TIGERS FIGHT FOR STATE TITLE

By Kevin Phillips COLLEGE PARK–Rising Sun faced a three-run deficit entering the sixth inning of the MPSSAA 2A Softball championship game against top-seeded Calvert at the University of Maryland’s Taylor Stadium Saturday afternoon. The second-seeded Tigers did not let the deficit deter them as they scored three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to force the game to go to extras. However, they were unable to plate the go-ahead run in the top of the eight inning while the Cavaliers scored in the bottom half of the frame to walkoff with with a 5-4 victory and the state championship. “I knew we were going to fight back hard because we are not a team who

gives up,” Rising Sun pitcher Cadence Williams said of the rally. “We never do that, and we never will. I believe that we were going to go up there with a strong mindset and come back, and we did. I’m grateful for that, and we did have a second chance.” After giving up three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, the Tigers trailed Calvert 4-1 entering the sixth, but they got one of those runs back in the top of the sixth inning when Williams drove in Faith McCollough with a double to make it 4-2. Williams worked around a one-out walk in the bottom of the sixth to keep it a two-run game and give her team a chance to rally. Jayden Simpkins led off the top of the seventh with a walk, which was followed by two quick outs, setting

the stage for Jordan Lynch, and Lynch bounced back from some poor at-bats and kept the Tigers in the game when she rocked an outside fastball to left field for an RBI double to make it 4-3. Lynch came to the plate with a mindset of wanting to make up for not coming through in her other plate appearances. “I knew I had to come up big for my team there because in my other at-bats, I didn’t,” Lynch said. “I knew I had to come up big in that moment, and that’s what I did.” With the tying run 120 feet away, Bri Cole smashed a double to left, plating Lynch to complete the Rising Sun comeback and tie the game at 4-4, and Williams said the Tigers’ offensive output in the sixth and seventh innings was a result of the team having a

better approach at the plate. “In the beginning, it was a little rough. We weren’t very selective with our pitches. That cost us a lot of strikeouts by swinging at things we shouldn’t have been,” Williams said. “Further into the game, we were hitting more and being more selective with higher pitches. It worked out well for us.” In the bottom of the seventh and one out, Williams sent the game to extra innings when she struck out Emily Davis and forced Emma DeBoer to ground out to shortstop. The Tigers put run-

ners on second and third with one out in the top of the eighth, but DeBoer induced two popouts to end the threat, giving Calvert a chance to take the state title. Emily Milam, courtesy running for DeBoer, took her place as the free runner at second base to start the bottom of the eighth inning, and she moved to third on a throwing error on a bunt by Clara Wood. With runners on first and third and one out, Grace Atherton blooped a single to right that fell just in front of the Rising Sun right fielder, plating Milam and giving the

Cavaliers the state title. Calvert took the lead in the bottom of the first when Karlee Hughes scored on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, but the Tigers evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the fifth when Katherine Meadows scored on a Sam Dixon groundout. The tie was shortlived as the Cavaliers plated three in the bottom of the fifth, starting with Atherton scoring on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt, and they added two more runs in the frame when DeBoer drove in Hughes and Alexis Drayer to make it 4-1, setting the stage for the dramatic final three innings.

Rising Sun head coach Paul Taylor said the team’s slow start was due to nerves, but as the game went on, he could see them getting more and more comfortable, which allowed them to mount the comeback. “I think the biggest lesson is being here and feeling that pressure. I saw it in their eyes and heard some chatter from players being nervous and having butterflies, and I was like ‘it’s going to happen, it’s a big stage, but it’s the same game we played all year,’” Taylor said. “I think that experience got them there at the end of that game”

LADY TIGERS RETURNING TO STATE FINALS

GLEN BURNIE - Rising Sun dominated at the plate and from the circle from the outset of their MPSSAA 2A State Semifinal matchup against Century High School. Lady Tiger junior ace Cadence Williams kept the bats on the shoulders of the Knights, striking out the side to open the game, and Jordan Lynch drove in all the runs the her team would need with a home run in the bottom of the inning. Rising Sun took the momentum of the opening frame and rode it to an 8-0 win and a return trip to College Park for a chance at a state title. Rising Sun set the tone of the game in the first inning. Williams walked the first batter on a full count. The next two batters Williams would strike out swinging before walking Catcher Emma Zuckerman batting fourth in the Knights lineup. The courtesy runner sent in for the catcher would quickly realize that you have to watch out for the arm of Rising Sun Catcher Bri Cole as Cole picked off the runner at first ending the inning. The Lady Tigers jumped out to an early lead when Jordan Lynch, batting

