DRAG ACT HAS LEFT SPANISH STUNNED
CANARY Islands’ Bishop Francisco Cases has accused Gran Canaria’s Carnival Drag Queen Gala winner of causing “frivolous blasphemy” after being reduced to tears. And, it seems, most of Roman Catholic Spain has joined in the criticism. Continued on Page 3

Cabildo chief wades in! Continued from Front Page Even Tenerife Cabildo President Carlos Alonso posted on his facebook account that Monday night’s transition, in Las Palmas, of drag artiste Sethlas, from the Virgin Mary to Jesus Christ on the cross, was “offensive”. And a few hours after showing the video on its website, IRTVE (radio and television Española) withdrew the controversial Drag Queen Gala from its website, despite what was, for the station, a huge audience rating of 5.5%, numbering 785,000 spectators. Bishop Cases added in a statement that Monday was the “saddest day” of his stay in the Canary Islands because “frivolous blasphemy triumphed into
votes and applause from a “fired-up crowd”. The Bishop said his eyes “filled with tears” as he
watched the video of the gala “with deep sadness and pain”, especially when he recalled the processions
and religious acts held in different neighbourhoods of the Canaries. What sparked great anger from all quarters was drag artiste Sethlas, aka Borja Casilla, entering the Las Palmas stage with an act entitled: “My heavens! I don’t grant miracles, that’s up to God”. It began with Sethlas dressed up like the Virgin Mary, and Madonna’s “Like A Prayer” blaring out. Then, a few minutes into his act, he reappeared on a “crucifix” with a crown of thorns! The provocative performance, which obviously wowed the public, who voted in their thousands, had repercussions on social media from politicians, and religious institutions. Tenerife chief Alonso posted on his Facebook
account: “The Carnival transgression: The liberal freedom is incredible, but it should never be used to offend people’s values. “Yesterday, at the Drag Queen Gala in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, during the stellar moment, that wasn’t Carnival or liberal - it was just offensive!” Respected daily EL PAIS summarised the Sethlas act as “a transgressive number that ignited the public, on the contest’s 20th anniversary, which will not leave anyone indifferent, due to its religious references to the Virgin and the crucifixion of Christ.” And newspaper El Mundo headlined the smutty event: “The Las Palmas Carnival crowns a provocative virgin, Drag Sethlas”.
Meanwhile, Tenerife’s magnificent Santa Cruz Carnival goes from strength to strength, with Tuesday’s Coso Parade attracting as many as 50,000 spectators to Santa Cruz. Full story: Pages 10-11 PABLO Ráez, a 20-year-old Spanish athlete who died at the end of February when his leukaemia returned after a period of remission, has left a remarkable legacy. The 20-year-old Marbella athlete, renowned for his #retounmillón campaign on social networks, launched it last September in the hope of encouraging more people to become bone-marrow donors. When his treatment began in October 2015 at Malaga’s Carlos Haya Regional University Hospital, he began a daily blog, describing the ins and outs of being a leukaemia patient. One year later, he began his campaign on social networks to find one million donors, saying: “I want to

raise awareness, I want to be of use, I want to make people feel better… and it’s possible, with your help.” Even when Ráez began his mission, he had nearly 225,000 followers on Facebook and more than 330,000 on Instagram. Five months later, each of his social network accounts had an additional 100,000 people. And his followers took heed, particularly in the Malaga province, where bone-marrow donors shot up by 1,400% in the last four months of 2016. The Health Ministry and the National Organisation of Transplants said there were 230,000 bone-marrow
donors in Spain before Ráez went into action, from a global count of 28 million. In his blogs, Ráez focused on the importance of such donations. “There is a lot of information available on Google on how to do it,” he wrote in an Instagram post. “And I’m going to keep
saying it - not just for Pablo Ráez but for the thousands of children who need a donor, because there are thousands with the disease and because you, yourself, could need that help at any time.” Ráez campaigned with enthusiasm and optimism,
striking poses with his muscles flexed, as seen from his picture, which became a sort of logo. As his Facebook and Instagram posts reflected, he loved sport and had such a positive attitude to life. In one of his last posts on Instagram, he wrote: “I don’t know what will become of me, but then, I have never known. What I do know is that I am finishing one fight to start another, but I will not give up. I am Pablo Ráez Martínez and I’m not a quitter.” And boy, did he prove that. Right to the end, and beyond!

British MPs ignore the expats in Spain
BRITS in Spain are “out of sight, out of mind” to MPs in the UK regarding Brexit negotiations.
That’s the belief of Anne Hernandez, a “Brexpats In Spain” co-founder, who has been lobbying Spanish politicians in her battle to retain the rights of British expats living in Spain. The university lecturer, who has lived in Spain for more than 30 years, said: “Most politicians want us to remain and want to do everything to support us. But, sadly, we are getting more support from the Spanish than the British.” Ms Hernandez, speaking after a key meeting in La Cala, Mijas, on the Costa del Sol, added: “Our first instinct was to talk with the Spanish. “We have been up and down the coast and everyone is supporting us. And we have also had some promising replies from the House of Lords, mostly from Lib Dems.” She was adamant she did not want to return to the “dark days”, before we joined the Common Market. “When I first came to Spain, I had to go to the police station every three months to prove I had enough money to stay for another three months and get a stamp allowing me to stay,” she recalled. “And I was not permitted to work.” Brexpats in Spain describes itself as a “nonpolitically biased” body, which aims to “gather and impart relevant information” to Brit residents Mijas Mayor Juan Carlos Maldonado also promised to fight for expats along
the coast. “No one realises your importance more than us,” he said. “There are 11,000 official British expats in Mijas alone, and we really value them.” Health was, understandably, a major topic at the meeting, with Hernandez revealing insurance could cost as much as 157 euros a month for people over 65, if free healthcare ends as a result of Brexit. Madrid-based expats Richard and Jean Appleyard, both 70, have lived in Spain for more than 30 years. “We are worried about the national health and our right to stay,” said Richard. “It is a thing of big concern, a lifechanging thing that could happen.” Football-lover Richard, who has a season-ticket at Real Madrid, added: “We are integrated here. We speak Spanish and all our friends are Spanish. The idea that someone could be using us as pawns in a game is very worrying.” That apart, his wife needs regular health check-ups for Crohn’s disease and other issues. Another couple, Barry and Phyllis Lissner, both 71, are also concerned about healthcare, having lived in Mijas for seven years. “The medical side of things here is second-tonone,” said Barry. “In July 2013, I had a heart attack and an ambulance came. They put a stent in (to treat weak arteries), and they followed it up. “When I collect my medication from the pharmacy, I have about seven different tablets. It costs about eight euros, which lasts for months and is very reasonable. But I am worried this could all come to an end.”
Dog-fight statement from Adeje Council
FOLLOWING the news which emerged last week of the illegal dog-fights taking place in Güímar, this Council expresses its total and absolute repugnance of this type of activity. It is an insult to human dignity and an abuse of animals, and we will support whatever measures are deemed necessary to ensure that this kind of activity never takes place again in any part of this island, or in the Canaries in general. This local government, having received the official information regarding
the events, and the court proceedings regarding the detention of a member of the local police from this borough, has taken the following two measures, bearing in mind current legislation and the disciplinary procedures already in place regarding local security forces. 1. Provisional suspension of the agent in question from all his duties, and suspension of his salary as long as he remains in prison and is the subject of a court proceeding. 2. Instigate disciplinary action following relevant administrative procedures which could, in this case, run concurrently with the court case.
Adeje Council, as must be the case, will always act in accordance with the law, and apply the presumption of innocence and not interfere with the court proceedings underway in the respective tribunals. We may also impose internal disciplinary actions. Councillors reiterate their absolute condemnation of the reported actions, and insist that all possible assistance be given to the police and judicial authorities to ensure that such abominable practices are never tolerated in our society. It is a society that respects justice and dignity, and respects and protects the rights of all living beings who form part of that society.
Social employment plans for the needy
ADEJE Council has opened the first phase of its new social employment programme, designed to address those in economic and/or social difficulties. It is also aimed at helping groups which, traditionally, have problems accessing the labour market. The programme, part of a two-year social project, is a borough initiative
in partnership with the Canarian Employment Service (SEC) and the Canarian Federation of Boroughs (FECAM), to develop programmes to encourage re-emergence into society. The main objectives are available online at www. adeje.es - where there are
conditions for selection of programme candidates, which are also open to those with special needs. The programme is run across a number of departments: social welfare, economic development and employment, and good government, under Councillors Epifanio Díaz Hernández, Isabel Fernández González and Manuel Luis Méndez Martín. The plan runs for a year, divided into sub-projects, with job experience included.

