GOODELL: VICK ELIGIBLE TO PLAY WEEK 3 NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell has announced Eagles quarterback Michael Vick will be eligible to play in Week 3 when Philadelphia hosts Kansas City at Lincoln Financial Field. Goodell had previously stated Vick would be considered for full reinstatement and possibly play in regular-season games by Week 6 based on the progress he made in his transition plan. The two met on Thursday at the team's hotel in New Jersey prior to the new ruling. "I do not want him to be put in a position where he's overwhelmed," Goodell said. "Ultimately, it was my decision." Vick has not taken an NFL regular-season snap since December, 2006, spending 19 months in a federal prison after pleading guilty to federal charges stemming from a dogfighting operation conducted at a house he owned in Surry County, Virginia. The signal-caller signed a one-year contract with a one-year team option with Philadelphia in August. Vick is expected to see significant playing time Thursday when the Eagles play their final preseason game against the Jets. Good Move Roger! Bucs fire Jagodzinski

coordinator
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have dismissed offensive coordinator Jeff Jagodzinski, who has now lost two jobs within the same calendar year. Jagodzinski was named the Bucs' offensive coordinator on January 29, less than a month after being fired as head coach at Boston College. He was dismissed at BC after interviewing for the head coaching position with the New York Jets. Boston College athletic director Gene DeFilippo had told Jagodzinski he would be fired if he met with NFL personnel. "I am certainly disappointed but I wish nothing but the best for [head coach] Raheem Morris and the entire Buccaneer organization," said Jagodzinski in a statement. "I was given the chance to remain on staff as the quarterbacks coach, but felt that the timing for such a move was not in the best interest for either side. I appreciate the opportunity that was given to me. Again, I wish nothing but the best for this organization." Morris said the move was made, in part, WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM
because the offense wasn't as "precise" as he wanted it to be and that the decision had nothing to do with Byron Leftwich's selection as the starting quarterback. "We all came to a common accord last week when we made Byron Leftwich our quarterback," Morris said Thursday. "We needed more direction, we needed more precision and I wasn't getting it at the time. So you make the change, and that's where we are." The Bucs promoted quarterbacks coach Greg Olson to the offensive coordinator's position on Thursday. He will also retain his post as quarterbacks coach. Olson joined the Bucs as the QB coach in 2008 and was retained when Morris was given the head coach's job in January. Olson previously served as an offensive coordinator with the Detroit Lions in 2005 and the St. Louis Rams from 2006-07. "He's called plays in this league for awhile," Morris added. "[He's] been back and forth, been through the grind, been through everything we need to get done, knows where we want to go, very detailed coach, very precise coach and that's where we want to go on offense if we're going to have any success." Jagodzinski was hoping to make a return to the NFL after a two-year stint as the head coach at BC. He compiled a 21-7 record with the Eagles. Before taking the collegiate head job, Jagodzinski was the offensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers in 2006. He also coached the tight ends for the Packers from 1999-2003 and spent the 2004 and 2005 campaigns with the Atlanta Falcons, first as tight ends coach and then as offensive line coach. "It's not a knock on Coach Jagodzinski," Morris stated. "It's just what we needed to do, the plan we needed to have, and a lot of things remain the same. This offense was going in the right direction and you've got to give Jagodzinski credit. He did get it started going in the right direction; now we've got to finish off the deal with some of our other guys." Jagodzinski becomes the second offensive coordinator fired in the NFL this week, following Kansas City's Chan Gailey. I just take issue with the last statement. It is a knock on Coach Jagodzinski, HE Can’t Coach!

DEVIN POPE
It’s hard for the sleepers to stay sleeping these days because there are so many fantasy football writers out there. Here a few names I think you should have on your draft board and free agents who can be big towards the end of the year. Sleepers: Brett Favre (Vikings):
I know I know I’m sick of hearing his name too but he is a guy who can give you 20 plus touchdowns and has the weapons around him to give you points each week. There are recent talks in the Vikings locker room that the starter hasn’t been named but I’m confident he will be taking snaps week one. The Vikings start out with a pretty easy schedule playing the Browns, Lions and the 49ers in the first three weeks. This should help Favre build confidence with his teammates and help them forget Sage Rosenfels and Tavaris Jackson. I have noticed that in mock drafts he has been going in later rounds because some sites have him ranked pretty low.
Brett Favre (Vikings)
in the league. He is looking good so far in preseason and will get more touches than the third man on the depth chart Danny Ware. Being a backup it’s hard to know what week he is going to have a good game but Brandon Jacobs is prone to injuries and hasn’t played a full season since 2005. Even if you can just plug Bradshaw in for a few weeks if Jacobs goes down he will pay dividends for you. Jamaal Charles (Chiefs):
receiver on the Bengal’s depth chart but I see him having a very productive year. In 2006 he had 36 receptions for 605 yards and 9 touchdowns in 14 games. That is also when Chad Johnson (before he became Ochodecinco) and TJ Houshmandzadeh where on the field. Henry has had many off the field issues and has a knack for getting in trouble. But if he keeps his nose clean I can see him putting up 700 yards and 8 touchdowns. John Carney (Saints): I started laughing when writing this knowing that I’m listing a kicker as a
Jamaal Charles (Chiefs With Todd Haley now in Kansas City his pass happy offense will be there too. He doesn’t have the same weapons he had in Arizona but the same game plan will now be in Kansas City. Larry Johnson isn’t a great fit for Haley and the Chief’s offensive game plan. He isn’t the best pass catcher and his blocking abilities are skeptical. Charles has better receiving skills and is a better blocker. He averaged 5.3 yards per carry last year and caught 27 balls. LJ hasn’t played a full season since 2006 and isn’t in good graces with the team. This is an issue of Charles just being a better fit for the team. One concern is that Charles has had issue with ball control and laying it on the turf too often.
Ahmad Bradshaw (Giants):
Chris Henry (Bengals):
Taking over Derrick Ward’s role from last and his 1,025 yards rushing and 41 receptions with 384 receiving yards and two scores. He will be running behind one of the best offensive lines
This guy has been great during preseason and is a touchdown machine. His 6-4 frame gives Carson Palmer a nice target for the end zone. He is currently the number three

