BUILDING company Sacyr, after being sacked from the new South Hospital site in El Mojon, Arona, now face a breach-of-contract court case by the Canarian Health Department. The Spanish firm downed tools after losing a demand to be paid more money, having under-priced its initial tenderwinning bid. Continued on Page 3

Hospital builders sacked
Continued from Front The prestigious Spanish, multi-national organisation, one of the country’s largest construction firms, was contracted to build the hospital’s final stages, Phase III, comprising four operating rooms, three labour-and-delivery rooms, and a new ward, after a morethan-attractive offer to the Canarian Government’s Health Department. The Department was seeking bids of nearly 10½m euros for the work, to complete the hospital’s full range of facilities, hopefully, in 30 months. But Sacyr’s bid just under 8m euros, and its pledge to finish the work in 19 months clinched the deal. The new project, which began at the end of June, should have been completed by March 2018. Yet builders stopped work several weeks ago after Sacyr called for an increased budget. However, the contract was terminated after “unsuccessful” negotiations, in which the Health Department (Sanidad) stuck strictly to the original, legally-signed
deal. Sacyr has admitted that its own costing calculations were incorrect, adding that it would have been impossible to carry out the work for the agreed sum, “not even by making adjustments in the materials and design”. The alternative, said the company, would be to abandon the job, and that’s exactly what it has done. “There has been no work here for weeks,” said a regular visitor to the complex, also known now as El Mojón Hospital del Sur. And the Canarian health authority appears to have a strong, breach-of-contract case. Lawyers from several local administrations have explained that, should Sacyr not comply with the contract, “in practice, it risks paying compensation to the Health Ministry”. A spokesman added: “It could exceed half-a-million euros because of the damage caused by the company not complying with the work contract. “That had been established, and the terms and the amount tendered by Sacyr
allowed the firm to win the competition, which was contested by several other companies. “These companies lost the tender because they were not able to compete with the offer from this company, which has great prestige and weight within the world of construction.” Rosa Dávila, the Canarian Government’s Finance Minister, is fully behind Health Minister Jesus Morera, saying: “The decision to terminate the contract is correct because we cannot tolerate this behaviour. “The priority is to finish building the hospital, but we will not be blackmailed. Sacyr did not act ethically with the rest of the companies that went to tender.” And the Finance Minister supports the building work going to tender again. “It can be done quickly, so that we do not extend the deadline,” she said. “Companies should be fined for such bad practice, and, I cannot understand how, months after winning tender, the company has
this problem, which affects us all.” The hospital, first mooted more than two decades ago to alleviate pressure on the “social” hospital in Santa Cruz, has had nothing but ill luck since the work begun. Project after project has been abandoned for one reason or another. Two years ago, however, all seemed rosy at the El Mojon site, and the hospital actually began operating, with service departments such as Outpatients, Rehabilitation and Radiology opening in 2014. On 8th July this year, it opened “officially”, and in late August came the first 49 hospital beds for acute, short-stay patients, along with the intensive-care activity. This relieved some of the burden on the Hospital Universitario Nuestra Señora de Candelaria (known commonly as the Candelaria hospital). It also eased the problem of patients having to travel to Santa Cruz for treatment. South Hospital had also expanded its range of medical specialities and
diagnostic functional tests, enhancing the number of consultations. The immediate result was a sharp decline in the number of patients using Tenerife’s main Santa Cruz hospital for non-private patients. Official figures showed that from April 2015 to April 2016, the South Hospital had more than 157,000 physician visits and conducted 27,000 test and procedures. In the Day Hospital, there were 1,801 treatments for patients who would normally have had to travel to Santa Cruz. According to the Health Ministry, patients in the South received 82,484 physiotherapy sessions. And there were impressive numbers of those using the facilities for specialised medical care in the field of Mental Health, with almost 23,000 consultations. Everything looked so rosy for the new hospital those handful of weeks ago. Now, though, a big question mark hangs over the final completion date of what must surely be the most important building in the South.

Berlin’s a fair place for top tourist deals
ADEJE’S tourism team are now in Germany for the important Berlin International Tourism Fair (ITB), which began on Wednesday and runs until Sunday. Councillor Ermitas Moreira said: “To be in Berlin is hugely important for us, which is why, this year again, we’ve gone there to consolidate our position as an excellent destination. “Alongside London and Madrid, it is one of the most important tourism trade fairs worldwide, and ITB is vital to German and North European tourist sales.” The Canarian Government and Tenerife Tourism, the tourist umbrella organisation to which Costa Adeje belongs, both believe the German market is one of the best in terms of advance-bookings. Last year’s figures also show that German tourists accounted for 42 million
THE mastermind behind Gürtel, a corrupt business network that operated across six Spanish regions between 1999 and 2005, is ready to return around 22 million euros stashed in Swiss bank accounts, according to legal sources.
Francisco Correa (pictured), head of the Gürtel network, has already authorised the transfer of 2.2m euros to Audiencia Nacional, Spain’s central high court, where he is currently on trial for crimes ranging from embezzlement to bribery of public officials. Correa has also authorised a Valencia court to repatriate 272,000 euros after judges there recently sentenced him to 13 years in prison in a regional offshoot of Gürtel. In fact, Correa will be standing trial on and off for the next four years at the very least. That’s because he still has at
overnight stays, which was an 8% increase on 2014. And indications are that this summer, Tenerife can expect 3.6m German visitors, a rise of almost 10%. Costa Adeje, forming part of the Tenerife Tourism party, will also be promoting its particular charms.
Moreira said: “We have to continue promoting our top range of hotels, the excellent climate, security, and parallel offers in leisure, beaches, etc. “These are our strengths. The German market and, in general, the North European tourist, is quite demanding, always on the
look-out for better offers, and, these days, greener alternatives. And Adeje has much to offer!” During the event, Adeje will be meeting with tour operators such as Thomas Cook and TUI, and with airlines, in talks to increase the number of seats flying to and from Tenerife.
Spanish Godfather bids 22m euros for damage limitation
least six more hearings to go as the sprawling Gürtel case finally reaches the courts after a five-year investigation. With nearly 200 official suspects, it has become the largest pre-trial probe in modern Spanish history, and has been broken up into sections to facilitate the investigation. The main trial began on 4th October last year, at the Audiencia Nacional, with 37 people on the dock. The Gürtel network was,
allegedly, run by Correa (whose surname translates as Gürtel in German), who cultivated relationships with PP officials, offering them gifts in exchange for government contracts in public works and event organisation. At the height of his power, Correa went by the nickname of Don Vito, after The Godfather character. Correa’s decision to unblock his millions at Crédit Suisse means the money can be returned as soon as the courts request it. Otherwise, these transfers would have had to wait until all the rulings against Correa become final, with no more appeals, which could take years. Correa’s goal now is damage limitation, to secure sentence reductions by co-operating with prosecutors and returning
his concealed fortune. Yet the 22m euros might not even cover the entire amount of civil liability which, ultimately, will be demanded of him as the convictions add up. The Gürtel chief, arrested in 2009, served nearly four years in preventive detention. And, following his recent conviction in Valencia, he was remanded in custody after being declared a flight risk, although that sentence can still be appealed. The so-called Gurtel case has electrified Spain for years, since it was exposed by a civil servant in a Madrid suburb. All the ongoing cases against Correa add up to a combined jail term of over 200 years if he’s found guilty. No wonder he wants to push the boat out!
No vets involved in the dog-fights
MARÍA Teresa Castro, VicePresident of Tenerife Veterinary Business Association, is adamant that no vet or veterinary clinic in Tenerife was involved in Guimar’s illegal dog-fighting. Police smashed the horrendous network recently, and the vet, said to be under suspicion, has not been charged with any crime. Ms Castro said: “The veterinarian who appears in the investigation has been related to the case, but not involved. “Some anti-biotic prescriptions of his were found, prescribed to a dog who belonged to a client of his.” As for the state of the dogs seized on the island just three weeks weeks ago, Ms Castro said that none of the 235 dogs rescued had been put down. And though they had not shown signs of aggressive behaviour, she said they must all be attended by an animal-behaviour analyst for their well-being.
Jose’s Trump protest
JOSE Andres, said to be America’s favourite Spanish chef, has led a protest against newly-elected President Donald Trump. The 47-year-old Spanish immigrant to the US (above) closed five of his Washington DC restaurants as part of a national “Day Without Immigrants”. His protest, aimed at Trump’s stance on immigration, was made to demonstrate how much of American business and daily life depends on immigrant workers. Andres (pictured), is already involved in a multi-million lawsuit with the President, having pulled out of plans to open a restaurant inside the Trump Hotel in Washington DC because Trump referred to Mexicans as “rapists”.

