BENCH WARMER By CEDRIC E. LYONS COULD VICK SINGING BE NEAR According to the Washington Post, "There was renewed anticipation Monday in and around the NFL that recently reinstated quarterback Michael Vick might be inching closer to signing with a team. After Tony Dungy, the former Indianapolis Colts coach who serves as an adviser to Vick, said during the television broadcast of Sunday night's Hall of Fame Game that he expected Vick to sign soon, several people familiar with the deliberations indicated Monday a handful of teams have been demonstrating behind-the-scenes interest. "I don't know where he's gonna end up," one person familiar with the situation said, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the talks are at a sensitive stage. "I can't tell you which teams, but I know there's at least five." As of Monday, it had been two weeks since NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally reinstated Vick, allowing him to sign and participate in practices. Vick is eligible to play in his team's final two preseason games, and Goodell is to rule by Week 6 on Vick's eligibility to play in regular season games. The former standout quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons has missed the last two NFL seasons while serving his federal sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation in Virginia. His partial reinstatement by Goodell came a week after Vick was released from federal custody. Vick is a free agent after being released by the Falcons in the offseason. No NFL team has acknowledged publicly it is attempting to sign Vick. But Dungy, now an NFL analyst for NBC, said during the network's broadcast of the Bills-Titans preseason game in Canton, Ohio, that Vick had been in contact with a handful of teams, and "he has several teams interested."

Dungy said he'd spoken to a number of NFL coaches about Vick. The former coach did not identify any of the interested teams but indicated he believed Vick could be signed within a week or so. Dungy said "something may happen here pretty shortly." Dungy said he wasn't sure if Vick, who is set to be interviewed on "60 Minutes" this Sunday, is in footballplaying shape. But a person familiar with the situation said Monday he'd been told Vick is in very good physical condition after training recently with speed coach Tom Shaw. Vick's representatives have said little publicly about their deliberations with teams, and agent Joel Segal was not available to comment Monday. But even before Dungy's comments, some within the league had suspected Vick would end up back on an NFL roster at some point in the not-too-distant future. "There's usually a market for good football players," New York Giants General Manager Jerry Reese said late last week at his team's training camp in Albany, N.Y. "That's really not for me to say. [But] he's a good football player, so I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with a team before the season's out." Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie said at his club's camp in Bethlehem, Pa., last week that "with every player, there's risk" and he was waiting to see what happens when the Vick situation "plays itself out." The upstart United Football League, which begins play this fall, has been mentioned as a possible fallback. But people close to Vick have said he is focused on a return to the NFL. " Remember give him another chance, he deserves it. Publisher clyons@411sportsnews.com AUG. 13-19, 2009

DRAFT TIPS FANTASY FOOTBALL 2009 THE VALUE MENU MARC.DIFRANCIA back is Derrick Ward. His current ADP 49th putting him just outside the top four rounds These two rounds are your "I'm taking these in a twelve team league. Moving from New two guys because I missed out on two York to the Sunshine State, Ward should certain guys in the first two rounds." You will thrive in Tampa Bay. You may ask, "What find sleepers in these rounds, not as many as about Earnest Graham and the fact that the rounds to come, but there are definitely guys Bucs really don't have a good starting QB?" who are going to out perform their ADP's. My answers to you are so and so what's your point? The fact that Earnest Graham coming • QB: Now everybody say it with me, Brett... off an ankle injury could compete with Ward I mean Aaron Rodgers. In his first full year is scary to some, but why is that such a as a starter in Green Bay, Rodgers put up problem? Ward was signed in Tampa Bay GREAT numbers with over 4,000 yards passing and 28TDS. Currently, his ADP is 43rd overall and 7th in number of quarter backs taken before him. This makes my head spin. After coming off after such a superb year, why does everyone have him ranked as low as the end of the fourth round behind guys like Romo and Warner. Yes, these are elite quarter backs as well, but Rodgers has all the tools to put up top three quarterback numbers in any league. With guys like Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and Donald Lee to throw too, as well as, Jordy Nelson and James Jones, Green Bay has quite the receiving weapons to give teams a hard time matching up and that could spell Third and Fourth Rounds:

BY

Earnest Graham - Tampa Bay

Aaron Rodgers - Green Bay big numbers for Rodgers. With a year of experience under everyone's belt, Green Bay's offense should be among the top 10 in the league with Rodgers behind center. His ADP should be around 30-34 and could be the second or third best fantasy quarterback by the end of the season. (Projections: 315comp/4,050yards/30TDS/11INTS) • RB: The Value Menu's second running AUG. 13-19 2009

and paid starter money, so signs are he will be the starter: and even if Ward and Graham are platooning, what is the big deal? Who says the Bucs can't become a run happy team like their division foes the Carolina Panthers? The Bucs have a good offensive line and a shaky Quarterback situation, who says both Ward and Graham could get 200 rushing attempts a piece? I vote YES. Worst case scenario Ward splits with Graham and those numbers will still be good enough to warrant him a very valuable number two running back option on any fantasy team. Keep an eye on training camp for this one, odds are Ward gets most of the carries and does a lot with the carries he gets just like he did last year with the Giants and his 5.6 yards per rush. His ADP should be between 36-40 and he could put up numbers comparable to Pierre Thomas/Ronnie Brown or even Marion Barber and those players go two rounds before him! (Projections: 265att/1,350yards/10TDS/55rec/400yards/1 TD) • WR: So many wide receivers to choose from, but this position isn't as deep as previous years. Currently his ADP is 55th, introducing Chad Ochocincooo. Lately, his mouth and on the field touchdown celebrations have spoken louder than his WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

