Member of the Month: Jasmin Boporai

Congratulations,

Jasmin is currently a sophomore, whose main hobby is art, especially when it comes to oil painting. Joining Key Club has allowed her to meet a variety of new people as well as learn new leadership skills. In fact, Jasmin took the initiative to volunteer as Project Captain for a few service events. She volunteers often because she loves to meet new people while serving the community at the same. In fact, she has accumulated over fifty service hours! Her favorite event so far has been the Insane Inflatable 5K. Jasmin has attended a majority of the club meetings, while always willing to learn more about Key Club, especially during the officers’ candy questions.

Jasmin on being the April Member of the Month! The officers and I appreciate the times you have taken the initiative to sign up as Project Captain. Additionally, you do your best to learn about new leadership opportunities. Keep being a KEY leader within the club.

- Andrew Yu, Member Recognition head 20152016

Meet the Officers President: Michelle Nguyen Hey Monsters! My name is Michelle Nguyen, and I am your 2016-2017 Franklin Key Club President. Like a lot of you now, I joined Key Club as a shy and awkward freshman. I was still that incredibly quiet underclassman until I met the Key Clubbers who will actually be graduating this year. Those people got me to go to more service events, more fundraisers, more division and even district events. They inspired me to be where I am today, and in the next year, I hope to be that driving force for some of you. In the next year, I hope to bring the club to serve at least 6600 hours to the community, raise at least $2000 for our charities, and increase member involvement above the club level. Though there are over 200 of you, I'd like to try and meet each and every single club member at least once by the end of my term. Fun fact: Chances are, I'm more awkward than you.

Vice President: David Guo Hey guys, my name is David Guo, I'm a junior this year and I'm going to serve as your vice president in the upcoming 2016-2017 term. I'm 16, and I was born on May 28th, 1999. My goal for this term is simple: I want more people in our club involved in the club and division level. The plan, while simple, still requires a lot of effort, and a lot of needed cooperation. In the end, I want to see our club continue to shine as one of the exemplary clubs of Division 7 South; that means increased positions, increased effort, and increased cooperation. Through the committee heads, I want to establish a long lasting tradition of a system of committee heads that all work together and delegate work almost autonomously. But besides my goals for the term, I play basketball for a team, and my favorite part about Key Club is most definitely the community aspect. Working together in service in a well organized team is in my eyes the heart of Key Club. Looking forward, hopefully every member who wants this can experience it fully throughout the year. Thank you guys!

Secretary: Mary Ramirez Hey Monsters! My name is Mary Ramirez and I am looking forward to being your 2016-17 club secretary. I'm so excited to start my term and continue my service to my school, community and all of our lovely members. Like the inverted pyramid, my main focus is on the members which means I will do everything in my power to ensure the members are satisfied. Since checking hours is an important issue, I plan to establish a more efficient and user-friendly way to check your constantly updating hours. Additionally, I hope to motivate more members to try being Project Captain for events with step-by-step instructions, incentives and help with any questions or concerns you guys might have. Fun, random fact: My favorite color is periwinkle. Yes, it is the name of a fairy in Tinkerbell, but it is also a shade of purple and blue. As a child, I love both purple and blue and could never chose which one I liked better so when the time came to paint my room, I picked a color that could be considered both purple and blue from different lighting. In retrospect, that was a smart decision if I do say so myself. Hey, I warned you guys from the start that this would be random. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to serve the Franklin Key Club members and if you have any suggestions/concerns/questions for this

Treasurer: Alissen Trinh Hello! My name is Alissen Trinh and I am serving as your soon-to-be 2016-2017 Treasurer! I am a current sophomore, incoming junior, and I'm looking forward to working with all of the key clubbers in our division to make key club become an even more amazing contribution to our communities. My goals this term include improving the amount of funds we receive from fundraisers to give more love to our charities and reduce costs for larger events such as Fall Rally North and DCON. Of course, in order to achieve these goals I plan to organize more inclusive and appealing fundraisers and hopefully hold more large-scale events where multiple different clubs can participate and have fun while helping out. I want our members to want to attend these fundraisers and, above all, enjoy them! I still have many other goals that I hope to accomplish, but these are just a few to show what I'll be working on, and I hope all of you will be willing to help me reach for these stars! To be completely honest, I don't really have much to say about myself that's unique or interesting. A little fun fact about myself though is that I'm obsessed with turtles (the emoji though) and I LOVE tea and sushi. I am also not the emo girl from 2009, and I hope I can become friends with all of you (or at least know each others names)! Was this random enough that I no longer seem intimidating?

