the busiest area of the ship. With only a few hours before the passengers return from excursions ready to dance the night away in the piazza, Scott and his team will have to fix it, clean up the mess and make sure it’s all looking shipshape again.

Unbeknownst to him, the investigation into David’s death also starts to shed light on the reason for Colin’s departure from his city life, which may explain his subsequent breakdown. 999: What’s Your Emergency? Channel 4, 22:00
The series about the work of police and paramedics in Cheshire explores the lives of legal and illegal immigrants living here. It’s increasingly falling to the emergency services to bridge cultural divides and keep a lid on racial tensions. In Crewe, PC Greg Greaves finds himself at a heated arrest after reports of shoplifting from a supermarket. He has to call for backup as the two suspects shout claims of abuse and racism at him. In Warrington, paramedic Becki arrives at the home of Marika, a Latvian woman who has been mugged in the street and left with a black eye. Unable to speak English and with no friends in the neighbourhood, Marika waited 24 hours for her daughter to return home to call 999. Meanwhile, PC Niaz Waddington and his colleagues are keeping a close eye on Saturday night revelers, as the number of racially-aggravated incidents dealt with by Cheshire Police on a typical weekend has doubled in five years.

Meet Toby TOBY is looking for his forever home in his twilight years. He’s 10 years old, and is small and affectionate. Like most older dogs, he has some aches and pains, and is blind in one eye. He says: “None of this phases me, though, and I still love life and enjoy short walks. I came to the refuge because my elderly owner became very ill and could no longer look after me. “We were both very sad about that. We had been together, just the two of us, for many years, so I did get very protective. I would love to have a home where I can give all my love to just one person, and be soul mates. “I found it very hard to cope in the refuge, and now live in a foster home. My lovely foster mum says I am such an affectionate boy, and would be the perfect companion in a home that suits me. “Do you have a place in your heart for me, please? In return, I promise to give you so much love. If you would like to meet me, please
get in touch with my people at K9 in any of the ways mentioned below.” Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safe-andsecure, forever homes. Cats Welfare news
Keep senior cats happy and healthy CATS are living longer than ever because of modern improvements in nutrition and veterinary care. Senior cats make great pets, but can require a bit of special care. As they age, cats, like humans, often struggle mentally and physically. Arthritis makes it difficult to get around, and changes in their brains cause confusion and behavioural issues. None of this needs to cause a problem, though, with a little extra care. Work with your vet to create and maintain a healthy diet for your cat. There are lots of specialist foods for senior cats that can help with various health issues that may develop, such as kidney problems and arthritis. Very elderly cats may become disorientated. If this happens, confine your cat to a few safe and comfortable rooms,
if it seems to become confused easily. Make sure that the rooms get a lot of use, as your cat may become more affectionate than ever as it ages. Many elderly cats become more vocal, particularly in the middle of the night, when they are restless and confused. Try calling out to your cat in soothing tones, but, if this behaviour becomes a problem, see your vet. A very mild sedative may be prescribed. They may develop litter-tray problems, but you can take steps to prevent bad behaviour. Consider placing more litter boxes around your house, so that your cat is never too far away from one. If you normally use highsided boxes, switch to a lower one so that your cat can get in and out more easily. Don’t skimp on socialisation and play, just because your cat is sleeping more. Older cats need mental stimulation and physical exercise to keep them interested and fit. Try using foodbased puzzle toys, or wands with feathers or bells. Regularly groom your elderly cat, as it may not be as capable of grooming itself as when
it was younger. A little bit of extra care can go a long way towards improving the health of a senior cat. Here are some reasons why adopting an older cat just makes sense. Donations Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas
in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