FANTASY FANTASY FOOTBALL numbers, but not this year. Before Carson

Chad Ocho Cinco - Cincinnati Palmer got hurt last year, Ochocinco would average90rec/1,370yards/8TDS. Now that Carson Palmer is back, (more about him later) Ochocinco should put up Ochocinco type numbers. Now that T.J. Houshmandzadeh is in Seattle, Ochocinco is the clear number one in the passing game. With the addition of Laveranues Coles playing on the other side, this will provide Chad equal or even more opportunities in the passing game than with T.J. Also, if Chris Henry can stay out of legal trouble, this team could be on course for a nice offense year. Look for Ochocinco to back to his old form: his ADP should be 36-42. (Projections: 90rec/1,300yards/9TDs) • TE: The first Tight End on The Value Menu has to be Tony Gonzalez. Once a Chief, now a Falcon, Gonzalez should put up elite numbers. With a shaky quarterback situation and an awful team last year, Gonzalez put up a stat line of 96rec/1,058yards/10TDS. Moving to Atlanta, with new and fresh quarterback Matt Ryan coming off a great first season; Gonzalez is going to continue his dominant form. With Roddy White and Michael Turner also in the offense, Gonzalez could help out in every facet of the game. The Falcons have said that they want him to block more, but is he really going to do that? Yes, he is a good blocker, but his hands are better at catching the ball rather than putting them in someone's face. His current ADP is 59th, when it should be between 45th-48th. Look for a good season from him in Atlanta. (Projections: 82rec/975yards/8TDS)

COVER STORY SPECIAL Tiger Woods did it again. The world's best fired a final-round, five-under 65 on Sunday to come from behind and win his seventh WGC-Bridgestone Invitational title. He finished at 12-under 268 and won by four at Firestone. The victory was significant for several reasons. Woods became the first player in PGA Tour history to win seven times on the same course. He is one away from joining Sam Snead as the only golfers to ever win the same championship eight times.

TIGERS CONTINUES

TO TAME THE WORLD

BY LLOYD VANCE, 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTANIMENT

Woods wasted very little time in trimming his threestroke deficit entering the round. He knocked his second shot to 24 feet at the par-five second and rolled in the eagle effort. That got him within one of Harrington, but that changed quickly. At the par-four fourth, Woods played his approach to 13 feet and converted the birdie putt. Harrington hit a spectacular shot from the rough to 20 feet, but wasn't able to make the birdie.

"We were locked horns pretty good," said Woods. "I made a couple mistakes there and Paddy was just being consistent. He did all the things he needed to do. Unfortunately, 16 happened." Woods has won two weeks in a row after last week's title at the Buick Open. He has all the momentum heading into Hazeltine next week for the PGA Championship when he'll try to avoid going major-less for the first time since 2004.

Four holes in and the two were already tied. "We'll start getting ready tomorrow," said Woods. Even the tie didn't last very long. AN INTERVIEW WITH: TIGER WOODS

This was Woods' 70th PGA Tour victory and he is only three behind Jack Nicklaus for second place all time.

Woods made a long birdie putt at the par-three fifth. That put him at 11-under par and gave him a one-shot cushion over Harrington, who kept plodding along with pars.

"I'm happy with seven here and 70 total," said Woods, who collected his fifth win of the year.

Five holes in and Woods was in the lead.

Overnight-leader Padraig Harrington got tripped up by one hole. He struggled to a two-over 72 and fell into a second place tie with Robert Allenby, who posted a 66, at minus-eight.

Both players parred the sixth, seventh and eighth holes and Woods appeared to be in trouble at nine. He drove into the right rough, but hit a sensational approach to seven feet. Woods drained that putt for birdie and it appeared to be a seventh title.

The pivotal hole became the par-five 16th. Harrington was one shot ahead of Woods and both hit tee shots that required lay ups. Woods hit his second into the fairway and Harrington played a bad second that was on a hill near a bunker. Woods hit an eight-iron from 182 yards out right at the flag. The ball spun back inches from going in and the pressure was firmly on Harrington for his third. From an awkward stance, Harrington's shot sailed into the right rough. As soon as he hit his pitch, one could hear Harrington groan. He hammered his pitch and the ball went directly into the pond. Harrington took a long, lonely walk back to the other side of the water and hit his sixth shot to the back fringe. He chipped to three feet and holed out for the triple-bogey. Now three ahead, Woods parred 17 and hit a great approach to five feet at the last. He converted that one for a final birdie, a great punctuation to a historic victory. "It was a great battle all day," said Woods.

Nine holes in and Woods had a two-shot lead. But Harrington showed the mettle that made him a two-time major champion last year. He rolled in an eight-foot birdie putt at the 11th and Woods did well to make par after a terrible drive in the left rough. Harrington cut the deficit to one and took some momentum. Woods missed the green at the par-three 12th, but saved par. He once again missed the short grass from the fairway at 13 and his chip came up well short. Woods had 14 feet for par, but his putt died to the right and two were tied atop the leaderboard at minus-11. Woods drove into the left bunker at 14 and his second went right of the greenside trap. He duffed his third into the trap, took almost no time at all and nearly holed his bunker shot. Woods settled for a bogey, while Harrington ran home a gutsy 15-footer for par to move one clear of Woods. Then the 16th happened to Harrington and it was later revealed the duo was put on the clock for slow play. For Woods, it was yet another spectacular win. WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

