ara celebrar el Día de las Madres, Canarte presentó en Cap Cana el espectáculo “Spring Concert”, que incluyó la participación de la Orquesta Dominicana de Vientos (ODV), auspiciada por el Ministerio de Cultura y dirigida por el músico Andrés Vidal. El evento, celebrado en mayo, sirvió como presentación oficial de Canarte, un movimiento que tiene como misión promover el arte en todas sus expresiones en la zona este de República Dominicana. La ODV es una banda sinfónica integrada por una selección de 60 instrumentistas del más alto nivel musical, con una edad entre los 12 y 25 años. EN. Canarte treated Cap Cana to a spectacular Spring Concert in celebration of Dominican Mother’s Day. The event featured the Dominican Wind Orchestra, sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and directed by musician Andrés Vidal. The concert, which was held in May, also marked the official launch of Canarte, a movement whose mission is to promote all branches of the arts in the Dominican Republic’s eastern region. TThe Dominican Wind Orchestra is a symphonic ensemble made up of 60 talented young musicians between the ages of 12 and 25.

a hospitalidad de Cap Cana no tiene límites. El complejo turístico residencial también se ocupa de unos inquilinos de menor tamaño y que llegan sin previo aviso, pero muy necesarios para el equilibrio de la biodiversidad: las abejas. El Programa de Rescate de Colmenas, inaugurado en 2014, responde al compromiso de Cap Cana por la sostenibilidad. Cuando una colmena se instala en casas, oficinas, colegios, balcones patios y jardines, un equipo de apicultores la traslada a apiarios que cuentan con las condiciones óptimas para el desarrollo de estos polinizadores. La reubicación se realiza en un entorno natural en el que no existe riesgo para la población. Es un espacio con abundante vegetación y cerca de un cuerpo de agua, de manera que las abejas pueden satisfacer sus necesidades fisiológicas y continuar con su vida normal. En esa pequeña foresta, próxima al Centro de Información y Ventas, se han tomado medidas para proveerles flores suficientes para todo el año. Desde el apiario la abeja cada día recorre, aproximadamente, un kilómetro a la redonda, y tiene a su disposición diferentes plantas melíferas, entre ellas palmas de coco, cuyas flores tienen mucho polen; las trinitarias, presentes a lo largo de la entrada de Cap Cana y en la zona donde se ubica el apiario; y la lippia, muy abundante en el área; además de lirios blancos y roble amarillo.

Todo comenzó por un enjambre que se había colado en la oficina de Ventas de Cap Cana, donde las abejas formaron una colmena en el hueco que un pájaro carpintero había dejado. Eso hizo que se clausurara una puerta de mucho tránsito. La solución era reubicarlas, lo que revela el compromiso de esta comunidad por la protección de la biodiversidad de plantas y de los polinizadores. El pasado domingo 20 de mayo Cap Cana celebró en Api Beach el Día Mundial de las Abejas con una degustación de miel del productor local Little Island Honey. EN. Cap Cana’s hospitality is unlimited, especially when it comes to our very tiniest inhabitants. Although these visitors - honeybees - are uninvited, they are more than welcome in our tourism and residential complex because of their essential role in maintaining a wellbalanced ecosystem. A Beehive Rescue Program was launched in 2014, in response to Cap Cana’s commitment to environmental sustainability. When bees start building their hive in homes, offices, schools, balconies, terraces or gardens, our beekeeping team will remove it carefully and take it to an area with the ideal conditions for these pollinators to develop.

The hives are relocated to a natural setting, near the Sales Office, where the bees don’t pose any risk to the public. The lush vegetation and nearby body of water mean that the bees can meet their physiological needs and lead a normal life. Enough flowers are provided in this small forest all year round. The bees’ territory, approximately one kilometer in radius, has a range of melliferous plants, including coconut palms whose blossoms are rich in pollen; bougainvillea, which grows along the access road to Cap Cana and in the area around the beehives; and lippia, which is very common in this area, as well as Madonna lilies and silver trumpet trees. It all began when a colony took over the Cap Cana Sales office. The bees started building their hive in a hole that had been drilled by a woodpecker, leading to the closure of a busy doorway. The solution was to relocate the bees, a reflection of this community’s commitment to protecting the biodiversity of plants and pollinators. On Sunday May 20th Cap Cana celebrated World Bee Day on Api Beach with a honey tasting by local producer Little Island Honey.

l domingo 10 de junio el Punta Espada Golf Club se convirtió en la sede del Primer Torneo Invitacional “Jan van Welie”, realizado entre los socios del Punta Espada y del Santo Domingo Country Club. Este grupo de jugadores, que tiene más de 25 años compartiendo su entusiasmo por el golf, respondió a la invitación de Cap Cana para participar en un encuentro amigable en el que reinó la camaradería. El torneo incluyó un reconocimiento a Jan van Welie, a quien se le entregó una placa que rezaba: “Reconocimiento por su pasión por el golf y haber impulsado el deporte en la República Dominicana”. Los ganadores del primer lugar fueron Juan Yanes y Luis Andrés Pérez, seguidos de Jesús González y Enriquillo Ureña, y del binomio conformado por Pepe Luis Aguiló y Jan van Welie en la tercera posición.

