DJ DES MITCHELL

There are very few DJs living on the island of Mallorca that have solidified a place in the Balearics club culture hall of fame for their contribution to the industry. Des Mitchell has certainly earned that and is wearing the t-shirt to prove it. Groomed and nurtured at BBC Pebble Mill studios at the age of twenty-two, Des Mitchell has spent a lifetime in music and even managed to score a UK Top 5 dance hit with “Welcome (To the Dance)” which he recorded and produced, inspired by watching his peers spinning their own tunes whilst championing many groundbreaking music artists on dance floors all over the world. Holding one of the longest DJ residencies known, Des started 8 | CELEBRITY

DJing at BCM in 1989 and is still rocking the DJ pit at this legendary, dare I say the word, discotheque, which has recently had a complete revamp and next level refurbishment, and is ready to re-open its doors anytime soon. Touring the world and playing to large crowds is a DJ’s dream, and when you add a yearly residency on the beautiful resort of the Maldives to your diary, I guess that is considered the stars and stripes of mastering your craft. Des has travelled the globe in pursuit of musical happiness and states that his nine-month stint for Avex records super club “Velfarre” in Japan was a life changer and a country he says he could easily retire

to. Music doesn’t stop with Des within his family, his niece Jamelia, internationally known for her hit song “Superstar” and the song penned by Coldplay “See It in A Boy’s Eyes” has made a huge impact on the British pop charts and kept the family legacy very much alive. The clubbing industry doesn’t seem to have left too many scars on Mitchell, physically or mentally, his enthusiasm amplifies a just starting out and ready for action approach, it’s really quite refreshing to witness. I guess when you do it for the love of the music, it remains a joy rather than a burden. You can catch Des Mitchell at one of his residencies on the island and he is also

available for private bookings. He is an allround DJ and crowd-pleaser when selecting the sounds as I recently experienced firsthand at a private event, and the crowd were nothing short of satisfied.

STRICTLY STAR TALKS LOCKDOWN AND HIS NEW LIFE IN MALLORCA! Strictly Come Dancing star Brendan Cole made the permanent move to Mallorca to start a new life with his wife and two children just a day before Spain went into lockdown, and after a year of strict restrictions are now able to fully immerse themselves in Spanish life. By Terenia Taras

Throughout lockdown Brendan found himself without work and their children unable to start school and nursery but he and wife Zoe remained undeterred from their dream to start a new life on the island. “One of the worst things for me over the last year or so has been the unknown of not knowing where everything was going, and I have hated not working. This last year of not working has been kind of mind blowing, what it does to you, said Brendan. “From the moment I left school at sixteen I’ve worked constantly and barely had two months off at any one time. So, to go from that to fourteen months of not having any actual physical work has been just bizarre. “You lose a sense of self-worth. I didn’t ever think that was possible because I consider myself mentally strong, nothing really fazes me ever.” Brendan started dancing at the age of seven in Christchurch, New Zealand, where he grew up with his brother and sister. He moved to England at the age of eighteen to pursue his dancing career and after several years working on building sites and the odd office job, has worked in the entertainment industry ever since. Without work, Brendan focused on his family life and became a self-confessed school-run mum. “With the governments stopping the television and entertainment industry from existing, my life definitely slowed down. My days consisted of doing the school drop-off, and household chores. I’d drop the children, say hello to the other mum’s and dad’s and then I’d go home and do the garden or paint the house to then down tools and do the school run again.

12 | CELEBRITY

“It was just insane and a forced situation, rather than a choice. I’d always envisaged that at one point I’d go, you know what, I’ve had enough of this working malarkey and dancing around like a lunatic. But to have that taken away without a say is outrageous. The fact someone else can stop you from doing something was quite hard for me to get my head around.

“I do think it’s absolutely outrageous that livelihoods can be taken away so easily, without a say or any financial help. So many people, particularly in certain industries, have been completely ruined financially. It’s very sad.” Brendan, Zoe and their two children, aged eight and three, live in their villa that they’ve owned for the last five years in the North of

the island where they remained throughout lockdown. “My wife’s family are in the UK and my family are in New Zealand. I’m used to being away from my extended family, but I think for Zoe and her family it’s been tricky as they’ve not seen each other for such a long time, something many people are experiencing. “It’s especially hard for the elderly. My wife’s father in particular needs that personal connection, so it was difficult deciding to go and live in a different country and how that was going to affect everyone. “Ultimately you’ve got to do what’s right for your family. But who knew we’d be living with the restrictions for such a long time? It’s unheard of and in my opinion is rather aggressive.” The Cole’s moved to Mallorca from a pretty little village in Buckinghamshire and have finally been able to enroll their children in school and nursery in Mallorca. “We’re very lucky because we’ve not been stuck in a flat where we can’t be outside. The fact that the children weren’t allowed to leave the property was tough for them because they weren’t used to that, but a lot of people had it much worse. We like most, tried to do the right thing and follow the rules as the unknown unfolded. It seemed like the best thing to do, and we were lucky enough to have outside space.”

my family’s future and when work starts again, all of those ambitions that we had been saving for will have to start from scratch. It feels like we’ve all been put back 5 - 10 years financially. But as I said, I am one of the lucky ones, most of my colleagues in the theatre or performance industry live day-to-day. They’re literally waiting for their paycheck and spend it and of course there’s no furlough or financial help for them. It’s disgusting! “Like everyone, I still have bills and my mortgages to pay. The banks still want their money regardless of whether I, or any other person, has an income or not. “Now as we are now into summer, finally, in the last month things have started to happen on the work front. I’ve got several exciting things happening in the UK. But over the past fourteen months it’s been very quiet and that has been tough. “Exciting times now ahead, but until governments change their stance on the industry it’s still months away before I can properly plan my work. On the bright side, this family time has been amazing and having a full year to appreciate them is something to cherish.”

