Ex-Mayor evades jail again Continued from Front The ex-mayor, in office for 10 years and an important member of the Coalición Canarias party then, faced being jailed for two years, with a 20-year ban from holding a public office. In fact, he merely received a 17-year public-office ban (8½ years for continued crime against urban planning, and a further 8½ years for continual abuse of administration authority). That’s because magistrates believed his case was not sufficiently proved. But Reverón has other, unrelated cases pending in the same Provincial Court of Santa Cruz. Prosecutors are calling for a

three-year prison sentence, a 20,000-euro fine and a 35-year ban from holding a public office. The Court also tried another 12 people, including politicians, municipal technicians and architects, and it took magistrates nine months to deliver judgement, given the “complex web” of fraudulent actions, and a mixture of bribery and influence of power. The sentence was finally issued last Thursday, despite undue delays, since the prosecution’s denuncia dated back to 2007. One of the main pieces of evidence, which helped magistrate Nelson Díaz Frías

investigate the Arona case, was a recording of Basque constructor Jose Ramón Ansorena and his son, which contributed to the legal investigation. Convicted developer Arsenio Zamora is heard asking for 45 million pesetas (270,000 euros), in two payments, to process licences which would allow 206 houses to be built on a plot of land in Costa del Silencio. But both father and son refused to pay the bribe and the homes were never built. The plaintiff’s attorney representing them asked for compensation for moral damage caused, but the Court ruled it out.

Alayón: I fought corruption!

JUAN José Alayón, known as Cheché, who was Arona’s Parks and Gardens Councillor between 2003-2007, was among those found guilty by the Provincial Court.

But he believes his sentence was unjust. “If there was anyone during those years that fought against corruption in the Council, it was me,” he insisted. “But this sentence has mixed up everything and we have all been punished equally.” He added: “No one acted illegally in front of me, But behind closed doors, I do not know what happened.” The judicial process of the Arona case, which lasted nine years (January 2007 to January 2017), increased the gap between politicians and technicians, who shared jobs at Arona Council in the late Nineties and the early years from 2000. “The technicians did what they wanted, and that was known all over Arona,” recalled Alayón, pointing to

Governing Board members, who have been given the same 17-year ban from public office. But he did say that “Berto” (González Reverón) and Barroso would not appeal.

The Cabildo has 100% control of nine companies, five of which showed losses. The biggest of these was the Santa Cruz Auditorium, which lost 3,284,270m euros. The other companies were:

Troya beaches hit by E.coli bacteria again

Schools to strike over education reform bid SCHOOLS across Spain will be on strike on Thursday, 9th March, in an attempt to pressure the Government into scrapping the unpopular education reform, known as the LOMCE.

THE Troya beaches, which span Arona and Adeje, could be closed to the public again because of a fresh complaint about raw sewage being seen there.

Cabildo Councillor Julio Concepción has presented a report to the Costas, which is responsible for all Spanish beaches. He warns of the presence of E.coli, the same bacteria found on the beaches last summer, because of a problem in the Arona-Adeje

Wastewater Treatment Plant. The bacteria are found in the environment, foods, and intestines of people and animals. Cllr Concepción said: “Pollution levels remain high in most of the coast, and faeces have been collected floating in the sea by a group of surfers, who received medical treatment because of the reaction of their skin to the high levels of bacteria. And the problem is permanent.” He has asked the Insular Council of Waters to carry out an urgent performance review of the Arona-Adeje Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Supposedly, it gives them a “clear plan” for their “Education Pact”, which was discussed recently. Protests will be staged by the country’s major unions, the CCOO, UGT and CGT, and teaching union STES, together with the Student Front, Students in Movement, the Union of Students and FAEST, along with the State Confederation of PTAs and the Pedagogical Renewal platform. The PTA Confederation

CEAPA wants the Government to withdraw what it calls an “unacceptable” appeal to the Constitutional Court against the implanting of legislation, aimed at halting the application of the education reform. The LOMCE, introduced by former Education Minister José Ignacio Wert, has been criticised by schools throughout the country as a method of “weeding out” weaker students at a very early age. They say that, effectively, it will split the country’s young adults into “top academic hopefuls” and “factory fodder”. And that, says schools, condemns late blossomers, or highly-intelligent pupils unable to flourish under the mainstream school system, to a life of low-qualified menial jobs. Yet, with the right help, they

might have been capable of going to university. The reform has also been slammed as rigid, right-wing, pro-Catholic, and memorybased strongly, with no room for critical, thinking skills, And add protesters, exam grades will take priority over the quality of coursework and other aspects of the education system. Schools were ordered to change their syllabus, teaching methods and setbooks to incorporate the LOMCE by September 2016. But most regions refused to do so, saying there hadn’t been time. But at the same time, education funding cuts have led to much larger classroom sizes, and teachers being made redundant! The CEAPA, which says Spain’s schools need a solid and consistent approach to education immediately, has also criticised the European Union’s orders for the national government to cut funding in the system even further in a bid to meet its debt targets. Yet education at all levels, it insists, needs plenty more money rather than less.

SPANISH ECONOMY REALLY THRIVING THE Spanish economy last year outperformed all forecasts made by expert organisations, which had been expecting a slowdown in the early part of the year.

Instead, the economy grew by 3.2%, at the same pace as 2015, according to preliminary figures released on Monday by the National Statistics Institute (INE). From September to December, GDP growth was 0.7%, which was identical to the previous quarter, but lower than the previous six quarters. The data suggests a mild slowdown during the second half of the year. The new numbers also show that the Spanish economy has grown for the third year in a row. And in that time, in real terms, it has recovered around 80% of what it lost during the crisis. Factor in the effects of inflation and Spanish Gross Domestic Product has gained back practically 95% of what it lost. In 2016, tourism receipts also shattered all previous records. “Looking at these numbers, we can assume

that we will go back to precrisis activity levels this year,” said José Domingo Roselló, an analyst at Madrid-based economic research institute Flores de Lemus. The data appear to confirm earlier statements by Luis de Guindos, the Government’s Economy Minister, that GDP will go back to 2008 levels by the middle of this year. But there are differences in the make-up of today’s GDP, compared with nearly a decade ago. For one thing, there are many more exports now and there is less employment. There are currently 18.5 million people in employment, 2.25m fewer than the historical high, according to workforce survey Encuesta de Población Activa (EPA). There is also less investment than back when construction was the driving force of growth. As for salaries, only half the 2008 wage bill has been restored. De Guindos says GDP will go back to those 2008 levels by mid-2017. So the GDP recovery is based mostly on the export of goods and services, which have shot up from around 25% to 33% of GDP. This is on the back of a

competitive devaluation, a search for new markets and the recent European economy recovery. Compared with 2009, export of goods grew by around 90bn and hit historical highs, despite a global slowdown in trade. By comparison, exports represent 12% of GDP in the US, 18% in Japan, 22% in China and 45% in Germany. Receipts from tourism also shattered all previous records last year, while the sale of non-tourism-related services grew even more. And, despite the gloomy forecasts, there was no slowdown, thanks to lower oil prices, exceptional tourism figures, driven by serious risks to travellers in other popular destinations, and by a particularly weak euro to the dollar. Also, the European Central Bank policy left interest rates at the lowest levels in memory, reducing t h e financial load of variable-rate mortgages and

making it easier for borrowers to shake off debt. Meanwhile, rather than shaving 20bn euros off the public deficit, as per Brussels’ instructions, Spanish Government agencies actually increased their spending slightly, while reducing taxes to the tune of 5bn euros. This has allowed the economy to grow much more than expected. Job creation is also on the rise, even if they are precarious jobs. But low salaries encourage greater consumer-spending than having a situation in which people are not earning at all. The export of goods and services has shot up from around 25% to 33% of GDP on the back of a competitive devaluation. And preliminary 2017 figures show that economic output is doubling, and even tripling, growth

figures in most other EU member states. However, this is not expected to keep up. “Most forecasts are talking about a slowdown to somewhere around 2.5%,” said José Ramón Díez Guijarro, chief economist of Bankia’s analysis services. “This is due to more adverse external conditions, to which other changing factors must be added, such as the behaviour of inflation, which could affect competitiveness, or financing conditions.”

Rothschild denies all knowledge of ‘fraud’ Tourism BARON David de Rothschild has responded to an Alicante court regarding an expat fraud case in Spain.

The multi-millionaire banking scion has denied any knowledge of a complex, expat fraud case in Spain, which involved more 100 pensioners, mostly British, lose millions in an equityrelease scheme. He has written to an Alicante court over the alleged involvement of NMR Rothschild (NMR Rothschilds & Sons), a banking house, in the misselling of Credit Select Series Mortgage Loans worth 70m euros. His action follows the efforts of Marbella lawyer Antonio Flores, who has helping dozens of British pensioners mount a class action against the Rothschild enterprise. They believe that it led them to invest in the product, billed as a legal way to evade Spanish inheritance tax. In

fact, it left them in danger of losing their homes. In a 17-page response sent to the court by the French aristocrat, Rothschild insisted that he “did not know” about the product, which was sold to some 130 parties, with mortgages worth around 600,000 euros. “I was not personally involved in the contracts”, he wrote in French. “I have been told by NMR that it has never proposed investment funds linked to the contracts of those loans.” Rothschild was adamant:

“Loans were given to individuals who had a property that was not subject to any mortgage, who claimed to have other assets and who were expatriates, but that mortgage was never to reduce the inheritance tax.” He also denied “personally knowing” Stephen Dewsnip, named as one of the main players in the scheme in Spain. But Lawyer Flores, who has been working on the case since 2015, has refuted Rothschild’s testimony. “I find it shocking that the man, who’s a boss in a bank, doesn’t know about what was going on with one of his companies in Spain, or anything about the product being sold there,” he said. “It’s just not believable to me. “The document now has to be officially translated into Spanish for the court before judges there can read his reply.” He added: “They will then decide whether to press ahead with the charge and conduct a proper

trial, or drop the matter.” The Rothschild group insisted that Baron Rothschild had “no personal involvement” in the case. “At the request of the Spanish authorities, and in accordance with standard disclosure requirements, Baron David de Rothschild provided information to the French authorities in relation to Rothschild’s Spanish mortgage book,” it said. “At no time has Baron David de Rothschild had any personal involvement in the provision of mortgages in Spain.” A spokesman added: “Rothschild provided a small number of mortgages that were secured on properties in Spain. The money was used by the customers to fund their own investments. “The customers were separately advised on their investments by independent financial advisers. “Rothschild is not responsible for that investment advice, and has, at all times, acted in compliance with its legal and regulatory obligations.”

THE Canary Islands registered a total of 13,297,883 foreign tourists in 2016, which was 13.2% up on the previous year.

The number was achieved after the Canaries welcomed a further 1,250,421 tourists in December, an 18.6% increase against the coinciding month in 2015. The figures, released by the National Institute of Statistics, also showed that the December influx came mainly from the UK (36%) and Germany (19.1%). The Canaries was the main destination chosen by tourists travelling to Spain during that month (31.4%), followed by Catalonia (24%) and Andalusia (12.5 %) Overall, Spain received four million international tourists in December, an advance of 13.3% on the same month last year. That helped take the 2016 total to 75.6 million visitors, 10.3% more than in 2015.

Traffico to place 60 Firefighters new speed cameras protest march FIREFIGHTERS will stage a protest march through the streets of Santa Cruz on Thursday and Friday … depending on the permit they are given by the Government.