second in the order, hit a homerun scoring Sam Dixon who had just singled on a line drive to left field. Two batters into the lineup and Rising Sun was already on top 2-0. Faith McCullough would ground out before Knights’ Pitcher Hannah Zabik could strike out two and get out of the inning. Williams would get the Tigers bats back to work quickly after retiring the first three Century batters of the second inning with a pop out and two strikeouts. It’s the bottom of the second inning and Century is starting to look like they may be settling in as Zabik strikes out the first two batters. With 2 outs, Rising Sun is now at the bottom of their batting order with Senior Grace Boyd coming to the plate in the ninth spot on the lineup. It would take Zabik five pitches to get to a 2-2 count on Boyd before Boyd hits her second solo homerun of the playoff tournament with a shot to left field. Sam Dixon starts the top of the lineup and pops out to third base to end the inning with Rising Sun ahead 3-0. Williams would re-

tire the next three Knights batters to quickly put the Tigers back at the plate with Jordan Lynch to start off the bottom of the third. Zabik would have her best inning of the game in the third only giving up one hit and striking out two before Williams would pop out in foul territory by first base. This would be the only inning of the game where Rising Sun didn’t add a run to their score. Williams would again move quickly through the Knights lineup to retire the side. After four batters the Tigers were once again at the plate and would have their highest scoring inning of the game in the fourth inning. With one out, Catherine Meadows doubles on a fly ball to center field to get on second base and bring Jayden Simpkins to the plate. After one ball and one strike looking Jayden takes the third pitch and sends it out of the park over centerfield for her first homerun of the year, scoring Meadows from second and giving the Lady Tigers a 5-0 lead. Grace Boyd would get on base with ground ball to centerfield and Sam Dixon

would pop out to centerfield for the second out of the inning. With Boyd on first, Jordan Lynch hits a hard ground ball to centerfielder Maddy Sitarek. An error on the play would advance Lynch to second and score Boyd from third now giving the Lady Tigers a 6-0 lead over the Century Knights. Zabik would get out of the inning when Bri Cole lines out to left field limiting the damage to three runs by the Lady Tigers in the fourth inning. The Knights needed to get things turned around in the fifth but it was not to be as the first three Knights all ground out in the infield. The bottom of the fifth for the Tigers would start out with Faith McCullough getting on base with a single to centerfield. Williams would be walked next moving McCullough to second and Madison Nolan would come in as the courtesy runner for Williams. Abby McBride grounds into a fielders choice and McCullough is out advancing to third with Nolan now on second and McBride at first. Catherine Meadows hits a ground ball into cen-

terfield scoring Nolan from second. Meadows advances to second and McBride to third on the throw from centerfield. Zabik strikes out two to end the inning but Rising Sun has added one this inning to make the score now 7-0. The Century Knights are finally able to get a runner on base in the sixth inning. With two outs, Aly Loschen and Zabik are both able to get singles to get on base. Loschen on second and Zabik on first, Zuckerman strikes out swinging after walking twice earlier in the game. The inning ends with runners stranded on base. Bottom of the sixth and the Tigers are up 7-0. The Tigers supporters are excited as Sam Dixon gets on base with a ground ball to left field followed by Lynch getting on base after hitting a ground ball and an error at first base. The error moves Lynch to second and Dixon to third as Bri Cole comes to the plate. Cole is walked to load the bases bringing up McCullough with the bases loaded and no outs. McCullough hits a sacrifice fly to left field scor-

Williams singles on a fly ball to right field and once again the bases are loaded with 1 out as McBride comes to the plate. Zabik is able to escape the inning with a strike out on McBride and Meadows grounds out to Zabik ending the inning with the bases loaded. The Knights go into the top of the seventh with the daunting task of needing to make up 8 runs to keep their season going. The Knights get a runner on first because of an error on a ground ball to second but it won’t be enough as Williams still has enough gas in the tank to strike out the next three batters and crush the dreams of the Knights championship run. Williams pitched the entire game for the Tigers, allowing zero runs on two hits and striking out 11. Hannah Zabik was in the cirlce for the Knights. Zabik lasted six innings, al-

