Perryville Junior Zack Clarke had an awesome performance in the Annual Susky Bowl this week against a Havre de Grace Team that only has one loss on their record due to a forfeit for Covid protocols.

Karina Serio is without question the top high school female golfer in Cecil County and has only been playing for two years.

As Kicker Zack went 3 for 3 on PATs but it was his role this week at Quarterback that will be most remembered. Zack had 110 Yards of Total Offense and rushed for 2 TDs. In Overtime Zack had a passing TD while scrambling to Zach Ayers deep in the endzone that put Perryville in the lead 21-14. Zack also has one interception in OT which clinched the win for Perryville and brought the Susky Bowl Trophy back to Perryville.

Karina is a Sophomore at the Tome School and this past week was low girl with a 95 score in the County Championships at Back Creek Golf Club and 6th overall in the competition. Karina has been low girl in every match she played this year, won a Philly Junior Tour stop this fall, and won her second consecutive Chesapeake Bay Golf Club Girl’s Championship this summer.

SUSKY BOWL CHAMPIONS!

PHOTOS BY WAYNE LAMBERT

By Sam Dixon The Perryville Panthers traveled this week to Havre de Grace with a 3-4 Record to face a 6-1 Warriors Team. Each team had to forfeit two weeks ago due to covid protocols so the Warriors had not been defeated on the field all season. This game is known as the Susquehanna Bowl and the winner of this game has possession of the Susquehanna Bowl Trophy for the year. The last time these two teams played each

other was in 2019 when the Panthers won 7-6. In 2019 the Warriors would finish the year 2-8 but this year the Warriors were thought to be the favorite as they have been unstoppable all season. Panthers junior quarterback Zack Clarke had an outstanding game rushing for two touchdowns, one passing touchdown in OT and he kicked three extra-points. The Warriors were first to get on the scoreboard late in the first quarter but

Perryville came back quickly to tie up the game when Zack Clarke rushed in for his first touchdown of the night. The Panthers Defense would keep the Warriors from scoring again in the first half. Tied 7-7 both teams came out from halftime looking to get something going on offense. The Warriors would be first to score but Perryville would once again come back in their next possession to keep the scored tied 14-14 as they went into the fourth quarter.

With neither team able to score in the fourth quarter the game went into overtime. From the 17 yard line the Panthers were looking to get into the endzone and a bobbled snap by Clarke looked like disaster but he quickly scrambled to his left and under pressure, threw deep to the endzone where Zach Ayers was able to make the catchgiving the Panthers a 21-14 lead. The Warriors hopes to comeback were quickly doused when Zack Clarke

intercepted a pass from the Warriors QB and sealed the win for Perryville. There was much celebration on the field from the Perryville Team and their fans. The Susky Bowl Trophy returns back to Perryville until next year. Panthers RB Jaimere Guy finished the night with 16 carries for 114 yards. QB Zack Clarke recorded 110 yards of total offense with two rushing TDs, one passing TD, three extra pints kicked and the game clinching interception.

INDIANS RALLY TO BEAT HUSKIES 14-13

NORTH EAST WINS HOMECOMING GAME TO GET FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON PHOTOS BY NATALIE GOLDSMITH

By Natalie Goldsmith The North East Indians celebrated this week as the Football Team recorded it’s first win of the season with a 14-13 Homecoming Victory over the Patterson Mill Huskies. The Huskies would get on the board first with a rushing TD in the First Quarter. The Huskies missed the PAT and led the game 6-0 with 8 minutes remaining in the First Quarter.

North East and Patterson Mill would both turn over possession on downs and the First Quarter ended 6-0. The Indians would get back into the endzone for the first time since Oct 1 when Senior Running Back Joe Funk rushed for a Touchdown with 3 miutes to go in the First Half. The PAT by Senior Andrew Kosinski was good and the Indians had the lead 7-6. Patterson Mill would

’s r e v Dri ation c u d E 0 0 . 9 $29

come back to score a TD before halftime to take the lead 13-7. The game changing play of the evening came from Senior Andrew Kosinski when he intercepted the ball 6 minutes into the 3rd Quarter and ran it back for a TD getting the Indians back to a 13-13 tie score. Kosinski is also the kicker and would make the extra point giving the Indians the lead once again at 14-13. The Defense now

fired up, and hungry for a win, would hold back the Huskies through the 4th Quarter and get the Indians their first win of the season in front of an excited and cheering Homecoming Crowd. Running Back Joe Funk led the Indians with 21 carries on the night averaging over 7 yards per carry for a total of 153 yards and a Touchdown. Raheam Hart had 8 carries on the night for 42 yards. On the Defense side

of the ball Joe Funk had 13 tackles, 5 TFL, and a sack. Andrew Kosinski had an interception for a TD and made both PATs. Neel Kearns had 11 tackles with 4 TFL and a Sack playing Defense. Will Haase recorded 2 sacks on the evening. The Indians are now 1-7 with their final game of the regular season coming up this week against a struggling 2-6 Rising Sun Team that is also coming off a win this week.

