DON’T RISK A DRINK-DRIVE CHRISTMAS
THE Christmas party season is upon us, and it’s a time of fun and joy for many. But it is also a vital period, in which drivers must increase their awareness of all the risks, and especially the dangers of consuming alcohol or drugs. Continued on Page 3

Choose right: Don’t drink! Continued from Front As workers, families and friends all come together to celebrate, it is, perhaps, easier to become a little complacent and have a “small” tipple. But remember, above all, that consuming alcohol or drugs before driving increases the risks greatly, which is why the penalties are so severe. They are in place to serve as a deterrent for those who risk their own lives and the lives of others. The stark warning comes from the N332 campaign, which was devised by a group of traffic police in Spain at the start of the year to help keep our roads as safe as possible. For that reason, the Guardia Civil traffic department, supported by National, Regional and Local Police forces, will carry out extensive checks on alcohol and drug use on the roads of Spain, including Tenerife, every day, around the clock, from now until after Christmas. The main campaign runs until Sunday week (Christmas Day)
and beyond, with officers out in force throughout, keeping a watchful eye on drivers. Although it is common for traffic police to seek out habitual offenders, the festive season usually means an increase in those who would not normally drink and drive, so they also pose a significant risk. Latest figures from the most recent data available suggests that there could be some 12,000 drivers meeting this continually-dangerous criteria. So far this year, the detection rate is approaching 100,000 drivers, who not only risk their own lives but those of many innocent victims. The National Institute of Toxicology’s 2015 annual report shows that the 39.09% of deceased drivers had alcohol or drugs in their blood last year. The figure increased to 40% when pedestrians were analysed. Even the smallest amount of alcohol or drugs can affect driving ability and so, despite
Spain having considerablylower maximum limits than countries such as the UK, the best, and only, advice must always be “zero” consumption before getting behind the wheel. Remember, the only safe limit is ZERO. If you are planning to join in the party celebrations, do so by all means, of course. But leave the car at home. Like everywhere else, all our local towns have taxi services, with professional drivers willing to take you where you wish. So enjoy a drink and let others drive. The N332 project supports any campaign that will help reduce the number of deaths and serious injury on the roads, caused by alcohol and drug use. The project has also created some graphics to support the campaign. Making the choice between two vehicles - a police car on the left or a taxi on the right - the N332 campaign slogan is #chooseright. Download the Facebookready images from the n332.es
website and share them with your friends, showing your support to #chooseright. The campaign is, of course, based in Spain, but the advice is equally as valid wherever you might be. Enjoy the festive season, have fun, but never drink and drive: always #chooseright. The N332 Education project came about last January when traffic cops in Torrevieja set up a Facebook Page of that name. It was aimed at passing on information regarding traffic laws, general laws and other useful information to
English-speaking expats in the Torrevieja and Orihuela Costa region of the Costa Blanca, through which the scenic N332 Coast Road runs. The police group hoped to get a couple of hundred “likes” from local people, especially drivers. But already, the page has more than 8,000 “likes” from all over Spain, and in the Canaries. And a new website, n332. es, in which articles that have appeared on the Facebook Page, can be indexed for permanent and easy reference. Look, read … and pay heed!
Gloria Gaynor for Adeje
Banned German still at large on the island GERMAN national Lutz Bachmann, who has been declared persona non grata by the Cabildo, is still in Tenerife.
He is living in San Miguel de Abona after abandoning his rented Los Menores apartment from which, during the summer, he maintained contact with the racist and anti-refugee group PEGIDA. He founded the organisation two years ago in Dresde, Germany, to where he travels back frequently. Bachmann has already served prison sentences in Germany, and was fined
for not paying his ex-wife’s maintenance. When asked about his Cabildo ban, he told a newspaper: “Now is not the right time to talk”, because he wanted to keep his anonymity on the island. However, he enjoys regular strolls around the San Miguel coast and maintains his presence on social media. Meanwhile, he has shared
information on Facebook about a large demonstration against refugees, to be held in Dresde on Sunday. It is being run by the PEGIDA movement, which is devoted to combat what is perceived as the threat of Islam and multi-culturalism. Bachmann also shared a video of 400 Maghrebs entering the Spanish enclave Ceuta illegally by jumping a fence around the boarder. He has shown videos, too, featuring footage of illegal immigrants or refugees attacking European citizens, maintaining the breeding ground that has revived xenophobia in Germany and parts of Europe.
SHE never could say goodbye, and American disco queen Gloria Gaynor will be saying hello to Tenerife when she appears in Adeje on 26th May 2017. The New Jersey born singer, now 67, will be the latest in the Legends Live programme, which has already featured UB40 and
Jethro Tull. Gloria, riding high on the Seventies’ disco boom, had her biggest hits with I Will Survive and Never Can Say Goodbye. And she still dipping into her huge range of soul-inspired ballads on stage. Get your tickets (from 49 euros upwards) via www.legendslive.es or www. entrees.es

Tourists now going overboard for 2017
THE tourism sector in Spain, including the Canary and Balearic Islands, hit the 68-million mark from June to August, and it is already preparing for a record number of arrivals next summer.
For the sixth consecutive year, it is being boosted by ongoing security fears in other Mediterranean destinations, such as Tunisia, Egypt and Turkey. Employment agencies are expecting a 13% increase
in temporary hires over the summer months, while car sales have soared 38%, year-on-year, as rental firms buy new fleets of vehicles in anticipation of the demand. The predicted boom follows this year’s record tourist numbers between January and April of 18.1 million, up 13% on the same 2015 period. “The outlook is spectacular,” says Ricard Santomà, dean of the Tourism faculty at Barcelona’s Universidad Ramón Llull. “Failing a catastrophe or some major security issue, we’ll beat last year’s record easily.
Kids’ perfect presents
ADEJE Council and the Senior Citizen Association have campaigned jointly to make sure that no local child is left without a present from the Three Kings at Reyes, on 6th January. A charity event is being held on 28th December, at 6pm, in Adeje Cultural Centre’s Children’s Theatre. To ensure they collect toys galore, visitors must donate a new toy to gain access. With the giving season in full swing, Santa Cruz is also preparing for Reyes, the Spanish equivalent
of Christmas Day, with a collection of toys for disadvantaged kids that would make Santa´s eyes bulge. The annual Mirame TV charity evening takes place next Friday (23rd Dec) from 5-9 pm at the Plaza del Principe, and the collection gets bigger each year. A whopping 60,000 gifts were gathered and distributed this year. It involves a huge operation, and organisers are always helped by the Red Cross and local firemen.
Santomà adds that many airlines have lowered ticket prices to reflect the fall in oil prices. And Rafael Gallego, President of Spain’s CEAV confederation of travel agents, backed him up, saying: “Countries such as Egypt and Turkey still face enormous problems. “Spain will receive many of the tourists who could have travelled to those countries, which compete with us as sun-and-beach destinations. “As a result, there are areas in the Balearics where it is already impossible to find accommodation this summer.”
Mr Gallego also expects to see an increase of up to 15% in the number of Spaniards taking a holiday at home. Last year, some 68 million tourists visited Spain. If the current monthly increases for this year continue, the country will easily reach 70 million for this year. But Santomà is concerned that the country could be reaching saturation point: “This is an aspect that Spain has not looked at carefully enough,” he said. “ It’s one of the first things we teach on our course: you have to know what the load capacity is. But the government and the sector
have never sat down together to discuss this seriously, not even in cities like Barcelona, which already receives 10 million people.” The tourism sector has driven Spain’s economy throughout the crisis, but many hotels have had to lower their prices to continue attracting visitors during the worst years of the recession. Prices in three and four-star hotels this summer will be the same as when the crisis began in 2008. But the average daily cost of a five-star hotel has risen, from 168 euros eight years ago to 171 euros.
Arona police are in total disarray ARONA’S Local Police headquarters, located in a back street of the town, is just one good example of administrative neglect. The list includes the local Council after many years of municipal mismanagement, and the socialists, who, in a year-and-a-half of administration, have been unable to sort anything out. Without a General Management Plan and with insufficient technicians in the workforce, Mayor José Julián Mena and his Council hardly have any room to make this long-standing project a reality. That project is to move the old, Third World country Local Police headquarters
to modern, better-located premises. In previous council mandates, locations considered were Tenbel tower and the old Renault dealership in Guaza. But now the General Management Plan has been cancelled, moving the headquarters seems a long way off. Local police chief Carolina Reverón said that was the reason for the recent “facelift” with a coat of paint on the old building, which was inaugurated as the Local Police headquarters in 1988 by then Mayor, Manuel Barios. The Local Police union not only focuses on the station’s poor conditions, and who directs it, but also highlights that its members do not receive salary supplements (night shift, extra hours, etc)
as do other agents in the municipality. And even the Mayor and Reverón agree with the union, saying: “They are right!” Arona’s Local Police force is so poor that it cannot provide enough uniforms for the officers. Reverón had to rush an order on 18th November for 120 trousers and 120 polo shirts. And measurements were also taken to purchase bulletproof vests, another unfulfilled promise by the current municipal government. Oh, and don’t forget the new police cars, of which just five of the 14 promised have been delivered. But even these hadn’t passed the necessary ITV test and are, therefore, still not operative.

Doctor Who is back on island IF you could go anywhere in the universe, where would it be? For time -travelling hero Doctor Who, it has to be Tenerife.
The Time Lord’s Tardis has landed here again for filming of the new series, which will air next Spring. Two years ago Peter Capaldi, still getting used to his new role of Doctor Who, popped up in Garachico, Vilaflor, and, of course, Teide National Park. Teide’s alien-like setting is a popular location for film and television productions. And according to photos posted on Instagram by director Daniel Nettheim, it will be playing at least a small part in the Doctor’s new adventures. The Canary Islands seem to lure the Tardis
in because Lanzarote has been used as a location for previous Doctor Who actors Colin Baker and Matt Smith. And Gran Canaria is currently
being used for filming a new Uma Thurman movie. But Tenerife wins the main camera focus for small and large screens. The BBC drama Silent
Candelaria rings in the New Year
CANDELARIA is set to have a starring role on national Spanish television (TVE), when it rings in the New Year from the Basilica at midnight on the Feliz 2017 programme. Candelaria Town Hall, through its Festivities Commission, has set
up a large stage on the Plaza de la Patrona de Canarias and has organised a huge dance, with music provided by Moisés González and his band Son Iyá; singer José Manuel Ramos and the Maracaibo and Columbia orchestras. The entire event,
which is expected to draw large crowds, begins at 10.30pm outside the church and goes on into the small hours. Spanish TV, along with national radio will be broadcasting from the Plaza throughout the night.
Witness was filming here a few weeks ago, and the latest Bourne movie brought US star Matt Damon over for some intensive recording in September last year.
So if you hear a wheezing sound, keep an eye out for the Tardis landing near you … and don´t be surprised to see daleks or cybermen on a beach

Spain wins both ways THE British referendum and US election results have turned up double trumps for Spain, says the country’s Economy Minister. Luis de Guindos believes that the controversial, Brexit-winning votes and the election of Donald Trump as US President act as a “very big advantage”. He claims that for the first time since Franco, the political microscope has moved away from Spain. “We a very big advantage now,” said de Guindos. “We are off the radar screen in terms of political uncertainty, which means we can continue to strengthen our economic recovery without the worry of political turmoil.” While Spain’s unemployment is still at around 19%, the minister forecast a 3.2% economic growth for this year, which is twice the rate at which the Eurozone is expanding. De Guindos also pointed to a growing property market and an “increasingly-lively” start-up scene, especially in Madrid and Barcelona.