KELLY ELBIN: Four time PGA Champion, Tiger Woods, joining us at the 91st PGA Championship at Hazeltine National Golf Club. Tiger was second here in 2002, the only other time the PGA Championship was played here at Hazeltine, coming off consecutive wins at the Buick Open and last week at the Bridgestone Invitational. Welcome back to the PGA Championship and to Hazeltine, and comments on from what you have scene of the golf course. TIGER WOODS: Oh, man, the golf course is in phenomenal shape. It's a heck of a lot longer than what we played in 2002, and you know, it's going to be just a great test all week. It's playing a little bit soft as of right now. I don't know how much it's going to dry out with all of the rain they had, but it's playing very long right now, and it will be just a great test. You're going to have to hit the ball pretty good out there, especially if they play it all the way back. This is a pretty long golf course. Q. I was wondering for the sake of an analogy I'm hoping to draw, when you were running cross country in distance as a kid, did you have a pretty good closing kick? Second question would be, the last several years, you've really, really put it together in the second half of the season, often starting kind of right ash the British Open and you've reeled off these strings of ones and twos, if you have an explanation for that. TIGER WOODS: Growing up in southern Cal, the boys are fast, because my stretch after the British Opened it just happened to turn out that way. I don't know what it might be, but for some reason, I've played well in the middle part of the year and not every year, but certainly in some years. Q. There's been a lot written by some very prominent journalists that's been sharply critical of swearing and club slamming on the golf course during majors and other tournaments, how do you feel when you see these things that go out that women and kids and fans see, and do you think that if you made a change now, that people would find your reputation as a sportsman as equally impregnable and unassailable as your reputation as a championship golfer. TIGER WOODS: That's a great question, or AUG. 13-19, 2009

COVER STORY statement. (Laughter). It is what it is. Unfortunately I do make mistakes, and I hit bad shots and I say bad things at times. I don't mean to; it just comes out. It's not something that I try and do. It just happens. Have I been trying to get better at that? Yeah, my entire life. But it happens from time to time, and I'm not the only person that does it. Q. Have you heard from the TOUR regarding Sunday and the fine, and also, you're not a guy that typically putts his cards out on the table, and Padraig was in here earlier saying that it was easier for you having won the tournament to say what you said, and he felt in his position he would keep his mouth shut; why do you feel you had to say what you said if you felt that you needed to, and is there a point to be made with that, put your whistles away at the end of a game and let the players decide it? TIGER WOODS: Okay, what part of your question do you want me to answer first? (Laughter). Q. First have you heard from the TOUR? TIGER WOODS: Yes, I've heard from the TOUR and there's no fine that. Was an erroneous report. Second part? Q. About why you said what you said. NBA games, you're a big NBA fan, the fans tell the referees, put the whistles away and let them decide it. TIGER WOODS: The way I understood it, we were the only two in contention to win the event. We had separated ourselves. The winner was not going to come from the groups ahead, even though Robert played just a great round ahead of us. It was going to come from our group. And we were having a great battle. You know, I just thought that even after

Paddy had pitched the ball in the water, he then walked all around the lake, taking the drop, hit his shot over the green and pitched back up, we got on the 17th tee, hit our shots down the fairway and as we were arriving at the ball, the group ahead of us was now entering the 18th fairway. So we were not that far behind, maybe five minutes or whatever it may be from the group ahead of us. If Paddy does not hit the ball in the water, we play up, we are right behind the group in front of us. So that's why I was that's why I said what I AUG. 13-19 2009

said, because that certainly affected how Paddy played the hole, and how the outcome of the tournament, he was in control of the event. He was 1 up with three holes to go and he had a par 5. And you know, when we were put on the clock, it certainly changed everything. Q. We all kind of talk about No. 18 that you're looking at, but I wanted to know, are you beginning to think about Sam Snead's record, and then past that, Kathy Whitworth's 88, now that you're at 70 and holding; are those things that are shooting through your mind every once in awhile? TIGER WOODS: You know, those are numbers that are pretty mind boggling to get up that high. You know, those records and those numbers don't happen in the course of a few years; it's the course of an entire career. You know, I feel like I've had a pretty good start to my career and I still have a lot more years ahead of me, and you just keep playing. Where the number falls, the number falls when I'm all said and done. It's just one of those things where you just can't make that happen overnight, just like I've gotten to 14 majors, and to try and get to 18 or beyond, it's going to take an entire career, and we all know that. It's just a long process. The only time I think about it is when you guys bring it up. Sorry Mel. Q. If you win this week at the PGA, what letter grade would you give your 2009, and if you don't win this week, what letter grade would you give your season this year? TIGER WOODS: Well, it's been a great year either way. For me to come back and play and play as well as I've done and actually win golf events; to say at the very beginning of the year, when I was feeling the way I was, to be honest with you, I don't think any of us would have thought I could have won this many events this year. Q. Just to go back to Bridgestone for a moment, Padraig was saying that he was not able to sleep Sunday night. I wondered if you had a lasting sense of frustration and whether you also felt that it was perhaps sending out the wrong message to supporters, to spectators who had been enjoying what was a pretty compelling duel. TIGER WOODS: Absolutely. We had a great battle. Unfortunately I guess we had to finish by 6 o'clock. I guess that was that important. You know, we finished three minutes late, I think it was, so unfortunately we didn't get in in time and unfortunately that influenced the outcome of the event. Having a battle like that with Paddy when we go one on one like that and when we separated ourselves on the front nine, we were enjoying that battle, and that's why I think Paddy feels the way he does and that's certainly one of the reasons why I've said what I said because we were having such a great battle going head to head like that, and it got influenced from outside. Q. A year ago at this time you were missing WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

