Writing on Motions

Background or Significant of the project Relationship between texts and images has always been at the very core of graphic design study. When the images started to move with the invention of motion pictures, conventional wisdom goes that one should apply the same typography rules for print to the moving screen. During the silent films era, this was a obvious. Text that shows dialogue are called “intertitle, and they do not occupy the same space as the footage. In modern movies, even though adding text onto the footage is very easy, moving picture and text are often kept separated by the filmmakers. Title sequence of a movie for example, are commonly outsourced to outside studios. So a director of the film may not have to know anything about typography. Writing on Motions proposed a new set of guidelines for managing text in film. This is an attempt to encourage rethinking of applying typographic rules for time-based medium such as film and broadcasting. How does the rules change? What can be adjusted? Learning how to apply typography with footage is becoming even more important because of social media. Videos showing up on the newsfeed of instagram and facebook often have texts in them. This is because when people browse on the smart phone, the audio would not be automatically turned on. Using text has become a more efficient way of catching the attention of users who are just scrolling through the newsfeed. Typography is taught specifically to those who studied graphic design. Film production curriculum would likely not have typography in their curriculum. It used to be that all fine arts field must start with basic knowledge of drawing and designing, but as more specialized program are formed, more and more people skipped the essential foundation knowledge. Nowadays we have generations of filmmakers who never have to learn how to draw draw, art history or typography.

Project Objective

The main objective of this creative work project is to create a teaching video of how to manage informations that are presented in text with moving pictures. The video will be used in an assignment with students studying digital media and films. The goal is for them to use the video as a guideline in creating videos that incorporate text in an effective way. Typography is a very deep subject. The video will only attempt to be a very basic guide for filmmakers, which they can then apply this knowledge by consulting with a trained designer in their crew should they have one. They can also use It as a starting point for their understanding of typeface designa nd layout which can be expanded upon by further readings or taking workshop classes on typography for print media.

1.6 Using the video to teach in class and receive feedback from students, both verbally, and also through the utlilzation of text in their homework assignment.

Material and techniques of Design or Art works

Green screen shot with P2 camera. Other shots were filmed by Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and Canon 60D. Software used was Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effect.

Concept

-Tutorial video- The video will be in a form of a guidelines tutorial, but not the same as the ones teaching people how to use software. It Is not a howto video but instead a suggestion for the best way to communicate through text with moving pictures. All the examples will be filmed by the artist, with footage from the artist’s old work.

Process of Design or Art works

1.1 Created several videos that demonstrate use of text on moving pictures. This first step is crucial in establishing the researcher/ content creator to have experienced utilizing text in videos before. This is not to say that the researcher/content creator himself is an expert, just an active practioner. 1.2 Gathered information from teaching materials about typography 1.3 Wrote the script based on previous lectures with content from the author’s own experiencee and also existing texts. 1.4 Recorded the voice over narration in CA sound studio. 1.5 Filming and designing visuals that matched with the audio. 3

Knowledge after finished produce art or design works

Even in graphic design studies, most students do not know the Importance of typography until they start learning about them. So for media and production students who normally can just avoid having to deal with text their entire career, may not be too enthusiastic about learning them. But those who have acquired the knoweldge have one more option to use in case if they have problems with finding narrators who can speak fluently. Typography Is something that can be explored very deeply. It Is hard to not lose track of the information you want to convey that directly related to using typo graphy on moving images. It is also difficult that the subject require some prior knowledge of both typography and filmmaking. The challenge is to find a way to balance not confusing beginners and students while containing enough helpful content for professionals. 5
