Esta app permite darle un completo seguimiento a sus carreras. En el sitio web de RunKeepers, podrá monitorear su progreso y presumirlo con sus amigos. More than 10 million people have converted their runs into a directed and successful training program thanks to this application from FitnessKeeper, Inc. This app allows you to follow your training closely. On the RunKeepers website you can monitor your progress and share it with friends.

2. ENDOMONDO SPORTS TRACKER (Android)

Endomondo es la aplicación más vendida de su categoría en la tienda Android. Esta app registra su actividad deportiva —duración, distancia, velocidad y calorías—, brinda información de audio tras cada kilómetro, comparte las palabras de ánimo de sus amigos, registra la frecuencia cardiaca y sincroniza prácticas entre distintas plataformas. Entre sus cualidades, encontramos: monitor para velocidad y distancia, rastreo de los entrenamientos en Google Maps, estadísticas de superación y Background mode —para utilizarla durante una competencia—. Esta app ganó el Android Developer Challenge 2008. This application allows runners to participate in virtual races. Among its features we find: a monitor for speed and distance, tracking of runs on Google Maps, personal best statistics and Background mode – to use the app in a race. This app won the Android Developer Challenge 2008.

4. RUNTASTIC (Android) Esta aplicación se presenta como un entrenador personal en tiempo real para corredores, ciclistas, senderistas y muchos deportistas más. El entrenador de Runtastic sigue su progreso en distancia, tiempo, velocidad, altitud, calorías y ritmo gracias a su GPS. Además, el Runtastic Earth View le permite mirar sus entrenamientos en 3D.

This application is like having your own personal trainer for runners, bikers, hikers and other sports enthusiasts in real time. The Runtastic trainer follows your progress in distance, time, speed, altitude, calories and pace, thanks to its GPS. También cuentan con una selección de jugos “verdes”, hechos por pedido. La variada carta reúne otros platillos cuyos ingredientes se pueden adquirir en el mercado.

Its red furnishings, whose design is typical of French bistros, are accented by black and white within an old house; it is comforting and cool, both inside and out. “It is a place where you can find good food and healthy options; it’s a fusion of a restaurant with a gourmet food store,” explained Andrea Artiñano, Owner and decorator of the cafe. Le Marché’s menu includes organic salads prepared with a combination of unexpected products that are exquisite to the palate. It also offers a selection of “green” juices, made to order. The varied menu includes other dishes whose ingredients can be found in the market. “We also offer fresh bread, classic pastries, superfoods, health supplements, ground coffees, imported food items and homemade jams and butters,” commented Artiñano.

uarenta y dos minutos después del impacto del primer avión, la Torre Norte del World Trade Center (WTC) se derrumbaba y sumía la ciudad en un ensordecedor silencio. Veintinueve minutos antes, la Torre Sur, impactada diecisiete minutos después de la Norte, había sucumbido ante el impacto y el calor que habían convertido su estructura de concreto y acero en una gelatina débil y endeble. Nueva York y el mundo enmudecían. Hoy, once años después, aquel silencio demoledor se ha convertido, gracias al poder transformador de la arquitectura, en la voz de las víctimas y sus supervivientes: un monumento de una simplicidad apabullante que invita a propios y a extraños a recordar en silencioso tributo; es un espacio que llama a la tolerancia y a la serenidad. El monumento —ubicado dentro de las huellas de las Torres Gemelas— consiste en dos espejos de agua idénticos de casi 4.000 metros cuadrados cada uno situados bajo el nivel de la calle y alimentados por la caída de agua desde sus cuatro costados. El diseño, seleccionado en un concurso en 2004 con participación de más de 5.200 proyectos de 63 países, es obra del arquitecto Michael Arad, quien llevaría poco después su talento a Handel Architects con quienes terminaría de desarrollar el proyecto. Como espacio público que es, el 9/11 Memorial se ha convertido en un lugar de meditación y contemplación: un hito cargado de

Twenty nine minutes before, the South Tower, hit seventeen minutes after the North Tower, also fell from the impact and heat that had made the concrete and steel structure turn into weak and malleable gelatin. New York, and the world, had fallen silent. Today, eleven years later, that deafening silence has become – thanks to the transforming power of architecture – the voice of victims and survivors: a monument of incredible simplicity that invites locals and visitors to remember and pay tribute in silence; it is a space that calls for tolerance and serenity.

A once años de los atentados del 11 de septiembre en la ciudad de Nueva York, la arquitectura se ha convertido en la mejor manera de recordar a las víctimas de aquel trágico día. Eleven years after the September 11th attacks on New York City, architecture has become one of the best ways to remember the victims of that tragic day.

The monument – located within the foundations of the Twin Towers – consists of two identical mirrors of water measuring almost 4,000 square meters each placed below street level and fed by waterfalls from all four sides. The design, selected in a contest in 2004 from more than 5,200 projects from 63 countries, belongs to architect Michael Arad, who later took his talent to Handel Architects, the firm that would finish developing the project. As a public space, the 9/11 Memorial has become a place for meditation and contemplation:

