Spain’s Trump worry over its export trading
SPAIN’S export sector is becoming worried about US president Donald Trump’s protectionist policies, fearing it could cost them trade. Franchises and concessions are less affected, since they are deeply-rooted into the business fabric in the United States, but other industries, such as that of renewable energy, foresee problems ahead, especially given the new President’s approach to environmental issues. The US is Spain’s main, nonEuropean trading partner and its sixth-largest export destination, behind France, Germany, Italy, the UK and Portugal. And the North American country accounts for over $10bn of Spanish companies’ overseas trade. Most goods imported from Spain by the US are food and drink items, renewable energy, motor parts and vehicles, and other semi-manufactured produce. Yet the Spanish Government remains optimistic about its future US trade relations. Economy Minister Luis de Guindos is confident that the European Union could even benefit from an increase
in protectionism across the pond. He believes that the old continent would be able to attract investments from countries which cease or reduce trading with America. As Alfredo Bonet, international director of Spain’s Chamber of Commerce, says: “Investors and importers seek stability in their trade partners and, if the US puts up too many obstacles, the EU bloc could be seen as a viable alternative.” However, Bonet says Spain and Europe will have to wait to find out “how Trump’s words will translate into reality”, since any threat to, or reduction in cross-border trading, may be a concern because of World Trade Organisation (WTO) rules, which limit increases in customs duty to its members. According to analysts Credit & Caution, the measures
currently adopted by Trump may well mean increasing barriers to international trade. But in Spain’s case, the US is just a small part of its story. Improved relations between the US and Russia means the food sector, in particular, may be able to increase its sales in the latter, says the consultancy. Spanish exports to the US were down by 2.3% in 2016 to almost 10.3bn euros, while imports from the North American nation were down 1.7%, to just over 11.6bn euros. That left Spain with a trade deficit to the US of 1.36bn euros. Among the most-sold products to the US by Spain are refined petroleum, human and animal blood (for medical use, such as vaccinations), and cars and car engines. Last year alone, Spain exported nearly 38,300 cars to the US, which is the secondlargest market for the southern European country for vehicle parts. It means the motor industry is waiting expectantly and apprehensively to see what happens next. Spain’s Motor Parts Manufacturers’ Association (SERNAUTO) says the free trade deal across North America - the US, Canada and Mexico - is crucial to its export industry.
But Trump has already declared that this agreement will soon go the same way as the Trans-Pacific Pact (TPP), from which the Republican President has withdrawn the country. Food and drink produce from Spain, sold in the US, is led by the wine industry, particularly cava and other sparkling wine, and those with official declarations of origin.
“If the US puts up too many obstacles, the EU bloc could be seen as a viable alternative.” Alfredo Bonet Although a small market slice, Spanish wine still accounts for 275.4m euros spent annually by the US. But the Spanish Wine Federation reveals that, unlike France, which sells the produce mostly unlabelled as cheap table or cooking wine, this beverage from Spain in the US occupies a slot on the “quality” shelves. That means this market is easier to expand than if it were merely trying
to compete on price. France was, until 2016, Spain’s third-largest wine export destination, but the US overtook that nation last year in its expenditure on topnotch Spanish drinks, and buys 84 million litres, which is the equivalent of 112 million bottles. The difference in profit against quantity is that the average sum paid for Spanish wine at cost price is a mere 1.05 euros a litre, or 0.79 cents a bottle, to most of its other export destinations. But in the US, the price at source is an average 3.42 euros a litre, or 2.57 euros a bottle. Spain also exports 269m euros of olive oil to the US, a market the Association of Olive Oil Export Trade and Industry (ASOLIVA) believes has great capacity to grow. That’s because the US consumes around 330,000 tonnes of oil a year, yet produces just 6,000 tonnes, nearly all of which comes from California. As for direct investment, the latest Chamber of Commerce data reveal that the US is No.1 in Spain, accounting for 15.1% of foreign funds, and the thirdlargest destination for Spain, with 13% of the country’s overseas investments going to the US.
I’ll be go-between for Trump, offers Rajoy Continued from front He also promised to do likewise for North Africa and the Middle East, during his 15-minute chat. Rajoy claimed his country was in the “best condition to take on the role of interlocutor”, because of its
“stable government, and an economy growing by more than 3%”. He also said he was willing to “develop a good relationship with the new United States administration”, while Trump was reported to have spoke of the “closeness and
affection of the Americans towards the Spanish”. For his part, President Trump also told the Spanish PM that he was committed to NATO, according to the White House. Its statement, summarising the call, added that Trump “emphasised the importance
of all NATO allies sharing the burden of defence spending”. The two leaders also pondered the future of the EU, Rajoy insisting he would work hard to foster greater integration between EU states following Brexit. Security and defence were
also on the agenda, because of the countries’ joint control of the two Spanish military bases in Rota and Moron. And both parties were said to have agreed to continue collaborating in the areas, especially in the fight against Daesh.

Fraud rat Rodrigo? RODRIGO Rato, a veteran Spanish politician who served as an International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief and senior government official with the governing Popular Party (PP), has been accused of tax evasion totalling 6.8m euros between 2004 and 2015. That’s the verdict of the Tax Agency’s fraud investigation unit. In its 634-page report, filed in court on 23rd January, the National Fraud Investigation Office (ONIF) details the alleged unlawful activities by the network of companies owned by Rato, in Spain and abroad. The report is the result of a probe lasting nearly two years into the former minister’s activities. It followed his brief arrest in April 2015 while his home and office were raided by police in search of incriminating evidence. Rato received an average of 36,136 euros per talk between 2007 and 2014. And the analysis concludes that Rato had undeclared income of slightly over 14m euros between 2004 and 2015. This represents tax fraud of close to 6.8m euros over the period. On every one of those years,
ESTIMATES by the Finance Ministry, outlined in a report on the Spanish economy, predicts that taxes will provide at least 14.6bn euros more revenue to the public coffers this year than in 2016.
The report also reveals that the Spanish Government may have under-estimated growth. Finance Minister Cristóbal Montoro predicts that nominal growth (GDP and inflation) will be around 4% for this year. But if inflation remains at similar levels to those of January 2016, when it grew by 3%, then tax revenue could increase. Price rises feed tax collection: when the cost of goods and services increase, the base that VAT, or sales tax, is applied, broadens, which is why the government
barring 2005, the evaded total was higher than the 120,000euro threshold which, under Spanish legislation, represents a tax crime. Between 2009 and 2015, the years for which the crimes have not yet prescribed, “the amounts were close to 5.4m euros,” according to the report. Investigators found several methods used by Rato to divert these funds, including
failure to declare payments for speaking engagements, and claiming expenses which were non-deductible. Rato, also head of Bankia, which had to be nationalised, was once Spain’s Deputy Prime Minister and Economy Minister. But he is adamant: “The report originated from an accusation of asset-stripping that was used for my arrest, even though it was proven
false within two weeks. “The report contains false or erroneous data that the Tax Agency had the ability to detect a long time ago, since it was in its files. I am analysing the report and I will issue a reply.” The ONIF report says Rato used the Panama-based firms Red Rose Limited and Westcastle, British company Vivaway and Spanish concern Kradonara “to conceal income that escaped the tax authorities, and whose effective beneficiary was Rato. “The undeclared amounts are slightly over 7m euros. The risk-countries used were Luxembourg, Monaco, Switzerland, Britain and Gibraltar.” The report also states that Rato worked as an advisor for Spanish telecoms giant Telefónica in 2013, 2014 and 2015, making 730,000 euros in the process. Yet none of this income was declared. Instead, Telefónica paid Kradonara, a company controlled by Rato, which was, in turn, invoiced by Arada, another Rato firm which does not pay taxes because of its accumulated losses. Arada is considered by investigators to be a key element in Rato’s corporate network. The company has also received payments from tax havens, and from
Spanish revenue to rise by 14.6bn
expects revenue from VAT to increase by 9.3%. Inflation is often dubbed by experts as a tax on the poor, because it also eats away at purchasing power. The Finance Ministry’s figures indicate that sales tax will reach 68.2bn euros by the end of this year, and will set a new high for the fourth year running. Income tax revenue should also increase, by 7.5%, reaching a record 78.1bn euros. The anticipated 2017 increase in tax revenue coincides with the decision to extend last year’s budget. But, as a result of the two inconclusive 2016 elections, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s ruling Popular Party was unable to form a government until October.
Rajoy, leading a minority administration, and with the opposition Socialist Party in disarray, has so far decided to postpone putting his budget before Congress. So he will not be proposing any stimulus measures for the economy. The sharp increase in public revenue, combined with a freeze on public spending because of the budget
extension, will absorb a large part of the cuts Brussels is demanding to reduce the deficit. But Spain will have to reduce the budget deficit from 4.6% of GDP to 3.1% this year, equivalent to spending cuts of some 16bn euros. Public investment will remain at historic lows over the coming months. The Finance Ministry calculates
Rato’s speaking engagements. “It has enough tax credit to ensure that owed taxes are reduced to nil euros,” notes the report. Following his tenure as IMF chief, between 2004 and 2007, Rato returned to Spain and delivered 39 speeches, which he charged through Arada. Between 2007 and 2014 he invoiced 1,409,334.38 euros, representing an average of 36,136 euros per talk. Rato, Once a powerful PP figure, has since fallen from grace and has become entangled in three criminal investigations. Besides his alleged tax irregularities in his private business dealings, the courts are investigating kick-backs he is alleged to have accepted to favour specific firms while he headed Bankia, which had to be nationalised in 2012. Rato is also being investigated in connection with the “black” credit cards, issued secretly by Bankia and predecessor Caja Madrid, to its top executives. The monthly credit on each card, which beneficiaries used for personal purposes, was not counted as part of their wages, and the money went undeclared. Perversely, some would say, Rato is named No.1 on People With Money’s top-10 highest-paid politicians for 2017 with an estimated $75m in combined earnings!
that it will be around 24.2bn euros, equivalent to 2.1% of GDP. Current expenditure, which, traditionally, drives the economy, will grow by a few million euros, but well below GDP growth, which, in relative terms, will represent a smaller slice of the publicspending cake. Nothing has been said about civil servants’ wages, while pensions will increase by just 0.25%. Income tax revenue should increase by 7.5%, reaching a record 78.1bn euros, while improvements in the labour market, albeit at the expense of low wages, will also help boost the state’s coffers. Revenue from corporate tax will increase by 7.8%, driven mainly by new changes to the law limiting deductions. And the Finance Ministry estimates that this will raise 22bn euros by the end of the year, which is half the amount of the maximum registered a decade ago, on the eve of the crisis.

New taxi licences ADEJE has issued 15 new taxi licences for the borough, and, says Transport Councillor Andrés Pérez Ramos: “They will add quality to what is already an excellent service. “We have been working to improve the taxi sector in the borough - a sector important to the destination for visitors and residents.
These licences will meet an identified need in a balanced way.” He added: “They have been granted following a socio-economic study of the existing demand, and potential growth in the borough.” Drivers interested in applying for a licence must meet certain requirements, and present the documentation outlined

If successful, it would allow adults with terminal illnesses and those in “insufferable pain” to request help to end their lives. A document presented to Congress, the lower house of parliament, stresses that people would also have to be sound of mind, conscious, and wanting

Group spokeswoman María Sibina argued: “Spain is not a good place to die”, through lack of quality, palliative care. A chilling reminder, but it’s just a blaze SCREAMING sirens with fire engines and police support, converging on the centre of Los Cristianos on Monday morning, brought chilling reminders of last April’s fatal building collapse.
On this occasion, fortunately, the cause was an electrical fire in an underground garage at Edificio Los Cristianos 2, in Avenida Los Playeros, which affected just four people, who suffered smoke inhalation. But it was a grim warning of other possible dangers in the old, tightly-packed heart
of Los Cristianos. Three fire engines raced to the scene after residents heard one loud explosion followed by two smaller ones. And thick, black smoke billowed out of the building’s small, stairwell entrance at the other end of the block, to a wider ramp entrance, used by cars, which was smoke-free. The building had already been evacuated, but some people had taken to the roof when the alarm was raised. One of the most pressing concerns was the closeness of the petrol station opposite, which was closed and included in the area cordoned off from the public by police. Frederick Velazquez, a
“We were very frightened because there was a tremendous explosion and then two smaller ones.” resident in the building, said. “We were very frightened because there was a tremendous explosion and then two smaller ones. “I thought it was a gas bottle, but then we were told it was in the electrical room in the basement.” As firemen in breathing equipment put out and dampened down the fire, smoke continued to fill the street. Two people
were treated for breathing difficulties on a bench outside the Coviran supermarket across the road. The scene of last year’s building collapse, just below the back entrance of this same supermarket, was not lost on those flocking to the scene. After a few hours, the emergency-services’ teams started to withdraw, and it was the turn of electrical
experts to find out more about the cause, and any knock-on effects. The road was re-opened for through-traffic, but the electrical power had been switched off completely in Avenida Los Playeros (formerly Ave Juan Carlos) and Calle Amalia Alayon, down to the Church Plaza. Endesa and Cobra electric companies worked through into the evening, not only down in the garage area, but also under metal-inspection covers in the street. Happily for homes and businesses, full power was restored the next morning.
Touch of luxury on Golf del Sur IN 18 months, San Miguel’s Golf del Sur should have its first 5-star luxury hotel at a cost of 50 million euros. And what a beauty it promises to be.
An aquatic park, plus a spa and three speciality restaurants feature among the attractions in the plans announced at Madrid’s recent international tourism trade fair FITUR. Building of the hotel, as yet unnamed, will begin in a month on the 44,960sq/m site of a long-abandoned building project, a victim of the dreaded recession. The tower of the original, part-built construction, has become a well-known
landmark, but a cause of embarrassment for some residents on the Golf. But the site’s transformation, from an eyesore to an area of beauty, will give the skyline a modern look. San Miguel de Abona Mayor Arturo Gonzalez unveiled the new plans, alongside
Tenerife President Carlos Alonso and Pablo Piñero, President of construction company Grupo Piñero, which will be responsible for the new development. There will be 500 rooms in the junior suite (deluxe category), some with two beds, and king-size rooms
for three adults and two children. The three restaurants will be gourmet, Italian, and grill. In addition, there will be six bars scattered around the complex. And families will find plenty to please them: a second pool, of 700sq/m, just for
children, plus an adventure park, and mini-golf, which will ensure there’s never a dull moment. All this will generate 500 direct jobs, as well as others inspired by the hoped-for increase in trade on Golf del Sur. Mayor Arturo Gonzalez was full of pride for the benefits the hotel will bring to San Miguel de Abona. “The land where the hotel will be built is one of the most important areas of our coast,” he said. “It will boost the recuperation of this area, with the new beach at San Blas to follow. “Grupo Piñero will make a tourist area, adapted from the design and style of their Bahia Principe, and it will generate jobs for sanmigueleros.”