Police probe into robbers pays off

Rato given 4½ years after credit runs out
A GANG of thieves have been caught breaking into industrial warehouses and gas stations in Tenerife, following investigations by Guardia Civil and the police since last November.
The operation started after a tobacco-packing company, on the Güímar industrial estate, denounced a robbery in which the criminals got away with tobacco worth 40,000 euros. The first police investigation enabled them to identify a criminal gang, comprising four Spaniards, who specialised in robberies with force. They were in contact with like-minded people from Eastern European countries, living in Tenerife, with criminal records. The group were highlyspecialised in this type of crime, preventing and
disarming alarms and motion sensors in the premises where they broke in. They were also trained to avoid police detection while they conducted their illegal activities. Last month, Guardia Civil investigators, who noticed that the group had moved down to the South of Tenerife, suspected they were planning to rob the Chayofa petrol station in Arona. Although the four accused men did everything possible
to avoid being intercepted, they were finally arrested near the filling station with all the stolen items in their possession. Police seized more than 1,250 packets of tobacco, along with dark clothes, gloves and balaclavas. They also found a radial saw, used to open safes, and diverse tools like sledge-hammers, axes, crowbars and walkietalkies, which the gang used to communicate with the look-outs to avoid being detected.
FORMER IMF chief Rodrigo Rato has been jailed for 4½ years after being found guilty of misappropriation of funds, using credit cards.
Rato, chief of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) from 2004 to 2007, former Partido Popular finance minister and an ex-chairman of Caja Madrid, is one of 65 officials found guilty because of their use of complimentary credit cards. Between 1999 and 2012, high-ranking officials at Caja Madrid, which later merged to form Bankia, were given credit cards with access to a bank fund. The cards were used to spend an astonishing 15.5m euros on personal expenses, which did not show up on bank documents, job contracts or tax returns.

ETA terrorist is found, with just a month left
A FORMER member of the Basque terrorist cell ETA has been arrested in México after nearly four decades in hiding… just weeks before his crimes were set to be wiped out under the statute of limitations. Ángel María Tellería Uriarte, 60, was directly involved in the murder of police inspector María Josefa García in June 1981. He and two other ETA members, José Luis Eciolaza Galán and Antonio Goicoechea Elorriaga, fled after Eciolaza shot the policewoman with a machine gun in an apartment in Zarauz in the Basque Country, where she was held hostage, hurling grenades at the building as they ran. They were placed under an Interpol Red Card arrest warrant, but Tellería has been missing ever since. Now, nearly 36 years later, he has been found in

the town of León, in the central Mexican State of Guanajuato. Tellería, using various aliases, including “Antxoka”, “Koldo” and“Gotzon”, has been living in México illegally for all that time. His offences of “accessory to murder, unlawful possession of firearms and membership of a terrorist organisation” would have expired this month, so even if he had been found after then and declared guilty, he could not be forced to serve a sentence. He was taken in handcuffs
to the National Migration Institute (INM) in México DF before being deported to Spain for trial. “The detainee was living illegally in Mexico since the 1980s, and the crimes for what was sought would have prescribed (terminated) in March,” said the statement from the PGR (Attorney General’s Office). According to the Spanish press, the detainee nown as “Antxoka” would have belonged to ETA’s “old school” Haizea command.

face legal action and hefty fines if it does not reduce nitrogen dioxide (NO2) levels in the next two months. Every year, more than 400,000 Europeans die because of poor air quality. Madrid and Barcelona are Spain’s most badly-affect-
ed, with pollution levels of up to 53 micrograms of nitrogen dioxide, which is 33% over the EU’s legal limit. Granada has the highest levels of pollution in Andalucia, in the Granada Norte station, while Germany, France, Italy and the UK have also been warned.
Urdangarin, married to Felipe’s sister, Cristina, was jailed for six years and three months, and fined 512,000 euros, for abuse of authority, misuse of public funds, administrative fraud, influence-peddling and two counts of tax fraud. Palma de Mallorca court’s decision came after prosecutors requested
that Urdangarin should pay 200,000 euros for bail if he wanted to avoid going straight to prison. The judges ruled against the move, and, further, allowed him to return to Switzerland to be with his family while the defence prepared their appeal against the verdict. But Urdangarin must check in with the nearest Swiss court on the first day of every month. The former Duke of Palma was jeered by angry protesters as he left the courtroom, and Pablo Iglesias, left-wing Podemos party leader, was furious, tweeting: “Is justice the same for all?”
Plane’s near-miss crash with drone
A PLANE, attempting to land at Tenerife South airport on Sunday, almost crashed into a drone. It was forced to perform an unexpected manoeuvre to avoid a collision, and, fortunately, landed without any damage. The airport’s control tower has started a probe with the Civil Aviation Accident Commission because these small devices are banned from flying close to airport facilities. A Ryanair flight from London was scheduled to land at the time, although airport authorities have yet to confirm which aircraft was affected.

Vital drugs’ bust halts supply line F I S H E R M E N searching the high seas for tuna, supposedly, were caught with a haul of 1,500 kilos of hashish after being reeled in by patient Guardia Civil officers. Four men from Morocco and three from the fishing boat’s base, on La Palma, were arrested after being intercepted heading for that island on Sunday. It was believed that they were returning there in the hope of selling their load at Monday´s Los Indianos celebrations. The Askana Primero boat

A GANG faking residence permits and enabling Moroccan driving licences to be exchanged for Spanish ones, has been been taken apart in a joint Guardia Civil-National Police operation in Almeria. So far, 29 people have been arrested, suspected of forming part of the gang which charged between 1,500-2,000 euros to provide fake permits. The probe began in January, when Almeria Traffic Department requested further information from the Foreigners’ Office about a number of these certificates, which had been tampered with. All the people named on the documents were Moroccan and had applied to swap their driving licences for Spanish versions. And for these, applicants must prove they obtained their licence before their permission to live in Spain. Investigations continue, and further arrests have not been ruled out.
was built in Mogan, Gran Canaria, in 1997, and the owner had one of the highlysought-after licences to catch valuable red tuna. There are just 245 Canarian boats with this privilege, which allows them to patrol
the more-remote fishing grounds. But for several months, authorities had been suspicious of the craft, which met up with a boat from Morocco on Saturday near Fuerteventura.
Later, the crew were intercepted heading for La Palma and escorted into Los Cristianos on Sunday morning. There was an anxious wait for the go-ahead to search the vessel, and then, just before 3pm, the officers were able to uncover the mystery cargo. Part of the port was sealed as officers raided the boat, moored at the pontoon nearest the old beach. The drug haul was brought off the boat on large brown bags and taken, initially, to the port office on the quayside. Much of the rest of the port went about its normal business, and a small, luxury, cruise ship was moored on the same quayside.
Just beyond the pontoons, other fishermen were unloading their tuna catches under the watchful eyes of the port authorities, who check tuna against weight and quota allowances. A police source said the officers had been investigating the drugsmuggling group for some time, and were waiting for the right time to pounce. This was one of the biggest drug hauls in recent years in Tenerife, and one of the most important drug-busts made in the Canary Islands. Morocco had long been a source for hashish making its way to the Canaries and beyond. But this major supply route for drugs has now been halted.

The incident in front of Augusta Park, involved a Ford Tourneo van and a Fiat Punto, which were burnt-out. The third motor, a Seat Ibiza, was damaged on the side adjacent to the blaze. It provided a huge shock for local resident David Thomas, when he was awoken at 3.45am by a police officer. “I had no idea what was going on,” said David. “I thought is was someone messing around at first, and then I saw his gun! “He told me to look to the

SPAIN’S ongoing war against domestic violence has led to Guardia Civil officers trawling through lists of convicted abusers systematically to interview them, in an attempt to understand their mindset.
The Interior Ministry has called gender violence a “national emergency” after figures showed that 16 killings, by current or former partners or spouses, have already been reported this year. That’s as many as in 2016 overall, says Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido, making it the worst year on record. In four cases, the victims had previously reported their killers for violence, and at least two had applied, successfully, for injunctions preventing the aggressors from approaching them. Six children have been orphaned, and a baby was killed when her father threw himself off a balcony holding her in his arms to “get back at” her mother. The latest three deaths occurred on the east coast, in the Comunidad Valenciana. Incredibly, a 79-year-old woman was stabbed to death by her 86-year-old husband at the nursing home in El Campello (Alicante province), where the two Brits lived. And last Tuesday, two men were arrested over the deaths of their former girlfriends. One victim was an earlyretired, 47-year-old Guardia Civil officer, found dead in an empty bath with a plastic bag tied over her head in Gandia, southern Valencia province, and a former boyfriend was arrested in Móstoles (Madrid). The other victim, aged 49, was initially thought to have fallen down the stairwell in her apartment block in