RISING SUN TIGERS FOOTBALL

Tuesday, October 26, 2021

RUSSELL LEADS TIGERS TO BIG WIN PHOTOS BY NATALIE GOLDSMITH

By Kevin Phillips

CALVERT--Rising Sun rushed for 296 yards as it successfully used its Wing-T offense to control the game in its UCBAC Susquehanna Division football contest against visiting Joppatowne Thursday night. The Tigers had four players rush for at least 50 yards with quarterback Gannon Russell leading the way with 67 yards and three touchdowns as they earned a 41-20 victory over the Mariners. “We’ve been working on the guys executing all of the time, and finally we were able to execute and block properly and play a

lot better in the last couple of weeks,” Rising Sun head coach Clem Vaughan said. After Joppatowne opened the scoring with a 70yard touchdown pass from Robert Martin to Zachariah Horton, the Tigers responded with a steady touchdown march that covered 50 yards on nine plays, culminating in Russell’s first score of the game on a nine-yard run to give Rising Sun a lead it never relinquished. The Tiger defense recovered a fumble on the first play of the Mariners’ ensuing possession, and just eight plays later, Russell pushed his way into the endzone for a one-yard score to give Rising Sun a 13-7 lead

with 9:00 left in the second quarter. Russell scored this third touchdown of the game midway through the third quarter with a 41-yard run that gave the Tigers a 19-6 lead, and Russell says it was a combination of a strong effort from the offensive line and constant practice is a reason for Rising Sun’s strong running game. “They were good. We just practice it all week. It’s the same plays over and over, and we kind of know what we are doing and give it our all,” Russell said. Running back Colin Bell took on the scoring load for the Tigers with touchdown runs of 14 and 3 yards

in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach 34-6 with 5:25 left in the game. Rising Sun has scored at least 30 points the past two week, and Russell said that his legs have helped the Tiger offense add a new wrinkle for the defense to worry about. “We put in new plays and started to run me some more, and that throws the defense off when you have to worry about a quarterback rolling out,” Russell said. Rising Sun’s final touchdown of the game came when Eddie Marsilli snatched the ball from the quarterback’s grasp for a short fumble return touchdown.

The Tigers ran 59 plays on offense compared to Joppatowne’s 24 plays, and that is something Rising Sun wants to do each week on the field. “We possess the ball and want to keep it. We want to churn, churn, churn. We’re not going to break long ones. We did some tonight, but we’re looking to get 5, 6, 7 yards a pop, and just keeping the ball,” Vaughan said. In addition to Russell’s total, the Tigers got 67 yards from Sam Erhart, 53 from Bell, and 51 from Mason Testerman. Martin had a strong day for the Mariners as he threw for two touchdowns and rushed for another.

RISING SUN WINS THE COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS By Andrew Barbin

PHOTOS BY JON DURR

After a few hard weeks of waiting for a rematch, Rising Sun got their revenge over North East and Perryville and dominated their way to winning the County Championships at Back Creek Golf Club. The Tigers were once again led by Ben Adams, whose 85 was the second best score of the field. Finishing not too far behind was Tyler Hogue, whose 91 was the third best score of the tournament. Bradley Dietz, who has been a paradigm of consistency for the Tigers this season, scored the fourth best score of the contest with a 92. With three of the top four scores already, Rising Sun’s deep team was not done yet. A 97 from Zane Montgomery, a 98 from Tim Dobrowlski, and a 109 from Jake Eckman gave the Tigers a 572 total. 5 scores under 100 were instrumental in Rising Sun’s victory, a surprisingly young team with a bright future for years to come. Perryville took second place unsurprisingly, with another solid showing. They were paced by Ronnie Kidd’s 95 and matching 96s from Jared Eldreth and Nick Lepore. The other counting scores were Lucas Umburger’s 100, Andrew Kidd’s 101, and Jacob Tabor’s 116 for a final score of 604. North East, who won the District Championship, could not repeat their magical run at Furnace Bay. Noah Wallace, as most would have expected, took medalist for the

contest with a solid score of 78 despite some putting woes. Brandon Kristovich and Lance Richardson could not get anything going, and their scores could not break triple digits with a 100 and 104 respectively. Ethan Moyers also shot a 104, and District hero Reece Swartout shot a 116. Alex Browne concluded the scoring table with a 121 for a 623 total. The other teams in the county such as Bo Manor, Tome, and Elkton did not have enough golfers to qualify for the six-scoring requirement, but there were some notable finishes. Bo Manor’s Jake Vaughn shot the fifth best score of the tournament with a 94 and Tome’s Karina Serio was low girl with a 95. With most of the golfers playing returning, it will be exciting to see how these young players progress over the summertime. Will Rising Sun’s deep team continue to flourish, or will Perryville with their own depth rise up to the challenge? Will North East be able to develop golfers around the best golfer in the county, Noah Wallace? Will the other teams see the surge in golf popularity and become contenders for next year? Coming up next: follow Noah Wallace as he attempts to become Cecil County’s first high school state champion on Monday and Tuesday at University of Maryland Golf Course!