How sea-going drug scam was scuppered GUARDIA Civil officials have released all their information concerning Operacion TeneguĂa, in which seven people were arrested last week for smuggling hashish on a fishing boat. Two more people, the ringleader and his righthand man, were were both arrested later in Los Abrigos, thanks to surveillance set up by the Guardia Civil to intercept them. The exact weight of narcotics seized was 1,753kg of hashish, and those detained were aged between 18 and 35, of Spanish and Moroccan nationality. They were charged with drug-trafficking and belonging to a criminal organisation. It was one of the biggest drug hauls in recent years in Tenerife, and one of the most important busts made in the Canary Islands. The probe began when the
criminal network, based here in the South, was detected, using fishing vessels. It was a method unheard of in the Canaries. The fishing boats were meeting another vessel from Morocco and switching the drugs over, 30 miles south
of Los Cristianos port. They then received directions from the two men on land for a safe place to dock on the Tenerife coast. Now, however, a criminal network dedicated to introducing large quantities of hashish in fishing boats
from Morocco - a method not seen before in the Canaries has been dismantled. Morocco had long been a source for hashish making its way to the Canaries and beyond. But this major supply route for drugs has now come to an end.

Taxi dispute over
THE new, approved taxi tariffs for Santa Cruz Municipality came into effect on Tuesday, signalling the end of a bitter dispute between the Town Council and the Association of Taxis The deal, also agreed with the Canarian Government’s General Directorate of Trade and Consumption, is equivalent to the urban and interurban tariffs. That means a taxi fare will increase from 2.35 euros to 3.15 euros per kilometre, and an average 2km fare within the urban area will increase by around 20 cents, according to the Council. Taxi owners will have to visit an ITV station throughout this month to adapt their taximeters.

Jobs hard to find THE jobless tally in the Canary Islands, which fell by 1,874 people in February, is 0.81% less than the previous month, leaving 229,900 still out of work. The Ministry of Employment and Social Security reported that, annually, unemployment in the Canaries went down
by 13,732 people in respect to the same month in 2016, which. Percentage-wise, meant a 5.64 % decrease. By gender, women continue to be the largest number of unemployed, with 124,529, while jobless men’s figures stand at 105,371. Behind them are those under-25, with 13,880 unemployed.
CC just fed-up with traditions
Violent crime increases HOTELIERS and business owners in the South of Tenerife, especially in Las Americas, are concerned about an increase in violent crimes over recent weeks. One hotelier said that clients, nearly always foreign tourists, returned frequently, saying they had been mugged, and violently assaulted by thieves after
refusing to hand over their valuables. The vast majority of these cases occurred at night, in the centre of Las Americas. Another hotel director agreed, adding that there were more and more intruders in hotel complexes, known as the “Romanian bands”. State police forces, who have been reinforced to protect the South against violent criminals, from Spain and other countries, are now confident they are combating the situation.
Hash haul at sea
FOUR suspected drug-traffickers were hooked by Guardia Civil naval officers, who seized 3,691kg of hashish from their boat off the coast of Andalucian city Algeciras. The officers were alerted by the suspicious-looking vessel, which sped away when the suspects spotted their boat. Four Moroccans were arrested, with police recovering 90 bundles of hash weighing 2,412 kilos. In a second incident hours later, suspected traffickers threw 1,279kg of hash overboard before escaping.
Carnival fighter’s left with ear-ache A LINGERING spectator, who had been to Santa Cruz Carnival earlier on, was involved in a vicious fight with another man in the early hours of last Sunday, losing a large chunk of his left ear. Officers searched the area and found the piece of ear beside a pile of rubbish. But it could not be sewn back. It took place in Avenida Anaga, and both men were attended by National Police
officers until ambulances arrived. The affair started at 5.20am, when security alerted police to a huge fight. Within minutes, two teams of cops arrived, only to find just two men remaining, aged 25 and 30. The others involved fled, in all directions. Apart from the leftear damage, the man’s “opponent” was bleeding profusely from his mouth.
SIX months on from the Day Of Traditions in Arona old town, the Coalicion Canarias party members are still suffering indigestion over the 50,172-euro bill for the promotion of food, music, and drama. It was approved by Arona Council as cultural tourism, but the CC opposition have complained that the sums involved were excessive. Thousands of people, including many nationalities of expats and tourists, flocked to the historic centre from 10am-8pm on Saturday, 1st October. Food, costing 10,111 euros, turned out to be the most expensive part of the bill. Free Canarian food-tasting was featured on the day’s
programme, but it was part of a wide-ranging package. Plaza de la Paz had show-cooking all day, with chefs from local restaurants demonstrating traditional cuisine, via
a large close-up screen. Dancing punctuated the cooking sessions, and it proved to be one of the most popular attractions. For an hour or so midafternoon, tapas samples and wine, catered for by Acyre Canarias, were served to long queues to give them a taste of tradition. It served as a welcome starter for many, who then tried the nearby restaurants and bars. Second on the expenditure list was live drama, at 9,630 euros. The Burka Theatre group marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death by performing Romeo And Juliet through the streets, before reaching its dramatic climax at the Casa La Bodega. There were also folklore performances. Further costs, amounting to 3,185 euros, were for lighting, staging, and sound, plus 3,049 euros for the craft market’s 25 stalls.

Cabildo walks into Masca controversy
WALKERS, environmentalists, tour companies, and local businesses have been surprised to learn of proposals for Masca to limit numbers, and impose charges on visitors.
But Eva Garcia, Mayor of Buenavista del Norte, which features the historic hamlet and popular ravine walk, was, initially, left in the dark about the controversial plans. A report commissioned by the Cabildo, and delivered by environmental-tourism company Hidria, proposes a lid of 255 visitors a day and a maximum six-euro charge for non-residents. Jose Antonio Valbuena, Cabildo Councillor for Environmental Sustainability, says the measures would be to protect the famous ravine, the village, and its popular walk down to the sea, from saturation and increased parking. When the news broke, the Mayor tried to contact the Councillor that morning to hear it first-hand, but
couldn’t get hold of him. So far, there has been hardly any positive reaction to the plan to make Masca the second walking trail in Tenerife to charge walkers. Adeje’s Barranco del Infierno took the plunge two years ago. There is a two-month period of consultation to gauge reactions. But even then, the logistics of controlling the steep roads into Masca village and the beach access,
A ‘weaker women’ accuser hits nerve
JANUSZ Korwin-Mikke, a right-wing Polish MEP, got more than he bargained for when he stood up in the European Parliament a few days before International Women’s Day and criticised working women. “They must earn less than men because they are weaker, smaller and less intelligent,” said the man who has, in the past, been suspended for calling immigrants “excrement”, and for making a Nazi salute in the chamber. Spanish left-wing MEP Iratxe Garcia-Perez responded immediately, saying: “I am here to
defend all European women against men like you.” This tetchy exchange might have been the end of the matter, but things are unfurling because Antonio Tajani, newlyappointed President of the Parliament, has been urged to investigate Korwin-Mikke for his comments. It is a Parliament requirement that members respect each other, and do not offend or insult others during debates. And if found guilty, the Polish MP could be reprimanded, fined or even suspended.

at the lower end of the fourhour walk, will produce many challenges. The new figures are based on official estimates of one million visitors to Masca each year, with just 100,000 taking the muscle-testing hike in the shadow of 600m-high rock formations. And the flow of walkers would be slowed to a trickle by the limits of 15 per hour from the beach end, and 15 every half-hour from the village. Walks would start from 8am-
2pm, with a 6pm closure, and other controls would include no children under-10. A sliding scale of prices is planned to give Tenerife residents free access, and a 15% discount for those between 10-16 and the over-65s. And entry to the visitors’ centre and museum would be included in the charges. Tour companies and firms in Los Gigantes and Santiago del Teide are concerned that changes will slash the number of tourists
converging on bars and restaurants at each end of the route. And walkers are worried that changes might lead to charges for other Tenerife walks. Hidria has recently received a Cabildo contract, suggesting that other Tenerife areas might also face big changes. Its website describes the project as “characterisation of a network of ecological corridors”. Ronald Bauer, manager of Sun Holidays Masca Trekking, who has been running trips since 1993, has a deep understanding and love of the area. “I can´t see why they need to make the changes,” he said. “There are about 300 people a day doing the ravine, and, maybe, a few arriving independently can be a problem. “The organised groups always advise them about respecting nature and being careful, and we have 150 pairs of walking shoes and sticks. We also insist the walkers are properly prepared.” He added: “Car-parking in Masca is a problem because there are only about 50 spaces, and it’s a bit of a free-for-all. “Maybe they could have one-hour parking limits for those who just want to dip in to see the views and carry on their way; or maybe have more parking a little further away, with coaches and taxis dropping-off and pickingup. “But these new plans will increase prices and be very hard on the bars and restaurants down in Masca.” The biggest problem would be check-points to control the flow of people. The Cabildo’s scheme calls for one at each end of the walk and one in the middle. But it is not clear where they will cut off the main roads leading in. Two months of consultation should produce some strong opinions, and, hopefully, the Cabildo will remember to keep Buenavista del Norte’s Mayor in the loop.