Domestic-violence: Abusers may start to ‘See The Light’ Valencia city, but an exboyfriend was later arrested for her murder. Guardia Civil officers have already started their exhausting task of getting into the minds of attackers and killers, having carried out full interviews with 30 convicted criminals across the country. They have another 28 to get through soon, and, in total, they plan to quiz at least 200. The¡ aim is to ascertain the signs to watch out for, in terms of attitude, psychiatric and psychological traits, and behaviour. They will then set up two permanent prevention-andresponse units, to evaluate injunctions and other protection measures for actual or potential victims. The officers will reinforce safety networks for children caught in the crossfire, and look into the amount of funding assigned to town councils, ministries and regional governments. Their immediate intention is to tackle what is becoming one of the country’s major causes of preventable death. Interviews apart, police will also carry out research in the victim’s immediate circle and collect eyewitness testimonies, as well as examining the site of the crime. The research and interviews will be carried out by a multi-disciplinary team, comprising prosecutors, judges, professional training bodies, prisons, police forces, universities and MPs heading up domestic
violence departments, Meanwhile, a group of eight women have been staging a hunger strike in Madrid’s central Puerta del Sol square in protest over the government’s “inaction” about the increasing domestic violence. Gloria, Martina, Patricia, Marian, Susana, Sara, Sonia and Celia, who all belong to the Ve-la-luz (“See The Light”) Association, say they will not cease their protest until the Government calls a crisis committee together. They want this special group to include their 25 proposals for tackling domestic violence in a “State Pact”, or at least agree an immediatelyeffective action plan.
The women had been on a hunger-strike since 9th February. But after 15 days, Celia was admitted to hospital last Friday because her health was starting to suffer severely. Spanish law has been amended only recently to separate domestic violence from other forms of assault and murder. And records of those killed by current or former partners, as opposed to murders in general, have been kept since 2006 only. The overwhelming majority of deaths in relationships or committed by former partners are perpetrated by men against women, although a small handful of murders have been reported
in the last two years involving men killing their boyfriends or husbands, or women doing likewise. So far, however, no fatal crime has been recorded of a female victim dying at the hands of her wife or girlfriend. Statistically, the majority of victims of domestic violence are female and attackers are male, although the number of male victims - at the hands of either female or male partners - may be far higher than assumed. That’s because men continue to suffer greater stigma and shame and might not report their ordeal. In Spain, technically, “domestic” violence is where the victim and perpetrator is a family member (parent, child or sibling), or, in the case of relationships, where the victim is male. Aggression in relationships or by ex-partners in which the victim is female, is known as “gender violence” or “sexist violence”. This was illustrated a few weeks ago when a warring excouple were arrested in Ontinyent (Valencia province) at the woman’s home. She and her former boyfriend ended up in a mutual fistfight during a row, and the woman also inflicted stabwounds on her ex. Both were charged and subjected to injunctions, preventing them from approaching each other. The ex-boyfriend was found guilty of “gender violence” and the ex-girlfriend of “domestic violence”.

NEWS IN BRIEF Crane man crushed
A CRANE operator died on Monday in Gran Canaria after the crane truck he was operating overturned on a building site in Carmen Quintana. The incident occurred when the crane was lifting metal sheets. The ground gave way under two of the supporting legs, causing the vehicle to overturn and crush the victim against a wall. A heavy-load crane was called in to remove the truck before his body could be removed and taken for an autopsy. Yet the Town Hall gave assurances that the site complied with the correct safety regulations. The 38-year-old Columbian crane operator, who died instantly, leaves a wife and two children.
Bull-runner hurt
A MAN taking part in a traditional bull-running festival was left in a critical condition after being gored up the backside and knocked unconscious. He was stabbed, brutally, in his buttocks and legs by a bull before being thrown around a street in the small Salamanca town of Rodrigo, in the Castile and Leon region. The 56-year-old was taken to hospital for emergency surgery after suffering severe muscle damage, and a perforated organ. A further seven people were injured during the festival, known as the Carnival of the Bull.
Teen’s train death
A TEENAGER from France was electrocuted in the Catalonia town of Tarragona after climbing on to a train carriage roof. The 15-year-old, who was waiting for a train to Barcelona with a group of friends, suddenly decided to scale a parked freight train. Emergency services rushed to the Les Borges del Camp station and revived him, but he later died during the journey to hospital.
Barranco hiker rescued
A WOMAN was air-lifted to hospital on Tuesday after falling while hiking in La Laguna. Emergency services were notified that she had fallen in barranco Tomadero, and couldn’t continue because she had injured a injured leg. A helicopter was dispatched to rescue her because she was in an area hard to access by road. She was airlifted to Los Rodeos airport, and then transferred to La Laguna University Hospital, in a stable condition

Coso Parade huge crowd FACES painted, tunics fastened, wigs adjusted … all was ready for Tuesday’s Santa Cruz Carnival’s Coso Parade. And, thanks to a few tweaks to the organisation, more people than ever experienced a close-up view. According to the Town Hall, 50,000 people gathered along the avenues Francisco La Roche and Marítima to witness one of carnival’s the most prominent events. Yet the numbers were considerably lower than other years, possibly because of the bad weather. Even so, thousands enjoyed the show, whether standing or in one of the 7,500 seats set out by the Council along the route. A new innovation was the tiered stand opposite the Plaza de España, which held a further 1,500 spectators. And some 100 buses carried 5,000 tourists into the capital for the mighty show. It’s a huge operation to get the floats and bands in place for the start, and small groups were gathering early in back streets to piece together bulky costumes, and to practise their dance moves. Avenida de Anaga gradually filled up with the participating groups in their running order. And, releasing them a section at a time, got the parade moving pretty much on time. The Caribbean theme of this year’s Carnival provided plenty of inspiration, while others added little variations
to old standards, all with a cheeky sense of humour. Judit Lopez Garcia, this year’s Carnival Queen, was glowing with pride in her vibrant, orange costume, while many in heavier costumes were glad of the cloud that cooled the temperature. For the very youngest participants, everything was a magical whirl. Second and third generations of Carnival families were carrying on the fine traditions, and there was always a guiding hand to help those with a touch of stage fright. The tiered seating proved to be a big hit, and vantage points in the street were snapped up very early. It could also have been a bit of an eye-opener for medics in the make-shift hospital at General GutiĂŠrrez Mellado square, where they treated no fewer than 147 people, nearly 50% because of booze. Fifteen people suffered injuries and falls during the evening, while various others, needing X-rays and further treatment, were transferred to hospitals. A total of 17 patients needed further treatment and were transferred to hospitals.
The Local Police minor unit registered 17 minors, who had to be treated at the Carnival hospital, 12 because of alcohol consumption. A 28-year-old Czech man, who fell from avenue Francisco La Roche on to the port road, suffered a severe head injury. Paramedics managed to stabilise the man and took him to the Candelaria hospital for further treatment. But tragically he died the following day. All in all, though, Tenerife Carnival is all about spectacle, especially its main parade, and next year can’t come soon enough!

The killer caterpillar
Another happy winner...
A LETHAL caterpillar, which poses a major health threat to humans and is capable of killing pets throughout Europe, has returned to Spain. The Pine Processionary variety, viewed as a major risk to children and adults, causes dermatitis, eye damage and severe, allergic reactions. The caterpillar is black and grey with reddish/orange hairs on the outside, known as trichomes, which give off a stinging toxin that can be fatal to dogs. The poison can induce breathing difficulties, vomiting and foaming at the mouth, and pets showing such symptoms should be taken to the vet immediately. The caterpillars, which abound in the spring, are
covered with tiny barbed hairs, containing a protein called thaumetopoein, and, having swamped Europe, are now at large in the UK as well. And dogs are mainly at risk because they can pick up the hairs in their paws, which they then lick when
they become irritated. Thus, appallingly, amputations of the tongue or nose can be necessary to prevent the poison reaching the throat and causing suffocation. Pine forests, or areas with pine trees, are the most atrisk locations.

