Eagles Travel To Patterson Mill For Tough Game Against Huskies The Bohemia Manor Eagles traveled this week to Patterson Mill for their second game of the season coming off a successful 4319 outing against the Kent County Trojans last week. The Eagles looked like they might continue the previous weeks pace and jumped out to an early lead going up 8-0 in the opening drive on a touchdown run by Jake Koehler. Patterson Mill Defense would prove to be a much more worthy adversary keeping the Eagles from scoring again until much later in the game. Bohemia Manor stayed within striking distance much of the game but in the end had to take their first loss of the season with a

score of final score 16-28. Quarterback Rob Siek went 7-15 for 86 yards passing and 28 yards rushing on 8 carries and a Rushing TD. Jake Koehler led the team in rushing with 70 yards and TD on 14 carries. Koehler had 3 catches for 19 yards. Caleb Cerminaro had 2 catches for 48 yards. The Eagles totaled 104 yards on the ground for the week and 86 yards total receiving. This week the Eagles have their Home Opener at Bohemia Manor High School when they host the Havre De Grace Warriors (2-0) who have proven to be a very strong defensive unit only allowing 6 points in their first two games.

Defeats Edgewood in Elkton Home Opener 22-16

The Golden Elks improved to 2-0 this past Friday after a hard fought game with the visiting Edgewood Rams. After falling behind 8-0 early, the Golden Elks found their rhythm on offense. Jayden Triplett accounted for 2 touchdowns on the night, running one in and throwing one to Kyrie Tyson for the go-ahead score and they never trailed again. Ian Brown also scored a rushing touchdown. Defensively, the difference was the Elks winning the takeaway battle with Amir Bolton securing an interception and Brian Pearson recovering his forced fumble. Ian Brown, Jaden Nichols, Doug McGonigle, Brian Pearson, Jaiden Hicks and Jamere Hunter all had double digit tackles for Elkton. The Elks host Aberdeen this Friday.

Panthers Dominate Mariners For First Win Of The Season Perryville Offensive and Defensive Units make strong showing on the road.

By Shawn Huth

Coming off of a loss a week prior, Perryville looked to start their winning ways against a Joppatowne team that blew out Loch Raven for their first game. On a beautiful Friday night, Perryvillle received the ball from a Joppatowne kickoff. Following a solid drive, Perryville was the first on the scoreboard after a 31 yard field goal. Joppatowne had no answer for the Perryville defense, being shut down all game. Perryville’s pass defense looked spectacular and their pass rush was generating a ton of pressure, while the run defense was

looking shaky. Joppatowne ran effectively when they decided to, but rarely did since they were so far behind. For the whole game Perryville’s offense looked fantastic. Their second drive was perfect, Jayden Griffin was throwing great passes, and Daniel Tserkis capped it off with an amazing catch over the Joppatowne defender for a touchdown. The extra point was missed and the rest of the half was slow. Both teams had a couple punts and some good defensive plays, and then came Perryville’s last play as the clock was winding down. What looked like a play action into a screen

turned into a wheel route from Jaimere Guy streaking down the field. With a great throw from Jayden Griffin, Joppatowne’s defense was no match for this brilliant play-call from Coach Sandora. The extra point was made and Perryville was up 16-0 at halftime. The second half started with Joppatowne starting on offense and they still were not able to produce anything. Perryville got the ball back, and drove down the field with strong rushes and solid passes. Jayden Griffin delivered an absolutely beautiful pass to Daniel Tserkis for his second touchdown of the game to

complete the drive. The extra point was drilled by Zack Clarke and the score was 23-0. The game was slow for both offenses for the rest of it. Perryville did score one more time though on a fumble recovery. CJ Bowling made an intelligent play; after he recovered the fumble, he handed it back to Zack Clarke who has lightning speed and returned it all the way to the end zone for a huge touchdown. After he scored the touchdown he drilled another extra point making the score 30-0. Joppatowne ended the game early by forfeiting, and Perryville were victors. Perryville

won this game by having a dominating defense and a consistently good offense that passed and ran the ball effectively. This is the second week in a row that Perryville’s defense looked good enough to compete with anyone. Joppatowne will continue their season next week with a home game against North East Highschool who is 0-2. Moving to 1-1, Perryville will be hosting a great Fallston team who just defeated North East High School. Perryville will look to start a winning streak in their first home game of the season.