Adeje’s home-grown talent taking pasting ADEJE’S sports department has unveiled its 2017 campaign, comprising an official sports album with over 1,300 stickers to be collected, swapped, and pasted.
And the album’s stars? Everyone who is part of a team, club or sporting association in the Adeje borough. Sports Councillor Adolfo Alonso Ferrera said: “There are no stickers of Messi or Ronaldo. The stars are the children from all our clubs and associations in Adeje … the kids who live in your building, in your neighbourhood.” Campaign organisers say that the fun the children, their parents, siblings and friends will have in swapping stickers in school playgrounds and at sporting centres, etc, will
encourage personal relations between people in the borough. The campaign will also help promote the many diverse sports featured in Adeje. It has been building interest, with a series of billboards announcing the start of something special. And even the children being photographed for the album had no idea what the pictures were really for. It kicks off later this month, before the Adeje Sports Gala on 24th February, when young athletes will be invited to the Las Torres pavilion at 5pm on that day to receive a sticker album and two packets of cards, each containing 15 stickers. From then, on albums and packets will be on sale at various outlets throughout the borough: bookshops, sports canteens, and Shell in Los Olivos, one of the main campaign sponsors.
Ascan Torrabonaf, the firm which collects the borough’s rubbish and another main sponsor, is running a recycling campaign in parallel. Halcón Viajes is also sponsoring the campaign. Each packet, costing 50 cents, will have 15 stickers, with, say the organisers, approximately 1,800,000 stickers in circulation over the coming months. It is one of the biggest campaigns of its kind, nationally, and “pioneering”, according to Cromo Club, the company which has produced the stickers. There will be over 1,300 numbered, named stickers to collect, and the albums will be colour-coded according to sports, sporting centres, etc. There will be 250,000 packs of stickers on sale in Adeje and prizes for the first three to fill their albums. And first prize will be a trip to Madrid for four people!
Squatters make life so miserable
AN abandoned building near the Los Cristianos post office, on Jama Street, is inhabited by squatters, who are creating problems continually for residents in the area. So much so that those living there have had to alert
firefighters on numerous occasions because the squatters keep lighting fires. Neighbours are tired of asking Arona Council for a solution, only for officials to ignore them and claim it is a judicial problem. You have only to approach

the building to smell the strong odour emanating from it, because of the huge piles of rubbish accumulated. One resident said: “So many accidents happen in that place, but until one of the squatters dies, the Council won’t seek a solution.”
Mums and kids menaced by teenage drug-smokers
A GROUP of mothers are calling for a police presence around El Fraile’s Cultural Centre because their children are being exposed to groups of teenagers smoking marijuana joints, the majority of them minors. A spokeswoman for the mums, who say they have called the Local Police on numerous occasions said angrily: “They never appear, and we’re tired of days going by and nothing ever happening. “The officers have said they have ‘other things more important to attend’.” One mother said: “The
teenagers are smoking joints in front of our children, who are only 6-7 years old.” And another mum stressed that the cultural centre not only featured activities for young children. “They also hold events for senior citizens, and the situation is unbearable,” she said. One mum, who was collecting her daughter, said: “You can smell what they are smoking from the classrooms, and last week it was unbearable.” A spokesman said that local community officials, concerned with the situation, are looking for options to combat the problem.
Noisy yobbo strikes out at two officers
A man has been arrested for assaulting two Guardia Civil officers in El Fraile, after standing on top of a car, and threatening residents in the area. The man of African origin, without a t-shirt on, was shouting in his own language, and attacked the officers when they tried to confront him. A witness said “the Guardia Civil tried to apprehend the
suspect, but he lashed out at them punching and kicking them hard, injuring both officers. He pushed one of them violently against the median barrier.” A neighbour called the police to send reinforcements to stop the man who continued to threaten other people. A few moments later various Guardia Civil and Local Police patrol cars arrived, and after a struggle, managed to control the attacker, who was then taken to the Guardia Civil Police Station.

Sting in the tentacle
Loro Parque safeguards an injured marine turtle MORE than 200 marine turtles arrive at wildlife recovery centres in the Canary Islands, most of them through problems related to the impact of human activities in the sea. Many of them can be healed completely and returned to the sea. And Loro Parque FundaciĂłn is always aware of its commitment to raise awareness within the Canarian society of the need to acknowledge, protect and conserve the environment and animal species. That is why an injured loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), found injured in Gran Canaria, was taken to the Tafira Wildlife Recovery Centre there and looked after. Experts later decided that the best place for its rehabilitation would be Loro Parque, where the animal spent about two months recovering in its safe Aquarium. It had then grown strong enough to return to its natural environment, which
A PLAGUE of Portuguese man of war jellyfish took over the coast of Guimar last week, with hundreds appearing on El Puertito beach, scaring sunbathers and residents. Local fishermen said this species usually appeared with tidal changes, especially in summer, which indicates that the temperature of seas in the Canaries is increasing. Although they are considered poisonous, the jellyfish do not present a great danger outside the water, although the sting can produce a rash. No wonder, because there are more than one million stinging cells in every square centimetre of the tentacles.
Roaming charges capped
is why Loro Parque staff delivered it back to the sea at Gran Canaria’s Punta Brava beach. Pascual Calabuig, Director of the Tarifa Centre, took advantage of this exciting moment to tell some 100 children from the local school about the importance of protecting the marine environment. Every year, some 200 injured sea turtles are rescued on the Canarian coasts and taken
to the recovery centres. Sadly, most of them display injuries caused by humans, or their activities. But Loro Parque maintains close cooperation with these centres, and offers a temporary home to injured animals until they have recovered enough to be released back into the ocean. The Loro Parque Foundation sees this as a fundamental commitment at a modern zoo.
THE European Union plans to cap wholesale charges paid by telephone operators to each other when their customers use mobile phones abroad. The caps were the final part of agreements needed to abolish retail roaming charges, to take effect from June. Charges for data, probably the essential part of using a mobile nowadays, will be capped at 7.70 euros per gigabyte, reducing to 2.50 euros in 2022. Caps for making calls will drop down to 32 cents per minute, and sending text messages abroad will each cost just one cent. These caps, once approved by the full European Parliament, will be reviewed every two years.

Woman just scratched as car drops 14 metres
MIRACULOUSLY, a woman of 63 suffered only minor injuries on Monday, despite toppling 14 metres down a La Laguna embankment in her car. The incident happened at 1.30pm on the Camino de Moya, Valle de Guerra, The driver was giving way to
another vehicle and, while on an upward slope, lost control. Her car rolled backwards until it flipped over, and down the embankment. But though firefighters had to release her from the vehicle, she needed just four stitches from paramedics for a slight cut on the hand. However, she was taken to hospital as a safeguard to be scanned, and to rule out any hidden lesions.
Rail boost for ports RAIL projects over the next five years in Spain to improve land access to ports will cost some 850m euros. The major projects include a 150m-euro rail connection to Barcelona port, and 4.65km of infrastructure in la Cabezuela, Cadiz, as a continuation of the route from Sevilla. Development Minister Iñigo de la Serna said freight traffic moving to and from ports by rail had grown 43% since 2011, and should reach 16.2m tonnes this year.
GRANADILLA is making good use of its past by converting the old Secadero de Tobaco into a cultural centre, which will retain links to the area’s history.
The secadero was a drying plant for tobacco leaves, built in 1878. It housed a rural trade that provided
new employment when the export of dye from cochineal beatles, which thrived on cactus, was killed off by modern, chemical dyes. The magnificent building has a special place in the hearts of people raised in Granadilla town, and it was declared a protected place of cultural interest in 2008. Plans to make better use of the building have been coming together slowly and
now, a 189,811-euro budget has been set aside for the conversion. Granadilla Council will provide 20% of the money, with the Cabildo providing the balance. As well as being a focus for the community and staging exhibitions, concerts, and shows, it will feature an excellent viewpoint upstairs, where visitors can enjoy views over the municipality and down to the coast.

SEVEN people lost their lives while fishing or shell-fishing off Canarian costs during 2016. A further six were injured badly, and one person rescued. Fuerteventura registered highest number of fatalities, with three anglers: two in the La Oliva and the third in Antigua; Lanzarote recorded two deaths, off El Golfo Beach and on La Graciosa Island. Tenerife and Gran Canarias each registered one death. Love locks and lonely farmers VALENTINE’S Day is just around the corner (Tuesday), but will you express undying love for your partner by visiting the florists, the champagne counter… or the ironmongers? That last option may sound strange, but love locks are a very unusual way to show your feelings on 14th February. Los Cristianos is the latest setting for the romantic trend of engraving both your names or initials on a padlock, clicking it on a bridge, fence, or other fixture, and throwing away the key. The harbour wall’s safety rail in Los Cristianos has a smattering of recent locks, but it has a long way to go before challenging some of the bigger cities across Europe. Once upon a time, well around 100 years ago in Serbia, during World War 1, the story goes that a young couple used to meet on Most
Lvubavi Bridge in the town of Vmanjacka Banja. Schoolteacher Nada and her Serbian army officer Relja pledged their everlasting love. But when he was called
away to serve in Greece, the bounder found another woman and left Nada to die from a broken heart. After that local couples took to engraving their names on
locks and throwing away the key, so their love could never be broken. That tale has risen and fallen in popularity over the years, bringing with it new
clusters of locks in Serbia and surrounding countries. The big explosion of interest came in 2006 when Italian author Federico Moccia wrote a novel called “I Want You”, which mentioned the gesture being made at the Ponte Milvio bridge in Rome. Since then, it has spread like wildfire. Many cities have banned the locks as thousands of them clipped to a bridge can pose a danger to the structures. Meanwhile in Los Cristianos, fishermen are being targeted as future husbands for starry-eyed ladies across Spain. The Cuatro TV channel is advertising at the port for contestants on its reality show “Granjero Busca Esposa”, based on the American format of “Farmer Wants A Wife”. The search has been widened these days to include fishermen (maybe women, too?), and anyone working in specialist jobs set mainly in rural communities. Now the fishermen are going to learn how it feels to be reeled in. Ain’t love grand!

Woman’s kidnap ordeal
A FRENCHMAN has been arrested in Puerto de la Cruz for reportedly abducting a woman, and demanding a ransom from her family. The 55-year-old forced the woman into a hotel in the La Paz district, removing the handle from the inside of the door so that she could not escape. The victim tried to tell her daughter via WhatsApp, but didn’t know which hotel she was in. Meanwhile, the kidnapper contacted her family and demanded that 6,000 euros be brought to the lobby of another hotel for her release. Police blocked the road outside this hotel, believing the woman was inside, and proceeded to arrest her kidnapper,. But even as they did, the woman managed to get out on to the balcony of the hotel she was actually in, less than 100 metres away. The Frenchman resisted arrest, but was eventually detained.

Carmen is given moo lease of life AN online petition, attracting more than 70,000 signatures, has rescued a cow called Carmen from the slaughterhouse.
Carmen, who has been diagnosed with bovine tuberculosis, can now live out her days at Madrid’s Wings of Heart animal sanctuary, in which she has spent the last two years. The refuge challenged an order by Madrid’s regional government to have Carmen put down, saying it lacked authority, and took to the social networks, using online
petition site Change.org to rally support. Within 24 hours, the campaign had gathered 70,866 signatures, prompting the authorities to come up with another solution to prevent the spread of the disease: Carmen would have to be kept in isolation. Bovine tuberculosis can be spread to other livestock and to humans, but the Wings of Heart founders questioned the tests carried out on the cow, requesting further examinations, which were refused. A source at the regional government’s Agriculture Department said it could not force the sanctuary to
put the cow down, adding: “The tests on eradication of diseases cannot be carried out by just any vet; they require particular training, which provides certification. “We cannot oblige them by law, but we recommended they did so in the interest of public health.” At a meeting between representatives of the local Agriculture Department and the Wings of Heart, it was agreed that tests would be carried out on all the refuge animals susceptible to catching tuberculosis. Also, measures would be taken to reduce the risk of those working there.

