Les non-initiés y verront d’emblée les stéréotypes populaires associés au metal, tels que l’imagerie morbide, une musique (très) agressive portée par les hurlements d’un « chanteur », des fans déchaînés aux cheveux longs vêtus de t-shirts imprimés à l’effigie de leur groupe favori (le plus souvent ornés d’images aussi explicites que les noms et textes qui les accompagnent) ; parfois s’y ajoutent même des idées (souvent fausses) de croyances sataniques ou autres déviances. Rares sont ceux qui s’intéresseront aux réelles thématiques abordées par ces groupes dans leur musique et aux influences musicales de leurs compositions. Pourtant, derrière leur image ouvertement provocatrice se cache une réflexion intense sur notre société et ses maux, accompagnée d’un refus de s’y intégrer. Les mouvements les plus extrêmes du metal se rapprochent des avant-gardes musicales : expérimentation sonore et composition novatrice étant aussi au cœur de l’approche des pionniers du genre.

Comme pour toute sous-culture, la rébellion contre le système reste évidemment le mot d’ordre. C’est cette rébellion affirmée qui intrigue et provoque une première rencontre avec le genre – souvent à l’adolescence. Pour ma part, un premier contact timide s’est fait par le biais d’une cassette de Iron Maiden empruntée à ma grande sœur à la fin des années 1980. Mon intérêt éveillé, je me suis plongé tête baissée dans cette culture, attiré par le non-conformisme et le sentiment de liberté que l’écoute de cette musique me procurait à l’époque. À force, les goûts personnels se définissent et s’affinent. Les plus aventureux se dirigeront vers les genres les plus extrêmes : thrash, death metal et black metal, ou encore grindcore et noise, sans compter tous les sous-genres et les ramifications complexes de l’« underground » du monde metal.

Le genre prône l’indépendance et le non-conformisme.

Porté par l’esprit « DIY » (Do it Yourself), il devient aisément un moyen de s’exprimer et de s’impliquer, même

For the uninitiated, this instantly evokes common metal stereotypes such as morbid imagery, (highly) aggressive music fueled by the shrieks of a “singer,” raving, longhaired fans wearing T-shirts with their favourite band’s logo (usually also with images as explicit as the group’s name and lyrics); and sometimes even ideas (often false) about satanic beliefs and other deviancies. Few people pay close attention to the actual themes of the bands’ lyrics, or to their musical influences. But behind the openly provocative image lies a profound reflection on our society and its ills, accompanied by a refusal to be part of it. The most extreme metal movements are akin to the musical avant-gardes in that the pioneers made sound experimentation and innovative composition central to the genre’s approach.

As with any subculture, rebelling against the system is the watchword. It is this openly asserted rebellion that intrigues and provokes an initial encounter with the genre – often in adolescence. In my case, the first timid contact was through an Iron Maiden tape borrowed from my older sister in the late 1980s. With my interest piqued, I plunged headlong into the culture, drawn by the nonconformism and the sense of freedom that listening to metal gave me. Eventually, personal tastes are defined and refined. The most adventurous souls turn to the most extreme genres: thrash, death metal and black metal, or grindcore and noise, not to mention all the subgenres and complex branches of the metal underground.

The metal genre preaches independence and nonconformism. Driven by a DIY mindset, it offers an easy means of self-expression and involvement, even for non-musicians. Fanzines, labels, concerts, artwork and graphic design are just a few of the ways people participate in a scene that runs mostly on simple passionate commitment. Because the imagery is an integral part of the message, album covers play an important part in a

L’imagerie participant directement au message des groupes, les couvertures d’albums prennent naturellement une place importante dans l’identité visuelle des formations, soulignant les titres et les textes. Il est donc naturel que certains artistes, proches du mouvement, y aient associé leurs créations.

Les artistes présentés dans l’exposition Altars of Madness partagent tous ce passage par la culture metal et gardent, aujourd’hui encore, le regard aiguisé et critique éveillé par la rencontre avec cette musique et ses idéologies. Bien plus qu’une étape révoltée de leur adolescence, le metal a intégré leur vie, leur pensée et leur création artistique.

Aujourd’hui, à travers leurs œuvres – peintures, installations, photographies, vidéos, etc. – il est possible de déceler les mêmes messages d’anticonformisme et de critique acerbe de notre société que dans la musique qui les a inspirées à l’origine. Il n’est d’ailleurs pas inhabituel de voir les artistes à leur tour collaborer avec des musiciens.

Au final, le médium importe peu.

Ce message, les commissaires de l’exposition Altars of Madness, Damien Deroubaix et Jérôme Lefèvre, l’appliquent directement avec le projet C.S. (Conservative Shithead) Journal, un fanzine – médium classique de l’« underground » – où ils explorent les influences du metal dans l’art contemporain. L’exposition Altars of Madness transpose cette approche menée sur papier dans un espace d’exposition et permet une réelle rencontre avec des artistes et des œuvres très différentes, tous autour d’un même fondement : le metal extrême.

band’s visual identity, highlighting titles and lyrics. So it is natural that some artists close to the movement have lent their creativity to the cause.

All of the artists represented in the exhibition Altars of Madness have experienced metal culture and still retain a keenly critical outlook honed by contact with the music and its ideologies. Well beyond a rebellious adolescent phase, metal has become part of their life, their thinking and their art.

Today, their works – paintings, installations, photographs, videos, etc. – convey the same nonconformist messages and caustic criticism of our society as the music that originally inspired them. In fact, it is not unusual to see such artists collaborate with musicians. Ultimately, the medium matters little.

The curators of Altars of Madness, Damien Deroubaix and Jérôme Lefèvre, apply this message directly with C.S. (Conservative Shithead) Journal, a fanzine (classic underground medium) in which they explore the influences of metal in contemporary art. Altars of Madness transposes this paper-based approach to an exhibition space so as to enable a real encounter with very different artists and artworks, all revolving around the basis of extreme metal.

As a metal fan, I could hardly pass up the opportunity to work with Deroubaix and Lefèvre on this project, and I thank them for a fruitful experience born of a shared passion.

Thanks go as well to the exhibited artists and to the authors of the catalogue. Their respective contributions shed light on many little-known aspects of metal and encourage a new understanding of the genre, free from certain stereotypes.

En tant que fan de metal, je ne pouvais pas laisser passer l’occasion de travailler avec Damien Deroubaix et Jérôme Lefèvre sur ce projet, et je les remercie pour cette belle collaboration née d’une passion commune.

ALTARS OF MADNESS Jérôme Lefèvre Plusieurs compréhensions de la modernité sont possibles. Le recul que nous possédons, à l’heure où la culture postmoderne pourrait elle-même se voir remise en cause, nous y autorise. Dans les commentaires que fournit Mehdi Belhaj Kacem du concept d’inesthétique d’Alain Badiou, la radicalité moderne ne remonte pas à Dada, à Duchamp ou aux futuristes mais à Sade1. En effet, qui mieux que le Marquis de Sade incarne à la fois la transgression et la déconstruction propres à l’esprit moderne ? C’est le caractère insoutenable qui intéresse l’auteur. Insoutenable, Sade l’est au point de se voir en son temps emprisonné sous tous les régimes. Le 4 juillet 1789, le même Sade ameutait et encourageait depuis sa cellule de la Bastille la foule de révolutionnaires postés aux pieds de la prison. Georges Bataille, qui du vingtième siècle sera l’esprit le plus proche de Sade, écrivait déjà en 1976 : « C’est précisément pour s’être élevé au niveau de ce “terrible”, pour avoir reconnu dans l’œuvre de Sade la mesure insensée de la poésie, que le “mouvement” moderne sortit l’art de sa subordination où l’avaient presque toujours laissé les artistes au service des rois et des prêtres2. » Pour Mehdi Belhaj Kacem encore, c’est un autre « enfant terrible » qui incarne l’inesthétique en musique.

Paraphrasant Tchaïkovsky, il écrit : « Wagner met en effet fin à l’esthétique dans la musique : “Jadis, la musique était faite pour le plaisir des auditeurs ; avec Wagner, elle devient un supplice et une fatigue ! ”3 » Voilà donc ce qu’est l’esprit moderne : ce n’est pas seulement d’une déconstruction formelle dont il s’agit mais d’une volonté, celle de l’insubordination transgressive.

C’est dans cette volonté et dans l’insoutenable que réside l’inesthétique propre à la modernité.

Modernity can be understood in various ways. And today, with postmodern culture itself apt to be called into question, hindsight allows us to do so. In Mehdi Belhaj Kacem’s discussion of Alain Badiou’s concept of inaesthetics, modern radicalism is born not with Dada, Duchamp or the Futurists, but with Sade.1 Indeed, who better than the Marquis de Sade embodies both the transgression and the deconstruction particular to the modern mindset? What interests the author is the unbearable character. And unbearable Sade certainly was, to the point of being imprisoned under every regime of his time. On July 4, 1789, from his cell in the Bastille, Sade roused and stoked up the mob of revolutionaries stationed at the foot of the prison. In 1976, Georges Bataille, who in the twentieth century came closest in spirit to Sade, wrote, “It was precisely by rising to the level of this ‘dreadfulness,’ by recognizing in the work of Sade the extravagant standard of poetry, that the ‘modern movement’ was able to bring art out of the subordination in which it had almost always been left by artists in the service of the kings and the priests.”2 Belhaj Kacem points to another enfant terrible as the incarnation of the inaesthetic in music. Paraphrasing Tchaikovsky, he writes, “Wagner indeed put an end to the aesthetic in music: ‘At one time, music was made for the pleasure of the listeners; with Wagner, it has become an ordeal and a tiring effort!’”3 That, then, is the modern mindset: it involves not only the deconstruction of form but a volition for transgressive insubordination. It is in this volition and in the unbear­ able that the inaesthetic specific to modernity resides.

What place does rock have in the history of modernity?

We know what rock is: it is the many modern minds who, in the late 1940s, experimented with the raging electric blues that would become rock’n’roll. We can imag­ine how shocked the American public must have been a few years later to see the first televised appearances of Chuck Berry masturbating his guitar and doing the “duck walk.” We know what a “revolution” that triggered in the teenaged minds of those days and of subsequent

Aujourd’hui encore, les morceaux de rock, de hip-hop et de musique électronique restent construites sur les bases découvertes par quelques génies comme Bo Diddley. Cependant, le rock se confondra plus tard avec une culture anglo-saxonne libérale et triomphante. Il est vite le synonyme d’une industrie du divertissement. Il est d’une certaine manière profondément postmoderne. Le rock s’est défini comme un genre classifiable regroupant de manière assez générale l’ensemble des dérivés du rock’n’roll. Au même moment, l’art contemporain s’est affirmé comme une généralité comparable. Là où les mouvements modernes défendaient des lignes claires, tant sur le plan formel que théorique et idéologique, parfois à renfort de manifestes4, l’art contemporain opère depuis les années 1970 un consensus dans lequel toutes les tendances s’équivalent. Comme le remarquait JeanFrançois Lyotard dans L’inhumain : « Ce qui est sollicité par l’éclectisme, ce sont les habitudes du lecteur de magazines, les besoins du consommateur des images industrielles standard, c’est l’esprit du client des supermarkets. Ce postmodernisme-là, dans la mesure où il exerce, par les critiques, les conservateurs, les directeurs de galeries et les collectionneurs, une forte pression sur les artistes, consiste à aligner la recherche picturale sur l’état de fait de la “culture” et à déresponsabiliser les artistes par rapport à la question de l’imprésentable5. » Dans ces conditions, le heavy metal, bien qu’incarnant un « durcissement » du rock, n’échappera pas à son destin politique postmoderne, pas davantage que le hip-hop ou les musiques dites électroniques.

generations. Rock, hip-hop and electronic music are still today built on the foundations discovered by a few geniuses like Bo Diddley. However, rock later became conflated with a liberal and triumphant Anglo-Saxon culture and was soon synonymous with an entertainment industry. In a way, it was profoundly postmodern. Rock came to be defined as a classifiable genre broadly encompassing all derivations of rock’n’roll. At the same time, contemporary art emerged with a similarly sweeping definition. While the modern movements championed clear lines in terms of form, theory and ideology, at times backed by manifestos,4 contemporary art since the 1970s has brought about a consensus that all tendencies are of equal value. As Jean-François Lyotard notes in The Inhuman, “What is called on by eclecticism are the habits of magazine readers, the needs of the consumer of standard industrial images – this is the spirit of the supermarket shopper. To the extent that this postmodernism, via critics, museum and gallery directors and collectors puts strong pressure on the artists, it consists in aligning research in painting with a de facto state of ‘culture’ and deresponsibilizing the artists with respect to the question of the unpresentable.”5 In such conditions, heavy metal, though embodying a “hardening” of rock, cannot escape its postmodern political fate, no more than can hip-hop or so-called electronic music.