CecilCountySportsWeekly.com lowing 13 hits and eight runs while striking out ten. The Lady Tigers are now on the way to the Championship Game for the first time since winning the title in 2003. Rising Sun was won the State Championship in 1983, 1984, 1997, 1998, 2000 and 2003. Sophomore Jordan Lynch will have her first chance at a Championship Ring this Friday Night in College Park. Jordan’s mother Renie (Mitchell) Lynch was a Senior and a member of the Rising Sun Championship Team in 1997. The pitcher for that ’97 Rising Sun Tigers Championship Team was Susan (Dugan) Penta. We all call her Coach Penta now as she is currently coaching at Bohemia Manor High School. She is the Mother of 3x State Champion and current Auburn Pitcher, Maddie Penta. Her daughter Mariah currently plays for the High School Team.

CECIL ATHLETES COMPETE

AT MPSSAA 1A & 2A

STATE TRACK & FIELD FINALS By Amanda Callaghan and Katie Callaghan On May 26th and 28th, standout athletes from across the state of Maryland gathered to compete in the MPSSAA 1A/2A State Track Championships. The meet was held at the beautiful PG Sports Learning Complex, in the shadow of FedEx Field, the home of the Washington Commanders. The meet was held over two days, with events split up on different days. 49 1A and 49 2A teams competed at the meet, including Bo Manor and Perryville in 1A, and Rising Sun, Elkton, and North East in 2A. Initially, the 3A and 4A teams were supposed to have Day 1 on Friday, May 27th, but harsh weather conditions canceled the meet. Because of this, Day 1 events for 3A and 4A had to be held in the morning on Saturday, and so their Day 2 events were pushed to the same time as the 1A and 2A Day 2 events. This created an electric atmosphere and lots of socializing between schools that hadn’t had the chance to meet each other before. Cecil County schools

sent many athletes to the MPSSAA State Track meet. Many had amazing days, claiming school records and personal records (PRs) all throughout the meet. 15 Cecil athletes competed in the boys 2A meet, and for 2A girls, 19 athletes competed. For 1A, 19 Cecil boys competed, and 13 girls competed. From Bo Manor, Noah Beck, Day Leone, Samuel Dickerson, Jordan Brinkley, Saheed Council, Jake Koehler, Dennis Kemether, and Angel Granado represented the boy's team. Maya Osborne, Kathryn Scott, Skylar Pizzulli, Abigail Barker, Rylee Lenz, Margaret McGlothlin, Hannah Beck, and Briana Poullard represented the Bo Manor girl’s team. Ty Stiffler, Sydney Phillips, Gabe Phillips, Tayvin Griffin, Jaimere Guy, Brady Martin, Hasani Baynes, Cooper Meekins, Logan Shaw, Cameron Malone, and Connor Racine were representative athletes for the Perryville boys team. For the Perryville girls team, athletes included Anna Rando, Sophia Salvatore, Savannah Bennett, Hayden O'Brien, and Lilyana Heuis-

ler.

Elkton representatives included Chase Bean, Torien Newton, Isaiah Huffstutler, Douglas McGonigle, Hugean Greer, Brandon Turner, Allan Tate, and Jaden Nichols for the boy's team, and Sage North, Lily Miller, Sytieia Brown, MyAven Ewing, Gyselle Lopez, and Jada Obegi for the girl's team. North East girls' athletes included Brin Khanjar and Leanna Rogers, their boys’ athletes included Corey O'Connell, Manny Rose, Daniel Katz, Aidan McCullough, James Paylor, and Patrick Smith. From Rising Sun, Carl Williams-Cohen competed for the boys, and girls athletes included Katie Callaghan, Amanda Callaghan, Madi Cleary, Caroline Mercer, Carly McCardell, Laynee Eyman, Alyssa McCall, Katelyn Lacey, Savannah Lacey, and Sophia Amoretti. Throughout the course of the meet, many Cecil County athletes earned a place in the top 8 for their events. Cecil's teams took home 11 medals and 26 ribbons. For the 1A Boys meet, Day Leone of Bo Man-

or finished off his senior season by earning second in the 3200 and third in the 1600. He earned a PR of 4:30.26 in the 1600 and a PR of 9:43.71 in the 3200. In the 1600 Day was followed by his teammate Samuel Dickerson, another senior, earning eighth. Junior Ty Stiffler of Perryville earned sixth in the 110 hurdles, setting a PR of 16.51. Bo Manor’s 4x400 of Day Leone, Saheed Council, Angel Granado, and Jake Koehler finished seventh with another PR of 3:37.15. Elkton’s 4x100 of Sytieia Brown, MyAven Ewing, Gyselle Lopez, and Sage North also ran strongly, running a 52.21. Rising Sun’s 4x400 relay of Alyssa McCall, Katie Callaghan, Katelyn Lacey, and Amanda Callaghan rose up from the slow heat to win the heat and earn sixth overall with another school record of 4:13.63. Rising Sun’s