Jaime Mujir, secretary for the workers’ commission, said the plan was to end the protest in front of the Cabildo headquarters. “That’s because they have to hear the firefighter’s complaints,” he said. It will start either in the Weyler Square or the Duck Square at noon, and, added Mujir: “We will have the support of firefighters coming from Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. “We want to show the most absolute rejection of the shamelessness of this Cabildo, taking advantage of volunteers to perform a public service, which should be professional.” The union representative

TENERIFE currently has 32 speed cameras to ensure road-safety, according to Tráfico, the Guardia Civil’s traffic police. Among them are the fixed

ones, located in pairs on the South and North motorway, and on the Ronda road in La Laguna And the number will increase soon because Juan Ignacio Zoido, the Interior Minister, announced on Wednesday that 60 new surveillance

and speed cameras would be installed on dangerous sections throughout the island. He also said his department would be launching 15 measures “urgently” to help reduce last year’s accident ratio.

said they also had another meeting next Friday, with the Insular Director of Emergencies, to whom they will again reiterate “the dangers and insecurities on the island, and that firefighters are not given coverage”. Mujir insisted: “That is foolish and reckless on the Cabildo’s behalf.” But he pointed out that, perhaps, José Antonio Valbuena, Insular Councillor of Security, should attend these meetings because “he lied to us. “During the parliament session in December, he was asked about the 1,200,000 euros for volunteer firefighters in La Laguna and he said he was retiring”. The group had already held a meeting on Monday, after they announced they were going on strike, which was, in his opinion, “negative and without results”. Mujir, who criticised the Cabildo’s promises “for the future”, added: “We want something tangible,” said Jaime

Schoolkids trapped on way to ski resort

Candelaria lights up with candles galore THE spectacular celebrations in honour of the Virgin of Candelaria, patron saint of the Canary Islands, took place on Wednesday.

At 7.30pm, the lights were all extinguished, plunging the town into darkness as the procession of worshippers, more than 5,000, (nearly 7,000 according to the Local Police) all carrying candles, made its way through the streets to the Basilica Church for a special service. It is regarded as one of the most exciting Tenerife processions of all, as a prelude to the actual feast day. That was celebrated

yesterday (Thursday) with the Bishops sermon and the Patron Saint being carried around the Town Square. February’s festivities are celebrated with more

emphasis than those held in August, because they have a higher religious component, whose roots tie in with five centuries of faith and belief in the Virgin.

COACHES carrying 150 schoolchildren were trapped for more than two hours on the road to the ski resorts in Teruel, in north-east Spain, following thick snow on Saturday night.

Three buses were taking the group on a school trip to the ski station in Valdelinares (pictured), despite weather warnings being issued for the

whole of the Gúdar district, in the south of the Teruel province. At around 7pm, snowdrifts meant the coaches were unable to proceed. They were stranded for more than two hours, until snow ploughs cleared the roads enough for them to reach the resort. Milder conditions appeared the following day(Sunday), the first day of the children’s skiing break, so they were able to enjoy their time on the slopes.

Illegal pineapples are seized in store

OFFICIALS from the Canarian Government’s Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Water, have seized 316kg of tropical pineapples, which have been imported illegally. They discovered the fruit in an Adeje business, which was also selling it wholesale. But under plant-sanitation regulations, it is illegal to import this fruit into the Canary Islands. The goods have been retained in a sealed container in cold storage, and an investigation to prove the origin of the produce is under way. If the Ministry verifies that the fruit is not from the Canary Islands, the importer faces an economic penalty.

Refugees are

A TOTAL of 55 refugees arrived in Spain from Greece last week under the European Union relocation programme, set up to tackle the humanitarian consequences of the Syrian war. The refugees, 36 Syrians and 19 Iranians, arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport. There were 22 men, 11 women and 22 children, who have been relocated to various areas: Almeria (4), Malaga (4), Huesca (7), Palencia (5), Tarragona (14), Castellon (17), Murcia (2) and Caceres (2). Spain has now taken in a total of 1,034 applicants for international protection, 745 under the relocation programme and 289 under the resettlement banner. They are guaranteed lodging, meals, legal advice, psychological assistance, social care and advice. They will also be accompanied to education centres, public-health and social centres to receive language-learning and basic social skills, cultural activities and economic aid.

Owners in bid to save 30-year beach kiosks SOME 200 protesters took to the streets of Las Teresitas on Sunday, urging Santa Cruz Town Hall not to close the nine kiosks installed along the beach front. The owners say they have been open for more than 30 years,

and have documentation to show they were given Town Hall permission. Several people leading the procession carried banners that demanded regularisation of these premises. Others wore T-shirts which warned that more than 300 people would be unemployed if they closed the kiosks. Santa Cruz Mayor José

Manuel Bermúdez promised kiosk-owners that he would study the feasibility of granting them provisional licences, until the “Special” beach-front plans were approved. This action was actually proposed by the owners during a Council meeting. But they fear eventual closure for their kiosks, so they want to

keep negotiations going until there is a definitive solution. The Council, which has reminded owners that this matter is not solely a political decision, says it must comply with strict rules and legal regulations. Its Councillors stress they never set out to harm anyone, and are simply complying with the court’s decisions.

Pick-pockets pinched Young migrant tragedy lifeless body of a in Santiago del Teide THE boy aged 6-7, believed to be the child of a migrant trying to get to Europe, has washed up on a southern Spanish beach.

TWO men, aged 24 and 29, have been arrested by the Guardia Civil for continual pick-pocketing, and a third is under investigation for theft. The trio, who looked suspicious, were surprised by the officers as they walked behind tourists in Santiago del Teide. And when the officers approached the men, they looked nervous, and one

of them threw a wallet on the ground. The wallet, containing 210 euros and various documents, was subsequently claimed by one of the tourists the trio were trailing. The officers took the three men to the police station for identification and to be charged with a crime of theft, and the victims proceeded to file the corresponding denuncia.

It was found in the Barbate municipality of Cadiz, on Spain’s southern tip, and a Government spokesman for the region said: “The hypothesis is that he was a migrant.” He added that the bodies of other people believed to be migrants, travelling from north Africa, had washed up on the coast further east more than two weeks earlier. While the focus has often been on the migrants and refugees heading to Europe

via Turkey, Greece and Italy, a smaller number also head for Spain. The country, has two enclaves in north Africa, Ceuta and Melilla, which, despite being surrounded by high barriers, are stormed regularly by migrants. Others, mostly from subSaharan Africa, take to rickety boats to try to cross the narrow stretch of sea between Spain’s southern tip and Morocco. According to the International Organisation for Migration, 13,246 migrants arrived in Spain last year, more than 8,100 of whom came by sea. This compares with more than 181,000 and close to 177,000 people respectively, who arrived in Italy and Greece.

Injured athletes moved to a hospital in London BRITISH sprinters James Ellington and Nigel Levine have been flown back to London for more hospital treatment following their life-threatening motorbike crash.

The pair, who were at the British warm-weather training camp at the Antonio Domínguez Alfonso Olympic Stadium in Las Americas, were on the same motorbike when they were hit by a car coming round a bend on the wrong side of the road. Both sustained pelvic injuries, and Ellington also suffered a broken tibia and fibula and a facial fracture. A British Athletics spokesman confirmed that

they were both conscious and stable. The team-mates will miss the 2017 season, including the August World Championships in London. And there are doubts about whether either athlete will be able to compete again because pelvic injuries are regarded as really serious for sprinters. In an Instagram message after the accident Ellington said: “I do not know how me or my training partner Nigel are still alive.” Ellington, a two-time Olympian, was part of the gold medal-winning 4x100m relay teams at the 2014 and 2016 European Championships. Levine won gold relay medals at the same competition in 2013 and 2014.

Adeje-Arona’s joint venture is a winner

THE first-ever shared stand by Costa Adeje and Arona, at Madrid’s 2017 Fitur tourism trade fair last week, proved a total success, attracting some 40,000 visitors.

It added up to 15% of total visitors to the exhibition, over the five days it was open to the public and professionals. And of their huge total, Costa and Arona received 10,000 direct consultations. To emphasise how popular the stand was, all the promotional material displayed by both municipalities was distributed: guides, posters and even 3D glasses, to perform virtual experiences. Ermitas Moreira, Adeje Tourism Councillor, said: “We had not set any targets, or goals. Our main aim at Fitur

was simply to be visible, to show our singularities, to have a space of our own to hold the meetings we had planned, and trying to attract new customers. “We also wanted to provide a meeting place for companies in the tourism sector at the exhibition.” The global figures of Fitur 2017, released by the Ifema organisation, were also extremely positive. The tourism fair welcomed 245,000 visitors, representing a 6% growth against the previous year. And it highlighted, especially, the number of professionals attending in the first three days. The 135,838 people, up 9% on last year, consolidated a high, international representation. Around 7,500 worldwide journalists also attended the exhibition.

New car park to halt drivers’ Adeje stress ADEJE Council has already begun work on the car park next to Casa Fuerte, in the historic old town, to the great relief of many drivers who have hunted high and low for a space over the years. The 3m-euro project, funded by the Council alone, should be completed in a year and will end the lack of parking spaces in the town centre. It should boost trade for shops and restaurants. It is also included in the

Adeje 2020 Project, which will improve connectivity in the area. The car park will cater for 200 vehicles, distributed over three floors. And the roof, at street level, will be transformed into a 2,000sq/m public square. Entrance to the new car park will on Tagoror Street, with the exit on Castillo Street. And, even more good news for motorists, construction work will not affect traffic!

Just the ticket for Carnival Queens

THE opening ceremony for Santa Cruz Carnival, featuring candidates for the three Queens’ events at Santa Cruz Maritime Park last Friday, was broadcast live, via Television Canaria, throughout the Canary Islands. It was also watched by more than 1,000 spectators, who saw a total of 47 aspiring queens, comprising the three sectors - Children, Adults and Seniors - taking part in a raffle to decide each person’s order of appearance during the Carnival Queen contests. Laura Afonso and Elvis Sanfiel presented the event, including performances by singers Miriam Reyes, Dunkan de la Salsa and Argel Campos. Also participating were dancers from the MMDanza Academy, along with several people from the Santa Cruz Sports Association’s synchronised swimming team, and members of the groups Tropicana, Cariocas, Bahia Bahitiare and Danzarines Canarios.

A mountain of clothes kills parents and child AN Alicante couple and their 12-year-old daughter were killed when clothes, stacked in their bedroom in boxes and weighing hundreds of kilos, toppled on them as they slept.

The couple were keeping the clothes in the hope of selling them off. Their eldest daughter, 18, made the grim discovery when she awoke and found that the flat was quiet.

She went into her parents’ bedroom and discovered that all the boxes had collapsed on the bed. She couldn’t see them or her sister, buried under what was estimated to be one to two tonnes of clothes, and called the police. Officers managed to pull out the younger daughter, but they were unable to revive her. Firefighters were later called in to help extract the parents from under the clothes’ mountain, but it was unclear why the boxes had collapsed.

Art gang arrested

LORO Parque has welcomed four new Rock hopper chicks into its penguin baby station, all in good health and flourishing.

NATIONAL Police officers have arrested eight members of a gang, believed to be involved in robbing 16 properties in Catalonia, Galicia and Madrid. And three of them have been implicated in an earlier 25m-euro incident concerning the theft of five paintings by British artist Francis Bacon. During raids on six properties, officers found a gun with ammunition, together with huge amounts of incriminating material, including notes on possible future theft targets.