your second straight major. Just curious if you can recall what physical state you were in at that point, and could you have even looked out a year from then and imagined what you've accomplished in any way. TIGER WOODS: No, to look out a year back, August I was just coming off crutches, so trying to learn how to walk, yeah. So it wasn't a whole lot

of fun, no. Q. If a lot of fans had their way, you would be the kind of player who high fives and fist pumps your way around a golf course. Just wondering, can you talk about your on course demeanor and why that works best for you. TIGER WOODS: Yeah, when I'm playing, I just kind of like to get in my own little world and do my thing. There are times when, yeah, I do get excited, and you know, emotions do come out, positively. But those are just you let that just happen. It's just not something that I ever plan. It just comes out. That's just the heat of the moment. You just pull off a shot or you have a situation where it gets pretty intense and you're somehow able to execute the way you know you can and you pull it off, yeah, I get excited. I couldn't get that excited on the very first hole of, you know, a tournament just because I made a 3 footer; it just comes out whenever it comes out, it comes out. Sometimes I look back on it, because I don't realize what I had done. People may say something, and I didn't realize how I celebrated at the U.S. Open when I made that putt to get into the playoff against Rocco. I didn't realize how stupid that looked. (Laughter) It just comes out. Q. You said this would be a great year, mostly because of the come back from the knee, would you have said in the past with five wins and no majors, you've been pretty open about your emphasis on the majors, and when you look at the majors this year, is there any thread to why you were not able to pull it off? You obviously contended in the first two, is there something you've identified reflecting that you need to improve? TIGER WOODS: I've said that in the past but I didn't have ACL reconstruction, either. It usually take as while for an athlete to come back, and most guys, or some of the guys who have had it in our sport have not gone onto have the years I've

TIGERS CONTINUES

TO TAME THE WORLD... CONTINUED FROM PAGE

had this year. I'm very proud of not only winning the golf tournaments but how consistent I've played. The only one bad event I've had was the British Open. Otherwise I've had a pretty good run of Top 10s, stroke play events, like 18 or 20 in a row, I think that's pretty good. As far as the Masters, the Masters I did not putt well. I putted well in streaks and I didn't finish off the rounds the way I should have. At the U.S. Open, I putted very, very poorly. Hit the ball well enough to win, but certainly did not putt well enough to win. And the British Open, I had six bad holes that cost me a chance of contending on the weekend. Q. For those of us that don't follow you week in and week out, you get in a situation here in Minnesota where you have crowds like this following you on a Monday and Tuesday, is that typical of what you find around the country, or is this something a bit different for you? TIGER WOODS: No, it's very atypical. We only get people that come out in this number and show this much enthusiasm and watch us play, to have that many people out here in a practice round is phenomenal. Even at Bethpage this year, we never saw this many people. We thought that would have been the most that we would have had all year. This place has been phenomenal; on a Monday afternoon to see all of these people out here, I couldn't believe it yesterday, and today it was even more. I think it's going to be a great

week. Q. You won before the Masters, you won before the Open, our Open, their Open, and now you've won two; is that an accurate gauge of where your game is now vis a vis this major championship? TIGER WOODS: You know, Larry, I feel as if I made some pretty good strides since the British Open. I had some nice practice sessions before the Buick, and especially on Monday and Tuesday after the Buick. I really had some good work down there. I think it was evident the way I was hitting the golf ball last week, I really hit it good last week, and hopefully I can improve on that and carry that over into this week. Q. From your perspective, what distinguishes the PGA Championship from the game's other three majors, and now that you've seen the golf course, what target score might it take to win this week at Hazeltine? TIGER WOODS: Well, as far as what distinguishes it, it's the best field that we play against. This is the deepest field that we get, and usually there's 98 or 99 of the Top 100 players in the world here. I don't know what the number is this year but that's usually around what the number is. It's been very deep; you know if you win this championship, you've beaten the best field in all of golf. As far as a target score, we are still trying to

7

work that out, because with the added length and don't know how much the golf course is going to dry out, I think I'll get a better idea of when they set the golf course up on Thursday; I don't know

how far up they are going to play it or how far back they are going to play it, or how they are going to utilize certain tees, 13, 14, one up, one back, two up, two back, whatever it's going to be, and how they set up the par 5s will certainly determine what guys do. KELLY ELBIN: Currently 99 of the Top 100 players in the world are in the field this week. Q. Could you tell us about the changes made to holes 7, 12 and 13 and how you like them and how you think they are going to play this week? TIGER WOODS: Yeah, 7 is a little bit longer. They give you a little bit better angle, but I can't get to the corner, or around the corner like I used

Top 10 Wide Recievers of all time The playing field isn't exactly level when measuring the greatest wide receivers of all time. Depending upon the quality of the quarterbacks they played with, whether their team was built around the passing or the running game, or the defensive talent they faced in their era, these players accomplishments can be difficult to measure against their peers when it comes to compiling a top ten list. Still, as with all great athletes in any sport the cream always rises to the top, and the best of the best seem to rise above any adversity. Here is my top ten list of the men who've been able to dominate the sport of football at the wide receiver position. 10 - Terrell Owens This guy is one of the purest athletes on the planet. His pure speed and ability to get open make him a nightmare for opposing teams to defend. Sure, he has a habit of dropping balls, and his Te r r e l l - f i r s t attitude make him a questionable asset in the locker room, but with 129 career TDs and over 13,000 yards it is pretty tough to justify keeping him off this list. 9 - Marvin Harrison Sure, this guy has had the benefit of playing with one of the greatest guns in NFL history, but then again so did Jerry Rice, and I don't think anyone is going to dispute his certain inclusion in this list. Great quarterbacks like Peyton Manning only put up the numbers they do because they have rock-steady options like Marvin Harrison to go to. 123 touchdowns, over 1,000 receptions, including an NFL record 143 grabs in 2002. Nuff said. 8 - Charley Taylor Though he played in a different era, Charley Taylor's accomplishments stand up against today's finely tuned athletes. When he retired from the NFL in 1977 he was the all time league leader in receptions with 649, and yards with 9,110. This was despite playing his first two seasons at the running back position, and missing the bulk of two more seasons with injury. 7 - Cris Carter Like many high profile athletes in the sport of professional football, Cris Carter had offfield issues (drug and alcohol abuse) that probably had a negative impact AUG. 13-19 2009

