Sightseers rocked by cable-car fault Continued from Front Seventy people had to be lowered 30 metres from the suspended cars, via the evacuation system, which comprised a clamping system and rope, with assistance from firemen and Guardia Civil officers. Both cable cars were full when they came to a halt, and, initially, some 256 people were isolated between them and the station at the top of Teide. An “important rescue operation” was mounted to recover all those trapped, with numerous emergency resources ensuring the safety of everyone affected. But sources from the company managing the cable cars had no idea of what caused the security system to kick in and put the brakes on.
A total of 111 people occupied three shelters overnight on Teide’s summit, accompanied by security professionals. In addition, a group of 52 adults and three minors were stranded at the summit’s cable-car station, while another 40, mostly with reduced mobility, spent the night in the Altavista
Refuge with medical staff. And another 16 people, including five minors, stayed in the concrete shed under the cable cars’ Tower 2. The shelters were able to provide dinner and breakfast, according to Nazaret Díaz, general director of Emergency and Security. All the people evacuated
South Hospital gets the go-ahead again IT’S good news at last for the South Hospital’s stopstart odyssey.
José Manuel Baltar, the Canaries’ Minister of Health, has come to an agreement with construction company Sacyr, whose workers have been on strike there. It means that work will resume on Monday, with Sacyr officials guaranteeing the quality of materials, the promised completion date and the original budget of just below eight million euros. A Ministry of Health statement said the stalemate concerning Phase III building work at the new Arona hospital, in El Mojon, was finally over. It followed a demand from prestigious builders Sacyr for more money because its officials had “underestimated” the true cost.
But a stubborn Canarian Health authority refused to concede ground, and the delay will have proved fruitful. This third phase comprises four operating theatres, three labour and delivery rooms, two new wards with areas for maternity and post-surgical patients, and other facilities such as the new Pharmacy and Sterilisation service. Once the building work has been completed, the much-needed hospital will expand its services, with 96 hospital beds and a CT scanner, as well as a cafeteria for both staff and public. The ultimate goal is to activate all the areas within this phase progressively, and to increase specialised care-services here in the South, according to the health needs and population growth. The new agreement will
come as a huge relief to Arona Mayor José Julián Mena, who was furious at the delay in restarting vital building work. Only recently, he demanded “real advances” from the Canarian Government and Tenerife Cabildo. Mayor Mena said: “The construction has suffered an intolerable and inexplicable delay for the residents in the South of the Island since the former Minister of Health, Jesus Morera, left that position.” The Arona chief, along with the Canarian Government’s pro-hospital Socialist Group minister Teresa Cruz Oval visited the facilities recently, and both were appalled at the situation. Mena added: “South Tenerife needs a real hospital, a hospital worthy of that name, and, following the setbacks and delays, we can now progress.”
from the cable car, which was heading up, descended to its base station. Those rescued from the other cable car were split into two groups, with some ascending 800m to the summit station and the others dropping to the base station. Each person came down at his or her own pace because
of the rough terrain. And there was more drama for many because night fell during their descent, as did the temperature, to nearly zero degrees. But with no torches, they utilised their mobile phones to light the way. Fortunately, three helicopters were able to carry most of the 111 tourists who spent the night at high altitude back down the mountain, despite the poor weather. Many of them had been airlifted by midday yesterday (Thursday), while a small group walked down from Teide, accompanied by rescue workers, said Lourdes Jorge, a spokeswoman from the Emergency and Security service. The cable-car system will stay closed until tomorrow (Saturday).
We’re all turning green ADEJE joined the worldwide green party last night (Thursday) by offering its wholehearted support to the Irish Consul, on the eve of today’s St Patrick’s Day celebration.
For the third consecutive year, Adeje Town’s Plaza de España linked up with Global Greening, a collection of international buildings and iconic landmarks, which were flooded in emerald green to celebrate Ireland’s most international of national festivals, in honour of its patron saint. Incredibly, Adeje’s green Plaza was featured alongside Rome’s Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, the London Eye, the Great Wall of China, Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue, the One World Trade Centre in New York, Niagara Falls, Budapest’s Chain
Bridge and the Matsue Castle in Japan. There was also a gala dinner in Costa Adeje Golf, hosted by Álvaro de la Bárcena Argany, the Honorary Irish Consul. Today (Friday), Holy Mass will be held at San Blas Catholic Church, Golf del Sur, at 10am, and at Los Cristianos Church, in the plaza, at Noon (followed by light refreshments). And at 7pm this evening (Friday), Holy Mass will be celebrated in Santa Úrsula Church, in Adeje’s Calle Grande. As usual, several bars throughout the South will also be staging their own celebrations in honour of Ireland’s patron saint. And Oasis Fm DJs will be broadcasting live at the following venues from Noon until 9pm: O’Neill’s, Murphy’s, Leonardo’s and Paddy O’Kelly’s. For more details, see the main advert on Page 16.

Chinese can’t get enough of Spain! SPAIN is becoming increasingly attractive to investors in China, who last year pumped 1.7bn euros into the country, which was nearly four times more than the previous year. It means that Spain is now the seventh-biggest recipient of Chinese investment in Europe, where Germany and Britain still attract the largest sums. They were followed by Finland, Switzerland, Ireland and France, according to a report by Baker McKenzie, the multinational law firm. Investment in 2016 focused on infrastructure and entertainment, and there was also significant realestate activity by the Dalian Wanda group, headed by business magnate Wang Jianlin. But the most important transaction by Chinese investors in Spain last
year was the acquisition of Urbaser, the environmental unit of the ACS Group, by Firion Investment, an investment fund in which China Tianying has a stake. The fund paid over 1.17bn, which could go up to 1.4bn, depending on
Explosive ETA cache is found by Guardia Civil
SPAIN’S Guardia Civil have unearthed a collection of explosives, housed in seven drums and belonging to terrorist group ETA. The discovery was the result of an extensive investigation carried out by the Guardia on open terrorist actions, and through reviewing cases that took place years ago. Initial probes show that the cache has not seen recent activity. The investigators are looking at the possibility that it had been used by ETA to supply material to a “cell”, which was operating in the area of Irun, (Guipuzcoa) in the Basque Country.
The site was cordoned off and Guardia experts in deactivating explosives took over. The operation remains ongoing and the existence of other stashes in the surrounding area has not been ruled out. ETA, or “Euzkadi Ta Askatusana” (Basque Country and Freedom), was an armed nationalist group founded in 1959. Its goal was to gain independence for the Greater Basque Country. It is acknowledged as Spain’s deadliest terror group, having killed 860 people throughout its history. In 2011, the group announced a “definitive cessation of its armed activity”, while the Spanish Government has called for ETA to be disbanded completely.
Urbaser’s performance. The Chinese Government is also encouraging its population to watch European football, and the second-biggest operation last year was the purchase of Spain’s RCD Espanyol for 200m euros by Chen
Yansheng, which owns toy car-maker Rastar. The Baker McKenzie report also mentions a deal still in the pipeline. It involves the purchase by the China Aviation Industry Corporation (AVIC) of Aritex, a tech firm owned by Spain’s Comsa, for 167m euros. According to Maite Díez, a partner at Baker McKenzie and an expert in Chinese investment, there is growing interest in Spain. “They are attracted by European companies in several sectors, such as the food industry, because that gives them access to the supply chains,” she said. “The goal is to offer highquality products in China, where there is a growing demand.” Díez, a law expert, said Chinese investors had made the most of the fall in prices, triggered by the economic crisis of 1008 in the West, and have changed their strategy accordingly. “Before this, their interest lay in Latin America and Africa,
where public corporations were buying raw materials to supply their own growing population,” she added. “They would finance it through the mass export of cheap products to the entire world.” After the Lehman Brothers’ collapse, private Chinese firms started buying industrial, infrastructure, environmental, tech and distribution companies with an international focus. They are also interested in real estate, finance and in entertainment, a sector in which they have snapped up hotel chains, cinemas, shopping malls and football teams. “The Chinese government is encouraging the creation of soccer schools in many regions,” said Díez. “It is encouraging its population to watch European football. “That is why you see growing numbers of Spanish teams wearing Chinese advertising on their shirts, and Spain’s playing schedules compatible with China’s time zone.”
Squatter beaten-up by intruder thieves A MAN aged 43 was beatenup by one of two thugs, who broke into the Playa Paraiso apartment where he squats and stole his mobile phone. The victim, who calls himself “El Loco Callejero”, has, in the last few weeks, released various videos on social media to denounce “police corruption” or inappropriate behaviour among a few local police in Adeje. However, the squatter does not know who attacked him, or why But he also has serious differences with other people for various reasons. The incident occurred between 1.30-2am on Monday in the Marina Palace complex, which was raided in 2011 by the National Police and Guardia Civil in an operation involving money-laundering by an Italian mob. All the people arrested and accused of illicit possession
of weapons, bar one, were acquitted by the National Court last year through lack of evidence. The victim, also known as a “professional at evicting squatters”, said he was watching TV when he heard a loud noise on his terrace glass door. He got up to see what was happening and one of the men hit him and threw him on the floor. He then threw some furniture on top of him and asked the other man to look for the mobile phone. Once they had found it,
the pair left the apartment through the front door. The victim, who suffered blows to the face and head, as well as cuts on a thigh, a leg and forearm, was taken to hospital for treatment. He said his Rottweiler dog died of poisoning a few weeks ago, and,in addition, revealed that two of his friends in the same complex had received anonymous letters under the door of their apartments, “inviting” them to leave the Marina Palace as soon as possible, according to one of them.

