Romanian police join anti-pickpocket force Continued from Front These targets for the Eastern European sneak-thief gangs, who come from Romania and Bulgaria, stretch from Valle de La Orotava to la isla Baja (Garachico), the metropolitan area, and the tourist areas of Los Cristianos and Las Americas in the South.

And Romanian police officers have been flown in to collaborate with the National Police and Guardia Civil, because “they know how these criminals work”.

Tenerife Cabildo subdelegate Guillermo Díaz Guerra, also worried about the increase of pick-pocket gangs, helping themselves to wallets, watches and phones, considers “these careless robberies to be seasonal, and usually last until Easter”.

Yet it is actually the first time the authorities have actually recognised this criminal activity on the island throughout the winter.

And although Díaz Guerra is most reluctant to name the criminals’ nationality, sources say the gangs comprise Romanians, as has been stated repeatedly via social

media, and also Bulgarians.

In fact, photos of nine individuals, believed to be at the heart of the criminal gangs, have been circulated on social media. And Díaz Guerra believes they are operating all over the island, but mainly in the South.

He says the criminal gangs

always employ various scams, sometimes pretending to be blind or deaf, the most reported con on social media.

That prompted the Canary Island Deaf Federation to issue a statement last week, insisting its members never resort to asking for funds on the street.

The sub-delegate also cited another scam: the affectionate woman who approaches elderly people and starts to flatter them, at the same time removing their wallet, purse or watch.

Finally, said Diaz Guerra, another popular scam is practised by the well-dressed

“tourist”, who enters luxury restaurants and steals handbags or backpacks from the backs of chairs, or out of cloakrooms.

He also made it clear, in his quest not to blame Romanians, that the security forces did not provide images of the nine individuals circulated on social media sites. “They do not correspond to any person arrested by the Police or Guardia Civil,” he stressed.

But he can hardly protest about the 17 Romanian pickpockets arrested before Christmas by police in the South, on charges of fraud, criminal deception and theft.

Or the presence of Romanian police on the island.

The Spanish cops, who believe there could be up to 500 Eastern Europeans involved in the mammoth pickpocketing enterprise, are also considering charging them with being involved in organised crime when they are nabbed.

That could lead to the individuals concerned being held in custody, which would be approved by many people, victims or not.

Such a good place to buy first home BRITISH relocation service MoveHub has analysed 33 countries by comparing property prices for 2016 with average salaries to determine the best countries for firsttime buyers.

And Spain has come out second-best in the world for first-time buyers. The United Arab Emirates topped the list, thanks to an almost 8% drop in property prices last year.

Spain saw a 2.2% increase in salaries against a 5.75% drop in property prices, putting it in second place, followed by Greece, Singapore and Switzerland.

MoveHub said in a statement: “Countries with the highest salary growth enjoyed more affordable property prices, or even prices in decline, making them the best places for first-time buyers.”

Dad of two is killed on birthday holiday IT should have been a relaxing holiday break for British couple Daryl Bhandal and his partner, from Woolwich, South London, but it ended in tragedy within hours.

only other contender for the post of Secretary General, Juan Moreno Yagüe (Andalusia), by a huge margin: 128,743 votes (89,09%), to Mr. Yagüe’s 15,772 (10.91%).

A delighted Iglesias said: “Party members have given us an order - unity and humility.”

Police officer kills himself

A NATIONAL Police officer committed suicide by shooting himself with his own gun while on duty at Gran Canarias Court house, in Las Palmas.

According to sources the officer, whose brother is also a member of the National Police force, had been assigned to transferring

detainees to and from there for years.

He was said to have been well-respected by colleagues, and no one realised that he was depressed.

News of the suicide caused a commotion in the Las Palmas Court-house between his fellow officers, auxiliaries and court civil servants.

At midnight last Friday, on his 36th birthday and following their earlier arrival at the four-star Lagos de Cesar Hotel, in Puerto de Santiago, he was said to have been struck by a cleaner’s “Wet Floor” sign.

It was thrown by fellowguest Michelle Peterson, who had been teased about her make-up. This, it is believed, sparked a violent struggle between Mr Bhandal and Ms Peterson’s partner, John Vout (below), in the hotel.

Tragically, Mr Bhandal, a 36-year-old building-firm owner (pictured), died in hospital of a heart attack a few hours later, having sustained severe head injuries. The peaceful, westcoast resort was shocked as details emerged, while friends in England, offering condolences on social media, spoke of a devoted family man and fitness enthusiast.

It is not known whether the other couple involved knew Mr Bhandal and his partner.

Police were called at midnight after reports of the fight, and

Mr Bhandal was taken to hospital. The other couple, both 27, were later arrested.

Mr Vout, captured by police as he tried to escape the scene, had facial injuries, including a severely-bitten lip.

The couple appeared in Arona Court on Monday, and Mr Vout was detained in custody, on suspicion of murder. His partner was released on bail “with conditions”.

But Mr Vout was also released the following day, with charges, having paid a bail fee.

It is believed that other circumstances, such as the victim’s alcohol level, may have influenced Mr Bhandal’s death, and pathologists are understood to have ordered further tests.

The initial examination indicated the Brit’s death could have been caused by a mixture of booze and the blows he took during the fight.

As is customary in Spain, the results of the post-mortem have not been made public.

But the final conclusions about his death by experts are expected to play a part in the formal accusation prosecutors could end up making against Mr Vout.

The family of the deceased have flown here to attend the court proceedings, and Mr Bhandal’s sister, Carly said: “We’re devastated.

“We have no idea how long we’ll be here for. Obviously, we want justice, but our main priority is to bring Daryl home.”

A witness, who did not want to be named, said he saw the Brit rowing with a lady at around 10.30 on Friday night.

“I was walking by the hotel with my wife and two kids and we saw him outside on a terrace,” he said. “He was really agitated.

“He was arguing with her about somebody inside the restaurant and I heard him say, ‘he shouldn’t talk to me like that’. He was swearing, angry and agitated.

“Maybe I should have stopped and said, ‘Mate, you should go home and relax’.”

The 36-year-old witness, who was born in Romania and lives in the UK, is staying at a hotel across the road from where Mr Bhandal was staying.

He is with his British wife and two small boys, aged four and nine, and said his family were stunned when they heard about the death.

“My wife is still in shock,” he said. “ She is really affected by this. We are just a normal family, and we saw the guy just before he died.”

Among the many social media tributes to the deceased was one from a friend, saying: “Absolute pleasure knowing you. Top bloke and a brilliant father.”

Floor-clause mortgages: How to reclaim money SOME 150 people attending a public meeting in Adeje Cultural Centre on Wednesday learned more about the controversial mortgage “floor clause” or “clausula suelo”, and how they can reclaim money from Spanish banks.

The floor clause was, in effect, a scheme to keep mortgage interest rates artificially high over a number of years, which has been ruled illegal

by Spanish courts and, ultimately, the European Court of Justice.

The meeting’s main speaker was Pedro Herrera, from AIDCAE, a consumer organisation for bank and credit union clients in Spain, which is taking action on behalf of thousands of people throughout the country.

He addressed a number of issues, and also spoke about the parallel issue of mortgage costs, paid by clients and

which, in most cases, can now be reclaimed from banks as well as the over-charged mortgage sums.

He was very clear on a couple of key points: the courts have ruled that the practice was wrong, and that banks MUST repay affected clients, as long as they make a claim.

In other words, the banks will not seek you out and offer you money back if you don’t claim.

Banks have been given a month to put their repayment machinery in place, and that month ends on Wednesday (22nd Feb).

People can initiate a claim whenever they like, either with a lawyer or using an association such as ADICAE. The consumer group hopes to have an office here in the South soon. And, from Monday, it will install someone dedicated solely to this matter.

It costs just 40 euros to join this organisation, and then 36 euros annually.

And, obviously, it will represent you over a huge range of consumer matters if you’re a member. If you do enlist, it will represent you at your bank on the mortgage

costs, and any other issues you may have.

Pedro Herrera also repeated the association’s firm belief that any letter your bank might have asked you to sign, renouncing any future claims regarding the floor clause in your mortgage, is not legal, and, in fact, is indicative of further abusive practice.

A representative from Adeje consumers’ office, the OMIC, also told the meeting that it has standard letters/forms which the public can use to make their initial claim to the bank.

The OMIC’s offices are in the

Hacienda building, beside the town’s main post office.

Once an individual has written to his/her bank, the bank has three months to respond, with an offer!

The belief is that most banks will pay up because the court rulings have been fairly clear.

But in some cases, hiring a lawyer might be your only option.

The OMIC office staff in Adeje are always happy to advise on any consumer issue. There is generally someone there who speaks English, and the staff have a good track record of solving problems.

Reverón is facing more legal action SPAIN’S Supreme Court has confirmed former Arona Mayor José Alberto González Reverón’s seven-year ban from public office for abuse of power, relating to the building of the Sir Anthony Hotel, in Las Americas.

And Antonio Luis Sosa Carballo, his former Minister of Town Planning and Environment, received an 8½-year ban from public office for continued abuse of authority, hiring four known, unqualified individuals during his 2007-2011 term in office. This was a separate part of the Arona Case, in which González Reverón was sentenced to a 17-year ban from public office for crimes against urban planning and abuse of authority, relating to more than 200 licences and 75 irregular contracts during the 2003-2007 period of his reign.

The Provincial Court, comprising Lucía Machado, María Vega and Aurelio Santana, who presided in the Arona case, also heard this separate case.

And there is still another sentence pending, regarding another case against González Reverón, and former Local Police Deputy Inspector Hortensia García.

Prosecutor Jaime SerranoJover is demanding a nineyear ban from public office for González Reverón. He is also seeking a 10-year ban for Carbello for the same crime, plus a year’s imprisonment for embezzling public funds.

The latest sentences against González Reverón are pending ratification by the Supreme Court, together with those of 11 others convicted.

Serrano-Jover said: “There were clear indications of bribery.”

And during the two-day court case, there was no mention of the privileges available to the former mayor at the Sir Anthony Hotel, in Las Americas, where he could enjoy two rooms in his name.

González Reverón, during his hearing, assured the court that construction work on the Sir Anthony Hotel was a regulated procedure, a statement denied by the municipal technicians in court.

Even Rafael Estartús, representing the Mare Nostrum group which owned the hotel, explained that a minor work licence was requested with the intention, subsequently, of seeking a major work licence.

The plan, he said, was to renovate the hotel totally, and that the then Arona Mayor was aware of the hotel’s intentions.

But González Reverón said he never intended to favour Estartús. He also stated that he did not know when the construction works began at the hotel.

But this proved to be a lie, thanks to recordings between Estartús and the former mayor, which list the favours he did for the mayor, with room availability, without him going through the reception.

Adeje libraries clock up nearly 27,000 customers ADEJE’S libraries continue to be a valuable resource for the public, with almost 27,000 registered visits last year, during which staff carried out over 34,000 consultations.

