PRESIDENTS GREETING BROCK TAYLOR LMAC PRESIDENT

Myself, along with the great board of directors, are very honoured to welcome each and everyone to the 2022 LMAC convention and Canadian livestock auctioneer championship. As we have all missed the last couple years, let’s all take advantage of this time together and enjoy the weekend. The 36 Auctioneers this year will give a great line-up of talent and stiff competition. Best of luck to all! A huge thank you goes out to Brent Brooks and the entire organizing crew for the work they have done. Without the amazing sponsorship we receive for this event each year, it wouldn’t be possible to host. Thank you very much to all our great sponsors. I would also like to give a thank you to the board members for all they do throughout the year. The past couple of years have been trying, to say the least, and the livestock marketing sectors worked through it very gracefully. Thanks and let’s enjoy Brock Taylor

HISTORY OF NORTHERN LIVESTOCK SALES, LLOYDMINSTER Th Lloydminster Stockyards first operated in the early 1950s as the Union Stockyards. In the The 1960s Weiller-Williams took over the market and ran it until 1975 when the Saskatchewan Wheat Pool Livestock Division purchased it. The Wheat Pool changed the name of its livestock division to Heartland Livestock after acquiring livestock markets in Manitoba. The marketing centre moved to the current location in 1994. Brent Brooks was a key negotiator in purchasing the land from the famous Justamere Farms. The market operated under the Heartland Livestock banner until 2017. At that time, the Brooks family acquired the Lloydminster and Prince Albert auction markets and combined with their market at Meadow Lake, successfully expanded Northern Livestock Sales. Over the years the market in Lloydminster has been upgraded and expanded to accommodate a capacity of over 6000 feeder cattle. Lloydminster runs two regular sales per week on Monday and Thursday. There are seasonal special sales from bred cows, replacement heifers and purebred productions sales. The Brooks family has revived the Lloydminster market making it the fastest growing livestock auction in western Canada. Brent Brooks has built a team of respected livestock marketers to serve the cattle producers of both Saskatchewan and Alberta. The Brooks family and their staff are proud to serve the cattle industry and look forward to future growth at Northern Livestock Sales.

HISTORY OF THE LMAC On May 18, 1979, in Winnipeg, a group of forward thinking auction market owners decided to form a national organization. Emerson Gill of Grand Bend, Ontario was nominated as the first chair of the organization. The meeting attracted market operators from British Columbia to Prince Edward Island. In the past, the terminal markets across Canada held a monopoly on the livestock auctions. Terminal markets in Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton The terminal markets had their own organization that did not allow independent operators to join. With more and more rural auction markets opening, the terminal markets were losing their monopoly on the livestock auction business. The terminal markets finally realized that the rural markets were here to stay and agreed to investigate the possibility of forming a new organization that would represent all livestock markets. o Th first annual meeting of the Livestock Markets Association of Canada was held in June, 1980 The w 43 people in attendance. LMAC continues to grow in members and is the recognized as with the national voice of the livestock-marketing sector in Canada. Today the Livestock Markets th Association of Canada still represents the majority of the livestock auctions across Canada. Associat Members off provincial pr livestock marketing associations that are in “good standing” are automatically utomat cally members mem mber of LMAC. MA

LMAC Policy on Traceability The Livestock Markets Association of Canada supports traceability in principle, with the following caveats: 1. That traceability regulations do not negatively affect the speed of commerce at auction markets, kets buying stations and assembly yards. 2. That the traceability regulations do not alter market neutrality by giving one sector of the industry an advantage or disadvantage over another, thus influencing how producers market arkket their livestock. 3. That the costs of implementing traceability do not outweigh the benefits. 4. That implementation of traceability regulations does not cause more handling of thee livestock thus creating weight loss, thus devaluing the livestock. 5. LMAC supports the use of “group movement documents and group movement vemeent re reporting” porting” on all livestock delivered to auction markets, buying stations and d assembly ass bly yards. yaards. LMAC LMA AC does not support mandatory scanning and reporting of individual animals nimals ls aat these ese sites. s s CANADIAN LIVESTOCK AUCTIONEER CHAMPIONSHIP

