SYTIEIA BROWN WINS STATE CHAMPION IN SHOT PUT EVENT By Amanda Callaghan
On Wednesday, February 16th, Elkton, Rising Sun, and North East’s qualifying athletes arrived at the Fifth Regiment Baltimore Armory, prepared for the adrenaline-fueled, nerve-wracking MPSSAA 2A State Indoor Championship. The Armory, built in 1901, loomed over the incoming buses with its fortress-type build. The 23 Cecil athletes prepared for their upcoming events, surrounded by just as skilled athletes from across the state. They were all determined to make the 2021-22 indoor season end with a bang. Inside the Armory was a unique track. Painted on the surface of a gym floor,
the track filled the area, having field events take place on the inside of the track. Unfortunately, the fact of the track being on a gym floor lead to less traction, adding additional complexity to the events. Large, square windows let natural light into the armory, giving the track a majestic shine. On that track, Cecil atheletes performed terrifically. In individual events, Katelyn Lacey of Rising Sun earned 9th in the 500 meter dash (1:28.48). Amanda Callaghan of Rising Sun earned fifth in the 800m setting an indoor personal record of 2:33.48. In the 1600, Savannah Lacey of Rising Sun won eleventh with a personal record of 5:54.38,
followed closely behind by North East’s Leanna Rogers, earning twelfth with another personal record of 6:00.37. Ella Cost of Rising Sun won twelfth in the 55m hurdles (10.81). In relays, Elkton’s boys 4x200 relay won eighth, running a 1:45.29 (Douglas McGonigle, Langston Belser, Brandon Turner, Allan Tate). Elkton’s boys 4x400 won 6th, running a 3:55.95 (Douglas McGonigle, Langston Belser, Tyson Caprinolo, Brandon Turner). In girls’ relays, Rising Sun’s 4x200 relay finished tenth with a 2:02.30 (Kaitlyn Martin, Lexi Haywood, Carly McCardell, Caroline Mercer). Their 4x400 finished eleventh, running a 4:48.89 (Georgia Mercer, Anna Cal-
laghan, Amanda Callaghan, Katelyn Lacey). Finally, Sun’s 4x800 of Amanda Callaghan, Eve Poteet, Katelynn Callaghan, and Katelyn Lacey won fourth (10:56.57). In field events, Elkton’s sophomore Sytieia Brown won the State Title in the 4kg shotput! Brown threw 38 feet and 4.5 inches, beating the second place finisher by three and a half feet. This is Brown’s second consecutive title in the shotput after winning the 2021 outdoor State Title in both shotput (37’ 3.5) and discus (119’ 10) as a freshman. She currently holds Elkton’s school record for the outdoor shotput, outdoor discus, and after this indoor season, the indoor shotput. Great job Sytieia!
In girl’s high jump, Brin Khanjar of North East won second place at the State Championship! She cleared 5’ 2, setting a personal record, and beating her personal record from the 2021 outdoor season (5’ 0). She now holds North East’s indoor high jump record. Congratulations Brin! Amanda Callaghan of Rising Sun followed in the girl’s high jump, finishing fourth (4’ 6). In the boy’s high jump, Rising Sun’s David Greenplate and Brigdon Bishop tied for 9th, both clearing 5’ 2. In pole vault, Rising Sun’s Dylan Zhan and Carly McCardell both came in 12th. Congratulations to all of the Cecil County athletes!