The majority of visits were to the main library in Adeje Cultural Centre (24,000), followed by Armeñime, the Canarian library, Tijoco and Fañabe.

Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz, the Councillor with responsibility: said: “The profile of the library-user has changed since the creation of the university campus here in the cultural centre.

“There is a notable increase in the demand for books relating to tourism as a career. But we are seeing more members of the Adeje public using the libraries as a research source.”

On average, 1,718 people visited a library in the borough each month, with just over three-quarters of those being adults, and slightly more women than men. And the busiest days were Mondays and Tuesdays.

There was an average of 32 Wi-Fi connections with the library network daily, while 14,529 people used the study sections of the libraries, during the week and at weekends.

The most requested books for younger readers were Sponge Bob books, and Bach for my Baby. In the audio-visual section, most in demand were The Wonderful World of Animals, and Disney’s Magic English plus, among other titles.

Slightly older readers were reading Ciudad de Cristal, and a number of books belonging to the Diario Greg (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) series.

Third-level students sought titles on the economy, sociology, leisure and tourism and accountancy.

Couple rescued from drowning

A BRITISH couple were airlifted to safety in Tenerife after getting into severe difficulties while swimming off the Northern coast, during stormy weather on Tuesday.

The couple, aged 45 and 46, were swimming in the Charco de La Laja area, which is renowned for its strong currents.

The emergency services were called out, and crew members with the rescue helicopter were able to pick them out from the air, off the coastal area of San Juan de la Rambla.

Despite the gusty conditions, which made hovering very difficult for the helicopter pilot, they were plucked to safety, one after the other.

But the rescuers were just in time because the pair came perilously close to rocks, which were being battered by strong waves.

Rescuers said the couple had both shown signs of neardrowning in the incident.

They were both suffering from hypothermia and were taken to hospital in the North for treatment.

A TRUCK driver had a miraculous escape on Wednesday, following an accident in rainswept conditions on the TF-1 motorway near Fañabe.

His lorry landed across the barrier on the central reservation and overturned. But despite the seriousness of the accident, he suffered only minor cuts to his hands.

The driver told police that he had aqua-planed in the rain and lost control. No other vehicles were involved, although the incident caused lengthy delays because it affected traffic in both directions.

Chinese duo grew tons of marijuana NATIONAL Police officers have discovered a Chinese man, responsible for cultivating thousands of marijuana plants at his León home, in north-west Spain.

The building contained 140, 600-watt lamps, using as much electricity as a small factory, which was stolen from the mains.

The Police also found details of a second address, where they discovered another

Chinese male using stolen electricity to grow many more plants and bulbs.

Following their arrest, and the confiscation of 3,523 plants, the officers learned that the two men had not left the premises for several months.

They were, it was determined, existing in what could only be described as sub-human conditions to try to escape detection.

Former anti-drugs officer such a dope

A FORMER Guardia Civil chief, who once led a tough fight against organised crime and the battle to stop drug gangs swamping towns and cities with narcotics, has been jailed for a plot to land hashish on a Marbella beach.

The trial of Valentin Fernandez made headlines across Europe when he stood before the jury, accused of colluding with Moroccan and French drugs gangs.

Evidence of corruption at the highest levels of the Guardia Civil hit the organisation’s reputation hard, and dented the public’s confidence hugely.

Lieutenant Fernandez was former head of the Costa del Sol’s EDOA, its organised crime and anti-drug team.

He was brought down, remarkably, by a grubby plot to land two tonnes of hashish at La Araña, having spent years fighting drug gangs and receiving commendations for his actions.

Fernandez, along with more than 30 others, including a former Malaga football player, was eventually sentenced to 18 years behind bars.

He was convicted of conspiring to land the drugs, money-laundering and also passing on information crucial to the drug gangs in their attempts to evade detection.

Jurors were given a report, nearly 300 pages in length, which detailed the ring of corruption surrounding Fernandez.

Safety first - but not at this port’s barrier AUTHORITIES at Los Cristianos Port could never have imagined the problems they stirred up after installing a barrier there.

There have been various complaints, not only from disabled people in wheelchairs and on mobility

scooters, but also from pedestrians with prams or pushchairs, along with the emergency services.

The shortcomings came to a head on Sunday, 5th February, when a person suffered a heart attack and local police arrived to assist the victim. An ambulance and firefighters were summoned, but couldn’t get passed the barrier.

The victim was revived, but the emergency crews had to locate port authorities holding the barrier’s remote control.

It is lifted only until 11am daily, when delivery trucks come and go, and is causing serious problems in the area.

The area is listed as an “emergency access” for pedestrians in the Los Cristianos

THE man who stole jewellery worth 30,000 euros from the Goya film awards believed the items were merely “trinkets”.

The thief, in his fifties, confessed after turning himself in to Madrid police

after they went missing from the prestigious Spanish gala at the Hotel Marriott Auditorium.

Four sets of expensive cufflinks, one ring and some earrings by the Suarez Joyeria brand were removed by the man, who had been working at the event for a sub-contracted company.

Only when media reports revealed their true worth did the worker, who had no previous convictions, admit his crime.

The jewellery, hidden in a dressing room, had been left over from a collection that could be borrowed by redcarpet stars invited to the event.

ISIS direct-threats warning ‘isn’t true’ A SPANISH Government report, said to be warning of Islamic State fanatics issuing “direct threats” and a “largescale massacre” to tourist hotspots in Spain and other European countries, is simply not true, says the Home Office, The threats were, according to Monday’s MailOnline website, found on social media, amid fears that terror group ISIS also recruiting translators and foreign jihadists from the country.

But the Spanish Home Office has dismissed the report, saying the Government is not concerned at present about any specific threat of terrorist attacks.

The rebuff comes just weeks after police in San Sebastian, in the north of Spain, arrested a Moroccan boxing coach on suspicion of recruiting for ISIS. The man, suspected of recruiting for the terror group, was said to have specialised in “sending foreign fighters to Turkey, where they received instructions from DAESH to commit attacks in Europe”, said the Ministry in a statement, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS. More recently, Another Moroccan was arrested by police in Gran Canaria. The 33-year-old was, said the Interior Ministry, planning to carry out a terrorist attack.

Police said he “constituted a potential threat to national security, having manifested his clear intention to carry out a terrorist attack of great scope and repercussion”.

The Moroccan, living illegally in Spain, had been under investigation since 2012. He was considered potentially dangerous, and had become more radical in a short time.

The probe revealed that he had developed an extensive, social-media presence, publishing jihadist content supporting DAESH. He had also shared violent videos, openly-approved terrorist attacks and even posed next to his wife and young son, wearing clothes with emblems of the terrorist organisation, holding weapons.

A 36-year-old Spanish woman from Alicante, planning to travel to Syria with her four children to join DAESH, has also been detained by police.

She was set to make the journey until she learned that her husband, allegedly a high-ranking member of the terrorist group, had died.

The woman had gone through all the necessary procedures, and had even denounced the fictional disappearance of her husband, and father of the children, to obtain absolute parental authority of the kids.

Investigators discovered that she carried out propaganda through social networks, using aggressive slogans, jihadist emblems, and published “extremely violent” videos of her own.

Since 2015, when the Ministry of the Interior raised the Anti-Terrorism Alert Level to 4, the security forces have detained a total of 190 jihadist terrorists.

Spain’s “direct threats” were outlined within an official government report,

according to the MailOnline.

True or not, it is sure to raise fears among holiday-makers about a repeat of Tunisia’s gun massacre in June 2015, in which ISIS fanatic Seifeddine Rezgui shot 38 people, including 30 British tourists in the coastal resort of Port El Kantaoui.

The Spanish Government’s so-called official document, it is claimed, said: “ISIS has been publishing in Spanish, which means an increase in the risk of its influence on radicals living in our country.”

It also stated that last year, “DAESH launched a campaign to hire Spanish translators, which suggests a growing interest in attracting Spanish-speaking foreign fighters”.

In January 2016, ISIS issued a chilling video threat to launch terror attacks in Spain, declaring: “We will recover our land from the invaders.”

Spain is currently Level Four on the anti-terror alert, which is the same ranking as the UK. And around 15 million of the 65m foreign tourists who flock to Spain every year are British.

A British Foreign Office spokesman pointed to its own official travel advice for the country, telling MailOnline: “Our online travel advice contains thorough information on staying safe abroad, including terrorism threats, and we keep it under constant review.”

Former Met Police counterterror officer David Videcette, who investigated the 7/7 London bombings, said an attack on Spain was “very possible”.

He added that some Spanish resorts could be vulnerable to “truck” attacks, like the ones carried out in Nice and Berlin.

“They may well be looking to attack specific countries with tourists,” he added. “It’s very possible that Costa Brava and Costa del Sol, those sort of places, could be on someone’s target list.”

Official guidelines for travelling to Spain says there is a “general threat from terrorism” and that attacks “could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners”.

Tourists are warned to be “vigilant”, amid warnings that a number of Spanish nationals “successfully travelled to Syria and Iraq”.

According to Spanish authorities, 181 alleged jihadists have been detained since 2015, when the country increased its terror alert to category four on a five-point scale.

Yet Spain has been spared any incident since March 2004, when bombs exploded on commuter trains in Madrid, leaving 191 dead in attacks claimed by the AlQaeda-inspired militants.

Last November, two suspected ISIS terrorists, who, say authorities, were willing to carry out attacks in Spain, were arrested in Barcelona and Madrid.

The Moroccan pair were “dangerous” and “directed and controlled” by the terror group, said Spanish Interior Ministry officials.

Earlier that month, four people suspected of trying to recruit so-called Caliphate Cubs - child soldiers as young as 12 to fight for ISIS - were held in Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta.

And in October, two Muslim preachers accused of supporting ISIS were held in the Ibizan party resort of San Antonio.

Let’s have Brit working hours

SPANISH workers seem to be more in favour of a more compact British 9-5 day, according to a new study by sociological organisation Ulises.

Results showed that 86% of full-time employees wanted the change. A further three out of four believed the working day should end at 6pm, while 64% signalled that they would like to turn the clocks back an hour, to British GMT. And of the 10,303 adult respondents, another 67.5% showed willingness to have a lunch break of under one hour, in return for an earlier finish.

Yet a resolute 40% told researchers they would not be willing to bring their lunchtime forward to avoid disturbing Mediterranean meal-time norms.

Dead whale taken to wildlife centre

A DEAD Cuvier-beaked whale, found off the coast of Buenavista del Norte, has been taken to Garachico port and handed over to the Wildlife Recovery Centre for examination.

Emergency services, which received a call about an “object” floating off the coast, dispatched a maritime rescue boat and helicopter to the scene.

The aircraft crew thought the object was a bottlenose dolphin, and the rescue boat transported it to the port, where Wildlife Recovery Centre staff identified the animal.