‘Human-Tower’ man is crushed A MEMBER of a “human tower”, aged 51, died and two others were injured when they were crushed by a metal structure at the team’s training room in Tarragona, Spain. Police said the accident happened when the three were dismantling the metal training structure, which had been supporting a safety net. The local Town Council said in a statement that it had been a “terrible accident” and offered condolences to the family of the dead man.
Human-Tower building is a traditional Catalan competition, involving people climbing on to each other’s shoulders, with youngsters hanging on to the outside, to create the tallest, most complex construction. Towers can reach up to 10 humans, but are deemed successful only if they can keep their balance and get down again without any falls. The main Human-Tower competition in Tarragona takes place every October, attracting thousands of spectators.
We’re still in a Carnival mood
HAVING said farewell to the Santa Cruz Carnival, the uplifting, anythinggoes atmosphere continues here in the South. Los Gigantes Carnival, split over two weekends with a farm theme, begins tonight (Friday) with the Carnival Queen election, from 9pm on the church plaza stage. Tomorrow (Saturday) features a Children’s Carnival with special entertainment and fun, from 11am-5pm. That’s followed by a dance festival with outrageous costumes, going on late into the night. Sunday (12th March) sees all eyes on the Coso parade, with floats and marching bands, from midafternoon. It all begins again next
Friday (17th March) with the Burial of the Sardine ceremony from early evening, starting at La Pescadora and working its way into the heart of the village. The curtain descends next Saturday with a day-long Carnival from noon, in and
around the church square. The Los Cristianos Carnival, which starts next Friday (17th March), continues until Monday, 27th, and the running order is on our What’s On page. Meanwhile, planning has already begun for next year’s Santa Cruz Carnival, which attracted record figures of over 1,000,000 visitors this year. Voting has started to select the theme at www. carnavaltenerife.com and the closing date is the end of March. The theme is needed early so that the dancers and groups can design and work on their costumes. The choices are: New York, Greece, The West, La Sabana, The Renaissance, Fantasy, Carnival On Ice.
Different bars for Mallorca big-wig THE judge heading an ongoing trial into police corruption on holiday island Mallorca, has ordered that the owner of some of the island’s biggest nightclubs be imprisoned without bail. Tolo Cursach, whose clubs include Pacha and Tito’s in Palma de Mallorca, BCM in Calvia, and the Megapark complex, has been taken into custody over a range of charges, including alleged murder, drugtrafficking, and corruption of minors. The tycoon is suspected of working in collusion with corrupt local police chiefs to benefit his own businesses, while damaging those of his competitors. Two senior members of Cursach’s business group, Tolo Sbert and Antoni Bergas, have also been detained, although all three arrests were considered to
be a precautionary measure only. In fact, Sbert has also been jailed without bail, while Bergas has been charged and released, though having his passport confiscated. The trio are accused of a swathe of crimes, which also include bribery, extortion, coercion, falsifying official documents, possession of firearms and issuing violent threats. Their arrests follow an investigation into the death of a former employee of the group, allegedly in possession of incriminating evidence regarding Cursach, according to Spanish media outlet 20 Minutos. All three men have refused to testify before a judge, after being been picked up last week as police also ransacked Cursach’s various properties and offices.

NEWS IN BRIEF Fruit thieves plucked
THEY were ripe for the picking, and Guardia Civil officers in Huelva, Andalucia, chose wisely when they recovered more than 600kg of stolen mandarins and 200kg of strawberries, valued at more than 1,100 euros. As a result, Five people were arrested during an operation to combat thefts from agricultural estates in the province. A road block on the N431 road (Gibraleón-Huelva) intercepted a vehicle, whose occupants had no documentation to prove the fruit was theirs. The officers soon identified the rightful owners of the goods and returned them. Now, buoyed by their success, Police patrols in the area have now been stepped up.

Dodgy driver halted
Out of pocket: the luckless El Carmen restaurant
A DRIVER caught on a radar in January doing 276kph in a 90kph speed-limit area on the N347 in Almeria, driving a Nissan GT-R, was jailed for four months, and lost his licence for three years. Although the defendant and his passenger both claimed the latter was driving, and that they had later swapped places, the criminal court judge decided this was untrue.
Dead woman found
THE body of a woman in advanced stage of decomposition was found on Sunday morning on the Los Silos coast, in north-west Tenerife. A resident walking in the area of Garajao raised the alert, and Guardia Civil officers and judicial police attended the scene. The Guardia Civil believe she could be the missing person reported in the last few weeks.
Women hikers saved
TWO female hikers, both aged 23, were rescued by helicopter in La Gomera after being stranded after slipping 20 metres down a slope in the El Cedro natural park, in Hermigua. Emergency services, which had been alerted, found them clinging to the branch of a tree on the edge of a high, vertical drop. One had fallen, and the other woman, who tried to help her, ended up in the same precarious situation. The Guardia Civil mountain rescue crew contacted an emergency helicopter, which carried them to safety at 4am after searching the area for hours in the dark. They were treated for exposure but had no injuries.
German drowns
A GERMAN tourist, aged 69, drowned in an apartmentcomplex pool in Valle Gran Rey, La Gomera, last Saturday. Paramedics, who confirmed he was in cardiac arrest, were unable to save him.
SPANISH police have arrested a 48-year-old Romanian, from Ponferrada, believed to be the ringleader of the “dine-and-dash” group. They have been running up restaurant bills of more than 12,000 euros in the northern province of León, then scarpering without paying, which sparked last week’s police probe. Two restaurants in the remote Bierzo region were hit by what is known in Spain as a simpa. The first incident involved 120 people, said to be at a Christening, who left without paying a 2,000-euro bill at El
Carmen, in Bembibre, on 27th February. A few days later it emerged that around 160 wedding guests had run up a bill of more than 10,000 euros at El, in Ponferrada, 20km away, and also disappeared without paying. The two restaurateurs, unable to provide police with licence plates, at least agreed that two of the group leaders were from Eastern Europe. El Rincón de Pepín owner Laura Arias said: “There were 160 of them and they all disappeared. Suddenly! Laura said the group owed 10,000 euros after paying a
1,000-euro deposit for what they claimed was a wedding celebration. And she was aware, from the photos, that the same people were responsible “After the banquet, there was a stampede as all the guests left the restaurant while the party was in full swing.” Antonio Rodríguez, who owns El Carmen, said a 900-euro deposit had been paid ahead of the lunch. But when he returned from the kitchen with a cake, the diners had left. “It was a matter of a minute, but they were organised and ran out in a stampede,” he said.
Fraudsters cost irate Brit a fortune over land scam
A FURIOUS Brit from Colchester, Essex, who was conned out of 92,000 euros in a Spanish land scam 11 years ago, is still awaiting the return of his money, despite a court order. Neil Riddoch, 58, is furious that two men found guilty of fraud, over the sale of a nine-hectare plot, have not been made to pay any of it back. To make matters worse the fraudsters, in Carataunas, near Orgiva in Granada, have not spent a second behind bars, despite avoiding a custodial sentence after agreeing to pay up within 18 months. The issue is a “continuing nightmare” for businessman Mr Riddoch,
who was scammed by the pair in 2006. “The Spanish judicial system is a disgrace,” said the Essex man, who owns London printing company Colour Fast World. “It’s ridiculously slow.” Following a long, drawn-out saga, Granada Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that the pair must pay him back by 2015 to avoid jail. “They were convicted four years ago, but I’ve not
received a penny,” added Mr Riddoch. “I’ve almost given up, yet it could have bankrupted me. “The only money I’ve received is 10,400 euros in court costs, which isn’t part of the 92,000 I’m owed. “They own a company, so I just don’t understand why the judiciary didn’t freeze their assets until they had paid up.” Mr Riddoch, who had intended to build three houses on the land, realised he had been scammed when he was sued by its legal owner a decade ago. “He got money off me very quickly, but it only seems to work one way,” he said. “I’m not bothered now if they go to jail or not. I just want my money back. “Something needs to be done urgently to reform the system, to stop this from happening to other people.”