No more Benidorm for Britain’s Most-Wanted GARETH Edwards, one of Britain’s “most wanted” criminals and regarded as “very dangerous”, has been arrested by Benidorm’s Local Police.
He is one of 10 British hoodlums named in the Policia Nacional’s Operacion Captura, launched last November. And the European arrest warrant issued against him warned that he was, possibly, armed and in possession of drugs. The 25-year-old, who faces three life sentences in the UK for robbery with violence and intimidation, was detained in a Calle Mallorca pub in the resort’s English Zone. Local Police, who had been working on the case for some weeks, after receiving information that Edwards was in the area, swooped when a man answering his description entered the bar. He did not put up any resistance when police approached him. And when
he showed them a passport with an unconvincing photograph, they prepared to take him in for identification. He managed to escape as he entered the patrol car, but was found shortly afterwards, hiding in the
empty swimming pool of some nearby apartments. Once at the police station, his fingerprints confirmed him as Gareth Bryan Edwards. He was transferred to the National Police, who later revealed that his passport was
genuine … but issued to another person! Edwards, who had been supporting himself by dealing drugs at street level, was carrying three wraps of cocaine as well as details of his clients when arrested, said police sources.

Organised group cash in on villas OFFICERS from the Guardia Civil are hunting a gang who have committed at least four robberies, stealing two safes, 600 euros in cash, jewellery and a tablet, among other items. The break-ins happened in three villas - a chalet near Adeje golf course, one in the Tierra del Trigo area and another in El Galeón. The fourth was a store in Grande Street, Adeje, where they broke a window and stole the cash register. The robberies, which have spread alarm among residents, occurred during early hours, and the gang always used the same method in the villas, by forcing a window open. The Guardia Civil, who inspected the crime scenes, believe the culprits are an organised group of criminals on the island.

Mugger tried it on twice …with the same woman AN Arona resident has been arrested by Guardia Civil officers, accused of robbery with violence and attempted intimidation during the Los Gigantes Carnival.
The incident occurred when the 36-year-old man tried twice to grab the victim’s bag with force. On a first occasion, the suspect pulled the bag and, when the victim resisted, he punched her in the face. She had to be treated by paramedics. After an hour or so, the suspect again tried to steal the bag from the same person. Again, the victim resisted and fought back. But this time, the suspect shoved the woman so hard that she fell to the ground, hitting her face, She had to receive stitches from medical staff to the cut. But officers were able to identify and arrest him, thanks to the description provided by numerous eyewitnesses. He was finally found in the square where the carnival was taking place and detained. Meanwhile, warning notices of pickpockets, posted around the San Blas tourist area of Golf del Sur, did not deter two would-be thieves on Sunday morning. As holiday-maker Dorothy
Heaton made her way to the local church for morning Mass, she thought she’d snagged her shopping bag on the wall, running alongside the steps she was climbing. In fact, she was being trailed by two “welldressed men”, one of whom was attempting to unzip her bag. Once Mrs Heaton, from Leigh, Lancashire, realised what was happening, she gave them a good telling off and they fled, rapidly. “It was a shock at first,” she said. “I couldn’t believe they’d got that close without me noticing. They must have guessed I’d got my handbag, with all my details and money, inside the shopping bag. “But I was so angry that I really gave them what for, and they ran off.” The 120-strong congregation at San Blas Church were also warned about keeping a close eye on their handbags or wallets when they left the church en-mass, because they made easy targets for snatch-thieves and pickpockets.
Broadband’s so costly in Spain
A SURVEY by the EU Commission ranks Spain as having the secondcostliest broadband internet in the European Union, topped by Croatia only. Spain’s cheapest monthly offer for an ADSL connection, with a speed of between 12-30MBps (megabytes per second), works out at 2.7% of a person’s gross income, which is far in excess of the
1.18% EU average, says the report. The lowest prices for EU connections are in Sweden, Germany, Finland and Austria, in that order. An annual study, known as the Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), measures advances in digital technology throughout the EU membership and examines five areas: connectivity, human capital, internet use, integration of technology, and online public services. Taking all five into account, Spain is 14th
out of the 28, up from 15th last year, joining nine other countries which fall somewhere around the middle: Austria, Germany, Malta, Lithuania, Portugal, France, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Latvia. However, despite being so costly, Spain scores points for being among the EU’s most “online” countries. Its use of modern technology by companies, and the provision of public services by internet, is above the European average. And the country has improved in all areas since last year.
Pedal-power’s set to be switched on
CYCLING is one the fastest-growing ways to enjoy the charms of Tenerife. And in the northwest, Isla Baja is the latest region to tap into this tourist market.
Officials are planning a cycle lane, from Garachico to Buenavista del Norte in a project costing one million euros. It has been approved by the Cabildo, which will foot the bill. The Costas coastal authority just need to give final approval and the first wheels could be turning by the end of the year.
There will be 17km of track, hugging the coast from Garachico port, through Los Silos, and on to Buenavista del Norte, with some interesting offshoots to San Pedro, Las Cruces, and connecting to La Caleta, all a little inland from the main route. Buenavista del Norte Mayor Eva Maria Garcia is
confident it will boost the economies of the towns and villages in the Isla Baja region. Garachico Councillor Jose Heriberto also welcomed the scheme as a way to increase the security of the many cyclists already flocking to the area. Rural tourism is on the
rise, and Isla Baja is already a popular area. The history, culture, and outstanding views make it an ideal setting for cyclists to explore yet another facet of Tenerife. And the cycle lane would add to the visiting options … without adding pollution or intrusive developments.

Animals targeted by evil poisoners
AUTHORITIES are investigating a possible case of mass animal poisoning on the Anaga Mountain, discovered by Santa Cruz Forest Unit.
In turn, the Unit notified the Local Police and the Guardia Civil Nature Protection service (Seprona). The disturbing find took place on Monday in Igueste de San Andrés, where numerous dead animals were found at the bottom of a barranco. According to the forest units’ Twitter account, they found nine ducks, four chickens, four pigeons, a turtle dove and a cat … and they don’t rule out finding more dead creatures. Although the investigation is still open, the results of toxicology tests have not yet been released. But everything points to poisoning as a possible cause of death.

Holi festival comprises an explosion of colour
A HUGE gathering of people took part in the Indian festival Holi (or Colour), a well-known Indian tradition which has been celebrated for over a decade here in the South. It is held to honour the new season of Spring, and participants throw colourful powder, water and foam at each other. The party is an explosion of joy, which unites East and West, and invokes good humour, said the organisers from Fañabe square, where the event took place. Tenerife South Indian Association organised the event, with all the ingredients to ensure a fantastic occasion. And they didn’t forget to supply the popular Indian cuisine. This
community invites residents and tourists every year to enjoy and share the popular
festival with the natives from India. The Holi, an important cultural and social gathering, is one of the most impressive festivals in India. And the tradition has spread throughout the world. Yet,
so far, it is not celebrated in Tenerife’s Santa Cruz capital. Originally, the colours were obtained by mixing water with various medicinal plants, prescribed to ward off fever. The festival also breaks down discrimination barriers because everyone is colourful, reaffirming universal brotherhood. There are two key days: the eve, known as Joliká (or bonfire night), and Holi, in which multi-coloured water takes centre stage. This Hindu tradition is celebrated at the beginning of Spring, when the weather changes, and people are likely to have a virus or cold. And throwing coloured powder has a therapeutic significance because they would have been made from herbs, prescribed by Ayurvedic (traditional doctors).
Holi refers to Joliká, the evil sister of King Hiranyakashipu and Prince Prahlada’s aunt. According to Hindu legend, when the powers bestowed on the King blinded him, believing he should be the only deity his people should worship, Prince Prahlada decided to continue venerating Vishnu, second god in the Hindu triumvirate, and infuriated his father. The King chose to punish his son, cruelly, but nothing changed. So his aunt decided to kill the prince and invited him to sit on a pyre with her, wearing a fireproof mantle that protected her from the flames. But the mantle then changed its owner and protected Prahlada, who saw his aunt burned by the flames. And that’s the Holi doctrine: good always ends up overcoming evil!