Want to confess?
Don’t worry be appy IF you’re not a church-goer but really need to find a priest to hear your confession, hope is at hand in the form of a new app.
Father Ricardo Latorre, who created the app, hopes the service will also become available to Spanishspeaking nations in Latin America next year. “It has generated a great deal of interest and there are many
priests from these countries that ask to join,” he said. “But these things take time, and it is impossible to do it faster.”
Confesor GO, which has just been launched, will detect your location and reveal where the nearest priests are, willing and able to perform the holy Sacrament of Penance. The app will provide information about the priest, including his name, age and when he was ordained, alongside a list of the Ten Commandments… just in case you’ve gone completely over the top! “The priest may be in a confessional in a church, some place down the street or at a park in your city,” reads the description of the app, available on the iTunes store.
Catholicism remains embedded in Spain’s culture, but regular church attendance there has decreased steadily. In a new survey published by the Sociological Research Centre, 59.3% of natives admit they “almost never” attend Mass. But what if they want make that confession to a priest, without giving the game away to one who knows them?
Safer cycling is a sign of the times By Colin Kirby
PA C I F I C AT I O N ! What a calming word, and perfect for the new integration of cycle lanes around the busy junctions of Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio, and El Fraile.
The measures were announced by Arona Council in June, and, as promised, they have been added before the end of the year. The new markings still caught a few people by surprise, but the new, blue, parking zones for bicycles have left everyone baffled. Zone 30 is the collective name for the works, which include advance warnings of frequent cyclists on roundabouts at the entry to El Fraile, Las Galletas, and Guaza, followed by 1.5m-width central cycling lanes at key points. These areas are popular
with sports cyclists, and the Council hopes to encourage other leisure riders to enjoy the roads as well. The key is to balance it all so that pedestrians, car drivers and cyclists feel safe. And the new, large warning notices are in English as well as Spanish. A couple of elderly Las
Galletas expats contacted Canarian Weekly, concerned that the new cycle parking places may be at the expense of some disabled parking. But last week, on the two public holidays (Tuesday and Thursday), there were disabled parking spots at regular intervals on the end of general bays through
most of the main streets, which weren’t all full. The new cycle bays are much bigger, with no nearby signs or instructions for their use, and there wasn’t a cycle in any of them. But the new lay-outs are recent additions. The El Fraile, Las Galletas, and Costa del Silencio areas,
home to 40% of the Arona population, generate 57,000 daily journeys, so it is easy to see the importance of keeping the traffic flowing freely and safely. This project has cost 90,517.15 euros, with funding split between the European Commission 75%, the Cabildo and Arona Council making up the rest with 12.5% each. Back to those blue cycling areas. They could be a good draw for the three towns because lots of cycle clubs enjoy the roads around that part of Arona. And big tour groups sweep through frequently, keen on a food-and-drink stop as they loosen their lycra. Several cyclists from San Miguel’s Club Activo Cycling were horrified at the thought of leaving their pride and joys abandoned at the roadside. A few sturdy posts to chain them to would encourage them to linger a while. Happy cycling folks.

Who took a python to the Xmas Party? TONIGHT, it’s that one night of the year where morals and professional etiquette goes out of the window … yes, it’s the office Christmas Party! Now, we’ve had some great parties over the years, and I’m sure tonight won’t be any different. But there’s also been some, shall we say, interesting stories and situations, and, of course, what happens at the Christmas Party, stays at the Christmas Party. At least, until now! According to experts, company events are for getting to know co-workers better and having fun, but employees should keep their behaviour in check, because, with any social interaction with your boss and colleagues, it’s important to display professionalism, even outside of office walls … really? I’ve looked up the best stories to come out of a Christmas Party and I’ve found a poll revealing some of the most outrageous and out-of-hand behaviours that workers have seen at their company parties. 1. An employee threw his coworker in a pool. 2. A person rode naked on a circus Big Wheel. 3. Someone drove a golf cart to a river, jumping out before it went into the water. 4. An employee went through everyone’s desk while the company was partying. 5. An employee dressed up as a wrestler. 6. All the bosses wore nothing but boxer shorts. 7. Someone sported all red at a black-and-white party. 8. One co-worker brought all his relatives to the office BBQ. 9. An employee brought a
cocker spaniel to a work event - and the dog relieved himself by the refreshments. 10. Someone came to the party, accompanied by his pet python. 11. One co-worker came to a Christmas party with a bag of Tupperware so she could pack up all the left-overs. 12. A person left an event wearing someone else’s clothes. 13. Someone took home glasses that did not belong to him. 14. An employee was caught loading his car with food from the firm’s holiday party. 15. An employee shattered a glass table. 16. Two co-workers decided it was the perfect time to hash out their differences, with an all-out fist-fight. 17. An employee broke his leg climbing a wall. 18. Someone fell out of a tree and landed hard on a cobblestone floor. 19.Co-workers were competing on the dance floor to see who could do the best moves. It turned into a fight and they were both sacked for inappropriate behaviour. 20. A couple got engaged. I reckon I can spot 10 that relate to our staff, past and present. See if you can work out which ones, and, if you message me, I might even tell you who they were! In the meantime, enjoy yourselves … but pay heed to our front page: drive soberly and carefully!

I’m sure I played there… didn’t I? DOES your memory play tricks on you, or is it spot-on? A study has found that almost half of us are prone to remembering things that never happened.
Warwick University researchers showed that if people are told, repeatedly, to imagine a fictional event in their lives, around 50% accepted that it did. In fact, research has found that almost half of us are prone to remembering things that never happened. It has also raised further doubts about the credibility of eyewitness statements used in court, and sheds light on how people develop false beliefs. As part of the study, researchers looked at a number of memory implantation studies, in which people were provided with false memories as their own. More than 400 people, taking part in the eight studies, were asked to imagine a range of false events, including taking hot-air balloon rides, playing pranks on a teacher, or creating havoc at a family wedding.
A meta-analysis of the results revealed that around 50% of people believed, to some extent, they had actually experienced these “implanted” events. In the course of the studies, more than 400 people were asked to imagine a range of false events, including taking hot-air balloon rides, playing pranks on a teacher, or creating havoc at a family wedding. Researchers looked at eight studies in which “memory implantation” was carried out in 423 study participants. They were asked to remember a range of scenarios and, repeatedly, recall the event. Using this process, the researchers hoped to “implant” false memories. A review of these studies showed that more than half of participants could recall the false memory, almost 11% of whom with a full memory, embellished with their own details. The authors say their findings reinforce the importance of teaching people how changeable memory is. Some 30% appeared to “remember” the event,
accepting the suggested happening and embellishing it with their own details … even describing images of what it was like. And another 23% showed signs of accepting the implanted memory as their own to some degree, believing it really happened. Dr Kimberley Wade, a University of Warwick psychologist, said: “We know that many factors affect the creation of false beliefs and memories, such as asking a person to imagine a fake event repeatedly, or to view photos to ‘jog’ their memory. “But we don’t fully understand how all these factors interact. Large-scale studies like our mega-analysis move us a little bit closer. “The finding that a large portion of people are prone to developing false beliefs is important. We know from other research that distorted beliefs can influence people’s behaviours, intentions and attitudes.’” The authors, writing in a paper in the journal Memory, conclude: “Our results reinforce how important is it to continue educating people about the malleability of memory.”
Why Wifi’s wrecking future for expat Rosi
A BRITISH woman is anxious to have Wifi removed from her town because exposure to mobile phone and computer signals threatens to ruin her life. Granada expat Rosi Gladwell has launched a campaign in her Polopus village to minimise the risks of electro-magnetic radiation exposure. Rosi, who suffers extreme migraines and breathing problems, was diagnosed with electro-magnetic sensitivity four years ago. She was forced to rid her property of mobile phones and computers, and has had to alter her entire life to avoid electro-magnetic signals after being diagnosed with
the condition. But, following a meeting with Polopus Mayor Matias Gonzalez Braos, the 67-yearold from Devon is confident that measures will be introduced to educate others about the condition. “I am immensely impressed with our local mayor, and how seriously he is taking this,” she said.
“When talking about Wifi technology dangers, he came up with the idea of limiting the hours of access in the village by putting timerswitches on the routers in the school, Town Hall and doctor’s surgery. “This means that we are afforded protection from the emissions, but we’re not cut off from communication.” But Rosi can’t stay in many hotels or eat in busy restaurants because Wifi exposure leaves her so ill. “It is amazing how badly informed people are,” she said. “I truly feel that the public at large will, eventually, also be subject to the detrimental side-effects.”

Butterflies head for Santiago del Teide
By Colin Kirby
THE Mariposario butterfly house in Icod de Los Vinos, open and shut more often than a butterfly’s wings, is giving up its legal and political fight against planning laws and closing for good.
But like a chrysalis, it will re-emerge in a new home at Santiago del Teide. Since the doors first opened 13 years ago, arguments have ebbed and flowed over whether the building conformed to the original plans, or if the frontage jutted out too far, on to public land. Owner Jose Antonio Plaza has argued his case continually to keep the 800 butterflies in their special, humid and heated, environment. But the local council always seemed to bring new hurdles to overcome, and visitors to the nearby Drago tree could
never be sure if they could add the Mariposario to their outing. For the last 12 months or so, police have kept a squad car outside in a bizarre standoff. When I called in earlier this year, it was open but the receptionist said she couldn’t charge me an entry fee as the police were parked outside. Free trips around the large, open-plan area of water and shrubs might be good for tourists, but not so good for a business. Santiago del Teide has thrown a lifeline to the exotic species and their breeding centre. And Mayor Emilio Navarro has announced that the Mariposario will be housed in the Casa del Marques, just north of the town hall and church plaza. The grounds already house the recently refurbished Casona del Patio hotel and restaurant. The new addition will add a further boost to tourism in the municipality, which is already a magnet for hikers - and the gateway to Masca barranco.

Micro-credits for boosting female firms
THE Cabildo has launched a line of interest-free micro-credits for female entrepreneurs, of between 600-2,500 euros, to boost or strengthen their business projects. Applicants must be selfemployed, resident in Tenerife with a viable business plan, and have last year’s tax return. The micro-credits will enable entrepreneurs to finance machinery, furniture, computer equipment or merchandise. Deadline for applying is next Friday (23rd Dec), and for more information, contact www.fifedetfe.es The repayment plan for a micro-credit starts with monthly instalments of 100 euros. Applicants, who must prove their company is viable, will have to provide a business plan, which will be studied and evaluated by the Cabildo. When the credits are awarded, those business plans which are innovative, or create more employment, will be highlighted. But the Cabildo stresses that this is not a requirement for funding.
Firefighters’ 2017 calendar ADEJE’S volunteer Firefighter Association, in Fañabé, has published a solidarity calendar, which will also benefit the Association of San Juan. The calendars, costing six euros, include photographs of the Bombaderos performing charitable duties, interacting, specifically, with the San Juan Association. The calendar is already on sale at the Firefighters’ headquarters, in the Protección Civil building, Fañabe, at the San Juan de Adeje Association, C/Manuel Bello Ramos Street. Numbers are limited and all proceeds go towards the San Juan Association and Adeje Volunteer Firefighter Association, which intends to buy a new vehicle to complement its fleet.