EN. On Sunday June 10th Punta Espada Golf Club hosted the First “Jan van Welie” Invitational Tournament, played between the members of Punta Espada and Santo Domingo Country Club. This group of players who have been sharing their enthusiasm for golf for more than 25 years accepted Cap Cana’s invitation to play in the friendly event, which was notable for its camaraderie. The tournament included an award for Jan van Welie, who was presented with a plaque inscribed with the following words: “In recognition of his passion for golf and for promoting the sport in the Dominican Republic.” Juan Yanes and Luis Andrés Pérez won first place, followed by Jesús González and Enriquillo Ureña in second place, and Pepe Luis Aguiló and Jan van Welie in third place.

La competición –por parejas bajo la modalidad Scramble– tuvo un costo de 75 dólares para miembros del Punta Espada Golf Club, 175 para los invitados de los miembros y dueños de propiedades en Cap Cana, y 275 para el resto de jugadores. Los participantes degustaron un suculento almuerzo en el restaurante Bella Vista, localizado en el propio club de golf. EN. El joyero francés accedió al pedido que el brasileño y pionero de la aviación precisaba: un reloj que se pudiera colocar en la muñeca para consultar la hora sin quitar las manos de los mandos de la aeronave. De ahí nació, en 1904, la leyenda del reloj Santos, un emblema del progreso técnico que ha ido evolucionando para adaptarse a los tiempos modernos sin perder los códigos estéticos que caracterizan a una marca como Cartier. El modelo evocaba la arquitectura parisina y la tendencia a la simetría, como si la inspiración hubiese salido de la misma Torre Eiffel. EN. When Louis-François Cartier and pilot Alberto Santos Dumont met in the early twentieth century, they made history. The French jeweler was responding to the Brazilian aviation pioneer’s request: to create a timepiece that can be worn on the wrist to enable pilots to check the time without taking their hands off the airplane controls. This emblem of technical progress has evolved with the times without losing the aesthetic qualities that epitomize the Cartier brand. The model evokes Parisian architecture and the trend for symmetry, as if inspired by the Eiffel Tower itself. The square-faced wristwatch can be described as revolutionary because it broke the traditional mold of roundshaped pocket watches. Its eight working cogs are a reflection of the mechanics and steel boom of the time. Santos Dumont designed 22 flying machines, including airships, monoplanes and biplanes. In 1901 he was the first pilot to overfly Paris, and five years later he established the first three official aviation records with a “heavier than air” machine –his 14-bis biplane– in the Parc Bagatelle.

Paraíso para la pesca Gracias a su ubicación geográfica, la Marina Cap Cana es considerada como uno de los 10 mejores lugares del mundo para la pesca deportiva del marlin. Así lo constata el prestigioso medio Billfish Report, que la ha incluido en el top ten durante los últimos seis años, una lista en que llegó a ocupar el puesto cimero en 2013. a temporada de pesca comenzó este año del 4 al 6 de mayo con The Cap Cana White Marlin Fishing Tournament 2018, que contó con la participación de 13 embarcaciones y equipos procedentes de Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Estados Unidos y República Dominicana. Efraín Rodríguez, a bordo del bote ganador Doña Lucy, acumuló 400 de los 700 puntos recibidos por la tripulación, por lo que fue reconocido como “Top Angler”. El segundo lugar fue a manos del equipo a bordo de Blue Bird, con un total de 625 puntos, de ellos 300 correspondieron a Carolina Mederos, que le valieron el tercer lugar como “Top Angler” y mención especial como único pescador femenino del torneo. El tercer puesto del evento lo consiguió el equipo de la embarcación Black Gold con 525 puntos, encabezado por Mike McCarthy con 300 puntos, quien se hizo con el segundo lugar como “Top Angler”.