DOUG PHILLIPS WINS GOLFWEEK AMATEUR TOUR NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP By Andrew Barbin

Winning is not easy in golf. It is hard enough to battle the course and it’s elements in competitive play, and then to come up on top over a field of other talented players is another level of difficulty. North East resident and Chesapeake Bay Golf Club member Doug Phillips did not just win a golf a tournament this past week – he won the National Championship over 223 golfers from all over the country in the biggest and oldest amateur golf tour in the world. Phillips’ golf journey is still fairly young. He was a longtime softball player who got the golf bug only two years ago, like many 25-40 year old golfers have in the COVID era. After finding success locally, winning Chesapeake Bay Golf Club’s winter simulator league with golfing buddy Brian Kilgore, Phillips set a few goals for the 2021 season. He wanted to compete in every tournament and league he could play in, he wanted to lower his USGA handicap to single digits, and he wanted to break 80 for 18 holes. To achieve these goals, Phillips dedicated most of his free time to honing his craft, whether it was hours on the practice green or range or

strategizing before each round – Doug was dedicated to his rapid improvement. He would frequently work with Chesapeake’s head golf professional Andrew Barbin Jr, and also got a lesson with PGA Tour instructor and famed biomechanical engineer Dr. Robert Neal when he was in town, ensuring that he was working on the right things. Phillips shattered these goals one after the other and started setting new goals. The golf tour he joined was the Philadelphia section’s GolfWeek Amateur Tour, which treats amateur golfers of all skill levels as pros. Phillips new goal was to be Philadelphia’s Player of the Year and compete in the National Championship in Hilton Head. After a few local wins and a high placement finish in every event Doug played in, he achieved yet another goal in becoming Philadelphia’s C-Flight Player of the Year. It was time for Phillips to set his sights on Hilton Head and on achieving a goal he wouldn’t have dreamt of when the year started. Despite rough and windy conditions, Phillip’s first round score of 86 placed him 7 shots off the lead and in 12th place. After another tough second round, Phillips fired another 86 to place

him only one shot off the lead behind North Carolinas Eric Herman and New York’s Danny Jimenez. The third round was arguably the hardest round, going back to Oyster Reef Golf Club and it’s 30mph gusts. Phillips started off with a few mistakes costing him a few early double bogeys, but he pulled himself together and went on a tear, making birdies on the 9th and 11th holes to bring him back to only 2 shots off the leader Danny Jimenez. After trading some clutch pars and some untimely bogeys, Phillips and Jimenez were tied through regulation play. After trading bogeys on the first playoff hole, Phillips had the opening he needed. Jimenez, who teed off first, pulled his tee shot out-of-bounds. Phillips put the driver back in the bag and pulled out a 5-iron, and his smart play led him to a short putt for the win. After draining the 3 footer, Doug Phillips of North East, Maryland was the National Champion. His wife Dena and daughter Isa ran onto the green to celebrate. While Doug is back in town, and still in a state of euphoria, he has stated that he has plenty of new goals for 2022. After all, he’s just getting started!

Evan Barbin wins Baltimore Junior Golf Open by 9 Strokes

The Buckeye Junior Golf Tour, based out of Ohio, is one of the fastest growing junior golf tours in the Mid-Atlantic. They travel from Ohio to Pennsylvania to West Virginia as well as Maryland. Their most recent stop was over this past

weekend at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club for their second annual Baltimore Junior Golf Open. And for many junior golfers, it can be hard to balance a social life with a rigorous tournament schedule. For Elkton golfer and Red

Lion senior Evan Barbin, he won Homecoming King honors on Friday night, shot a 73 on Saturday morning, went to the homecoming dance, and then fired a very sleepy 78 in blustery conditions to lap the rest of the field by 9 strokes. While not

a great showing by his standards, this win gave him JGS points, which ultimately boosts his junior rankings. Other local golfers playing were North Harford’s Zach Wilcox, who is the second-best golfer in District 7 behind Noah

Wallace and finished third in the contest. Other District 7 golfers were Maxwell Houck, Mac Arida, Brandon Palen, Noah Segui, and Luke Cimino.