NEWS IN BRIEF Motorway fatality

A MAN from Venezuela, aged 44, died last Tuesday night after being struck by a tourist bus on the TF-1, near Guimar.

The incident happened on the north carriageway by the bus stop, in the direction of Santa Cruz.

Guardia Civil officers arrived on the scene quickly and were able to divert traffic. But paramedics confirmed that the man had died instantly on impact.

Joint drug-op success

GUARDIA Civil officers, collaborating with the tax agency Agencia Tributaria, have unmasked a drugtrafficking gang.

In the operation, carried out jointly in Madrid and Tarragona, police arrested two Dominicans, who have been detained in custody.

Around 78kg of cocaine was discovered in pressed sheets, which had been hidden inside boxes of bananas being shipped from the Dominican Republic.

Murder suspect caught

A MOLDOVAN national, arrested in El Campello on the Costa Blanca during a spot-check, is wanted for murder in his own country.

The 39-year-old man, a Torrevieja resident since 2015, was intercepted by the police while travelling on a bus from Alicante to Paris.

Officers who stopped the vehicle discovered the man had false documents. Then, during a detailed search of his belongings, they learned of his true identity, and found 3,500 euros in cash.

He was wanted on two Interpol arrest warrants: one for shooting a fellow national and then beating him to death; the other for embezzlement.

Canaries top chart for sexual diseases

THE Canary Islands has registered more than 4,000 new cases of HIV since 2000, and these figures have remained stable, compared with previous periods.

However, the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network has detected a increase in sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as Syphilis, Gonorrhoea or Chlamydia in Spain, and, more specifically, in the Canaries.

Dermatologist Agustín Viera (pictured), the medical director of Ivalia Dermis, said the increase in recent years was down to “relaxed, sexual habits”.

He added: “Some 41% of adults admit that when they have occasional sex, they do not protect themselves.

We perceive a greater use of protection by younger people, but they say this to avoid pregnancies and not to prevent a sexually transmitted disease.”

Doctor Viera also believes that this phenomenon is through

the lack of protection, but mainly being unaware that they have contracted a STD because there are no initial symptoms.

“The moment a patient feels a strange discharge, itching, a wart that was not there before, or a wound, he or she must see a doctor,” he said.

He considers that the current system, which requires patients to visit their GP when they notice one of these symptoms, generates a “embarrassment” for them. This results in these

patients not seeking medical attention.

To counter that response, Dr Viera is working on an accessibility system, and is establishing areas to treat sexually transmitted diseases.

The LGS-Analysis laboratory has warned that the Canaries is one of the communities declaring more cases of Syphilis, with nearly 12% of victims positive for every 100,000 inhabitants. This figure far exceeds the national average of 4.28%.

Agustín Viera, also offers data on another sexuallytransmitted disease, for which the Canaries is above average. That is Gonorrhoea, accounting for 8.23% cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the national average is 3.84%.

The most lethal STD, with most victims during the Eighties and Nineties, was AIDS, Spain maintaining a rate of over 10% per 100,000 inhabitants. Transmission in men who have sex with men is the most common (51.2%), followed by heterosexual (28.5%) and 4.4% among injecting drug-users.

Junior Carnival Queen

FIVE people, aged between 27-36, were injured in a car accident on Sunday on the TF-1 around Arico.

One of the injured parties, a 32-year-old man, had to be transferred to Candelaria Hospital after suffering abdominal and serious chest trauma. The other four, a 36-year-old man, two women aged 31 and a 27-year-old girl, had minor injuries and were treated by paramedics.

The incident occurred around 7.20am, when emergency services received a call that two vehicles heading towards Santa Cruz had collided near Las Eras, and that one was on fire. Firefighters extinguished the flames.

Police theft bonanza

ALICANTE police have recovered some 400 highvalue items which had been stolen, including latestgeneration mobile phones, jewellery, computers and tablets, valued at about 100,000 euros.

The products would have been transferred by a network of “mules” to Algeria for resale.

Seventeen members of the network have been arrested by the Guardia Civil in the second phase of the operation “Bijouterie”.

Their ages range from 23-58 and their nationalities range from Spanish, Algerian, Bolivian and Moroccan.

In addition to the stolen items, about 5,000 euros in cash was seized. And two mobile-phone repair shops were also raided.

AMAIA Hernández Perdomo was chosen from 20 candidates to be this year’s Junior Carnival Queen in Santa Cruz.

Sex-shop break-in goes flat on couple TWO people broke into a Marbella sex shop on the eve of St Valentine’s Day… and walked out empty-handed!

They failed to help themselves to a single item of lingerie or a sex toy, to the surprise of shop owner Laura Tona.

The 43-year-old Londoner, baffled that none of her

valuable stock, including upmarket toys, had vanished, said: “It’s totally bizarre. They took absolutely nothing.”

Laura, who has been running the successful store in Nueva Andalucia for seven years, added: “They broke the door down to enter but didn’t take any stock or cash.

“It really was stupid of them because we clearly have security cameras,and police are dealing with it.”

Thieving gang such a problem Injured driver trapped for residents A MAN was badly injured in Guia de Isora on Tuesday morning after his car went off the road and overturned, trapping him inside.

Firefighters stabilised the car, which skidded off the road and fell three metres into a garden.

They then freed the driver, who suffered a severe chest trauma and was disorientated.

Paramedics took the man to the Green Hospital, in Las Americas.

Cash-machine bombers nailed by diligent police THE Police have smashed a gang of thieves, who were using explosives to blow up cash machines in Spain.

THREE young men have been held by the Guardia Civil on suspicion of being involved in numerous robberies with force to homes and public premises in the North.

Officers are also investigating another seven people, all residents in Santa Cruz and aged between 20-23, all allegedly involved in the thieving.

The incidents took place last year in September and December, creating huge concern for residents and business-owners.

With regards to the home break-ins, two men were alleged to have committed 18 robberies. Six other suspects are being investigated for providing the robbers with rental cars, to make

their identities difficult. A third man involved, whose whereabouts was unknown, had various outstanding arrest warrants and gave himself in voluntary to Tenerife II Prison.

Both the detainees and the seven under investigation will also be charged with belonging to a criminal organisation.

This probe uncovered a second group of criminals, also committing robberies with force, but this time to public establishments in the North. They were closely related to the other group, through friendship and family ties.

Finally, a 10th person was identified and detained for his alleged involvement in 10 robberies, always at night time.

At the time of his arrest, the suspect had several specialised tools in his vehicle, used for breaking in.

At least 23 people were arrested over a period of several months, but details are only now being released.

The gang have been involved in numerous crimes, including burglary, identity

theft, stealing high-value vehicles and the use of gas and explosives, to blast open cash machines.

Their offences were committed partly in Catalonia and also in Valencia, Vitoria and Pamplona. And later it was discovered that gang members had started operating in Madrid.

In one robbery cashmachine robbery, nails were thrown across roads in the area to hinder the chances

of police following them.

Several private vehicles were damaged, and a postman was injured when a nail went into his foot.

Diligent police have also tracked down several people who were handling the stolen property.

Checks on the men showed that a number had committed crimes in other European countries, including Sweden, Germany and Switzerland.

Endesa is hit by bill fraud THE Guardia Civil has tweeted a warning to all its subscribers, warning them of a resurrected invoice scam.

It attempts to extract information, and, possibly money, from those who receive what are convincing but fake e-mailed bills, supposedly from Endesa.

The dodgy invoices show large amounts of money due for payment, together with a link which encourages consumers to check their

bill and consumption. This leads to a new site, which then attempts to obtain information from worried individuals.

The Guardia Civil campaign, which warns consumers not to click on the link, also tells them to delete any e-mail of this type that they receive.

Paedo, 70, is sent to prison for life BRITISH paedophile Mark Frost, aged 70, who was arrested in Alicante last week and extradited to the UK, has been jailed for life at the Old Bailey and warned that he will probably die in prison.

The former teacher was initially identified when a contact in the Netherlands, arrested for owning child pornography, had a video of Frost abusing children in Thailand.

The pensioner, who had been a teacher for a number of years, as well as a scout leader, admitted 45 sex offences against nine children

in Thailand between 2009 and 2012 and two British pupils in the Nineties.

These offences including rape, sexual assault and inciting sexual activity with a child under 13.

His victims were aged between 10-15. Judge Mark Lucraft said his crimes were “the most appalling catalogue of sexual abuse”.

He added: “It is clear you have an obsession with sexually abusing young boys with evidence of planning and grooming.

“Your conduct towards each and every one of these victims is horrific and deeply disturbing.”

He added that Frost was someone who would continue to pose a risk to children.

GUARDIA Civil officers are still trying to locate the person who stabbed a 37-year old homeless man in Callao Salvaje at around 3am on Tuesday.

The victim, who suffered a serious injury to his side, was involved in a fight with his knife attacker.

But told the Guardia Civil and Local Police that he did not know him.

The homeless man was attended by paramedics and then taken to Hospiten Sur initially, before being switched to Candelaria hospital.

Guardia Civil is hot on heels of terrorist group

THE Guardia Civil, as part of the Operation Nobel-Constancia framework, has unearthed a former stash belonging to terrorist group PCE(r)GRAPO in the Sierra Norte countryside of Madrid.

It contained significant information on the group’s potential targets, as well as internal documentation about its operations, and basic logistics material to be used in the case they were forced to flee.

The stash was located in an area which had previously

been inspected by the Guardia Civil, because information received pointed to the same location as a meeting place and campsite for many PCE(r)-GRAPO members.

Some months prior to the find, material for sleeping outside had been found. But although a more exhaustive examination has not yet been carried out, initial investigations would seem to point to the stash dating back to 2000.

That was when the terrorist group was going through a major managerial and organisational re-vamp.

In addition to a blow to its infrastructure, which, until now, had remained unknown, the location of this stash of

material, used by members of the terrorist group, could possibility lead to clearing up certain attacks by unknown perpetrators.

Forensic examination of the material found will determine whether it will be possible, in the future, to resolve attacks committed by the members of PCE(r)-GRAPO. And although the terrorist group has had no operational capabilities since 2007, the PCE(r)-GRAPO has not renounced its armed fight, focussing its efforts on recruiting new members.

That’s why the Guardia Civil is keeping various lines of investigation open, in the hope of finding the part of its infrastructure that still remains intact; thus averting

its possible use in the case of a hypothetical return to terrorist activity.

In relation to PCE(r)GRAPO, the Guardia Civil’s main priority is still to locate the remains of Publio Cordón, the Zaragoza business owner, kidnapped on 27th June 1995. Older members of the group are currently under investigation in these proceedings.

But although the Guardia Civil arrested all members of this terrorist group-inhiding in 2007, the group has not renounced its armed struggle. That is why investigations continue, aimed at disbanding the entire group, and at resolving all those terrorist actions yet to be resolved.

