“CRACK” The Accidental art on Typefaces design
Asst.Prof. Nattanan Naewmalee
Department of VISUAL COMMUNICATION DESIGN. Albert Laurence School of Communication Arts, Assumption University
Background or significant of the project
The Typefaces design ‘CRACK’ was inspired by my interest in the trace, damaging, crack of several items which are appealing and look beautiful in their imperfection, leading to the creativity of this font set. The set is comprised of the alphabet letter A-Z and number 0-9, reminding the accidental or unremarkable happening. I found that the scratching trace occurring at things including the accidental crash tend to imply the negative feeling among people. It represents the damage or what we need to fix. From my point of view, these scratches may positively be the medium telling good story or some creative things as well.

strong. The book narrates about the observation and imagination from the trace the author found from his photos of surrounding objects. It inspired me of the beauty and creativity that could happen from imagination and observation of the past traces, occurring from the accidental action but mean a lot more.
Modern regarding the existence of things, creating by human and his imagination. The sample of Happening Art presenting the concept about trace on the item by human creation. It shows the beauty from damaging or imperfection than the completion.

The mentioned concept related to the idea of Happening Art which is one of the artistry concepts in 1958. The website www. theartstory.org defines that it is “a main component of Happenings was the involvement of the viewer. Each instance a Happening occurred the viewer was used to add in an element of chance so, every time a piece was performed or exhibited it would never be the same as the previous time. Unlike preceding works of art which were, by definition, static, Happenings could evolve and provide a unique encounter for each individual who partook in the experience.” Moreover, The Happenning Art is the result the combination between Futurists and Dadaists in the 1910s and 1920s came to fruition with the performance art movements, one branch of which was referred to as Happenings. All of these are the fundamental concepts of Post 3
the creator to pick them up to communicate in his artwork in the future.
Project Objective 1. Present the Display type showing the imperfection feeling and the subjectively accidental cracks 2. Develop the combination of art concept to the graphic design and typefaces design
Concept CRACK is the typefaces design for Display type presenting the possibility of cracks, damages, or tearing traces from both natural happening and human action via the subjective font type, displaying emotion of imperfection.

Process of art or design works 1. Study the format of scratch and crack in several items i.e. mirror, paper, metal, wood, and rock and then analyze the cracking format of each for setting the criteria of font design via internet sources. The criteria for categorizing the mood and tone in design are as below; A. Crack from inattention to refine B. The combination of format such as curve, sharp, and flat line C. Remain the left over pieces from cracks or the spreading big and small pieces D. The thunder type crack or the big crack at the beginning and spreading further E. Crossing type crack F. The twist or bend crack to create the completion of the crack

2. Study the format of the alphabet A-Z and number 0-9 from the font Myriad Pro (San- Serif without head) for further font development 3. Experiment by adjusting the cracks to Vector graphic and turn the graphic element to create the font with Tracing Options in Ilustrator, turning photo to graphic element.
4. Develop the alphabet A- Z and 0-9 by criteria and combine with the Vector graphic of cracks

Knowledge after finished produce art or design works
After creating this font set, I have found some interesting and useful details as below:
1. Emotion or experience can inspire and turn out to be a good set of font design and other artworks 2. The concept of Heppening Art can be related to the idea of Accidental art and develop further to other art design, not only the Type design. 3. From the study of trace from secondary data, it leads to the criteria of crack types which can be divided according to mood and tone which can be used in other artworks.
