THE ongoing controversy about whether to legalise cannabis for medicinal purposes will be debated by the Spanish Parliament for the first time. It follows centre-right party Ciudadanos’ legislative proposal, which is a legal tool used by MPs to press for specific action from government leaders. Although the Government isn’t obliged to take action, it serves as a voice for hot topics being debated in society. That it has been presented by the moderatelyconservative Ciudadanos means the issue is more likely to raise discussion in Parliament. The party, which sought advice from the Spanish Observatory for Medicinal Cannabis (cannabis oil), said several other European Union member States had already set the wheels in motion. These include Germany, Italy, Finland and the Czech Republic, as well as 26 States in the US, and worldwide countries such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, Uruguay, Chile and Colombia.

Government plans to debate legalising medicinal cannabis
The motion comes just days after a 75-year-old woman was arrested and then released without charges in San Sebastián after 14 marijuana plants were found in her flat. She explained that she mashed up the shrubs with surgical spirit and used the salve as a muscle-rub for herself and her husband to alleviate their aches and pains. The woman said she had seen this process on TV and had no idea cannabis was illegal. “I knew it was a drug, but I thought it was okay for therapeutic uses,” she added. She also grew other innocuous plants and herbs for medicinal use, including rosemary, which, according to a widely-used traditional pain remedy, is mashed with surgical spirit in the same
way as the pensioner did with cannabis. A legal loophole exists concerning marijuana use, and police are relatively unconcerned with members of the public who keep a small number of plants for personal consumption, provided the smell does not cause a nuisance and they are not on display from the street. But “dealing” is a criminal offence, and, if large numbers of plants are found on private property, an investigation is likely to be held. The Spanish Observatory for Medicinal Cannabis showed Ciudadanos scientific and medical evidence that the drug is a “powerful appetite stimulant”, which can be beneficial with certain health conditions. It is widely recognised that
the substance helps prevent nausea and vomiting, a frequent side-effect of cancer treatment. It also improves nerve pain and helps reduce spasticity (involuntary jerky, disjointed movements caused by lack of motor co-ordination), both of which are associated with multiple sclerosis and other degenerative, neurological illnesses. This latter benefit is even said to extend to epilepsy, having been known to combat toniclonic seizures. Spain’s PP-led Government
has always been against any kind of legalisation, or even decriminalisation of drugs. But Ciudadanos stresses that authorising cannabis for therapeutic use does not have mean relaxing rules covering its recreational consumption. Also, it points out, authorising cannabis for these ends means its content will be monitored stringently and safetytested, eliminating the risks patients now face when buying it off the street.
Police foil a terrorist attack by Moroccan GRAN Canaria’s National Police have arrested a 33-year-old Moroccan man, who was planning to carry out a terrorist attack, according to the Interior Ministry.
Investigators said he “constituted a potential threat to national security, having manifested his clear intention to carry out a terrorist attack of great scope and repercussion”. The Moroccan, living illegally in Spain, had been under investigation since 2012. He was considered potentially dangerous,
and had become more radical in a short time. The probe revealed that he had developed an extensive, social-media presence, publishing jihadist content supporting the Islamic terrorist group (DAESH). He had also shared violent videos, openly-approved terrorist attacks and even posed next to his wife and young son wearing clothes with emblems of the terrorist organisation, holding weapons. The man carried out all this activity online under pseudonyms to hide his identity from the Police. The investigation is still open, under the Central Courts supervision, supported by the National Intelligence Centre.
Rajoy has united front with France I M M I GR A T I O N , security at the EU border and economic growth should be the EU’s main priorities postBrexit, according to the leaders of Spain and France. The on-going relationship between the countries saw Mariano Rajoy (pictured right) and Françoise Hollande at the 25th
bilateral summit, staged in Malaga’s Pompidou Centre. Spanish PM Rajoy said: “It it time for those of us who believe in Europe to send a unified and strong message that we stand united, and push for integration now more than ever.” He further highlighted the need for a “fiscal union” to create a more competitive environment for European companies, which could lead to a unified tax scheme. And to improve security,
Spain and France are united in the belief that an EU defence fund should be set up. Hollande warned of “outside forces”, which would like to see Europe collapse, and said the EU must find its purpose to avoid destruction. The two leaders also signed agreements to share information concerning ETA, increased co-operation in the fight against drugs and mutual assistance in the case

Arona cop ‘involved’ in horror dog-fights Continued from Front The first began in the early hours of Saturday in the northern Güímar municipality, where several officers descended on a crowd watching the dogfights in the grounds of a rural house in Hoya de la Vieja, La Medida. They arrested some 20 people, 10 of whom were said to be the ringleaders, and those 10 appeared in the Güímar Court on Tuesday, where a magistrate detained four of them them without bail. The remaining six were told they could avoid being held by paying the bail fee (amount unknown). But all 10, accused of animal abuse committed within a criminal organisation, along with
drug-trafficking and illegal possession of a weapon, were actually transferred to Tenerife II prison in the early hours of Wednesday. And they have all been banned, as a precautionary measure, from carrying out trades related to animals. Among those under investigation, according to sources, is an Adeje Local Police officer, alleged to be
linked to a farm in Valle San Lorenzo, which was also raided over the weekend. In addition, there may be a vet or health professional among those held. Police believe that the large bust, along with the Arona affair, appears to have dismantled the horrific Tenerife network totally. Güímar’s raid involved several vehicles and a
At least 100 animals have been rescued By Sue Havenhand, Live Arico ONE of our volunteers was present at the Los Toscales finca last Sunday, where the atrocities had taken place. We were in attendance with Yahaira Thovar Melián, of ADEPAC (Asociación para la Defensa y Protección de los Animales en Canarias), which is co-ordinating the rescue and shelter of those animals which survived these unbelievable horrors. Tragically, many did not make it, and their bodies had to be removed. Within hours, we had seen truly-shocking videos which were not easy to watch. Aside from the fighting dogs, small-breed dogs had been stolen from their loving families, to be fed to pitbulls as bait and food. This has, particularly, rocked the
island’s pet-lovers. Now the task begins of cataloguing the surviving animals, scanning them for microchips and maybe, just maybe, some might be reunited with their owners. Between Guimar and Los Toscales, some 100 dogs were rescued and placed in various shelters and residences around the island. We at Live Arico have four of the animals, and once they have been assessed and treated, they will be needing homes. We are dedicating a benefit afternoon to the plight of these poor animals on Saturday, 11th March, at Amandas Bar, San Eugenio, from 2pm. Please come and support it if you can. The ADEPAC charity is appealing for towels, flea/
tick treatments, leads, collars and food for largebreed dogs. These items can be left at any of our three charity shops, as well as at Hospivet Sur, Las Chafiras, and La Camella’s Vet Clinic. If you have any doubts, call Sue on 629 388 102. Economic help is also required to get all these dogs treated and checked by vets. You can make a bank transfer to ADEPAC (account number ES03 2100 6719 0622 0009 1431). Also, its Paypal is adepac@ adepaccanarias.com please put RESCATE as the concept. Cash donations can be left in marked envelopes at any of the locations listed, and we will pass them on. Thank you in advance for any help you can give.
helicopter, and an officer was injured. One of the detainees was also hurt, having driven his car into a reservoir while trying to flee the scene. But he was rescued by sympathetic cops! The operation was, apparently, set up after various denuncias by local residents, who complained that dog-fights were being held in the property. And, according to other denuncias, small dogs used for “feeding” the fighters were stolen from surrounding areas. The rescued Güímar animals, many of them wounded because of the fights, were moved by police to a refuge in the South. Local Mayor Carmen Luisa Castro said she was unaware of illegal dog-fights in the municipality, although she knew that the National Police had arrested people at the rural property. She also confirmed that she had not been notified previously, and that Local Police were not involved in the operation.
Yet it’s not the first time illegal dog-fights have been staged in Güímar, an area which has been persecuted for many years through the Canary Islands Animal Protection Law. The ramifications of this raid led the Guardia Civil to a private farm/estate in Arona’s Los Toscales, Valle San Lorenzo, the following day. They found around 20 animals, used for dogfighting, and a further 10 dead dogs (pictured), which were in a pile on the property. Various animal shelters had sounded the alarm, via social media, regarding the goingson at this farm. With the Guardia Civil’s consent, the rescued dogs were removed from the farm and taken to various shelters. Along with the dogs, there were also dozens of hens, ducks, pheasants and roosters on the property, which were also rescued, albeit in a terrible condition.
Godfather’s network
crumbles A SPECIALIST from the Violent and Specialised Crime unit described the police officers’ conclusions about last weekend’s raid in Güímar. He revealed that they said: “It was as if it were a Spanish dog-fighting federation, but illegal of course, sending dogs around the world, for example in Saudi Arabia, Thailand or Italy, to tear each other apart.” And the first thing the officers explained was that the whole network’s epicentre was located thousands of kilometres
from Tenerife. The nowdismantled dog-fighting network’s “Godfather” lives in Madrid’s Torrejón de Ardoz region, and his criminal organisation has been busted by the National Police. During their weekend raids, a total of 40 people were arrested and detained, while 18 homes were searched in Madrid, Murcia, Alicante and Tenerife. And there are more suspects at large in mainland Spain, including some pursued by the Swedish authorities.