That being so, how can rock escape its dire destiny?

There is only one way out: rock’n’roll was born in the black clubs of segregationist America, a fairly underground context, and it may be there and only there, in the underground, where its roots lie, that rock can renew itself.

Spawned by a radical evolution of the punk and metal genres, extreme metal embodies this type of underground. Generically grouping grindcore, death metal and black metal, it represents an experimental thrust in the history of rock. The fact that its extremeness lies in the unbearable – the noise, the abject – makes this music a true modern language. Extreme metal is a modern project at once aesthetic and political. Its influence on visual artists who have listened to or practiced it is profound,

Réunissant de manière générique le grindcore, le death metal et le black metal, le genre représente un élan expérimental dans l’histoire du rock. Pour bien comprendre ce qu’est le grindcore, il est nécessaire de se référer un minimum à ses origines. À la fin des années 1970, l’éclosion du punk anglais voit en effet apparaître des groupes anarcho-punk sans compromis comme Crass, pour lesquels le mot anarchie ne s’emploie plus à la légère. Leur positionnement très à gauche ne s’assume pas dans le communisme mais dans une pensée antiautoritaire et autogestionnaire plus volontiers inspirée de Charles Fourier, de Pierre-Joseph Proudhon ou de Michel Bakounine. Ainsi, le groupe Crass – issu du collectif EXIT proche de Fluxus – avait fondé une communauté ouverte et avait pris la décision de réaliser et de diffuser lui-même ses propres produc-

In the late 1970s, the British punk boom saw the emergence of uncompromising anarcho-punk bands like Crass, about whom the word “anarchy” was not to be used lightly. L’étape suivante, incarnée par des groupes tels que Siege et Lärm, ne pouvait être que revendiquer le bruit comme langage. C’est la direction que prenait un courant de la musique industrielle. Dans la scène metal commençaient à circuler aussi des groupes tels que Hellhammer et Celtic Frost dont les sonorités n’étaient pas étrangères aux amateurs de crust punk.

C’est dans ce contexte qu’apparaissent Napalm Death, Repulsion et les groupes de grindcore du label Earache : Heresy, Extreme Noise Terror, Unseen Terror.

C’est Mick Harris, le batteur du groupe Napalm Death, qui invente le terme. Ce n’est plus du hardcore mais du grindcore, comme si la musique avait été passée au mixeur. La violence et la rudesse du son sont ici nécessaires au propos. Pour la même raison, les morceaux sont souvent exprimés en à peine plus d’une minute, parfois quelques secondes. Le morceau « You Suffer » de Napalm Death figure par exemple dans le Guinness des records de la chanson la plus courte de l’histoire avec 1,31 secondes. La démarche de Napalm Death, dans sa volonté moderne, n’est pas sans rappeler ce qu’écrivait Theodor W. Adorno à propos des pièces brèves d’Arnold Schönberg : « Leur brièveté dérive justement de l’exigence de l’extrême consistance. Celle-ci interdit le superfétatoire. (…) La musique, contractée en un seul instant, est vraie en tant que résultat d’une expérience négative, elle s’adresse à la souffrance réelle7. » Puisque le propos est important, les textes sont reproduits dans les livrets des disques.

On stage, the musicians were dressed all in black. The lighting was limited to a simple household bulb, and banners with an aesthetic typical of demonstrations served as backdrops.

Crass was also given to musical experimentation. In contrast, the crust-punk bands that followed, such as Discharge and Chaos U.K., developed a more basic language characterized by speed and the dirtiest sound possible. The next step, represented by groups like Siege and Lärm, could only be to claim noise as language. Industrial music was moving in that direction, while on the metal scene bands like Hellhammer and Celtic Frost, whose sounds were not unfamiliar to crust-punk fans, were beginning to emerge.

The stage was set for the arrival of Napalm Death, Repulsion and the Earache label’s grindcore bands: Heresy, Extreme Noise Terror, Unseen Terror. Then came groups like Anal Cunt, Nasum, Agathocles, Cripple Bastards, Brutal Truth and, more recently, Agoraphobic Nosebleed.

It was the Napalm Death drummer Mick Harris who coined the term: hardcore was out and grindcore was in, describing music that sounded as if it were being fed through a meat grinder. The violence and harshness of the sound are necessary to the message in this genre. For the same reason, the songs often run just over a minute, sometimes only a few seconds. Napalm Death’s “You Suffer”, for instance, is in The Guinness Books of Records as the shortest song in history, at 1.31 seconds. Napalm Death’s approach, in its modern volition, brings to mind the words of Theodor W. Adorno about Arnold Schönberg’s short pieces: “Their brevity derives precisely from the need for the highest level of consistency. This prohibits the superfluous. …

Music, contracted to a moment, is true as an eruption of negative experience. It touches on real suffering.”7 And because the message is important, the lyrics are printed in the album booklets, as explained by Napalm Death’s current frontman Mark “Barney” Greenway: “I am well aware that it’s impossible for listeners to

Comme l’explique Mark « Barney » Greenway, l’actuel chanteur de Napalm Death : « Je sais pertinemment qu’il est impossible pour un auditeur de discerner les mots que je prononce, sur scène ou sur disque, c’est pourquoi on fait toujours imprimer les textes sur les pochettes de nos disques8. » Le bruit est un langage à part entière ; le grindcore se veut une anti-musique. Pour leur tournée de 1992, Napalm Death reprend par exemple « Campaign for Musical Destruction » de Lärm. Même si ce type de chant et la rapidité que requiert l’exécution des morceaux exigent une certaine maîtrise technique, on revendique l’imperfection. Les Peel Sessions de Napalm Death enregistrés pour la BBC comptent parmi leurs meilleurs enregistrements justement pour leur imperfection, voire le ratage volontaire qui les caractérise9.

Sur le plan visuel, le grindcore s’inscrit également dans un héritage du punk. Il s’approprie notamment l’esthétique du collage politique telle que celle développée par Gee Vaucher de Crass. La pratique du collage telle qu’on la connaît aujourd’hui apparaît avec Dada. Pour Jacques Rancière dans Malaise dans l’esthétique, « si le collage a été l’une des grandes procédures de l’art moderne, c’est parce que ses formes techniques obéissent à une logique esthético-politique plus fondamentale10 ». For their 1992 tour, for example, Napalm Death revived Lärm’s “Campaign for Musical Destruction.” Even though this type of singing and the speed needed to perform the pieces demand a certain technical mastery, the group claims the right to imperfection. The Peel Sessions that Napalm Death recorded for the BBC are among their best recordings precisely because of the imperfection, the deliberate missteps that characterize them.9 Visually, grindcore also reflects the legacy of punk.

Among other things, it appropriates the political collage aesthetic developed by Gee Vaucher, of Crass.

The practice of collage as we know it today originated with Dada. According to Jacques Rancière, in Aesthetics and its Discontents, “If collage has been one of modern art’s great techniques, the reason is that its technical forms obey a more fundamental aesthetico-political logic.”10 He refers in this regard to John Heartfield. In Arbeitsjournal (work journal) and Kriegsfibel (war primer) written during his years in exile, Bertolt Brecht compiled images of the war and added commentary in captions. As in Heartfield’s work, the connections that Brecht draws among the various associated sources convey a caustic irony. In 1973, Roland Barthes compared Brecht’s collages to “music with lyrics.”11 The same comparison was later made, often with no knowledge of Dada or Brecht, by anonymous posters on punk fanzines and many anarcho-punk bands. Grindcore covers such as those of legendary Napalm Death albums (Scum, From Enslavement to Obliteration, etc.) and Terrorizer’s World Downfall allude to the collage aesthetic.

Since we are extreme, let’s be really extreme. If we’re going to describe an apocalyptic world, let’s take it to the limit, and beyond. And so grindcore bands like Repulsion, then Carcass and Anal Cunt introduced grindcore art with unbearable gore. Typical examples are the gore collages of medical book pictures made for Carcass’s Reek of Putrefaction and Symphonies of

There are many links between grindcore and art.

Nicholas Bullen, who founded Napalm Death in 1982, went on to become an artist. Since 2005 he has produced numerous videos and sound pieces in institutions such as Tate Britain, the Serpentine Gallery and Kunsthalle Frankfurt. For the installation British Summertime/Life is Easy, shown in the exhibition Altars of Madness, Bullen transformed a garden shed – a typical feature in AngloSaxon suburbs – into a tool for riots by filling it with more than eight hundred homemade bombs. Through the popular garden shed and the Molotov cocktail, an aesthetic of revolt unfolds in the art centre.

The Mexican artist Juan Pablo Macías devotes part of his work to the restoration of the Biblioteca Social Reconstruir (BSR), a libertarian and anarchist library founded in 1978 in Mexico City. For example, he invited Mexican bands that had supported the restoration project to record their music for the sound installation BSR Complete Stock #1. The dauntingly stark installation presents the result in the form of a thousand vinyl records, each in a black sandpaper jacket representing the symbolic colour of the anarchist movement. L’artiste anglais Mark Titchner a fait du texte le principal matériau de sa démarche. Influencés tantôt par la publicité, par les banderoles des manifestations ou par les textes de chansons, les messages qu’il composent apparaissent comme des slogans réappropriés et détournés.

Le sobre message The World Isn’t Working montré est par exemple inspiré du slogan « Labour isn’t working » que Margaret Thatcher et le parti conservateur britannique avaient imaginé en 1978 contre le Labour Party, la gauche anglaise12. Le plus souvent, les messages adressés par l’artiste sont anxiogènes. Son œuvre peut être interprétée comme la métaphore de la faille du système politique et économique qui est le nôtre. De la même manière, il produit des sculptures kafkaïennes, toutes comparables à des machines de torture mentale. Dès 2006, Mark Titchner collaborera avec le fondateur de Napalm Death, Nicholas Bullen.

L’œuvre de Damien Deroubaix décrit également un enfer kafkaïen mais cette fois par le biais d’emprunts formels à l’univers grindcore. Les symboles qui composent sa peinture et sa sculpture selon une esthétique du collage proviennent autant de pochettes de disques et de logos que de l’histoire de l’art. C’est dans le registre morbide et les vanités que nous pénétrons ici. Ces visions chimériques apparaissent comme autant de figures métaphoriques du réel dans toute son abjection. Damien Deroubaix fait également un emploi très particulier du texte. Les formules choc qu’il emprunte au metal deviennent les titres de ses compositions. C’est le cas de la peinture World Downfall montrée dans l’exposition dans laquelle plusieurs éléments empruntés à la pochette éponyme du groupe Terrorizer se trouvent assemblés comme dans les collages typiques du genre musical.