ELLA PENNINGTON BREAKING RECORDS AS SHE SWIMS INTO STATE FINALS By Kevin Phillips
BEL AIR–Elkton’s Ella Pennington entered the 2022 MPSSAA 3A/2A/1A North Region Swimming and Diving Championships looking to repeat her performance in the same events two years ago when she won two titles. Pennington accomplished her goals as she took home first place awards in the 100 yard butterfly and 100 yard backstroke to qualify for the state championship, breaking her own meet records in the process, and she credits her coaches and teammates for helping her be successful. “I work really hard, and my coaches are super encouraging. They talk me through
the race, and coach [Pat] Cline is big on visualizing the race beforehand,” Pennington said. “He has my teammates and I go through what happens when something goes wrong or something goes right and capitalize on your victories. I learned a lot from my teammates and coaches.” Pennington’s first individual event was the 100-yard butterfly, and she got off to a quick start and led for the majority of the race, finishing the event in 58.85 and beating her two-year old mark by 1.12 seconds. Pennington then followed that up with a victory in the 100-yard backstroke in 57.33, besting her 2020 meet record by nearly three seconds.
One key for her strong performances in the backstroke is that she is able to stay underwater for longer periods of time after making the turn, and that is a result of the work she does in practice with her club team. “It takes a lot of practice. On my club team, we really are hyper focused on mechanics and focus on the underwaters, the turns, the starts and the things that aren’t found in the basic yardage programs,” Pennington said. “We just practice a lot.” Cline says that one of the things that makes Pennington such a strong swimmer is that she knows her strengths and focuses on maximizing those strengths. “Her big thing is that
she knows what she does well, and that’s what she works on,” Cline said. “She has spent so much time working on her underwaters. That’s where she puts her effort because she knows that’s going to help her.” Elkton’s girls 200-yard medley relay team also qualified for the state championship meet based on their third place finish in the race, and Pennington who swam the opening leg of the race seemed more excited about qualifying for the team event than she did for individual events. “It certainly has given me encouragement. The big part was the relay. We opened up with a guaranteed spot in the states, all four of us, and that was epic beyond belief. I don’t

think we’ve ever done that before as a girls’ medley relay,” Pennington said. “So, that was epic. It has given me a lot of encouragement for myself and my team that we were able to do that.” Anyone who finished in the top three in the championship heats in each race automatically qualifies for the state championship while the 12 fastest times from non-automatically qualified participants from each classification also advance to the state championship, which gives several swimmers from the county a chance to qualify for the state meet.

DANIELS LEADS CHARGE IN 42-25 VICTORY OVER WEST NOTTINGHAM RAMS By Kevin Phillips
COLORA–Tri-State Christian Academy struggled on both ends of the floor grabbing rebounds in the first half of its Mid-Atlantic Independent League girls’ basketball contest against host West Nottingham Academy Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders picked up the intensity on the boards in the second half as they limited second chance opportunities and held the Rams to 10 points in the final two quarters to pull away for a 42-25 victory. “A lot of the 50/50 balls weren’t going our way,” Tri-State head coach Bill Smith said. “We had to decide if we wanted to
box out and rebound. We picked up our sense of urgency and began to box out and rebound.” With the score knotted up at 19-19 midway through the third quarter, the Crusaders ratcheted up the defensive pressure in their half-court trap, which forced several turnovers and low-percentage shots. As a result of those low-percentage shots, the Crusaders did not allow another field goal until there were four minutes to go in the fourth quarter, and after the missed shots, Tri-State’s bigs were in the right place to pick up the rebound. In that stretch in which the Crusaders did not allow a field goal, they went on a 20-1
run that gave them a 39-20 lead to take control of the game, and the duo of Mimi Daniels and Jules Harris combined for 16 points during the run. Daniels finished with 13 points, nine of which came during the game-deciding run, credits her teammates for creating open looks for her during the surge. “I felt pretty confident tonight because I got some good passes from teammates,” Daniels said. “We started off pretty bad, but once I started hitting my shots, I did a lot better.” Harris scored a gamehigh 14 points for Tri-State while the Rams got 10 points from Jenniah Odige.

