THE Supreme Court, in a resolution dated Tuesday (4th April 2017), has dismissed an appeal by banks affected by its ruling of the Floor Clause. It states that it will not review the abusive clause, recognising the total retroactivity of the nullity of the Floor Clauses.

Wage war on Spain? That’s a laugh, says Theresa May THERESA May has laughed off the idea of going to war with Spain to protect the interests of Gibraltar, following a statement from Lord Michael Howard.

The former Conservative Party leader said the British Prime Minister would be prepared to show the “same resolve” as Margaret Thatcher did over the Falklands.

Mrs May, who said her policy towards Spain would be “jaw-jaw” and not “warwar”, responded, saying: “What we are doing with all European countries in the European Union is sitting down and talking to them.

“We are going to talk to them about the best possible deal

for the United Kingdom and for those countries, Spain included. It’s definitely jawjaw.”

Spain’s Foreign Minister, Alfonso Dastis, even called for calm in the wake of Lord Howard’s “going to war” suggestion.

“There is no reason to lose one’s cool over Gibraltar,” said Dastis, who also refuted the idea of Howard suggesting that Britain would actually go for war to defend the The Rock.

“He didn’t exactly say that,” said Spain’s new

Foreign Minister, who has pushed a more moderate line on Gibraltar than his predecessor, José Manuel García-Margallo.

Lord Howard, in an interview with UK broadcaster Sky News last Sunday, referred to the 1982 war between the UK and Argentina over the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands.

“Thirty-five years ago this week, another woman prime minister sent a task-force halfway across the world to defend the freedom of another small group of British people against another Spanish-speaking country,” he said.

“I’m absolutely certain our current Prime Minister will show the same resolve in standing by the people of Gibraltar. No agreement between the EU and the UK may apply to the territory

of Gibraltar without agreement between the Kingdom of Spain and the United Kingdom.”

But Dastis said: “Bringing up past events like the Falklands is out of context.

The Spanish Government, if anything, is a bit surprised by the tone generated in the UK, a country traditionally characterised by its phlegm.

It’s clear that on this issue, the traditional British phlegm is recognisable by its absence.”

The controversy sparked

by Howard’s comments, and those of UK Defence Secretary Michael Fallon, who had earlier said The Rock would be “protected all the way”, led to Mrs May calling up the Gibraltar Chief Minister to reassure him the UK would never cede the disputed territory against the wishes of Gibraltarians.

Blaze suspect faces trial for his partner’s murder

Rajoy’s PP party is under the cosh CLAIMS that the conservative Partido Popular funded election campaigns illegally are to be probed by the Spanish parliament.

The investigation follows a move by MPs in the lower house, who have voted to create a commission to look into the allegations.

The commission will look into the possible “existence of different networks of irregular donations, the awarding of public contracts and other mechanisms of irregular funding”.

It comes after Luis Barcenas, a former PP treasurer and one of

the many former PP lawmakers on trial for corruption, said publicly that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy’s party had a slush fund.

Investigators will also ascertain how much the party benefited from MPs in the PP, who offered public contracts for bribes.

The EU has heavily criticised corruption in Spain in recent times, labelling Andalucia the most corrupt region in Spain.

A series of corruption scandals has caused popularity for the PP to wane, Rajoy being forced to rule with a minority government after his party failed to win an overwhelming majority of votes at the last election.

LOCAL Police have arrested a suspect for murdering his long-term partner, whose body was found in an abandoned house on fire in La Laguna on Monday.

The man, called Iván, was the partner of 44-year-old Vicky, and reports show that she died from a blow to the head.

Next to her body were two bottles of gas, which did not explode, even though the house had been set on fire, and her body doused in petrol.

Once police had identified the victim, the search began for her partner, who was arrested in Granadilla.

He had apparently drawn attention to himself

there by self-harming and visiting a hospital for treatment.

As soon as his injuries are on the mend, his trial will begin.

Continued from Front According to the judgement of the European Court of Justice, dated December 2016, those affected by the floor clauses can receive all the money collected unduly,

not only from May 2013 onwards, but from when the loan began.

This was the result of a lawsuit filed by claimants.

They had previously obtained a final and favourable decision from the Spanish Supreme Court before December 2016, which insisted the banks refund the amounts collected illegally from May 2013 onwards.

But the claimants requested

a review of the judgement so that its effects could be retroactive, until the date the loan began.

But it is not possible for the Supreme Court to obtain a review of a final judgement on the grounds that a subsequent judgement, which establishes jurisprudence, is incompatible with the arguments of the previous one.

This later judgement is

not a “document” for the purposes of the provisions of the Civil Proceedings Law for reviewing a judgement.

There will surely be legal opinions for and against the “res judicata” argument, which are totally valid.

Maybe these amounts can be reclaimed through unjust enrichment.

The action of unjust or enrichment or “lack of cause enrichment” is intended to restore the balance altered

by displacement without justification.

For its exercise, the following requirements or budgets must be fulfilled: 1.

Enrichment of the defendant; 2.

Impoverishment of the actor; 3. Causal relationship or perfect connection between enrichment and impoverishment; 4. Lack of cause. That is, that enrichment has no reason and is unfair.

Easter Week celebrations are not new to Adeje. In fact, there are records

stretching back to the 13th century, detailing events around this important religious festival.

“We have worked to restore much of our visual culture, as well as adding new sculptures and statues

to the town’s collection,” added the Mayor. “These enrich our artistic and historical heritage.”

Among the acts attracting huge levels of public interest is “La Pasión”, the popular, theatrical representation of the last days and crucifixion of Jesus Christ, which takes place on Good Friday (14th April), from midday.

This will also be broadcast live on Television Canarias locally and 13TV nationally.

Other events include, for the second year running, the “Lenten Cooking” programme, which sees many restaurants in the borough offering special Easter menus.

There is also a number of exhibitions.

Irish photographer Phil Crean’s photographs of last year’s Good Friday event are featured in “Detalles de la Pasión” in Adeje Cultural Centre, from 7th April to the 16th. And in the San Francisco Convent, works of Juan Davó in “Vía Crucis y La Piedad Doméstica” will be be displayed.

‘I thought I would not survive horror motorbike smash’ BRITISH Olympic sprinter James Ellington, involved in a motorbike crash in Tenerife in January, has recalled the moment he thought he would die.

Ellington broke a number of bones when he collided head-on with a car on the wrong side of the road.

He was riding pillion, on his way back from a sightseeing tour with team-mate Nigel Levine, who suffered a broken leg.

There were fears that 31-year-old Ellington, who shattered his pelvis, fractured an eye socket and broke both legs, would never run again. Yet he is now back in training, and planning his sporting future.

Ellington, part of the GB team who finished fifth in the 4x100m relay at last year’s Rio Olympics, lay in the road for 40 minutes until an ambulance arrived.

He told the Guardian newspaper: “I looked at my

Now, though, he is back in the gymnasium, and planning a return to the track at the start of next year.

along with other British team-mates, were taking advantage of Tenerife’s mild winter climate to put in some warm-weather training sessions at the Las Americas athletics and football stadium.

But there appears to be no fresh news about his teammate, though. Levine has steered clear of commenting about his injuries, or, indeed, his current fitness and future sporting ambitions.

Police hunting for cheeky bank thief

A CACHE of weapons and explosives, dating back to the Spanish Civil War (193639) have been uncovered in the ceiling of the Convent of Santa Teresa de Vic, near Osona in Catalonia.

Workmen carrying out renovations discovered a secret room in a wing of the convent, which had to be evacuated before specialists moved in.

They removed 30kg of dynamite, 26 hand-grenades, 290 detonators, two rifles, 16.5kg of powder, more than 2,200 rifle cartridges and 12 metres of fuse.

The convent, occupied by anarchists of the CNTFDI in 1936, had by 1939 become a store for military equipment for General Franco’s Nationalist Army.

It was then a barracks for the Guardia Civil before being returned to the Carmelite Order.