Ryanair pledging lower prices and extra flights BUDGET airline Ryanair plans to capitalise on Spain’s tourism bonanza by opening up new routes from the country where it is already the market leader.
This month, the Irish carrier is launching flights from Madrid to the Italian city of Bari, and to Glasgow and Prague, while Barcelona anticipates new services to Krakow, Luxembourg, Prague and Venice. The airline will also extend its winterflight schedule for both Madrid and the Catalan capital, and boost the number of flights on a total of 12 existing routes from the two cities. Ryanair forecasts it will carry 6.7 million people a year out of Madrid (12% more than current capacity),
while the predicted rise in passenger numbers from Barcelona is 10%, to 7.1 million. The company, headed by Michael O’Leary, built on its position as Spain’s biggest airline in 2016, carrying 34.7 million passengers. And it hopes to increase that figure to 38 million this year, according to Ryanair Marketing Director Kenny Jacobs. He said Ryanair would pass savings on to customers in the wake of a Spanish Government move to reduce airport taxes by 11% in stages, up to 2021. The average Ryanair flight last year cost 46 euros, which is expected to come down to 41 euros at the end of March. That’s against an average of 151 euros across all other airlines, according to he Irish carrier’s estimates. Jacobs said the airline would continue to focus on short-and-mediumhaul flights in Europe,
Employee’s erotic-ad pay-back on ex-boss
MURCIA National Police have detained a man for seeking revenge on his former employer by posting an erotic advert on a well-known website.
The man, whose working relationship with his former employer ended in mid2015, has been arrested for alleged coercion. The advert offered erotic massages for 20 euros, and, attempting to hide his location, the former employee placed
the advert while using a hotel’s internet in Totana, Murcia. Police began investigating recently when a woman reported that an advert had been posted on a well-known website, offering erotic, relaxing massages for 20 euros, and providing her telephone number without permission. Officers traced the advert information from the website. They also checked out who was staying in the hotel when the advert was placed, and discovered that one of the guests was the victim’s former employee.
with plans to add 220 new planes to its current fleet by 2024. He added that Ryanair was also looking at cooperating with IAG and Norwegian on long-haul flights. No-nonsense Ryanair has advised passengers that if they fail to
comply with new, more-flexible cabinbaggage rules, tougher restrictions could again be introduced. Passengers on the airline can now bring one cabin bag weighing up to 10kg, with maximum dimensions of 55cm x 40cm x 20cm,
plus one small bag up to 35cm x 20cm x 20cm on board. But Jacobs revealed that many passengers had abused the system last summer by trying to bring large pieces of luggage on board, especially backpacks. “This delays flights
and puts the airline’s punctuality record at risk,” he said. He said staff had been told to be especially vigilant when it came to cabin baggage weighing over 10kg, and to ensure that the second item of baggage was not oversize.

Smart couple hit a fantasy jackpot
SOCIAL Point’s smartphone games take place in fantasy worlds, where users can actually create cities inhabited by friendly dragons which interbreed and produce new species.
And while they might look like something out of the global phenomenon Pokémon, they were actually born in Barcelona, in a company evolving from the dream of two friends, Andrés Bou and Horacio Martos. After graduating with degrees in Computer Engineering from Barcelona Tech (UPC), they travelled
Who will cash in on convicted terrorist? SPAIN’S justice system may owe millions of euros to the heirs of a convicted Jihad terrorist, involved with Al-Qaeda, according to the General Judicial Power Council (CGPJ), the courts’ governing body. Jamal Hussein was accused of amassing millions of Iraqi dinar prior to the fall of Saddam Hussein (no relation), and the money was held by the court, despite no available evidence that the funds were connected with any criminal activity. The accused filed legal action, requesting a full refund, and for additional interest because it had been seized illegally. The CGPJ reports that Jamal Hussein had the right to compensation for the “abnormal functioning of the justice system”, which led to around 21m euros, including interest, being withheld from him. But Hussein, who died a few months ago, was
released about 10 years ago without having served any genuine part of a sentence. Shortly after his spell in custody, he was diagnosed with an aortic aneurysm, which led to his death, at around the same time as the CGPJ report confirmed his entitlement to the money. But who it is owed to is not clear, adds the report. Hussein had taken Spanish citizenship, meaning his children or, in the absence of these, his nearest blood relatives, are his automatic benefactors and he would be unable to change this by making a will, under Spanish law. He was divorced from the mother of his children, so she does not have the power to administer his affairs. Hussein’s cash was seized in 2005, but, with the Iraq war, the country’s currency became worthless, which has complicated the problem even further.
to France to learn how to set up a business. The result was the emergence of Social Point in 2008, and, since then, Horacio and Andrés, both in their early thirties, have established themselves as leaders in Spain’s videogame sector. But even they couldn’t have dreamed of what was to follow because US giant Take-Two, a publisher and distributor of video-games, whose products include the popular Grand Theft Auto series, has bought the company for $250m (around 234m euros). Yet Gonzo Suárez, co-founder of the video-game congress Gamelab, is unhappy with the transaction. “It’s a huge success for them, but a bittersweet one because successful companies always end up being sold,” he said. And he believes this often means losing their original appeal. But Horacio and Andrés, their pockets overflowing, are overjoyed, while Take-Two hopes the acquisition will strengthen its hand in the free-to-play, mobile-gaming market. The company, which until now has focused on console and PC formats, sees a proven track record of growth in Social Point that shows no sign of slowing. The reasons: a portfolio of products still to be launched in the vast Asian market. Some 300 employees, an 85m-euro turnover in 2015 and 180 million downloads … these kind of figures are way
beyond what the partners could have envisaged during their days at business school. Furthermore, 50% of revenue comes from the United States, a key factor in the multi-million acquisition. Just four years ago, Social Point’s founders had highlighted the difficulties of gaining funding in Spain. “The amounts we were looking for, between 5-6m euros, weren’t happening there,” said Andrés, back in January 2013. He believes the key to their success came from competing with the big multi-nationals, earning themselves a global reputation in the process. Dragon City and Monster Legends, their two flagships, are now played in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East and Africa. In Spain, 1% of companies in the electronic-games sector control 52% of turnover, and Social Point has a 16.7% share. José María Moreno, head of the Spanish Association of Videogames (AEVI), says the acquisition of Social Point “will allow further development of video-games in Spain, with new projects with a global dimension.” He hopes investments such as the Take-Two one “will help raise the profile of the sector in terms of economic policies”. He added that the Spanish Government should see video-games as a “strategic sector”, just as countries such as Canada have.
No pyjamas in our bar please!
IT sounds a little far-fetched, but a Malaga bar has upset local residents by banning pyjama-wearing people from its premises. Los Monaguillos will not entertain customers from entering in their “sleepwear”, for ‘hygiene reasons.’ A sign in Spanish, outside the bar, reads: “Attention. No admission to anyone wearing pyjamas or dressing gown.” While a summer ban on entering in swimwear is usually the norm, this recent move has created controversy. Some customers have stopped coming to the bar, saying they should not be judged or barred from entry on the grounds of their clothing. Yet it has become common for locals to be seen wearing pyjamas, dressing gowns or slippers on the streets in the area. Staff at Los Monaguillos said that several tourists assumed there was a hospital close by, because of the unusual number of customers wearing night attire. Just a few weeks ago, Greater Manchester’s Salford branch of Tescos issued a similar ban after some Travellers were seen wearing night gowns.

Stars in their eyes
“Tenerife will now be home to the biggest public telescope in Europe” WHEN Alex and Charles arrived in Tenerife as holiday-makers, they never expected how much they would miss the island on their return to their native Poland. And when they did go home, the couple could not get Tenerife out of their minds, and not just for the sunshine and beaches. After doing some research, their eagerness to return was heightened by learning of the astronomical potential of the island. As soon as they came back, two years ago, their joint ambition was to move tourism in a new direction, combining it with science by creating new perceptions in a fun, and exciting way, highlighting the skies above. Their plan is to open people’s eyes about their place in the universe, and how they can help preserve it. The journey to space began with their awardwinning “Stargazing Experience on Teide by Night”, and seeing for themselves the immense interest of visitors. The huge success of this tour, which has already earned them a 2015 World Tour Operator title, and the prestigious 2016 Luxury Travel Guide Global Award recently, has spurred the couple
and their company, Travel Tenerife, to take things to a higher level. In fact, they have introduced two new tours: Teide Sunrise, on which you can sleep under the stars on top of Teide, and the Cave of Winds, which explores the winding, dark caverns running under much of the island. And always, experienced guides accompany you every step of the way, explaining your adventure and offering answers to all your questions. The couple also wanted to “adjust” other Tenerife’s attractions to the way, they believe, should be offered. Along came the trekking challenges, followed by other spectacular excursions such as the caves, the island’s natural beauty and the local culture. The possibilities are endless, say Alex and Charles, and they are now in possession of Europe’s largest public telescope, which really does open ones eyes to the heavens during the day, and especially at night. Did you know, for instance, that there is a mountain range on the
moon called Montes Tenerife? It is so-named because an astronomer first observed it while at the summit of our own Mount Teide, which looks down on the whole of Tenerife. Alex 30, and Charles, a year older, once studied to be GPs in Poland but though they practised for a while, they were never registered. But are partners in every sense, and have a seven-yearold son, Maxymilian. Their new headquarters, the Astronomy and Science Centre (the former Island Village reception building), will be opening fully in November at the Playa de Las Americas complex. Meanwhile, the top floor, dedicated chiefly to astronomy, should be open in May. The lower floor dedicated to science and new technologies, will host expos of the work of young engineers, and inventors yet to be recognised. So there will be a invitation for young talents to show their work for free. Alex, who can’t wait for the opening, said: “Everybody is extremely positive, especially our stargazing clients. Tenerife is an amazing place, and looking at the stars here really does bring a warm feeling inside.” There is so much to see, and even more to take in, with Travel Tenerife, and the best way to find out how is to contact the company at Travel Tenerife.info@gmail.com

Caught
red-handed! ARONA Local Police have detained a criminal, identified only as A. J. G. D, who is believed to have burgled two homes on the same night in Valle San Lorenzo. The home-owner, who disturbed the 47-year-old offender during the first break-in, described him as a thin man with a beard, short hair, and wearing a tracksuit jacket and jeans. The intruder fled, jumping down a four-metre wall to make his escape. Local Police then saw him leaving a second property, home to a woman, 46, who was asleep in her apartment, as was her 14-year-old son. He had forced open the terrace door and stole a
Goya Award jewellery stolen from hotel room
A BRITISH paedophile, aged 70, has been arrested in Alicante in an operation co-ordinated between the Guardia Civil, the National Crime Agency in the UK and Europol. The former teacher, identified as MF, is accused of abusing more than 45 children in Thailand and the UK. He was initially identified when a contact in the Netherlands, who was
arrested for owning child pornography, had a video of MF abusing children in Thailand. The paedo was arrested in Thailand and released on bail. He was also convicted in the UK of similar offences, but jumped bail, having sold up, and moved to start a new life in Spain under an assumed name. The man, who had been a teacher for a number of years, as well as a scout leader, was accused of abusing children at his school, as well as his adopted son in the UK, before being arrested in Thailand.
Drugs’ gang held PlayStation, two mobile phones and some 500 euros in cash. The officers saw him climbing down a wall and running away. But as ran, he started dropping the valuable objects he had just stolen. The Police, who caught up with him 200m down the
road, saw him throw a flat screwdriver, which had been hidden in his jeans’ pocket, on the floor. He was accused of robbery with force, and was taken to the Police Station, where they verified that he had an outstanding arrest warrant for a previous robbery.
Goldfinger murder: Is this the breakthrough?
POLICE are investigating the theft of several items of jewellery, valued at 30,000 euros, which disappeared last Saturday from a room in Madrid’s Marriott Auditorium Hotel, where the Goya Awards were held.
Investigators have been going over security cameras at the hotel where a box, on loan from Suárez Jewellers for the gala, disappeared with rings, earrings, watches and cufflinks, According to denuncias made by the hotel’s security chief and the gala’s production manager, the jewellery box was in a hotel room, being used by the wardrobe managers, which was kept locked. It means that numerous people had access to this room. In fact, it was not until Monday, two days after the gala, that workers noticed the theft, when they began to organise the various pieces of jewellery on loan for presenters or guests attending The Cinema Academy awards. The police are now focusing their investigation on how the thieves, who took nothing other than the jewelleryladen box, gained entry to the room.

NATIONAL Police in Gran Canaria have arrested six members of a drug-trafficking gang, of African origin, said to be introducing heroin and cocaine to the island, via drug mules. Police seized 1.2kg of heroin, 35gms of crack,
plus documentation, after searching a building in Los Tarahales area, in Las Palmas, used by the gang to store and distribute the drug. The six detainees, five Ghanaians and a Nigerian, will remain in custody until the court hearing.
Spanish crop flop is nightmare for Brits A REPORT on the Essex Police Facebook site has revealed that a 50-year-old man, living in southern Spain, has returned to the UK to make a voluntary statement to police concerning the 2015 murder of convicted fraudster John Palmer. Palmer, nicknamed “Goldfinger” because of his involvement in melting down some of the gold stolen from the infamous Brinks-Mat robbery, was in his garden when shot. But initial investigations did not spot the gunshot wound because he’d previously had open-heart surgery. He was awaiting trial for fraud, firearm possession and money-laundering after
being arrested in Tenerife, his second home. Detective Chief Inspector Stephen Jennings, of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate said: “I am satisfied that Mr Palmer’s murder bears all the hallmarks of a professional, contract-killing involving organised crime. “Extensive, public appeals have yet to provide information which has been able to assist my team in bringing any charges against the person or people responsible for Mr Palmer’s death.” “It has been widely reported that Mr Palmer had been involved in crime both in the UK and Europe and I continue to examine the links between his lifestyle and the manner in which he was killed.” To date, no charges have been laid against anyone.
THE salad shortage, caused by a drought, floods and hard frost in Spain, has hit British retailers hard, according to new figures from market research company IRI.
It has decimated the Spanish crops of lettuce, spinach, courgettes and other vegetables. Courgette sales in the UK were down by 2.3m euros in January, a fall of nearly 40% on last year, and bagged spinach sales dropped 47%, at a cost of 6.5m euros. It puts the impact of the desperate shortage at 8.8m euros, without even considering the scarcity of lettuce. The UK generally imports about 65% of its fresh fruit and vegetables from the rest of the EU, with Spain the biggest individual source.
But some British supermarkets have begun to ration lettuces, and many shelves stand empty. Such is the shortage that a black market has sprung up, trading veg and salad items for up to four times its normal value. There have been reports of broccoli on sale in the UK for six euros a kilo, and iceberg lettuce going for five euros each. And Cristobal Aguado, President of the Valencian Association of Agriculture, says vegetables such as artichokes and beans could be in danger. Worryingly, Fepex, Spain’s largest growers’ association, says the shortage will last at least until April.