Tuesday, May 31, 2022 4x800 of Katie Callaghan, Savannah Lacey, Katelyn Lacey, and Amanda Callaghan won second, running a 9:58.16 to break 10:00 which is a monumental event for a girl’s 4x800 team since the average split is below a 2:30. Jada Obagi, an Elkton senior, earned fourth in the shotput. Three Cecil girls made it into the finals of Discus, with sophomore Caroline Mercer of Rising Sun earning second, sophomore Sophia Amoretti of Rising Sun earning sixth, and senior Jada Obegi of Elkton earning eighth. Junior Brin Khanjar of North East earned sixth in the high jump. The meet wrapped up the track season for all Cecil athletes. They all performed spectacularly and ended what has been an

CecilCountySportsWeekly.com extremely successful track season for Cecil County! All teams showed monumental improvement since the beginning of the season which has been amazing for athletes’ performances and has been an absolute thrill to watch. The incredible athletes and coaches created a memorable track season that will be remembered for years to come, also ending the 2021-2022 school year

on a high note. We wish the best of luck to the seniors in their upcoming endeavors! Looking to next year, Cecil's cross country and track and field programs are looking young and strong. It’s going to be amazing to see what the 2022-2023 cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track seasons will entail. Track and cross country fans, see you next year!

We are so proud of the young man you have grown into! Being able to watch you grow up playing a sport that you love so much brings us great joy. Watching you in the beginning at 4 years old playing wiffle ball to pitching your last game as a Perryville Panther. You have never failed to impress us on and off the baseball field. We know that you will continue to challenge yourself and chase your dreams on the baseball field. We will always be there to support you and cheer you on!

Love you, Mom & Dad

Ryan, It has been a pleasure watching you develop in Lacrosse and into a young man. I hope you cherish ALL of the memories. You should be grateful for all the coaches, and friends you have come to know through the years. This is it. No more sounds of me hollering or screaming at you on the field, no more late night dinners, and no more long drives. I will, however, be cheering you on in the next chapter. What a ride! Time for you to fly.

Ryan Krankowski #5

Always love, Mom and Dad

Carson, We are proud to call you our son. Your Dad and I have loved watching you “enjoy” playing lacrosse. You’ve been a goalie and a defender, both positions have helped you grow in the game as a team player. Your Dad and I have been cheering you on since you started and we can’t wait to watch you enjoy these next few years of “young adult life.” You’ve grown from our Bugsy boy to my lil’Vern to my favorite Carson EVER! Praying you carry compassion, kindness, and Jesus in your everyday life to all you meet.

Carson Omasta #1

Love Mom and Tim

Brody, to say I’m proud of you is an understatement. You have worked hard both on and off the field, including the ice rink. I wish you all the best after graduation. No more embarrassing you at the games.

Brody Smithers #24

Love always Mom and Dad

Hunter we are so proud of you and all you have done as a team leader this year. Your dedication to constantly working hard in school and in the goal has brought great rewards all around. We have loved every minute of your 14 years of lacrosse from shorts below your knees, sticks of all sizes, broken bones, bruises, and endless stinky gloves to tall, long legs and arms, awesome saves, and cheering you on to great wins and even a few heart breakers. You wouldn’t have it any other way. Lax parents never give up or shut up, we step up and cheer you on to an amazing future. Go out there and do great things Hunter-man.

Hunter Kennedy #8

Love Mom and Ryan

We are so proud of you and all you have accomplished. Your hard work and dedication is inspiring. We look forward to watching your next chapter in life but for now enjoy your Senior Year!

Dylan Ballas #9

Love, Dad, Mom, and Garrett

It’s hard to believe that you’re a senior, ready to go off to college. What they say is true, don’t blink, because the time we have had with you has flown by. We have watched you grow into an amazing young man. You are funny, strong, smart, a hard worker, a leader, a teammate, a friend, a grandson, a brother, and our pride and joy. We love you so much and cannot wait to see what life has waiting for you.