Community’s anger over building-collapse report SEVEN lives lost and 10 months on, reports from two expert constructors into the Los Cristianos building collapse of 14th April 2016, have angered the Community of 23 owners affected by the tragedy.
Their emotional pain and financial losses have been compounded by the reports’ accusations that the Community was partially to blame, because of deficiencies in maintaining the building. The main causes are pointed out as poor-grade concrete and construction in 1972, and reckless alterations to a Banesto Bank unit in 2003. This has baffled Community members because one of the new report’s experts didn’t mention the historic problems when he worked on a 2004 report, commissioned by the Community after cracks had been spotted. The loud, pounding work taking place in the same bank unit just days before the 2016 collapse hardly gets a mention. Edificio Julian Jose, in Calle Amalia Alayon, was built in 1972, and the new reports, commissioned by Arona Council, points the finger at poor-quality cement used in the construction, and modifications made to Local A by owners Banesto Bank in 2003. These included the removal of load-bearing walls. Carlos Andres Ruiz Perez, of Analasis Constructivos Atlante SLU, was the expert who produced the 2004 report. He also edited a new report in October 2016. The Community pointed out in a statement released this week that despite blaming the 2003 work, Atlante then went on to contradict itself by saying: “The building remained without showing any flaws until 2004.” Banesto Bank moved out of the local in 2006, although the company was still the owner, until selling it, early in 2016, to a private entrepreneur who was converting it into a perfume shop. Just after the collapse,
The main causes are pointed out as poor-grade concrete and construction in 1972, and reckless alterations to a Banesto Bank unit in 2003. many of those living in the block spoke of loud hammering noises coming from the former Banesto local, which could be felt in neighbouring properties just days before the tragedy. Both reports have focused more on the history of the building, rather than the heavy work going on hours before the tragedy. The first updates since the collapse, emerged from a hearing at an Arona court on 1st February in front of Sofia Elena Valdivia. The judicial process, which is continuing, can consider other input before reaching any final, legal conclusions. Two executives of Banesto Bank, and the entrepreneur doing the latest alterations, are under investigation. There has been no mention of inspections made on the properties each time new work began. And once investigators moved on to the site, when levelled and cleared, they found many surprises.
The second of the 1,000page reports is from the Instituto Tecnico de Materiales y Construcciones (INTEMAC). It mentions an attic, not in the original 1972 plans, but said “it was not the direct cause of the collapse”. However, INTEMAC went on to say: “The building’s design and construction was executed carelessly”. It concluded: “The most probable cause of the building’s collapse was due to a pillar failure due to poor concrete quality.” A July 2016 letter from the law firm advising the Community, warned that, in the Town Hall, “there was no building licence or request for the construction work, executed by the bank in 2014”. As the wait goes on for a final ruling, those affected by the loss of their homes and businesses still don´t know how and when they will be compensated for their material losses.

Operations hit by shortage of blood CANDELARIA hospital has had to reschedule at least six operations through lack of O+ blood, to ensure the patients’ safety. Sources says these operations were postponed and other ops, not requiring this type of blood, took their
place. The situation has occurred because there is a shortage of blood throughout the Canaries. Donations have decreased, but that is normal at this time of year. Along with the extraordinary number of surgeries in the last week, such as transplants or haemorrhages, they require a larger amount of blood compared
with other operations. Elsa Brito, responsible for the Promotion of the Canarian Blood Donation Institute, said this was the first crisis of the year - the last similar situation was at Christmas. She also pointed out that this problem happened every year around this time, because “we need to increase the blood bank reserves for all
Air steward caught after £35,000 theft
GRAN Canaria Police have arrested a Ryanair air steward, who attempted to fly to the Spanish mainland with more than £35,000,he was said to have stolen from a company safe.
The 20-year-old Argentine was stopped as he tried to board a flight to Seville shortly after the money disappeared. Guarda Civil officers held him after an airport scanner detected the cash in a suitcase he had checked on to the flight. They discovered a
sum of around 39,000 euros (£35,280) inside in several currencies, including pounds sterling, euros and Swedish krona, seized after the steward failed to tell them where the cash came, from before confessing all. It was later revealed that he had, allegedly, used a key to the safe to take the money after accessing his office using the security code in the early hours of the morning. He is thought to have been held as he tried to board the first domestic flight off the island to the Spanish mainland to make a quick getaway. The steward is believed to have been
remanded in custody after going before a judge in a private court hearing. A police statement said: “When officers asked the owner of the case to justify where the money came from, he finally admitted to working for an airline, and that the money came from a safe belonging to his company. A source added: “We believe he deliberately took the money in the early hours of the morning and picked an early flight to try to leave the island. “He wanted to be thousands of miles away from the Canaries on the Spanish mainland by the time the theft was discovered.”
blood types except AB positive and negative”. That is why she has appealed to people in the Canaries to donate blood. There are mobile units on several
islands, as well as hospitals who accept donations. Elsa Brito also confirmed that, as yet, no surgeries had been called off. But if
the situation persists without an increase to blood banks, it could lead to operations being cancelled. “That is what we do not want,” she added.

Fatal bus crash
A MAN died and two people were injured after their car collided with a bus in Fuerteventura. The incident occurred on the FV-1 motorway near La Hondura, in Puerto del Rosario. Paramedics rushed to the scene, but could only confirm the man’s death upon arrival, because of the severity of his wounds. They also attended to the two injured people. The man had a broken wrist and the woman a fractured knee, and both were taken to hospital for further treatment.
Protesters want more doors that open to refuges
THREE judges in Mallorca have found Princess Cristina not guilty of the criminal charges of she was accused by the now-disgraced Manos Limpios union.
But she must pay 265,000 euros in civil liability damages in the Nóos corruption scandal, following a sixmonth trial. Her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, who is also the King’s brother-in-law, was jailed for six years and three months and fined 512,000 euros for abuse of authority, misuse of public funds, administrative fraud, influence-peddling and two counts of tax fraud. But he was found not guilty
The Princess’ husband was condemned as one of the masterminds of a scheme which secured over 6m euros in no-bid contracts from regional governments of several other fraudulent crimes. Urdangarin was condemned as one of the masterminds of a scheme which secured over 6m euros in no-bid contracts from regional governments. It is the first time a member of the Spanish royal family has been brought to trial. Diego Torres, his business partner, was sentenced to eight years and fined 1,700,000 euros for his role in setting up the Noos Institute, a non-profit foundation which received
Government contracts, obtained without public tenders. Former Balearics premier Jaume Matas was given three years and eight months for fraud and unlawful decisions, having issued instructions to hire the Noos Institute. A Royal Household spokesperson, who confirmed that the King “respected the independence of the Spanish judiciary”, said there was no other comment from His Majesty.
AROUND 160,000 people have marched through the streets of Barcelona, demanding that Spain takes in more refugees from wartorn countries such as Syria.
They held banners and signs, in Catalan, with slogans saying “Enough excuses! Take them in now!” and “No more deaths, open the borders!” The Spanish Government pledged in 2015 to take in more than 17,000 refugees within two years, comprising just under 16,000 from camps in Italy and Greece, plus 1,500 from Turkey and Libya. Since then, however, Spain has admitted just 1,100 refugees. Barcelona Mayor Ada Colau, who joined the march, said in a statement: “It is very important for Barcelona to be a capital of hope in an uncertain Europe, where xenophobia is on the rise.”

Pollution is more than hot air in Spain SPAIN has been sent a final warning to comply with EU air pollution standards, and it could face heavy fines if it refuses to pay heed to the Commission.
If Spain does not show the ruling body how it intends to comply with EU law within two months, a court hearing, empowered to impose heavy fines, could begin later this year. There are three “airquality zones” which exceed the NO2 limits in the country: one in Madrid and two in Barcelona. And, according to a report published by the European Environment Agency, poor air-quality is believed to be the cause of an estimated 30,000 deaths a year in Spain alone, Britain has also been issued a final warning for 16 air-quality zones exceeding the pollution limits, among which are London, Birmingham and Leeds.

Once inside, police found the 68-year old British husband dead in bed, with his wife still cuddling him. The woman had vital, but weak, signs, so they began reviving her until paramedics arrived and took her to hospital. The husband’s body was taken to the Legal Medicine institute for an autopsy, although natural causes were suspected and he could have been dead for 24 hours.

NEWS IN BRIEF Live shows cheaper
TICKETS for live theatre, concert and dance events in Spain will be cheaper this year, thanks to a Government reduction in VAT (IVA), which will drop from 21% to 10%. The drop in tax income will cost the country around 200m euros annually. But Culture Minister Inigo Mendez de Vigo said: “The tax break will not include cinema tickets, which will retain 21% VAT (IVA) until the state is on track with the deficit.” Until this revelation, Spain had the fourth-highest rate of VAT on cultural performances in the EU.
Old boy murders wife
A BRITISH pensioner is believed to have murdered his wife before attempting to commit suicide in an Alicante nursing home.
The 86-year-old, allegedly, stabbed his partner in what police believe to be a case of domestic violence. The couple lived together in the Orpea nursing home in Campello, where police interviewed the husband. He had self-inflicted “superficial wounds”, and they transferred him to hospital for treatment.

