The Guildhall Arts Centre looks forward to getting more children involved in the arts… Fall in VAT kick starts community engagement fund As all tickets to professional shows include VAT, the impact of the recent 2.5% fall in VAT rates has meant we can use the benefits of this to start a ‘Community Arts Engagement Fund’. This means, in future, we can offer arts experiences to school children in our community, at a discounted rate or even for free! In this way, children not previously involved in the arts outside school have the opportunity to experience a workshop or show at low cost, or no cost at all. We hope we’ve made the right decision but let us know what you think..!

Have your say… Last spring we conducted a customer satisfaction survey to find out what you thought about the service we provide. In response to that, we took your comments on board, made a few changes and tried to keep some things the same… • 61% of you said our live events were good value for money so, despite rising costs, we’ve tried to keep our prices affordable, without compromising on quality • 85% of you said our workshops were good value for money so this season, we’ve put even more on We like to keep in touch so we’ll be conducting another customer satisfaction survey this season. If you want to have your say, please fill in one of our questionnaires and hand it in. Your views count!

What’s coming up next season? Next season sees the return of the Guildhall’s music festival with a real mix of music genres this time under the banner ‘Acoustic Roots ‘n’ Blues. They’ll be a bit of jazz, a bit of blues, folk, roots and a real international flavour with bands from the USA, Africa and Spain as well as the UK. See page 21 for highlights. Well that’s it from me – I hope you enjoy the season we’ve put together.

‘A Celebration of Robert Burns’

Star Academy

Thursday 15 January • Talk • 12 noon

Saturday 24 January • Musical • 2.00pm & 4.30pm

A special lecture to explain why people the world over, not just the Scots, adore this man. But wasn’t he a drunken reprobate? Absolutely not! In his short life of 37 years Burns rescued and transformed the entire Scottish folk tradition.

When a Princess is finally born to King Stefan and Queen Stefanie, the entire kingdom celebrates. Among the guests are the neighbouring King Hubert, his young son Prince Phillip and the three good fairies. However, there’s also an evil sorceress who leaves a curse decreeing that on baby Aurora’s 16th birthday she will prick her finger and die. Unable to reverse the curse, Merryweather casts a spell for the Princess to sleep instead, only to be awakened by true love’s kiss. Come along and find out what happens next in this enchanting musical adventure...

His stance for democracy, his love of freedom, his huge humanity are just part of the reason that there will be ‘Burns Suppers’ all over the world this month, from Florida to Russia. Come and find out why this man, born in 1759, is still so deeply loved and honoured today. £5.00 / £4.50 concessions

The Jive Aces

Potted Pirates

Thursday 26 February • Jazz • 7.30pm

Saturday 28 February • Comedy Drama • 3.00pm & 7.00pm

The Jive Aces’ unique sound returns to the Guildhall with a combination of their own tunes, in true swing style, as well as fresh arrangements of songs by Louis Prima (Just a Gigolo), Louis Jordan (Five Guys Named Mo), Cab Calloway (Minnie the Moocher), Count Basie, Benny Goodman and Louis Armstrong.

After the success of ‘Potted Potter’, double act Dan and Jeff return with a new compressed caper in search of talking parrots and mysterious buried treasure in ‘Potted Pirates’. This time they’re swapping wizards for walking the plank and trading Hogwarts for the high seas. Including tall tales of Long John Silver and Blackbeard - plus a couple of notorious lady pirates – Dan and Jeff promise a full-scale re-enactment of the Spanish Armada, featuring thirty actors in full costume. But Will Dan persuade Jeff to let him play Jack Sparrow? This is great family fun – even for those who don’t know their skull and crossbones from their pieces of eight. Suitable for 6yrs and over.

As a group of lads from London, the Jive Aces were originally drawn together by their love for a style of music that outclassed anything around. That music was ‘hot jive’ with the beat, energy and enthusiasm of rock ‘n’ roll and the fun and rhythm of big band swing, all rolled into one. £12.00 /£10.00 concessions

The False Servant Third Party

Wednesday 25 February • Drama • 7.30pm Third Party returns to the Guildhall this season with a timeless comedy of deception, desire, double meaning and double crossing. The ‘false servant’ dresses as a man in order to discover the true nature of her husband-to-be and to answer the question: Is he driven by love or money? But to what extent is she willing to give herself up to discover the secrets of life and sexuality? Deconstructing male and female archetypes, comparing the sexual and emotional initiation of a young woman and exploring the fascination for evil under the cloak of desire, this dual language production of the 18th Century classic is playful, visual, inventive and very, very funny. In English and French. (Adult themes) £9.00 / £7.00 concessions £5.00 students

Literature at Lunchtime Boris Pasternak’s ‘Dr Zhivago’

Thursday 5 March • Talk • 12 noon This novel by the multi-talented Pasternak is primarily a poet’s novel and was banned in the USSR. Describing the Russian Revolution as it impinged on one individual, a doctor and a poet, it was famously filmed with Omar Sharif as Zhivago and is the book by which Pasternak is best known in the West. His clear disillusion with Communism led him to be expelled from the Soviet Writers’ Union and meant he could not accept the 1958 Nobel Prize which he so thoroughly deserved. Charlotte Bronte’s ‘Jane Eyre’

Beautiful and quick tempered, she created public dramas, practised sexual liberation and even held political power, making her one of the first in a long line of women to cultivate celebrity as a career.

It is much more than its basic ‘Mills and Boon’ plot of the poor plain girl marrying the boss! The final union of the heroine with her beloved Rochester has held an enduring fascination for generations of readers. Come and enjoy a novel about courage, endurance and final triumph.

42nd Street Star Academy

Friday 3 and Saturday 4 April • Musical • 7.30pm and 2.30pm Saturday Matinee 42nd Street is a great old-style musical with plenty of singing, dancing and not a little overacting! The leading man tries to get the stubborn director to change his mind but to no avail. In turn, the star cast as the ‘Pretty Lady’ proves a problem for the director - she’s married to the man stumping up the money for the show who’s in love with someone else. Sounds complicated? Oh What A Lovely War

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham

Grantham Operatic Society

Wednesday 22 April • Folk • 7.30pm

Wednesday 15 to Saturday 18 April • Opera • 7.30pm

Winners of the 2005 BBC National Folk Award, fiddler Aly Bain and accordionist Phil Cunningham are two of the most celebrated musicians on the Scottish traditional scene. They began working together in 1988 when both were already renowned for their previous accomplishments. Bain was a founding member of the Boys of the Lough, a group whose repertoire includes both Scottish and Irish influences and Cunningham became a member of the infamous Silly Wizard at the age of sixteen, launching a prolific and diverse musical career. The duo first worked together on a television series in 1988, and embarked on their first tour shortly after. They were so well-received that they have been touring together ever since. Their two previous duo recordings, The Pearl (1996) and The Ruby (1998), have met with high acclaim.

Is Sister Susie sewing shirts for the soldiers? No! - she’s selling seats for the sparkling, satirical show that is Oh What a Lovely War. This classic of modern musical theatre uses comedy, song and dance to show the tragedy, humour, pathos and ‘never say die’ attitude of those involved in ‘The War to End All Wars’ making it a perfect show for the whole family.