Youngsters die in Sharp-eyed police sea-bed car terror find fake Ferraris OFFICERS from the National Police, who spotted a fake Ferrari in Benidorm, created from the shell of a much cheaper car, traced the workshop in which it had been compiled.

They also identified the seller, via a web advert, and traced the car to Sils, in Girona.

Police visited a premises there and discovered 14 vehicles, on their way to being transformed into “supercars”.

They also found four fakes ready for sale, a number of parts, fibre-glass moulds, speedometers, Ferrari stickers and false registration documents.

And, as a bonus, the officers, in the course of arresting three workshop men, also found a fully-equipped marijuana plantation.

TWO lads, aged 17 and 18, died after the car they were in plunged into the sea in Laredo, Cantabria.

The teenagers were unable to get out of the vehicle, which fell four metres from the municipal docks and ended up on its roof in six metres of water.

A third boy escaped and was transferred to hospital, suffering from hypothermia.

Police sources suggest that one of the youngsters

was driving the Fiat Bravo without a licence, and may have lost control.

Rescue attempts were hampered by the depth and freezing conditions, the first Guardia Civil officer on the scene being unable to reach the car.

Three firefighters wearing neoprene suits couldn’t dive deep enough because they lacked oxygen tanks.

But Red Cross divers reached the vehicle, which was removed by crane with the bodies still inside.

Arrested for false licence

A POLISH man was arrested in Las Galletas last Friday for falsifying an official document, and driving without a valid driving licence.

A passer-by alerted officers that three people, who had attempted to rob a couple of tourists, were driving around Prince Felipe Avenue in a Chevrolet Aveo.

The cops stopped them and asked the occupants for their documentation. The driver showed them a Romanian driving licence, which one officer realised was false, and the youngster was arrested.

Airport murder: suspect arrested AN Irishman has been arrested over the suspected murder of a homeless man at Malaga airport last October.

Steven Allford, 51, was found on a bench with his trousers pulled down and ham placed on his exposed buttocks, while his genitals had been placed in an empty tuna can.

Following a European arrest warrant, James O’Byrne, 58, was picked up by Spanish police in Algeciras.

Two Finnish nationals and a Brit are still wanted by police after they were seen taunting Mr Allford in a video posted on Facebook.

It was recorded on the night he died, but has since been removed from the socialnetworking site.

Paraglider’s painful landing

A FEMALE paraglider was injured after landing on Adeje’s La Enramada beach on Monday afternoon. The 50-year-old, who damaged a hip, was taken by paramedics to Hospiten Sur for treatment.

Woman, 64, has twins A WOMAN of 64, who has given birth to twins in the northern Spanish city of Burgos, is the second-eldest in Spain to have babies.

She has been identified by the initials M.I.A. only, and was pipped

by Carmen Bousada, who had two children at the age of 67 but died of cancer three years later.

The twins, a boy and a girl weighing 5lb 3oz and 4lb 8oz, respectively, were born by caesarean section after their mother experienced

vitro fertilisation (the joining of a woman’s egg and a man’s sperm outside the body) in the US. She actually gave birth to a daughter six years ago via the

same method, But the regional government of Castille and Leon placed the girl into the care of a relative in 2014.

That followed social worker’s reports of issues with her personal hygiene, clothing, and absenteeism from school.

The regional authorities would not be drawn on the fate of the new arrivals, a spokesman saying: “The government will not yet decide on what happens with the new-born children.”

A 62-year-old Galician woman, amid much controversy, also gave birth last year, having had a caesarean section.

The perfect day to propose marriage JUST a relaxing day out with no plans … that’s what Suresh told Sonia on Tuesday.

But as it was 14th February, St Valentine’s Day, she should, perhaps, have been on her guard.

Instead, she was swept off her feet in a romantic whirl.

A speedboat voyage, helicopter ride, two special meals and an accepted proposal later, and they were sitting on Las Vistas beach, Los Cristianos, in a heart-shaped ring of flowers.

Suresh from London, and New Yorker Sonia, met five months ago through family friends who live in Tenerife.

They are now planning a June wedding here on their favourite holiday island, before settling down in London.

Suresh had been busy, pulling his plans together, the day before.

And after meeting early on Valentine’s Day, they were soon skimming over the sea in a speedboat.

If that made Sonia’s heart leap around a little, the next stop

was about to take her soaring.

Helidream Canarias, in Costa Adeje, took them up for a stylish helicopter ride.

Could the day get any higher? Yes it could, because Saresh produced a ring as they hovered in the air and asked Sonia to marry him, The delighted American said Yes! After landing, it was time for a Chinese meal, a stroll along Los Cristianos promenade … and another surprise for Sonia. “I was still trying to catch my breath after all that had happened, when I saw this beautiful, heart-filled flower display on the beach,” she said.

“I thought it was a nice, romantic gesture involving another

couple. But Saresh led me down to it and we sat there, gazing out to sea.”

Saresh had planned it all to perfection, with the help of a good florist.

And, as the sun started to set, they moved on for a special evening dinner at a local Italian restaurant.

The next day would be another busy one for Saresh. “I’m going to organise our wedding here for June,” he said.

“Most of my friends and family in London know now, and Sonia has told many of her New York friends.”

It should be some wedding because guests from the UK and America will come together in a meeting of the two families here on the island.

Babies’ bacterial blow in hospital

SPAIN’S Ministry of Health has closed the neo-natal, intensivecare unit of a Madrid hospital because 51 babies were affected by a bacterial outbreak.

Of the babies affected by the Serratia marcescens bacteria at the La Paz hospital, 27 have developed some infection.

The remainder are carriers but have not developed any infection, and most tots have now been allowed home. But 11 remain in isolation.

Serratia marcescens is implicated in a wide range of serious infections, including pneumonia, lower respiratory tract infection, urinary tract infection, bloodstream infection, wound infection and meningitis.

Hat-trick of bites

THREE women were injured last Tuesday after being attacked by a dog in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria.

Police were told that the dog had bitten various people, who needed medical assistance, and two ambulances were sent to the scene.

Medical staff attended to all three women, who had wounds from dog bites, two of them minor and the third a bit more severe.

They were taken to Hospital Universitario de Gran Canaria for further treatment.

Tragic father kills himself and his tot

A FATHER killed himself and his oneyear-old daughter after jumping out of a hospital window in Madrid.

Staff at the La Paz Hospital said the 27-year-old man launched himself and his tot out of the four-storey window after a heated argument with his partner.

An emergency services spokesperson Javier Chivite said staff spent 45 minutes trying to resuscitate them both without success.

Hospital representatives said they were unsure how the man was able to open the window because they were normally locked.

Police have launched an investigation into the tragedy.

WHAT do you get if you cross The Apprentice with Record-Breakers?

Something pretty similar to the corporate teambuilding attempt on the Guinness World Record for the most sand-castles built in an hour in one location.

Las Vistas beach, Los Cristianos, was the setting for the challenge, involving 400 workers from JTI (Japan Tobacco International), drawn from Spain, Andorra, and Portugal.

It still left plenty of staff to keep the company ticking over because it has 25,000 staff spread across 90 sites, including a new factory in Santa Cruz.

Ten large zones were marked out in the sand as six coaches of would-be record-breakers arrived from the Hard Rock Hotel in Playa Paraiso. The target stood at 2,230 castles, set in Germany in July 2013.

Maybe the brightly-coloured buckets, spades and clear plastic rulers made it look like child’s play. But although it was great fun, those involved had to adhere to strict guidelines, laid down by the Guinness Book Of Records.

zone included limits to the dimensions of the buckets and spades, minimum height and width requirements for each castle (60cm high

and 60cm wide at the base), and disqualification for any construction not looking like a traditional castle.

between team members was to get runners to fill buckets with sea-water. And no adhesive sprays or thickeners could be used.

The week’s events were organised by Team Factory World. Last June, there was a smaller team-building event involving workers from an Ellesmere Port chemical plant.

This attempt proved extremely tense as the official judges measured and examined the new kingdom of castles. But the weary staff found out later that evening that they had fallen just short of the record target.

It was all supposed to be a learning experience and, anyway, at least they looked as though they were enjoying themselves.

THE matter of the cláusula suelo (floor clause) and the reimbursement of mortgage costs (notary, registry, taxes) is, at present, a “hot” matter expanded everywhere (radio, TV, papers), especially since the last European Court judgement of December 2016.

We must recall that the floor clause and the clause of paymentof-mortgage costs are “abusive” clauses. But they are not the only ones.

There are others like high-default interests or the anticipateddeadline clause. And I believe it would be a good idea to incorporate in this column the main points of one of the articles included in my

When the mortgagor has failed to pay one or more mortgage instalments, the bank (mortgagee) enacts an internal procedure, requiring the debtor to update his situation, including payment of interests and costs.

If the default situation continues, the file is sent to the banks legal department, who start the foreclosing proceeding before a Court.

In many cases, the financial institution asks the debtor to pay, partially, the mortgage instalments (without paying every instalment in full).

But every instalment not paid generates

interest, and the following payments destined to cover the debt are, in fact, imputed (calculated) to such accumulated interests.

Consequently, the outstanding amount is increased day after day. At the time of execution, the overdue sum is higher than expected because the partial payments have been mainly imputed to cover interests.

The affected debtor continues believing that the bank will not foreclose if he pays every month (even not in full).

The surprise comes when he finds out that the bank does execute it because the mortgage is not updated.

If you know you will fail to make the instalment payments, it’s best if you negotiate with the bank to refinance, which means a Refinance Title

Deed should be signed before Notary.

Normally, a waiting period is agreed (in most of the cases, two years) in which interest only is paid. At the deadline, though, the system of payment of capital and interests arises again.

Once the foreclosing proceeding is started, the bank claims all the outstanding amount of the loan (not only the sum debt to date), after a previous, unilateral, notarial liquidation.

What can be done at that time? The execution continues and, normally, cannot be stopped. The outcome is to delay the proceeding as long as possible.

The defence could be based either on formalities, like the lack of personal notification, or in substantive grounds, the existence of abusive clauses, by

means of opposition.

In the first case, the debtor can ask for nullification of procedure to rewind it and restructure it. However, it is interesting to note that there are many cases in which all the proceeding is nullified, enforcing the bank to start a new, foreclosing procedure.

An example of this case is when two banks have merged, so the Mortgage Deed was granted for one bank (say, Bank A), which later merged with another one (creating Bank B) and this last one is foreclosing.

This way, the debtor can bring the exception of lack of active legitimation (of Bank B) because the bank foreclosing is not the one that signed the mortgage.

Other nullification reasons is when the bank starts a foreclosing pro-

ceeding against mortgagee and guarantor.

Many High Courts have ruled that mortgagee and guarantor cannot be issued in the same foreclosing proceeding, nullifying the proceeding.