This year’s fishing season got off to a great start on the weekend of May 4th-6th with The Cap Cana White Marlin Fishing Tournament 2018, in which 13 boats and teams from Puerto Rico, Venezuela, the United States and the Dominican Republic took part. Efraín Rodríguez, on board winning boat Doña Lucy, notched up 400 of the 700 points obtained by the crew, earning him the Top Angler title. Second place went to the crew of Blue Bird, with a total of 625 points, of which Carolina Mederos won 300, earning her third place in the Top Angler rankings and a special mention as the only female contestant in the fishing tournament. Third place in the event was won by the crew of Black Gold with 525 points, led by Mike McCarthy who received 300 points, giving him second place on the Top Angler list.

Para el plato fuerte, los huéspedes pudieron elegir entre un filete de chillo al grill y pechuga de guinea rellena de frijoles dominicanos y queso de hoja.

EN. Eden Roc at Cap Cana joined the Relais & Châteaux global initiative – in partnership with Ethic Ocean – in celebration of World Oceans Day on June 8th. In the spirit of the occasion the hotel served its guests a Caribbean-themed menu with an authentic and sustainable touch. The event was an expression of the hotel’s commitment to protecting marine diversity, supporting small-scale fishing, and contributing to local economic development by including fresh and healthy products in its menu. Lionfish was one of the central attractions. This delicacy was chosen in order to raise awareness of the need to reduce its numbers in Caribbean waters. An invasive species, it threatens the delicate ecological balance of our coral reef ecosystems. The five-course tasting menu, created by executive chef Gianluca Re Fraschini, opened with a chilled lionfish soup with shrimp from Sánchez in Samaná Bay, followed by a tartare of mahi-mahi from Miches served in a fresh coconut “shell” and ravioli with a tapioca and stone crab filling. The main course was a choice between grilled red snapper and breast of guinea hen stuffed with traditional Dominican beans and white cheese.

Este año la playa de Fundadores fue el escenario escogido por la Fundación Latiendo por Ti, que contó con la ayuda y cooperación del restaurante Api Beach. La actividad, en la que participaron unas 100 familias, incluyó la tradicional búsqueda de huevos, animación de juegos en la playa, juegos inflables, manualidades, globos, piscina, rifas y “pintacaritas”. Como en cada edición, los fondos recaudados se destinan a contribuir con las jornadas de cirugías cardiovasculares pediátricas en el Hospital Infantil Robert Reid Cabral. Las dos versiones anteriores de Easter Egg Hunt tuvieron lugar en Los Establos at Cap Cana, donde los niños disfrutaron del contacto con la naturaleza; este año los organizadores optaron por la diversión acuática y el carácter playero.

Easter Egg Hunt A Favorite with Kids EN. Every year our tiniest residents and visitors anxiously await the arrival of Easter, because as well as a few days of vacation and fun, it’s also time for the Cap Cana community’s exciting annual Easter Egg Hunt. This year the Heartbeat for You Foundation chose the Founders’ Beach as the setting for the event, with support and cooperation from the Api Beach restaurant. One hundred or so families took part in the traditional egg hunt, and the event also included entertainment and games on the beach, inflatables, crafts, balloons, a swimming pool, raffles and face-painting. Like every year, the funds raised will go toward pediatric heart surgery campaigns at the Robert Reid Cabral Children’s Hospital. The past two Easter Egg Hunts were held at Los Establos at Cap Cana, where the children enjoyed connecting with nature. This year the organizers decided to move it to the beach for water-based fun activities.

Law 171-07 on Special Incentives for Retirees and Rentiers from Overseas Sources

n atención al desarrollo de la inversión extranjera en República Dominicana fue creada la Ley 171-07 sobre Incentivos Especiales a los Pensionados y Rentistas de fuente extranjera. Esta ley define a los rentistas como aquellas personas que gozan de rentas estables, permanentes, cuyo capital principal sea generado o proveniente del exterior por cualquiera de las siguientes razones: (i) Depósitos y/o inversiones en bancos establecidos en el exterior; (ii) Remesas provenientes de instituciones bancarias o financieras del exterior; (iii) Inversiones en empresas establecidas en el exterior; (iv) Remesas originadas de bienes raíces; (v) Intereses percibidos de títulos emitidos en moneda extranjera generadas en el exterior, que se encuentren en instituciones financieras legalmente autorizadas para operar en República Dominicana; (vi) Beneficios obtenidos por inversiones en títulos emitidos en moneda extranjera y/o nacional, con el Es-

tado o sus instituciones, siempre y cuando el capital haya sido generado en el exterior y se realice el cambio de moneda en cualquiera de las instituciones financieras del país; (vii) Intereses, renta o dividendos de inversiones mobiliarias o inmobiliarias realizadas en República Dominicana, cuyo principal haya sido generado o devengado principalmente en el exterior. La Ley prevé importantes beneficios para los rentistas y jubilados, desde un proceso abreviado y expedito de gestión de residencia legal, hasta exenciones fiscales por adquisición de la primera vivienda, para préstamo hipotecario siempre y cuando las acreedoras sean instituciones financieras debidamente reguladas, sobre aranceles a la importación de los ajuares de la vivienda y la importación de vehículos para traslado a República Dominicana.