NEWS IN BRIEF Major blaze averted
SUNDAY night’s rapid response by emergency services enabled them to fend off a dangerous forest fire which, eventually, affected a 2,000sq/m area only, between Aguamansa and Cañeño, in the Santa Cruz region of La Orotava. The blaze was contained just before nightfall, which was a huge relief because high winds up to 90kmh were expected that night. It followed a week of calima, which dried out the forest and left it vulnerable to a major disaster. But thanks to firefighters and other emergency services’ rapid response, the situation was under control in good time.
Fun park expansion
PLANS are afoot for a 300m-euro transformation of Benalmadena’s Tivoli World amusement park by Madrid real estate agents Tremón. The project includes two commercial zones (57,000sq/m), a hotel, cinemas, auditorium, three office buildings and an underground car park for 2,000 vehicles. The name stays the same, but the amusement park faces a major remodelling, with the installation of 43 attractions. The scheme will ensure more than 1,600 jobs during the two-year construction works, and a further 3,300 jobs afterwards.

Father’s Day prizes for Adeje shoppers SPANISH Father’s day is on Sunday (19th March) and Adeje’s commercial sector is offering prizes for those who shop in the borough during the month, under the theme: My Father is…Nº1 (mi padre es…un puntasso).
Manuel Luis Méndez Martín, Adeje’s Economic Development Councillor, said: “This campaign continues our commitment to the commercial sector, which has been growing in recent years, given the good working relationship between the private sector and the council, and has helped in the creation of new jobs.” Among the prizes on offer will be a fabulous cruise for two people with MSC Cruceros. For the rest of March, at certain points in the borough, people shopping in participating stores will be invited to record a video message congratulating their father. The most original message will be the overall winner, and the person making the message will also get his/her money back from
the original purchase. Those wishing to participate must also download the application, El Puntasso, in their phones, and make sure the barcodes on their relevant purchases have
been scanned. Adeje Council reminds consumers to keep receipts always, in case of returns, and always check conditions of purchase, especially if there are special offers.
Young girl’s sea rescue
A WOMAN of 43 gave birth to twins in an emergency ambulance, which had been called while she was attending an appointment at her medical centre in El Doctoral, Gran Canaria. During the drive to the hospital, the ambulance stopped twice, once near La Laja and the second in front of the Insular Hospital, both times to assist the woman deliver each baby. Happily, mum and babies were taken to the Maternity Hospital, and all three are in good health.
Carnival girl ‘raped’
A TEENAGER, aged 15, told the authorities she was raped during the Los Gigantes Carnival last weekend by a 21-year-old Adeje man, who has been arrested. The girl had gone to the carnival with her sister, brother and a group of friends, and the incident was said to have happened at 4am on Sunday. Apparently, the victim and the accused knew each other via social media. Guardia Civil officers, who have questioned the suspect, are still investigating the case, but the man in question has been released without charges, pending DNA test results.
A WAITER and an off-duty Guardia Civil officer saved a 15-year-old girl from drowning as she was swept out to sea on Los Guirres, Tazacorte, in La Palma.
Grecia Romina, a restaurant owner, said: “The girl is my chef ’s
daughter, and the incident happened around 3.30pm when she went into the water and was swept away by the current. “My waiter, Gustavo, did not hesitate for a moment and went into the sea with a lifeguard. Immediately, a man sitting at one of the tables with a woman dashed quickly into the sea and, with a surfer’s help, the girl managed to grab on to his board
and he brought her to the beach.” The man was an off-duty Guardia Civil officer, stationed in Tenerife, who was having lunch with his wife. But when he saw what was happening, he stripped down to his underwear immediately and jumped in the sea just after the waiter. Between them and the surfer, they helped the youngster to safety.

Sons turned a blind eye to mother’s heartbreaking decline
Tragic, senseless death of discarded pensioner PARAMEDICS who called at a Santa Cruz house because a elderly woman had died there received an almighty shock. The old lady, aged 76, was curled up in a foetal position, weighing just 25 kilos, with sores all over her body. And she did not appear to have eaten, or received any hygienic care, for a long time. Tragic Ana Delia Arceo Méndez was found on 26th August 2015 in her Los Gladiolos home, and the paramedics’ findings created huge anger throughout the Canaries. The prosecutor wants 20year prison sentences for the victim’s two sons and daughter-in law, who lived off her pension and left the poor woman to die without offering NATIONAL Police have arrested a 36-year-old man. known to have a criminal record for violence, who was carrying banned weapons and drugs. He was found in Guamarteme, a neighbourhood town within the Gran Canaria capital of Las Palmas, and had a knife, an axe and machete, a mallet and various narcotic substances inside a backpack. A security guard in the area told police he had seen an individual who seemed to be drunk, with what seemed to be a large knife in his belt. While police were frisking the suspect, they seized a 20cm knife and another knife hidden in his clothes. And, along with the other items mentioned, they also found a packet of cocaine in his backpack, along with several psychotropic drugs, usually issued for people suffering schizophrenia and mania.
any care or consideration. Sources say the paramedics found the room where woman’s body was found “totally abandoned, and full of dirt and faeces”. According to the forensic report, cited by the prosecutor, the victim died of a multiple organ failure through a prolonged state of abandonment “without hygienic sanitary care, and
malnutrition, weighing at the time of her death 25kg”. The prosecutor said that her two children and daughterin-law had no work or income, and were financially dependent on her monthly, 636-euro widow’s pension. Though taking advantage of the pension, however, the trio did not pay adequate attention to the woman, which is why, say doctors, she died. Her ordeal began in 2000 when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis, urinary incontinence, and benzodiazepine (tranquiliser) dependence. Despite her diseases, she visited her health care-centre just twice in three years, according to official documents. The Public Prosecutor said
her children went to the house every two or three days, but they did not feed her at all, or move her from the bed, even though she had a wheelchair. The lack of attention resulted in a state of progressive, physical and mental deterioration, in a short period. This situation caused multiple organ failure, which ended the woman’s life. She died on 26th August 2015 at around 6pm, but it was not noticed by the dastardly trio for three days. For those reasons, the Prosecutor insists that a 20year sentence be imposed on the wanton trio for aggravated homicide. Their trial will be held next month in the Provincial Court of Santa Cruz.

Catholic Church feeling the pinch DESPITE more people contributing money through an income tax provision, the Catholic Church’s income in Spain has dropped by more than a million euros a year. Spanish taxpayers have the option to check a box on their tax return forms, which allows them to give 0.7% of their tax obligation to the Catholic Church. Last year almost 7.5 million taxpayers ticked the box, contributing a total of 249 million euros. Although the number of contributors went up by 56,000 during the last fiscal year, the sum actually collected yearon-year by the church fell by 1.09m euros. More than 42 million people have been baptised in Spain, covering about 92% of the total population. But, despite strong traditions, most Spaniards do not attend religious services regularly, while 54% hardly ever, or never, go to church (except for wedding and funerals), A study conducted last October by the Spanish Centre of Sociological Research shows that of the Spaniards who identify themselves as being religious, 15% go to church sometimes in a year, 10% some time per month and 19% every Sunday, or multiple times per week.

jobs, says proud Rajoy MARIANO Rajoy, Prime Minister of Spain, has announced that the Spanish economy has experienced an unprecedented transformation. “We are the European Union country that is creating the most jobs,” he said proudly. “Provided we are not foolish and we maintain a minimum level of political stability, 2017 will be good for Spain from an economic standpoint. “It is an example of recovery. It provides stability to the Euro and it is growing at a faster rate than the other EU countries. “Our forecast is for growth of 2.5%, and to create more than 400,000 jobs, but we are working to beat these forecasts. So we must persevere with the policies we have implemented.” Rajoy also outlined to his European partners the aspects he considers are key for both the European Union and for Spain. “We must not undo the reforms undertaken, but rather push on and, if possible, improve them,” he stressed. “At a European level, it is fundamental to maintain and strengthen such initiatives as the European

An inspector from the Cabildo’s Lanzarote Heritage Service discovered the sale and told the Guardia Civil, which located the artefacts and the seller, who had no Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI), known as the Juncker Plan, which is working very well, and also the initiative on youth employment. “And we must make an effort to complete the Banking Union.” The Prime Minister also wants the single market to be extended, to help bolster trade as a source of growth and employment.
On the same point, he said that, for the first time ever, Spain had enjoyed “four straight years with a surplus in the foreign trade sector, which has contributed a great deal to economic recovery”. He added: “At this European Council, we have reiterated this general message of support for trade as a source of well-being, which pleases me greatly.”

