Company Gavin Robertson
Breakthrough Productions
Wednesday 23 September • Drama • 7.30pm
Friday 18 September • Variety • 7.30pm
Darkly comic, tongue-in-cheek and highly imaginative, ‘The Six-Sided Man’ centres on a psychiatrist’s idea that every decision should be made by the roll of a dice.
Breakthrough Productions - Join young talent from in and around Grantham for a collection of your favourite songs that encapsulate the spirit of remembrance.
As he delves further into a world where he takes no responsibility for his actions - and introduces one of his patients to the same idea - mayhem ensues and society’s rules start to become twisted… Based on Luke Rhinehart’s novel ‘The Dice Man’, this is a quirky combination of dialogue and imaginative physical theatre performed by two extraordinary actors, Gavin Robertson and Nicholas Collett.
Famously filmed with Anthony Quinn as Zorba, this is the novel that made Kazantzakis’ name famous outside Greece. Born in Heraklion in Crete, Kazantzakis wrote prolifically throughout his life and ‘Zorba the Greek’ is based on his own experience of mining lignite in the Greek ‘Mani’. It is a novel celebrating friendship, love, dance and the sheer joy of life itself. Come and enjoy the book that captures the essence of Crete and which nearly won Kazantzakis the Nobel Prize, had the Greek Church not objected.

To his surprise, it sounded pretty interesting… but what it really needed were some brilliant folk musicians. Lunchtime John Steinbeck’s ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ Thursday 5 November • Talk • 12 noon
John Steinbeck ‘s ‘The Grapes of Wrath’ is arguably the greatest novel about the American depression ever written. Steinbeck grew up in the Salinas Valley in California where he witnessed the immense tragedy of the dirt farmers of the Mid-West being lured from their dying farms to the promise of plenty in California. This novel made a huge difference to American public opinion and contributed to his getting the Nobel Prize in 1962. Out of terrible suffering Stienbeck created an epic with unforgettable characters.
Neil Innes Thursday 5 November • Music / Comedy • 7.30pm ‘A People’s Guide to World Domination’ is a wryly humorous one-man show, spiced with hot topics of the day and anecdotes from ‘the life and times’ of Neil Innes. Best known for his collaborative work with ‘Monty Python’, the ‘Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band’, ‘The Ruttles’ and his TV show for BBC2, ‘The Innes Book of Records’ - classic British eccentricity set to music – much of Neil Innes songs have become cult classics and big hits on YouTube. His solo shows are packed with sharp observations and songs that celebrate the absurdities of modern existence. If you’ve seen him before, you’re already booking and if not, give this show a try, you won’t leave disappointed. £12.00 / £10.00 concessions
Find out how ‘master of all trades’ Jonathan Miller carved out successful careers as a satirist, theatre and opera director, medical consultant, sculptor and writer in this intimate insight into the mind of an intellectual icon. In 1961 four graduates - Peter Cook, Dudley Moore, Alan Bennett and trainee neurologist, Jonathan Miller - sparked a satire boom that changed the nature of comedy forever. In the following years, Sir Jonathan has arguably eclipsed his former colleagues in the breadth and depth of his careers, presenting programmes on science and medicine, directing opera, producing stage works, lecturing, writing and sculpting. His ability to flit between careers has been the source of amusement, admiration and, on occasion, irritation. This is your chance to find out what makes him tick.
Eric’s been swindling the Social for years, pocketing thousands from the government. On paper, his house holds an army of fictitious relatives, lodgers and ailments, but a knock at the door is about to add someone else - a fraud inspector. The wife knows nothing. The lodger knows too much. He’d better think fast... This is farce, pure and simple. There are lies and more lies, people getting knocked out, men without their trousers, mis-timings, mistaken identities, cross dressing and dead bodies. If comedy is your thing then you’ll love every nuance, twist and turn in Michael Cooney’s tale that’ll have you laughing from start to finish.
‘Mad About The Musicals’ return to the Guildhall this season with an award-winning spectacular 2009 show. Captain Corelli’s Mandolin
Brandy and Beer
Mike Maran Tuesday 24 November • Music / Storytelling • 7.30pm
Karen Sharp and Robert Fowler Quintet Saturday 21 November • Jazz • 7.30pm
This smash-hit adaptation of Louis de Bernières’ best-selling novel about love, death and the sweetness of life, set in wartime Cephalonia, is a show that you can’t help fall in love with.