The explosives were safely removed and taken to Osona, where they were destroyed in a controlled detonation.

Pensioner dies after motorway collision

A MAN who staged an armed bank robbery in Bañaderos, Gran Canaria, and escaped with 1,050 euros, is being hunted by the Guardia Civil and police units.

The incident occurred at 11.30am on Tuesday,

when Bankia’s alarm notified authorities that a robbery was taking place.

The thief didn’t hide from the security camera and was carrying a firearm, with which he used to intimidate people in the bank before fleeing on foot.

Police did not know whether the weapon was real or a fake.

Hotel thief out of juice A MOROCCAN man, who claimed he lived in the basement of El Médano Hotel, was caught stealing from the kitchen by a receptionist.

The suspect, alleged to have stolen several bottles of juice, later told police he gained entry to the hotel through a side window.

But he could not provide ID, and police believe he is living here illegally.

AN 81-year-old man from Luxembourg died on Monday in Tenerife, after being hit by a car as he and his wife were crossing the TF-5 near Barranco de Ruiz, in San Juan de la Rambla.

His wife saw the Opel Corsa and stepped backwards, out of the way. Tragically, her husband stepped forward by mistake and the driver could not avoid the impact.

The victim was rushed to hospital but, sadly, passed away at 6.30pm because of the severe injuries he had sustained.

TENERIFE Walking Festival, one of the largest events of its kind in Europe, takes place from 23th to 27th May, starting at Puerto de la Cruz.

It is an open event for hikers from all over the continent, combining various types of hikes, trails and original, supplementary activities.

The different walks are open to nature lovers from all over the world. The Festival itself combines daily hikes along some of the natural places of the Island, with

A MAN was severely injured on Sunday afternoon after what appeared to be a apparent suicide bid in North Tenerife.

He jumped from the bridge in La Victoria de Acentejo, near Oratava, and fell into bramble bushes that saved his life.

He was rescued by firefighters from the bottom of the barranco as a crowed of bystanders gathered to watch the event. The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition for further medical care.

A MAN who lived on the top floor of an apartment in Ofra, Santa Cruz, died on Wednesday during a fire.

The incident occurred just after 9am in the Nuevo Obrero neighbourhood following the 60-year-old victim’s return from a nearby bar.

The cause of the fire is not yet known, but it started on the sofa in the man’s living room, and it is presumed that he died from smoke inhalation.

Firefighters found the body and notified the police.

Airbnb scam tricking many holiday-makers SPANISH police are warning people of a holiday-rental scam, which uses popular website Airbnb to reel them in.

The scam alert comes via a couple, who say they were tricked into believing they were renting an apartment through the credible site, when, actually, they were being swindled out 2,000 euros and more.

This is a highly-intelligent operation, with some tricksters hijacking the identities of existing Airbnb hosts in a bid to deceive guests.

Investigators are calling for prudence from users booking online, particularly in the coming week, leading up to Easter (Semana Santa).

As well as using Airbnb, the con-artists are flooding popular rental websites with beautiful photos of

AER Lingus has defended another increase in the cost of checking-in bags when travelling to and from several European destinations.

It will now cost customers an extra 10 euros per bag on flights to and from Spain, Italy and Greece.

And it comes just four months after the Irish airline imposed exactly the same price hike.

That means it will cost 35 euros per bag each way. And a family of four travelling to and from Spain with Aer Lingus will have to spend an extra 280 euros just for their suitcases, compared with 120 euros last year.

An Aer Lingus spokeswoman said the cost of checked baggage was now determined by the distance travelled, under three categories: Near, Mid and Far.

“New baggage fees have been introduced for bookings made from 28th March,” she said. “While guests travelling to mid and far destinations incur higher baggage fees, guests travelling to near destinations, are, in fact, paying 40% less compared with baggage fees at the same time last year.”

Over 30 destinations qualify as “near”, including all UK destinations, Paris, Brussels and Amsterdam.

“Guests travelling on these routes total nearly six million annually, and they make up over 58% of our short-haul guests total,” added the spokeswoman.

“These ‘near’ guests will pay just 15 euros for a 15kg bag. Guests travelling on ‘mid’ routes to the likes of Alicante, Lisbon, Rome etc. will be charged a higher fee, or 35 euros for a 15kg bag. Equally, those travelling further afield to ‘far’ destinations such as Corfu, Pula and Lanzarote, will pay 50 euros for 15kg.”

Their advice? Talk directly to the advertiser, rather than relying on email or WhatsApp. Credible owners will never ask you for copies of passports or driving licences.

And Airbnb will never ask you to make payments outside of the website, through the likes of Western Union or Moneygram.

Fibre-optic internet is on way for Arona THE fibre-optic telecommunication system installation, embracing the internet service, has been the subject of much debate, and frustration, in Arona for years.

In fact, from the beginning of the current Mayor’s term of office, few towns in the municipality, which is a major tourist hotspot, have had fibre optics installed.

Its development, says Mayor José Julián Mena “has been a major priority for the local government”.

He understands how important it is to improve the communication system, “both to help companies within the municipality be more competitive and to improve residents’ communications”.

Arona Town Hall has developed its expansion throughout the municipality’s different towns, and collaborated with private companies, in its aim to have fibre optics in 67.4% of Arona homes by the end of this year.

The starting point,

says an Arona Council spokesperson “was rather poor. Only Los Cristianos and Las Américas had fibre optics completely installed”.

The local council is now carrying out an intense plan of action to install fibre optics throughout the municipality, starting with Chayofa, La Camella, Valle San Lorenzo and Cabo Blanco, and work is well under way.

Mayor Mena added: “Fibreoptics service is a basic

and essential telecommunication system in this day and age, which residents and companies have demanded.

“This is logical because they want more speed and better quality when connecting to the internet.”

Wrong sea for kayaks

TWO pairs of kayakers had to be rescued off the Abades coast last Sunday after struggling to get back to shore in rough seas.

One kayak reached the coast, but smashed against the rocks. The two occupants were helped to shore by Civil Protection officers.

30-year-old woman, was suffering mild respiratory distress. She was taken to Candelaria hospital for further medical care.

The other woman, aged 20, had minor injuries only, and was taken to Arico medical centre for treatment.

The Maritime Rescue helicopter spotted the other kayak and escorted it to the beach, where it was decided that the two occupants had injuries which necessitated a hospital visit.

Hand-grenade found POLICE cordoned off part of the Taco area in Santa Cruz last weekend because a live hand-grenade was discovered in a shopping centre.

Parts of Calle San Borondón and the Centro Comercial Concorde were evacuated for precautionary measures.

The National Police bomb squad, which verified that it was a live grenade, carried out a controlled explosion.

A MARITIME rescue plane has finally found a boat full of immigrants, for whom they have been searching since Sunday.

The boat was discovered 145 miles south of Gran Canaria, and a rescue boat was sent on its way promptly to the location.

The Canaries’ Maritime rescue service was tipped off on Sunday that the boat had left the coast of Dakhla in Morocco, with 62 people on board.

This activated a search-and-rescue operation by air and sea, which proved successful. reopened soon afterwards, and the big question for police now is: “Where did it come from?”

Alarming finale for thieving trio THREE men, suspected of robbing an Arico restaurant after forcing the frontdoor lock, were arrested by the Guardia Civil.

The men, aged 36, 23 and 21, also disabled the property’s security cameras, but they forgot about the alarm system, which alerted the restaurant owners.

After triggering it, the trio fled immediately, but Guardia Civil officers discovered them hiding along the nearby coast, with a cash register holding 316 euros, and a sound system.

The getaway vehicle the thieves intended to use, which was parked outside the restaurant, had been stolen from Güímar the same day.

See the youngsters safely off to school ADEJE’S Department of Resident Participation, led

by Councillor Zebenzui Chinea Linares, is linking up the borough’s education centres to promote a “Camino Escolar Seguro”.

