Get ready and workshops this summer and a few famous faces you might well recognise… ‘It’ll be alright on the night with this lot!’
That’s right – we’ve got entertainment guru and master of the TV mishap Denis Norden in conversation with TV journalist Samantha Norman coming up this season and if you think that’s exciting, how about a generous helping of magic, music and glamour with everyone’s favourite magician, Paul Daniels! Comedy fans will get the chance to see stand-up comedian Andy Hamilton - co-creator of BBC One’s current hit sitcom ‘Outnumbered’ and a regular on TV shows such as ‘Have I Got News For You’ - in his brand new one-man show ‘Hat of Doom’ and for those of you who like a spot of drama, prize-winning, RADA-trained, Royal Shakespeare Company actor Roger Llewellyn stars as the world’s greatest detective in ‘Sherlock Holmes – The Life and Death’. We’ve got something of a treat for music lovers too in the shape of The Animals – famed for their gritty, bluesy sound in songs such as ‘The House of the Rising Sun’ – joined by a few of their friends. For those into folk music, the legendary Dave Swarbrick is on stage with one of the truly great English folk bands, Whippersnapper.

While we’re on the subject of music, you can enjoy a real mix of music genres from around the world in this year’s music festival on Friday 22, Saturday 23 and Sunday 24 May which includes gypsy jazz, flamenco guitar and dance from southern Spain, an eclectic fusion of Irish, Eastern European, African, Latin, Klezmer and Arabic music, fast-paced blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll’ in true rockabilly style and some smooth southern blues from the USA. The story of rock started with slaves ‘hollerin’ in the fields as they planted and picked cotton. As slavery was abolished, black musicians travelled north in America to find work and fortune. They played the ‘speakeasies’ of Chicago, New York and other major cities during the prohibition period and lived to see people like Elvis adopt their styles in the new music phenomenon rock ‘n’ roll. Visitors to the second Grantham Art Fair can enjoy an impressive display of local talent, both amateur and professional.
Tuesday 26 May Lord Murkor is a wicked elf with an evil and sinister plan. If that plan works, the royal family will be dead and Murkor will rule the Kingdom of the Elves. The only chance the Elves have is if Bink can think of a way to save them - but thinking is not exactly Bink’s strong point. Can loyalty, love or a wonderful sprite secret help Bink defeat Lord Murkor, or is he going to need something altogether more magical... and just a teensy bit hairier? Get up close and personal with the cast and characters in the workshop before the show and learn everything about it including some fantastic songs. Suitable for children 4yrs and over.
Work on show this year will be by art clubs from Grantham and Sleaford and students from Grantham College. Individual exhibitors will include Malcolm Doughty, Alan and Denise Drury, Margaret Hayward, Steve, Barbara and Joe Leaning and Rachel Connolly. Visitors can buy original artwork and find guidance and encouragement if they wish to take up art themselves. With over 300 exhibits, it’s not to be missed!

As the ladies and gentleman of the chamber orchestra play their music, under their placid exteriors volcanoes are secretly seething. Jealousy, gossip, boasting, backbiting and thwarted emotion result in a deadly climax.

Having finally found a use for his twisted sense of humour, Anthony has gone on to perform at all the major comedy clubs across the UK and beyond. Jim Smallman is anarchic and matey in equal measures and boasts a masterful rapport with the audience, clearly taking much delight in pushing the comedy boundaries. From humble beginnings as a stage hand, Norden’s writing career began in the RAF during World War II for troop shows, after which he teamed up with Frank Muir, writing for comedian Jimmy Edwards. Together the duo scripted numerous comedy radio sketches, including ‘Balham - Gateway to the South’ for Peter Sellers. With such a prolific career in the entertainment business, one thing is certain – he’s not short of a story or two!

Mrs Winifred Pillage, headmistress of the world famous Skull ‘n’ Crossbones School of Modern Piracy, invites you to a special assembly to celebrate the school’s 300th birthday. With the help of head boy ‘Wayward’ Wayne, Mrs Pillage will relive some of the adventures of past pirate pupils. Be prepared for lashings of comedy, songs, storytelling, puppetry, audience participation and even a smidgeon of history thrown in for fun! Suitable for 4 to 9-year-olds old and families.