Never mind superstars… here’s a Spanish sex tsar THE Spanish Government’s Senate has appointed a “sex tsar” to help boost the country’s “catastrophicallylow” birth rate. A YOUNGSTER aged five was rescued from a seventh-floor apartment in Alicante … and her mother was arrested! It was 10.15pm when people in the neighbourhood saw the girl hanging, literally, from the aluminium window frame of the
seventh-floor apartment, with her full body outside! The little girl had woken up and was scared being on her own. Her mother had, apparently, left minutes before to collect her partner from his gym. After climbing on a stool, the youngsters opened a window facing the street and climbed outside, on to a small ledge. One of the onlookers, not
believing what he was seeing, notified firefighters, who, minutes later rescue the girl with their extending ladder. The mother was later found by the local police and arrested. She told police she had left her daughter to collect her partner. The child’s biological father is taking care of the minor, while her mum will face police consequences.
Young couples have, reportedly, blamed the decrease on being “too tired” after a full day at work and “late nights”. So, faced with a rapidlydeclining population, the Senate has handed over the problem to demographic expert Edelmira Barreira. The move came after the country reported a higher number of deaths than births for the first time, in
2015. Statistics revealed that Spanish women between 18-49 had an average of 1.3 children in 2015, which was below the European Union’s figure of 1.58. While many European countries are experiencing a decline in birth rates, Spain’s figures means it has one of the lowest in the developed world

ADEJE’S Abinque prize for 2017 has been awarded to cheese-maker Ángeles Nieves Garcia Rodríguez, who is also co-owner of leading dairy Quesería Artesanal Montesdeoca.
The Abinque award, for women who stand out for their contribution to equality, and to the life of Adeje municipality, will be presented to Ángeles tomorrow (Saturday), by Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga. The prize is also seen as a homage to rural businesswomen throughout the borough, who, like Ángeles, are building its future. Rodríguez Fraga said: “One of the pillars of the history of Adeje is our agriculture, and the huge implication of women in its development. “This prize recognises the many years of work of Ángeles Nieves Garcia Rodríguez, synonymous with the respect we have for all the women who work in rural settings - farming as well as caring for home and family.” Ángeles Nieves said: “Being awarded this prize is a huge honour. Artesanal Montesdeoca, in Tijoco, has already claimed a host of national and international prizes, including top honours at the World Cheese Awards in consecutive years, from 2010 to 2015. The dairy was also granted the Tenerife Cabildo Rural Award in 2015 for being “an

And Brigitte Gypen, who founded the extremelysuccessful Walk for Life charity, is a two-time winner. Ángeles, who succeeds 2016 winner Alexandra Rinder, the youngest person to win the Abinque award at 16, says she was interested in cheese-making from an early age. “I learned the basics from my family and neighbours, who made their own cheeses,” she said. And people can discover why her company’s cheeses are so popular by buying them at Adeje Farmers’ Market on Saturdays and Sundays, (8am-1.30pm) and Wednesdays (3-7pm).

THE House of Lords has voted overwhelmingly to guarantee the rights of EU citizens living in Britain, which is a huge Brexit setback for Prime Minister Theresa May’s Government. Peers are now insisting she agrees the guarantee, within three months of triggering Article 50. The bill will now go back to the House of Commons for MPs’ consideration before, finally, passing through
the House of Lords, whose members voted 358 to 256 for the amendment. “We are disappointed the Lords have chosen to amend a bill that the House of Commons passed without amendment,” said a Government spokesperson from the Department for Exiting the EU. “The bill has a straightforward purpose: to enact the referendum result and allow the Government to get on with negotiations. “Our position on EU nationals has repeatedly been made clear. We want to guarantee the rights of EU citizens already living
in Britain, and the rights of British nationals living in other member states, as early as we can.” The Government had previously argued against sanctioning the rights of EU nationals until British expats in Europe are given the same assurances. The House of Commons must now decide whether to accept the new amendment, or vote against it. If MPs choose the latter, it will go back to the House of Lords in a process known as “pingpong”. And Peers have hinted that they are unlikely to vote against it at the second time of asking.
Drug ‘colleague’ killed after coke deal backfires A DRUG trafficker shot dead a fellow dealer, then turned his gun on the man’s wife in front of their baby daughter. Police believe the killing, in a garage in Cartagena, Murcia, was the result of a cocaine deal which turned sour. The cops said the men, who had known each other for some years, were linked to “small- scale’”drugtrafficking in the Jose Maria de Lapuerta neighbourhood. The killer later surrendered to National Police officers, as he said he would, but only with a particular officer present. Police believe the meeting between the dealers had been called to pay off a drug debt involving around half-akilo of cocaine. The murderer, who has a wife and two children, is said to have lured the man to a garage on the pretext of sorting out the deal. Instead, he shot dead his ‘colleague’, who had recently completed a prison sentence for drugrelated offences. The gunman also shot the man’s wife, named in reports as Josefina, who worked in a perfumery store, although she survived her injuries. The couple’s baby, in the back of their car, was unharmed.

Bare-faced cheek! F E M I N I S T groups are up in arms over a nightclub offering free entry, drinks and 100 euros to women who “go commando”. Barcelona’s Bailodromo Caña Dulce has been called degrading and sexist after its
lucrative deal for females, who can prove they are wearing no underwear. Dones Juristes, a local group promoting rights for women and children, said it was considering lodging a formal complaint with authorities over the contents of a poster plugging the offer. There have even been Facebook calls to
boycott the club, but a club spokesman said the offer was merely
a publicity stunt. “If you’re not talked about, you don’t
exist,” he said. “This is nothing more than a joke in a very familyorientated place, where everyone knows each other. “It all began one night when a woman, who was about to get married, decided to do a striptease. It gave me the idea for publicising the nightclub in a new way.” Only two women took up the offer, which
applied on Saturday nights throughout February, with one reportedly asking her husband’s permission before proving she was going “al fresco”. Dones Juristes lawyer Marisa Fernandez said the proposal was “humiliating”, adding: “It’s one of the worst things we’ve seen. Its message is insulting and humiliating towards women.”
Drones could be the solution to immigrants
UNMANNED drones could soon be used to patrol Spain’s borders with Morocco at Ceuta and Melilla, to help repel desperate migrants.
Jose Antonio Nieto, Interior Ministry’s Security Secretary, has confirmed interest in introducing airborne surveillance along the borders of the Spanish enclaves. The idea came just days after hundreds of migrants stormed into the country from Morocco by scaling the border fences. Last month, one border officer lost an eye when a 1,100-strong group attacked the fences. Nieto has since visited Aeorum, a leading dronedeveloper in Spain, to discuss future plans. The drones would be equipped with heatdetecting cameras, to issue early warnings of groups gathering to mount a border offence. Despite the country’s recently-installed high fences, topped with razor and barbed wire, they are still being scaled by migrants, who will do anything to reach European soil. Around 850 managed to enter the country last month, proving the necessity for Spain to take further, defensive action. Yet the country has been criticised by leading human rights groups for its treatment

Municipal Plusvalia tax By mariano zunino siri
Registered lawyer at the tenerife bar association
THE Constitutional Court (TC) has annulled several articles of the Guipuzcoan foral law, regarding the increase of the value of urban land (Municipal Plusvalisa Tax). It assumes that it is against the principle of economic taxation capacity when the sale of the property has been made with losses (if it were sold at a lower value than when purchased). The ruling refers to the foral (regional) rules, but does not enter into the unconstitutional Local Entities Taxation Law (LRHL), even though
the articles of the law are identical to those of the LRHL (articles 104 and 107). This would force the legislative power to modify the law to match it to the Constitution, because if the articles of the law are unconstitutional, then logically, it should be the LRHL. According to article 104 LRHL, the Municipal Plusvalia calculation is based on the cadastral value of the property, and the time elapsed in the possession of the seller or donor or deceased. In the case of a sale, the surplus value must be paid by the seller, but not in the case of a donation or succession in which the recipient, or the inheritor, must pay. In this way, those who lose out would be exempt of payment. In another Plusvalia Tax blog at http://www. abogadosmadridtenerife. com/english/blog/plusvaluetax-the-deed-of-purchaseand-the-deed-of-sale-mayprove-the-depreciation/), I wrote: “It is important to note that the increase
in the value of the land is objectively fixed because this fact has been questioned by the contentious justiceadministrative, in this case the High Court of Justice of the Valencian Community. “That is, if the increase in the value of the land has not actually occurred, there is no taxable event. The problem in these cases is to prove that such an increase has not occurred.” Now the TC has picked up this position, contradicting that of the State Attorney, which considered that the increase should be based on the cadastral value (objectively calculated by the City Halls and always increasing, based on the improvements made in the area of the Property by municipalities) and not in the real value. In cases of losses, you need firstly to submit a letter requesting rectification and the return of improper income to the Town Hall (stating, if applicable, the amount paid). At this time, the administrative way is opened and the municipal authority must answer, one
Leading Spanish economist is predicting gloom and doom
‘Our 50-year debt’
R O B E R T O Centeno, a leading Spanish economist, claims that the country has been “ruined for 50 years”.
The former adviser to US President Donald Trump’s election team, on Hispanic issues, said that Spain had borrowed 603 billion euros “which it cannot conceivably pay back”. In a blog post, Centeno (above) wrote: “Spain is moving steadily towards the suspension of payments, which is the result of out-of-control public waste, financed with the largest debt bubble in our history, supported by the European Central Bank, with its crazy policy of zero-interest rateexpansion, and without any supervision.” He added: “It will lead to the ruin of several generations of Spaniards over the next 50 years.” Centeno went on to say: “We have a Third-World production model of speculators and waiters,
way or another (probably refusing the return). Then, once the administrative route is finished, the contentiousadministrative route is opened, with more guarantees to be heard properly. Of course, before acting in front of the contentiousadministrative Courts, it is advisable to consider whether it is worth doing it, taking into account the possibilities that we have and the expenses that must be incurred. In any case, it is understood that we have to pay and then claim the return, which is how the administrative procedure works. As for the contentiousadministrative procedure, the deadline to sue is two months from the final decision in administrative proceedings. As I have said in previous blogs, there are more and more sentences that annul the tax settlements (plusvalia tax included), even if a second instance (appeal) has to be reached. It is likely that as a consequence of the TC’s
ruling, it will generate a large number of refund requests. Don’t forget, it is the citizen who has the burden of proof to prove that there has been a depreciation. In this sense, the jurisprudence of the High Courts of Justice (as in the case of the Valencian Community) have already been acknowledging that the Deeds are sufficient evidence of depreciation. Hence, this is an important advantage in this regard. The ruling of the TC does not refer to the retro-activity of its effects. But the logical thing would be to think of it being applicable when the liquidations practised are not firm because they have been appealed at the time. Or, if it is a question of self-assessments, which have not mentioned the possibility of urging rectification for more than four years from the end of the submission deadline. Those who have paid municipal capital gains in the last four years could ask for a tax refund if the conditions are fulfilled. Let’s see what happens in the near future.
Opel and Vauxhall could be snapped up by the French