The English artist Mark Titchner has made text the primary material of his practice. Variously influenced by advertising, protest banners and song lyrics, the messages that he composes resemble slogans appropriated and altered in meaning. For example, the sober message of The World Isn’t Working, shown in the exhibition, was inspired by the slogan “Labour isn’t working,” used in 1978 by Margaret Thatcher and the British Conservative Party against the left-leaning Labour Party.12 Most of the messages the artist delivers are troubling. His art can be interpreted as a metaphor for the flaws in our political and economic system. In the same way, he produces Kafkaesque sculptures, all comparable to mental torture machines. In 2006, Titchner began collaborating with the founder of Napalm Death, Nicholas Bullen.

Damien Deroubaix’s work likewise describes a Kafkasque hell, but it does so by borrowing forms from the grindcore world. The symbols that make up his paintings and sculptures according to a collage aesthetic are drawn as much from album covers and logos as from the history of art. We are in the realm of the morbid and the vanities here. The chimerical visions appear as metaphoric figures of reality in all its abjectness. Deroubaix also makes very particular use of text. The shock phrases that he borrows from metal become titles for his compositions. This is true of the painting World Downfall, shown in the exhibition, in which several elements borrowed from the cover of Terrorizer’s album of the same name are assembled as in the collages typical of the metal genre.

When Morbid Angel’s first album, Altars of Madness,13 came out in 1989, heavy metal had already exceeded its own codes. From the start, hard rock, before punk, had flown in the face of hippie culture. As the artist Mike Kelley remarked, “This was already apparent at the beginning of the sixties in records by groups like Black Sabbath: negativity was becoming popular.”14 Heavy metal took the original provocativeness of rock’n’roll to ever greater heights.

Since the early 1980s, metal’s hard edge had been represented by thrash metal, in bands like Metallica, Venom, Megadeth, Anthrax, Suicidal Tendencies, Kreator, Slayer and Celtic Frost. In reaction to the glam wave, thrash metal wanted to embody a certain seriousness, which was reflected in the music by a more elemental power and in the lyrics by themes deeper than those of their permed and bleached counterparts. Themes related to nuclear warfare and chemical weapons, for example, became central in the thrash world, as attested by band names like Nuclear Assault and Anthrax, and by the album covers of bands like Evil Dead, or Sodom’s Agent Orange.

This was the state of things when the history of death metal began, in 1983, when three teenagers got together: Rick Rozz had just convinced Kam Lee to form a Venom-style band, and they were soon joined by Chuck Schuldiner.

Their band, named Mantas, went on to become the genre-pioneering cult group Death, whose first album, Scream Bloody Gore, came out in 1987.15 Schuldiner’s home state of Florida became the centre of the death metal scene, with bands like Massacre, Morbid Angel,

Pour le novice, le death metal diffère peu du grindore : la musique est rapide, la voix est gutturale et on retrouve le « blast beat » caractéristique du metal extrême. Mais alors que le grindcore repose sur un son des plus sales et une énergie primaire, le death hérite du heavy metal le goût pour les solos de guitare sophistiqués, et la complexité technique se fait parfois aussi précise qu’un bistouri sur la table d’opération. Le death s’inscrit dans une continuité de la « tradition » heavy metal.

Comme son nom l’indique, le genre musical est entièrement dédié au trépas et à la douleur.

Qu’est-ce que la mort sinon la fin ultime et irréversible ?

La mort est à considérer sérieusement, c’est la seule certitude pour qui s’interroge sur l’avenir : la mort tient parole. Dans son traité La mort, Vladimir Jankélévitch écrivait : « De même qu’une certaine fréquence de vibrations sert de prétexte physique à la sensation auditive du fa dièse, de même un certain nombre entre autres nombres, un certain degré sur l’échelle sont l’incident physique à l’occasion duquel se produit la grande mutation métaphysique appelée mort16. » Le death metal, par sa rapidité et sa radicalité, vise un extrême comparable.

Cette intensité, on la trouve dans le langage musical luimême ; les batteurs repoussent par exemple les limites de rapidité et d’endurance dont leur corps est capable.

On dit ainsi que Pete Sandoval, le batteur de Morbid Angel, s’écroule de fatigue à la fin de chaque concert.

For the novice, death metal is little different from grindcore: the music is fast, the voices are rasping, and both use the blast beat typical of extreme metal. But while grindcore is based on a very dirty sound and primal energy, death displays heavy metal’s penchant for complex guitar solos, and the technical complexity can be as precise as a scalpel on an operating table. Death is in keeping with the heavy metal “tradition.”

As the name implies, this musical genre is totally devoted to death and pain.

What is death if not the ultimate and irreversible end?

Death is to be taken seriously; it is the only certainty for anyone wondering about the future: death keeps its word.

In his treatise on death, La mort, Vladimir Jankélévitch makes this observation: “Just as a certain vibrational frequency is a physical pretext for the auditory sensation of an F sharp, in the same way a certain number among other numbers, a certain degree on the scale are the physical incident at which point occurs the great metaphysical mutation called death.”16 Death metal music, through its velocity and radicalism, aims for a similar extreme. This intensity marks the musical language itself; for example, the drummers push their bodies to the limits of speed and endurance. It is said that Pete Sandoval, the Morbid Angel drummer, used to collapse from exhaustion at the end of each concert. And that Trey Azagthoth, the guitarist, would cut himself before going on stage. Obviously, the visual and literary aspects of this new music had to be at

Au final, la littérature du genre, comme la représentation de l’enfer chez Bosch ou Brueghel, est la métaphore de nos peurs et des errances de l’âme. C’est un enfer mental kafkaiën qui est décrit.

L’imagerie death metal déployée par l’illustrateur Dan Seagrave – qui signe la pochette de Altars of Madness de Morbid Angel et de nombreuses autres – est habitée par des créatures qui sont autant de métaphores de cet enfer mental. Les paysages mornes qui ornent les pochettes de disque du genre montrent des paysages sans vie et des terres de lave dignes du Pandemonium de John Martin17.

C’est aussi ce que décrivait la peinture de Larry Carroll telle qu’on la connaît associée à Slayer. C’est lui qui réalisera les pochettes de South of Heaven, Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss et Christ Illusion. L’œuvre peinte et graphique de Larry Carroll décrit depuis les années 1980 un univers critique qui pourrait être entendu comme une incarnation contemporaine de L’enfer de Jérôme Bosch18.

least equivalent, and it was only natural that its subject matter be drawn from the twisted realm of morbidity and extreme experience. The lyrics of the Cannibal Corpse band feature violent descriptions of serial killers’ abominable crimes and scabrous sexual abuse. With a no less conceptual obsession, Bolt Thrower has cultivated a machine gun and battlefield aesthetic from the outset. In this context, Obituary’s vocalist has stood out for eschewing actual lyrics in favour of phonetic vocals. Ultimately, the literature of the genre, like the representation of Hell by Bosch or Brueghel, is a metaphor for our fears and the wanderings of the soul. What it describes is a Kafkaesque mental hell. The death metal imagery deployed by the illustrator Dan Seagrave – creator of the artwork for Morbid Angel’s Altars of Madness and many others – is inhabited by creatures that are metaphors for that mental hell.

The covers depict dismal, lifeless landscapes and fiery floods of lava worthy of John Martin’s Pandemonium.17 Similar gloom pervades Larry Carroll’s painting as we know it in his work for Slayer. It was he who created the covers for South of Heaven, Reign in Blood, Seasons in the Abyss and Christ Illusion. Since the 1980s, Carroll’s painted and drawn work has described a critical world that could be understood as a contemporary incarnation of Hieronymus Bosch’s Hell.18

ture, du dessin et du film. Comment ne pas tracer un parallèle avec les limites corporelles auxquelles le batteur ou le chanteur de metal extrême peut par exemple être soumis ? Son intérêt pour le genre ne se limite pas au morbide, il réside dans ce que peut signifier la notion d’extrême.

L’œuvre de Steven Shearer, chez qui les références au metal abondent, n’a rien de morbide non plus, ou très peu. C’est cette fois une lecture sociologique qui semble l’intéresser. Par sa facture, la peinture de Shearer rappelle davantage celle de peintres comme Edvard Munch. Les adolescents montrés par l’artiste sont exactement les kids typiques des concerts de metal depuis le début des années 1980. Steven Shearer travaille en effet principalement sur la base d’images trouvées – issues d’Internet ou de magazines – qu’il se réapproprie. Quand il peint Pete Sandoval ou reproduit au stylo bic les membres d’Obituary, c’est encore sur la base d’images trouvées. Il a également produit plusieurs séries de Poems composés de formules choc et brutales à la manière de titres de morceaux de death metal. À l’occasion, ladite littérature nihiliste se retrouve placardée blanc sur noir entre la rue et le ciel dans les capitales de par le monde au gré de ses expositions.

Les références d’un artiste comme Grégory Cuquel au metal sont d’ordre plus purement musical. Non sans fétichisme, il intègre à ses compositions des éléments comme des t-shirts portés lors de concerts ou des instruments empruntés à des musiciens de la scène metal.

Chaque fois que la sculpture Circle Pit (Doom it Yourself) est montrée comme dans Altars of Madness, elle met en scène une double pédale du batteur du groupe Gojira.

The American artist Matthew Barney was probably the first to incorporate identifiable signs from the death metal world into his work. For his film Cremaster 2, in which he plays the legendary criminal Gary Gilmore, he invited the musicians Steve Tucker (of Morbid Angel) and Dave Lombardo (of Slayer) to perform in the legendary scene where they interact with two hundred thousand bees. In collaboration with the composer Jonathan Bepler, Barney has involved several metal and punk bands in the Cremaster series.

His entire oeuvre seems to be devoted to the body, to what performance can produce in terms of form in sculpture, drawing and film. It is impossible not to see a parallel with the physical limits to which an extreme metal drummer or vocalist, for example, can be pushed. Barney’s interest in the genre is not limited to the morbid; it lies above all with what the notion of extreme can mean.

Similarly, there is nothing, or at least not much, morbid about Steven Shearer’s art, which abounds with references to metal. In his case, the point of interest seems to be a sociological reading. In style, Shearer’s painting is closer to that of artists like Edvard Munch. The teenagers he depicts exemplify those that have flocked to metal concerts since the early 1980s. Shearer works mainly from pictures appropriated from the Internet or magazines. When he paints Pete Sandoval or draws the members of Obituary in ballpoint pen, his source is found images. He has also produced several series of Poems inspired by the brutal, scatological language of death metal song titles. From time to time, his nihilistic writings appear white on black, suspended like billboards between street and sky in world capitals hosting his exhibitions.

The metal references of an artist like Grégory Cuquel are more purely musical. Attesting a certain fetishism, his compositions incorporate elements such as concert T-shirts and instruments borrowed from metal scene musicians. Each time the sculpture Circle Pit (Doom it Yourself) is shown, as in Altars of Madness, it features a double pedal belonging to the drummer of the band Gojira.

Le death metal possède une autre caractéristique. Il pourrait être interprété comme l’équivalent musical de ce qu’était le memento mori dans la peinture ancienne et classique. tique à travers ses innombrables interprétations métaphoriques. À mi-chemin entre la scène de genre et la nature morte, l’œuvre de Gregory Jacobsen est directement inspirée par la littérature death metal. Hantée par diverses figures monstrueuses à mi-chemin entre l’enfant et le cadavre, chacun des sujets peints apparaît dans un état de putréfaction. Plus qu’un memento mori, sa peinture pourrait être interprétée comme un memento putris. Gregory Jacobsen emprunte certains des titres qu’il donne à ses peintures au groupe Carcass, connu pour ses métaphores gore. Un autre artiste influencé par la scène, Gerald Collings, originaire de Tampa en Floride, a également fait de la peinture de barbaque sa spécialité.

D’une manière différente, la peinture de Maël Nozahic semble attachée à certaines figures mythologiques. On note par exemple la récurrence d’éléments comme celle de l’arbre. Elle emploie un type de représentation traditionnel au service de thèmes tels que de la mort, la vivisection ou le caractère autosacrificiel de l’homme.