John Carney (Saints) sleeper but there is opportunity with Carney. Garrett Hartley has been suspended for the first 4 weeks due to the leagues substance abuse policy. This now give Carney 4 weeks to come in and show the Saints what he is made of. Last year he had a similar issue when Lawrence Tynes of the Giants got hurt and he came in to play the season and put up big numbers. The Saints have one of the best offenses in the league and they will be in the red zone often. Playing in a dome is a benefit as well and his name isn’t on draft boards and he can be picked up as a free agent as well. Well there are a few names to consider when drafting or looking through the free agent list. Have fun and I wish you the best of luck in your league. PAGE

SERENA WILLIAMS LOOK TO DEFEND OPEN TITLE
BY LLOYD VANCE, 411 SPORTS AND ENTERTANIMENT
The 2009 Grand Slam season will conclude in the next few weeks, as tennis giants Roger Federer and Serena Williams look to defend their titles at the U.S. Open. Federer will head to the Big Apple seeking a record sixth straight U.S. Open championship. He already holds the record with five straight in the Open Era (since 1968) after beating Britain's Andy Murray in last year's final at Ashe Stadium. Serena captured her third Open title a year ago by holding off Serbian star Jelena Jankovic in the women's finale. Note: Legends Jimmy Connors and Pete Sampras also own five U.S. Open titles in the Open Era...they just didn't come in succession. What else is there left to say about Federer? The super Swiss seems to hold just about every meaningful record in the sport (as far as the men are concerned). Federer is the all-time men's leader with 15 major titles, and he's still only 28 years old. He set the mark by outlasting Andy Roddick in last month's epic Wimbledon finale, as the Basel native notched a sixth Wimby title in seven years. The regal Federer is also one of only six men to capture the career Grand Slam, which he did by nailing down that elusive first-ever French Open title back in June. Another amazing Federer record is his string of consecutive Grand Slam semifinals, which currently stands at 21. You don't have to be a tennis expert to realize that's an incredible feat. At the very least, it's a testament to his fitness, which is second to none in the history of the game. The newlywed and father of infant twins will try to win a third straight major title, and currently owns three of the four Grand Slam championships, with only the Aussie Open escaping him over the last year (actually the last two years). Serena, meanwhile, is clearly one of the all-time greats among the ladies. Like Federer, she currently owns threequarters of the women's major titles, with only the French Open crown eluding her grasp over the last year (actually the last seven years). The former top-ranked Serena is an 11-time major champ, with her first Grand Slam event title coming in New York 10 years ago, when she was a mere 17 years old. Note: In addition to her three U.S. Open titles (1999, 2002, 2008), Serena posted a runner-up finish to her big sister Venus there in 2001. Surprising Note: When Serena reached the final last year, she became the first Williams finalist at the Open since the sisters battled in their all-sibling final six years earlier. When you break down the fields, it would appear as though Federer's toughest competition in New York will come from a pair of Andys -- Murray and Roddick -- and Aussie Open champ Rafael Nadal. Murray reached his lone Grand Slam final in NYC a year ago and is always a threat to win any tournament staged on a hardcourt. The Brit had been a dominant 6-2 lifetime against Federer before the Swiss handled him in this past weekend's semifinals at the U.S. Open tune-up in Cincinnati. But even with his strong 6-3 record against Federer, the Scot has never beaten the masterful Swiss at a major. Is Murray's game big enough to claim a major? Hmm, I think so. The former world No. 1 Nadal has played very little tennis since falling off his throne at the French Open back in May. The Spanish strongman was sidelined for two months this summer, PAGE