That means “a safe way to get to school”, and the project will work to improve safety for students as they travel to school from home.

The first phase involves

parents, who will be asked to take part in a poll by filling in a questionnaire.

It will enable planners to analyse the various ways students are travelling to school from home, to see where they need to plan or make changes.

A number of plans activated in the second phase should make everyone aware of the need to improve student safety, and seek their participation.

Councillor Chinea Linares said: “On a daily basis, we are seeing traffic-jams and tail-backs near schools at certain times of the day,

which, in turn, affects people on their way to work.

“With this new plan, we hope to improve that situation by decreasing traffic congestion, and guaranteeing better student safety.”

The project was presented to heads of the borough’s various public schools at last week’s meeting with the Council.

Spanish police hammer Liberty Seguros Syrian President’s uncle Cashback rewards POLICE in southern Spain have staged several raids on $736m of property assets belonging to Rifaat al-Assad, the uncle of Syria’s President.

The operation follows his investigation in France for tax fraud and moneylaundering less than a year ago, and a total of 503 properties involved have been confiscated.

The High Court said in a statement on its website that magistrate Jose de la Mata had ordered the confiscation of holiday homes, car parks, luxury apartments and rural estates worth $736m.

Authorities also seized a sprawling ranch in Puerto Banus, near Marbella, which is valued at around 60 million euros on the property market. In addition, they froze dozens of bank accounts.

French and Spanish authorities have been cooperating on the case, with Spain initiating a huge investigation on the back of

the French probe.

Rifaat, 79, is the brother of former Syrian dictator Hafez al-Assad, who is the father of current President Bashar alAssad.

Dubbed the “Butcher of Hama” for his alleged commanding role in the bloody suppression of the city’s 1982 uprising, he fled Syria later in the decade after attempting to seize power from his brother.

After the death of his brother Hafez in 2000, Rifaat made another bid for power, this time from his villa in Spain.

But the attempt failed when his nephew, Bashar, took charge.

Rifaat is believed to have received $300m of state cash, which he used to buy real estate in France, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg and Curacao.

And the Daily Telegraph newspaper reported that he was living in a $12m Mayfair town house in 2011.

Some of the assets are registered to Rifaat al-Assad and companies linked to him, and some to his wives, children and daughters-inlaw.

A Spanish citizen, who heads the company managing most of the Assad family’s business abroad, owns one of the blocked accounts.

In a statement released to Reuters, Rifaat al-Assad and his family responded by saying they had “never benefited from financing that, in any way, wronged the Syrian state and its people”.

The statement added: “They question the timing of these co-ordinated, judicial actions 33 years later, at a time when their country is suffering more than ever, and where Rifaat al-Assad’s voice should be heard to contribute to find a peaceful solution to the Syrian conflict.”

Reports suggest that Rifaat is too far away from Bashar al-Assad’s inner circle to be affected by asset freezes and travel restrictions, imposed by the European Union.

The property raids came a week after Spain’s High Court launched a criminal investigation against the Syrian security forces for their alleged role in the death, under torture, of a Spanish-Syrian truck-driver.

AN Arona resident, said to have taken wine-making equipment worth 20,000 euros without permission, has been investigated by the Guardia Civil.

Officers discovered that various items had been sold by the 55-year-old man to a third party for 6,000 euros, but all the equipment has been recovered.

Knife man attacked neighbour and cops

Grow-your-own drugs gang had a huge supply A GANG comprising 11 Spaniards (mainly family), a Moroccan and a Russian have been arrested by Guardia Civil officers, who discovered they were growing cannabis and selling cocaine.

LOCAL Police officers, with the help of the Guardia Civil, arrested a knifewielding man who tried to assault his neighbour on Monday night in La Orotava. But not without a struggle.

The police, having been told of a street fight, sent two units to the scene, where the assailant, in his forties and identified only as JPC, had kicked in his

neighbour’s front door and threatened him.

But the man ran off when he spotted the officers and hid in his own home.

Officers reasoned with him for an hour, until, finally, he opened his door and attacked them.

They finally managed to overcome him and cautioned him at their local headquarters. He was later held in custody at the La Villa court.

Meanwhile, his victim was treated by medics, having suffered an anxiety attack.

Officers first became aware of a well-known drug dealer in the town of Alpera in Albacete, who appeared to be selling large volumes of high-quality cocaine to local individuals.

They also established that several members of his family made up most of his “gang”. After keeping a constant watch on the dealer, he was followed to Villena, in Alicante, where he was buying cocaine as well as marijuana from three people, with whom he had a close relationship, and selling it in his home town.

While Guardia Civil officers kept the expanding gang

under surveillance, they became aware of a third location.

It was a warehouse in the Cañada area of Alicante, which persuaded them to close down the business.

Three of the gang were arrested on the A7 motorway, where officers seized 60,000 euros in cash.

At the warehouse, connected illegally to external electricity cables, they then discovered a plantation containing 54kg of cannabis, to be exported to Holland and Italy using foreign-registered vehicles with secret compartments.

As the raids continued, involving 13 properties in all, the total haul amounted to 46.9kg of high-purity cocaine, 496 marijuana plants, 150kg of amphetamines, plus a 9mm pistol and ammunition.

In addition, they discovered 105,738 euros and five cars, which were used for transporting the drugs, as well as computers and mobile phones.

Extra jobs since March of last year THE jobless tally in the Canaries fell by 12,109 people throughout March, which means a decrease of 4.99% compared with last year’s corresponding month.

It brings the number of unemployed people on the islands down to 230,779, according to the Ministry of Employment and Social Security.

However, the monthly data showed there were 879 more unemployed people, which is a 0.38% increase against February’s figures.

The jobless total in Santa Cruz de Tenerife province increased the most, by 0.73% (+794 unemployed), while in Las Palmas, the rise was a mere 0.07% (+ 85).

By gender, unemployment continues to be higher among women in the Canaries, with 125,589 unemployed, against the 105,190 men who are still jobless. In the under-25 bracket, unemployment stands at 14,506 people.

Adeje’s Easter statues EASTER Week, which is just about upon us, has been celebrated in some form in Adeje, from when it was a small town of just 310 inhabitants in 1561, right up until the present day.

Now, the incredible celebrations there are a reference point at national and international level.

The town is home to some revered and elaborate statues, which form an integral part of the Easter celebrations, leading solemn processions in villages, as well as on the main streets in the centre of Adeje.

And pictured here is the remarkable collection, which sees the precious statues come out every year from their resting places, to the delight of onlookers and worshippers alike.

La Piedad This statue, which belongs to the main parish church is the work of Seville sculptor Juan Ventura.

It first took part in Adeje’s Easter Week ceremonies during the 19th century. It features in the Friday of the Sorrows processions.

La Dolorosa (bottom) Tenerife artist Ezequiel de León created this 1980s’ work, which forms part of the Friday of the Sorrows processions.

Cristo de la Buena Muerte Made by the Belloso workshop, it is in the Palm Saturday procession.

Cristo de la Burrita (top right) This is the work of Juan Abascal and is seen on Palm Sunday.

Señor del Huerto A 19th century sculpture from the Levantine School of art, it is also part of Palm Sunday ceremonies in Los Olivos.

Señor Cautivo and Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza Both statues are from the Seville-based workshop of Álvarez Duarte, and they form an integral part of the Easter Monday processions.

Cristo crucificado The crucified Christ is part of Maundy Thursday’s Mandato procession and dates from 1995. It is a wooden cross and believed to be the work of Francisco Alonso de la

Raya. On that evening, there will also be a St John, from a 17th century Madrid school, which was sculptured by Seville artist Juan Abascal, el Señor de la Cena.

Cristo Yacente This comes from the Belloso workshop, and was recently restored by Adeje artist José Luis de León. This Christ is part of the Good Friday religious events, as is La Magdalena, a Canarian work from the 12th Century.