on his performance on the field. Yet despite the personal issues he faced he managed to compile 130 TDs, 1,101 receptions, and almost 14,000 yards. It's scary to imagine that those numbers could have been even higher had he stayed out of trouble and kept his primary focus on football. 6 - Art Monk This guy seems to get no respect in the sport of football. It took eight tries to finally get him into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, with those opposing his inclusion citing he did not have the numbers to justify a spot. His inclusion earlier this year was well-earned, and an example for everyone that football greatness is not always about the numbers. It was not as though Monk's career numbers were anything to sneeze at though. When Jerry Rice broke the all-time career reception record in 1995, it was Monk's mark of 940 that he overtook. Monk also amassed almost 13,000 career yards, and a respectable 68 touchdown catches. He also owns three Superbowl rings, and that's really the only number that truly matters in the sport. 5 - Steve Largent The Seahawks' greatest player ever after Brian Bosworth (just kidding), Largent was not your prototypical wide receiver. At only 5'11" and 185 pounds, with average foot speed it is hard to believe he put up the numbers he did over his career. However, he made up for his physical shortcomings with a cunningness, and a deceptiveness that confounded defenders. His 13,000 yards and 100 TDs might not quite match up to some on this list, but they are hugely impressive for a "little guy" so he deserves a spot in the top half of this list. 4 - Michael Irvin

Yet another guy with problems off the field that perhaps could have put up even greater career statistics than he did. Michael Irvin was always a controversial figure, into drugs, and allegations of assault dogging him, but coaches and teammates were willing to overlook these things for what Irvin accomplished on the field. He did not put up the career numbers of some others on this list, but his performance in big games and his three Superbowl rings make him an easy choice for fourth place on this list. 3 - Paul Warfield When I decided to compose a list of the top ten NFL wide receivers I was faced with the challenge of finding at least a few from bygone eras. Paul Warfield's inclusion this high on the list might raise a few eyebrows, but I think he is well deserving. When you look at Warfield's career statistics, one accomplishment immediately WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM

FANTASY FANTASY FOOTBALL jumps to the forefront: 20.1 yards per catch average. This guy consistently gave his team great field position every time his number was called. With 8,565 yards for 85 touchdowns his other numbers are solid, if unspectacular, but don't tell the whole story. He was an 8-time Probowler and a key member of the 1972 Dolphins during their magical undefeated season. 2 - Randy Moss This guy was born to be a wide receiver. No question about it. Every physical attribute he possesses is tailer-made for the position. Long and lanky, with incredible top speed, and hands that never seem to drop a ball, Moss is arguably the most talented wide receiver ever to play the game. It is no secret that he has some issues on and off the field, but his talent easily eclipses any negatives that might come with his combative personality. This was readily apparent when New England decided to take a chance on him this past off-season. Moss rewarded that faith by catching the most TD passes in a single season in NFL history. Moss has only played 10 seasons so far, and still seems to just be reaching his full potential. Barring injury, he should have a number of productive seasons ahead of him, and with 124 TD catches already he could be a threat to do the unthinkable, and overtake Jerry Rice for first all-time in that category. If he spends a few more years with Tom Brady it is entirely possible. 1 - Jerry Rice Though Randy Moss may one day own this coveted spot, as of today's writing there can be no debate that Jerry Rice is a nobrainer for the top spot of the top ten NFL wide receivers. With three Superbowl rings, 207 career TDs (197 receiving TDs), 1549 receptions, and 22,895 yards his numbers are simply so far above his peers they may never be broken. His list of NFL records is mind-boggling, with over 200 to his credit. Even if Randy Moss one day eclipses many of these marks many fans and students of the game will always have Jerry Rice at the head of their list. He was simply that good.

COVER "The Wait Is Over" read the monitors inside the ballroom at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills on Thursday (July 23). Whitney Houston heralded her return to music with the last of three ritzy listening sessions for her first studio album in seven years, I Look to You. Rap-Up.com was inside and has a play by play of the evening's events, including our impressions of the nine previewed tracks. The stars turned out in droves including Halle Berry, Jane Fonda, Stevie Wonder (who arrived fashionably late), Magic Johnson, Jackie Collins, Barry Manilow, Brett Ratner, Beverly Johnson, Diane Warren, Penny Marshall, Brian McKnight, David Foster, and Garcelle Beauvais. Phones and cameras were prohibited,