with a labour market where the majority of jobs created are temporary, and, with remunerations of 600 euros, the largest wage-decline in living memory. “And all this was completed with a broken pension system and an insolvent financial system.”
Yet the rant appears illtimed, coming after Spain’s 13 consecutive quarters of growth in February, which was much stronger than that of any of its neighbouring countries. The economy also defied expectations after GDP growth for 2016 reached 3.2%.
Yet there is a possibility that a French group may be interested in taking them over. The PSA Group, makers of Citroen and Peugeot cars, and working with GM on a number of projects in Europe, is now the third-largest manufacturer there, behind Volkswagen and Renault-Nissan, which has recently recorded increased sales. Vauxhall employs 4,500 staff in the UK, but unions estimate that there are a further 30,000 people working in occupations connected with Vauxhall and its vehicles. The French company is partly owned by the state, but also has investment from the Peugeot group, as well as a Chinese vehicle manufacturer. And should a sale be agreed, the new company would become Europe’s No.2 vehicle producers.

5 Gold Rings
Sunday 5th March, ITV1, 18.40
Phillip Schofield hosts a brand new interactive game show 5 Gold Rings where every pixel counts. The format sees two teams go head to head over five rounds. One team will be walking away with up to £25,000 whilst the other will leave with nothing. Who wins and who loses is decided in a unique way… using five gold rings. Phillip Schofield said: “I love the whole concept of this show. It’s such a simple idea. The longer you stay in the game, the smaller the rings get. It looks amazing and anyone of any age can play. I can’t wait to get started!” The teams will have to battle it out against the clock to answer questions by placing gold rings onto a supersized image displayed beneath their feet on a huge circular LED floor. For example, the picture might be a map of the world and teams will attempt the question, ‘Where is the highest mountain on earth?’ by placing a gold ring on the image where they think the answer is. If the contestant correctly encircles the answer, they move onto the next round and more money but if they’re wrong they lose that ring forever.

The Voice UK ITV1, 20.30
It’s the first of the live knockout shows on The Voice UK and tonight performing for a place in the quarterfinal is Team JHud. Jennifer Hudson’s six remaining acts will become three as they sing for her and fellow coaches will.i.am, Sir Tom Jones and Gavin Rossdale. The coaches can only watch and give their opinion though as tonight it is down to the public vote and the two acts with the most votes will go through to the quarter-final leaving Jennifer to save one other act. The three acts that make it through will be one step closer to the chance of winning a recording contract with Polydor Records. Sir Tom Jones will also be performing live in the studio.

After ten days of blood, sweat and tears under the direction of five other former Special Forces experts, the remaining seven recruits face the final Special Forces veteran - Jason Falla, a former member of the Australian Special Air Service Regiment, otherwise known as the SASR. Starting with some authentic strength and fitness drills, Jason puts them trough Iron Bar PT, an exercise designed to break recruits and test those that have prepared themselves physically for the selection course. Following this, they are put through tactical questioning, an interrogation test that shows which recruit is really switched on mentally. If they can survive Jason and his exacting standards, then maybe they will get through to the final lone warrior challenge, a tough endurance race involving weighted rucksacks and mental tests.

THERE are many forms of male hair-loss, and many forms of treatment, too. You either accept it or you fight it, but there’s always a price to pay for trying to turn back the clock.
you do (or don’t do) about it, is up to you. There are tablets that claim to give you back your hair, yet hide those lethal side effects; hair transplants that work but which are so costly and very painful; new hair pieces that are undetectable, but who wants to wear a plastic film on his head that is only removed every few months? It’s every man’s own decision to go with it or fight it, but every

One golden night By Carl Pattison LAST Sunday evening’s 2017 Oscars didn’t fail to surprise us, with some of the most stunning gowns ever to be walked down that famous red carpet. With a nip and a tuck, and from hair to nails, every star was preened to perfection, and there were enough gowns and jewels to fill a small stadium. The Oscars bring out the best in worldwide fashion, with gowns being flown in from all four corners of the globe, and most actresses are begged by the best fashion houses to wear their particular brands.
Jewellery is borrowed for the night and never bought, because once it’s been seen, it’s never worn again. The best publicity for a company is to have its product worn by the most-nominated actress. This year saw Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry and Meryl Streep stealing the limelight for all the right reasons. The only negative for me was that, given my profession, the hair
styling let some ladies down. But, overall, everyone went 100% all out to give us something to talk about for the next few weeks. As with all fashion, it’s not what you’re wearing it’s how you’re wearing it. I’m sure that plans are already underway to copy the dresses worn, and all this filters down to your stores and influences what you will be wearing, too.
Colour and contrast
is not an option. That’s because it would take up too much room. However, you can trick the eye into grouping certain areas together by a common element. For example, if you had a beige sofa with a darkbrown rug in the lounge part of the room, you might go for dark-brown chairs and a beige rug in the dining area. Everything tones together nicely, but your brain will see each area completely separately. An alternative method would be to have a neutral colour scheme all over, with, perhaps, an accent picture in red in the lounge area. Grouping four red dining chairs around a table in a different area will mean the overall
scheme ties together, but the dining section will stand out as separate. Bearing in mind that light colours make rooms look bigger and dark colours draw them in, you can also use an accent colour on a wall, provided you do so sparingly. For example, you could have a bright-blue accent wall at one end of a room, patterned scatter-cushions on the sofa that include the same tone, and a toning centre-piece on the dining table. Each area has its own character, but the common theme runs through the whole area, making it look coordinated and planned. The other advantage of using colour sparingly is that you can change your look whenever you feel like it. Imagine furnishing your whole room in beige or grey. It would be monotonous and rather insipid. But introduce a few pops of colour through accessories, and your room can come alive. Moveable objects, such as cushions and throws, or a vase or picture, can change your environment completely with the use of colour and contrast, giving each area its own specific purpose.

Kids’ childcare stress By Val Sainsbury FOR many working mothers, putting a young child into a crèche isn’t always a matter of choice. Sometimes, there really is no alternative, especially with bills to be paid. But a recent study has shown that small children, who spend too long in childcare, suffer from stress, and that
could make them feel more shy when they get older. The stress levels of toddlers in crèches are around onethird higher than those who stay at home. And while youngsters at home with a parent become more relaxed over the course of the day, those in childcare grow more anxious. Those who spend more than eight hours in childcare are the most stressed, based on saliva samples taken by researchers and tested for the stress hormone cortisol. The study suggests that this is because they miss their parents, and have upsetting conflicts with other children.
Stress at such a young age can alter the way toddlers’ brains develop, making them more shy, with less selfcontrol. But the good news for working parents is that they can reverse some of the ill-effects by spending quality time with their children, after picking them up. The study, by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, looked at 112 young children, aged around one year to 18 months. Lead author Professor Mary Britt Drugli said: “Young children, who are not very competent socially, and don’t have good language skills, suffer stress in childcare.
They miss their parents, and dislike being separated from them, and it is hard for them in day-care, as it would be with a baby-sitter. “We don’t know if the stress they suffer is harmful, but parents can mitigate it by spending time with their children during afternoons and weekends. “They should make meals together, sit together and read books, so the children get the contact they have missed while in childcare.” The youngsters studied had all been in day-care for fiveto-six months, and their saliva was measured for cortisol in the morning and
mid-afternoon. The stress hormone is a marker of emotional reactions, and rises when demands on children exceed their ability to cope. Readings were 32% higher in children who attended daycare than those at home. Cortisol normally follows the same rhythm, reaching its highest level about 30 minutes after waking, then falling during the day and evening. But Professor Drugli said: “We saw that stress levels rose during the day in childcare, while they fell at home where the environment remained stable.”