In any case, the outcome is to roll back the procedure, or start a new one, gaining time.

The most important thing is to act in time.

Do not give up. Make a plea to the Court and interpose all legal measures to minimise the foreclosing effects.

To try to do something a few days before the auction date is a difficult task (although in some cases, the auction could be suspended).

The measures should be prepared from the moment you stop paying a mortgage instalment, because, sooner or later, the bank will foreclose.

Fixed-rate loans a bonus

AT the end of January, Spanish mortgage repayments fell after 12 months of negative rates. The Euribor (Euro Interbank Offered Rate) was at a record low of -0.094%.

And, as most Spanish mortgages are based on this, it means that repayments for homeowners have been going down for some time.

With more investors taking advantage of low interest rates and secure fixed-rate loans, this protects them against any future, potential increases.

In 2016, the Spanish

Mortgage Association reported that 53.3% of home-owners had a fixed-rate mortgage.

The end of last week saw Greece and its debt problems come to the fore again, the Bank of Greece Governor saying that his country needed another urgent bail-out.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and EU disagree with how to deal with the situation, which is adding more pressure to what has already been a difficult start to the year for Europe.

The Euro may be struggling this week,

but there is a bit more market data on the Eurozone schedule than last week.

And with the ECB Monetary Policy Meeting accounts released yesterday (Thursday), we could see GBP-EUR pairing moving upwards, should the re-

sults be as predicted.

Despite their initial belief that Brexit would harm UK growth, the European Commission has since projected an expansion of 1.5%, rather than the 1% it predicted previously.

Wednesday saw the data release of the UK Average Earnings Index (expected to remain flat at 2.8%), the UK Claimant Count Change and the UK Unemployment Rate.

The pound fell with softer data.

Meanwhile, the Joseph Rowntree Foundation Think-Tank reports that almost one-third of the UK population is living on an “inadequate” income.

In the 2014-2015 period, 19 million people were living on less than the MIS (Minimum Income Standard) because incomes remained at the same level, despite increasing household costs.

Those of us living in the Canary Islands, if only for the winter months,

are lucky not to have the worry of expensive electric or gas bills for central heating, etc.

Yet another reason that makes the islands so appealing to expats!

The UK retail sales are, today (Friday), expected to show a positive increase for January. This will be closely monitored because consumerspending has been a big driver of the UK economy post-Brexit vote.

Andy, M25 Traffic Officer The M25 is the busiest motorway in Britain, stretching 117 miles around our capital city. It’s used for 73 million journeys a year, twice as many as it was designed for. In this brand new six-part documentary series we go behind the scenes with the hidden army of traffic controllers, patrol officers, engineers and maintenance workers who work tirelessly around the clock to keep the M25 motorway moving.

From dealing with multiple vehicle pile-ups and assisting the emergency services, to clearing up after lorry drivers, there is never a dull moment where the hidden heroes of the M25 are concerned. But capacity on the iconic motorway is pushed to the max and every hold-up costs the economy thousands of pounds, which often makes the job of those that work on it a race against time. Love it or hate it, one thing’s for sure, after this series you’ll never look at the M25 in the same way again.

In episode one, we meet traffic officers Simon and Gary on their early morning patrol shift as they are faced with a four car pile-up that has closed two lanes of the motorway during rush hour. As they race to reach the collision, Gary explains: “People are getting impatient and starting to use the closed lanes. It’s stopping emergency services reaching the scene.”

Meanwhile, fuelled by tea and toast, control room operator Emily is part of a team keeping a watchful eye on the motorway with the help of more than 1000 CCTV cameras. After two consecutive traffic collisions in the Dartford area, the pressure is on.

Control room operator Sarah says: “Anyone trying to commute in that area today is going to be late... rubberneckers will be causing massive amounts of congestion.”

Throughout this, the animals, plants and people that call the Lake District home have to weather everything that this stunning landscape can throw at them.

Elsewhere, unique Lake District stories continue to unfold. Herdwick sheep give birth to their lambs, signaling the traditional start of the year, while climbers rescue sheep trapped on rocky ledges, caterpillars gingerly ‘disarm’ seed pods so they can feed before the pods explode, and the record floods of December 2015 rip through the fells and towns alike.

Deep within ancient dry-stone walls, baby slugs have the perfect place to hatch, and tiny Jumping Spiders hunt amongst the rocks.

Tourists brave the April showers, while thousands of people take to the water in the biggest lake swimming event in Europe.

From shepherds herding thousands of sheep down from the mountain tops, to Red Squirrels - in one of their few English strongholds burying nuts to feed themselves over winter, to mountaineers braving the frozen peaks, each story takes a new approach to show the challenges of living with the turbulent and unpredictable year.

Tonight viewers will see fifteen would be ninja’s compete in the final of Ninja Warrior UK 2017.

So far no-one has been able to reach the final hurdle and climb Mount Midoriyama. Does one of this year’s finalists have what it takes to be the first ever Ninja Warrior UK? The final course will challenge our contestants over 17 different obstacles. If they complete all of them in the time limit, they will then have scale Mount Midoriyama, a 20 metre high climb against the clock. Only if they complete this, will they be crowned Ninja Warrior UK Can anyone make it all the way and be crowned the UK’s first Ninja Warrior?

Adapted from Len Deighton’s 1978 alternate history novel, and starring Sam Riley and Kate Bosworth, SS-GB premieres on BBC One this spring.

Produced by Sid Gentle Films Ltd and written by Bafta Award-winners Neal Purvis and Robert Wade (Spectre, Skyfall, Casino Royale), SSGB is a complex thriller focusing on British Detective Douglas Archer. Forced to work under the brutal SS in occupied London, Archer is determined to continue to do his job in the service of his country, but against impossible odds.

We first meet Archer in 1941, with the vast majority of England and Wales are under Nazi occupation after losing the Battle of Britain.

Pockets of resistance continue to show their defiance against the occupying German forces, but after a German pilot is murdered by a British Resistance fighter, tensions in London could not be higher.

When investigating what appears to be a simple black market murder, Archer is dragged into a much darker and more treacherous world where the stakes are as high as the ultimate outcome of the war. The elusive American journalist Barbara Barga may hold the key - but can he trust her? And when his lover Sylvia endangers her life by bravely making a stand against the oppressive regime, Archer is forced to confront a deeper dilemma. Can he carry out his duty to defend law and order when he is working for the wrong side? What is he willing to risk in the fight against fascism?

Toby works late into the night, looking stressed and miserable. His eyes scan the figures he’s working on the page: what’s he looking for? His pall descends further as he enters the hotel, only to bump straight into Lucian. The latter is his usual charming self, but there’s an edge of steel underneath as he maintains that he needs Toby needs to work harder.

Meanwhile an unwelcome visitor arrives at the hotel: and Garland is panicked.

The hotel prepares for 50th anniversary celebrations: Lady Hamilton’s getting into the spirit, but she can’t help Toby’s anxiety. He attempts to talk to her about Lucian, but is interrupted by the man himself: there seems to be no escape.

Happy news for Max as Garland summons him and informs him that he’s letting him off work early, something he’d never be so lenient over, were it not for a very special occasion.

Adil attempts to corner Toby and bring him back from the edge of doing something terrible, but Toby’s raging. It’s looking more and more unlikely that they’ll ever reconnect – or that Toby will find anywhere to turn. His last hope lies in Garland, who snaps into actions.

Emma’s still confused about the men in her life – she and Betsey talk about love in war. The tension between Joe and Freddie is palpable: will it spill over? And loved up Lady Hamilton is none too pleased to hear about Garland’s objections to Lucian: she puts up a steely face but it’s hit a nerve: when she makes investigations of her own, things get serious, very quickly.

Meanwhile, sparks fly downstairs, as the 50th anniversary celebrations kick into life. Betsey and Sonny, blissfully in love, start the band off loud – enough to nearly drown out the sirens that start to blare overhead. As Garland frantically staves off unwanted attention from the police at the hotel and Emma is pushed to make a final decision, it becomes clear that it’s not a drill.

Morocco.

The Hairy Bikers are on a mission to find, cook and eat the most delicious chicken and egg recipes in the world.

Chicken was barely eaten in North Africa before the 1970s and now it is the most eaten meat in Morocco. In Tetouan, the gastronomical and poultry capital of the country, the boys experience the full extent of Spanish and Moorish influences on Moroccan cuisine. In the mountains north of Fez, Dave and Si cook a chicken tagine with preserved lemons and olives for some rebel Berbers, before heading into the city itself where they make rose and pistachio ice cream to cool down after a visit to a Hamman. The boys join a hen(na!) party after which they are taught how to make the special pastry for their piece de resistance, chicken pastilla pie.

Nawal El Saadawi is famed as a pioneer in the fight against female genital mutilation, which she herself was subjected to. She has published over 50 novels, memoirs and studies of women’s oppression - translated into many languages and winning numerous international awards.

Nawal El Saadawi relives her magical, though difficult, childhood in a village by the Nile in the 1930s, her work as a doctor there in the 1950s, her years high up in the Ministry of Health, and later in prison under President Sadat. She was on the frontline in Tahrir Square when Egypt rose against President Mubarak in 2011. Today she fronts a forum in her name where the issues she has championed all her life are discussed by crowds of young Egyptians.

When 36-yearold Terry Guest, father of two daughters, had a catastrophic brain injury, he was left with severe disabilities.

As his house was unsuitable for him, the only care available was an old-people’s dementia care home, where he remained for several years.

In need of more day-to-day care and a place of his own, his sister Tracey stepped in to offer help, but her house was also unsuitable. Now DIY SOS and their team of generous South Yorkshire volunteers and suppliers are stepping in to adapt Tracey’s home and also, in a DIY SOS first, build Terry his very own separate pad at the end of the garden. Battling adverse Yorkshire weather, the team’s electrician Billy’s tricks with the electrics and a massive misjudgement in ordering materials, this unique build definitely tests the team’s resolve.

The BRIT Awards 2017 ITV1, 19.30 Dermot O’Leary and Emma Willis host star-studded ceremony live from The O2, London. The show features performances from some of the biggest names in music including Robbie Williams, Emeli Sandé, Little Mix, Skepta, Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars.

Skepta and Little Mix lead the nominations with three each.

David Bowie receives two posthumous nominations in British Male Solo Artist and Mastercard Album of the Year with Leonard Cohen receiving his first BRIT Award nomination in International Male Solo Artist Two nominations for The 1975, Kano, Michael Kiwanuka, Calvin Harris, James Arthur, Clean Bandit, Jonas Blue, Tinie Tempah and Coldplay. Sisters Beyoncé and Solange go head to head in International Female Solo Artist category 2017 will celebrate the Awards 37th show since its debut year in 1977 (which was followed by a short break of a couple of years). The BRIT Awards have established themselves as a global music institution that annually celebrates UK chart and commercial successes. Last year (2016) The BRITs celebrated an incredible night in British music with Adele picking up four Awards as well as giving a show stopping performance. The Awards raised an incredible £265k for Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and The BRIT Trust from live performance downloads and streams from the ceremony.

