TEXAS RANGERS

BASEBALL WIRE REPORTS

The Texas Rangers aim for their first three-game sweep of the Detroit Tigers in nearly five years, as the two clubs wrap their set tonight in Arlington. The Rangers haven't swept a three-game set from the Tigers since doing so on August 3-5, 2004. They haven't swept Detroit in three games in Texas since May 10-12, 2002. A sweep of the Tigers didn't seem likely earlier this season, as the Rangers carried a sevengame losing streak versus Detroit into this series. However, that skid was ended with Monday's win and Texas made it backto-back victories with Tuesday's 7-3 triumph. Rookie Elvis Andrus had three hits, one a solo homer, scored three runs and drove in two in the victory. He also stole his 20th base of the season, becoming just the 10th player in MLB history to reach that mark before their 21st birthday. Ian Kinsler added three RBI in Texas' seventh win in eight games, but he left Tuesday's contest in the seventh inning because of strained left hamstring. His status for tonight is unknown. With Vicente Padilla missing his second start due to swine flu, Doug Mathis made a four-inning spot-start, while former Tiger Jason Grilli got the win in relief. The victory kept the Rangers within 2 1/2 games of the first-place Angels in the American League West. Standing in Texas' way of a sweep is Detroit's Justin Verlander, who will try to up his league-leading 159 strikeout total and become the American League's second 12game winner in the process this evening. JULY 31- AUG. 6 2009

Just one season removed from 17 losses, Verlander improved to 11-5 with a 3.12 earned run average on Friday. The righty picked up his third win in four starts by holding the White Sox to an unearned run on six hits in a complete- game effort. "That was big, even bigger for myself because [manager Jim Leyland] left me out there," said the 2006 AL Rookie of the Year. "I'm really competitive. I want the ball in that situation. He let me stay out there and thankfully it worked out." Verlander will now try to improve on his 4-5 road mark that also has him sporting a 4.76 ERA. The 26-year-old has dominated the Rangers in seven previous meetings, going 5-1 against them with a 2.13 ERA. He is 10 in two starts versus them this year. Scott Feldman takes the hill for the Rangers just one start after the longest outing of his career. Feldman faced the Royals and Zack Greinke on Friday, and he walked away with his fourth win in five starts by tossing a career-high eight shutout innings. "There was not much room for error, but that didn't change what I was doing, Feldman told Texas' Web site. "This time I was able to keep my pitch count lower and go deeper in the game." Feldman is an impressive 9-3 on the season with a 3.59 ERA and will face Detroit for the first time this year. In six lifetime games versus the Tigers, including one start, the 26-year-old righty holds a 6.43 ERA without a decision. Dusty Ryan stroked a two-run single in last night's loss for the Tigers, who blew a 3-0 lead and have lost three consecutive games after a three-game winning streak. Detroit is two games up on both the White Sox and Twins for first place in the AL Central. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

It is with good reason because training camp is the time for these players to prove themselves in order to earn spots on the team. They will be the most scrutinized people in San Antonio. Last year's draftees know all about the feeling. Felix Jones was the first Dallas pick of the 2008 draft, selected in the first round, 22nd overall. A lot of Cowboys fans were very happy with the selection, while others had their eyes set on Rashard Mendenhall, who was scooped up by the Steelers with the next pick. Jones had to work on getting those Mendenhall supporters on his side. The Cowboys' pick at that spot was looked at as a toss-up. Several mock drafts had Dallas selecting Jones, while some others had Dallas

Mavericks add Tim Thomas and looking to sign Drew Gooden formidable long-range threat and we look forward to him filling that role on our roster."

Gooden had narrowed his final choices to Dallas, Cleveland and Charlotte.

Orlando after being selected by the Grizzlies with the fourth overall pick.

The Dallas Mavericks have struck a deal with unrestricted free agent Drew Gooden to make use of some of the money they got back when Orlando matched their offer sheet earlier this month to restricted free agent Marcin Gortat.

Despite leg and abdominal injuries that cost him 31 games last season, Gooden was highly coveted in February after negotiating a buyout with the Sacramento Kings and wound up signing with the San Antonio Spurs. It's believed that he'll get a shot at starting at center for the Mavericks ahead of Erick Dampier, after that spot had been earmarked for Gortat with a five-year, $34 million offer sheet early in free agency.

