‘The Guildhall Arts Centre….. gets a thumbs up!’ Welcome back to another packed season of drama, comedy, talks, live music, films, workshops and children’s events at the Guildhall Arts Centre. What makes the Guildhall Arts Centre so special?
Every year we strive to bring you the best in entertainment and make your experience of the Arts enjoyable and great value for money. However, the only way for us to find out ‘What’s good about the Arts Centre?’ is to ask you, which we did this spring, in the form of a customer satisfaction survey.*
Here are some of your comments:
• 99% of you said you were happy with what we’re doing • Over 5000 young people and adults came to see Jack & The Beanstalk last Christmas • Nearly 100 people started to learn to ballroom dance in January this year • There are over 30 events each year designed specifically for vulnerable people • After 18 years of wear and tear, the theatre seats are being re-upholstered ready for another busy Autumn season • Last year, 3,204 of you bought 9,589 tickets for 68 professional productions • Last year we also provided a home to seven local amateur companies and 1,128 of you came to see the 10 productions they staged • 784 children and young people were involved in Arts workshops and events designed especially for them
“A good meeting place and great entertainment.” “It’s bringing the arts to Grantham” “It’s professional but cosy” “It’s great to have a theatre in the town” “It has a friendly atmosphere” Did you know that the Arts Centre is part of Cultural Services provided by South Kesteven District Council and that we operate with just 5 full time staff and 5 part time staff including Cathie, Jo and Laura in the box office? And much of what we do is down to the invaluable help of our 80 volunteers – on front of house duty and behind the scenes in the theatre.
None of this would be possible without you. Thank-you for your continued support! David Popple Head of Cultural Services - South Kesteven District Council * For the complete survey results, check out our website: www.guildhallartscentre.com

Grantham Operatic Society
F Scott Fitzgerald’s ‘The Great Gatsby’ Thursday 2 October • Talk • 12 noon
Wednesday 24 to Saturday 27 September • Musical • 7.30pm
This is Fitzgerald’s most famous novel, and while it seems to deal with a glittering society obsessed with money and status, it charts the deep disillusion of post - war America.
This show tells the story of the famous Gilbert and Sullivan Partnership: the association with D’Oyly Carte, the mounting success, the divergences of temperament and conflicting ambitions. We look at the troubles caused by Gilbert’s obsessions and Sullivan’s ill health and lavish social lifestyle, together with many other episodes including the famous tragiccomic quarrel over a new carpet for the theatre. Musical excerpts from the well-known operas are woven into the story together with social and press comments.
Very much topical today, in a world obsessed with ‘lifestyle’, the chronicle of the tragic Gatsby’s pursuit of his dream takes us into the eternal problem of the conflict between reality and illusion.

Liverpool Comedian of the Year Chris Cairns specialises in topical gags that cover everything from Liverpool’s Capital of Culture award, the joys of childbirth and what passes for real romance in Toxteth. Tony Vino seamlessly mixes observational humour with audience interaction and quick witted responses. His life and interests are wide ranging and so is his material. Gary Delaney, co-writer of Ivan Brackenbury’s Hospital Radio Roadshow, is a razor sharp one-liner comedian who is widely regarded as being the most quotable comic on the circuit. Mundo Jazz, a spoof world music band, are on stage to spread words of love and racial equality in what can only be described as a Latino version of ‘Spinal Tap’.
The Drowned World is a spine tingling story of love, sexual desire, revolution and betrayal set against an Orwellian landscape that strikes a chord in today’s society. Gary Owen’s play paints a world where individualism - portrayed as beauty - is viciously eradicated by a totalitarian state and a society where image is more important to the ambitious politician than sincere policies. A daring fusion of poetic prose and shocking realism combine in The Drowned World which is the first production for new Midlands based touring company, Sleeping Dogs.

Workshops
Grantham Occasional Orchestra Workshops Meets first Saturday of every month
We’ve got a great range of workshops here at the Guildhall to suit all ages and tastes.
From 9.30am to 12.30pm £7.00
Whether you want to learn a new skill, practise existing skills with like-minded people, get together socially over a common interest or just have some fun - we’ve got it covered!
All you need is your instrument and a music stand to join this dedicated and friendly group of amateur musicians who meet to enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra.
To join, all you need to do is show up at the start of the class you’re interested in and register. Alternatively, you can have a chat with the workshop leader and sit in for a week to see if it’s the class for you.
The emphasis on the group is very much on fun! (Over 16s)