Así, los visitantes encuentran, al lado de los nombres de sus seres queridos, los nombres de amigos, familiares y compañeros de trabajo. Mientras los espejos de agua fueron fabricados con granito oscuro, los parapetos lo fueron de bronce. Durante el día, a través de cada letra, los visitantes ven el reflejo del espejo de agua. Por las noches, la iluminación que proviene del interior de las fuentes se cuela por el relieve de cada letra. En ambos momentos del día, el sentimiento es sobrecogedor. La elegante simplicidad del proyecto contrasta con la complejidad arquitectónica e ingenieril del sitio. Los 57.000 metros cuadrados del emplazamiento de WTC albergarán —adicionalmente al monumento— un museo, un centro de orientación al visitante, una estación de tren y otra de metro, espacio comercial subterráneo, cinco torres de oficinas y un centro de artes escénicas. Muchos de estos proyectos se entrelazan tanto física como programáticamente con los 33.000 metros cuadrados del monumento completo, en donde encontramos, además de los espejos de agua de Michael Arad, el trabajo del arquitecto paisajista Peter Walker, quien creó un “techo verde” poblado por un denso bosque de 416 robles. “Mi deseo de imaginar un futuro para este sitio viene del anhelo de confrontar las emociones que emergieron aquel día”, comentó

a landmark full of meaning in the “Big Apple.” Around the perimeter of each of the fountains that fall in waterfalls to the mirror of water below are barricades with the names of the victims written and organized by their relationships to relatives. Visitors can find next to the names of their loved ones, names of friends, family members and coworkers. The mirrors of water were built using dark granite, while the barricades were made of bronze. During the day, through each letter, visitors can see the reflection of the water. At night, lighting inside the fountains filters through each letter. At both times of day, the feeling is overwhelming. The elegant simplicity of the project contrasts to the architectural and engineering complexity of the site. In addition to the monument, the 57,000 square meters of the WTC site will house a museum, visitors center, train and metro stations, underground shopping center, five office buildings and an arts center. Many of these projects are interwoven both physically and programmatically with 33,000 square meters of construction already complete. In addition to Michael Arad’s water mirrors, we find a project by landscape architect Peter Walker, who created a “green roof” using a dense forest of 416 oak trees.

Arad en una entrevista concedida al New York Times en septiembre de 2011, en el décimo aniversario de los ataques. Arad, testigo presencial del momento en el que el segundo de los aviones se estrellaba contra el WTC y de la caída de la Torre Sur, terminó devolviendo a la ciudad el necesarísimo espacio que buscaba para el luto. Un lugar en el que la pérdida se transforma en memoria y tributo. Un lugar para nunca olvidar.

The 9/11 Memorial is a place for remembrance and tribute to honor the close to 3,000 people who died that day, as well as the six victims who perished in the World Trade Center attack in February 1993. “I think my desire to imagine a future for this site came out of trying to come to terms with the emotions that day aroused,” commented Arad in an interview with The New York Times in September 2011, on the tenth anniversary of the attacks. Arad, a witness of the second plane hitting the WTC and the falling of the South Tower, ended up giving the city the space it needed for mourning. A place in which loss becomes remembrance and tribute. A place to never forget.

El Survivor Tree, aquel peral que los bomberos encontraron dañado pero aún con vida en medio de los escombros de la zona cero, había florecido en el primer día de la primavera. Trasplantado al sitio del monumento en diciembre de 2010, el peral se levanta por encima de los robles que muy pronto se convertirán en un tupido bosque. Cuatro veces más grande que cuando fuera llevado al Bronx para ser sanado en un parque de aquella localidad, sus nueve metros de altura simbolizan el renacer de una ciudad que ha encontrado en la hermandad y el optimismo su mayor fortaleza. Como bien ha dicho el alcalde de Nueva York Michael Bloomberg, el Survivor Tree “es un testamento a la habilidad de Nueva York de resistir y un símbolo de la inquebrantable certeza de un futuro brillante”.

Last March 20th New York had another reason to smile. The Survivor Tree, the pear tree that firefighters found damaged, but alive, in the middle of the ashes at Ground Zero, had flowered on the first day of Spring. Transplanted to the site of the monument in December 2010, the pear tree grows above the oaks that will soon become a dense forest. Four times larger than it was when it was taken to a park in the Bronx to be nursed back to health, its nine meters symbolize the rebirth of a city that has found its greatest strength in brotherhood and optimism. As well-stated by the Mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, the Survivor Tree “is a testament to the ability of New York to survive and a symbol of the unyielding certainty of a bright future.”

El diseñador de interiores catalán Xavier Roselló Llonch deja que cada proyecto le sugiera el camino. Eso sí, para él, es fundamental el respeto y la buena comunicación con cada cliente.

esde que era un niño en la escuela, Xavier Roselló ganaba concursos de dibujo. Traía esa inclinación natural por expresarse a través de un lápiz. Luego, su ciudad Barcelona —con la riqueza arquitectónica de Gaudí, las manifestaciones artísticas por doquier y el diseño omnipresente en cada rincón— enriquecería su visión de mundo y encauzaría sus habilidades hacia la carrera de diseño de interiores. “Esa sensibilidad especial hacia el arte me viene de mi ciudad”, dice Roselló, quien aterrizó hace año y medio en Costa Rica con un tiquete de ida, sin regreso. “Ahora, estoy tan lejos”, dice, mientras enfatiza su intención de hacer patria al otro lado del Atlántico. Desde ese momento, ha estado observando y conociendo el medio; de paso, ha aprovechado para realizar algunos proyectos de reformas y dar clases en la Universidad Veritas. Influido por el trópico Roselló trabajó por trece años con la firma Tramontán, cuya cartera ascendía a 800 clientes. “Empecé llevando los planos a las casas de los clientes y terminé dirigiendo obras”, nos cuenta. Luego, abrió su propia oficina Estudi A-2 en 2004. “Me han gustado siempre los retos y trabajar en cosas diversas”. De esta época, destacan proyectos de retail como las tiendas Tram y oficinas para el sector privado, entre ellas empresas de pastelería y de automoción, además del gobierno local catalán. Como interiorista formado en España, Roselló es capaz de trabajar la obra integralmente, como lo haría un arquitecto en Costa Rica. En cuanto a su estilo, las formas definidas y los colores sobrios con acentos parecen ser una preferencia en sus proyectos. “Soy muy cuadriculado, pero, desde que llegué a Costa Rica, me estoy curvando; estoy empezando a ser más orgánico”, explica. Nos comenta que ha estado aprendiendo de la luz que, a diferencia de Barcelona, acá es más perpendicular. “No me explico el uso de claraboyas”, agrega. Para Roselló, la iluminación es un tema muy importante. “Cada espacio es un escenario teatral, donde existe más de una opción de iluminación. Al mediodía, se puede almorzar en el comedor y, por la tarde, se trabaja. Al caer la tarde y querer ver la televisión, es otro momento. Un espacio alberga diferentes escenas y puede parecer un lugar distinto cada vez”. Los materiales se los sugiere el espacio, pero utiliza con regularidad el bambú y, en sus trabajos europeos, acabados