Death metal has another characteristic, which could be interpreted as the musical equivalent of the memento mori in ancient and classical painting. The message expressed by such images – Remember that thou shalt die – reminded the viewer that death awaited. The aim was to associate death with the representation of humankind.

But today, instead of being personified or represented, death speaks directly; it is the narrator, in the manner of Bataille in Madame Edwarda. Death metal dissects the theme through its countless metaphorical interpretations. Midway between the genre scene and the still life, the art of Gregory Jacobsen shows the direct influence of death metal literature. It is haunted by monstrous half-child, half-corpse figures, all of them in a state of putrefaction. Rather than memento mori, his paintings could be construed as memento putris. Jacobsen borrows some of his titles from the band Carcass, known for its gore metaphors. Another artist influenced by the scene, the Tampa, Florida, native Gerald Collings, likewise has made a specialty of painting raw flesh.

In a different way, Maël Nozahic’s painting appears to be bound up with mythological figures. The tree, for instance, is one of the elements that recur in her work.

She uses a traditional type of representation to explore themes such as death, vivisection and humankind’s self-sacrificial nature.

DARK MATTER LANDSCAPE Another movement spread across Scandinavia like a thick fog crawling along the ground. As mentioned earlier, alternative bands like Venom, Bathory, Hellhammer, Celtic Frost and Sarcofago emerged on the thrash scene.

It was in their music, described as proto-black metal, that the Scandinavian scene originated, with the groups variously drawing inspiration from Norse mythology, Viking tales and Satanism.

When Venom brought out the Black Metal album in 1982, they certainly didn’t suspect that it would lead to such a scene. And yet that is precisely the path followed by a generation of fiercely determined Norwegians represented by Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal and Emperor.

Quand les membres de Venom ont sorti leur album Black Metal en 1982, ils ne se doutaient certainement pas qu’ils engendreraient une telle scène. C’est pourtant exactement la voie que suivra une génération de Norvégiens acharnée, incarnée par Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone, Immortal ou encore Emperor.

Black metal bills itself as the music of the devil. The musicians are made up as corpses – in so-called corpse paint – and their language aims to be as lugubrious as possible. The scene grew up as an underground movement around a Black Circle that often met at an Oslo record shop called Helvete, meaning hell in Norwegian and Swedish. The shop was run by Øystein Aarseth, better known as the Mayhem guitarist Euronymous.

But what sets black metal apart from the rest of extreme metal is that it embodies a reaction to the death metal wave. In 1992, Gylve Fenris Nagell, of Darkthrone, explained this to a journalist: “Right before we started to record the Soulside Journey album I was totally bored with the whole Death Metal thing. It had no ideals, it was only musicianship to me. I wanted more of a lifestyle, an ideology behind the music. The thing about Death Metal is that most of the fans are about fourteen years of age... to them it’s just fun, and I hate fun. We don’t want to have fans who are this young, we want people that have been constantly listening to extreme music for six or seven years, people that understand what it’s all about.” Later in the interview he says, “Black Metal is tradition, it’s never going to change. Like Blues for example... if you tried to change it, it wouldn’t be Black Metal any more.

The same goes for the sound: back in 1984 the sound of the Black Metal albums was really ugly. If you look at a Black Metal band, they look ugly, and they have ugly minds. You know, we play real ugly music, so we have to have an ugly sound.”19 Black metal also has a darker and more radical side. The media has dubbed it “black metal crimes,” and it is a fact: the “ugly mind” to which Fenriz alludes is behind many crimes motivated by Satanism or homophobia.

Black metal musicians have a genuine fascination for the macabre. A prime example is Dead, the Mayhem vocalist, who ritualistically buried his stage clothes in a cemetery and dug them up only after they had begun to rot and smell like a corpse. He eventually killed himself with a shotgun. Others musicians have resorted to violence: Varg Vikernes, by burning down churches and murdering his producer – fellow Mayhem member Euronymous – and Bård Eithun, by stabbing a gay man to death in a park. And Vikernes still promotes the

Nous ne nous adressons pas à un public aussi jeune, mais plutôt à des gens qui écoutent de la musique extrême depuis six ou sept ans et qui savent de quoi il retourne. » Plus loin dans l’entretien, il explique : « Le black metal est une tradition, ça ne changera jamais. Comme le blues, par exemple. Si on essayait de le changer, ce ne serait plus du black metal. C’est la même chose pour le son : il n’a effectivement pas évolué depuis 1984.

Un black metal band se doit d’être moche, d’avoir un son moche et un esprit moche. Nous jouons vraiment de la musique moche, il faut forcément qu’on ait un son moche aussi19. »

Le black metal connaît une autre caractéristique, plus sombre et plus radicale. La presse l’a identifiée comme les « crimes du black metal ». C’est un fait avéré : cet « esprit moche » auquel Fenriz fait allusion est à l’origine de plusieurs crimes motivés par le satanisme ou par l’homophobie. La fascination pour le macabre est réelle chez les musiciens de black metal. Elle est incarnée à merveille par Dead, le chanteur du groupe Mayhem, qui allait jusqu’à enterrer ses vêtements dans un cimetière avant de les déterrer suffisamment longtemps après, quand ils avaient commencé à pourrir et à « sentir le cadavre», un rituel qui lui était nécessaire avant d’apparaître sur scène. Il finira par se suicider au fusil.

D’autres musiciens finiront par passer à l’acte : Varg Vikernes en incendiant des églises et en tuant son producteur – Euronymous, également guitariste de Mayhem – ou encore Bård Eithun qui assassinera un homosexuel à coup de couteau dans un parc. Vikernes fera régulièrement l’apologie des idées d’extrême droite les plus radicales. Mais où s’arrête la réalité et où commence le mythe ?

Les membres de Mayhem ont photographié le cadavre de Dead et ont fait du cliché l’illustration de leur disque suivant. Mais pour autant, Euronymous a-t-il réellement cuisiné la cervelle de son ami pour pouvoir revendiquer être le premier cannibale de l’histoire du rock20 ? Varg Vikernes a-t-il brûlé autant d’églises qu’il ne le prétend ?

Les fans comme la presse spécialisée jouent la surenchère.

But did Euronymous really cook his friend’s brain so he could claim to be the first cannibal in the history of rock?20 Has Varg Vikernes burned down as many churches as he claims? The fans and the trade press keep upping the ante.

symbole du black metal. L’esthétique des pochettes de disques est plus intéressante encore ; souvent en noir et blanc, elle suggère volontiers les paysages norvégiens. Les titres des morceaux eux-mêmes évoquent le paysage, ils incarnent la musique tout comme ils sont le théâtre de scènes épiques comparables à celles décrites par Richard Wagner. Burzum, mené par Varg Vikernes, a aussi illustré plusieurs de ses disques par les gravures du symboliste norvégien Theodor Kittelsen, une des grandes inspirations du genre. Cette iconographie empruntée à Kittelsen confère d’emblée un caractère postromantique au black metal. Les paysages du genre ont quelque chose du rocher des Walkyries, lui-même inspiré des versions de L’île des morts de Arnold Böcklin et des légendes du Mont-Chauve.

Le black metal correspond en quelque sorte à une volonté wagnérienne. En leur temps, Richard Wagner et Friedrich Nietzsche étaient habités par le désir de rivaliser avec la religion, sinon d’ériger une contre-religion. En réalité, l’art total de Wagner restera essentiellement musical même s’il reste un des compositeurs les plus populaires et que certains, comme Louis II de Bavière, se seront perdus dans son monde.. Il me semble aussi que Nietzsche ne soit – déplorons-le – réellement compris que des philosophes.

La révolution wagnérienne ne s’est néanmoins pas jouée sur le seul plan musical – son vocabulaire, sa redéfinition de l’opéra, son orchestration – mais aussi sur le plan des idées. C’est un monde foncièrement païen au symbolisme aussi politique que romantique dont il s’agit. C’est la manière dont Varg Vikernes comprendra l’œuvre du peintre et illustrateur norvégien Theodor Kittelsen. Assez discret dans le symbolisme international, Kittelsen est néanmoins très connu et admiré en Norvège pour ses dessins de trolls et ses interprétations des paysages norvégiens. Là, il est pour ainsi dire populaire. Ainsi, le choix de Kittelsen par Varg Vikernes est particulièrement intéressant : il y a dans l’œuvre du peintre un caractère sombre et mélancolique dans lequel le musicien se reconnaîtra. Il y a en outre la vision d’une Norvège païenne, dénuée de christianisme et peuplée selon les légendes ancestrales. À travers ses paysages incarnés, Theodor Kittelsen aide à comprendre l’originalité du black metal norvégien et la force de son esthétique.

scapes. The titles of the songs evoke the landscape; they embody the music and speak of epic scenes comparable to those described by Richard Wagner. Burzum, led by Varg Vikernes, has illustrated many of its album covers with art by the Norwegian Symbolist painter and illustrator Theodor Kittelsen, one of the genre’s leading inspirations. The iconography borrowed from Kittelsen imparts a post-Romantic spirit to black metal. The landscapes have something of the Rock of the Valkyries, itself inspired by versions of Arnold Böcklin’s Isle of the Dead and Bald Mountain legends.

To some extent, black metal corresponds to a Wagnerian desire. In their day, Richard Wagner and Friedrich Nietzsche were driven by a desire to compete with religion, if not to establish a counter-religion. In reality, Wagner’s “total art” remained essentially musical, despite his being one of the most popular composers and the fact that Ludwig II of Bavaria and others could lose themselves in his world. It also seems to me that, regrettably, Nietzsche was understood only by philosophers. Nevertheless, the Wagnerian revolution did not play out solely on the musical level – his vocabulary, his redefinition of opera, his orchestration – but also in terms of ideas. His is a fundamentally pagan world, marked by symbolism as much political as romantic. And that is how Varg Vikernes understands Theodor Kittelsen’s work. Although a minor figure of international Symbolism, Kittelsen is well known and loved in Norway for his drawings of trolls and his interpretations of local landscapes. He is popular there, so to speak. This makes Vikernes’s choice of Kittelsen particularly interesting: there is a dark, melancholy side to the painter’s work in which the musician recognizes himself. It expresses the vision of a pagan Norway, devoid of Christianity and populated according to ancestral legends. Through his embodied landscapes, Kittelsen helps to understand the originality of Norwegian black metal and the power of its aesthetic.

A century later, Torbjørn Rødland captured the same intensity in the photographic series In a Norwegian Landscape, where he appears wandering and carrying a plastic bag in the same landscapes as those depicted by Kittelsen. His approach is akin to that of black metal musicians. In the later series Black, he immortalized Fenriz,

C’est ensuite Harmony Korine qu’on a vu multiplier les références au genre. Il choisit pour la musique de son film Gummo en 1997 des groupes tels que Bathory, Burzum et Nifelheim aussi bien que Sleep ou Brujeria. Il publie l’année d’après sous le titre A Crackup at the Race Riots ses notes nihilistes hallucinées21. La série de photographies Pagan Pages montrée dans l’exposition s’inscrit dans cette même dynamique. La singularité du travail d’Harmony Korine réside également dans l’ironie qu’il déploie. Il n’hésite pas à tourner en dérision certains travers du genre en s'appuyant sur une raillerie grinçante.

D’autres artistes procéderont à une intégration différente de la culture black metal. Banks Violette puise plus directement dans l’iconographie du genre et dans ses légendes.