También la Ley prevé una exención del 50 % del impuesto a la propiedad inmobiliaria y la exención del 50 % del impuesto sobre ganancia de capital, siempre y cuando el rentista sea el accionista mayoritario de la compañía, que sea sujeto del pago de este impuesto y que dicha sociedad no se dedique a actividades comerciales o industriales, entre otros. A los fines de acogerse al régimen preferencial descrito anteriormente, el rentista deberá percibir una suma mensual correspondiente a dos mil dólares estadounidenses (US$2,000.00) o su equivalente en moneda nacional. Esta Ley ofrece importantes oportunidades para la captación de inversiones hacia República Dominicana y para la formalización de la situación migratoria en el caso de los extranjeros que deciden trasladar su residencia al país.

This law defines rentiers as people who receive a permanent regular income, whose main capital is generated or originates overseas for any of the following reasons: (i) Savings and/or investments in overseas banks; (ii) Remittances from overseas banking or financial institutions; (iii) Investments in overseas-based companies; (v) Interests earned from securities issued in foreign currency generated overseas and placed in financial institutions which are legally authorized to operate in the Dominican Republic; (vi) Profits obtained from investments in securities issued in foreign and/or national currency, with the State or any of its institutions, providing the capital has been generated overseas and the foreign exchange transaction

is carried out in any of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s financial institutions; (vi) Interests, income or dividends from properties or moveable assets held in the Dominican Republic, whose principal was generated or mainly originates overseas. The Law provides major benefits for rentiers and retirees, ranging from an abbreviated, faster-track residency application process to tax exemptions on the purchase of a first home, for mortgage loans as long as the lenders are duly regulated financial institutions, on import duties for the household items and on the importation of vehicles for shipping to the Dominican Republic.

a Estancia Infantil Pequeñas Cometas, localizada en la comunidad Nuevo Juanillo, próxima a Cap Cana, y que patrocina la Fundación Forjando un Futuro, celebró el 25 de mayo una emotiva actividad cultural con motivo del Día de las Madres. Participaron todos los alumnos de los cuatro cursos del centro: 50 niños entre 1 y 4 años de edad, dirigidos por sus profesoras, bajo la coordinación de la Lic. Mónica De la Rosa. “El circo” fue el tema del pequeño festival que deleitó a madres, padres y demás familiares que acudieron. Los números presentados fueron los siguientes: “Mi amiga es mamá”, interpretado por las niñas de 4 años; “Pequeño circo”, interpretado por niños y niñas de 1 y 2 años; “Había un circo”, a cargo de niños y niñas de 3 años; “Rugido de león”, interpretado por los niños de 4 años; “Mi música del circo”, por niñas de 3 y 4 años; y “Felicidades, mamá, en tu día”, canción en la que todos los niños de la Estancia unieron sus voces.

THE THEME OF THE MINIFESTIVAL WAS “THE CIRCUS” AND THE MOMS, DADS AND OTHER RELATIVES WHO ATTENDED ENJOYED THE SHOW. EN. The Little Kites Childcare Center in the community of Nuevo Juanillo, next door to Cap Cana, and sponsored by the Shaping the Future Foundation, held an exciting cultural event in celebration of Mother’s Day on May 25th. All of the children who attend the center took the stage: 50 toddlers between the ages of one and four, led by their teachers, and coordinated by Ms. Mónica De la Rosa. The theme of the mini-festival was “The Circus” and the moms, dads and other relatives who attended enjoyed the show. The children sang the following songs: “Mi amiga es mamá” (My Friend is Mom) by the 4-year old girls, “Pequeño circo” (Little Circus) by the 1 and 2-year olds, “Había un circo” (There was a Circus) by the 3-year olds, “Rugido de león” (Lion’s Roar) by the 4-year old boys, “Mi música del circo” (My Circus Music) by the 3 and 4-year old girls, and “Felicidades, mamá, en tu día” (Happy Mother’s Day, Mom), which all of the children who attend the childcare center sang together.