Students keen to be on right track A TEAM of Spanish university students will this summer present their prototype of a train, capable of travelling up to 1,000km/h, in the next phase of the Hyperloop Pod Competition.
The aim of the competition, dreamed up by billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, co-founder of the Tesla electric car company, is to create a long-distance, high-speed, transportation system, similar to a landbased space rocket. Five students from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (UPV) began work on their project more than a year ago and now face opposition from 30 rival teams. Their plan is to present the train at the final Hyperloop trials, to be held at Musk’s SpaceX headquarters in Los Angeles this summer. Musk’s challenge to universities around the world was to come up with a system to propel a pod-like vehicle through a near-vacuum tube in excess of airline speed. The UPV team were selected from dozens of universities
to present their project, by a SpaceX panel in January 2016. After securing sponsorship, the UPV team are further honing their 2m-long, 1.5m-pod design, which has cost around 100,000 euros and will be tested at SpaceX in a few months. They are now competing against 30 other institutions. In January, the team travelled to Los Angeles, where they were able to see the Hyperloop’s 1.5km test circuit, one of the largest vacuum chambers in the world. “We saw prototypes that can fit in a suitcase and others that weighed more than 1.5 tons,” said Juan Vicén, a founder UPV member. Colleague Daniel Orient added: “The technology
already exists and is being used in different fields. “The idea now is to combine it and apply it to this project. the concept is a combination of a train infrastructure with aviation technology. Musk, when launching the idea in 2012, dubbed Hyperloop “the fifth form of transportation”. And the concept is similar to Japan’s bullet train, which uses magnetic fields to float above rails. But Hyperloop aims to reach speeds of up to 1,000km/h by avoiding air friction. Musk put together a team to work on a theoretical model in 2013, and, since then, he has invited the scientific community to come up with the best way to put theory into practice.
Fake T-shirts reaped a 1.5m-euro bonanza A UKRAINIAN woman aged 38 is in a serious condition after being hit by a car on the motorway in Adeje.

Illegal traps for fishing exposed
THE Guardia Civil’s Maritime Service officers in Gran Canaria have confiscated 16 illegal fishing traps, which do not comply with regulations.
The traps formed a long train, stretching one kilometre, off the island’s coastline. They were discovered by a Maritime patrol boat crew, during surveillance work on the eastern coast of Gran Canaria, about three miles from the tip of Gando, which is a buoy used in professional fishing. An officer, who checked the first trap. spotted that it did not have the correct mesh, so he and colleagues pulled up the other 15 traps. They all failed to comply with regulations regarding the minimum mesh size, construction and materials used.
NATIONAL Police in Gran Canaria have arrested three men, who have made 1.5m euros in a three-year period by printing copyright logos on T-shirts. The owner of one commercial trademark copied told police the
fake clothes were being produced in a Playa del Ingles warehouse. Officers who visited the premises identified the owner and two employees, aged 54, 33, and 34 respectively, who agreed to a search of the premises, accompanied by a legal expert. Police uncovered several false logos, featuring
fictional characters, along with T-shirts, which infringed copyright. Investigators determined that the trio were producing the T-shirts to order, and didn’t have a large stock of counterfeits. According to the books, the company recorded profits adding up to more than 1.5m euros over a three-year period.

Messi mission to aid kids’ top cancer unit B A RC E LO N A ’ s megastar striker Lionel Messi is putting his weight behind a campaign to raise 60m euros to build Europe’s leading child-cancer hospital at the city’s Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. The #paralosvalientes (for the brave) campaign will pitch the Argentine international footballer alongside the FC Barcelona Foundation and the IESE business school. “It will cost 30m euros to build the hospital and another 30m euros to buy the proton [therapy] machine, which reduces side-effects in patients,” said hospital director Manel del Castillo. He was speaking during the campaign launch, at Barcelona’s Nou Camp stadium, at which an astonishing total of 3m euros was raised. Apart from the 60m-euro costs to secure the project, a further 35m euros will have to be found annually for running costs.
Malaga bears brunt of horrifying storms
“For every child cancer detected, there are 200 cases in adults.”
Messi attended the hospital for growth-hormone treatment after moving to Barcelona at the age of 13 to play for the club’s youth team. He is also featured in a promotional video to help raise funds around the world. “For every child cancer detected, there are 200 cases in adults,” said oncologist Andrés Morales, who is leading the project. “In Spain there are 1,200 cases a year, but it is hard to find funding and we have to rely on philanthropy. “This project is the dream of a lot of people, and, above all, children. It is an unusual disease that affects randomly. That is why we must be ready when it comes.” The ambition is to double the number of patients receiving treatment at Sant Joan de Déu, which, currently, stands at 216. “This will be done through three financing sources,” said Del Castillo. “The first will be through the public health service,

FLASH flooding caused major destruction on the Costa del Sol last weekend as storms hammered the Malaga area. Emergency crews were called to more than 200 incidents as buildings
flooded, roads collapsed and cars were swept away. Properties were damaged and vehicles stranded as muddy water cascading through the streets. Some areas experienced 130 litres of water per square metre fall in just three hours. On top of these incidents, there were a number of
landslides, a homeless shelter was flooded and the awning of one building crashed to the ground. Meteorological agency Aemet put the coast and Gualdahorce valley on orange alert, which is the second-highest level. Fortunately, there were no reported fatalities or injuries.

Morales added: “Sixty years ago, we had virtually no solutions for childcancer cases; today, 80% of children are cured. “This percentage could be increased, but we need a centre where the talk is about cancer the whole time, and all the resources are used to solve problems. Morales also stressed the need to acquire proton machines for a form of cancer treatment, that brings with it fewer sideeffects, which is especially important for children.

But she didn’t have her driving licence with her and was refused permission, officially. The policemen had his wound stitched in hospital, while the man was charged with assault, serious disobedience, and a “disturbing public” order.

Learned laptop smasher

Abseiler drowning horror
A TEACHER in Spain became an internet sensation after a video of him smashing a laptop in front of his students went viral.
In a fit of rage, the Valenciabased schoolteacher smashed the computer to pieces over what he perceived as a “lack of respect’ being shown by the student. The master can be heard saying: “I am asking for a bit of effort. I am asking you for a bit of effort to learn this. We are taking 20 minutes to learn this - 20 f*****g minutes!” It is assumed the school is fee-paying because the student, apparently called Dani Mateo, replies: “I am paying for this, retard, am I not?” The infuriated teacher responds: “What? How dare you say retarded? Perhaps you should stop even trying and do b****r-all Dani Mateo. I cannot afford it, otherwise.” He then grabbed a laptop and destroyed it by smashing it against the desk several times.
A FRENCH woman died while abseiling down barranco La Pimienta, in Buenavista del Norte. The 47-year-old drowned after being trapped in a pool of water, because of a problem with one of her ropes.
Paramedics performed CPR on the victim, who was in cardiac arrest. She was airlifted to the TF-1 roundabout at Santiago de Teide, while paramedics continued the treatment. Once the helicopter landed, more paramedics helped perform advanced resuscitation without success, which confirmed the woman’s death. The mother-of-two lived in Huesca, where she owned a business with her partner.

A green light for new traffic-lights
ANDALUCIAN city Cadiz has introduced new traffic lights depicting gay couples. Ten lights at pedestrian crossings, showing two women or two men holding hands, with a heart in between, have been placed at high-transit locations throughout the area. London installed something
similar last year in Trafalgar Square for June’s Gay Pride festival. Local Council spokesperson Ana Lorenzo said: “It’s an initiative to acknowledge and raise the visibility of affective-sexual diversity. “It’s also a move designed to normalise the fact that there are different kinds of couples among residents.”
Migrants rescued
A car dealer’s contracts set up to ‘trick’ sellers
GUARDIA Civil officers are investigating an alleged cardealership fraud by a 42-year-old Guaza resident.
The accused, who owns the business, is believed to have purchased vehicles from private owners to
sell them through his dealership. He would issue contracts, committing to pay the purchase price in instalments, then give a small amount to the sellers as a deposit. In some cases, he even used bad checks. The vehicles were put up for sale, without him having paid off the owners
in full. And he would then sell the vehicles without settling up with the original owner. In both cases, contracts were signed but not upheld, thus incurring fraud. And at least six people are said to have fallen victim to this con. The case is ongoing in the Arona Courts.
Wrong-way lorry thief terrorises other drivers A TOTAL of 59 migrants from subSaharan Africa have been rescued about 160 miles south of Gran Canaria, trying to enter Europe. But nine others are feared dead.
In all, 47 men, 11 women and a baby were saved, said a coastguard spokeswoman. The migrants, whose sea journey probably began in West Africa, were taken to the Gran Canaria port of Arguineguin after their rescue.
A STOLEN delivery lorry, speeding the wrong side of the road and shedding its cargo of gas bottles, caused panic in Barcelona and forced police to open fire to stop the driver. But Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido was quick to reassure the public that the astonishing incident was not an attempted terrorism act. A Swedish man, identified as 33-year-old Joakim Robin Berggren and known to have psychiatric problems, ploughed through cars without stopping after stealing the wagon from the legitimate driver, who was dropping off butane gas tanks. The thief then sped on to the coastal ring-road in the wrong direction, causing cars to swerve to avoid a head-on crash. Several vehicles were damaged, and a woman was injured as gas bottles tumbled off the back of the lorry, around 90 in all, by the time the
runaway driver was halted. Barcelona’s city police, the Guardia Urbana, and the regional military police, the Mossos d’Esquadra, fired shots to scare the thief into stopping. He then put up such a fight when they tried to handcuff him that three officers were needed to pin him down. Despite the scuffle, though, he was uninjured. The driver, a 32-year-old Swedish national, was admitted to a mentalhealth ward, leaving officers to investigate whether he had taken mind-altering drugs before the episode. He has no criminal
record, was unarmed and, apparently, had no fixed address in Spain. Police, who suspect he had arrived in Barcelona only hours earlier, said his passport appeared to be genuine and unaltered. They were unable to question him because he claimed not to speak Spanish, Catalán or even English, which is understood almost universally in Sweden. Witnesses said he was driving “obsessively” and “with no attempt to avoid pedestrians in his path”. But they agreed that he was not aiming intentionally at anyone, or anything.