With a little help… ONE really good, positive aspect of living here in Tenerife is the way the ex-pat community pulls together and looks after its own in times of crisis.
It has become a tradition that when an entertainer is ill, his or her colleagues put on a showcase of their talents with the aim of raising cash to help through times of not working and, therefore, not earning.
The next of these shows will be held at Bar 39, El Mirador, Los Cristianos, on Wednesday, 1st February, from 8pm, and it promises to be a good one. Phil Fletcher, from the bar’s resident duo Kracka, fell ill on New Year’s Eve and will not be working for the next few months. His work partner Tony Bailey and Suzy q are organising the show, which filled up with the island’s finest cabaret within hours of being made public. Please be early if you want to support the evening, and be
entertained by the likes of Lee St Lawrence, Cy Benson, Ged Bolton, Robbie Dominic, Stuart Beagley, George King, Wham a Gogo, Nik Page, Tanya Tevaro, Colin Stevens, Spencer Robson, Dee Daniels, Arthur Peterson and Danny Day. Making it even better is that the event will be broadcast live by Oasis Fm from 8pm, so if you can’t make it, you can at least listen live. What we need now are more raffle prizes and items we can auction, so if you can help, please call Sue on 629 388 102. Hope to see you there.

C H I L DR E N grow at an alarmingly-fast rate, which means their height and weight varies quickly. This, in turn, means that the car-restraint system in which they might be travelling can become too small for them for safety and comfort.
Kids require a restraint system that adjusts to all their growing demands to keep them protected, which means using different types as they grow. The differences in restraint systems are characterised into groups, according to international homologation (strict standards). Always try
43 CW
Car-restraint systems to protect the children to place the restraint system in the rear middle seat where possible, because this reduces the risk of injury in a side-impact. Having the child in the correct system reduces the risk of death in a road-traffic accident by 75%, and it also reduces the injury risk by 90%. I will explain the different groups of childrestraint systems, and give you details about each group and its characteristics, so that your little ones always travel in maximum safety. I will also explain about the new I-size restraint systems, although this law is set to be modified again later this year. Group 0 (from 0 to 10 kilos) up to approximately one year of age This is a carry-cot designed specifically for newborns and babies up to 10kg. This type of
restraint system must be fitted in the rear seat of the car, and in a transversal position across the rear seat, with the baby’s head towards the inside of the car. These types of
restraint systems are never recommended, except in exceptional circumstances. I-size restraint system (45-75cm) until approximately one year of age This system complies
with the new rulings, with an ISOFIX connection for babies whose height is 4575cm. The carry-cot comes with a five-point harness to provide maximum protection, and it’s fitted in a rearfacing position, in either the front or back seat. It can be fitted in the front seat, but ONLY if the passenger’s airbag is disconnected, or if there isn’t one present in that particular type of vehicle. Group 0 and 0+ (from 0 to 13 kilos) This system allows the baby to be carried in the rear or front seat of the car, but in the front seat ONLY if the passenger’s air bag is disconnected, or if the car doesn’t have one. The restraint system is always fitted in a rearfacing position. The system protects the baby via a five-point harness fitted to the restraint system, which
is then anchored to the car, by the vehicle’s three-point seat belt, or via an ISOFIX anchor. The restraint system would be changed to the next group, when the baby’s head comes out of the restraint system, or when he/she weighs 13kg. I-size restraint system up to 105 cm (from 6 months to 4 years, approx) This system again complies with the security standards expressed in the i-size law, which came into effect in 2013. They are used for children up to a maximum height of 105cm, and are always fitted to the ISOFIX anchorage points. Each restraint system comes with its own fivepoint security harness, which allows the maximum anchorage to the rear of the seat. In the next issue, I will cover the next sizes and ages.