The BRIT Awards annually raises funds for The BRIT Trust charity, whose main beneficiaries are the BRIT School for Performing Arts & Technology, Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy and other selected charities. To date, over £16.8million has been raised for The BRIT Trust charity.

A new documentary for award-winning international current affairs strand This World explores the discrimination and persecution of people with albinism in Tanzania and Malawi, East Africa.

In Born Too White, NHS doctor Oscar Duke (24 Hours in A&E), who himself has albinism, embarks on a personal journey to discover what life is like for people who share his condition in these countries.

Oscar struggled with the visual impairment albinism causes and has taken a long time to come to terms with his condition, but feels he has never really suffered from serious discrimination. In contrast, the stigma that surrounds people with albinism has been greatly ingrained within some African societies for many generations.

In Tanzania, home to among the highest proportion of people living with albinism in the world, they are vulnerable not only to bigotry but also mutilation and murder. In the last ten years alone there have been 170 attacks on people with albinism in Tanzania, 70 of which were fatal.

Many are killed for their body parts, which are believed to have magical powers.

Born Too White explores why these terrible crimes are taking place and who is responsible. Oscar meets young people with albinism facing the brunt of this discrimination: from a 15 year-old boy who was brutally attacked, to children placed in a secure camp. As he digs deeper into the culture of the places he visits, he speaks to a traditional healer, to the people who hold prejudiced views towards albinism and those responsible for attacks, including a man who admits to having murdered a person with albinism for money.

It will be open from 26th January to 25th February, inclusive, and can be visited from Monday to Friday from 9:30am-1pm and 4pm - 7pm and on Saturdays from 10am to 1pm Mandala is a masculine word used in Buddhism as a type of representation of the universe.

At the opening of this exhibition that is organized by the Department of Culture will be present the artist herself accompanied by the Councilor for Culture, María José García.

AFTER a windy start, the sun shone for our fun-day at the refuge. To the delight of our dogs, many of our volunteers and supporters arrived for an afternoon of fun, starting with a stroll to the beach, followed by lots of attention and cuddles.

Many of the dogs experienced their first attempts at agility, and they took to it with ease - I’m sure there are a few budding professionals

among them!

They retired to their kennels that evening knowing what love and care humans can offer. A

great day was had by dogs and humans alike, and we would like to say a special thank-you to everyone who came and supported our event, and for making such a difference to the dogs’ lives.

We always welcome people who would like to walk our dogs during our opening times.

Dear Editor, I wish to nominate myself as the minister of entertainment, drink, food, and artists’ employment. I wish to denounce the closing of so many bars and entertainment venues by the police, which is ruining lives of visitors to the Canary Islands, with claims of noise caused by music and loud laughter and applause, causing unemployment of staff and professional entertainers, while failing to resolve Island crimes.

The bars are charged for music licences and fined for doing a good job for everyone, incurring high expenses for opening and running their premises, and turning a fun island into a miserable island with nowhere for locals and holiday-makers to go.

This is the reason for the reduction of tourists visiting the islands, destroying the turn-over and benefits for all, causing unemployment.

I have supported the islands since childhood, and now, at 84 years old, I have been retired here in Tenerife since 1984, having run my business from Covent Garden market for the previous 42 years.

I was involved in business with every exporter in The Canary Islands since WW2 began, in 1939.

Yet we were forced to close business in 1994 as the supermarkets took over the fruit and veg trade, contrary to the government monopolies commission. And 90% of wholesale market traders closed their businesses for good as it was no longer profitable.

I opened a bar/nightclub in Tenerife in 1995 for two years and lost £48,000, the only failure I have ever had in my life, so I can speak from personal experience. I still love the islands and look forward to you doing something for the good of your beautiful island instead of destroying it.

I am a 100% disabled veteran of the Korean War, which did not stop me winning the “Potato War” in 1966. I imported 36,000 tons of Cyprus potatoes and Canarian potatoes through Gerald Navardo, who was food minister in the government at the time, and he backed me up for stopping the importation of 50,000 tons of Egyptian potatoes for not complying with British Import regs.

If nothing is done to compensate the proprietors of this industry, you will have to open the bars yourself and suffer the losses of money and wealth to the islands, and misery for all concerned.

Olive oil is key to good cooking... says expert A NEW Malaga cooking school is rustling up its own recipe for promoting extra virgin olive oil.

The Extra Virgin Olive Oil International Cooking Academy (ICA), based in Benalmadena, will teach cooking and classes about the science behind the oil.

The first seminars and workshops, conducted in Spanish and English, began last month.

School founder Jose Antonio Amerigo said: “We are going to teach cooking to the cooks.”

He conceived the project, aimed at kitchen professionals, because, he said, use of the product too often goes no further than salad dressing.

You’ll fall for artichokes THE prime artichoke season is now here, which means vegetarians will be on the look-out for the thistle-related plants.

These knobbly-green flower buds have been a Mediterranean favourite for centuries and could well have originated in Andalucía.

Despite their long history, artichokes have often been described as ugly and undesirable.

Yet Greek mythology has it that they were created when the god Zeus became jealous of the beautiful goddess Cynara and hit her with a thunderbolt … turning her into an artichoke!

They were thought to enhance sexual prowess and were reserved for men exclusively. And in 16th century Europe, a woman could cause great scandal by daring to eat an artichoke.

In these heady days of female emancipation,

however, the artichoke’s culinary delights (and secondary effects) are available for all to enjoy.

From the 16th century to the end of the 20th century, the French were growing artichokes in Paris, even elevating them to gourmet status. But, like many uncommon vegetables of that time, artichokes were so costly that only the wealthy aristocracy could afford them.

And when farmers in Italy, Greece and Spain began to grow artichokes in large quantities, the vegetable lost status in France and cultivation began to diminish. But

not so in Spain, where they are still extremely popular.

The plants can be grown at home, thriving in deep, well-fertilised, and well-drained soils,which provide plenty of room for root development. And they can be grown as annuals in areas that experience freezing temperatures, which, obviously, does not apply to Tenerife.

Dip each petal into melted butter or olive oil, then pull it through your teeth to remove the soft flesh.

When all the petals have been removed, spoon out and discard the fuzzy centre at the base.

The bottom, or heart, is the best bit and should be tender and moist: cut into slices, dip them into the sauce … and you will enjoy!

British veg costs too ‘aggressive’

PRODUCERS in Spain have caned the British press over its coverage of the vegetable shortage by Spanish producers.

Several articles in the media there accused Spain of storing the vegetables and salad produce, so they can sell them later at a higher price.

Fernando Gomez, head of the Association of Fruit and Vegetable Producers and Exporters of Murcia (Proexport), has hit back at this criticism, labelling it “totally false”.

He pointed to numerous photographs of empty shelves in British supermarkets, compared with those in Spain, which are overflowing with lettuce.

Gomez said the British

shelves were marked with a “shameful” price tag, while in Spain, the same product was on sale for twice the price, at 1.15 euros..

“If they don’t have lettuces, it’s because they don’t want to buy them” he said.

The Association chief added that Spanish growers could not be”‘secretly storing” lettuces, because they are perishable good and don’t last in storage.

According to Gomez, the “aggressive•” pricing of British supermarkets is to blame for the shortage, and not Spanish producers.

Irish writer’s bolster for Tenerife tourism TENERIFE’S main inbound tourism market generated media coverage valued at almost 12m euros in 2016, and the British and Irish media published more than 330 articles about the island last year.

They included two reports

by Irish travel journalist Isabel Conway, written after she took part in the Tenerife Walking Festival. As a result, she was voted Journalist of the Year in the category for reports on Spain in the last edition of the Travel Extra awards,.

They were published in the Irish Examiner and Sunday Business Post, after the Press trip, organised by Tenerife Tourism, whose chief, Alberto Bernabé said: “It is excellent news that a report about the Walking Festival has been valued so positively.

“This reinforces the importance of an event that has already become a reference in Europe.”

Bernabé added: “The media impact in the UK and Ireland contributes to reinforcing Tenerife’s presence in that market, as well as highlighting the island

as a premier destination for British visitors.”

Last year, a total of 30 journalists from the UK and Ireland visited Tenerife on Press, family and blog trips, co-ordinated by Tenerife Tourism (Turismo de Tenerife).

They generated media coverage worth nearly five million euros, with a potential audience of around 100 million (according to the circulation and print run figures), and more than 100 articles in the media.

Outstanding coverage was featured in publications such as The Daily Telegraph, The Times, Condé Nast Traveler and Cosmopolitan.

Eighty members of the British Guild of Travel Writers, who held their AGM in Tenerife in January 2016, deserve a special mention.

This important group visit generated over 60 articles, including magazines, travel blogs and a large number of regional and local newspapers in the UK, valued at a million euros, and reaching a potential audience of the same number.

In addition to trips by travel journalists, more than 20 Press releases were sent to the British and Irish media in 2016.

They were promoting

both the island’s new developments, such as the motor-racing track, hotels, etc, and a wide variety of events and festivals.

They included the Santa Cruz Carnaval, the Mueca

(international street art festival) and Tenerife Bluetrail mountain race, to strengthen the island’s presence in its main market.

In other words, Britain, the main market for incoming

Tenerife tourists.

And the proof really was in the pudding because last year, 2,049,093 Britons took their holidays on the Island, which was a 16.1% increase on 2015.

BA’s sunshine bonus

BRITISH AIRWAYS will start flying from Birmingham and Bristol airports again, with four summer-only routes to Spain and Italy.

The airline last flew from the airports in 2007, when the regional airline business was sold to Flybe.

From May, BA will begin direct flights to Malaga, Ibiza and Palma, and to Italian city Florence.

Basic, each-way fares from Birmingham to Ibiza start from £45 and to Florence, Malaga and Palma from £4 more.

The new return flights from both airports will operate on one weekend day only, using 98-seat Embraer 190 jet aircraft.

“We are very excited to be returning to Birmingham with four popular routes,”

said Luke Hayhoe, British Airways’ general manager, commercial and customer.

“Customers can again enjoy competitively-priced flights to the sun, direct from their doorstep with BA, to those destinations they tell us they want to fly to.”

David Winstanley, Birmingham Airport’s chief operating officer, said: ‘Having BA return here is great news for the airport,

and also for the Midlands region. We are confident this is the beginning of a longterm growth plan with the airline.”

And Robert Sinclair, Bristol Airport’s chief executive officer, added: ‘These additional flights offer passengers in the South West and Wales region a further choice of scheduled flights for the summer season.”

THERE comes a time, in many a woman’s life, that fighting those white hairs becomes a losing battle.