Maradona
double trouble POLICE were called to a Madrid hotel in the early hours after a “fierce row” broke out between retired Argentine superstar footballer Diego Maradona and his partner, Rocío Oliva. Officers questioned the pair, who confirmed an argument had taken place in their room. But police, playing down the incident, said they had been told that neither person had attacked the other physically, or wished to bring charges. Maradona told police it was simply “a strong argument”, yet a video shown on at least one website showed the Argentine appearing to punch his girlfriend. Earlier, Maradona, in the Spanish capital to watch Napoli, his former side, in their Champions League
first-leg of the last-16 draw against Real Madrid, was in bother during the match. He was involved in an incident with a female journalist, who claimed to have been struck by Maradona while attempting to interview him. In a video of the clash, the legendary World Cup star, who led Napoli to their first Serie A league title in 198687, can be heard saying to the press woman: “If I punched you, I’d destroy you.” But Maradona denied striking her, saying he merely told the journalist to stop bothering him. Napoli lost 3-1, and, prior to the altercation, an altogether happier Maradona had issued a tweet showing himself and Rocio holding a bar of chocolate with the message, “Nada como ir juntos a la par” (There’s nothing like being together).
Suicide horrors of the Guardia Civil THE Spanish Government has released figures showing that 52 Guardia Civil officers committed suicide during the last five years.
A special report, compiled every five years, records the number of suicides,
by rank and province. The current report, from 2012 until October 2016, reveals that Andalucía had the highest number of deaths, with 14, followed by Madrid (11). The Canary Islands
registered just one suicide, in 2015. Twelve officers took their own lives in 2012 and 2014. There were nine recorded in 2013 and eight two years later. And last year, up to October, there were a further 11. The Unified Guardia Civil Association has expressed its concern about the number of suicide rates.
Crime-fighting plan SANTIAGO de Teide has new plans to install security cameras and signs at municipal viewpoints, and it will also employ security personnel to combat crime. The Town Council announced these actions after a local security meeting with delegates from the
Tenerife Government, representatives of Local Police and Guardia Civil, and mayor Emilio Navarro. The number of robberies and thefts in 2016 has increased in the municipality, so Councillors want to implement something that won’t deter tourists from the area.
Hash gang sunk A MAJOR crackdown on a drug-smuggling outfit, which used high-powered boats to bring huge amounts of hashish into Spain, has led to the gang being scuppered. The haul, by the Guardia Civil and agents from the Agencia Tributaria, weighing more than 2,700kg, is one of the biggest seized in a single operation. Police, who arrested 15 people of Spanish or Moroccan nationality, believe they now have the entire gang in custody,
including the suspected ringleader. The raids were carried out in Granada, Malaga and Cadiz as part of Operation
Rebound, and police units seized five high-speed, semirigid boats. Each is about 12m long, powered by a high-
performance engine, which gives the boats an excellent chance of outrunning most other boats. The five craft, worth more than 600,000 euros in total, were used to carry the drug consignments to isolated Spanish beaches. They were then loaded on to trucks and driven off, the hashish being stored on a boat harboured at Motril, in the Granada province. It was later prepared for distributing around Spain, and the gang also supplied drug-dealers in France and Holland. Among the vehicles seized were seven cars and two SUVs. Some had been adapted specially, and fitted
with false compartments underneath to store the drugs. As part of Operation Rebound, police also raided a number of homes and industrial units. Several were in various parts of Granada, used to hide the boats and house the transport trucks. In addition, the cops seized a large pile of documentation, a computer, mobile phones and phone cards. And a number of weapons found at the scene were actually replicas. Police began probing the gang last November, when they seized hash as it was being brought ashore at a beach near Motril.

Enormous coke haul, and bundles of cash!
GUARDIA Civil officers, working with the US Homeland Security executive, have arrested an individual from the Dominican Republic, seizing 166kg of cocaine as well as more than 400,000 euros in cash, in Madrid. The operation began in late 2016 when the Guardia Civil became aware of two suspects, believed to be

involved in large-scale smuggling and illegal sale of cocaine. Officers, who kept them under discreet surveillance, believed that a significant consignment was imminent and arrested one suspect at a garage. They found 26kg of cocaine, along with large sums of cash in his possession. And when they searched his
property, they discovered a further 140kg of the drug, together with even more money. The second suspect was not apprehended, but officers also removed computer equipment and documents, as well as three vehicles, one of which contained a secret compartment in which drugs could be carried.
ARONA Local Police arrested a 35-year-old Moroccan man, suspected of robbery with violence, and for carrying more than 23 grams of hashish in his car. Officers hurried to a filling station near Costa del Silencio, where two young teenagers had told staff that an individual they knew had beaten them and stolen a mobile phone. The incident took place
last Sunday afternoon, and one youngster said the accused punched him in the face and stomach several times before taking his mobile. The other lad, who tried to stop the assault, said he was also hit frequently. The victims told the police where the suspect lived, and, upon arrival, the officers saw him outside his home. He was arrested after adopting an aggressive attitude, and when they searched his vehicle for the mobile phone, they uncovered the hashish and 640 euros in cash.

Spain’s trading with Russia is cut in half
24th February - 2nd March 2017
Are you a brokerless?
SPANISH entrepreneurs are furious that trade between Russia and Spain has halved since the EU imposed crippling sanctions on Vladimir Putin’s government.
Yuri Korchagin, Russian Ambassador to Spain, said the trading volume between the two countries has dropped by 13bn euros since 2013. “I have not met a single businessman who would say something in favour of the sanctions,” added. “I am sure that the business is not interested in its interests taken hostage by the political situation.” Korchagin revealed that Spain’s sanctions-related losses had so far totalled 785m euros. The sanctions were introduced by Brussels in response to Russia’s interference in the Ukraine’s political crisis.
Travel firms cash in on terror fears PACKAGE holidays to Spain have increased by 9% as more and more tourists avoid rival destinations amid terror attack fears. Travel group Thomas Cook says a fall in demand for holidays to Turkey and Egypt, through safety concerns, means a focus on selling ‘quality over cheap’ holidays has led to a price surge. “A combination of hotel price inflation and increased air capacity has intensified competition for the Spanish Islands,” the group said. “In this context, and consistent with our strategy, we have taken a deliberate decision to focus on higher margin, quality holidays, rather than chase volume growth. “As a result, overall UK charter risk bookings are slightly behind last year’s levels, while pricing is up 9%.” Greece has also seen a massive 40% surge in holiday bookings.
SOMETIMES, people think that by using a broker for insurance, it may cost more money. There is, however, no reason why this should be the case. As with everything in this world, you are free to shop around for the best price, whatever the purchase may be. But with insurance, you need think further than the cost. In Spain, there are not any English comparison sites, unlike the UK, where there are many, each competing for business, with a bombardment of comical TV advertising. But here, it’s a little more subtle. Of course, we do have brokers who work solely by telephone, from whom you get your quote for say, car insurance, and everything thereafter is done by post or, perhaps, email.
This is a very impersonal service and, maybe, mistakes can creep in. Also, you never to get to meet the person or the company selling you the insurance. And by telephone, it’s never quite the same. With Liberty Seguros, however, it’s a different and pleasant kettle of fish. They have over 300 brokers, many of whom have dedicated employees to look after expatriates. In most cases, they always speak your language, especially English, and also
other European languages, including Dutch, German and Scandinavian. By visiting your nearest Liberty broker, and there’s sure to be one near you, it’s much friendlier and more personal. You can pop into a nice warm office; perhaps have a coffee, and sit down faceto-face with a dedicated, professional, insurance advisor, who can answer any questions you may have about many different types of insurance. They will also be as
transparent as possible so that you’re not surprised after you’ve contracted your insurance. Liberty provides insurance for car, home, life, pet, business and commercial, leisure like golf, marine, and personal injury; almost anything you want under one roof without you needing to maintain correspondence from several other companies, and deal with lots of renewals, year on year. Liberty’s advertising carries the slogan ‘The Expats Number 1 Choice’, and, with over 175,000 expat clients in Spain, you can perhaps see why! Liberty Seguros can be contacted by telephone on 902 255 258 for the name of your nearest broker or agent, or visit www. libertyexpatriates.es for more information on all the insurances they offer. Botched boobs spark 10,000-euro pay-out AN insurer has been ordered to pay 10,000 euros to a Spanish woman following a botched operation on her breasts.

She was also told she would have to pay for the surgery, and the cost of a surgical team. On the first show of the brand new series are: Ballroom and Latin dancing sensations Joshua and Kerry, 9 from Ireland; gifted pianist Leo, 8 from Manchester; internet dance superstar Balang, 7 from the Philippines; football fanatic Braydon, also 7 from Warrington; the phenomenally talented jazz singer Angelina, 10 from Norway and Kung-Fu warrior Junayde, 7 from London. Brimming with charm, fun, enthusiasm and with skills that would put plenty of adults in the shade, the Little Big Shots may be small in stature, but are guaranteed to be a tornado of talent. Little Big Shots is a Wall To Wall (a Warner Bros Television Production UK company) production for ITV.

Let It Shine: Live Final BBC1, 18.45
After seven sensational weeks of singing, dancing and show-stopping performances, the wait is finally over, Tonight the three remaining bands will take to the stage for the last time to compete in the Let It Shine final. Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc present the ultimate battle of the bands, as each band performs to impress the audience at home and the Let It Shine judges, Gary Barlow, Dannii Minogue, Martin Kemp and a very special guest judge. Each of the three remaining bands will perform twice. The judges will give their feedback, but this week it’s up to the viewers to decide which band they want to win the competition. The evening wouldn’t be complete without an extraordinary musical performance fit for the final, before the winning band is announced by Graham and Mel.