All-girl plane crew celebrate great day AN airline crew, comprising all females, operated an EasyJet flight from London Gatwick to Madrid on Wednesday, to celebrate International Women’s Day. The plane, captained by the world’s youngest female commercial captain, 27-year-old Kate McWilliams, included First Officer Sue Barrett and cabin manager Laura Marks. The aircraft was even named after renowned female aviator Amy Johnson. Happily, this week’s strike by French air-traffic controllers, which has caused the cancellation of many flights to and from Spain, did not affect this special EasyJet trip. Captain McWilliams said: “International Women’s Day is a global day, celebrating the achievements
of women. So we thought this all-female flight would be a fitting way to celebrate the achievements of the many women working in the aviation industry.” Laura was supported by three female cabin-crew members, Natasha Baker, Charlotte Carr and Nuria Belda Marco. There were also several female ground staff involved in various tasks, including boarding and guiding the aircraft away from the stand. Women have been involved in the aviation industry since the early 20th century, the first woman flying an airplane solo just
five years after the Wright Brothers. Then, of course, there was the iconic Amelia Earhart who, along with Amy Johnson, paved the way for the flight deck’s feminine touch. International Women’s Day global campaign coordinator Glenda Stone said: “EasyJet is to be applauded for the way it has truly embraced the very ethos of today.” Although the number of female pilots has increased, the ratio between male and female is hugely imbalanced, with only 3% falling into the latter category.

Not such a blast for bank thieves
A GANG said to have robbed banks in Malaga, Seville, Cadiz and Jaen, by using flammable gas to blow up cash machines, has been nailed. A joint operation between the Guardia Civil and Spanish National Police, led to six arrests. And investigators said the
gang members wore special suits to avoid being identified as they filled the machines full of explosive, acetylene gas. It was injected through rubber tubes before being detonated, via cables connected to a car battery. After the explosion, tools such as clubs, axes, chisels and screwdrivers were used to access the cash, before the robbers drove off in rental cars, hired with fake documents.
The gang, mainly from South America, is understood to have been responsible for at least eight robberies, including a recent heist in the Malaga region of Antequera. This was the third gang of crooks, operating by the same method in Malaga, to have been brought down in recent months. It followed the arrest of two British men in November 2016, and a second round of raids at the
Dad ‘murdered’ two young sons A DIVORCEE from Sevilla has been arrested in Southern Germany, on suspicion of killing his two young boys.
The lifeless bodies of the children, aged four and five, were discovered by their estranged mother. She had arrived to collect them at their dad’s home in Vaihingen an der Enz, a day earlier than planned. According to the initial autopsy report, they had suffered several, deep stab wounds to the chest and had been beaten around the head with a blunt object. The 38-year-old suspect, who tried to harm himself after the attacks, was identified as engineer Sergio Oliva, who moved to Germany from southern Spain in 2014. He is this week being held in the mental health department of a local
hospital, and has, so far, refused to co-operate with police. His ex-wife, who suffered a mental breakdown following her discovery, is in another area of the same hospital. The pair separated a few months ago, and the children were spending the weekend with their father, who had collected them from nursery a fortnight ago without telling their mum. She decided to go to his home around 8pm on Saturday after fearing that he would harm the boys. That’s because he threatened to copy Jose Breton at one point during the divorce proceedings. Breton was sentenced to 25 years behind bars in 2011 for the double murder of his children in Cordoba. Despite their mum’s chilling warning, however, a judge ruled that Oliva could to spend time with the boys at weekends,
Battery thieves not quite bright sparks
Plusvalía sparks a claims’ avalanche SOME 30,000 homeowners in the Canaries can now claim they were overcharged on plusvalía if, after February 2013, they sold a property at a loss. Town halls are facing an avalanche of claims, following the Constitutional Court’s 16th February endorsement that the seller of a property cannot be required to pay a tax that levies the increase in value when, in reality, this has not occurred. For example, a home purchased in 2005, say, for 420,000 euros, now has a market value of 350,000. If it were sold now, the capital gains would amount
to almost 10,000 euros, even thought the owner had suffered a 70,000-euro loss. The DAVIDE association, defending taxpayers, conducted a 2013 study on 40 of the 81 municipalities in the Canary Islands and found that 100% of cases were overcharged. In the specific case of Las Palma (Gran Canaria) and Santa Cruz (Tenerife), the
two provincial capitals, the total plusvalía overcharges would be about eight million euros. And it is estimated that town halls all over Spain have overcharged around 800 million euros. The Canarian Municipal Federation is holding a meeting today (Friday) to find a way to deal with the claims.
GUARDIA Civil officers in Granadilla have arrested four men for stealing car batteries, following an investigation that started in January. They became suspicious about various municipality burglaries, targeting commercial premises with items that could be sold at scrap-yards. Officers spoke with
several witnesses, who noticed that three wellknown local youngsters sold goods at two scrapyards. And they had been seen at night leaving a commercial premises, about which the owner later made a denuncia for a break-in. After the arrests, police recovered 10 car batteries.

Police spelling test just didn’t add up A SPELLING test, compulsory for people applying to become National Police officers in Spain, has caused outrage because some of the words selected were simply gobbledegook! The test angered several aspiring officers, who failed because of the odd choice of words. And poor results in the test, which formed part of the civil service exams taken by police trainees, led to a flood of complaints from candidates and the Unified Police Union (SUP). The words chosen are rarely heard in any walk of life in Spain, while many are obsolete and certainly never used by today’s police. The SUP said many of the words required to be correctly spelled “are never used in everyday police
work and are exclusively for erudite, academic circles”. They included terms such as “duunvirato”, an alliance of two police, political or military leaders or forces, such as in the Principality of Andorra, which comprises the French Republic President and the Diocese of Urgel. But, historically, the word is used to define a non-
magistrate public role in Ancient Rome, held by two men at once. It translates to English as “duumvirate”. Other words include champurrear, an archaic verb, which means to make a cocktail or mix of something, and which is in use today in Nicaragua only, where it means to take advantage of, or to obtain something with little effort.
Then there’s “yuyo”, meaning a weed, or any type of wild herb, medicinal or otherwise. But it is only ever used in Latin America, mostly in Argentina, Colombia and Ecuador. And what about “carriño”, meaning the mechanical traction part of an artillery carriage in ancient military history? It is easily confused by candidates as being an incorrect spelling of “cariño”, which means love or affection. Candidates were given 100 words and told to mark, in just eight minutes, whether they were spelled correctly or incorrectly. But they were not told how many were incorrect. In fact, there were 28 in all. But some of those words, which candidates were expected to mark as incorrect, included words “borrowed” from other languages, which do not have an official translation into Spanish.
“Apartheid”, “paparazzi”, “remake”, “byte” and “spot” would have lost applicants marks had they labelled them all correct. Few of the more obscure words were technical police terms, past or present, and, because of the high failure rate, the SUP called for National Police directorgeneral Germán López Iglesias to explain and be held accountable. To solve the problem, the Interior Ministry announced the results of the test would no longer contribute towards the final exam grade, meaning many applicants for the 2,700 police jobs, who thought they had been disqualified, are now back in contention. But Carlos Lobato Masa, head of training for Spain’s National Police, resigned just days after the Interior Ministry decided to scrap the test, in view of the controversy arising from the initial results.

Parents jailed for murdering baby THE parents of a new-born baby in Gran Canaria have both been sentenced to 15 years in prison for murder after letting the infant die. The jury at Las Palmas Courts, who found them guilty, heard that Sara M and Jacinto SH faced childbirth alone in the family home, despite it being a high-risk pregnancy. Competitors were challenged to create something that could accelerate inter-planetary, human evolution in a sustainable way. And the resourceful Malaga team came up with a model to study seed-growth on the moon. The winning submission will be sent to the moon in January 2018 with TeamIndus, an Indian company funded by Google.

