Unheimlich – inquiétante étrangeté est ce qui vient à l’esprit lorsque l’on est confronté pour la première fois aux installations et performances de l’artiste américain Brent Birnbaum. On se demande dans quel univers étrange nous venons de pénétrer. Certes, il y a là des images issues du quotidien (objets de consommation tels que des bouteilles, des ustensiles de cuisine, des affiches, des teeshirts, des livres…), mais l’assemblage de ces objets les uns avec les autres nous égare et, à mesure que nous nous laissons faire, commence à nous guider vers l’artiste lui-même.

Brent Birnbaum détourne ces objets connus, anodins, au travers d’installations parfois monumentales. Son travail de recherche et sa démarche artistique ouvrent un champ d’investigations dans notre conception du monde actuel.

Il joue avec les codes de la consommation de masse, nos nouvelles idoles, la société américaine et ses travers. Il se moque des équilibres fébriles du monde.

Unheimlich—the uncanny —is what springs to mind when first confronted with the installations and performances of American artist Brent Birnbaum: we begin to wonder about the strange world we’ve just entered. True, the imagery relates to everyday things (consumer items such as bottles, kitchen utensils, posters, tee-shirts, books, etc.), but the way they’re all thrown together leads us astray— and as we wander, they lead us toward the artist himself.

Birnbaum subverts banal, familiar objects in his occasionally monumental installations. His artistic approach and experimentation explore a field of investigation concerning our conception of today’s world. He plays on conventions of consumerism, on our modern idols, and on American society with all its foibles. He pokes fun at the world’s feverish balancing tricks.

Accumulateur d’objets, collectionneur de bric et de broc, Birnbaum procède d’abord par l’installation. Il crée des scènes ayant chacune une identité propre, tel un rébus monumental.

Ensuite vient l’élaboration de la performance. L’artiste aime à souligner qu’il n’est pas un performeur inné, mais que la performance est une évidence, qu’elle s’impose à lui petit à petit lorsqu’il crée et qu’elle est là pour surligner l’installation, la compléter, la rendre plus vivante et vice-versa.

Méticuleux, il ne laisse aucun détail au hasard. Les objets assemblés, amoncelés ou entassés se connectent spontanément avec la performance qui se met en place. Le lien entre corps et objet est intrinsèque, invisible.

Perturbateur, il ne laisse pas son public dans la passivité.

Souvent, ce dernier est invité à participer, à intervenir dans l’œuvre finale. L’œuvre de Brent Birnbaum prend forme quand objet, corps et public interagissent et sont en adéquation les uns avec les autres. Le résultat final est le fruit de la symbiose de ces trois acteurs.

C’est en 2004, alors qu’il vient tout juste d’arriver à New York, que Birnbaum élabore sa première performance intitulée No Man is an Island. Le protocole de l’action est simple : le public se trouve d’un côté, l’artiste de l’autre. Il est assis en tailleur au centre de la pièce. Ses dreadlocks sont accrochées à un module au-dessus de sa tête. Celui-ci représente une île faite de mousses dont les racines sont en fait les cheveux de l’artiste.

Devant lui est posée une paire de ciseaux. Il reste paisible et attend que les spectateurs s’approchent de lui pour lui couper une mèche de cheveux. À chaque coup de ciseaux, un bruit sourd se fait entendre, comme si l’île souffrait physiquement

As an accumulator of objects and a collector of brica-brac, Birnbaum begins with the installation. He first creates scenes, each of which has its own identity, like some huge rebus. Then comes development of the performance. Birnbaum likes to stress that he is not a born performer but that performance became an obvious necessity, steadily imposing itself on his art: it is designed to reinforce, complete, and impart life to the installation— and vice versa.

The meticulous Birnbaum leaves no detail to chance.

Assembled objects, whether piled or heaped together, connect spontaneously with the performance as it begins to take place.

The link between body and object is intrinsic if invisible.

The trouble-making Birnbaum won’t allow his audience to remain passive. Just the opposite: the beholder is often invited to participate, to enter into the final work. Birnbaum’s work takes shape when object, body, and beholder interact, striking the right balance. The final result is the fruit of a symbiosis among these three players.

