Rajoy Says: EU must stay integrated post-brexit

Will European Parliament have final say? Continued from Front That was on Tuesday, when Rajoy, at a Madrid conference, expressed his fears about Brexit, believing it could possibly damage Spain’s economy. But he was handed what could be perceived as a lifeline when senior MEP Manfred Weber, chairman of the EU’s influential European Party Group (EPP) said the European Parliament “will have the final say on Brexit”. The Spanish leader said: “Brexit is a serious threat. One in five tourists who comes to Spain is British, and close to 17 million Britons visited Spain last year.” The Brexit-related decline of the Pound’s value has also led

to retired British pensioners in Spain worrying about their waning, purchasing power. Officially, over 300,000 Britons reside in Spain. But many do not register, for whatever reason, and estimates suggest that up to one million actually live in the country. Rajoy added: “The United Kingdom is the first destination for Spanish companies’ investment,

and our third commercial partner.” He feels that serious thought must be given to improving the EU so that it is “more cohesive, more effective in its decision-making and with better political ambition”. It means, said Rajoy, that the results of elections in France and Germany later this year, where far-right, euro-sceptic parties are on the rise, would be decisive. “Spain hopes that its two biggest partners will maintain their pro-EU vocation, and their determination to push forward a project which, despite all its imperfections, is the best political initiative the world has seen in centuries: the EU project,” he said. And he claimed that the Supreme Court’s

controversial judgement demonstrated that the European Parliament would be responsible for finalising the process in two years. He was backed up by Weber, who added: “UK Supreme Court ruling is clear: Parliaments must be respected. European Parliament will have the final say on Brexit.” Senior EU diplomats say they have already received assurances from Britain that the Brexit timetable will not slip as a result of the judgement. Weber’s claim, made on Twitter after the Supreme Court ruling, is, apparently, based on the European Parliament’s role in ratifying whatever is agreed by EU nation state

leaders at the EU Council. The UK Supreme Court ruled by eight votes to three that Theresa May must secure an Act of Parliament to start her Brexit talks. The Government, which will introduce a Bill shortly, has vowed to trigger Article 50, the divorce procedure in the EU treaties, before the end of March. Malta’s Deputy Prime Minister and EU minister Louis Grech, whose country hold the EU’s rotating presidency, said: “The UK representative here made it very clear that he is going to prepare a short, legislative bill to go to the parliament. “But he does not foresee any problems to stick to the deadline … before the end of March.”

Hardly a Paradise for frazzled home-owners By Colin Kirby

LAPPING up the sun on the balcony of your Tenerife home should be a pleasure. But it’s not for Martin Zweng and other home owners in Los Diamantes, Los Cristianos.

Their peace has been shattered by the roaring noise of a ventilation fan, mounted on the roof of Hotel Paradise Park, opposite the complex. The problem started over 18 months ago, but despite emails and denuncias of complaint by individuals and the complex management company Universal Properties, to the hotel and Arona Council, residents still have to retreat indoors for a quiet life. Mr Zweng outlined his frustration, saying: “We get it worst on the higher levels of Phase One, which is opposite the fan. It is turned on at different times, day

and night, and gets worse when the wind blows our way. “Other communities near here are also suffering from the noise, which is like a bus climbing a hill. It destroys the use of our balconies and apartments as places of rest and refuge.” Universal Properties has also been frustrated by

the lack of action, a senior administrator pointing out: “We sent several emails to our contact at the hotel, with no response. “So, in 2015, we filled out an official Arona Ayuntamiento complaint form Modelo 005 from their website, and registered it at the Cultural Centre SAC office. “Arona Mayor Jose

Julian Mena Perez invited several of us, including the Vice President of Los Diamantes, and Etelina Liedlhe, of Universal Properties, to a meeting on 21st December that year. “He heard our complaints and said he would get back to us with his findings. But he never has. “We even sent our contact details to the hotel director via a mutual contact, asking him to talk to us. But again, there was no reply.” Meanwhile, the noise is as strong as ever, and even more annoying for residents, who cannot find any authority to whom they can air their genuine complaints. Martin Zweng, who took a decibel reading with a phone app from his balcony, said: “It was between 65 and 70, even with a basic phone app, and it gives a good indication of what we have to put up with. “I complained to the

parent company of the hotel but got no reply, and even sent Paradise Park the website details of a company that makes sound-muffling equipment for all types of ventilation units. In fact, there are a few different solutions the hotel could use.” Hotel Director Bruno Carrera phoned me after I left my details with his staff. He said the fan’s noise was within legal limits, but added that he would be willing to meet with the Los Diamantes community and Universal Properties to reach a solution. Two weeks later, Universal Properties are still awaiting any contact. The Los Diamantes residents are now pressing for legal action against the hotel, using a Santa Cruz lawyer to ensure no clash of interests. The long, summer evenings are awaited eagerly by most people in Tenerife. But unless this issue is resolved soon, they won’t be quite as enjoyable for those in a small corner of Los Cristianos.

Buoyant Spain may slip up on oil prices SPAIN’S inflation rate has, for more than three years, been below the euro-zone average, and even lower than that of Germany, the bloc’s most competitive country.

During this period, the Spanish Government has pushed the line consistently that employment creation in the country has been the result of this low inflation-rate. While it might just be a coincidence, Spain began creating jobs just two months after its national inflation fell below the euro-zone average. Thus, the internal devaluation in Spain allowed the economy to become more competitive within the

euro-zone and to boost exports, which has been a cornerstone of the country’s recovery. But after 39 months of gains in competitiveness, Spain’s December inflation rate jumped to 1.4%,year-on-year, on the back of higher oil prices. That was against a 1.1% rise in the eurozone as a whole, sounding the alarm among economists. To make matters worse, the trend, triggered by rising crude prices, is expected to continue for months. José Domingo Roselló, an analyst with the Flores de Lemus

Institute at the Charles III University of Madrid, said: “The Spanish economy is very dependent on oil, which it uses intensively. “The Consumer Price Index (CPI) fell more when oil prices dropped, and now that crude prices are rising, the CPI has climbed. “This begs the question of whether more competition is needed to bring down prices in energyproduction sectors.” Experts say December’s spike in inflation won’t necessarily have an impact on competitiveness, but they warn

of associated risks. María Jesús Fernández, an economist with the Spanish think-tank Funcas, said: “The CPI is not the goods that we export. There are goods in this basket that are not exported. But it’s true, the rise in CPI could have an effect if it ends up creating pressure to raise wages or boost margins. It is an indirect indicator of competitiveness.” This is what concerns economists: so-called “second-round effects.” While higher oil prices might have a transitory statistical impact on CPI, year-on-year inflation is forecast to go as high as 3% in the first quarter of 2017, putting intense pressure on wages and margins, and placing exports at risk. It could put an end to the moderation which, in the last three years, has allowed Spain to be

Oliver, an economics professor at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. But rising inflation could put the strategy at risk. “The rise in oil prices means transferring costs from importing countries to producers,” he said. “We have to accept that we are poorer.” And Rafael Domenech, an economist with BBVA bank added: “It doesn’t make sense to give in to the temptation to compensate for rising oil prices with higher salaries.” Others stress the need to make Europe the benchmark. And a highly-placed source in the Spanish Government said. “It is not possible to raise wages more than elsewhere in the eurozone. This has to be the limit if we don’t want to go backwards.”

one of the few Western countries, along with Germany, to boost exports. According to data from Eurostat, the EU statistics’ body and the INE, Spain’s national statistics’ institute, by September 2016, the country had recovered all the competitiveness it had lost against Germany since the Euro was introduced. But while Germany has retained its competitiveness by dampening demands for salary increases by reining in inflation, and getting as many people into the workforce as possible, Spain has done so by trimming its workforce drastically and producing more and more, with fewer and fewer workers. Spain resorted to reining in wages only as the crisis became entrenched, said Josep

Hospital emergency services are boosted LA LAGUNA university hospital has opened a short-stay unit within its emergency services department, at a cost of 851,558 euros. The extension work began last June, and, of the 23 extra beds, three are in isolated rooms in an area also featuring a nurses’ station, doctors’

NEW American President Donald Trump had barely got his feet under the White House table before sending a silent message to the country’s Hispanic community, the country’s largest minority.

After announcing a Cabinet with no Latinos in it, the first time this has happened in three decades, his administration team have closed the US Government’s Spanishlanguage accounts on social networks. And nobody has yet been announced to replace the Obama spokesperson for policies or topics relating to the Latino community. At midday last Friday, while the new President

was making his inauguration speech, the White House was changing hands, in more ways than one. Former President Obama’s Twitter account was handed over to Trump, as was the White House website, which soon posted a photograph of the new incumbent. Apart from removing the new government’s links to topics such as climate-change policy, Cuba, or the Iran nuclear deal, the “En Español” option also disappeared. This link provided a route to a Spanishlanguage version of the White House website, and also to topics of interest to the Hispanic community. These included Obama’s executive decisions to regularise the situation of hundreds of thousands of undocumented minors temporarily,

‘We’re relying on our young to save planet’ COSTA Adeje’s 12 Dive Centre has embarked on a series of lectures around schools in the South, hoping to educate children about marine environment.

Members have already enjoyed two successful “missions”, at Callao Learning Centre, thanks to Headmistress Jean Simpson, and Wingate School, courtesy of Headmaster Colin Macrae. The 12 Dive Centre, headed by Alejandro Huitron de Velasco and Mark Vanderhaegen, and backed by team members Toby, Cathy, Bastion and Daniel, have one aim in mind: to make people, especially youngsters, realise the importance of the marine environment in the

Spanish ban through the Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA). Under Obama’s administration, the White House also ran a Spanish-language blog that discussed topics of special interest to the country’s Hispanic community, ranging from immigration to normalising relations with Cuba, or the economic crisis in Puerto Rico. Despite the incoming president’s predilection for Twitter, aside from his official, presidential account, Trump has

kept his personal one, while the White House’s Spanish-language version has been blocked. The last tweet in Spanish, dated 13th January, was sent by the Obama team. During the campaign trail, Trump highlighted immigration as one of the biggest problems facing the United States, pledging to build a wall along the Mexican border and to punish, with highimport tariffs, those US companies which continued to relocate to Mexico

The only time Trump used a Spanish word was during the last presidential debate with Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, when he talked about bad “hombres”, referring to the “dangerous illegals” he promised to deport. Trump also criticised Jeb Bush, one of his rivals for the Republican nomination, for speaking Spanish during the campaign. “We have a country where, if you want to assimilate, you have to speak English,” said Trump during a debate with other Republican hopefuls in September 2015. He added: “I am not the first to say this … this is a country where we speak English, not Spanish.” Eighteen months on, and Trump, now the most powerful man in the world, is keeping his word.

Spain’s export value reaches record high THE Spanish Government this week delivered some positive financial news: the value of exports hit an all-time high, with the trade deficit shrinking by 27.1% between January to November last year.

As imports fell by 0.9% to 250.11bn euros in the period under review, the trade deficit dropped to 16.1bn euros in one of the best years since 1977, beaten only by the 2013 outcome. Last year’s positive performance of Spanish exports contrasted with the Eurozone countries, in which exports increased slightly (0.2%) while, overall in the European Union, exports were down by 0.6%. Exports were up 0.8% in Germany and in Italy (0.7%) but were down in France

(-1.8%) and the UK(-1.5%) with figures far worse for the US (-4%), China (-6.4%) and Japan (-8.5%). Main export improvements came in capital goods and the motor sector, together with food, drink and tobacco. But import growth was also seen in the same sectors. Exports to the EU, amounting to 66.5% of all exports, grew by 4%, while sales to other international countries experienced some falls. But there was good news for Canada, China, Hong Kong and Morocco, which all saw significant and welcome increases. Spain’s trade surplus with the EU stood at 1.71bn euros last November, compared with 554m euros a year earlier. But the trade deficit with non-EU countries increased by 23% over the November 2015 results to nearly 3bn euros.

Middle-seat blues coming to an end AS every traveller knows, the middle seat on a plane is the dreaded one, virtually guaranteeing the uncomfortable prospect of being squeezed between two strangers for several hours. And who gets the armrests?

But the entire dilemma could soon be resolved, thanks to a clever new design for short-haul flights, featuring staggered seating in the shape of “side-slip” seats. The proposed lay-out shows the middle seat positioned further back than the aisle and window seats, as well as being lower and wider. The aisle seat, four inches wider than the average short-haul flight seat and produced by aircraft interior designer Molon Labe, can be slid across the middle seat

to make the aisle wider for boarding. Hank Scott, founder and CEO of America’s Denverbased Molon Labe company, said: “The shoulders of the centre-seat bloke are a good two inches behind the others. And, as humans are usually widest at the shoulders, this has a tremendous effect.” The seats, which have already been put through in-house testing, now await certification from aviation authorities to bring that extra comfort to middle-seat passengers. It comes alongside news from Boeing and Airbus that they have designed two widebody airplanes that could stop jet-lag symptoms. Since jet-lag symptoms set in at around 6,500ft in the air, the new Boeing 787 Dreamliner and the Airbus A350 are designed with plastics in the airframe, allowing the cabin to stay pressurised at 6,000 feet, no matter how high the plane flies.

Funds for Cancer Bus Charity still rolling in

THE Sur Y Sol complex, in Los Cristianos, staged a recent event to raise funds for the Cancer Bus Charity, and collected a whopping 1,577 euros.