CAUGHT
IN A TRAP By Carl from Robot
DON’T let this happen to you; a hair trap that is. There’s no age when you should stop looking gorgeous, and keeping up to it couldn’t be easier.
There are so many glamorous, mature women around that you should have your own, hair role model. Sometimes, if you are stuck in a rut with your hair, it’s best to consult your stylist. He will be able to guide you through what’s hot, and what’s not, regarding your style. We, at Robot, have a way of thinking about mature clients; as long as you’re
willing to show interest in your hair, then so are we. Finding the right style will take years off you. The right colour will lift your face, and the right cut will enhance your features. Why so many mature women give up on their looks as they get older, I will never know. People are still interested in your image, and your
stylist should be, too. Don’t be fobbed off in the salon with a style that’s “right for your age”. Who wants to look his, or her, age? Shaving off a few years can easily be achieved. Hairdressers have an eye for doing this. We can see if your style is dragging you down, or if your colour isn’t quite the right shade for you. We train for years to be able to do this. Look at your friends. Do they look good for their ages? If they do, this is always, partly, because of their hair, which isn’t too masculine or “set” in place. This is the key to mature hair looking its best, and actually doing something positive for your image. Consult us at Robot Hair for a free consultation, and stop your hair falling into a rut.
ON YOUR BIKE! By Carl Pattison AS we are creeping into Spring and leaving Winter behind there’s a trend that’s raising its head in a lot of the major stores, and that’s Biker Chic. Layers of casual, yet stylish, clothes are worn to appear as though you haven’t tried, but they still look ultra cool. The basis of this is the short, cropped, fauxleather (pleather) jacket that has been seen in various shades, from the iconic black to reds, deep blues and even whites. You don’t have to be twenty-something to rock this look, as it can be toned down for any age
group. The key is that you don’t over-glamorise the idea. Keep it low key, with an emphasis on masculine meets feminine. Your jeans should be rough looking but not dishevelled, and you can team up the look with an oversized satchel bag and ankle boots to match. Slightly-studded belts and details are being seen again. As long as they’re not over the top, metals work well with leather-effect clothing. Nowadays, there’s really no need to wear real leather, as fake looks just as good. It’s undetectable, as well as being better on price.
Underneath your jacket, keep the items simple. A plain T-shirt or shirt will do the trick, because anything too fussy will ruin the effect. Biker Chic isn’t supposed to look as though you’ve just got off a bike. It’s inspiration which can help you piece together your individual slant, on one of Spring’s newest looks.
By Miruna Voicu WHEN people buy a property abroad, they sometimes don’t think about what they will need after the purchase has gone through.
After all, finding the right property, appointing a solicitor, getting all the money in place and signing at the notary can be timeconsuming, and rather stressful. And then what? If you’ve bought a new property, you are literally starting from scratch, and you will need to draw up a whole inventory list of what you want and need, right down to kitchen utensils. If you buy a pre-owned property, you may well need to replace some items such as mattresses, or even all the soft furnishings, to bring it up to your personal standards. Where do you go, and who do you turn to when you don’t speak the language, and your remaining time here may be limited? A turn-key furniture service is one where you supply the ideas of what you want to achieve, both in terms of practicality and design, and hand it over to someone else to complete in your absence. When you return to the island, everything is installed and fitted, and
Turn-key furniture services
your new property is ready to use, right down to the last tea-spoon. This principle has been working successfully here for over 25 years, especially for the UK residents who buy in Tenerife, because of its convenience. You get exactly what you want, without any of the hassle. All the items can be grouped together and delivered and fitted without any inconvenience to you, and you can stay in the property as soon as you return to the island, making it cost-efficient as well. You can pay a deposit, and the balance once you have seen the results, so the whole thing is risk-free as well!
Of course, there are multi-national companies here now who supply a range of adequate furniture, but who really wants a property with the same, mass-produced appearance as everyone else? After all, interior design is all about putting your own stamp on it, and expressing your personality through colours and designs. Consider using an interior design service that will take into account all your personal preferences and ideas, and translate them into a practical and efficient furnishing service. All items and services mentioned are available from Deco Nuevo.

