ISIS takes blame for Westminster terror! TERRORIST group ISIS has claimed responsibility for Wednesday’s horrific Westminster attack, which has led to five deaths and as many as 40 injured, some seriously. And Prime Minister Theresa May, who said the attack was “sick and depraved”, revealed yesterday (Thursday), that the killer, 52-year-old Khalid Masood, was a British-born jihadist from Kent, probed by MI5 “some years ago” over links to “violent extremism”. But he was deemed “peripheral”. Eight people have been arrested in the wake of the tragedies, and six addresses were raided in London, Birmingham and elsewhere. The horror began when Masood, a father of three, armed with two large knives, drove his rented, grey Hyundai i40 along a pavement over Westminster Bridge, killing two pedestrians and injuring many more. The car then crashed into railings outside the Houses of Parliament. The attacker then rushed at the gates in front of the Houses of Parliament, stabbing to death police officer Keith Palmer, a 48-year-old husband and father, before being shot dead himself by officers. Already, the public have raised £100,000 for his wife and children. A police-led campaign has raised more than £100,000 for his family. The Metropolitan Police Federation, representing police in the area, reached 50% of its £200,000 fundraising target on JustGiving,

within 24 hours of the fatal stabbing. Mark Rowley, Acting Deputy Commissioner and head of counter-terrorism at the

Metropolitan Police, paid tribute to Pc Palmer, saying: “He was someone who left for work today expecting to return home at the end of

his shift, and he had every right to expect that would happen.” A “heartbroken” former colleague, Tobias Ellwood, now the Conservatives’ Foreign Office minister, also honoured the “lovely man” he had known for 25 years. The pair had served together in the Royal Artillery before PC Palmer became a policeman. And Mr Ellwood, a former Army officer whose brother died in the Bali terrorist bombing in 2002, attempted a mouthto-mouth resuscitation of Pc Palmer, sadly, without success. One woman who died during the Bridge incident was Aysha Frade, a 43-year-old British national from Spain, who taught the language at the nearby DLD College. She was crossing Westminster Bridge to collect her schoolchildren, aged eight and 11, when she was struck by the attacker’s car. Mrs Frade’s relatives, in Betanzos, Spain, were notified of her death later

that day. Another victim was American Kurt Cochran, celebrating his 25th wedding anniversary with his wife, Melissa, who was seriously injured. A group of French schoolchildren, aged 1516, from the private Lycée Saint-Joseph school in Brittany. were among those also targeted on the Bridge, and two were said to be in a “critical” condition. Four university students from Lancashire were also among the injured, but one woman, Andreea Cristea, fearing the worst as she thought the car was aiming in her direction, jumped over the bridge into the River Thames. She was later rescued, unharmed. Mrs May, who was not involved in the five-hour, House of Commons lockin, praised the bravery of police officers and said any attempt to defeat the values Parliament stands for was “doomed to failure”. Meanwhile, Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson delivered a Churchillian message to ISIS, the so-called Islamic State group, telling members that British people would “never, never, never, never surrender” to their war on terror. St Mary’s Hospital in Paddington, central London, has taken in a number of injured people, involved in the attack. Dr Julian Redhead, medical director at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, said: “We can confirm that St Mary’s received eight casualties yesterday from the major incident in Westminster. “The hospital continues to run smoothly and we are very grateful to all our staff, and those of the emergency services, for their fantastic response.”

Adeje and Arona help form new national tourism group ADEJE Mayor José Miguel Rodríguez Fraga, along with Arona counterpart José Julian Mena, have joined forces to help establish a new alliance among Spain’s most important tourism destinations. Gran Canaria’s San Bartolomé de Tirajana Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez is also part of the package. The group, inaugurated on Tuesday, has the full backing of the World Tourism Organisation, in whose Madrid headquarters the proceedings took place, and that of CEHAT, the Spanish federation of hotels and apartments. Five other Spanish boroughs were also present as founder members: Salou, Benidorm, Calviá, Lloret de Mar and Torremolinos. And the eight destinations between them host an impressive 10.5 million visitors annually. Matilde Asián, tourism’s National Secretary for State, attended the meeting, with Carlos Vogeler, WTO director for relations, and CEHAT President Juan Molas. Members will also encourage participation among the various destinations by applying for public funding, given their strategic importance for the national economy. This, in turn, will help improve infrastructures and offers quality services for residents and visitors alike. Adeje Mayor Rodríguez Fraga said: “We want to intensify promotion and development and advances, geared towards improving the product and the destination.

“Our main objective will be to improve the holiday destinations, and create local wealth and quality employment, while always bearing in mind the wellbeing of the people working and living there.” He added: “We believe the coming together of these eight important boroughs will also help the advance of new technologies in development and innovation. “We also want to promote co-operation between the different administrations, companies and agencies involved in the sector.” Arona Mayor José Julian

Mena said: “All our destinations play key roles in the local and national economy. Also, they all experience pressure on the resources and the infrastructures available, which has an effect on our residents. “This is why we have to look for further investment from regional, national and European authorities.” San Bartolomé de Tirajana Mayor Marco Aurelio Pérez added that the combined force was a great step forward, and would assist in the work along the Maspalomas-Costa Canaria regions.

Rajoy sets himself an impossible task SPANISH Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says he is ready to do “the impossible” to see this political term through. But, he admits, he needs “a bit of political stability in order to do so”.

His comments came after a week in which opposition parties in the Spanish Congress stonewalled a Government decree, aimed at liberalising the dockworkers’ sector, which allows companies to hire non-union employees. Brussels has been pressuring Spain to bring the industry in line with EU legislation, and the Government is facing heavy fines for failing to do so. And conservative Rajoy is aware that the Socialists have promised to provide an

active opposition over the course of his term in power. But at last Thursday’s vote, Rajoy’s ruling Popular Party (PP), which leads a minority government, was able to secure the approval of the small Basque Nationalist Party (PNV) only, while

other congressional forces opposed the decree. “It is necessary for episodes like the dockers never to happen again,” said Rajoy on Sunday in Málaga. But his administration is facing further trouble from an opposition which has

Major EU headache for Britain’s airlines

EASYJET is reported to be in the process of establishing an EU operating company, to obtain an air-operating certificate.

It follows a warning by EU chiefs to all UK-based airlines that, after Brexit, they must relocate their headquarters if they want to keep their continental routes through Europe. But the company is adamant it will continue to be based at Luton Airport. Executives at major carriers have been reminded they would also need to sell off shares to European nationals, to operate on routes across the continent, such as Malaga to Berlin, according to a report in The Guardian. This would leave airlines such as easyJet in an awkward position, because European routes have become increasingly-important assets to their business models. Decisions to move bases to the EU could lead to a significant loss of jobs in Britain. And, should negotiators fail to reach an agreement similar to the “open-skies” deal granted to EU members, the UK could impose its own ownership rules, which would prevent airlines such as Dublin-based Ryanair from flying UK domestic routes. A Ryanair spokesman said the company would “adapt” to changes, but Michael O’Leary, who runs the business, has pointed out the dangers of a “cliff-edge” Brexit, criticising the “mildly-lunatic optimism” of the British Government.

vowed not to let Rajoy rest on his laurels after he was reinstated late last year, thanks to tacit help from the Socialists. The latter have vowed to exercise active opposition throughout the term, while the PP’s only semi-reliable ally, reform-

party Ciudadanos, has lately taken a step back because of disagreements with the PP over anti-corruption policy. Rajoy’s conservative team has already accepted that it will have to push its budget plan through, without Socialist support. The Cabinet will give the go-ahead on 31st March, after which it is expected to undergo a long parliamentary process before being passed sometime in late June, according to the executive’s own estimates. But there will be up to 13 key votes between now and then, during which the Socialists will be holding primaries and a congress to elect a new party leader. It follows last October’s débâcle, when thenSecretary General Pedro Sánchez walked out in protest over the party’s decision to help Rajoy back into office, to avoid a third national election.

