Indians work together to put up big lead over Titans

NORTH EAST - Unselfish

play helped the North East Indians build an early double digit lead on the way to defeating the Tome School Titans 60-31 at home Tuesday night.

In the middle of a streaky season with several winning and losing streaks, North East coach Seth Grimes highlighted how working on team play is starting to pay off.

“Our word for the team is coexist. We want everybody

to just share the ball and we want to move the ball and get everybody shots,” says Grimes, “ I really liked the way we shared the ball on offense. I thought we were moving the ball much better against the zone. I thought we were unselfish as a team.”

Team play led to multiple scorers in double digits for the Indians. Jabez Griffin and James Traynham both drained 14 points to lead all scorers. Luke Keefer added 12.

“Traynham had a great

day. He was big inside for us today. Jabez did a good job running the play for us and so did Luke,” added Grimes, “But I really liked our two minutes we got from Sean [Holland] #20 it’s his first year in the system and he's getting a lot better for us and he had a couple three's later in the game you can just see he’s getting better and better every week.”

Herald Beljour led the Titans with 13. Sam Booth and Spencer Cain each added six.

Panthers defeat Indians 49-39

NORTH EAST - The North East Indians hosted the Perryville Panthers in Thursdays game, a rematch between the two teams after playing just 8 days ago in the Cecil College Green And Gold Tournament. North East pressured the Panthers with a 1-3-1 half court press nearly the whole game. This press forced a lot of perimeter work for the Panthers, who had a hard time getting the ball inside. On the other

hand, North East was able to breakdown Perryville’s half court 2-3 defense, obtaining most of their points from inside the paint.

By the end of the first half, the Panthers adjusted their defense to help prevent paint points, and even took a 17-16 lead going into the locker room at halftime.

Entering the second half, North East came out strong. They worked both sides of the ball well, resulting in a 5 point lead halfway through the third quarter, regaining

confidence. But Perryville did not get discouraged; they adapted to the Indians’ press, leading to 2 shots beyond the arch by Alyssa Stanley to catch up in the final minutes of the quarter. Stanley had a game high of 23 points.

With North East winning by just 1 point in the final period of the game, both teams played aggressive. It became a game of free throws, as both teams ended up in foul trouble. With about 4 minutes remaining,

Perryville went on a run.

Contributions from Stanley, Lily, and White, the Panthers were winning 39-33 with just a few minutes left in the game. Indians Saylor Bare and Tess Keatley both sunk shots in the final minutes, but it was not enough to outweigh the Panther’s final free throws. Perryville’s Mallory Stamper hit 5 of 6 of her foul shots in the last 90 seconds, securing a 10-point win over North East, 49-39.

SATURDAY NIGHT TURF WARS AT CECIL ARENA

Fall Sports may have been over for a while, student athletes from Cecil County have been putting in work, refining their skills, having some fun and engaging in some healthy competition. While other high schoolers may have been off at the movies or buried in their bedrooms scrolling through Tik Tok and Snapchat, kids from Perryville and Tome School were battling it out on the turf at Cecil Arena close to 11pm Saturday night for bragging rights in winter indoor soccer. The lively, although friendly, fight ended with a 4-3 win for the kids from Perryville.