Pink sunshine, on the annual Walk For Life
By Colin Kirby
FINDING room to dance was a challenge, but many of the 3,420 people on Sunday’s Walk For Life found room to sway those hips as the pink wave of hope swept along the Golden Mile, from Los Cristianos into Las Americas.
A special bond of friendship always unites the walkers as they come to honour lost loved ones and raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. It is also a celebration of life, and a rallying call across all communities and languages in Tenerife … people power as a force for good. Pink, the official breastcancer awareness colour, dominated the faces and costumes at the gathering point near CC Oasis. Almas de Goma rocked the stage, balloon towers bobbed in the breeze, and men and women sprouted pink wings. There are always subtle changes to the Walk, and a new, shorter route and a running race tweaked this year’s format. Twelve minutes was the winning time for the 3,500m course, though the majority were gearing up for a more leisurely pace.
Lady bikers were putting finishing touches to roaring steeds that would lap us and reappear at key points along the route, and a few fourlegged friends were given a late brush-up. Another favourite face, piper Paul Halkyard, had a recent a hip operation, but that couldn’t keep him away. Settled in his wheelchair, he was able to pipe off the surge of walkers. Drum bands supplied the rhythm, and feet flowed by morning shoppers as we funnelled past cheering shops and cafes. Moving past Veronicas with the beach opening up alongside, it was possible to look right down the line and struggle to see where the procession ended. Many of the walkers dedicated the walk to specific family and friends, but others just wanted to show their support for all the good work that Walk For Life Tenerife has undertaken in the last 13 years. Adeje’s Pink Room, where people can go for support and advice, is just one of the practical steps they have taken. And funding research into beating cancer is also a big consideration. Local companies had again rallied to the cause with sponsorship and supplies of water, soft drinks and cookies to fuel the crowd. Cutting up through a feeder road , we came out opposite
the Magma as the pink trail wound itself around the palm trees and grass verges. Pink trumped green as the public buses and other traffic made way for the procession to work its way across the road and up the ramp to the rear of the centre. As the bulk of walkers crossed the line, a flock of pink-andwhite balloons were released into the sky. The weather had been good to us again, with clear skies and hot sun, but some of the more wrappedup walkers must have felt like turkeys in the oven. Stalls full of the Canary Islands’ finest bananas, along with health drinks and cold water, were well-received as the emotions flooded forth. As Joes Band delivered more live music, and speeches were made, the totting-up of all the money donated on and before the walk took place. The grand total of 15,600 euros was a tremendous achievement, and further 400 euros have since been collected, taking the overall sum so far to 16,000 euros. So take a bow all those who made it possible. From sponsors who donated time and services, CD Tenerife supporters Armada Sur with 1,665 euros, to the loose change spectators dropped in the collecting buckets, it will make a difference. See you all next year. Photos: Sir Olf Golfer

Journey into space, by solar power only THE Solar Stratos, a mind-blowing plane destined to become the first solarpowered craft to break through the stratosphere, has been unveiled officially.
It has already been flown around the globe, successfully, is set to blast off into space in 2018 - and is capable of flying 25,000 metres above the Earth! While past trips to the stratosphere have required large quantities of energy or helium, the SolarStratos uses solar power for “the equivalent, environmental footprint of an electric car”. Raphael Domjan, who created the plane and flew it, said after its official introduction in Payerne, Switzerland: “Our goal is to demonstrate that current technology offers us the possibility to achieve above and beyond what fossil fuels offer. “Electric and solar vehicles are among the major challenges of the 21st century, and our aircraft can fly at an altitude of 25,000m, which opens the door to the possibility of electric
and solar commercial aviation, close to space.” Interested parties can pledge 55,000 euros (£46,308) to be guaranteed, eventually, a high-altitude flight. SolarStraos officials last month revealed plans for a five-hour mission to space and back, during which the plane and pilot will be subjected to frigid temperatures and extremely low pressures. The plane is just 28ft (8.5m) long and runs on a 32kw electric engine and 20 kWh lithium-ion
battery, charged by the craft’s 72sq/ft (22sq/m) solar cells, which cover each wing. The craft, which has a 24.8m wingspan, was built by PC-Aero. It can seat two people and is capable of flying for more than 24 hours at a time. The company insists SolarStratos is the first commercial, twoseater solar plane, and will be the first solar craft to breach the stratosphere. The mission comes just months after Solar
Please Sir, could you pop into the station? POLICE are being forced to “invite” suspects to turn up voluntarily at police stations, because they simply cannot afford to arrest them! A lack of officers and cells has contributed to the situation in the Wiltshire force, which has spent £700,000 probing child abuse claims against the late Sir Edward Heath. Inspector Pete Sparrow said: “With our numbers we we just can’t afford to arrest everyone. It’s not that you can’t find people, interview them or investigate offences; it’s whether it’s appropriate
to arrest somebody.” The inspector said offenders, such as shoplifters, might be interviewed on the spot after being caught, while others might be contacted and come to a police station “under an invite”. He added that the force’s custody suites were rarely full because of a change in law that means police cannot arrest a suspect if a voluntary interview is feasible. However, rank-and-file police in the county say there is a lack of cells, which makes officers
think twice before arresting a drunk or troublemaker at night. That’s because taking them into custody miles away would eat into their off-duty hours. Mike White, chairman of the Wiltshire Police Federation, admitted: “The distance they have to travel to custody does impact on their decisions.” Wiltshire has lost almost 200 full-time officers since 2010, and, since the large police station in Salisbury was shut down, police have been based in council offices with no cells.
Impulse II, piloted by Switzerland adventurer Andre Borschberg and Domjan (for the final leg, between Egypt and the United Arab Emirates), made the first-ever, round-theworld flight powered by solar energy. And before this, Domjan led the first trip
around the world in a solar-power boat, which was completed in May 2012. This achievement demonstrated that travel with renewable energy would be possible, and Domjan says it is now necessary to “go even further and overtake what has been achieved with fossil fuels”. In the first mission, the plane is expected to take two hours to ascend to space, 15 minutes to “stay up with the stars”, and three hours to descend. From up so high, passengers will be able to see the curvature of the Earth and witness the stars during the daytime. “Beyond this adventure,” says Domjan, “our project is to open a door on a commercial electrical or solar
aviation on the edge of space, with the aim of achieving unique travel with private passengers or scientists.” The plane will not be pressurised because of weight restrictions, and the pilot will have to wear an astronaut’s pressurised suit, in another solar-energy first. During the journey, both the plane and pilot will experience temperatures as cold as -70 degrees C, along with pressures around 5% of those felt on Earth. According to the SolarStratos team, the mission will be a challenge to both human and technological capabilities, and could pave the way for renewable energy travel. “Now we are going to open the way for manned solar and electric aviation on the edge of space,” say the team.

San Miguel offers a twinkling reminder THEY say a little imagination can go a long way … and this is the case in the high street in San Miguel,
where residents don’t have to wait for the twinkling night lights to fire those festive feelings. The Council has again delivered a grand selection of roadside displays, with the colours and themes of Christmas. Maybe red heralds serenading a giant candle will light up a carol in your head, or perhaps that silver pipe in a cascade of blue flowers will get you counting down the days. Some of the trees
are sporting red-andwhite-card baubles, although they have to try extra hard to compete with the burst of orange flowers flowing over the wall. San Miguel doesn’t have the biggest of town centres, but the
Council does its best to cram in as much festive variety as possible. It is wine country, so it’s only natural to dress up an old barrel cart with fir cones and giant candles, together with liberal sprinklings of red and silver. It’s not just random, either, because tradition demands a commanding centrepiece: in this case the Christmas tree, by the steps up to the next street. It is big and bold, making it a perfect meeting point for carol singers. Towards the top end of the main street, the silver-and-red theme jumps out again, this time wrapped around a palm tree in a swirl. New Year is also part of the festive calendar, and a few yards down, a lower side-street to the tourism office brings a timely reminder of 2017’s arrival. However, all this does not distract from the usual attractions of the Church Plaza, and the Mirador restaurant, with its spectacular views down to the coast. San Miguel is a halfhour bus ride up above Los Cristianos on the 416 Titsa bus for Granadilla, or about half that time by car. It’s a pleasing journey through Cabo Blanco and Valle San Lorenzo, especially the rise up to the viewpoint of La Centinela.
Flood repairs go through the roof THE devastating damage caused by last week’s flash floods on the Costa del Sol amounts to much more than the estimated 50 million euros.
This preliminary figure covers just the coastal towns, such as Estepona, Manilva and Casares. But the final cost of renovating the Malaga province is expected to be sky-high. Council experts made the estimate after their first visits to those areas wrecked by the raging waters, which claimed two lives and left hundreds homeless. But they have not yet revealed their findings for the worst-hit areas, such as Cartama and Coin. Some 27m euros alone is needed to repair Estepona, where a 26-year-old prostitute drowned after being trapped in the basement of a sex club. And Marbella Town Hall says the damage there will add up to more than 28m euros. This follows initial inspections of public roads, infrastructure
and equipment by council workers, which were wrecked by the freak weather. It will take 2.5m to repair Marbella’s Paseo Maritimo and almost 3m to repair school and cultural buildings, including the roof of the Teatro Ciudad de Marbella. There has been nearly 10m euros of damage in San Pedro and 2½m in Nueva Andalucia, with as much or more being spent in Manilva, and 500,000 euros in Casares. Damage costing 4m euros wrecked Malaga’s city streets, and work has begun on improving the drainage system, following criticism over its poor quality by some residents. Little good emerged from the heartbreaking weekend, except that untold numbers came to the aid of neighbours, both the human and furry kind, who were victims. It was wonderful for residents to see and hear of people, many expats, spending their spare time contributing to the clean-up operation, and organising food collections and rescuing animals from flooded sanctuaries.
Still more women than men jobless THE divide between female and male unemployment continues to increase here in the South, with more women than men still out of work. By gender, the jobless rate had an eight-point difference at the beginning of the year, which has grown throughout 2016 to 10 points, against women Latest information
from the Canarian Employment Office (Obecan) is that 55% of those registered in unemployment offices are women and 45% men. It means that of the 20.293 registered in the nine unemployment offices throughout the South, from Fasina to Santiago del Teide, 11,167 are female and 9,126 male - a 2,041 difference.

Barber dogged by his ban on women
MEN and dogs are more than welcome at a barber’s shop in Mallorca. But there is no room for women - not yet, anyway!
Dutch hairdresser Bob van den Hoek, who has lived in Spain for more than a decade, runs the Island’s Syndicate Barbers, catering for men exclusively. His poster made headlines in September, prompting outrage from various sectors, including the Balearic Women’s Institute, who demanded remove it. Van den Hoek relented for a few days, before pasting the poster back up, posing proudly for photos beside it and saying it would remain there until someone found a law forbidding the ban explicitly. He has been adamant that the “his house, his rules” saying applies. And he refuses to let woman and children
“spoil the ambiance” for his customers, who are regaled by jazz music and drinks while they have their hair cut. Now, though, it appears that someone has uncovered a regulation, the General Law on Advertising. It prohibits advertising that “violates the dignity, values or rights enshrined in the constitution” - a broad scope which will, surely, foster vigorous legal debate. The government also argues that Bob the Barber is in breach of protection measures against Gender Violence by promoting stereotypes. But Van den Hoek claims that his customers haven’t complained, and that most people see the funny side. He argues that there are areas reserved for women, exclusively, such as saunas, and all he wants to do is create an environment that suits him and his clientèle
GNOMES coloured blue, who were attacked repeatedly on a roundabout at Totnes, Exeter, have finally been removed after a five-year row. The 3ft ornaments were installed on the Coronation Road junction in 2011 in an attempt to brighten up a rather dull area. But the ugly, Snow White-themed gnomes soon became hated by the townsfolk. Admittedly, some saw them as a “bit of fun” and would defend them earnestly, leading to rows. But most people,

understandably, felt they were tacky, and accused the gnomes of turning the town into a “West Country Disneyland”. The poor gnomes have been attacked with rocks, picked up and hurled to the ground … and, it seems, kidnapped! Four of them disappeared completely, never to be seen again. “They were badly beaten up and attacked by people who’d probably had a bit to
drink, and they ended up in a bit of a sorry state,” said Vernon Gaye, head of China Blue, the ceramics’ company which made them. “The idea had always been that they would fade into the background as the plants grew, and that people would be able to simply catch a glimpse of them as they drove by, and wonder what they had just seen.” He added: “But they
have continued to get beaten up and some, literally, had rocks bashed at them.” Diana Cusack from Totnes Gardens, which looks after the roundabout planting, said: “The gnomes were being hammered to death by people who would go there on a Saturday night, just to bash them. “They were not left in a gnome-like state, and they had lost their blueness.”