ETA set to disband BASQUE terrorist organisation ETA has announced that it will be telling the French authorities where their weapons caches can be found in a unilateral disarmament plan. The news was made by civilian intermediary JeanNoel Etcheverry, an activist caught up in the Guardia Civil operation which trapped a radical Basque group as it tried to dispose of weapons belonging to ETA. Etcheverry told French newspaper Le Monde: “ETA has made us responsible

for the disarmament of its arsenal, and, by the afternoon of 8th April, ETA will be completely unarmed.”

The Spanish Government says it will be content with ETA’s total dissolution only, and adds that the terrorist group did not hand in its

Among ETA’s most frequent requests is for all its prisoners to be moved to jails in the Basque Country, so they can be near their families. The Basque regional government has called for the laying down of arms to be “unilateral, irreversible, complete, and legal. Neither the French nor the Spanish Home Office has yet approved this initiative, but the process will be supervised by the International Verification Commission, a group of international experts. The organisation has not been active for some years,

Brakes on taxi thief

A KNOWN criminal and drug-addict was arrested by the Guardia Civil early on Wednesday for stealing a taxi from the South Airport.

TEIDE’S two cable cars should be back in business this coming Wednesday, following last week’s dramatic break-down, which left 111 sightseers stranded at the top of the mountain overnight. And while 127 people were rescued on the same Wednesday, the rest were airlifted to safety the following day by three helicopters. The Swiss manufacturing company has now discovered why the cable-cars’ security

system was activated last week, causing the brakes to be applied on both cars. The cable-car company’s technical team, after analysing the problem which left 238 people trapped between the cable cars and the summit station, revealed that the fault originated in the safety brakes, which led to the system blocking. The manufacturer’s spokesman said: “What should have been a conventional control stop became a security stop. “The control stop is meant to slow down the system to check parameters and restarts the cable car in a few seconds, with hardly any delay in the journey.”

He also said that although the system complied “strictly” with all the necessary guidelines and regulations, the configuration had been “reset” so that, in normal circumstances, it will not be activated again. Teide cable-cars’ braking system configuration is inspected and tested every year by the manufacturer, in addition to its continuous monitoring to detect any anomaly. Once the readjustment tasks are completed and the smooth operation of the cable-car system is certified, the huge tourist attraction will reopen to the public in the next few days.

its last attack being a policecar bomb in Palmanova, Mallorca, in 2009. And the last major blast took place on 30th December 2006, when terrorists blew up the car park at Madrid airport’s T4, killing two men. The ETA history, which goes back to the early Seventies, was far more bloodthirsty, involving regular, multiple victims. In fact, even in the midNineties, residents in major cities and coastal areas said they were always on their guard whenever they left the house. At present, ETA’s disarmament has reached an impasse because of the refusal by the Spanish and French governments to get involved.

The cabbie was unloading his passenger’s suitcases from the boot of his VW Caddie at the time. And, as the 33-year-old suspect sped off, other suitcases tumbled out. The incident took place at 7.45am, at which point police were told.

A short time later, thanks to the GPS system, the taxi was found in Taganana Street, San Isidro. The culprit was arrested in a house nearby, occupied by squatters, where officers found stolen items from the taxi, including cash, the driver’s mobile and the GPS device. The suspect had thrown the car keys away on wasteland, but police recovered all the items and returned them to a grateful Emilio, the Cuban cabbie.

Man sells young girlfriend for sex NATIONAL Police officers in Santa Cruz have arrested a 22-yearold man for prostituting a minor, who is also his girlfriend. An anonymous citizen informed the police, who discovered that the man provided security for the minor, and booked her

clients from a hotel in the city. Officers, who removed the girl from the hotel and took her back to her mum, also arrested the man for corruption of a minor. A police report was sent to the Judicial Authority, and the Juvenile Prosecutor’s Office was also notified.

Capital Carnival’s Drumming worth 35m euros up a storm! to Santa Cruz

Continued from Front

Continued from Front The newly-elected Carnival Queen, and the other candidates, will ride the first stream of floats in their spectacular costumes … and a wave of mischief and mayhem will follow. With the creative flair of the costumes, the rhythm of the drummers, and the wild humour, it all adds up to to a must-see afternoon. The parade sets out at 4pm from Paloma Beach apartments, at the market end of the old beach, and works its way slowly up Avenida Juan Carlos to the Cultural Centre. Before then, on Friday night from 9pm, you can catch the Drag Queen Gala at the showground, in the centre of town. Food-anddrink stalls, and a video wall to back the live acts, make the showground the focal point of Carnival fun. Expect it to run into the early hours … so you might as well give in and dance! And if you have bags of energy and enthusiasm, Saturday afternoon’s Daytime Carnival attracts the younger musicfans, with national and international artists pumping it out on the main stage from noon, featuring the top Spanish hits from the 40 Principales charts. There’s also a second stage outside the Cultural Centre because one is simply not enough to hold all that action. And there is plenty of seating for people watching families converge together, with everyone dressing up and enjoying the Carnival

spirit. Look out for the fancy-dress competition down at the old beach on Saturday afternoon, from 1pm in the small plaza, with the statue of the fisherwoman looking over the contestants and dance groups. It’s all very informal as the whole of Los Cristianos is transformed into a party zone. And if your feet are up to it, dancing by the main stage will continue for as long as people are still standing! For something a little different on Sunday morning, there’s a classic and vintage car show from 11am at the showground, followed by a pet contest. The afternoon parade is the jewel in the Carnival crown, drawing thousands of people. But it moves slowly enough to enable everyone to see the sights. Deep breath, and it’s off to Monday night’s final and most bizarre act, The Burial of the Sardine. You’ll never see a sardine this big or so cute. It looks so cheery, considering it is destined to be consumed in flames and fireworks at the beach after a long, slow, funeral procession from the Cultural Centre at 9pm, past the church square and, eventually, on to the beach. The mourning “widows” are loud and tearful in their farewell to the huge fish, yet they recover quickly to dance the wildest wake. It’s all very appropriate for this year’s Las Vegas Carnival theme: fish and betting chips!

SANTA Cruz Town Hall estimates that the city profited by a fabulous total of more than 35m euros during Carnival 2017, thanks mainly to residents, who spent 29.1m. Add that to what the six million tourists forked out while visiting the city, plus what was spent by around 124,000 tourists staying in hotels, from cruise ships and on an excursion trip to the capital. Economic Promotion Councillor Alfonso Cabello pointed out during Tuesday’s presentation of the first municipal economic study on the impact of the

Capital’s Carnival: “This year, we have focused our efforts on attracting tourists staying in the North and South of the Island, going from working with 30 buses last year to 170 this year.” Town Council Mayor José Manuel Bermúdez said the study showed that the Carnival, as well as being the town festival, was also a profitable investment for the city. “The Town Council invests more than 3m euros organising the Carnival, and obtains in exchange more than 35m spent by residents and tourists,” he said. The detailed study, carried out by the Development Society, is based on data collected from 1,200 telephone interviews with people over 15 years old,

between the 6-10th of March 2017. These surveys reveal that the average person attending the Carnival spent almost 80 euros, making a total 26 million. Some 40% of the money went to the food and drink stalls on the streets; 19% in costumes, make-up and accessories; 16% in restaurants, bars and coffee shops; attractions and fairs, 11%; transport, parking and fuel, 10%; and acts and shows, 3%. For the Development Society Delegate Councillor, this year’s success was in tourism promotion, which has make a qualitative leap. “The hotels have been at 90% occupancy, and not only during the main Carnival days but during the whole 17 days of Carnival,” he said.