Food review: Adeje Chicken Restaurant
It just gets tastier! WE had a fabulous welcome from the family who run Adeje’s Chicken Restaurant in the heart of Buzanada, and that was just the start of our superb, lunchtime visit. Mum Chemy is in the kitchen, at the helm of her fresh, homecooked, secret recipes, while son Bryan and his wife, Camila, who gave birth to their second son just a month ago, provide the bar and waiter service. Chemy has now added an excellent selection of meats to the menu, but she still retains her delicious chicken dishes, complete with all flavours of sauces
- honey, garlic and spicy - as well as plain, grilled-chicken breast. In other words, the same, exceptionallytasty dishes. But now, with lots more to sample! We ordered our CocaCola and water and began perusing the new, extensive menu. After a while
of choosing and then changing our minds because the selections were so convincing, we finally came to a decision. We started with garlic prawns (succulent prawns, soaked in garlic and herbs with a slight spicy kick) and fried cheese, in cranberry sauce and
gooey, slightly-salted melted cheese. These proved to be wise choices because both dishes were delicious! For the main course, we went for something new. My colleague had the chicken Cordon Bleu, stuffed with ham and cheese, and accompanied by Canarian potatoes, and

mojo sauces, served with salad. I selected the delicious chicken goulash with creamy mushroom sauce. It also included peppers, onions, bacon, and, for a change, served with rice. By the time we’d cleared our plates, we really were full, but we couldn’t leave without trying Chemy’s homemade Tiramasu. Words fail me, except to say that it was amazing! Other main courses include mixed grill, lasagna, rabbit in Canarian-style sauce, goat, fish and rice dishes … there is so much from which to choose.
And if you just fancy a snack, Chemy also offers burgers, hot dogs and fajitas. So, if you are looking for something typical, then Adeje chicken in Buzanada is the place to go. But arrive early as it is always full because the food is excellent, and at a reasonable price. A pint of beer is only one euro! Give it a try. We can highly recommend a visit. You’ll find the restaurant on the roundabout in the centre of Buzanada. It does not open on Mondays, and if you are eating, the kitchen is closed from 4-6pm. But the bar remains open for snacks.

After 100 years, Lions are still roaring loudly WHEN you walk into one of the many Lions’ charity shops in Tenerife, you may not be aware of the sheer size of the worldwide organisation, or the number of lives the members touch with their good works. This year is the 100th anniversary of its founding by Melvin Jones in Illinois, America. “We Serve” is their proud motto, and President Norman Goodall has done that for 30 years with Tenerife Isla Sur Lions, through its fund-raising activities, including shops in the Apolo Centre, Los Cristianos, and Las Gaviotas, Costa del Silencio. This branch of the Lions, formed by 15 like-minded business owners, was set up as a social group, driven by good intentions. It is now one of Tenerife’s 11 Lions clubs and is run by 16 volunteer members, all giving their time freely. In fact, all our Lions’ clubs here are extremely generous with their time and help, and many youngsters and their carers in the UK have much for which to thank them. A small cog, perhaps, but,
as part of the 1.5 million members in 240 countries, these clubs operate under the same guiding principles of helping those in need. “Our first big project was to buy a lifeboat from the UK for Los Cristianos - the first of its kind, incidentally - get it over here with the help of Fred Olsen, and, after many years good use, we even managed to sell the old boat to fund further projects” recalled Norman. “One of our big annual causes is to send sociallydisadvantaged Tenerife children on holiday. It used to be to England,
but in recent years we have changed that to Torremolinos, in mainland Spain. “With carers to look after them, the group is usually between 30 and 40-strong. We also run a university scholarship scheme for bright, deserving young people who would otherwise miss out for financial reasons.” These are just some of the reasons why, in 2010, Norman received an MBE from Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace. The Lions work closely with the social services and schools. But, said Norman: “The financial crisis has
meant big cut-backs, so our help is more important than ever. “We have furnished orphanages in Arona and Adeje, supported victims of domestic violence, and helped people with hearing and visual needs. “We never know, from day to day, what new challenges we might have to deal with.” A good marker for how much all the Lions do is that they were voted the leading nongovernment organisation in the world, eclipsing giants such as Oxfam, Children In Need, Red Cross and the RSPCA. And it’s not just their direct intervention that makes
the difference; the Lions’ Christmas treat for orphans involves Wingate School pupils, who look after the children on a visit to a local theme park, and provide presents for them as well. Our Lions Clubs are always looking for new members, and the minimum commitment is usually to attend one meeting a month, or, perhaps, offer a few hours unpaid work in their charity shops. If you want to get involved with Isla Sur Lions, check out the website w w w. t e n e r i f e s u r l i o n s . org or contact Norman at normangoodall@gmail.com or call 629 487 090.

Cats Welfare News
Cat or kitten: which is better for you? WHEN people think about adding a cat to their lives, they automatically think “kitten.” A kitten seems to make perfect sense; a little fluff-ball who’ll grow into your household and your heart. For some people, though, an adult cat is a better option. Everyone loves kittens! Maybe it’s those large eyes, oversized ears or their playfulness that everyone loves. Kittens can be a lot of work and expense, though. Injections, neutering and microchipping all add up to a lot of expense in the first year. Then there’s the training, from the litter tray to helping your kitten learn to stay off the kitchen worktops. You also need to either kitten-
proof your home, or spend months picking your little baby off the curtains, the kids, the back of the sofa or your slippers. Kittens are fragile, and may accidentally be hurt by young children who don’t understand the concept of “gentle.” Similarly, a kitten isn’t the best choice for people who are a little unsteady on their feet, or aren’t able to chase, or otherwise keep up with, an
energetic feline baby. On the other hand, a kitten can be perfect for a family with older, more-responsible children, or a source of delightful amusement to an active, older adult. You just need to look carefully at your living situation, and consider the problems and pleasures a kitten will bring. Cat considerations Adult cats offer some compelling advantages and few
disadvantages. If you adopt an adult cat, you know exactly what you’re getting. Laidback or active, quiet or vocal, cuddly or demanding, an adult cat has already settled into his own persona. If you want to make sure you’re getting, say, a mellow pet, choose a cat beyond the ants-in-his-pants kitten stage. An adult cat’s personality may be set, but his affections aren’t. Adult cats bond with you just as tightly as a kitten does. Through Cats Welfare, all adult cats have been neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped free of charge, so they are definitely the cheaper option. And they go on trial so you can be sure you’ve made the right decision.
Most people still choose a kitten over a cat; such is the power of packaging. Look at kittens, of course, but check out the cats, too. Strike a blow against ageism! Molly needs a home Molly is a beautiful, black, young adult who was abandoned last year when her owners left the island. We need a kind, caring home for her. Accion del Sol News
Four little sisters need homes! THIS little girl, along with her three sisters, was found abandoned with her eyes not even open. They have been keeping us very busy with their never-ending demands for milk formula, of which we are always in desperate need. Dangerous-dog licences Accion Del Sol would like to remind you all that, as well as registering your dog at your local Ayuntamiento, regardless of breed or size, that the following dogs do require an additional dangerous-dog licence: Pit Bull Terrier, Staffordshire Bull Terrier,
American Staffordshire Terrier, Rottweiler, Dogo Argentino, Fila Brasileiro, Tosa Inu and Akita Inu. Getting your dangerous dog legalised involves a lot of red tape and some rather unusual processes, but it is, quite simply, the law. Please don´t let the complexities put you off. If you truly love your dog you will want to protect and safeguard its future, as well as do everything within your power to avoid any sort of tragedy. The information was kindly supplied by Marion of the Accion del Sol dogs’ refuge at Grana-
dilla. She would be happy to explain anything you don´t understand if you phone, visit or email. You will see from our list which breeds are classified as potentially dangerous and need a special licence. They are subject to strict controls such as needing to be muzzled when being walked (and only one at a time), and only being owned by someone over 18 without a police record. You might think you would never be stopped, but the police everywhere are being more vigilant about this problem, and do conduct spot checks. You first step is to go to the SAC office at your local town hall, and request a form known as Solicitud de Inscripcion en el Censo de Animales Domesticos Y/O Potencialmente Peligrosos. You will need various papers such as your NIE and passport, as well as your dog´s microchipping evidence etc. The document is in Spanish.
Next, surprisingly, you have to take yourself to your local Centro Medico and have a medical. This will determine whether you are fit to keep a potentially-dangerous dog (eyesight, blood pressure, reactions etc), and why you want one. You will also be asked to complete a questionnaire with 60 questions. This is the main expense involved, and costs 53 euros. A visit to the Mapfre building in Santa Cruz is also necessary to obtain a certificate which will eventually be returned to you, confirming you have no criminal record. If you do, you will not be allowed to get a licence. You also need to take out a dog insurance with a minimum cover of 120,000 euros (on your house insurance or a separate policy), and to sign and complete another form from the SAC (Peticion de Antecedentes Penales de Registro Central de Penados y Rebeldes).
Eventually, you take all the papers (microchipping document, inoculation verifications etc) back to the SAC, and you will receive a
preliminary certificate. Subject to all the paperwork being correct, your licence will be issued a month or so later.