Hard Rock Hotel makes its Grand entrance to Tenerife FOLLOWING much anticipation, last Saturday saw the Grand Opening Party of Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife as it launched in the Canary Islands officially. Bringing the spirit of the Eighties to the open-air stage, next to a stunning new freshwater lagoon, the glam party injected a dose of glitter, fluorescent colour and disco classics to the coastline in celebration of Europe’s second Hard Rock Hotel. A 10-second countdown at sunset marked the start of the party as familiar faces from Hard Rock International and Palladium Hotel Group, Hard Rock’s hotel partner in Tenerife, were introduced to the stage for the legendary “guitar smash”. Following tradition with the launch of all Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos around the world, key figures in the development of the property, including Abel Matutes Juan, President of Grupo Empresas Matutes, his son Abel Matutes Prats, CEO of Palladium Hotel Group, Jon Lucas, EVP Hotel & Casino Operations at Hard Rock International, Alberto Bernabé and Carlos Alonso from Tenerife Cabildo, and Ermitas Moreira, from Adeje Council, smashed a guitar on stage to pay homage to the authentic rock rebels behind the Hard Rock brand. Guests came from all over the island and the world to party at the Canary Islands’ newest entertainment venue, including well-known Spanish actress and fashion icon Paula Echevarria. Party-goers got into the spirit with mullets, shoulderpads and big hair-styles to reflect the Eighties’ era, while others came dressed up as their favourite Eighties icons, including Madonna, Boy George and Freddie Mercury. Children of the 80s’ DJ trio Dream Team Reload got the musical proceedings underway, warming up the crowd with dance-floor fillers and sing-a-long classics. African artist Rozalla made history at 7pm as the first artist to play the Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife stage, entertaining the audience with her distinct, soulful voice. For her finale, she got the crowd singing along and jumping around to her dance classic, “Everybody’s Free”. Next up, Freedom Williams, from American dance-pop and hip-hop group C+C Music Factory, kept the energy high with hits such as “Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody
Dance Now)” and “Things That Make You Go Hmmmm”. Italian trio Blackbox followed with more Eighties’ house-music vibes, and left the lagoon-side concert area rocking with their 1989 bestselling record “Ride on Time”. The kings of disco, Village People, completed the oneof-a-kind, Eighties style extravaganza with their scores of catchy classics.
The six-strong disco group, dressed in their distinctive costumes, entertained with their signature dance moves, taking it in turns to introduce themselves to the revellers before them. And popular tracks “Macho Man”, “In The Navy” and “Y.M.C.A.” all featured within their set. Dream Team Reload returned to the stage in between sets to keep the
crowds dancing to tunes from the Eighties and Nineties, accompanied by fluorescent, Lycra-clad go-go dancers, performing on the stage and on oversized Rubik’s cubes around the open-air concert area. These combined with world-class pyrotechnics, air jets, streamers, confetti and coloured lighting, alongside the premium Eighties’ musical line-up to create an explosive party atmosphere. The Grand Opening wrapped up at 11pm with a spectacular firework display, which lit up the southern Tenerife coastline of Playa Paraiso. The launch of “Children of the 80s” in Tenerife comes after two successful seasons at Hard Rock Hotel Ibiza. Now notorious for its fun-filled, blast-from-the-past vibes, reminiscent of a time when music defined everything, the Grand Opening Party marked not only the inauguration of the new five-star property, but also Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife’s energising event programme of live concerts, which will include a monthly “Children of the 80s” party. Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife comprises 624 rooms, including 260 suites, split
across two towers - Oasis and Nirvana - combining contemporary interiors and luxury gadgets, radiating style and energy. The Rock Royalty Level, on the 13th, 14th and 15th floors of the Nirvana Tower, houses rock-star-worthy suites, offering exclusive services such as a private concierge, a VIP check-in and a free, daily spa service. To complement the music offering and live concerts, guests can also enjoy three pools, access to the lagoon and a beach club, complete with Balinese beds, all just steps from the property. The hotel also boasts signature Hard Rock facilities, including a Rock Spa®, Body Rock® gym and world-famous Rock Shop®. For younger guests, three kids’ clubs keep them entertained, with Lullaby for those aged six months to three years; Hard Rock Roxity Kids Club™ for the four-to-11 group, hosting a wide range of music-based activities, games, workshops and competitions; and Teen Spirit for the 1117 sector, featuring a virtual gaming area: Xbox Kinect, PlayStation, tablets, billiards, and table-football, among other activities. Guests have a choice of six restaurants, with a selection of culinary delights from around the world, including traditional Spanish flavours at tapas restaurant Ali-Olé, modern Asian restaurant Narumi, and tantalising steakhouse Montauk. There is also Sessions; a breakfast and dinner buffet, serving mouth-watering dishes, sports bar 3rd Half, offering American and international dishes in front of multiple giant screens, and The Beach Club at Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife, located right on the edge of the lagoon. A further six bars offer opportunities for an aperitif, after-dinner drink, freshlybrewed coffee or a thirstquenching cocktail. And for some of the best views of the island, the rooftop sky lounge bar, The 16th, overlooks Tenerife’s most impressive scenery, from majestic Teide, Spain’s tallest mountain, to the lesser known Canary Island of La Gomera. Rooms at Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife start from 250 euros, based on two people sharing with breakfast. Guests at Hard Rock Hotel Tenerife have full access to all live events at no extra cost. www.hrhtenerife.com

Baby birds bring festive joy to a Brazilian family A BRAZILIAN family witnessed their own festive miracle when a bird built a nest in their Christmas tree, and the eggs hatched among the decorations.
To make the magical event even more special, the home-owner had decorated the tree with a bird theme, including bright owl ornaments and glittery nests. Two baby birds were born deep in the branches at the Sao Paulo home, amid the ornaments, garlands and lights. The mother bird built the nest and laid two small eggs; now, the family watch mum and her two youngsters
hop about among the branches. The mum is tame enough to be stroked, and she even sits on home-owner Braga’s hand. “It was a surprise to see the bird and her nest,” she said. “And it was such a pleasure to be with the mother of the baby birds. I was decorating the tree and she was making the nest. We set it up and they were born, and now they are getting ready to leave.” Her family keep the doors and windows open so mum and her babies can come and go as they please. “I was there from the beginning,” added Braga. “I saw her making the nest and I later saw the eggs. I didn’t know for sure
if they would hatch because the mother spent a lot of time outside the nest. “She would come and go from one moment to the next. One day we were watching television. The door was closed and she began to make a noise. We watched her with a baby in her mouth and we realised the babies were born.” Braga added that the appearance of the bird family helped drive home the message of Christmas. “The Christmas tree symbolises the gratitude for the birth of Jesus Christ, peace and the sense of life,” she said. “And that is reinforced with what happened here in our house. “We are all very happy.”
Reindeer Rudolph and his chums are starving
CLIMATE change has left reindeer near the North Pole getting thinner and thinner because they can hardly find enough food to keep them plump during the winter.
It means that Santa Claus and his elves will have their work cut out this Christmas, looking for fully-fit volunteers to hitch to the sleigh. Studies on global warming carried out on and around the Arctic island of Svalbard, just
1,300km from the North Pole, tend to focus on the effects on polar bears. But researchers from Norway, and Scotland’s James Hutton Institute, have studied reindeer this year. Their results have led to concern because, over the last 25 years, the average weight of wild reindeer on the island has fallen from 55kg to just 48kg. Ecologist Professor Steve Albon said that the usual snow often falls as rain now, which then freezes. That means the reindeer are unable to get at the plants which form
their diet. The problem worsens because plants flourish in the warmer summer, leading to more satisfied, lively females conceiving in the autumn. While there were just 800 wild reindeer in the herd studied in the Nineties, it has now grown to around 1,400, leaving even less food to go round in the winter. With temperatures in the Arctic rising faster than the average for the world and greenhouse gases in the atmosphere constantly increasing, the situation looks bleak for Rudolph and his friends.

A LONDON company is seeking an emoji translator in what is thought to be the first such job anywhere.
It will entail explaining crosscultural misunderstandings in the use of the mini pictures, and compiling a monthly trends’ report. Jurga Zilinskiene, who runs the agency Today Translations, said: “Emojis are a potential growth area because inconsistencies have developed in their use.” A UK linguist said last year that “emoji” was the country’s fastestgrowing language. The tiny pictures have been available on Japanese phones since the late Nineties, gaining worldwide popularity after 2011, when iPhones started appearing with emoji keyboards. They are now widely a v a i l a b l e on Android phones, but they differ from emoticons by being coded little pictures rather than

collections of punctuation points, like :) or :’( or ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ (for emoticon newbies, the latter is a shruggie). But like emoticons, emojis can be used to indicate tone or emotion in messages composed largely of text. Ms Zilinskiene needed someone to convert diaries into emojis for one of her clients, but could not find a specialist. She said s o f t w a r e translations could only go so far and that a human translator was needed, so the agency posted an online job advert. She speaks Lithua-
nian, Russian and English, as well as codes in the programming languages Python and C#. With more than 30 applications so far, Jurga is hoping to appoint somebody on a freelance basis by January 2017, the role leading to a full-time post, possibly. Translation jobs will be paid by the word/ emoji, w h i l e research into the changing t r e n d s in emoji usage will be paid on an hourly basis. Now that the symbols have gone global, though, some people use the smiley-faced poo for its cuteness, others to indicate something rubbish. So can emojis be considered a language? “No, absolutely not,” stressed Rob
Drummond, a senior lecturer in linguistics at Manchester Metropolitan University. “My test for a language is that you have to be able to translate a full sentence from one to another, with shared meanings - not necessarily fixed, but shared - and emoji meanings vary from person to person,” he added. “It’s an addition to language rather than a language itself,” Emojis have more depth than most w o r d s , and, like gestures or body language, can add meaning to the text they go alongside. And Dr Drummond said he could see a space for emoji specialists, similar to
people who go before a court to give an interpretation of what somebody might mean by a particular slang word. In fact, the legal world has had to take notice of emojis because lawyers have started bringing forward the text communications sent by people accused of crime as evidence. Jeremy Burge, who already has a full-time job in emojis as chief emoji officer for his website, Emojipedia, said the symbols were a way of inserting tone into messages. “They’re bringing back what we miss in text communication when we don’t have body language,” he added. “It’s a communication aid.” Of the page views the glossary receives a month (up to 16 million), many are from social media professionals, who are anxious not to make a mistake when posting on behalf of their companies.