COVER STORY as he stayed home to nurse bad knees. Nadal succumbed to 2007 U.S. Open runner-up Novak Djokovic in the other semi in Cincy last week and doesn't quite look like he's ready to challenge for his first-ever U.S. Open title. Note: Nadal has only ever reached one semifinal in New York, and that resulted in a loss at the hands of Murray last year. As a matter of fact, Nadal has reached only two quarterfinals at the Open in six trips there. Nadal is a six-time major champ, but I don't see number seven coming in NYC. Roddick seems to be in a bit of a funk after losing an opportunity to shock Federer in the Wimbledon final last month. The former top-ranked American pushed Federer to a 30-game fifth set at the All England Club, only to lose at the very end when he lost his serve for the first, and only, time that day. The 26-year-old Roddick, who captured his lone Grand Slam title in New York six long years ago, is the last man not named Federer to win it all in Flushing. Can he do it again? Roddick also reached a U.S. Open final in 2006, but lost to, who else...the Fed. Fact: The only other former men's champions, aside from Federer and Roddick, expected to be in this year's Open field are Lleyton Hewitt (2001) and Marat Safin (2000), who will probably perform in his final U.S. Open, as he expects to retire from the ATP World Tour at the end of the season. In addition to being a former champ, Hewitt is also a former U.S. Open runner-up, as he gave way to Federer in the 2004 title tilt. Serena's main competition figures to come from top-ranked Dinara Safina, Venus, and some other usual suspects like Elena Dementieva and Jankovic. The capable Dementieva, a former U.S. Open runner-up (2004) and reigning Olympic gold medalist, upset Serena in a semifinal in Toronto this past weekend. Safina is ranked No. 1 in the world and has played in three of the last six major finals, but she has played her worst tennis in these biggest of finals, and I'm guessing the New York spotlight will wind up being too much for the powerful Russian. Expect the 2008 Open semifinalist to reach the second week in Flushing, but don't expect her to break through with that first-ever major title next month. Despite her massive serve, awesome court coverage and overall power, the seven-time SEPT. 4 - 10 2009
major champion Venus hasn't won a Grand Slam title not called The Championships, Wimbledon, since the 2001 U.S. Open. She's a two-time U.S. Open champ (2000-01) and was the runner-up in the Apple back in 2002. Venus reached the three straight U.S. Open finals earlier this decade, but hasn't made a return trip since '02. Venus should reach the second week in Flushing, but another U.S. Open title just seems unlikely for the veteran star, who joined the
circuit 12 years ago. Note: Five of Venus' seven major titles have come at Wimbledon. The free-swinging Dementieva is capable of reaching any major final, but I think her nerves will get in the way of her ever hoisting a big one (Grand Slam trophy, that is). Dementieva wound up winning the title in Toronto last week, with the championship match victory coming over fellow Russian star, Maria Sharapova. The drama queen that is Jankovic had been slipping in the rankings this year, which has certainly been an off one for the Serb, but she did break through with a surprising title in Cincinnati two weeks ago. And her last trip to the U.S. Open did result in a trip to the final as well. The women's field will also feature intriguing stars like former champions Sharapova and Kim Clijsters. Sharapova is a three-time major champ, including a U.S. Open championship three years ago, but she's been in anything but WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM
top form since returning to action this season after being sidelined for several months following some 2008 shoulder surgery, which forced her to miss last year's Open. The popular Clijsters, meanwhile, retired from the WTA Tour in 2007, but returned to the circuit just this month, with her eye set on a return trip to New York. Kimmy won it all in Flushing back in 2005 and was the runner-up there to her great rival Justine Henin in 2003. Clijsters skipped the '06 Open due to an injury, and was "retired" the last two years, so the sturdy Belgian will compete in Flushing for the first time in four years next week. Can she regain her former No. 1 form? The women's field will also feature French Open champion and 2004 U.S. Open winner Svetlana Kuznetsova, but Kuznetsova has been anything but her best since running the table in Paris this past spring. Kuznetsova reached another U.S. Open final in 2007, but bowed out against the indomitable Henin. Other men's contenders could be the former Aussie Open titlist Djokovic and tall Argentine Juan Martin del Potro. Djokovic is a clear top-five-type player, but he really hasn't figured into the Grand Slam champion equation since capturing the Aussie Open at the beginning of last year. Meanwhile, the 6-foot-6 del Potro hasn't made it into a Grand Slam final yet, but he could be knocking on the door and is still only 20 years old. Watch out for the imposing South American if he can stay fresh over the two-week span. Are youngsters like Victoria Azarenka and Caroline Wozniacki among the contenders on the women's side? Azarenka, I would have to say, is a yes, while Wozniacki might have to qualify as a no at this particular moment. The hard- nosed Azarenka was a big winner in Miami earlier this season, while Wozniacki got off to a hot start this year, but has cooled off during the North American hardcourt season and is 3-4 in her last seven matches (at the time of this column). Picks: Federer and Serena to repeat (in the case of Federer, a six-peat). Sorry, but I really don't see any dark horses shaking up the world at America's Open. The '09 Open will commence Monday at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. And don't look for that late-night coverage on USA Network this year, as ESPN will begin its coverage of this great sporting event starting next week. PAGE

'HAIL MARY' BUSINESS IN THE NEWS Roger Staubach threw and Drew Pearson caught the first "Hail Mary” in sports history -but, of course, no one knew it at the time. It happened in an NFC semifinal-round game Dec. 28, 1975, in Bloomington, Minn. Dallas trailed Minnesota 14-10 with 24 seconds left. The eightpoint underdog Cowboys faced second-and-19 with 36 seconds to go when Staubach threw a game-winning, 50-yard touchdown pass to Pearson. He scored with :24 left. "The greatest play in my career has to be the ‘Hail Mary' I caught,” said Pearson, a former University of Tulsa wide receiver who will be inducted into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame on Monday night. "We went in as a tremendous underdog against a very good Minnesota Viking team.” After the game, Staubach said, "It was just a Hail Mary pass; a very, very lucky play.” The quarterback told reporters that he closed his eyes, threw the ball as hard as he could, and said a Hail Mary prayer. Since then, every last-second, pass out of desperation has been called a "Hail Mary” play. The Cowboys became NFC champions the following week, winning at Los Angeles. But they lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers 21-17 in Super Bowl X. On the "Hail Mary” play, Staubach lined up in

the shotgun formation, took the snap, pump-faked left, then pivoted to his right and threw a desperation pass to Pearson, who was covered by cornerback Nate Wright. Staubach was hit as he threw and didn't see the catch. As the football fell toward the turf, thrown a little bit short, Pearson turned and caught the ball by trapping it against his right hip at the five-yard line. He then ran into the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. "Now I'm pretty much defined by that play,” Pearson said. "It's a pretty big play in NFL history and it's still the biggest play in Dallas Cowboys history.”Almost forgotten now is what Staubach and Pearson had done two plays earlier — with Dallas facing fourth-and-17 and elimination from the playoffs. Pearson, though out of bounds, caught a 25-yard pass to keep the drive going. Officials ruled Wright had pushed Pearson out. Those two plays added to Pearson's reputation as a clutch receiver. In his 11-year NFL career he played in three Super Bowls, winning one, and seven NFC championship games. "In being part of that, sometimes I had to step out as an individual and make some plays to help the team win. And I was very fortunate to do that on a number of occasions, because I had a quarterback in Roger Staubach, and later in Danny White, who believed in me, that I could make those plays in those situations. And I had a

coach in Tom Landry who believed in me and called my number.” When Pearson signed with Tulsa, he was a quarterback from South River, N.J. He switched to receiver in his junior season and caught 33 passes for a run-oriented team. He received the TU President's Award as the team's "best spirited and most unselfish” player. He signed with Dallas as an undrafted free agent and caught 489 passes with 50 touchdowns. A three-time Pro Bowler, he was selected for the NFL All-Decade Team of the ‘70s. At Monday night's banquet he will be presented by basketball great Marques Haynes. Pearson was married to Haynes' oldest daughter, Marsha. "He's a real champ, I'll tell you that,” Haynes said of Pearson. "You talk about a guy who could be a role model for other ballplayers or other athletes or other people, period, it's Drew Pearson.” And, yes, Haynes remembers the "Hail Mary” catch. On the road with the Harlem Globetrotters, he and his wife of 33 years, Joan, watched it from an airport. "I was waiting for my wife to come in from New York,” Haynes said. "After she came in, we went back to the bar, where guys were sitting around, watching the game. Drew caught the pass and my wife jumped up and started shouting. All the guys in that bar, man, they turned around and started looking at us. I had to quiet her down. I said, "Wait a minute, girl, let's get out of here.' She was yelling "Go ahead, Drew!' and all that stuff.”

