ere we are in 2020! As every time, this year each of us has made good intentions and goals to be achieved, hoping that some dreams in the drawer could be revealed. For several years, one of my aspirations, and also that of the whole G&G _ Magazine team, is to respect our planet more and more. We aren’t unique in pursuing this goal! Also the Pantone Color Institute tries to sensitize us by identifying Classic Blue as the Color of the Year 2020. A reliable and reassuring shade that instills trust and hope - the right color for a world that needs peace and quiet. Although it's a simple color, unfortunately, it's no longer found so easily in nature: to see a clear blue sky or a clean sea, not invaded by chemicals and plastic is almost impossible. Then, we've reserved a rich selection that will help you insert this elegant shade into your interior. Sincerely, I hope that this color can influence our choices and our way of thinking by promoting the protection of the entire ecosystem. I invite every reader to try to look beyond and to engage with small gestures to protect the environment in which we live. G&G _ Magazine team and I support our planet every day by promoting Eco-sustainable Design and not by providing the hard copies of the magazine that weigh heavily on the environment. I’m sure we can make a difference to safeguard the Earth!

Guiniang Experience Store

Ippolito Fleitz Group has realised the interior design for the first Guiniang Experience Store in Shanghai. The Guiniang Group is a young company that produces the Chinese tradi-onal liquor, Baijiu. This store possesses an elegant, saturated and luxurious ambience, while s-ll allowing space for personal privacy. The concept translates the excep-onal care that Guiniang invests in the produc-on process into a world of sophis-cated materials. Everything is craqed in a very precise and high-quality way - from marble floors to an elaborate lamellae ceiling. The warm ligh-ng we have chosen reflects the natural colours and gently conducts the client through the store. For the high-quality crea-ons by Guiniang and the exclusive brand experience, we have used unique shapes, layers and materials – as unique as the taste of a high-quality Baijiu. www.ifgroup.org Photography by Sui Sicong

Nirjhara’s approach to sustainable luxury centers on 3 core pillars: Community, Land and Climate. At Nirjhara, guests are encouraged to take part in this approach to sustainable tourism through a variety of proac-ve and passive ini-a-ves. Nirjhara’s scope of ac-on towards a greener future extends from its immediate neighboring community to the broader ecosystem of Bali and its oceans, and to our planet as a whole.

Since taking over, Wendle has completed several major refurbishment programmes, enhancing the hotel’s facili-es by refreshing all guestrooms and suites and introducing a one-off collec-on of art and an-ques, including tradi-onal mid-century furnishings and authen-c 1950s art works. Subsequently, having acquired a further 10 acres of beachfront property, Hotel Esencia launched 11 new suites – six Beach Suites and five Jungle Suites – as well as beachfront restaurant, Mistura. S-ll fresh from the refurbishments, the bou-que resort then unveiled further addi-ons in Spring 2019, including the launch of two spectacular Penthouse Suites and two Master Beach Suites, taking the hotel’s total room and suite count to 40, plus two villas – as well as a new interna-onal Coffee Bar. This extension project also included the launch of interna-onally acclaimed Beeàar concept by Riccardo Giraudi, launching Beeàar Esencia in an innova-ve first for the region. Hotel Esencia is home to a handpicked collec-on of art and an-ques, making its décor so unique. With Wendle’s desire to reimagine the property came an en-re collec-on of furniture designed 86 | G&G _ Magazine

especially for the hotel in addi-on to hand-woven rugs, bed throws and tabletops which pay homage to mid-century Mexican and European art and design. Artwork by celebrated Spanish and La-n American ar-sts decorate the walls including works by Pablo Picasso, Fernando Botero and Eduardo San-ere. There are Pierre Jeanneret chairs, lamps by Serge Mouille and Pierre Guariche, and a table by world-renowned architect and designer Charlope Perriand. Public spaces are subtly filled with a music playlist conceived by Paris-based DJ Michel Gaubert and website illustrated by stylish Pierre La Tan anima-ons. Combining the modern and tradi-onal, the original design template was done by C.S. Valen-n, who spent a yea with Wendle when he first bought the hotel. Valen-n designed a bespoke collec-on of original furniture and rugs exclusively for the hotel and, had them craqed by a local ar-san – hand-woven rugs, bed throws and table tops truly pay homage to mid-century Mexican and European art and design. Hotel Esencia has Valen-n to thank for its strong original graphics and much of the furniture designed by him to complement Wendle’s own collec-on of handpicked collectables found in the Main House.