NEWS IN BRIEF Counterfeit-goods gang Couple’s masked terror

TWO masked men broke into a Gran Canaria apartment in Las Rehoyas, Las Palmas, and attacked the couple who own it, shooting a 35-year-old man.

They fled the scene before police arrived according to sources.

The terror incident happened last Friday evening, and emergency services were called by neighbours. They had heard gun-shots and a woman screaming for help and shouting: “They have killed him, they have killed him.”

Two ambulances and various National Police units went to the scene, where paramedics aided the victim, who suffered two gunshot wounds on one leg. Once stable, he was taken to hospital for more treatment.

100 child-porn arrests

MORE than 100 people have been arrested in Spain following an internet child-porn crackdown. And at least 10 of the young victims have so far been identified.

The Guardia Civil has traced 450,000 images and videos showing sexual abuse of babies and children, aged up to 14.

Some 90 houses were raided and more than 400 hard discs and other computer materials seized, leading cops to cuff 102 individuals. But their nationalities and identities remain unknown.

Jewel-laden suitcase found

NATIONAL Police in the south of Gran Canaria found a missing suitcase containing jewellery worth 100,000 euros, which its owner had lost at the airport.

A foreign couple reported the lost case, after leaving it in the lift, inadvertently, on their way to the car park. They didn’t realise their blunder until they were loading their cases into a rental car.

Happily for them, police found it in lost luggage in a storage unit in Maspalomas, with all the valuables intact, and returned it to them.

Driver’s 60m death fall

A MAN aged 70, from La Dehesa in La Palma, died after

his car plummeted 60 metres down a barranco in Mirca.

Firefighters retrieved the victim’s body, trapped inside the vehicle, which appears to have smashed through a wall on the road.

It then plummeted on to a track, rolling down further and landing in an orchard

FIVE people in Tenerife alleged to have falsified prestigious brand goods valued at more than three million euros, have been arrested.

Guardia Civil investigators uncovered four companies, three in Santa Cruz and one in Arona, selling wallets, handbags and clothing which were trademark counterfeits.

Police seized a total of 531

garments, 1,926 wallets, 2,335 belts, 1,051 bags and 1,025 logos from their premises.

In addition, the probe discovered how the items were introduced into the market.

The detainees imported large numbers of unbranded goods from China, and then bought prestigious logos they wanted to counterfeit from elsewhere, assembling the fake products in Tenerife.

The investigation, called “Copyright”, began last November. It is dedicated to

discovering crimes against intellectual property, after a person was arrested in La Palma, suspected of selling counterfeit products.

Counterfeit items worth some 9,000 euros were seized, and the Guardia Civil was told about their origin. This initiated an investigation to locate the wholesalers supplying street vendors and flea markets with trademark counterfeit goods.

Internet travel agencies used dodgy credit cards A SERIES of internet travel agencies, reckoned to have conned at least 1.5m euros from victims using fraudulent credit cards, has been dismantled by police, who have arrested 73 people across Spain.

They are understood to be connected to the scam, thanks to a single bank, which tipped off National Police by reporting the possible use of a forged credit card.

This led to an all-out investigation, which discovered that banks in Australia, Europe and the US were being duped by fake credit cards.

The criminals, based in Cadiz, Seville, Malaga, Marbella, Cordoba and Madrid, worked together to set up different online travel agencies, taking money from genuine customers and supplying air, sea and train tickets, which they purchased from the service

providers, using a whole range of dodgy credit cards.

It is also transpired that certain suppliers knew the cards were phoney, but they allowed them to be used in exchange for a percentage of the “profit” racked up.

In addition, the gang had set up a call-centre, through which a lot of the stolen money was routed. But

they failed to make SocialSecurity payments totalling some 300,000 euros, and, of the 73 arrested, 35 were involved in Social-Security evasion.

After raiding six premises, officers recovered computers, card-readers, fake cards from banks all over the world, and paper documentation.

City burglars were always street-wise A GANG of four, including a Bulgarian and his wife, have been arrested by the National Police for allegedly committing at least 19 burglaries in Pamplona, Valencia and Zaragoza, stealing mainly cash and jewellery.

The gang’s leader paid one individual 1,000 euros weekly to walk around different cities early in the morning, to identify potential properties which they could break into later.

And they did, on a regular basis, forcing locks or using skeleton keys.

The gang kept the stolen property, as well as the “tools of their trade” in separate storage rooms.

And their leader removed jewellery from storage regularly to sell to a contact in Madrid.

In fact, he was en-route to make a further sale when he was arrested in Valencia. His wife and two accomplices were arrested soon after.

When police searched the storage rooms they discovered cash, jewellery, masks, lock-picking equipment and other tools.

They also found a firearm, known to have been stolen from the home of a member of the armed forces.

Barnier’s EU scare for expats millions AS many as five million EU and British citizens would lose all existing EU rights if the UK can’t agree a final Brexit deal.

That’s the latest scaremongering, delivered

by European Union chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier.

But he did reassure representatives from the British In Europe (BIE) coalition that securing a deal on the rights of Brits living in the EU, and EU citizens living in the UK, was his “No.1 priority”.

He told them that a final Brexit deal would have to be reached within 16 months, to enable the European Parliament to approve a final bill.

Campaigners, including The Guardian journalist Giles Tremlett, who met Barnier last week, are now calling on the UK to secure an agreement, ring-fencing citizens’ rights, regardless of the final Brexit outcome.

Madrid-based Tremlett told the Olive Press: “Uncertainty and limbo remain. If they get to the end of the negotiations and they can’t agree, we will fall off the edge of the cliff and become foreigners in the way, for example, an American or an Australian is.

“The campaign now is to get the UK to change Barnier’s

mind. Those of us who hoped that putting citizens first meant a watertight deal, whatever else happened, have had our hopes dashed.

“We must now apply pressure to our parliament and to MPs to change Barnier’s stance.”

During the 40-minute meeting, Barnier said he hoped to secure “almost all” the rights of the five million,

and that, from now on, he would hold regular roundtable meetings with the coalition group.

Members of Brexit’s Department For Exiting The EU (DEXEU) have now agreed to meet with the BIE group next week, “after months of nagging”, said Tremlett.

He added: “It seems the timing is not a coincidence.

It must have been because Barnier agreed to meet us.

It has taken that for the UK Government to get interested.”

Tremlett, campaigning for British expats living in Spain to be granted dual nationality, will deliver a letter to the Spanish Government this week, calling for a meeting with British-based campaign group Espanoles en El Reino Unido, and expats in Spain.

“The important thing is to stand as one and not be divided by the negotiators,” he said. “Whatever happens to the Spanish in Britain will happen to the British in Spain.”

AIRSOFT is a sport in which participants eliminate opponents by hitting each other with plastic balls, using replica weapons called Airsoft guns.

TUESDAY saw the dramatic rescue of a seven-weekold Siamese kitten from the roof of the El Fraile Cultural Centre.

Its cries were heard high above the street below, and, despite efforts to rescue it with ladders, it was necessary to call the Fire Brigade.

They expertly swung into action, resulting in the little one being

safely brought to the ground. How she got there is a mystery, made even more so

by the fact that she is almost blind. She can see little more than shadows.

The poor little girl was dazed and confused, but is now in foster care with Cats Welfare for the evaluation of her special needs. She will need lots of love and a secure, indoor home, but the charity will ensure that her future is brighter, and a whole lot safer.

Thieving trio promised victims sexual favours A despicable trio have been arrested in Alicante for stealing from the elderly by promising “sexual favours”, among other tactics, to lure their victims.

The man and two women were believed to have selected their victims, then waited for them to be alone before moving in.

This method is known in Spain as “affectionate robberies”, the women going as far as kissing their intended victims and promising to perform sexual acts to gain trust before picking their pockets, or helping themselves to jewellery.

There were also reports

of the grotesque threesome pulling the same stunts in graveyards.

They tried it on with one elderly widower as he wept over the grave of his wife. And they even stooped as low as assaulting

and robbing him after their advances were rejected.