Spaniards among top European drug-users SPAIN has one of the highest rates of drug-use in Europe, particularly its consumption of cocaine and cannabis, according to the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA).
Yet legal, over-thecounter drugs sold in pharmacias, such as tranquilisers, hypno-sedatives and sleeping pills, far exceed the illegal drugs consumed. And these volumes have escalated far more than in any other drug group in recent years. While adults rely on these legal drugs (we are said to start using tobacco at the age of 16), adolescents begin by experimenting with cannabis from an
average age of 18.6 years. The 15-34 age group consumes far more cannabis (12.2%) than the 35-65 age group (3.5%), which actually leads in the consumption of tranquillisers. Men are more likely to use cannabis, ecstasy, speed, cocaine and heroin, as well as alcohol and tobacco. But women, generally, are more addicted to sedatives, such as tranquillisers or sleeping pills, with or without prescription. On a daily basis, an average 30.8% of people smoke tobacco, while 9.8% enjoy alcohol, 6.8% use sedatives. 5.9% tranquillisers, 3.1% sleeping pills and cannabis 1.9%. Throughout Spain, the Balearics (10.7%) consume the most cannabis, with the Canaries on 6.8%. Lowest region in a lengthy table is Castilla y Leon, on a modest 3.2%.

Madrid in black Brexit summary A LEAKED Madrid report suggests that a hard Brexit could wreak havoc on Spain’s economy, with “innumerable repercussions” on Britons living in Spain. The report, written by Spain’s Brexit commission, says Britain’s divorce from the union will leave Spain hugely exposed economically, and will have an impact on everything, from fishing rights to the careers of Spanish footballers playing for UK clubs. The bleak outlook says Spain’s GDP will fall by between 2-4bn euros and 4-6bn, and will force its EU budget contributions to an 888m-euro increase, which could result in some regions losing their European funding. The hardest-hit sectors, according to the report, will be tourism, food, pharmaceutical and the car
industry. And exports are expected to fall by between 500m euros and a billion. It added that companies with large UK operations, such as Banco Santander and Telefonica, would suffer if the pound weakened, or if the UK’s rating were lowered. The report adds that while the UK will feel most of the effects of Brexit, the EU and Spain “will also suffer negative, economic consequences”. It points out: “The economic bonds between the UK and Spain are very tight,” and believes migration policy will also be affected, with “innumerable repercussions” for Britons
living in the country. The Brits are recognised as Spain’s largest group of expats, after Romanians and Moroccans. The findings are based on information from different ministries in Spain, with input from the Spanish Embassy in London. Spanish sources said: “The aim is to get some certainty for citizens and to help the European commission in its role as negotiator. “At the end of the process, the UK can’t find itself in a better situation outside the EU than in it,” it says. “But if London doesn’t play dirty, the best thing would be not to do mutual damage.” Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says he hopes “things will turn out well. “There’s no need to over-dramatise things,” he told reporters. “What we need to do is have good negotiations. “The UK wants good negotiations, so does Europe and so does Spain, and I hope things will turn out pretty well for everyone.”

Thieving teams helped themselves to a fortune A HUGE operation, mounted by some 600 officers from the Guardia Civil and National Police has led to the arrest of 53 people, and the recovery of stolen goods, worth an estimated three million euros.
The arrests added up to 47 Romanians, five Spaniards and a Moroccan. Twenty others were interviewed, but not detained. The combined law force raided 39 properties around Spain, following a spate of robberies throughout the country. They break-ins appeared to be the work of a major gang, who employed various teams of thieves. As investigations continued, it became clear that each group had been allocated an area to target, and the main robberies were staged in Ciudad Real, Toledo, Madrid, Cuenca, Guadalajara, Cáceres, Segovia, Leon, Valladolid, Burgos and Palencia.
The mini-gangs would travel as far as 1,000km, using different cars and drivers. And, after dropping off the passengers at targeted properties, the cars would be parked in service areas, or even nearby towns, to avoid suspicion. One phone call later, the drivers would return to pick up their thieving colleagues and the stolen goods. Some members of the gang were responsible for selling-on stolen property, while others took care of money-laundering. And, by following a set of rules to try to avoid detection, they appeared to be enjoying a high-quality life. As the raids came and went, huge numbers of stolen goods, of all descriptions, were discovered. Along with expensive vehicles, the officers, who also found a total of 260,000 euros in cash, are satisfied they have identified the proceeds from 108 robberies. But they believe the final count will highlight that at least 500 burglaries in total were carried out by the whole gang.

Hash haul unloaded A TOTAL of 600kg of hashish has been offloaded from a double-engined speed-boat on to Guimar’s El Socorro beach, say police. The boat was abandoned there, and the dealers loaded the drugs into two off-road vehicles and fled, say residents. They reported the incident to the Guardia Civil, which has asked people not to publish photos taken on their mobiles because it might hinder the investigation.

GUARDIA Civil officers arrested a 45-year-old man in La Caleta for drugtrafficking, after stopping a vehicle owned by Adeje Council in which he was a passenger. Officers, who pulled the motor over because it was performing “strange manoeuvres”, identified the occupants, two men and a woman. The man subsequently arrested was nervous, and acted suspiciously when talking to the officers. They searched him and found three pieces of hashish, each weighing 50gms, hidden in his clothes.
Mayor hires sister as his own advisor POLITICAL party Ciudadanos has complained that Adeje Town Hall has hired the sister of Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, as advisor to the Mayor’s Office.
Ciudadanos highlighted in a statement that the position was published in the Official Gazette of the Province (BOP), stating that Carmen Nieves Rodríguez Fraga, as a civil servant, was “earning 32,000 euros per year”. Ciudadanos’ Adeje coordinator Patricia Barba “does not doubt her abilities”, but she added: “It’s not fair that the selection process was not open for candidates to apply. That way, the most suitable person could have obtained the position, and it would have given everyone an equal opportunity.”
Barba added: “It’s back to the old policy. In this case, Adeje’s PSOE party continues to act as always, hiring and putting family and friends in positions of trust.” An absolute majority vote, she said, “is not reason
enough for them to do what they want”. Barba has asked the Mayor to explain if the position is necessary, or if it has been created for his sister. And, if it is necessary, what criteria were used to end up hiring a relative?
She stressed: “The local institution is there to serve the public and not to employ our family members. And she has demanded “transparency and explanations for this type of recruiting”.

Serial offender crashes into big pile of trouble A SERIAL mugger, who used violence on his victims, also committed a string of traffic offences, assaulted police officers and had an outstanding arrest warrant, has been collared by the Guardia Civil. The 23-year-old was driving a car near Tacoronte last Saturday when the Puerto de la Cruz officers flagged him down. But when they got out of their vehicle, the wanted man aimed his car at them and fled. During a car chase, he lost control of his motor and smashed into trees, which enabled them to arrest him. He is said to have committed violent muggings in El Sauzal, La Matanza and Santa Úrsula, since February, as well as burglaries and car thefts.