Be aware of cancer signs By Val Sainsbury THE majority of us are aware of the mostcommon signs of cancer, but some symptoms are not recognised so widely.
Here are 20 situations which may be indicative of the presence of cancer. Wheezing/shortness of breath Lung-cancer patients remember noticing this as one of their first symptoms, but they didn’t, initially, connect it to cancer. Frequent fevers or infections This is often a sign of leukaemia, a cancer of the blood cells that starts in the bone marrow. It causes the marrow to produce abnormal white blood cells, which hinder your body’s infection-
fighting abilities. Difficulty swallowing This is associated most commonly with throat cancer, but can also be a reliable indicator of lung cancer. Weakness and fatigue This is such a common symptom of cancer that it should be looked at in combination with other symptoms, to determine which type it is. Feeling full and unable to eat It is a sign of ovarian cancer. A loss of appetite, even when you haven’t eaten for a while, is a tip-off. Loss of appetite Could be an early sign of pancreatic cancer. A sudden dislike of coffee, wine or smoking can also be linked to this, as well as visible bodily changes. Rectal bleeding, or blood in stool This is a common sign of colo-rectal cancer. Blood in the toilet should be a big enough reason to see a doctor immediately. Lumps in the neck, underarm or groin area Swollen lymph nodes
indicate changes in the lymphatic system, which can lead to cancer. Excessive bruising, or bleeding that doesn’t stop This suggests abnormalities with the platelets and red blood cells, which can be a leukaemia sign. Leukaemia cells crowd out red blood cells, impairing your blood’s ability to carry oxygen, leading to clots. Bloating or abdominal weight gain Ovarian cancer patients reported unexplained bloating that came on suddenly, and continued for a significant time. Unexplained weight loss This is an early sign of colon and other digestive cancers. It is also a sign that cancer has spread to the liver, affecting your appetite and the body’s ability to get rid of waste. A red, sore or swollen breast This indicates inflammatory breast cancer, and unexplained chang-
US go bananas for our olive oil
BULK sales of olive oil from Spain to the US have gone through the roof, according to the latest figures from the International Olive Council (IOC).
In 2007, some 16% of 113,000 tons of olive oil, mainly from Spain, were delivered to the States. And last year, that amount had increased to more than 42% of 331,368 tons. In fact, Spain accounted for 62% of the country’s 2016 bulk imports, while Italy’s share of the blossoming, large-container market, was just 4%. Having accounted for two-thirds of olive oil imported in bottles and tins at one time, it now distributes half that figure.
es should be conveyed to a doctor, immediately. A nipple that appears flattened, inverted or turned sideways, had also been noticed by patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Swelling of facial features Lung-cancer patients have reported noticing puffiness, swelling or redness of the face. Small-cell lung tumours block blood vessels in the chest commonly, preventing blood from flowing freely to the head. Sore/lump on the skin that bleeds, becomes crusty or doesn’t heal Different types of skin cancer (melanoma, basal-cell carcinoma and squamous-cell carcinoma) can cause these, so be aware of any odd-looking growths or spots. Changes in nails A brown/black dot under the nail can indicate skin cancer. Pale or white nails can be a sign of liver cancer. “Clubbing”, which is the enlargement of the fingers with nails that curve down over the
tips, can be a sign of lung cancer. Unusually heavy or painful periods, bleeding between periods A common sign of endometrial or uterine cancer. A trans-vaginal ultrasound should be considered if the problem persists. Chronic cough or chest pain Leukaemia and lung tumours (among others), show symptoms that can mimic a bad cough or bronchitis. Some patients also reported a chest pain that extended to the shoulder and down their arm. Pelvic/abdominal pain Pain and cramping in the pelvis can be linked with the bloating signs of ovarian cancer. Leukaemia also does this because it enlarges the spleen. Pain in back or lowerright side This is often an early sign of liver cancer. Breast cancer can also result in this symptom, because a breast tumour can press backwards into the
chest, or spread to the spine/ribs. Upset stomach Stomach cramps, or a frequently-upset stomach, can be a sign of colo-rectal cancer. How to reduce your risk Vitamin D is a known cancer preventative, so normalise your levels through careful sunlight exposure and supplements. Keep your insulin levels down by reducing or eliminating processed food. Regular exercise not only keeps your body in good health but also helps to drive insulin levels down. Reduce exposure to environmental toxins like pesticides, household chemical cleaners, synthetic air-fresheners and airpollution. Some studies suggest that long-term cellphone usage, over a period of 10 years or more, could be linked to brain tumours. And it is not unusual for 10 or more years to pass between exposure to a cancer risk and diagnosis. So be safe and prepared.