RBS 6 Nations Championship 2017 ITV1, 14.00
Round 3: England v Italy After that dramatic last gasp win in Cardiff against Wales, England look to chalk up their seventeenth victory on the trot as they take on Italy at Twickenham. Coach Eddie Jones is expected to make a few changes to the side with the likes of James Haskell, Ben Te’o and Danny Care - who have all made such an impact from the bench so far in the competition - all pushing for a start. Italy’s heavy home defeats against Wales and Ireland will have given new coach Conor O’Shea plenty of food for thought - as ever he will look to skipper Sergio Parisse to lead from the front for the Azzurri. Kick-off at 1500. Mark Pougatch is joined in the studio by Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward and Lawrence Dallaglio, with pitchside contributions from Martin Bayfield, Maggie Alphonsi and former Italian international, Mirco Bergamasco. Commentary from Nick Mullins, David Flatman and Ugo Monye.

Antiques expert up in the air over ‘find’ AN antiques expert believes he has uncovered a genuine piece of British history, at a Benalmadena flea market.
Jose Fernandez, a professional collector, has bought a helmet which may have belonged to one of Britain’s most-decorated Second World War heroes. Inside the helmet was an original document listing the medals and other accolades named by the owner, initialled J.R.D.B. And Jose suspects that the leather helmet, which came with an oxygen mask for just 15 euros, belonged to famous fighter-pilot John Randall Daniel ‘Bob’ Braham. The RAF night-fighter, who made his name during the Battle of Britain, fended off enemy aircraft during the Blitz, and claimed he’d shot
down 29 German planes before being downed himself beyond enemy lines. Famously, he offered the German officer who shot him down a whisky once the war ended, to celebrate a British victory, before being liberated in 1945. Braham, the mostdecorated airman in the RAF fighter command, settled in Nova Scotia after the war, dying in 1974 aged just 53. More than 70 years after his heroic deeds, Malaga-based Jose Fernandez is now in touch with the RAF and British antiques experts to confirm the authenticity of his find. He claims the Benalmadena stall-owner had no idea how he came to find it, but he believes it could be worth 1,000 euros. Yet Jose has no intention of selling it, preferring instead to loan it to museums as a genuine piece of history.
Violent murder may lead to 44-year term A CRIMINAL from Liverpool, accused of shooting dead an Irishman at a Benalmadena bar on Spain’s Costa del Sol, faces a 44year jail sentence.
Darren O’Flaherty will stand trial for the murder of Dublin father-of-two John O’Neil, at Coco’s bar in the summer of 2010. O’Flaherty, who has a violent record, was arrested in North Wales in 2013 after three years on the run from Spanish police. After serving 30 months in a British prison for an armed hijacking, he was extradited to Malaga in 2015. John ‘Jock’ O’ Neil was on holiday with his partner and two young children, attending a friend’s wedding, when he was killed. The popular 41-yearold was targeted after trying to defuse a row between two strangers,
which started in a toilet cubicle. One of the men, alleged to be Mr O’Flaherty, stormed out of the packed bar on 28th July. He returned a short time later, said to be armed with a .38 revolver, and fired five shots at Mr O’Neil and more into the crowd. The Irish plasterer, who was staying at a nearby Torremolinos hotel, was hit in the back and stomach. Spanish police quickly identified O’Flaherty
as the prime suspect. Now 43, he was thought to be living in Spain under a fake Irish passport. But despite a widespread search for him, O’Flaherty eluded capture until Welsh police surprised him at a Chinese restaurant in Caernarfon as he celebrated his birthday in August 2013. O’Flaherty, who once served five years for stabbing a man nine times in the back, has been held in Alhaurin de la Torre prison awaiting a trial, expected to start next month. He is charged with murder, three counts of attempted murder and illegal possession of a firearm. In addition to the 44-year sentence, prosecutors want him to compensate his victim’s two children with 100,000 euros each. Mr O’Neil, described by his partner as a “gentle giant,” is survived by his son Jake, who was just three when his father was shot dead. And his daughter Jasmine was aged nine months when she lost her dad.
Runaway tax cheat is back behind bars
A TAX fraudster is starting a six-year jail sentence after being extradited back to the UK from Spain by HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for failing to repay £1.5 million. South African Leib Berger, previously known as Lawrence Goldberg, was originally jailed for two years in September 2011 after admitting at the Old Bailey to stealing more than £1m through a Self Assessment tax fraud. The 53-year-old had posed as a nominated tax agent, hijacking innocent people’s identities and inventing other clients to send fraudulent
tax returns to HMRC. Then, in December 2012, he was ordered to repay £249,999 within 12 months, or receive a 16-month default prison sentence. But Berger, who ran the fraud from a West London maisonette, fled to Spain. While he hid, HMRC investigations revealed that he had further assets. The confiscation order was increased to £1.5m in September 2015, and, a month later, the default sentence was amended to six years. Berger, tracked down and arrested in Spain earlier this month, was extradited to the UK on Tuesday.

How “old” is your long hair? By Carl
from Robot
MOST people think that stylists don’t like long hair, and are scared of it and would love to cut it all off. Nothing could be further from the truth. I love working with long hair, as do most stylists. The reason why longer hair can cause problems is that we are dealing with hair which can be older than that of the average shoulder length. If your hair is just past your shoulders, it could be around five years old at the tips. Bra-length, and
you’re talking around 7-8 years, and waistlength may be 10 years old, or more. Think about what it has gone through over the years; sun, heatdamage, constant brushing, tying it back, colouring and chemical treatments, to name but a few. What about when you’re constantly washing it, and tugging through those knots? All this adds up to years of wear and tear that will take its toll.
It will need so much TLC, and more hydrating and moisturising treatments. Regular cutting goes without saying, and you should be getting long hair cut at least four times a year. That’s every three months, so it doesn’t mean it will end up shorter. This is solely to maintain the condition and shape. There’s no point having three strands of hair hanging down your back, just so you can say it’s “long hair”. It has to look like it’s cared for, or it is going to look straggly. Your stylist will advise you as to how often you need to have it cut, and how to maintain the condition … that’s what we’re here for!
YEE HA, COWGIRLS! By Carl Pattison
YES, do it. You’ve always been told not to, but you have our permission to go ahead, “doubledenim”, that is. Once confined to the wardrobes of the notso-glamorous, denim has turned over a new leaf, and can take you from day to evening wear with just a few, minor adjustments. The colours hitting the stores now, for summer, are your faded-out blues and indigo hues. Even good old “white for summer” has added all forms of denim to the collection. Look out for super-
ripped and torn denim, and elegant deep blues, to carry off your evening look. For nite-time chic, denim can be teamed up with a casual T-shirt or a glamorous blouse. Mix it up with ultra-smart and worn-out denim, to create a “rock-chic” look. Even dungarees have
made a comeback, but make sure they’re not worn too high, or too short in the leg. From shirts to jackets and skirts, denim is the one look that really won’t go away. Keep it simple, and don’t overdress it. It’s the one material that really spans the ages, and can be worn by any shape or age.
Stunning snails give such relief
By Val Sainsbury THEY are considered as delicacies in several parts of the world, as well as a curse by many a gardener. But a certain type of snail comes in very useful in the treatment of chronic pain. In a study on rats, it was discovered that venom from a variety of snail, found in the Caribbean typically, was found to “stun” pain, and keep it at bay. Experts say that the findings offer fresh hope for people who currently struggle to get relief from standard opioids, such as morphine. University of Utah researchers used
protein from the Conus Regius species of snail on a group of rodents. They found that the effects of the venom were present for more than three days, sparking hope of a long-term option for pain relief. The Rg1A compound, used to kill a snail’s prey, finds different pain pathways in the brain. It seems to boost the nervous system as well as resistance to developing chronic pain in the first place, according to the study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Study author, Professor Michael McIntosh, said: “What is particularly exciting about these results is the aspect of prevention. Once chronic pain has developed, it is difficult to treat. “This compound offers a potential new pathway to prevent pain from developing in the first place, and offer a new therapy to
patients who have run out of options.” Chronic pain, specifically in the back, is most common among adults and normally improves within a few weeks or months. It is believed to affect four out of five people at some point in their lifetime, most cases caused by lifting heavy objects, or bending awkwardly. However, recent research has found that paracetamol, often given to sufferers, is relatively ineffective, while opioids provide little benefit compared with a placebo. New US guidelines advise doctors never to prescribe painkillers to treat back pain. Patients should be content with massages, acupuncture, yoga, or superficial heat, even if the pain lingers for up to 12 weeks. Only when the pain becomes “chronic”, lasting longer than three months, should patients turn to drugs as a last resort.