Drug-trafficking gang loses power
10th February - 16th February 2017
Healthy lifestyles can see off deadly cancer CANCER cases, which are increasing in Spain and in most other countries, are spurred on largely because people are living longer.
A TINY municipality in the Catalan province of Girona, Sant Miquel de Fluvià, with a population of just 800, could hardly justify constant electricity cuts through power surges. Yet this seemingly-sleepy hamlet was at the centre of a drugs raid, conducted jointly by Spain’s police and tax authorities. And a probe has revealed that the recurring power cuts were being caused by several homes with intensive marijuana-growing operations. In charge of the scheme, which aimed to distribute the drug in Catalonia and southern France, was a family clan, which had enforced a law of silence among the local residents. Ten individuals were arrested and charged with trafficking their home-grown marijuana, and officers dismantled 10 plantations, featuring a total of 1,642 plants. Six of the growing operations, in Sant Miquel, were controlled by one family, who had bought several detached homes near their own headquarters. Group members had guard dogs, security guards and other measures in place, and, said a joint note released by the National Police and the Tax Agency: “They exerted strong pressure on the residents of the town to ensure they would not testify against them.” Indoor-growing operations require artificial lighting, constant temperatures and ventilation, all of which eats up electricity rapidly. Another typical sign that investigators look for is electricity theft from the general grid, as was the case here. “Refrigeration and lighting equipment consumption was so high that power cuts were habitual in Sant Miquel de Fluvià,” says the press release. The police also confiscated 8,200 euros in cash, a handgun and two revolvers.
The latest figures, released by Miguel Martín, President of the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), show that in 2015, there were nearly 248,000 newlydiagnosed cases, which was a rise of almost 15% from 2012. The figure also overtakes the SEOM’s own forecast for 2020 by about 1,000 cases. The data show that one in every two men and one out of every three women will have cancer at some point in their lives, said Martín. This proportion is already a reality: of the 247,771 cases, according to the best available estimates, diagnosed cases in 2015, close to 149,000 (representing 60%) were men. There are several causes for this: genetic, biological (through different hormones
“More than half of cancers will be cured.” Miguel Martín and organs) and behavioural, said the SEOM President. And men’s higher consumption of alcohol and tobacco increases their risk factors. But Martin, brimming with optimism, and illustrating the progress made in the field of cancer treatment, added:
“More than half of them will be cured.” However, not all types of tumours have benefited equally from the medical advances. Of the 28,000 cases of lung cancer diagnosed each year, around 21,000 result in death.
In contrast, there are around 27,000 new cases of breast cancer annually, and 6,200 fatalities, underlining the greater therapeutic options in the latter case. The most common types of tumours in Spain are bowel cancer (41,000 cases a year), prostate cancer (33,000), lung cancer (28,000), breast cancer (27,000) and bladder cancer (21,000). Globally, the most common cancers are lung, breast, bowel, prostate and stomach. That people are living longer is the biggest factor in rising cancer rates, because mistakes accumulate over time in the genetic code that issues instructions to our cells. But there are other factors that can play a role. Martín stressed that “a third of cases can be prevented” through healthier lifestyles. These include not smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, reducing alcohol consumption, and getting immunisation against certain viruses, such as hepatitis C and human papillomavirus.
No excuses for Benefit fraud!
Sweet taste of seaweed is gourmet’s real treat A SPANISH pastry chef is pioneering a sea change in gastronomy using the green stuff that floats in the ocean. Seaweed is the shock secret ingredient in patisserie maestro Carles Mampel’s groundbreaking new repertoire of gourmet sweets, biscuits and cakes. Algae-stuffed truffles, cookies and muffins will all soon be on offer thanks to his culinary wizardry. The award-winning Barcelona cook began experimenting with these vegetables to create sweet treats that are delectable but healthy. “Some of the varieties are
perfect in taste,” said Mampel. “I mixed one type with milk to create a gel, which I then turned into a delicious caramel cream. “Sea lettuce is perfect for taste, and also for its paperlike texture. I use it as edible packaging and crisp to top my magdalenas.” He also stresses the nutritional value of seaweed, which is rich in iodine, protein and fibre, while being low in fat. But Mampel admits that it will take time to change public opinion. “It’s a cultural question,” he said. “So for this reason it’s easiest to introduce it into wellknown recipes for biscuits and chocolate bars before opening eyes to new creations.”
A BRITON who lived in Mazarrón, south-west Spain, and claimed that being penniless and homeless had left him no choice but to make a fraudulent claim for Benefit, has been given two suspended prison sentences and ordered to repay in full the wrongfully-claimed cash. Michael Dugdale, 69, from Preston, failed to declare that he owned 50% of a property in Mazarrón, Murcia, when making a claim for Pension Credit in 2007. It was an important detail which he again omitted on a review claim form three years later. Thanks to an anonymous tip-off, via the Benefit Fraud Hotline, DWP fraud teams based in the UK and Spain launched an investigation into his claim to uncover the truth. Despite denying any wrongdoing, initially, Dugdale was finally forced to admit the fraud when presented with Spanish property documents, clearly showing that he owned 50% of the property in Spain with his ex-partner. Dugdale said his dire economic situation on his
return to the UK from Spain in 2007 left him no choice but to make a bogus claim for a Benefit to which he knew he was not entitled. He pleaded guilty at Preston Crown Court to two charges of Benefit fraud, totalling over £35,000 and was given two eight-month, suspended jail terms for each charge. He was also ordered to repay the stolen funds in full, or face imprisonment. Income-related benefits, such as Pension Credit or Income Support, cannot be claimed if you live outside the UK. C&A to close stores, and open elsewhere MAJOR clothing chain C&A plans to close down 23 “lossmaking” branches in Spain, which means redundancy for 16% of its staff. The Dutch firm, which has been operating in Europe for 175 years and in Spain for 34, intends to open other stores in Spain, but in other locations. As part of what C&A Iberia’s general manager Domingo Esteves calls a “transformation and simplification plan”, it is closing one branch in each of the regions of Navarra, La Rioja, Asturias, Extremadura, Castilla-La Man-
cha and the Canary Islands, plus another two each in Andalucía, the Basque Country and Catalunya. Galicia and Castilla y León will lose three stores, and five will shut down in Madrid, together with a further five in Portugal. The stores set to close for good are those with leases soon to expire, or which have failed to make a profit in the past few years. Esteves said: “The restructure is aimed at making the company stronger, more sustainable and more competitive to continue to meet customers’ current needs and desires in a more agile manner, within a market which is increasingly more demanding and volatile.”
Once the redundancy procedure starts officially, the Federation of Independent Retail Workers (FETICO) says it will aim to “minimise the impact on affected staff and ensure that those leaving are given the best possible conditions”. A FETICO spokesperson said: “At least the company has not started the process based on the minimum legal requirements, but has held out its hand to us to negotiate what we do not want to have to deal with, but must.” Shop closures will take place progressively, over the course of a year, and offices and warehouses will also need to be restructured, said the union. Among FETICO’s proposals are for staff to be given 40 days’ salary per year worked with the firm, as opposed to 25 initially mentioned by the company, plus bonuses for long service. The union also wants C&A to reduce its workforce via as many voluntary redundancies and early retirements as possible, and to hire a specialist, outplacement company to help affected employees find jobs.

Blue wine not all white!
SPAIN’S muchhyped blue wine has been banned by the authorities, which say it is the “wrong colour” and cannot be advertised as wine.
The blend of red-and-white wine, sold as Gik, comes from grapes produced in the La Rioja, Leon and CastillaLa Mancha regions. But authorities say it is not the right colour, and cannot be advertised as wine. The decision was taken after the company was visited by two inspectors last August before being taken to court, where it was ruled that blue wine does not fit among the 17 approved types. A 750ml bottle of the sweet, grape drink, which has been selling for around eight euros, was dreamed up by a six-strong team of
entrepreneurs, all in their twenties. The product has sold more than 100,000 bottles since its launch last year, said the company in an online petition against the ruling, which read: “In order to continue selling, we have been forced to stop labelling Gik as a wine. Instead, we had to label it in a category named ‘Other alcoholic drinks’. “The main reason? There’s not a category for a blue wine, as there is no historic background for anything similar.” The company added: “This is unfair for all you who trust us, because you have the right to enjoy the original product; and it is absurd, too, as its composition is 100% wine. “We had to change the composition to 99% wine and 1% grape to adapt the product to the current legislation.”

June Brown At 90 - A Walford Legend
Thursday 16 February, BBC 1, 20.30 “Give us a tea, Lofty. And a glass of water so I can take a Paracetamol.” Those were the first words June Brown ever uttered as Dot Cotton. And they would prove to be a turning point in EastEnders’ history. Celebrating a milestone birthday, June Brown At 90 - A Walford Legend, spends half an hour in the company of one of Albert Square’s most beloved actors, as she talks about her life and career. From her early days in theatre to the reason she believes she was cast in the role of Dot (she turned up to the audition on time and she liked a cigarette), June Brown’s views on almost everything are both surprising and entertaining. She reveals that she’d had her horoscope read and was told that on 31 May 1985, “I would have a spectacular success”. The date in question would turn out to be June’s first day on the EastEnders set. She talks of how in the early days she was seen as a rival by a fellow cast member, and how she coaxed more out of her character than just being a hypochondriac (“I loved it when Dot went hysterical”). She also reveals the effect Dot Cotton has had on her life and the opportunities it has given her, from Bafta nominations to revealing all in Calendar Girls. But who is June Brown? And how similar is she to her EastEnders’ character? Funny, eccentric and straight talking, while Dot might be often impersonated, June Brown is unique. Featuring contributions from many Walford regulars (Danny Dyer, Adam Woodyatt, Gillian Taylforth, Rudolph Walker, Lacey Turner and Natalie Cassidy) all of whom pay tribute to their unique colleague.
Dance Dance Dance ITV1, 18.30 Alesha Dixon and Will Best host as the celebrity dance competition reaches the final. The two remaining couples take to the stage to recreate the most famous pop and movie dances of all time including Beyoncé, Lady Gaga and Gene Kelly. Which dancing duo will amaze judges Ashley Banjo, Tina Landon and Timor Steffens and eventually triumph as Dance Dance Dance champions?

The Cruise: Sailing The Mediterranean ITV1, 20.00
CW
ch oice
With unique access to one of the world’s largest luxury cruise ships, this series follows life on board for the crew of 1,400 who live and work on the Royal Princess - from battling leaks to seeking promotions and from tense navigation challenges to trying to wow the crowds in the on-board theatre. Tonight, as the passengers and the ship continue on their journey around the Mediterranean, some members of the crew are coming to the end of their own trips. After 11 years at sea, dance captain Eleanor has decided it’s time to hang up her dancing shoes and return to her native Yorkshire. With her mum Jane on board to support her, she must get through a final emotional performance on the stage that has been her home for more than a decade. Rookie IT officer Victoria is having difficulty adjusting to life on board and with her probation period coming to an end, her appraisal is looming. Has she done enough to impress her boss and hang on to her job? Up on the bridge, officer Lauren has managed to impress the Captain enough for him to hand over the controls of the ship to her for the departure from the Greek Island of Mykonos. It’s the biggest test yet for Lauren as she has to manoeuvre the giant ship safely away from the berth and out of a busy port without getting caught in the shallows. And after a busy summer season Timothy is feeling tired and starting to wonder if he might be a bit long in the tooth to continue with his life at sea. There’s a big decision to be made about his future – will the pull of the sea be too powerful, or will he return to a life on land?

RBS 6 Nations Championship 2017 ITV1, 13.30
Round 1: Italy v Ireland It’s a big day for Italian coach Conor O’Shea - he played thirty-five times for Ireland, now he’ll be plotting to spring a surprise against his fellow countrymen in Rome. After their historic win against New Zealand in Chicago last November, Joe Schmidt’s Ireland are being talked up as serious contenders for the 6 Nations title - but the Italians pulled off an impressive win of their own against South Africa in the autumn and will fancy their chances at the Stadio Olimpico. Mark Pougatch is joined in the studio by former Ireland captain Brian O’Driscoll, Jonny Wilkinson and Lawrence Dallaglio, with pitchside contributions from Martin Bayfield, Maggie Alphonsi and former Italian captain, Marco Bortolami. Commentary comes from Nick Mullins, Gordon D’Arcy and Ben Kay.

