I Am a Rock, I Am an Island By Kaitlyn Tiffany A winter’s day. In a deep and dark December. I am alone. Gazing from my window. To the streets below. On a freshly fallen silent shroud of snow. I am a rock. I am an island. I have my books, and my poetry to protect me. I am shielded in my armor. Hiding in my room. Safe within my womb. I touch no one, and no one touches me.

Don’t talk of love. Well I’ve heard the word before. It’s sleeping in my memory. I won’t disturb the slumber. Of feelings that have died. If I never loved, I never would have cried. And a rock feels no pain and an island never cries

Dancing With Myself // Songs to dance to when you’re all alone and your only companion is a symphony 1) Oh! Sweet Nuthin' by The Velvet Underground // 2) Gypsy by Fleetwood Mac // 3) For What It’s Worth by Buffalo Springfield // 4) The Oogum Boogum Song by Brenton Wood // 5) Rocket Man by Elton John // 6) The Only Living Boy In New York by Simon and Garfunkel // 7) Mary Jane’s Last Dance by Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers // 8) Californication by Red Hot Chili Peppers // 9) I Melt With You by Modern English // 10) Heroes by David Bowie

December has been a very reflective month for me, looking toward the future with anticipation and for once in my life…having the ability to be happy in the moment. I am the first person to preach “You have to like in the now!”, but until recently I had never truly taken a dose of my own medicine. I’ve begun to see life as a page rather than an entire novel and it has allowed me to think so much clearer and as a result, I can live my life how it is intended. Also I have regained a sense of living that is reminiscent of my middle school years, when things weren’t as complicated and I looked forward to summer vacation, not the end of my educational experience. I am more realistic these days, while still having my optimistic soul. Overall, I just want to say that it’s be an interesting month full of true joy. Memories: having visions of my past lives, dancing alone in my room, connecting with my crystals, taking deep breaths, hearing “Rocket Man” for the first time in years, remembering my dreams, making life changing decisions, munching on late night non-dairy ice cream, Saturday night meditations, making holiday candles, watching portlandia, and feeling bliss.

Contrasting Aesthetic Adventures in living a double life By Kaitlyn Tiffany I often imagine legends like Elton John, David Bowie, and Cher when I think of people who embrace their dark and light sides. There is something so incredible about having an alter ego and I’m trying to start incorporating that philosophy into my own life and outfits. Why would you just be one person when you could be multiple? For the past couple years now I’ve been obsessed with the spooky nature of people like Stevie Nicks and the fabulous goths of the late 1970’s and 1980’s. The “Everyday is Halloween” motto is one I have definitely adopted recently. I’m beginning to not be afraid of changing things up and not sticking to the script, this goes with my life in general and, of course, my style. Along with the gods and goddesses I’ve already mentioned, some of my fashion inspirations include Elvira Mistress of the Dark, Pamela Anderson, Morticia Addams, Cher (from Clueless), Dr. Frank N Furter, Marilyn Monroe, Vampira, Kat Dennings, anyone in Charmed, and pretty much all the Spice Girls. I also love dressing up like my favorite on-screen characters because I love to pretend that my life is a movie.

In regards to life, I like to embrace my dark side. Especially during the winter months, I tend to grasp onto anything that reminds me of warmth, whether that e physically tanning myself or being decked out in bright colors (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I then begin to hinder my creativity because I’m afraid of the inevitability of snow. Although there is an alternative to this confining path: living for the season and enjoying all the good and bad things that some with it.. This realization actually began all the way back in the summer of 2015. I wrapped myself in the rapture of The Cure and I was in love with their gloomy yet blissful tunes. This band, especially the 1992 Wish album, was the soundtrack of my salad days. Robert Smith’s songs are truly beautiful and radiate happiness, while still keeping that gothic and spooky tone we all know and love. There is a certain ecstasy that gothically inclined people experience. The best way I can explain it is that when you honestly love and enjoy the dark, you can appreciate the light. I also think it’s so important not to wish away your days, whether its one hundred degrees outside or its below zero. Every season and every day of your life has something to offer so go out there and let it intoxicate you. Get high on life (Freaks and Geeks!) and don’t waste another year where all you do is hate your current state of living. Go outside and make a snow angel (or demon), drink your favorite spiced drink or latte, read a scary story or watch a horror flick and don’t be afraid to live unconventionally.