Driving-licence categories By Emma
from Motorworld
OVER the next few issues, I’ll be explaining the categories for driving licences, what they mean and their usage. The BTP category was actually eliminated last year to comply with EU rules, but many people will still have it showing on their licence. If so, don’t worry! Types of categories There are 15 categories: AM, A1, A2, A, B, (BTP), B+E, C1, C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D, D+E. What do they represent? AM: Allows the holder to drive a two or three-wheeled scooter, or a light, fourwheeled vehicle, although the category can be limited to three and four wheels.
The minimum age for holding this licence is 15. A1: Allows the use of a motorcycle of up to 125cm3, with a maximum power of 11kw and a ratio of weight/power of 0,1kw/ kg, and three-wheelers with a maximum power of 15kw. The minimum age for holding this is 16. A2: Allows the use of a motorcycle up to 35kw with a ratio of weight/power of 0.2kw/kg. The minimum age for holding this is 18. A: Covers all motorcycles and three-wheeled vehicles. Minimum age is 20, although, until 21, a threewheeler of 15kw maximum cannot be used. In other words, the A categories are for scooters, and bikes and three-wheeled vehicles. B and B1: Probably the most common category, which allows the use of cars, vans and 4x4s, weight not exceeding 3,500kg, and where they are designed and constructed to transport no more than eight passengers plus driver. This type of vehicle can have an attached trailer, provided the maximum authorised weight doesn’t exceed 750kg. Minimum age is 18. You may drive a “pair of
vehicles” comprising a car, van or 4x4, plus a trailer when the permitted weight exceeds 750kg, as long as the total weight doesn’t exceed 4,250kg, this being under a Category B licence. Three and four-wheeled scooters and motorbikes After three years, a Category B allows the holder to use a scooter/motorbike of up to 125cc. BTP priority vehicles Used for an emergency service, school-transport vehicles and those designed for carrying passengers in a public-service capacity. These motors are allowed, up to 3,500kg, and in which the number of seats, including the driver’s, doesn’t exceed nine. B+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the B category, accompanied by a trailer with a maximum permitted weight of 3,500kg. C1: Vehicles that aren’t authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum weight exceeds 3,500kg but doesn’t reach 7,500kg. Includes large vans and small lorries and vehicles, designed to transport no more than eight passengers plus driver. These vehicles can tow a trailer with a
maximum weight of 750kg. C1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the C1 category, accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer, whose weight exceeds 750kgs, but with a combined weight of no more than 12,000kg. Also, pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the B category, plus a trailer or a semi-trailer, whose weight exceeds 3,500kg, as long as the combined weight doesn’t exceed 12,000kg. C: Vehicles that aren’t authorised under the D1 or D category, whose maximum authorised weight doesn’t exceed 3,500kg. This includes large vans, small lorries and vehicles constructed to transport no more than eight passengers plus driver. These can also tow a trailer of up to 750kg. Minimum driving age is 21. C+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising vehicle permitted under the C category, accompanied by a trailer or semi-trailer whose weight doesn’t exceeds 750kg. Minimum age, 21. D1: Vehicles constructed for transporting up to 16 passengers, plus driver, and
whose maximum length doesn’t exceed eight metres. Can tow a trailer of up to 750kg. Minimum age, 21. D1+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising vehicle permitted under the D1 category, accompanied by a trailer whose weight exceeds 750kg. Minimum age, 21. D: This refers to mini-buses and buses, transporting more than eight passengers, plus driver, These vehicles can tow a trailer of up to 750kg. Driver’s minimum age, 24. D+E: Pairs of vehicles comprising a vehicle permitted under the D category, accompanied by a trailer whose weight exceeds 750kg. Driver’s minimum age, 24. How long does each category last? Categories C1+ C1+E, C, C+E, D1, D1+E, D and D+E are valid for five years, until the holder reaches 65. They are then valid for three years. All remaining categories are valid for 10 years until the holder reaches 65. Then, five years later, but all time-scales can be reduced through illness or deficiencies.

Taste of the good life IT was pouring in Los Cristianos on Saturday, but everyone was delighted. The sun glinted off the glasses as the wine poured forth from some of the best Canarian bodegas. The seafront promenade was the place to be, with 14 wine stalls, complemented by six others serving food. From small tasters to full bottles, the queues were steady all day from noon to 10pm. Cakes, bread, tapas, and hams all proved to be popular, and there was plenty of music to enjoy. A stage in the Plaza del Pescadora served up diverse
sounds, from drum bands to jazz and swing. At the other end of the spectrum, dance music wafted out from a DJ’s decks, and, after a few vinos, there were plenty of takers for a little bop. The large seating area, under open-sided canvas, provided tables and chairs for those who wanted to grab some shade. The first Los Cristianos Wine Festival was a great success, with 15,000 people attending. And 5,500 glasses of wine and more than 7,000 tapas were served. Dacil Leon, Arona’s Economic Promotion Councillor, was happy to report that by 4 pm, sales and visitors had already exceeded all expectations. Here’s to next year!
Benefits of raw broccoli IT sounds a bit horrible, but broccoli is said to be best eaten raw. Yet the tasty veg in its natural state has a number of nutritional elements, because cooking and processing destroys some of its anti-oxidants. Broccoli has twice the vitamin C of an orange, almost as much calcium as whole milk (with a better rate of absorption), and contains anti-cancer and anti-viral properties. Broccoli is widely studied for its apparent ability to fight, and can even prevent, many cancers and the body’s other ailments. However, the ability for it to be absorbed into the system from fresh broccoli is around three times greater than that of the
cooked version. But though tests indicate that eating it raw is the best way, “tender-crisp” cooking to a bright green colour still has excellent attributes. That’s probably why broccoli has been around, worldwide, for the last 2,000 years. Another method of cooking is by Quick Steaming, which also provides nutritional benefits, including a better retention of vitamin C, better firmness and a more vibrant green colour, especially from short rather than long-term steaming: say five minutes or less. In addition, the antiinflammatory benefits of sulphur compounds in broccoli have a strong track record, research-wise.
A recent study depicted broccoli benefits in small group of smokers, averaging at least 10 cigarettes per day. Participants consumed steamed broccoli for a 10-day period. The daily serving was about 1.66 cups, and the cooking method featured was 10 minutes of steaming. The group experienced a drop in their blood level of C-reactive protein (CRP), a blood protein used to measure a general degree of inflammation. Broccoli, raw or cooked, also contains selenium, a trace element which has anti-oxidant properties and is necessary to all the body’s functions, especially the immune system.

Bank presents tablets to extra-special centre ADEJE’S Los Olivos Centre, for people with special needs, has received four tablets from the social services section of La Caixa Bank. The Centre has, since its inception, worked on ways to develop and stimulate the quality of life of those who attend the centre. And, following a pilot programme, Centre Councillor Carmen Lucía Rodríguez del Toro said: “It has approved the use of computer tablets for those who have shown how they can adapt to different applications geared for their use.” As a result, the Centre’s group, represent-
ing the users’ mothers and fathers, presented a project, using new technology, to the social services division of the La Caixa bank; hence the superb donation. Councillor Rodríguez
del Toro said: “It will improve the range of possibilities for Centre users, helping to improve their cognitive perceptions, as well as their use of information technology. “The diverse therapies

Meet Millie! Millie is eighteen months old, and had to come to the refuge when her first family had a difficult change in their lives, and couldn’t look after her any more. They were all very sad about it, but Millie knows that, sometimes, things just happen which are out of our control. Millie says: “My folks here say I am such a people dog. That means I just love, love, love people and want to be with them all the time. I don’t mind other dogs at all. In fact, I get on really well with them, but people are my favourites, for sure. “My walkers love going out with me because I am full of energy and so good when I am off the lead. I love to run around and play, but I never go far from my people, and I always, always come back when called. “I also really like to learn new things and to keep my mind active. I think it’s because I am quite intelligent, if I do say so myself. Sometimes, though,
I just like having a break, and to sit and chill for a while and have some me time. We all need that. “My people at K9 are very good to me, but the truth is I can’t settle very well here. I am a loving and affectionate girl, and really want to spend as much time as I can with people, and not with other noisy dogs. “Do you please have a place in your home, and heart, for me? All I want is to be loved, exercised and cared for. In return, I promise to give you all my love and devotion.” If you would like to meet Millie, please get in touch with us in any of the ways mentioned below. Meet our dogs We have many dogs, in
all shapes and sizes, waiting patiently for their loving, safeand-secure, forever homes. You can see them all, their stories and pictures, on our website at www. k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Why not visit us at K9 Refuge on Calle Chimbesque between Las Chafiras and Las Zocas any day of the week between 102pm? used at Los Olivos Centre have allowed for the advancement in the autonomy of many users. They have also contributed to an improvement in the quality of life for those with special needs.”
Those who attended the tablets’ presentation, pictured, left to right) were: Cllr Rodríguez del Toro; Pilar Quiroga Gutiérrez, negotiations director for Tenerife West, La Caixa; Eva
María Salazar Arrocha, director of La Caixa, Adeje; Amadeo Barba Santos, President of the Los Olivos parents’ group and Artemis Carballo García, from the special-needs unit. The Centre, which has 119 users, also attends to a further 65 individuals, who have different needs and require different levels of care and attention. They are helped in terms of social educative, personal, community and workrelated integration. Programmes run by the Centre, among other initiatives, include occupational workshops, psychological attention, workexperience for social advance, adult development schemes, “My time” (family-break schemes), and a carers’ school.
Valenchino sell-out
SAN MIGUEL Lions Club enjoyed its Charity “Valenchino” at China Town, Trebol, in Costa del Silencio, last Sunday, and a big thanks to all who supported the sold-out event.
The quiz was won by a Los Cristianos group, led by good friends Wendy and Clive, who is a former Lion. Entertainers Gary Jay and Janie Jal (pictured), who were fantastic, had everyone singing along and dancing. Thanks to the management and staff at China Town, not forgetting our our own Lions for helping,
especially organisers Anne, Susan and Dave G. Our next fund-raiser, in early March, will be a Sixties’ do, with maybe some music from the Seventies and Eighties as well. “All information for this event will be on our Club’s Facebook page, so check it out for all information,” says Club Secretary Ralph Solomon.