By Megan Steimer Tri-State Christian Academy and Rising Sun High School put on quite a show for those in attendance at Thursday night’s volleyball match. The atmosphere was electrifying, the crowd almost deafening at times and two talented programs were hungry for a victory. But there could only be one winner and the Tri-State Crusaders worked for every bit of it, defeating the Rising Sun Tigers 28-26, 21-25, 30-28, 25-17. Tri-State’s Skylar Klingler, the lone senior for the Crusaders, went on a service run, including backto-back aces, to give her team a 16-10 lead and test Rising Sun’s grit early in the match. The Tigers were able to answer, taking a 2119 lead when Anna Carder stepped up, generating two aces and two kills to put her team in position to win. The underdog Crusaders didn’t go away quietly though, capitalizing on opponent mistakes and taking game one. Set two saw a Rising Sun team eager to come back with a vengeance, obtaining a 9-2 lead over the

Crusaders. “A seven-point lead means nothing in a game like this” a fan noted— they were right. While the score leveled out and remained close, Rising Sun kept momentum on their side with powerful serves that had Tri-State players off balance and unable to make passes to generate plays. With several different players seeing the court, Rising Sun had the energy to stay on top and tie the match at 1-1. Tri-State came out swinging (and serving) in game three, jumping to a 7-2 lead behind Baylie Thomas’ three aces and an Ashlyn Criddle kill. The Tigers found themselves trailing throughout the game and at 23-20, the Crusaders needed a pair of points to close out the set but that’s when things got interesting. Three massive kills by Carder and another by Courtney Mettee put the Tigers ahead 25-24, giving TriState a gut check. The crowd was on their feet— cheering as loud as they could and after five lead changes, the Crusaders were able to clutch a 30-28 win and go up 2-1 in the match. “Being loud and hype when we’re down

just really helps us shake it off and say, we got this,” Thomas stated. With the match on the line, Tri-State played a convincing game four, taking a 9-8 lead and never looking back— defeating Rising Sun 25-17 and securing the upset. Despite the Tigers best efforts, mistakes proved too costly in their home opening loss. Carder finished the night with a match high 14 kills, five aces, seven assists and two blocks while Mette contributed seven kills, seven digs and four aces. Maddie Weil dished out 19 assists for the Tigers while Katelyn Norman-Wilson led the defense with 10 digs. Jules Harris amassed seven kills and two aces for the Crusaders while Thomas and Criddle finished the night with four and six kills respectively. Libero Tessa Davis led the defense with 12 digs followed by Klingler who totaled 9 digs and a block. Reflecting on the match, Davis was proud of her team’s communication and thrilled to get the win, “Rising Sun is a very good team… this was a big win for us tonight.”

North East wins on the road, spoiling Elkton’s Home Opener By Megan Steimer The Elkton High School gymnasium had all the feels of a home opener, one that many have been anticipating since the end of the 2019 season. The match saw several lead changes during its 4 sets, but the North East Indians defeated the Elkton Golden Elks 2513, 23-25, 25-22, 25-15 to secure their first win of the season. It was a tight score early in the first set when the Golden Elks rattled off three straight points starting with a kill from Hanna Workman followed by Emily Bonson’s back-to-back aces. A hitting error would lead to a sideout for the Indians, setting up an impressive service run by Delaney Donaldson which included five aces, eventually leading to a match one win for North East. Elkton’s defense was the talk of game two, demonstrating solid coverage and a never give up attitude. When North East gained a lead, the Elks responded to keep the score close, often tied. Midway through the second set, the