THE Seat Ibiza is the most stolen car in Spain, according to a report by Techno Security. And the Audi Q7 and Porsche Cayenne were the two high-end vehicles most popular with thieves. The report collated every reported stolen car across the country last year, and the Ibiza made up 39% of cars pinched, followed by the Ford Fiesta and Volkswagen Golf, both 13%. Statistics also revealed that 52% of vehicle thefts in the country occurred
in Madrid. Malaga was second with 10%, and white cars were most preferred. As vehicles move towards computer security systems, the report says there are more ways to steal them by hacking software. Rafael Ruiz, chief coordinator for Techno Security, said the reason the Ibiza was popular among thieves was its “high demand on the black market”. “Also, it is easier to steal because it has fewer security measures than other brands,” he said. “Its parts are also in high demand because of the Ibiza’s common use across the country.”
LENT is a time of reflection, especially in the lead-up to Easter Week, with Adeje’s main events taking place from Good Friday until Easter Sunday, on 16th April. And, for the first time, the Council, through the municipal school of music and the municipal band, is also offering a cycle of sacred music concerts. Adeje departments of heritage and presidency, headed by Councillors Juan Desiderio Afonso Ruiz and Carmen Rosa González Cabrera, are organising the concerts. González Cabrera is also responsible for EMMA, the official name of the School of Music and Movement. The concerts will be free to the public, and the first two performances will also feature members of EMMA’s chamber
music orchestra. They will be held tomorrow (Saturday) at 8.30pm in San José church, in Los Olivos, and next Friday (24th March) at 7pm in Santa Úrsula church, in the town centre. The third concert, next Saturday (25th March) at 12.30pm, also in Santa Úrsula church, will feature the EMMA junior choir. And at 7pm that day, in the same church, there will be a performance of the Regina Coeli for soprano. The final concert takes place on 1st April at 7pm in the Convento de San Francisco, with the Adeje Patron Municipal band. It will be followed by the opening of an exhibition, the presentation of the Easter Week poster and other related programmes.

X Factor singer was paedophile
HE appeared on the X Factor, one of the most popular British talent shows on television, to demonstrate his talent, singing U2’s With Or Without You in 2009.
But even then, there was already a denuncia against 46-year-old Manuel PS for severely abusing his own daughter, a minor, between 1999 and 2004 in Minorca, where he was born. Police put him on a searchand-capture file, but he continued to live a normal life in the UK. But he was finally arrested and, last summer, the Palma Court judged him last summer and sentenced him to 23½ years after he was found guilty of paedophilia. He was accused of tying, biting and abusing his daughter from the age of six to 10, between 1999 and 2004, on the island. According to The Mirror, the suspect was living in Liverpool shortly after these events. Three years later, in 2007, the mother of the minor denounced the abuser and told police of his whereabouts. They promptly issued an international arrest warrant. He appeared on the X Factor and other programmes, such as Xtra Factor in 2009, while working at a hospital in Prescot, near Manchester. The fugitive, who lived a normal life during his decade in Britain, seemed unaware that the Spanish authorities were looking for him, presenting himself for prime-time TV shows. But he was eventually arrested when he renewed his passport, and, once back in the Balearic Islands, he was tried and convicted.

Mad Cow Disease rears its ugly head
A NEW case of Mad Cow Disease has been reported by Spain’s Ministry of Agriculture, following routine testing in Salamanca’s Horcajo Medianero village, in western Spain.
The disease, officially known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is a fatal cattle disease that causes a degeneration of the brain and spinal cord. It can be transmitted to humans, if they eat food contaminated with the brain, spinal cord, or digestive tract of infected carcasses. However, the infectious
agent, although highlyconcentrated most in nervous tissue, can be found in virtually all tissues throughout the body, including blood. By June 2014 it had killed 177 people in the UK and 52 elsewhere, mainly in western Europe in countries supplied with UK beef products. Britain was seriously affected
by a huge epidemic in the late Eighties, when more than 180,000 cattle were infected and 4.4m slaughtered during an eradication programme, which tested farmers severely. It also affected other countries, including Spain, where 741 cases were detected between 1995 and 2007.
Scots facing a long haul to become EU members SCOTLAND would have to “join the queue” to gain EU membership admittance if the people voted for independence.
That was the warning from Spain’s Foreign Minister Alfonso Dastis, following SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon’s call for a second referendum on Scottish independence. And Spain could even veto its possible EU membership over fears that it could encourage Catalunya secessionists. “Spain supports the integrity of the UK and doesn’t encourage breaks or division in any of the the EU member states,” said Dastis. “We prefer that things continue as as they are. But if Scotland ends up being independent, our stance is that it cannot remain in the European
Union and will have to join the queue.” He added that: “Scotland will have to meet the requirements for membership and hold negotiations.” Sturgeon hopes to hold a second referendum on independence by next year, even though her Scottish National Party
struggled to find allies during a trip to Spain to find support for Scotland gaining access to the EU single market. During a visit to Madrid, the party’s European spokesman, Stephen Gethins, told Spanish MPs that Scotland’s bid to keep single-market status was totally different from
Catalonia’s independence claims. Gethins also gave reassurances that the SNP would remain neutral on the issue of Catalan independence. He was met by centreleft PSOE and far-left Podemos MPs, but not one MP from Mariano Rajoy’s Popular Party was there.

Hollande’s bad choice?
By Carol
at currencies direct
AT the beginning of last week, the Pound was sticking around the 1.15 mark. This was partly down to the UK services PMI being lower than forecast. But it wasn’t helped by comments from French President, Francois Hollande, who offered his opinion that the “UK has made a bad choice at a bad moment” in thinking that Brexit would enable a strategic partnership with the US. Sterling was also affected when a Theresa May spokesperson said the PM wasn’t going to offer parliament a veto option on the Brexit deal, for fear that EU leaders would be inclined to form a bad one.
Prior to the Spring Budget, we asked our clients what they thought the impact on Sterling would be. The majority expected a positive effect, with positive feedback on UK economic growth, while others thought Sterling would suffer. But the minority were closest to the mark. Their comments indicated
that they expected some movement in the shortterm, but the Pound would then settle back to previous levels seen over the last few weeks. There were no real surprises in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s announcement because much of it had been pre-announced, and the Pound weakened in the run-
up, without recovering much in the aftermath of Philip Hammond’s statement. News from the US and Eurozone boosted the Dollar and Euro, which added to the Pound’s run of losses and the ECB (European Central Bank) presented a surprisingly-optimistic policy statement. The markets started this
week with the Pound back at 1.14+ against the euro on Monday morning, having recovered from its recent low of 1.13. Scotland’s First Minister, Nicola Sturgeon, is still determined to push for another Scottish independence referendum, although it is understood that this would be towards the end of 2018 at the earliest. By this time, the Brexit negotiations should be well on their way to completion and, therefore, the vote for independence could have less impact on the UK economy. In the days ahead, there will be a lot of news, which means more volatility is likely. We have the upcoming Dutch elections and a possible US interest rate rise. The triggering of Article 50 is now imminent, which will open the door to starting formal negotiations with the EU. Figures of interest this week will have been the UK employment data on Wednesday, and the latest Bank of England interestrate decision yesterday (Thursday).
European Court calls time on the dear help-lines Chinese imports’ scam may cost the UK a fortune BRITAIN might
By mariano zunino siri

THERE is more good news for consumers from the European Court which, fortunately, seems to be the guardian of consumers’ rights.
One German company, specialising in electrical equipment, had a website offering after-sales telephone numbers with a 0180 prefix (similar to 902 in Spain). The cost of a call to this special number was higher than a standard call, either local or mobile. A German customer association asked the Regional Court for an interpretation of the EU’s Consumer Rights Directive. And, according to such Directives, the Member States must ensure that trade-operator telephone
lines for customers cannot be charged at more than the “basic tariff”, although the Directive doesn’t actually define the concept of “basic tariff”. With this judgement, however, the European Court states that the concept of “basic tariff” must be interpreted to mean that the cost of a call to a trader’s telephone helpline, which is printed on a client contract, cannot exceed the standard call, charged locally, for a landline or mobile. The main reason for this
is consumer protection, because, if they feel the call charges are too high, they will stop ringing after-sales. That means they lose their consumer rights and guarantees, from contracts they have entered into. Furthermore, the Court clarified that provided the limit on the cost of a standard call is respected for these lines, the trader can still obtain benefits from the calls. That’s because telephony profits are not the motivation for the ruling.
have to repay billions of pounds in lost custom duties after failing to halt a Chinese import scam, which cost Spain and other countries vast sums.
The fraud involved false invoices being used to allow textiles and shoes to be imported without being taxed. The EU anti-fraud office, OLAF, has accused the UK of ignoring rampant use of the fake invoices between 2013 and 2016. The organisation said it had “repeatedly drawn the attention of the UK
customs authorities (HMRC) over the last years to the scale of the phenomenon, and to the ongoing revenue losses”. The country could now face a hefty fine, following OLAF’s recommendation “that the European Commission recovers the money from the United Kingdom”. As customs’ duties go directly into the EU budget, the EC will now decide whether or not to seek recompense. The scheme is said to have cost Germany, France, Spain and Italy around 3.2bn euros in lost national sales tax revenue. The fine would come at an especially sensitive time as Britain paves the way to its Brexit (divorce) from the EU.