Junior Carnival Queen was elected on Wednesday night in Los Cristianos. It was won by six-year-old, Ainhoa Vincent Navarro, and the outfit was designed by Victor Mesa.

Put the planet first! ADEJE Council will switch off all lights on the main municipal buildings at 8.30pm during the Earth Hour tomorrow (Saturday).

It is a global campaign run by the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) around the world, embracing 7,000 towns and cities to demonstrate together against climate change. And Adeje’s main municipal buildings will be reduced to shadows for 60 minutes.

Environment Councillor Esther Rivero Vargas said: “We are united in supporting this symbolic gesture against climate change. “Our commitment to the environment is solid, and we are again delighted to join in this worldwide movement, as we have done annually over the last five years.” Earth Hour began on 31st March 2007 in Sydney, Australia. The following October, San Francisco ran a Lights Out programme, inspired by the Sydney Earth Hour. After that, the organisers decided to rally

behind the international event, planned for 2008. Adeje joined in 2012 and has marked the event ever since. Over the years, Earth Hour supporters have advocated successfully for more climate-friendly laws and policies, such as those which have banned plastic in the World Heritage site of the Galapagos Islands. This year in Adeje, floodlights along the Troya and Fañabe beach will be switched off, as will lighting by the Farmers’ Market and Fort House, as well as sports centres, cultural centres,

Council offices etc. The lights will also be dimmed in other municipal zones, such as parks and tourist areas. The Council invites the public to take part in the initiative, joining together with the rest of the world in calling for “a

change to climate change”. Councillor Rivero Vargas said: “Every gesture counts, bringing together the small changes individuals are making in their lives to build a future based on clean energies to benefit the planet.”

An explosive threat by troubled woman

A WOMAN with psychiatric history barricaded herself in her Santa Cruz apartment in Santa María del Mar and threatened to blow it up with a bottle of gas. The incident occurred last Sunday evening at around 7pm, and police eventually managed to gain access with a doctor, who sedated the unfortunate 42-yearold. It was not the first

time she had threatened residents, and she was taken by ambulance to Candelaria hospital’s Psychiatric Unit. Local Police have informed Social Services about the incident, because she has no relatives to take care of her. In addition, the property will remain closed, the keys being held by the Courts.

Speedy rescue Granadilla’s roads for club divers for smooth drivers

A SPEEDBOAT from Los Cristianos Diving club overturned and sank off the coast of Las Americas last Friday. But all eight people on board were rescued safely. One of them swam to shore to notify the police, while five

student divers, the boat’s captain and a dive monitor stayed afloat, thanks to their diving vests. Two helicopters and a maritime boat were involved in rescuing the stranded team, along with a lifeguard aboard a jet ski!

Missing German: The hunt’s still on THE Guardia Civil’s Mountain Rescue Unit is continuing its search for a 67-yearold missing German man, lost in Teno Alto, Buenavista del Norte. Günter Kurt Seifert disappeared on

15th March when he left his hotel in Puerto de La Cruz, wearing a grey T-shirt, navyblue shorts, hiking boots and a rucksack. He is around 5ft 9ins tall, weighs 15st 10lbs and has a scar on his arm.

THE Cabildo is investing 5½m euros to resurface several roads in Granadilla, including the one joining Chimiche with Granadilla town and the main road from San Miguel to Granadilla. The Los Llanos-San Isidro area will also be resurfaced, along with the town centre’s access road. Another area in great

need of improvement, says Granadilla Mayor José Domingo Regalado, is the road from San Isidro to El Medano town centre. Residents in the area have been demanding a resurface for ages, but the Mayor has a bigger project planned with the Cabildo: a new pedestrian lane which would also allow bicycles. The lane will be 1½-2 metres wide and illuminated, and the mayor expects this project to become a reality in the 2018-2019 period. Regalado said: “This year, we will also be

commissioning the two roundabouts projects. In fact, you can already see the measurements in El Medano for the new roundabout at the junction to Los Abrigos, where the wooden boat is. “The other roundabout will be in front of the T-gas service station, at the junction towards Hermano Pedro. The mayor also announced that the junction in Los Abrigos will be finished in the next week or so, and a public parking area is also being built in the town.

The island’s police headquarters issued a statement saying the man, said to be a friend of the family, had previously provided the minor with hash, and wanted to continue doing so in exchange for sex. The boy’s mother reported the incident after finding messages on her son’s mobile phone, and the police arrested the man in Arrecife.

Meet Miss Mayor!

A FORMER Miss World will, on 4th April, be appointed Mayor of Gibraltar, which is an unpaid role and consists, mainly, of ceremonial duties. Mrs Kaiane Lopez will hold the position for one year only, and current Mayor Adolfo Canepa will step down after a total of three years’ service, having also served twice in the Seventies. Although not the first female Mayor of Gibraltar, Mrs Lopez, then Miss Aldorino, gained international fame when she won the 2009 Miss World competition.

Ex-wife’s bar intact!

A MAN who barricaded himself inside his former wife’s bar in Guimar on Tuesday and threatened to blow it up with various gas bottles and 10ltrs of petrol, has been arrested. At 2.15pm, Local Police were informed of the incident, on Ave Venezuela. And the man, confronted by the Guardia Civil and firefighters as well, was persuaded to surrender.

Stinging response

A SWARM of bees, from a hive in an attic department, created havoc for a Local Police officer in La Laguna. The hive was found in a building in Obispo Rey Redondo Street, in the centre of town. The bees stung 10 pedestrians and the police officer over a four-hour period, before two bee-keepers were able to remove the hive.

Bird-lover’s big hike for the sake of turtle doves A BRITISH bird lover has walked the entire length of Spain in a battling bid to help save turtle doves from becoming extinct.

Jonny Rankin (pictured), of Bury St Edmonds, Suffolk, has so far raised over £4,700 (5,420 euros) by trekking 705 miles,

from Tarifa to Asturias, for an RSPB project to rebuild their British habitats. The 33-year-old experienced tough climbs and torrential rains during the 28-day trip, which took him through Sevilla, Salamanca and the Picos de Europa. His route mirrored the path taken by the doves when migrating to the UK from Africa. But, since 1970,

their population has fallen by 93% in the UK and 74% in Europe. “We fulfilled our aims of increasing awareness of turtle doves, and fund-raising for their sake,” said Jonny, who completed part of the route with friends. “I tried my absolute best for 28 days straight, reaching and surpassing perceived limits on a daily basis”

Olive-oil leaders in the doldrums THE world’s largest olive-oil company, Spanish firm Deoleo, is close to collapse after posting a 179m-euro loss last year. It is acknowledged as the world’s largest bottler of brands, including Carbonell, Hojiblanca and Kiope, but its turnover dropped by 15% to 695m following a price surge. And its sales also dropped by 22% after a “strategic” decision to make profitable sales a priority. Prices jumped last year because of poor harvests in Spain and Italy, which are the world’s top producers. A bacteria outbreak in southern Italy, which infected at least a million trees, also led to the country’s lowest harvest in 25 years. Deoleo now plans to sell its Antequera factory and will also sack several office workers, although it is not clear how many. Deloeo says it is now focused on consumers’ needs, and the quality of its products.

Woman feeds pups to huge pet python

The right Gere for Spain’s buddhists

VETERAN film star Richard Gere wants to build Spain’s largest buddhist centre, in the Greater Madrid region of commuter town Alcorcón.

A WOMAN who posted images of her pet python, feeding on what appeared to be a puppy, is being probed by Seprona, the Guardia Civil’s Nature Protection Unit.