Behind the Mic...
WITH the police swarming the area, looking for a missing young Gordon King, his parents could be forgiven for being furious when he finally returned home, in the early hours of the morning. But his father was to provide a surprise twist to the tale! Gordon recalled: “The first couple of bands I was in were just schoolboys. They weren’t as serious about it as me, and just wanted to play guitars to meet girls. “But when I was 13, I was noticed by a group called Chantilly Lace, who were Edinburgh boys in their late teens and early twenties. “The three guys came to the house one Sunday afternoon to speak with my parents. They asked m y
Mum if I could go out to play. “I didn’t t h i n k they’d let me go, so I was down the s t a i r s w i t h my bass g u i t a r, before she could ask any questions. “I went to a gig with them that Sunday afternoon, and didn’t get back until 2am on the Monday. “My Mum thought I’d gone to play football, and that the boys had looked very old, but she didn’t think any more of it. “I had school that day, and when we got back after the gig, my

Money does the talking parents had the police out looking for me. “My Mum asked where I’d been, and I insisted that she’d given me her permission. But she thought I’d gone to play football, and not to perform in a band! “So the lads apologised, and asked Dad if I could play with them again. ‘No, no,’ was his reply. ‘He is never, ever going again.’ “At the time, Dad was probably only earning about 15 quid a week, and one of the lads said: ‘OK. Then what will I do with his wages? He’s earned a fiver.’ “To which my Dad replied: ‘What time do you want him next week?’ “So, at the age of 13, I had played bass guitar and sung harmony vocals in my first professional gig.” Oasis Fm DJ Gordon, 61, was born in Edinburgh. “But I was made in Germany,” he said with a chuckle, “ a n d there’s no Scottish in me at all. I’ve got an I r i s h father a n d
a German mother.” He is proud Dad to daughters Ailsa-Craig, 28, and Skye, 35, both named after Scottish islands. As a music-loving youngster, who also enjoyed sport, Gordon learned to play the piano from the age of five. He remembered: “One day, I went to my Uncle Harry’s house and played his piano. “I’d been to see the Sound of Music, and played the Do-Re-Mi song by ear. I started lessons after that.” He left school at 16. “One October, when I was about 17, I told Dad that I wanted an acoustic guitar for Christmas,” he said. “He pointed out that I already had a guitar, but I wanted an acoustic one! “He walked over to our battered old piano and said that if could learn to play his favourite song, Roger Miller’s Little Green Apples, by Nov 15th, I could have one! So I did! His life took a turn in April 1976, when he and his friend went to pick grapes in France. “We were just kids of 20, and didn’t realise they weren’t harvested until September!” he said. “Before going, I had just split
up with my girlfriend, Lesley, who went to Cornwall to work. And, with no grapes to pick, we decided to join her.” He added: “Performing in Cornwall was so easy compared with clubland, because everyone was on holiday, and they were much nicer than those who’d only got the weekend off. “It was great fun, and we had a cracking time. I learned how to surf and had a beautiful board. And then the heatwave started, and the sea went flat for nine weeks! “For five years, Lesley and I lived in a VW camper-van, surfing around Europe. It was a great life; no ties, no mortgages and no kids! Gordon, who holds an Equity card, performed with Bernard Manning at The Embassy Club in Manchester. He has also played bass guitar in a band at the Cornish club “Talk of the West”, and worked with top entertainers Freddie Starr and Max Wall. “I first came to Tenerife 33 years ago, when I was 28,” he said. “I wanted to surf at the Socorro Beach in Puerto de la Cruz, which I had once seen in a film. We arrived in the van, with five boards on the roof.” About 10 years ago, Gordon was involved in a horrific crash in the mountains while on his motorbike. “I feel great, even though I’ve got metal inserted all over my body,” he recalled. “I was airlifted to hospital. It was my only trip in a helicopter, and
I can’t even remember it!” He is on air Mondays and Thursdays, midnight-2am, and plays his favourite classic rock, including iconic greats such as Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath. “I love my job with Oasis Fm. It’s the best show I’ve ever had,” he said. For the last year or so, he has teamed up with Colin Gibb, who tasted international fame as an original member of the group Black Lace. They perform several times a week with their Original Black Lace Party Show. “Colin’s an absolute pleasure to work with, and a solid pro,” he said. “It’s great fun.” Gordon also has a solo act which keeps him busy as well, and, with his wife Jackie, he loves the life here. “I like the weather, the food, the lifestyle and the fact that people are on holiday,” he said. “I hate it when the island is referred to as The Reef or The Rock. It’s Tenerife, it’s fabulous and I love everything about it!”
WING AND A PRAYER
As a 24-year-old in Portugal, Gordon was spotted playing football with some friends, and was signed up as a semipro by Carcavelos FC. “I played on the right wing and I had no finesse at all,” he admitted. “I was just a speedy runner who crossed the ball, and I was called the sixmillion-dollar man because I was so fast.”