Man, 75, imprisoned after stabbing sister AN Icod de Los Vinos man, aged 75, has been sentenced to eight years in prison for attempting to murder his sister, who built a wall near his house without his consent.

The man, Virgilio, also had to pay 30,000 euros in compensation to his victim, so he and his wife offered their house and a plot of land as payment, both next

to his sister’s house. The incident happened on 6th March 2014, when Virgilio knocked on his sister’s door and asked her to take his wife’s blood pressure. Once she has done that, he stabbed her in the neck with a knife, so severely that his sister would have died had she not received immediate medical care. Virgilio then tried to commit suicide but his wife stopped him. He was detained by police and has remained in prison ever since.

These marine birds, born in December, remained for a time in an incubator. They are being fed a particular diet, based on fish porridge with calcium supplement, in proportion to 10% of their weight. Until the end of the month, or early March, they will be reared in the baby station, where they are receiving the necessary care during the first stage of their lives. After this period, the process of adapting to their new environment begins, until they are completely integrated with the rest of the Loro Parque penguins. At this stage,

however, the chicks’ gender is unknown until staff process the first blood analysis. Loro Parque’s Planet Penguin experts, with years of knowledge, love and respect, take great care of the birds. This has enabled the popular theme park to produce magnificent results, since the breeding of all marine bird species (Humboldt Penguin, King Penguin, Gentoo Penguin, Chinstrap Penguin, Rock hopper Penguin and Atlantic Puffin). optimal reproduction. Thanks to the plentiful food supply, available every year in springtime in the Antarctica’s polar ecosystem, penguins form colonies of hundreds of thousands of specimens. Unfortunately, this abundant diet is being threatened seriously by overfishing and by climate change, which affects marine currents adversely. For example, the continuous snowfall and the glaciers, where King Penguins use to nest, are also at great risk of disappearing through the planet’s global warming, caused by the greenhouse effect. All these circumstances threaten the future of these amazing birds. And Loro Parque, in its role as a modern zoo, operates to raise awareness of these issues among the public, with full support for the conservations efforts. At the same time, Loro Parque has implemented a new environmental management system. It is also developing its own photovoltaic solar energy plant. That’s a device to generate electricity directly from sunlight, via an electrical process that occurs naturally in certain types of material. These semi-conductors promote sustainable and responsible use of resources, while protecting the natural habitats of the animals in the wild.

Top Mafia man held ONE leader of a major Italian Mafia group has been arrested by police in Alhaurin de la Torre, Malaga. He is an international fugitive, considered to be a top dog in the Neapolitan Camorra crime syndicate, focused on trafficking cocaine and hashish. His arrest is part of a joint operation involving the Spanish National Police and Italian investigators, who have taken 17 members of the Amato-Pagani Mafia clan into custody in Naples, also seized goods and property

worth some 20m euros. The unnamed crime boss, nabbed in Alhaurin, is known to be the right-hand man of the Camorra’s kingpin. His arrest is considered a significant coup. The unnamed Mafia man was working as his organisation’s direct contact with other drugtraffickers in southern Spain. Italian authorities issued an immediate warrant for his arrest, and he was picked up early last Saturday. He has been held in custody, pending extradition back to his homeland.

Paco’s peace concert FOR the second year running, singer/songwriter Paco Damas has held a schools’ concert at Adeje Cultural Centre for students from Adeje IES secondary school, and Armeñime and San Miguel primary schools. It was staged to mark the celebration of School Day of Non-Violence and Peace. Adeje Education Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera, said: “Music plays an important part in the creative and educational development of students, and concerts such as this are enriching their lives. “Through music, one can transmit messages of integration, fraternity and

equality. From the Council’s point of view, it’s important to help initiatives of this kind because it allows us contribute to the integral training of our young people.” Paco is a well-known Andalucian musician, who also interprets and sets poetry to music. He uses his songs and concerts to promote the cause of peace, and has worked with many other artists, including Aute, Pastora Poler and Mónica Molina. Ana’s on top of the world ANA Snook loves studying and examtaking. But at 16, her only ambition in life is to be a professional actress.

That’s why she is taking a management course in the performing arts at Bath College, where she is already excelling after just one term. And right now she is, literally, on top of the world. No wonder because Ana, then at Wingate College, secured a 100% pass in the four-hour Cambridge International GCSE Spanish exam … the only girl in the entire world to do so last year! Colin Macrae, Head of Wingate School, said: “These awards recognised the talent, dedication and commitment of both learners and staff. We are all very proud of Ana, and also of the achievements of all of our students.” And the Cambridge International Exam Board wrote: “It is extremely rewarding to congratulate Cambridge learners and

teachers at Wingate School, who have worked so hard to achieve tremendous success in Cambridge International examinations.” Ana, who was born in Tenerife, also demonstrated her glittering talent at Estrellas, the Cabo Blanco theatre school dedicated to the performing arts. Mandy Scott, a choreographer and dance tutor with Estrellas since 2004, has a wealth of experience, and some of that could well have rubbed off on Ana. “She’s a natural actress and

she has great determination to succeed,” said Mandy. “She was head girl at Estrellas and would sort out any problems with the other pupils if I weren’t around. I’m sure she will go a long way. “I worked very closely with her on one production and saw, close up, just how talented she is.” Ana received 10 distinctions after taking her London Academy of Music and Drama (LAMDA) exams, to prove Mandy’s point about her talent. And she seems destined to climb the success ladder.

A slow reverse for mobility scooters

High test of nerve

FERRARI, the famed Formula 1 company, will welcome visitors to a newly-built sports-car extension in its PortAventura theme park, in Barcelona. The main attraction, a 12m-high roller-coaster ride which is Europe’s tallest and fastest, reaches 120km/h in just five seconds. The Ferrari Land theme park also includes the “BounceBack Tower”, resembling the bouncing movements of an engine’s pistons, and a 1,900ft test track, on which visitors can drive miniature Ferrari cars. It opens on 7th April and is expected to add an extra one million visitors a year to the overall theme park, which already attracts four million people annually.

Officer’s risky rescue

AN off-duty National Police officer jumped on to the Madrid Metro tracks after a passenger awaiting his train collapsed and fell on the line. The policeman was making his way home when he noticed the man, who was near the edge of the platform, pitch forward suddenly. He jumped down to rescue the man, who was unconscious and bleeding profusely. With the help of other travellers, he pulled the injured man back on to the platform and put him in the recovery position, monitoring his vital signs until paramedics arrived.

Skate park a must

AN avalanche of skaters hit the ramps at the new Skate Park in La Granja Park, Santa Cruz, once Mayor, José Manuel Bermúdez, cut the opening ribbon. It was designed by architect and designer Daniel Yabar, who specialises in this type of park. The sports area is divided into two areas. The first, called “street skate park” has 994sq/m while the “ramp skate park” extends over 1,370sq/m. Construction and start-up costs ran to about 283,000 euros.

Keeping chemists ‘appy

SANTA Cruz Town Hall has created an new app called ‘SC Farmacias’, which allows users to locate the nearest open chemist quickly and easily, particularly at weekends and on fiesta days. You can see all farmacies in the area which are open, or set to close in half-an-hour, by your GPS location. This app is now available for “Android” devices and will be in the Apple Store soon, Hopefully, it will soon be upgraded to include the rest of the island. Santa Cruz Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said: “this is an extremely useful app, which was in high demand by local residents, who can now resolve queries about the nearest open pharmacies.”

JUST the mention of mobility scooters on the streets of Tenerife really grinds people’s gears. So, in response to an email published last week about irresponsible and fit drivers breaking the recently-tightened laws in San Eugenio, Canarian Weekly headed down to Adeje.

There were far fewer of these vehicles around the commercial centre than expected, or have been seen in the past. And walking sticks, and surgical leggings suggested that these elderly drivers met the criteria for blue disability badges. Matters came to a head last summer when young, reckless drivers, some with children on board, sped along pavements and caused endless nearmisses. And Benidorm, the TV comedy series, turned the essential vehicles for people with limited mobility into a plaything in the eyes of many. But it was no fun for pedestrians here in the South. Adeje Council followed Arona’s lead and banned the carriages for anyone who couldn’t prove a legitimate need by producing a disability blue badge or medical certificate. A new decree was passed to overturn licences, and police were instructed to clamp down on rogue traders. And going down the hill towards Torviscas, pavement signs clearly stated the restrictions in several languages. The few scooters to be seen had blue mobility stickers,

and several shops had the vehicles to rent. But there were few takers, even though prices were marked down drastically at some outlets. For just 10 euros an hour, 25 euros a day, or 55 euros a week, a scooter could be yours. Opposite San Eugenio commercial centre a salesman outside ScooterPlus photographed wheels, trim, and other parts on his mobile (presumably to ensure it came back in the same state) as he explained the controls to an elderly couple, especially the wife, who had a walking stick. After they sauntered off, salesman Ivan explained what would be required to rent a scooter, and he stressed the need for a blue badge or medical certificate. So how was trade? “Quiet, lots of businesses around here have been prosecuted and closed,” he admitted. “The demand has also dropped, so the rest of us have had to lower prices. People have made a lot of money from the scooters - 35,000 euros a month when busy, but

now it´s more like 5,000 euros. We have to pay tax, insurance and other costs like everyone else and the rental earnings are nowhere near what they were.” Of course, there are always unscrupulous dealers in any trade, and some of the vehicles out and about displayed phone numbers or websites, rather than addresses. A woman holiday-maker from the UK, who has had medical need of a mobility scooter on recent visits, orders hers in advance from mobilityfamily.com (which also has premises). But she still has to show her blue badge when it it delivered to the apartment where she stays. It has been a difficult problem for local councils to deal with because, during the boom, outlets were springing up as sub-lets on premises, and by simply using their phone numbers. Adeje Mayor Jose Miguel Fraga acknowledged the problem when it first became news last summer. “We are all aware of the problems on the pavements, and it is something Adeje will control,” he said. “But it will take some time to get the law tightened up.” There was a National Police van parked in the pedestrian area near the Torviscas end of San Eugenio for a while, and high-profile deployment has become more common in Adeje and Arona lately. Anyone around during the South’s festive period will have noticed a brief upturn in rogue scooter drivers, but that seems to have subsided. The tougher new laws have clearly helped, but the craze has definitely cooled off, and a big dip in profits has probably been the biggest brake of all.

Woman, 79, assaulted and robbed 96-year-old friend

NATIONAL Police in Zaragoza have arrested a 79-year-old pensioner for robbing and intimidating a 96-year-old woman in her home.

The pensioner was detained on Tuesday after the victim’s son telephoned police to say that he’d had found the person who had robbed his mother a few days earlier. He told them that

he was watching the woman, who was at a café drinking coffee. She had gained access to the victim’s house because they were friends, and she was paying her a visit. But when the older woman opened the door and let her in, her “guest” asked her for money. The 96-year-old agreed to give her some and went to another room, followed by her friend. At that point the younger woman slapped the other one twice and took about 200 euros in cash, before fleeing.

Calatrava’s on carpet over Auditorium tiles

CATALAN architect Santiago Calatrava was praised and hired for more international building projects after the completion of the Santa Cruz Auditorium 13 years ago.

