Adult Intermediate 7.00pm to 8.15pm For those who have mastered the Ballroom and Latin basics, this class helps you work on your floor-craft and develops your dancing skills further. We also introduce the Viennese Waltz and add new figures to dances you already know. There will be a 15mins troubleshooting session at the end of the class so you can ask questions and work through any issues you may have. £38.50 for half a term or £6.00 per session.

Adult Improvers 8.00pm to 9.15pm This class continues to increase your confidence on the dance floor in Waltz, Quickstep, Foxtrot, Paso, Cha Cha Cha and Jive and introduces you to Samba, Rumba and the Viennese Waltz. If you are returning to dance after a break, this is the perfect class to refresh your memory. There will be a 15mins troubleshooting session at the beginning of the class so you can ask questions and work through any issues you may have.

During the 14-week term there will be the opportunity to put your hard work into practice, improve your social dancing skills and have fun in two informal dances. Drinks are available. £6.00 per dance or included in the £38.50 package

As he delves further into a world where he takes no responsibility for his actions - and introduces one of his patients to the same idea - mayhem ensues and society’s rules start to become twisted… Based on Luke Rhinehart’s novel ‘The Dice Man’, this is a quirky combination of dialogue and imaginative physical theatre performed by two extraordinary actors, Gavin Robertson and Nicholas Collett.

Famously filmed with Anthony Quinn as Zorba, this is the novel that made Kazantzakis’ name famous outside Greece. Born in Heraklion in Crete, Kazantzakis wrote prolifically throughout his life and ‘Zorba the Greek’ is based on his own experience of mining lignite in the Greek ‘Mani’. It is a novel celebrating friendship, love, dance and the sheer joy of life itself. Come and enjoy the book that captures the essence of Crete and which nearly won Kazantzakis the Nobel Prize, had the Greek Church not objected.

and The Bad Shepherds Wednesday 21 October • Punk Folk • 7.30pm The Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Jam and The Stranglers were the soundtrack to ‘Young Ones’ star Ade Edmondson’s teenage years, and like thousands of teenagers, he was rather fond of playing them at home on his acoustic guitar. Cut forward to 2007, after a boozy pre-Christmas lunch in Soho, Ade ‘accidentally’ bought a mandolin, worked out a few chords and played through his old favourites. To his surprise, it sounded pretty interesting… but what it really needed were some brilliant folk musicians. Enter Martin Allcock, multi-instrumentalist best known for playing guitar with Fairport Convention, Troy Donockley, composer, arranger, musician and leading virtuoso of the Uilleann Pipes and Andy Dinan, two-times winner of the ‘All-Ireland Fiddle Championship’ and The Bad Shepherds were born. This smash-hit adaptation of Louis de Bernières’ best-selling novel about love, death and the sweetness of life, set in wartime Cephalonia, is a show that you can’t help fall in love with.

Karen Sharp and Robert Fowler have joined forces to recreate the fantastic sound of two giants of the tenor saxophone, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. Their musical personalities, both separately and in tandem, make them ideally suited to the roles. Robert has been quietly but impressively plying his trade over the years, including stints with The Charleston Chasers, The BBC Big Band, Bryan Ferry and Humphrey Lyttelton. He has released two albums under his own name. Karen first came to prominence with ‘Humph’ and since then has led her own quintet with which she has recorded three CDs. In 2007 they got together to play some of the Al and Zoot charts and do a few gigs. Come and enjoy a special lecture for Christmas on Carroll’s marvellous fantasy of what Alice found when she fell down the rabbit hole. Originally written for his child-friend, Alice Liddell, this small book made Carroll (or Reverend Charles Dodgson as he was otherwise known) the most famous children’s writer of his day. As a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford, many of the settings of this book are actually in and around his Oxford College. ‘On the Rocks’ by George Bernard Shaw Michael Friend Productions Friday 4 December • Drama • 7.30pm ‘This is not the time to talk about economic difficulties’, says the Prime Minister, ‘We are up to the neck in them.’ Shaw’s satirical comedy takes us to the centre of the political madhouse - the Cabinet Room at No. 10 Downing Street. The date is 1933 but ‘On the Rocks’ could well describe the current situation in 2009 – unemployment is at an all time high, the nation’s finances are in free fall and there is no prosperity to lull the electorate into a passive state of quiet agreement. Tensions run high throughout between the political man, the thinking man and the man with a will to be a leader. Meanwhile, the government seeks to quell growing unrest rather than root out the cause of it. Perhaps the most interesting question the play raises is one we would all like to know the answer to: ‘What qualities are required to be an effective leader?’

To join, all you need to do is show up at the start of the class you’re interested in and register. Alternatively, you can have a chat with the workshop leader and sit in for a week to see if it’s the class for you. So why not try something new this season?

Mondays in term time - 10.30am – 11.30am 2 – 5yrs This workshop is for both children and their parents/ carers. The aim is to build skills and confidence in music making and give children the opportunity to explore different instruments and experience rhythm and dynamics.

The impressive Victorian clock tower of the Guildhall Arts Centre on St Peter’s Hill, right in the centre of town, serves as an obvious point of reference to anyone visiting the centre.

The Guildhall Theatre can seat up to 210 people and hosts performances, workshop, lectures and seminars throughout the year. The theatre is equipped with professional quality sound and lighting systems, an excellent upright piano, cinema screen and two fully fitted dressing rooms with adjoining showers and toilets.