Britain at War
Saturday 18th March, BBC2, 19.30
2017 marks the centenary year of the establishment of Imperial War Museums. It was founded while the First World War was still raging - and over the past century, IWM has expanded hugely (with five sites including the Churchill War Rooms and HMS Belfast). This programme shares stories of those who have lived, fought and died in conflicts involving Britain and the Commonwealth. Presented by Falklands veteran and charity campaigner Simon Weston CBE, it will look at ten key objects from the IWM’s collection. Each of the objects will have a special ‘advocate’ to explore what it reveals about the story of conflict: Bear Grylls ventures onto HMS Belfast; Al Murray looks at a Spitfire at Duxford; the artists Cornelia Parker and Steve McQueen discuss how they have responded to war and loss in their work; Kate Adie (pictured) tells the remarkable tale of the typewriter in the Churchill War Rooms; Dame Kelly Holmes meets the extraordinary Johnson Beharry VC to hear about his experiences in the Iraq War; and Anita Rani explores the incredible heroism of one soldier in the British-Indian Army.

The 2017 Los Cristianos International Carnival, with Las Vegas as its theme, is packed with magic, music, luxury, entertainment and fun, a vision reflected by designer Luis Marrero in the official Carnival poster, which also mirrors the eternal battle between good and evil typical of these days around Lent. Make your restaurant stand out!
Face the facts By Carl
from Robot
“How do you know what styles suit clients best?” is what we are asked all the time in our salon. It’s all down to a matter of face shapes, and how we were taught to analyse them. This is what tells us exactly what’s going to compliment a client the most. When new clients walk in the salon, the first thing
we see is their hair, then their face shapes, and we look to see if they match. This may sound judgemental, but it’s how a good stylist can change the shape of your face, and hide slight defects, too. These can be anything from a high forehead to a long jawline, overly-large cheeks, and even prominent features such as noses or ears. Most stylists aren’t monsters who criticise for the sake of it. We are here to make you the best versions of yourselves. We love sending out clients, both new and regular, with a different look and feeling so much better in themselves. This is why we train for so many years to pick instantly on what is
going to suit you the best, and do the most for your image. Find out your face shape by looking in a mirror with your hair pulled back. With lipstick, draw around your face on the mirror to show yourself exactly what frame you have. If you’re still unsure, your stylist will tell you immediately, and that’s the basis of finding the haircut that’s going to get you so many more compliments. Receiving a hug, or seeing a client getting emotional after a hair makeover, is what our jobs as stylists are all about. Call us at Robot for your free consultation, to discover the style that’s best for you and your face shape.
Stars in stripes
By Carl Pattison ONE hot trend to look out for this coming summer is all that is striped. Whether vertical, horizontal or geometric, clashing or complementing, it’s one pattern that suits all sizes and shapes. Go for wide stripes if you’re a smaller frame, and choose broad bands to create your stand-out look. For a slimming effect, those with larger frames should stick to vertical stripes, never horizontal, unless they want to accentuate an area. Colours to look out for this summer are all the primary shades; reds, blues, blacks, whites and
yellows. It’s not a look that works too well with pastels, because you need to create a statement, and not blend in. If you don’t want to
wear your stripes, carry them in the form of a bag, or walk your fashion in a new pair of heels. Mix up your stripes to clash together in separates, but don’t overdo it by going head-to-toe in them. If you’re going for a coloured, bold stripe, then add in that shade on a simpler, one-coloured item; for example, a skirt in block colour, and a striped top. This look is easily overdone, so be careful how you choose to create your lines. Find your own way to create one of this summer’s hottest trends, and remember to put your spin on this classic look.
IF you own a bar or restaurant in Tenerife, you will be very aware of the amount of competition there is to attract customers to your business.
First impressions are therefore very important, and one of the main ways you can influence this is through furniture and lighting. Years ago, it was quite common to see bars with cheap, white terrace furniture. Nowadays, it is more likely that you will see some quite luxurious furniture in various colours and styles, including comfortable cushions, making the terrace area look more like a luxury lounge. This change is partly due to people generally upgrading their properties, but changes in technology and materials mean that there is a much wider choice of available furniture and fittings. As with any business, practical matters are very important. Any external furniture chosen must be able to withstand the strong sunlight and occasional rainfall that we have in Tenerife. It should also be easy to clean, which probably means that it can be hosed, or at least
wiped down, to remove dust. Any cushions should be water-anddirt resistant. If the furniture needs to be put away or stacked, it should be light enough to be easily moved, which, on the terrace, may mean an aluminium frame and resin cover. Inside a restaurant, the furniture will set the scene. The materials used should be practical and easy to keep clean, and the chairs should be comfortable to encourage your guests to stay longer. Using smaller tables that can be pushed together or separated, according to demand, will give your business more flexibility. Colour and design can be brought into the area by the use of tablecloths and/ or runners that are easy to wash, and an accent colour can be picked up through small accessories and
pictures, which you can then change if you want to give your property a different look for the seasons. The use of curtains or blinds will depend on your type of property, but will be equally important in creating an ambience that will encourage customers to choose your business over others, and to stay once they are there. When people are walking past a strip of competing bars, what could make them choose your establishment? Luxuriouslooking furniture, comfortable cushions and ambient lighting could be the investment that will make your business stand out from the crowd. For any of the products mentioned, free assistance with design and planning, and project management of refurbishments, please contact Deco Nuevo on 922 789729.

Food review: Alejandra Cafe Bar & Grill, Costa del Silencio, by Gordon Slayney
Home-made, and heavenly! WHEN I was asked to provide a food review at a restaurant in my village, I jumped at the chance to revisit an eaterie I used to frequent a lot.
Work commitments means it has been quite difficult for me to get there recently. But the Alejandra Cafe Bar & Grill has been under new management for the last three months, and I was intrigued to see whether the same high standard was being maintained. I wasn’t disappointed! My friend Julie and I arrived and were shown to our reserved table by Chris, our waiter for the evening. The first thing you notice is the smell of freshly-prepared food already being cooked, which made me even hungrier than before we got there. It was simply divine. Before the restaurant was taken over, everything, and I mean everything, was 100% home-made. And, to my delight, Chris confirmed that was still the case. Drinks were ordered as we perused the menu, which is available in English, Spanish, French, German, Italian, Belgium and Norwegian! For starters, I chose the creamy, garlic mushrooms, which came served on a baguette base and worked really well, just melting in your mouth. Julie opted for garlic prawns and soon, the starters were polished off to our satisfaction The
main courses arrived and I’d chosen cheese-stuffed chicken, wrapped in bacon and, again, served with a mushroom garlic sauce, accompanied by roast potatoes and a separate large bowl of vegetables. I do wish more restaurants would separate the vegetables because I am not a
big veg eater, and, by serving them this way, you literally choose what you like. Suffice to say, the meal was delicious and very filling. Julie had the shoulder of lamb, served with mash and vegetables. The lamb just fell of the bone and our empty plates paid testament to just how delicious
our main meals were. The only problem, if you can call it a problem, was that we just couldn’t manage a dessert. I was disappointed at myself because, as you can see from the picture, they look and, believe me, taste amazing. I know because I’ve had desserts there before! Again, they are all homemade, and the choice of desserts is immense: chocolate fudge cake, sticky-toffee pudding, apple pie, apple-andberry crumble, lemon cheesecake, Baileys cheesecake, lemon-drizzle tart, fruit or plain scones, plus Victoria sponge and amaretto trifle. Honestly, the restaurant is worth a visit just for these desserts! Chris and Danny, who also helped serve as the place became busier, looked after our every need, and both went about their duties so professionally. Thank you for looking after us. At this point. I managed to have a chat with new owner Graham Farqhuar. He has lived on the island for four years and this is his first foray into the restaurant industry after, initially, setting his sights on a fishand-chip shop business. But he told me he was so glad he opted for the Alejandra. He said it had been a challenge to live up to the expectations set by the previous owners. He accepted the challenge fullon, and he’s enjoying every minute of his new venture. Graham has made a couple
of tweaks to the menu, for the good as far as I can see, and from comments I’d heard from locals prior to our visit. It truly was a memorable dining experience and one I will, no doubt, experience again very soon. The restaurant has an indoor dining area and also a heated outside area as well, which, Graham says, has been a blessing over the last few months as temperatures dropped at night. The Alejandra is open from 9am-9pm Mon-Thurs and Saturday. Sunday opening is from 9am to 4pm, when Sunday Lunches are the speciality, giving you the choice of Beef, Pork, Chicken, Lamb … and even haggis! If you don’t fancy a Sunday Lunch, you can still order off the main menu. The restaurant is closed on Friday. Private parties and business lunches can be catered for with prior arrangement. If you wish to book, which I highly recommend, contact the restaurant on 922 734 802, or you can email alejandra.car.bar@hotmail. com and see for yourself what delights this fabulous restaurant has to offer by going to their facebook page, which is Alejandra bar and grill You can also read the testimonials the restaurant fully deserve on tripadvisor. Thank you again Graham and staff for your hospitality, and a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