The group face five charges of violent robbery, as well as 14 charges of theft, and one of being part of a criminal organisation.

Airsoft is commonly compared with paintball, with some key differences. Unlike paintballs, airsoft pellets do not mark their target.

We were very excited to meet up this week with Tenerife legends Paul Fitzpatrick, Marc Craig and Johnny Grennan to discuss M³, the latest live band everyone is talking about.

With a collection of 12 Tenerife Entertainment Awards, and over 50 years’ experience entertaining on the island between them, it’s easy to understand why this newly-formed trio is attracting so much attention.

“After a week of playing together, we looked at each other and agreed that we just couldn’t believe it.

such a forward-thinking team, leaves me very excited as to what the future holds.”

Robert recalled: “Over the last 20 years, I’ve seen the

nightlife change in Tenerife, and I knew that a certain market was missing. There was a more-mature generation who were not ready to go home at

11pm, and they wanted something more.

“With the talent these guys have, and their past history, the story has almost written itself. Excuse the pun, but it really is magical.

“I’m elated to have them at our club, and it’s a great reward to see people having such a good time because of these guys. When they’re on stage, they just feed off each other. They don’t look or sound like a new band they just click.

“It´s an honour to have them performing for us and working their Magic on the crowd.”

Paul added: “We’re performing seven songs from the top-10 download chart at the moment, and I’ve never done that before. It’s so exciting and fresh, after all these years, to still be able to grow as a performer, and take such pride in what we do.”

Marc agreed, saying: “It’s M to the power of three!

Each of us has been popular in other acts, but, in all my years as a performer, I’ve never had so much respect and so many compliments from my peers.

“It’s a place where they want to be entertained, and they come to see us when they finish their own gigs. In fact, people are disappointed, as are we, when we pack up at 2am, and they want us to carry on.”

So how did this talented threesome arrive at the Magic Lounge?

Paul said: “I returned to the UK three years ago, after being over here for 17 years. But Rob persuaded me to come back and work at Magic, and help create something unique with the others, and I’ve got a lot of faith in this project.

“It had to be something extraordinary and special for me to return, because it meant uprooting my family, but it’s a reward for 20 years of hard graft.”

Marc and his wife, Rebecca, are proud parents to Isaac, two, and four-month-old Lucas, while Paul and his wife, Alison, enjoy family life with sons Liam, 14, and Max, five, and two-year-old daughter Erin.

Not so easy for Britons to be Spanish citizens SINCE 23rd June last year, when Britain held its Brexit referendum, there has been a continual surge in applications by British residents in Spain wishing to obtain citizenship.

That’s according to the Instituto Cervantes, Spain’s cultural institution that administers the two citizenship tests required, among other things, to obtain a Spanish passport.

One of the exams tests applicants on their familiarity with Spanish society and culture. The other one determines their command of the Spanish language.

Applications for the first

examination grew significantly among Spanishbased Brits between January and June 2016, but just 70 Britons took the test. Yet between the June referendum and February of this year, that figure rose to 423.

A similar picture emerges for the language examination: 50 applicants in the months before the referendum, and 281 between then and February.

In both cases, most of the applicants are aged between 46 and 64 and live in Madrid, Barcelona, Alicante or Málaga.

Michael Harris, a writer who lives in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, just north of the Spanish capital, has been living in the country since 1982. And, at age 61, he has passed both tests.

of the Brexit vote,” he said. “As English citizens, we were just like any Spaniards, except that we couldn’t vote in regional or general elections. Now, with Brexit, I am worried about losing my rights as a European citizen. And I want to remain one.”

Mr Harris, whose wife is Spanish, is Vice-President of Eurocitizens, a group created by British residents in Spain to preserve their rights as Europeans.

Hilary Plass, who teaches English at Saint Louis University, an American educational centre in Madrid, is also a British national. The 63-year-old, who has been living in Spain for the last 30 years, has just taken the tests.

But she doesn’t believe she will get her papers for another three years.

“Besides passing both tests,

you have to prove that you have resided in Spain for 10 years in a row. You also have to provide your birth certificate, your British and Spanish criminal records, and take everything to the Civil Registry Office for evaluation by the Justice Ministry,” said Hilary.

“I pay my taxes here; I have a life, a job and lots of friends here. I don’t want to be told in five years that I have to leave.”

She estimates that all the paperwork will cost her around 700 euros, and believes that many British residents in Spain are unwilling to take the examination because they either speak no Spanish or don’t have the money.

“There is no dualnationality treaty between Spain and the UK,” she added. “In theory, if you adopt Spanish citizenship,

you must renounce your British nationality, although, in practice, this does not happen. It’s nearly impossible to stop being British!”

Anthony Luke, a 62-yearold journalist, has lived in Spain for 50 years. His wife is Spanish and his children were born in Madrid. But, like Hilary, what worries him the most is the uncertainty of what will happen after Brexit, although he isn’t concerned that much because “there has to be a solution”.

He added: “We hope to pressure both sides into including us in a special designation, in which we will not be considered foreigners.

“But, until then, it will be more convenient to have citizenship than to be asking for residency or work permits.”

Take That said: “We are really looking forward to performing material from our new album ‘Wonderland’ some of it for the first time. But a Take That special would not be the same without a few classics also thrown into the mix!”

Golf: The Masters

Hazel Irvine presents live and uninterrupted coverage of the final day’s play at The Masters at Augusta, where the world’s best golfers will be battling it out to claim the coveted green jacket.

The winner will follow in the footsteps of some of the most illustrious names in golf, including legendary figures such as Seve Ballesteros, Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods.

While 59 of the previous 80 Masters titles have been won by golfers from the USA, there have been plenty of overseas winners in recent years, such as Australian Adam Scott in 2013 and Englishman Danny Willett in 2016.

Obesity: How prejudiced is the NHS? Tuesday 11th April, BBC2, 21.00

Britain has a serious problem with obesity - and the medical cost is threatening to bankrupt our health service.

Professor Rachel Batterham, Head of the obesity services at University College Hospital and a research scientist (pictured), presents this curren-affairs documentary. In it she explores whether there is ‘fat prejudice’ against obese patients within parts of the NHS that is stopping them accessing a potentially-cost-effective surgery, even when recent scientific research supports it.

Professor Batterham considers obesity to be a disease that needs specialist treatment, including weight-loss surgery, whereas many others contend that it is a lifestyle choice. She meets several NHS patients who say they were made to feel “not worthy” and were denied life-changing bariatric surgery and other routine operations. This seems to show evidence of a bias within the health service. She also speaks to others who have tried to use the NHS weight-management services, with one admitting it actually made her gain two stone.

Professor Batterham speaks to bariatric surgeon Chris Pring and people who have had weight loss surgery to examine the dramatic effect gastric bypasses can have on person’s lifestyle and overall health - and how it can even cure other weight-related illnesses.

In the programme she also meets patients who are successfully using the diet-and-lifestyle programme called Tier 3 services, which the NHS require them to do for two whole years before being considered for surgery.

Could weight-loss surgery actually be a more-cost-effective method of treatment for the NHS?

In this ambitious six-part series, 70 children aged between 6 and 11 across the UK tell us what they really think of the world - with insightful, funny and moving results.

Equipped with cameras at home they film their own lives through major events, while their after-school clubs are rigged with cameras and a number of tasks devised by philosophers shake through the big issues of the day, offering an intimate insight into how children think.

For this series, Gordon Poad (pictured) and a team of philosophers have developed a collection of real-life dilemmas and challenges to find out what children really think. There’s a suitcase of cash in the street: should they walk away, keep the money or call the police? Who deserves to get on the lifeboat of a sinking ship if there aren’t enough places for everyone?

What new law would they bring in if they were Mayor for the day?

Each challenge is brought to life not just by the children’s ideas, but more revealingly by how they convince their friends to get on board with their choices.