Hotel Esencia is home to three outdoor restaurants as well as a Beach Bar and Coffee Bar. Situated between the two main pools and the beach, Café Esencia places emphasis on seasonal ingredients and seafood, while the aptly named Mistura is a mul--cultural gastronomic experience under a towering beachfront palapa with spectacular 180° views. Beeàar Esencia is a name synonymous with meat lovers since its incep-on in Monaco in 2005 – and with restaurants now in Paris, Cannes, Luxembourg, Mykonos, Hong Kong and Mexico City – that brings an excep-onal new dining experience to the Riviera Maya that is completely exclusive to Hotel Esencia. The menu concept is simple, based on the finest high-quality ingredients and centred around three main pillars: ‘street food to share’, ‘great meats’ and ‘incredible dishes’. Beach Bar, located in our two storey beachfront palapa, is where people can savour the crea-ve signature cocktails and enjoy the warm sea breeze and the best views in the hotel.

The spa integrates hallmarks of modern wellbeing with ancient customs of cul-va-ng beauty, balance, and peace. Recently, the spa also added an innova-ve infrared sauna and hydromassage plunge pool. There is also a fully equipped Technogym gym, Pilates reformer and private trainers. Those who wish to sit back and relax can take advantage of sunrise yoga on Hotel Esencia’s open-air beachfront palapa.

The spa journey begins with a traditional Mayan kitchen laboratory where therapists tailor bespoke, restorative programs, using the purest ingredients harvested from the waters of the Caribbean and soil from the Mayan jungle. or many years Podgorze, the neighborhood where the residence, is located was forgopen but now it is the center of cultural and social life. In par-cular, it's an apartment placed in a new building in a border the district, next to the river Vistula. So it has the boundless view at the old Krakow’s district with its old churches towers and new buildings locates at the riverbank. All buildings tell a story, from the architecture of ancient Rome to the skyscrapers that dot our modern horizons. Without this story, buildings would be simple boxes of pure func-on. In architecture, a residence is more than a simple shelter. It is a story of the people that live there, the rela-onships between them, and the living that occurs when a home is occupied. The apartment was designed for a young businessman - living fast, very pedant and with a strong, raw taste of interiors. The design balances between permanence and lightness, a nod to the human experience of dreaming while grounded in a single place. Apartment was to supposed to reflect the character of the owner that loves raw materials and simple elegant spaces. So the studio has realised a design with the use of the existing elements of the apartment like reinforced concrete existing in structure of the building that was cleaned and polished. While the imperfections of concrete have been exposed and turned into an asset, a decorative element. Client was very

enthusiastic about this idea so he was happy about every scratch on a construction beam that can be compare to the white perfect surface of the wall. The entrance acts as a preview of the apartment a prelude to what awaits in the next rooms. There is presented a minimum of what the studio wanted to show to a random person knocking to the door. Concrete, smooth plaster, black - metal frame mirror reflecting the light coming from the hall (thanks to this even when the lights are off, the walls has reflections of daylight) and 300 kg solid oak beam - oiled and attached to the wall with six steel anchors. These materials will scroll throughout the flat, giving it a consistent character. In the living room large windows allow you to enjoy the view of the city. The flat has unlimited access to light and zero neighbors, which allowed to display the view. The raw spaces are insulated with soft furniture lines like oak shelves that house the library. Every detail of this project has been treated with care giving it the character. The spaces are closed in geometric order. Raw concrete is interspersed with a plaster

The kitchen laboratory with tabletops, open shelves allows you to present cooking skills to guests by the owner of the apartment. The wall along the long working space has been rebuilt from the concrete blocks neat welds and the loca-on of electrical connec-ons have been taken care of. Structure of papern gives industrial look - painted with special cover for the hospital rooms, it allows unrestricted cooking excesses without fear of order. The steel construc-on of black steel furniture houses all the necessary kitchen equipment. The construc-on over the island allows unlimited access to kitchen utensils and the cul-va-on of a garden with owers and spices.