It was in 2004, just after arriving in New York, that Birnbaum developed his first performance, titled No Man is an Island.

The protocol for the action was simple: the audience on one side, the artist on the other. He sat cross-legged in the middle of the room; his dreadlocks were attached to a module above his head, representing a moss-covered island whose roots were in fact Birnbaum’s hair. A pair of scissors lay in front of the artist. He sat there calmly, waiting for members of the audience to approach and cut one lock of hair. With every cut, an indistinct sound was heard, as though the island were

No Man is an Island est un jeu à la frontière entre le grotesque et l’exhibitionnisme. L’artiste vogue entre ces deux registres avec aisance. Chaque mouvement est minutieusement assumé. Pourtant, on sent la fragilité de l’artiste, sa vulnérabilité face au public. On ressent là son désir de repousser ses limites de confort, ses limites physiques aussi.

Dans No Man is an Island, l’interaction entre l’artiste et le spectateur reste encore relativement réduite. Nous sommes plus proches ici d’un exercice de style que d’une véritable volonté de chambouler les codes de la performance.

Cependant, on voit poindre le pouvoir implicite du spectateur. Sans lui, pas de performance. Il est la clé de sa mise en forme et de sa finalisation. Au fur et à mesure que l’implication de l’artiste va s’intensifier, il conservera le lien privilégié mis en place lors de cette première performance avec son public.

Depuis 2004, la performance a pris de plus en plus d’ampleur dans la démarche artistique de Brent Birnbaum et en constitue un élément important. Les liens qu’il tisse entre les objets qu’il crée et les actions performatives sont de plus en plus complexes. D’ailleurs, immédiatement après No Man is an Island, il s’est consacré plus largement au développement d’installations. L’artiste explique qu’il aura eu besoin de passer par l’un puis par l’autre de façon séparée avant de ressentir la nécessité de joindre les deux.

No Man is an Island played on the borderline between the ludicrous and the exhibitionistic, with Birnbaum moving easily across those two registers. Every gesture was meticulously assumed. And yet the artist’s fragility, his vulnerability with respect to the public was detectible—the audience sensed his desire to challenge his own sense of comfort and push his physical limits.

The interaction between artist and beholder was still relatively limited in No Man is an Island. It was more an exercise in style than a determined effort to overturn performance codes. And yet the implicit power of the audience already began to emerge—without the audience, there could be no performance. The audience was the key to its implementation and completion. Even as Birnbaum’s own involvement has intensified, he has maintained this special link established during that very first performance in public.

Since 2004 performance has assumed greater scope within Birnbaum’s work, becoming a major feature of his oeuvre. The connections he establishes between the objects he creates and his performative actions have become increasingly complex. For that matter, immediately after No Man is an Island he devoted himself more fully to developing installations. He has stated that he felt a need to go from one to the other independently before experiencing the urge to bring them together.

C’est à cette période qu’il réalise notamment la série des Snuggie Prayer Rugs. Comme héritées des ready-made de Marcel Duchamp, les Snuggie Prayer Rugs sont des couvertures à manches dont les bras sont cousus à des tapis de prière islamiques. L’assemblage des deux donne lieu à un ensemble anthropomorphique étrange. Littéralement « sans tête », donc sans identité réelle, ces toiles colorées sont suspendues à hauteur d’homme pour mieux interpeller le spectateur. L’artiste cherche volontairement à choquer et à surprendre. L’économie de la forme proposée est là pour mieux apprivoiser celui qui regarde. Alors que leur objectif est de construire un espace isolé et intime de concentration vers la prière, les tapis sont ici mis en évidence comme un cadeau fait au spectateur. Ils attirent notre œil et déstabilisent nos certitudes. Notre sentiment est partagé : sommes-nous en train de recevoir quelque présent ou bien dérangeons-nous un être fantôme dans sa prière quotidienne ? À nouveau, l’artiste américain joue avec le spectateur. La simplicité de la forme présentée n’est qu’un leurre. L’artiste dépeint une critique acerbe de la société américaine en la présentant sous l’image d’un Snuggie, objet populaire des ménagères friandes de séries télévisées. Associé à un tapis de prière parfois partiellement découpé, donc amputé de sa fonction initiale, le Snuggie devient le symbole et la critique d’une société américaine qui adule la consommation de masse au point d’être prête à s’agenouiller devant elle et de se laisser abrutir par les médias.

