The Guildhall Arts Centre looks forward to getting more children involved in the arts… Fall in VAT kick starts community engagement fund As all tickets to professional shows include VAT, the impact of the recent 2.5% fall in VAT rates has meant we can use the benefits of this to start a ‘Community Arts Engagement Fund’. This means, in future, we can offer arts experiences to school children in our community, at a discounted rate or even for free! In this way, children not previously involved in the arts outside school have the opportunity to experience a workshop or show at low cost, or no cost at all. We hope we’ve made the right decision but let us know what you think..!
Have your say… Last spring we conducted a customer satisfaction survey to find out what you thought about the service we provide. In response to that, we took your comments on board, made a few changes and tried to keep some things the same… • 61% of you said our live events were good value for money so, despite rising costs, we’ve tried to keep our prices affordable, without compromising on quality • 85% of you said our workshops were good value for money so this season, we’ve put even more on We like to keep in touch so we’ll be conducting another customer satisfaction survey this season. What’s coming up next season? Next season sees the return of the Guildhall’s music festival with a real mix of music genres this time under the banner ‘Acoustic Roots ‘n’ Blues. They’ll be a bit of jazz, a bit of blues, folk, roots and a real international flavour with bands from the USA, Africa and Spain as well as the UK. See page 21 for highlights. Paul and Dave introduce their personal and individual approach to this dynamic, rootsy and exhilarating set of Country Blues. Paul’s career is well charted - from heartthrob singer with Manfred Mann to his work as a DJ presenting BBC Radio 2’s ‘Rhythm and Blues Show’ and the ‘Jazz FM’ programme. Dave’s career path is no less illustrious. It’s Shaun’s wish during the show to raise awareness of what he calls ‘the other world’ – a message he demonstrates through the level of information given to audience members including full names, areas or roads of residence and even house numbers. The Jive Aces’ unique sound returns to the Guildhall with a combination of their own tunes, in true swing style, as well as fresh arrangements of songs by Louis Prima (Just a Gigolo), Louis Jordan (Five Guys Named Mo), Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher), Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong.
After the success of ‘Potted Potter’, double act Dan and Jeff return with a new compressed caper in search of talking parrots and mysterious buried treasure in ‘Potted Pirates’. This time they’re swapping wizards for walking the plank and trading Hogwarts for the high seas. Including tall tales of Long John Silver and Blackbeard - plus a couple of notorious lady pirates – Dan and Jeff promise a full-scale re-enactment of the Spanish Armada, featuring thirty actors in full costume. Literature at Lunchtime Boris Pasternak’s ‘Dr Zhivago’
Thursday 5 March • Talk • 12 noon This novel by the multi-talented Pasternak is primarily a poet’s novel and was banned in the USSR. Describing the Russian Revolution as it impinged on one individual, a doctor and a poet, it was famously filmed with Omar Sharif as Zhivago and is the book by which Pasternak is best known in the West. His clear disillusion with Communism led him to be expelled from the Soviet Writers’ Union and meant he could not accept the 1958 Nobel Prize which he so thoroughly deserved. The leading man tries to get the stubborn director to change his mind but to no avail. In turn, the star cast as the ‘Pretty Lady’ proves a problem for the director - she’s married to the man stumping up the money for the show who’s in love with someone else. Sounds complicated? Well it all makes sense as the story unfolds and a great show for all the family.

There they fall in love with the railway and many adventures follow but still the mystery remains - where is ‘Father’ and will he ever return? Winners of the 2005 BBC National Folk Award, fiddler Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham are two of the most celebrated musicians on the Scottish traditional scene. They began working together in 1988 when both were already renowned for their previous accomplishments. Bain was a founding member of the Boys of the Lough, a group whose repertoire includes both Scottish and Irish influences and Cunningham became a member of the infamous Silly Wizard at the age of sixteen, launching a prolific and diverse musical career. The duo first worked together on a television series in 1988, and embarked on their first tour shortly after. They were so well-received that they have been touring together ever since. Their two previous duo recordings, The Pearl (1996) and The Ruby (1998), have met with high acclaim.

With over twenty albums and fourteen hit singles, including Number ones:Yeh Yeh, Getaway and The Ballad of Bonnie and Clyde, Georgie Fame’s popularity continues to go from strength to strength. Add to this a long list of collaborations with some of music’s most famous names: Muddy Waters, Gene Vincent, Bill Wyman, Eric Clapton and Van Morrison, amongst many others, and in Georgie Fame you have bona fide Musical Legend! We’ve got a great range of workshops here at the Guildhall to suit all ages and tastes.

Whether you want to learn a new skill, practise existing skills with like-minded people, get together socially over a common interest or just have some fun - we’ve got it covered!
All you need is your instrument and a music stand to join this dedicated and friendly group of amateur musicians who meet to enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra.
To join, all you need to do is show up at the start of the class you’re interested in and register. Alternatively, you can have a chat with the workshop leader and sit in for a week to see if it’s the class for you.
The emphasis on the group is very much on fun! (Over 16s)

First Notes With SoundLINCS
Mondays in term time 10.30am – 11.30am £0.50 per child This workshop is taken by SoundLINCS - Lincolnshire’s Music Development Agency and involves both children and parents/carers. The aim of the workshop is to build skills and confidence in music making. This fun activity gives children, between the ages of two and five, the opportunity to be involved in active learning where they will be introduced to different instruments and have the chance to explore rhythm and dynamics. Starts Monday 5 January You’ve seen the stars do it on Strictly Come Dancing, now it’s your turn! Learn to dance the basic steps to the Waltz, Quickstep, Cha, Cha, Cha, Tango, Jive and many more. The new class will start at 9.00pm and finish at 10.00pm. You are welcome to come with a partner, on your own or with friends to this relaxed, fun class taught by our resident dance teacher, Ann Gibbons, and tutors from her school of dance. Watch out for social dances throughout the year – they’re a great opportunity to practise your steps! The impressive Victorian clock tower of the Guildhall Arts Centre on St Peter’s Hill, right in the centre of town, serves as an obvious point of reference to anyone visiting the centre. Buffet lunches are available from our in-house café from just £3.00 a head and there is a professional kitchen and a range of support equipment available for hire. The venue is accessible to wheelchair users with a lift to the first and second floors and has disabled facilities. Anyone requiring assistance should inform the venue prior to the visit and we will be more than happy to help. Perfect for wedding receptions, parties and informal performances, the Ballroom can hold up to 200 people and seat 100. With a small stage, dance floor, professional kitchen for your chosen caterer, licensed bar and some sound and lighting equipment available, the Ballroom is a great venue with lots to offer. Situated on the second floor with lift access, the Ballroom is also ideal for everything from sales meetings to seminars.

The Guildhall Theatre can seat up to 210 people and hosts performances, workshops, lectures and seminars throughout the year.