KIMBERLEY Adshead
A special kind of love... KIMBERLEY Adshead absolutely loves her life here in Tenerife. She loves her role in The Sound of Musicals, and she loves working in her partner’s bar. Yet Kim, as she is known, is a special kind of person with this one remaining desire: to care for handicapped children. “But, at the minute, I take every day as it comes,” she said. The 34-year-old was born in the South African city of Benoni, near Johannesburg. But, at the tender age of four months, she and older brother Rikki were taken by their parents, Bev and Gary, to their South Yorkshire home town of Sheffield. She added: “Mum was homesick in South Africa, and wanted to return to England. She had two small children, and wanted all her family around her.” Bev has been an ice-skating instructor in Sheffield for many years, and took part in competitions as a youngster. Kim and Lee, her partner of 12 years, are proud parents of 10-year-old daughter Kaci, who is following in her talented Mum’s footsteps. “She goes to Estrella’s Theatre School to study dancing, singing and drama,” she said, “and she’s taught by my fellow-cast-member, Tracey Cutting. “I’ve always been interested in dancing, and I was only three years old when I went to the Sharon Berry School of Theatre and Dance in Sheffield. I wasn’t very good at sport, but dancing’s different!” She once performed at Her
Majesty’s Theatre in London’s West End, and, after leaving school at 16, had various dancing jobs. “When I was 17, I left Sharon Berry’s and went to Phil Winston’s Dance and Theatre College in Blackpool for three years, during which time I was in a pantomime in Somerset,” she recalled. “I spent three days each week in Blackpool, and went home for the rest of the time. I studied at the college for my modern and ballet teaching exams, and I’ve got all my teaching qualifications.” She also reached the finals of the theatre-dance competition for girls, Miss Dance of Great Britain, held annually at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. She added: “When I left college I kept dancing, and performed in clubs. “I also worked for a radio station, and whenever they did a live broadcast from a park, for example, we would put on a dance display for everyone to watch.” Just before her 21st birthday, Kim spotted an advert in The Stage, the popular, weekly paper covering the entertainment industry. “There was a small article about some auditions being held in Tenerife for a dancer to work in a hotel for eight months,” she said. “I made contact, got the job and came straight over, 14 years ago.” Since then, she has performed in several dance groups, including Hot Ice with sisters Tracey Cutting and Mandy Scott, the latter forming the troupe several years earlier.
“Tracey suggested auditioning for The Sound of Musicals, and I have been with them for five years,” she said. “We all get on so well and have a laugh backstage, and I really look forward to the three nights a week when we perform. “I also work in Lee’s bar, the Britannia Inn, Playa Paraiso. I enjoy both jobs, because I get to meet a variety of people. Even though I have been dancing for many years, I love working in the bar, chatting with customers of different nationalities. “But I do miss my family, and I try to go back to England once a year. But they’re always over here anyway! It’s a different lifestyle in Tenerife; all the people are friendly and they always say hello as they go past. But in England you don’t always get that.” Kim added: “I get a little bit nervous when we’re performing something new, or if my boyfriend is watching. I don’t know why, because he’s seen me dance hundreds of times! “I love all the show, to be honest, and don’t have any favourite parts. When I’m working in the bar I’m on my own with the customers, but when I’m performing it’s different. There are five other people alongside me. “I don’t speak as much Spanish as I should. I work in an English bar and the show is in English so its hard to learn the language. But Kaci was born here, so she’s fluent.” As with all the cast of The Sound of Musicals, Kim is not
only an accomplished dancer, but a talented singer, too. “At school, one of my main subjects was music,” she said. “We had the option of group or private singing lessons, and I chose to be taught on my own. “I also had singing lessons at the dance school in Sheffield, and then at college in Blackpool a few years later.”
The Sound Of Musicals is on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 8pm. To book tickets (residents’ discounts available), please call 669 622 622

All done and dusted! APART from a few fixtures still to be played, the Direct Telecom Pool League 2016/2017 has come to an end, with all the important positions decided. In Division One Gaffers A, crowned champions a few weeks ago, finished their season against old foes Tenerife Hammers A at Palms Bar. Hammers, bidding to be the only club to inflict defeat on the champions, started well enough over the early frames, but Gaffers A kept pace and it was honours-even at the halfway point. Over the second period, the visitors sneaked into a lead, and, at 6-4, they looked likely to succeed. But Hammers A dug deep and took the final two frames for a point. The last few weeks had seen a battle for second place, and, with two games played on Tuesday night, Palms A are probably still celebrating now after clinching the coveted spot with two fine wins. The former league champions have enjoyed a resurgence this season and, with all players chipping in, they have proved hard to beat. First up for them was what seemed a regulation match with already-relegated Bluebell A. Palms pinged the traps and were soon 5-0 up, thanks to a couple of
seven-ball wins. Yet there is a feeling that Bluebell are better than the league table suggests, and this could be true. The Los Cristianos crew found some steel as they sneaked a couple of frames. But at 6-2 there still looked to be only one winner. Fortune favours the brave, however, and the Bluebell boys went for broke … 6-3 became 6-4 and then 6-5. The comeback was on! Or so it seemed. Chris, who has been ultra-consistent this year, got the job done for Palms A to seal a vital 7-5 win. This meant they would scoop second place with a game to spare if they could beat Dreamers. But the visitors, in sparkling form, have made a late charge up the table. They also spanked Palms 11-1 earlier in the season and they were soon 2-0 ahead. The Dreamers lads had a confident swagger, but, as is often the case in this league, the comeback was just around the corner. Palms raised their game and some fine finishes levelled the contest at 2-2. This eased any nerves, and they started to dominate. Dean put Palms in front, and when Simon, then Chris and Roscoe, all rolled in blacks, the game was up. At 6-2, JT had a

chance to seal the deal, only for Gav to keep the contest alive. But it was a brief stay because Simon took the next frame to give Palms the win which secured their return to the big time. Treehouse A were tipped as potential league winners, but a mid-season dip in form saw them fall off the pace. However, they can still finish third by winning their two outstanding games. They were in fine form this week against Palms Elite, and they needed to be because the visitors are a tough team to beat. It was a cagey affair, with both sides looking to take a foothold. Eventually, Treehouse A opened a slight lead, and, once ahead, they defended it well and got over the line for a hard-fought win. Phoenix Potters still have a chance to improve their current sixth position because they have a game remaining. But they also need results to go
for them because the teams above them also have catch-up games. They were away against Gaffers B, and over the first six frames, the teams were level. The home side then put their foot down and took a couple of frames to lead 5-3. Potters grabbed one back but Gaffers B then moved 6-4 ahead and had a point. But hopes of turning it into three faded as the visitors dug deep and secured a draw by winning the final two frames. Bluebell A were relegated last week after Terrace Roosters picked up a win against Phoenix Potters. But they gained a little revenge by beating Roosters 8-4. True, it’s not much consolation, but at least they ended the season on a high. Elsewhere, Terrace Bantams finished with a home win against Exiles A, and Rewind Rewired took bar-bragging rights as they finished their season with a win against Rewind

A. The Division Two title race was still to be decided, and James Hammers C just needed a win to be crowned champions. The only other side still in the running were Bluebell B, who had two games to play. They needed Hammers C to lose and then to win their remaining games to become champs! Hammers C, away at Splash Bar, were nervy from the start. It was a close match, and, over the first two sessions, neither team could make a breakthrough. The score was 4-4, which didn’t help the Hammers C nerves. Chris beat Ken to put Splash into the lead, only to see Macaroni hit straight back against Clive. This was heading for a draw - a result which wouldn’t help Hammers C Craig then beat Ken H to ensure a draw for Splash, which left Martin against James, the latter really needing the win. But the pressure proved too much for James. And when Martin rolled in the black, Splash had won, and attention now turned to Bluebell B’s game! They were at Hoppy’s A, who were after points to ensure they

didn’t end up with the wooden spoon! The home team were certainly up for the game and raced into a 3-1 lead. Bluebell B had their work cut out, but they have made a name for themselves with their famous comebacks. However, what followed was carnage as Hoppy’s Moysey, Kev, Roy and Jason all won their frames to give the home side the points,to avoid the dreaded spoon. It stopped Bluebell B’s title charge ,and, despite a loss, James Hammers C were Division Two champions! In the night’s final games, Exiles B hosted Picasso’s A, who had led the league for much of the season. But a form decline saw them fall away in recent weeks. The visitors got off to better start, and, once in the lead, they never looked back, easing over the line to end the season on a high. Well done to all the teams in what has, again, been a good season, with a massive improvement in our pool standards. Congratulations to Gaffers A and James Hammers C on their title wins, and good luck to all the teams in our forthcoming cup finals.