Lion Country: Night and Day
10th February - 16th February 2017
S unday
ITV1, 20.00
This brand new ITV documentary series offers a ground-breaking and intimate insight into the lives of two lion families in the Zambian bush. Lions are the world’s most social cats and their family dramas rival anything seen in a TV soap. This series follows two lion prides in extraordinary detail, tracking them night and day for six months in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia; one of Africa’s last great wildernesses. The prides have overlapping territories; which means the action and events in one lion family unavoidably ends up affecting the other. The discovery that ‘Ava’, one of the dwindling Hollywood Pride, has a litter of new-born cubs hidden away is great news. However, the trio of ‘Punk’ Males that lead the neighbouring pride are expanding Hollywood territory, putting the cubs in immense danger. Growing fast, one of the ‘Punk’s own cubs ‘Grace’, passes a major developmental milestone, but it comes with a harsh lesson in lion etiquette. Stuck between the two prides; a lost orphaned elephant needs to reconnect with its family if it’s to survive. And, out of the blue, two big, dominant males return to their former kingdom. Embedded in the heart of lion territory the specialist camera team follows the action; day and night. Their base in South Luangwa National Park in Zambia is one of the world’s last remaining refuges for lions. Over the last 20 years, the world’s lion population has decreased by 40% and the cubs in Zambia represent one of the last hopes for this endangered species.

Call The Midwife BBC1, 20.00
Single, expectant mother Marnie Wallace buckles under the strains of pregnancy and enters into a painful arrangement with her cousin. As Tom provides pastoral care, he reveals why Marnie’s case has touched him more than most. Concerns for Shelagh’s pregnancy threaten to push Dr Turner and Timothy apart, and Poplar celebrates the opening of a new community park with a chariot race.
Ten enthusiastic amateur painters, all bursting with potential, are ready to flex their paintbrushes in this artistic competition. Each week they face two challenges, but they are not alone as they have the help of a mentor to nurture them and guide them to release their inner Da Vincis. Their paintings will be scrutinised by the panel of judges and one of the artists each week will be sent home. This week the artists are taking on Still Life. In the first challenge, facing a table laden with objects, can the artists keep their cool as they paint under pressure for the first time? Mentors Diana Ali and Pascal Anson demonstrate some handy tips for any artist approaching a still life will the artists take their advice or ignore it? In the second challenge, the artists have to take on another Still Life, this time on a much larger scale. Half the artists must tackle a set based on Vincent van Gogh’s painting, Bedroom In Arles, and the other half must interpret Roy Lichtenstein’s Interior With Waterlilies. Wrestling with oil paint, sight-lines and proportions, the artists set out to express their artistic personalities on canvas. At a private viewing the results are seen by members of the public, who can give their favourite artist an automatic pass through to the next round. Then it is up to the judges Lachlan Goudie, Daphne Todd OBE and Dr David Dibosa to deliver their verdicts on our amateurs’ artistic merits and to decide which of them will be sent home. Hosted by Mariella Frostrup and the Rev. Richard Coles, the search begins for the winner of the Big Painting Challenge 2017.

Behind Bars: Prison Undercover. An undercover investigation reveals the reality of life behind bars in Britain’s crisis-hit prison system. Footage recorded by a reporter also working as an officer at a Category C adult prison shows how inmates are effectively running the prison, with many of them off their heads on drugs and drink. It also reveals how prison officers don’t feel able to maintain control and how they are at risk themselves. The programme also finds little evidence of rehabilitation or change, where some weak prisoners suffer, career criminals profit while jailed, drug addicts simply change which drugs they smoke, and the prisoners who could change their ways are being ignored. It comes as the government faces repeated warnings about the crisis inside Britain’s prisons. There have been up to four riots in the last three and a half months, 354 deaths in prison last year and 6,430 assaults on staff in the year to September 2016.

Michael Portillo is blown away by the skyscrapers in Illinois’s Windy City, where he discovers how modern Chicago’s skyline replaced a largely wooden city, destroyed in a great fire shortly before his Appleton’s Guide was published. Training with the city’s firefighters, Michael learns today’s fire department respond to half a million emergency calls a year. Michael steps up to the plate with the Joliet Slammers, stars of the US national game of baseball, then sings for his supper at a quintessentially American restaurant bearing his name! Downtown at the Moody Church, Michael tracks down a pair of evangelists who toured Britain and the United States by rail at the time of his Guide.

Sitcom based on a book by Danny Baker. It’s 1974 and 15-year-old Danny is our guide through the ups and downs of life with the Baker family. Dad Fred, known to all and sundry as ‘Spud’, is a proud south London docker with a penchant for rackets, fiddles and schemes, hopefully ‘nice and tasty’ ones. Wife Bet loves him deeply but longs for the family to go ‘straight’, and do daft things like pay taxes and put money in the electricity meter instead of always trying to scam it. With eldest daughter Sharon’s wedding looming and the docks facing closure and a switch to the dreaded ‘containerisation’, putting thousands of dockers out of work, times are challenging. So too are Danny’s attempts to get closer to the opposite sex. Spud’s money-making schemes end up giving him a nasty shock, whilst a trip to the theatre has an equally surprising outcome for Danny.

Robson travels to the wild and remote coastline of the Outer Hebrides in North-West Scotland, and discovers first-hand how an unpredictable climate and often volatile weather has given these group of islands an identity and way of life all of their own. Robson said: “I’m about to immerse myself in the Hebridean way of life, on a coastline frequently battered and bruised by the wild and unpredictable Atlantic Ocean and its challenging climate.” At the ancient village of Gearrannan, Robson tries his hand at weaving Harris Tweed in a traditional crofter’s blackhouse, with mixed results, and on the Isle of Lewis he goes snorkelling for sugar kelp, used to flavour the local gin. Robson said: “The highlands and islands of Scotland are famous for their whisky, but now gin is enjoying a revival…it takes only a teaspoon of sea kelp to flavour dozens of bottles of gin.”

The Real Marigold Hotel
10th February - 16th February 2017
W ednesda Y
BBC1, 21.00
The hit travel documentary series The Real Marigold Hotel returns for a brand new Indian adventure, this time on BBC One. Starring a delightful new cast of well-known senior citizens - entertainer Lionel Blair, actress Amanda Barrie, snooker champion Dennis Taylor, TV personality Rustie Lee, Doctor Miriam Stoppard, presenter Bill Oddie, singer Sheila Ferguson and actor Paul Nicholas. Embarking on a journey of a lifetime, this new four-part series sees the group travel thousands of miles to make a new home in Kochi, a city in the southwest Indian state Kerala. Inspired by, but otherwise unrelated to the blockbuster film, the series documents the authentic experience of the eight characters living out their golden years, to test whether they can set up a more rewarding retirement than in the UK. As they adjust to life in India and to living together, initially the group members all have different opinions on their new surroundings. Rustie and Miriam seem charmed by their first days here, while Paul, Bill and Dennis rise to the challenge with humour and classic one-liners. However Lionel, the oldest member of the group at 87, finds dealing with the realities of living in India unsettling, with animals in the street and piles of rubbish that can distract from the beauty. Sheila, who is used to living on her own, is keen to make sure she gets what she wants out of the trip. Paul takes her to try out an Ayurvedic massage which she finds profoundly calming and it triggers a positive shift in how Sheila feels about the whole experience. Next, the group travel on traditional houseboats through the world famous backwaters, gliding along the vast waterways that crisscross through the villages and jungles. Leaving all of them charmed by India’s natural beauty and serenity, it marks a turning point for Lionel, who likens the magical setting to “the garden of Eden”. A party to meet the neighbours rounds off their first week, as several members of the group put on a performance for their new friends and everyone takes time to reflect on their time in India so far.

Actor Warwick Davis owes his big break, aged 11, to his paternal grandmother Edith, who heard a radio ad advertising for short people to appear in Return Of The Jedi. Warwick takes a non-judgemental approach as he researches the family line stretching back from Edith, finding humanity and humour in some uncomfortable stories. On his maternal side, Warwick is equally openminded when he finds out about his great, great, great grandfather: a postman who lived a double life.

Mafia Women with Trevor McDonald
10th February - 16th February 2017
T hursday
ITV1, 21.00
In this brand new 2 x 60 minute ITV series, Trevor McDonald meets the mafia wives, girlfriends and daughters who now share their stories with the veteran journalist and broadcaster. Many of these women have never spoken before. Yet, over a six-week journey, Trevor unpicks their stories, uncovering a fresh and penetrating perspective on what it means to live amongst the money, violence, glamour and treachery of the Mob. Trevor spends time with Linda Scarpa, daughter of notorious hit man, Greg Scarpa Snr. Linda mourns both her father and brother, who was “rubbed out” in a hit on a south Brooklyn street, and tells Trevor an incredible story of how, on one life-changing day, she and her infant son were directly caught up in the terrifying crossfire of an all-out mob war. In a tense, emotional encounter, Trevor meets Toni Marie, the first wife of Gambino Captain Mikey ‘Scars’. Toni Marie still feels the pain of the double betrayal she felt at the hands of her husband, who both broke the oath of Omerta to testify against his Mob brothers. And in a gripping encounter, Trevor speaks to a former captain of the Colombo family, Anthony Russo, who, after eventually cooperating with the authorities for the sake of his family is starting over, but his new girlfriend knew nothing of the Mafia and the life Anthony once led.

Russia’s Hooligan Army BBC 2, 21.00
At the 2016 European Championships, violent clashes between Russian and English supporters in Marseille put the spotlight on Russian hooliganism. Russian hooligans injured over 100 English supporters, beating two into a coma. It was some of the worst football violence seen at an international tournament and raised serious concerns ahead of millions of fans travelling to Russia for the 2018 World Cup. To find out what UK football supporters could face, filmmaker Alex Stockley von Statzer travels to Russia to experience the country’s football fan culture first-hand for the BBC’s international current affairs strand This World. Featuring footage filmed in Marseille in 2016, rare interviews with members of some of the most feared firms like the Spartak Gladiators and Orel Butchers, and new footage of an organised fight for wannabe recruits. Russia’s Hooligan Army uncovers a world where brutal violence has become a mark of honour and a symbol of newly resurgent Russian masculinity. Most Russian hooligans have moved away from the English movement that inspired them in the 1970s and 1980s. Today they are organised in firms that are teetotal, physically fit and trained in mixed martial arts. Hooligan firms have become popular in the country and are an inspiration to many young men. With the World Cup on the horizon, the Russian police are trying to get tough. Police have enacted new laws promising bans and jail for any fans that cause trouble and are heavily policing stadiums. Alex travels to Oryol to speak to the Orel Butchers who violently attacked English fans in Marseille. In a rare interview we hear one hooligan taking relish in describing a merciless attack by a number of Russians who kicked an England fan in the head - an attack that was also caught on camera. Alex also travels to Rostov, which will host five games at the World Cup, to film an organised fight in the woods. Here he meets with a local firm getting ready to audition for new members. Young men fight in a no holds barred brawl against young fighters from another local firm. It’s a vicious clash similar to what was witnessed in Marseille and is one of the hundreds of fights that firms arrange all across Russia.

Basket in hand, Michael joins the Schwartz family apple harvest in Centralia and learns how to make apple butter. He uncovers industrial unrest in the coal mines of Carbondale then heads to Kentucky and the banks of the Mississippi, where a bloody conflict unfolded which proved decisive in victory for Lincoln’s Union.

Benny’s Extreme charity challenge BENNY Rivero Hyde, who owns the VA Motors garage in Las Chafiras, will be clocking up plenty of kilometres himself on Sunday when he tackles Gran Canaria’s 18km Guayre Extreme Race on Sunday to raise funds for Tenerife children’s charity Amigos de Gillian Banks. The event is called “Extreme” for good reason because there have been several accidents in the past. But Benny is looking forward to the challenge. The Amigo de Gillian Banks charity organises several events every year to raise money for the island’s underprivileged children and their families. And Sandra Coats (pictured with Benny), who is heavily
involved in the charity, said: “We are extremely grateful to him, and, hopefully, he will gain lots of sponsorship for the race.”
The charity is holding a fund-raising event with entertainers, at the Market Tavern, Paloma Beach, next Sunday (19th Feb).
Live Arico news
We have puppies, again! THESE two girls pictured were rescued a few weeks ago from the roadside. They were absolutely terrified and, clearly, had experienced little human contact. Almost immediately, they became sick with parvo virus and were lucky to survive. They are now six months old and in foster care, learning slowly to trust humans. Can you give either (or both) of them a forever home? For more information, call Sue on 629 388 102. Our Helping Hands A recent, tragic tale was brought to our attention last week. Fire had ravaged through a property, injuring the people who lived there and killing one of their cats. Also in the building were eight dogs and another seven cats, all rescued by their owners
and saving them from a life on the streets. Two of the dogs are in the vets, suffering from smoke inhalation, and the rest are being cared for by Jill Jacobson, from animal charity San Francisco de los Animales. The upper floor of the property is totally destroyed and the
family have lost everything. Covering and support material is needed urgently to repair the property and belongings must obviously be replaced which is why the Helping Hands charity will be assisting with this. Live Arico will be helping with medicines, vet care, new beds and food for the animals. To this end, we are organising a joint charity event at Clouseaus, Palm Mar, on Sunday (12th Feb) from 2pm. Hosted by Derrick Lynes and featuring entertainers Storm Duo, Suzy q, Colin Stevens, Rick Porter, Soni Farrell, Hayley Butler, Jon Paul, Simon Roberts, Uproar and Scott Bateman, it promises to be a good one. Don’t throw things away! Call us on 629 388102, and we’ll sell your unwanted items.
Oasis Fm’s Brightest Breakfast Giveaway competition’s winner Huw Trebble, got the happy news of winning the Sports Camera from Jenny T last Friday courtesy of Kriplus in Las Chafiras.