They say it can lead to infections in the digestive system, reduced absorption of vitamins and even cancer of the oesophagus and stomach. One in three patients who takes Omeprazol regularly should not be doing so, say GPs. And although prescriptions for the drug have not increased in the last few years - quite the opposite, admits digestion specialist Dr Mercedes Ricote - it can be purchased over the counter. And that simple availability leads to many people taking it without medical advice. Dr Ricote, of the Digestion Working Group wing of the Spanish General Practitioners’ Society (SEMERGEN), says Omeprazol is one of the most-consumed, anti-acid drugs in Spain, both as a treatment for stomach acid itself, or taken prior to doses
of other medication, which can cause nausea and burning. The National Health Ministry says nearly 54.4 million boxes of Omeprazol were sold on prescription in 2013; then 53.6 million in 2014 and 52.3 million in 2015, showing that although fewer GPs are advising patients to take it, the drug is still being prescribed “excessively”. Dr Ricote added: “The point of Omeprazol is to protect the stomach against harsh medication, but the general public use it because they believe it makes them feel better, or that it stops the side-effects of drugs
Quick-thinking father prevents child kidnap
A FEMALE psychiatric patient, aged 49, was foiled last Saturday evening after attempting to kidnap a six-yearold boy from the daytime Carnival. The incident happened at around 6pm in the packed streets of El Pilar and Valentín Sanz. The child was in fancydress beside his parents when, suddenly, a woman dressed in plain clothes took him by an arm and tried to flee with him. The child’s father realised immediately what was happening and kicked the woman, causing her to trip and tumble over. At this point, friends of the parents held the
father back to prevent the situation from getting out of hand. Local Police were notified by Civil Protection volunteers, at the parents’ request, and the woman was taken to temporary police facilities in the Plaza del Patriotismo. She was able to provide identification, and proved that she was a psychiatric patient who had not taken her medication that day. The youngster’s parents, when told of the circumstances, decided against a denuncia, and the woman was taken to the Carnival Hospital to be medicated. She was recognised as a frequent user of the Municipal Shelter, and was free to leave later on because there was no denuncia against her.
altogether. “Some mistakenly take it as a solution for stomach acid, and many even do so to avoid feeling bloated and full before a heavy meal, or a drinking session, which is not what it’s for. “It’s not designed to be used as an occasional treatment for one-off incidences of acid; it is for when the patient suffers acid two or more days a week. And in that case, it will be prescribed as part of a continual treatment programme, but only when your GP sees fit.” Omeprazol abuse alters the Ph balance in the digestive system, which
can lead to infections such as salmonella. It can cause severe diarrhoea, and prevent crucial vitamins, particularly B12, from being absorbed. Also, patients who buy it over the counter to treat stomach acid instead of seeing their doctor are, effectively, delaying diagnosis of the real cause of their discomfort. And Dr Ricote warns: “Although rare, it could be as severe as gullet or stomach cancer. It’s not a frequent side-effect, but overuse of Omeprazol can lead to magnesium and calcium levels dropping, especially if taken for a long time, and this can be so severe that it leads to risks of fractures. “We’ve seen patients who have used the drug to excess and suffered broken hips, wrists and even vertebrae as a result.” Dr Ricote added that GPs need to try to “educate” patients about the correct use of Omeprazol, and pharmacists should quiz customers about why they are buying it to ascertain whether they really need it.
A golden result as dealers are caught AN extremely complicated money scam, which had a turnover of more than 50m euros, yielding profits of 1.5m, has been smashed by Guardia Civil officers, working alongside Madrid’s National Police. “High-Street” dealers in gold have to make significant payments to individuals selling scrap gold. And, using this as an excuse, a number of them were asking their banks to supply them with 500euro notes. But rather than use them to purchase gold, they were actually supplying the high-value notes to drug cartels in exchange for smaller denominations, charging a percentage of the transaction for their service. Investigators discovered that in just two years, banks had supplied notes to the value of 50,484,000 euros to these dealers. And, on the assumption that they charged just 3% commission, they will between them have made
a profit of 1.5m, which they then used in their companies to purchase gold and jewellery for scrapping. Once the drug traffickers had possession of the “clean” 500-euro notes, they were then passed to airline flight attendants, travelling on routes from Spain to Colombia, who smuggled the money into that country. But to the delight of the Guardia Civil and Madrid’s National Police, 26 people, including gold dealers and flight attendants, have been arrested following their in-depth investigation.

Taxman raid on Google’s offices GOOGLE’S Madrid offices were raided by Spanish tax officials last Thursday as part of an ongoing investigation, but the global internet company said it was co-operating with local authorities. A company spokeswoman said the company complied with fiscal legislation in Spain, just as it did in all countries where it operated, adding that the company was working with authorities to answer all questions. Yet the search is believed to be linked to an investigation into possible tax evasion. Google’s complex system of tax payments has, for several years, been under scrutiny by Spanish tax authorities, which suspects it could be reducing its tax burden by channelling some income through Ireland. Google faces other probes throughout Europe into its bewildering system of tax payments. The Spanish Tax Agency began probing Google’s tax affairs in 2011. The company’s Spanish affiliate was paying virtually no taxes, even declaring a loss
A BOY of 12, who ended up with bills totalling nearly 100,000 euros after signing up accidentally to a Google payper-click advertising service, has had his debts cancelled by the online giant. José Javier, a high-school student from Torrevieja, in Spain’s Valencia region, was one of a legion of young Spaniards hoping to make money from YouTube. On his home-made website, he chose advertisements that appeared alongside videos of his music group, Los Salerosos, which he posted on YouTube. Instead, Javier signed up mistakenly for the Google AdWords service, which
for the previous tax year. The company eventually agreed to pay an extra 1.9m euros on its 2007 and 2008 statements and the case was closed. The European Commission has also been investigating the tax affairs of Google, which is facing other investigations throughout Europe. Google’s Paris offices were raided last May by French
tax inspectors, who say the company owes 1.6bn euros. French prosecutors are trying to establish whether the Irish company through which Google funnels the majority of its European revenues does, in fact, control a “permanent establishment” in France. Google reached agreement with the UK tax authorities in January, agreeing to pay 172m euros in back taxes.
The US company also agreed that, in future, it would pay taxes there on the income it makes from advertisements taken out by companies based in the UK. Also last Thursday, Spain’s Tax Agency published a name-and-shame list of the country’s leading individuals and businesses, each of whom owes more than one million euros to state coffers.
No pay, José! allows people to people set up an advertising budget and pay only when their advertisements are clicked on. “I didn’t know what my son was up to,” said his mother, Inma Quesada. “He thought he was making money and not the opposite. “He wanted to buy instruments for the band and things like that, although he did tell his friend that if they got rich, they would have a mansion.” José was able to set up the Google AdWords service using a savings account his family had set up for him to cover future costs “like a driving licence”, said his mum, explaining that the company had asked only
for a name and an account number. Early last September, Google started to call in its debts, with sums demanded eventually climbing to 19,700 euros. José’s bank account, with a starting balance of just 2,000 euros, was already in the red, and the bank alerted his parents. At that point, they put a block on his account and sent the bills back to Google. This didn’t stop Google trying to charge another 78,000 euros to the account, but, after news of the case broke in the Spanish press, Google issued a statement saying that José would not be liable for the costs incurred. “We have analysed this case
and we haven’t received any money from the user,” said a spokesman “We are going to cancel the outstanding AdWords debt. It was all a mistake, and we believe he did it without thinking.” He added that many online services, including Google Adwords, had age restrictions,” but said the company was committed to ensuring families could use the internet in a safe way. Inma, an unemployed mother of three, whose husband’s a street vendor, said her son has been punished and will not be able to use his computer for some time. “My son didn’t know what he was doing,” she said. “Now he’s famous at
Among the personalities mentioned in the report, released that day, were former Barcelona FC footballer Dani Alves, motorcyclist Dani Pedrosa, businessman Mario Conde and former Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz. Respectively, Alves owes 1.3m euros, Pedrosa 7.85m and Sanz 1.2m. Conde, currently bailed on money-laundering and taxevasion charges, owes 9.9m euros. Two leading property companies, hammered by the 2008 collapse of the construction market, are also included: Reyal Urbis, which owes 368m, and Nozar, 203m. Spain’s leading football clubs, many of whom have run into problems with the taxman in the past, also feature on the list. Real Murcia owe 10.5m euros, Recreativo de Huelva, 13.5m and Racing de Santander 9.7. And basketball clubs Girona, Valladolid, and Estudiantes owe 10.1m, 3.2m and 1.7m respectively. Overall, the list includes 4,768 individuals and businesses, with a collective, total debt of 15.7bn euros. Many of the names were included on a list released in December 2015.
school, and his mother is on television. “I’ve told him that his actions have consequences, but he doesn’t seem to realise. He thinks nothing’s going to happen, but we are more realistic.” The boy’s parents have contacted a lawyer, but the Google response suggests he will not be needed. Meanwhile, lawyer Víctor Salgado stressed that minors do not have the power to contract services like Google AdWords, which would make a contract signed by a youngster like José null and void. In cases where parents had actually authorised their children to set up such a service, it would have to be shown that the parents had given permission to hand over bank-account details to the company concerned.

UNFORTUNATELY, they don’t exist in the hairdressing world, but, if they did, they would make our jobs so much easier. Magic wands are figments of the imagination, but some hair clients believe we have one tucked away at the back of the salon. We

with what is provided, which includes hair condition and texture, and your ability to look after your style at home. In the salon, we work with all sorts of images, from magazines to internet sites. This is just to give you, or us, a guide as to what the results of your cut/colour will be. It’s always better, when changing someone’s hair, to give an image of the predicted outcome. There’s nothing worse than pulling off the towel, and both the person, and the stylist, are in shock. If your consultation is done properly, and all