Escape to the Chateau Channel 4, 18.05

Dick and Angel Strawbridge continue their French adventure in a second series. It’s 18 months since they left their Southend flat for a new life in a fairy-tale castle in France, but restoring the dilapidated 45 room chateau which cost them only £280k has not proved easy. With just nine rooms renovated so far and areas in the vast 12-acre estate still to explore, they’ve only just scratched the surface of the renovation. But the chateau must start paying for itself. The couple have grand plans for staging weddings and also to feed themselves through crops and livestock.

Gold Coast Highlights.

The best of the action and reaction from the second round of the World Series, held on the same Gold Coast course in Australia that will be used for 2018’s Commonwealth Games.

In the absence of Britain’s Brownlee brothers, the frontrunners are likely to be Spanish pair Javier Gomez and Mario Mola, world champions past and present. Mola won this race in 2016, while five-time world champion Gomez began the current campaign with victory in March on his return to World Series action after a lengthy break.

In the women’s event, Britain’s Jodie Stimpson was looking to build on her silver medal in March’s first stage, which marked her comeback from a sixmonth lay-off with an Achilles injury. She was pipped on the line in Abu Dhabi by New Zealand Andrea Hewitt, who was also due to compete in this race.

5 Gold Rings

Sunday 9th April, ITV1, 19.00

Five Gold Rings, hosted by Phillip Schofield, is a brand new quiz show where all the answers are somewhere on a huge interactive floor. Teams just need to find them using five gold rings.

Two teams compete for up to £25,000. A picture appears on the floor, a question is asked and the team need to place a gold ring on the answer. Get it wrong and they lose a ring. Get it right and they move up to the next level, which is worth more money but their ring gets smaller. The team that performs the best takes control of the final, where only one of them can take home the money they’ve earned.

This week, best friends Daniel and Alex face partners Stephanie and Jimmy. They’re competing for up to £25,000 but only one team can leave with the money.

‘Tell me another one’

“YOU should write a book” they say! Just when I think I’ve heard it all, up pops another amazing comment about what people think about their hair.

Trying to convince someone that what they believe about hair and hairdressing is incorrect can be frustrating - but also funny. During my years of styling, I’ve heard about remedies and old-wives’ tales that, sometimes, even shock me.

These include cures for dry hair using olive oil, egg whites massaged into the scalp to prevent hair loss, and talc to soak up greasy scalps.

Kitchen ingredients are for cooking and not for applying to your hair. I’ve yet to see any of these

tricks really work well.

Shaving off your hair will not make it grow back quicker and thicker, neither will brushing it vigorously before bedtime. These are tales that are spread around without any scientific backing, which sometimes create problems for us in the salon, as some people really believe them.

Most hair products claim to do what they say on the bottle, yet many bend the truth so that it appears that what they are claiming is true. Extra volume, extra thickness and extra shine are all either synthetic, or rarely provide the results they are claiming.

“Your hair will turn green if you colour it while pregnant”, and there’s always a new “cure” for baldness or

thinning hair. The best I’ve ever heard is that you should only cut your hair when there is a full moon, because it will grow back thicker and stronger … please!

Your stylist is here for a reason; to give free, honest advice about any aspect of your hair.

We should aim to tell the truth, even though, sometimes, the truth can hurt.

This is how stylists work.

Some may call themselves hairdressers, but being in the hair trade is all about experience and knowledge, and not selling fabricated stories just to keep clients happy.

After all, you leave the salon with our work on your head, and are a walking advert for our craft, which speaks volumes about the effort and creativity put into it.

Getting these factors right can be the difference between a fashion disaster and fashion compliments.

So, how do you find those colours that are going do you favours? You need to first start with your skin tone - ashen, warm, red, tanned or dark - then find

the colours that match.

Lighter skins should avoid cool colours like blues, greens and greys; instead, go for pinks, reds and oranges. If your skin is of a rosier type, then stay away from reds, pinks and hotter colours.

Look out for blues, greens and metallics; these will counteract your complexion.

Darker skins are luckier because they can get away with more or less anything, except browns or too much black. Primary colours look great with this skin tone.

It’s all about personal

taste, too. As you put together your colour collection, if it feels good to you, then you’re going to be happy wearing it. Using coloured scarves placed near your face is easier than trawling the shops, hunting down your ideal colours.

Once you’ve studied the shades that suit you, you’re ready to shop.

Getting these aspects of fashion right makes it so much easier to colour-match your skin tone.

THERE are often costs incurred, other than the agreed purchase price, when buying or selling a car, either privately, from a garage, or even a new model from a registered dealer.

We have all seen the big billboards advertising brand-new cars stating “from 7,995 euros”, for example. This low price is to grab your interest and is, normally, for the base model, without matriculation (registration costs) being shown. And that cost will almost certainly include financing and the Scrappage Scheme. With many new cars sold now, you do not even have a spare wheel as standard. But this is not always mentioned and/or is either added to the cost of the car or simply ignored.

Hidden costs of car-buying It means the buyer is left without a spare wheel and knows nothing about this until he/she actually NEEDS one!

With the purchase of a second-hand car, there are normally three costs of which you should be aware.

Firstly, there is a Tax (Impuesto) payable to ensure the complete transfer. The tax is 5.5% of the official valuation, which is obtained from the Tax Office.

It is prudent to remember that this tax is based on the official valuation and not the price you are paying.

If, say, you buy a car privately for 3,500 euros, it is highly likely that the Official valuation will be considerably higher.

So, though you may have budgeted on tax of 192,50 euros if the official valuation is, for example, 4,100 euros, the tax would be 225,50 euros, which is a fairly substantial difference.

If you do not pay this fee, the Tax office will eventually issue you with a fine, and you will also have to pay the

difference, in this case, 33 euros.

The next cost is that of the Tasa, payable to Trafico, to complete the transaction.

There is no way of avoiding this charge, and, for a vehicle transfer, the cost is 53,40 euros.

Unless you are fluent in Spanish and know where to find all the necessary forms and information to do this, it is advisable to use a Gestoria, or registered person, who carries out these types of transactions regularly.

He or she will have all the necessary knowledge and the correct information, and will be able to advise you of any potential problems - for a cost, of course.

Registered people can normally do the transfer quicker than a Gestoria, and, often, if they are in the vehicle business, they will be more experienced.

That’s because a Gestoria deals with a wider variety of transactions.

When purchasing a second-

hand car from a garage, the transfer cost is often included, because it is in the interest of the garage to not only protect its customer, but also its reputation.

How often have you heard people say; “I bought my car from such and such a garage, or person, six months ago and I don’t have any paperwork?”

A car with no paperwork is worthless unless you have the documentation to prove ownership: the Ficha Tecnica and Permiso de circulation in your name.

If not, then the vehicle, in the eyes of Spanish Law, is not yours, even though you have paid for it in full.

Having said that, there is a short period after your purchase when you will not have the official documents.

As is normal in Spain, all relevant authorities require sight of original documentation, and so it is with a car transfer.

As we all know, Spain works on a mañana basis, so you have to be patient. But do make sure the paperwork is all in order.

Be a burger-builder!

TED’S Grill is a must-place to be if you really enjoy your food, and the outlook. The Veronicas bar has been open for about four months, and has free wifi and a beautiful terrace with fantastic sea views.

We were welcomed warmly, and, once seated, my companion and I enjoyed a good chat with the manager, Christian, who told us all about the restaurant, while Julie, our attentive waitress, took our drinks order.

One of the first things we noticed was the shiny, clean, open-plan kitchen, where we could help ourselves to sauces ranging from lemon and herb, to the super-spicy inferno!

The menu was amazing,

and it was difficult to decide because there was so much to choose from!!

Ted’s salad is a must: sweet potato, avocado, red onions, baby tomatoes, cucumber, mixed leaves and feta cheese, with the crème de la crème - the lemon-and-herb chicken - on top.

It was one of the most tender, delicious pieces of chicken I have ever tasted!

We decided to “build our own burger”, choosing onion rings, cheese and mushrooms, and a side-dish of potato fries. Incidentally, there are over 20 side-dishes from which to choose.