An online advert, selling the 1½-metre-long python, was displayed by the Granada woman, accompanied by the questionable picture. It was spotted by an animal-charity member, who contacted the woman to clarify what was actually

shown. The Loja resident confirmed that she often fed her pet python puppies, kittens and some birds! Seprona officers located her, and she is now waiting to learn whether animal cruelty charges will be pressed against her, following a hearing.

The US actor, who has been a buddhist for many years, already sponsors two homeless shelters, in conjunction with his Spanish partner Alejandra Silva (pictured with him). He is also a firm supporter of Madrid Mayoress Manuela Carmena because of her social and humanitarian conscience, and has founded a buddhist centre in Pedreguer, Alicante. This time, Gere wants to build what will be

the country’s biggest buddhist centre in the now-disused Alcorcón Arts Creation Centre (CREAA). The Pretty Woman star, who has a direct line to the Dalai Lama, visited the arts centre a month ago, and is said to represent investors with whom he has been in talks for some months. Plans are at the initial phase, but Alcorcón Mayor David Pérez has been looking to transform what he calls “a completely unnecessary building” for some years. And even though he actually sanctioned 180m euros to be spent on the construction, it has never been used, despite being offered to art galleries and universities, among other entities.

Giant dies after a crane fails to move him clear

A STRICKEN man in Seville, classed as morbidly obese, has died of natural causes because of his weight, following firemen’s attempts to lift him from his home with a crane after he became ill. The 25-year-old, who weighed more than 47 stone, was too huge to fit down the halls of his apartment block. Paramedics who arrived to take him to hospital were forced to call firemen when they realised it would require heavy-lifting machinery to remove him. The unnamed man died a couple of hours after emergency services were first called. His body was removed by firemen, via his balcony in San Juan de Aznalfarache, near Seville.

The man’s relatives contacted emergency services when he began suffering chest pains. But it took the fire service more than four hours to remove the man’s body, using a crane in a “stressful” and “very difficult” situation, according to a spokesperson. Social services had been monitoring his situation because the family could not afford to take adequate care of him. And the fire service had been called out several times previously to transfer him to hospital. Town Hall chiefs agreed to pay for his funeral when they learned that his family were poverty stricken. According to World Health Organisation figures, some 22.8% of Spanish men are obese, while among Spanish women the figure is higher at 24.7%.

Real choker for a would-be mugger LOCAL Police from Santa Úrsula arrested a 54-yearold man on Monday night after his attempt to mug a woman. The 33-year-old, waiting in her car for her daughter to finish private lessons, was grabbed around the neck. The man threatened to suffocate her if she didn’t hand over her money,

but the woman began screaming and scared him off. Officers arrived promptly and saw she was suffering a panic attack. But she was still able to help the cops scour the area, on Tenerife’s North coast. They found her attacker, who was from La Oratova and has a police record.

Dogs’ DNA will catch out their careless owners

THERE are an estimated 100,000 dogs in Malaga, southern Spain, and authorities there are to introduce obligatory DNA profiling in a bid to reduce the amount of canine excrement. Owners will have to pay for genetic analysis of their pets, which will then have to carry a small tag on their collars with their name and identification number. The measure, approved on Monday, also aims to tackle the problem of owners abandoning or mistreating animals. In recent years, Spanish cities have seen a huge increase in dog numbers. The results of the DNA profile, which will cost around 35 euros, will be added to data already compiled about the animal on the municipal registry’s microchip. Dog-owners, discovered not to have complied with the DNA register, will face a fine of between 110-130 euros. “The idea isn’t to fine people for the sake of it, but so that the measure works properly, which means there has to be an element of sanction involved,” said Raúl

Jiménez, head of Malaga City Hall’s environment department. The plan is not to scour the city’s streets for dog poo. Instead, the city’s animal and bird collection service will collect any stools it finds as it goes about its business. Those they do find will then be sent for analysis at a cost of 18 euros and checked against the DNA registry. Malaga is the first large Spanish city to create a canine DNA register, based on initiatives such as that in Xátiva, in Valencia. “We know that this brings about a drastic drop in canine excrement in the street,” says Jiménez. Owners will now have six months to visit a veterinary surgeon, who will take a blood sample from their dog and send it to a laboratory, which, in turn, will create a genetic profile with some 19 indicators. Owners will then receive a card and a tag for their dog. A total of some 200,000 euros has been set aside to cover the cost of the measures, in the case of owners being unable to pay, which will be co-ordinated through the Social Services Department. Dogs kept in refuges will not be subject to the new measure until an owner has been found for them.

Guide and security dogs will also be exempt. The scheme is the result of 18 months of planning, with animal-protection associations, vets and breeders all being consulted. The new measures will forbid the use of “punishment” collars, as well as the display of animals in shop windows. Malaga City Hall, controlled by the Popular Party, with the support of Ciudadanos, has also agreed to encourage people to adopt abandoned dogs by accepting the costs involved: vaccination, sterilisation, microchip, and now, DNA profiling. The aim is to end the need to have unwanted dogs put down. In 2016, 1,473 dogs were handed over to the local authorities, 1,047 by their owners, and 426 of which were found roaming. Last year, 547 dogs were put down in Malaga city, a 14% drop on 2015. And there has been a 50% drop in the number of dogs being put down since 2011. *Other Spanish cities have adopted “scoop-thepoop” measures to tackle careless dog-owners. In the Madrid dormitory town of Brunete, inspectors were sent out to monitor offenders… then mailed the droppings back to the owners as a warning!

Damaged Plaza’s building emptied

THE building on Plaza San Lorenzo street, in Valle San Lorenzo, was evacuated on Monday night because of structural damage. It was a precautionary measure, taken by Arona Council on the recommendation of experts, after the community of owners had asked for the building to be inspected. Structural damage was evident on a pillar in the garage, and there were cracks in the building. The evacuation affected 14 apartments, but most of the residents were able to fix up alternative accommodation with families. Arona Town Hall found temporary homes for those who had nowhere to live. The borough’s Urban Planning Department carried out a detailed inspection of the Plaza building on Tuesday.

Lab chocolate might replace the real deal

IMAGINE a world without chocolate! It is entirely possible, according to the future mapped out by some climate-change observers. But there’s good news for all the sweet-toothed people in our midst because laboratory-made chocolate is already at the prototype stage. The 2.5ºC temperature rise, expected by 2050, will make cocoa cultivation impossible across most of the land currently used for this crop. That’s the outcome of a study by the International Centre for Tropical Agriculture, which focuses on Ghana and Ivory Coast. By 2030, when temperatures go up by 1ºC, production will already be significantly lower, and chocolate will start to be considered a luxury item. This doom-and-gloom scenario for many prompted biologist Lucía Atehortua, who co-ordinates the Biotechnology Group at Antioquia University, in Colombia, to start researching alternatives. She wants to ensure that mankind is not left without a product that is “healthy, and in high global demand”, and her idea is to create cocoa inside a lab. But how? The simple explanation is that a cocoa seed is taken, and some of its tissues isolated: specifically, those in constant reproduction.