Yet he's just 27 and has the ability -- when his focus is there -- to provide a low-post scoring option that Dallas has lacked, whether he starts or comes off the bench. Finishing games is hardly assured, as Dallas is apt to close with a small-ball lineup of Jason Kidd, Jason Terry, Josh Howard, Shawn Marion and Dirk Nowitzki to maximize its offensive firepower. But Gooden should have ample opportunity to supplant Dampier, who is entering what is widely considered to be his final season in Dallas.

Gooden announced via his Twitter feed shortly past midnight Saturday that he is signing with the Mavericks. "Dallas here I come," he wrote. In response, Mavericks owner Mark Cuban tweeted: "Welcome Drew." Although he hasn’t signed yet sources with knowledge of the deal told ESPN.com that Gooden is receiving a oneyear contract worth a guaranteed $4.5 million with incentives that will likely take it beyond $5 million by season's end. A formal announcement of the signing is expected Monday or Tuesday.

Although he had a minimal impact in San Antonio's first-round loss to Dallas -- averaging 7.3 points and 3.8 rebounds in 17.8 minutes -- Gooden fared better in 19 regular-season games with the Spurs, averaging 9.8 points and 4.4 rebounds in just 16.8 minutes per game. He posted a double-double (12 points and 13 rebounds) in his only game with the Kings after arriving with Andres Nocioni in Sacramento as part of the deal that sent Brad Miller and John Salmons to the Bulls.

Gooden had previously announced via Twitter on Friday that he would be "making my decision tomorrow on which team I will be playing for." Sources said that

The Mavericks will be Gooden's seventh team in eight seasons of a career that has been unsettled since his rookie season, when he was dealt from Memphis to

Gooden will be asked to fill the void created by the departure of face-up forward Brandon Bass, who signed a four-year deal with Orlando worth $16 million while the Mavericks' money was tied up in their offer sheet to Gortat. Taking the full seven days allowed by league rules, Orlando stunned many league observers by deciding to match on Gortat -- given that Dwight Howard's backup will essentially be a $12 million player next season when the luxury-tax costs are factored in -after signing Bass. Gooden would be the Mavericks' second prominent newcomer this season following its recent trade acquisition of Shawn Marion. Dallas awarded a five-year deal worth nearly $40 million to Marion in a sign-andtrade arrangement featuring three other teams and also re-signed point guard Jason Kidd to a three-year deal worth $25 million.

Top 10 Clutch Quarterbacks of all time No. 10 Terry Bradshaw Steelers (1970-1983) The last spot on this list came down to Bradshaw and Roger Staubach, with the Steelers Hall of Famer getting the edge because of his four Super Bowl rings. Like many of the quarterbacks on this list, Bradshaw had a unique ability to keep his cool late in the game, and it rubbed off on his teammates as the Steelers dominated the 1970s.

No. 9 Troy Aikman Cowboys (1989-2000) The 1990s Cowboys were loaded with talent, but when a big game was on the line, they always turned to Aikman to bring home the victory. Aikman's statistics in big playoff games are incredible, beginning with his brilliant performance in the 1992 NFC Championship Game, in which the Cowboys beat the 49ers and became the conference's powerhouse.

No. 8 Dan Marino Dolphins (1983-1999) Marino never won a Super Bowl but has the second-most fourthquarter comebacks in NFL history (37) and was at his best in the final two minutes of a game. His fake-spike and subsequent touchdown pass to Mark Ingram that beat the Jets in 1994 is one of the coolest plays ever by a quarterback. Dolphins coach Don Shula said he knew they were never out of a game with Marino at quarterback, and opponents hated seeing Number 13 over center when the clock was running down. No. 7 Joe Namath Jets, Rams (1965-1977) Namath's guarantee that the Jets would win Super Bowl III over heavily favored Baltimore is all you need to know. Broadway Joe delivered a 16-7 victory, shifting the balance of power between the NFL and AFL and paving the way for the merger. Namath loved playing under pressure and won several big games for the Jets.

JULY 31- AUG. 6 2009

No. 6 Bart Starr Packers (1956-1971) His loss to the Eagles in the 1960 NFL Championship was his last postseason defeat ever. Starr was somewhat overshadowed by the Vince Lombardi mystique and all the talent around him, but the steady quarterback made the Packers click and was at his best in big games. It was Starr who called the play on his famous game-winning sneak in the "Ice Bowl" against the Cowboys.