ince he was a small boy at school, Xavier Rosello would win drawing contests. He had this natural inclination to express himself using a pencil. Later, it would be his city, Barcelona, with Gaudi’s rich architecture and artistic manifestations and design everywhere in the city, which would enrich his vision of the world and channel his talents toward a career in interior design. “This special awareness of art comes to me from my city,” says Roselló, who landed a year and a half ago in Costa Rica with a oneway ticket. “Now, I’m so far away,” he says, emphasizing his intention to stay on this side of the Atlantic. Since his arrival, he has observed and gotten to know the medium, and has also had the opportunity to do some projects and give classes at the Universidad Veritas.

Influenced by the Tropics Rosello worked for thirteen years with the Tramontan firm whose portfolio surpassed 800 clients. “I began by carrying blueprints to client homes and ended up managing projects.” He stayed there until he decided to open his own office Estudio A-2 in 2004. “I’ve always liked challenges and working on different things.” From that phase of life, he highlighted retail projects, for the Tram stores and private offices, including a bakery and workshop, as well as the local Catalan government. As an interior designer trained in Spain, Rosello is able to work with projects in an integrated fashion, like an architect in Costa Rica. In terms of his style, defined shapes and sober colors with accents seem to be preferred in his projects. “I’m very square, but since I came to Costa Rica, I’ve become more curved, I’m beginning to become more organic,” he explained. He also says that he has been learning from light, which is more perpendicular here than in Barcelona. “I don’t understand the use of skylights.” With light Rosello does not play around. “Each space is a theater set, in which there is more than one lighting option. At noon, you may eat in your dining room, and in the afternoon, use it to work. At night you may want to watch television, it’s a different time. A space is home to different scenes and can appear to be a different place each time.” Materials are suggested by the space, but he usually uses bamboo. In his European work, he uses environmentally-certified and sustainable finishings or finds novel uses for other materials, such as methacrylate for lighted or voluminous signs.

Cuando se trata de diseñar locales comerciales de retail, el profesional catalán realiza un estudio de mercadeo y funcionamiento del establecimiento. “Debe hablarse mucho con el cliente y tomar en cuenta variables como la exposición del producto, la climatización y el sonido”. You have to make the client understand what is best for him, optimizing budget and surpassing his expectations.” When designing retail establishments, the Catalan professional does a market study on the functionality of the place. “I have to talk a lot with the client and consider variables, such as exposure to the product, environment, sound.” For offices the designer’s role, explains Rosello, is to create work spaces that take full advantage of efficiency and the possibility for promotion of employees, as well as to create a more productive business for the businessperson. “Seen like that, we designers have too much influence on society.”

Lo que fuera un gran espacio vacío, que en algún momento sirviera de escenario para una película olvidada hace mucho tiempo, terminó por convertirse en un loft de ensueño en la siempre fascinante capital española.

a arquitecta Teresa Sapey, quien diseñó este lujoso loft para una pareja de franceses en Madrid, nos habla del desafío de dar nueva vida a un espacio tan voluminoso. “Lo que deseaba era crear una casa real que pudiese ser habitable, humana y confortable; no quería simplemente un espacio reciclado”. Los puntos de vista de Sapey se tornan más relevantes cuando se toma en cuenta que muchas veces, al transformar un espacio en un loft, los resultados pueden ser desilusionantes. Por lo general, en ese tipo de proyectos, el área sigue siendo la misma y, como sustituto del diseño, se recurre a amueblar con piezas icónicas. Cuando eso pasa, el loft no es más que la cáscara original y el proyecto se queda en simples buenas intensiones. Lo contrario sucede acá. Para los dueños de este espacio de 800 metros cuadrados en el corazón de Madrid, la experiencia fue diferente. Ellos deseaban un loft y lo obtuvieron de la manera en que nuestra sociedad de internet obtiene las cosas: buscándolas en línea. De esta manera, tras digitar en Google “loft a la venta”, dieron con él. “La primera búsqueda nos llevó al portal de una compañía especializada en vender espacios inusuales, atípicos. Tenían esta gigantesca bodega para la venta que decidí visitar al día siguiente. Era un viernes y resolví que, si la idea aún rondaba mi cabeza el lunes, se lo diría a mi esposa”, comentó quien ahora es su dueño. “De hecho, seguí pensando en el espacio todo el fin de semana. Ya para el martes, ambos fuimos y tomamos la decisión de adquirirlo”.