They are placed in a liquid medium containing a cocktail of nutrients, which includes nitrogen, phosphorus, iron, boron, magnesium, copper, essential amino acids and vitamins. These and other substances that stimulate cell separation, combined with doses of oxygen, light and carbon dioxide, lead to huge multiplication. After about a month, the mix is transferred to a bioreactor and exposed to a new set of light-and-temperature combinations to extract the biomass, polyphenols (chemicals which may have plant benefits for people) and fatty acids, which contribute to the making of chocolate as we know it. It all seems extremely technical and scientific, but the crunch is: Does it, will it, can it … taste like real chocolate? Atehortua admits: “No, not for now.” That’s because the product does not undergo the

fermentation applied in industrial processes. But she and her colleagues are working on that! Her lab is also working on other innovative projects, such as cloning thaumatin, a protein around 2,500 times sweeter than sugar, which would make it possible to obtain sweet, calorie-free cocoa. For now, though, the main challenge is how to produce lab chocolate on an industrial scale to bring down its cost to something similar to the cost of producing the real thing. “And you also need to check the water and carbon footprints to see if it is environmentally sustainable,” adds the biologist. “These tests have not been conducted yet, so we don’t know if this will become a reality.” The consequences of climate change means it is essential to seek alternatives to traditional production, and

the concept of lab food is not just a pipe dream. Miguel Ángel Lurueña, a specialist in food technology, says there is an increasinglyrealistic option to overcome certain problems inherent to traditional production. “There is a need for enormous investments in plants, water, manpower, time and processing equipment,” he stresses. “And there is also an ethical component when it comes to meat production, for instance. “It remains to be seen to what extent this type of food is similar to conventionallyproduced food, and, above all, whether it will be accepted by consumers.” Ana Ríos, a climate-change expert at the Inter-American Development Bank (BID), says higher temperatures will bring more drought in future, compromising many essential crops for humans, such as potatoes and wheat. A sponsored project has conducted an analysis of both to discover which varieties would be better suited to the new weather conditions. And something similar is happening with coffee, given that the Coffea plant will have to be grown at higher altitudes as temperatures rise. Eventually, there will probably no longer be enough land to meet global demand. “Today, the appropriate elevation is around 1,200m,” says Rios. “In 2020 it will be 1,400m and in 2050 it will rise to 1,600m.”

Business

By Paul Montague at blevins Franks

IF you have chosen to retire in the Canary Isles, your pensions can be the key to a comfortable retirement.

But, with Brexit looming, global uncertainty and more options than ever for how you can access your funds, pensions can be a source of concern and confusion. By getting to grips with the current issues, you could find opportunities ahead, especially if you have a final salary (“defined benefit”) pension. 1. Pension providers are vulnerable Employers who provide finalsalary pensions guarantee a known percentage of your salary throughout retirement. With today’s low interest rates and increased life expectancy, however, the cost of funding these benefits has soared, making it harder for many companies to afford the promised pension payments. Like BHS, companies with significant shortfalls can fail, and so could their pension schemes. 2. Transfer values have never been higher To offload pension liabilities, many companies are offering

24th March - 30th March 2017

Six things you should know about pensions members large sums (“transfer values”) to leave. Calculated as a multiple of the future pension payment, some pay-outs have doubled from 20x two years ago to 40x today - sometimes hundreds of thousands of pounds. Properly managed, such high pay-outs can, potentially, provide a retirement income that exceeds the original annual payment, outweighing the benefits of drawing a guaranteed pension for life. 3. Ex-pats can access taxefficient alternatives Expatriates may benefit from reinvesting UK pension funds into more tax-efficient arrangements for Spain, or transferring to a Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Scheme (QROPS). Doing this can unlock taxcompliant opportunities and other benefits, such as estate planning advantages. Tax benefits of QROPS vary greatly between providers and jurisdictions. Also, the UK government has just introduced a 25% tax on overseas transfers to QROPS in certain circumstances. This charge will not affect you if both you and your QROPS are in the European Economic Area (EEA), or are both based in the same country outside the EEA. It is important to take professional, regulated

advice to establish if this approach is suitable for you. 4. A lower pension allowance could catch you out UK pension savings (excluding the State Pension), totalling over £1 million, will breach the lifetime pension allowance. Anything over this threshold triggers UK taxation of 55% when taken as cash, or 25% as income, or transferred to a QROPS, wherever you are resident. Calculating your lifetime

allowance is complex. After years of saving employer contributions and investment growth, you could go over without realising. Those close to the limit should consider their options. 5. Advice is essential Despite tempting payouts and other potential benefits, transferring from final-salary pensions is not suitable for everyone. Transfers are also a target for pension scams, so it is

essential to employ due diligence and use a regulated provider. For benefits worth over £30,000, the Financial Conduct Authority makes this compulsory. 6. The window of opportunity may close If you decide transferring is right for you, now may be the time to act because such high transfer values may not be available for long. Also, some speculate that the UK government may change the rules to make withdrawals more difficult, or start taxing pension transfers for non-residents, post-Brexit. With so much speculation and uncertainty ahead, this is a good time to review your pension arrangements. Take personalised, professional advice to ensure you are on the right track to continue enjoying your retirement lifestyle in the Canary Isles. Summarised tax information is based upon our understanding of current laws and practices, which may change. This article is general in nature, and should not be construed as providing any personalised taxation and/or investment advice. Individuals should seek personalised advice. Spain-UK freedom of Temporary work movement is on cards contracts hurting SPAIN seems happy to authorise a common agreement about EU and UK nationals living abroad. And, though not making promises, the country has said Yes to a reciprocal deal, “in principle”.

It is good news for UK Prime Minister Theresa May, who is keen to secure a commitment from EU countries to protect the rights of Brits living on the continent after Brexit. Jorge Toledo, Spain’s EU secretary said: “We are broadly in favour of retaining a reciprocal

agreement on questions like healthcare and freedom of movement. “As regards to the rights of EU citizens in the UK, and the rights of UK citizens in the EU, Spain is in favour of the amplest respect of these rights in the future. But the conditions will, and should be, a matter of negotiation.” Diplomatic sources have also hinted that Madrid may support a deal that would keep the relationship between Northern Ireland and the Republic, where free movement of labour and goods is guaranteed under EU rules. Mrs May’s Tory government has refused to guarantee the rights of EU nationals in Britain,

until those of Brits in EU member states are also guaranteed. The House of Commons scrapped a bid by the House of Lords to write a commitment to EU nationals into law last week, by rejecting the peers’ proposed amendment to the Article 50 Bill. The issue will almost certainly be at the top of the agenda once Brexit talks begin. And, once she has triggered Article 50 on Tuesday (29th March), Mrs May will be looking to secure an early deal on the subject. Some 300,000 Brits are officially registered as living in Spain, although the actual figure is thought to be closer to one million.

Spain’s economy

THE European Commission has issued a warning about the use of temporary contracts in Spain, and how they are having a negative impact on the country’s economy. In its annual report on macro-economic imbalances, the EC said that despite Spain’s “strong” recovery, it has not overcome the crisis’ legacy and is still facing a series of challenges. It revealed that Spain had one of the highest rates of temporary contracts in the EU, adding that many of them were for extremely short periods. The EC added that these contracts often failed to act as a springboard into stable careers, and were associated with poor working conditions, leading employees to be at a greater risk of poverty. The report recognised how the latest labour reforms had led to a small increase in fixed contracts. But it complained that they were not strong enough to discourage widespread use of temporary contracts. It added that the risk of poverty was still far too high in Spain, despite a small decline in 2015.

The Voice UK

Sat 25th March, ITV1, 20.30

It’s the live Semi-final of The Voice UK as the 8 remaining singers perform for a place in next week’s Live Final. Members of Team Gavin, Team JHud, Team Will and Team Tom will sing to stay in the competition and be one step closer to winning a recording contract with Polydor Records. Only 4 acts can go through to the Final and once again the power lies with the viewers at home as the public vote to save their favourite singers.