L’installation Untitled (Church) est par exemple une référence directe à la pochette du EP Aske de Burzum. L’œuvre consiste en une charpente de sel évoquant le bois calciné des églises. La partie sonore de la pièce est le fruit d’une collaboration avec Snorre Ruch, guitariste du groupe Thorns et complice de Varg Vikernes dans l’assassinat d’Euronymous. L’artiste réalise ainsi plusieurs installations majeures dans la seconde partie des années 2000. Voidhanger (Twin Channel)/All Tomorrows Graves montrée dans l’exposition Altars of Madness compte parmi celles-ci. Ici, la scène sur laquelle se produisent les musiciens tend à devenir un paysage à l’image des forêts norvégiennes figurées par la musique elle-même. C’est cette fois avec Ted Skjellum (Nocturno Culto) de Darkthrone qu’il collabore. L’artiste s’inspire non seulement du black metal mais plus largement du metal et du punk en tant que cultures à la fois visuelle et sociale. Ainsi, les premières pièces qui l’ont fait connaître font référence

Frost, Abbath and Infernus in cult portraits staged in the Norwegian forest. In fact, it was in Rødland’s work that much of the contemporary art world first saw identifiable references to the Scandinavian black metal culture.

Harmony Korine was the next to multiply references to the genre. In 1997, he included music by bands such as Bathory, Burzum, Nifelheim, Sleep and Brujeria in the soundtrack for his film Gummo. The following year he published a collection of hallucinatory, nihilistic ramblings under the title A Crackup at the Race Riots.21 The photographic series Pagan Pages, shown in the exhibition, reflects the same dynamic. The originality of Korine’s work also lies in the irony he wields, never hesitating to deride the genre’s shortcomings with grating mockery.

Other artists incorporate black metal culture in different ways. Banks Violette draws directly on the iconography and mythology of the genre. The installation Untitled (Church), for example, is a direct reference to the cover of Burzum’s EP Aske. It consists of a framework of bonded salt evoking the charred remains of burnt-out wooden churches. The soundtrack of the piece was created in collaboration with Snorre Ruch, the Thorns guitarist and Varg Vikernes’s accomplice in the murder of Euronymous. Between 2005 and 2010, Violette produced several major installations in this way, among them Voidhanger (Twin Channel)/All Tomorrows Graves, shown in the exhibition Altars of Madness. Here, the stage where the musicians perform evolves into a landscape recalling the Norwegian forests expressed by the music itself. The music collaborator in this case is Ted Skjellum (Nocturno Culto), of Darkthrone. Violette takes inspiration not only from black metal but, more broadly, from metal and punk as visual and social cultures. The early pieces that brought him notice refer to the murder of teenaged Elyse Marie Pahler by three members of a metal band under the influence of Slayer.22 In the same way, he frequently alludes to groups like Poison Idea and The Misfits. One of his most famous drawings – in which he appropriates the album art of Sepultura’s Beneath the Remains – is shown in Altars of Madness.

If Banks Violette’s arrival on the metal scene caused such a stir, it was in part because it coincided with the

Son travail de photographe obstinément consacré à sa conception « néantesque » du paysage est régulièrement associé à Sunn O))), Earth ou Jesu. Sa photographie pénètre à présent le monde de l’art contemporain. Son œuvre consiste presque exclusivement en des vues de sous-bois plus ou moins denses et a priori vierges.

Rien ne trahit le passage de quiconque ici, pourtant les paysages photographiés par Seldon Hunt sont à chaque fois de misérables coins de verdure de banlieues sordides, refuges de toxicomanes.

La démarche de l’artiste Élodie Lesourd est des plus singulières. Sa peinture est caractérisée par un travail d’appropriation qu’elle appelle « Hyperrockalisme » : un hyperréalisme immortalisant non pas des paysages urbains figés mais des installations d’autres artistes explicitement marquées par la culture rock. Elle se réapproprie ainsi des œuvres de Claude Lévêque ou de Joris van de Moortel restituées en peinture. Dans Vargsmål, elle cite par exemple l’installation Untitled (Church) de Banks Violette. Dans Χάος Γένετο, elle profite d’une référence au groupe de black metal grec Rotting Christ pour évoquer la situation politique de leur pays en 2011.

D’autres pièces d’Élodie Lesourd sont plus directement liées à l’iconographie du genre. C’est le cas des pièces A Graveyard in the Snow et Death, War, Famine, Pestilence dans laquelle elle explore les logos de Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone et Emperor pour leurs qualités graphiques.

The American artist has worked on several occasions with one of the initiators of this revival, Stephen O’Malley, of Sunn O))); one example of their collaboration is Sunn O)))’s EP Oracle. Seldon Hunt was also involved in the scene’s revival. He is known for his image-laden, cosmic writings in the booklet of Sunn O)))’s The GrimmRobe Demos. As a photographer obsessed with a “nothingness” concept of landscape, he frequently works with Sunn O))), Earth and Jesu. His photography has now penetrated the world of contemporary art and consists almost exclusively of views of thick and theoretically virgin undergrowth. There is no trace of human life, and yet all of the landscapes he photographs are wretched patches of greenery in sordid suburbs, hangouts for drug addicts. Élodie Lesourd’s practice is highly unusual. Her painting is notable for an appropriation approach that she calls “Hyperrockalisme”: a hyperrealism that immortalizes not frozen urban landscapes but installations by other artists explicitly marked by rock culture. Her recreations in paint include appropriated works by Claude Lévêque and Joris van de Moortel. In Vargsmål, for example, she quotes Banks Violette’s installation Untitled (Church).

In Χάος Γένετο, she refers to the Greek black metal band Rotting Christ to evoke their country’s political situation in 2011.

Other works by Lesourd relate more directly to the genre’s iconography. This is true of A Graveyard in the Snow and Death, War, Famine, Pestilence, in which she explores the graphic qualities of the Mayhem, Burzum, Darkthrone and Emperor logos.

Les liens entre l’art et le metal extrême n’ont rien de surprenant. L’expérimentation était en effet au cœur du metal extrême dès les prémices du genre. Le rock, nous l’avons souligné plus haut, est devenu une étiquette absconse dont peut se réclamer chaque nouvel idiot qui saisit une guitare. L’âme et le langage de la musique qui nous intéresse ici est ailleurs.

Quand Nicholas Bullen fonde ce qui deviendra Napalm Death, ce ne sont encore que de la guitare acoustique et des bruits de barils. C’est finalement autour de Throbbing Gristle que Nicholas Bullen et Justin Broadrick se rencontrent23. Avant qu’il ne rejoigne Napalm Death, Justin Broadrick avait aussi fondé Final en 1982, un groupe qui scelle la rencontre entre l’ambient music, les premières compositions dites minimales, et la guitare saturée. Le grindcore n’est pas dissociable d’une part de musique industrielle et bruitiste.

Cette volonté bruitiste coïncide alors avec les préoccupations du jazz d’avant-garde tel qu’il se pratique autour de John Zorn à la fin des années 1980 au point que ce dernier s’intéressera de près à Napalm Death, Repulsion ou Extreme Noise Terror. La formation Naked City sera un temps lié au label Earache. John Zorn, le bassiste Bill Laswell et Mick Harris fondent le projet transversal Painkiller alliant jazz, grindcore, dub et ambient. Quand Mick Harris quitte Napalm Death en 1991, c’est à des projets expérimentaux qu’il se consacre.

Outre Painkiller, il fonde Scorn avec Nicholas Bullen.

Il s’agit au départ d’un projet reposant sur deux batteries et une boîte à rythme24. Le line-up de Vae Solis, le premier album de Scorn, s’avère au final exactement identique à celui de la face A de Scum, le premier album de Napalm Death. Industriel au départ, Scorn deviendra essentiellement électronique puis précurseur du dubstep. Dans un album comme Sound of the Animal Kingdom, le groupe américain Brutal Truth composera plusieurs morceaux inspirés par John Cage et Steve Reich et enregistreront une interprétation du It’s After the End of the World de Sun Ra.

There is nothing surprising about the links between art and extreme metal. In fact, experimentation has been at the core of extreme metal since the genre began. Rock, as previously noted, has become an abstruse label that can be claimed by any new idiot who picks up a guitar.

The soul and language of the music in question here lies elsewhere.

When Nicholas Bullen founded what became Napalm Death, the sound was nothing but acoustic guitar and percussion noise. Eventually, through an interest in the music of Throbbing Gristle, Bullen met Justin Broadrick.23 In 1982, before joining Napalm Death, Broadrick had founded Final, a band that married ambient sound, the first so-called minimal compositions and saturated guitar. Grindcore is inherently indebted to industrial and noise music.

The noise trend coincided with the concerns of avant­ garde jazz as practiced around John Zorn in the late 1980s. This led Zorn to take a close interest in Napalm Death, Repulsion and Extreme Noise Terror. He also led Naked City, a group that recorded for a while on the Earache label. In 1991, Zorn, bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Mick Harris formed the cross-genre band Painkiller, which mixed jazz, grindcore, dub and ambient. Harris had left Napalm Death that year to pursue experimental projects, and in addition to Painkiller he formed Scorn, with Nicholas Bullen. Initially, Scorn was based on two drum kits and a beatbox,24 but the line-up

for Vae Solis, their first album, was identical to the lineup for the A-side of Scum, Napalm Death’s first album.

The group’s sound went from industrial to chiefly electronic to prefiguring dubstep. For the album Sound of the Animal Kingdom, the American band Brutal Truth wrote several tracks inspired by John Cage and Steve Reich and recorded an interpretation of Sun Ra’s It’s After the End of the World.

Black metal has always been associated with certain atmospheres, so it is not surprising that some of the genre’s musicians have developed ambient projects. Fenriz created Neptune Towers in 1993. Attila Csihar, of Mayhem, seems to have definitively taken his work in that direction, for one thing by founding the experimental project Ruin with the German artist Martin Eder.

At some point, anyone – or almost anyone – who has bathed long enough in extreme metal becomes taken with experimental and contemporary music. In France, the fanzines and mail-order suppliers Nuit et Brouillard and Fear Drop used to distribute improbable groups, often formed by musicians from the punk and extreme metal scenes. In the early 2000s, an alternative music fanzine to which I contributed devoted a feature to tracing extreme metal’s evolution toward abstract languages.25 What must be considered here is the definition of the notion of extreme itself. First and foremost, extreme is a condition. It is a way of understanding life, and only then applies to aesthetics and politics. It characterizes individuals who would experience a half measure as an amputation. When Georges Bataille was still a believer, he could write Notre-Dame de Rheims; after losing his faith, he had no trouble writing Story of the Eye. Bataille was the extreme. Before the war, Maurice Blanchot was at home on the far right; during the war, he rescued Jews and soon claimed allegiance to the extreme left. Blanchot was the extreme. For artists, the same sentiment comes into play. The Futurist Luigi Russolo, who invented the intonarumori (noise instruments) in the early twentieth century, ended his days far from the avant-garde practicing yoga. Russolo – and perhaps Duchamp and Hugo Ball – were the extreme. All this helps to understand how Mick Harris could easily go from Napalm Death to the

Un fanzine dédié aux musiques marginales auquel je contribuais consacrait au début des années 2000 un dossier témoignant de l’évolution du metal extrême vers des langages abstraits25.

C’est la définition de l’extrême lui-même qu’il faut considérer ici. Ce qu’est d’abord l’extrême, c’est une condition. Il est une manière d’appréhender la vie avant de s’appliquer aux domaines esthétiques et politiques. Il caractériserait des individus pour qui la demi-mesure serait vécue comme une amputation. Quand Georges Bataille est encore animé par la foi, il est capable d’écrire Notre-Dame de Rheims ; quand il ne l’est plus, il n’a aucune difficulté à écrire L’histoire de l’œil. Bataille est l’extrême. Avant la guerre, Maurice Blanchot est liée à l’extrême droite ; pendant la guerre il sauve des juifs et revendiquera bientôt son appartenance à la gauche la plus extrême. Blanchot est l’extrême. Pour les artistes, c’est le même sentiment qui opère. Le futuriste Luigi Russolo, inventeur des intonarumori (« bruiteurs ») au début du vingtième siècle, finira sa vie loin de l’avantgarde à pratiquer le yoga. Russolo – et peut-être Duchamp ou Hugo Ball – sont extrêmes. On comprend dès lors que Mick Harris puisse passer sans aucune difficulté de Napalm Death à un langage aussi minimal que Lull. L’extrême, c’est la limite sans cesse repoussée. C’est la négation même de la limite. C’est travailler sans filet.