What are three of your favourite things in Mallorca? Cycling. The views are breath-taking and cycling Sa Colobra was an achievement. I love Deia and Formentor has a beautiful beach. Favourite restaurant in Mallorca? Sa Farinera Camping at Glastonbury or an open-air concert with Andrea Bocelli? Andrea Bocelli all day long, I’m too old for the other. Saying that, I’d probably love Glastonbury with the boys. If you weren’t a dancer what line of work would you be in? I’d probably still be in the building trade which is what I first did when I left school. Favourite place in Spain? I only really know Mallorca so it has to be here Kylie Minogue or Rita Ora as a dance partner? Rita Ora

Brendan is planning to return to the UK for work shortly and as with the majority of people the family finances also took a hit, with no work and having to rely on savings. “That’s the other thing about taking people’s livelihoods away after a year of not working. If you earn a certain amount, you generally spend that certain amount. The bills continue and so you end up having to go through every bit of money you’ve saved and money that is normally earmarked for your next ambition or milestone. “I’m very lucky in many ways as I did have savings and my business has done well for the past 20 years but those savings were for CELEBRITY | 13

SIMON’S BAR A sophisticated culinary experience in Alaró Tucked in a side street in the picturesque calles of Alaró, Simon’s bar has quickly established itself as a popular bar with locals and expats alike, and for very good reason. Invited to take part in their first chef’s table experience, I threw on a shirt, scooped up my mother as my dining partner and headed to this friendly bar to see first-hand what all of the fuss was about. By Ben Mulvey

Arriving at Simon’s Bar, you could easily think you were arriving at an Italian bistro in Milan and upon entering, the speakeasy-style decor is as warm and inviting as it is quirky and fascinating. Brass fixtures, muted colours and an eclectic mix of paintings and objet d’art guide your eyes around the room to take it all in. As our fellow diners arrived, conversations and welcome drinks flowed before we were escorted upstairs to the private dining room. This space is beautifully decorated, very welcoming and feels like being in a private home with a large open cooking space and a long, beautifully laid table. From Italy, Simon was quick to crack open the Italian wines and prosecco, and rather reluctantly, a French white - all of which were divine. Launching into the food, we were served a creamy aubergine dip with red peppers, radish and garlic to keep us quiet while the first course of avocado and cucumber gazpacho was served. This dish was perfect for the warmer months refreshing, zingy and packed with flavour. Next up, the most enormous piece of fresh tuna was carved at the cooking station and served with Japanese algae. The texture of the fish was light yet meaty and the flavours were a true taste explosion. As we got to know our hosts and fellow diners over a few more bottles of wine, Marion told us about her plans for this space and Simon filled the room with the delicious smells coming from the large pans bubbling on the stove. Our main course hailed from Simon’s homeland of Italy - a huge bowl of Spaghetti Frutti di Mare. Fresh crab, clams, and cuttlefish were the focus of this dish with a delicate tomato sauce and all served over al dente spaghetti that Simon proudly emphasised to us was imported straight from Italy! The whole dish was a triumph and every plate was gratefully devoured by all of the very satisfied guests. After loosening the top button of my shorts to make room, a superb cherry pie made by Marion was served to conclude our dining experience. Marion and Simon are the most gracious and

friendly of hosts and make everyone feel at home and relaxed which encouraged a lot of laughter and chat from everyone at the table during our visit. In fact, we all enjoyed it so much that this group of relative strangers have all booked to go back in September and meet again! This fine-dining experience is one-of-a-kind, especially in Alaró and is available for private hire for cooking classes and workshops and guests can choose to bring along a guest chef and their own menus. The ethos of Simon’s Bar is simple - feel at home and enjoy fabulous food and amazing company. Register online at w ww.simonsthebar.com or email privatecookmallorca@gmail.com.