Unless you want to be in the salon every week or two, then changing that once-dark hair may not just be an option - it may be a necessity.

WHATEVER your particular interior- desi g n taste, the kitchen is one area where a sleek, shiny, modern look usually works.

No-one wants to admit that their natural colour doesn’t suit them any more. Opting for a lighter tone may bring thoughts of dread to a woman, but when you lose the colour in your

hair, you also lose the tone in your skin.

That once-deep brown can now drain you, and give your skin a sallow look.

Lifting the colour a few shades, and adding in lighter pieces, can take away the harsh regrowth and make your colour last so much longer.

There’s nothing worse than seeing a white line

on darker-coloured hair.

If you can’t keep up to it, then hesitate about having it in the first place.

It’s not good to repeatedly colour your hair, and that’s why blending in tones and lifting the depth will help so much with the overall colour.

So don’t be stuck with those roots waving at you, calling for attention. Consult your salon to say goodbye to the trauma of constant regrowth, and see what a difference just going a few shades lighter can make to your hair.

In many Tenerife properties, the kitchen is open-plan, combined with a dining area, if not the lounge as well.

Therefore, the style of your kitchen has more impact on your overall, interior design than might be the case in the UK. Traditionally, most properties built over 10 years ago would have been fitted with a pine kitchen and granite work surfaces.

Gonna make you sweat!

MAYBE half of you guys made New Year resolutions to “get fit” or “lose weight”, but how many of you are still devoted to what you promised yourselves?

Getting fit and attending a gym is serious stuff, and you need the right mindset to reap any benefits.

Looking the part is all part-and-parcel of being serious about changing your lifestyle and body.

Choosing the

appropriate gym gear, according to what you want to achieve, is crucial. Just throwing on any old clothes isn’t going to give you self confidence, is it?

Co-ordinating what you wear, albeit slightly, is the best look to go for.

You’re not in a team; just give a little thought to what you’re wearing.

Clothes that are too

tight-fitting will show off those areas that you’re trying to get rid of. Change your gym clothes daily, and try not to always wear the same trainers, either.

Looking good in the gym goes with smelling good, too. Keep your casual clothes as that, and don’t combine the two. Never seriously train in day-wear.

If you look good in the gym you’re going to perform better, too.

Take pride in your image, even while working up a sweat.

This doesn’t mean spending a fortune - a basic collection will last for years.

And many of them have lasted to this day, so they have done their job!

But today’s tendency is towards finishes that are part of your overall property, and on show at all times.

It adds style to your home, and conveys the idea that this space is not just the place where you cook your food!

Sleek, shiny, worksurfaces, in materials such as siltstone or, better still, Neolith, can add glamour, while still being practical and long-lasting.

New gloss-finish doors are easy to keep clean and look excellent.

Integrated appliances will hide away the working parts of the kitchen into a smooth, modern area, and good planning of the cupboard areas means there is no clutter on display.

And do invest in a stylish set of taps because they will be on show.

If your property is small, go for pale and neutral colours in the kitchen area, such as white, cream,

light grey or beige, to make the room look bigger.

Use small pops of colour to tone the kitchen with the rest of the space, such as coloured tiles or glass for the splash-back, or some of the equipment, such as a coloured kettle.

Incorporating the dining area into the kitchen can free up a lot more space in openplan property, and also make even the smallest kitchen a sociable area.

If your property is larger, you can play with different finishes and colours in your kitchen: make it look grand!

If it’s time to update your kitchen, do it the right way! Don’t just work with the existing lay-out, but look at ways to use all the space wisely.

Choose lasting and decorative materials, and make the kitchen an integrated part of your property design, and not just an afterthought.

What a bruiser!

By Val Sainsbury WE all notice bruises on our bodies from time to time, and there are several reasons why we could bruise easily.

As you get older, your skin loses some of the protective, fatty layer that provides cushioning against bumps and falls.

Your skin also becomes thinner, while the production of collagen slows. This means that it generally takes much less force to cause a bruise than it did when you were younger.

The reason why most people bruise is that their capillaries are too fragile and, essentially, are easily torn. One of

the best ways to ensure that your capillaries remain strong and flexible is to make sure you have an excellent source of bioflavonoids in your diet.

Excellent dietary sources of bioflavonoids include dark-coloured berries, dark, leafy greens, garlic and onions.

Typically, a wellrounded diet, with plenty of organic vegetables and some fruits, will be more than sufficient to provide all the micro-nutrients you need to prevent bruising from all but the most severe traumas.

Here are some other reasons why we do bruise: Purpuric dermatosis This vascular condition, more common in the elderly, causes thousands of tiny bruises, often on your shins, which may have the appearance of cayenne pepper from

afar. The bruises are the result of blood leaking out of small capillaries.

Blood disorders Haemophilia and leukaemia can cause unexplained bruising, often because your blood fails to clot properly. If you have severe and frequent, unexplained bruising, it’s a good idea to see a doctor to rule out such disorders, especially if it seems to come on suddenly.

Diabetes People with diabetes may develop dark,

skin discolourations, often in areas where skin touches other skin frequently. These discolourations may be mistaken for bruises, but they are actually down to underlying insulin resistance.

Excessive straining while you exercise Putting your muscles under excessive strain, which might occur during heavy weight lifting, can cause blood vessels to burst and lead to bruising.

Microscopic tears in

Doctors involved in huge hospital fraud A MAMMOTH scam, concerning the theft of more than 250,000 euros from the Andalucian Health Service, has led to the arrest of 22 people in Cadiz.

That includes present and former senior figures, and some doctors from the Puerto Real and Puerta del

Mar de Cadiz Hospitals.

They are all accused of embezzlement of public funds, fraud, falsification of documents and membership of a criminal group.

The accused were said to have been entering false orders for prosthetics and other expensive pieces of medical equipment, and then selling them on to third parties.

At the same time, those

in need of the items were denied access to them during the scam, which ran from 2012 to 2014.

In one case an individual who, supposedly, received one item but didn’t, eventually suffered an amputation which may have been unnecessary had he been treated properly in the first place.

In total, records suggest that illegal documentation was

entered for no fewer than 125 actions, which resulted in the fraud.

And there were some for which all computer records had been destroyed.

Since the crimes were discovered, the authorities estimate that the saving has been far more than the amounts defrauded, and that the right patients are being treated according to their needs.

Pale skin Pale skin doesn’t make you more prone to bruising, but it does make any bruises you do get more visible than they would be on someone with darker skin.

Sun damage While your body needs regular sun exposure to produce vitamin D (and get a host of additional benefits), excessive sun exposure, especially the type that leads to burning, can cause your skin to lose its pliability and resilience. This, in turn, makes bruising easier and more noticeable.

So be careful here in Tenerife because the sun can be searing, without you noticing, especially on the beach.

Brad Chermside Frozen melts their hearts WHEN a very sick little girl arrived too late to see her favourite part of the show, the cast of The Sound of Musicals knew there was only one thing that would mend her broken heart.

And that was to put on a special performance of the show’s “Frozen” section she had missed, especially for her and her family, after the audience had left.

Cast-member Brad Chermside recalled: “Both the family and the cast were streaming with tears, and that’s what motivates me to keep doing this job.”

Brad, born in the Essex town of Basildon, came to Tenerife in January 2012. “I’d been doing six-month, summer seasons in Menorca and Cyprus with my Robbie Williams tribute act,” said the 39-year-old, “and I lived at a friend’s place in Barcelona during the winter months.

“But I wanted to work somewhere all year round. On a professional level, I love Tenerife. It couldn’t have gone any better, and it’s been really fantastic.

“I’ve been part of The Sound of Musicals for the last 2½ years, and I do my tribute act at weekends.

“I won the Best Newcomer award at the 2012 TEAs, and the award for the Best Tribute Show two years later. I also formed the group Riffs and Quiffs, with singer Pip Brown, and we won the Best Group award at the 2013 TEAs.” Brad added: “After school, I studied for two years at Luton University to be a PE teacher. I completed my final year at university in Florida, and graduated from there with a First-Class Honours degree.

“I always found my Basildon teachers to be inspirational, and I wanted to do the same for other kids. They were a good influence on me.”

Brad had planned to study for an additional year, for his Post Graduate Certificate in Education, but decided to take 12 months out to earn some money instead!

“I came back to the UK, and started working in Hertfordshire for The Prince’s Trust,” he said.

“I was a team leader on personal-development programmes for those aged 16-25, and guided them to their first qualifications.

“I’d always written lyrics and strummed a guitar just as a hobby, and I put an ad on a website for musical recording studios. Three guys approached me needing a singer for their rock band, Levanter.

“So, at the age of 24, I started singing with them at weekends, in and around London. I’d never sung before in my life! We were together for about five years. I was still working in education, but decided I didn’t want to be a full-time teacher.

“I left The Prince’s Trust after 14 months, and I still get messages from the people I helped.

“After that, I started my own company as a qualified UEFA level-B football coach,” said the avid West Ham supporter. “The next step up would have been working in a professional club.

“I was coaching football in schools, and the business went really well. But I didn’t want to carry on, so I closed it down. I became a supply PE teacher on long-term contracts, and, all the while, I was still in the group.

“Eventually, I taught English in

Barcelona, and PE in a private American school there. Then, through a casting website, I was offered singing work in Cyprus.”

He was supposed to have auditioned as a rock singer, but was offered the chance to do a Robbie Williams tribute act instead.

“I really didn’t want to do that,” he said, “but they twisted my arm!

So I borrowed Robbie’s Greatest Hits CD from the library, learned 20 songs and the show went really well.”

But, after moving between Cyprus, Minorca and Barcelona every few months, Brad was fed up with all the travelling.

“I came over here on holiday to check it out, and then went back to Barcelona,” he said. “I returned a year later for a little trial, and then came here fulltime in 2012.

“Everyone at The Sound of Musicals gets on really well, and I’ve never laughed so much. Also, the Showtime staff are a massive part of the whole experience for the guests, and we couldn’t do it without them.

“Both my jobs balance and complement each other, and I never get bored. But, as a kid, my dream was to be footballer.

“As a 16-year-old, I trained with Leyton Orient, and was coached by ex-Manchester United goalkeeper Chris Turner.

“Ability-wise, I probably could have made it, but I didn’t have the right guidance. And, anyway, my passion for music was always there, burning throughout.”

July 2016 saw Brad taking part in the New York City Triathlon which consisted of a 1½-mile swim in the Hudson River, a 40km bike ride along Manhat-

tan’s W e s t Side Highway, and a 10km run through Central Park.

He raised 650 euros for a lady who had lost her home in last year’s tragic building collapse in Los Cristianos.

Another string to Brad’s bow is the recent launching of his podcast website www. frontcovershow. com where listeners can hear him chatting with global cabaret entertainers.

He added: “But now my dream is to become an author, and to publish the book I’m writing.