Yes, the bus is bought and paid for, and on the road daily, but a total of 36,000 euros is required each year to keep it running. This special motor, paid for by generous people, transports cancer patients free, from here in the South to the North, for hospital treatment, and is invaluable to so many patients in Tenerife. Nikki Howard organised the event, backed by her partner Brendan, along with Ericka and Susie (barmaids), Ann (cake-seller) and Ann Plummer (queen tombolar), plus the acts who appeared, as well as the Sur y Sol Community, who donated lots of the prizes. Happily, the day proved a huge success. Last August, a similar event there raised 666 euros, adding up to a grand total of 2,243 euros for the Cancer Bus Charity in under six months. The afternoon comprised a cake sale, tombola, raffle, organised by Maureen, drinks, guess the amount in the jar and a roll-the-egg challenge (egg-rollers Mike and Gaye). Entertainment was provided by Ged Bolton (Rod Stewart), Paul Oldbury & Paul Foster (The Two Pauls), Johnny Vallon (Neil Diamond) and Ian, the Sticky Fingers comedian! “Without all their help, and all the people who attended, we couldn’t possibly have produced such a fantastic afternoon,” said Nikki.

“We have all been touched by cancer, whether personally, or within our family and/or friends, and know how hard the journey can be. “But by coming together and raising money, we can help patients’ lives be a little easier, knowing they don’t have to worry about transportation.” In fact, Nikki has been through the mill herself. “The Cancer Bus appeal really hits my heart strings because it is invaluable to sufferers in the South, having to travel to the North for treatment,” she said. “I was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2015 and had to undergo radical surgery and gruelling chemotherapy sessions back in the UK. I was a lucky one because I was treated by the best cancer hospital in the world, The Christie, in Manchester, and survived. “And even though I have to take medication for the next 10 years, it’s a small price to pay for your life.” Nikki added: “Having chemotherapy can affect people very differently, and I can’t imagine having to think about travelling such a long way for each session on public transport, so the bus really is a Godsend.” Now, Nikki plans to make the Sol y Sur an annual event, and she hopes to raise even more for the Cancer Bus Charity in 2018 than this year!

But she is not the only Tenerife person anxious to ensure the Cancer Bus keeps rolling along. It was Carol Chappell’s dream, a few years ago, to raise funds to buy a vehicle for that purpose, after driving a neighbour and her daughter up North, both for cancer treatment, daily for weeks. “I soon realised there was a need for a free bus,” she recalled. “Apart from the time involved, and the worry, it was also costly for sufferers to get there and back, so I came up with a plan, spoke about it in Canarian Weekly, and, as soon as I did, the money started rolling in. “And it was dream come true when I had enough funds to pay for the bus, and keep it on the road for a year. Since then, people have continued to contribute, through various fund-raising events, and I am eternally grateful.” But even Carol has been pleasantly surprised this month as more and more cash flowed in. Apart from Nikki’s 1,577-euro donation, Another 500 euros came from Jenny Constable on behalf of the Bay Bounders Golf Society. And a stupendous cheque for 3,170 euros was presented to Carol by Maura Shannon from the proceeds of The Amigos Charity Golf Tournament, in association with The Irish Fiddler, San Eugenio.

WILL THE BANKS FREELY REFUND THE FLOOR CLAUSES WRONGLY CHARGED?

By Mariano Zunino Siri Registered lawyer at the Tenerife Bar Association.

THE ROYAL DECREELAW 1/2017 The government approved on 20th January 2017 the Royal DecreeLaw 1/2017 in relation to the proceeding to refund the floor clauses. In relation to this Royal Decree-Law it might be necessary to recall that neither the Supreme Court judgment of 2013 nor the European Court judgment of December 2016 nullified all the floor clauses (as explained in my previous columns). The Supreme Court ruled that the floor clauses could be considered valid when fulfill all the “special transparency requirements of the contracts signed with customers and

consumers”. What does the judge mean by “special transparency requirements”? Basically that the customers should have been clearly and precisely informed about the consequences of the floor clauses, specially facing the complexity of those clauses. ONE MAN´S MEAT IS ANOTHER MAN´S POISON You can please everybody. The Royal Decree Law does not satisfy everybody and, probably, although the resolution has approved an extra-judicial proceeding to avoid lawsuits against the bank, the majority of the cases will end up in Court. WHAT IS THE EXTRA-JUDICIAL PROCEEDING?: All consumers affected by “floor clause” can claim (free) before their banks the liquidation and devolution of sums wrongly charged out of “clausula suelo” (floor clause). I would like to point

out that the RDL 1/2017 states that “consumer” are those “natural persons” mentioned in article 3 of Consumers Protection Law (Legislative Royal Decree 1/2007), without mentioning the “legal persons” (entities/ companies). And article 3 of Protection Consumer Law includes the “legal persons”. It would have been easier and more recommendable if the RDL 1/2017 just barely said “persons” at the time of remitting to article 3 of Consumers Law in order to avoid misunderstandings. Now we have to wait and see what will be the bank position in relation to these legal persons (always keeping in mind that if the bank rejects the petition based in the fact that the client is a legal person, depending on the case, such client can sue the bank. Back to the extrajudicial proceeding, the bank has the obligation to reply

in favour or against the petition (if the answer is negative, explaining the reasons). If positive, calculating the liquidation and making an offer to the client who, can or cannot accept it. TIME LIMIT: the bank will have one month to set up the actions to start with the proceeding. Despite of this, the consumer does not have to wait one month and enact the extra-judicial proceeding. The bank will be enforced to reply within 3 months. There would be 3 scenarios: 1.The bank rejects the petition or do not reply in 3 months: end of the extrajudicial proceeding and the customer can go to Court (although he can go to Court directly without being necessary to enact the voluntary extrajudicial proceeding). 2. The bank accepts the petition but the client is not happy with the liquidation sum: end of the

extrajudicial proceeding and the customer is free go to Court. 3. The bank accepts the petition and the client is happy with the liquidation: end of the extrajudicial proceeding (no Court case). In any case, if the client does not accept the bank’s offer he will be free to go to Court. He can also go to Court directly, but, depending on the banks attitude facing the lawsuit, the bank may or may not be liable to pay the legal costs. CLIENTS WHO FOUND A POSITION PRIOR TO THE EUROPEAN COURT JUDGMENT: We must bear in mind that after the Supreme Court judgment of May 2013 many clients found a position with the bank in relation to the floor clauses. If these customers think that the agreement does not match with the European Court judgment of December 2016, they can

also take legal proceedings in line with the RDL 1/2017. Note that EVERY CASE will be INDIVIDUALLY studied. BANK THREATS: There are many bank branches that are now threatening their own clients warning them about the consequences of going to Court against the bank, and trying to force them to sign a document, again with dubious clauses. This type of misconduct is not the spirit of the RDL, as it pretends to avoid a huge amount of legal claims, and takes advantage of people, especially elderly people, that may not want to go to Court. Seeing that the extrajudicial proceeding is free, it would be recommended anyway, to ask for legal advice prior to signing any standard form written by the bank, which usually includes a “small print” that may cause problems in the future.

Technology is bowing to Carnival tradition Free cinema classics QUEUES were back in fashion this week in Santa Cruz as the online booking system for Santa Cruz Carnival crashed.

It was all so embarrassing for Tenerife´s biggest international event, and a furious Santa Cruz City Council has vowed legal action against the system providers, Entrees.es. The booking portal seized up at 9am on Monday and was still down at 3pm. That proved far too long, so it was announced that the Recinto Ferial box office for the main events would take the strain. But within hours, tents were springing up outside the box office to ensure prime places when the tickets went on sale today (Friday). 27th. While bemoaning modern technology, the eager party people

could have taken a short walk across the road to wallow in tradition. Former Carnival posters, going back to 1962, are preserved in the form of tiles on the pavement between the Auditorium and the Parque Maritimo swimming complex. Each of the 36 posters comprises 20 tiles, and this walk of fame, created in 1996, is by the site of the old

event venue, a towering temporary creation of bleacher seats, circling a giant stage. Wind, rain, and vertigo would have made it a challenging place to perch, but the Recinto Ferial has taken over and become the home of the big show-piece evenings. The unveiling of the Carnival poster, months in advance, has always been a big

deal. It announces the theme (this year is the Caribbean), sets the tone, and ignites a flurry of costumemaking activity. Although Carnival 2017 has its official inauguration today, Friday, there is a stream of qualifying rounds for the competitions before the main celebrations. Look out for: 22nd Feb - Election of the Carnival Queens 24th Feb - Cabalgata opening parade 28th Feb - Coso Parade, the big afternoon street show 4th March - All-day street carnival Despite the technical problems, tickets for the indoor events sold out quickly. But never fear, most of the wild fun happens in the streets. It’s the people involved, and the countless spectators, who make Santa Cruz Carnival second only to Rio. And even organisers there are looking anxiously over their shoulders!

REMEMBER when the films and characters of the great directors stalked the silver screen? Well, you can delve back in time for a short season of Stanley Kubrick classics at Los Cristianos Cultural Centre. All three films are free, in the original English with Spanish sub-titles, in the Sala Guimera on the first floor, from 7pm. The mighty, American-born director was widely regarded as a giant of the big screen, and, in later years, he moved to the UK and died in St Albans in 1999. The shows start next Friday 3rd February with The Killing, a 1956 story of a race-

track robbery that goes terribly wrong, starring Stirling Heydon. Then, on Friday 17th February, it’s Paths Of Glory, a 1957 antiwar film starring Kirk Douglas. Finally, one of Kubrik´s most famous films, Dr Strangelove or How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb. This 1964 Cold-War political satire stars Peter Sellers at his manic best. Space in the hall is limited, so you are advised to arrive in good time. The short run is part of the Proyecto Cine Sur, so there will, hopefully, be more gems from a golden age to follow.

Calle Valencia is going upmarket THE project to regenerate Costa Adeje’s Calle Valencia, in Torviscas, now underway, will be ongoing throughout the year, according to Adeje Works and Services Councillor Carmen Rosa González Cabrera.

She said the Council had met with local businesses in the zone a number of times “to outline the project details and address any questions or doubts they may have”. She added: “In general, the response has been very positive and we are dealing with an area that is quite old and needs attention to bring it up to Costa Adeje standards.” The work, co-financed by Adeje Council and the Cabildo, is part of the scheme to regenerate tourism spaces. Among other things, it will see the street realigned, with all the elements on one level, improvement of the green spaces and street benches renovated. González Cabrera said: “Experts agree the zone has

a number of problems which need to be addressed, in particular because access to the street from Avenida Ernesto Sarti is a bottleneck, with large vehicles such as buses in the zone. “Furthermore, the irregular parking along the road is adding to the poor image of this stretch.” The Councillor also pointed out that the green areas were

Pine-tree facelift

not well-equipped, and that there were other issues which needed addressing, such as the rubbish hut located there, and the access to Hotel Torviscas. The plans include readjustments by the intersection of Calle Valencia and Calle Ernesto Sarti to improve access for buses and service vehicles. This will improve traffic flow at the bottom of the road,

and the roundabout will be upgraded. There will also be a pathway along the planted space, with plans to build a playground. The rubbish hut will be demolished, to be replaced by a circular building, with its back to the street and employing odour-extractors to avoid public discomfort. The commercial front will be expanded and separated

from the path by a planted section, which will also offer shade. Finally, the streets will also have several installations, including lighting, telecommunications, drainage and sewage networks. And, in line with current legislation, the street will also incorporate access for those with special-mobility needs.

Canaries chief beats drum for the Islands WHILE all around were shivering, the Canary Islands last week took advantage of the cold, snowy front hitting mainland Spain to promote Tenerife as a sunand-beach holiday destination at a major tourism exhibition.

THE Cabildo is collaborating with the National electric grid to reforest several areas of public woodland in La Corona Forestal’s natural park, in Arico.

Thanks to this liaison, 26.97 acres will be replanted with Canarian pine trees. The agreement reflects

the interests of both entities to help protect and restore ecosystems through reforestation projects, and to restore habitats for the conservation of biodiversity. Forest recovery is also part of a restoration project in Arico and Fasnia, which the Cabildo has been developing since 2006. It is helping recover the island’s plant heritage in areas subject to previous, intense agricultural and livestock activity.

Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo even joked with delegates during the inauguration of the Islands stand at FITUR, the International Tourism Exhibition,in Madrid, which finished last Sunday. “Not to make you jealous, but it’s about 20 degrees in the Canaries right now,” he told them with a grin. “So, you all know where you have to go.” Clavijo, surrounded by leaders and mayors of councils from the many Canary Islands’ boroughs, made a powerful statement to the industry to fight for tourism. “It must remain not only the most powerful industry in the Islands, but it must also

increase employment,” he stressed. “We have the opportunity to strengthen our leadership in tourism, and also to continue to grow, and that is an opportunity we must seize.” Clavijo added that “all figures” guarantee that the Canary Islands are global tourism leaders, since their two million inhabitants host millions of tourists annually. “Last year,” he pointed out, “the Islands surpassed previous years with 15 million tourists, which was 11% more than the previous year, with a

16,500million-euro turnover. “And in the Canary Islands, tourism is the main contributor to the States economy.” Clavijo highlighted that the Canary Islands’ tourism growth was “unstoppable” during 2016. “Every year we raise the bar, and overcoming it involves various factors,” he said. Among them, he cited the worrying situation in some international holiday destinations, “which influences people choosing a safe and secure destination, like the Canaries”.

Mannequin graveyard enough to wake the dead!

It’s all going pear-shaped AVOCADOS are the latest target for crop-robbers in Tenerife. The last two years has seen a big increase in the number stolen from farms as widespread as La Orotava, Guimar, La Matanza, and Buenavista del Norte. It is estimated that avocados worth 35,000 euros have been pinched in the last two years. But a fight-back is in progress because a new group, the Association of Avocado Producers, has been formed to share information

and warnings about potential bad apples in their communities. The thieves make a quick profit by selling the avocados quickly at regional markets. But police are now asking those traders selling them to produce invoices to prove where they bought them. This time of year is a particularly busy time for the illegal trade, apart from being a crime. So beware: selling avocados from unknown sources can be a health risk.