D’autres séries d’installations seront réalisées pendant cette même période. Toutes ont comme point commun de vouloir provoquer une réaction virulente, parfois même violente, chez le spectateur. À l’heure d’Internet et des communications aseptisées entre les personnes, Brent Birnbaum souhaite rencontrer des personnes actives et impliquées. À travers sa démarche artistique, il cherche

That was the period when he notably produced his series of Snuggie Prayer Rugs. As though inherited from Marcel Duchamp’s ready-mades, Snuggie Prayer Rugs were sleeved blankets attached to Islamic prayer rugs. This combination of the two produced a strange, anthropomorphic whole. Literally “headless,” hence with no real identity, these colorful works were hung at human height, the better to strike the viewer.

The artist was deliberately seeking to shock and surprise.

Birnbaum’s economy of means tended to bring the beholder out of his or her shell. Whereas their purpose is to construct a personal, private space for concentrating on prayer, the rugs were here presented as a gift to the viewer. They drew the eye, challenging the beholder’s certainties and creating a divided feeling—was a gift being offered or was a ghostly person at prayer being disturbed?

Once again, Birnbaum was playing with the beholder of his work. The straightforwardness of the pieces on show was illusory. The artist was in fact formulating a pointed criticism of American society by exhibiting these “Snuggies”, a popular item in households hooked on TV series. When combined with a prayer rug—sometimes partially cut and therefore stripped of its initial purpose—Snuggies became a symbol and a critique of an American society so enamored of mass consumption that it will kneel before the god of consumerism and allow the media to render it mindless.

Birnbaum produced other installations during that same period.

All displayed a desire to trigger a virulent, sometimes even violent, reaction in the beholder. In the age of the Internet and impersonal contact between people, the artist wanted to find active, involved human beings. Through his art he was seeking to raise awareness.

Little by little, his way of perceiving the role of the beholder and the

L’obstination devient nécessité et la nécessité prend une forme physique qui se matérialise de nouveau dans la performance.

La performance sera de nouveau à l’ordre du jour avec l’œuvre Ice Ice Maybe qu’il réalise en 2010 à New York. Invité par le collectif No Longer Empty à participer à une exposition regroupant une vingtaine d’artistes, Birnbaum devient, le temps d’un soir, le sosie du rappeur américain Vanilla Ice et passe la soirée à signer des autographes lesquels sont en réalité des œuvres sur papier de l’artiste américain Tom Sanford. Le lieu est intégralement rempli d’objets en tout genre (piles de livres, pochettes de disques, CD, tee-shirts, etc.) affichant tous le portrait du véritable chanteur. Après certaines transformations physiques et un relooking, l’illusion est totale : le public croit voir dans cet usurpateur d’un soir le véritable chanteur.

Avec Ice Ice Maybe, Brent Birnbaum ouvre une brèche dans sa façon de penser la relation triangulaire entre installation, performance et public. Pour la première fois, on assiste à une réelle interaction : au milieu de la pièce, les spectateurs, l’artiste en action et les œuvres présentées constituent un territoire unifié.

L’interaction atteindra son paroxysme avec Bureau of Apology laquelle prend forme pour la première fois au printemps 2012. À la différence de Ice Ice Maybe, qui s’intégrait dans le cadre d’une exposition collective, Bureau of Apology est une installation all-over et en solo à la galerie LAB. La galerie est située dans un quartier d’affaires de New York.

beholder’s involvement in his art became crucial. His persistence in this path became a necessity, a necessity that would be physically materialized, once again, through performance.