What use to be a empty and dark space that had once served as the location for a movie now long forgotten is now a a dramatic and stunning loft in Madrid, Spain’s ever fascinating capital.

oted architect Teresa Sapey, who designed this luxurious loft in Madrid, sums up the challenge of taking on the vast space. “What I wanted to do was create ‘a real home that would be liveable, human and comfortable and not just a recycled space.” Sapey’s views are all the more relevant given that loft conversions can frequently disappoint. They may remain little more than the original space, into which iconic pieces of furniture are placed as a substitute for design. Thus the loft is little more than the shell it originally was, lacking any real vision. For the French owners of this 800 metre squared space in the heart of Madrid, there were no such issues. They wanted a loft and, in an unsurprising but nonetheless amusing commentary on our Internet age, they found it via typing in ‘loft for sale’ into Google. “The first result linked us to the website of a company specializing in selling atypical and unusual places. They had a huge warehouse for sale. I visited it the day after. It was a Friday and I decided then that if I was still considering it on Monday I’d tell my wife,” says the male owner. “In fact I was still thinking about it so I told her and we went back and made the decision on Tuesday.” What they purchased was ’an empty, dark, ugly and dirty space’ that had once served as the location for a movie now long forgotten. As the owners put it, the only way from there was up; the task was now to work their way through the myriad of design possibilities. They chose Sapey via a friend whose house she’d designed.

Lo que compraron fue “un gran espacio vacío, oscuro, sucio y feo”, que en algún momento sirvió como escenario de una película olvidada hace mucho tiempo. Como los mismos dueños argumentaron, de ahí en adelante debían escoger entre una miríada de opciones de diseño. Finalmente, se inclinaron por la arquitecta Teresa Sapey, quien había diseñado la casa de un amigo. El resultado de dos años de planeamiento y trabajo es un dramático espacio habitable. Con la escogencia de materiales armónicos, Sapey ha creado un lugar cálido. La madera se combina con los pisos lujados y largos estantes blancos que marcan una horizontalidad que termina por darle escala al proyecto. El estilo de Sapey crea una vivienda con personalidad propia. El loft entero ha sido ensamblado con la precisión del sastre y, como en la alta costura, cada elemento ha sido creado con la totalidad final en mente. Cada espacio, cada decisión de diseño, desde el lavabo hasta la vasta biblioteca, responde a un concepto totalizador. Una consideración clave para la arquitecta fue el emplazamiento: un loft situado en el centro de Madrid, la exitante pero a veces ruidosa capital española. Entonces, su visión fue crear un amortiguador del sonido, al tiempo que el espacio interno lo abría para crear visibilidad a través de todo el edificio.

The result of two years of planning and work is a dramatic and stunning building that is as visually arresting as it is restful. Sapey has chosen to use materials that harmonise rather than contrast, to achieve unity and warmth. Large wooden floor panels, teak, Corian and Silverstone predominate while in the pool area black slate tiles accompany steel and mosaic tiles from Bisazza. Sapey’s discerning, luxe style has moulded the space into a unique whole. This home has been tailored with precision and, as with haute couture, everything here has been made with the overall result in mind. Every last detail has been fine-tuned be it a sink, a bottle shelf or the vast library A key initial consideration for Sapey was the location: the loft sits in the centre of Madrid with the accompanying potential for noise. Her vision was to create a buffer for the sound, whilst opening the space up to create views throughout the building. Central to the design was an internal patio that provides a focal point and is accessible from both family bedrooms. Though sleeping areas are enclosed and include their own bathrooms ‘for privacy,’ the integrity of the loft is preserved by open living spaces that allow dramatic internal vistas. The kitchen leads to an expansive living room space looking on to the pool enclosed in its own glass box so that humidity and chlorine do not invade the living areas. A multi level living space divides various functions including TV, relaxing areas and a generous library. By any standards this is a striking and luxurious home.

Un aspecto primordial para el diseño era el patio interno, que provee un punto focal y al cual se llega desde ambos dormitorios familiares. A pesar de que las áreas de descanso son cerradas para mantener la privacidad, la integridad del loft se preserva con la amplitud de las zonas sociales y sus dramáticas vistas internas. La cocina lleva a una amplia sala de estar desde la cual observamos la piscina, resguardada dentro de su propio cubo de vidrio para que la humedad no invada el resto de aposentos. Un espacio de múltiples niveles se divide según su función: ver televisión, descansar o leer. “No queríamos que este espacio fuera solamente una colección de grandes ideas: deseábamos principalmente que fuera nuestro hogar, nuestro lugar para vivir y respirar”, han dicho sus dueños. Y ciertamente en eso se ha convertido: en un verdadero hogar, desde el amplio baño hasta el patio interno de naranja intenso y la cómoda cocina. Cada espacio es único; todos conforman un loft de ensueño. Lea, la hija de la pareja, también sabe que vive en un lugar especial. Después de todo, no todos los niños tienen un dormitorio dúplex en el centro de Madrid.

“We didn’t want this place to be just a collection of great design ideas; we also wanted it to be our house, a place to live and breathe” say the owners. And breathe it does, in all sorts of ways. From the huge bathroom with its imposing Corian furniture to the way in which the patio lights up in a melange of burgundy and orange when the sun’s rays hit the roof. Then there is the bright red message in French on the kitchen wall, declaring a dislike of cooking “It’s more about me requesting others to cook in our wonderful kitchen - like my husband - so that I don’t have to,” admits the female owner. Daughter Lea is also aware she lives somewhere very special. After all not many children have a duplex bedroom. Not many people have a fire in the building next door, on the first night they spend in their new house either. It was, say the owners, a strange experience but thankfully since then the drama has remained in this stunning design that takes loft living to a whole new level.