Karen Sharp and Robert Fowler have joined forces to recreate the fantastic sound of two giants of the tenor saxophone, Al Cohn and Zoot Sims. Their musical personalities, both separately and in tandem, make them ideally suited to the roles. Robert has been quietly but impressively plying his trade over the years, including stints with The Charleston Chasers, The BBC Big Band, Bryan Ferry and Humphrey Lyttelton. He has released two albums under his own name. Karen first came to prominence with ‘Humph’ and since then has led her own quintet with which she has recorded three CDs. In 2007 they got together to play some of the Al and Zoot charts and do a few gigs. What began as a bit of fun took on a life of its own and ‘Brandy and Beer’ has become a popular fixture in clubs and music festivals around the UK. £12.00 / £10.00 concessions
With Alison Stephens on mandolin and Anne Evans on piano, Mike Maran brings this epic to the stage with two chickens, two aubergines, three puppets, a tuba, a motorbike, some old photographs, a walking stick and a goat. It is modest in scale and style, without any pretence at glossy presentation, and yet every audience that has ever seen this show adores it, from the international crowd at Valvona & Crolla during last year’s Fringe, to small venues like the Guildhall. As war breaks over Cephalonia, the story’s hero Doctor Iannis says ‘we must care for each other more than we care for ideas’. The secret of this show’s success is that it not only articulates that feeling, but somehow embodies it. £9.00 / £7.00 concessions
Bob Brozman Thursday 26 November • Acoustic Guitar • 7.30pm Redefining musical diversity worldwide, Bob Brozman is a remarkably prolific artist whose wit, energy and musical technique combine powerfully to create an unforgettable live performance. A master of slide, finger-style and percussive guitar, Bob’s exhilarating show spans the global and musical spectrum and keeps audiences enthralled with his infectious energy. His rhythmic dexterity resonates with elements of blues, jazz, Gypsy swing, calypso, sega, hip-hop and ska beats and his chords and harmonies articulate an acute blend of timbres from Hawaiian, Indian, African, Japanese/Okinawan, Caribbean, and American roots blues.
Independent
Ballet Wales
Midsummer Night’s Dream Friday 27 November • Dance • 8.00pm Award Winning Independent Ballet Wales return to the Guildhall with a breathtaking version of one of Shakespeare’s most magical plays. Oberon, King of the Fairies, his queen Titania and Puck, the mischievous messenger, inhabit the supernatural fairy kingdom; Bottom and his band of misfits practise for their infamous play ‘Pyramus and Thisbe’ while lovers, Lysander and Hermia and Demetrius and Helena, are caught in a thrilling web of mistaken identity and emotional confusion. This production features Mendelssohn’s joyous music, expansive choreography by artistic director Darius James and critically acclaimed costumes by designer Yvonne Greenleaf which, combined with exquisite dance, conjure up a ‘topsy-turvy’ world of magic, mystery and mayhem.
Cinderella Kids Star Academy Saturday 28 November • Musical 3.00pm & 5.00pm The timeless fairy tale meets the magic of Disney in this adaptation of the treasured animated film. Poor Cinderella is endlessly mistreated by her wicked stepmother and stepsisters, and denied a chance to go to the Royal Ball. With a little help from her mice friends, and a lot of help from her Fairy Godmother, Cinderella goes to the ball, meets the Prince, and falls in love! With a beautiful score including “A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and the classic “BibbidiBobbidi-Boo,” this musical will charm its way into your heart, and remind you that dreams really can come true. £5.50

Literature at
Lunchtime Lewis Carroll’s ‘Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland’ Thursday 3 December • Talk • 12 noon
Come and enjoy a special lecture for Christmas on Carroll’s marvellous fantasy of what Alice found when she fell down the rabbit hole. Originally written for his child-friend, Alice Liddell, this small book made Carroll (or Reverend Charles Dodgson as he was otherwise known) the most famous children’s writer of his day. As a lecturer in mathematics at Oxford, many of the settings of this book are actually in and around his Oxford College. Come and find what made Alice and the White Rabbit’s watch tick! £5.00 / £4.50 concessions
‘On the Rocks’ by George Bernard Shaw Michael Friend Productions Friday 4 December • Drama • 7.30pm ‘This is not the time to talk about economic difficulties’, says the Prime Minister, ‘We are up to the neck in them.’ Shaw’s satirical comedy takes us to the centre of the political madhouse - the Cabinet Room at No. 10 Downing Street. The date is 1933 but ‘On the Rocks’ could well describe the current situation in 2009 – unemployment is at an all time high, the nation’s finances are in free fall and there is no prosperity to lull the electorate into a passive state of quiet agreement. Tensions run high throughout between the political man, the thinking man and the man with a will to be a leader. Meanwhile, the government seeks to quell growing unrest rather than root out the cause of it. Perhaps the most interesting question the play raises is one we would all like to know the answer to: ‘What qualities are required to be an effective leader?’
The Liberty Tree Hugh Lupton & Nick Hennessey Saturday 5 December Music & Storytelling • 7.30pm Master storytellers Hugh Lupton and Nick Hennessy weave a narrative adventure that delves into tales of lawlessness and liberty and the legend of Robin Hood. Hugh Lupton, an acclaimed storyteller of international repute, and Nick Hennessey, a compelling storyteller and harpist, expertly draw their audience into a magical world of myth and legend. The pair journey back into the secret, dappled, winding ways of Sherwood forest and our murky past to recount stories of dissent — from Robin Hood and his band of merry men to the revolutionary deeds of Thomas Paine and his pioneering Rights of Man. Lupton and Hennessy’s performance, embellished with song and recital, reignites England’s lost oral-history tradition. £10.00 / £8.00 concessions