He got up and down for birdie on the par- five sixth, but a bogey on the seventh dropped him back to minus-eight and into a share of the lead with Marino.
Slocum's closing par denied a possible playoff that would have included world No. 1 Tiger Woods, Steve Stricker, who is No. 2 on the FedEx Cup points list, as well as three-time major champions Ernie Els and Padraig Harrington.
Marino went five-over par on the back nine to tumble out of contention. Slocum parred five straight from the eighth and was tied for the lead the entire time. As Marino fell down the leaderboard, Els and Stricker, who played alongside Slocum, joined the lead at minus-eight.
Slocum shot a four-under 67 Sunday to end at nineunder-par 275. Woods and Harrington also posted Sunday 67s, while Els carded a five-under 66 and Stricker shot 69. Those four shared second at minus-eight.
Els posted a bogey-free round that included a birdie on the third and back-toback birdies from the seventh and 13th. He parred his final four holes to get into the clubhouse first at minus-eight.
With the win, Slocum skyrocketed from 124th on the FedEx Cup points list to third behind Woods and Stricker.

Top 10 Hardest Hitters in NFL History 10. Charles Haley, DE A versatile defensive player, Haley began his career as a specialty outside linebacker, eventually progressing to passrusher and finally full-fledged defensive end. Haley had the reputation of being a volatile and unpredictable yet exceptionally talented and hardworking player. Haley has the distinction of being the only player in NFL history to have been on five Super Bowlwinning teams. 9. Ed Too Tall Jones DE Ed Lee "Too Tall" Jones is one of only 3 players to ever play 15 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the famed "Doomsday Defense" squad of the 1970s. Jones was given the nickname "Too Tall" due to his height, 6 feet, 9 inches tall. He attended Tennessee State University. Jones was the first overall draft choice in the 1974 NFL Draft. Jones was named All-Pro in 1981 and 1982, and played in 16 playoff games, including three Super Bowls. Jones played on three NFC champion teams and the 1978 Super Bowl winner. 8. Michael Strahan, DE He holds the NFL record for sacks in a single season with 22.5 (breaking New York Jets great Mark Gastineau's total of 22) in the 2001 season. Few defensive ends in the NFL were more feared or more dominant than Strahan from 2000 to 2005. He was named the 2001 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was a two-time NFC Defensive Player of the Year (in 2001 and 2003). Throughout the greater part of the 2004 season, Strahan was injured with a torn pectoral muscle, which limited him to only 4 sacks. He rebounded in 2005, returning to the Pro Bowl, with his protégé, Osi Umenyiora as the two combined for 26 sacks while anchoring the Giants' defense. 7. Randy White, Defensive Tackle a 6-4, 257-pound All-America defensive end at the University of Maryland in 1974, was the Dallas Cowboys' first pick and the second player selected in the 1975 National Football League Draft. For the remainder of his 14- season, 209-game NFL career, White was an outstanding anchor of the Cowboys' excellent defensive line. SEPT. 4 - 10 2009
6. Bob Lilly, Defensive Tackle was a twotime All-South West Conference pick and a consensus All-America choice at Texas Christian before the Dallas Cowboys' selected him as their first-ever draft choice in 1961. For the next 14 seasons, his play on defense was so outstanding that he became popularly known as "Mr. Cowboy." Bob starred as a defensive end in 1961 but then moved to a defensive tackle spot in his third season with even more sensational results. As a tackle, Lilly was a first-team AllNFL choice every year from 1964 through 1969, then again in 1971, and 1972. The only years he missed first-team honors was his final two seasons in the league and in 1970 when he was a second-team choice. 5. Carl Eller, Defensive End In 1964, Carl Eller, a consensus All-America with the University of Minnesota, was a firstround draft pick of both the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings and the Buffalo Bills of the then-rival American Football League. A 66, 247-pound defensive stalwart, Eller opted to stay in a familiar environment and signed with the Vikings. For the next 15 years through 1978, he was a fixture in one of pro footballs most effective defensive alignments. He finished his career with one final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 1979, having played in 225 regular season games. 4. Mean Joe Green, Defensive Tackle A 1968 consensus All-America at North Texas State, Joe Greene was Pittsburgh’s No. 1 pick in the 1969 National Football League Draft. Almost from his first game, the 6-4, 275-pounder showed the super-star talents that established him as the defensive foundation in Coach Chuck Noll's program that produced four AFC titles and four Super Bowl victories in the 1970s. Playing left tackle, Greene was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year in 1969 when he received the first of his 10 Pro Bowl invitations. He was named All-NFL five times, and earned all-conference recognition WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM
FANTASY FANTASY FOOTBALL 11 straight years from 1969 to 1979. In both 1972 and 1974, when Greene was selected as the NFL Defensive Player of the Year, Joe played a major role in his team's success. 3. Reggie White, DE Reggie White earned the nickname "The Minister of Defense" as a senior at Tennessee. White, who spent two seasons in the ill-fated United States Football League, made a memorable debut in the National Football League with the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 4 of the 1985 season. He collected 2.5 sacks, and deflected a pass that was intercepted and returned for touchdown. Despite the fact he played in only 13 games that season, White tied for the team lead with 13 sacks and was named the NFL's Defensive Rookie of the Year. The following season, White picked up 18 more sacks to earn his first of an astounding 13 straight Pro Bowl trips. 2. Alan Page, DT a consensus All-America at Notre Dame in 1966, was the Minnesota Vikings' second pick in the first round of the first combined AFL-NFL draft in 1967. Although he had played defensive end in college, he was moved to defensive tackle with the Vikings. Page won the starting defensive right tackle job in the fourth game of his rookie season and he remained a starter for the rest of his career. Alan excelled with the Vikings for 11 seasons and six games into the 1978 campaign, when he was waived. The Chicago Bears quickly signed him and he moved into the starting lineup without missing a game. 1. David “Deacon” Jones Jones won unanimous all-league honors six straight years from 1965 through 1970. He also played in seven straight Pro Bowls, 19651971, and was selected to an eighth in 1973. In both 1967 and 1968, he was chosen the top defensive player in the NFL by one major news service. In 1972, Jones was included in a multiplayer trade with the San Diego Chargers. He was an instant success with his new team, leading all Chargers' defensive linemen in tackles and winning a berth on the AFC Pro Bowl squad. He also was named San Diego's defensive captain. He concluded his career with the Washington Redskins in 1974. The extremely durable and dedicated Jones missed just five games of a possible 196 regular-season encounters in 14 NFL campaigns. PAGE