Su porte de líneas modernas, su mezcla equilibrada de materiales y su serena prestancia son apenas un viso de la magnificencia que encontraremos muros adentro. Levantada sobre un terreno trapezoidal —con la parte más angosta hacia la calle de acceso, al oeste, y la más ancha mirando la cancha de golf, al este—, ciertamente el emplazamiento determinó la concepción espacial final. “Queríamos aprovechar la mayor cantidad de área construible por lo que era predecible que la forma dinámica del terreno afectaría el diseño de la casa”, comentó Manuel Quesada Kemhadjian, su arquitecto. Así es: la ortogonalidad de la distribución va mutando en un diálogo con las diagonales del lote, a lo largo del proceso de diseño hasta integrarse a plenitud con el emplazamiento. Reminiscencia de los zaguanes de las casas de los barrios tradicionales de San José, un espacio de doble altura hace las veces de núcleo de la casa. En él se desarrollan las actividades sociales y se regula la climatización general de la vivienda. Aprovechando las dimensiones verticales del espacio, además de las corrientes de aire generadas desde el campo de golf y que la terraza adyacente invita a pasar, la ventilación cruzada hace que se prescinda por completo del aire acondicionado; el enfriamiento mecánico se limita a los dormitorios, en caso de ser necesario. Combinada con las estrategias pasivas de regulación de la temperatura, la casa recurre también a la automatización para complementar el trabajo. Es así como, para protegerse del sol de la mañana, el viento del noreste y la lluvia, cuatro toldos de nueve metros de altura se accionan por medio del sistema de control general de la casa.

ocated at an intersection in the Valle del Sol neighborhood, this home is an eye-catcher, which is understandable. Its modern lines, its balanced mix of materials and its serene poise are just a part of the magnificence that we find within its walls. Built on a trapezoidal plot of land – with the narrowest part on the access street to the west, and the widest part facing the golf course to the east – the territory clearly determined the final spatial concept. “We wanted to take advantage as much as possible of the constructed area, so it was clear that the shape of the land had to affect the design of the house,” commented Manuel Quesada Kemhadjian, the architect. As such, the orthogonal distribution was transformed, in dialogue with the sides of the lot, throughout the design process until it became integrated fully into the site. Reminiscent of the hallways of homes in traditional neighborhoods of San Jose, a two-story space becomes of the nucleus of the house. Taking advantage of the vertical dimensions of the space, in addition to air flowing from the golf course and adjacent inviting terrace, the cross-breeze makes air conditioning unnecessary, limiting AC use to the bedrooms only. Combined with passive temperature control strategies, the house is also complemented by automation. This automation is the best way to provide protection from the morning sun, the northeasterly wind and rain. Four nine-meter-high shutters are activated through the home’s central control system.

Al lado de la sala principal, dividida apenas por puertas corredizas de vidrio, encontramos uno de los espacios más espectaculares de la vivienda. Se trata de la terraza que mira al campo de golf. Custodiado por tres esbeltas columnas de acero, este espacio se adueña de la vista y alberga algunas de las funciones sociales del proyecto. Como único divisor de la casa con el verde del campo, encontramos la piscina de borde infinito. Al amanecer, el sol se asoma por esta fachada. En otra de sus fronteras, la terraza comunica a través de puertas corredizas con la cocina, quedando entre esta y la terraza el bar como única división. Al lado contrario, mimetizado con la propia arquitectura y a distancia de un solo clic, los residentes disfrutan del primero de dos Home Theaters de la casa. El proyector se esconde tras una compuerta hecha de la misma madera del cielo. Al mismo tiempo, la carcasa de la pantalla de protección se oculta en un nicho hecho a la medida y los parlantes empotrados se han pintado del mismo color y acabado del cielo y las paredes. EN LA PLANTA ALTA Dieciocho escalones de vidrio más arriba, nos esperan al sur la sala de televisión, la biblioteca y el dormitorio principal. Al norte, encontramos los tres cuartos de visitas, cada uno con su propio baño. Una vez en el descanso, el cuarto de televisión es el único espacio

Next to the main living room, only divided by sliding glass doors, we fine one of the home’s most spectacular spaces: a terrace overlooking the golf course. Surrounded by three slender steel columns, this space beckons and is home to some of the project’s social areas. As the only divider between the house and the green course, we find an infinity pool with the sun rising overhead. On one of its other sides, the terrace connects to the kitchen through sliding glass doors, past the bar, acting as the only division. On the opposite side, mimicking the home’s own architecture and as far away as a click, residents enjoy the first of the home’s two Home Theaters. The projector is hidden behind a hatch made from the same wood as the ceiling. At the same time, the screen’s box is hidden in a perfectly-sized space. Recessed speakers have been painted the same color as the ceiling and walls. ON THE SECOND FLOOR Up eighteen glass steps and to the south of the television room, we find the library and Master bedroom. To the north, we find three guest bedrooms, each with its own bathroom. Once on the landing, the television room is the only space separating the Master bedroom and bathroom. This space is home to the second Home Theater. As a wall-less space, motorized speakers have been installed to descend from the ceiling and rotate into position for optimal sound.

El dormitorio propiamente dicho, que conforma un área cúbica de madera, hace referencia a las casas de ese mismo material del arquitecto josefino José María Barrantes. Visto desde la terraza principal, este cubo parece suspenderse en el aire. Además de ser un acento de color y materiales, el volumen da escala a la doble altura del resto de la terraza.

The Master bedroom and bathroom is a large space just divided by a change in materials. Here, we find a Jacuzzi and shower, both with views of the golf course and the latest technology. To the side, a large walk-in closet finishes this large and functional space. The bedroom itself is created in a wooden cube, in reference to wooden houses of San Jose architect José María Barrantes. Seen from the main terrace, this cube seems to be suspended in air. In addition to serving as an accent of color and materials, the volume gives scale to the two-story height of the rest of the terrace.