Claire’s charity marathon effort By Val Sainsbury
CANCER affects one-in-two of us, and we’ve all lost friends and family to this awful disease, or know someone who is currently battling it.
But what can be worse than seeing children suffer, as they bravely endure painful and difficult treatments, in the hope of them being able to lead normal, healthy lives? One person touched by these youngsters’ plights is hairdresser Claire Brown, who works on San Blas, Golf del Sur. She is running in this year’s Virgin Money London Marathon, on 23rd April, to raise funds for the Children with Cancer charity. “It was the first time I had applied to take part in the marathon, and I was accepted,” she said. “I wanted to support a cancer charity because they are the ones close to my heart. Several people around me, including my family, have been touched by the illness. “I only want to take part in one marathon, and it’s got to be this one! It’s iconic, and everyone knows about it. Many brilliant charities are involved, and they all offer fantastic support. “I told the charity that I planned to get ₤2,000 for them, and, as soon as I was accepted, I started fundraising. But, obviously, I would be happy to smash that target.” Thirty-seven-year-old Claire, from Enfield in London, has lived here for 27 years, and the fitness-fanatic has every chance of completing this gruelling event, because she has been taking her training very seriously. “I go to the gym a lot, and do a lot of classes such as Crossfit, which involves lots of disciplines, and Fit 360, a form of circuit training,” she said. “For the last couple of years, I’ve taken part in obstaclecourse racing, held in the north of the island. I compete in a team and I like to try to win, but we want to have fun as well. “I also go altitude training, and completed the Tenerife half-marathon last year. “I eat very healthily, with lots of fruit and veg, and not too much meat! I don’t smoke and I hardly drink. I avoid carbohydrates like the plague, and don’t eat bread, rice or pasta, but I enjoy the occasional pizza when I get cravings!” Although Claire has always
played sport, she didn’t really run. “I started walking, and progressed from there,” she said. “I found it so exhilarating, and it’s almost like flying. It’s such a sensation, and it gets the blood circulating properly.” She is proud Mum to Charlie, 8. “He loves to come running with me,” she said with a smile, “but he soon complains that he’s tired! “People think I’m mad because I’ll run 10k before I go to the salon in the morning. At the moment, my training involves running from Buzanada to Cabo Blanco, and then on to La Camella and Valle San Lorenzo - and back! “It’s just under 9k, and includes really steep hills. I put my heart into everything I do, and don’t want to let anyone down.” For those of you who are interested in health and fitness, you will know that Claire’s low, resting heart rate, which is in the 40s, signifies a very fit individual! A recent coffee-and-cake afternoon, held in the Lima Bar on San Blas, raised over 400 euros. Along with other donations, she is well on her way to reaching her ₤2,000 target. She added: “The charity is involved with the prevention, causes and treatment of childhood cancer. It’s awful, imagining a baby with this disease.” Some of the money raised goes towards taking the families out, and trying to make their lives a little less stressful. For more information about Claire’s charity, and the marvellous work it does, take a look at the website: www. childrenwithcancer.org.uk Her Facebook page, Children With Cancer Fundraising Claire Brown, gives us an insight into her training and fundraising. Ripping night is in store at Showtime EIGHT gruesome murders, 20 jolly songs, and more magic than you can shake a wand at. All this and more, will pour forth from the Swallows Drama Group when members present Whitechapel Music Hall. It is their fourth annual production, and, having already raised nearly 2,000 euros for cancer charities in the past, they are setting their sights even higher this year with a three-night run at Showtime, Karting Las Americas, from ThursdaySaturday (2nd-4th March). The show is based on Jack The Ripper, or, to be more precise, the affect his reign of terror had on the local community. It doesn’t sound like a barrel of laughs. But, blessed with some bizarre characters, great tunes, and surreal twists, this ripping yarn, by Pember and Marne, had West End audiences in stitches when it hit the stage. Twice-weekly rehearsals started in November at the Apolo Centre in Los Cristianos, where the Swallows group meets every Monday. There have been a few setbacks to the production, and just like the police of the day, the drama group lost Jack The Ripper when the original actor had to go to America. An even more dastardly replacement was soon found,
and fast-tracked in the art of murder and mayhem. Mike Huntington, who is again director, outlined his reasons for choosing this show. “It’s a story with many twists and turns that gives all the cast a big involvement,” he said. “Even the poor victims of Jack find their way to return in ghostly form. The costumes are very demanding, with the multi-layered skirts of the time. But we have a dedicated team, working feverishly to make sure it is pleasing on the eyes, as well as to the ears. “We have been lucky to find this free space to rehearse outside, and La Porchetta restaurant next door has made us very welcome.” Mike added: “Showtime Las Americas has been wonderfully-generous to donate its top-notch venue for the show. And three nights will help us raise even more money for the cancer charities. “It really is going to be a fun couple of hours’ entertainment for just 12 euros, and we even have a coach laid on from Trypp Hotel (formerly Princesa Dacil) Los Cristianos, for just three extra euros.” Tickets are on sale now, at the rehearsals on the streetside of the Apolo Centre on Mondays and Fridays, from 1-3.30pm, or call 669 882 964.

Cats Welfare news
Cats can make you healthy WE love cats, you love cats and the internet definitely loves cats. Some people may even describe themselves as cat people. But did you know that owning one is good for you, too? They can lower your risk of heart disease Owning a cat can lower your stress levels. Research has found that this has a knockon effect on your risk of cardiovascular disease, and a decreased risk of death from heart diseases including strokes. They can help children with autism Researchers have found that the social interaction of children with autism dramatically improved when around pets, particularly cats. Last year, we were proud to send a kitten to Germany, found on the streets of Tenerife, who is now a therapy cat for children with autism, with amazing results. Their purring helps to heal bones, tendons and muscles Cats purring doesn’t just show they’re happy. The sound has also been long associated with a therapeutic healing ability on human bones and muscle. It’s to do with the frequency of purr vibrations at 20-140 HZ. Frequencies in the 18-35 HZ range have a positive effect on joint mobility after injury, and scientists have begun talking about how this cat noise could help humans.
They can help with your love life If you’re a man, it would seem, anyway! Research has found that women are more likely to be attracted to men with pets, and men with cats are nicer and more caring. Children will have fewer infections and respiratory problems Studies of both dogs and cats revealed that contact with these pets in the first year of life can toughen up babies’ immune systems, particularly against respiratory diseases. It’s thought that children who are exposed to cat allergens are healthier and happier. Cleaner is not always better. They have a positive impact on your mental health If you still need further reasons to cuddle your cat, a Cats-Protection survey of 600 people, 50% of whom had mental-health problems, 87% of cat owners felt that their pets had a positive impact on their well-being, and 76% found that coping with everyday stresses was easier. Even watching cat videos is good for you There’s a reason why cat videos are so popular. That fuzzy feeling you get from watching cute kitties isn’t in your head. Bombay Babu tandoori restaurant, Costa Adeje
Taste the past - it’s as good as before! IT’S nice to go back to a restaurant you haven’t visited for a while, just to see if the food really is as good as you can remember. A few years ago I discovered a fabulous restaurant, which was buzzing with excitable energy and, comfortably, full with satisfied customers. It was Bombay Babu Tandoori restaurant, in Costa Adeje, and this establishment, the company’s original one, has updated the décor since my last visit. But it still allows the simplistic beauty of the food to shine. As with any Indian meal, we started the evening off with some Papadum, accompanied by a pickle tray and followed by our starters, the Bombay Babu especial!
This dish, made for sharing, comprises onion bhaji, chicken barra kebab, chicken tikka, pudina tikka, vegetable pakora, sheikh kebab and chicken pakora. When it arrived, we noticed that the dish was presented with passion and quality, along with a modern feel - like all the food throughout the evening. Although we could not fault any of the starters (confirmed by the clean plate which went back), there were a few items that stood out. The first was the remarkable pudina tikka, a mouth-watering starter with a delectable mint flavour, stemming from the succulent mint paste coating the paneer tikkas. The second, the vegetable pakora, is, essentially, a deliciouslyspiced combination of assorted vegetables, deep-fried in chickpea
batter to golden perfection. For the main course, I went with the Rogan Josh Bombay Babu special: a mixture of chicken, lamb tikka and prawns. My partner ordered chicken pathia, which consisted of the bitter-sweet flavour with mango and coconut. The Pathia dish, a popular curry, is served on special, social functions such as births or marriages, among the Parsi
population in India. This is a sweet, sour and spicy curry - the result of normal Gujarati curry spices, added with mango and coconut. The spicy heat comes from fresh, green, hot chilli peppers and dried red chilli peppers. There is no ginger, and the chicken we had is the common meat used. The dish was executed perfectly, like all our dishes, and the bright colours of the ingredients, peeking through the curry

sauce, was a feast for the eyes … as well as the stomach! The mango flavour balanced the spiciness of the tender chicken well, although this dish was a bit too spicy for my liking, unlike the Rogan Josh. But I know a lot of people who would willingly pay top dollar for a dish like that. The servings were plentiful, reasonablypriced and both extremely tasty. To accompany the main dishes, we had some old favourites: Pilau rice (an Indian basmati rice with three colours, flavoured with onions, cinnamon, cloves and herbs), some cheese nann and something we had never tried before: tandoori roti. That’s a thin, Indian bread cooked in the tandoor, and it’s already a new favourite which we’ll certainly have again. We also had two other diners joining us - our boys! One will try anything, but the other is extremely fussy? I am pleased to say that we had a peaceful dinner, with everyone enjoying the food served and sending back clean plates. The eldest tried everything on our starters’ plate. He particularly enjoyed the chicken barra kabab, and was mesmerised by the “green chicken”, as he called it (what is it with green food and kids?), but he enjoyed that as well. The youngest abstained
from a starter and just ate his way through the Papadums. For their main course, there was no budging the youngest. He went for something from the reasonably- extensive kids’ menu: freshlybreaded chicken with chips. He did, however, try some of the other food on the table, and enjoyed the various types of bread we had ordered. The eldest had the chicken tikka. We ordered the starter’s portion, which was ample, along with the Pilau rice and bread. He, too, enjoyed his meal, and everyone sat there fully satisfied. The Bombay Babu delivers exactly what it aims to achieve, and we will certainly make this one of our regular, dining-out establishments. The restaurant is located along one of the main walkways down to the sea-front. And, whatever direction you approach this area, you cannot fail to see Bombay Babu because of its modern signage. Child car seats
(part 3)
By Emma at Motorworld
What happens if a childrestraint system is not used? Firstly, regardless of the distance which is to be travelled, using a normal 3-point restraint system for a minor isn’t any good. If the minor’s feet don’t touch the ground/ floor or the vehicle, then the belt is of no use as the child could slide out and be severely injured in an accident. The failure to comply with the ruling on child safety is considered a major offence, and a fine of 200 euros can be implemented along with the loss of 3 points for the driver. Police also have the ability to impound the vehicle in which the minor was travelling. How is the childrestraint system fitted? Child-restraint systems are either fitted using the vehicles 3-point seat belt, or via the ISOFIX fitting system, if the car
has the capabilities. The ISOFIX fitting is made up of three fixing points. Two of the fixing points are situated between the back of the seat and the base, and the base of the child-restraint system is clipped onto these. The third fixing point is designed to stop the seat from rotating in an impact. There are two types: * Top Tether: This fixes the child restraint system to either the back of the main car seat, or to fixing points in the boot. * Fixing foot/Load leg: This fixes the childrestraint system to the floor of the car via a foot/leg. How do you know a child restraint system is homologated? All child restraint systems must be homologated (officially sanctioned), and comply with the European law ECE R44/04 + i-Size. Child-restraint systems homologated with the ECE R44/04 ruling must show a sticker that shows the manufactur-
er’s name, the law and the homologation number. Child-restraint systems homologated with the i-Size must show a sticker with a picture of a restraint system and the i logo. Do you need to replace your child restraint system after an impact? Most child-restraint systems need to be replaced if they were in a vehicle that experienced an impact/crash, even if the child wasn´t in the vehicle at the time. This is because crash forces can be extreme. The recommendations are to replace the restraint system if the accident/incident is not classified as minor, even if the restraint shows no visible damage. Minor crashes must meet ALL the following criteria * The vehicle was able to be driven away from the crash site * The vehicle door nearest the safety seat was undamaged * There were no injuries to any of the vehicle occupants
* The air bags (if present) did not deploy * There is no visible damage to the safety seat Do child-restraint systems expire? Most manufactures have a service-life interval for their childrestraint systems, so it would be down to each manufacturer. However, the normal expiry would be between 6-9 years. Each restraint system should come with a manufacture date printed on the label. The reason for the expiry is that the restraint systems are made from plastic, which, as it ages, becomes brittle and weak; these are two qualities you don´t want in a restraint system that may have to withstand severe crash forces. What are side air bags (SABs), and can childrestraint systems be used in cars with them? There are three main types of SABs: Head SABs; these are usually mounted in the roof rail above the side windows, and
are designed to help protect the head in a side impact/crash. There are two types of head SABs - curtain SABs and tubular SABs. The curtain SABs act like a curtain and cover the windows, which can also protect the passengers from flying glass. Chest SABs; these are mounted to either the side of the back seat or in the door, and are designed to help protect the chest in a serious side impact/crash. Combo SABs; these are usually only mounted to the side of the front
seats. They are larger than the chest SABs, but are still designed to help protect the chest and head of an adult. SABs are safe for both adults and children. However, each restraintsystem manufacturer has a different point of view on whether the restraint systems can be fitted next to them. Most manufacturers ask you to refer to the cars owner’s manual for installation instructions. However, most new-style seats are designed to work in conjunction with the SABs.