Now the sky is threatening to fall in on his world after the Cabildo’s claim that faulty design, and the mosaic roof tiles, has led to defects that could cause a 3m-euro repair bill, including the costs of drafting projects, licences and fees. The wave-like roof is covered in thousands of broken tile shards, known as trencadis, which create a lovely sheen that looks particularly stunning when lit up at night. All has been well for more than a decade as the great and good have performed inside the acclaimed building. Opera, pop concerts,

exhibitions, and even visits from international statesmen like former US President Bill Clinton have graced the iconic halls. Calatrava´s design studio, based in mainland Spain and

Switzerland, along with three other building firms involved in the project, are now racing against time to defend themselves following the Cabildo’s 14-day ultimatum for an explanation.

A detailed study by Intermac, the company hired by Tenerife’s ruling body, revealed the concerns. Cabildo Director of Culture Jose Luis Rivero, stressed: “The report points out that

there is no risk, so the building will continue its usual activity. As a precautionary measure, it has been recommended that they install sensors on the roof of the building and data will be sent to the island government monthly.” The timing of the announcement is interesting, coming just a few months after scathing comments by Calatrava, about his strained working relationship with the Cabildo at the start of the project, appeared in an architectural journal. The auditorium, which took six years to build, has 17 large metal panels forming the exterior. The concrete-and-trencadis tiles, mainly white with coloured mosaics, were later added to the roof, on top of a further 17 metal panels that formed the building’s main jacket. According to Intermac’s report: “Defective adhesion to façade surfaces has led to anomalies, related

damage, and mosaics falling off the building’s facade. “Given the extent of the damage on the building façade, with small and large areas of mosaic detaching, it’s advised that the mosaic should be removed and, subsequently, replaced.” Meanwhile, the report points to “a knockon effect, producing moisture penetration through the cracks where mosaics are missing, or between the grouting, altering the properties of the adhesive, causing the metal surface to rust, which, in turn, causes more mosaic tiles to fall off.” The report also states that the estimated cost of repairs is 503,093 euros to repair the damp, and 2,179,000 euros to repair the building façade. Calatrava has sent a team to find out the extent of the problems, and hold a meeting with the Cabildo’s technicians. And he intends to visit the building to check it out himself.

hope Dangerously-sick boy Fortune-hunters to raise £1bn warship kidnapped by mother A BRITISH warship, sunk by the Spanish off the Uruguayan coast in 1763, could be raised by an Argentine treasure-hunter next month.

The six-storey Lord Clive ship was blasted by cannon fire while attempting to reclaim the city of Colonia del Sacramento, a former British colony seized by the Spanish. The wreck, containing finances to wage war for four years, was found in 2004 by

Ruben Collado, who hopes to uncover £1bn in gold coins. Money apart, he believes that raising the ship will be an important event for Latin American and Spanish history. “If the ship had not failed in its attempt to retake Colonia del Sacramento, we could be speaking English throughout Latin America today,” he said. An 80-strong team of divers, technicians and support staff will work on raising the wreck in an operation costing around £4m.

Vietnamese girls lived in Barcelona airport POLICE arrested a mum who “kidnapped” her fouryear-old son from Málaga hospital, where he was awaiting a lung transplant.

She was caught at the highspeed AVE rail station in Cuenca, Castilla-La Mancha, en-route to Valencia. And, at the time, the child was described as “blue in the face” and struggling to breathe. He was given immediate medical assistance on site and then rushed to A&E, in the paediatric wing of Cuenca hospital. The boy was later transferred to the Malaga children’s ward, from where he had been taken.

His mother, a 22-year-old Moroccan national, was under an arrest warrant as authorities sought to make her son a ward of court. She had even been told that if he were not in constant treatment, he would live another few hours only. That meant the police were in a race against time to save his life. Málaga hospital security guards informed them as soon as the woman escaped with her son in her arms, and local railway-station guards reported her arrival. They had seen her get on the Córdoba-Valencia AVE train at the Málaga stop. And, as this line involves changing trains in Cuenca, police arranged for a team of officers, and a mobile intensive-care

unit, to be waiting at Cuenca station. Excellent co-ordination meant the police were able to detect which carriage the mother and son were travelling in, and were ready at its door as it pulled into the station. Authorities are now looking into the child’s family situation, in case the child may have to be taken into care to prevent his mother kidnapping him again. Other than revealing that the little boy “has very serious health problems and needs a lung transplant”, medical staff did not given details of the child’s condition. Also, is it not known why the mother was, apparently, opposed to the transplant being carried out.

Adeje joins the Madrid Fusion MANUEL Luis Méndez Martín, Adeje’s Economic Development Councillor, was in Madrid last week for the Madrid Fusión, an international gastronomy event celebrated every year.

Professionals from all over the world attend this important event, and Méndez Martín had three main objectives during his visit: *Attend the talks to make sure Adeje’s ideas are part of the mix *Be there for the borough’s professionals, who have travelled to demonstrate their creative skills, such as Pablo Pastor, Braulio Simancas or Juan Carlos Clemente

*Establish contacts in the gastronomy world which, in time, may help the borough During his stay, the Councillor met Rosario Barrios Cono, Spanish director of “Le Cordon Bleu”, the main school dedicated to this branch of cooking in Europe. The school is in Madrid’s Universidad Francisco de Vitoria, and Barrios Cono

confirmed that she would visit Adeje in the coming months to get to know the borough’s installations, ahead of agreeing a series of training projects there. Madrid Fusión ran from January 23rd-25th, with Tenerife as one of the invited destinations, offering a chance to show off the island’s gastronomic values and local produce.

TWO Vietnamese teenagers, who spent four days “living” in Barcelona’s El Prat airport, have been taken into foster care.

Nobody realised that the girls, both 13, had been living in a restricted area in Terminal 1, with no flight tickets or passports, until they were found and questioned on 28th December. Police, who are trying to find out what they were doing in Barcelona, and how they got there, have not ruled out a possible case of human trafficking. Meanwhile, The General Directorate of Childhood Assistance (DGAIA), Catalunya regional government’s department for young persons’ welfare, has

put the girls in a children’s home temporarily. The youngsters were caught trying to enter the European flight zone, so that they would be within the Schengen passportfree area and not subject to border controls. Police found a Vietnamese interpreter to help question them, but they did not give much detail about how they arrived in El Prat or what they intended to do there, simply limiting answers to disclosing names and country of origin. But they were carrying money and four mobile phones between them, which aroused suspicion. Police suspect that had they not been trafficked, they may have been abandoned by their adult companions, leaving on a connecting flight from Vietnam to another destination.

Cultural crooks lifted thousands of artefacts SPANISH police have arrested 75 people as part of a crackdown on cultural theft-throughout Europe. The Government’s Culture Ministry recovered over 3,500 stolen artefacts during the investigation, known as Pandora. It began last October, with the collaboration of 17 other European countries. Several stolen coins were

also found by the police when tracing online sales. They also recovered almost 500 archaeological objects in Murcia, including 19 of them in a raid on the city’s museum in 2014. Many other artefacts were looted from various countries during times of war, and more than 48,000 people were investigated in the probe.

Hotel boom is a bonus

By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct

LAST week, the pound gained good ground against all of its major counterparts, and, since the Supreme Court ruled that Mrs May cannot trigger Article 50 without an act of parliament, it went from strength to strength.

Following last Friday’s first meeting between the Prime Minister and President Trump at the White House, Mrs May emphasised the importance of keeping a healthy relationship with the United States, even though it might not be on a par with the one between Blair and Bush. As both leaders are

eager to see growth in each of their economies, Mrs May is keen to see the UK sign a bilateral trade agreement as soon as possible. After Donald Trump’s implementation of the “travel ban”, business leaders were quick to voice their opinions. And the Prime Minister was under fire for not

reacting more strongly to his latest actions. Mrs May later said she was looking forward to welcoming him to the UK, despite a petition with 1.5 million signatures, calling for him to be banned. Meanwhile, locally, more hotels are opening in the Canary Islands, which reflects the growing tourist interest. With more people visiting, there are more opportunities for buy-tolet investors. Hotel and resort companies around the world are set to invest even more in the Canaries, as has been reported. These companies

Advertorial De Cotta Law

Consumers and Spanish banks SPAIN has a legal structure governing the banking and financial services sector.

This is a body of administrative law, and the legal framework incorporates rules and regulations on the control and financing of banks. An important part of the legal framework is the Ley Hipotecaria. This is the Mortgage and Land Law, incorporating the registration of property and inscription, and execution of mortgages. There are also laws which protect consumers from abusive clauses. Consumers have had a number of issues with Spanish banks in recent years, such as the clausula de suelo, which is a floor or baserate clause. Some banks used to peg interest rates on mortgages above the permitted percentage over Euribor. Contact us to assist with the

new administrative system for reclaiming this money promptly from your bank. In some cases, the sums involved have not been great. But some consumers have been able to recover thousands from their bank, once the clause is challenged. We always try to negotiate with the banks to eliminate this clause, and to repay without recourse to the courts. However if it is necessary to go to court, we look to recover costs and can make the claim with documentary evidence of your payments. There have been a number of other financial products and services provided by banks which have caused losses, such as currency-exchange mortgages; sale of preferential shares and illegal mortgage foreclosures. Some claims can allow for a particular mortgage clause to be annulled while continuing with the financing, if that is the

best route to take. When clients are unable to continue with a mortgage, they can surrender the property directly to the bank (dación en pago) if that is the best option, and it avoids being pursued for the negative equity. If a mortgage foreclosure commences on your principal residence, the bank have to negotiate a solution. And we can assist with this. will be expanding the number of available rooms for visitors to the Islands. With the threat of political instability and unease in other parts of the world, this makes the Canary Islands a really attractive option for holidays, with the likes of Tenerife, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote and Gran Canaria presenting a relatively low risk for travellers. The islands could see themselves gaining in popularity as a result, and, with more tourism, comes more demand for places to stay. Although hotels and resorts are always popular, there are huge numbers of people who prefer to stay in more homely properties, where they can cook for themselves and enjoy a quiet evening in, if the mood strikes. As a result, this presents an opportunity for UK buyers to get in at the right time. If you’re interested in purchasing a property you intend to let out to tourists, you will likely be looking at how to go about it now. With the Spanish property market in general seeing real growth, and the Balearic and Canary Islands performing particularly well, house prices could rise significantly in

the near future. If you considering purchasing property in the Islands, looking at the future of the UK’s political situation, and that of the pound, means that now might be the best time to transfer your money abroad. Airport tax drop could lead to cheaper flights THE Spanish Government has announced an 11% cut in airport taxes over the next five years, which could mean cheaper flights, depending on how flight companies manage the drop. The first-ever Airports Regulation Document (DORA), approved by the Council of Ministers last week, will cover air-travel management strategies between now and 2021. The Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says the aim is for Spain, as a holiday destination, to become increasingly more competitive, especially as the tourism industry generates 11% of the country’s GDP and 13% of its jobs. The tax reduction will enable service quality to improve because AENA, the air-infrastructure governing body, will

be able to invest over 2bn euros in Spain’s terminals over the next five years. The company says the government’s decision has been made possible through a general improvement in efficiency in managing Spain’s airports. And it also says that the request for taxes to be frozen, at least, had come from AENA itself. In response to its initial request, the National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) had proposed a 2.02% annual drop in airport taxes, while airlines operating in Spain asked for them to be dropped by 2.59% a year. The resulting reduction in taxes, planned by Rajoy’s government, is somewhere between these two figures.