Outre une manière d’être, l’extrême est également une bordure par-delà rien n’est possible. La mort incarne l’extrême-même en tant qu’expérience ultime. La mort est une certitude dont on ne sait à peu près rien excepté le fait qu’elle tiendra promesse. Jankélévitch écrit : « L’homme

ne vit que pour l’avenir, et cependant l’homme ne peut envisager l’extrême avenir : l’extrême avenir se perd, à l’horizon, dans les déserts du silence ; la finitude de notre existence empêche que la futuration ne se prolonge indéfiniment26. » L’extrême est donc une inconnue, une bordure floue. Ainsi, théoriser l’extrême produit nécessairement une littérature hallucinée.

C’est précisément dans cet extrême que réside la modernité du metal extrême. Il incarne cette volonté inesthétique telle que conceptualisée par Alain Badiou et Mehdi Belhaj Kacem. Le grindcore, le death metal, le black metal et les genres qu’ils ont engendrés incarnent cette bordure. Ils incarnent l’infamie du réel et la restituent. Ils ont fait de l’insoutenable leur langage. Aussi s’en prennent-ils à la musique tympalienne comme Duchamp s’en était pris à la peinture rétinienne.

It is working without a net.

Besides a way of being, the extreme is also a boundary beyond which nothing is possible. As the ultimate experience, death embodies the extreme. Death is a certainty about which we know almost nothing, except that it keeps its promise. Jankélévitch writes, “Man lives only for the future, and yet man cannot envision the extreme future: the extreme future is lost, on the horizon, in the deserts of silence; the finitude of our existence precludes the indefinite prolongation of the future.”26 Thus, the extreme is an unknown, a blurred border. And, therefore, theorizing about the extreme necessarily produces hallucinatory literature.

It is precisely in this extreme that the modernity of extreme metal resides. It embodies the affirmation of the inaesthetic, as conceptualized by Alain Badiou and Mehdi Belhaj Kacem. Grindcore, death metal, black metal and the genres they have spawned incarnate this border. They incarnate and reproduce the infamy of reality. They have made the unbearable their language. And so they rail against “tympanal” music just as Duchamp railed against retinal painting.

Il ne faut donc voir aucune gratuité dans la violence déployée à la fois par la musique et par l’image dans le metal extrême. Son caractère extrême est le fruit d’une violence restituée.

But what is the meaning of all this? Theodor Adorno, in discussing the music of Arnold Schönberg, wrote, “No artwork can flourish in a society based on violence without insisting on its own violence, but it thus finds itself in conflict with its own truth as the plenipotentiary of a coming society that no longer knows violence and has no need of it.”27 Yet, as Brecht put it, “When art makes peace with the world, it has always done so with a world at war.” Some people are willing to accept the idea that violence is intrinsic to human nature. Therefore, it would be wrong to view as gratuitous the violence employed in both the music and the imagery of extreme metal.

Its extremeness is the result of a reproduced violence.

Comment être artiste dans les décennies de la seconde moitié du vingtième siècle ? Le progrès a engendré des guerres perpétuelles d’autant plus abjectes qu’elles paraissent invisibles. Dans son introduction à Éros et civilisation, Herbert Marcuse notait que « le développement du progrès semble lié à l’intensification de la servitude.

Dans tous l’univers de la civilisation industrielle, la domination de l’homme par l’homme croît en étendue et en efficacité. Cette tendance n’apparaît pas comme un recul accidentel et passager sur le chemin du progrès. Les camps de concentration, les génocides, les guerres mondiales et les bombes nucléaires ne sont pas des rechutes dans la barbarie mais les résultats effrénés des conquêtes modernes de la technique et de la domination. L’asservissement et la destruction de l’homme par l’homme les plus efficaces s’installent au plus haut niveau de la civilisation, au moment où les réalisations matérielles et intellectuelles de l’humanité semblent permettre la création d’un monde réellement libre28 ». Difficile de faire une œuvre là-dessus. Alors quoi : une installation ? un film ? une chanson de rock ?

Déjà en 1951, le même Adorno, choqué par l’horreur nazie, écrivait : « Même la conscience la plus radicale du désastre risque de dégénérer en bavardage. La critique de la culture se voit confrontée au dernier degré de la dialectique entre culture et barbarie (…), et ce fait affecte même la connaissance qui explique pourquoi il est devenu impossible d’écrire aujourd’hui des poèmes29. » Ceux qui nous intéressent ici ont choisi l’extrême comme attitude et le bruit comme langage. Le grindcore, par exemple, pourrait être comparé à un bruitisme hérité de Russolo mais dans sa version postnucléaire.

Il en va de même du black metal. Souvenons-nous de Darkthrone qui avait spécifié au dos de l’album Transilvanian Hunger la phrase « Norsk Arisk Black Metal », entendez « Black Metal norvégien et aryen ». Le groupe avait dû présenter ses excuses dans un communiqué diffusé par le label. Ils insistaient à leur manière en précisant dans le livret de l’album suivant : « Darkthrone is certainly not a nazi band or a political band. Those of you who still might think so, you can lick Mother Mary’s asshole in eternity30. » La culture black metal puise son idéal dans l’abjection. C’est ce à quoi fait référence Fenriz

How could one be an artist in the second half of the twentieth century? Progress had led to perpetual wars all the more abject in that they seemed to be invisible. In the introduction to Eros and Civilization (1955), Herbert Marcuse observed that “intensified progress seems to be bound up with intensified unfreedom. Throughout the world of industrial civilization, the domination of man by man is growing in scope and efficiency. Nor does this trend appear as an incidental, transitory regression on the road to progress. Concentration camps, mass exterminations, world wars, and atom bombs are no ‘relapse into barbarism,’ but the unrepressed implementation of the achievements of modern science, technology, and domination. And the most effective subjugation and destruction of man by man takes place at the height of civilization, when the material and intellectual attainments of mankind seem to allow the creation of a truly free world.”28 Not easy to make an artwork about that.

What then: an installation? a film? a rock song? In 1951, Adorno, shocked by Nazi horrors, wrote, “Even the most extreme consciousness of doom threatens to degenerate into idle chatter. Cultural criticism finds itself faced with the final stage of the dialectic of culture and barbarism. … And this corrodes even the knowledge of why it has become impossible to write poetry today.”29 The artists who interest us here have chosen the extreme as attitude and noise as language. Grindcore, for example, could be compared to a noise art handed down from Russolo, but in a post-nuclear version.

The same applies to black metal. Consider Darkthrone, who specified “Norsk Arisk Black Metal” – Norwegian Aryan Black Metal – on the back cover of their album Transilvanian Hunger. The band was forced to issue an apology in a statement released by their label. They reiterated it, in their own way, by including this message in the booklet of their next album: “Darkthrone is certainly not a Nazi band nor a political band. Those of you who still might think so, you can lick Mother Mary’s asshole in eternity.”30 Black metal culture draws its ideal from abjection. This is what Fenriz refers to in saying that the genre requires an “ugly mind.” And this trait coincides squarely with the taste for infamy fixed in the thinking of Bataille or Sade. Elle n’est pas moins éloignée non plus d’Arthur Rimbaud lorsqu’il se vante dans Une saison en enfer de faire « de l’infamie une gloire et de la cruauté un charme ».

Mais les adorateurs de l’infâme sont-ils pour autant totalement mauvais ? Pas trop vite. La première fois que Rimbaud fugue du domicile parental, c’est pour venir fêter la République à Paris ; il participera un temps à la Commune de Paris. Souvenons-nous de Richard Wagner dont les croyances sincères en les légendes nordico-germaniques, partagées par le black metal originel, ont été récupérées par les nazis. N’était-il pas lui-même anarchiste ? Il a été un camarade de barricades de Bakounine.

Révolutionnaire notoire, il a dû fuir l’Allemagne. Il en va de même pour les musiciens de black metal. Comme l’a très bien souligné Gilles Deleuze, il ne faut absolument pas comprendre le « par-delà le bien et le mal » de Nietzsche comme « par-delà le bon et le mauvais ». Ainsi, les convictions politiques d’Euronymous de Mayhem sont loin de l’extrême droite32. L’insoumis Fenriz est revenu avec Darkthrone à un langage essentiellement crust punk, un crust punk dont les valeurs initiales sont indissociables d’une pensée de gauche.

metal was not far from Bataille’s mind when he chose to publish Story of the Eye under the pseudonym Lord Auch, “a provocative contraction of ‘Dieu aux chiottes’ [God in the shithouse].”31 Nor from the mind of Arthur Rimbaud when, in A Season in Hell, he speaks of turning “infamy into glory, cruelty into charm.”

But does this make worshippers of the infamous totally bad? Not so fast! The first time that Rimbaud ran away from home, it was to go celebrate the Third Republic in Paris, and he briefly joined the Paris Commune. And let’s not forget Richard Wagner, whose sincere belief in Norse and Germanic legends, shared by the original black metalists, was hijacked by the Nazis. Was he not an anarchist? He had been on the barricades with Bakunin and as an actively revolutionary was forced to flee Germany. The same is true for black metal musicians. As Gilles Deleuze rightly pointed out, Nietzsche’s “beyond good and evil” absolutely must not be understood as “beyond good and bad.” Thus, the political convictions of Mayhem’s Euronymous are far from the extreme right.32 With Darkthrone, the non-conformist Fenriz returned to an essentially crust-punk language, a crust-punk whose initial values were inseparable from leftist thinking.

An exhibition like Altars of Madness necessarily reflects a limited choice, for the list of artists directly influenced by extreme metal is seemingly endless. Extreme metal’s tornado of decibels has left its mark on a generation of painters. Examples other than those shown in the exhibition include the knots of purple-blue flesh of Gerald Collings’ flayed bodies and the enigmatic and hallucinatory landscapes of Dan Attoe. At times, the extreme itself is at work, as in the devastating performances of Xavier Chevalier, or in João Onofre’s installation Box Sized DIE, a soundproofed 183-cm steel cube activated by a metal band when on exhibition. In each performance, the guest musicians are subjected to the limit-pushing experience of playing in a confined space where the sound is compressed and running the risk of asphyxiation. In a recent project by Nader Sadek, known for forming the band In The Flesh, the artist’s skin serves as the material for his sculpture. Jérôme Poret, in his sound performances,

Dans un projet récent de Nader Sadek, connu pour avoir formé le groupe In The Flesh, c’est la culture de sa propre peau qui est le matériau de sa sculpture. Dans ses performances sonores, Jérôme Poret se mesure à l’architecture avec sa basse et son Ampeg. C’est à une expérience extrême qu’il soumet l’auditeur, à renfort de watts et d’un grain graisseux comme l’Electrophilia de Steven Parrino. Dans d’autres cas encore, ce sont les codes propres au genre qui sont à l’œuvre. C’est le cas dans les wall drawings en noir et blanc de Jérôme Poret aussi bien que dans les installations d’artistes telles que Sandrine Pelletier et Amy Sarkisian. Ce serait au final non pas une exposition mais une série d’expositions que mériterait un thème aussi singulier et ramifié.

He subjects the listener to an extreme experience with throbbing watts and a mighty crusty sound reminiscent of Steven Parrino’s Electrophilia. In still other cases, it is the genre’s own codes that are at work, as in Poret’s black and white wall drawings and the installations of artists like Sandrine Pelletier and Amy Sarkisian. Ultimately, it would take not one but a series of exhibitions to give this singular and many-branched theme its just due.