Vera

Sunday 26th March, ITV1, 20.00

The body of a young man is discovered face down in a river by Thrunton Woods, bludgeoned to death. But with no ID on the body, tracing the victim’s identity proves difficult for DCI Vera Stanhope (Brenda Blethyn) and her team. Vera is forced to make headway with the only clues they have: a mourning ring worn around the young man’s neck, needle marks on the body, and a drugs wrap with a distinctive stamp - ‘Dark Angel’. Tracing the stamp draws Vera to Gateshead and into Newcastle’s criminal underbelly, where it transpires the victim, Nathan, had several ties with people both dangerous and vulnerable; people with good reason to want Nathan out of the picture. But the investigation takes an unexpected turn when a witness sighting leads Vera and DS Aiden Healy (Kenny Doughty) to the scene of an old crime: a remote farm in which a brutal murder took place some 13 years ago. DC Kenny Lockhart (Jon Morrison) remembers the case well - he helped put the perpetrator, Eddie Thurston (Robert Pugh), behind bars.

On a lighter note

By Carl

from Robot

AFTER the winter months start creeping away, the world of hairdressing prepares for that time of year when the most popular colours are of a lighter variety. Out come the highlights, and even those of a darker tone love to be brightened up. There’s one thing we aren’t doing this year, and that is “overloading” the hair with an overlybleached look. This year, it’s more about subtle and sunkissed, rather than peroxide overkill. Big colours are golden hues and honeys, and sandy shades that look natural, but still stand out. Keeping the root areas not too light to avoid heavy re-growth, and shading the colour down to lighter ends, is

what we will be seeing a lot of this year. Even on shorter hair, colours will be warming up as opposed to the silver/ greys that have been around for a while. If you’re naturally a darker brown or chocolate, then stick to very-warm, subtle shades, and don’t go all out or the look will be too artificial. If you’re dark blonde /mousey, then go for light beige or natural light blondes. This season,

stay away from cool colours and anything too whitey. These colours are low maintainance and require moderate upkeep; your stylist will guide you through your colour choices. We at Robot Hair believe a cut isn’t quite finished without enhancing it with a perfect colour, and our stylists are always available to give you your free colour consultation, with no obligation.

Golden girls

By Carl Pattison

No one should tell you when to stop being interested in fashion, not even when it comes to reaching a certain age. Fashion is for everyone, and that includes you ladies who think that once you’ve passed a certain number, you can’t be seen in anything but beige. The times I’ve seen mature women give up on their wardrobes, thinking that no one’s interested in how they look, is unbelievable. There’s no law to say that dressing well is a “young” thing. Being in touch with what’s going on in the fashion world should always stay with you. It can be hard to find clothes that fit as we age; our bodies change, and what we want to wear might

not be what actually suits us, or does anything for us. Choose layering as opposed to clingy, and emphasise the areas you’re still comfortable with. Add colour to your wardrobe, and stay away from drab shades such as beige and khaki, and too much white. These colours draw the natural colouration from your skin; you should be adding colour, not taking it away. Accessorise to create

a more-youthful look, don’t be afraid to experiment and never dress to your age group. Your look should be modern, yet classy, with not too much skin on show. Remember - you don’t want to look as though you’re trying to turn back time. Fashion isn’t something that should wear off as we grow older; it should evolve as we do, and still make a personality statement, no matter how old we are.

How to make sure you a covered when buying a second-hand car By Emma

from Motorworld

WE have recently had customers affected by issues that can arise after the purchase of a second-hand car, where they didn’t have any paperwork, or when the cars have even been impounded by the police. We are going to highlight the points that buyers should be very aware of when buying a second-hand car or bike, regardless of whether they are from an individual or a business. The first thing to remember is that if a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. We all know about buying a car with an embargo on it, or with outstanding finance. But how does it work if you buy a car from a third party who isn’t the legal owner of

the vehicle, and the actual owner doesn’t get paid? This is what we are going to clarify. The name of the registered keeper is shown on the Permiso de Circulación, and on Tráfico's data base. This is the only legallyregistered owner, unless you can prove that you have paid the registered keeper for the car, and that the paperwork is pending being transferred. Problems often arise when you buy a car through a third party, whether it be a dealer or an individual; if you pay the third party, you are not the legal owner. This is when the police can impound the car if the registered keeper notifies them that the car has been “stolen”, or has been sold without them receiving payment or without their permission. In this case, the purchaser would be left without the car and the monies paid, and you would need to reclaim the payment from the third party who you paid. In many cases, they either didn't have the authority to sell and /or do not have the money to reimburse you.

Let’s look at a few scenarios: You check the paperwork, and the registered keeper isn’t the person you are buying the car from. You are, in fact, buying the car from a third party. Ask questions such as: is the third party authorised to sell said vehicle? If they are a dealer, and selling the car on behalf of the owner, they would be required by law to possess a written and signed document stating this. Or they should be able to put you in contact directly with the owner for you to deal with them. If they are an individual, then the same rules apply; they would need to be able to prove that they have

permission to sell the car. The scenarios to consider are perhaps husband/wife estranged, or a son/daughter where the parent is old/ incapacitated, or perhaps has died. You’ve checked that the seller has written permission In this case, you are able to go ahead and purchase the car without an issue, as long as any paperwork you are given is signed by the owner and not the third party selling the car, and providing you have checked the car for debts. The seller cannot provide proof that they have the authorisation to sell the car, but you purchase the car anyway

In this case, if the registered keeper reclaims the car due to non-payment, then you, as the buyer, could be left without both the car and the monies paid. You would have to denounce the third party whom you paid, in an attempt to reclaim the monies. This, as we all know, takes a long time, and, in the meantime, you are car-less and out of pocket. How do you make sure you are safe? Always ask as many questions as needed until you feel 100% secure that the car is available for sale by an authorised person or the owner. You would need to make sure that the name on the invoice, if buying from a dealer, or the name on the contract of purchase-sale, if buying from an individual, matches the name on the Permiso de Circulación. Never purchase a vehicle if the seller cannot prove they are the legal owner, or authorised. It is impossible to cover all scenarios, but we have highlighted some of the most-common in order to try to help safeguard the buyer. As always, it's buyer beware.

Food review: Smokey’s Beer Garden, Puerto Colon

A burger to remember! WHEN first arriving at Smokey’s Beer Garden, two things struck me; its elevated position with amazing views over the beach and sea, and the gentle, smokey aroma coming from the kitchen.

It was as though I had just arrived at a friend’s house for a BBQ, knowing that all those old favourite flavours were about to be released on to my palate. The live music was a bonus, and added to the relaxed party mode. Steve the waiter showed Jo, my partner for the evening, and me to our table in the heated beer garden. It is still a bit chilly in the evenings at the moment, and the gas heaters were most welcome. He immediately sorted out a bottle of a very-pleasant house-red, and left us to ponder the menu. After being stuck for a while on what to order, as it all seemed great, Steve came to our rescue. He suggested that the chef put together a small selection of starters for us to sample. What seemed like only few minutes later, a small banquet arrived and we started to understand that portion sizes here are not an issue. Rather than just listing everything (I’ll leave you to come and find out for yourselves), all I can say is that two of the stars for

me were the Pulled Pork, which was great with a creamy-garlic dip, and the signature dish of Marinated Rack of Ribs, which Jo had difficulty picking up as the meat literally kept falling off the bone, back on to her plate! Jereon, the owner, joined us and explained that the idea for the restaurant, which opened some 18 months ago, simply came from his love of barbecuing; he makes the rib sauce himself with 12 secret ingredients, and now sells it to places as far away as Denmark. Other fortes on the menu

include the handmade, Angus-beef, gourmet burgers, and this headline dish boasts a weight of some 700g for those with healthy appetites! After having worked our way through all the starters (we thought that was the main course as well!), we were presented with “normal” burgers, each standing about eight inches off the plate, layered with all the toppings, and accompanied by homemade chips. They were impressive and tasty, and you could tell that the burgers were top quality. While we let the food go

down, and watched some customers jiving, we discovered a more-modest, daytime menu which is available until 5.30pm, as well as a children’s menu. Entertainment starts at 3.00pm every day. Daily specials are available, including home-smoked

fish, and next week sees the introduction of smoked chips. The restaurant is open from 11am, seven days a week, and is located on the top floor of the Terranova building in Puerto Colon. If you love BBQs, then give it a try!