is explained correctly before work starts, there should be no nasty surprises. Make sure you have your turn to tell your stlylist how you feel before, and after, your hair has been done. It’s all about communucation between you and your hairdresser. If there’s any doubt about what is going to happen, ask well before the scissors have been picked up. So, until hair wands do exist, it’s all in your hands, and those of your stylist. Be realistic in your choices, and listen to your hairdresser. He or she should be your hair’s best friend.
Absolutely bag-u-lous!
By Carl Pattison
Tell me you don’t need a new one, that you have enough and can’t imagine finding one you just love. Handbags that is; that certain item all women want, and need to have just one more of on their arms. Handbags for women are more than just something to carry around your “stuff”. They are your comfort blanket and your must-have item to complement your outfit. So what is that certain thing that buying a new bag gives a woman? It’s like children in sweet shops; they can’t decide which ones to choose, and want all of them. Many women would rather buy a new bag than an outfit. You
can always jazz up an old outfit with a stylish new handbag. Even if they look expensive but aren’t, bags will make you feel a million dollars. Splash the cash on a designer one, and you’ll feel as though you’re the centre of attention. So if you’ve been tempted by one recently, forget the price tag if you can. Nothing can make
your day more than being the owner of a new “arm friend”. A new bag is always a pick-me-up, even if it’s not the most expensive one. This season’s musthaves are animal print and geometric patterns. The new black bag is metallic, and don’t forget that it must scream opulance, even if it didn’t cost a small fortune.
Your waist size equals health By Val Sainsbury THE size of your waist is a far more accurate marker of health than your weight, according to new research by university experts.
Doctors have, for decades, used body mass index (BMI) to work out whether someone’s health is at risk because of his/her size. Now, researchers say this measurement is misleading because it cannot distinguish between fat and muscle, which weighs much more. This means, for example, that wellbuilt, muscular athletes might be categorised as obese, even though they are extremely healthy. The BMI system compares people’s weight with their height. Those with a score of 18.5 or under are considered underweight, 18.5 to 25 normal and above 25 overweight, while over 30 is judged obese. But University of Wolverhampton researchers have devised a new measurement of waist-to-height ratio, which, they say, is a far more accurate predictor of heart-disease risk for both men and women. The system, calculated by dividing waist size by the square root of
someone’s height, was found, in a trial of 4,700 people, to be the best marker of cardio-metabolic health. Professor Alan Nevill, who led the study, said this was because waist size is usually determined by body fat, with little muscle around someone’s middle to confuse the findings. Belly fat is also known to be particularly dangerous because it wraps around vital organs in the torso. Prof Nevill added: “By dividing a person’s waist ratio by the square root of his/her height, we are able to give a reading that works for all people, independent of how tall or short they are.” His team have used the tool to devise a scale of waist-measurements for people of different heights. The scale, which applies to men and women, gives the waist threshold at which someone is at “critically high”, cardio-metabolic risk, putting them in danger of heart-attacks, strokes and diabetes. For someone of 5ft 2in, a 36in waist is harmful, whereas for someone of 6ft 1in, the danger point would be a 39in waist. “BMI is a measure of excess weight, but it cannot differentiate between muscle weight and fat weight,” said Prof Nevill. “Waist-to-height ratio as the best way of identifying whether someone is likely to develop heart disease.” But he did stress that
the findings apply to people of average fitness. His study established that those who do plenty of exercise, for at least 150 minutes a week, are at far lower cardiovascular risk, no matter what their weight. The research team, whose work is published in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports, tested 4,763 people on a treadmill, while monitoring their heartrates, oxygen-intake, blood-pressure, bloodsugar and cholesterol. They used these results to assess the health of their heart, giving each person a “cardio-metabolic risk score”. The scientists then calculated each person’s BMI and waist-to-height ratio. They found that waist-to-height ratio had a much stronger correlation to their cardio-metabolic score than the BMI measure. The findings echo a 40year study, published last year by researchers at Denmark’s Copenhagen University Hospital, which found that people with a BMI of 27, officially deemed to be overweight, had the longest life expectancy. Another study, carried out by Swedish researchers in 2009, found that women with four inches of extra fat around their waist were 15% more likely to suffer heart-failure, even if they were of a normal weight.

Food review: Gorilla Grill Pub & Kitchen, Torviscas
It’s a real Gorilla thrilla By Mel Faulkner I HAD a fabulous opportunity this week to sample the delights of the new, swanky “Gorilla Grill” in Torviscas, close to Puerto Colon beach and next to Bombay Babu. The restaurant is part of the Bombay Babu chain, known for its stunning, freshly-made, Indian food. Gorilla Grill is the new sponsor of my Oasis Fm radio show, so I am delighted to review it, especially as my work colleagues have been going every week. Parking is made easy because it’s under the La Niña hotel and shopping centre. Any excuse, girls, for a cheeky shop, shop, shop, and you can then treat yourselves to scrumptious food, made on the premises. When I arrived with two friends, the restaurant was packed full with a melting pot of all ages, from a mature couple enjoying a fry-up and cuppa, to a group of lads eating home-made burgers for a hangover cure. We were greeted by Verto, our cheeky waiter, for whom nothing was too much trouble. Cocktails were outstanding and inexpensive, professionally made by the manager, Simone, another
cheeky chappy. We decided to try everything, and actually shared the starters. I had the zucchini
twirls - zucchini and asparagus with fresh veg and a tomato sauce - which proved outstanding. I would never order anything like that usually, but it really was delicious. One friend had the hot buffalo wings with BBQ sauce … very tangy and loads of spices to tempt the palate. In fact, it was all so delicious that the three of us tucked in heartily. The mains’ dishes
were also shared, even though we mixed meat with fish. I ordered fillet steak, with Roquefort sauce, cooked to perfection, I like it medium and no blood, and it was perfect. One friend had Penne and salmon with divine portions, just enough to make you feel full but not stuffed. The third dish was a duck burger. We’d never heard of them before, let alone tasted one, but the general consensus was that it was absolutely outstanding, with caramelised onions, salad, home-made chips and garnish. Needless to say, we all tucked in and it didn’t last long. The Gorilla Grill boasts that all its meat is of the highest standard, and minced on the premises to guarantee best results. The sweets came recommended and we had the cheesecake, not too sweet but beautifully creamy, in addition to the tiramisu, a legendary, coffee-flavoured Italian custard, again not too much on the sweet side, with a gorgeous taste sensation. Gorilla Grill shows all the televised major sports events, and you can even have a good old fry-up in the mornings to get you
going. This restaurant will almost certainly thrive because it has the same pedigree, the same high standard as the Bombay Babu restaurants, and everything is cooked fresh on the premises. Check out the “Gorillagrilltenerife”
Facebook page, their web site gorillagrill. co.uk for all the latest or just pop along to enjoy its daily cocktails, their fine food and even have a “selfie” taken with Digger the Gorilla. For reservation call 922 71 28 36