Palms out of luck THERE was a break from league action this week as the quarter-finals of the PJ Electrical & Building Services Cup and Plate competitions took place.
Gaffers A, unbeaten in the league and eyeing another double, faced Palms A who have had a fine season in what should have been a tight contest. To win any cup you need a little luck, and the Palms boys got it in spades. Unfortunately for them, it was bad luck, but that shouldn’t detract from Gaffers’ fine win. They took their chances well, but luck was definitely a factor. The frames were close, Gaffers taking a 3-1 first-set lead, but it could have been either way. The next set was again close, but Gaffers found that extra gear. Bangkok Kev and Neil both had break clearances, and, even though Chris was in fine form for the visitors, the outcome was never in doubt. It was hugely disappointing for the Palms lads, who can now concentrate on finishing second in the league. And it will take a stupendous performance to deny Gaffers A an-
other Cup success. Palms Elite and Terrace Bantams were up against each other again after drawing last week in the league. But this week, it seemed as though Lady Luck was smiling on the home side. Paul struck first for the visitors, but Graeme was then gifted a black, Harry played a fluke and Peter received a present as Sparky potted the black and the white, giving Palms Elite a 3-1 lead. Bantams were kicking themselves for not being four-up, but it was one of those nights. The second session didn’t get any better for them as the score moved swiftly to 6-2. A fightback was needed and Mal offered hope as he took a frame from Peter. But Harry came from behind to beat Sparky, which gave the Elite the seventh frame they needed to advance to the semi-finals. In an all-Second Division Cup match, Palms Rebels were hoping to continue their run against James Hammers C, but the away side started brighter as they raced into a 3-0 lead. The hosts won the final frame of the session but then lost the next two, putting themselves under pressure, But Webby and Mick gave them

Ian took an excellent scalp in beating Macaroni, and it was game-on. But James and Tony dug deep and took the frames that earned James Hammers C victory. In the remaining Cup quarter-final, Division Two Yates Bar were hoping to beat Exiles A, from Division One and had home advantage. The away side made a fine start and soon led 4-1, but Yates slowly got back into the match, cutting the lead after eight frames to 5-3. That soon became 5-4 after Lee beat Blair. Exiles A were rattled, but Ben calmed the nerves with a win against Biggie, and they knew they would have a decider, at least. And that’s the way it went as Dan and Terry took the final two to level at 6-6, and the shock was on. Yates Bar picked Dan for the shoot-out which
seemed a strange choice as he had won just one frame from three. Meanwhile, Tel stepped up for Exiles with two wins from three. They produced a tight, final frame with a place in the semis at stake, and Tel used all his experience to take the frame to guarantee progress. In the Plate competition, there were several giant-killing games being played, one being Hoppys Bar against Phoenix Potters. The home side faced a difficult task because the Potters, having a great season in the top flight, flew into a 4-0 lead. But the home side refused to roll over and fought back with a couple of frames, only for the Potters to move up a gear, reaching six, with a win just one frame away. Hoppys Bar secured another game and hoped the momentum had swung in their favour. But it wasn’t to be, the away side composing themselves to take the next frame and the win. In Los Cristianos it was Dreamers A against Picasso’s, current Division Two leaders who were looking forward to testing themselves against a Division One side in anticipation of promotion. Both teams started well and the away side made it difficult for Dreamers A as early games were traded. The home side, diffi-