Indians had a three-point lead and momentum on their side, but communication stalled. “We got ourselves in a bit of a rut… you can tell when people start to get quiet, the score stays low” said North East’s Anna Breneman who finished with three aces on the night. Eager for a win and to tie up the match, Elkton battled to keep the ball in play— often picking up on any deep corner ball the Indians dished out. It paid off as the Elk’s won a close game two to tie the match at 1-1. The intensity carried over to the third set as North East hitters were hungry for the ball and a bounce back win while Elkton continued to capitalize on any opportunity that came their way. With Elkton leading 13-11, Indian’s coach Carly Divirgilio called a time out to stop Bonson’s service run and swing the momentum back to their side. Utilizing all three hitters, North East took back the lead and found a rhythm that Elkton couldn’t shake. Jackie Marison ended set three with two of her team high four kills and helped the Indians to a 2-1 match lead. While game four

was close in the beginning, North East pulled away as Megan Harris went on a seven-point service run to end game four and close out the match. Delaney Donaldson led the Indians with five aces and three kills while Shelby Donaldson had four aces, one kill and three assists. For Elkton, Workman had a team high seven kills while Bonson finished with five aces and two kills.

It’s no secret that the membership at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club in Rising Sun boasts some serious talent and has been at the pinnacle of local golf competitions for a long time. On the men’s side, Chesapeake Bay Golf Club at one point last year held every junior and amateur GAP (Golf Association of Philadelphia) trophy with Austin Barbin winning the GAP Junior and the Christman Cup, and Zach Barbin winning the Philadelphia Amateur and the Patterson Cup. Austin and Evan Barbin combined have won three consecutive Delaware High School Boys State Championships, and that’s just a drop in the bucket of the Barbin family’s triumphs at the professional, amateur, collegiate, and junior levels. Other members, such as Jeff Medlar, Nikita Romanov, and Brandon Wilson have also had major success at the amateur and collegiate level as well. Jeff placed top-10 in the Delaware Mid-Amateur last year and had solid showings at other DSGA and MSGA events. Nikita is a standout junior at La Salle and Brandon Wilson leads Dickinson’s golf program as well, both with significant success at the collegiate and local amateur levels. However, the recent domination of the local golf circuit by the men is just a fraction of the accolades the club has earned over the years. The ladies of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club have dominated MSGA and DSGA golf for the better part of three decades – winning several GAP, MSGA, and DSGA team events among several victories individually. Just this year alone, Keven Lawson won the Maryland

State Mixed Doubles Championship with fellow member Pete Petersen, as well as a runner-up finish in her flight at the Delaware Women’s Amateur. Bernie Weed won the second flight of the Amateur championship as well, and both her and Keven won the DWGA Bash to the Beach last year. However, the forefront of Chesapeake Bay Golf Club’s success has always been Arlene Zamora. Zamora has dominated women’s golf in the area since the 90s, winning Chesapeake Bay Golf Club’s Ladies’ Club Championship 12 times among being the ace for every inter-club victory in the GAP, MSGA, and DSGA matches, among several individual victories ranging from the 2003 Maryland Public Links Championship to several Delaware Senior Amateur Championships. But this year, Zamora has gone on an absolute tear that has gone from a career year to something that’s nothing short of historic. The streak started with the DWGA’s Bash to the Beach at Kings Creek Country Club, in which she and fellow CBGC-Member Shelly Pinkerton cruised to a 4-stroke victory in the championship flight – making this the second straight victory for Chesapeake Bay Golf Club (as the aforementioned Bernie Weed and Keven Lawson won in 2020). Two weeks later, Zamora traveled back to the Rehoboth Beach area for the Delaware Senior Amateur at Cripple Creek Golf & Country Club to defend her title. Arlene fought rain and wind to be the only golfer to shoot scores in the 70s, and her matching 78s were good enough for a fourstroke victory. Zamora and Shelly Pinkerton continued to prove

to be an unstoppable duo, as they took first net at the Solheim Cup Tournament at Heritage Shores, giving team Chesapeake 3 out of 3 DWGA Tournaments up to this point. The only tournament remaining was the 69th Women’s Amateur Championship at Rock Manor, a tournament Zamora had not won in her career. But this time, Arlene pulled through with yet another 4-stroke victory over Reagan Garnsey, who had just won the DSGA Delaware Girls’ Junior Amateur. Zamora’s clean sweep of the DWGA is the first time that any golfer won both the Senior Amateur and the Amateur, let alone winning both team events as well. However, while Zamora had completely dominated Delaware, she shifted her focus to the Maryland State Senior Amateur Championship at Oak Creek Golf Club. Arlene got off to a magical start, recording two birdies and a hole-in-one on the 8th hole en route to a 2-under par 34 front 9. She followed her 34 up with a 39 for a first round score of 73 to lead the entire tournament by two-strokes. Unfortunately, her incredible run was hampered by trouble on the 9th and 12th holes and she finished runner up to Breton Bay’s Kimbra Benson. While it seems like Zamora has already accomplished a lifetime’s worth of accolades in a single season, she’s not quite done yet. She still has a few tournaments planned on the schedule, and she still looks to defend her Player of the Year Title at Chesapeake Bay Golf Club, in which she leads in points for yet another season. And if there’s anything that’s guaranteed, it’s that she will be somewhere at the top of the leaderboard!