Cats Welfare News
Lucky to be alive! LAST week saw the unfolding, dramatic rescue of a cat from an irrigation water tank, high up on Guaza mountain, which towers above Los Cristianos. The saga started on Saturday, 11th February when we were contacted by Sarah Ingram, a holidaymaker who had been hiking with her partner. Coming across the remote water tank, she saw a small hole in the concrete roof. She looked inside, and, amidst the gloom, deep inside the tank, she was horrified to see a cat peering up at her. The next day, after a 90-minute walk in the wind and rain, our volunteers lowered a trap down the hole, but, despite two hours of trying, the cat wouldn’t go in. We lowered food and water, but, with heavy hearts, eventually had to give up for the day. Over the next few days, repeated trips back to the tank were made, with more failed attempts to entice the cat into the trap. After a Facebook appeal for a ladder at least seven metres long, and volunteers to carry it up the mountain and to enter the tiny hole, Wednesday, 15th February saw the final rescue of Tankie, as
the cat had affectionately become known. She was successfully lifted up out of the gloom to safety. She turned out to be a beautiful, tabby-Siamesecross female with powderblue eyes, quite small and probably under a year old. She is now on a drip at our wonderful vets Don Perro, but she’s severely dehydrated and very thin. The vet said she will be OK eventually, but it will take time. We think she had been in the hole for a week before she was seen, and was deliberately thrown down there as an unwanted pet. She is very poorly and will need several weeks of hospital care, an ultrasound to check her organs, regular blood
tests, a drip for hydration, special food, vitamins and antibiotics. Seprona (Servicio de Protección de la Naturaleza), a unit of the Spanish Guardia Civil responsible for nature, have taken a keen interest in this rescue. Also in the tank were the bones of sheep, lambs, another cat and a dog, and it was clear that some of them had been alive whilst in there. It is suspected that this tank was being used to dispose of unwanted animals by unscrupulous people. The police have temporarily covered the hole with big rocks, and are arranging a locked, metal cover to be put in place. Following the wonderful response for a new name for Tankie, so many people suggested the name Lucky it was the natural choice. Lucky has touched all our hearts, but now we need to raise money for her. Can you spare even a small donation towards her care? Donations can be made by: Cash handed into our charity shop. lONE gUEST
Under no illusion… WITH lights crashing on to the dance floor, and tables overturning, it was the last thing the 18-year-old dancer was expecting on her very first job with a cruise company. “We were in Alaska,” said The Sound of Musicals cast member Lone Guest. “It was about midnight and we were in the disco. The ship started to shake, and we didn’t know what was going on. “The management made lots of excuses, and it wasn’t until the next day that we were told what had happened. We had run aground on some rocks, and the ship was ripped from one end to the other. “The whole of deck one was completely flooded, as well as half of deck two, and all the oil and water tanks erupted. “The guests were taken off straight away, but the rest of us were left on the ship. We were towed for six days to Portland, in Oregon, with no air-conditioning, or basics like bread and milk. “The crew were flown home, but the dancers were left behind, along with several managers. My Dad rang the director of the cruise line, and told him to fly me home immediately.” By this time, workmen had arrived to repair the boat, and it was another week before Lone was flown back to the UK. “It was really scary,” she said. “It was my first work contract, and I can’t believe I actually went back. But I did, for another 10 years!” Lone was born in the Hampshire town of Portsmouth, and spent her childhood there with sister Carla and brother James. “My name is Danish because my parents, Marilyn and Colin, lived in Denmark for about three years,” she said. “Dad was a jockey, but he was too tall and heavy to work in the UK. But, in Denmark, the weight limits are different. “Carla has been in Tenerife for about 18 years, and she owns Ritmania Fame Academy in Los Cristianos. She started it about 10 years ago, and I teach drama and dancing there.
“I love teaching, and I’m very passionate about passing on my knowledge and experience to my students.” Lone’s daughter Maddy, 11, and eightyear-old son Joey, study singing, dancing and drama at the academy. “I enjoy all my work,” she said, “and I’ve loved every second of it.” She has appeared in The Sound of Musicals for the last three years. “We all get along very well, and it’s a really good environment. “It’s quite an eye-opener for a lot of people who wouldn’t normally go to a West End production, and is an opportunity for them to see a little bit of everything. We perform the best parts of several shows.” As a four-year-old, Lone started dancing at the Iris Barnes School of Dance in Portsmouth, and, she said proudly: “I got my first pay cheque when I was seven, performing at the Kings Theatre in Portsmouth, in shows and pantomimes. “I left school at 15, and was part of a cabaret act doing private parties and special events, as well as being at drama school. “But, as soon as I was 18, I was off dancing on a cruise ship. I’d started auditioning when I was 16, so, by the time I was 18, I had a contract ready and signed!” Lone met an illusionist onboard, became his assistant and, eventually, his wife. “So I was doing the magic show, and dancing as well,” she said. “In 1998, we moved to Las Vegas for a year, and then went back to the ships for a while. We returned to Vegas and worked for eight years at the Flamingo Hotel with our show, The Magic of Gaetano, and Maddy and Joey were born there. “We left the US to come and live in Tenerife four years ago, mainly because Carla lives here, but I was also looking for a safe environment for the children to grow up in. “It had been fantastic, and there was so much to see, but I didn’t want to raise them there. “When I first arrived here, I danced in shows and went around the hotels. Car-
la had already been here 14 years, and I knew the island because I used to come over every summer to visit her. “I performed with her at first, because she had a few shows in the hotels. Then, after a year, I joined the cast of the Sound of Musicals.” She added: “What I like most here is that children seem to stay younger a lot longer. “I’m on the commercial team at The Sound of Musicals, and I love meeting all the holiday reps. They come to the shows in big groups, and experience the whole evening. “They can see what fun it is, and just how professional the performers are. And we know that if they enjoy it themselves, they will sell it to their guests. “The highlight of my career so far was having my name in lights at the Flamingo Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip. It was fantastic.” But, coming down to earth, she admitted: “I only get nervous when I’ve got family in the audience, and yet I’ve performed in theatres all over the world, with some of the top choreographers in the industry. “But, if I do make an error,” she said with a smile, “I’m very good at making it look as though it’s everybody else going wrong, and that I’m the only one doing it right! I’m a master at that!”

Dreaming of second spot THERE is still plenty of jostling for positions in both divisions as we face the last few games in the Direct Telecom Pool League. In Division One, it is all about runners-up spot because Gaffers A have already retained their title. And we saw another change this week as Dreamers A moved into second spot. The boys from Los Cristianos had a home tie against Exiles A and knew they needed a win, especially with rivals Palms A not in action. The home side started well, taking the early frames. And in this league it is difficult to play catch-up. Exiles A don’t travel well and, try as they might, they just couldn’t get into it. Dreamers A played well, and it wasn’t long before they wrapped up the match and the points. They have a key game coming up against Palms A next week, and this could decide who finish League runnersup. Tenerife Hammers A are still in with an outside chance of that spot, but their recent form has not helped. Palms Elite played host to the Hammers this week and had an easier game than expected. The first couple of frames were cagey, but things started to go the way of the home team,
who soon opened up a big lead. Hammers A had nothing in response and Palms Elite run away with the points, which drew them level on points with Hammers A. Phoenix Potters still have a slight chance as well, but they will be kicking themselves for dropping points this week. For the second week in a row, Potters were away to Terrace Roosters. Last week they knocked them out of the Plate competition, but this week, with Roosters needing league points, it was a different story. The Roosters learned from last week’s mistakes and made sure they took early blacks, putting their opponents under pressure. The Potters were not at their usual level and left too many simple pots on the table. Eventually, this cost them as the Roosters took the win, which relegated Bluebell A. Treehouse A still have games in hand, and, dependent on results of those and results elsewhere, it is still mathematically possible for them to finish second. Unlikely, but possible! However, Tuesday night’s result didn’t help. They played host to Rewind Rewired in what was a really close game on a very tactical night. There was nothing to separate the teams over the opening frames, with

tled the home side. In the next frame, Macaroni took a minute and settled himself before taking to the table. This ploy worked and he potted the black to take the frame, the game and three very big points! Bluebell B are now the only other team who can catch the Hammers C, but they need them to lose next week! For the second week in a row they faced Yates Bar, this time at home, though. Last week, Yates Bar stormed into the lead and Bluebell B had to take the last four frames to grab a point. This week it was a role reversal as the home team went 6-3 ahead, needing just one more frame for the win. Yates Bar had to dig deep and Terry, Dan and then Lee did so, winning the final three frames to again force a draw and earn a share of the points. Bluebell B must now win their final two games, and hope that Hammers C lose. And in this league, anything is possible! Palms Rebels will be happy enough with their first season, a win this week guaranteeing them to finish

both leading at different times. It was going to take a mistake for someone to get ahead, but it didn’t come, and the game ended with points shared. It wasn’t the only draw of the night because Gaffers A and Terrace Bantams also shared the points, which left Bantams kicking themselves because they had a real chance to inflict the first league defeat of the season on Gaffers A. The champions-elect were missing a couple of players and needed a wild card to make up the numbers. As it happened, though, the wild-card lost all three games, so they could have gone with just three players! It was an evenlymatched contest, finishing 3-5 after the first two sessions. Gaffers A then dug deep and won two in a row to tie the match. Mal, with an up-and-down-the-table black, guaranteed a point for Bantams, and Adi had a chance against Gary to win the clash. That didn’t happen,

though, because he missed a couple of relatively simple chances, enabling Gary to win and allowing Gaffers A to remain unbeaten in the league. Dave is now back in the top six as he won all three of his games! In the night’s final match, Rewind A were looking to beat Gaffers B to put the teams level on points. But Rewind A were experiencing one of those nights and Gaffers B took full advantage of their poor form, running away with the game and the points. In Division Two, it has been a real title battle. But it looks as though Tenerife James Hammers C are going straight back to Division One after relegation last season. However, they need to win their final game of the season! This week they played Hoppy’s A, who gave them a real fright. Hammers C flew out of the blocks and quickly took a 6-1 lead. But back came Hoppy’s with three frames in a row, which rat-

in the top half of the table. And they took a scalp in beating Tenerife Hammers A in the Cup competitions. They were away this week against Splash Bar, who were looking for the points to give themselves a chance of securing a final place in the top half. But Palms Rebels were in good form, taking each of the first two sessions 3-1 to lead 6-2. Craig briefly drew Splash Bar closer but Palms Rebels then took the final three frames and the three points. Exiles B enjoyed their night against Treehouse B with a fantastic, dominant performance. They won the first four frames, the highlight of which was Matt’s seven-ball clearance against Max. Treehouse B then fought back, with Ben and Trev taking frames. But Tomas and Callum soon regained the Exiles B’s lead, which guaranteed a draw. Treehouse B had nothing left in the tank and Dome and Tomas wrapped the game up for the home side. Callum then took the final frame to join Tomas in winning all three of their clashes.