FANTASY FANTASY FOOTBALL No. 4 John Elway Broncos (1983-1998) He led the Broncos to an NFLrecord 47 fourth-quarter comeback wins, including some of the most dramatic victories of all time. His 98-yard march down the field to beat the Browns in the 1986 AFC Championship Game is considered by many the greatest drive in league history. And Elway stepped up on the biggest stage later in his career, leading the Broncos to two Super Bowl wins.. No. 3 Johnny Unitas Colts, Chargers (1956-1973) He became a superstar when he led the Colts to a thrilling come-from-behind win in the 1958 NFL Championship against the Giants, considered by many the greatest game ever played. Johnny U was seemingly impervious to pressure, and you could never count his Colts out of a game.

No. 5 Tom Brady Patriots (2000-present) Nothing fazes the 28-year-old Patriots quarterback. The more pressure is on him, the more he seems to relax and make the right play. Brady's legend began to truly blossom when he led New England to a game-winning drive in Super Bowl XXXVI. He's since led them to two more championships and continues to play his best football when the game is on the line. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

No. 2 Roger Staubach Cowboys (1969-1979) also known as Roger the Dodger, Captain Comeback, and Captain America, Heisman Trophy winner and legendary Hall of Fame quarterback, Staubach was key in developing the Cowboys to become America's Team and led the team to nine of the Cowboys record-setting twenty consecutive winning seasons. Staubach led the Cowboys to their first Super Bowl victory and as a result he was named MVP in Super Bowl VI. Staubach was described by legendary coach Tom Landry as "possibly the best combination of a passer, an athlete and a leader to ever play in the NFL." No. 1 Joe Montana 49ers, Chiefs (1979-1992) His career was filled with dramatic performances under pressure. Starting with "The Catch" in the 1981 NFC Championship Game, Montana always found a way to help the Niners win the big game. "Joe Cool" never let pressure affect his play and was at his best in the national spotlight. He was 4-0 in Super Bowls and was MVP of the big game three times. PAGE

Jasmine Guy Directs Robin GIvens and Nicole Ari Parker in "For Colored Girls..."

SPECIAL 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT Robin Givens and Nicole Ari Parker are starring in the True Colors Theatre production of Ntozake Shange’s "for colored girls who have considered suicide when the rainbow is enuf." The production, directed by actress Jasmine Guy officially opens July 15 and will run through Aug. 9 at the Southwest Arts Center in Atlanta. The play is "portrayed through the poetry, dancing and narrative of a slate of women who become the colorful ladies of the rainbow. Both a joyous celebration of a unique culture and a wrenchingly real portrait of the struggle of an oppressed minority, "For Colored Girls…" tells the timeless story through 20 beautiful vignettes that inspire laughter and tears for the passion and pain of the black woman's experience." About Jasmine Guy Born to an African-American father and a white mother of Portuguese descent, Guy was raised in Atlanta, Georgia, where she attended the former Northside Performing Arts High School (which merged with North Fulton High School to form North Atlanta High School). Her mother's name is Jaye Rudolph, and her father, the Reverend William Guy, was pastor of the historic Friendship Baptist Church in Atlanta, which served as an early home to Morehouse College and Spelman College. (The latter school served as the setting for "Hillman College," the fictional school depicted in A Different World.) She later studied dance at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center in New York City in 1981.

During the run of A Different World, she released her self-titled debut album in 1990, which spawned three Billboard Top 100 hits: "Try Me", "Another Like My Lover", and "Just Want To Hold You." The album went on to sell 168,000 copies. In the spring of 2006, Jasmine spoke to the graduating class at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and revealed that she will record a second album. She commented that of all the entertainment industries, the music industry was the worst. She will sell her new album online herself and not through a major label, similar to the marketing strategy used by Prince.

for Playboy magazine and was ranked #88 on Empire Magazine 100 Sexiest Stars in Film History list in May 1995. In 1996, Givens portrayed Claudia in the 1996 television movie The Face (also known as A Face to Die For) with Yasmine Bleeth. Later that year, she co-starred in the UPN sitcom Sparks. The series ended its run in 1998.

About Robin Givens Givens was born in New York City, the daughter of Ruth Roper (née Newby) and Reuben Givens. Givens's mother and father divorced when she was two. She and her sister Stephanie were raised by their mother in New Rochelle, New York. Givens graduated in 1980 from New Rochelle Academy (closed 1987). Still at 15, she enrolled at Sarah Lawrence College. She later claimed she studied various medical courses at Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, although Harvard's registrar office only confirmed that she took one class in 1984. Givens first began acting in 1985 with an appearance on The Cosby Show, followed by roles in Diff'rent Strokes, and the 1986 television film Beverly Hills Madam opposite Faye Dunaway. That same year, she landed her breakthrough role as rich girl Darlene Merriman on the ABC sitcom Head of the Class. The series lasted five seasons, ending in 1991. In 1989, while starring in Head of the Class, she appeared in The Women of Brewster Place with Oprah Winfrey. She later appeared in 1992's Boomerang. In 1994, she posed nude