RBS 6 Nations Championship 2017

England V France Saturday 4th February, ITV1, 16.10

ITV’s live coverage of RBS 6 Nations Championship 2017 features a stellar line-up of on-screen talent and matches to be shown live on the channel. The channel will show eight matches throughout the six weeks of the tournament, including key clashes such as England v France and England v Scotland, both from Twickenham, as well as Ireland v France and what some are tipping to be the title decider, Ireland v England at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin. The 2017 Championship, which kicks off on Saturday February 4, marks the second of a six-year deal between ITV and the BBC that sees matches shared between both broadcasters on television and online. Leading ITV’s team will be presenters Mark Pougatch and Jill Douglas, joined by Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallaglio, members of England’s victorious Rugby World Cup 2003 team, along with their coach Sir Clive Woodward, former Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll, former Wales captain Gareth Thomas, former Scotland and Lions coach Sir Ian McGeechan, England Women World Cup winner Maggie Alphonsi, former England international Ugo Monye, former Italian captain Marco Bortolami and former French international Olivier Magne. Martin Bayfield will combine presenting duties with his role as reporter. Joining them with a wealth of experience in the commentary box will be Nick Mullins, Miles Harrison, Martin Gillingham and Simon Ward, plus co-commentators Shane Williams, Gordon D’Arcy, Ben Kay, Scott Hastings and David Flatman. Bringing viewers all the latest developments from in and around the stadia will be reporter Gabriel Clarke. Following the success of ITV’s exclusive Rugby World Cup 2015 coverage, 2016 saw ITV broadcast Six Nations Rugby for the first time. ITV have taken viewers right to the heart of the action in recent years with ref cams, specialist lineout cameras, tracking cameras, corner post cameras and spider cams to ensure viewers can see crunch moments from a range of close-up perspectives.

Tracey Ullman’s Show BBC1, 21.30

All of British life is here in the new series of Tracey Ullman’s Show. Delinquent Dame Judi Dench is back, but will being a national treasure be enough to save her this time? Nicola Sturgeon has her sights set on more than just Scotland; and Doctor Peluzzi can cure your bad knee and make you run faster than anyone else (but if anyone asks you to pee into a cup, get a friend to do it). There’s also a heartfelt song from Angela Merkel: she’s all on her own (apart from Birgit her faithful stylist - and a million refugees). With a guest star appearance from Ben Miller as Rupert Murdoch.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories ITV1, 21.00

Barry Gibb of the Bee Gees joins Piers Morgan to look back on his fifty-year career as a songwriter and pop legend. He reflects on the untimely deaths of all three of his younger brothers - Robin, Maurice and Andy - and how he’s come to terms with being the last surviving member of the Bee Gees. Barry tells Piers how the group rose from child performers to global superstars in the wake of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. He reveals how a childhood accident nearly killed him, what really happened when he and his future wife sneaked into Dr Who’s Tardis and gives his verdict when Piers serenades him with his falsetto voice.

The Good Karma Hospital

3rd February - 9th February 2017

S u nday

5

ITV1, 21.00

Set in a coastal town in tropical South India, The Good Karma Hospital tells the story of junior doctor, Ruby Walker, who arrives in India looking for a job and a distraction from her heartbreak. She anticipates the sunshine, the palm trees and picture-perfect beaches. She’s even prepared for the sacred cows, the tuk-tuks and the Delhi-belly that everyone warned her about. What she doesn’t expect are the realities of work, life and even love at an under-resourced and over-worked cottage hospital. Run by a gloriously eccentric Englishwoman – Doctor Lydia Fonseca - The Good Karma Hospital is the beating heart of the local community. Held together by a hand-picked team of British and Indian medics, the Good Karma turns no-one away - locals, ex-pats and tourists are all welcomed through its doors. The series follows the lives and loves of a team of hard working medics as they travel the red dirt roads to patients staying in five-star beach resorts or inland – through lush green jungles – to help local villagers. Back at the hospital, literally any story can walk through the door – and often it does. Life affirming and optimistic, this contemporary series mixes the heart-breaking with the humorous, and as Doctor Ruby Walker adjusts to life in India, she realises that the Good Karma Hospital is more than just a rundown medical outpost - it’s a home.

It’s the start of another sizzling summer season in Ibiza as Head Rep, David, welcomes his new team to the party isle. Some old faces return alongside some newbies but has David put together a crack team of reps and how will they fare over the coming summer, especially after hearing they are all on probation and could be sent home at any minute? Everyone’s favourite ‘himbo’ Deano is back but how will he find working with rep royalty Imogen, the self-confessed love of his life, now that she has a boyfriend. And what will happen as he gets to know new rep, Laura, who he calls his “dream girl” within hours of meeting her? Hayley joins the troop as a new rep but will what she describes as her “dream job” turn out to be so? Jordan makes his return to the White Isle after leaving halfway through the last season to be with his girlfriend. But he’s back. He’s single. And he’s Assistant Head Rep. When he meets guests Geordies Jade and Bethan his lothario-side makes a reappearance but could this be more than just a holiday romance with Bethan? And what mischief could the fellow guests, Manchester lads, Geo, Matt and Sam get up to under the rep’s watch?

SAS: Rogue Warriors BBC2, 21.00 The Special Air Service is the world’s most famous combat unit with the motto ‘Who Dares Wins’ - but the story of how it came into existence has been, until now, a closely guarded secret. Now, 75 years after it all began, the SAS has agreed to open up its archive for the first time and allow journalist and best-selling author Ben Macintyre (Operation Mincemeat, Agent Zigzag) to reveal the true story of their formation during the darkest days of World War II. With unprecedented access to the SAS secret files, unseen footage and exclusive interviews with its founding members, this series tells the remarkable story behind an extraordinary fighting force. In this first episode, Ben starts at the very beginning of the formation of the SAS - at the height of the war, in the heat of the North African desert in 1941. A bored, eccentric young British army officer starts to form his own plans to take on the German and Italian forces with an elaborate scheme that would prove to be imaginative, radical and entirely against the rules. This officer was David Archibald Stirling, an aristocratic dreamer who once held lofty ambitions to be an artist or a famous mountaineer but now, with the war in the desert reaching its most desperate stage, Stirling has a vision for a new kind of war: attacking the enemy where they least expect it - from behind their own lines. With exclusive access to the SAS’s 1987 filmed interviews with Stirling and the other original SAS members, Ben reveals how Stirling succeeded in convincing the many in British High Command who opposed this radical new way of warfare, how he began training a small elite fighting force, and how his new covert tactics helped the Allies to victory in the desert.

Dawn, and smoke rises from another bombed out night in London. Emma washes out the insides of a Women’s Voluntary Service van with her fellow member, Evelyn. Tough, working class Evelyn remarks that in the weeks that Emma’s been volunteering, she’s really proved her grit. Pleased, exhausted and covered in soot, she returns to begin work all over again at the Halcyon. Emma finds Joe waiting for her at the staff entrance, keen and persistent as ever, and remarkably curious about her work for the WVS. It dawns on her – is he writing a story on her? She’s incensed – she forbids him outright. But before she can get any more indignant, she’s cut off: by a furious Garland. She’s late and he’s been worried sick, but Emma can’t see past his anger to what lies beneath – panic and protection, with no clue as to how to keep her safe in these times of war. After she storms off, Garland relays as much to Peggy, who experiences the same anxiety with Billy. But what can they practically do?

BBC1, 21.00 Following the disappearance of nine year-old Shannon Matthews from The Moorside Estate in Dewsbury, the police and community mount a frantic search. Despite their efforts, no trace of her can be found and within a few hours the police investigation takes on the scale of a murder enquiry. Emotional public appeals for information from her mother Karen Matthews amount to nothing, and the community, led by Julie Bushby, stand by her and make extraordinary efforts of their own to find Shannon. Despite the support, doubts are beginning to creep in for some regarding Karen’s behaviour. Friend and neighbour Natalie (Sian Brooke) struggles with her conscience as she becomes convinced that Karen knows more than she is revealing. Just as all hope is close to fading, Shannon is found alive. The wild celebrations of Julie and the community are rapidly cut short when they learn that Shannon was being held by a man known to Karen.

BBC2, 20.00 This time the Robshaws experience a thoroughly modern decade, as they enter the 1920s. They get their first taste of the racy reputation of the age as they host a jazz-age party fueled by a menu of 14 different cocktails. The decade has something new for everyone, with sweet treats for Fred, spicy food for Brandon in a 1920s curry house, and the kicks and tricks of the Charleston for Miranda and Ros, with Strictly’s James and Ola Jordan. Rochelle has a new role too as a modern housewife. No longer a lady of leisure, she finds there’s a lot of work to do in the kitchen now Debbie’s found new work in a grocers and a fish and chip shop. In this decade of rapid changes, corsets are gone, hemlines are raised and at the dinner table there are plenty of modern conveniences, with a completely tinned dinner, the wonder of Pyrex and the launch of some very familiar brands.

After Brexit: The Battle For Europe

3rd February - 9th February 2017

Th u r s day

BBC2, 21.00

The European Union faces the biggest challenge in its 60-year history with the rise of populist eurosceptic movements across the continent. As Britain prepares to begin the process of withdrawing from the EU, the BBC’s Europe Editor Katya Adler asks whether the Union itself can survive. For BBC Two’s award-winning This World strand, Katya Adler travels across the continent, from France, Italy, Hungary to Germany, meeting leading populist politicians who now pose a major threat to the EU establishment. She also meets ordinary voters who feel angry and left behind after years of Eurozone turmoil and the international migrant crisis. The film begins in Sicily, where Katya has full backstage access to the annual political rally of Italy’s populist Five Star Movement. Travelling on to Rome she talks with the pro-European reformist Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, in a candid interview. Over the course of the film Katya charts the collision course between these two forces, resulting in Renzi’s resignation and a major victory for Five Star. Across the continent - from Italy to France, where the Front National’s Marine Le Pen is now in contention for presidency, to Hungary, where the football-loving Prime Minister Viktor Orban is launching his own counter-revolution against Brussels - the film looks at how populist forces are challenging the European Union like never before. Back in Brussels, Katya meets some of the EU’s top eurocrats and politicians, including Martin Schulz, the outgoing President of the European Parliament and Guy Verhofstadt, a former Prime Minister of Belgium and the man charged with negotiating Brexit on behalf of the European Parliament.

Unforgotten ITV1, 21.00 With each of the suspects having a motive, opportunity or connection to victim, David Walker, Cassie and Sunny try to join the dots to discover who actually killed him 25 years earlier. Though Sara has provided reliable evidence that she was in Italy when the murder took place, Cassie suspects that it is too good – that it’s something put together by someone who knew that one day they’d need an alibi. Knowing that Sara came into contact with David whilst she worked as a prostitute and suspecting that she was abused by him as a child, the team wonder whether the case is part of a wider revenge plan. Searching for answers about their childhoods, Cassie travels to Glasgow to talk to Colin’s father, Harry whilst Sunny pays a visit to Marion’s sister, Elise, and mother, Joy, who are heartbroken when they start to understand the truth about their loved ones.

The Great Pottery Throw Down BBC2, 20:00

Home potters compete to become the new champion of British pottery. The judges, masterpotter Keith Brymer Jones and ceramic-artist Kate Malone scrutinise their work over three gruelling challenges. In the throw down challenge this week, king of the wheel Keith demonstrates how to build a double walled pot, but against the clock, which potter can produce the goods? For their spot test, the potters get to grips with pulling to create handles for a set of three casserole dishes. And finally, the main make challenge this week is to hand build a large clock, slab rolling large amounts of clay to shape, then raw glaze and fire them to produce beautiful ceramic timepieces.