Poderosos contrastes Para los viajeros amantes de la literatura, Islandia siempre será el punto que Julio Verne definió como la entrada al centro de la Tierra, exactamente en el estratovolcán Snæfellsjökull, de 1.450 metros de altura –localizado al oeste del país, en la península de Snæfellnes–, dormido desde el siglo XIII. A esta estructura se le considera uno de los glaciares volcánicos más bellos del mundo. Lo más curioso es que el imaginativo escritor francés nunca puso pie en Islandia. Volcanes, campos de lava, glaciares, géiseres, termas y cascadas abundan en este territorio insular localizado en el extremo noroeste de Europa. En el valle de Haukadalur se encuentra la zona geotermal Geysir, o lo que podría ser lo mismo, “el padre de los géiseres”, de ahí el nombre de tan curioso fenómeno geológico. El más conocido, Strokkur, eclosiona aproximadamente cada cinco minutos y puede alcanzar 20 metros de altura. Con sus 32 metros, la cascada de Gullfoss, en el cañón del río Hvitá, es uno de los monumentos naturales más visitados de Islandia, por su belleza y la cercanía con la capital. Los contrastes son más fuertes en Fimmvorduhals, un terreno de glaciares en el que se abren fisuras de las que brota lava que convierte la nieve en vapor. Este espectáculo forma parte de una de las rutas a pie más populares de la isla porque muestra la constante rivalidad entre el fuego y el hielo. EN. Strong contrasts For literature-loving travelers, Iceland will always be the place that Jules Verne described as the entrance to the center of the Earth. The exact spot is inside the Snæfellsjökull stratovolcano, which rises to a height of 1,450 meters, in the west of the country in the Snæfellnes peninsula and dormant since the 13th century. It is considered one of the most spectacular volcanic glaciers in the world. Curiously enough, the visionary French author never set foot in Iceland. Volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers, geysers, thermal pools and waterfalls are common across this island in the far northwest of Europe. It covers an area of 103,000 km2 with around 334,000 inhabitants – more than a third of whom live in the capital, giving us an idea of just how remote and unspoiled these vast natural spaces must be. Who can resist getting lost for a while in a landscape straight out of science fiction and almost untouched by humans? The Golden Circle – which includes the Thingvellir National Park, the Haukadalur valley and the Gullfoss waterfall – tops the list for places to visit. Thingvellir, where the Vikings founded their parliament in 930 AD is the country’s leading historical site. Visitors to the park can also marvel at the seven-meter wide rift in the earth caused by the separation

of the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The Haukadalur valley is home to the Geysir geothermal area, also known as the “father of geysers,” because it gave its name to this fascinating geological phenomenon. The most famous geyser, Strokkur, spouts every five minutes or so, reaching a height of up to 20 meters. The 32-meter high Gullfoss waterfall in the Hvitá river canyon is one of the country’s most popular natural monuments for its beauty and proximity to the capital. The contrasts are even more dramatic in Fimmvorduhals, a land of glaciers where fissures appear in the earth and eject lava that turns snow into steam. This spectacle, an eternal battle between fire and ice, draws scores of visitors to one of the island’s most popular hiking routes. This is also the trail for reaching the amazing Skogafoss waterfall. The natural attractions in this amazing destination are endless; to list them all would take several pages. For a quick overview, in Iceland you can descend into a volcano’s magma chamber. This unforgettable adventure can be experienced in Thrihnukagigur, which has been dormant for 4,000 years. One place most people have heard of is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal spa on the Reykjanes peninsula, with its milky blue waters, temperatures ranging from 37°C to 40°C, and rich in silica, minerals and algae.

A pesar de ser la capital, Reikiavik es una ciudad bastante pequeña pero con una activa vida cultural y social; no en vano los islandeses figuran entre los más felices del mundo. Dos o tres días bastan para conocerla, así puede concentrarse en los atractivos naturales del país. The city’s highest building is Hallgrímskirkja (73 meters), a Lutheran church that looks like a spaceship, visible from a 20-kilometer radius. Its quirky architecture is inspired by the basaltic lava flows typical of the island. Opposite the church is a statue of Leif Eriksson (son of Erik the Red), believed to be the first European to set foot on the American continent, in 1000 AD, almost 500 years before Christopher Columbus. Perlan, a pearl-shaped building with an observation deck for the best views of the city, sits atop Öskjuhlíð Hill. This architectural gem is also home to a cultural center and a hot water storage tank, as well as a revolving restaurant. The Saga Museum, also part of the complex, showcases Iceland’s history from the medieval sagas to current times. Weather permitting, you can walk or cycle down the slope and take a dip in Nauthólsvík beach.