Euro hurt by PM’s fall By Carol Schleisman of Currencies Direct
FOLLOWING Prime Minister Matteo Renzi’s defeat in the Italian Referendum, volatility on the currency markets was short-lived. But, as expected, there will be continued uncertainty within Europe and Italy.
Last Thursday, the European Central Bank announced it would be reducing the quantitative easing amount from 80bn euros to 60bn next April, which helped the single currency. However, the euro experienced its biggest one-day fall since Brexit against the pound and the dollar when the ECB announced it would extend the QE programme to the end of 2017 - or longer if necessary. But though this was an
early Christmas present for investors in the European stock markets, Mario Draghi, European Central Bank President, discouraged over-confidence in relation to the continued effects of Brexit, and Donald Trump’s election. October’s UK manufacturing figures were disappointing. Instead of the expected increase, a 0.9% drop
against September’s rise impacted adversely on sterling. With the ongoing saga of “can-she/can’t-she” trigger Article 50 before the end of next March, Theresa May says she will reveal the official plan for leaving the EU well in advance. On Tuesday, the Consumer Price Index is expected to rise to 1.1% and strengthen sterling.
A boost in Private sector jobs has given the pound a boost, and an 8% increase is predicted for the next quarter. On Wednesday, American economist Janet Yellen, who chairs the Federal Reserve System’s Board of Governors, is looking to raise the US interest rates, the forecast being an increase from 0.5% to 0.75%.
Spain’s out to snare UK’s big city banks SPAIN, striving to attract London-based banks looking to relocate after Britain leaves the European Union, has prepared a list of advantageous conditions, which could include income-tax incentives for non-residents.
Madrid has collated a task force, comprising members of the Bank of Spain, the CNMV securities watchdog and the Economy Ministry. Their mission is to attract financial institutions intending to move to a EU
member state after Brexit becomes effective. The CNMV said in a release: “We are working to activate a complete package of measures with the goal of attracting to Spain those UK-based financial institutions wishing to transfer part of their business to Spain as a result of Brexit.” So far, they have contacted several US and Japanese lenders. Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, Nomura and other investment banks have been weighing their options for months. They are preparing for the possibility of a “hard Brexit” that would deny British lenders easy access to the European single
market. But Madrid is not the only European city to flirt with the City’s bankers because Dublin, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Milan are all vying for their favours. Even Luxembourg, Bratislava and La Valeta, in Malta, have shown an interest in attracting City companies. In Spain, besides the tax incentives, relocating lenders would be offered more streamlined dealings with the CNMV. Despite reticence from the Treasury Ministry, Luis de Guindos, the Economy Minister, wants to offer foreign bank executives tax incentives, mirroring steps announced by France a few weeks ago. The French strategy
has already yielded results: HSBC said it would transfer to Paris some 1,000 employees, representing 20% of its London staff. And HSBC is prepared to move 20% of its London workforce to Paris because of its incentives. Sources at the Economy Ministry said: “The advantages of Spain are its infrastructure, attractive realestate conditions and recent regulatory changes to achieve a more agile CNMV, which is banking’s great concern.” “Besides that, there is a tax regime in line with other countries, to which a touch-up to income tax will be added to make it more attractive.”
The probability is high that this will happen, but all eyes will be on the markets when her speech begins. Expect market volatility and the pound, possibly, to lose gains made on Tuesday. Thursday will be a busy day for UK data. The scheduled Retails Sales figures are expected to decline after last month’s strong reading,
together with BOE MPC Official Bank Rate votes and the Monetary Policy Summary. The Bank of England will also be discussing the interest rate, but this is expected to remain the same. In my last column before Christmas, on behalf of all of us at Currencies Direct, I wish all Canarian Weekly readers health and happiness for the Festive Season. Toilet costs are flushed at top railway stations RAIL passengers will be able to spend a penny for nothing at two of London’s busiest stations, because the toilet charges have been scrapped - for now.
The 50p fee at Victoria and Charing Cross has been halted temporarily as a goodwill gesture to commuters, who have endured travel misery over the past few months because of strikes, and there are more to come. But the move will prove costly to Network Rail, whose 2015 figures showed that passengers spent £12.8m at its stations’ toilets over the past three years. The company made a profit of around £2.5m in 2014, with over £600,000 from London Victoria alone.
An NR spokesman said the charges were necessary to help maintain the toilets, prevent misuse such as vandalism and other anti-social behaviour, with all money raised reinvested into station facilities. And a Network Rail South East Route spokeswoman said doing away with the charge brought Victoria and Charing Cross in line with London Bridge and Cannon Street, which both provide free toilets. “It will take us some time to assess the impact of that policy with regard to cleaning and security, and the costs involved in keeping standards as high as our expectations,” she added. “However, we recognise that good customer service starts from the minute people walk into our buildings, and we want them to feel welcome.”

Mr Khan and Mosque manager Dave organise rival Muslim Days at the community centre. Mercedes have dominated the sport since the introduction of turbocharged hybrid engines in 2014, and this year was no exception as Rosberg battled it out with Hamilton for the most prestigious prize in motorsport. The duo’s rivalry once again boiled over, at times to the dismay of the Mercedes management team and after 20 races it all came down to the final five laps of the season. Hamilton recovered from a 43-point deficit at one stage, but mechanical issues returned to haunt him in Malaysia and he was forced to retire when his engine caught fire.

The ghost village of Little Auburn has been abandoned since the war. When a young man is found murdered during its grand reopening, DCI Barnaby and DS Winter must unravel a sinister web of lies from both past and present in order to catch the killer. It is the night before the reopening of Little Auburn, a derelict village left untouched since WW2, and a 1940s themed party is in full swing at The Cross Keys pub in Great Auburn. In the back room, three camps fight for Little Auburn’s future: idealists Finn Thornberry and Corina Craven champion their Eco-village dream, flashy developers Lucy and Blake Keswick present their Luxury Villas scheme, whilst Sylvia Lennard campaigns to preserve the village as a ‘living museum’. Local landowner Roderick Craven will announce his decision tomorrow. Later that night, Finn cycles back to his squat in Little Auburn but is blinded by the lights of a tank which drives straight at him….

Prince Harry In Africa ITV1, 21.00
This brand new film for ITV follows HRH Prince Harry on his return to Lesotho, in Africa, to continue the work of Sentebale, the charity he set up in the country a decade ago. Prince Harry first travelled to the little known kingdom of Lesotho 12-years ago, shadowed by broadcaster Tom Bradby. It was there, after seeing the country’s disadvantaged children, that the Prince decided to follow in the humanitarian footsteps of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, and set up Sentebale (translated as Forget Me Not), which provides care, support and education to youth affected by HIV and AIDS in Lesotho and Botswana. This film will see Prince Harry set off on an unforgettable adventure, where cameras will bear witness to his travels through the beautiful and challenging scenery to remote locations with his deeply personal aim of discovering the stories that he wants to tell to the world. The film will also capture the moment that Prince Harry is reunited with Mutsu, a local teenager who the Prince met on his first visit to Lesotho, and with whom he has since remained in regular contact, both knowing firsthand what is was like growing up without a parent. Prince Harry said: “The last 10 years that I’ve been coming here, every single time we turn up somewhere, they’re always singing, it’s never shake hands, it’s sing, dance, embarrass yourself. Everywhere I look I can hear songs from 10 years ago in my head. To me, that’s what this country is about, you just feel welcome everywhere you go.” Featuring footage of Prince Harry getting his hands dirty helping out with the charity’s work on the ground and interacting with the local children, the film will discover how the Prince has come to have such an understanding of their problems and how this led him to set up his own initiative, with the aim of supporting orphans and vulnerable children and helping them through education. Also, in an interview with Bradby, the Prince will reveal his motives for setting up the charity, his passion for the future of his work in Africa, and how he’s determined to use his unique position to do good.

Darcey Bussell: Looking For Margot
16th December - 22nd December 2016
T uesda y
BBC1, 22.45
Margot Fonteyn has inspired generations of ballerinas. She was beautiful, brilliant, talented and never put a foot wrong on stage. Her late flowering partnering with Rudolf Nureyev created the most dazzling ballet partnership in history. And yet behind the scenes, as Darcey Bussell discovers, Margot’s life was marked by tragedy and disappointment. She barely knew her father, and was dominated by her well-meaning yet fiercely ambitious mother. She couldn’t find love, and never had children. And when she finally did marry, to a man she loved from afar for many years, he turned out to be very different than she expected: a hero to his people, but not always to his wife. Darcey Bussell goes behind the scenes at the Royal Opera House and the Royal Ballet, and travels from London to New York and Panama looking for Margot. She finds how Margot lost out in love, got drawn into a failed foreign revolution, danced on for far too long, and died alone and in poverty, miles from home. Along the way Darcey speaks to many people who have not spoken out before about Margot. In the end, Darcey learns that by following her heart Margot did find a kind of happiness - even though it came at a high price.

Paul O’Grady’s Favourite Fairy Tales ITV1, 21.00
“It’s only when you get older that you wonder where did this come from, how did you invent a magic mirror, seven dwarves in a diamond mine, and why do children today, hundreds of years later, still find them fascinating?” Paul O’Grady travels to Germany and into the world of his fairy tale heroes – the Brothers Grimm. This is a world that inspired the children’s films we have all grown up with, but as Paul discovers, like with all forms of magic, there’s more to fairy tales than first meets the eye. On fairy tales, Paul says: “My first memory of a fairy tale is me dad taking me to the Essoldo (cinema) in Birkenhead to see Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. And we only got as far as the opening credits and the queen walking up the steps and the music to magic mirror on the wall, and I screamed the place down and I had to be taken out.” Paul explores the landscapes, picture-book castles and chocolatebox villages that inspired his favourite stories; from the land of the Seven Dwarfs to the castle where a Rapunzel is said to have been held. Paul says: “I’ve always found fairy tales intriguing - stories of cursed princesses, evil queens, charming princes, and above all, a happy ending. For years I’ve been playing those well-known characters on stage in panto, and children love them. So I became fascinated by the origins of the tales.” Amidst this fantasy world of wonder, magic and enchantment, there’s a real life narrative of how Paul’s own favourite stories - Cinderella, Little Red Riding hood, Snow White, Rapunzel and Sleeping Beauty were put together and how they have evolved over the centuries. This is a story of darkness as well as light that’s as fascinating as the fairy tales themselves.

W C choice Mary Berry’s Absolute Christmas Favourites BBC2, 19:00
In this two-part series, Mary Berry draws on her wealth of cookery know-how and shares a selection of her absolute favourite Christmas recipes. In this episode, Mary cooks five indulgent but easy classics. Mary starts with mulled wine and mini filo beef wellington canapes. Then it’s on to Christmas dinner itself, as Mary roasts a turkey crown served with all the trimmings - fail-safe sage and onion stuffing balls, a simple cranberry sauce and a winning recipe for brussels sprouts. For a final treat, Mary cooks her very special take on the traditional Christmas mince pie. As well as cooking her Christmas Day favourites, Mary tells stories from her past and visits some specialist artisans getting ready for a busy Christmas. First up, she samples a seasonal tipple at the Wiston Estate winery, before visiting Hampton Court to find out whether her Christmas in any way resembles the Christmases celebrated by the Tudors.

Who Do You Think You Are?
16th December - 22nd December 2016
T hursda y
BBC1, 20.00 Ricky Tomlinson is well known for playing the archetypal Scouser - and it turns out that his Liver-
pool roots run deep. Ricky discovers that he comes from generations of carters, who transported goods on Liverpool’s docks when the city was the British Empire’s busiest port. Ricky’s rage and sorrow build as he discovers how dangerous conditions were for his ancestors, eerily echoing his own fight for workers’ rights in the 1970s.

2016 - The Year That Changed the World. It has been dubbed the year of rebellion - a year when everything that was assumed to be the political and social norm was turned upside down. After Brexit and the shockwaves following the American election, it would be no exaggeration to describe 2016 as the year that changed the world. In this special programme, Tom Bradby explores the Brexit vote in Britain and how it revealed a deeply divided nation, uncertain of how best to proceed under the highly pressured umbrella of the European Union. In America, the election of Donald Trump signalled a rejection of the elite and for many the start of a ‘golden new age’ for the US. Tonight takes a look at what has happened over the last 12 months and whether the rebellions that occurred will set the tone for years to come in other countries across the globe.