In the master bedroom, the space around the bed is en-rely wood: the oor, walls and ceiling are lined with it. T

he project is an old Lebanese house that represents the mee-ng between harmonious culmina-on of heritage and modernity. It's divided into 2 parts: one side inhabits the living and common areas for family gatherings while the other side cater for the private areas and bedrooms. The entrance, marked by a wide door with windows, leads to a 6m high-ceiling white central hall, which is the main axis of the house, filled with daylight piercing from the main veranda of colorful ceramic--les and inhabi-ng exo-c plants, flowers and trees, edible vegetables, as well as beau-ful chants of humming birds. The furniture is en-rely custom-designed to each space. They rest as art pieces and subtly translates the func-on of each room. Light wireframe elements are produced to discretely infiltrate the space in the communal areas whereas warm crea-ons fill the in-mate spaces.

Op-mizing the natural light, a warm palepe integrates rich layers of textures and colors; walnut and oak wood, oxidized brass and copper, pa-na walls, large arches of wooden window frames, Italian calacapa marble oors in the communal spaces and recuperated ceramic tradi-onal -les integrated with wood in the private areas. 106 | G&G _ Magazine

Distribu-ng onto floor-to-ceiling carved doors, the main space invites its inhabitants to 6 colorful peripheral rooms; following the client’s desires, each room is carefully designed with a different func-on and style to sa-sfy their lifestyle and needs. A large arched mint-green door invites to the breakfast room. Inspired by colonial interiors, it sits in an authen-c barrel vault painted in vibrant bloody red with a central wooden oak table, surrounded by exposed shelves to store tableware collec-ons gathered from different parts of the world. The all-white kitchen, sits in a cross-vault highlighted by a large white carved wood latcework, inspired by tradi-onal mashrabiya. The counters and drawers are executed in corian and custom-designed ceramic -les for the flooring.

Next to the kitchen, there is the lateral dining room painted in a soft cinder rose. In this room, exposed wooden beams emphasize the ceiling structure and a custom-designed table in glass highlights its copper leg structure. As in every part of the house, here a diptych photograph is hanged on one side of the wall and a collection of limoge porcelain on the other side. The chimney room is another space for family gathering. It is highlighted by an integrated library metal and brass shelf surrounding a big central fireplace, executed in ice-white marble with copper and brass incisions on the outside and basalt stones from the inside. A large stained bronze mirror hangs on top of it. 108 | G&G _ Magazine

The office is painted in a “vert de terre” green to s-mulate peace and concentra-on while working. Simple black metal shelves are hanged on the walls and filled with books from all ar-s-c disciplines; art, architecture, poetry, and literature. A long walnut table supported by a single panel glass sits in front of 3 large arched windows and overlooks the en-re central axis and main gallery space.

A deep couch in velvet emerald and yellow cushions sparks up the room with its colors. The walls are surrounded by lighting artworks and an integrated black metal library displays collected accessories.

The TV room is the only room inten-onally executed with a low-ceiling and painted in royal navy blue to portray a cosy environment. While a guest WC is painted in dark green with woodenframed photographs dispersed across the walls to amuse the guests. The master bedroom is composed of 2 spaces; the bed that lies in a cross-barrel vault and a small living room with a rota-ng TV.

he house is set in the 32,000-acre Borana Conservancy in the savanna grasslands of the Ewaso ecosystem on the Laikipia Plateau in Kenya. The client wished a new holiday family retreat with a modern approach; indeed he didn't want a tradi-onal African thatched roof with dark interiors but a design that merged African and European styles, something very dierent to lodges found in this part of Kenya. The property has been tucked into a low southern slope to allow the user to experience a connec-on with the surrounding nature and close to the watering hole where wildlife oqen gathers. to face south to enjoy the breathtaking views of the snow-capped peaks of Mount Kenya. It took many site visits to ensure that the buildings and terraces were perfectly posi-oned with the sun’s movement, sheltered from the wind and hidden from view. It was also essen-al that all the rooms received plenty of natural light so to ensure this a daylight study was carried out. Aqer a winding path amongst the savannah grassland from which leads down a staircase carved out of a rocky outcrop, it is placed a large arched -mber door front entrance comes to view. The front door opens up to a green oasis courtyard garden set within colonnaded, groin vaulted walkways.