Service, with swing ANGLICAN worshippers at their Espiritu Santo Church in Los Gigantes are in for a special treat on Thursday, 16th February.

And, for once, the hymns will take second place. That’s because gospel singers Out Of The Ashes, pioneering husband-and-wife duo Penny Lyon and Kevin Washburn, are appearing during the 10.30am service - at their own request! The Gloucestershire couple are proud to perform “Infectious Blues, Jazz, R&B, Country, Latin and Pop, with Gospel Roots”, and they do not preach. True, they intersperse their songs with stories, interesting tales about their lives, and the spiritual paths they have trodden. But far from being staid,

their music really rocks, and if you can spare the time, do join the regular congregation for a fabulous concert, which is free. And do get there early! The couple’s reputation spreads far and wide. And news travels fast in Tenerife, as proved by the six other gigs they have picked up here since their Los Gigantes concert was made known. Penny says: “Kevin and I have been married for nearly 19 years and we have been performing live music together for most of that time in one way or another.”

She never saw that coming!

A DISCARDED mannequin “graveyard”, in the grounds of an abandoned Lancashire theme park, presents an eerie sight … enough to frighten anyone coming across it, especially children. The former Chorley amusement park, in Camelot, is spread across wasteland and surrounded by woodland. And it still remains home to dozens of old mannequins, some dating back to the Sixties. The theme park shut its doors in 2012, but the land has not yet been redeveloped, and the grounds are still filled with rusting roller-coasters and broken-down rides. A startling mish-mash of male and female figures also lie along the mud and grass, some with limbs missing and decay on the faces and hands, which gives them a sinister look, to say the least. Their broken bodies expose the mannequins’ inside

mechanism, which once allowed them to move and rotate. Some of the spooky figures even remain in place in the theme park’s now-abandoned ghost train, still wearing the tattered remnants of their creepy outfits. Others are still partiallyclothed in medieval costumes as a reminder of the park’s glory days, when it was a popular attraction for families from across the North West. Photographer Andre Govia, who took the haunting pictures, said: “As I walked around the grounds, the dead rides and broken windows gave a melancholy atmosphere to a place that was once full of enjoyment and fun.” The park closed unexpectedly in 2012, the owners leaving many of its rides, attractions and decorations behind. It has been targeted by vandals and arsonists since its closure, and has also become a site that attracts urban explorers, hoping to getting pictures of what has been left behind.

A JAPANESE fortune-teller has been ordered to pay £640,000 to a client she brainwashed into becoming a prostitute, and lived off her earnings for two years.

Presiding Judge Sotaro Tomuro, sitting in Tokyo District Court, ruled that the unnamed seer brainwashed her client into believing she owed her money and then forced her to pay off the debt by becoming a sex worker. Judge Tomuro said: “The fortune-teller fuelled the woman’s fears by leading her to believe that she owed her a lot of money.” She was then said to have persuaded the victim to move into an apartment she owned in 2011, and ordered her to pay for rent and other costs through sex work. The situation continued until 2013. The victim, who sought and received £640,000 in damages, first met the fortune-teller in 2008 and came to depend on her advice. But the psychic sometimes made the woman live on little more than the equivalent of 80 pence a day.

NEWS IN BRIEF Anti-dog-mess campaign

RIDDING the San Miguel streets of dog poo has became a high priority for the Council because previous campaigns, involving leaflets and posters, have proved fruitless.

The issue has become a real concern for the Mayor and his team because it has became the main complaint at every neighbourhood meeting. The Town Hall has already issued numerous fines recently to dog owners, ranging between 150-300 euros. Also, Local Police, who are extremely vigilant, have even incorporated plain-clothed officers to hunt the lawbreaking owners. Unfortunately, areas such as Amarilla Golf’s Pebble Beach seafront seems to have been overlooked. Yet it’s a favoured spot for many dog-walkers, some of whom allow their pets off the lead without supervision. It’s a constant problem, because owners simply ignore warnings from residents that they are breaking the law. And even if they do pick up the mess in a bag, there is no bin for them to put it in, so it’s left by the nearest basura. One resident said: “We’d love to see the police down here occasionally. They’d certainly clean up, with fines galore!”

House fire hurts trio

THREE men were treated by the Emergency Services following a house fire in La Cruz Street, San Miguel, last Sunday evening.

A 26-year-old man, who had a mild anxiety attack, was transferred to hospital, as was a pensioner, 74, who suffered minor burns to his face and scalp. The third man, aged 35, escaped with just a minor hand wound.

School thieves nabbed

POLICE arrested three men, accused of stealing tools from a high school in Granadilla de Abona.

The trio, aged 19, 24 and 29, broke into the school, allegedly, and caused damage to the tune of 3,000 euros, before trying to get away with tools valued at another 3,000 euros. During the break-in, they set off the alarm system, alerting the security guard, who called the police.

Hotel customers up

MORE people checked into hotels in the Canary Islands in December 2016 than they did in the same period the previous year.

The number increased 5.53% to 5,558,231 people, which was 291,572 more than a year ago, according to data released by the National Statistics Institute. Overseas travellers improved from 594,705 to 638,420, and national travellers from 118,739 to 122,206.

Pitiful strays found

A GROUP of Germans tourists in Los Realejos last week found a dozen podencos (hunting dogs) in critical situation. according to sources.

Most of them had no water, some were bleeding and all were extremely malnourished and surrounded by dog bones, such as hips and jaws. A denuncia was filed at the courts and with the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Service (Seprona). Service officers have investigating the origin of the bone remains. But once they arrived on scene two days later, the animals had disappeared. A neighbour assumed that the owners were “tipped off ”. But, since four of the dogs are chipped, he hopes Seprona will trace the people, and the poor podencos.

Training plan for over-30s ADEJE Council has begun an alternative training scheme for 15 people in the over30 age bracket, with no qualifications, to work in the catering industry.

Under the “Restur Adeje” plan, they will work towards gaining certificates in basic restaurant and bar work, with both theoretical and practical training, in an industry that offers many work opportunities in Costa Adeje. Economic Development Councillor Manuel Luis Méndez Martín said: “It’s very important that we provide those seeking work with the right tools and knowledge to enter the thriving labour market here, which is the tourist sector. “We know there is a section of the local population between the ages of 30 and 40 who have few or no qualifications, so it is fundamental that they have the opportunity to acquire professional certificates to assist them in their search for work.” The recently-established Association of Canarian

Tourism Boroughs, (Adeje, Arona, Guía de Isora, San Bartolomé de Tirajana and Mogán), aims to help the jobless benefit from the tourist industry by creating quality employment. “So it is imperative that we offer training and specialisation in the production sector,” added Méndez Martín. The “Restur Adeje” scheme will work to improve the levels of employment among people over 30, who have no professional qualification; nor have completed their studies. They will be trained as waiters and servers, as well as receiving levels of motivation and knowledge of the sector to meet the employment needs of the market place. During their training,

participants will also work at events organised by the Council, and by non-profitmaking organisations raising funds locally for those in need. “Restur Adeje” will be taking part in over 50 events during this period, and the student workers will combine theory and practical sessions in class, and out in the catering sector. Those who complete the course will have earned a certificate in Basic Restaurant/ Bar operations. But they face an intensive, two-month training period, followed by work experience. Students will also take classes in languages, social skills for employment purposes, professional orientation, communication and marketing, etc.

Hat-trick for sniper’s one-in-a-million shot A BRITISH sniper’s astonishing shot-in-a-million, which killed three ISIS terrorists in Iraq with the one bullet, was described as a shot in a million by an SAS spotter with binoculars. The SAS marksman fired one bullet, killing two men instantly, before ricocheting into a third during a November mission in a remote northern village. The rifleman fired his single .338 Lapua Magnum bullet from a L115A sniper rifle from a range of over halfa-mile, just as senior ISIS members prepared to fire shots into a crowd of women and children. A source told The Daily Star Sunday that the shooting happened during a covert SAS intelligence gathering, as the troops monitored Islamic State-controlled areas while Iraqi forces advanced toward Mosul. The SAS squad were tracking the IS members when dozens of women and children tried to flee from the extremists. When the terrorists ordered the civilians to stop, pointing a machine gun at the crowd

from a second-storey window, the SAS team decided they had no choice but to open fire and save the fleeing group. The sniper, whose rifle was fitted with a suppressor to reduce noise, fired his incredible shot immediately. The bullet first struck the man holding the machine gun in the head, then hit a second terrorist in the chest. It passed through his body, ricocheted off a wall and hit the neck of a third man, who was in the same room. “Alongside the sniper was an SAS spotter, who was watching the target through binoculars,” said the source. “The whole incident was over in a flash.” The first two men were killed instantly, added the source, while the third man died after about 30 seconds. Iraqi forces, backed by a US-led coalition, launched a campaign last October to take back Mosul from the hard-line Sunni group, which captured the city in 2014. “No one could quite believe what had happened,” said the source.

The SAS team entered the house following the shooting and confirmed that the three men were dead. They took fingerprints and photos of the scene, before leaving by helicopter. The Ministry of Defence, which refused to discuss the incident, said it did not comment on SAS activity. Islamic State troops detonated explosives in the largest hotel in western Mosul last Friday, in an attempt to destroy it to prevent Iraqi forces from using it as a landing spot or base in their drive to capture the city, said witnesses. The Mosul Hotel, shaped as a step pyramid, appeared to be leaning to one side after the explosions, said two witnesses. The hotel sits alongside the Tigris river that cuts the city into two halves. The explosion occurred as Iraqi forces seemed about to take full control of the eastern side, in their preparations to attack the western bank.

Wheels of fortune can regain fitness ONE in eight people in the UK cannot ride a bike, and of those who can, a fifth haven’t cycled for at least 10 years.

The figures come from the British Heart Foundation, which surveyed 2,000 people about their cycling habits. The charity also discovered that one in

10, who previously had a bike, had forgotten how to get those pedals turning (can’t be that difficult, surely). Also, the average person has not cycled for nine years, and there isn’t a bike in less than two-thirds of households. Despite national heroes like Scotland’s multi-gold-medallist Sir Chris Hoy, a growing network of cycle paths across the country, and the seemingly

Alexis firm shares top bakery award THE 100% Pan y Pastelería bakery, owned by Alexis García y Marlene Hernández in Playa San Juan, has been selected by the Repsol Guide as one of the top three bakeries in Spain. The others are Lluis Pérez, in Palma de Mallorca, and Alicante’s La Crujiente. Back in 2015, 100% Pan y Pastelería took the “Best Pastries” title in the Diario de Avisos-

Dorada Especial 30th Gastronomy Awards. It’s no wonder his bakery is flourishing because Alexis, a thirdgeneration baker, not only thrives on his work, but also on the daily, early mornings to keep the dough rising on time, which is so essential in this world of baked goods. And his loyal clients absolutely love his bread, which is sold to Tenerife hotels and restaurants.

Gemeliers here …at the double

GEMELIERS, Spain´s top boy-band, are bringing their Gracias Tour to Tenerife on 12th March with a concert at La Laguna’s Pabellon Santiago Martin. The Sevilla twins have built a big following since their last appearance in Tenerife, at a small Santa Cruz venue

several years ago. The La Laguna arena holds over 5,000 people and is home to Iberostar Tenerife basketball team, as well as hosting major ice-shows and concerts. Tickets, ranging from 25 euros to 60 euros for the 7pm show are available from www. tomaticket.es

endless people clogging up the roads for drivers, cycling as a hobby seems to be dwindling, says the BHF survey. . One in eight adults still do not know how to ride a bike, while the UK poll, of 2,000plus, uncovered many who have simply let the habit lapse. And, sadly, the average person has not put foot to pedal for nine years. Elizabeth Tack, the heart charity’s

event leader for the incredibly-successful, annual London-toBrighton Bike Ride in June, said: “It’s surprising to learn that while there is a clear appetite for cycling in the UK, there is still a vast amount of you who are not getting on your bikes often enough, or even at all.” She added: “Cycling is a fantastic way of keeping your heart healthy, which is why we’re encouraging

people to dust off their bikes this year and challenge themselves to take on our London to Brighton ride to help support our vital research into heart disease.” It’s not a race for most entrants, but a pleasant, up-hill-anddown-dale Sunday ride and, after all, pushing bicycle pedals provides aerobic exercise, which is good for the heart, brain and blood vessels.

And, as a low-impact form of exercise, it is also much easier on the joints than jogging, as long as you don’t stand on the pedals to help you get up the hills. There is some hope for the lapsed cyclists, because one in eight people surveyed received a bike at Christmas, and 57% of them consider a cycling challenge as a way of getting back into it this year.

A pure-white sight for those sore eyes INCREDIBLE, bizarre scenes from the Sahara Desert showed locals sledging down sand-dunes after the heaviest snowfall there in memory.