WEST NOTTINGHAM RAMS HOLD ON TO UPSET CRUSADERS 65-62 By Kevin Phillips
COLORA–West Nottingham Academy found itself trailing by a point late in the fourth quarter after its 10-point lead to start the final quarter vanished against visiting Tri-State Christian Academy in a late-season Mid-Atlantic Independent League boys’ basketball contest Thursday evening. The Rams regained their composure and switched their defense, and that paid off as they scored 12 points in the last 2:45 of the contest to rally past the Crusaders to earn a 6562 victory. “Coach [Aaron Byrd] told us to stay composed. We shook the defense a little bit,” West Nottingham’s Keshawn
BIBLE TRIVIA
Gardner said. “That gave us a little momentum change. We did a great job overall and 44 [Tolu Semowo] did a great job rebounding, blocking shots and defending. We were trying to play the best basketball we can play.” The Rams started the fourth quarter with a 50-40 lead, but Tri-State opened the final frame with a 14-3 surge and took the lead for the first time since the second quarter when Jonte Jenson made a layup to make it 54-53 with 3:12 remaining. That lead was shortlived, however, as Gonzalo Lominchar Sanchez hit a three-pointer with 2:45 remaining to give West Nottingham a 56-54 lead, and the Rams kept the Crusaders at bay for the
remainder of the game as they made 7-10 free throws down the stretch. Those ten free throw attempts in the final minutes were a part of a game-long trend as West Nottingham attempted 24 free throws for the game, and that was a result of the team playing more aggressively than it did in a 71-57 loss in its previous game against TriState on January 31. “Before the game, our coach said attacking would be the key to winning because in the first game we played them, we didn’t do that,” Gardner, who had a game-high 30 points, said. “We were shooting and not getting to the basket. We went back and watched film and saw that we could attack.” Those free-throw op-
portunities turned out to be the difference in the game as the Rams had 19 more free throws than the Crusaders, who went 0-5 from the line, and head coach Bill Smith said his team had an over-reliance on three-pointers against West Nottingham. “We tend to live by the three, and we die by the three. The middle was wide open, and we begged the guys to get inside to score,” Smith said. “They weren’t doing it. We died by the three tonight.” Semowo had 19 points to help West Nottingham’s cause. Tri-State, who lost for the first time against in-county opponents this season, got 16 points from Sam Falko, 13 from Jeremiah Falko, 11 from Jenson and 10 from Kyle Rogers.

JEFFERSON LEADS GOLDEN ELKS TO
45-29 WIN OVER TOME TITANS
By Karina Serio
Elkton Girls Basketball Coach Gabe Sherrod has been working all season to teach his squad to play basketball the way he was taught to play. In a season that has had a pair of three-game losing streaks, the Lady Golden Elks have run off five straight wins after defeating Tome School 45-29 and Kenwood High School 47-31 on Thursday and Friday nights to close out the regular season. “I was coached by Givens Jr., but his dad Givens Sr. was always in the gym with me. They just talked all the time about knowing who you are as a basketball player. Being who I was, one of the more dominant players in this area at that time, knowing who I was on the court, knowing what I could do and what I could control,” said Sherrod, “Applying that to being a coach is about now just applying those things to what the whole team can do, what we all can control. I always preach to the girls to play Elkton basket-
ball. Don’t play anybody else's game but ours. If we do that, we're gonna be fine.” Mikayla Jefferson led the scoring for the Lady Golden Elks with 12 points and Payton Hardy added 11 points. “Finally they're listening. The one thing we talk about is sustaining runs trying to stay patient. Getting in a flow. Just making sure there's an ebb and a flow to the game.” said Sherrod. “I told the girls every game no matter who you're playing, it's gonna be a contest, it's competitive. Just staying in the ebb and flow, the girls really appreciated the coaching and the learning part of it. They’re really beginning to learn about basketball and how to move and play together.” Tome School opened an early lead, but then struggled on the road in Elkton. After falling behind in the second quarter, they never mounted a sustained run. Emmersen Peel and Alivia Carillo each scored nine points to lead the Titans in scoring.

Chase Bean added ten for Elkton in what was a balanced attack that saw all 13 players on Givens’ squad score. “I think it was a good win, it was an electrifying win that we can take into the postseason, to motivate us to show what we can really do if we play hard every game,” said Triplett. “Coach Givens is hard on us sometimes, but I think he does it because he loves us and he wants the best for us as men and as basketball players.” For Tome, Gavin Davis led the scoring with nine points. Elkton cruised past visiting Tome School 76-35 with a confidence-building win heading into postseason action last Thursday night. In a season filled with ups and downs for the Golden Elks, the win gave Coach Charles Givens Sr. 's squad something upbeat to build upon in the playoffs. “The post season right now, this game just allowed everybody to play in the game. Overall it allowed us to be conditioned as we move forward,” said Givens, “The only problem is we don't play for another week so we still gotta find some alternative ways to keep them running and doing what they’re doing.”