Cats Welfare news

Sleep facts about cats OUR feline friends are true masters at falling asleep any time, any place and under any circumstances. Even a cursory internet search will reveal thousands of photos of cats sleeping in cute, or crazy, positions.

But why do cats sleep so much, and what happens in their minds when they’re sleeping? Do they have sleep cycles like people do? All that snoozing is in your cat’s genes Cats can sleep as much as 16 hours a day, and older cats spend even more time at rest, as much as 20 hours a day. That sleeping habit is a result of the cat’s evolution, nutritional

habits, and physiology. In the wild, cats have to hunt in order to eat, and the stalking, chasing, and killing of prey burns a lot of energy. Sleeping helps cats conserve energy between meals. Cats aren’t always sound asleep Of the time cats spend sleeping, about three quarters of it is snoozing. In that state, cats can get all the rest they need, but they’re

still alert enough to awaken at a moment’s notice. You can tell when cats are in light sleep because their ears will twitch and rotate toward noises, and their eyes will be open a tiny bit. Even when they’re sitting upright, they can slip into dozing mode. They do, however, sleep deeply - and even dream The remaining quarter of cats’ sleeping hours

are spent in deep sleep, but older cats might spend as much as 30% or 40% of the time at that level. Cats in deep sleep are usually curled up with their eyes tightly closed. Sometimes they might even have their tail over their face, like a fluffy sleep mask. Deep sleep is critical for the body’s ability to regenerate itself and stay healthy. It’s also the time when your cat dreams. If you’ve seen your cat’s whiskers or paws twitching while she’s asleep, there’s a good chance she’s dreaming. Some cats do snore Snoring happens when the airway is obstructed by extra skin from the soft palate. This is most likely to happen when your cat is relaxed, and is more common in short-nosed breeds such as the Persian, Himalayan, or Exotic Shorthair. A change in sleeping habits could be a sign of trouble If your cat starts sleeping a lot more, or a lot less, than usual, contact your vet. Excessive sleep could be a sign of illness or pain, while frequent wakefulness can indicate a problem such as hyperthyroidism.

Adoptions At this time of year we have very few kittens available for adoption, but we do have lots of young adults and older cats who are often over-looked. All cats go on trial, so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision prior to adoption. If you would like to ask questions or meet them with no obligation ring or Whatsapp Maria on 646629129 (seven days a week 9-6pm), message us on Facebook or contact us on our website www.catswelfare-tenerife.com. All our adult cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at www.cats-welfaretenerife.com/pets. But we do also have lots of young adults, so contact us to discuss your requirements. Donations Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. If you don’t have transport, or have large, bulky items such as furniture and household effects to donate, please ring Mark on 636590557, and he will arrange collection from you.

Saint Blas service CATHOLICS and Anglicans will unite on Sunday at San Blas Church for a service in honour of Saint Blas.

It starts at 10.30am and, on the same evening, a new timetable

has been introduced for the Anglican Church. Sunday services will start at 5.30pm on the first Sunday of each month until June, but, otherwise, at the usual midday time. And, this Sunday aside, the Catholic service remains at 10am.

Phil Fletcher benefit night

A SUPER night of entertainment was provided to a packed house this week to raise funds for entertainer Phil Fletcher, half of the Kracka duo, who have been resident at Bar 39 for 10 years.

Phil fell ill on New Year’s Eve and will be off work for four months, and how his colleagues and fans rallied round. Hosted by Tony Bailey, the other half of Kracka, the stellar line-up included Cy Benson, Lee St Lawrence, Ged Bolton, Robbie Dominic, Stuart Beagley, George King, Colin Stevens, Tanya Tevaro, Suzy q, Spencer Robson, Dee Daniels, and Arthur Peterson. And the night was finished off in fine style by Tony, John Ashford and Danny Day on live guitars. There was also a guest appearance by Melissa Miles, daughter of John Miles, who flew over with an impressive 600-euro donation. It was collected by wellwishers in Blackpool, where Tony and Phil are still remembered as being part of the club band Shady back in the day. A collection at The Waterfall bar, on Golf del Sur, added 200 euros to the

pot, and 460 euros had been donated by people who couldn’t attend. The prize list was as spectacular as the entertainment line-up, with a year’s free haircuts donated by Ruth, at Blueberry Bobs, which was auctioned for 120 euros, and Sound of Musicals tickets, supplied by Showtime, were auctioned for 80 euros.

Helping Hands and Live Arico event

Join forces in an emergency A RECENT, tragic tale was brought to our attention this week: fire ravaged through a property, injuring the people who lived there, and killing one of their cats. Also in the building were eight dogs and another seven cats. All had been rescued by their owners to save them from a life on the streets. Two of the dogs are in the vets suffering from smoke inhalation, and the rest are being cared for by Jill Jacobson, from the animal charity San Francisco de los Animales. The upper floor of the property is totally destroyed, and the family have lost everything. Covering and support material is needed urgently to repair the property, and, clearly, belongings must be replaced. Helping Hands will be assisting with this. Live Arico will be helping

with medicines, vet care, and new beds and food for the animals. To this end, we are organising a joint charity event at Clouseaus, Palm Mar, next Sunday (12th Feb) from 2pm. It will be hosted by Derrick Lynes, and will feature entertainers Storm Duo, Suzy q, Colin Stevens, Rick Porter, Soni Farrell, Hayley Butler, Simon Roberts, Uproar, Scott Bateman with more to be confirmed. Please come along and support this event, because these people and animals deserve our help. We need raffle prizes, which can be left at any Live Arico charity shop, or at Clouseaus Bar. The same goes for cash donations, which should be in envelopes marked Clouseaus event. For further information, call Sue on 629 388 102.

Bill and Heather Richmond provided a “Guess how much money in the envelope” game, Chris Bryan brought scrummy cupcakes to sell, and raffle prizes were donated by Website Design Tenerife; The Palms, Golf del Sur; Sinatras, Sunset Bay; Hair Today, Golf del Sur; The Waterfall, Golf del Sur; Tenerife Sunshine; Sandra,

at A Nu You; Beauty Within, Los Gigantes; Bar 39; DaMassimos, at the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf; The Wine Bar, Los Gigantes; Taylors Bar; Maraguys; Dylans Bar; Hiba Hiba; Val Richardson; Balti Balti; GG’s Bar and Shambles Bar. Unfortunately, Phil wasn’t well enough to attend, but he and wife Lee-Ann were able to enjoy the evening by

listening to Oasis Fm as the whole event was broadcast live by Chris Elkington and Jenny T. Many thanks to Chris and all the team for this. In total, an amazing total of 2,797 euros was raised, which, we all hope, will make life a bit easier for Phil and his family as he recovers. Many thanks to all of you who made this happen.

Sticking to what’s best

By Val Sainsbury YOU either love it or hate it, much like several other foods available in the shops, but a nice stick of celery will provide your body with a lot of goodness. For those celery-haters among you, or those who are unsure about this vegetable, you might want to reconsider eating it when you have read about all its health benefits. Aids weight loss Celery is the perfect vegetable to snack on when you are trying to watch your figure, or lose some extra pounds. One large celery stalk contains just 10 calories. This makes celery an ideal snack, whenever you feel hunger pangs coming on. But don’t

eat celery sticks with heavy dips or dressings, because this will make the snack unhealthy. Reduces inflammation Are you looking for a natural way to reduce inflammation in your body? Celery contains anti-inflammatory properties that help reduce pain. If you suffer asthma, acne, inflammatory-bowel disease or arthritis, it is an excellent super-food to snack on. Or you can add it to soups, salads,

casserole dishes and stir-fries. Reduces stress levels Do you need some natural relief from physical and mental stress? If so, celery can help because it is packed full of magnesium, and an essential oil that helps promote relaxation. Celery sticks make the perfect bedtime snack because they can actually help you fall asleep - and stay asleep. The vegetable also

works for calming down anxiety and panicattacks, because it contains a medicinal property that acts as a natural sedative. Promotes alkaline balance Celery contains nutrients that help regulate the body’s alkaline balance, which can protect your body from becoming too acidic. Keeps digestive system working smoothly Celery makes an

excellent digestive aid. It contains lots of water and plenty of fibre, essential for keeping the digestive system running smoothly, and to help prevent conditions such as constipation. However, celery does contain diuretic properties, so those of you suffering from diarrhoea should not consume a large amount of this vegetable, because it can make the situation worse. Keeps eyesight healthy One large, celery stalk a day provides your body with vitamin A, which is an essential nutrient for maintaining eye health. Do consider having some celery sticks each day for a snack, or adding it to a main dish, to help get this potent nutrient into your diet. Promotes heart health Celery also helps promote proper blood

circulation and reduce shigh blood pressure, which is also essential for keeping your heart healthy and strong. Natural aphrodisiac You may find this surprising, but chomping on celery sticks every day can help promote arousal. This is because it is a wonderful aphrodisiac, containing two pheromones known as androstenone and androstenol. Prevents cancer A daily dose of celery is wonderful for helping prevent certain types of cancers. That’s because it contains powerful antioxidants which inhibit cancer cells. Two types of cancer it is particularly good at preventing are those of the pancreas and breast. So snack away, and enjoy this super vegetable. Your body will thank you for it!

Child car safety By Emma at Motorworld

IN the last issue, I covered the transporting of babies and young children up to four years in vehicles, and I’m now continuing with this important subject. Group 1 (9-18kg), from 1-4 years The child is strapped into the restraint system via a five-point harness, and then the restraint system is connected to the car. This allows the restraint system to be secured in a forward or rear-facing position. It’s very important that the seat is adjusted as the child grows, always avoiding gaps in the harness and in the installation of the restraint system, via the seat belt. This group of restraint

systems can also be purchased with an ISOFIX connection. In this group, it is recommended to fit the restraint system in a rear-facing position, and it must be fitted before the child is seated. And you should teach the child as soon as possible to keep his/her arms in the restraint system whenever possible, to reduce the risk of injury. Group 2 (15-25kg), from 3-6 years This is a booster seat with a back support, which allows the car’s three-point, seat-belt system to be used, but raising the child to the correct height. Group 3, (22-36kg) This type of seat is similar to the last group, in that it is a booster without the back support, which again raises the child to the height of the normal, three-point seat belt. It is obligatory to use the booster seats until the child reaches a height of 135cm, but it is recommended that you

continue using them until the child reaches 150cm. In groups 2 and 3, the seat belt’s vertical strap must pass over the child’s collarbone without touching the shoulder. And the horizontal strap must be as low as possible around the hip and muscle area, and never

around the stomach. In Spain, the law regarding child safety forms part of the Reglamento General de Circulación, which was last modified on October 1st 2015. This, in turn, also adapts to the European Directive 2014/37/UE and 91/671/ CEE. The main points of the

law state that the driver and the occupants must use a seat belt, and they must be homologated (approved officially). Cars in which seat belts aren’t fitted are exempt, but children cannot be transported in them. Children under 135cm must use childrestraint systems and be seated in the rear seats. This used to have an age-restriction of 12 years, but, with the law’s modification, the restriction was removed. There are, however, some exceptions, when: *The car doesn’t have rear seats *These seats are occupied by other children *The restraint systems can’t be fitted to the rear seats because the car is too small In these cases, the minors can be seated in the front seat, but always in a homologated restraint system, adapted to their height and weight. If the child is seated in a rear-facing seat, the

(part 2)

passenger’s airbag must be disconnected. If the child is in a forwardfacing seat, there is no need to disconnect the airbag. Child-restraint systems in special vehicles In vehicles with more than nine seats, the driver, guide or person in charge of the group must inform the passengers of the obligation to travel with their seat belt fastened correctly, or with the use of a homologated restraint system. This is carried out by either audio-visual means: written signs or picturegrams, placed in a visible area for every seat. In taxis, a minor who isn’t 135cm tall can travel in the rear seats without a suitable restraint system, but only within CITY limits. Out of the city, the responsible person would be the mother, father or guardian, so always ask for a taxi that can supply a restraint system, or have one available.