À travers les œuvres de dix-sept artistes, l’exposition Altars of Madness permet d’embrasser différents aspects parfois diamétralement opposés qui caractérisent le genre. Elle propose plusieurs axes de lecture et plusieurs entrées complémentaires. Plutôt que de se limiter aux seules caractéristiques formelles, ce sont les problématiques politiques et la notion d’extrême elle-même que l’exposition souligne. Elle révèle les différents modes opératoires selon lesquels une culture en marge – le metal extrême – a investi de manière souterraine l’art contemporain. Cet « underground » fin de siècle incarne pour les artistes contemporains un caractère insoutenable et une transgression typiquement modernes. Si les œuvres des artistes exposés ne sont pas toujours enracinées dans des positions extrêmes, elles n’en témoignent pas moins, considérées dans leur ensemble, d’une anarchie positive.

Through the works of seventeen artists, Altars of Madness offers a view of different, and sometimes diametrically opposed, aspects that distinguish the genre.

It proposes multiple possible readings and complementary points of entry. Rather than focusing solely on formal characteristics, the exhibition highlights political issues and the very notion of extreme. It reveals the various means by which an alternative culture – extreme metal – has subterraneously invaded contemporary art. For contemporary artists, this end-of-century underground embodies the unbearable and a typically modern transgression. While not all of the exhibited works are rooted in extreme positions, as a whole they testify to a positive anarchy.

Benjamin Bianciotto Se faire brûler, à l’instar de Glen Benton, bassiste et chanteur du groupe de death metal Deicide, une croix renversée sur le front, est-ce faire preuve d’une allégeance absolue et intemporelle à Saint Pierre, premier pape de l’Église catholique, et révéler ainsi un profond attachement au christianisme dans son ensemble ?

Pour ce cas particulier – Deicide –, étant donné le nom du groupe, ses textes et ses pochettes d’album, il est fort à parier que tel n’est pas le cas. Il ne s’agit pas pour autant d’une simple méconnaissance théologique. D’où vient alors ce décalage ? Du symbole lui-même. De sa capacité à détacher le signe de son référent. La croix renversée renvoie à un renversement des valeurs catholiques, geste primaire, à l’efficacité et à l’identification immédiates.

Qu’advient-il alors lorsqu’un artiste récupère ce symbole ?

Does branding your forehead with an inverted cross, like Glen Benton, bassist and vocalist of the death metal band Deicide, signify absolute, undying allegiance to St. Peter, first pope of the Catholic Church, and thus reveal a deep attachment to the whole of Christianity?

In the particular case of Deicide, given the band’s name, lyrics and album covers, the answer very likely is no. But not out of mere theological ignorance. Where does the disconnect come from? From the symbol itself. From its capacity to detach the sign from its referent. The inverted cross refers to the primary gesture of inverting Catholic values, to immediate effectiveness and identification. So, what happens when an artist appropriates this symbol?

Avant de rentrer plus avant dans ce questionnement, il n’est peut-être pas inutile de rappeler que les bases du metal extrême, comme beaucoup de mouvements musicaux, ont été posées par des groupes composés essentiellement d’adolescents, avec tout ce que cela comporte de liberté, de renouvellement et d’approximations. Les artistes qui travaillent sur ce type de courants ne conservent de ces époques que des souvenirs de jeunesse qu’ils ont mûris, puis pétris, pour les transformer en œuvre d’art. Ce passage de la musique à l’œuvre est primordial, et on ne peut comprendre pleinement une œuvre traitant de ces sujets sans intégrer cette dimension de métamorphose, sans prendre en considération la différence d’enjeux, de public, de réception et d’objectifs. Détournement, réappropriation, citation, prolongement, récupération : quel que soit le nom que l’on donne à la pratique, quelle que soit l’implication de l’artiste dans le milieu d’origine et son degré de sincérité, le résultat est le même. Contrairement au « fan art », l’art contemporain utilise le métal extrême comme un moyen, jamais comme une fin.

La relation au satanisme fonctionne sur un principe relativement identique mais accusant néanmoins des différences sensibles. La connaissance des symboles et de la dimension religieuse peut être comprise, acceptée, désirée ou rejetée à des niveaux divers. Implication

artists who address such movements retain from those days only the youthful memories that they have ripened, kneaded and transformed into works of art. The passage from music to artwork is crucial, and a work that deals with these subjects cannot be fully understood without taking the metaphorical dimension into account, without considering the difference in issues, audience, reception and objectives. Détournement, appropriation, quotation, extension, recycling: whatever the practice is called, whatever the artist’s involvement in the source community and degree of sincerity, the result is the same.

The relationship to Satanism operates on a principle that is relatively identical but still has significant differences.

Knowledge of the symbols and the religious dimension can be understood, accepted, desired or rejected at various levels. It can be a strong commitment or nothing but a fortuitous, almost accidental result, taken and decontextualized from its musical sphere. A Satanism of propagation, migrant, guide or stowaway.

Une fois ces précisions posées, il paraît désormais envisageable d’essayer de comprendre certaines des motivations qui poussent le métal extrême à puiser une large part de ses références dans le satanisme, références qui seront à leur tour appropriées par les artistes contemporains qui travaillent sur la thématique.

RÉBELLION La célèbre formule de John Milton, « Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven2 », résonne dans toutes les têtes d’adolescents fans de musique metal comme une vérité immédiate et inaliénable. Tout simplement parce que la figure de Satan comme Prince des Rebelles, seul capable de se révolter et de refuser le joug de la domination divine, est l’expression même de la rébellion adolescente contre toute forme d’autorité. Mais l’idée de restreindre cet acte de remise en question de valeurs imposées à une simple passade, bien que réconfortante, est dangereuse. Pour appuyer leur propos, certains ont tourné cette rébellion en révolte3.

Ce satanisme est alors dit prométhéen par le fait qu’il lie Satan à Prométhée qui, en dérobant le feu aux dieux pour le donner aux hommes, accomplit ce même geste de défi envers l’inaltérable volonté divine. Il ne s’agit pas d’un satanisme religieux mais bien plutôt de l’incarnation d’une forme de positionnement contre Dieu. Cet « athéisme » revendicatif est principalement porté par le grindcore. Héritier direct du punk et de sa fronde contre l’ordre établi et les valeurs bourgeoises, le grindcore manifeste cette idéologie politique de l’action.

Un exemple éloquent de ces croisements pourrait être World Downfall. Titre du premier album du groupe Terrorizer (Earache Records, 1989), il est également celui de plusieurs œuvres de Damien Deroubaix. Sur la pochette de l’album, on retrouve tous les ingrédients de ce monde en pleine désintégration : guerre, famine, révolte, cadavres, usine nucléaire, etc., et au milieu de ce chaos

With these clarifications in place, it should now be possible to attempt an understanding of some of the motivations that push extreme metal to draw its references in large part from Satanism, references which are appropriated in turn by contemporary artists who work with the theme.

REBELLION John Milton’s famous dictum “Better to reign in Hell than to serve in Heaven”2 resonates like an immediate and unalienable truth in the minds of all adolescent metal music fans. This is simply because the figure of Satan as the Prince of Rebels, alone capable of rebelling and rejecting the yoke of divine domination, is the very expression of adolescent rebellion against any form of authority. But the idea of relegating the questioning of imposed values to the status of simple fad, though comforting, is dangerous. To make their point, some have turned rebellion into revolt.3

trône le Christ rédempteur, bras ouverts. Le constat est sans appel. La dénonciation frontale. Retrouve-t-on ce Christ ressuscité au cœur de la série d’œuvres intitulées World Downfall de Damien Deroubaix ? Pas exactement.

Si les éléments de ruine en cours, de chaos mondial sont bien présents (cadavres, croix gammées, vaches sacrifiées, dérives capitalistes, sexualité obscène, etc.), pas de traces christiques. Pourtant, à y regarder de plus près, on aperçoit quelques croix renversées, venues du Seasons in the Abyss de Slayer (Def American Recordings, 1990), dans la première version de l’œuvre. Mais c’est World Downfall Part 3 qui nous interpelle. À la place du Christ, un squelette en manteau de gloire, les bras ouverts, auréolé, accueillant des têtes sur des piques devant un parterre de micros tendus et sous l’œil de caméras de surveillance. Dieu est mort, et il n’y a pas d’au-delà. Juste un monde en pleine décomposition et psychologiquement malade.

Satanism of this sort is called Promethean, for the fact that it links Satan to Prometheus, who, by stealing fire from the gods to give it to humankind, committed the same act of defiance toward the unalterable divine will. It is not a religious Satanism but, rather, the embodiment of a form of positioning against God. This confrontational “atheism” is promoted mainly by grindcore. A direct descendant of punk and its revolt against established order and bourgeois values, grindcore manifests the political ideology of action.

An eloquent example of this cross-pollination might be World Downfall, the title of the first album by the band Terrorizer (Earache Records, 1989) and also of several works by Damien Deroubaix. The album cover features all the ingredients of a fast-disintegrating world: war, famine, revolt, corpses, nuclear power plant, etc., and in the midst of the chaos rises Christ the Redeemer with open arms. The evidence is indisputable. The denunciation head-on. Does this Christ risen from the dead appear at the heart of Deroubaix’s World Downfall series? Not exactly. Though the elements of ongoing ruin, of global chaos are present (corpses, swastikas, sacrificed cows, capitalist excesses, obscene sexuality, etc.), there is no trace of Christianism. However, a closer look reveals a few inverted crosses in the first version of the work, reflecting Slayer’s Seasons in the Abyss (Def American Recordings, 1990). But it is World Downfall Part 3 that calls for attention. In the place of Christ, a skeleton in a cloak of glory, arms outstretched, haloed, welcoming heads on stakes in front of an audience of extended microphones and under the watchful eye of surveillance cameras. God is dead, and there is no afterlife. Just a world rapidly decaying and psychologically sick.

Il existe d’autres formes de rébellion, dont une forme dépressive, née de l’inaction, de la dépréciation volontaire jusqu’à la sape des fondements par le refus de prendre part au déroulement du monde. « Dépression et subversion » sont deux sources profondes de l’avantgarde et de l’art contemporain, avancera Catherine Grenier dans un ouvrage éponyme4. C’est un autre démon qui sort alors du chapeau, un diable bouffon, costumé, ridicule, clownesque, forme d’opposition au mouvement. C’est un autre aspect du grindcore, blasphématoire, ordurier. Si Anal Cunt représente bien cet aspect côté musique, un artiste tel que Théo Mercier en est le digne chef de file côté art.

DESTRUCTION La rébellion, arrivée à un point de non retour, doit s’extérioriser, prendre forme et créer. Pour cela, il faut détruire, abattre et recommencer. Si, immédiatement après sa chute, Satan étend sa domination sur les Enfers et s’apparente à la mort, le terrible naîtra de sa capacité, par ruse ou intimidation, à faire régner la terreur, la violence et le meurtre sur la Terre, ce monde qui lui appartient et qu’il domine. Deicide et Morbid Angel apparaissent aisément comme les leaders de cette fronde démoniaque, revendiquant des attitudes et des actes ouvertement antireligieux.

Imposer la domination du Prince des Ténèbres peut, comme on l’a vu, passer par un simple constat de l’état du monde ou, tel que c’est le cas ici, par l’expression d’une volonté souhaitant la destruction de Dieu et de ses idéaux. Répandre le chaos et la mort. Comme dans une installation de Zander Blom issue de la série The Travels of Bad (Scene 12) où l’élaboration savante de la destruction fait ressortir le pentagramme renversé et les cornes diaboliques tels des symptômes d’un satanisme symbolique. Comme dans les dessins dérangés et dérangeants de Sebastiaan Schlicher. Multiples mais unis, comme dans un amalgame foutraque de Chris Bors (Death to False Metal, 2005) ou un patchwork de Ben Venom (Am I Demon?, 2010 ; Don’t Wake me Lucifer!, 2010). Satan sème les morts, collectionne les âmes impures, rassemble son armée.