Why couples used to love that ‘first sleep’
By Carl from Robot
By Val Sainsbury
WE often get asked in the salon for changes of colours, and keeping our clients happy with their hair is our goal. But, sometimes, when we are shown an image of a desired cut or colour, it’s totally obvious to us that Photoshop has been used. A regular hair colour can be enhanced in such a way as to give the illusion that it has been coloured, but, in reality, it’s never seen that shade. This makes it so hard for us to explain to the client that this colour may not be achievable, without us sounding like we are trying to advise you not to go for that particular colour. We have to get over to the client that this
IT may bring some comfort to those who go to bed, only to wake up in the middle of the night, frustrated and unable to get back to sleep.
colour may not be actually real. We welcome your ideas and inspiration, but what is seen on a screen nowadays may not always be true. This applies to claims of rapid colour changes that are not physically possible. For example, black to blonde in a few hours just can’t be achieved without hair damage. When we do our consultations before any colour treatment, the hair is analysed to determine if the
colour is achievable. The colour technique is explained to the client, including upkeep and the effect on the hair, now and in the future. Your hair is a living thing, and not a wall that you can just paint over. We don’t have an eraser to “rub out” years of colour, to achieve the shade you may ask for. So the next time you look at a colour, look again. Is it what you see, or has it all been created on a computer, and not actually in a salon?
Don’t give it the cold shoulder By Carl Pattison
It won’t go away … shoulder obsession, that is. It started last Spring, and is continuing into this year.
The major fashion houses have picked up on it again this Spring, and it seems that there’s a version of it to suit most body shapes. You don’t need to have the most perfect body to rock this look; how much you reveal, or don’t, is entirely up to you. Add in the “frilled” version of this, or go for
a striped, “sportier” one. Choose a smarter, “white-shirt” look, or bring out the bling for an evening alternative. This shoulderrevealing fashion looks great as a top, but works just as well as a full dress. If you’re not brave enough to take off both shoulders, then go for an asymmetric version that only reveals one side. Don’t reveal too much, because it’s supposed to look sensual, not sexy. Check out the stores, and hunt down your personal take on this fashion which just won’t go away.
But while this is regarded as insomnia today, people did it on purpose until the end of the 19th century. Well after the Industrial Revolution, many people in Britain still swore by the health benefits of a “first sleep” and “second sleep”. Insomnia is often seen as a problem these days. But, until the late 1800s, it was not unusual to wake up in the night. For centuries, according to a sleep historian, they would use that time to do household chores, visit friends, or even make love to their spouse. Sleeping through the night is, by comparison, a “modern invention”, according to Professor Roger Ekirch, of Virginia Polytechnic and State University. When addressing the Royal Society of Medicine in London recently, he said: “Middle - of-the -night insomnia was a rare problem, and, as early as in the 16th century, it was utterly normal, unworthy of comment.” Bedtime was, historically, around 10pm, after which, he added: “Most individuals awakened shortly past midnight to an hour or so of consciousness, in which they meditated, they conversed and made love … not necessarily in that order. “A 16th century physician said making love was better after the first sleep, when people had more enjoyment and do it better.” People even used the gap between their first and second sleep to wash clothes, have a conversation, or steal the neighbour’s firewood, historical records show. It was thought that
love-making between the two sleep phases was responsible for large families, with labourers able to conceive several children because they waited until after their energy-giving first sleep. It was also thought to aid digestion, if people turned from lying on their right to their left when they awoke during the night. References to two phases of sleep go back to Chaucer, with a character in The Squire’s Tale, in the Canterbury Tales, deciding to go back to bed after her “first sleep”. The concept of sleeping through is a relatively modern invention, and thanks to people working longer hours in the Industrial Revolution. Unless kept awake by a cold house, bed bugs or worry, most people were unconcerned about getting up in the night. It was not seen as insomnia, while “sleeplessness” referred only to failing to fall asleep in the first place. But the practice of having a first and second sleep fell out of favour in the decades following the Industrial Revolution, when, increasingly, people worked long hours as machine-manufacturing dominated British industry.
The sleep historian said the shift came at the end of the 19th century, as the end of the first sleep crept later to around 3am, before it was jettisoned altogether. Suddenly, sleeping in two phases was seen as inefficient, and people were warned that indulging would lead to headaches and constipation. It was even feared, heaven forbid, that in young men and women, it might cause “lustful thoughts”. Prof Ekirch added: “Sleep represented a necessary evil, best confined to a single interval, thus allowing someone to steal a march on the day and on one’s fellow human beings, who were still enjoying their second sleep.” Today, as a result, said the history professor: “Many people who wake at night think they are abnormal.” Yet research suggests this may be a normal sleeping pattern when people are away from artificial lights, and especially the blue light displayed by electronic devices. Prof Erich said: “Rather than the product of an implacable disorder, their sleep, viewed from the high ground of history, may just be natural.”

It’s Almond Blossom time By Colin Kirby BRISTLING and buzzing, the heavily-laden, almondblossom trees held equal attraction for the bees, regardless of their white or pink petals. Yes, almond-blossom season is here again, and Santiago del Teide is ablaze with hundreds of trees in full bloom, beside the stark, volcanic landscape, formed by the last big Tenerife eruption in 1909 from Chinyero. Nature can destroy, but it also creates, and, in recent years, summer-fire outbreaks have added their own scorched scars to the large fir trees which share the walk from Santiago del Teide town to Arguayo. Along the route, new life is sprouting constantly. And if that’s a bit of a miracle, it’s not the only one in this area. I joined one of several groups for an early-morning start to my annual treat, as the launch day of Almendro En Flor set off from the church plaza. The walk is backed by food and cultural promotions until February 19th, and the blossom will be at its best until then at least. The sun was spreading down the peaks at 8.30am as backpack walkers gathered in the plaza outside Santiago del Teide Town Hall.
There are four routes to explore, and I had already chosen my usual route, the longest, as we set out in a group of 20 with our guide, Juan Antonio, Those who follow in future weeks will be pleased to know that routes are marked on boards in the plaza. And the nearby tourist information office can offer advice in several languages. The paths are well-trodden, well-trimmed and sign-posted at decision points. Yet all this help can barely prepare walkers for the sheer beauty, as they swap access road for rough track from just behind the plaza. It was a crisp, clear morning, and the clear-blue sky made the blossom stand out even more, the slightly-moist plants and leaves adding to the fresh feel. As the path climbed, we could see the rising road to
Masca behind us, and hear the melodic chimes of the hour from the church clock. A reservoir was one of the first breather stops, and its wellstocked state was a reminder that rain and all other weather variants are always possible. So it’s wise to pack a few alternative layers of clothing, along with water, snacks, mobile, etc. Nature was tempting my camera at every turn, and some cascades of blossom were just calling out to be snapped. And, besides the full, open blooms, there were plenty of young buds lining up for the next starring role. As well the staff picking the almonds for the thriving food market, they perform regular maintenance work on the trees and shrubs. And a friendly wave from a busy worker was a reassuring sight. A large clearing, around 90 minutes in, offered a history
lesson. The Calvario de los Baldios marks the point where the 1909 lava flow stopped, when the statue of the virgin was placed in its path. A couple of shrines commemorate this “miracle”, providing a little food for thought before we entered the solidified lava field. The undulating route through the large boulders, carved and fragmented by the elements, is quite rough and angular underfoot, and sturdy footwear is your best friend here. Pine forests in the distance grow out of the volcanic soil, and, beyond them, a snowstreaked Mount Teide adds its own noble touch. Dropping down into the protected Special Nature Reserve, the pine trees close in and the floor is covered in green needles, cones and dry brush, all helping to test the most nimble of feet. The Arguayo route almost circles back to its start near the end, and, looking across, I could see Santiago del Teide like a model. Beyond that, the low cloud at sea made it seem as though the island of La Gomera was floating in the air. Nature provides some stunning resting places to enjoy a water-and-snack break, and it’s never long before more almond blossom
screams out for pride of place in your photo collection. The descent into Arguayo is a slow, zig-zag path, with shifting small stones … not a place to drop your guard. But reaching the village just over five hours from the start filled me with a huge sense of satisfaction. A taxi to close the circle back to Santiago del Teide is the best and cheapest option, speeding you towards some excellent examples of the almond’s versatility. During the promotion of the walk, bars and restaurants in Santiago del Teide are offering tapas and main meals, featuring the almond. The free tourist-information leaflet lists each venue with its special menu, and even the supermarkets are selling almond sweets and sauces. The leaflets are in several languages and widely available around the town. The free Chinyero visitors’ centre, at the lower end of Santiago del Teide, is also taking part in the promotion, featuring special exhibitions until 19th February, as well as its permanent guide to the area’s history of the area: the 1909 eruption, and a wider look at how volcanoes work. Opening times are from 9am2.30 pm, and, if you can make time, the Almond Walk is a must!

Make those dreams come true
WHEN you’re a pretty young girl of 15, with the world at your feet, the last thing you want to be told is that you will be in a wheelchair by the time you’re 40. But this was the awful news from her doctor that spurred on The Sound of Musicals’ Tracey Cutting to become the talented performer she is today. “I was born with a collapsed spine and scoliosis, and some discs were missing,” she said. “I was told I would never be able to dance. “So my advice to anyone who has problems at a young age, and has dreams of becoming a dancer, is to do it, and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t. “I would love to inspire just one other person who has a serious back problem, and tell them to always follow their heart.” Tracey has suffered with backache every day since she was 15, apart from when she was expecting her children, Ty and Samara, now nine and six years old respectively. The 43-year-old, born in the Kent town of Deal, performs in the show with husband, Dominic James. “I left school just before my 16th birthday, and went to catering college for two years,” she said. “I loved it, and applied to join the RAF when I left. “Whatever happened, I knew I wanted to travel, and I thought that joining up was a great way to do that. “I signed on the dotted line, and asked how I would be able to get my asthma medication when travelling … and that was it! They wouldn’t accept me. At the time I was devastated, because that was what I really wanted to do.” She added: “So I applied for a job as a nanny in Switzerland. I was about 18, and I was just about to accept the position when my older sister, Mandy, rang me from Italy. “She had a dance group there called Hot Ice, and asked me if I’d like to replace one of the girls, who had dropped out. I
thought about it for a few days, then decided to join her. “I stayed in Italy for 2½ years, and then we both came to Tenerife on a two-week, package holiday. We agreed that if we got work here we would stay. ”Within a week our schedule was choc-a-bloc, so Mandy and I brought Hot Ice over here from Italy. There was nothing like it on the island at the time, 24 years ago. “We were very modern, and included funky, comedy and rock in our dance routines, and all to music from the likes of Dire Straits and Pink Floyd. “We were a duo for four years, then went back to being a trio, working in hotels doing two or three shows a night.” The girls kept it going for 18 years, during which time they performed in Venezuela and Japan. They also supported acts over here such as Bernard Manning and Cannon and Ball. “I’m very proud,” said Tracey. “Hot Ice were a good, well-known group, and we were respected because we worked hard. Five of us got back together and opened at last year’s TEAs. It was great.” She also created a show with Gavin Nicholas and The Sound of Musical’s Lone Guest, and called it Starmix, which lasted for about a year. “I’ve never had any singing training,” she said, “but I started dancing when I was eight, and went every weekend to Deal Dance Centre to learn tap, modern and ballet.” Mum Rowena and Dad Terry, both 67, have a music shop in Deal. Tracey added: “Dad teaches the drums, and still plays them in a band. “Mum’s a dressmaker, and made our costumes when we were kids. When we had Hot Ice, we’d ring her and say we needed three new Can-Can dresses, and she’d make them up and bring them over! “My twin brother, Mark,
Interview by Val Sainsbury
TracEy Cutting has played the drums all his life, and my Grandad was a presenter, drummer and ballroom dancer. “Mandy and I teach at Estrellas Theatre School, and it’s like a mini version of Fame, with all the dancing and singing. And there’s lots of talent there. This year, the pupils will be performing Charlie and the Chocolate Factory at Showtime.” Tracey will also be taking part in the Swallows’ production, 1888 Whitechapel Music Hall, on Thursday-Saturday (2nd-4th March). “The Swallows are a great mix of people, who, though not professionals, give up their time” she said. “I absolutely love it. “It’s the first time they’ll be performing on a proper stage, because Showtime have offered their venue, and all proceeds will go to various Tenerife cancer charities. “It’s proper Cockney and based in the East End of London - and very tongue-in-cheek. I feel privileged to be working with them because they’re prepared to get up on stage and sing, dance and act.” As for The Sound of Musicals, Tracey said: “We’re a great team. Everyone looks out for each other, and we’ve all got each
others’ backs. “Ty showed no interest in what Dominic and I were doing until he was six, when he wanted to come to one of my dance classes. Then he was hooked! “We were in an MTV music video last year as a family, and he took it all in his stride.” But Tracey reflects: “If I hadn’t done what I’m doing n o w, I ’ d
love to have been involved with acting. And I’m very creative and interested in costume design. “I put the costumes together for The Sound of Musicals, and Mandy and I create the ones for Estrellas. “But my dream is to be a stand-up comedienne. Even though I was painfully shy as a child, I enjoy doing impressions and playing character parts. And I love making people laugh!”