Photographers took incredible pictures last Friday of snow, measured at one metre deep, covering the sand in the small Saharan desert area of Ain Sefra. The town saw a sprinkling of snow just before Christmas, when a few flakes settled on the red sand-dunes of the world’s hottest desert for the first time in 37 years. Then, last Friday, the snow fell steadily and got to waist-deep in some parts of Ain Sefra, known as “The Gateway to the Desert”. It caused absolute chaos in the town, with passengers stranded on buses when the roads became slippery and icy. And the sand dunes were transformed into snowcovered hills. The freak weather changed the look of the place, totally, with children making the most

of the freak snowstorm by building snowmen in the desert town and sledging down the white sand-dunes. Photographer Sekkouri Kamel, 38, said: “It started snowing at around 1.30am and got to one metre deep in some places. It’s absolutely incredible to have so much snow.” Apart from the sprinkling before Christmas, snow was last seen in Ain Sefra on 18th February, 1979, when the snow-storm lasted just halfan-hour. Ain Sefra is around 1,000 metres above sea level and surrounded by the Atlas Mountains. The Sahara Desert, covering most of Northern Africa, has gone through shifts in temperature and moisture over the past few hundred thousand years. And although the Sahara is normally extremely dry now, it is expected to become green again in about 15,000 years. This snowfall came after expats, who thought they had left behind the cold British winters when they moved to Spain, were shocked this week when Majorca (-2C) and

Benidorm (-1C) were covered in a blanket of snow, despite the latter’s average for January normally expected to be a balmy 17C. Beaches, pools and promenades were covered with a layer of snow as temperatures dipped down to just 7C in the Costa Blanca. Meanwhile, more bewildered onlookers saw a heavy snowfall in south-east Spain, which cut off several major road routes throughout the region of Valencia, as well as the provinces of Albacete and Cuenca.

Up to 1,600 vehicles were trapped overnight on roads in Valencia, with hundreds of people spending the night in cars and trucks. Also last Friday morning, a 60-kilometre stretch of the A-3 highway, which links the city of Valencia with Madrid, was still impassable in both directions between Villargordo del Cabriel and the town of Chiva, some 30km from Valencia. The Guardia Civil’s traffic unit said that around 400 cars, with around 500 people in them, were trapped over-

Gay clergy might get nod from Church of England THE Church of England is considering plans to ignore the sex lives of gay clergy, in an attempt to avert a growing rift over its treatment of homosexuality.

Under the current system, gay members of the clergy are asked to be celibate, change jobs or seek a promotion to become a bishop when they are ordained. The House of Bishops will this week discuss proposals to overhaul the system, so that homosexuals will not be asked about their private lives when they join the church. But Labour MP Ben Bradshaw, who is in a civil partnership, criticised the policy for shrouding homosexuality in secrecy because, he said, clergy would still be

expected to be celibate. He told the Sunday Times: “It is progress for them to stop asking the celibacy question, but it still leaves the Church of England policy based, essentially, on dishonesty and encourages its clergy to lie.” The move follows three years of debate on homosexuality within the church since same-sex marriage became legal, the

first ceremony taking place in March 2014. The Church, led by Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, still refuses to perform gay marriages, leading to growing rifts. The new proposal comes just a few months after the church alleged that gay clerics had sparked a “witch hunt” in September by alleging that 11 bishops were gay.

It seemed to be a move from gay clerics to put pressure on more than 100 bishops, who met secretly later that month to discuss attitudes to homosexuality. Also in September, the suffragan (junior) Bishop of Grantham revealed that he was gay, in a newspaper interview, and in a celibate, same-sex relationship. It is proposed that gay clergy will not be asked about their sex life, unlike the current system, and the recommendations will be put before the Synod next month. A group of 14 married gay and lesbian clergy, from pressure group Changing Attitudes, also called for a relaxation of Church of England rules on gay relationships. The Synod, the church’s parliament of lay members, also discussed the issue last July, and the debate rages on within the church.

night in the area. Spain’s AEMET meteorological office forecast further snow for today (Friday), with 16 provinces on alert. The worst weather is expected in Castellón and Valencia, which are on red alert, while Almería, Teruel, Cuenca, and Murcia are on orange alert. Another black (or white) spot was the A-31 between Madrid and Alicante, which reopened between Almansa and Albacete, but was cut off in Villena, some 50km inland from Alicante. Between Teruel and Castellón, the A-23 was cut off between Barracas and Viver, while the N-232, between Vallivana and La Pobla de Alcolea, was also blocked. The N-234 was also cut off on the stretch outside Teruel. The General Directorate of Traffic reported that the N-420 was impassable at Torrebaja, as was the N-330 and the N-330A at Casas Altas and Casas Bajas. Snow chains or winter tires were required on the stretch between Talayuelas and Santa Cruz de Moya, in Cuenca province, while the N-344 was cut off between Caudete in Albacete and Font de la Figuera. Early last Friday, authorities boosted emergency services on the A-3. Juan Carlos Moragues, the central government’s delegate to the regional administration of Valencia, said that 179 members of the Military Emergency Unit (UME) and the Guardia Civil had been drafted in hours after 12 snow ploughs were brought in to clear roads, allowing teams to distribute blankets and food to stranded cars. The UME worked with the Red Cross to deliver blankets and hot food to 2,000 people, said Moragues. The UME warned people to remain in their cars and turn their heating on if they were trapped by snow, making sure that their exhaust pipe was not blocked. State railway company RENFE said last Friday morning that all passengers on trains affected by delays on routes between Madrid and the Valencia region on Thursday afternoon and evening had been able to resume their journeys.

Bookworms are thing of the past ONE in 10 UK people does not own a single book, and worrying new research suggests that the nation is now so obsessed with hand-held devices that the average home has more than eight linked to the internet.

And some 45% of all households with children admitted that, typically, they text each other, even when they’re all at home! The younger generation seem to be less bothered about owning literature because the figure for those who do not have any books rises to 20% of people aged between 18 and 24. The study, carried out by insurance company

Aviva, reveals that a staggering 6.5m people in the UK do not own a book. Research published two years ago to coincide with World Book Day revealed that the average homeowner had 158 books inside his/her property. Conversely, the latest data also highlights how typical UK households owns an average of 8.2 electronic devices. This rises to 10.9 for homes with children. And, for those aged 2534, the figure peaks to 11.2 items, including

smartphones, laptops and tablets. The study also reveals how parents use the devices in their homes to punish children if they misbehave. More than one-third of parents admit they have turned off one of their children’s electronic items, simply to discipline them. The new data follows a report by the National Literacy Trust, based on a survey of 18,000 youngsters, which revealed that one-third, numbering 3.8million overall, do not have books of their own.

Dutch police nick ‘diamond thieves’ SEVEN people have been arrested by Dutch military police in Amsterdam and Valencia, suspected of taking part in a multi-millionpound diamond heist nearly 12 years ago.

The police said in a statement that the five men and two women

are in custody, on suspicion of involvement in the armed-robbery and money-laundering affair,. In February 2005, armed robbers hijacked an armoured car at a secure area of Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, escaping with diamonds worth more than £58 million. The seven suspects, all Dutch nationals, were tracked down via an investigation

of new information. The gang, dressed in uniform, forced the car’s drivers out at gunpoint, forcing them to lie on the floor before speeding away. Part of the loot was recovered quickly from a getaway car, but the police say diamonds worth £35 million remained missing. And, despite the thieves being armed, there were no injuries during the heist.

Dodgy group alerted officers immediately

How to create the perfect marriage MOST couples could spend a lifetime trying to work out how to achieve a strong marriage, a long and healthy life … and a good night’s sleep!

But according to new research, one simple thing will make the difference: sharing good news with your partner before going to bed. Researchers found that couples who shared morsels of good news with each other in the evening got more rest, were more intimate, and were far less stressed. These small changes, could, dramatically, reduce their risk of age-related diseases, which are fuelled by anxiety, sleeplessness and inactivity. Couples who shared morsels of good news with each other in the evening got more rest, were more intimate, and were far less stressed, according to a new study of couples in Oregon.

Sarah Arpin, a social psychologist from Gonzaga University, who was involved in the study, said: “This adds to a larger body of literature that supports how important it is to share with your partner when good things happen, as well as to respond positively to the sharing of good news.” The latest research builds on previous studies, showing how important it is for couples to share their worries and stresses to relieve anxiety. This, however, shows that it could be even more important to share even the smallest, positive detail from the last 24 hours - whether it is achieving something at work, making it to the gym, or even having a nice conversation. The research focused on military service couples in Oregon, who can face unique challenges when they return to both the workplace and at home. Arpin and colleagues examined relationships among perceived responsiveness to sharing good news, loneli-

ness, intimacy, and sleep in 162 post-9/11 military couples. “Very few studies have examined daily relationship processes among military couples, who, post-deployment, may be particularly vulnerable to relationship difficulties,” said Arpin. “When you share something good, and the recipient of information is actively happy for you, it heightens the positive experience for both parties. “However, when someone ‘rains on your parade’, it can have negative consequences.” Researchers required couples to be living together for at least six months to participate and, of them, about 20% were unmarried. The time couples were together varied widely, though the average relationship was 12 years. This research will be presented at the 2017 Society for Personality and Social Psychology Annual Convention.

Porn-again passengers! MORE and more train passengers were arrested for watching pornography on smartphones and laptops last year.

In fact, the figure has increased considerably in a year, the police being called out 17 times in 2015 and on 26 occasions last year Police were notified by shocked passengers, who noticed people watching explicit material on their handsets and laptops. British Transport Police have already urged people who feel “uncomfortable or distressed” to contact them if they see passengers watching porn.

A BTP spokesman said: “We are aware that there has been some discussion in the media recently about people watching pornography on public transport, and whether transport groups or the police could anything about this. “If you feel uncomfortable or distressed by someone who is looking at pornography on the railway, we want you to report it to us. “There is various legislation which could, potentially, be used to prosecute this behaviour in some circumstances, including railway byelaws or Section 5 of the Public Order Act, for causing harassment, alarm or distress.” Lawyers claim the

perpetrators could end up behind bars or fined if they are caught viewing the material, which is viewed as an “outrage to public decency”. It is legal to watch porn at home, but it could be classed as an “indictable offence”to watch it in full view of others. A Transport for London spokesman added: “You don’t have to prove that it was a criminal offence or intentional, to report it.” The BTP’s message comes just one month after TV producer Richard Mortiboys was given a community order while watching porn on a train. The 42-year-old was caught by a ticket inspector on board a train from London to Tunbridge Wells, in Kent.

POLICE officers patrolling the Barranco Las Lajas area in Tacoronte noticed a suspicious vehicle, in which there were five occupants wearing caps and balaclavas. They signalled the motor to pull over to identify the occupants, but its lights were turned off abruptly, and it sped off. This sparked a police chase, but the driver drove recklessly, putting other motorists at risk in the opposite lane.

Finally, a collision occurred in Fortaleza Street, enabling police to order them to stop. The rogue driver then began an evasive manoeuvre by reversing, until the vehicle ended up stuck in the mud of a nearby field. Police arrested the occupants, then searched the vehicle, which had been stolen. Inside, they found two crowbars, specialised gloves to break glass, protective knee pads and a knife, as well as various tools.

The fat lady ain’t singing praises for her preacher A PREACHER from Kansas City, who posted a video of an overweight woman being towed in her wheelchair by a pick-up truck, and mocked her online, has begged forgiveness. Pastor Lamond Rushing saw Becky Kittrell hitch her wheelchair to a Toyota Tundra, which pulled her down the street. Mr Rushing, of the Faith Worship Family Centre, filmed the scene and posted it on Facebook, where it was shared more than 11,000 times over the weekend. In the video, Mr Rushing says: “Only in Kansas City. Only in Kansas City. Do y’all see this right here?” Ms Kittrell, who is not on Facebook, learned she was a Kansas City internet eyeopener through her son. Many of the pastor’s comments on the video lampooned Ms Kittrell, while commenters questioned whether Mr Rushing was speaking from the “cyberbully” pulpit. He insisted he did not intend to hurt Ms Kittrell’s feelings. But the mother,

who was “freezing cold and wanted to get home as soon as possible”, was adamant he should have helped her rather than mocked her. Ms Kittrell told TV’s Fox 4 News her power wheelchair was broken and that the temperature in Kansas City was down to seven degrees. “If I get stuck for a period of time and stuff, I get so cold I’ll be like, ‘I have to get home’,” she said. The people who towed her, she added, were being good Samaritans, and saw irony in how the pastor filmed the incident instead of offering to help. Mr Rushing did delete the unkind video, saying he hadn’t noticed the cruelty until he read the section on comments. “I would apologize from the bottom of my heart,” he said. The pastor said he posted the video only because he had not seen anything like it before, and had no intention of hurting the woman. The video was deleted, but not before it was picked up by other video sites, where the mocking continued.

Jobless over-18s still given pocket money

E-fags may get kids hooked on nicotine

BRITAIN’S youngsters, in the over-18 age group, are still receiving weekly pocket money, from more than a million middle-aged parents.

Research by the finance industry showed this week that nearly 50% of parents continue to subsidise their grown-up kids at this stage of their life. The findings indicate that the “boomerang generation” of adult children, who do not leave the family home, or who return there after finishing a university education, relies on the support of mum and dad for more than just a place to live. Researchers drew warnings that some parents may be over-protective of children who, even during a time of low unemployment, should be earning their own money. The survey, carried out for the Loans at Home organisation, said that 42% of parents pay “quite a large chunk” to their adult children. Those parents, forking out to jobless youngsters, comes at a time when official estimates say there are 3.3 million people in their twenties and early thirties, living in the family home rather than on their own, or with a partner or spouse. That adds up to 25% of every Briton in the age group, which tallies with the “boomerang generation” being a product of sky-high housing prices and rents, as well as the shift towards forming long-term relationships, or marrying at a later age.