In January 2000, Givens appeared in a cameo in music video "He Wasn't Man Enough" by Toni Braxton, as the wife of a cheating husband. She returned to the entertainment industry later that year as the host of the talk show Forgive or Forget, replacing television personality Mother Love halfway through the show's first season. Ratings initially increased after Givens took over hosting duties, but soon fell. The series was canceled after its first season. In 2006, Givens attempted a return to television on MyNetworkTV's telenovela Saints and Sinners, but the show garnered low ratings and was soon canceled. Givens continued acting in made-for-television films while also making appearances on Trinity Broadcasting Network's Praise the Lord program (July 12, 2007), and Larry King Live. In June 2007, she released her autobiography Grace Will Lead Me Home. In 2008, Givens portrayed herself on The Game. She has also had a recurring role on the TBS show Tyler Perry's House of

THE URBAN EXPERIMENT

ebmar-Mercury, the television syndication and distribution arm of Lionsgate, announced yesterday that TBS has ordered an additional 20 episodes of the powerhouse comedy "Tyler Perry's House of Payne." The order will bring the number of episodes in the series to 172. TBS has ordered a total of 46 new episodes of "House of Payne" in recent weeks. "House of Payne" and its spinoff, "Tyler Perry's Meet the Browns", continue to rank as the top sitcoms on cable. "House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns" also rank as ad-supported cable's top two original sitcoms of all time among adults 18-49, viewers and households. So far in 2009, the shows are television's top two series in delivery of AfricanAmerican adults 18-34. "Meet the Browns" also ranks as television's #1 program among AfricanAmerican viewers and adults 18-49.

New episodes of "Meet the Browns" have averaged 3.2 million viewers this year, while new episodes of "House of Payne" have averaged 3 million viewers. "Tyler Perry has created the first sitcom in history to reach this many episodes in just two years, an a m a z i n g achievement that only a handful of top comedies have been able to achieve after many, many years," DebmarMercury CoPresident Mort Marcus said. "TBS's extension of this great program affirms the value of this groundbreaking sitcom model, which Tyler quickly turned from a dream into a phenomenal success," added Debmar-Mercury CoPresident Ira Bernstein. "House of Payne" - which is owned by Perry, distributed by Debmar-Mercury and licensed by TBS - debuted in 2006 with a test

TBS EXTENDS RUN OF 'TYLER PERRY'S HOUSE OF PAYNE', CABLE'S BIGGEST SITCOM HIT OF ALL TIME run of 10 episodes. After early results showed promise, TBS ordered a then-unprecedented 100 episodes. TBS later ordered an additional 26 episodes, followed by a deal for 26 more and then the 20episode order announced yesterday. Debmar-Mercury has utilized its groundbreaking approach to launching shows into distribution and syndication for four different series. Following in the footsteps of "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" and "Meet the Browns", DebmarMercury announced last week that TBS has ordered 10 episodes of the new Ice Cube sitcom "Are We There Yet?", slated to premiere in June 2010, with the option for an additional 90 episodes. DebmarMercury announced two weeks ago that it is using the same approach to launch the new Jon Heder sitcom from writer-producers Will Ferrell, Adam McKay and Chris Henchy ordered by Comedy Central. Debmar-Mercury also launched "The Wendy Williams Show" into nationwide syndication to strong initial ratings last week. Since making his film debut in

2005 with Lionsgate's DIARY OF A MAD BLACK WOMAN, Tyler Perry has become a multimedia phenomenon with a roster of hugely successful film, stage, television and book projects. Five of Perry's seven films have debuted at #1 at the North American box office, including his most recent movie, MADEA GOES TO JAIL, which was based on his most popular play. Perry is working on two new films, I CAN DO BAD ALL BY MYSELF and WHY DID I GET MARRIED TOO, scheduled to be released by Lionsgate in September 2009 and April 2010, respectively. In 2008, Perry unveiled Tyler Perry Studios, a 200,000-square-foot studio situated on the former Delta Air Lines campus in Atlanta, where his films and television shows are filmed. Debmar-Mercury, a worldwide media company specializing in syndication, network, cable and ancillary markets, produces and distributes "The Wendy Williams Show"; distributes "Tyler Perry's House of Payne" and spinoff "Meet the Browns."