GREETINGS FROM COMPETITION CHAIRMAN RICK WRIGHT It is such a pleasure to welcome everyone to the 23rd Canadian Auctioneering Championships. Due to COVID-19, it has been two very long years since our last competition. This year brings competitors from across the Canada who are here to showcase their talents, but also to network with other auctioneers. Some will get tips from the past champions and make new friends who will last a lifetime. Others will take the opportunity to catch up with old friends. This is the first time LMAC has hosted its event in Northwestern Saskatchewan. Working with Brent Brooks and his crew has been a pleasure. The Brooks family and their staff have turned the Lloydminster market into one of Saskatchewan’s fastest growing markets. Their hard work and hands-on approach has been the blueprint for success. I must thank all of the sponsors of this event. Your support has been incredible, notably our buckle sponsors, Ross Annett and EBY trailers. Without the support of our sponsors from across the country, we would not be able to host such a high-class event. A big thanks to the auctioneers who travel to compete, the judges and the host of volunteers, many of whom you will probably never notice, working behind the scenes.

LMAC

Board of Directors

LMAC MAKES A DIFFERENCE! T Livesto The Livestock Markets Association of Canada’s Board of Directors represents the livestock li liv t marketing industry on a number of issues that support the ssustainability sus sta stain of our industry.

LMAC is made up of five appointed directors, one from each province west of Quebec, and five directors-at-large elected by the membership at the Annual General Meeting. The executive is appointed at the recommendation of the board of directors, with approval from the membership. The LMAC board of directors meets in person twice a year and deals with committee meetings and other issues via conference calls. Some of the board members serve on external committees such as Canadian Cattle Identification Agency, CCA and IGAC. LMAC is always looking for new directors to fill the directors-at-large positions on the board. If you are interested in serving the marketing industry on the LMAC board, please contact Brock Taylor or Rick Wright about letting your name stand. This is an excellent opportunity to work with and become one of the marketing industry’s leaders. Be a leader not a follower. This year there are three directors-at-large (two year term) and 2 directors-at-large (1 year term) positions to be filled at the AGM on Saturday morning. BROCK TAYLOR – LMAC President. For the last 17 years, Brock has co-owned and operated Taylor Auctions, Assembly and Exports in Melita, Manitoba, a family-run livestock business specializing in the testing of export cattle. He has also taken over the family business (Taylor Auction Service). In 2021 he reopened the auction market in Melita, Manitoba. He has been on the LMAC board for six years.

ALLAN MUNROE owns the Killarney Auction Mart in southern Manitoba. He was elected as President of the Manitoba Livestock Marketing Association in the spring of 2022. RYAN KONYNENBELT

LMAC’s 2019 Auctioneering Champion Ryan Konynenbelt is living his dream! From an early age he wanted to be an auctioneer, and also at very early age, he won the LMAC Championship in Thorsby, Alberta. When Konynenbelt entered his first competition in Winnipeg in 2015, he was self taught and pretty darn good for a kid just out of College. Konynenbelt challenged himself to get better after rubbing elbows with Canadian legends Danny Skeels, Ross Annett and other pros at Winnipeg. He attended auction school in Billings, Montana, polished his natural skill set and got more mic time. He was back in Brussels, and there were whispers that Ryan Konynenbelt had the tools to go all the way. The next year in Whitewood, after a third place finish, he was in the winner’s circle at the International Championship at the Calgary Stampede. That win got him a spot in the World Championships in Tulare, California. Fresh off the win in Thorsby, Konynenbelt was a top ten finalist at the worlds, living the dream, standing right beside the best in the world. In four short years, he had both a Canadian and International Champion buckle. If you know Ryan Konynenbelt, you know he is a mover and shaker, wanting to learn, willing to work, a man on a mission. The ownership group at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange recognized his potential and made him a partner in the market. As well as auctioneering, Ryan is also a cattle and sheep buyer. Konynenbelt had this to say about coming to LMAC: “Being able to be in the LMAC Convention setting as a young guy starting out, with auctioneers who have been in it for years, gave me the incentive to keep coming back to learn and gain more experience. When you love your career and the business you are in, these conventions allow you to immerse im m yourself with like-minded professionals!” Witth all With a that t success so early in life, it would be easy for a young man to get an inflated ego, as many before him hhave! have e! Not Noot Ryan Konynenbelt. He remembers and respects his roots. He recognizes that none of the success he has would w wou uld ha have happened without the support of his family and friends. “My family, and my wife especially, have been very ve ery supportive over the years. Always coming to cheer me on, no matter where the competition is being held, and supporting me tthrough oug the hectic “busyness” of the livestock auctioneer life.” Ryan Konynenbelt Konynenbeltlt - a true tru cham ch champion! ampion!