Christmas fun!
Silencio’s generosity RESIDENTS and tourists in Costa del Silencio rallied around a poorly Greg Stetson recently to raise funds for his family.
The Albatros Bar, in conjunction with Arona’s Las Galletas, Costa del Silencio Lions Club, held two fund-raisers: a Race Night which brought in 342 euros, and a show staged by Pat ‘Scottie’ Wilson and Gary Jay
last Sunday, at which a total of 323 euros was collected, making 665 euros in all. And Lions Club members had already agreed, unanimously, to round up whatever the sum raised to 1,000 euros, thus donating 335 euros to the benefit fund. Thank you all for your kind generosity, which is very much appreciated by the family. And thanks also to the entertainers, who gave up their time for a fellow artiste.
Lions Club lays on festive fun for kids
Our Christmas afternoon for you event is tomorrow and your beloved (17th) from 3-7pm dogs. in the Plaza in Father Christmas has promised to make an Las Galletas. It appearance, and will will be a fun-filled visit the many children
who support our events. There will be singing, dancing, children’s workshops, a puppy play area and fun and games for all, so it’s definitely a date for your diary.
If you would like to bring a tin of dog food to donate, it would be greatly appreciated by our many four-legged friends. They’re for life Please do think very carefully before giving a pet for Christmas. That cute little pup will grow very quickly, and will live, on average, for 1015 years. If you would like to help the dogs, but adopting is not possible, then please do come and walk one of them at the refuge. You would make a dog very happy. Assistance required Please contact us if you can assist in any way on 922 778630. We always need tinned dog-food for our older animals, plus blankets, towels, sheets, dog toys, collars and leads. You can call into the Accion refuge on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday afternoons, from 2-5pm, and Saturdays between 1-4pm. Find us here Accion del Sol is situated directly under the Ecological Park (exit 52) on the northbound TF-1. Head for the giant windmills, and you’ll find us in the buildings on the righthand side. E-mail the refuge at teneriffa@ aktiontier.org or, for further details, visit our Facebook page: action tier Accion del Sol
TENERIFE Isla Sur Lions Club has provided a fun day out for 60 children, and their carers, from local orphanages and homes.
This an annual, festive event took place at Aqualand and the children travelled by coach. Food and drink was provided by the Lions, but the tasty lunch pizzas were donated by Roy’s Pizzas.
The weather was hot and sunny, so it was a jump-into-the-pool type of day. Nobody missed out on the spectacular dolphin show, but the main event was the arrival of Father Christmas and his Elves. Some of Wingate School’s Sixth Form had, for weeks, collected toys and games, which they wrapped. And a five-strong team helped Papa Noel give out gift parcels at the party. All in all, a super day out for the kids, and everyone else!

Cats Welfare news IF you’re not able to give a cat a permanent home, have you ever considered fostering instead? For those of you who may be unsure, here are a few FAQs (and answers) to help you make up your mind.
Q. Do I have to be at home all day? A. No, you can have a full-time job, work irregular hours or nights and still foster. Fostering kittens may need you to be around more often, but we can talk to you about work/ life commitments. Q. Will Cats Welfare pay for food and litter? A. Yes, and also vet treatment, toys, bedding, pet carriers etc. Everything your foster cat needs.
Please foster!
Q. Will the cat have any issues? A. Most of the cats needing foster homes are confident, and have just fallen on hard times. Some, though, can be anxious or shy, which is why being in a loving foster home can help them become more outgoing. We will not ask you to foster a cat you are not confident with. Q. Is it just kittens who need foster homes? A. We need foster homes for all kinds of cats and kittens - old, young, recovering from operations etc. Q. Do I need a garden? A. Foster cats need to be kept inside so they don’t get lost. Not having a garden is not a problem. Q. What happens if I go on holiday? A. Tell us when you are unable to foster,
and we will work around those dates and make alternative arrangements. Q. Can I foster if I have my own cat or other animals? A. Yes, probably. Contact us to discuss further. Q. I have a busy, family home. Can I still foster? A. You can still foster if you have a busy home and children. Some shyer cats may do better in a quieter household, but we match the cat to the foster carer. Q. What happens if I need to take the cat to the vets? A. We use four vets’ practices. You can either take the cat yourself, and we will give you a code to authorise the cost to go on our bill, or we will collect and return.
Q. What if I get too attached, and don’t want to give it back? A. That’s fine. We are always happy when a cat gets a new, loving home. Do you have room for a foster cat in your home, or have more questions? We’d love to hear from you. Whatsapp Maria on 646629129 (seven days a week, 9-6pm), message us on Facebook or contact us on our website www.cats-
welfare-tenerife.com Designer sale A brilliant total of 886.20 euros was raised at this month’s Designer Sale. Every cent will go towards our vets’ bills. Heartfelt thanks go to our wonderful helpers. As usual, the venue was perfect, so thank you to The Palms Bar, Golf del Sur. Last, but by no means least, a BIG thank-you to everyone who came to support us. See you
again mid February! Koala Sur This month’s craft tables in Koala Sur Adeje and Las Chafiras have raised more than 300 euros, and we received lots of donated cat food. Our volunteers work, tirelessly, to make the beautiful hand-crafted items we have for sale. We can’t thank them enough, along with those who give up their Saturdays, once a month, to man the tables. Donations Items in good condition can be dropped into the shop on San Blas in Golf del Sur (behind Hiperdino). It is open seven days a week, 106pm, Saturdays 10-4pm. K9 news
Meet K9’s Princess Hi, Princessa here. My people at K9 say I’m Princess by name, and Princess by nature. I think they mean that in a good way!
I’m a small and quiet girl, and, although I’m just over eight years old, I’m still as fit as a fiddle, and very active. I had to come and stay at the refuge because of a change in my family circumstances. Everyone is very nice to me here, but I really want to spend my senior years in a comfy and cosy home, with my own, loving family. I love people, and get on well with other dogs. I like to set an example to the youngsters at K9, so I’m always very well behaved. I share a room at the refuge with my good friend, Hooch. He is Large to my Little, and we get on really well. I love going out for walks, and, if it weren’t for my grey hair, you would hardly know I’m in my 70s, in human years! My walking people say
I am a delight to take out, as I am good on and off the lead, and always come back when called. Do you have a place in your home and heart for me in my older years? You’ll receive my love and and devotion in return. I don’t want to live with young children
because, as much as I like them, they can be a little overwhelming at my time of life. If you would like to meet me, please get in touch with my people at K9 in any of the ways mentioned below. A Wonderful Night The annual, K9 festive dinner, held at
Cueva El Campesina in Aldea Blanca, was very well attended, with 145 people enjoying good food, wine, dancing and excellent entertainment. Guests were, as always, incredibly generous, and the event raised well over 1000 euros for our dogs. Many thanks to all our supporters who bought tickets and attended the event, and all who donated prizes: Hollywood Mirage for their seven-day, studioapartment stay; The Sound of Musicals for the 2 person VIP ticket to attend their show; Aidy Evans and Storm Duo for the fabulous entertainment. Also, Restaurante Cueva El Campesino for the lovely meal; Mikey and Lyn for organising it all (we all know that without you it wouldn’t have happened!). And last, but far from least, to all those who brought food and treats for our pupsters, who are what it is all about. They say: “Thanks for caring about us guys - we really appreciate your support”. Other ways to help
* Remember our monthly car-boot sale. This month on Sunday, 18th December at Los Gigantes bus station from 9am-12.30pm * Why not visit us and walk some of our dogs? They love it, and you will love it! Come along any day between 101pm. * Donate or buy at the K9 shop in Alcala * Pop by the refuge with some old blankets, towels and newspapers as it gets cold at the refuge on winter nights. Or bring leads, collars, toys and treats - we always need them! Meet our dogs We have many dogs in all shapes and sizes - waiting patiently for
their loving, safe and secure forever homes. You can see them all, and their stories and pictures, on our website at www.k9tenerife.com Go to “K9 dogs/Dogs waiting for homes”. Hard Rock Cafe, Las Americas
So delicious, and so big! WE quite happily made another visit for lunch at the Hard Rock cafe in downtown Las Americas and were soon shown to our table.
Our waiter, Agustin, was extremely attentive and knowledgeable. And here’s a tip: always ask your waiter about the menu because if you tell him the sort of flavours you like, he will always recommend something you love! Agustin showed us the new cocktail menu, prepared for the festive season, which including alcoholic and non-alcoholic tipples. We both made a nonalcoholic choice. My colleague chose the “Pomegranata”, a strawberry, raspberry, pomegranate Rosemerry, while I opted for
a “Berilicious”, which could only be described as a posh Slush Puppy with raspberry, strawberry and orange. We sampled each others
and both were both gorgeous. The next 15 minutes were spent perusing the menu, which has an enormous selection.
We agreed to share the “mixed starter”, which looked a reasonable size in the photograph. But when it arrived, it could only be described as
Lupita Parque de la Reina has a secret - Lupita restaurant is fast becoming the place to eat, and it has a well-deserved reputation. All the usual Mexican specialities are on offer, but from midday until 4pm, check out its 3.95-euro menu. You can have a bowl of soup or garlic bread, main meal (selection of 20) and ice cream or coffee to finish, which is excellent value for money. Also, evening and weekend menus are available from 4.95-euros. Now open Mondays! Special offer: Mixed Grill for 2 people with a bottle of wine only 20 euros.

absolutely massive. There were chicken wings, smothered in BBQ sauce and accompanied by a creamy, blue-cheese dip; huge chicken strips in crunchy breadcrumbs with honey-mustard sauce, and a large bowl of spinach, artichoke and a four-cheese dip, served with Parmesan flat bread. Delicious! We also chose bruschetta or loaded potato skins, filled with cheese and bacon with sour cream. And, last but not least, delicious onion rings with a BBQ sauce. There were also three sauces: “tangy”, “classic” and “heavy metal”, the latter strictly for hard-core spice-lovers. That was all just the starter, and we were
already feeling full … yet there was still the main course to negotiate! We selected “The Texan”: a choice of pulled pork or chicken, chipotle, cheese Monterrey Jack or Cheddar, accompanied by BBQ sauce with optional chili jalapeños and crispy onion, all within a huge, brioche, toasted bun. Again, it was enormous and more than tickled our tastebuds. The local “Legendary”, which is different in every Hard Rock cafe, also tempted us. This one consisted of a burger, pulled pork, cheese and a fried banana, which sounds strange but is typically Canarian and tasted delicious. The burger is also cooked to your taste, and medium-rare was just perfect for us. We tried so hard to finish the course because the flavours were amazing, but we simply couldn’t because we were both about to burst. There is a superb dessert menu of hot and cold choices. But for us, it was impossible, even, to share a sample of anything because the meal had exhausted us, although it really was worth it. In fact, everything we tasted or viewed could be described as a fabulous, lunchtime treat! The Hard Rock Café is by the fountains opposite the Safari shopping centre in Las Americas.

New Year
Home, where the heart is
hair solutions By Carl from Robot AS the year draws to a close, and you think of what’s gone by over the last 12 months, you are, perhaps, making promises to yourself to change your lifestyle. You may have made resolutions to lose weight, go to a gym, spend more time with your family etc. Well, how about making a new hair resolution, to break out of the rut you may be in? A change of style, or a new colour, can be all it takes to give your image a lift. Everyone likes to
receive compliments on his or her hair, be it a small acknowledgement, or a massive “Wow”. Your hair can, and does, speak volumes about your image and personality. Make sure it’s cut regularly, keep up to those roots, and re-vamp that style, now and again. Leaving your hair
uncut for months only leads, eventually, to more being cut off. Showing inches of roots, and letting your colour fade, can really pull you down. So, stay in touch with your stylist, and, as you leave the salon, schedule that appointment for your next visit. Make a promise to yourself that, in 2017, your hair will be a little higher on your list of priorities. Keeping up to it shouldn’t be a chore, but a pleasure. Thank you for reading my weekly column during 2016. Here’s hoping that my advice goes some way to inspiring you to be more adventurous with your hair.
A LITTLE BLACK MAGIC By Carl Pattison
IF you’re going to that special do, and you’re stuck for ideas on what to wear, and money’s short and time is tight to find that one special dress, what do you do?
Just dig out that little black number from the back of your wardrobe, and let’s see what we can do with it. If you’ve worn it a few times, you’re going to have to wear it in a different way. The easiest method is to add colour to it with a pair of killer heels, and a colour co-ordinated bag. For example: hot-red will add drama, and vamp up your dress to give it a new lease of life.
Throw in this year’s hot metallics with your jewellery, and the attention will be drawn away from a well-worn dress and onto a “new” one, just by adding accessories. Another idea is to cover up the top half with a short, transparent jacket or wrap. This will add more interest to your look, and soften bare arms if you’re a little conscious of them. A short, black dress
with a long, thin cardigan-coat can look stunning, and it flatters most shapes. Just make sure that you “disguise” last year’s dress by wearing it with something new, but cost-effective. Jewellery is the easiest option by layering up your look to give you that feeling of a new dress from an old favourite. Be creative, and save on splashing the cash this festive season.
By Miruna Voicu As ex-pats, it’s always an interesting question as to where you consider “home” to be. For the Swallows, who split their time between the UK and Tenerife, their answer would, probably, be the UK.
But for those of us who live here, and have done for some time, the question is more complicated. We all form strong attachments to the place where we live, because our physical surroundings play such an important role in creating a sense of meaning and organisation in our lives. Home should be a place of order and calm, and the centre of our sometimes-chaotic world. That’s why it is so important to make your home yours, with personal tastes and preferences, and to store and display precious things around you, in a place where you feel safe and relaxed. Chances are that if you work in a service industry here, you will be working over the Christmas period, and unable to go back to the UK, even if you wanted to. Make the best of wherever you are by surrounding yourself with friends and loved
ones - when you can. If you are working on the big day, just recreate it at a different time which is convenient to you all. The Spanish celebrate Christmas Eve more than they do the 25th, and give their presents on Kings Day which is 6th January. For practical reasons, many people are now giving them on Christmas Day, so it’s not about one particular date. As you reflect upon where your home is, ask yourself why this particular place, out of the many in which you may have lived, stands out as
the one that feels like home. By doing so, you may also gain a deeper understanding of how you think about yourself, and your connection with the world at large. Perhaps the answer is that home is, indeed, where the heart is. It doesn’t really matter how, or when, you do it, but celebrate it as best you can. At some point, surround yourself with family and friends, at a time of your choosing, and enjoy! Have a Happy Christmas, and let Deco Nuevo help to create the centre of your world in the New Year.