PALMA INTERNATIONAL BOAT SHOW Palma International Boat Show and the Palma Superyacht Show returned for 2021 after a year-long absence due to the pandemic with plenty of fanfare and eager industry professionals and boat owners in attendance. By Ben Mulvey

Every year the Palma International Boat Show is one of the most anticipated events on the calendar with the yachting community coming together to meet, mingle and exhibit and curious residents popping in to get up close and personal with some of the most impressive yachts in the world. In 2020 the show was cancelled due to the pandemic so this year there was a lot riding on the event being a success. The event was organised by the Institute for Business Innovation of the Balearic Islands (IDI), headed by the Ministry of Energy Transition, Productive Sectors and Democratic Memory, and the Balearic Yacht Brokers Association (BYBA). With all COVID procedures and guidelines 16 | CELEBRITY

in place, over 16,000 people attended the event over the four days proving that the yachting industry is still very much in full swing. Exhibitors rolled out the red carpet, often literally, to showcase their products and services, boats were polished and detailed within an inch of their lives and the Marc Fosh Lounge was full of yacht captains, business owners and industry professionals who were glad to finally reunite and share their stories from the previous, often difficult, 18 months. With 227 exhibitors and 185 boats spread out over the 80,000 square metre event, the show was as big as ever and even the rain couldn’t put a dampener on the atmosphere.

This year the event was partnered with the Balearic Yacht Show, the first hybrid event of its kind with online conferences and meetings held on their platform for those businesses and attendees that couldn’t physically make the show. Overall the event was a success and it was great to see the people from the yachting industry back and thriving and it has been confirmed that some deals were negotiated throughout the event and some deals have already closed. Hopefully, next year the show will be back and bigger than ever and the photos will have lots of smiling faces as usual and not a mask in sight!

Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop Our friends at the Cala Nova Cancer Charity Shop have been busy working hard to help those in need on the island, even in these difficult times. Angela and the team have managed to donate over €30,000 euros to their chosen charities including AECC, ASPANOB, The Cancer Support Group and DIME which is incredible given that many businesses are struggling at the moment. The shop depends on the donations that are given in the form of clothes, furniture and bric-a-brac by residents and tourists in Mallorca. The volunteers work in the shop every morning at the moment and hope to be there even longer once normality resumes. Volunteers are always gratefully received to help in the shop and sort through the donations and serve the steady stream of customers hoping to scoop up a bargain. It’s important to point out that all proceeds from the shop go directly to the charities with only small overheads paid for separately.A new local has now been acquired at Juan Miró 360 near the main shop which will mainly sell furniture and home items leaving the other shop to sell more clothes, toys and books. To donate items, please pass by the shop on Avenida Joan Miro, 354 in San Agustin between 10 am - 2 pm from Monday to Saturday. RHOC - A Catch-Up With TV’s Hardest Working Couple A quick chat with our friends Dr Martin and Hanna Kinsella is enough to make anyone feel tired - do they ever stop?! This couple is on our screens, making us all look and feel better with their upcoming projects, working hard in their respective careers, and raising their gorgeous little man, Max, and I recently spoke to them to hear all about it.

By Ben Mulvey

As Martin jumps into an Uber, we snatch a few minutes to talk about what they have been up to and catch up after what feels like forever. “It’s all been a bit crazy….we are just so busy”, Martin tells me. And it is no surprise! When they are not running around after a bouncing baby boy, Martin is seeing his patients, launching two new businesses and keeping up-to-date with his increasing workload, while Hanna is working hard on the same businesses, being a fabulous mum to Max, and filming for the upcoming series of Real Housewives of Cheshire. So do they ever get a break? Finally, after months of toing and froing, the family managed to escape for a few days to our neighbouring Ibiza. “We always come to Mallorca to see our friends and family but we needed a break from work and to spend time as a family and really wanted to take Max on his first 18 | CELEBRITY

family holiday. If we had come to Mallorca, I’d have ended up working so Ibiza was the best solution”, says Martin. Martin and Hanna are currently working on their own, doctor-approved, concise, luxury anti-ageing skincare line with three bespoke products due to hit the market on the first of November. Celebrity Magazine will fill you in on all of the details closer to the time! Not satisfied with launching one business, Hanna is busy working on her Icy Bear Dental product range which is going from strength to strength and the launch was featured on RHOC earlier this year. With two new businesses already bubbling away, Martin & Hanna have also made the bold move to launch an online hormone clinic in October with the aim of making hormone treatments more accessible around the world. Aside from the blood tests and exams, everything is handled online with the help of the doctors who offer a bespoke and