Hammers A just can’t rewind WITH Gaffers A already crowned Division One champions in the Direct Telecom Pool League, the race for second spot is really warming up. But for one team in the race, Tenerife Hammers A, it really was a week to forget! They had two games this week as they played catch-up. First was an away game against Dreamers A in Los Cristianos, which didn’t exactly go to plan. Dreamers A were in fine form and opened up a quick lead. The damage was done early and Hammers A simply couldn’t recover. They needed to regroup and prepare for their home match with Rewind A later in the evening. Hammers A are normally strong at home, but they came up against a team who have hit form in recent weeks. The home side were rattled from their earlier defeat, and it showed, Rewind A picked up early frames, grew in confidence, and, once in front, never looked back to earn a superb away win. But for sorry Hammers A, the two defeats may have cost them the runners-up accolade. Palms A remain in pole position for that spot, despite a defeat at champions-elect Gaffers A. Yet the night started well for them as they raced into a 3-0 lead, starting with a shock JT win over Neil. But Top Six Dave stopped the slide for Gaffers, who then took the next couple of frames to level at 3-3. Palms re-asserted themselves in the next frame, but that was as good as it got for them. Gaffers rode their luck a few times, and a couple of crucial misses from Palms gave the match a lopsided scoreline. As Top Six Dave said: “The score line didn’t reflect the contest.” Palms have some winna-
ble games to come, and they are still confident of landing their first trophy in four years. Phoenix Potters, still in the race as well, welcomed Gaffers B to Los Abrigos. Despite their age, the Potters have been sharp this season, and, at the halfway point, they led 4-2. They then won two of the next three frames to ensure a draw. But they didn’t stop there, polishing off the final three frames for a comfortable win to sit one point off second. Dreamers A, who have given themselves a slim chance after beating Hammers A, also had a second game, against visitors Terrace Roosters. They started well, though, taking a 3-1 lead, but Dreamers reversed this in the second session to leave the match all-square. Roosters struck first as Fin beat Tommy for the second time, only for the home side to win the next two. It was all to play for now, but Mark D, facing Greer, just couldn’t get into the game. Greer took control and rolled in the black to give Roosters a much-needed point. The mid-table teams are also still jostling for position, and Treehouse A provided the best result of the night against basement boys Bluebell A. They nearly had the perfect game, but Jay, a little jaded after becoming a new father, dropped a frame, which spared Bluebell A a whitewash. Rewind Rewired also grabbed three points after a solid home performance against Exiles A, who never travel well. Terrace Bantams were also in action against Palms Elite as both teams looked to get ahead of each other. It was a close affair over the opening games, and, at 4 -4, it looked to be heading for a draw.

However, Bantams reverted to their usual trick of beating themselves. And with some loose shots, they allowed Palms Elite to grab the points. The Division Two title is still up for grabs, and the run-in is getting tighter by the week. James Hammers C, currently top of the pile, were away this week against Exiles B. It turned out to be a routine game for them, and, despite some de-

cent pool from the hosts, Hammers C were always in control, wrapping up the points quickly. Picasso’s A have looked favourites all season for the title, and it was only two weeks ago that they were knocked off top spot. Since then, though, they have gone backwards. This week they played fellow title-hopefuls Bluebell B, but it was another bad night for Fran and her

boys. Bluebell B have been on a decent run, and it showed as they looked the more confident, taking early frames. Picasso’s fought hard and the frames were close. But the home team kept their cool, and, with the blacks dropping in, they crossed the finish line first. They have two games in hand over current leaders James Hammers A, and are within five points. This battle is going to the wire! Picasso’s, who then played again with a match at Palms Rebels, endured another disappointing night as they succumbed, which meant they’d had a really bad week! Yates Bar, currently in second place, travelled to Chayofa to play Treehouse B. The Las Americas side put early frames under their belts and were in full control. And though the home side grabbed a couple of wins, it wasn’t enough and Yates Bar picked up three more points. Their season, and Bluebell B’s for that matter, now hinges on the next two weeks as they play back-to-back fixtures - against each other! and picked up a few early frames. Unfortunately, they wobbled in the second session and allowed Splash Bar to open up a lead they never relinquished. Challenging time SUNDAY saw the culmination of our annual challenge match with Scotland. And this year saw the 10th edition of an event that goes from strength to strength. The competition is fierce and no quarter is given. But it’s not what the weekend is about. Friendships are made and renewed, and the general consensus was: “It’s been the best clash so far.” Scotland again took the trophy, but the Direct Telecom pool league pushed them all the way. Sunday’s finale at the Terrace Bar was well supported. and the league would like to thank Andy and the gang for their wonderful hospitality. Neil Breakwell was named Tenerife player of the tournament, while John Brownlies took the honours for Scotland. Man of the weekend was undoubtedly Muir ‘The Surgeon’ Bryson, who decided to get into the spirit of the event with a fetching Christmas outfit!

Go-Go Gio… almost! HAVING been a regular player in the darts league for a few years, Gio, of Division 2’s Pas O Nadas B, is well known for her ability. And she added to her four maximums this season with a stunning 151 check-out during her team’s 4-4 draw with Rood. Sadly for her, it was one point shy of the record 152, held by Wolfy, of Marilyns A. Maybe next time! The Tavern continued their title quest with a 6-2 win at Clouseaus, while Palms Pool Bar went one better, putting seven past Waterfall. Bar 180 edged a close match at Sundowners, and Marilyns A won the last rubber to beat Nauta Nomads. Elsewhere, there were draws for Legends, entertaining Picassos, Naughty Nautas, who held the trebles to tie with Bar Leones, and Marilyns B, who fell at the last hurdle to end all-square at
Ourplace Playgirls. A minor shockwave spread through Division 1 as reigning league champions Phoenix Bar, were outgunned by leaders Scruffy Macs. Kev and his lads were in fine form on the night. They beat an off-colour Phoenix, who had Mitch to thank for halting a whitewash! I dare say Pas O Nadas A didn’t enjoy that result, but they did their part by clocking up five points from a hard-fought match with Boothen, who had Sam firing in a 13-dart leg. Pete hit his second 180 during The Pub’s 6-2 success at PSB, and Daniel slotted home a 112 finish for Gaffers as they beat the Playboys 7-1. Team of the week award goes to Sandys Reborn, who enjoyed a cracking performance at Exiles to earn their second victory of the season! It’s down to the nittygritty in the Canarian Weekly team handicap

(Saturday’s) derby game with Gran Canaria at 5.30pm in La Laguna. All their big guns were firing, with six players chalking up double figures. They were headed by Tim Abromaitis with 16, Davin White (14), Martin Grigonis (12), Georgios Bogris (11) and 10 points each for
Rodrigo San Miguel and Fran Vazquez. The 36-34 lead at the halfway stage provided a solid foundation for two crushing final quarters, 26-17, and 27-14. The only black cloud was losing San Miguel late on with an injury to his right leg. But he hopes to be fit for the derby showdown.
European wheelchair basketball over here
GROUPS have been drawn for the European Wheelchair Basketball Championships, taking place in Tenerife from 19th June to 1st July. The opening rounds will keep Great Britain
and Spain apart as the action gets underway in Arona and Adeje. The draw for the initial stages, made in Los Cristianos this week, sees Great Britain take on Turkey, Germany, Israel, Sweden, and Lithuania.
Spain will compete against Italy, Poland, Switzerland, France, and Holland. Hosting the championships is a major coup for Tenerife because the event will get considerable coverage throughout Europe.

Wind beneath our wings
By Colin Kirby
PEOPLE perched on their rooftops, overlooking the far end of the Heliodoro stadium, is always a sign that Tenerife are on a hot streak. It was certainly nosebleed time on Saturday night as the team elevated themselves to fourth in the league. Even the pigeons will have to fight for their perches at future home games. The week’s buildup to the game was dominated by the three new transfer-window signings. But Senegalborn Amath showed what they have to live up to with a two-goal master-class. The 20-year-old loan striker, from Atletico Madrid, keeps on improving and is fastbecoming Tenerife’s wind beneath their wings. True, his early-season games, when he was tied to a restrictive wide role, were not so convincing. Now, though, he roams the final third of the pitch, using his speed and deft touch to dazzle

the opposition. Tenerife´s back four pushed higher up the field to put pressure on Elche - not an easy tactic to carry off. But when your defence is as confident and solid as the Tenerife back line, it works well. But Elche had little to offer, and former Santa Cruz hero Nino had a quiet game, apart from a long drive at Dani Hernandez on the halfhour.
It barely tickled the keeper, who is also at the peak of his game. The firm defence limit his practise time these days, fully aware that if a rare chance arises, Dani will mop it up easily. Aaron is another key player. His build-up and link play is mostly under-rated, but he provides the team’s pulse, getting around the Elche defence with ease. The opening goal
showed why Choco Lozano was picked ahead of Cristo Gonzalez. Yes, he is finding goals hard to come by, yet he contributes plenty. With two defenders seemingly having a high ball covered, Choco forced his way between them to nod the ball on to Amath. He locked on and danced the ball past the keeper with 10 minutes of the first half
to go. And Tenerife’s dominance carried over into the second half. Suso won the ball on the right and sent a searching pass in for Choco, who wasn’t quite quick enough to turn it into a shot. Nino found a nugget of form from his past days when he turned sharply and fired a fierce shot at Hernandez, who tipped it over the bar like swatting a fly. The second goal was
another lesson in finishing. Amamth won the ball and pulled his markers wide before stroking it into the net casually. The 14,376 crowd, reflecting their appreciation, were in full roar and baying for more goals. And a double substitution brought Tyronne and Omar into the action for Suso and Choco. But the home pace dropped a little, even after an Elche dismissal. A shocking tackle by Pelegrin hacked down Amath and the red card was richly deserved. But Tenerife have a problem with punishing short-handed teams and it proved the case again. It didn’t matter so much with a two-goal lead, but it’s something that needs ironing out. Rachid was given a 10-minute debut, replacing the sublime Alberto, and there was time for a couple of super saves from Dani. Tenerife face a stern test at Valladolid on Sunday. But with Japanese signing Gaku Shibasaki still to add to the mix, hopes will be high.
Marino rattle leaders By Colin Kirby
LAS Palmas, the high-scoring, runaway leaders, have crushed most opponents this season, but Marino made them work hard for this away victory. The two teams provided a real thriller, packed with chances, some dubious refereeing calls, and good football. Marino went with their high-ball game, which required a forward with impressive control skills, and they had just the man in Adan. Chesting, hooking, and heading, he kept creating chances out of nothing. Marko Cicovic launched an early flier down the pitch and Adan brought it down to set up Kevin Castro, who was stopped with

a foul. But Las Palmas were confident, fast and fluid in attack, their defence looked frail, particularly the fullbacks. After firing a warning shot across the home
goal, Exposito went for a direct route and went down in the box when challenged by Marko. Captain Boor stepped up and converted the penalty for a 10thminute lead.
Marino tried to exploit the defensive uncertainty of Las Palmas, and Brad Mills swung in a long ball, to which Adan connected when out-jumping two defenders. But the ball just failed to reach Amed. Then, defender Sito made a terrible error to gift the ball to Adan, whose shot let him down. But Carlos Gonzalez increased the lead with a determined second attempt after Marko had blocked his initial effort. Marino’s two-goal deficit didn’t reflect the balance of the game. Las Palmas are used to punishing rivals who are behind, but Marino were up for the challenge and came back strongly. Adan was a constant thorn in the Las Palmas side. His shot on the turn was high and wide,
and, just before the break, the keeper had to block the striker twice in quick succession. Amed had a good first half for Marino and was even better in the second half. He had Sito in his pocket all game, and the full-back must have dreaded the sight of him. The forward’s reward came from a freekick. He flighted the ball perfectly to leave the keeper stranded, reducing the arrears after 62 minutes. But Las Palmas were always a threat going forward, Carlos scooping a shot over the bar, and Marko came to the rescue with his alert goal-keeping. His high take from a corner, and a low save at the post, kept Marino in the hunt. However, Marino were getting frustrated with
ref Marta’s calls, backup keeper Petar being booked for the second time in a few weeks when sat on the bench. Pablo came close to adding a third goal, but Marino kept chasing the game and used attacking subs to try to force an equaliser. Las Palmas always seemed to have that little bit of extra class in reserve, yet there were plenty of pluses for Marino to draw on. They remain fifth, just outside the playoff zone, and need to reduce the widening gap. New midfield signing Bamba, from Deportivo’s B team, didn’t get the call from the sub bench. But he will have a chance to force his way into the side at Arucas this weekend.

Money in the Bank or Money in a Bond, make an informed choice
The majority of us keep money in a bank account, why? Because it is easy, relatively secure, and easily accessible. There is also a deposit protection scheme in place which covers the amount in your bank account up to €100,000 or £75,000. So far, so good? The deposit protection amount has been reduced from £85,000 which was the previous compensation limit. This means that if a bank or building society cannot meet its obligations and subsequently fails, or becomes insolvent, the maximum compensation you will receive will be £75,000 or £150,000 for a joint account (husband and wife). What about growth on your savings? Returns are not good, interest rates are hardly inflation beating and your hard earned cash is not really being put to work for you. In fact, the average savings account is paying less than 1% per year and some have reduced to 0.2 or 0.1% So how does this look in reality? Consider this:
£20,000 in an average savings account with a gross interest rate of 1% will pay £20,000 at 1% per annum equalling £200 per year before tax
What is the alternative? A Spanish Tax Compliant Bond
Setting up a Spanish tax compliant bond is no more difficult than setting up a bank account. Once you have invested you have easy access to your money: regular and one-off withdrawals, to suit your needs.
The returns over the last few years have been: 2012 8.0%
2013 7.6%
2014 7.5%
2015 10.3%
2016 5.8%
The growth on a Spanish tax compliant bond is free of tax until a withdrawal is made. Even then only the growth is subject to tax. Any tax due is paid directly to the Hacienda and no Modelo 720 declaration is required for holders of this kind of bond. The bond can also be held jointly so there should be no liability to succession tax on the first death. The bond is backed by an AA rated financial institution which is subject to a strict legal and regulatory environment, to European Law, and having to comply with all applicable European directives and regulations and to meet European solvency margins. Under EU law, assets are to be used to repay policy holders should the company be wound up. Please remember that not all bonds are Spanish tax compliant. If you would like further information about the Spanish tax compliant bond, please give us a call for a no obligation chat.