And if you select the Nando’s-style chicken, you can order it to your liking: healthy-style steamed, then BBQ’d with a sauce of your own choice; lemon and herb, mild, medium and the megaspicy inferno.

Ted’s is also renowned for its

super-size ribs and burgers, which are mouth-watering, to say the least!

You can also “cook your own steak” and share it with a friend. If one of you prefers it rare, and the other well done, you can cook it to your liking.

Mexican food is also on the menu, as well as pastas and combo meals. If you fancy a full English breakfast, or maybe even a Sunday lunch, it’s all there at Ted’s.

And do try the frozen cocktail smoothies… they’re delicious!

In loving Memory of Alice Tyler

Beloved wife of the late Johnny Tyler, loving mother, grandmother and great grandmother, Alice, passed away peacefully on 30th March, aged 95 years.

For the last 30 years she lived in the village of Sueno Azul , Callao Salvaje, and brought a smile to everyone she met with her unique sense of humour and outlook on life (which stayed with her right to the end). She will be deeply missed by so many of us. R.I.P Alice.

DURING kitten season, it’s not unusual to discover a nest of unattended kittens, or a single kitten seemingly abandoned by its mother.

First: wait and watch The mother may be searching for food. Try to determine if she is coming back for them, or if they are truly orphaned. If you need to leave before she comes back, carefully evaluate whether the kittens are in immediate danger from stray dogs, for example, or if they are located in an area with heavy foot or car traffic.

To help with your decision, it is important to know that it might take several hours for the mother cat to return, and healthy kittens can survive this period without food, as long as they are warm. Kittens are much more at risk of hypothermia than starvation. Remove them only if they are in immediate, grave danger, or very cold to the touch.

If the mother cat returns If mum returns and the area is relatively safe, leave the kittens alone with her until they are weaned. You can offer regular food to mum, but keep the food a little way away because she will not want to attract other cats to food located near her

nest.

Five weeks is the optimal age to take the kittens from the mother, but remember that females can become pregnant while they are still nursing, so please inform us so we can try to trap and neuter her.

If the mother cat does not return If, for any reason, she does not come back, you should remove the kittens and ring us immediately.

You must keep the kittens warm; this is crucial to the kittens’ survival, but do not try to feed them anything, especially cows’ milk which is dangerous.

Ali is a beautiful, tabby, twoyear-old male, incredibly friendly and brilliant with other cats. Unfortunately, his owner couldn’t look after him any more, so he’s looking for a new home.

K9 Animal News

Meet Arya Arya came to K9 with her mum and six brothers and sisters when she was only four weeks old.

They all soon had new homes and families.

Sadly, Arya’s new mum is now very ill and her dad needs to look after her, so, at six months old, she is back at the refuge looking for her forever family.

Arya says: “We are all very sad and my dad is very worried about me, but sometimes bad things just happen.

My people here at K9 say I am such a smart, young girl. I have been lucky enough to go to puppy-training classes recently, and everyone agrees I am top of the class.

“Even my class teacher says this, so I know it's true! Now I sit, stay, lie down, come to my name and walk to heel.

I can do a high-five, too, but that’s just for fun.

“I have to say that it has

all been quite easy for me. I think it’s because I love learning things.

I’m a friendly girl, and just love to be with people. Sometimes it's to have fun, but also to chill and relax.

“Do you please have a place in your home and heart for me? All I want is a loving, happy family to grow up with.

Summer League shines

TUESDAY was the first night of the Arona Foods Summer Pool League, which is an offshoot of the Direct Telecom League.

To make this league interesting, there is a handicap system to ensure that high-flyers such as Gaffers don’t run away with it.

Some of the teams who struggled in the Direct Telecom League last season started with a plus-points bonus.

On the opening night, Hammers hosted Bluebell, who gave a fine account of themselves. Hammers went 3-0 up in the singles, but Bluebell came back to level at 3-3.

Hammers then took the last two frames to claim five points, and, more importantly, stopped Bluebell from gaining any points from the singles.

In the team game (a new concept for the Summer League), Bluebell got off to a flyer and raced into a 45-34 lead. Sadly for them, however, they could not maintain that momentum

In Los Abrigos, Geoff and the boys hosted Treehouse at the Phoenix, and this proved a very tasty draw: both teams of equal ability and both teams with just

three players, which is the minimum number required.

Treehouse raced into a 4-0 lead with some really good pool, only for Phoenix to pull a couple back.

Geoff played well to beat

Mark, but he couldn’t stop the Treehouse lads from sneaking the main match. A great clearance from Scott got Treehouse over the line to claim five points.

And Treehouse also won the team game. Scott made a 12 break at first, followed by a massive 21 in his fourth visit. This was too much for the Phoenix, and Treehouse took all the points.

Exiles travelled to Gaffers and gave a good account of themselves, holding the home side to 4-4 in the singles, which gave Exiles five points.

The team game, however, was another story. Neil ‘the gaffer’, smashed in a 24-point break at his second visit, which left Exiles trailing 34-6 at the end of the second round.

It was always going to be enough, and the final 5516 score gave Gaffers 10 points. But Exiles claimed a respectable five from their efforts in the singles.

Dreamers hosted Terrace in Los Cristianos, and this was always going to be tough for the boys from the Golf. And so it proved!

Dreamers thumped them 8-0 in the singles, and won the team game as well,

despite the absence of high breaks.

Consistent Dreamers ran out 55-28 winners to claim all 10 points.

In Torviscas, at Palms bar, the scene was set for war!

Governor Mark and his team of Rebels (Palms 2) were about to do battle with the other Governor, Graeme, and his Elite squad (Palms 1).

They didn’t disappoint because they certainly staged a war. Sadly, though, not all of it took place on the table.

Palms 1 ran out 5-3 winners of the singles, which was close, and won the team game 55-47, so they took all the points. But Palms 2 certainly gave them a run for their money.

The Summer League has had a great start, and, as with any new format, there will be a few tweaks. From next week, there will be alternate referees looking over the team game.

The League has eight weeks to run, and it will be close all the way. It could well be decided by count-back on singles frames won.

Neil holds the highest break with a huge 24, which will take some beating. But it’s early days…

Ladies’ Football

Still buzzing along GRANADILLA, still buzzing from their derby victory in front of a record 7,000-plus crowd, continued their winning ways at Betis with just 500 fans watching.

But they consolidated their seventh position in Spain’s Premier League after a scare just after the break.

Jackie Simpson set up Virgy for Granadilla´s opening goal after 10 minutes, and that was how it stayed until half-time.

The whistle had barely blown for the restart before

Betis 1 Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife 3 Bea-Parra made it allsquare. But Granadilla kept cool and waited for their moment, when Pisco fired in a fierce, 70th-minute shot.

The ball rebounded out and was despatched by Maria Estella to forge a 2-1 lead. Paloma then led a late charge, hitting the post with a shot. It struck the post, but she recovered well to feed the ball to Ana, who sealed the win in injury-time.

This coming week, Granadilla have a Good Friday home game against Bilbao at El Medano, with a noon kick-off.

Tacuense drew on their spirited performance in the derby clash to frustrate second-placed Barcelona for much of their home game in La Laguna.

Hermoso opened the scoring for the visitors after 11 minutes, but their anticipated flow of goals did not materialise, thanks to a tight defensive display by the home side.

Then, after 58 minutes, Tacuense rocked Barcelona with a Tania penalty.

It proved to be a brief respite, though, before Barcelona added their winner, Hermoso again on target to complete a hardfought, 2-1 victory.

Phoenix flying high WITH league matters done and dusted for the 2016/2017 Oasis FM darts league season, we turned our attentions to last Friday's Canarian Weekly team handicap knockout cup finals.

All four teams involved play in the First Division, so some real drama and closefought matches were expected.