professional consultation before prescribing and sending the hormone treatments that are required. With all this happening, the next series of Real Housewives of Cheshire is due to hit our screens later this year on ITV and Hanna is busy filming - she tells me that there are a few surprises in store. “This series is going to be different as we can see each other, with distancing etc...whereas last time much of the series was filmed from home”. Martin is still hopeful to travel over to Mallorca in September to see his friends and family and, more importantly, his patients on the island. Martin ended our conversation by saying, “I can’t wait to come back and, although I’m so busy here in the UK, I need to go over and see everyone and introduce Max to the island!” If you’re hoping to see Martin or his team, his clinic, Re-enhance Medicina Asthetica is located in Avenida del Rey Jaime I, 108, in Santa Ponsa and, although he isn’t here until September, enquiries can be made by contacting info@re-enhance.com.To find out more about Icy Bear or to place an order visit www.icybeardental.com and be sure to catch up on Real Housewives of Cheshire on ITVPlayer until the next series. CONVERSE X KEITH HARING Converse’s new Keith Haring collection brings the streets of New York to your soles. This is literally ‘stepping out in street art’. If you’ve been to New York City you can’t walk a block or two without catching a glimpse of Manhattan’s avant-garde graffiti scene. Designs are etched onto billboards, subways and any remotely vacant brick wall within a large radius. Converse has captured this feel by launching a collaborative line with one of the city’s most prolific and progressive pop artists, the late legendary Keith Haring, Known for his playful and uplifting street art drawings with a cheeky hit of colour, the American pop artist’s ’80s subway murals take on a new canvas for the line. Available on Converse’s Chuck 70, Chuck Taylor All Star, Pro Leather and the styleforward Run Star Hike, as well as a series of apparel and a bucket hat, the collection is made for those seeking an edgy and expressive spin on the all-star classics. A driving force throughout Haring’s career was ensuring his work conveyed powerful messages, including being an AIDS and anti-apartheid activist. The collection utilises white, offwhite and black colourways, leaving the artist’s world-renowned illustrations (which have been carefully embroidered onto the shoe’s upper) to take centre stage. Pops of red, green and yellow make an appearance on various designs, elevating the otherwise monochromatic finish. This gives footwear-fiends the option of something simpler and more understated, as well as something with a bit more pizazz. So, jump all over them, at ASOS right now.

SWIMWEAR FOR MEN 2021

SWIMWEAR FOR WOMEN 2021

Mastering fashionable clothing can be difficult enough in a general sense, but swimming trunks are often just a few square centimetres of fabric, so they have to say more about you in less fabric than any other garment. If every street’s a catwalk, then every beach is a minefield. To help you nail poolside cool this summer, I’ve picked the four trends that every man should be buying into.

The Balearics are open so now is the perfect time to start curating your cozzie collection. This season there are all sorts of lovely styles to choose from. From lockdown bod-friendly ruching, to itty bitty strappy numbers, minimalism to psychedelic retro prints, there’s something for every taste and body shape.

MILITARY Action Man cargo shorts have been one of the most prevalent trends of recent decades and it has now gone full circle to storm the beaches. Perfect for those for whom stripping down to shorts leaves them feeling slightly vulnerable – enlisting the armed forces can add some rugged manliness to even the skimpiest of swimwear. If you feel that your legs are not your greatest asset, then these shorts are a great choice. The busy pattern will add some much-needed width and bulk to your legs by drawing the eye outwards. Don’t go for acres of fabric though - go for a slimmer cut instead. SIMPLE WHITE White shorts are one of menswear’s biggest swimwear trends this season and are perfect on all skin shades. As well as the beaches of Cannes, they’ve been seen at lots of ‘Spring Break’ pool parties in Vegas and Miami. They’re simple, classic and flattering – as long as you get the right size of course. Just don’t forget that they stain easily and can be quite revealing so make sure that they are fully lined. FLOWER POWER Botanical prints have made the jump from female favourite to everyday essentials for men. Floral patterns add a sense of fun to otherwise staid swimwear. For the most flattering look, scale the size of the florals to your frame: if you have a small frame go for a smaller sized floral and if you have a larger frame, choose a bigger print OLD-SCHOOL The appeal of retro sportswear, in general, is huge right now and now nostalgic swimwear trends are diving in too. This season, designers have taken their lead from the old-school vibe and updated it, to help you avoid looking like your school gym teacher on swimming lesson day. You’ve got to have the whole look down to a T, so try wearing them with some equally retro sunglasses. For a reference point, take inspiration from James Bond – he did retro shorts well. More often than not, retro-inspired shorts come in an A-line shape, with wider leg holes to retain the throwback silhouette. While it’s a flattering cut that’ll make you look in proportion (especially if you’re larger up top), it does leave a lot of room for, err, flapping. So, ensure they’re lined to save giving everyone a peek of Harry and Sally when you lay back on the lounger.

Here are six of the key trends to know about: MINIMAL Clean lines and understated silhouettes feel elegant and modern for summer ‘21. Pair with simple sheer slip dresses and thick-soled flipflops for a look that’s classic and cool. RUCHING For anyone that’s gained a couple of lockdown pounds (is there anyone that hasn’t?), this trend’s a blessing. Opt for shiny and metallic materials – think 80s.

CUT-OUTS They’re already a massive trend in clothing and for summer ‘21 cut-outs are a key swimwear trend too. Just watch your tan lines.

RETRO PRINTS I love these – go for psychedelic 70s florals and geometric 80s prints for a summer that’s all kinds of groovy. Imagine Pucci prints and these will make you stand out on the beach or any poolside. Keep hair simple and all need is glistening skin to enhance this look. ASYMMETRY Flash your favourite shoulder in asymmetric necklines. Sparkly turbans and extra bling are positively encouraged. Totally OTT and probably not great to swim in – but you’ll look FABULOUS! ALL TIED UP This summer’s itty-bitty teeny-weeny bikini’s come with tummy ties and strappy waists – the more spaghetti the better. It’s sexy but takes ages to put together and the tan lines are terrible, unless you particularly like geometry.

