What goes into raising a 4-H project?

The 4-H program promotes the “learn to do, by doing” mind-set in youth. The process of selecting, caring for, and raising these animals to the best of their ability is the job of the 4-H youth, who range in age from 6 years to 21 years. Through mentors they discover what their animal likes to eat and what nutrition the animal needs, what makes the animal most comfortable (large pen size, clean bedding, feed variety are examples), how to identify health problems and determine a course of action to resolve the issue, and how to train these animals to follow a lead, have a bath, and learn to accept pets and scratches from their human care takers.

Raising a beef animal is hard work! 4-H members start a beef market project in October and typically finish in May or June. Likewise, members start a market Lamb project in March and finish in May or June. Feeding, grooming, pen cleaning, and animal care culminate in countless hours of work by the members to grow and deliver a quality animal to the buyer.

RESALE PROGRAM

For those wishing to resale their steer or lamb, The Show and Sale committee will have a minimum resale price posted at the Show and Sale. All resale steers will be insured and held at Juwill Farms until they are run through the following Tuesday’s sale at Rosehill Auctions. Those wishing to resell their lambs, please contact the show and sale committee to arrange care and transport for resale to Rosehill Auctions.

Be prepared with a plan for what you want to have happen to the lamb or steer you have purchased. You can take it home, send it to a processor or check out the explanation of our resale program.

This year all our steers have been booked for processing at the Cluny Red Colony near Strathmore. 14 steers will be shipped the night of the sale, the remainder will be held at Juwill Farms Ltd. for 5 days at which point they will be shipped to Cluny Red Meats for processing. All steers will be insured until they are processed. Cut and wrap sheets will be available at the show and sale. Please submit with your payment. Cut and wrapped beef will be shipped back to Carstairs and will be available for pick up on a specified date once processing is complete.

This year all our market lambs have been booked for processing at Red Deer Lake Meats. All market lambs will be shipped for processing the night of the sale. Cut and wrap instructions will be available at the Show and Sale. Please submit instructions with your payment.

If you or your company wishes to purchase an animal and donate it to the Food Bank–please be aware your company is responsible for the cut and wrap charges on the animal

Our 4-H members have fed these animals themselves. If you have questions about what feed these animals have had, please ask any of the members and they will tell you.

Interested in purchasing quarter or half an animal? Contact any of our Sale Committee members or club contacts for assistance in finding another buyer.

If you wish to bring your purchased steer or lamb home for a farm kill or prefer to use your own abattoir, please have arrangements made to transport your purchase home from the Show and Sale.