And, once there, they were not going to relinquish the lead. They eventually won 8-4 but, to use an old cliché, the score didn’t reflect the game. Terrace Roosters, who are not in great league form faced a tough quarter-final against Rewind Rewired, who have the advantage over them in league games. The home side made a nervy start, but, as they won a couple of games, their confidence started to creep back. Rewired were not making it easy for them, though, but Roosters forged into the lead, and showed grit and determination to stay there. It was a good performance as they got to the seven-frame mark, which gave them the
win. And a semi-final place will, hopefully, help boost their league form. Bluebell B, another team fighting for the Division Two title, also faced top-flight opposition in Treehouse A. The home side, who found out early on just how good the standard of pool is in Division One, soon found themselves behind with a fight on their hands if they were to progress. However, Treehouse A can be unplayable when they are on form, and they showed it as they moved into an unassailable lead. Bluebell B tried, but it just wasn’t their night, so they can now concentrate on the promotion fight. Congratulations to Treehouse A’s Scott Beasley, who will captain the team next season.

It’s maximum madness!
WITH a nod towards this weekend’s much-anticipated EZE group Cup exhibition night, Pas O Nadas A and Phoenix Bar put on their own show of darting excellence, battling out a quality match at Bar El Ritual, in Los Abrigos.
Of course, those involved can’t claim to be of world-class standard, but maybe the recent World Championships were the inspiration for the seven maximums hit during this local derby. Richard and Andy weighed in with two apiece, while Phoenix players Mitch, London and Pod replied with one each, leaving Pas O Nadas to seal the win on the trebles leg.
A whole lot more like that is guaranteed this weekend, I am sure! Sandwiched between those two teams, Scruffy Macs had Tom notching his ninth maximum as his team beat Sandys Reborn, while the Playboys’ Alan fired in his first 180 during a 6-2 defeat at Spear Chuckers. The top two met for the second time in Division 2 in a match Palms Pool Bar really had to win. But The Tavern will be the happier of the two because the night ended with honours even, enabling the San Blas outfit to maintain their 14-point lead. Picassos held the last rubber to inflict defeat on Bar Leones, but Emerald Lounge enjoyed a slightly easier evening as they put six past Pas O Nadas B. Bar 180, however, are on a bit of a charge, their 7-1 win over Nauta Nomads, which included a second maximum from

A week of extremes DOUBLE TROUBLE! WAS it too much celebrating, or a little over confidence? Iberostar Tenerife beat Barcelona for the first time ever on Sunday at their La Laguna home, winning 71-60 in league action. Two days later, they slipped to a surprise 7866 European Champions League defeat at home by Italian club Avelino. The Barcelona victory crushing, in front of 5,146 delirious fans, and it lifted them to third in Spain´s top league at the half-way stage of the season. Tenerife, behind 33-29 at the halfway stage, stepped up a couple of gears in the final two quarters, taking them 20-10 and 22-17. Bogris was the star player on
a day of heroes, topscoring with 16 points. The Avelino game had little bearing on the qualifying places for the next European round of games because both
teams are through. But it was a big scalp for the Italian side, who have now nestled into second place behind Tenerife. The home team were cruising 44-35 midway through, by it was followed by losing quarters, 18-8 and 25-14, which demonstrated that Tenerife will need to be at full strength for the next round of games. And captain Nico Richotti is still out injured. Grigonis top-scored with 14 points, but the second-highest home scorer was Aaron Doornekamp, with just seven. Tenerife would surely have expected more players to post doublefigure totals.
IT was a poor weekend for Tenerife´s two teams in the Spanish Ladies Premier League. But Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife’s 3-0 defeat at Barcelona can at least be shrugged off as a blip against top opposition.
The title-chasing home side were rampant and, for once, Tenerife weren’t given any room to breathe with their attacking style of play. But they still retain fourth spot in the table. Back in Tenerife, Tacuense are still rooted to the foot of the
league following a 1-0 defeat against Santa Teresa in La Laguna. It was little consolation
that they kept the opposition at bay until Estafania scored in the 72nd minute.