FACES OF MALLORCA by Ben Mulvey

Nick Entwisle: Yachting Gives Back

Those in the yachting industry will most likely know Nick Entwisle... if you haven’t spotted him in STP at his container HQ sifting through donations, his head will certainly have been spotted towering over a crowd with a smile on his face. Having worked in the yachting industry for over 30 years, Nick is best known for his work with Pinmar and, after retiring, realised that many people employed on superyachts were in a fortunate position and decided to call on his fellow yachties and contacts to help the local community in Mallorca. As Nick states on the very top of the Yachting Gives Back website, “The yachting industry is surrounded by incredible luxury and it’s very easy to forget that people are struggling right on our doorstep!” Initially started as a way to provide food to people in need, Yachting Gives Back has 26 | CELEBRITY

grown to support numerous charities in Mallorca and, during the pandemic, this help has been needed more than ever. By using his extensive network of connections in the yachting industry, Nick and his dedicated team have collected thousands of meals for distribution to people in need. These meals have been prepared in the galleys of some of the most luxurious superyachts by chefs that want to do what they can to give back. “The support from the boats has been incredible. Once one yacht chef offered to start cooking for the homeless, others came forward and the result has been fantastic with healthy meals being prepared every week,” Nick tells me. Yachting Gives Back supports the fabulous work carried out by Assocació Tardor, (soup kitchen, food bank and two homeless shelters), Mallorca Sense Fam

(food bank and charity shop), Es Refugi (homeless shelter and soup kitchen), Can Gaza (Homeless shelter and charity shop), our friends at the JoyRon Foundation (helping children in need across Mallorca), Shambhala Foundation (supporting young people in need) and SOS Mamas (helping mothers with little or no income and their children) amongst others. All of this hard work is carried out by a team of dedicated volunteers from different walks of life, most of whom have a background in yachting. “We are as good as the people that help us and we have an amazing team who work with us to make it easier….and we have fun while we do it”, says Nick. It is not just food that Yachting Gives Back help with, they also provide clothing, bedding, toys and donations to their

supported charities. During the lockdown, more people became homeless due to lack of work and Nick and the team rose to this challenge by providing warm clothing and toiletries to the homeless people that were relocated to the local sports halls. Donations of bedding and a great deal else from superyachts have helped several homeless shelters to provide a warm, clean and safe place for those in need to sleep peacefully. Aside from the charitable aspects of the foundation, it is also enormously sustainable. Unfortunately, the yachting industry is one of overconsumption and waste. What does the chief stew do with 50 pristine uniforms that are no longer required or bedding that now doesn’t match the decor of the master cabin at the end of the season? YGB HQ is there to gratefully receive these items and

use them to help their charities. Most of us shopping in our local supermarket will perhaps have seen a friendly-looking volunteer standing by the checkout with a trolley collecting food. This is all donated to local charities and the volunteers will always be grateful for a chat and to tell you about the work they do. Yachting Gives Back is very proud to run the monthly collection at the Bendinat Eroski on behalf of Tardor. “Not all heroes wear capes” as the famous saying goes but, at Yachting Gives Back, Nick and the team of volunteers deserve to be labelled as such. They are heroes, as are the associations, charities, donors, and Mallorcan residents that all work together to help those that need our help - especially in these trying times. How can you help?

Donate food when you see a collection trolley in your local supermarket. Donate food, which must be unopened and in date, clean clothing and bedding, toiletries, nappies, cleaning materials etc. The Yachting Gives Back container inside the STP shipyard is open to receive donations on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9.30-10.30. If you cannot get to the yard, contact Nick and he or his team will arrange to collect. Alternatively, donate directly to the Yachting Gives Back bank account: Bankia: IBAN ES81 2038 3480 5160 0019 8061 With zero overheads, every Euro donated will be put to good use helping Mallorca’s people in need. The Royal Palma Radio Control Yacht Club – RPRCYC The Royal Palma Radio Control Yacht Club, better known by the tongue-twisting acronym RPRCYC, is Palma’s first and only yacht club that doesn’t require a rather deep pocket full of euros to join. Every Wednesday and Sunday these small remote control yachts can be seen whizzing around “The Pond” in front of the Cathedral with a group of curious spectators watching on. By Ben Mulvey

Founded over several beers in October 2020 by Hamish Reid, Ronan McCormick and Liam Manning, this club was set up as a place for like minded people with a passion for sailing to meet and socialise and, most importantly, crack open a few beers. It is important to explain what “radio control” actually means as I initially believed that this was a group of people playing with toys in a pond - picture the toy boats that are often seen terrorising swans in local parks in the UK. This is certainly not the case as there is a certain degree of skill required to make these boats move as the only motors that are controlled by the radio unit are to move the rudder and the sails. The sailors

line up their boats and race back and forth across the pond to compete for the coveted prize of a bottle of rum. Although the whole afternoon is lots of fun, these seadogs take their racing very seriously although ask them nicely between races and they may let you have little go when there isn’t a bottle of rum at stake! This Yacht Club started with just three boats racing with the founding boys standing at the side of the pond (or in the Guinness bar if it rains) and now has over 45 boats fully built and sailing regularly. The beauty of this club is that membership is automatically granted to those that purchase and build their own boats. As they cost around €250

plus shipping and take around four hours to build, it is an affordable hobby and one that will provide endless hours of fun. If you are looking for something a bit different to do or to meet some new, friendly and fun people, head down to the Cathedral on Wednesday evenings or Sunday afternoons, crack open a beer and have a play with one of the boats. For more information about the club check out their Facebook page https://www. facebook.com/RPRCYC or pop down for a chat at the Cathedral on race day.