Cats Welfare News
Cats and children For many parents, the idea of kids and cats together is absolutely natural. For others, though, it’s a scary thought that may result in the family cat getting a oneway ticket to being rehomed. Don’t get rid of the cat Many expectant parents panic about litter trays and toxoplasmosis. If you’re pregnant and have to clean the litter tray, practise good hygiene and common sense. Wear disposable gloves and wash your hands. The risk of toxoplasmosis is actually greater with improper handling of raw meat, or using the same cutting board for vegetables/fruit that you use for meat. Speak with your vet for more information. Prepare in advance Use your “think like a cat” perspective; major changes are confusing.
Prepare your cat by starting the nursery early and gradually. Get him comfortable with baby equipment being around, long before the newborn arrives. The mother-to-be can start wearing baby powder and lotion to help the cat become familiar with the scent. If you have friends with babies, do some training sessions where a friend visits with her baby. Create escapes The ability to escape
and have access to kid-free zones will be crucial when the baby becomes mobile. Your cat needs to be able to climb up to an elevated area that is out of reach of baby’s fingers. If your cat can watch a household activity without being the centre of it, he’ll feel much less stress. Adult supervision Babies and young children should be supervised when in contact with cats. A cat may naturally find the cot a cosy place to
nap, so make sure the nursery door remains closed. Even the mosttolerant animal may react defensively if he feels under attack, or experiences sudden, unexpected pain from having a tail yanked, or fistful of hair grabbed. Monitor health It's easy to forget that kitty didn’t get flea protection and is now covered in fleas, or he didn’t get his nails trimmed. Write notes on the calendar to remind yourself. Animals in pain are more likely to react defensively when touched. Maintain a routine Cats don’t like change, so, to avoid adding extra stress, this isn’t the time for your cat to become an afterthought. Introduce puzzlefeeders as a way to incorporate extra playtime when you’re busy. The cat is an important member
of your family, and he deserves to continue to receive the care and attention he’s used to. Teach children how to pet and interact A toddler needs to pet with an open hand. Take the time to teach children how animals should be handled, and how to read body language, so they know when a cat is giving distance -increasing signals and should be left alone. Teach compassion It’s important to teach compassion and how animals have feelings, and experience pain, fear, confusion and, of course, love. Dressing the cat up in doll clothes and stuffing him into a pushchair may make for a funny picture, but it can be very stressful and frightening for the cat, and can lead to aggression. Let your children see how much you love and
care for your pets, and you’ll be paving the way for them to do the same. Adoptions All our cats awaiting adoption can be seen on our website at w w w. c a t s - w e l f a r e tenerife.com/pets. K9 Animal News
Ruby goes to Wales IT was love at first sight for K9 beauty, Ruby, and holidaymaker, Cath Davies. During her stay on the island at the start of the year, she came to the refuge to walk our dogs, and immediately fell in love with sweetnatured Ruby. She decided, there and then, to do whatever she could to get Ruby home to Wales. But where to start? She talked it over with K9 kennel manager, Hazel Eames, and they agreed that “where
there’s a will, there’s a way”. Cath started a Just Giving page to help raise the money needed for the expensive flight to the UK, and, with generous donations and sponsorship for a 100-mile cycle ride in the Welsh hills, the £570 target was soon met. Two weeks ago, Ruby flew to Gatwick where Cath and fiance Wayne anxiously awaited her arrival. It was a happy reunion before a car journey to South Wales.
Jet-setter Ruby took it all in her stride, and has settled in very well and very quickly with her lovely new family. She loves the outdoor lifestyle, and, while it’s ever-so-slightly colder than here in Tenerife, she has a choice of cosy jackets and coats to keep her warm! Cath says: “K9 is an amazing place, with all the hard work the people do to give the animals the best chance at life as possible. We fell in love with Ruby on our
holiday to Tenerife, but never thought it would be possible to get her home to Wales. “But with the help of K9, and the generosity of people who donated, we were very lucky to raise the money for her flight. Now she’s here, she’s settling in really well and we will give her a life of cuddles, long walks and a soft bed to call her own.” Aren’t happy endings lovely?! 10th March - 16th March 2017 Interview by Val Sainsbury
nathan JOnes Oh, what a night... WHEN guests are greeted as they arrive at The Sound of Musicals, there will always be the odd one who just doesn’t want to be there! And cast member Nathan Jones never fails to be surprised by what happens next! “A guy turned up who was adamant that he didn’t like musicals,” he recalled. “But he ended up standing on his chair playing an air guitar during the Queen part of the show, and said afterwards: ‘What a great night’. “On another occasion, a guy looked at his partner and said: ‘She made me come. I don’t want to be here.’ Yet he really loved it. They came back that week and have been six times altogether.” The 41-year-old, born in Nottingham, puts his boyish looks down to having a younger wife. “Jennifer keeps me young,” he said with a smile. “But the kids don’t! They just take the money that’s in your wallet, and wake you up early! “She works as a receptionist at Wingate School, where her parents, Anthony and Beverley Barnett, are teachers. They came to live in Tenerife when she was seven, and she went to the school as a child. “In a relationship you have to be best friends, and that’s what she is! “My parents, Jill and Tony, were entertainers. They used to be in The Chantells, a lateSeventies pop group, and Mum also had an acting part in the TV series, Boon.” Nathan’s father, who appears as singer Tony Lee, still does his Gene Pitney tribute act. After the American died in 2006,
Tony took his place and performed with the Gene Pitney UK orchestra, led by Gene’s Musical Director, Maurice Merry. “It was so that people could still enjoy Gene’s music,” said Nathan. “Mum and Dad went to see his family in America. Dad has sung everywhere, including the US.” Tony’s successful career has seen him appearing on shows with greats such as The Chiffons, The Platters and Bobby Vee. “In Nottingham, my parents had a guest house for entertainers,” recalled Nathan. “I thought it was normal that people who were on the televison were in our house. They were friends with people like Roy Orbison and Windsor Davies, and Mum was close to Freddie Mercury’s mother and sister. “Along with my brother Daniel, and sisters Kim and Johanna, I lived in the entertainment world, and we went to places like Paris and Germany with my parents. We played with the kids of famous people, and didn’t think anything of it.” As a youngster, Nathan attended drama classes at The Televison Workshop, run by Central TV at their Midlands’ studios. “I always wanted to be a stage actor,” he said, “and I had to pass auditions to go there. I went twice a week, and James Corden was there at the same time. “When I left school at 16, we all moved over here to live.” Nathan had several jobs, before teaming up with David, who started supply business Superior Foods. “To begin with, it was only us, and we made all
the produce ourselves. I really enjoyed cooking! “After that, I moved with my family to the north of the island, and Dad started a carpet and upholstery business. It’s colder up there, and a lot of the older people liked carpets!” Nathan has a real passion for music, which is apparent. “In my house, there are cables, speakers, keyboards and guitars everywhere”, he said. “Every home should have an instrument, and everyone should learn to play one. They’re very calming, and can reset your mood.” When it comes to performing, his daughters, Lucy, 10, and four-year-old Izzy are keen to copy their gifted Dad. “Izzy’s always doing shows for us on the table, and enjoys strumming a guitar,” said Nathan proudly, “and Lucy loves dressing up. “A couple of years ago, Lucy had a serious accident and her arm was broken very badly, but she’s getting better and better.” Every Saturday, the girls go to Estrella’s Theatre School for singing, dancing and drama lessons. “I’m a vocal coach there,” he said, “and teach children from 7-18, including Lucy. What I learned at the workshop, I can now pass on to my pupils.” Nathan, the longest-serving cast member, opens The Sound of Musicals extravaganza with his tribute to Frank Sinatra, and is also responsible for organising the technical side of things, including the sound and lighting. In a few weeks, changes will be taking place at Showtime, and
Nathan added: “I think our show works, and I’ve been part of it since the start, nearly 10 years a g o . B u t we’ve got some good ideas and we’re going to make it even better. It has definitely progressed and improved over the years.” Nathan also sings with fellow-castmember Dominic James in their Frankie Valli tribute act “Oh, What a Night”. As James and Jones, they perform the show, weekly, at The Soul Lodge in Las Americas. “We obviously don’t look like Frankie,” he said, “but we definitely sound like him, and some people even think we’re miming! “But, to me, singing a song or playing a guitar doesn’t make you special, because anybody can do anything. Yet I know that listening to a song can help people cope with things in their lives, and I like the thought of that!”
The Sound Of Musicals is on every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday evening from 8pm. To book tickets (residents’ discounts available), please call 669 622 622

Treehouse’s bad dream! THIS week saw the last few fixtures played in the current Direct Telecom Pool league. And though the winners and losers had all been decided, league positions were still up for grabs. Treehouse A, tipped to challenge for the Division One title at the beginning of the season, fell short. But, with two matches left, they still had a chance of finishing third! First up was a trip to Los Cristianos and a clash with Dreamers A, also in the hunt for that third spot. It was a tight game with neither team prepared to give an inch. Early frames were traded and there was nothing to separate the two teams. Eventually, Dreamers A made the breakthrough, easing into a slim lead, which they were not prepared to concede. And, eventually, they got over the line first. The win secured third place for the Los Cristianos team and Gav “the fluke” was in buoyant mood, dreaming of a trophy, But you get nothing for bronze! Treehouse A had to dust themselves down as they travelled to the
Palms Bar in Torviscas for their final game of the season, against Tenerife Hammers A. With both teams tied on 40 points, this was now a decider for the league’s fourth spot. And, having already warmed up with an earlier game, Treehouse A were favourites. But Hammers A, determined to finish the season on a high, flew out of the traps, taking early frames. Treehouse A just couldn’t find a way into the match and Hammers A simply kept punishing them. Fortunately for the visitors, they picked up a couple of frames to avoid the whitewash. It was a disappointing end to the season for Treehouse A, but they will surely return next season, revitalised! In Los Abrigos, Phoenix Potters hosted Palms A in a match which, a few weeks ago, looked like being a second-place decider. But the hosts’ form has slipped away and Palms secured the silver medal last week, so, technically, this was a dead rubber. But that didn’t prevent a fine night’s pool. One of the keys to the Palms’ success this season has been their strength in depth, which was again on display as they blooded team mascot Dave, now affectionately known as Pudsey. He has been watching

py’s A. And, concluding their league fixtures, Bluebell B again met Hoppy’s A, with revenge in mind. However, the visitors needed a win to avoid the wooden spoon. And, inspired by the previous week’s result, they started well and picked up early frames. Once in front, they never looked back, and, despite a Bluebell B recovery, Hoppy’s A grabbed the win!
and supporting the team for a few weeks, and practising afterwards. The eyes were watching as he made a fine debut. A bit of fortune was behind his first win over Jamie, another young gun, but his re-match win was well deserved. It’s another example of the league’s long-time success, and both lads will be excellent players in a couple of years. The contest was close, but a confident Palms side were always on top. They were ahead 8-1 at one stage, before a late Phoenix rally gave them a bit of respect at 9-3. Hat-tip to JT, who

somehow produced a world-class finish to defeat Pod with a clearance of which Jimmy White would have been proud. In Division Two, Palms Rebels will be pleased with a mid-table finish in their first season. They took three points off Treehouse B, who picked up the wooden spoon, and you feel that if they can add another player to their ranks, the Rebels could be title challengers next season. Elsewhere, lightning struck twice. Last week saw James Hammers C win the league after Bluebell B came up short against Hop-