PERRYVILLE & BOHEMIA MANOR COMPETE AT 1A INDOOR TRACK REGIONALS
By Travon Morgan
If the phrase small but mighty were in human form, the Bo Manor and Perryville Girls’ and Boys’ track and field teams flexed their muscle at the 1A Central Regional Track and Field Championships on Tuesday, February 15th. Between the two teams, 29 different athletes qualified in their respective events--16 individually! At the outset, the Bo Manor quartet of Colleen Nelson, Paige Racine, Skylar Pizzulli, and Kathryn Scott placed 2nd in a tightly contested 4x800m relay (11:29.61). Not far behind in 4th place was Perryville’s relay that consisted of Hailey Myers, Brooklynn Myers, Hayden O’brien, and Taylor Young (12:45.34). Not to be outdone, the boys’ 4x800m relay foursomes from Perryville (Matt Grahe, Michael Young, Rowan Gatch, and Brady Martin--10:01.46) and Bo Manor (Evan Wakefield, Ethan Dell, Robert Heinzelman, and Samuel Dickerson--10:05.86) punched their tickets by finishing in 2nd and 3rd place, respectively. Two events later, Bo Manor showed why they are a perennial contender in the mid-distance/distance events.
Scott won the girls’ 1600m run by 24 seconds in a time of 6:22.97, and in the boys’ race, Dickerson (4:53.79) and Day Leone (4:54.35) finished 1-2. Later, the distance doubled with a similar result. Pizzulli placed 2nd in the girls’ 3200m run (13:16.98). Leone followed up his earlier runner-up performance with a win in the boys’ 3200m run (10:40.40), and was joined by teammate Anthony Czerwinski in qualifying for the State meet by finishing in 4th place (12:40.70). The sprinters, hurdlers, and middle distance athletes also showcased their efforts. In the 55m dash, Zach Ayers (7.09) came in 4th place. A pair of Perryville hurdlers, Anna Rando (10.73) finished 2nd in the 55h and Ty Stiffler (9.20) placed 3rd. Gatch placed 4th to qualify in the 500m dash. Martin qualified with a 4th place finish in the 800m run (2:28.36) and Bo Manor’s Maya Osborne (2:54.89) placed 2nd to second to secure her spot. Perryville demonstrated its power in the pole vault. Lily Heuisler won the girls’ event by vaulting 7 feet. The boys of Perryville made a clean 1-2-3 sweep, led by Young (9 feet), Anthony Baldwin (7 feet 6 inch-
es) and Chase Freburger (7 feet). Arianna Stanton (4 feet) placed 2nd in the high jump. Cameron Malone (35 feet 7 inches) just missed the victory by one inch in the shot put. To close out the meet, four sprint relay teams qualified for the state championship: Bo Manor’s girls’ 4x200m relay-Nelson, Racine, Marlaina Ellis, and Brianna Pollard); Perryville’s boys’ 4x200m relay-Ayers, Stiffler, Freburger, and Grahe (1:48.15); and finally, both of Perryville’s 4x400m relay teams--Rando, H. Myers, B. Myers, and O’brien (5:13.30) for the girls and Grahe, Stiffler, Young, and Ayers for the boys (4:14.18). All four squads placed in the top 5 of team scoring: Perryville’s girls finished with 72 points to place 2nd overall and Bo Manor scored 42 points for 4th place; the Perryville boys scored 80 points for a 2nd place finish while Bo Manor placed 5th with 47 points. As seen from the results and many contributions from all of the athletes, yes, small they are but mighty they continue to be. The 1A State Track & Field Championships will be held on Tuesday, February 22nd at Baltimore’s 5th Regiment Armory. Stay tuned.