Jamie Foxx says he always wanted to be a singer but his comedy career took off first. "It all has to do with timing," he said in a recent telephone interview. "I have been blessed to have been in the right places at the right times. And I'm glad the comedy career came first because breaking into music is tough now." Foxx, who brings his 50-city "Blame It" tour to the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center on Monday night, mixes comedy and music on stage. "In between the songs, there will be some visitors like Ray Charles and even the president of the United States," he said, slipping into an impression of Barack Obama. "I did it in front of him on Inauguration Day. I was a little nervous, but he liked it." Foxx also pays tribute to Prince, Michael Jackson and Charles. That one is expected because Foxx won the best actor Oscar for his portrayal of the legendary soul singer in the 2004 movie "Ray." PAGE

"When Ray Charles schooled me on the piano, he said 'all the notes are down there under your fingers, you've just got to find the right ones' and that applies to life, too," Foxx said. Foxx's own music is showcased. The tour promotes his "Intuition" album, including "Blame It," the Auto-Tune club hit about blaming a sexual fling on too much alcohol. The hip-hop song set a record for 14 weeks at No. 1 on the Urban Mainstream chart. Foxx said his audiences have been 70 percent women and many of them are on their feet singing along when he performs "She Got Her Own." "It's about a woman being independent, having her own money and her own life and not worrying about a man," he said. The 41-year-old entertainer's next film is a serious role in "Law Abiding Citizen," a thriller about a sociopath who orchestrates murders from inside his jail cell. It opens in October. Foxx also has joined the cast of director Garry Marshall's romantic comedy "Valentine's Day" and is teaming up with Martin Lawrence for "Skank Robbers," a comedy featuring characters (Wanda and Sheneneh) that they created on "In Living Color." Lawrence says as a kid growing up in a small community near Dallas, he would watch "The Tonight Show" with his family because his bedroom had the only TV in the house. "I would see comedians and take all their jokes to school," he said. Born Eric Marion Bishop, he was playing piano by age 5. As a teen he sang in the church choir and with local bands. He went to Alliant University in California on a classical piano scholarship and changed his name to Jamie Foxx after success in comedy clubs. "I was in the right place to get WWW.411SPORTSNEWS.COM
on TV with 'In Living Color,'" he said. "And I was in the right place to meet Oliver Stone and be cast in 'Any Given Sunday,' which led to more film roles. And I was in the right place when I meet Kanye West at a party and he sparked my interest in getting back to music. ... I try to stay grounded and thank God for all that has happened in my life." Early life Foxx was born Eric Marlon Bishop on December 13, 1967, in Terrell, Texas. He is the son of Louise Annette Talley Dixson and Darrell Bishop. Bishop was a stock broker who changed his name to Shahid Abdula after converting to Islam. Foxx was abandoned seven months after birth and was raised in Terrell by his mother's adoptive parents, Estelle and Mark Talley. Terrell was a racially segregated community at the time. He had a strict Baptist upbringing. Foxx began piano lessons at the age of five by his grandmother's orders. As a teenager, he was a part-time pianist and choir leader in Terrell's New Hope Baptist Church. Foxx attended Terrell High School, where he received top grades, played basketball and football as quarterback, and had an ambition to play for the Dallas Cowboys. He was the first player in the school's history to pass for more than 1,000 yards. He also sang in a band called Leather and Lace. After completing high school, Foxx received a scholarship to United States International University, where he studied classical music and composition. He has often cited his adoptive grandmother's influence on his life. Early career and In Living Color