However, that many “boomerangers” are also content to take money from their parents suggests that they are deeply dependent on their parents. The report said the 42% figure meant a major commitment by parents “considering the majority start giving pocket-money to their children before their eighth birthday”. It added: “Some believe that cutting allowances when children get their first parttime job is a sensible time. But it all depends on the parents’ situation and point of view.” The average level of pocket money paid to a child, revealed the survey, was just over £9 a week. But the subsidy parents hand

to their adult children is likely to be much higher, possibly covering the high costs of travel and going out socially. “It is important to give only what you can afford, and under conditions you are comfortable with,” said the report. Middle-aged and older couples are likely to have benefited from decades of rising property prices, and from generous, occupational pensions now beyond the grasp of many younger employees. A study by the Institute for Fiscal Studies earlier this month said that 75% of everybody born in the Seventies has had, or can expect, an inheritance from his/her parents.

RESEARCHERS in the US have produced a study stating that electronic cigarettes could be getting a generation of teenagers hooked on nicotine.

They claim that youngsters, who never smoke normally, are now starting out with so-called “vaping”, before risking long-term health problems by moving on to regular cigarettes. The survey, by a University of California team, found that the number of schoolchildren smoking both smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes, which vaporise a fluid containing nicotine and a flavouring, has risen between 2011 and 2014. This, say the scientists, suggests that the trendy devices are a gateway to the harmful habit. And although it has been illegal since October 2015 to

When will hospital work restart?

THE South Hospital (El Mojon) committee is seeking an urgent meeting with Canarian Government President Fernando Clavijo and new Minister of Health José Manuel Baltar. Members want to clarify when building work will resume, following a downtools by the company employed, which staged a strike over money. The so-called Platform also wants the President to reaffirm his commitment to making sure the hospital is completed. The Platform will remind Clavijo that he made this commitment during his electoral campaign, when he always maintained that the new hospital would be a priority in his government if he were elected.

Members also demanded a meeting, after learning that former Minister of Health Jesús Morera said in statement that Clavijo considered closing the hospital to reduce costs. A press statement said: “The Platform maintains its position not to get involved in political contexts, and does not wish to make judgements on the former Minister of Health’s statements, or those made by the President, Fernando Clavijo, but thinks an urgent meeting is necessary.” The Platform members report that this situation is serious because the hospital project is again set back. They reiterate that they blame the stoppage on the construction company responsible, and the Ministry of Health, for what

they believe was a regrettable process of awarding the work. On these lines, they intend to re-request responsibilities at the intended meeting. “This new setback will add further delay to the 20 years the construction has accumulated already, added the statement. “At best, we are looking at another year, to which we must add two more of the slow, tedious and regrettable bidding process, whose sole responsibility lies on the Canary Islands Government itself. “On the other hand, a meeting will be called between all the Mayors in the South to make a ‘common front’, and reaffirm that, far from being a struggle between political parties, this is a requirement of all citizens.”

sell e-cigarettes to under-18s in Britain, the wide range of flavours, such as bubblegum and blueberry, make the devices extremely appealing to young people. The report’s authors said youths taking part in their study, who were deemed to have a low risk of smoking cigarettes, may never have developed a regular smoking habit if e-cigarettes did not exist. A growing body of evidence is raising fears for children who use e-cigarettes. The study shows that young smokers who see others vaping are just as likely to crave a cigarette as if they had seen someone smoking. Nicotine-exposure to children still growing can harm memory, attentionspan and emotions, according to the study, published in the journal Paediatrics. The researchers also referred to previous studies on the “gateway” effect, which suggest young people who vape are three times more likely to become smokers a year later. Senior author Dr Stanton Glantz, Professor of Medicine at the University of California, said: “E-cigarettes are encouraging, not discouraging, youth to smoke and to consume nicotine, and are expanding the tobacco market.” Tobacco firms, hit by falling sales of cigarettes, have been branching out into e-cigarettes, which contain a liquid form of nicotine. The figures, from the US and Canada in the latest research, cover a health study of more than 140,000 teenagers, and show that smoking rates are coming down. But between 2011 and 2014, the proportion of children using both cigarettes and e-cigarettes rose from 11.4% 12.2%, driven by the fashion for vaping, which is not what health experts would want to see.

Francis Bacon:

A Brush With Violence

Don't Miss...

Saturday 28 January, BBC2, 21.00

Francis Bacon was the loudest, rudest, drunkest and most sought-after British artist of the 20th century. Twenty-five years after his death his canvases regularly exceed tens of millions at auction. Bacon’s appeal is rooted in his notoriety: a candid image he presented of himself as Roaring Boy, Lord of Misrule, and Conveyor of Artistic Violence. This was true enough, but only part of the truth. He carefully cultivated the façade, protecting the complex and haunted man behind the myth. In this compelling film those who knew him speak freely, some for the first time, to reveal the many mysteries of Francis Bacon.

James Martin’s French Adventure Monday 30th January, ITV1, 15.00 TV chef James Martin is set to star in brand new food travel series on ITV, journeying through France to the locations that inspired his culinary career and paying homage to his culinary hero Keith Floyd. Holidaying and studying in France as a teenager, the country was influential in establishing James’ love for food. Hitting the open road on a journey of nostalgia, the new series follows James as he retraces the memorable TV trip his food hero Keith Floyd once took 30 years ago, while also visiting the places that carved his culinary beginnings. Exploring and sampling the very best in French cuisine, James’ journey starts in Provence and continues onto Perigord, Burgundy, Alsace, Pay Basque and Brittany, all the while stopping to produce his own versions of the iconic dishes he finds on location. Paying homage to his role model, chef Keith Floyd, James travels the length and breadth of the country in Floyd’s very own Citroen 2CV which he owned for 16 years, as he rediscovers the food and the country closest to his and his old friend’s heart. In the first episode, James arrives in Saint-Emilion where he holidayed with his family as a child and started his love affair with food and wine. James visits the hotel and kitchen in Saint-Emilion where he first worked and trained to be chef and also samples and prepares the foods so prominent to the area, including the perfect steak and original macaroons invented in 1620 - always accompanied by his favourite Saint-Emilion wine!

When a body is found in Bramford Mere, a marshland outside of Oxford, everyone assumes they are the remains of Dr Matthew Laxman, an Oxford botanist who mysteriously disappeared near the site five years earlier. The team’s hopes are dashed when Dr de Bryn reveals the body is actually thousands of years old, but Morse and Thursday suspect there may still be clues about the missing botanist when a modern pair of glasses is also found near the body. Picking up where the last investigation left off, the pair set about interviewing the curious residents of nearby Bramford Village who are preparing for the Autumn equinox. Enquiries also lead Morse to the local nuclear power station, Bramford B and Laxman’s mentor, Donald Bagley, who is a key figure in the birth of nuclear science in Britain. With events at the power station shrouded in secrecy, Morse suspects something dark at play.

BBC1, 23:20 In June 2016, 20-year-old Briton Michael Sandford was arrested at a Donald Trump rally after trying to take a police officer’s gun in a bid to shoot the then republican presidential nominee. Michael immediately found himself at the centre of a media storm and at the mercy of America’s notoriously harsh justice system. After pleading guilty, he faced years behind bars. But how did a young middle-class boy from suburban Surrey who suffers from Asperger’s end up thousands of miles from home? And what drove him to attempt to kill one of the most powerful men in the world? This programme follows Michael’s family as they travel to the US for his sentencing, unsure of when they might see him again. Set against the backdrop of Trump’s remarkable rise to the White House, the documentary explores Michael’s complex past while using exclusive eye witness interviews and never-beforeseen archive to piece together the elaborate assassination plot and attempt to find out why he did it.

BBC1, 21.00

Part One. Nikki travels to Mexico to attend the funeral of Luisa, a former intern at the Lyell Centre who was murdered in a carjacking in her native country. Nikki soon stumbles across the post mortem report and realises that the body is not Luisa’s. There’s been some kind of mistake - or is this something more sinister? Assisted by Dr Eva Vasquez and fired up with the idea that Luisa might still be alive, Nikki and Jack trace her last known movements and are led to a farm where a cartel massacre was carried out, where they start to perform makeshift post-mortem examinations. By now, Nikki and Jack are gaining the wrong kind of attention. And when Nikki goes missing, Jack is forced to make decisions that will end in life or death…

BBC2, 21.00 After 200 years under lock and key in the royal inner sanctum, all the letters, diaries and family documents of one of our most important monarchs are finally about to emerge from the vaults. Documentary film-makers, who were granted extensive access to the Royal Archives deep inside Windsor Castle for the first time, have produced a historic film for BBC Two which sheds a fascinating new light on George III, Britain’s longest ever reigning king. In an unprecedented royal project, historians and archivists are preparing all of the King’s and his family’s personal papers - hundreds of thousands of them - for public consumption online. George III may be chiefly remembered for his madness, but this astonishing, unseen collection reveals a pivotal monarch driven - and occasionally driven to distraction - by his duty and his family; a political micro-manager and a restless patron of science and the arts; an obsessive traveller who never left southern England yet toured the world in his mind through emissaries like Captain Cook; a sovereign who was determined to be different.

During his journey, he hopes to find out how our coastline has influenced both the way we work and the way we spend our holidays, and how being an island nation has shaped the Britain we know today. In the first episode, Robson travels to North Devon, a 90-mile stretch of coast that holds fond childhood memories for him. And it’s here that Robson starts his adventures by visiting the popular seaside resort of Ilfracombe, a town that stills attracts thousands of visitors every summer to experience the classic British day out by the sea. Robson says: “There are parts of North Devon that make you feel like you’re stepping back in time, so I’m hoping this journey will help me understand just how and why our love affair with the coast began.” He discovers that the demand of our Victorian ancestors to be beside the seaside was so great that they would often go to extraordinary lengths to access the best places to soak up the sun, including some of the areas privately-owned tidal pools, with the steep cliffs offering the perfect shelter for bathing. However, back then they could only be accessed by boat, so in the 1820s, hundreds of Welsh miners were given the task of carving a network of tunnels through the cliffs, to open the pools up to the public. There, Robson also discovers something called the ‘bathing machine’, a Victorian invention designed to avoid any embarrassing swimwear mishaps whilst changing.

Sicily: The Wonder Of The Mediterranean BBC2, 21.00

Historian Michael Scott begins his journey through Sicily on the slopes of Mt.Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. For the Ancient Greeks the island was a land of gods and monsters - a dangerous and unpredictable world. Michael discovers how 3,000 years ago the Greeks began to settle on Sicily’s east coast, planting their olives and vines and building great city states that soon came to rival even Athens itself. He learns how great battles were fought between the Greeks and the Carthaginians for control of the island and how the Romans made it their first foreign colony, stripping Sicily of its forests to plant vast fields of grain. When Rome fell waves of Barbarian invasions followed, before Sicily was conquered by the Byzantines - the Eastern Roman Empire.

W C cho i c e Further Back In Time For Dinner - The 1910s BBC2, 20.00

This time it’s a decade of feast and famine, as the family enter the turbulent 1910s. At the start of the decade the family’s servant Debbie (pictured) is still doing all the cooking and cleaning. But change is on the horizon as the first world war turns all their lives upside down, bringing freedom and opportunity to Debbie and putting Rochelle back in the kitchen. Never a natural cook, she struggles to feed the family as supplies start to run out - as they did for many families during World War I, and the war puts an end to their previously carefree lives. But the decade has its upsides too: there’s respite from offal with a vegetarian Suffragist dinner, the freedom of a bike ride and an idyllic picnic, and a visit from celebrity chef John Torode - but even he can’t rescue 1918’s fish sausages.

DIY SOS The Big Build BBC1, 21:00

Eckington. Nick Knowles, Laurence Llewellyn-Bowen and hundreds of Worcestershire volunteer builders rescue 17-year-old Antonia Payne-Cheney, who has been kept prisoner in hospital for the last three years by Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a debilitating and rare condition. Until 14 she was a healthy girl, enjoying gymnastics and cheerleading, but now she is hospital bed-bound. Her joints regularly dislocate and she is unable to eat normally, so she is fed through a line directly into her heart. As a result of her complex condition, Antonia will remain in hospital until the necessary home adaptations have been made. To give Antonia the freedom to return home, the ambitious DIY SOS build features a functional sterile space for medical procedures in her own bespoke bedroom, a specially adapted wet room that offers her freedom and dignity and an accessible space for her to socialise with family and her friends.

Hospital BBC2, 21.00

A woman from Nigeria recovers in the hospital after going into premature labour with quadruplets, having fallen ill on a flight. Only three of her babies survived the dangerously premature births and they are now being cared for in Neonatal Intensive Care. She receives a visit from the hospital’s overseas officer Terry, whose job it is to prepare her for a huge bill. Because she is not a British resident, she must pay for the care that she and her babies are receiving. The cost of such specialist care quickly tops £100,000 and looks likely to rise to half a million pounds during their stay. Terry explains that, despite her distressing predicament, it is a legal requirement for the hospital to collect the money the NHS is owed. “We have to start raising invoices on a weekly basis. She has three babies in ICU. So that’s £20,000 a week for each baby, plus her own charges as well. You have to distance yourself emotionally, otherwise you wouldn’t get the job done.” The woman is just one of a number of overseas patients who are receiving life-saving care and from whom the hospital must now try to recoup money. Although emergency treatment given in A&E is free, non-UK residents who are admitted to a ward have to be billed. Terry also needs to charge Sonia, a 56 year-old woman from the Philippines who suffered heart problems while visiting her sister, a UK resident. CardioThoracic surgeon Rex Stanbridge saves her life, but she suffers complications and needs a bed in Intensive Care - costing thousands of pounds per day. In 2015/16 the Trust’s overseas patient charges were £4 million, with Terry’s team managing to collect £1.6 million. Despite carrying a credit card machine to take on-the-spot payments, Terry finds it hard to get many patients to pay up.