The Trophy half of the competition saw Pas O Nadas A face Phoenix Bar at Palms Pool Bar with only 16 points between them in the handicap, and the draw pitching two of the league's young guns in the first rubber.

It was obvious to all that nerves got the better of

the Nadas' Ricky, and Carl from Phoenix. But the younger lad got Phoenix off to a fine start, taking the game, 2-1.

That seemed to spur on Phoenix as they took the second and third points, leaving Mitch to beat Gualty, which he did, to seal a firstever victory for Phoenix in this event. Much Dorada was consumed, I can assure you!

Palms Sports Bar

Over at Nauta Bar, the Plate final pitched Division 1 champions Scruffy Macs against Palms Sports Bar, who held a 144-point head start. And they soon put this to good use as they went into a 2-1 lead in the singles.

But the Scruffy lads were having none of it, roaring back to take all the remaining points to secure the cup, and wrap up a fine double

for the campaign.

Memorial Trophy Tonight (Friday, 7th April), players from across the league will be turning out to do battle in the Memorial Trophy singles knockout competition.

All proceeds from this event, and our Presentation Night raffle, go to charity, and this year we will again be supporting

the Cancer Bus, a very worthy and popular cause.

Three venues are being used this year, with Division 1 players at Nauta Bar, Division 2 at Bar 180 and the ladies at Ourplace.

The finalists in all three sections get their chance to play on the big stage at Showtime during our annual silverware fest, which we call Presentation Night. Good luck to you all.

Eyes on the prizes YOU know it’s a great season when your stadium is even winning honours! And Iberostar Tenerife will be performing in front of their home fans for the European Champions League’s Final Four weekend on 28th and 30th April.

The Pabellon Santiago Martin in La Laguna was chosen as host over rivals Banvit BK of Turkey, AS Monaco of France, and Italy’s Reyer Venezia (Venice).

That called for a celebration and Tenerife duly obliged, beating Zaragoza 65-54 at home on Sunday to reclaim top spot in the Liga Endesa.

There was no hangover from the midweek ECL win over Lyon, but a solid, defensive

platform for a convincing win. It was close all the way, but a 23-12 final quarter blew away the opposition.

Tim Abromaitis was the star with 19 points, and Aaron Doornekamp weighed in with 13.

A 4,000 crowd, just a few days after the

5,000 sell-out for the European triumph, showed the enormous appetite there is for basketball on the island.

The Final Four semifinals, to be played on Friday 28th April, will be drawn in the next few days. Saturday will be a rest day, with

Sunday serving up the third-place play-off before the grand final.

Officials from the European Champions League were mightily impressed with the organisation and presentation of the Lyon home game, and none of the other teams could match the crowd capacity.

It will still cost stadium owner Tenerife Cabildo 400,000 euros for the rights to stage the finals. It had already been sounded out about increasing the capacity for next season, but it will be almost impossible to add any new seating in the next few weeks.

But an increase to a 6,000 capacity, has now been mentioned for the next campaign.

Defending the dream

By Colin Kirby FORWARDS take the glory, and everyone wants them for their sticker collection.

But Tenerife’s home win over Real Oviedo was all about the defence.

And, to be fair, the result was all down to an exceptionallygenerous referee, who awarded the game-winning, phantom penalty!

The stage was set: blazing sunshine, a bumper 17,353 crowd, and Gaku Shibasaki getting his first start on the left wing in place of suspended Aaron, with Omar taking the right side.

Toche was the danger man up front for Oviedo. But with Carlos Ruiz back in the heart of the home defence for German, also suspended, Tenerife repelled the early raids.

It was clear from the start that the wide changes weren’t working, and that Amath was not getting the service he needed to add to his 11-goal tally.

But the kindly ref was keen to help. Aitor Sanz took on a couple of Oviedo defenders in the box and there was a mild tussle. Yet David Perez Palias surprised everyone by blowing his whistle and pointing to the spot. It was such a soft call, but Sanz was happy to convert the penalty.

CD Marino NO goals, no drive, and, on this form, no promotion play-offs!

Marino needed to win this home game to complete three straight wins and keep snapping at the top four.

But this was a poor display.

High, long balls from both sides dominated play. Great for those on the top floor of the nearby hospital, but not so uplifting for those longing to see more direct football.

The game hinged on a foul

by Marino´s Ubeda on Arturo in the penalty area.

The ref ignored it and the visitors spent the rest of the game seething.

Arturo looked the most likely scorer, but he saw an early shot bounce off Lolo and a header too high of the target.

In addition, Marino had to be grateful to Marco for a couple of smart saves, and

The Oviedo keeper had a quiet first half after that as his aggrieved team-mates lay siege to Tenerife, pinning them back in their own half.

It was time for the defence to earn their corn, and Dani Hernandez needed both hands to deflect a free-kick over the home bar. He also

snuffed out another shot low at the post. Camille headed clear under pressure, and Raul Camara made a couple of timely interventions.

Alberto had another outstanding game just in front of the back four. He has added calmness and subtlety to his slightly-

wild approach of previous seasons, and his tackles and general awareness of potential danger were a big factor in Tenerife reaching half-time with the lead intact.

Tenerife never threatened Oviedo’s keeper, even though he spent much of his time far off his line … if only Aaron had been there to curl a shot over him!

It was no surprise to see Choco Lozano start the second half in place of Omar, to end Amath´s loneliness.

And at last, Tenerife showed some form. Choco was hacked down by Verdes after getting into a threatening position, but the final ball was still lacking.

Vitolo was replaced by Rachid, another January signing who has been sidelined by injuries, and he looked sprightly, stirring up things in the midfield.

But there was still plenty of menace from Oviedo. Toche powered his way through and flattened Dani when

some excellent clearing headers from Brad, and especially from Pedro at the far post.

Too often, Marino had little time to control the high balls as they plummeted down, from goal-kicks and potential passes.

Marco tipped over a Jorge shot just before the break, and Marino´s Amed beat

two defenders before running out of options.

A better second half was everyone’s wish but there was only a slight improvement.

Adan replaced Valiente, but even his long stride was hard-pushed to match the poor quality of service.

Fran Delgado tried the more direct route, only to be

blocked by Juaje´s run out of his goal.

The game seemed destined to remain goal-less. Santa Ursula thought they had done enough, but Brad and Uneda both cleared shots from close to the goal.

And Juanqui was guilty of a glaring miss for the visitors as the ball trickled across the home goal.

they both went for the ball.

But the keeper was soon back on his feet and showing the forward who was boss.

Gaku left the field to a generous ovation. He hadn’t made any impact, but his extended run-out will, hopefully, benefit the team in future games.

On came Suso, but a short burst of his die-hard style of play failed to add further spark to Amath and Choco.

Meanwhile, Oviedo were anxious for a goal to boost their own promotion playoff hopes. Raul Camara was at his best when seeing off Christian, and he urged the fans to turn up the volume even higher.

Carlos Ruiz cleared a shot from just in front of the goal-line, which was a heartstopping moment. But the defence stood firm, and the relief at the final whistle was mixed with celebrations for another three points.

That just leaves 10 league games, and it’s Rayo Vallecano away tomorrow (Saturday) at 7.30 pm.

Tenerife have risen to third in the division, six points behind Girona, who occupy the second automatic promotion place … and they are the next visitors to Santa Cruz!

The chase is on.

Fran Alonso arrived for Amed, but the move failed to inspire an all-out assault on the visitors from North Tenerife.

Santa Ursula were getting very frustrated as they peppered the home goal.

Jorge let loose a rocket shot that brought a great one-handed save from Marco, while Mendy cleared another threat in his usual, calm style.

Just as Marino looked to be turning the tide, Kevin Castro was held back by Tello. He even made as if to pull off his own shirt as a frustrated offering to his antagonist.

Needless to say, Castro received his second booking of the afternoon and was sent off.

The final 10 minutes proved bad-tempered and strained, with the ref’s fan club growing smaller by the minute.

There was no room for any inspiration, and the draw did little good for either team.