Jacob Karpio Galería cumple 30 años de existencia en Costa Rica. Para celebrarlo, la galería se une a Tulsi Karpio (hija del galerista), de T+Karpio Project, y la curadora peruana Giuliana Vidarte. Ellos crearon La encomienda, una propuesta que entreteje un nuevo sentido de representación del arte contemporáneo peruano, a través de 9 de sus artistas.

Jacob Karpio Galería is celebrating 30 years in Costa Rica, together with Tulsi Karpio of the T+Karpio Project (daughter of the Gallery owner) and Peruvian curator Giuliana Vidarte, with the arrival of La encomienda. This exhibit weaves a new sense of representation for contemporary Peruvian art through nine artists.

l término “encomienda”, de uso común en Latinoamérica para designar envíos de un lugar a otro, tuvo en la época de la Conquista un sentido más apegado a la noción de territorio. Adoptado del latín in commendan, que era el puesto de confianza en cierto nivel jerárquico dentro de la organización católica, fungió en el “nuevo mundo” como una especie de reconocimiento a los “primeros residentes” españoles, quienes recibían una parcela de tierras con esclavos. No rastrear etimológica e históricamente un término así es imposible ante una propuesta que llega, justamente, de un centro importante de lo que otrora fue El Virreinato del Perú.

Desde las Instrucciones para abrir una encomienda escritas por la curadora Giuliana Vidarte como antesala a la exposición, se vislumbra una idea de “terreno o límite” que es importante en el contenido de la muestra. Perú, Lima y la Cordillera de los Andes son algunos de los enclaves nombrados, aderezados con mapamundi y códigos postales. La idea de este proyecto portable (fundamentalmente obra de pequeño o mediano formato y un gran contenido fotográfico) cumple con la acepción contemporánea de envío que contiene “la encomienda”, pues, luego, será prácticamente desmantelado por la movilización hacia San José de la mayoría de los artistas junto a la curadora y la productora. Estamos ante ese otro tipo de encomienda que supone un viaje de conquista, una avanzada que reclama un territorio; en este caso, “otra” idea de representación del arte peruano. Con cierto grado de intertextualidad, la muestra replica un viaje sobre otro viaje. La mayoría de las obras emula la idea de bitácora o documento, sin apelar a cierta reformulación del realismo o “idea de la verdad”, trastocada por la premura del tiempo o la superposición de información que se produce en la vida contemporánea. La ciudad es caldo de cultivo donde se originan muchas de las propuestas de los artistas; en algunos casos, ocurre en forma de imaginario, pero, en otros, como laboratorio de construcciones y deconstrucciones, una suerte de escenografía donde las obras “suceden” y demandan un sentido de temporalidad más que espacial. Según sus propios autores, la ciudad de Lima ha sido afectada por un viaje radical hacia lo cosmopolita y, aunque no en todos los casos es ella la protagonista, sí es operativa como pretexto para la representación. Otra de las indagaciones de esta muestra —sin caer en el discurso de la nostalgia— apunta a la memoria histórica, es decir, los saberes de un cuerpo cultural con un sentido dado en la tradición. La arquitectura, en cuanto “continente” de esta presencia, y la geometría, como pensamiento abstracto de esta, hacen de La encomienda una muestra sui generis en el tratamiento de lo histórico y en el engranaje de una nueva arqueología urbana. T+Karpio Project es una suerte de oficina virtual de proyectos de artes visuales que, en este momento, opera en Lima. Este modelo, extendido ya en Latinoamérica, propone una forma más urgente y dinámica de ejecutar nuevas ideas, sin la condición de producir para espacios físicos concretos. La obra adquiere ese sentido de ‘correspondencia’ bien habida en su lugar de destino. Esta es sin duda una de las motivaciones de Giuliana Vidarte para crear esta curaduría que es un puente entre “el adentro y el afuera”, entre preocupaciones íntimas como lo identitario o lo cotidiano llevado a un plano público. Recuerda Vidarte, con la reunión de estos nueve artistas, la frase de Blaise Pascal que reza: “la costumbre es una segunda naturaleza que destruye siempre la primera”. Con esta muestra, asistimos a esa instauración de una suerte de naturaleza alternativa o, en efecto, de lo cotidiano como auténtica naturaleza.