The living areas are accessed from the courtyard. A large living/dining room on the southernmost side with 4.5m high exposed timber joisted ceilings, large arched crittal windows a large yet simple stone fireplace. Everything is handmade by the local craftsmen with typical materials like meru stone from a local quarry for the walls and grevilia timber for the ceiling beams. There is a breakfast/bar dining area on the

southwestern corner that leads onto the pool terrace with an inďŹ nity pool on the western side where one can enjoy the views of the wildlife amongst the yellow fever trees and rich grasslands. The pool terrace has a large outdoor dining table, and pergola to protect from the hot midday sun, where one can enjoy a meal cooked on the nearby outdoor barbeque and pizza oven.

he main premise of the clients was to obtain open spaces where the main protagonist was natural light. The aim was to provide each area with a relaxed and casual style according to the environment. The use of neutral colors is enhanced using a very soq color range that conveys comfort and tranquility. All the spaces were redistributed again, returning their essence and soul and obtaining homogeneous and wide areas. In the day area you can dis-nguish four diaphanous and well dieren-ated spaces. This area includes: the living room, the reading corner, a small dining room and the kitchen with a peninsula for breakfast.

128 | G&G _ Magazine

For the kitchen was included an extractor hood flush with the ceiling was chosen, keeping the space clean and clear. While the little dining room enjoys suspended lamp of Thonet Viena that gives a character to the ambiance.

The reading corner was specially created to be able to enjoy the renova-on in front of the original ďŹ replace in the house. This area is connected visually with living room where there is no element that hinders vision. This area has views of both the porch and the rest of the plot, which we can ďŹ nd surrounded by nature. Both ambiances have stylish furniture and accessories - a lot of them were designed and made by The Room Studio like tables, wood jars and shelves.

As for the materials, The Room Studio opted for the main use of natural oak woods throughout the house, as well as comfortable tex-les using subtle colors. The aim was to provide the house with a contemporary style and restore the freshness by which it is characterized. All this was combined with the -melessness in the dierent environments and obtaining natural light in each of the areas, together, a range of neutral and simple shades are used throughout the home.

Mainly the outside area was expanded, where two very functional corners were obtained. On the one hand, we find the outdoor dining room that can accommodate a large number of diners thanks to the work bank that was carried out. In addition, the back wall was opened to gain luminosity and increase the visibility of the rest of the house. On the other hand, we find a rest area with light furniture and a color palette that continue the same line as inside.

In the night area the suite room is designed giving it a contemporary, timeless but contemporary style. Decorative textile papers were placed on the wall of the headboard of the bed following the tonalities of the rest of the house. The Room Studio sought to combine textures, different shades and some simple print.

134 | G&G _ Magazine

In the bathroom of the suite room a porcelain tile with textures was placed, played with the combination of color, geometry and roughness of the pieces. Elements are selected that complete together in tones consistent with the environment and with matt finishes. The general lines used are clean and continuous, avoiding irregularities and seeking their purity. These are combined with very balanced colors and always being part of the same palette of tones, without eccentricities.

REFLECTED IN THE MIRROR OMA, an international practice of architecture and urbanism, presents 121 East 22nd - its first ground up building and residential complex in the famous New York neighborhood, Manhattan. Photography by Iwan Baan, Laurian Ghinitoiu, Evan Joseph

“We are excited to complete OMA’s first groundup building in New York, a city that has been central to the firm’s philosophy. The design appropriately responds to and harnesses the energy of the city and duality of the site’s urban context— the dynamic intersection of Gramercy Park and Madison Square is expressed by a three dimensional, prismatic corner that introduces a new identity to the neighborhood while the façade remains contextual to its neighbors. Collaboratively with Toll Brothers City Living, Gemdale, SLCE and INC. we have conceived a new, dynamic building for the neighborhood that communicates both history and modernity.” - Shohei Shigematsu