Peatbog Faeries Thursday 30 July • Folk • 7.30pm Based on the Isle of Skye, the Peatbog Faeries can best be described as ‘the future of Celtic dance music’. Incorporating many influences from traditional jigs and reels through jazz, hip-hop and reggae, the Faeries perform using a dazzling mix of trad, funk, rock, electronics, brass and cavalier intention that has won them much acclaim on the folk scene. The Age of Stupid is a new cinema documentary starring Pete Postlethwaite as an old man living in the devastated world of 2055. He watches ‘archive’ footage from 2008 and asks: Why didn’t we stop climate change when we had the chance? Pete plays the founder of The Global Archive, a storage facility located in the (now melted) Arctic, preserving humanity’s achievements in the hope that the planet might one day be habitable again. He pulls together clips of archive to build a message showing what went wrong, focussing on six human stories.The film will be introduced in a short talk by Ed Pomfret, head of campaigns for The Woodland Trust.

Robin Nolan Trio Saturday 24 October • Gypsy Jazz • 7.30pm Based in Amsterdam, the Robin Nolan Trio is an all-acoustic gypsy jazz band inspired by legendary guitarist, Django Reinhardt. Endorsed by Bill Wyman of the Rolling Stones, Willie Nelson and the late George Harrison of The Beatles, the Robin Nolan Trio began as street musicians in 1991 busking in the busy tourist districts of Amsterdam. We’ve got a great range of workshops here at the Guildhall to suit all ages and tastes.

Whether you want to learn a new skill, practise existing skills with like-minded people, get together socially over a common interest or just have some fun - we’ve got it covered!
All you need is your instrument and a music stand to join this dedicated and friendly group of amateur musicians who meet to enjoy the experience of playing in an orchestra.
To join, all you need to do is show up at the start of the class you’re interested in and register. Alternatively, you can have a chat with the workshop leader and sit in for a week to see if it’s the class for you.

This workshop is taken by SoundLINCS - Lincolnshire’s Music Development Agency and involves both children and parents/carers. The aim of the workshop is to build skills and confidence in music making. This fun activity gives children, between the ages of two and five, the opportunity to be involved in active learning where they will be introduced to different instruments and have the chance to explore rhythm and dynamics. Also, watch out for social dances throughout the year, both casual and formal - they’re a great opportunity to practise your steps and socialise at the same time!
Opening hours are 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 2.00pm on Saturdays. The coffee bar is also open for drinks before all shows and during intervals.

The Gallery and Studio 4 can accommodate smaller functions and meetings. The Gallery is situated on the ground floor and can be used for small performances, parties, lectures, sales and meetings. Studio 4, situated on the first floor with lift access, can comfortably seat up to 25 people for meetings and lectures.

SAINT AUGUSTIN
The impressive Victorian clock tower of the Guildhall Arts Centre on St Peter’s Hill, right in the centre of town, serves as an obvious point of reference to anyone visiting the centre. Well situated and easy to find, this venue offers a range of facilities to accommodate a variety of activities including performances, conferences, seminars, presentations, meetings, workshops, receptions and parties. Buffet lunches are available from our in-house café from just £3.00 a head and there is a professional kitchen and a range of support equipment available for hire. The venue is accessible to wheelchair users with a lift to the first and second floors and has disabled facilities. Anyone requiring assistance should inform the venue prior to the visit and we will be more than happy to help. Perfect for wedding receptions, parties and informal performances, the Ballroom can hold up to 200 people and seat 100. With a small stage, dance floor, professional kitchen for your chosen caterer, licensed bar and some sound and lighting equipment available, the Ballroom is a great venue with lots to offer. Situated on the second floor with lift access, the Ballroom is also ideal for everything from sales meetings to seminars.
Regretfully we are unable to refund money or exchange tickets. If an event is sold out we will try to sell unwanted tickets.
Ease of access for wheelchair users was a priority during the conversion of the building and seating is available in the theatre. Please inform the Box Office staff regarding your needs when booking.

Discounts are available to Artscene Members, unemployed, senior citizens, students, children under 16, those in receipt of income support, invalidity, benefit or disability allowance, and to a carer accompanying a disabled person. Please bring proof of status when making a booking. Student Standbys are availabe to anyone in full-time education for just £2.00, 15 minutes prior to a guildhall promoted show.
ROAD
The Guildhall Theatre can seat up to 210 people and hosts performances, workshops, lectures and seminars throughout the year. The theatre is equipped with professional quality sound and lighting systems, an excellent upright piano, cinema screen and two fully fitted dressing rooms with adjoining showers and toilets. The theatre also has an induction loop and guide dogs are welcome.