Don’t worry, be happy!
By Val Sainsbury WE are either an optimist or a pessimist, or a mixture of both! But British scientists have discovered that those who are the happiest in middle age should live longer than the others.
Those over-50s, who enjoy life regularly, have a 24% reduced risk of dying in the next seven years. Experts from the University College, London, tracked more than 9,000 men and women in their fifties
and sixties, living in England. Every two years, between 2002 and 2006, the volunteers were asked questions about their enjoyment of life, how much they enjoyed the company of others, and how much they enjoyed daily activities. Almost 25% reported experiencing no enjoyment during any of the three assessments, 20% reported enjoyment on one of the three, 22% on two assessments, and 34% on all three occasions. Those who reported high life enjoyment at all three assessments were 24% less likely to die during the follow-up period, compared with those who said they had no enjoyment. And those who said they enjoyed life on two occasions had a 17% reduced risk.
The scientists suspect that this may be because people’s general moods alter the levels of both harmful and beneficial hormones in their bodies. Being happy reduces stress and anxiety hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol, which can raise blood pressure and be a burden on the heart. People who are less happy are also more
likely to smoke, and drink to unhealthy levels. Previous studies have also found that people who are less stressed have lower cholesterol levels, are less prone to inflammation, have a better immune response and higher levels of antioxidants in the blood. The authors, writing in the British Medical Journal, said they could
not be sure there was a direct, biological link between happiness and mortality, because their study was merely observational. But they said that two main factors could be relevant. “Firstly, enjoyment of life might exert an influence through associations with healthy lifestyle,” they wrote. “Physical activity, not smoking, and a healthy diet have been related to positive well-being, while healthcare and self-care behaviours might also be relevant. “Secondly, subjective well-being has been correlated with low concentrations of cortisol in everyday life, with low levels of inflammatory markers in some studies, and with changes in expression of genes regulating inflammation and
antibody production.” People who are happier may also get more sleep, which has a beneficial impact on their immune and metabolic systems. While the study could not conclude a direct biological link between happiness and mortality, researchers noted that their observational study could indicate a connection. “These processes might contribute to a broad range of health outcomes,” the UCL team concluded. The findings come after a study published last week by Harvard School of Public Health determined that people who were more optimistic lived longer. This was linked to a significantly-reduced risk of dying from cancer, heart disease, strokes, respiratory disease and infection.
Buying second-hand cars By Emma at Motorworld
FOLLOWING on from my last column, I will carry on explaining the complex law affecting all secondhand car buyers.
It should prove useful for many readers, and offers clarification of the latest, most up-to-date information available. Can a guarantee be limited to the clock’s kilometres? In the case of the legal guarantee, the answer is No, the kilometres cannot be limited. However, as will be explained further into the article, kilometres play a vital role in the items covered during the guarantee period. In the case of the commercial guarantee, the answer is Yes. The guarantee is an additional extra offered by the seller, so they have the right to limit the kilometres, as they do with the time the cover is provided for. If the vehicle is repaired under guarantee, is
there any further guarantee offered? Yes, once the vehicle has been repaired under guarantee, the repair itself is given a further six months’ guarantee; this continues, even if the commercial or legal guarantee has expired. Can a vehicle be purchased without a guarantee if both parties agree? As stated above, the legal guarantee and the hidden-defects guarantee are provided to the purchaser by law, and nobody can sign away his/her rights
provided. If you agree to a sale without a guarantee, a legal claim can still be made. What does a legal guarantee cover? With a legal guarantee the law determines the coverage offered as that given when there is a lack of compliance (fault) between the description of the vehicle on the contract provided and the reality. A vehicle is considered correctly-described if the following occurs: *The description given by the seller describes the vehicle as it was
when shown to the purchaser. *The vehicle is apt for ordinary use. *The vehicle is of an expected standard and possesses the common benefits that the users should expect. There is NO lack of compliance (and subsequent guarantee) if the consumer was made aware of the fault, or if the fault couldn’t be ignored when the contract was issued. The guarantee covers any faults present on the vehicle at the time it was handed to the consumer
and that appear during the guarantee period. However, the law clearly states that fair wearand-tear items are not covered; neither are damages caused by other uses, such as: *The fault is caused by the normal wastage of the part, material or component *The fault is caused by a lack of appropriate maintenance or by the misuse of the vehicle *The fault is caused by a robbery or accident Can the guarantee provider obligate the consumer to carry
out maintenance at a specific place? As far as the legal guarantee is concerned, the answer is No. But the maintenance must be carried out in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines, and in a legal and registered garage to maintain the guarantee. If the consumer chooses to maintain his/her car in another garage, and a subsequent fault related to the maintenance occurs, the consumer cannot request the repair under the seller’s guarantee. In this case, it would be under the guarantee of the repair garage. Also, if the fault is generated from a lack of maintenance, again, it wouldn’t be covered. If we are referring to an extended guarantee, as would be the commercial guarantee, the seller can oblige the consumer to use a certain garage for the repairs to maintain the additional benefits of the extended guarantee. This is most common with new cars because the main dealer insists that you use its workshop in order to keep the guarantee, be it five or seven years.

Behind the mic
IT was to be the perfect mix, a veritable tour de force, to showcase his skills. A seamless, flowing transition was unfolding, from one track to another. And Oasis Fm DJ Adam Maggs, aka Maggsy, was as confident as they come! But, as with the bestlaid plans of mice and men, events took an embarrassing turn for the worse! “When I first became a DJ, many years before I went to Tenerife, I worked on a pirate radio station in the UK,” he said.
“There wasn’t m u c h talking to be done, but I had to mix the songs t o g e t h e r, live on air. “I was mixing two vinyls, and I did it f l a w l e s s l y. I really thought it was going to sound amazing, and that everyone was going to love it. “But I pulled the needle off the wrong record, and

Not really up to scratch! there was a deadly silence. That was my first major mistake in the DJ world. “It probably lasted for only about 10 seconds. When I realised my mistake, I put on another disc to get it all going again, and all to the sound of the needle, scratching across the record!” Adam, 38, who was born in Clactonon-Sea, Essex, lives with his partner, Lisa Bridge, in Lees, near Manchester. “I lived in Tenerife for about 3½ years,” he said. “One of my friends was moving over there to live, a n d
asked if I wanted to join him. First of all, I worked as a compere, and was nominated for the Best Newcomer award at the TEAs, as well as twice for the Best Compere award. “But then I was approached by Oasis Fm, and I started working for them in November 2015. “I met Lisa when she first went to the island, about three years ago, and she won the Best Female Singer award at the 2015 TEAs. “It was great in Tenerife while it lasted, but we decided to move back to England together in April.” Adam, who has a 16-year-old son, Liam, broadcasts his Oasis radio show from home on Saturdays and Sundays, from 6-8pm. “But during the week, I work for a brand-new company, Planet Reference. com,” he said. “It is an employment reference network, and has just started sponsoring my show. Lisa is now my boss, because it’s her company!” Lisa, who also has a son, Charlie,12, sings in local pubs every Friday and Saturday evening, and sometimes at lunchtime on a Sunday. Adam, her ever dependable roadie, who sets up all the necessary equipment for her, said: “I’ve done a bit of singing over here since I’ve been back, but, mainly, I’ve put it aside. “What I do miss most about Tenerife is the weather. It’s so cold here, and not good at all at the moment. “But Christmas feels quite nice this year.
We’ve just put up the tree and the lights, and we’re looking forward to it. “We’ll see each other’s families, and I’ll be going down to Clacton to visit my Mum, Marion, at New Year, to spend the day with her.” He added: “I made a lot of good friends in Tenerife, in all the different places where I worked. I do miss them, but we plan to go back there on holiday, so we can see everyone. “But, by using Facebook I can keep up to date with everything that’s going on over there. “As for my show, I concentrate on new releases and current, pop-chart music. I also play tracks from the late Seventies and early Eighties, but no earlier than that!” Our conversation turned to the recent X-Factor final. “I didn’t follow it once Honey G started getting through every week!” he said ruefully. And, like a lot of people, he’s surprised that she’s landed a recording contract with Simon Cowell’s Syco label. Over the past 20 years,
Adam has worked as a DJ and hosted karaoke nights, both in the UK, and on the island He left school at 16, and studied electronics and manufacturing at college. “I’m a qualified electrician, and worked on the railway, both on the main line and the London Underground,” he said. “And I was a signal engineer.” After working on the railway for 10 years, he was made redundant. During that period, he had been compering at the weekends only, and losing his job persuaded him to pursue that career on a full-time basis. “So now, I’m a DJ at weekends, and, during the week, I work in recruitment, making sure the correct people are in the correct positions!” Adam reveals: “I’ve always wanted to travel, which is what brought me to Tenerife, originally, and there are lots of places in the world that Lisa and I want to visit.” For the moment, though, he’s happy and settled in chilly old England, a world away from our warm, winter temperatures.
The sound of silence MAGGSY remembers the time he was interviewed on Oasis Fm by Roscoe, after being nominated for the Best Compere award at the 2014 TEAs. “I was so nervous about being live on the radio, that barely any words came out, and my mind just froze,” he said. “It was my shortest interview ever. “As soon as I put on the headphones, and the questions started firing my way, the only words that came out were gobbledygook. “Who’d have thought I’d go on to a career in radio presenting after that? And, these days, it’s hard to believe that I have to cut myself down sometimes, when I realise I’m chatting too much.”