138 | G&G _ Magazine

S

hohei Shigematsu, the Director of the New York office, has been a driving force behind many of OMA’s projects, leading the firm’s diverse pormolio in the Americas for the past decade. With an emphasis on maximum specificity and process-oriented design, Sho is also responsible for delivering this project, providing design leadership and direc-on from their conceptual onset to completed construc-on. The design was conceived from its site which straddles two separate and different neighborhoods: a quiet residen-al area surrounding Gramercy Park, an enclosed and private garden, and the bustling commercial space around Madison Square Park, a public park that hosts an array of ac-vi-es. The L-shaped site posed an opportunity to be informed by the two neighborhoods while ac-va-ng three street fronts. The concept emerges from this dualis-c condi-on, referencing Cubist artwork, in which objects are viewed from a mul-tude of viewpoints rather than a single one to represent the subject in a greater context. As such, the North Tower conveys the mee-ng of the two neighborhoods, realized through two interlocking planes that come together at 23rd and Lexington to form a dis-nct, three-dimensional corner. This ar-cula-on evokes a collage assembled from various reflec-ons of its surroundings. Ver-cally, the corner planes bend in and out, crea-ng unique views from the interiors up to the sky and down to the streets. On the street level, the corner is carved inwards, to widen the sidewalk and establish a clear entry point to the ground floor retail. From the expressive corner, the building’s two facades become more contextual as it nears its neighboring prewar buildings. Its precast panels become bolder as the façade transi-ons away from the corner, seamlessly establishing a visible gradient from new to historic. The black concrete highlights the windows to accentuate the grada-on.

The three-dimensional ar-cula-on con-nues on the 13-story South Tower, which features an undula-ng grid of punched windows overlooking 22nd Street. The tower houses the main residen-al entry and a funnel-shaped lobby within leads to an enclosed breezeway and central valley that connect the two towers. 140 | G&G _ Magazine

The valley is a calm oasis amidst the busyness of 23rd Street and Lexington and is centered around residen-al ameni-es and balconies, establishing an inside-outside living within the complex. The interior façade of the two towers facing the courtyard resonate with the three-dimensionality

142 | G&G _ Magazine

of the exterior façade—a ribbon of volumetric balconies provide a sculptural view up to the sky. Although similar in form, the valley’s materiality of light, perforated aluminum enhances daylight while giving the courtyard its own unique identity.

A CASCADE OF EXPERIENCES Among the Austrian Alps, in a small village named Lermoos, noa* unveils its latest project: a wellness area devised as a theatre with numerous different interpretations of the available space. A new, fresh take on the traditional Spa concept. Photography by Alex Filz 144 | G&G _ Magazine

“The majestic and powerful presence of the mountain itself was our test bench. The Zugspitze generally – and its beauty, strength, and formal complexity specifically – was our inspiration and the project’s protagonist. The new wellness area is conceived as a theatre’s stalls, an ideal location to admire that extraordinary masterpiece. Guests are cocooned in a relaxing environment which harmonises with the environment. Our challenge is to create structures which expand and intensify the perception of spaces, thus creating restorative areas which stir new emotions in visitors.” - Christian Rottensteiner, architect

T

his new wellness area named Mohr Life Resort is situated in Lermoos, one of the oldest skiing areas in Tirol just an 80-km drive from Innsbruck. Here noa* leverages the incredible nature at the heart of Tirol, Austria, to design a contemporary and ‘s-rring’ building. The glass and cement are in constant dialogue with the environment’s morphology, culture, and history. The building features a unique view across the spacious Ehrwalder Becken valley peppered with old farmhouses and barns; what’s more, the imposing 3,000 meters of the Zugspitze mountain - which represents a geographical border between Austria and

146 | G&G _ Magazine

Germany. The new wellness area at the Mohr Life Resort stretches out across 600 sqm and features a roofed infrastructure built from scratch and an outdoor area with a swimming pool.