Pan de Mar - Baking the Future By Ben Mulvey

The Covid pandemic has caused a lot of stress and heartache around the globe but there have been many stories of people and communities coming together for the greater good. One example of this community spirit is Pan de Mar bakery in Palma. This bakery was started to give fresh, homemade bread to people that have no food and become the first socially responsible bakery in Mallorca. Chef Alexis has made more than 4500 loaves of bread to date and wants to make more. The project works on sponsorship and donations from private individuals and the kind-hearted people that work tirelessly to keep it running. “Every time you buy a loaf of bread you become an active participant in the fight against unemployment and hunger.” The bakery also offers employment to those that need it and is hoping to hire as many people as their donations will afford to take people out of the unemployment queue. The menu is constantly growing and now offers a range of coffees, tostadas and sandwiches as well as their delicious, freshly-baked bread. Have a coffee, buy some bread and change lives at Carrer Ample de la Merce, 26 in Palma. Check out the website www. pandemar.org to make a donation to this fantastic non-profit organisation or find them on Instagram @pandemar.mallorca.

IBIZA - WAIT...WHAT?! Mikey Slade & Lady Casita

WE ARE FAMILY GREETINGS BALEARICEANS, PEOPLE OF OTHER GEOGRAPHICAL PERSUASIONS AND STRAIGHT, LGBTQIA & NON-BINARY HOMO SAPIENS… Welcome to Celebrity’s brand spanking new page from DJs & club promoters Mikey Slade and Lady Casita who hail from the new Ibiza/UK ‘queer kid off the block’ party sensation “Wait…What?” We thought we would share with you an insight into our lives, loves, gossip and the latest news from all around the Balearics and beyond. Not wanting to dwell on the dreaded ‘C’ word too much that has brought so much upheaval and unfortunate sadness into peoples’ lives, one positive aspect Covid has brought to the world of clubbing and dance music is the strengthening of alliances between the in-house families that run organisations and events. Our party “Wait…What?” was born just over two years ago on the legendary street Calle de la Virgen in the Ibiza Old Town at Sunrise Bar. We had a fantastic run of hedonistic parties from April 2019, throughout the summer season right up until NYE 2020 with guest DJ Jon Pleased Wimmin headlining a double NYE extravaganza in Bristol & Ibiza. We had our first birthday party planned, parties in Amsterdam, Brighton, Leeds & Bristol and our summer season at Sunrise Bar all to look forward to plus we were in talks to take “Wait…What?” into one of the big Ibiza clubs. Then it hit! All our hard work and plans were obliterated by Covid, we were shaken but our “Wait…What?” family of twenty plus people were in fighting spirit. Headed by DJ Bekka Rawkins, in lightning speed, we stormed into lockdown with a two-day virtual birthday party, we hosted a new 34 | CELEBRITY

weekly Ibiza radio show, had six virtual fundraiser parties honouring activists and raising money for their causes, a virtual masquerade ball, hosted Bristol Pride, our ally and Ibiza’s most famous boutique hotel Pikes offered us a date to host a day and night party entitled ‘Dub Tropicana’, plus too much more to mention.

We have weathered the storm by pulling together with the “Wait…What?” family working for free during lockdown to keep the brand strong and it has all paid off because we are now hosting at Pikes new venture, a magnificent glamping festival at Marston Park, Somerset. September tickets are now available at www.pikesibiza. com/marstonpark. We have returned to Sunrise after a year and a half of Covid separation and have parties planned in Brighton, Amsterdam, Bristol and Leeds. What have we learned, well you can never keep a good bitch down but, more importantly, determination, belief, community, originality, support, alliances

and love are essential in keeping the party spirit and our beloved queer party “Wait… What?” alive! If You Know, You Know! “Wait…What?” DJ Bekka Rawkins and her partner, Fred Metropolis are the owners of ‘For The Record’, a new vinyl record store in Ibiza. It’s been almost 30 years since Fred Metropolis started selling vinyl to record shops in London and around England. In 2008 he set up his first Discogs store with Bekka, his partner in crime and mother to his two children. Fred & Bekka’s DJing, combined knowledge and genre-defying musical taste have kept them at the forefront of the dance music scene. Their new Ibiza store is a valuable resource for DJs and music lovers alike, especially when looking for that elusive vinyl record for the perfect set. For The Record, the Ibiza store is both online and by appointment only. Check out their stock list or sign up and make an appointment if you prefer to dig through the crates in person. www.fortherecordibiza.com Saludos a todos los de Baleares, a los de otras tierras y a los homo sapiens hetero, LGBTQIA y otros no binarios. What?