Interior designer so handy

So, you want gorgeous hair? By Carl from Robot

O V E R ST Y L E D hair, complicated styling and highmaintenance cuts … that’s just not us at Robot Hair. When it comes to keeping up to it at home, it should be as simple as 123. It’s fine to spend a little more time on your hair if you’re going out, but, from day-to-day, there should be no fuss. Finding this sort of style should be left to your hairdresser. There’s no use waving an image around and expecting to be

transformed, if your hair’s not going to work with that particular style. If you go with what you have, and not with what you want, it will always look at its best. Never “force” hair to do what it shouldn’t, because this is why some cuts work - and some don’t. Recently, in the salon, a new client was transformed with a new cut she had always wanted, but never

managed to achieve. This was because her previous stylist hadn’t listened, and created something it was thought she wanted. Sometimes you have to be flexible, but you should leave the salon feeling that there was a compromise, and that both parties agreed with what was to happen. Cutting hair is an art, and getting it right means that it stays in place for weeks after you leave the salon. Getting it wrong means leaving with something you don’t like, and you’ll be unwilling to return to the salon. That’s not what anyone wants, so finding the cut that fits you like a glove is the secret to you always looking your best, when it comes to your hair

Fashion to die for By Carl Pattison

THIS is not fashion, and it isn’t how women are supposed to look, yet we still get bombarded with images of overly-thin models strutting down the catwalk.

So, in this day-andage, when celebrity status is so important to some, and being glamorous is the goal of many women, why are images like this still being portrayed in fashion shows? Some women can’t help being slim, yet the girls who are draped in designer clothing aren’t

really suffering from any natural illness. They choose, and are forced, to look like this to portray a body type that looks “good” in expensive clothes, when the average woman is now a size 16. There aren’t enough plus-size models around, or mannequins in our stores. When will the fashion industry wake up to this fact, and

portray women as they really are - “real” people with curves, lumps and bumps, like many of us? We all like to look good, but we also like to see clothes on women with body shapes like us, don’t we? Until our conception changes of what a woman should look like, this horrendous look will continue. The fashion houses need to think about what this conveys to a regular/larger woman, and her dislike of her body if it doesn’t fit the stereotypical image of a “model” figure. We are all born with irregular shapes, and it’s high time the companies who dress us took notice.

By Miruna Voicu MANY people who buy a Tenerife property come over to the island strictly for that purpose, and then need to leave and return to their everyday lives.

But in this situation, what do you do about all the other matters that need to be addressed? Very often, changes are essential to bring any pre-owned property up to your personal standards. This could be as little as replacing mattresses and sofa, or could include fitting a new kitchen or bathroom, or even more major building works. If you are buying a new property, it will probably come with no lightfittings or appliances, so, even though it is a new-build, there is a lot of work to be done. How do you go about choosing someone for this work, and then organising these important issues when you can’t remain on the island to supervise them? You don’t speak Spanish, and you don’t know who to trust! One solution is to deal with an interior designer, who will sit with you and get a feel for your requirements. This will include what you intend to use the property for - holidays, rental or retirement, for example. You can also explain

any of your interior decoration preferences. Some people have clear ideas about colour and style, and some don’t know where to start! Interior designers will take into account all these factors, and come up with a theme to suit you personally, using your feedback either in person, or via email, until you reach an agreement on the finished design. They can then also take over responsibility for managing the property through to completion. If you decide to have the kitchen and bathroom(s) refitted, for example, the interior designer will have all the necessary local contacts, and be fully aware which companies or individuals have a good reputation for the standard of their work,

and competitive pricing. Acting as key-holder, they can also supervise the work being done, and co-ordinate the purchase, delivery and installation of furniture and fittings at the appropriate time. If you are starting from scratch, they can also ensure that you have all the necessary inventory, right down to the teaspoons and the bed linen. This means that you can return to Tenerife to your refurbished and furnished property, ready to occupy, and this interior design-andproject management service is extremely cost-effective. Deco Nuevo, on 922 789 729, offer all the services mentioned, and are happy to give free estimates, without obligation.

Baton-twirler made good AS a two-year-old tot, twirling the baton alongside her older sister, little could she have known that, one day, she’d become a shining light in Tenerife’s mostsuccessful musical. “We started in the Majorettes when we were very young, and took part in parades and competitions,” said twenty-four-year- old Michelle Terri Almgill. Now, she’s a leading cast member of Showtime’s The Sound of Musicals, in Costa Adeje. The pretty singerdancer, from the East Yorkshire town of Market Weighton, has lived in Tenerife for nearly 18 years, arriving here as a seven-year-old. “I’ve really spent more of my life with Spanish people,” she said. “My mum, Carol, sent some CVs over here because she was fed up with England, and she got a job doing animation, including teaching linedancing and organising games. “She came over on her own at first, and then I followed with my uncle and Nana, and my sister, Maxine. “Maxine and I were put into a Spanish school, and it was difficult to start with. We were both crying our eyes out on our first day, but there was an English girl, Jade, in my class, who helped me a lot. We’re still friends.” Maxine, 27, whose little boy, Jayden, will be three in May, is a talented dancer, here on the island. Michelle started singing when she was seven, and used to perform in the bars. She won Tenerife Pop Idol at the age of 11, and teamed up with popular singer Cy Benson. She added: “When I was 16, I started doing shows in the hotels, professionally. I was in the Queen tribute show, We Will Rock You, and I did burlesque as well as rock-and-roll shows.” Michelle has been performing in The Sound of Musicals since November 2014, having known the girl who was leaving the show at the time. “We all get on so well,” she said. “There’s never a day when we don’t

absolutely crack up over something, m a k i n g jokes and doing silly things in the dressing room. We should film a video showing what goes on backstage because it’s so funny.” All the cast members lead busy lives outside Showtime, and Michelle is no exception. “I go to college in Adeje every afternoon, Monday to Friday, to study tourism,” she said. “I want to have something behind me, and tourism is worldwide. “It’s a two-year course, and I’m studying German because we have to learn another language. But I didn’t like school, and didn’t finish my studies properly. “I didn’t have a learning habit, or really know what I wanted to do, and I went straight into shows. I wish I’d done more when I was younger, like having piano lessons, and made the most of my time. “When you’re young you just want to grow up, and, when you do, you want to be young again! “I find psychology very interesting, and wish I’d studied it. I’m not a person who thinks a lot, and I’m very impulsive. I don’t regret anything I do, though. Once it’s done it’s already gone, and in the past!” Apart from being a talented performer, Michelle has been a receptionist and also spent a couple of years working in the taxi office at the airport. But singing and dancing are her favourite ways of earning a living! “You have to keep on top of things every day,” she said. “I work out at the gym in the morning, then I sort my food out. After that, I go to college. “I eat cleanly - veg, fruit and protein - and drink four litres of water a day. “I’ve lost 12kgs over the last 3-4 years, and changed my body completely from what it used to be. But I’ve got to be careful because I can’t eat certain foods such as dairy,

Interview by Val Sainsbury

Michelle Terri Almgill or drink coffee before I sing because it creates phlegm. “So I have to look after my voice by drinking lots of water, not talking too much, and getting enough sleep! “In a few weeks, we’ll be altering the concept of the show. We have a lot of people who keep coming back to see us, so it’s good for everybody to have a change. We’re all really enthusiastic about it, and we’ll start rehearsing soon. “I don’t get much time to myself, because I’m so busy. On my evenings off I prefer to stay in, or meet up with friends. I’m more of a morning person, so I like to go to bed early! “I’ve always concentrated more on singing than dancing, and I reached a point in 2013 when I didn’t like what I was hearing,” she admitted. “So I had private singing lessons at the AMAE school of Singing, Dancing and Acting in Los Cristianos. “I went there for two years and really improved, but then I had problems with allergies to things like cats and dust-mites. My

nose was blocked and I had trouble with my sinuses, which affected my singing. “An operation on my nose last December has helped me a lot, and I feel much better now, with no head pain. I need to keep active for the show. “My goal, as an artist, is to be as versatile as possible. That’s why I’ve done so many different shows … to get as much experience as I can. Whatever type of song I’m asked to sing, I will. “I want to keep singing and doing what I’m doing for as long as possible, and keep getting better. I always try to get the best out of me, and always want to improve!” A grateful Michelle said: “Thanks to my Mum and Maxine, for always supporting me.”

The Sound Of Musicals is on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 8pm. To book tickets (residents discounts available), please call 669 622 622

Sport

3rd February - 9th February 2017

Palms second in cue WITH the Division One title in the Direct Telecom Pool League already decided, attention has turned to the race for runners-up spot, and it was all-change this week. Phoenix Potters, who are in the mix, had a difficult game at Gaffers A, who were crowned champions last week. There was no sign of them taking it easy, though, as they stunned Potters by taking a 4-0 lead. And their momentum carried them swiftly to 7-0, and the points. Potters saved face by picking up some late frames, but the damage had already been done. Tenerife Hammers A, in second place, were confident as they travelled to Amarilla Golf to face Terrace Bantams. They soon took a 2-0 lead. but Bantams rallied and levelled the score. Wez then put Hammers A back in the lead, but that was their only frame of the middle section as Bantams won three in a row to move into pole position. The visitors needed a turnaround, and, when they took the first frame of the final session, it was game-on. But Bantams were not done. Con took the next frame, followed by Pete, who made it three out of three to win the match. Palms A capitalised on their setback to move into second spot. They

were at home to Rewind Rewired, and, despite losing Roscoe early doors to illness, they put in a solid performance. The early frames were tight, with the teams well-matched. But Palms A used all their years of league experience, and, once they gained the lead. they held their nerve to ensure the win. Their man of the match was JT, stepping in and winning two from two. Palms Elite faced Dreamers A, with both teams seeking a topfive finish. This fixture is always close, and so it proved again. They each took early frames with tight pool, and it looked as though the game could be drawn. However, Dreamers A took advantage of a Palms Elite slip for a slender lead. The home side responded, but just couldn’t get back into the match, leaving Dreamers A to drag themselves over the line for the points, which moved them above their opponents. The bottom of the table features a relegation fight between Bluebell A and Terrace Roosters. They both have just three games to play, and both face tough challenges in the next two matches before meeting each other in the final game. Roosters had a tough match against Treehouse A but they made a great

start with a 3-1 lead, which filled them with confidence. Unfortunately for them, though, going behind seemed to awaken Treehouse, who moved into a higher gear and won the next session 3-1 to level at 4-4. Roosters were rattled, mistakes crept in and the visitors took full advantage, easing into a lead they retained. Bluebell A, at Rewind A and with an eye on their remaining fix-

tures, knew this represented a great chance to take some points. But Rewind A had home advantage and soon moved into a lead, which proved too much for the visitors. Bluebell A put up an impressive fight, but they just couldn’t roll in the black ball. And Rewind A’s success guarantees them first division pool next season! In Division Two, the title race will go down to the wire. But this

week saw a change at the top as Picasso’s A, who have led for most of the season, were not in action. This paved the way for James Hammers C to take top spot. They were at Hoppys A and made a great start with a 3-1 lead, which filled them with confidence. This showed in the middle section as they took four in a row to secure the points, moving to the top of the league. Picasso’s A have a game in hand, but the pressure is now on them to pick up the points! There was just one other match played in Division Two, which saw Treehouse B continue their recent good form. Their opponents

were Palms Rebels, who have had a decent maiden season. It was a tight clash between two evenlymatched teams, but Treehouse B took full home advantage and squeezed into a slender lead. They had to dig deep to hold on, but managed it to welcome another decent win. This weekend sees the annual TenerifeScotland match, and it would be pleasing to see plenty of supporters cheering on our Tenerife team. If you want to come along, Saturday night’s games will be in the Palms Sports Bar, in Torviscas, from 8pm, and then on Sunday in the Terrace Bar, Amarilla Golf, from 2pm.