No messing with Gaffers! WITH the exception of a couple of results, it was a close night on Tuesday in Division One of the Direct Telecom Pool League.
The stand-out exceptions were current league leaders Gaffers A, who hosted Terrace Roosters. It has not been a good few weeks for the away side and they fared no better as Gaffers raced into a 4 -0 lead, which quickly became five, six then seven … and it was game over. The final 11-1 score means - and they won’t like me reminding them - that over the last three games, the Roosters have lost 34-2. They will be pleased with the Christmas break! Another team bucking the trend were Treehouse A, who finished off their 2016 fixtures at home against Bluebell A. As always, it was close over the opening frames, but the home side got themselves into the lead, so Bluebell A were playing catch-up. The visitors played some good pool, but it wasn’t enough because the home side were over the finish line with plenty to spare. Rewind Rewired, looking to get back to winning ways, faced in-form
Terrace Bantams, who were unbeaten in six going into this fixture. Bantams struck first as Paul returned to the side, but Rewired came straight back - and this was the theme over the first two sessions as the first eight frames were shared. Paul then put the Bantams back in front, and it looked as though they would take a twoframe lead, and at least a point, because Marky P had an easy finish. But he forgot to chalk his cue and when he jumped the white over his final ball, the two shots was all his opponent needed to take the frame. The momentum was now with the home team, and their two best players stepped up to the plate and grabbed the final frames for the win. Palms A remain in second place after a fair draw in Silencio. Exiles A, who are mustard on their own table, again demonstrated their talent. In fact, they probably feel they should have taken all three points after starting well. Tel, who was excellent all night, got the better of Simon after a smart clearance, and Geoff did the same to JT. But Palms are used to being behind, and Stevie got them back in it, before Roscoe levelled

the contest. It set the tone for the evening as the lead swayed one way and then the other. At 4-4 there was all to play for, but the visitors were in confident mood when they were gifted frame 9. Tel’s fourball clearance set up a long black, which he smacked smoothly into the bottom pocket. However his woollyjumper sleeve was nestled on the yellow ball. His cue action also moved the ball for a foul, and with the black ball sunk, it meant the

frame being lost. It was one of those things! Mark and Geoff then gave Exiles A a 6-5 lead, which looked like being decisive. But Palms A were not finished. Captain Roscoe completed his hat-trick as he edged out Ben to take a point back to Torviscas. Palms Elite were looking to move up the table and get closer to their Phoenix Potters rivals. The standard of pool was excellent and neither side were giving anything away: 2 -2 soon became 4-4, and it was down to who blinked first. It soon became clear what the end-result would be as there was nothing to choose between the sides, with Eric from the Potters beating Wayne in the final frame to draw the match and share the points. It was a similar match between Gaffers B and Rewind A, as the visitors looked to bounce back from the previous week’s defeat. Again, the early frames were traded as

the teams swapped blows. And, entering the final session, neither side could get away. Chances were taken and chances were missed, and, at the end, a draw seemed to suit both sides. In Division Two, it is fair to say that it is close at the top. But, going into the Christmas break, Picasso’s A have retained top spot. Just! They were away at closest rivals Yates Bar, and were keen to put some distance between them. The opening session ended allsquare, but Yates Bar got their noses in front to lead 5-3. Picasso’s needed to come back to take something from the match, but it wasn’t to be. Their opponents saw it out and are now just a point behind with a game in hand. There was also another top-table clash in Los Cristianos as Bluebell B faced-off against James Hammers C. Both sides are in the title race, and the away side started stronger, taking a 3-1 lead. They repeated this scoreline in the middle section, and, at 6 -2, they were comfortable. Bluebell B tried to rally, knowing they

needed all four remaining frames for a draw, but it just wasn’t their night. Hammers C were again too strong, the win moving them above Bluebell B into third spot. The final two matches were clashes between sides in the bottom half of the table. Palms Rebels moved level on points with Splash Bar after beating them 7-5, and Treehouse B added three points to their total with a good win against Hoppys A. Playgirls get a semi! YES, there is a pun in the headline, but you can work that out for yourselves! But it just goes to show what a great competition the Canarian Weekly team handicap is.
Sitting comfortably adrift at the bottom of Division 2, Ourplace Playgirls used their handicap advantage to good use as they beat Bar Leones 4-3 and booked a place in the Plate semi-final. Way to go girls! And this section of the competition also produced a major upset
at Clouseaus, with the Palm Mar team knocking out Division 1 side Boothen 5-2. An all-Division 1 tie saw Palms Sports Bar edge Spear Chuckers, while Scruffy Macs overcame a 368-point deficit to squeak past Marilyns A. More drama came in the Trophy draw, and none more so than Phoenix Bar’s matchup with The Pub. At 3-3 and one each, with both teams on a finish, Paul Pod Mason stepped up to hit double 8 and book the Los Abrigos side’s place in the last four. That result was mirrored at The Tavern as another last-leg

and came through with a 5-2 win over Sandys Reborn. And a big hat-tip to the Legends’ gang after they got past their loftier Emerald Lounge opponents. Rounding up then, six of the eight ties were

Injury curse strikes again Iberostar Tenerife 94 UCAM Murcia 80 THERE was little joy for Tenerife after Sunday’s victory because Javier Bairan, who top-scored with 17 points, was carried off late on with an injury that could sideline him for weeks.
The club physio has been working overtime all season, with injuries to key players overlapping; no sooner does one player return than another goes down. Latest signing Taqwa Pinero made his debut in this big win, despite looking short of match fitness. But the midweek European League is relentless and hardly suitable for players to shake off little knocks, or return to action after a few weeks off. Yet that hasn’t prevented Tenerife
from going top of Group D with seven wins and two defeats. Their latest European triumph came in Montenegro on Wednesday when they defeated KK Mornar 89-72 to complete a double over them. Tenerife scored a huge 105-57 victory in the home leg in La Laguna, and they were certainly comfortable in Montenegro. They were 73-50 ahead going into the final quarter, and were able to give valuable minutes to the squad’s fringe players. Greek-born Georgios Bogris starred with 22 points in another fine, all-round show from the entire squad. It leaves them five games to play in the qualifying stages, the top four in each group progressing to the next phase. Tenerife are home to Lithuania’s Juventus on Wednesday at 7.30pm.
won by the odd point, and the semi-finals will include four Division 1 teams and four Division 2 teams, shared equally
between the Trophy and the Plate. We may have got the handicaps right this time!

Perez keeps it in family Egatesa 0 Atletico Madrid 0 MIXING with the top teams in Spain’s Premier League has been a real education for Egatesa Granadilla Tenerife. On holiday Thursday, they had a bumper 1,200 crowd for the visit of Atletico Madrid at their El Medano ground. They enjoyed a creditable draw, home keeper Noelia Gil keeping her old teammates at bay. There was a more painful reunion a few days later, at Levante, where their former striker, Maria Jose Perez, showed off the family’s goal-scoring skills. Her cousin, a former CD Tenerife player, is Newcastle’s goal-scoring star Ayoze Perez. Despite taking the lead through Ayano, Tenerife went 3-1 behind, with Maria scoring twice. Paloma Lazaro clawed back an injury time goal but the visitors left Levante with a 3-2 defeat. La Laguna team Tacuense have yet to
win this season, but Sunday’s 1-1 draw with Albacete enabled them to move off the bottom spot in the Premier League. Their holiday game last Thursday at Espanyol ended in a 2-0 defeat, but they showed character to come back for the draw a few days later. On Sunday (18th Dec), there is a charity day at the El Medano ground from 11am, with bouncy castles, paella, and lots of sporting contests. The main event is a football match at 4pm between the friends of Egatesa player Paloma, and the friends of former CD Tenerife player Pier. Lots of local footballers past and present will be attending.

Top-dogs’ potent pedigree
By Colin Kirby
SOMETIMES you just have to admit to being secondbest. CD Tenerife had appeared to be turning in a defensive masterclass, only for a few sloppy seconds to gift the points to tabletopping Levante.
That subtle difference in class separates a mid-table side from promotion challengers. Tenerife, who travelled to the Valencia club on a six-game unbeaten run and with an unchanged team, set out their stall well, absorbing early pressure and settling calmly. Rafael, Levante’s chief tormentor, had a halfhearted penalty shout after tripping over advancing goalie Dani, and it took 10 minutes for the visitors to venture into their hosts’ half. Amath raced after a loose ball, but home keeper Fernandez was decisive, scooping it up before he could reach it. Raul Camara did well to block a Levante shot at the post, and Inaki
Levante 1 CD Tenerife 0 tried a hanging cross after running from the other full-back slot. But Fernandez caught it easily. There was a sniff of encouragement when Fernandez scuffed a clearance, but Cristo Gonzalez wasn’t able to punish him. The young forward was battling hard and taking plenty of knocks without making a fuss - a hopeful sign of his improving attitude. Levante were more adventurous, Rafael forcing a tremendous save from Tenerife’s Dani Hernandez. He was offside, but the keeper didn’t know that when it was struck from outside his line of vision. A clever cut-back from Levante deserved better than Ruben’s wide shot, and Rafael had high hopes for a flicked ball that bobbled before Dani got his gloves firmly on it. It was half-a-job well done by Tenerife, and, a few minutes into the second half, Cristo should have done better with a perfectlyweighted pass inside from Amath. But home pressure
was building, not that it was noticeable from super-cool Hernandez, who plucked a bullet header from just under the bar. There was a warning of defensive frailty to come when Rafael danced around three Tenerife defenders before unleashing a powerful
shot which only just cleared the bar. Vitolo nearly set Levante on the goal trail when he lost the ball, and he owes a beer to Carlos Ruiz for recovering it before any harm could be done. Hernandez continued to repel the increasing raids, and a two-fisted
clearance from a freekick would have graced any game. But it wasn’t all oneway. Cristo took up a good position on the edge of the box, but dithered and his soft touch was cleared easily, and Aitor Sanz tested the home keeper with a low shot.
Just as Tenerife fans back home were contemplating a few extra drinks to toast a gallant draw, disaster struck. A Levante attack saw the ball pinging around the goal area. Aaron made a poor half-clearance and back came the ball. This time, though, Alberto failed to cut it out and Casadesus made it 1-0. It was a cruel blow, but Tenerife can have no complaints. The other bad news was the booking of Raul Camara, which means he misses the home game against Alcorcon tomorrow (Saturday) at 5pm. Jorge made a rare appearance from the bench, so he is likely to be the replacement, or fit-again Samuel Camille. It’s not just the final match before the festive break but also the last before January’s transfer window opens, and fans will be hoping for at least a couple of new faces. But the on-loan return of goal-scoring local Nano now looks extremely unlikely.
That sinking feeling By Colin Kirby
LOSING at home against basement boys Union Puerto was the latest shock in Marino’s sinking form. That’s just one point from the last five games and a slump from top of the table to seventh.
The loud singing from the Union Puerto changing room after the match showed how important it was to the Fuerteventura side in their relegation battle. A poor first half ended in stalemate, but Marino knew victory was vital and made two changes at half-time: Aksy for Saavedra and Hamed for Saul Gonzalez. The new plan was soon in tatters as
CD Marino 0 Union Puerto 2
Union attacked down the right, with captain Hector firing the ball easily past keeper Petar. But it did sting Marino into action. Mendy headed wide
from a corner and Fran Delgado carved out an opening after roasting the visitors full-back. The ball into the box eluded the Marino players, though.
Another throw of the dice was needed, and defender Brad Mills was replaced by big forward Adan, who always adds strength and power to the attack.
The forward soon put the Union keeper under pressure as he left him in a crumpled heap after beating him for a high ball. Union were far from the best side to visit Marino this season, but they played hard for each other and sensed that Marino were vulnerable. After 65 minutes, sub Diego cut in from the right, passed across the face of the goal and Cristian had plenty of time to pick his spot for a 2-0 lead. The game was slipping away as Mendy tried something ambitious. He looked up from a deep position and tried to chip the keeper, who met the dipping ball with a safe pair of hands. Aksy was making a good contribution to the
home side with his wellmeasured passes but Union defended their precious advantage stoutly. Kevin Castro supplied a delicate nod down to Adan, but the visiting keeper smothered the ball well. Marino lay siege to the Union goal, and, with just two minutes remaining, a foul on Adan gave them some hope from the penalty spot. Adan struck his shot true but Julio dived the right way, made a tremendous save and was mobbed by team-mates. A Marino season that promised so much is crumbling, and even the home form has fallen apart. So any points would be welcome from this weekend’s game at Estrella before the festive break.