“I believe that performing is a lot more important than it appears to be, and not just because the audience will spend an evening as a diversion from everyday life.

“Before every performance of The Sound of Musicals I say to the guys: ‘Come on, let’s go and change lives tonight.’”

And Brad’s motto for life? “Head down and keep pedalling!”

Gaffers Hammered!

IT was semi-final week in the PJ Electrical and Building Services Cup and Plate competitions, and we had THE shock of the season!

Gaffers A, who have already sewn up the Division One title, were chasing a League and Cup double. Their opponents were James Hammers C, still battling it out for the Second Division title. Nobody gave the Hammers a chance against a team who were unbeaten all season. And when Gaffers A roared into a 3-1 lead, the writing was on the cards. Or was it?

Tony beat Bangkok Kev in the opening frame of session two, but, surely, that was just a consolation frame for Hammers C? Maybe it wasn’t because James took a great scalp in beating Neil. This inspired Macaroni and Ken H, who also won. All of a sudden, Hammers C led 5-3. A shocked Gaffers rallied as Kev beat James to draw closer.

But Macaroni was inspired and Neil was beaten twice in a night, guaranteeing Hammers C a play-off frame.

Ken H then completed an outstanding performance by 7-balling Top Sixty Dave to take his third game of the night, which left David beating Goliath, and Tenerife Hammers C were in the Cup Final.

The other semi-final, contested by Palms Elite and Exiles A, promised to be close. Early frames were traded and neither team wanted to concede anything.

As the frames were ticked off, Palms Elite had a breakthrough and opened a slender lead, leaving Exiles A with it all to do. But, try as they might, they couldn’t overturn the advantage and Palms Elite held

their nerve to remain in the trophy hunt!

The Plate’s first semifinal was between Terrace Roosters and Phoenix Potters. The former were seeking a final appearance after a dismal season, and the latter still in with a chance of runners-up spot in Division One. Roosters in decent form of late, were short on players, which enabled Potters to storm into the lead, taking the first four frames.

Roosters pulled a frame back, but it just wasn’t their night as the Potters took the next three in quick succession, Pod rolling in the winning black to put Roosters back to their relegation battle, with no silver in sight.

The second semi-final featured Treehouse against Dreamers and, on paper at least, this looked a real tough game. And so it proved because there was nothing between the two sides in the first session, leaving the match poised at 2-2.

Treehouse A took the first frame of the second session for a slight lead, and, despite good league form, Dreamers A then collapsed as their opponents took the next three frames to be 6-2 ahead.

Dreamers A rallied and took frame nine, but that was as far as they got. Treehouse A won the next game to give them the seven frames they required to win.

The PJ Electrical & Building Services Cup and Plate finals will be held on Tuesday, 21st March 21st at the Terrace Bar, on Amarilla Golf, with an 8.30pm start.

The Cup Final line-up is James Hammers C v Palms Elite and the Plate Final, Treehouse A v Phoenix Potters.

Everyone is welcome to come along and watch what promises to be an excellent night of pool.

from the home side, Paul having one eye on the clock through work commitments!

It was the first time Palms A had led, and that advantage increased when Chris beat Pete to put a point on the board.

And JT had a chance to wrap up the issue by winning his third frame of the night, against Mal, who was also after his hattrick. Mal was on the black first, but when he hit it too hard and rattled it, JT was in.

But he hit an awful shot that allowed Mal back to the table, and this time he made sure, giving Bantams a chance to draw.

This left Roscoe against Adi, fellowcaptains, colleagues and friends!

Both played some superb pool, but Roscoe was in the driving seat, taking his last two balls in style but snookering himself on the black.

But he didn’t give a foul away and Adi was back at the table. He sunk two of his final colours, but rattled the third.

Now Roscoe was on the black and he took it with confidence, potting it in the middle bag. But he gave it too much juice and the white cannoned off the top cushion and ended in the bottom bag!

It was his third loss of the night and the game finished all-

catch-up league games in Division One and Division Two on Tuesday. In the top division, Palms A, chasing runners-up spot, had a home game against Terrace Bantams.

The away side struck first, with Paul beating Dave, which was followed by a frame for

the home side as JT beat Pete. This pattern continued through the first eight frames, to leave the score tied at 4-4.

In Division Two, there was a top-table clash between Yates Bar and Bluebell B, two teams still in the title race.

Away team Bluebell B struck first as Craig and Keith took the opening frames. But this served to wake up Yates Bar, who put their foot down and won the next six frames.

The points looked secure, but Bluebell B do not know when they are beaten. Dougie and Mal pulled them closer with the first two frames of the final session, and the comeback was on.

However, Lee had a chance to wrap things up for Yates Bar, only to foul on the black.

This allowed Craig back on the table with two shots, and he didn’t waste them. It was now 6-5 and Yates Bar were rattled.

It was down to Biggie against Grant, and a situation the latter was used to. Biggie was under pressure and it showed as he struggled to get into the game.

Grant seized on this and finished off the Bluebell B comeback, grabbing what looked an unlikely point earlier on.

Next week will be interesting because these two go head-tohead again. Another point apiece will not suit either side.

Highest-handicap heaven!

THE marvellous thing about Canarian Weekly’s Team Handicap competition is the chance it offers weaker teams to get their hands on a nice bit of silverware.

And with four Division 2 teams in the semi-

finals, it seemed a good bet that at least one of them would get through.

Sadly, it was not to be, and, having had reports back from all concerned, it seemed that the dreaded “double trouble” haunted our gallant losers.

That was certainly so at Phoenix Bar, where Legends started their legs with a 352-point

There, they will meet Palms Sports bar, who were pushed all the way by Division 2 opponents Clouseaus.

But it just wasn’t to be for the lower-league team, despite their valiant effort.

Illegal Premier football provider blown offside POLICE have closed down an internet service provider, which has been streaming hundreds of online, pay-per-view channels illegally, some showing Premier League matches.

The company was being run from the UK by two Britons, who, said police, were using “sophisticated videorecording devices”.

As soon as officers entered the facility, the owners attempted to remotely-destroy evidence, but were unsuccessful.

An undercover FA representative discovered that the provider sold its devices at a fraction of the retail cost from a Malaga shopping centre.

National Police officials have posted a video of the raid on Twitter, stressing that they have teamed up with Premier League bosses to crack down on illegal streaming.

The Spanish Police said in the post: “One goal against piracy!

Spanish Police and Premier League join forces to raid a local ISP in Malaga, offering

unauthorised matches.”

The Police were informed by an Irdeto (digital platform security) investigator of Y Internet’s unlawful actions, through which thousands of homes and businesses across the UK and Spain had been streaming football matches illegally. .

Kevin Plumb, Premier League Director of Legal Services, said: “The raids conducted by the Spanish authorities, supported in this case

by Irdeto’s expertise, are a positive example of law-enforcement taking piracy and IP infringement seriously.

“This approach is essential for organisations like the Premier League, and other creative industries, because our model is predicated on the ability to market and sell rights, and protect intellectual property.”

He added: “It is because of this that clubs can invest in star players and managers, and world-class stadiums … the very things fans enjoy about our competition.”

Neighbours breach fortress Iberostar Tenerife 60 Gran Canaria 70

OF all the teams to lose to…

Iberostar Tenerife´s six-game winning streak was ended at home by island neighbours Gran Canaria.

Coach Txus Vidorreta was critical of the referee, but his side were found wanting at key stages, especially leaking 17 points without reply at the end of the second quarter.

Over 5,000 fans crammed into the La Laguna stadium and Tenerife shaded the first quarter 21-17. But that was soon eroded by that dreadful second period, which put the visitors 40-33 up at the halfway point.

The remainder of the game was tighter, with 11-15 and 16-15 quarters ensuring the surprise victory.

Home top scorers were Davin White, Fran Vazquez, and Aaron Doornekamp,

all with 12 points. But Gran Canaria had the dominant player in Kyle Kuric, who led his side with 15 points.

The only consolation for Tenerife was that they stayed in second place in the Liga Endesa, with Gran Canaria a few places below.

Following the game, latest signing Taqwa Pinero, from the US, parted company with the club after failing to make any impression after joining from the Angolan league a month ago.

On the plus side, inspirational captain Nico Richotti is finally fit again and ready to hit the court.

VA L L A D O L I D , never a happy hunting ground, was seen as a tricky test for Tenerife, who are in a rich vein of form.

But they kept their nerve and came back with another valuable point, and these impressive stats keep stacking up,.

They are unbeaten this year, and that’s now 483 minutes and five games without conceding a goal. And though they dropped one place in the league, they still hold a promotion playoff spot.

It was a pig of a week leading up to the game for coach Pep Marti, with injuries, illness, and wild speculation about Japanese signing Gaku Shibasaki’s debut.

Sadly, the highprofile new boy was hotel-bound with a stomach complaint, but his team-mates’ performance must have felt like a box of Rennies to cheer up his bewildering arrival.

The pre-weekend worries must have concentrated the mind of the coach.

Complacency, loss of form and lack of match-fitness are all possible obstacles on the horizon, so Pep

Marti made a few wise adjustments.

Omar, given a rare start in place of out-of-sorts Suso, is a proud little fighter who always responds well when people start to doubt him.

The game again showcased Tenerife’s defensive qualities and pushed keeper Dani Hernandez a few more steps up the hero ladder.

Amath toyed with the hosts early on, his check and little dragback of the ball leaving two defenders looking like novices, only for him to shoot wide.

Valladolid had some good moves, however, and a neat, looping ball into the box could have caught out a mere

mortal. But Dani tipped it away with barely a clear sight of it. Another long shot later in the first half was met with a two-handed block.

Valladolid went close in the second half with one attempt headed wide, while Suso came off the bench for Aaron after 70 minutes.

The home side were down to 10 men for the final 13 minutes after Villar was given a straight red for a sneaky punch, well-spotted by the linesman.

But Tenerife, who just can’t seem to punish short-handed teams, saw out the game without any serious threat to the opponents’ goal, despite late changes as Tyronne replaced Omar and

Jouini took over from Alberto.

The latter’s earlier booking rules him out for the home game against Almeria tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm.

Jouini, who has been poor for Tenerife, is most fans’ last choice to play up front. But the coach knows he needs to keep all the squad motivated for the challenge ahead.

TRAVELLING between the Canary Islands was a bit hitand-miss during last weekend’s storms. But CD Marino were just glad to see their game in Gran Canaria go ahead.

They were even happier when they brought back a point from Arucas, and what a perfect start!

New signing Bamba made his debut from the bench after 14 minutes, and it was plain-sailing up to half-time, with Daylo, for Arucas, and Marino’s Saul both having half-chances.

There were high hopes of a rare away win as the game moved towards the end. But a penalty, given for a Mendy handball, enabled the home side to level after 84 minutes.

This Sunday, Marino welcome Lanzarote to Playa de Las Americas for a noon kick-off.