he word “encomienda,” which is commonly used in Latin America to mean shipments entrusted to someone when going from one place to another, came into use during the Conquista with a connotation that was more closely related to the notion of territory. Adopted from the Latin “in commendan,” which referred to the confidence entrusted to a certain hierarchical level within the Catholic Church, in the “New World” it became used as a type of recognition for the Spanish’s “first residents” as a parcel of land with slaves. It is impossible not to etymologically and historically analyze such a word, when viewing an exhibit like this one, which comes precisely from an important center, the once Viceroyalty of Peru. From the Instrucciones para abrir una encomienda written by curator Giuliana Vidarte as an introduction to the exhibit, we see the idea of “land or limit” that is important to the content: Peru, Lima and the Andes mountain range are some of the enclaves that are named and seasoned with maps and postal codes. The idea of this portable exhibit (mostly small or medium sized works and a large amount of photography) fits with the contemporary meaning of shipment in “la encomienda,” but it is later practically dismantled by the movement toward San Jose by most of the artists, as well as the project’s curator and producer. Here, we find another type of “encomienda” that presumes a trip to conquer, or an advance made to reclaim territory; in this case “another” idea of representation in Peruvian art. With a certain degree of literalness, the exhibit replicates a journey of another journey. Most of the works emulate the idea of a log or document, without appealing to a certain reformulation of realism or “idea of the truth,” disrupted by the quickness of time or the superimposition of information that is present in contemporary life. The city is a breeding ground in which many of the artists’ works are created, in some cases through imagination, and in others through a laboratory of construction and deconstructions, a type of set in which works “happen,” demanding more a sense of temporality than spatiality. According to its authors, the city of Lima has been affected by a radical journey toward becoming cosmopolitan. Even though the city is not always the protagonist, it is operational as a pretext for representation. Another inquiry made by this exhibit – without falling into discourse on nostalgia – is around historical memory, or in other words, the flavors of a cultural body with a sense of tradition. The “continental” architecture of this presence and geometry as an abstract thought of it, makes La encomienda a sui generis exhibit in a historical sense and the wheels of a new urban archeology. T+Karpio Project is a type of virtual office of visual arts projects that is currently operating out of Lima. This model, already expanded to Latin America, proposes a more urgent and dynamic way to execute projects without the condition of production for concrete, physical spaces. The exhibit acquires a sense of “correspondence” wellsituated in its destination. This was, without a doubt, one of Giuliana Vidarte’s motivations to create this exhibit as a bridge between “the inside and out,” between intimate concerns, such as identity or daily life, carried to a public sphere. Vidarte, in a meeting with these nine artists, recalled a quote from Blaise Pascal that states: “custom is a second nature which destroys the former.” With this exhibit we find ourselves at this foundation for a type of alternative nature or effect: of daily life as authentic nature.

LUIS MARTÍN BOGDANOVICH Arquitecto. Dedicado fundamentalmente a la restauración arquitectónica. Su fotografía intervenida, donde a través de una ventana con una veladura se deja ver del otro lado de la calle la arquitectura antigua, metaforiza el lente del fotógrafo, como una invitación a ver más allá de lo inmediato y redescubrir, en sus propias palabras: “la grandiosidad del pasado”. Architect. Mainly dedicated to architectural restoration. His photography, in which, through a glazed window you can see from the other side of the street old architecture, is a metaphor for the photography lens, like an invitation to see beyond the immediate and rediscover, in his own words: “the grandeur of the past.”

FERNANDO OTERO Formado en Artes plásticas, es pintor, escultor, dibujante y diseñador industrial. En su obra, crea una serie de “objetos” o “esculturas” a partir de la destrucción de revistas cuyos lomos exhibe como cadáveres. Su propuesta referencia la digestión de la acumulación cultural contemporánea y la “restauración” estética del desecho a partir de una idea de travesía urbana. Trained in plastic arts, he is a painter, sculptor, draftsman and industrial designer. In his work he creates a series of “objects” or “sculptures” by using parts of magazines whose spines are exhibited like cadavers. It is a work that refers to the digestion of contemporary culture’s accumulation, as well as the esthetic “restoration” of waste through an idea of an urban crossing.

HANS STOLL Fotógrafo. Con la serie “Hipertélico urbano”, presenta acumulaciones, aparentemente de forma caótica, de los sitios que visita; de esta manera, sugiere una especie de memoria confusa del viaje. El resultado son obras que insinúan el propio agotamiento y el vértigo de las ciudades; al mismo tiempo, la transparencia en ellas entrevé un último gesto humano en la delicada poesía visual de lo urbano. Photographer. With his series “Hipertélico urbano,” he presents accumulations, in a chaotic way, of places he visits, suggesting a type of confused memory of the trip. The result is projects that suggest the exhaustion and vertigo of cities, while their transparency suggest a last human gesture in the delicate visual poetry of an urban setting.

CHRISTIAN FUCHS Abogado y fotógrafo. Su trabajo intenta crear realidades distintas a partir de lo que le es íntimamente conocido. Reinterpretaciones del espacio y de la arquitectura donde al “geometrizar” sus composiciones y de algún modo al ubicarlas en el terreno de lo abstracto diluye su contenido “histórico” en función de un contenido formal estético. Lawyer and photographer. His work intends to create different realities based on things that are intimately known. Reinterpretations of space and architecture in which he makes his compositions “geometric” and somehow locates them in the abstract arena, diluting their “historic” content with a formal esthetic one.

Arquitecto y fotógrafo. Las imágenes de ZAGA (palabra de origen árabe para retaguardia) son justamente fotografías de vallas publicitarias vistas desde la parte de atrás. Estas imágenes, suerte de lado ciego de la ciudad, son abstracciones que visibilizan estéticamente cierta publicidad, altamente invasiva en el paisaje urbano.

Architect and photographer. The ZAGA (an Arabic word for at the back) images are just photographs of marketing billboards seen from behind. These images, a type of blind side of the city, are abstractions that esthetically make visible certain publicity that is highly present in urban landscapes.

DIEGO LAMA Artista visual. Las fotografías que presenta Diego Lama comparten con sus videos la ferocidad de sus escenarios. Sus imágenes de espacios interiores siempre poseen un barroquismo melancólico, casi oscurantista. Cuando la figura humana aparece en ellas, ocupa siempre un lugar absurdo y/o secundario, como si acentuaran su inutilidad. Visual artist. The photographs that Diego Lama presents share the ferocity of their scenes through videos. His images of interior spaces always have a Baroque melancholy, which is almost obscurantist. When the human figure appears in them, it is always in an absurd and/or secondary place, as if accentuating their unusefulness.