Swallows swoop with a wonderful Whitechapel THE Swallows Drama Group excelled themselves with this year’s offering of The Whitechapel Music Hall 1888. And so did their supporters! For three nights, they packed into the Showtime venue home of The Sound of Musicals - and enabled the drama group to raise a record total 4,748 euros for the Swallows’ cancer fund. An elated Carole Hart, who runs the Los Cristianos-based Swallows group with husband Mike, said: “I am sure that those who
went will agree that having a proper stage, lighting and sound made all the difference. “Feedback received is that you all thoroughly enjoyed the show. And, having been in it this year, I can tell you how much time, effort and devotion the cast put in, with some of them working two jobs. I don’t know how they found the time!” She added: “Many
thanks to Showtime owners Chris Elkington and Mark Wilson, who gave us the venue free of charge, and to the staff who work there, who also gave us their time for free over the three nights. “And for La Porchetta restaurant in the Apolo Centre, whose staff listened twice a week as we practised. “I must mention Janet Roberts, who makes
the majority of the costumes. She is such a talented lady and works so hard. Her helpers backstage this year were Val Sunderland and Anne Staples. “Thank you girls, and thanks to Maureen Bird and Ann Richards, who did the raffles each night. Also to Paul Lowe, our musical director and a wonderful musician.”
But Carole reserved her biggest thankyou for director Mike Huntington, who, as ever, took charge of the show. “He always manages to pull it all together, somehow,” she said. She also praised the audiences, saying: “As always, you made it so special. Your generosity and support overwhelms me.” June Wilson, who saw
the show with her husband, Ron, said: “It was absolutely fabulous, made even more so because we both come from the East End of London, where ‘Whitechapel’ was set. “It was so exciting because we knew all the streets mentioned, and it brought back many happy memories.” Ron added: “I was particularly chuffed when they mentioned Flower and Dean Street, in Aldgate, because I knew someone who lived there. “And the Three Tuns pub, off Commercial Street, is where they start the Jack The Ripper walks.”
are very good to me and it is much better than being on the street. I have a best friend and room mate called Mandy who I get on really well with. We have great fun together. Specially when we are out walking and exploring with our voluntarios. They tell me I am one of their favourites. All
I know is I love being with them. While that’s all good, nothing beats having your own cosy home and loving family, though. That’s what I really, really want most of all. I’m a friendly guy, very affectionate and docile, and I love people and also other dogs. I like to have lots of space so a nice garden would be good. I am very well behaved. In fact, Mandy and I stay in the yard overnight while our chums are in their kennels. That’s because we are trusted to be good and to look after things. Do you have a special
place in your home and heart for me? In return, I promise to be a loyal and loving companion.” If you would like to meet Ramos, please get in touch with us in any of the ways mentioned below. Captains lose their way THE Direct Telecom Pool League is slowly drawing to a close for this season, and Tuesday night saw the singles tournament’s preliminary round being played at various venues. On Amarilla Golf, at the Terrace Bar, both home team captains had been drawn to play there, and, with home table advantage, they both had a decent chance. However, they both fluffed their lines. Finbarr was up first against Wilson, but he didn’t really get into the game and was soon out. Adi played okay against Jeff and fancied his chances, but he rattled a straight black to lose the first game. He then rattled his last red to leave Jeff with an easy yellow and black … and they were both out. Roscoe was up next, against Ben, and he found the going tough as his opponent seemed to have luck on his side. Try as he might, Roscoe couldn’t make headway and he also fell by the wayside. Paul Tregent then eased through his quarter-final and semi-final to face Wilson in the final after the latter had knocked out Ben. And Paul played the better pool to win, progressing to finals night in the winners’ pot. Wilson is also there, but in the losers’ pot! It was a tough line-up at Gaffers bar with two of
the A team players on the table. Top Six Dave fell at the first hurdle, though, and Lee managed to reach the semi-finals before going out. It was a hard group to come through and the level of pool on display was high. But, eventually it came down to Wayne against Geoff in the final. Although they both were through to finals night, somebody still had to be a winner and Geoff drew strength from his Werther’s Originals to get one over on Wayne and emerge victorious. In Yates Bar, Stevie managed to come through the first match, despite having spent the previous two hours in hospital. That set him up a quarterfinal against Craig, which he also won. Graeme and Wes also eased through to the semis, with Graeme up against Ralph and Wez against Stevie. Graeme made short work of Ralph to get to the final, as did Stevie, but that was as good as his night got be-
cause Graeme beat him 2-1. At Dreamers, it was another stiff draw as Gav and Tommy were both drawn at home. That would have made some final, but they drew each other in the quarters and Gav claimed bragging rights, eventually winning 2-1. Kev, who was having a good night, raced through to the finals without dropping a set. He was joined by Alan, who had played just one game, thanks to an earlier bye. With Kev having more games under his belt, he continued his fine form and again didn’t drop a frame, claiming his place in the winners’ pot on finals night. Around the corner at Bluebell, it was another fierce draw and so difficult to predict a winner! Grandad and Mark looked favourites, but they met in the semis and Mark just got the better of his opponent to reach the final. Ian had gone about his business quietly, taking the scalps of JT and Scott along the way, to secure his
place alongside Mark. But Ian, who was in good form, gave Mark no chance in the final, taking a 2-0 victory. There were a few bodies down in Exiles, but the lads there didn’t let that dampen their spirits. Shammy and Mark came through the quarters, beating Ian and Macaroni respectively. Awaiting them in the semis were Blair and Fritzel. Mark eased past Blair, but Fritzel had to fight against Shammy to get to the final. Once there, though, he didn’t slow down and toppled Mark 2-0. It really was an open field at James Place, the bookies having trouble deciding on a favourite. Early front-runners from the quarter-finals were Mal, Stash, Harry and Terry, and the semi-finals also looked tough to call. Mal and Stash needed all three frames before the latter came out on top. but Harry took just two frames to ease past Terry. This set up a Harry-Stash final, which looked a 50-50 shot. It was another threeframe clash, but Harry just got the better of his opponent and goes through to finals night as a winner. There is still plenty of juice in the season, and on Tuesday it’s the PJ Electrical Services Cup and Plate. Amarilla Golf ’s Terrace Bar again hosts what is always a well-supported night. Our version of the FA Cup always throws up shocks, and no one could have predicted the finalists. Palms Elite are strong fa-
vourites, but they face a James Hammers C side who are looking for a historic double. With the Division Two title safely tucked up in their top pocket, they have nothing to lose. Tony Macaroni and James are top-flight sticks, and, if they can make their mark, they have a big, big chance. Palms Elite are a solid outfit, well-led by captain Jet, and they have enjoyed an excellent run recently. Wayne, Graeme and Harry are a superb backbone and they have support. Yet they rarely dominate matches, and, if Hammers C can keep it tight, Palms have been known to fold. It’s set up wonderfully. The same applies to the Plate final. Treehouse A finished the season in style, but fell apart on the final day. Two wins would have seen them finish third but they were chinned by Dreamers and then thumped by Hammers A. Will that leave a mark? Phoenix Potters have had an outstanding campaign. Tipped for a relegation battle, they have been top-six all season. They are wellseasoned, and you can see them holding their nerve. There would be no more popular winners, and maybe they have this in them. Geoff is flying, and, if Elvis Dave can back him up, they can grab the spoils. Whatever happens, it will be a night to enjoy on the two tables. Play gets underway at 8pm.
Wayward City need more than Pep talk PEP Guardiola is steeling himself for Manchester City’s biggest overhaul since Sheikh Mansour bought the club in 2008, with the future of as many as 18 players in the balance this summer. The head coach faces a difficult close season following City’s elimination from the Champions League by Monaco. The tie ended 6-6 on aggregate after his team lost 3-1 at Stade Louis II
in Wednesday night’s last16 second leg, the hosts progressing thanks to their three away goals in the first leg. Pep can expect to have a treasure chest of a minimum £150 million, before any wage budget, to spend on players. But who goes, who stays and who will be released? That’s his dilemma. Seven first-team squad members are out of contract in July: Yaya Touré, Gaël
Clichy, Pablo Zabaleta, Willy Caballero, Jesús Navas, Bacary Sagna and young central defender Tosin Adarabioyo. There are also five on loan: Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Samir Nasri, Wilfried Bony and Jason Denayer. And there are question marks over Sergio Agüero, dropped for Gabriel Jesus until the Brazilian broke a metatarsal, Vincent Kompany, suffering another
injury-blighted campaign, and Aleksandar Kolarov, whose deal ends in summer 2019, plus the out-of-favour Fabian Delph, Fernando and Kelechi Iheanacho. This totals 18 players, and, though Guardiola would not be able to replace every one, he is expected to prune the group considerably and focus on tightening up the defence. Goalkeeper Hart has indicated that he expects
to leave, and, with his replacement, Claudio Bravo, proving a flop, Guardiola must address who will be next season’s No.1 keeper, with Benfica’s Ederson Moraes of interest. The head coach also intends adding full-backs (left and right), with Tottenham’s Kyle Walker and Danny Rose in the frame. And centreback Aymeric Laporte, at Athletic Bilbao, is still on Pep’s wanted list.