DCON 2016: Guardians of Serv

My first ever experience at DCON was fun and an amazing weekend I will never forget. I learned a lot of things in regard to key club and leadership as well as me tons of new people. It was so bitterswee to see officers be awarded and distinguished and retire and seeing the new elects too. I highly encourage others to g attend DCON if you are given the oppor tunity, its truly a one of a kind and memo rable experience. — Nadia Lee My first DCON was something unforgettable. I decided to attend after one member from our club couldn't attend anymore and looking back on it I'm glad I went. From all the different seminars where I learned so much, to all my new friends I made because of DCON, it was one of the most amazing weekends of my life. - Jason Lam

2016 Term: March

I was honestly surprised being recognized as the member of the month on the division level since I've only been serving for only 3 months. First, I would like to say that in the beginning my goal was to only finish the required 15 hours for the club. But through each event, I met new people and little by little my perspective of key club and volunteering changed and being recognized as member of the month only made me work harder which made me realize my true passion for key club. I feel that recognizing members for their hard work also motivates other members to strive for these goals. And once a member is rewarded, we will only set higher goals for ourselves. During the DCM I was simply expecting news and club updates but the icebreakers also allowed me to meet new members dedicated to key club. And after the DCM their was a service event where I also had fun since I was able to bond even further with members from other clubs. Furthermore we were motivated to create these simple crafts since it was for the children, and we wanted to make them smile. - Jericho Mata

March 18, 2016. To be honest, I wasn’t planning to attend March DCM (for reasons that are now lost to me) up until an hour before I would need to leave. But, I am very thankful that I made that spontaneous commitment to go. Upon arriving to Florin High School, I exchanged greetings and bittersweet sentiments with my friends and fellow officers from other schools (since this would officially be the last DCM of our term), then I went to join Cynthia Tze and the rest of the board to rehearse officer updates. Our last minute preparations consisted of a scrambling for props (dollar bills from my wallet and Jericho’s) and “choreographing” awkwardly hilarious scenes. David Guo read the script as the board and I (minus Eileen) acted out the story. I think my favorite part was trying to “make it rain” with dollar bills when the part about fundraising came up but failing miserably. The officer update skits from the other clubs were really cute; the theme of skits was a welcome change from different types of puns. Just after the DCM was the Caring with Crafts event, so the DLT promptly booted us from the multipurpose room as they set up. Outside was a bunny that sat still enough for curious and bemused Key Clubbers to take photos and videos of from a relatively close distance. We returned inside and saw several DIY workshops devoted to making crafts for children in hospitals: flower headbands, pinwheels, friendship bracelets, greeting cards, and yarn hats. The friendship bracelets I made were very simple, but making those bracelets was a good way to destress and semi-socialize with people. - Pauline Tze, 2015-2016 Treasurer

Spring Eggstravagan

I enjoyed my time vol teering at the Spring E stravaganza. I t was re ly fun hiding the eggs seeing the excitement the children found ea one individually. I rea enjoyed this event an Recommend that peo volunteer here next ye Thank you.

- Krisha Cus

At this Easter-themed Fairy Tale Town event, my good friend, Krisha, and I worked at the prize center, where the children would exchange the eggs that they found on their hunt for some goodies! It was really nice experience, seeing the kids become so happy, which made the parents happy, and this joy was kind of infectious. This community service event was really fun to volunteer at, and I recommend everyone if they ever have a chance, to volunteer at Fairy Tale Town!

Kiwanis One Day Photo Credits: Cassandra Woo

'Just like any other Kiwanis Family event, this day was like no other. Despite the tedious weeding that we did throughout the day, it was a day full of fun and bonding with fellow Key Clubbers, Circle K'ers, and Kiwanians. I love going to these events because of this, always having the opportunity to meet random strangers and ending up making friends for life.' - Michelle Nguyen (Club President)

From pulling out weeds to transporting wood chips for the play ground, Kiwanis One Day made me feel like we were united, contributing to something greater. Sometimes we're so caught up in our own club or division that members often forget that we are a part of the Kiwanis Family. So attending these Kiwanis events along with Key Clubbers from other divisions is a really fun and rewarding experience. - Mary Ramirez (Club Secretary)

Last year I talked briefly in unintended pretentiousness and convoluted grammar about my time at Kiwanis One Day; this year, in a similar fashion, I'm going to do the same. Looking back, my last Kiwanis One Day was remembered by a sense of industry, the emphasis of working hard. This year, I felt that my time at Kiwanis One Day was one of bonding, friendship, and intimacy. This year, I didn't just work alone with 2 other people pulling weeds and planting herbicide all day-- this year I worked with the whole division. Although my whole time there involved pulling weeds, I felt immensely happy knowing that the work done was with everyone, and the reward was shared with everyone. Even as the weeds grow back next year, even as the seniors leave and new freshmen come, the Kiwanis One Day event will stay in my mind for its coarse but emotional nature. - David Guo (Club Vice President)