Joanna travels to the island of Shikoku to undertake a pilgrimage, visiting a selection of temples to gain a better understanding of Japanese Buddhism. Death In Paradise BBC1, 21.00

The first episode of this two-part special sees the team leave the idyllic Caribbean Shores and head to London in pursuit of suspects connected to a murder committed on Saint Marie. When the captain of a boat, Tom Lewis, fails to return home after the night of a storm, Humphrey and the team conduct a search party. When they find Tom’s body on his boat a mile out to sea, the radar equipment proving that no other vessel came near the boat all night, all evidence points towards him being a tragic casualty of the storm. But Humphrey is convinced there’s more to it. Why would an experienced sailor sail out in the middle of a storm? As Tom and his partner have no connections to the island, apart from to the holidaymakers who chartered his boat for the week, Humphrey struggles to solve this apparently motiveless murder. The discovery of a stray cufflink provides the team with the vital lead they need, pointing them towards a banking company back in London. With Saint Marie’s police reputation on the line and with the Commissioner’s permission, Humphrey, Florence and Dwayne head to London, where they team up with DI Jack Mooney in order to track down the murderer. Meanwhile Dwayne comes face to face with his estranged father and Humphrey must come to terms with Martha’s recent departure from the island.

Spy In The Wild - Mischief BBC1, 20.00 When nobody is around wild animals often get up to mischief among themselves - and some are downright criminal. In this hidden world of animal crime, retribution and antics, the Spy Creatures boldly go where no human would dare. Spy Tropicbird has to duck and dive to survive an aerial attack by aggressive frigate birds as they attempt to steal his fish and Spy Bowerbird becomes a victim of crime to a gang of teenage bowerbirds after he has his own den decorated with jewel cams and bracelet cams to attract the females. Spy Penguin keeps a close eye on an adelie penguin’s colony as they hunker down to avoid a storm, unaware that in their midst is a thieving penguin who is out to steal the stones that make up their own nests. The Spy Creatures also capture cheating animals, including the outlandish Chimpanzees having extra-marital affairs and the meerkat colony who don’t take too kindly towards a philandering female - who is promptly evicted, creating war in the group. Spy Pufferfish is passed between roguish young dolphins as they get high from real pufferfish, plus Lemurs get high by sniffing toxic millipedes. Spy Wolf Pup watches as naughty wolf pups are taught the hard rules of pack life, and Spy Egret joins forces with Boulder Cam with an elephant family at the waterhole, both getting too close for comfort when a boisterous elephant starts having a temper tantrum in the mud.

James’s travels around France take him to picturesque Charente, where he starts his journey in the heart of the Cognac region. Inspired by a visit to a distillery, James uses cognac for his first al fresco cook up. He then follows in the footsteps of the Queen Mother and pays a visit to Chateau Venteuil, home of the de La Rochefoucauld family. In the shadow of their chateau, James meets a miller who still uses traditional methods to make award-winning brioche. Then he creates a superb salad which incorporates some of the region’s best produce, including the brilliant brioche. Back in the UK, James makes a classic French onion soup and pays homage to the patron saint of pastry chefs with a stunning dessert.

The Bafta awardnominated series that lifts the lid on the uncensored drama of life in the playground returns. This time, as a new intake of fascinating five-year-olds arrive for work and play, the programme explores the difference between boys and girls, seeing how they interact with each other, how their sense of gender roles is ingrained at such a young age, and whether there is a marked difference in their behaviour. How will the boys and girls react to identical experiments and stunts when they are tested separately? Will they choose to take the same risks in a penalty shootout? Who will have more tact when they drink salted lemonade that Kate made? And how do boys really think girls run?

Cats Welfare news

Home our adorable pets AREN’T they just gorgeous? Cute, playful, cuddly, inquisitive and adorable. So how come hundreds of abandoned cats and kittens are rescued by Cats Welfare every year?

Many more live a life of misery and danger on the streets. And from Spring, through to late Autumn, literally thousands of kittens are born in Tenerife, many to strays which haven’t been neutered. All too often, though, it is because unthinking owners have simply not bothered to have their cat neutered, and then find themselves with an unplanned, unwanted litter. There are already far too many cats in Tenerife, and not enough homes to go round. At Cats Welfare, we rescue and rehome as many as we can. But to home them all would be an impossible task, made worse by irresponsible owners. Still not convinced? Here are four more reasons to have your cat neutered by your local vet. It prevents diseases Neutering reduces risk of cervical cancer and eliminates ovarian cancer in females and testicular cancer in males. It also reduces the risk of Feline Leukaemia and Feline AIDS in males and females.

outdoors of being injured as they cross roads to mate. Keeps homes cleaner Neutering a cat reduces or eliminates the urge to spray, and if they do, the scent should be much milder than now. Female cats also pass bodily fluids when they go into heat, which is also eliminated. So be responsible and adopt from us rather than buy a kitten, and neuter your kitten at four months old for boys and five months for girls. Adoptions Two best friends are in need of a forever home, preferably together as they love each other so much. Blanca is a stunning, pure-white, fiveyear-old female with powderblue eyes. Ali, her best buddy, is a beautiful two-year-old male tabby. A little outside space, such as a terrace or small garden, would be ample. But they are not wanderers,so they don’t need a large area. They have had everything done: vaccinations, neutering,

Your Who wants a puppy? Emails Live Arico news

Dear Editor, I refer to two Canarian Weekly’s headlines last July and August: “Mobility-scooter joy-riders facing huge police fines” and “Adeje Bans Scooters!” Can you tell me what has happened to the ban? There are several companies still hiring out the double-seated scooters and sticking a blue mobility sign on the front. But they are renting them out to people who are obviously NOT disabled. Are the police issuing fines, and why are the companies still being allowed to rent them out? I have seen several excursion companies advertise them in the San Eugenio area, and scooters being driven by younger people, and, on occasion, with children. Why have a ban if it is not followed up? A few heavy fines for the rental companies and the people renting them would soon stop it. It would be easy for the police on motor-cycles to put an end to this lawbreaking. Regards Pauline Field

K9 Refuge news

Take Zig and Zag! ZIG and Zag had a difficult start in life. As very young puppies, the brother and sister lived on the street with their mum.

Now this happy pair, who’ll be mediumsized when fully-grown, are four months old, friendly and playful, and ready to find their forever homes. They say: “It was a very hard life on the street. We didn’t think we were going to survive until one day, a very kind person saved us and took us to K9 refuge. “We were so tiny and frightened at first as everything was so strange for us, and we had no experience of people. Every day, though, we gained confidence and we are now super-friendly and affectionate. “Our people at K9 are very fond of us and say we are such live-wires, so intelligent and eager to learn. We are even walking well on our leads now. “We like it at K9 and are now making lots of new doggy friends, but the refuge environment isn’t ideal for young pups like us, and we both so want to find our own forever families. “We don’t mind if that’s together or separately. All we want is an opportunity to have a cosy and safe home, where we can grow up to be loving and devoted dogs. “If you would like to meet us, please get in touch with our people at K9, in any of the ways mentioned.

The Swan, Los Cristianos

Gliding by effortlessly IT’S one of the popular family, sports and entertainment eateries in Parque Margarita, Los Cristianos, but we managed to secure a table this week.

We were welcomed among the regulars by owner Anthony and head chef Tim, and duly shown the menu and weekly specials. The latter included the latest special, featuring Pork Belly, Salmon and a Seasonal Vegetable Stroganoff. To start with, we went for the bruschetta, which came with herb tomatoes, garlic and melted cheese on warm, crusty, French bread. Other starter options include sharing platters (chicken goujons, onion rings, wedges, samosas) or Tex Mex Nachos. To avoid any disappointments, we went with the recommended

specials for mains. The salmon came as a chunky, flaky, fish fillet, topped with succulent prawns and a fragrant white-wine-anddill sauce, with Canarian potatoes, sliced carrots and cauliflower on the side. My dining partner went for the Pork Belly; thick and tender juicy slices with crispy crackling, served with buttery, creamy, mashed potatoes and fresh, seasonal vegetables on

the side. And served in rich, flavourful gravy. We washed these down with a glass of house red from The Swan’s collection of fine wines, even though the cocktail menu looked quite tempting. They also serve plenty of other delicious, traditional dishes such as Fish and Chips or Giant Yorkshire pudding beef roast. And although we thought

we wouldn’t have space, we were coaxed into sharing a dessert … a decadent, chocolate-fudge cake, warm, with dairy vanilla ice-cream on the side. Tim, who has been head chef at the Swan for nearly three years, changes the specials every week and can cater for any special request (with advance notice). While chatting to Anthony, we learned that they have live entertainment every

evening from 9pm to midnight, featuring guest singers, and a Sunday quiz from 8-9pm. The kitchen is open from 10am-3pm and 5-8pm MonFri, and 10am-8pm Saturday & Sunday. Reservations are highlyrecommended, and be sure to ask about their extra-special Valentine’s menu, which is coming up soon. Call 602 601 634 for more info or to book in.

By Vanessa Vee THIS week we are taking you to the fun-filled, Port Aventura resort in the south of Barcelona on the Costa Dorada.

It attracts around four million visitors a year, making it the most visited theme park in Spain and the sixth most-visited in Europe! The resort also includes a quartet of 4-star hotels: PortAventura, Caribe, El Paso and Gold River. The park features five theme areas, based on historic civilisations, plus a dedicated area for children, and I will detail each area. Mediterrània is the main entrance area of the park, featuring three rides and several restaurants and shops, reproducing a typical Catalonia coastal town.

Adventure park hits the heights

In this section of the park you have the rollercoaster Furius Baco. which has a top speed of 135km/hr. Other points of interest here are the FiestaAventura when, during the summer months, the lake becomes the site of an amazing fireworks display. It also has a display of floats, representing all the various park areas. Themed as an old western town, the Far West area features many buildings and sculptures. The area boasts nine attractions which makes it the biggest part of the park. It is perfect for those who love the thrillseeking rides. Here you will find The Stampida, which is a wooden roller-coaster and the park’s thirdlargest. We also have the Grand Canyon

Rapids, where you can enjoy a white-water raft adventure along the Grand Canyon. This can also be fun for the people watching because there are plenty of water cannons along the way which can be aimed at those in the boats - prepare to get drenched! The Mexico area is themed exclusively

on the country’s preColumbian times. It features temples, statues and a Great Pyramid which is the entrance to the Gran Teatro Maya, - the park’s biggest show zone. In this area you will also discover the Hurakan Condor ride, which, at an impressive 330ft tall, is one of the

highest in the world. It is operated by a cable lift, which provides a fantastic view of the park before you are sent free falling to the bottom of the ride. A must for adrenalineseekers! Next we come to China, one of the biggest theme lands there. This area includes a wonderful buffet restaurant with a good range of Chinese dishes available. The main path through the area is themed in the same style as the Great Wall of China, giving you a truly authentic feel of the Orient. The Shambhala, Europe’s fastest and highest roller-coaster, can be found in this area. The Polynesian area, much smaller and more laid-back, includes a pirate ship, a 4D cinema and water rides for

young and old alike. Finally we come to the area dedicated to the younger clientele - Sesame Street. It contains 11 attractions, including a rollercoaster, water ride and monorail. I’m sure that some of the big kids around us will enjoy these rides, too! With daily direct flights to Barcelona and something to suit all ages, PortAventura really is the perfect place to take the family for a fun-filled break. Tenerife Sunshine have packages available for 2017 when the park reopens in March with a brand new multi-million attraction, called Ferrari World. Seeing Red in El Medano By Colin Kirby FLAGGING a bit with your New Year pledge to get fit, or simply after a rewarding walk, why not go up in the world and take a stroll up Montaña Roja, the red mountain standing guard the far end of the airport’s runway. At 200 metres high it may look a little daunting, face-on from La Tejita beach. But the walk from El Medano’s side is a gradual rise that will leave you feeling smug for days. I approached this time from the beach promenade of El Medano and across the sand dunes. But you can also start from the main road into the town, where there are some parking spots and a sign to start you off. Either way, the paths converge a little way in and funnel you to the start of the incline. Up close, the soil has a clear, reddish

complexion and is fine and dusty underfoot. I am always pleased to note the bigger stones, which almost

make steps for part of the walk. After about 10 minutes, I could already look back and see the crescent shape

of the beach below. And even with a calima hanging dust in the air, I could make out Granadilla and the wind turbines further up the coast. It’s a popular walk and always busy, I like to imagine I’m a superfit pioneer as I work my way up the track. But that illusion is soon dispelled by mature runners, and people with young children … and even their pet dogs are overtaking me. A nice breeze was growing as I got higher, and the

small lagoon below in the sand caught my eye. It’s actually a salt lake and bird sanctuary, attracting many species passing through Tenerife. The path twists around the mountain as it climbs, so new views come into play, and planes taking off overhead, from the nearby airport, seem close enough to touch. I could almost read the in-flight magazines at one stage. It took me 45 leisurely minutes to reach the top and enjoy a choice of wonderful views. Straight down below is a small, nudist beach, so keep Aunt Agatha away from the binoculars”! The airport and views further up the east coast to Las Galletas were also on offer, through the calima haze. An information board shows all the small volcanic peaks you can pick out, and a small

stone tower can be seen from below. Beyond that is a caged, solar panel that feeds a beacon, and an open, rocky ledge. But be extremely careful if you venture beyond this point. There was a young lady perched on a precarious rock, crosslegged and meditating, and another near the beach side, taking a nap in the sun. It is a very relaxing spot. Well, it was until a blonde bloke, whistling out of tune and clicking his camera, came stomping up the path. Sorry ladies! Walking back down takes slightly less time, but that feeling of achievement hangs around for considerably longer. And the graceful ballet of the kite-surfers is a good encouragement to linger awhile around the promenade bars and restaurants as you gaze up at your new red friend in admiration.