He chose his surname as a tribute to comedian Redd Foxx. Foxx joined the cast of In Living Color in 1991 and subsequently had a recurring role in the comedy-drama sitcom Roc. Film career Foxx's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Foxx made his film debut in the 1997 comedy, Booty Call. His first dramatic role came in Oliver Stone's 1999 film Any Given Sunday, where he played a heavypartying American football player. He was cast in the role in part because of his background as a football player. Foxx has since evolved into a respected dramatic actor. Following Any Given Sunday, Foxx was featured as taxi driver Max Durocher in the film Collateral alongside Tom Cruise, for which he received outstanding reviews and a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. His standout performance, however, was his portrayal of Ray Charles in the biopic Ray (2004), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor and the BAFTA Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role. Foxx is the second male, and the first African American, in history to receive two acting Oscar nominations in the same year for two different movies, Collateral and Ray. The only other male actor to achieve this was Al Pacino. In 2005, Foxx was invited to join the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Following this success, Foxx appeared in three more movies: Jarhead, Miami Vice, and Dreamgirls which were hits at the box office and lifted Foxx even higher as a bankable star in Hollywood. 2007 brought him the lead role in the film The Kingdom, opposite Chris Cooper, Jennifer Garner and Ashraf Barhom. The song reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, as well as number three on the UK singles chart. Foxx's second collaboration with Kanye West, "Gold Digger", in which he sang the "I Got a Woman" Ray Charles-influenced hook, went straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100, and remained there for 10 weeks. In 2005, Foxx was featured on the single "Georgia" by Atlanta rappers Ludacris and Field Mob. The song sampled Ray Charles' hit "Georgia on My Mind". Foxx released his second studio album, Unpredictable, in December 2005. It debuted at number two, selling 598,000 copies in its first week. The following week, the album rose to number one, selling 200,000 copies. The album has sold 1.98 million copies in the United States and was certified double Platinum by the RIAA. The album also charted in the UK Albums Chart, where it peaked at number nine. The song peaked inside the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and also made the UK top 20 singles chart. The second US single from the album was "DJ Play A Love Song", which reunited Foxx with Twista. In the UK, however, the second single was "Extravaganza", which saw Foxx once again collaborate with Kanye West. He was not, however, featured in the song's music video. At the 2006 Black Entertainment Television (BET) Awards, Foxx won Best Duet/Collaboration with Kanye West for "Gold Digger" and Video of the Year for the same video. Kanye's video tied with Mary J. Blige's (Be Without You) for Video of the year. On December 8, 2006, Foxx received 4 Grammy nominations, which included Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals for Love Changes feat Mary J. Blige, Best R&B Album for Unpredictable, Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for Georgia by Ludacris & Field Mob feat Jamie Foxx and Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for Unpredictable feat Ludacris. On January 22, 2007, Foxx was on Sirius Satellite Radio, announcing his new channel, The Foxxhole. The channel features comedy and music primarily by African-American performers, and features much of Fox's own material as well. Foxx's own radio talk show, The Jamie Foxx Show airs Friday evenings on The Foxxhole, and features Johnny Mack, Speedy, Claudia Jordan, The Poetess, and Lewis Dix as his co-hosts. Guests include popular musicians, actors, and fellow comedians. He recorded a song with country superstars Rascal Flatts entitled "She Goes All The Way" for their album, Still Feels Good. Foxx also did background vocals for artist/songwriter Tank. He and The-Dream are featured on Plies' "Please Excuse My Hands". He also appeared on the remix of Ne-Yo's "Miss Independent", titled "She Got Her Own". The track also features Fabolous. Foxx then collaborated with rapper The Game on the song "Around The World".

HE SAY/ SHE SAY If you were Steve McNair's wife, what would you do? What happens when you lose a loved one and then you find out about a secret life of betrayal and infidelity? This is not to bash Steve McNair but it unlocks feelings most of us have never had to deal with. I tried to picture being a husband that lost his wife and found out she was secretly involved with a couple of guys or moonlighting as a escort but my true feelings were off because she's still alive. It's hard when you think you have something and then find out it's just camouflage for what's real. Then you put a death in the mix, what the hell are you supposed to think? Do you section off your mind to celebrate the good or put those previous atrocities to the side and just celebrate? He Says... The funny thing Brian is that McNair is considered a good guy. His personality as a giving man and down to earth person carried over into his dark side (infidelity). He was one of those guys that couldn't put a side woman in her place. He couldn't hurt their feelings so he misled them into believing "potential". I personally have a hard time believing his wife didn't know, but in the case that she didn't, I absolutely believe she has a right to not even show up for the funeral. She Says... My heart has gone out to that woman..... I think publicly I would put on the face of confidence and strength, but behind close doors, I would cuss, break up pics, kick the cat...... He Says... I have many friends that are, and were professional athletes, so I understand a lot of the stuff that goes on behind the scenes. This is the very reason I've reserved judgement in this case. Just as an example, lot of times these wives are there for the children and publicity's sake, so they tolerate certain infidelities as long as they are discreet. This one turned up horribly wrong. I suspect she will remain quiet, and try to shield her family from the drama and speculation. I know there will be many that judge and condemn the man, but if you don't understand what was going on in that house, the only thing you can do is speculate. JMHO. She Says... What would I do if I was her? Cash the insurance checks, sell the current home. Move to where I want to live and KEEP IT MOVING. He Says... we have no clue as to what their relationship was like prior to his passing. of course she will tell the media she knew nothing about the affair, because if she told them she did, it would open her up to criticism. but one problem i see in the comparison is we (average joes) often try to compare our lives with celebrities. we dont know if she was with him for love or for fame and riches. we dont know if she was doing her dirt on the side when he was away from home for 8 months out of the year. they say money cant buy happiness... well tell that to michael jordans wife. She Says... If you show me a husband that is bold enough to vacation with a woman, be photgraphed, buy her a car AND put his name on the title, bail her out of jail and sign HIS NAME, spend multiple nights away from home, and possibly have more than one mistress...then I will show you a wife that knew the character of her husband. This "side" may have been hidden from fans, but not from her.