SPECIAL 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT although many disregarded the restriction. Clive Davis introduced the album and played a video montage highlighting his protege's impressive achievements. The music mogul spoke about the 19-year-old girl he molded into one of the most successful artists of all time, selling 170 million albums, singles, and videos worldwide. He joked about how ¡§American Idol¡¨ contestants get flak for attempting to cover Whitney songs because only the originator can do them justice. Whitney asked Clive if she should start writing her own songs, but he told her to only do so if she felt she could deliver something stellar. He then began playing each of the nine songs, starting with ¡§Million Dollar Bill.¡¨ During the last song, a cover of Leon Russell's "A Song for You," the 45-year-old singer walked on stage to a standing ovation and roaring cheers, wearing a black

cocktail dress. She looked happy and healthy. "I am so humbled and so thankful for you all for coming. There is so much love in the room and I thank you and I feel it," she told the crowd. She hugged Stevie Wonder ("How much I love that man, I can't even tell you") and acknowledged the other celebrities in attendance including her close friend Halle Berry ("How's the baby?"), Jane Fonda ("I almost croaked. Jane Fonda at my listening party?!"), Beverly Johnson ("Baby, you are America's Top Model"), R. Kelly ("One of the best singer-songwriters in the industry"), Diane Warren (who she impersonated), and David Foster. "It took me three-and-a-half years," she said about the recording process. "I took my time." Clive and Whitney worked closely together on the project. "I'm back home where I belong," she said looking at Clive, before joking that he parties like a rock star. She recalled when Clive once told her, "You're just impossible" After seeing plaques from legends like Mick Jagger and Janis Joplin on his office walls, she asked, "I'm the impossible one?" Everyone laughed. The new album is contemporary, but you can expect to hear the same Whitney Houston you¡¦ve come to know and love. The empowering songs have a feel-good vibe, complemented by Whitney's strong vocals (in fine form) and memorable melodies courtesy of today's top producers and songwriters such as Alicia Keys, Swizz Beatz, Akon, R. Kelly, Danja, Eric Hudson, Diane Warren, David Foster, Claude Kelly, and Tricky Stewart. The music feels natural and not trying to pander to what's hot at the moment. Whitney exited the stage just as she entered, to a standing ovation and thunderous applause. "God bless you. I love you. Peace!" Below are the nine tracks we heard. They are unfinished versions in many cases, according to Clive. 1. "Million Dollar Bill" Swizz Beatz/Alicia Keys As we first reported here, Swizz Beatz produced this track. Alicia Keys wrote it

after personally asking Clive to write for Whitney¡¦s album. The song doesn¡¦t have a typical Swizz sound and feels more old-school R&B. It puts you in a good mood, but don¡¦t let the title fool you. This is not an attempt at being a hip-hop club banger. It was the favorite for many. No doubt this will become a single. 2. "Nothin' But Love" Danja Uptempo, danceable, hand-clapping beat. Whitney’s vocals are on prominent display as she belts out several long runs. Urban radio will eat this up. 3. "Call You Tonight" Stargate/Johnta Austin This was a contender for the lead single. It features a guitar riff common in Stargate productions (With You¨ and Irreplaceable). I wish that I could stay, but I gotta go/ Let me call you tonight, just as soon as I get home,¡¨ she sings. 4. "I Didn’t Know My Own Strength" David Foster/Diane Warren A version of this previously leaked to the Internet. Clive likened the power ballad to ¡§I Will Always Love You.¡¨ It was recorded after her separation from Bobby Brown and tells of triumph in the face of diversity. Clive told Diane Warren, ¡§You¡¦ve written one of your great copyrights.¡¨ 5. "Like I Never Left" feat. Akon Akon/Claude Kelly Another track that leaked last year. The version that was played sounded more complete with added bass. Clive said

Whitney wanted an island song, so they reached out to Akon. Clive started to dance to this one, which was pretty entertaining in itself. We didn¡¦t love this when we first heard it, but it has grown on us considerably. 6. "Salute" R. Kelly Militaristic, marching beat. R. Kelly also has his vocals featured (¡§Eh eh eh¡¨). One of our personal faves. ¡§I¡¦m a soldier girl/ In this world/ I stand alone/ I can be strong/ I walked the lines/ I made it home/ It¡¦s good to know without you I made it.¡¨ Whitney even throws in an LL Cool J reference: ¡§Don¡¦t call it a comeback, I¡¦ve been here for years.¡¨

8. "Worth It" Eric Hudson/Johnta Austin Midtempo piano ballad. ¡§I know somebody¡¦s gonna make love to this song tonight,¡¨ she coos. A great groove and the dark horse of the album. 9. "A Song for You" Leon Russell/Harvey Mason Jr.

Stewart/Harvey

HE SAY/ SHE SAY Here's the scenario: Husband and Wife are newlyweds. Prior to the wedding, an ex-girlfriend came back into the picture while husband and wife were dating. The guy talked with the ex about getting back together and fiance found out. The guy says there was nothing to it, old feelings came rushing back for a fleeting moment, but it wasn't reality. Fiance forgave and the couple moved forward and got married. A few months into the marriage, wife finds out that husband and the ex are still talking to each other, not just a few minutes, but hours over the phone and via email and text. Husband says there's nothing going on and that it's just a "release" to be able to talk to an old "friend". Wife feels he should be able to talk to her, not another woman. She feels its emotional infidelity. How would you feel if your husband/wife continued to talk with his/her exgirlfriend/boyfriend to this extent and what would you do? What if the spouse feels that he/she can't talk to their spouse so they reach out to the ex to talk about what's going on in their marriage for "advice" and help? He Says... This situation is a very serious one not to be taken lightly. The wife would be absolutely right for feeling like the other is emotionally cheating on her. If you asked any other woman, they would all agree. As husband and wife, part of the unity is being able to confide in one another and communicate with each other about Your marriage. It's not a good sign that he's lied about any aspect of the situation. If it's innocent, then why be secretive, or lie? Here's a suggestion: If the interaction is totally innocent then suggest that the friend speak with both parties at the same time about the relationship while on the phone. There should not be any reluctance about this if it's innocent. However, if there's resistance around this suggestion it must not be ignored. This is a red flag that there is something more to the situation. Although it may not be physical (now) it is emotional and that often times is much worse than physical infidelity. She Says... I would be totally devastated if my husband were still in close contact with one of his ex girlfriends... Since my first husband began cheating on me with a coworker of his, now I just don't trust a man being too close to another woman.... PERIOD! He Says... I am not insecure... so I could really careless. My wife knows I speak to my exes but I have such lil if any convo for them that its really a non-issue to her. She Says... But your wife knows. What if your wife doesn't know? She thinks the past is in the past but finds out it's not. What if the shoe were on the other foot? He Says... Hiding it can cause suspicion but if the convo is 'regular' why the secrecy? PAGE