The glass and cement structure extends horizontally to create an ar-ficial rib, mirrored by the dry-stone walls running along its side. The project was specifically designed considering the gently sloping terrain and develops across two levels: this creates a height difference which allowed for the crea-on of the swimming pool. A sober and light building in the landscape obtained by the aggrega-on of simple shapes: glass cubes placed across the two levels create the structural grid for the edifice’s skeleton.

148 | G&G _ Magazine

The swimming pool represents the natural extension of the wellness area. It extends into the open and features chill-out areas boas-ng different sensorial experiences. Six ‘island boxes’ dot the water basin, reflec-ng the structure overlooking the pool: however, the group of shapes virtually dissolves and opens up the view across the landscape as much as possible. Both the indoor and outdoor elements of the pool feature ‘islands’ offering guests original and essen-al experiences.

Using a reflec-ve glass surface delivers an unexpected, scenic effect: the different shapes virtually fade into the background and meld into a ‘screen’ mirroring the gargantuan silhouepe of the Zugspitze. And there’s more. The pool runs flush along the length of the Spa’s glass front, thus doubling the image of the mountain thanks to impacmul chroma-c mirror effects.

While the outer structure is all lines and stark shapes, its traits become softer, more organic, enveloping the viewer into its embrace once inside the building. The tension created by the contrast between indoor and outdoor language enriches the building both aesthetically and formally. The relaxation areas were developed to look like theatre stages with a view across the mountain. Every ‘booth’ includes two deckchairs featuring different designs: open, spacious areas with huge swings hanging from the ceiling enshrouded by drapery or metal cones framing the mountain alternate with closed balconies delivering increased privacy and relaxation with an omnipresent mountain view. Specific light sources where used to provide illumina-on, including atmosphere lights inspired by a glass sphere. Depending on the environment, the fixtures come in different versions: scenic lamps following the twists and turns of the spiral staircase, or a thread of light bulbs reminiscent of the lights in a theatre’s dressing room. 150 | G&G _ Magazine

The ground oor features a private lounge; a lobby and bar for refreshments; a Spa and scenic sauna for approximately 20 people featuring a mini bistro reminiscent of cinema halls, as well as changing booths and showers.

CAPTURE NATURE

WITTMAN ESTES ARCHITECTURE+LANDSCAPE PROJECTED A SERIES OF FAMILY CABINS HIDDEN IN THE FOREST AND OVERLOOKING WASHINGTON'S HOOD CANAL, LOCATED ON A 1.13ACRE SITE ATOP A BLUFF ON A WOODED SITE ON THE WESTERN SHORE OF HOOD CANAL IN THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST. “As avid bird watchers and naturalists, the clients wanted an indoor outdoor family retreat that would immerse them in the stillness of the forest and capture the delicate Washington sunlight and views toward Hood Canal and the Olympic Mountains to the west. - Matt Wittman

156 | G&G _ Magazine

Built on the site in 1962, the original dark and opaque cedar cabin leq the owners feeling cut off from nature, and they asked for a indoor outdoor retreat that would allow them to be closer to the land and also house an expanded program of three addi-onal bedrooms and sleeping quarters for their extended family. The project has three elements: the repurposed 20’x20’ footprint of the original cabin, the cabin addi-on and a new bunkhouse and bathroom to the north. The clients had careers in hydrology and forestry (and had a deep love for trees, soils, and the richness of the natural world), and wildlife photography (with extensive interna-onal travel to capture images of birds and other animals in their na-ve habitats). Their grown children work as natural resource scien-sts and spend much of their -me deeply engaged with the outdoors. With family living across the country, the family yearned for a place to draw them together in one place. The vision was a retreat where the family

could be together and celebrate their passion for being outdoors and connect with the na-ve flora and fauna of Hood Canal. The clients wanted a retreat where they could watch birds and take in the nature of the Hood Canal. While they loved modern architecture, they did not want a building that was overly expressive of itself. They asked for a set of simple structures that would allow them to be close to the land. This resonated with Wipman, who had an apprecia-on for the simple vernacular structures of his rural childhood on a ranch in northern Idaho, and ac-vely designs buildings allowing people to “experience the beauty of nature through architecture.” The family sought a place where their friends and family could gather together while also experiencing a moment of solitude and reflec-on. The three single story volumes with large glass openings, sliding doors, and con-nuous decks allow for such gathering and reflec-on.