HE SAY/ SHE SAY We dont know if Mechelle wanted the marriage to work or wanted him away. I am sure she is grieving as she controls his estate....and just keeps living! He Says... I happen to know both sides of the story. Some of these cats marry their High School & College sweethearts. They go through the struggle of trying to gain a higher education together. They are for the most part, in it for better of for worse. That large payday at the end of the tunnel is the result of hard work and dedication. Others pick their loves up from the local 7-11 or the latest rap video shoot. Point is, you can't lump all into one. It isn't always about the money. Sometimes it is, sometimes it isn't. One other point I feel like I need to make is that these particular points don't really fit into this particular thread. Unless you knew Steve & Mechelle, opinions are merely speculation. Mechelle is going through a considerable amount of pain, regardless of what their marital situation was. To question her motives or mindset is fruitless and in bad taste. She Says... I would be happy as hell someone got rid of him. Imagine the public humilation this woman was so desperately trying to avoid. The times her husband was away from her...because of other warm body(ies). She knew, but was probably hopeless of doing anything to save her public shame and ultimately her marriage, whateva he was missing at home he should now have. Time away from his wife and children. Deep down inside women and even men know when someone isnt being honest or faithful. I am sure she had a feeling it was just confirmed when it came out this way. What a terrible way of knowing the truth now she can't kick his tail and it's a double hurt. He Says... I don't know that Steve McNairs wife needs to do (ANYTHING)?? What could she possibly do besides tell her sons that there was more to their father than the few months spent with that chica? Whatever Steve did is what HE did, and his entire legacy isn't determined by the last couple months spent on this earth. I thought it was classy of her not to publicly address the issue... What for? For all we know this chica may have twisted their relationship into being something that it wasn't. Steve may have went there to clear things up ... hmmmm.. Note to self.... Don't ever cancel an unstable chica's contract and then go to sleep with her right there... We need to add that to the Man Rules.. She Says... It's easy to say woulda, shoulda, coulda when your feet aren't in those shoes. Not many of us will ever have to live thru this humiliation. My heart goes out to this woman AND her children. The human, angry, pissed wife side of me says: leave his ass at the morgue. He wouldn't even get a funeral. His mama better use the policy she had in place and his team mates better pass the helmet/hat and get enough up to burry him...otherwise the state would have to eat this cost. The mother in me would: give him the minimal burial because after all - he is my children's father I really wouldn't give a rats ass about what the public had to say about me or think of me - because she'll have to deal with this shyt even after all the flower bringing and slow song singing is over. Yes, I think she knew something was up but decided to turn the other cheek. We can all speculate - but in the end nobody knows what really went on behind all the closed doors and there were plenty. The divorce was finalized in 1978 after 16 years, and Tina was not shy talking about her experience, penning a book, 'I, Tina,' which was later turned into the film, 'What's Love Got To Do With It?' Tina's strength is noteworthy as she managed to maintain and attain her greatest success ever, with the release of her major label debut solo project, 'Private Dancer,' which would sell over 20 million copies. 17) Three of Hip-Hop's Most Prominent Rapstresses Suddenly go to Prison
Conspiracy and perjury for lying to a grand jury, violating probation for a fight with two manicurists and shooting a friend in the stomach over $5,000 are the crimes that landed hip-hop's biggest rapstresses in the slammer. What's surprising is how closely the prison sentences followed each other as well as the fact that these women were even going to prison in the first place. It was almost surreal to see them go, despite their often gritty lyrics, because for the most part you knew they were not living the lives they sometimes bragged about. 16) Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Burns Down Andre Rison's Home In 1994, the late Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes made headlines when she burned down the mansion of her boyfriend and Atlanta Falcons star, Andre Rison. The incident took place when Lopes lit Rison's sneakers on fire due to an argument the two had at the time. Not only did the fire cost Rison to lose his multi-million dollar home, but it landed Lopes at a halfway house for therapy with five years probation. 15) Whitney Houston Marries Bobby Brown The phrase 'A Match Made In Heaven' didn't apply to Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown when they tied the knot in 1992. Many people were in fact shocked that the two were dating in the late 1980s when Houston was at the height of her career gaining crossover success, while Brown maintained a bad boy image. Years later after drug use, reality shows, and disastrous TV appearances, the couple would go on to divorce in 2007, after 15 years of marriage. 14) Curtis Mayfield is Paralyzed Anybody who was anybody that lived in the '60s

and '70s knew of Curtis Mayfield and had heard his sound. Curtis was a pioneer of funk and politically conscience music in the African American community and help spread the black power music through his heavy songs. In 1990, Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down when lighting equipment concert fell on him during a concert, making recording and performing difficult for one who had expressed so much through music. In February of 1998 Curtis had to have his right leg amputated due to diabetes. This maestro of song passed on December 26th, 1999, the same year that he was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. 13) Snoop Dogg is Aquited on His Murder Charges The recording and release of Snoop Dogg's debut album 'Doggystyle' was met with both criticallyacclaimed success and controversy. While the album shot to the top of the charts Snoop along with his bodyguard, McKinley Lee were arrested in connection with the death of rival gang member Phillip Woldermarian. Woldermarian was reportedly killed in a shootout between other rival gangs. The two were tried and acquitted in 1996. 12) Rapper Shyne Takes the Fall for Diddy Sean "Diddy" Combs' protĂŠgĂŠ Shyne (born Jamal Barrow) gained public notoriety with his involvement in the 1999 Club New York incident. The rapper allegedly opened fire in response to a gang member who attempted to shoot Combs in the club. Barrow's gunshots resulted in a bystander getting hit in the face with plaster from the club's ceiling. On June 1, 2001 Combs and his bodyguard Anthony "Wolf" Jones were acquitted of all charges, leaving Shyne to serve 10 years in prison for first-degree assault and reckless endangerment. 11) Jam Master Jay Gets Killed in His Recording Studio In 2002, when Jason "Jam Master Jay" Mizell was killed, it was one of the most unexpected moments in hip-hop. No one expected one of the founders of the legendary hip-hop pioneers, Run-DMC, to be taken away so suddenly or so violently. Along with the other members, Run and DMC, Jay would popularize Adidas and forever ingrain them into the culture. He was only 37 and the motive for the crime apparently had something to do with his

Networking Spot Light on Shocking Moments involvement with the rapper 50 Cent. Regardless of the fact, his memory lives on through the many rappers who were influenced by him. 10) Rick James and His Girlfriend Hold a Woman Hostage for Six Days and Burn Her with a Crack Pipe Long before his career was resuscitated by Charlie Murphy's sketches on 'The Chappelle Show,' Rick James had reached the pinnacles of stardom, selling records, getting groupies and heavily using drugs. James' infamy with drugs was capitulated in 1991, when he and future wife, Tanya Hijazi were accused of holding a young woman hostage for up to six days, tying her up, forcing her to perform sexual acts, and burning her legs and abdomen with a hot end of a crack cocaine pipe during a week long cocaine binge. In 1993, James was said to have assaulted another woman, music executive Mary Sauger, at the St. James Club and Hotel in West Hollywood. She claims she met James and Hijazi for a business meeting, but says that the two kidnapped and beat her over a 20-hour period. Needless to say, he was imprisoned for two years and lost a $2 million civil suit. 9) Kanye West Goes on TV and Denounces George Bush No stranger to controversy, Kanye West set off a venerable firestorm when he went on television during a live telethon and denounced the state of poverty in the United States as well as the disregard George Bush had for Katrinans, stating the now infamous line, "George Bush does not care about black people." Although his microphone was cut, the message was still received by much of America, loud and clear. 8) Gerald Levert and His Brother Sean Suddenly Die The sons of O'Jays lead singer Eddie Levert, Gerald and Sean had a certain pedigree about them. They were both musically inclined and at one time even teamed up with their friend Marc Gordon to form the group Levert. Each enjoyed successful solo careers with Gerald's star rising slightly higher. On November 10, 2006, Gerald was found dead at the age of 40, in his Newbury home when a cousin tried to wake him. The cause of death was ruled an accidental overdose. Two years later, Sean Levert would unfortunately follow as he fell ill