Cutting remarks

By Carl from Robot

By Val Sainsbury

WITHOUT one you’re stuck; if it’s not done well, you will soon know about it, and, if it’s really bad, you’ll be looking at it for a few months.

A MAJOR study suggests that women who remain childless are at far greater risk of suffering an early menopause.

Yes, it’s a bad haircut, which will not only reduce anyone to tears but can cause months of haircuts trying to put it right. So what’s the best way to ensure that your hair gets the best treatment, scissor-wise? It all starts with a good consultation, questions being asked about how you wear your hair, and the way you style it. Your daily haircare routine must also be considered, as well as the time you have to recreate that salon look at home. Don’t jump into a new, suggested style without first considering the maintenance it requires. During your cut, By Carl Pattison

F L A S H I N G forward to spring/ summer for menswear sees a heavy return to the late Seventies, early Eighties, which means denim denim and more denim … but this time, put together in a slightly different way.

Almost-destroyed denim, torn, ripped and slashed sometimes, even treated with bleach, will revive the style worn by Mods and Rockers back in the day. Team up this denim with sections that have been removed to create patchwork-style jeans and jackets. Satin bomber jackets also work well with this new/ retro look. Mix up smart with casual to create your individual style. Fashion designers

watch how the stylist blow-dries your hair and which products he or she uses. Ask questions about how you can reproduce the effect at home … this is your moment to take as much information from your stylist as possible. A good cut should be just that. As you enter again, it should look nearly as good as when you left the salon. If not, it hasn’t been cut properly, or you have left it too long between

cuts. On average, this should be every six to eight weeks (not months as some do) and this will ensure that your cut stays in shape throughout, making it so much easier for you to style at home. These are just a few suggestions to help you find the cut that suits you and your hair. And don’t forget that this all boils down to whether you have a good stylist, who can give you the look you’re after.

A LA MOD

Dsquared have featured this look extensively during London fashion week, and it’s a style most fashion houses have picked up on. This is not a look for every age, but it can be toned down as you pick out key elements to use to create your individual slant on this.

Fashion is about experimenting, being individual and not following the crowd. It’s not suggesting that we all dress like fashion models. All runway fashion ends up in your stores, but more toned down. And this includes menswear, too.

The risk of reaching the menopause before the age of 40 more than doubles among women if they have never been pregnant. And they are 32% more likely to start the menopause between the ages of 40 and 44. Early menopause is known to increase the risk of poor health in later life, putting women at higher risk of heart attacks, strokes, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. Experts are now warning women who have had no children by the age of 35 that they could start the menopause early. And their doctors should put “early preventative strategies and clinical surveillance” in place to reduce their risk of heart disease and other chronic conditions. The menopause, which occurs on average at the age of 51, happens when the body stops producing oestrogen and other sex hormones naturally. But, usually, 2% of women undergo the menopause before turning 40. The new study involved 51,000 women, who had already been through the menopause. It showed that they were more likely to have had

an early menopause if they’d not had children. The researchers, from University College London and the University of Queensland, discovered that women who had never been pregnant were 2.26 times as likely to hit the menopause before the age of 40, as women who had given

birth to two children. They were also 1.32 times as likely to have the menopause before the age of 44. The researchers stressed that the absolute risk remained relatively low, increasing from 2% to about 4.5% for pre-40 menopause and from 7.6% to 10% for pre-44 menopause.

Tots comforted by big cuddles By Val Sainsbury

IT is always distressing to see any baby suffering after he, or she, is born. But it seems a lot worse when we know that the discomfort could have been avoided.

For whatever reason, some mothers either will not, or cannot, stop taking the drugs which have such a devastating effect on their children, even before birth. Vulnerable babies, born addicted to painkillers or heroin, are being soothed through their first difficult weeks by volunteers, whose sole task is simply to cuddle them. Programmes in hospitals and care facilities across the US have been inundated by people keen to offer physical comfort to the infants, as they go through the withdrawal process. Numerous studies have shown the benefits of human, physical contact. And medical staff have found that recruiting volunteers to hold and snuggle up to babies, perhaps singing or whispering to them, has a positive effect on the newborns.

Many babies spend weeks or months in hospital, gradually being weaned off the drugs to which they were exposed in their mothers’ wombs. Sometimes, they are not with their parents, or their mothers are spending many hours daily, attending drugrehabilitation programmes. “These babies need to feel love, human touch and a soft voice to comfort them when they’re in pain,” says Maryann Malloy, a nurse manager for the neo-natal intensive care unit at Einstein Medical Centre in Philadelphia. “It makes the parents feel better knowing that, even when they cannot be here, there is someone to rock and hold their baby. It is a helpless feeling when these babies become inconsolable. “Our cuddlers help so that the babies do not reach that point. They pick them up before the first whimper.” The babies are suffering from Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) as a result of their mothers using prescription painkillers, and drugs, like heroin or methadone. Their symptoms will vary, depending on what drugs the mother was taking. But they can include excessive

crying, fever, irritability, rapid breathing, seizures, sleep problems, trembling, vomiting and sweating. Doctors have noted that having volunteers available to cuddle the babies, reduces the amount of medication they need, and the length of stay in baby units. Some babies have also shown other improvements, such as gaining weight more quickly. Recruiting cuddlers to help look after vulnerable infants

is now a widespread practice in the US. It has been used by some institutions since the Eighties for premature babies, and those born to crack-addicted mothers. However, the problem of babies born with NSA in the States appears to be growing. A 2013 report showed that a greater number of women were using prescribed painkillers during pregnancy, and, also, a general increase in prescription-painkiller

abuse. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, a baby is born with NAS every 25 minutes. The Pennsylvania Health Care Cost Containment Council reported that in its region alone, the rate of new-born hospital stays for substance-abuse problems soared 250% between 2000-2015, when almost 20 out of every 1,000 newborns faced withdrawal issues. Similar programmes for volunteers are run across the US. Philadelphia’s Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has a four-hour training course for its cuddlers. Once vetted and trained, the volunteers put in three-hour supervised shifts. Boston Medical Centre also has a programme called CALM - Cuddling Assists in Lowering Maternal and Infant Stress. So many people have signed up to the Jefferson cuddling programme that its books are now closed to new volunteers until the middle of this year. Those still keen to help are advised to look up shelters for local women and children, which often provide services for mothers battling addiction.

Behind the Mic...

27th January - 2nd February 2017 Interview by Val Sainsbury

Following on from the features with the Oasis Fm presenters, our next round of interviews are with the cast members of The Sound Of Musicals at Showtime, Karting Las Americas. We start today with leading man

Dominic James who plays Tony in the show….

Grease is the word WHO needs London’s Theatreland, when you can pop along to Showtime, in Costa Adeje, to catch up with productions such as The Jersey Boys, Grease, Chicago, Hairspray and Joseph in The Sound of Musicals? Leading cast member Dominic James, born in Guildford, Surrey, spent his childhood in Sidcup, South East London. And, apart from keeping fit on stage, the 43-yearold runs, cycles and goes to the gym, children permitting! With wife and coperformer Tracey, their nine-year-old son Ty, and daughter Samara, six, he thoroughly enjoys a life spent entertaining holiday-makers and residents alike. I asked Dominic when he first realised he had a super voice. “I don’t think I have,” he replied, modestly. “I’m happy with the way I sing, but there’s still a long way to go. “I had voice coaching when I was about 13 at the Doreen Bird College of Performing Arts in London. I went one night a week, and at weekends, but I stopped going so that I could play sport. “Rugby, football, golf you name it, I played it. I was a bit of a sports fiend, and it took over. “Yet the college was a feeder for the West End, and a lot of people went straight from there to audition in London. “After leaving school at 16, I worked for British Telecom. They sent me to Witney Polytechnic in Oxford for two years, to study for a Higher National Diploma in electronic engineering.” After leaving Oxford, he undertook a three-year, electrical apprenticeship

with a firm. “Then I spotted a Club 18-30 ad in a newspaper, asking, ‘Can you sing, dance or act?’ I went for an audition, then worked for them in Greece,” he recalled. “I first came to Tenerife in 1997 on holiday with friends, and went out with one of the entertainers in the hotel. I returned to the UK, but came back a month later to be with her, and stayed!” Unfortunately, his luggage went missing, and it never did arrive. “I ended up with nothing but my jeans, T-shirt, passport and wallet!” he said. “Within a couple of days, I had a job as a hotel entertainer. During my first week I met Tracey, who was performing in her own show. I turned to a friend and said, ‘I’m going to marry her!’” They started going out a few months later, and they’ve been together for 20 years - and married for 12! He sang on the Tenerife circuit before being offered a compering residency at The Pearly Grey hotel for three years, culminating in him winning the award for Best Compere at the 2007 TEAs. “I shouldn’t have even been in that category,” he admitted. “I’ve been nominated twice for Best Male Singer, but never won that one! “Working there with Tracey was absolutely brilliant. Whenever I’ve had a residency job anywhere, we’ve performed together. For most of my time over here, I’ve worked with her.” This multi-talented guy has provided vocal training, been a radio presenter, voice-over artist, worked on cruise ships and been a support

a c t to groups such as The Gipsy Kings, The Gibson Brothers and T-Spoon. He once reached the final in Holland’s equivalent of “Stars in Their Eyes”, and created successful shows such as his Ricky Martin Tribute. It’s little wonder that he’s the hugely-talented performer you see today, with such a wealth of experience! “With my voice coaching, I was taught something that I’ve always remembered, as regards being a singer,” he said. “There are three aspects of performing: your voice, your ability and your confidence. “If any one of these parts of the triangle outweighs the others, then you start to have a problem. If people’s voices are poor, but their confidence and ability is very good, you can’t help but want to watch them. “Or they may have stunning voices but no confidence, personality or ability. The voice alone isn’t enough. But with a mix of all three, you’re on to a winner.” He added: “I audition for acting roles all the time, but you’ve got to look right for that particular part. “It’s bitter-sweet. When you’re a dancer, you want to be a singer, and vice-versa. If you’re trained to act, dance and sing, you’ll lean on one discipline more than the others.” He sings in the hotels, and last year saw him performing on a cruise ship in Russia, and judging contestants in the final of

Oas i s Fm’s annual Tenerife Loves Karaoke competition. “The Sound of Musicals has been going for eight years now,” he said proudly. “We perform three nights a week, Monday-Wednesday, and I’m very happy there. It’s great fun, and we have a good laugh. “To sing at the Royal Albert Hall is at the top of my bucket-list of things I want to do. I sang in a choir at The London Palladium in Joseph when I was 12, so that’s off the list! But I always wanted to be a footballer as a kid. I like Chelsea, but I’m a fan, not a fanatic. “Tenerife may only be a small island, but there’s a lot of talent here. The standard is very high.” For five years, son Ty has attended Estrellas Theatre school, where Tracey teaches. He has appeared in the feature film The Lazarus Project, as well as in several adverts, and the family featured in a Thomas Cook advert last year. “His acting is phenomenal,” said Dominic. “Samara’s a songbird, but is still a bit timid. I’m very proud of them. “I really loved my life in the UK, but Tenerife is a brilliant, safe place for children to grow up.” So, in his own words, how does this talented performer sum up his life? “Happy chappy crack on!”

The Sound Of Musicals is on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 8pm. To book tickets (residents discounts available), please call 669 622 622

We’re Champions… again! IN Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League, it is all over bar the shouting as Gaffers A wrapped up their second successive title with four games to spare. They played host on Tuesday to Terrace Roosters who, despite their poor run of form, gave the home side a stern test and made them work for the points. Gaffers A started well, as usual, and raced into a 5-0 lead. Roosters pulled a frame back, but it was soon 6-1 and the home side sensed victory. Roosters took more frames to make Gaffers A nervy, but unfortunately, they came up short despite a spirited performance and the title was won. Well done Gaffers A, 2017 Direct Telecom Division One Champions! It’s now a race for second place, and Tenerife Hammers A have stolen a march on their rivals after playing two games this week. Up first were Rewind Rewired, and, at the halfway stage, it was 3-3. But Hammers A then put their foot down and took the next four frames to secure the first win. Next was a home game against close rivals Phoenix Potters. It was another close encounter and the Potters fancied their chances. But despite captain Geoff winning three out of three, Hammers A had enough left in the tank to get over the finish line in front and put them firmly in the driving seat to finish second. Rewind Rewired also had a second game, this time against Palms Elite and it followed a similar pattern to their earlier tie as it was 3-3 again at the halfway stage. Rewired took the next two frames to lead and it looked as though they were on course for a win. But Harry, Graeme and Shi had other ideas, putting Palms Elite into a 6-5 lead with one to play. The home team were now clinging on, but Val

did the business against Shammy for them and the points were shared. Palms A, who had hopes of finishing second, may now have to settle for a bronze. They didn’t lose to Gaffers B in a rare Monday-night match, but they dropped points as the hosts took a deserved point. It was a strange contest that left both sides shaking their heads. It’s a good job that the matches are not available to bet on because there would have been in-running carnage. Eight of the frames saw players grab defeat from the jaws of victory in a match that had to be seen to be believed. Palms took a 3-1 lead, which became 3-3 swiftly. Palms reasserted and Gaffers fought back. It was a scrappy contest and the 6-6 scoreline was probably fair. Treehouse A were tipped as possible titlechallengers at the beginning of the season. But they hit a bad run of form and are just in the top half of the table. A home game this week against Rewind A saw them tested again. There was nothing to choose between the teams in the first half of the game with the score poised at 3-3. Then Jay won two frames, Paul taking one between, and Treehouse A were in pole position. Michael rallied briefly for Rewind A before Mark and Scott wrapped the win up for Treehouse A. On Amarilla Golf, it was Terrace Bantams against Gaffers B, and these games are always close. Bantams started well and moved into a 2-0 lead, only for Gaffers B to hit back and level the score. Paul and then Mal restored the home team’s lead, but Graham and Wilson levelled once again and the contest seemed to be heading for a draw. The final session started exactly the same as the previous two, with Mal

and Con again putting the Bantams ahead. This time, though, Gaffers B couldn’t strike back, and, when Sparky beat Troy, the Bantams took the victory. At the bottom of the table, Bluebell A are still trying to avoid relegation. But they will need to start taking points sooner rather than later. They sit four points behind Terrace Roosters but still have 12 points to play for. They hosted Exiles A this week, but, despite playing some good pool, they couldn’t find the frames they needed. The away side put themselves in front and were not in the mood for relinquishing the lead. Bluebell A put up a spirited performance, but it was not enough as they fell short again. In Division Two, the title race is well and truly on with four teams still very much in contention. Picasso’s A have led more or less for the whole season, and they continue to hold top spot after another win