“Unlike most birds, the killdeer doesn’t bring outside vegetation to build its nest - it pulls away the existing brush, burrowing into the existing forest, and nesting on the ground.

The architecture defers to the landscape, inspired by nature and in particular the native killdeer bird. This project seeks a similar relationship with the ground that feels both connected to and protected from the elements of nature.

Reclaimed beams and siding from the original cabin were re-purposed as countertops and interior cladding. Simple details and a restrained material palepe kept the construc-on budget to a minimum.

160 | G&G _ Magazine

Sunlight warms the plywood walls and ceilings, grazing the warm cedar boards and cast-in-place concrete—allowing shadow and light to transform the simple interior into something more complex and subtle. In the main cabin, the indoor-outdoor kitchen has a pass-through window that extends the interior countertop into the outdoor concrete counter and built in wood barbecue. There is a built-in Murphy bed that allows the main cabin to be a flexible sleeping area when needed. High clerestory windows allow views outdoors and natural light inside. A reclaimed cast iron tub in the master bath creates the feeling of soaking in the outdoors without interrup-ng moments of repose. Outside, the rough sawn cedar siding and cement panel finishes pa-na naturally over -me un-l the cabin volumes converge with the colors of the forest. This inside-outside connec-on is how the architects approach building sensi-vely in nature.

SOCIAL EQUITY

Responding to an urgent need in Los Angeles for housing catered to formerly homeless veterans and chronically homeless and low-income households, LOHA collaborated with Clifford Beers Housing to transform a vacant, unimproved lot in South LA into a 100% affordable housing community. L

OHA’s LEED Gold design for this project aims to create an environment that encourages health and community, acknowledging that successful social spaces come through a variety of planned and organic strategies. LOHA incorporates several design strategies that open the building towards the street and foster a sense of community within the neighborhood. Priori-zing social equity, health, and well-being of residents over isola-on, we opted for an L-shaped typology that allows every apartment to receive sunlight and cross ven-la-on, reducing the need for hea-ng, cooling, and ar-ficial light, and allowing for the inclusion of an elevated green pa-o for residents to relax and socialize away from the noise of the street. This building employs the latest strategies in environmentally responsible, forward-thinking green design to maximize space and benefit the en-re community. The building was cer-fied LEED Gold and features include high-efficiency hea-ng and cooling, appliances and fixtures, solar water hea-ng, electric vehicle charging and bike parking. At the street level LOHA’s design capitalizes on a requirement for on-site parking by crea-ng an elevated community garden and social hub for residents and neighbors, that sits atop the street level parking. In order to establish a street presence, the parking is tucked behind a storefront space and a widened staircase that connects the street to the community spaces one level up. This stoop is a gathering space and a public gesture, encouraging the types of resident and neighborhood interac-on oqen missing in suppor-ng housing. The goal of the two retail units at the street level, is to generate income that will help subsidize the housing while providing workforce training to residents so that they can transi-on back into society.

The units are designed for individuals and families, ranging in size from one to three bedrooms each with their own bathroom, and all are equipped with kitchens and living spaces. Tenants are encouraged to use the shared ameni-es in the community room, which has shared kitchen and dining areas for cooking classes, potlucks, group therapy, and other planned / impromptu gatherings.

168 | G&G _ Magazine

An outdoor garden with drought-tolerant plants and raised-bed edible gardens connects the community room to the living spaces, giving residents a place to relax and socialize. All the units are accessed through exterior walkways. While the unit layouts are efficiently identical on each floor, the walkways vary in width for a more dynamic, staggered elevation and to create more informal gathering spaces and opportunities for residents to socialize. Further advancing previous experience working with Clifford Beers Housing and other supportive housing organizations like the Skid Row Housing Trust, LOHA’s design acknowledges the successful track record these housing complexes have had with integrating various populations, bringing supportive services in-house, and creating uplifting living environments for people to thrive.