and died in prison, just a week into a year-long sentence for failing to pay child support. Sadly Eddie was forced to bury both his sons within only a two-year span. 7) Ice-T Records Cop Killer During a time when police brutality was p u b l i c l y recognized due to the 1991 Rodney King beating, Ice-T's group Body Count released 'Cop Killer.' The controversial song appeared on the group's self-titled debut album in 1992 causing an uproar within the justice system. Police forces from across the U.S. along with Vice President Dan Quayle and President Bush launched a campaign to force Body Count's label, Warner Bros. Records, to pull the album from stores. The turmoil resulted in Ice-T removing the song from the record and replacing it with 'Freedom of Speech.' 6) Marvin Gaye is Shot and Killed by His Father To say that Marvin Gaye was iconic, would be an understatement; he helped define black music over several decades. Many of his songs are as ubiquitous today as they were in the '60s, '70s, and '80s with messages that remain relevant. Following the death of singing companion, Tammi Terrell , Gaye would eventually go into seclusion and move into his father's home. Gaye and his father, a clergyman, did not get along and on April 1, 1984, Marvin Gaye Sr. shot and killed his son at 44 years of age. 5) Aaliyah and Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes Die Tragically These two will always be paired together for the proximity and timing of their tragic and unfortunate deaths. When news broke that Aaliyah's plane had crashed in 2001, it was saddening given her potential -- she was only 22

years of age, a multi-platinum artist and getting acting roles. Lisa, was at times considered the most creative member within TLC and she helped propel them to sell over 22 million albums. She died a year later in 2002, when a car she was driving sped out of control and crashed only killing her, despite the fact that there were other passengers in the car. 4) Michael Jackson... being Michael Jackson The king of pop, over the last several decades, has gone to no end to prove to the world just strange he can be. And it's pretty much a one man race as he seems to constantly up the ante. One of his more unfortunate moments came during the filming of a 1984 Pepsi commercial when the pyrotechnics accidentally set his hair on fire. Jackson also became notorious for bleaching his skin to combat Vitilligo (with many skeptics in the black community thinking this excuse was a lie) and holding his baby Blanket out of the window for no apparent reason. 3) Eazy-E Dies of AIDS As the founder of N.W.A., Eazy-E helped usher in the era of West Coast gangster rap that would grip the country for much of the early to mid-90's. His record label, Ruthless Records, would find tremendous success for several years until label mates Dr. Dre and Ice Cube jumped ship over what they deemed as irreconcilable financial issues. In March 1995, Eazy-E checked himself into Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles with what he thought was bronchitis. It was soon discovered that he instead had AIDS and was already in the advance stages. And so, just like that Eazy-E, became a victim of a disease that people were just beginning to get a grasp of. He would die just 10 days later on March 20. 2) Tupac and Biggie are Shot and Killed in the East Coast/West Coast Feud Few things have shaken up black music as much as the death to these two prolific rappers. Their brash and brazen bravado defined the era. On the night of November 30, 1994, Shakur was shot five times and robbed after entering the lobby of the Quad Recording Studios in Manhattan. He would later accuse Sean Combs, Andre Harrell, and Biggie Smalls - whom he saw after the shooting - of setting him up. This incident would help create an volcanic East Coast/West Coast "beef" that would last until each of them was dead. On September 7, 1996 Tupac was shot numerous times and on September 13, died of internal bleeding. Just a year later Biggie Smalls was killed on March 9, after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds. 1) Michael Jackson dies

THE URBAN EXPERIMENT Slocum rolled in a four-foot birdie try on 13 to move to minus-nine. That came moments after Stricker made a five-footer for birdie. Those two were one up, but Stricker fell back with a bogey on 15. Stricker pitched his approach within two feet at the 16th and tapped in for birdie to reclaim a piece of the lead. As Slocum parred four in a row from the 14th to remain at minus-nine, Woods started to make his move.

enough putts on these greens all week." So it came down to Slocum and Stricker at the last. Both players found fairway bunkers off the tee. Slocum pitched his down the fairway to 65 yards. Stricker tried to go for the green, but hit the lip of the bunker. Stricker's ball stopped in the fairway 70 yards from
He faltered to a bogey on the fourth, but flew up the leaderboard with three birdies in a four-hole span from the fifth. Woods drained an 11-footer for birdie on 14, then kicked in a three-foot birdie putt on 16 to get within one of the lead.
Stricker, like Woods, missed on the left edge to give Slocum his third PGA Tour title. "I knew par would probably be a good score [on 18]. Obviously, when I hit the drive I was a little concerned," admitted Slocum. "I putted beautifully all week so if I just gave myself a chance, I felt like I can make one. "That one goes in from 20, 25 feet. It was beautiful." Fredrik Jacobson (71) and Nick Watney (67) shared sixth place at seven-under- par 277. Webb Simpson took eighth at minus-six after closing with a 72.
At the 17th, Woods' 20-foot birdie effort slid by the right edge. Woods dropped his approach within seven feet at the last, but his birdie putt missed the hole left. "I just misread that one," said Woods of his putt at the 18th. "That's the way it goes. I hit the ball well all week and to putt as poorly as I did all week and still have a chance on the last hole, says something about my ball- striking. Unfortunately I didn't make