Leaders’ last lap! RATHER like this week’s Cheltenham Festival, all eyes are on the winning post as our runners and riders chase down the last few legs needed to claim the title. Indeed, both divisions could be decided this week, although Division 2 requires a heavy victory by The Tavern. In Division 1 however, long-time leaders Scruffy Macs need to hurdle just three points from, The Pub, to ensure first place in the winner’s enclosure! A valiant effort by Pas
O Nadas earned them a 6-2 win over the Playboys, but it may only be enough for second spot. There may well be a stewards’ inquiry for third place, with Gaffers, Phoenix and The Pub all in the running. Of that trio, only Phoenix played last week, picking up a handy six points at Boothen. Elsewhere, Spear Chuckers cemented at least a 6th-place finish with a 6-2 victory over Palms Sports Bar. In Division 2, Palms Pool Bar look to have fallen at the final hurdle after being unseated 5-3 at Naughty Nautas. This leaves The Tavern needing eight points from tonight’s fixture (Friday) with Picassos to guarantee top spot, after their photo-finish draw at Bar 180. They will have to giddyup to do that, but you never know! The

Superleague in their sights Iberostar’s comfort zone Iberostar Tenerife 82 Estudiantes 63
ALL the excitement and skill of beach volleyball can also be enjoyed with the indoor variety. And Arona Tenerife Sur are poised to storm the ladies’ national Superleague. There are just six games for them to negotiate and tomorrow (Saturday), they travel to Mallorca to take on CIDE in the first clash. They begin their home
campaign the following Saturday (25th March) when CV Madrid Chamberi visit Los Cristianos for a 7pm match. Coach Gabriel Navarro is confident they can end their winning season with a move up to the big stage after seeing off the other hopefuls. The sports hall, by the outdoor swimming complex, has seen the men’s team play at top
national level before, and now the ladies want to follow in their footsteps. The games are played with six players on court at a time. Arona finished second in their 18-game league schedule, and came through an elimination group to set up their possible promotion. They are one of four teams now competing for two Superleague places.
TOP of the Liga Endesa is proving to be a comfortable perch for Iberostar Tenerife. And another powerful away victory at Estudiantes ensured they maintained a two-point gap on the big guns of Real Madrid and Barcelona. It’s not just the winning that’s important; Tenerife are showing they can kill off a game by blitzing their opponents. They led all the way and saved the best for the final quarter, taking that 28-15 to shake off any resistance.
All the squad are contributing to the success, and latest signing Tariq Kirksay had his best game in a Tenerife vest, topscoring with 16 points. Georgios Bogris gave good support with his 12 points. This Sunday (19th), Tenerife are at home to Valencia at 5.30pm in La Laguna. Every game now is massive, and the draw has been
made for the final eight teams in the European Champions League. Tenerife face French team Asvel Lyon away on Tuesday (21st) or Wednesday (22rd), and back at home on 28th or 29th March, once the TV coverage has been arranged. Glory awaits on two fronts, but the club are already enjoying their best-ever season.

CD Tenerife
Bruised, battered, unbeaten! By Colin Kirby
WHAT an education for Tenerife! Getafe were simply nasty, but Tenerife took all they could throw at them and came away with a lastgasp draw. Hard, physical play is part of football, but this was GBH, in the guise of the beautiful game. Pep Marti, who again was forced to make changes, started with Inaki at leftback, with a midfield return for Aitor Sanz. True, he’s something of a veteran now, but he had a magnificent game and was at the heart of most of his team’s best moves. Amath was his speedy self up front, and, with strike partner Choco Lozano, they were targets for crunching, reckless tackles. The ref, who didn’t seem keen to offer protection, also gifted Getafe a 20thminute lead. Home-striker Molina ran
Getafe 2 CD Tenerife 2
past Inaki and went down, despite the lack of contact. He even grinned as he put the spot-kick past Dani Hernandez, Daylight robbery! But there’s plenty of character in the Tenerife squad, who just got on with it and endured the knocks. Amath and Choco both

had good chances, but, more often than not, were shoved off the ball. And a boot to the stomach of Vitolo was straight out of a gangster film! The second half had just started when Getafe’s Lacen fouled Inaki in clear view, but there was no second booking for him,
which would have led to his removal. It could have been a game-changing moment, but Tenerife pushed on, regardless. Aitor Sanz saw Inaki breaking down the wing and fed him the ball. And Inaki’s cross fell perfectly for Choco to tuck the ball home for the equaliser. Yet Getafe are a good side when they concentrate on football, but Dani Hernandez denied a couple of their better efforts with some reliable saves. Captain Suso, playing his 200th game in a Tenerife shirt, gave way after 74 minutes to Omar and his fresh, “unharmed” legs. Choco was also subbed after working hard and doing his bit in front of goal. With five minutes left, Faurin took advantage of some confusion in the Tenerife defence to earn a 2-1 lead. And there was still plenty of drama left.
Cristo Gonzalez was brought on in place of defender Raul Camara for a final, four-minute burst, and the switch worked a treat. Aaron sped down the wing and flashed in a cross from the left, where Cristo was available to head the ball in the net for a welldeserved draw. Tenerife slipped to fourth place, but Getafe, breathing down their necks for a play-off spot, knew they had dropped two points … perfect payback for earlier injustices. It was another part of the growing process for Tenerife coach Pep Marti and his squad. Their mental strength served them well and will be an asset when the play-offs arrive. This Sunday, Reus are the visitors to Santa Cruz at 4pm, and another 15,000plus crowd, together with the debut of Japanese signing Gaku Shibasaki, will add more anticipation to the occasion.

PROMOTION playoffs are a little distant, but they’re still in sight for Marino after this strong performance in Gran Canaria. The hosts took the lead after 20 minutes, when Cesar pulled the play wide of Marino keeper Marko before slipping the ball under his diving body. But Marko, who later sustained an injury
which prevented him from continuing in the second half, was replaced by Petar. It took just a few minutes of the restart for Marino to equalise. A good move saw a neat back-heel come to Lolo Armario, who swept the ball into the net with a cool finish. The draw leaves Marino in eighth place, and they will be looking to climb the table on Sunday when they take on Union Viera at home, kick-off 12.25pm.
IT was another tale of North and South as Tenerife’s two Premier League football teams experienced a goal avalanche, but from different ends of the scale. Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife came back from being a goal down to win 8-1 at home against Fundacion Albacete in El Medano, but La Laguna-based Tacuense had their worst-ever away game, losing 11-0 at Atletico Madrid. Another near-700 crowd, who packed into the El Medano ground, were stunned when Carla gave the visitors a shock lead after 20 minutes. But Granadilla showed their composure and, gradually, took a grip on the game. But though Ana levelled within three minutes, it took a bit more patience before they pulled ahead, Ayano netted after 41 minutes, and they went in for the break feeling good
after Sara Tui made it 3-1. It was one-way traffic after that, and keeper Noelia Gil was able to sit back and watch her team-mates add further goals from Cindy, and an Eva Llamas header. Coach Toni Ayala made full use of the subs. Mery came of the bench and stretched the lead to 6-1. Natalia and Patri then helped themselves to
late goals to leave the visitors shell-shocked, and Granadilla riding high in sixth spot. But poor old Tacuense will want to forget their drubbing. Even as the league’s bottom side, they hadn’t suffered anything so cruel as conceding 11 unanswered goals. Sadly, there seems little hope of them escaping the drop.