DESTRUCTION Reaching the point of no return, rebellion must act out, take shape and create. To do so, it must destroy, tear down and begin anew. Satan may have extended his domination over Hell and allied himself with death immediately after his fall, but the terrible would come from his ability, by ruse or intimidation, to institute a reign of terror, violence and murder on Earth, this world that belongs to him and which he dominates. The Apocalypse of St. John provides a hallucinatory glimpse of the chaotic state in which life becomes torture.

It was time to take up arms, no longer in defense but to attack. It was the moment when death metal seized power and imposed its demonic visions. Deicide and Morbid Angel easily emerged as the leaders of this demonic revolt, overtly claiming anti-religious attitudes and acts. Imposing the domination of the Prince of Darkness can be accomplished through a simple account of the state of the world, as seen above, or, as in this case, through the expression of a volition for the destruction of God and of his ideals. Sur les trois premiers albums du groupe (Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, Spiritual Healing), dont les pochettes parodient une religion défaillante ou moribonde, le « T » du nom est une croix renversée, la mort est présente, le sang dégouline, l’araignée attend son heure. Puis, sur les trois suivants (Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic), le « T » redevient croix grecque, plus neutre. La haine de la religion se retire du discours du groupe pour s’intérioriser. Les titres d’album sont à cet égard plus qu’explicites. A quick look at the evolution of the logo of the band Death can help to understand this progressive alienation. On the covers of the band’s first three albums (Scream Bloody Gore, Leprosy, Spiritual Healing), which parody a failing or moribund religion, the “T” in the name is an inverted cross, death is on hand, blood drips, the spider bides its time. Then, on the next three (Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic), the “T” reverts to a more neutral Greek cross. The hatred of religion withdraws from the group’s discourse and becomes internalized. The album titles are more than explicit in this respect. Humankind resumes its central role at the core of the world’s malfunctioning.

In Le portrait du Diable5, Daniel Arasse skilfully shows how, at the turn of the nineteenth to the twentieth century, under the influence of emerging psychoanalysis, the Devil ceased to be an external being to become the inner demon of the sick, the new possessed; before becoming the fellow traveller of the 1950s bad boys, dancing to the sounds of rock’n’roll, the “music of the Devil,” and ending up in the heart of adolescents tormented by libertarian ideas. Both Martin Bladh’s flaunted, mutilated bodies, naked madness, and Hwan Jahng’s works on paper (HH MK1; 2012, Warlord-Revenge, 2012), whose twists and turns swarm with satanic signs in which the mind drifts into oblivion, illustrate the internal burning that consumes the contemporary damned.

ILLUMINATION AND DARKENING Of the three extreme music movements, black metal is the one that has inspired the most literature and is currently receiving renewed attention through theoretical, sociological and philosophical exploration. These studies are no doubt owed in part to the fact that it is the most obscure, most occult of these movements, the one most heavily cloaked in shadow, unlike death metal and grindcore, which are often openly explicit. It is probably also the one with the most connections to Satanism and its imagery.

A snapshot of the history of black metal could be established by dividing it into three successive phases: the first featuring explicit satanic imagery (Venom, Bathory, etc.);

the second, more pagan, rebellious, anti-religious (Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, etc.), which spawned a large-scale, more general-public Satanist movement verging on the ridiculous; and, lastly, the third wave, freed of diabolical imagery (Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice, etc.). Despite the evolution, these visions are marked by a common figure: Archangel Lucifer, “bearer of light.”

Nineteenth-century Europe saw him as the mirror portrait of Romanticism. A black mirror, of course. But the mirror of a wounded, tormented, infinitely melancholic, saturnine interiority. John Milton’s prisoner, Charles Baudelaire’s lonely man, Franz von Stuck’s pensive figure. The only one able to illuminate the darkness. “We circle in the night and we are devoured by the fire,” the actors of the scene might proclaim; devoured by the creative fire emerging from destruction, from fascination with ruin. Black metal paints itself in all its facets and draws itself in chiaroscuro. A myth that identifies viscerally with many artists working in its realms, whether famous like Banks Violette, more obscure like Terhi Ylimäinen, deeply engaged like Nader Sadek, or drawing on mythological sources like Fredrik Söderberg.

Des trois mouvements de musique extrême, le black metal est celui qui a suscité le plus de littérature et qui connaît à l’heure actuelle un regain d’intérêt via une exploration théorique, sociologique et philosophique. Ces études s’expliquent sans doute en partie par le fait qu’il est, parmi ces mouvements, le plus obscur, le plus occulte, celui qui laisse le plus s’étendre sa part d’ombre, contrairement au death metal et au grindcore qui sont souvent ouvertement explicites. Il est aussi probablement celui qui a le plus d’accointances avec le satanisme et son imagerie.

Pour établir un aperçu rapide de l’histoire du black metal, nous pourrions la découper en trois phases successives : la première à l’imagerie sataniste explicite (Venom, Bathory, etc.) ; la deuxième plus païenne, rebelle, antireligieuse (Burzum, Darkthrone, Emperor, etc.) qui a donné naissance à un mouvement d’ampleur, plus grand public, sataniste jusqu’au ridicule ; puis la troisième vague enfin, libérée de l’imagerie diabolique (Liturgy, Wolves in the Throne Room, Krallice, etc.). Malgré ces évolutions, une figure commune s’impose à ces visions – Lucifer, l’archange « porteur de lumière ». Le dix-neuvième siècle européen a trouvé en lui le portrait en miroir du romantisme. Miroir noir, il va sans dire. Mais miroir d’une intériorité blessée, tourmentée, infiniment mélancolique, saturnienne. Le prisonnier de John Milton, le solitaire de Charles Baudelaire, le pensif de Franz von Stuck. Le seul à même d’illuminer la noirceur. « Nous tournons en rond dans la nuit et nous sommes dévorés par le feu », pourraient clamer les acteurs de cette scène, ce feu créateur émergeant de la destruction, fascination de la ruine. Le black metal se peint de toutes ses facettes et se dessine en clair-obscur. Un mythe qui s’identifie viscéralement avec nombre d’artistes évoluant sur ses terres, qu’ils soient désormais célèbres tels que Banks Violette, plus obscurs comme Terhi Ylimäinen, profondément impliqués comme Nader Sadek ou puisant dans les sources mythologiques à l’instar de Fredrik Söderberg.

derrière le symbolisme, le cryptage de l’abstraction. La plupart des logos de groupes de black metal tendent, par leur volonté de s’approcher de l’indéchiffrable, vers l’abstraction. C’est parfaitement mis en valeur par la fascinante série Black Metal Cy Twombly, initiée en 2010 par l’artiste Andrew McLeod, les accumulations en profondeur de Sean Coggins (Posposed Images to be Drawn, 2007 ; Black Hole I, 2007), ou par les recherches crypto-satanistes d’Élodie Lesourd sur les logos de quatre méconnaissables cavaliers de l’Apocalypse (Famine (Emperor), Pestilence (Darkthrone), Death (Mayhem), War (Burzum), 2008).

But, similar to the vampire and contrary to Satan Prince of this World, that devil does not always like the spotlight and often prefers to hide behind symbolism, the encoding of abstraction. Aiming for the indecipherable, most of the logos of black metal bands tend toward abstraction.

Perfect examples of this include the fascinating series Black Metal Cy Twombly, begun by the artist Andrew McLeod in 2010, the profound accumulations of Sean Coggins (Posposed Images to be Drawn, 2007; Black Hole I, 2007), and Élodie Lesourd’s crypto-satanic exploration of the logos of four unrecognizable horsemen of the Apocalypse: Famine (Emperor), Pestilence (Darkthrone), Death (Mayhem), War (Burzum), 2008.

Except that, in essence, the extreme is a question of boundary. It is going all the way, touching the limit, exploring the darkness, pushing back the lines until they break. The extreme drives to extremism. And to its offshoots.

The far right is home to the principal negative sources of attraction. There are well-known flirtations with Satanism: Heinrich Himmler’s Ahnenerbe, an occult Nazi society that fundamentally rejected Christianity as a debased derivative of Judaism, has inspired cascades of legends and genuflections by small groups who merely perpetrate the obvious comparison of Hitler to the Antichrist. The same is true of black metal: from the pagan and nationalistic ramblings of Varg Vikernes (Burzum) to the identity ramblings of Kommando Peste Noire in France, to youthful transgressions (the famous “Norsk Arisk Black Metal” on the back cover of Darkthrone’s album Transilvanian Hunger, Peaceville Records, 1994).

And in contemporary art? No artist, to my knowledge, advocates such ideologies. Many play, use, denounce or provoke with the symbols, but none would openly declare themselves drawn by these dark zones.6 Simply because no stage would be open to them, and no audience? Or because art, the last bastion of absolute liberty, can no longer incorporate provocations likely to rock its foundations? Swastikas, inverted crosses, obscenities – no matter what may be said, censorship is nowhere near predominant in the art world of

Seulement, l’extrême est fondamentalement une question de frontière. C’est aller au bout, toucher la limite, explorer les ténèbres, repousser les lignes jusqu’à la rupture.

C’est du côté de l’extrême droite que se situent les principales sources d’attraction négatives. Il y a des flirts avérés du coté du satanisme : l’Ahnenerbe de Heinrich Himmler, société occulte nazie rejetant foncièrement un christianisme considéré comme dérivé appauvri du judaïsme, a inspiré légendes et révérences en cascades par de nombreux groupuscules qui ne font que perpétuer un rapprochement qui fut celui, immédiat, d’associer Adolf Hitler à l’Antéchrist. Il en va de même dans le black metal : des divagations païennes et nationalistes de Varg Vikernes (Burzum) à celles identitaires de Kommando Peste Noire

en France, aux errances de jeunesse (le fameux « Norsk Arisk Black Metal » au dos de l’album Transilvanian Hunger (Peaceville Records, 1994) de Darkthrone).

Et dans l’art contemporain ? Aucun artiste, à notre connaissance, ne prône de telles idéologies. Beaucoup s’amusent, utilisent, dénoncent, provoquent avec ces symboles, mais aucun ne se permet de se déclarer ouvertement attiré par ces zones d’ombre6. Tout simplement parce qu’il n’aurait pas de scène ouverte pour le faire, pas de public non plus ?

Ou parce que l’art, dernier bastion de liberté absolue, ne peut plus intégrer de provocations susceptibles de le faire trembler sur ses fondements ? Croix gammées, croix renversées, obscénités, quoi qu’on en dise, la censure est loin d’être prépondérante dans le monde de l’art de nos sociétés occidentales républicaines. Mais réduire l’art – qu’il traite ou non d’ailleurs de ces questions de religion ou de musiques extrêmes – à cela serait une erreur dramatique.

Manipuler ce type de symbole peut se révéler extrêmement pertinent. Tout dépend de la manière de le faire. Et de son but. Ce qui importe est, une fois de plus, non pas le moyen mais la fin de l’œuvre.

To constrain these diabolical, shifting and creative hordes of mingled artists and musicians, whose “name is Legion” (Mark 5:9) and who blithely defy authority and propriety while redefining beauty, while altering the lights of the world. To dismiss them in a desperate attempt to battle against Marduk’s declared prophecy: Heaven Shall Burn… When We Are Gathered.7 But would it not be preferable to simply choose to convert and let yourself be convinced to brand your forehead with an inverted cross?

Mick Harris est l’inventeur du terme « grindcore » et la personnalité fondatrice du genre par le biais de Napalm Death. Également l’inventeur du terme « blast beat », il est une référence pour tous les batteurs de metal extrême.