Macs make a move WITH their closest rivals not in action last Friday, Division 1 leaders Scruffy Macs took the opportunity to open up a 10-point gap at the summit after beating fourman Gaffers 6-2, with a 180 from Steve.
Paso Nadas have two games in hand, but with little margin for error, and they’ll be hoping for a similar result against Gaffers tonight (Friday). Despite having no hair, Fluff had the strength to notch the only point
for the Playboys as they took a bit of a beating at The Pub. But Spear Chuckers joined the Pub in going above Phoenix, courtesy of a 5-3 success at Boothen, who had Ray firing in his first maximum. Jamie knocked in his sixth 180 for Exiles during their last-leg victory over Palms Sports Bar. The pack chasing The Tavern for the Division 2 title are running out of games, and the fat lady is surely clearing her throat! Their 7-1 hammering of Bar Leones gives them a 17-point cushion, meaning they will almost certainly take the crown with games

IBEROSTAR Caught Return to mixed form between two cups EG Tenerife 2 IBEROSTAR Tenerife were bounced out of the Copa del Rey by Baskonia, in Vitoria. But the 90-81 defeat could have been worse. They trailed 45-34 at the halfway stage but rallied to take the final two quarters 21-16 and 26-25. Short-term replacements, passing through the club to cover injuries, have not been a great success. Captain Nico Richotti made his comeback from longterm injury but managed just five minutes on court without scoring. Marius Grigonis had another outstanding night, with 23 points, and Georgios Bogris was close behind on

18. But support lower down the bench wasn’t quite good enough. It all gets serious now, in the European Champions League, with PAOK Salonica, of Greece facing Tenerife in the quarter-finals after brushing aside Partizan Belgrade to seal their place. The away leg is on Tuesday (28th Feb), with the home leg following on Wednesday, 8th March, in La Laguna.
IT’S good to win, and even better to do it with some style. Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife ended a poor run of defeats, moving up to 6th place and back on course to qualify for the Copa del Reina (Queens Cup). The breakthrough came after 36 minutes when Paloma found Ana Gonzalez with a perfect pass, Ana cracked it past the keeper and her team were up and running. It wasn’t all one-way traffic, though. Zaragoza created several openings but found home keeper Noelia Ramos in top form. The clinching goal
arrived after 62 minutes. Pisco floated the ball across from a corner and Jackie Simpson headed it home for her first Tenerife goal since arriving from America last summer. There´s little hope for bottom team Tacuense, from La Laguna. they lost 2-0 at Oiartzun and are still three points adrift of their nearest rivals. The goals came in the second half from Jone and Equizkine. The teams meet on the big stage of CD Tenerife´s Heliodoro Stadium on 12th March for their derby match.

CD Tenerife
He’s candid Camara! By Colin Kirby FULL-BACK Raul Camara was Tenerife’s unlikely winner against stubborn Almeria, finding the net in the ninth minute … after 115 games for the club! Naturally, he has spent the whole week on the end of good-natured ribbing from his team-mates. But the defender, soon to be 33, is one of the unsung heroes in a mean defence, which made it 573 minutes without conceding a goal. Another senior member, Carlos Ruiz, who is nearly a year older, turned in a classic performance in the holding role, just in front of the back four. Alberto has made that space his own this season, but he sat this one out because of a one-game suspension. And Ruiz, who lost his place in the heart of the defence a couple of months ago, was called on to play out of position, proving cool and flawless. Up front was a different story, Amath was again at

his magical best, but Choco Lozano missed a couple of sitters - and after him, there is no obvious striker scoring regularly. But it was a well-worked goal. Amath won the ball and slipped it to Omar. His deep pass fell nicely for Camara, who surprised himself with how easily he beat the oncoming keeper. The sound of opening floodgates didn’t deafen the crowd, and it would be
too easy to blame the feeble ref, who let wild Almeria tackles disrupt the game. He booked three visiting players in the first half, and could have doubled that tally. Aaron had two decent chances in that period, one curling wide from a free-kick, and the other a soft shot straight at the Almeria keeper. Tenerife really do need someone else to weigh in
with a steady trickle of goals! The second half was nervy, and Almeria began playing a little constructive football. Borja unleashed a long-range shot that Dani Hernandez pushed over the bar. But Amath did his best to keep the visitors under pressure, forcing a couple of corners. Aaron takes the set-piece kicks these days, but his corners were either intercepted by keeper Casto or neglected by his team-mates. Lozano had the best chance with a high ball into the box, which just needed a bit of direction applied to it. Instead, he produced a weak header straight into the keeper’s hands. The trouble with records is that they are bound to be beaten at some time, and there was another close moment when Nano cut in from the left and fed the
ball to Quique in front of the Tenerife goal. But Carlos Ruiz was on hand with his defensive skills to win the ball and clear the danger. Choco then stubbed his boot to miss another shot. Amath switched play from one flank to Aaron on the other, but his shot wasn’t good enough. Aitor Sanz replaced Omar and had a good shot heading for the goal, before the keeper got a touch to kill the pace, and then held the ball. There was some relief when the final whistle sounded, but it was another win, sending Tenerife third overnight before dropping one place the next day, into a cluster of three clubs on equal points. Suso, who reached his booking limit with a foul on Morcillo, misses the clash at Mallorca tomorrow (Saturday). The other bad point was a 2,000 drop in the crowd to 12,184, but the team deserve so much more.
CD Marino
Waiting game pays off By Colin Kirby ALL good things come to those who wait, though it might not have felt like that to CD Marino as they hung around for nearly two hours for Lanzarote to arrive after flight problems. But a solid team performance brought them deserved success, which enabled them to make up ground on the promotion play-off places. Lanzarote should have been suffering with travel legs, but an early raid was halted by a strong clearance from Kevin Castro, starting in the right-back slot. Lolo Armario got in behind the Lanzarote defence to send over a tempting cross, but there was no header to meet it. Quintero, who looked a handful for the reds, was tall and strong, battling hard against the home defence. But Marino were soon into their stride, Hamed curled a good ball into the box, put out for a corner, and Adan went close with a header as the pressure built, leading to the opening goal after 15 minutes. Adan, a tough player to mark, powered into the Lanzarote goalmouth, and,

though the keeper got a touch to his shot, it wasn’t enough to stop the ball from hitting the back net. It looked odds-on for more home goals. Fran Delgado opened up a chance for Fran Alonso, that brought a better reaction from keeper Agoney, and Adan chanced a long shot that wasn’t far off-target. The first half ended with Marino well on top and unlucky not to have increased their lead. Adan picked out Fran Alonso with a superb pass but he was closed down by the defence. With just a slender lead, Marino had to be on their guard, Ayoze could have levelled just before the break had it not been for a high catch from Marko. But the break seemed to revitalise Lanzarote, who came out with attack on their minds. Marko foiled Fran Gil with a big, punched clearance, and that took the sting out of the visitors. Hamed thought he’d scored a certain goal, but Agoney had other ideas and scrambled the ball off the line. Then Lanzarote, just a few
places below Marino, went forward again. Borja turned and fired a crisp shot, which Marko mopped up, but it was a reminder that the game was still alive. The Marino pitch was showing plenty of bare patches, as Fran Alonso discovered when he blasted a shot along the ground. It bobbled quite a bit but failed to trouble the keeper. Adan made one of his powerful runs and the keeper, deciding late to race out to stop him, just about made it in time. Coach Toni Dumpierrez decided it was time for a change, so off came Alonso and on came Brad Mills, not into his usual right-back role but further up in midfield. There was a scare when Lanzarote took a shot with
Marko out of position, but Saavedra was alert and headed off the line. Brad, becoming adventurous in his new position, went on a couple of inside runs, forcing a free-kick along the way. Encouraged by the room he was finding, he powered through the middle and blasted the ball past the keeper. His cartwheels showed is delight with a first goal for the club, 18 months after leaving the Middlesbrough academy. Home sub Facu Valiente gave the Lanzarote defence problems, and defender Raul pushed his luck with two heavy fouls on him. Had the Marino player had been less honest, he could have milked a penalty. But he shrugged off the second lunge and played on.
Lanzarote seemingly out of the game as it entered the final 15 minutes, broke quickly and Miñano beat Marko’s dive with a low shot to reduce the arrears. It could have set up a thrilling finish if the ref hadn’t lost the plot. He became very picky, and, with the help of his linesman, gave a red card to Fran Alonso, seated on the bench after being replaced. There were running arguments between the officials and both benches that served to disrupt the flow of both teams. Rosmen managed a weak shot at Marko, Mendy hooked a threatening ball clear, and, deep into injurytime, Navarro Navarro received a straight red and sending off to give Lanzarote a taste of the ref’s overzealous approach. The final move of the match saw a loose ball come to Marino´s Coly in front of goal, but his shot was high and wild. Lanzarote went into quickchange mode and dashed off to the North airport, with a tight window for their return flight. They wont forget their epic excursion in a hurry!