8

this week. But they are having to grind them out. They had a tough home game this week against Hoppys A and were pushed all the way by their opponents. It was a close game and could have gone either way. But Fran motivated her troops and they just about got over the line for the win. But framedifference only is keeping them out in front. James Hammers C, level on points with Picasso’s A, played fellow title-challengers Yates Bar. This promised to be a close game and the pool was of the highest standard, with both teams not giving an inch. But Hammers C, who have been around the leagues long enough, know how to dig deep and win, but they needed all their experience. They took the blacks when they needed to, and got to the finish line first, for a big three points to keep the pressure on Picasso’s A. Bluebell B, also in the mix, have two games

in hand over their rivals. If they were to win those, they would be in top spot. But they are wobbling right now and dropped more points on Tuesday. They were away against Splash Bar, which is never an easy place to go. The two teams were evenly matched, with the first two sessions drawn, so the score was nicely poised at 4-4. Mal gave Bluebell B the lead with the next frame, but Splash hit back with the next two and they had a point. It was again down to Grant to rescue a point for Bluebell B. He is used to this position, though, and did the business again, rolling the black in for the draw to keep his team in the title hunt. With Hoppys A losing this week, Treehouse B managed to move off the bottom of the table. They were away against Exiles B and put in a superb performance, especially as Silencio is never an easy place to go. It was a tight game, but Treehouse B played well and eventually got their just rewards, and three big points. This week sees the Direct Telecom Pool League’s10th annual battle with the original touring Scotland party.

It’s hard to believe that we have already got to this landmark. Over the years, lifelong friendships have been forged, and, though the result doesn’t really matter, battle is fierce. This year, the Jocks have a couple of famous footballers in their ranks. Celtic legends Joe Miller and Frank McAvenie will bring a touch of celebrity to proceedings. The first of three nights of action is on Thursday (2nd Feb) at Palms Sports Bar, Torviscas, play starts at 7pm. Direct Telecom team: 1 Neil (Gaffers A), 2 Kev (Gaffers A), 3 Lee (Gaffers A), 4 Dave (Gaffers A), 5 Wayne (Palms Elite), 6 Graeme (Palms Elite), 7 Wez (Tenerife Hammers A), 8 Barry (Tenerife Hammers A), 9 Paul (Terrace Bantams), 10 Scott (Treehouse A), 11 Paul (Treehouse A), 12 John (Rewind A), 13 Graham (Gaffers B), 14 Rich (Gaffers A), 15 Harry (Gaffers B), 16 Roscoe (Palms A), 17 Chris (Palms A), 18 Tommy (Dreamers), 19 Ian (Palms Rebels), 20 James (James Hammers C). Grabbed by the Scruffs! WITH Division 1 leaders Pas O Nadas A having a well-earned night off, title hopefuls Scruffy Macs took the opportunity to grab top spot with a 6-2 win at Sandys Reborn. Of course, the Nadas have a game in hand, but having already played Scruffy Macs three times, it is in their own hands as we near the final furlong. Phoenix Bar will be hoping that either team slip up. But for now they remain third after taking six points from Ourplace Playboys. Maximums from Jamie and Chris for Exiles were answered with one from Spear Chuckers’ Rob and a 142 check-out by Alan as the visitors cruised to a 6-2 success. And that scoreline was matched by The Pub at home against Gaffers. Only DJ Terry had anything to broadcast, with his fourth 180 of the season for Gaffers, who reported that The

Pub team were in fine form on the night. All is not lost for Gaffers, but a top-three finish now looks a big ask. Elsewhere, Boothen showed no mercy to Palms Sports Bar, taking all eight points from the match, which included a fifth maximum from Sam. Last week, I heaped praise on Division 2 outfit Bar 180, and their “charge” of good results. A case of commenter’s curse? Quite how they managed to lose 7-1 at Marilyns A is anyone’s guess. But there you go, the charge is over! At the summit, The Tavern beat Marilyns B, 6-2, while Palms Pool Bar edged a close 5-3 win over fourth-placed Emerald Lounge. Picassos held the trebles leg to beat Pas O Nadas B narrowly, and the Waterfall flowed to a 7-1 victory over Naughty Nautas. He has been a bit quiet this season, but

Tenerife, by a whisker

JUST a squeak separated Iberostar Tenerife from their hosts Obradoiro in Compostela on Saturday, but the 82-81 win kept the La Laguna team third in Spain´s premier league. Victory was sewn up in the second quarter, which was won 15-25 to give them a 42-37 halftime lead. And that was plenty to ensure they held off a late, home rally. Rodrigo San Miguel took the scoring honours with 18 points, followed closely by Davin White, on 14. Tenerife wrapped

up their European Champions League qualifying group in style on Wednesday with a 98-73 win at Mega Leks, in Belgrade. The visitors took the first three quarters, before easing off at the finish. Grigonis, who headed the scoring with 15 points, was wellsupported by Vazquez and Aaron Doornekamp, both with 11. The draw for the last16 play-offs will hold no fears for Tenerife, who showed in the qualifying stage that they are well at home among the best of European teams.

A quiet revolution grows

By Colin Kirby

T I P - TO E D , and without a fanfare, Tenerife are growing in stature, and this home win had a bumper 11,462 crowd dancing on the rain-soaked terraces.

This was just the start of the second half of the season, but there are so many reasons to be hopeful, and even the ref and a large dose of luck were on Tenerife’s side. Two quality goals scored and another clean-sheet, and the pleasing thing is that there are still obvious areas for improvement. This squad are not being stretched as far as they can be! Coach Pep Marti took the bold decision not to recall experienced, defensive kingpin Carlos Ruiz after his suspension, instead sticking with German and Jorge Saenz. The pair had another impressive game, in particular Jorge, an Under-19 Spain international. The local lad had struggled to realise his true potential, but he is now showing what a class act he is. The 20-year-old, strong, determined, and gaining tactical awareness, was a formidable obstacle for the Cordoba forwards. Amath was again making Usain Bolt look like a dawdler with his tricky runs. He baffled

two Cordoba defenders and tried to beat the keeper at the post, but Kieszek held on to the ball. Good fortune smiled on Tenerife when a raid by the visitors turned the home goalmouth into a pinball zone. Aaron blocked with a mix of head and chest, Camara hooked the ball off the line, and Dani Hernandez tipped a shot away.

Suso made some good openings at the other end, his long, dipping cross landing just beyond the far post with the keeper struggling. He followed up with a ball to Cristo, whose shot clipped the bar and dropped into the relieved keeper’s hands. Cisma tested Tenerife late in the half, but Dani made light work of the save, and it’s his rock-

Tyronne’s bright debut Southern Select 0 CD Tenerife 3 HE comes from arch-rivals Las Palmas but Tyronne, CD Tenerife’s only January transfer window signing to date, made an impressive debut in the 3-0 friendly win over a Southern Select at CD Marino on Wednesday.

The game was part of a charity fund-raiser for the struggling people of Venezuela (affectionately known as the 8th Canary Island). But all eyes and lenses were on the 25-year-old attacking midfielder, who has arrived on loan. Big, mobile, and with a nice touch, he played more of an out-andout attacking role, slotting in nicely with his new team-mates during his 59 minutes on the pitch.

Tenerife brought a large squad and made many changes … and at one stage the tea lady nearly got a runout. The opening goal was a top-corner rocket from Choco Lozano after 36 minutes, followed by a Oscar Gonzalez strike, created by Giovanni after 65 minutes. The young rising star of the B team then scored himself with a cool finish, 11 minutes from time.

steady dependability which inspires his teammates directly ahead of him. A year without a home defeat has bred confidence in the fans, so the second half

was greeted with expectation. Vitolo picked up a booking that will sideline him for the away game tomorrow (Saturday), and he was soon taken off for Aitor Sanz, his logical replacement against Sevilla Atletico. Suso wasn’t conjuring up as many chances as usual, so was time to bring sharp-shooting Choco Lozano into the attack. Amath was still full of tricks and a sliderule pass gave Cristo a great chance. But his shot was wild and never even troubled the keeper. The local

youngster is playing in one of the obvious areas of improvement that can further enhance the squad. Cristo’s punishment for the glaring miss was to be subbed by Omar, but he was given a rousing send-off because the fans know he is worth persevering with. The changes made a big difference. Aaron hit a lovely crossfield pass that took a deflection off a defender and fell nicely to Choco, the Honduran stroking the ball gently into the corner of the net. And, with 14 minutes left, Tenerife had the lead they deserved. They were now rampant and, five minutes later, Aitor picked up a deep ball and fed Amath. His pass went wide to Omar, who rounded the keeper skilfully to kill the game. It was a worthy reward for Omar, a fringe player who always gives his all for the cause when his chance comes. The crowd were in good voice as victory songs filled the air, and “Si se puede” (Yes you can) was the popular chant. There’s a long way to go, but confidence and momentum are good qualities to have on your side. Lost

Rugby rivals hard at work

YOU wait ages for a top British rugby league team to turn up, and then two turn up together this week at Tenerife Top Training (T3) in La Caleta.

Their warm-weather training visits overlapped, so Warrington Wolves and Hull Kingston Rovers set up a training match. The new season is just around the corner, so

getting away from hard, frozen pitches was the perfect tonic for them to sharpen up the reflexes. The 20-minutes-ahalf clash was hardfought, but played in a fine sporting spirit, as Warrington coach Tony Smith took on the referee’s role. The outcome was 3-1 to Wolves but the result was not as important as the work out it gave all the players. Smith drew a lot of satisfaction from Warrington’s 10-day visit, saying: “The

game was a good end to a productive trip. We play in-house training matches, but other teams know our calls and moves, and this gave us plenty of surprises to deal with. “All the training sessions have been testing, but there´s nothing like a game to add a bit of intensity. This is our seventh trip to Tenerife and the first time we have had the chance to play another side from back home. It was too good a

Defeat on the cards Buzanada 1 CD Marino 0

B R A GG I N G rights went to Buzanada in the Tercera Division local derby as visiting Marino fell apart around the half-hour mark.

Firstly, Gerardo netted to make it 1-0, which left plenty of time for Marino to make a comeback. But the ref put the skids under that plan.

A second booking for Coly after 33 minutes left Marino a man short for the remainder of the game, and they just couldn’t get back on even terms. It won’t be remembered as the best day out for the Las Americas side, and even back-up keeper Petar was booked without taking part in the game! The only consolation was that Marino still sit in fifth position, well in touch with the playoff places.

But their poor week continued with a 3-1 defeat in La Palma against Los Llanos in the second leg of the Copa Heliodoro quarter-final. After losing the home leg 2-1, it was always going to be a tough task for them to turn it around. This Sunday, there’s a home league game as CD Marino welcome UD Vera for a noon kick-off. And they’ll be looking to make inroads into the leading group above them.

coincidence to pass by.” Hull KR have a different set of challenges to face in the coming season. Warrington finished second in last year’s Superleague, but Hull KR dropped into the Championship after relegation. Jamie Peacock, Hull’s Head of Rugby, valued their week’s visit. “It’s a good chance to gel the team together, and not just on the pitch,” he said. “They spend a lot of time together out here with no distractions.

It’s a big season for us as we look to bounce back. Our base, at Gran Hotel Callao Sport, has good facilities, and T3 is a fabulous place to train.” Tim Sheens, Hull’s newly-installed coach, was keen to test his players. “We started pre-season work just before Christmas, and coming here gives me a chance to look at all aspects of our game, as well as learning the players strengths and weaknesses,” he said. “Training twice a day

in this heat pushes the players. The ground is faster and harder, and will help to build them up, ready for league action.” There was plenty of chat and banter between the two sets of players after the game, plus the odd, strategically-placed ice-pack or two. And when the teams posed for group photos, it was a nice touch for them to invite the young players of Nandu Rugby Club to join them.

Ladies football

Real tactical battle looms AFTER a 3-0 away defeat in their last game two weeks ago, Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife are looking forward to being back on home soil as they welcome Real Sociedad to their El Medano ground at 11am on Sunday.

Real are below Tenerife in the league, but coach Toni Ayala is wary of their similar style of play and tight defensive form. But overall, he is happy at how the season is progressing. “We are in fifth place and closed the first half of the season with four more points than the last campaign,” he said. “A win over Real will keep us on track for

where we want to be at the end of the season.” That objective is a place in the European Cup, and competing in Spain´s top league has brought the Tenerife players on in leaps and bounds. Crowds have been good this season, nudging the 1,000 mark regularly, so why not take in a match? Entry on Sunday is just eight euros.