MAGICAL MENORCA

Magical Menorca meets Binigaus Band

I pulled on my sparkly rock-star jeans and my trendy (for me!) pretty ballerina trainers and headed off to a rehearsal of Menorca’s very own Binigaus Band, (named after our local beach). Owning their first two albums, I had an inkling of what to expect and I wasn’t disappointed. The band, originally formed in 2012, started out with three members; Nico Gomila, vocalist, Johnny Pascual on the keyboard and Josep Sales, very loudly and enthusiastically, on drums, (the drummer always gets the last word!). They formed as friends from the same village, and my new home, Es Migjorn Gran. Initially rehearsing in Johnny’s garage, with the intention of releasing covers on YouTube, Johnny and Josep soon realised that Nico had already started writing his own songs, and their first original song ‘Sa 36 | CELEBRITY

Videta’ was born. The first two albums have the band’s uniquely styled songs ranging from progressive rock to swing and some ballads. My personal favourites are track 3 and track 9 on Quina Videta, and track 8 and 10 on Seguir Caminant. Curious to know why the songs are in the island’s language of Menorquín, Nico confirmed, “The songs are written in our language, Menorquín. We consider, in a few years it will be very attractive to have our songs recognised with our pure language, since, little by little, it is being lost.” Nico originally accompanied with guitar, but they soon realised their ‘front man’ needed to add the ‘drama’ to their performances, so he now picks up the saxophone on some tracks. They then invited Joan Coll to join them as bass guitarist and Pere Arguimbau on lead guitar, both from the town next to

us, Ferreries. The band was complete. Asking about their creative process the amigos confirmed, “As a general rule, Nico composes the lyrics and chords of the songs. Once he has a clear idea, we take it to the rehearsal room, (no longer in Johnny’s garage!). Nico then teaches us his composition, it’s then up to our guitarist Pere (‘The Doctor’ as we call him) to make the arrangements for the music, always respecting the original idea of the song. Finally, we define the rhythmic base, until the most optimal result is in place.” Where can we find this talented band? EVERYWHERE! Google them! I personally downloaded from Apple music, but they are on all download services and all social media sites. What’s next for the band? They are mid-way through album three and have released their first single ‘Navegar per terra’, I love it already! This is written in Spanish with help from a great friend of the band, Victor from Caceres in Spain, but based on a very old Menorquín song based on a ‘codolade’, Today, Tomorrow and Always, a nonsense poem that they metamorphosed into an epic rock song. Their latest venture has seen them release their first music video ‘Fornells’ on YouTube and social media, and it has been very successful. If like me you know the band, you will recognise the cameo roles, including a friend’s dog! Their second music video for the latest single feature’s local actors from Es Migjorn and in association with colleagues in Mallorca, coming soon! With many local concerts planned for the summer here in Menorca, the band are very busy. When asked if they’d like to perform in Mallorca or Ibiza, the answer was, of course, a resounding “YES”, so watch this space, Celebrity readers, Binigaus Band might be coming your way.

¡Me encanta!

SOLLER VALLEY STORIES

by Soller Shirley Shirley Roberts

Photos by Gary Lloyd-Rees

THE ANNIVERSARY OF OUR UNESCO AWARD… Life in the Soller Valley this summer is dominated by the 10th Anniversary of the UNESCO award to the Tramuntana. The Sierra de Tramuntana is a mountain range running southwest-northeast which forms the northern backbone of the Spanish island of Mallorca. On 27 June 2011, the Tramuntana Range was awarded World Heritage Status by UNESCO as an area of great physical and cultural significance. We have wonderful mountains, great beaches, art, culture and fine food but the award was actually made to remind us that ‘sustainability’ is not a new word. In the past, the Moors dominated our Mallorcan world. They tamed the mountains by terracing and built watercourses to collect every drop of rain that fell. They planted olive and almond trees and made the land work for their lives.

42 | CELEBRITY

The engineering it took to get the water from the melting snow on the mountain tops, or from the rain that fell, was remarkable work. Engineers today still marvel at how this was done and they study many Mediterranean islands to understand all the processes used. The stonewalls are another important skill they passed on and stone works of art (with no cement) caress the mountainside and teach today’s devotees of the art. Unesco’s World Heritage Committee declared the dry stone walls which criss-cross our island as an intangible heritage of humanity. The title was given as the dry stone walls meet specific criteria which include the technique being a living one and the fundamental role it plays in maintaining the environment and landscape. The Tramuntana is 90 km long and stretches from Andratx in the southwest to the Cap de Formentor in the far north of the island. Soller sits in the middle, in its Golden

Bowl of mountains. It has been named the Unesco City of Culture in the Tramuntana. This means in normal times we are buzzing with art, music, concerts and culture in all its forms. As life gets back to normal, Fiestas of the Tramuntana and Music will be our delight. We are also looking forward to our St Bartholomew Fiesta on the days before and after the 24th of August 2021. This is an opportunity to join Sollerics in celebrating what really matters to them – their town, their island and their life. The Fire Run, or Correfoc, where the devils are chased and good triumphs over evil, is the highlight of St Barts for some. Others are delighted by the sight of the local costumes and old traditions. Summer in the Soller Valley is glorious from all the events and traditions to glorious beach days and sunsets. We do hope you come to visit us soon.