GOLF TOURNAMENT FOR PERRYVILLE BASEBALL FUNDRAISER

From Ricky Davis Head Baseball Coach Perryville High School

The air was crisp at 6am, the stage was set for a great day of golf as the sun began to rise. Workers started to show up to finish

setting up as we were ready to start our 3rd annual golf tournament fundraiser for Perryville High School Baseball!! The golfers began showing up at 8 and I sat back and stood in amazement at our baseball family

go to work and welcome all our golfers. We began just before 9am with a surreal moment as we removed our caps, bowed our heads, and had a moment of silence for our nation as we remembered all those who lost their lives 20 years to the day of

9/11. The golfers were ready, and we embarked on what became a beautiful day for golf!! I would like to thank each and every one of our sponsors, golfers, and volunteers who supported this great event. I know that

our team greatly appreciates the love and respect from all over the county who supports us.

Rising Sun Varsity Girls 3-0 Over Elkton Field Hockey

Rising Sun came out strong in their first game of the season against county rival, Elkton. Katie Cole started off the Tiger scoring with a goal half-way through the first quarter, assisted by Mackenzie Shephard. Four minutes later, Erin Mahaffey had a beautiful reverse lift into the net, bringing the score to 2-0. Elkton came out very strong in the second half and kept the Tigers from scoring again until the fourth quarter when Hannah Price banged a crossed ball into the cage on a pass from Ashlyn Peirce.

BOYS SOCCER

26

Tuesday, September 14, 2021

North East Defeats County Rival Perryville 2-0 By Kevin Phillips Head coach David Hamilton could not have asked for a better first half from North East in its season-opening UCBAC Susquehanna Division boys’ soccer contest against visiting Perryville Thursday night. The Indians appeared to be in sync with each other for the majority of the first 40 minutes in their 2-0 victory over the Panthers as they consistently moved the ball around the field to control possession. “We’re playing the brand of soccer I like, which is touchmove, touch-move. We’re listening. We’re developing each game,” Hamilton said. “The first game was a good start. We got to keep working as a team.” North East dictated the tempo for the first 20 minutes of the game and pushed the action to the Perryville side of the field, but the Panthers did a good job keeping the score level early on. After Perryville responded with strong play between the 20th and 29th minutes, the Indians launched a counterattack that led to penalty getting called in the 18-yard box, resulting in a penalty kick. Darwin Berger was tabbed to take the kick, and he went low and left for the goal to give North

East a 1-0 lead in the game’s 29th minute, and Berger said he went to his strength when he took the shot. “I was very nervous. The football team was cheering me on, so I felt some pressure, but I picked out my corner. I was confident in it, and I scored,” Berger described what was going through his mind on the penalty kick. “The left side is my stronger side, so I went that way.” The Indians took that lead into halftime, and it did not take long for them to increase their lead in the second half when Corey O’Connell headed a perfectly-placed Nathan Reynolds free kick into the net in the game’s 42nd minute. The Panthers created a pair of promising chances in the second half in an attempt to get on the board but were stymied each time. The first occurred when a shot hit the crossbar in the game’s 61st minute, and the second was a great defensive play near the net by the North East defense late in the game. The Indians held on for the win, and the victory is an ideal way to start the season. “It feels amazing. We played them in a scrimmage and were looking forward to playing them. We beat them 2-0, and it was better than losing,” O’Connell said.

“We’re playing the brand of soccer I like, which is touch-move, touch-move. We’re listening. We’re developing each game,” - Head Coach David Hamilton