The performance aspect of Birnbaum‘s work came to the fore again with Ice Ice Maybe, presented in New York in 2010. Invited by the No Longer Empty collective to participate in a group show of some twenty artists, Birnbaum turned himself for an evening into a doppelganger of the American rapper Vanilla Ice, signing autographs that were in fact works on paper by the American artist Tom Sanford. The venue was literally packed with objects of all kinds (piles of books, record jackets, CDs, tee-shirts, etc.) that all featured the portrait of the real singer. After a makeover and some physical transformations, the illusion was total—the audience thought the temporary imposter was the real performing artist.

With Ice Ice Maybe, Birnbaum reached a watershed in his way of conceiving the triangular relationship between installation, performance, and audience. For the first time, true interaction took place: the audience in attendance, the artist in action, and the works on show constituted a unified realm in the middle of the room.

Such interaction has attained an extreme state with Bureau of Apology, first presented in the spring of 2012. Unlike Ice Ice Maybe, which was part of a group show, Bureau of Apology was a solo, all-over installation at the LAB gallery, located in a business district in New York. Painted, for the occasion, in shades of purple, the gallery was turned into an office, a kind of hybrid space halfway between business premises and art installation. The artist himself mutated into a character halfway between civil servant

d’affaires et installation artistique. L’artiste lui-même se mue en un personnage entre fonctionnaire et prédicateur. Il se fait assister par une actrice qui joue le rôle de secrétaire.

Le lieu étant entièrement vitré, ceux qui restent à l’extérieur deviennent spectateurs, alors que les personnes à l’intérieur sont les « objets animés » de l’action en cours. Le chaland est accueilli par la secrétaire et est ensuite présenté au personnage incarné par l’artiste qui lui soumet trois questions.

Après y avoir répondu de façon anonyme, le participant est invité à déposer les réponses dans une urne et ressort. La participation à la performance s’arrête au moment de la sortie.

Dès lors, le participant devient lui-même spectateur de ce qui se passe à l’intérieur. Comme le lieu est entièrement vitré, il permet un rapport particulier entre l’espace performatif et l’espace du spectateur passif à l’extérieur.

Lors du week-end du DUMBO Arts Festival à l’automne 2012, Birnbaum élabore une deuxième version dans laquelle le protocole évolue. Tout d’abord, le lieu du déroulement : il s’agit cette fois d’un container placé au centre d’un parking à ciel ouvert. L’artiste conserve le principe de Bureau of Apology mais en modifie la présentation. Cette fois-ci, c’est lui qui accueille les participants, explique brièvement le déroulement et pose de sommaires questions qui ne manquent pas de déstabiliser.

Comme à son habitude, il brouille les pistes. La secrétaire remet ensuite un questionnaire aux participants qu’ils doivent aller compléter dans un isoloir adjacent au bureau. L’endroit est exigu et tapissé de miroirs. Les éléments de décoration, généralement récurrents, « happent » les participants pour les engloutir dans l’univers de l’artiste. L’immersion est totale.

The premises being entirely glassed in, the people on the outside became spectators whereas the people inside were “live objects” of the action underway. Customers were welcomed by the secretary and then introduced to the character played by Birnbaum, who asked them three questions.

After having replied anonymously, the participants were asked to place their answers in a box and to leave. Participation in the performance ended when they left, the participant becoming a spectator of what was happening inside. The entirely glass-walled space therefore made it possible to create a special relationship between the performative space and the passive, spectator space outside.

During the weekend DUMBO Arts Festival in the fall of 2012, Birnbaum developed a second version with a different protocol. First of all, the venue: this time it took place in a container in the middle of an outdoor parking lot.

Birnbaum retained the basic principle of Bureau of Apology but changed the presentation. This time he himself greeted participants, briefly explained the way things worked, and asked short questions that were inevitably unsettling. As usual, he complicated the issue. The secretary then handed the participants a questionnaire, which they had to fill out in a booth next to the bureau. The booth was small and lined with mirrors. The usually repetitive features of Birnbaum’s interior decoration “trap” participants, pulling them into the artist’s universe. Immersion is total. Unlike the first version,