Dingo’s sanctuary plea FOR 22 years, Philip Nelson has offered physical sanctuary and refuge for hundreds of abandoned dogs and cats at Dingo’s Dog and Cat Sanctuary in Guía de Isora, without any government funding. He relies solely on street collections and donations from the public. With the help of hundreds of volunteers who found out about the sanctuary through cultural-exchange site workaway.info, he has dedicated all his life to the animals. On Monday, 22nd March, the courts gave Phil five days’ notice to remove all animals and structures from the land where he has been living, and he has no other place to go.

If Phil doesn’t find another place to stay, all the animals will be killed by the government. He said: “In this dramatic situation, we are imploring that the municipality and all relevant authorities take their responsibilities seriously, and provide the sanctuary with land to rent. “If we do not react as a community and express our humanity, then we will all be accomplices to the massacre of the 88 dogs and numerous cats who the volunteers and I look after. St Patrick’s Day

What a craic!

LAST Friday saw Oasis Fm’s annual broadcast in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day. Who’d have thought that 2016 could have been topped, but it looks like it was! It all started at midday from O’Neills in Veronicas, followed by Murphys and Leonardo’s, with the day being finished off at the newly-opened Paddy O’Kellys bar in Las Americas. All the Oasis Fm DJs joined the party at some point during the day, and had a great time celebrating with everyone.

Worshippers tuck in

AS St Patrick’s Day began bursting into a blaze of green, white and gold, with plenty of black stuff, a midday Mass was held at Our Lady of Carmen church, in Los Cristianos. Father Jose Estevez Herrera took the

service in English to a large congregation of ex-pats and holidaymakers, many deckedout suitably for the day ahead. And after the service, they adjourned to the crypt for coffee and snacks. The local community rallied round with biscuits donated by Subway, cake from Croquant and financial support from Los Cristianos Properties.

Then, with clean souls and full bellies, they set out to celebrate in style. There was plenty to celebrate the day after as well because Ireland’s depleted rugby team, against all the odds, inflicted mighty England’s first defeat after their record-equalling, 18-match run of wins. But England still won the Triple Crown, with Ireland runners-up.

Puppy Prickles - a survivor IT was an emotional time recently, when this lovely little girl was brought to K9.

She was spotted early in the day in the barranco close to the refuge, and, judging by her poor condition, it was clear she had been there for some time. She was so frightened and trusted no one, always retreating to the safety of her cactusbush “home” when approached. But K9’s Anja Hillenbrand, and her other half, Bryan Gore, were not giving up. They stayed close to the young girl all day long, talking with her and coaxing her to take some muchneeded food and water. Finally, after many hours, and with encouragement from K9 worker Kelly Greenwood and her trusty dog, Chico, Anya had

A successful visit!

LAST week, we made a very special trip to La Residencia De Mayores, a care centre in Los Cristianos. Along with a few of our puppies and extremely-well-behaved dogs, we visited the elderly residents. They were all very happy to see the dogs, and it brought much joy to them. As well as being very therapeutic, the interaction had a good, calming effect. We were delighted that this first visit was such a huge success, and we plan to make it an regular event. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always

James Hammers a final nail! HISTORY was created in the Direct Telecom Pool League on Tuesday night when James Hammers C defeated Palms Rebels to become the first second-tier side to lift the PJ Electrical Services Cup. They were good value for it as well, at a packed Terrace Bar, on Amarilla Golf. True, Palms looked the part. Shai had splashed out on some brand-new Hugo Boss shirts for the team to mark their first-ever cup final. And though they may have looked a million dollars, they were soon shaking their heads as James Hammers backed up their Division Two title win with this historic double. The action unfolded like this… 0-1: James makes fast start and has Graeme on back foot. Graeme reasserts and a James foul gives Palms two shots. Poor visit from Graeme gifts James a black to the middle. 1-1: Wayne has a big break and sinks seven balls. Snookered off black. Tony Macarone puts him in snooker again. Wayne is unlucky not to get out, but Tony makes small error. Leaves Wayne a gap. Fatal mistake. Match level. 1-2: Cagey frame. Shammy goes for a couple of “Booms”, which come in. However, Ken H “old man’s” him and a fine long red sets him up for a regulation black. A cool finish and the Hammers are back in front. 1-3: Big upset. Harry dominates, but “The Glove” sucks him in. A sweet threeball finish sees the Division 2 champs up after the first set. Some long faces in the Palms camp. 2-3: Wayne seven-balls Tony in seconds. He will be key player tonight. 2-4: This could be decisive. Graeme looks in control, and a lovely shot on the last colour earns him a straight black. He gives it the beans. Misses! James has four balls and the black. And pots them all coolly. Palms in big trouble.

2-5: Close frame this. Harry makes good start, only for Tony Macaroni to bounce back. Harry is a little unlucky as he goes for a double into the middle. Went for kiss off red ball but it doesn’t sink. Tony calmed knocks in last two reds and the black in the middle. All the pressure on Palms. Can they stage fightback? 2-6: Scenes! Referee Shai gets the call-up and is always chasing. Ken H with a lovely finish and it’s a disaster for Palms Elite. Lazarus needed for the Torviscas team 3-6: Well, that was quick. Wayne does what he needs to against Ken H in slick fashion. Pizzas are out. Will it turn the tide? 3-7: James Hammers C win the cup and the double … amazing! Graeme is all over

the frame but jaws the black. James ties him up and then goes through the last balls. A long black wins the Cup! On table two, Phoenix Potters came from behind to claim the PJ Electrical Services Plate. Treehouse A took the early frames and were strong favourites to land the spoils. But the Potters fought back in style. It went like this… 1-0: Scott gets better of Geoff in nervy opener. 2-0: Jamie makes bad error to gift Mark the frame. 2-1: Paul looks good early, but Pod hangs in. Pod blows easy-looking double, but Paul doesn’t kill it off. Pod takes second chance. Massive frame. 2-2: Come back is on. Jay cannot get into the frame. Elvis Dave has him all shook

up with a sweet clearance to level it up. 2-3: Well, well, well. Mark looks a little out of sorts. Elvis Dave plays it smart, tying up a few pockets, but misses a black to the middle. Mark then plays a poor shot that sticks the cue ball in the pocket. Easy finish and big turn around. 2-4: Geoff is in top form. He has a tricky cross-double to seven-ball Scott but hits the knuckle! Scott pots a couple and snookers Geoff. But it’s only a short stay. Geoff finishes it off and, as Kammy would say: “Unbelievable!” 3-4: Eric up for Potters, but doesn’t get a sniff. Jay with the finish of the night to pull back a vital frame. 3-5: You can feel the tension, and this could come down to composure. Pod sinks Paul

with a long black to leave Potters two away. 3-6: Jay was superb last time on the baize, but he’ll have nightmares over this. Jamie gives him a glimmer with a possible double or cut on last yellow. But it all goes wrong leaving a simple black. 4-6: Take a bow Scott. Geoff does little wrong as Captain Scott pulls out a couple of “worldies” to keep Treehouse in it. 5-6: Mark goes through gears. A couple of ridiculous pots and he is on the black but snookered. Plays the double. The black hits the knuckle. The white goes in!’ Two shots Elvis. Not easy finish this.. Long yellow... Jaws it! Mark rolls black down cushion. It’s in! 5-7: Paul inspired as he sinks some rude balls. Great last two shots puts him on black but no pot. Pod rolls in yellow but so much work to do. Pots another and another. Regulation pot leaves Pod an awful last yellow. He needs a miracle. Plays it safe-ish. You can hear a pin drop. Paul kisses the yellow. Pod has a chance here. Yellow sunk. And the black. Potters win the Plate! This Tuesday is Presentation Night at Palms Sports Bar, in Torviscas. This includes the final of the singles tournament, and we are down to the last 16. The draw is at 7pm and everyone is invited to enjoy the evening. Meanwhile, on 4th April, Tenerife will see the start of a new pool league as we launch our Summer League. It will run for 10 weeks ending on the 30th May and will be known as the Arona Foods Summer Pool League. This year will see 10 teams competing, but we have high hopes that next year will see 20 teams involved. It’s a different format, with eight single games followed by a four-man team game. The winning team, plus the holder of the highest team break, will both receive cash prizes along with trophies. League stalwart Barry Harper, co-owner of Arona Foods, has come up with the idea and hopes that the different format will be a little more light-hearted and fun for all the teams.