Fotógrafa costarricense invitada a La encomienda. Su trabajo premia fundamentalmente lo documental; por ello, sus imágenes evocan una de las líneas importantes de la muestra, que es el viaje o travesía como idea de territorio. Las imágenes de Zürcher, sus fotos de anuncios o espacios reconocibles en cualquier ciudad, estimulan el carácter narrativo de La encomienda y la posibilidad de dialogar con el resto de las historias.

Costa Rican photographer invited to La Encomienda. Her work is mostly documentary, so her images evoke one of the important topics of the exhibit, which is the trip or journey as an idea of territory. Zurcher’s images, her marketing photos or pictures of recognizable spaces in any city, provoke the narrative character of La Encomienda and the possibility of dialoging with the rest of the stories.

Artista visual. Cabieses ha enunciado su propia obra como “una bancarrota simbólica de la imagen, expropiada radicalmente de su sentido”. Sus intervenciones geométricas (una tradición no tan sólida en el Perú) sobre gobelinos o reproducciones antiguas pueden ser traducidas como palimpsestos, pero también como el gesto cuestionador o violento sobre la propia cultura.

Visual artist. Cabieses has pronounced his work as “a bankruptcy symbolic of the image, radically expropriated from sense.” His geometric interventions (not so traditional to Peru) on Gobelins or old reproductions, can be translated as palimpsest, but also as a questioning or violent gesture on culture itself.

Sus collages recrean la posibilidad de una segunda naturaleza o puesta en valor de lo que podría reconocerse como la “otra vida de las cosas”. Visual artist. The series of Franchy’s images (un)draw a type of cartography or non-specific urban imagery using dialogue among old postcards. His collages recreate the possibility of a second nature or value of what could be called “another life for things.”

FABRICIO CALMET Escultor y fotógrafo. Sus paisajes de “Deshielo urbano” son ideas “concretas”, es decir, con gran sentido escultórico e ilustran eso que reconocemos como “una belleza terrible”, de la que Susan Sontag ya había hablado. La efectiva combinación de la fuerza inminente de lo natural y el registro de lo efímero refuerzan el carácter poético de sus imágenes. Sculptor and photographer. His “Deshielo urbano” landscapes are “concrete” ideas, in other words, they convey a great sense of sculpture in what we recognize as “terrible beauty,” spoken of by Susan Sontag. The effective combination of the imminent force of nature with ephemeral characteristics reinforces the poetic nature of his images.

Declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en 2003, Tel Aviv ha hecho de la tecnología —más de 1.200 empresas del ramo se ubican dentro de sus fronteras— el motor de su futuro. Como combustible, la ciudad se alimenta de su joven población, estimada en un tercio menor de 35 años.

Israel’s second largest city is known for its excellence as a technological center and headquarters to hundreds of companies dedicated to innovation. Bathed by the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Tel Aviv was built on 52 square kilometers of sand dunes, giving way to the city that never sleeps, not because of its historic conflict between Israel and the Arab world, but because of its cosmopolitan nightlife. The city receives 2.5 million visitors each year. Founded on an old port in 1909, its first signs of modernism came with buildings designed in the 30s by architects from the German school Bauhaus. They left a footprint of more than 4,000 designs, which created the complex known as White City, declared as World Heritage by UNESCO in 2003. Because its arid land was not suitable for crops, its first technology came in agriculture. Its political environment gave rise to technological advances in security, as well. Applications, such as instant messaging and internet telephony were also developed. Tel Aviv began to carve out its name as a center for business and scientific research. Today, it has “one of the most technologicallyadvanced communities in the world: more than 1,200 companies, and, of these, more than 600 are start-ups created by young adults,” stated Avner Warner, Director of Economic Development for the Municipality of Tel Aviv. Authorities not only provide incentives to companies, but also to their employees. The city’s strategic plan responded to needs of this population, transforming marginal zones into commercial centers, “attracting talented young people who want to work in an inspiring urban space,” the official explained to Casa Galería. It is estimated that one-third of Tel Aviv’s residents are under 35. In recent statements made in the press, Mayor Ron Huldai emphasized that “Tel Aviv has become a city that people use, not a city in which people live.” Larry Loev, Commercial Director at RAMOT, a technology transfer company at the University of Tel Aviv, highlighted that the influence of this type of innovation is evident among residents: “fuel is ordered online and delivered to your home without having to go to the store; to avoid traffic, smart GPS have traffic information, or alternatively, strategically-located bicycle stations can be accessed digitally; each aspect of life is coordinated through the internet, such as paying bills, making doctor appointments, making restaurant reservations and buying tickets to a show.”

At the same time, access to technology helps produce the industry’s own innovation: you won’t find an adolescent building a mobile application if he or she hasn’t accessed that technology,” stated Warner. Many of the expected scientific leaps could happen within the 15-to-20year timeframe, and according to Loev, with the world so interconnected, “innovations that are created in one country can quickly be adapted to others.” Soon, free internet will be offered to the entire city. In general, Israel is a country connected to the internet, with a monthly average of 38.3 hours, 60% more than the global average and only surpassed by Canada. When asked how to replicate Tel Aviv’s model, Warner said that “the most important lesson is to understand that developing an urban environment is what really drives economic growth.” Loev, on the other hand, highlighted support from authorities for research as key. “I would say that innovation is based on a national feeling, a discontentment with the status quo, and in which the government supports people to dare to try to change it. For cultural reasons this often comes from society’s youngest, whose heroes aren’t soccer players, but scientists and businesspeople. If those values existed in Costa Rica, it would make a huge difference in the future.”

One of these was the BMW Concept Active Tourer, a conceptual model that anticipates additional innovations foreseen for select cars in the compact automobile segment.