Pas over at Phoenix? IT wasn’t just a local derby at Phoenix Bar last Friday, because the visit of Pas O Nadas to the reigning champions gave them a chance to narrow the gap on Scruffy Macs, who didn’t have a game. And, given the hosts’ recent form, the Nadas might have been quietly confident of a positive result. But, despite some close legs, and Daddy Cool’s 25th and 26th maximums, Phoenix took all five singles points. Even London rolled back the years, inflicting a 3-2 defeat on Richard for only his
second singles setback this season. The Nadas rallied to take both doubles, then faltered again in the trebles as Johnny hit the double to beat his brother, Ricky! Just a taster for the Handicap Trophy final? We shall see! Anyway, we go to the last match of the campaign with Scruffy Macs need 13 points from their two remaining fixtures to seal the title. Elsewhere, Trish hit a 180 for Sandys during a 6-2 defeat by Gaffers, while the Pub also notched six at Exiles, and PSB held the trebles to beat the Playboys. With The Tavern out of action, Palms Pool Bar narrowed the gap at the top of Division 2 with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Sundowners, who had Chris firing in a maximum. But last Friday’s highlight came for a

The big stage beckons Iberostar’s golden week SMIRKING? You bet they are. Iberostar Tenerife have spent all season setting records, and then bursting through them!
E G A T E S A Granadilla Tenerife will be looking to hit top form on Sunday when they host Fu n d a c i o n Albacete at noon in El Medano. The season is entering a crucial stage, and the big derby game with La Laguna’s Tacuense has been confirmed for Saturday, 25th March at 5pm in CD Tenerife’s Heliodoro stadium in Santa Cruz. Home performances have been the key to a winning season in Spain’s Premier League, and it has brought recognition to individual players. Keeper Noelia Ramos
has been invited to the Spain Under-19 training camp from 1315th March to continue her international career. The club are already selling tickets for the derby in Santa Cruz, which will be the biggest stage either team have
played on. And they are determined to get several thousand fans in to establish a record. Prices range from one euro to five euros for the best seats, the money going to the Caja Siete charitable foundation. Meanwhile, the focus is on Sunday.
But their 75-64 home win over Real Madrid was sensational, even compared with recent achievements. And the La Laguna-based team are now two points clear at the top of the Liga Endesa. Full-house crowds of 5,000 are becoming a regular event as the team continue to ride their wave of form. Coach Txus Vidorreta, naturally delighted, praised a secondquarter tightening of defensive play as the key. Tenerife took the
first quarter 26-24, and became mean in the following phases, 17-13, 14-15 and 18-12, which sparked a celebratory overture. Canadian Aaron Doornekamp has been a huge signing for the team this season, and the star from Ontario top-scored again with 17 points, followed by Tim Abromaitis (15) . But the coach singled out 14-point Greek Georgios Bogris for
driving the victory with his all-round hard work throughout. Europe is also being conquered by Tenerife, their knock-out stage of second leg in the European Champions League becoming another outstanding night. Tenerife, trailing by three points from the away leg in Greece, wiped the court with PAOK Salonica 8054 to march into the draw for the remaining eight teams. A second quarter blitz was the key, with Tenerife taking it 24-6 to pile on the pressure. Top-scorer was Marius Grigonis (20), San Miquel weighed in with 13, and the other players all did their bit to ensure further progress.

CD Tenerife
Weak bench, big wrench! By Colin Kirby
TENERIFE, since the turn of the year, have been one of the best Segunda Division teams. But, unfortunately, they do not possess one of the best squads!
That was exposed so cruelly in this home draw with struggling Mirandes. Injuries and suspensions leave coach Pep Marti trying to cover the gaps, and the January transfer window dealings have yet to pay off. Yet the fans are still upbeat because the previous week’s surprise win at Mallorca means four points from the last two games. As Eric Morecambe might have said: “Tenerife got the right points, but not necessarily in the right order!” With Raul Camara and Edu Oriol injured, there was no natural right-back. But Jorge, always magnificent in central defence, moved across to cover and had an uncomfortable evening. Tayron, tried as a strike partner for Amath, was carried off after eight minutes with a hip-muscle injury. On came Cristo Gonzalez for another chance to prove he’s not just a moody young forward.

The 15,506 Carnival crowd barely had time to adjust their fancy-dress outfits before a quick left-wing break and a cross from Aaron found the head of Amath, who nodded in his ninth goal of the season. That should have been the launch-pad for another goal-spree, but Mirandes were desperate for points and sensed uncertainty in the changed home defence. Pedro Martin, one of several ex-Tenerife players, was fired up and tested Dani Hernandez with a decent shot. Shortly after, he looked to have exploited Jorge, but Captain Suso back-tracked well to clear the danger. Then, just before half-time.
the unthinkable happened. The ball broke to Nestor, and it appeared to be in slow-motion as his shot went under the diving Dani to make it 1-1. Tenerife were making little impact up front, with Cristo drifting out of position and not showing the urgency expected of him. But Aitor Sanz came off the bench for Alberto five minutes into the second half and freshened up the midfield. Aaron found Suso darting inside and passed to him, but his shot at the keeper was soft. There´s always a buzz when Amath is on the ball, and he tried all his tricks. Then, leaving defenders in his wake, he slipped the ball to Aaron,
who couldn’t force a save from the Mirandes keeper. The referee was unravelling, dishing cards out for niggling offences and missing the obvious spoiling tactics of Mirandes’ sub Maikel and their keeper, Sergio. The best chance of the game fell to Cristo, but his shot was rushed and careless - the hallmark of his play this season. Suso had his 32nd birthday in the week, and he still has plenty of fire in him. A typically-determined run took two defenders to stop him short of the goal, and though Cristo has 13 years’ advantage on Suso, he is lagging behind him in every department. Tenerife created plenty of pressure, with Aaron firing in long corners and trying to vary it with a few, shorter, set-piece moves. But the lack of another goal-scorer to help Amath was proving costly. The referee topped a poor performance by denying the home side a clear penalty in the 74th minute. Tenerife-born Maikel Mesa
locked his legs around Amath’s and brought him down in the box. Even the Carnival-themed pirates, wearing eyepatches, could see it was a spot-kick, but the ref waved claims away. After that, some desperation crept into Tenerife’s play. Aaron’s shot rebounded to Camiile who blasted wide, while Cristo aimed his effort at the moon … and time was fading away. Another uninspiring striker, Jouini, for Jorge was a gamble for the final three minutes and a miserly two minutes of stoppage time. But it didn’t affect the result. Camille will miss Sunday´s game at Getafe through suspension, so maybe Japan’s Gaku Shibasaki, a January signing, will finally be ready to play after illness and “anxiety” problems. The other two January arrivals have injuries and just 112 minutes action between them, so coach Pep Marti might have to dip into the rich pool of B-team talent to shore up the squad. The weekends other results saw Levante and Girona tighten their grip on the automatic promotion places. But Tenerife at least rose to third, with a great chance of nailing one of the four play-off spots.
CD Marino
It’s Agoney for Marino! By Colin Kirby
CHANCES missed by both sides meant an inter island stalemate as CD Marino were held to a 1-1 home draw by CD Cotillo of Fuerteventura. After the previous week’s 3-0 defeat, coach Dumpierez moved Brad Mills from rightback to central-defender, and he looked assured in that role. Saul Garcia filled the main striking slot and was dominant in the air, leaving Adan to drift in from deep positions. Facu Valiente created the first Marino chance by slipping the ball to Adan, whose shot was blocked by a defender. Fran Delgado, overlapping from left-back, fired in a cross-field ball

which had a bit too much power in it and evaded his team-mates. But Marino got their noses in front after 11 minutes
when Adan stretched the Cotillo defence to score from an acute angle. Saul thought he had increased the lead when he
beat Abraham and blasted a strong shot towards the top of the goal, but keeper Agoney pulled off a wonderful, flying save. The home side, to push their way back into the promotion play-off picture, needed to punish their opponents. They engineered some good openings, with Facu in creative form, but the finishing wasn’t sharp enough. Cotillo started to get into the game more, and a longrange free-kick was cleared by Marco in the home goal. A later shot went into the side-netting. The visitors continued their revival after the break, and Pablo made himself some space for a shot. But his hesitation allowed Brad to get back and block him. Fran Delgado linked again down the left with Adan,
whose effort lacked power. As the near-misses continued, there was always a chance that Cotillo would nick an equaliser. Sure enough, it came after 59 minutes when the home defence failed to clear the ball and it came to Peraza, who buried it in the back of the net. But Cotillo captain and keeper Agoney foiled a few more Marino chances. He was quick to race out to deny Saul Garcia, but Marino were still a threat. Sub Saul Gonzalez looked lively, dragging a shot just wide as the Blues forced a series of corners, with no end result. At the final whistle Cotillo were extremely happy with Agoney and their point. But Marino, dropping to sixth place, knew they had let them off the hook.