HE SAY/ SHE SAY She Says... He just got married. Why does he need a release? I don't see the problem with him talking to an ex. However, if that ex is taking the place of the wife, meaning he's talking to the ex and not the wife, then, it's an issue and he needs to stop. He Says... When ex the came back, his old emotions were reborn, and as a result, they are still there--even in his new marriage. They are both holding on to one another perhaps due to subconscious hopes that they can possibly rekindle a lost love. She Says... He loves the ex. Now he can be honest with her because the expectation for him to be great isn't there and when the pressure is off of him they reconnected. He Says... Just a bad situation. Expect nothing but bad from this one. If they are in the same area, you KNOW he stepping out. If they are distant, at some point, one of them might make it their business to visit the other. She Says... This smells like trouble. He just got married. If he is talking to the ex for a release more than the new wife then he perhaps married the wrong person. He Says... It seems to me that he is reconnecting, connecting and releasing with the ex & him and the wife will never get on the same page.... She Says... 3 yrs ago, this happened to my husband. Only it was not an ex, just a friend he knew from high school. When we went to visit his home town, he ended up sleeping with her. When he confessed to me, he said, he did not understand how it happened. In conversations he always told her how I was his best friend, etc. When I discovered the phone bill, I was shocked. I told him it happened because he was already caught up in an emotional affair. This is the problem I had with my husband even when we were dating. Not setting boundaries with friends of the opposite sex. If she continues to go along with this behavior, eventually, he will cross the line. My marriage is hanging by threads now, because once again, he got caught up in an emotional affair. To them, it is a true friend. And because of the emotional attachment, they do not want to lose this person. He Says... Speaking from experience, this is nothing but trouble. Dude needs to stop NOW! This is a hard road to get off of once you start heading that way. Simply put, he should not talk to her anymore. Although it is simple and easy for me to say that but harder for him to actually do. Networking Spot Light on Hawthorne TNT's "Hawthorne," Starring Jada Pinkett Smith, Set to Return for Second Season TNT has picked up a second season of its hit medical drama "Hawthorne," starring and executive-produced by Jada Pinkett Smith ("The Women," "The Matrix" trilogy) and created by Emmy winner John Masius ("St. Elsewhere," "Providence," "Dead Like Me"). The network has ordered an additional 10 episodes of the character-driven drama, which airs Tuesdays at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). For its first season, "Hawthorne" is averaging 3.8 million viewers and ranks as ad-supported cable's #1 entertainment program on Tuesdays among adults 25-54 and women 25-54. The second season is slated to air in 2010. "Hawthorne" co-stars Michael Vartan ("Alias"), Suleka Mathew ("Men in Trees"), David Julian Hirsh ("Lovebites"), Christina Moore ("Hyperion Bay") and Hannah

Hodson (TNT's "The Ron Clark Story"). The series is produced for TNT by Sony Pictures Television in association with Pinkett Smith's 100% Womon Productions, John Masius Productions, and Jamie Tarses' FanFare Productions. Pinkett Smith, Masius, Glen Mazzara ("The Shield," "Crash," "Life") and Jamie Tarses ("My Boys") serve as executive producers. "Hawthorne has been a great addition to TNT's lineup of original series, and Jada Pinkett Smith's performance has been a tremendous draw with viewers," said Michael Wright, executive vice president, head of programming for TNT, TBS and Turner Classic Movies (TCM). "There are powerful episodes remaining, and we're looking forward to what is certain to be an extraordinary second season." Pinkett Smith plays Christina

Hawthorne, a compassionate and headstrong Chief Nursing Officer heading up a group of dedicated nurses at Richmond Trinity Hospital who spend long days and nights on the hospital's front lines. Hawthorne is the kind of nurse who fights for her patients and doesn't let them slip through the cracks. When necessary, she takes on doctors and administrators who are overworked, distracted or just unable to see the human being behind the hospital chart. But the long days at the hospital and Christina's intense focus on helping others take a toll on her personal life. She is still coming to terms with losing her husband, who died a year ago after a battle with cancer, leaving her to raise their smart, rebellious teen-age daughter on her own. Constantly trying to strike a balance between her career and her equally important role as a parent, Christina finds little time to take care of the one person who always seems to fall through the cracks ... herself.

Uptown Magazine Co-Founder Brett Wright That circulation and frequency would closely match Uptown's, and Burnett said the two publications will have synergies such as in staff and administrative needs. "This will create a stronger positioning for the company, by offering advertisers young adults and affluent African-Americans. These are the two most active segments of the consumer market." Burnett sees some changes in Vibe's editorial focus. "We'll go back to its roots of covering urban culture," he said. "It had gotten a little narrow in its focus on hip-hop. We're going to cover that and R&B and other music forms, as well as fashion and entertainment." The return to Vibe's helm has to be something of a sweet victory for Burnett. He was one of the original founders of the magazine in 1993 and served as Vice President and Group Publisher until he resigned in October of 2007. Burnett said of this newest twist of fate, "It's good to come back. Obviously Vibe has always been very near and dear to my heart."