Ladies football

It’s all gone topsy-turvy

IT wasn’t just the FA Cup springing surprises last weekend. Tenerife’s teams in the Ladies Primera League swapped current form.

Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife were beaten 1-0 at home by Real Sociedad, while rockbottom Tacuense

secured their first win of the season with a hardfought 3-2 victory at Real Betis. Pride of place goes to La Laguna-based Tacuense. It has been a punishing season for them after winning promotion last year, and not many people would have backed them to break their duck on the mainland. Celia threw down the challenge with a

19th-minute goal for the visitors, but Betis pegged it back three minutes later through Laura Gonzalez.

It was turning into a test of character. But Tacuense stood firm for the remainder of the first half, then inflicted

a double blow on Betis just after the restart. Nisa regained the lead and Pachu made it 3-1 from the penalty spot soon after. There was a nerveracking end as Clau pulled one back for the home team with 10 minutes left. But Tacuense showed determination to protect their victory. They are still bottom of the league, but are

now within touchingdistance of the teams above them, fuelling hopes of escaping the drop. Tenerife knew it would be a tight, tactical contest against Real Sociedad at El Medano. But it was still a shock to lose by a single, 62nd-minute goal, scored by Ane from a corner. Yet Tenerife are still in fifth place.

Tier Two’s tungsten-tight! A QUICK scan of last Friday’s results in Division 2 shows what an extremely competitive league this is. Six matches won by the odd leg, including five of the wins coming via the last rubber, plus one draw.

But our star player this week is young Shaz, who must have been delighted with her night’s work. She fired in her first maximum, even though her Picassos team lost the trebles and the match to league leaders The

Tavern. Palms Pool Bar took the short walk around the corner to face Waterfall, where they lost the last rubber to share the points with their local rivals, while Rood won the last point at Bar 180 having already lost the match. Bar Leones had already been beaten by Sundowners when they held the trebles leg, but Clouseaus, Marilyns A and Marilyns B all tasted victory, courtesy of final-leg wins. We hate postponements in this league, especially when it gifts eight points to the opposition. And at this stage of the campaign, it’s very naughty! However, Division 1 Pas O Nadas A managed to limit the damage done by beating Playboys 7-1, with Richard’s 23rd 180. And that is confirmed as a record

for the Oasis Fm darts league. Well done Daddy Cool! But things didn’t go to well for Phoenix Bar, who lost at home to Exiles, despite London’s 111 checkout and 5th maximum.

No speed limits for roller derby ROUGH, tough, and fast … that´s roller derby, and it is thriving in Tenerife.

Yes, it conjures up thoughts of America, razzmatazz, and the famous Raquel Welch film Kansas City Bomber. But tomorrow (Saturday), an eager few will gather in Santa Cruz to see Tenerife Roller Derby v Helsinki

Queen Bs in the Pancho Camurria sports hall, from 6-8pm. Two years ago, a team of local girls played Batter C Power from London, and it was great fun, with loads of skill and some bruising action. Just the players’ names were enough to frighten the wary: Lady McDeath, Lex Plode, and Jackie The Ripper, among others. It took seven officials to

run the game and keep up with the scoring, and it’s based on one team’s skaters trying to pass the others, who employ blockers, and jammers! There was more elbow action than in the January Sales! Tomorrow’s game marks the five-year anniversary of one of the first games in Spain, involving a Helsinki team competing in Madrid. Like many minority sports, the players have to be dedicated to fit in late-night training, and to cope with the odd bruise or worse. With opponents few and far between, games are not on a regular basis. But if you want to know more and, maybe, watch a game, you can find Tenerife Roller Derby on Facebook.

Hoop Heroes’ high hopes DOMESTIC matters are not being overlooked as Iberostar Tenerife await their opponents in the last 16 of the European Champions League.

After winning qualifying Group D, Tenerife will face PAOK Salonica or Partisan Belgrade in a homeand-away match-up. Meanwhile, Tenerife strengthened their grip on second spot in the Liga Endesa, winning 82-76 at Betis. They won the first and third quarters 18-13 and 25-20 to ensure they kept their hosts at bay. Aaron Doornekamp top-scored with 17 points and San Miguel weighed in with 15. You wouldn’t guess from their results, but

Tenerife have been running with a short squad because of injuries. That’s why they have just taken on Tariq Kirksay, a 37-year old French-American guard, born in The Bronx, New York.

Tariq, a French international who loves to travel, has graced eight leagues with 12 teams, including stopovers in Italy, France. And his last home was with Angola League side Primeiro de Agosto.

Dani: None shall pass!

By Colin Kirby

YOU tight bunch! Tenerife’s defence kept the play-off pot simmering and made it 300 minutes without conceding a league goal.

Much of the credit goes to having a back-four who pick themselves every game. And the stability stems from the awesome form of Venezuelan Dani Hernandez. The inspirational keeper had another cracking game, including saves from four corners when Sevilla threatened to make a breakthrough. Alberto is another big factor, sitting in front of

Seville Atletico 0 CD Tenerife 0 the defence. He is calm, assured and the most improved player this season. There were a few scary moments. In the first half, a long boot upfield from the Sevilla keeper had Raul Camara struggling to clear the ball, and a home striker got a clear, but slightly high, shot at goal. Aaron had the best chances to turn one point into three. In the first half, he curled in a free-kick that the Atletico keeper fumbled before catching. Then, in the second half, Aaron beat a defender twice before firing a shot at the keeper. Hernandez must have radar because

a long, swirling shot from Sevilla left him unsighted until the last second. Yet he still

managed to turn the ball away. Then Jorge Saenz pounced on a defensive

Play-off challenge looms

LAST Friday saw the 4th Annual Eric Bristow par 3 golf challenge at Los Palos in Guaza, sponsored by Sebastian St James and supported by Oasis Fm and Canarian Weekly, in aid of San Miguel Lions Club. At 8.15am the hooter sounded, the players teed off … and the rain held off for a great fun tournament that never fails to raise a smile. Eric’s mates, John Lowe and Dennis Priestley, were there to support him. In fact, John was actually trying to defend the title. Lions Club volunteers were on course to collect five-euro penalties for going in the water, and this proved quite fruitful, our very own Chris Elkington having to put his hand in his pocket a few times! The competition comprised teams of four playing a Stableford tournament. This means that all players had a chance to score points on every hole. And, after two rounds of the 9-hole, par 3 course, everyone headed to Shambles Bar, Los Cristianos, for the presentation, raffle, and an afternoon of entertainment. Eric and main sponsor Phil Spearling, from Sebastian St James, presented the winners’ trophy to Alan, Steve, Ray, and Eric (not that one) from LA’s Bar,

CD Marino 2 CD Vera 0 By Colin Kirby MARINO, back to their best and hungry for victory, made light work of Puerto de la Cruz side Vera, moving up to fifth spot and just outside the promotion play-offs. They were strong at the back and full of creative ideas up front, giving Vera a torrid time. Little tweaks to the playing system can bring great rewards. Saul played the central target-man, allowing Adan to ghost in from deep. The ploy paid off within five minutes. Fran Alonso had already roasted two Vera defenders down the right, and a followup raid saw him feed the ball across to incoming Adan, who crashed the ball home. Adan then followed up with a long shot that drifted wide. Vera had plenty of fight in them, Josue forcing a corner which home keeper Marko plucked out of mid-air with ease. Mendy, also on top form, made a groundshaking tackle on Vera’s main striker Amorin, before the tall front man was denied by Marko at the post from another corner. Marino used their width, and both fullbacks, to fire up assaults on Vera’s half. The

yellows played the offside rule well, helped by late calls from the linesman, but Marino would not be discouraged. Captain Kevin Castro, always a danger, was floored just in front of goal and had a strong penalty claim turned down. Victor had the best chance of the game for Vera, but, though wellplaced with room and time, he sliced his shot clear of the goal. Saul was having one of his best games for Marino, and his strong running and eye for a half-chance worried the opposition. But keeper Borja stretched well to get a touch to a Saul shot that looked destined to beat him. It must have been a rousing half-time team talk in the Vera changing room because they came out with a more adventurous style. But their finishing wasn’t quite up to their approach work. Victor had a clear shot at goal but passed to Josue, who was kept out at the far post by a commanding Marko. Marino soon imposed themselves again, Lolo chesting down a cross not far out from goal but unable to find a blue shirt

to cash in on his control. And Brad Mills cut in from the right and launched a long shot that wasn’t far off. Amed came off the bench for Saul, adding speed and power on the left, with Adan taking a more central striking role. It worked like a charm, Adan beat defender Gil and drew the keeper before slotting the ball past him to cap a fine personal performance. But credit to Vera, who would not give up. Josue led the charge, but Marko was equal to everything they tried, a full-length dive and a two-fisted clearance being the pick of his saves. At the other end, Amed powered his way through for a couple of good attempts, which Vera’s keeper did well to turn away. And with Marko solid at the other end, there was no further scoring. There’s another home game on Sunday, at noon, when runaway leaders Las Palmas Atletico come calling. They are full of goals, having put five past Ibarra last week. But if Marino can match their Vera performance, it should be one of the best games of the season.

blunder but blasted his attempt sky-high. But an away point is always welcome, setting it up nicely for the 5pm home game with Elche tomorrow (Saturday). The new recruits Just before the January transfer window closed at midnight on Tuesday, Tenerife completed their recruitment drive with two new loan-signings joining Tyronne, who arrived a week earlier from Las Palmas. Gaku Shibasaki, a 24-year-old attacking midfielder from Japan, made a name for himself last December by scoring twice in the World Club Championship against Real Madrid.

It put the hot favourites 2-1 down, and they needed a hat-trick from Ronaldo before running out mightilyrelieved 4-2 winners. Shibasaki is the second Japanese footballer on the island because Ayano Dozono plays for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife ladies. Rachid Ait-Atmane, born in Bobigny, France, who also has Algerian qualification through his family, has played for the Algerian Under-21 team. The midfielder will be 24 tomorrow (Saturday). That leaves the final tally for January leavers at three, Marc Crosas, Alex Garcia, and Jairo, and three coming in.

Eric Bristow Golf Day IV

also in Los Cristianos, who came in first with a commendable 145pts, edging out the defending champions by two points. Gordon McDonald had the highest individual score, of 42, and the two nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Becks, of team John Lowe on the 10th hole (just 22cm away), and by James Fenner (of James Place La Caleta, but in team

Oasis Fm) on the 9th hole, 95cm away. After the presentation, Susan Solomon, San Miguel Lions President, and her Secretaryhusband Ralph, were delighted to announce that 3,130 euros had been raised on the day for various children’s charities. All in all, a fun day had by everyone … so, same time, same place next year!