Super Macs are champs! SCRUFFY Macs won the Oasis FM darts league Division 1 title after a hard-fought draw at The Pub, which secured the points to take the coveted crown in their final fixture. Congratulations to them, and to their player of the season, Tom, who went the whole campaign without losing a singles match, and rounded off a stellar effort with his 10th maximum. Pas O Nadas A, who pushed them to the wire, finished runnersup with a whitewash victory at Exiles, which

included Richard’s 27th and 28th 180! With catch-up matches to be played, third spot is still up for grabs, and it will probably be decided when Phoenix entertain Gaffers on Monday. Elsewhere, Sandys notched their third win only, taking the trebles leg to beat the Playboys. And more title-winning cheers could be heard at the summit of Division 2 as The Tavern claimed the title in their maiden season with one match to spare. Despite losing 5-3

French relish for Hamburger EUROPEAN Basketball League glory moved one step nearer for Iberostar Tenerife on Tuesday night as they drew 62-62 with Asvel Lyon in France. Wednesday’s second leg in La Laguna should see them move into the Final Four competition at the end of April. But another 62-point haul was not quite enough to prevent a rare Spanish League home defeat a few days earlier because secondplaced Valencia scored 65. But Tenerife still sit proudly on top, with a one-point lead. The Valencia defeat was down to a poor second quarter, which they lost 18-6. It left a little too much to do as the visitors stayed strong to the end. Rodrigo San Miguel headed the scoring with 13 points,

supported ably by Davin White and Georgios Bogris, with eight apiece. It was a tough, physical encounter in France, with Lyon starting stronger. Tenerife hung in, though, and, in the final quarter, were eight points clear at one stage. But Dragovic led the home fightback, and a three-point score in the final seconds tied the game. Marius Grigonis was in sparkling form, scoring 16

points to keep the European dream alive. But coach Txus Vidorreta knows there is still a big job to be done, especially if Lyon have injured star Uter back for the second leg. The Valencia game was the third consecutive home sell-out, with just over 5,000 people packed in to the Pabellon Santiago Martin. And next week´s European return should push that figure close. With fans filling “The Hamburger” on a regular basis, the club have asked about expanding the capacity because there is minimal seating only at one end. The Cabildo, which owns the building, has made encouraging noises about making more room available for the team’s rising popularity.

CD Tenerife

Bump in the road By Colin Kirby CALL it complacency, call it slackness, but don´t call time on Tenerife´s promotion dream. This home defeat by Reus was unexpected, but there were few complaints with the result. Reus are the meanest team, defensively, in the division, and Tenerife drew 0-0 at their place in October. And this time they were sucked into their crude, but effective, game-plan. The goal, which ended the 440-day, 26-game unbeaten home record exploited some defensive slackness. Benito hit a ball through from deep down the field. German and Jorge were stretched, and Mayor sped through to slip the ball under Dani Hernandez. That was 13 minutes into the match, and most of the 12,124 crowd were confident Tenerife could turn it around. But too many players had an offday for the home side,

and Reus clamped down tighter as the game went on. Raul Camara set up one of the best openings, his run down the right ending with a good cross that Choco Lozano connected with. But the ball trickled along the goalmouth and out, via a post. It was going to be that sort of afternoon. Miguel Garcia gave Reus hope for a second goal when he broke loose down the

flank as Camille chased shadows. The ball into the box needed two punches for keeper Hernandez to clear the danger. The other keeper, Edgar Badia, would have a big say in the outcome. Late in the first half, he made successive, impressive saves - a full-length dive and then a drop-andsmother at the post as Amath moved in. Badia, who had a nice little sideline in time-wasting,

Tacuense derby warning

FORM will go out of the window when our two Premier League teams clash in Santa Cruz on Sunday at the Heliodoro Stadium, the 23,000-seater home of CD Tenerife. There’s a big push underway to set the biggest possible record crowd for a ladies’ Spanish League game, and a few nerves will be jangling before kick-off. Looking at the season so far, bottom-placed Tacuense could easily have been dismissed as cannon-fodder by sixth-placed Egatesa

FOOTBALL is all about timing, and CD Marino are still well-placed (5th) for a promotion play-off challenge, thanks to this excellent home win last Sunday. Amed was the driving force behind the demolition, opening the scoring after 27

showed his intentions just before the break when he curled into a protective ball like a hedgehog at a barbecue. The keeper’s command performance continued when the teams came back out, this time dozing at the feet of Amath. It was time to shake things up, and Tenerife brought on Cristo and Omar for Suso and Aaron. Cristo could have scored with his first touch. The ball came to him at the far post and he tried to head it past Badia. But a pass across the goal might have been a better option. A long ball up to Omar provided another possible lifeline, but his control let him down. Meanwhile, a buzz of expectancy had been building as January’s Japanese signing, Gaku Shibasaki, warmed up on the touchline. The

frustration at the longdelayed debut melted away as he came on, to a huge ovation from the fans. In a third-rate football film, he would have ripped through the opposition and won the game on his own. But this was a day for harsh reality. He fitted in well just in front of the defence, delivered some crisp passes and will be a welcome boost to the squad. But this game, beyond Tenerife, ended with Badia’s team-mates mobbing their stubborn keeper. Hopefully, Tenerife can put it down to a bad day at the office, and use the defeat to sharpen them up for two juicy games. They are still in fourth spot, and on Sunday they are away at third-placed Cadiz. The following week, they entertain fifth-placed Oviedo, so they really can shape their own destiny over these two matches.

minutes, with Coly doubling the lead a few minutes later. And Amed netted again on the stroke of half-time to give his team a comfortable break. Saul and Fran stretched the lead in the second half, and the only answer from Union Viera was a late consolation from the penalty spot by Barrios. This Sunday, there´s a local derby at Las Zocas, near San Miguel, with a 5pm kick-off.

Granadilla Tenerife. But their second win of the season, 3-1 at home against Levante, showed they will be tough to beat. Celia set the ball rolling with a ninth-minute goal, and when Reichel set up a headed second from Nisa on the half-hour, the smiles were spreading. Levante included former Granadilla forward Maria Jose Perez, who, like her cousin Ayoze at Newcastle, showed that family goal touch to peg it back to 2-1. But Celia sealed the victory with a goal from a Nisa pass after 64 minutes, and the home side even survived

losing keeper Pili with a nasty head injury. Granadilla brought back a good 1-1 result from Sporting Huelva after going behind to a 14th-minute strike by Gabi. American Jackie Simpson squared the game within five minutes and that´s how the score stood at the end. The local derby clash kicks off at 5pm tomorrow (Saturday). Entry is between one and five euros, depending on seating areas. Playing on such a big stage should inspire all the players, and further enhance the reputation of female football in Tenerife.