Tenerife’s elusive dream
By Colin Kirby
DARE we hope? Dare we dream? CD Tenerife have always been unconventional, losing to poor sides and battering the best. And the current squad are nothing special.
But a 1-0 home win over Real Zaragoza lifted them to seventh position in the league for a few hours. No way should they be promotion candidates, but they are awkward enough to crash the party, just to confound the experts. Another home game on Saturday, against Cordoba (KO 5pm), offers an excellent chance for three more points. The board need to be bold and produce a couple of newcomers before the January window slams. Pawn the silver, search the back of the sofa, or scratch a few lottery tickets … just buy into the crazy dream. Plus, take a chance. Zaragoza arrived, under the guidance of former Tenerife coach Raul Agne, muchfancied because of their Premier Division history. However, they were poor, trying to defend and looking for a late break. But Tenerife found some unlikely heroes. Carlos Ruiz was suspended from central defence so Pep Marti moved his partner Alberto into midfield, where he shone like a

cross that eluded his team-mates. Getting Tenerife’s midfield right has been a tricky task this season. But Alberto showed how versatile he can be by running the show from the middle. His passes were well-chosen and accurate, and he tackled decisively without being reckless. Cristo looked a lot sharper when he set up the best chance of the first half. His square pass took out three defenders, and the ball ended at the feet of incoming Aaron. It looked a certain goal, but the ball caught the underside of the bar and bounced clear.
Zaragoza were there for the taking, Tenerife and took control in the second half, which opened with a glaring home miss. The visitors didn’t know how to change their tactics, even though they were getting nowhere. But. Marti showed Agne how to shake up a game by making a double substitution, with Aitor Sanz and Choco Lozano coming on for Aaron and Cristo. The first raid that followed saw Amath race forward and unleash a fierce shot, but the woodwork came to Real´s rescue again as the ball pinged off
Position
star. The coach also paired Jorge and German as centrebacks, and repaid him with outstanding performances. Best of all, though, was 21-year-old Atletico Madrid loanee Amath, who keeps getting better. His pace frightened the Real defenders and had them back-pedalling. An early home chance was just about blocked by Raton in
the Zaragoza goal, but he looked just as jumpy as his defenders, which encouraged the 9,148 home crowd enormously. Suso put a fair chance wide, but Cristo was not at his best to help the other forwards. Munoz nearly gifted a Tenerife goal with a shoddy back-pass, as Raul Camara and Camille looked to support the attacking cause. But Camara popped up and floated in a promising
the bar. Omar followed off the bench, eager to prove his worth in a month where some fringe players may be moved on to allow new faces. And it did the trick. Tenerife won a corner, Omar floated the ball across and German rose and glanced the ball into the net. There was no way back for Zaragoza, and, even in injury time, Tenerife were still the most dangerous. Cordoba will surely be more adventurous than coach Raul Agne´s limp offering. But with another big crowd behind them, Tenerife can add to their momentum.

Three cheers for Marino By Colin Kirby
CD MARINO, back to their best with a thumping win over UD Telde at home, are now looking to climb back into the promotion play-off spots, starting with the derby game at Buzanada tomorrow (Saturday).
CD Marino 3 CD Telde 0
The Gran Canaria visitors, holding up the Tercera Division table and ready to scrap for vital points, found the blues in determined mood. Saul set the tone with a goal after just two minutes, and Marino kept the pressure on throughout. And just before half-time, quick reactions by Adan punished a silly mistake by the visiting keeper.
He held a Marino shot cleanly, but used a weak throw to bowl the ball out into play. It went straight to Adan, who picked his spot and left the keeper stranded. Telde did well to steady the ship after that, holding firm until the 87th minute, when Armario supplied the ball for Edgar to complete the rout and boost Marino up to fifth place.