TIGERS CONTINUES

TO TAME THE WORLD... CONTINUED FROM PAGE

to, with the added length. You said 11? 12. Yeah, 12 is over 500 yards. I absolutely I roasted a driver down there today, and to hit a full 3 iron in there; that's a little bit longer than it used to be. And what is it, 13, full 5 wood for me. Bubba was hitting some kind of cut 3 iron in there, just I didn't see that shot, either. If they play the tee all the way back where we played it, it's a wood for me or maybe a long iron to a front pin, but most of the guys will be hitting some kind of head cover. Q. When you start playing really well, when you seem to raise your game as you seemed to have in the last few weeks, we in the media love to compare you and the state of your game to 2000 when you were playing at a totally different level. If you went out tomorrow and played your 2000 self 18 hole match play, who wins and why? TIGER WOODS: I would win now. I know how to manage my game a hell of a lot better than I did back then. Just understanding how to get the ball around; I have so many more golf shots now to get me around the golf course. And that's just experience. That's nine more years of learning how to play and how to manage my game around a golf course. And I'll probably say the same thing nine more years, because I have that much more understanding mentally. Physically, I don't know if I'll be able to hit the ball quite as far, but understanding how to play, that's just years of experience. AUG. 13-19 2009

Q. Going back to the timing issue last Sunday, do you in any way regret personalizing the issue by naming John Paramor in your criticism of TIGER WOODS: No. Because he's the one who did it. Q. And secondly, do you have any sympathy for what he has to do and officials like him have to do under these circumstances? And thirdly where does discretion begin and end in the discussion of slow play which is really strangling the game? TIGER WOODS: Yeah, that's why I thought they would have used better judgment on that considering that, as I said, we were the ones that were probably going to win the golf tournament in the last group. We separated ourselves. And after what Paddy went through, we were still right there behind the group in front of us. So I don't know if the group in front of us was being timed or not. They didn't look like they were rushing. But it certainly influenced us in how we played and influenced the outcome of the tournament, which that's not how you want to have the tournament come to an end. Q. Where does discretion begin and end on the subject of slow play, which is strangling the game? TIGER WOODS: Yeah, you're right. But then again, we were in the last group, and you know, we finished at 6:03.

Q. Back to your physical conditioning. Studies show that virtually every professional golfer suffers injuries during the course of their career. Are you doing anything different or more or better in order to avoid having another physical injury? TIGER WOODS: Well, hmm, had four knee surgeries, so I guess that's significant I guess. As far as other parts of my body, I've always had a pretty healthy body. I've been very lucky that way. I've never had any back issues. No neck issues, where a lot of guys certainly had that. I've never had that problem. The only area that I've had is in my knee when I first had those tumors in my knee, and that's kind of what started the whole thing. Q. You say it's lucky that you haven't had these injuries; you must be doing a lot of things that people are advising you to do in order to avoid having them, it's certainly possible to avoid them, isn't it? TIGER WOODS: Certainly I've trained hard to get to this point, but also, then again, I've also been very lucky in that regard, too. All it takes it one bad shot. A couple of guys have got hurt with one bad shot and they have been out for a long time. I've been very lucky that way. KELLY ELBIN: Tiger Woods, thank you very much. FastScripts by ASAP Sports ...

PERSONALS 411 in Entertainment THE URBAN EXPERIMENT The deal was negotiated last month by Sony Pictures and its sibling unit, Sony Music Entertainment, with the Michael Jackson Estate and AEG Live, producer of the late singer's planned London concert series. Director Kenny Ortega ("High School Musical"), who was directing the concert series, is in negotiations with Sony to produce and direct the movie. "The world will see what our team was so fortunate to experience, which was the full commitment, passion and creativity that Michael put into the project," Ortega said in a statement.

Sony OK'd to Produce Michael Jackson Pic Sony Pictures Entertainment has received court approval to bring Michael Jackson to the big screen in a film based on more than 80 hours of rehearsal and behind-the-scenes footage from the late singer's planned "This Is It" London concert series. The film is set for release on Oct. 30th. According to the deal, Sony will share revenue with AEG Live, the producer of the canceled concerts, after paying a reported $60 million for the film rights.

Along with the rehearsal and behind-thescenes footage, Sony obtained the rights to include some 3-D sequences that were going to be shown on video screens during the "This Is It" concerts. The film will be a career retrospective featuring footage from Jackson’s last rehearsals, as well as interviews with friends and collaborators, according to a statement from AEG. Jackson, 50, died on June 25 in Los Angeles, just three weeks before the "This Is It" concerts at London's O2 Arena were to begin. The LA coroners' office has said

the autopsy on Jackson's body is now complete, however results will not be announced until a police investigation is complete.

Gabrielle Union takes "Vow" with Tracey Edmonds and Sheila Ducksworth on Lifetime Gabrielle Union has joined with Tracey Edmonds and Sheila Ducksworth to executive produce the Lifetime movie, "The Vow," for Sony Pictures TV. Union will also co-star in the telepic. "Vow" is based on Denene Millner, Angela BurtMurray and Mitzi Miller's 2005 novel about three women who all decide to be engaged within a year after attending a wedding. Nzingha Stewart will adapt the novel for television. Union will appear in ABC's new prinetime scifi drama "FlashForward," in a recurring role. She was last seen in the film "Cadillac Records."