Gaffers hold their Nadas! WITH a few of the guys from Scruffy Macs looking on, Gaffers’ home tie with Pas O Nadas A became a real tussle, and an important one. The Nadas were hoping to narrow the gap at the top of Division 1, but Gaffers’ skipper Terry fired in his fifth maximum, while Richard notched his 24th as the visitors held the trebles leg to seal a hard-fought draw. Scruffys have another free week tonight (Friday) and will, no doubt, be heading to Phoenix Bar as they
host Pas O Nadas in what looks like being a crucial match! Elsewhere, there were wins for Boothen and Exiles, while the Playboys earned a creditable draw with Spear Chuckers. Big winners in Division 2 were Bar 180 as Wayne notched his second 180 during a whitewash win over local rivals Emerald Lounge. The result could well cement their place in the top four, and possible promotion. We shall see! The Tavern, however, were pushed all the

way to a baconsaving trebles leg at Sundowners to square the match, while Palms Pool Bar narrowed the gap a bit with a 7-1 drubbing of Marilyns B. Two more teams were in seventh heaven, Picassos putting seven past Nauta Nomads
and Pas O Nadas B doing likewise to Ourplace Playgirls. Waterfall moved up to sixth with a 6-2 success over Marilyns A, and last-leg deciders came at Bar Leones, as Clouseaus held on for a tight 5-3 win, and Rood took the last point to tie with Legends.

LOOKING down on the rest of the Liga Endesa is a nice feeling for Iberostar Tenerife, who took over the leadership of Spain’s elite basketball league with a crushing 85-61 victory at Montakit Fuenlabrada. It started fairly evenly, but Tenerife crushed the home side in the second quarter 29-3, which must surely be one of their all-time best returns for one period. Scoring was solid throughout, with some unexpected names claiming the top honours. Will Hanley scored 11 points, just behind Tim Abromaitis, on 12. Keeping the powerful Real Madrid and Barcelona teams below them will be a tall

house, 5,000 crowd, will be hoping it is Tenerife’s time again. Only the bravest of punters would have considered backing them for two trophies.
But they gave themselves a great chance of progressing from the European Champions League quarter-finals with just a 69-66 deficit from Tuesday’s away leg at PAOK Salonica, in Greece. It was looking ominous when the hosts built a strong lead in the first three quarters. And, at times in the final quarter, the gap was 10 points. But a stubborn fightback left Tenerife with just three points to overhaul in the home leg in La Laguna on Wednesday (8th March). Scoring in Greece was led by Aaron Doornekamp (19 points), well-supported by Marius Grigonis (12).

Woeful, winless weekend
A POINT between the two Tenerife teams in Spain´s Primera division showed how tough it is at the top level. Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife brought back a point from a 1-1 draw at Espanyol, after going behind in the first minute.
The women hung in and were rewarded with an equaliser after 60 minutes, Slivia Doblado firing in a fierce shot from outside the box. But poor Tacuense continued their slide with a 5-0 home drubbing by Valencia. That leaves them rockbottom, and, isolated with few remaining games, relegation is looming large.

CD Tenerife
Goal-crazy at last By Colin Kirby FORGET the softly-softly approach to promotion … Tenerife kicked the doors in at Mallorca, overturning a 1-0 deficit with a superb four-goal spree. The home side were asking for trouble when they changed their usual redand-black for yellow shirts and blue shorts, the colours of Tenerife arch-rivals Las Palmas. A hint of mind games, perhaps, but with longserving Mallorca player Pep Marti now in charge of Tenerife, it made the win even more delightful. There was an element of good fortune about the winning margin, but the harder you work the luckier you get. And this Tenerife squad have a massive work ethic. Raul Camara missed the game with injury, so Edu Oriol took over at rightback and put in a good performance. Midfielder Vitolo was at fault for Mallorca´s sixthminute opener, intending to head clear a dangerous ball, but, instead, flicked it across the goal to

Dominguez, who headed home. Now it was a test of character for Tenerife, who went about their natural game, forcing a corner. The ball broke to Oriol, but his shot was high. Dominguez

was sniffing around for a second goal, but Jorge took the ball off him with a clinical intervention. Amath and Choco Lozano linked well up front, but the end-ball from Choco
wasn’t quite good enough. Yet Aaron almost scored a spectacular leveller, curling in a corner that was dipping under the bar until the home keeper punched it away. Tenerife are not used to trailing, but they kept calm and saw out the first half with Jorge mopping up any half-chances that came Mallorca´s way. Coach Marti pulled a master-stroke at the start of the second half, bringing on Tayron and Aitor Sanz for Omar and Oriol. And the payback was instant. Tayron drilled in a cross from the left, Choco put pressure on defender Raillo, who turned the ball into his own net. Four minutes later Aaron hit one of the goals of the season, cutting in from the wing and curling a perfect shot over three defenders and into the top corner of the net for a 2-1 lead. Tenerife were now purring, spreading the play to carve open their opponents. Jorge showed his attacking skills to send in a cross
from the right, which was headed down and into the goal by Amath. There was only going to be one winner now! Choco´s hesitant touch in front of goal spared Mallorca, and he then went off with cramp as Carlos Ruiz joined the party. The fourth goal was a bit of a gift. Vitolo was in the penalty box when he got a tickle from a defender. His dive was pure theatre, but the ref bought it and Aaron stroked the ball home from the spot. Mallorca fans, who were streaming out of the stadium, missed their sides three sturdy shots in the latter part of the game. Keeper Dani Hernandez dealt with the efforts calmly, and the last word came from Amath, who made a strong run before shooting wide. It will get harder now, because Tenerife are the inform side and everyone will want to burst their bubble. Tonight (Friday) could be the biggest party so far as Mirandes visit Santa Cruz at 8pm … with the Carnival in full swing!

Mauling for Marino Boxers’ superb night of action Santa Brigida 3 CD Marino 0
IT couldn’t have been much worse for CD Marino, their short journey to Adeje ending in a comprehensive defeat, with plenty of problems thrown in. They knew it was always going to be tough against the second-placed team in Group 12 of the Tercera Division. But after the previous week’s home win over Lanzarote, Marino were hoping to claw back a few points towards the top-four, play-off places. Santa Brigida took control with goals in the 22nd minute from Alvaro, and three minutes later from Santi, before a crazy second
half. Marino’s Bamba was sent off just after the restart for a second booking, Santa Brigida taking advantage to add a third goal before one of their players was given a straight red. With both sides back to level numbers, there was always a chance of a Marino fightback. But with time running out, Josemi was also red-carded. The defeat drops Marino down to eighth spot in the division. But tomorrow, they have a chance to make partial amends in a rare Saturday home game, against Fuerteventura’s Cotillo, at Noon.
BOXING is thriving in Tenerife, as a crowd of around 500 demonstrated at Los Cristianos sports hall on Saturday night. Nine amateur bouts of three rounds and two pro fights over six rounds were filled with skill, determination, and a refreshing respect for the sport and opponents. First up was Pablo Luis, who survived an early tumble to grind down Joel over the three rounds for victory. The second match-up saw Raul narrowly defeat Adrian of home club Real Boxing. Each winner was awarded a trophy, with a medal for the runner-up, as well as appreciative applause from the crowd. The next contest didn’t get beyond the first round, Chiky launching straight into opponent Sandro and decking him with a fierce combination of punches. Sandro, clearly dazed, recovered in time to collect his medal, and a consoling hug from Chiky. Head protectors were worn in the next fight as both fighters were under 18, and Kilian, a late substitute, saw off Diego Medina after a tight contest.
One of the closest and hardest-fought bouts brought together home favourite Mihail, of Real Boxing, and Alberto Arley. These two really slugged it out and either would have been a worthy winner. But Mihail just shaded it. Saul and Cotu also gave their all before Saul got the nod to lift his trophy after a little wobble from Cotu. Everyone loves a showman, and Jerday played to the crowd when he entered the ring for the next fight. He showed he was made of stern stuff, surviving a small cut above the eye to clinch the contest.
Melissa Tudge and Patri showed they could match the men with their skill and all-action style. It was a very even bout, with Patri just getting home. The two big professional fights featured fighters in the heavier weight brackets and the contests were so different. First on was Jacobo (Caco) Barreto, from Anaza, against Romanian Siliviu Costea. It was a short contest because Caco floored Siliviu in the first round with a thunderous punch. The final clash went the sixround distance as Adasat (Toro) Rojas took on late replacement Ullrich, of Cameroon. Ulrich was a bit slower than Adasat, but he was tough and solid and took everything thrown at him. Adasat wasn’t sure what to make of him at first and had to use all his ring-craft to alternate tiring body punches with head shots, which, he hoped would bring a knockout. At the finish, both fighters had been pushed all the way, but Adasat clinched it because of his higher workrate and more adventurous approach.