Scott Reins Supreme For Bo Manor With Seven Threes

The Bohemia Manor Eagles hosted Rising Sun Highschool for The Eagles Senior Night that brought an exciting Thursday evening to the court. Previously Rising Sun had overpowered The Eagles in the beginning of the season scoring 53-34. However the electricity at The Eagles Nest and hard work from the boys of Bohemia Manor resulted in an impressive 71-44 win for The Eagles. Rising Sun began the game with a record of (5-12), while Bohemia Manor began with a similar record of (5-13). Both teams were seeking a win, but Bohemia
Manor upsets Rising Sun. Senior Captain of Bohemia Manor Jonas Scott, had an impressive game and was unstoppable throughout the evening. He had a total of 33 points, including 7 three-pointers. Senior Gannon Williams also had a good night with 8 points, which included 2 3-pointers. The Eagles presented their understanding of fundamentals in their defense, pressuring The Tigers, stealing the basketball, and even blocking attempts at the basket. The defense was led by three seniors including Tyler Losten, Jonas Scott, and Jakhi McCall. Despite multiple inju-
ries and pressure from Bohemia Manor, The Tigers kept up with The Eagles up until halftime. Senior Jeremy Frock of The Tigers shot a total of 17 points, while shooting 5-for-8 at the free throw line. Number 11, Nathan Wood also had an impressive game shooting four 2-pointers, and tallying 14 points in total. Despite the offensive efforts by Rising Sun, they began falling behind after the second half of the game. The end of halftime favored Bohemia Manor by only 2 points with a score of 29-27. The third quarter started with Bohemia Manor’s possession when Senior Dennis Kemether bounced-passed
strategically to Tyler Losten for a layup. Jonas Scott, Gannon Williams, Mason Williams, Ace Peirce, and Arcel Ramirez all continued to show off their shooting skills throughout the remainder of the game. A few drives into the paint from The Tigers was just not enough to keep up with The Eagles offense throughout the third and fourth quarter who stayed confident until the clock on the scoreboard hit 0:00. Expect to see hard work from both teams as the start of Basketball playoffs begins in a short time.

SEAHAWKS TAKE DOWN #4 CHESAPEAKE COLLEGE
By Karina Serio
It is rare that having an 18-game winning streak end is a good thing, but fighting to a twopoint loss against Division I Harcum College earlier last week set up Cecil College for a colossal victory against Chesapeake College. In a matchup of the #6 versus #4 Division II junior college teams in the country, the Seahawks dominated the Skipjacks for a 96-73 win. Powered by Darell Johnson’s double-double with 27 points and 14 rebounds, Cecil never seemed in jeopardy against the higher-ranked squad from the Eastern Shore. The Seahawks also dominated the boards, pulling down 51 rebounds against the Skipjacks’ 23.
For Coach Ed Durham the win was a good barometer for how the postseason might look for his team. “We felt like we needed to really have a good week against the team that beat us earlier in the year (Harcum),” said Durham. “We felt like this time of year, it's preparing you for the tournament. The ironic thing today is the fact that you win today, so that in March you might have to beat that team again on a neutral floor in a playoff game.” The 18-game winning streak was bookended with losses against Harcum College from up the road in Bryn Mawr. Harcum is ranked #8 in the Division I NJCAA polls. This win against Chesapeake will likely move Cecil College up in the rankings.

MOUNT AVIAT GIRLS HOLD OFF ST. ANN’S 29-24 TO START PLAYOFFS
By Katy Drost
Mount Aviat Academy girls varsity basketball team held off a determined St. Ann’s team on Saturday to win their first game of the CYM play-offs, Y-1 division. Although St. Ann’s started the scoring with a 3-point shot, Mount Aviat dominated the rest of the first half with solid defense and rebounding. Mount Aviat ended the first half ahead 8 points, helped by a three-point basket by Riley Bransfield in the last minutes of the second quarter.
PUZZLE SOLUTIONS FOR THIS WEEK:
St. Ann’s came roaring back in the second half, scoring 11 points to close the gap to within 2 points in the final seconds of the third quarter. The tightly contested game continued to be close in the fourth quarter, as St. Ann’s capitalized on free-throws to take the lead by one point with less than four minutes left. Top scorer Audrey DiPietro then brought Mount Aviat ahead 24 - 23 with 1:45 left to play. As the seconds ticked down, Adrienne Peticca saved a ball from going out-of-bounds with a pass to Mary Drost, who scored to give Mount Aviat a 3-point
lead. St. Ann’s, with no subs, couldn’t answer, and Peticca ended the game with one more shot, taking the final score to 29 - 24. St. Ann’s team managed to keep the score close in the second half with help from leader Teresina Deascanis, who scored 8 points. The win was particularly special to Mount Aviat, as they moved to the higher Y division for the play-offs after finishing their regular season 10-0 in the lower O division. Coach Rick DiPietro said he requested that the team move up to the Y division because he welcomes
the stiffer competition. He said he never doubted Mount Aviat’s ability to come away with a win. “I thought we started fast and ended slow, which was a little bit of a problem,” DiPietro said. He said the team had some trouble protecting St. Ann’s fast breaks, which is something they usually handle easily. Considering it was the first game in a new division, DiPietro said, the team showed up well. “It was a good game, with good energy in the gym,” he said.