BOATS, BIKES & AUTOMOBILES by Hamish Goddard

Here we are in summer already and as Europe heats up in the sun, various sporting events are catching up on the lost year of last year, even if the Euro 2020 footie we all enjoyed appeared to have got the date wrong. Such is the power of merchandising and branding, the administration and cost of renaming the event ‘Euro 2021’ was deemed to be not only wasteful in binning all that pre-produced kit from our friends in China, but presented legal challenges too in terms of all the various contracts drawn around the legal entity of ‘Euro 2020’ - so a sensible decision all round. And who cares really, because it actually happened and how refreshing it was - even in a Covid date warp - to see fans gather in bars, enjoying a drink and a good old yell at giant TV screens across the continent. The English team did the country proud in how they played and carried themselves throughout the tournament, emphatically including

the poor lads that missed their penalties on the night - their collective and superb contribution getting us to the final in the first place. PALMA SUPERYACHT CUP As things relax a bit in terms of being able to lead something closer to a normal life, we’ve also been busy on this island playing catch up on events that we have sorely missed over the last year, one of which was the Palma Superyacht Cup, taking its usual end-ofJune slot out in Palma Bay. I arrived on this island in June 2015 and chased that year’s instalment of the Cup on

a tiny waterlogged Williams jet-RIB, putting it firmly on my wish list of events in which I’d love to take part - realised this year when invited to join the crew on the beautiful 34m/112’ sailing yacht, Baiurdo VI. Skippered by the popular and supremely capable Kristyn Gills, the crew of 20+ were from a mixture of all the great sailing nations, with the common theme that aside from being excellent company, they were all exceptionally experienced in the art of big boat racing - and there can be fewer sports where coordination, timing and teamwork have to come together in such a way to make it all work, as much for safety as anything to do with performance.

on for the regatta, with delightful hosts in Capt Kris and the yacht’s incumbent crew - as well as Snr Della Casa of course, the epitome of an Italian gentleman and a lovely man, clearly adoring every minute and appreciative of the exceptionally capable and good-humoured crew, even if the language on occasions was as blue as the bay. I feel hugely privileged to have been a part of it and grateful to all who made it possible (and particularly to those who grabbed me before I went over the side…).

Designed by the famed marine architect Gilles Vaton, Baiurdo VI was built at the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in Germany all the way back in 1992 and was the first superyacht to feature a lifting keel and a fold-out anchor hidden in the foredeck, collectively producing useable performance benefits and an aesthetic cleanliness way ahead of her time. Owned by a delightful Italian, Snr Enrico Della Casa - onboard and steering on occasions throughout the regatta - she is the sixth and final Baiurdo in his stable, all the others having been dinghies. The first was 8ft long and named ‘Baiurdo’ from his repeated mispronunciation of an Italian word as a very young boy - and the fifth a Flying Dutchman, the former two-man Olympic-class dinghy and a manly and athletic boat in any language. So with a lifelong love of sailing under his belt, we all headed out into the bay for three

days of quite stunning racing with a sea breeze that rolled in each day at noon and ended up with a 3rd, 2nd and 3rd in our class. We also scooped the prize for being closest to the gun at the start line, crossing the line 00.00 to the second that it was sounded - no mean feat in something weighing over 100 tons and going 10 knots. After a bit of a tumble down the decks to the leeward guard rail on the middle day, I took the Friday out on a RIB from The RIB Club for a chance to chase the fleet and appreciate the close-up and powerful majesty of these big yachts when racing - captured beautifully as you can see here by my great photographer chum Christopher Scholey: www.christopherscholey.com It was perhaps the last regatta for the foreseeable future for Baiurdo VI, having been put up for sale and listed with Edmiston in Monaco for just under €2m. As it was, my feeling was that she was the ‘fun boat’ to be CELEBRITY | 47

CELEBRITYY CELEBRIT Property Market Update Santa Maria - 2.895m

Since restrictions started lifting across Europe earlier in the year, Mallorca has seen a strong increase in property sales around the island, with a surge in German purchasers in particular. This momentum has continued into the summer season, with the Balearics being added to the UK Green list late June, to then promptly be returned to amber a few weeks later! High-end luxury real estate continues to be very strong - a bit of an irony considering the economic impact of the last 18 months. I have been involved with negotiations on a frontline property in the south west for over 10 months since the summer last year. We appeared to have finally come to an agreement, with nearly Eu1m knocked off the rather substantial asking price of circa Eu19m. These don’t come along very often so it’s a bit of a real estate agent’s dream when they do. However, such is the pace of high-end sales at present, another agent came to view the property with a British client on the end of a video call and ended with a full asking price offer secured - probably making it one of the most expensive properties ever bought on a Facetime call. So near and yet so far – all hugely frustrating for both my parties! This business can on occasions be a bit like The Weakest Link, in that if you don’t win it, you go home with nothing, 50 | CELEBRITY

applying as much to the buyer as the agent! Having worked in the property market for nearly 19 years, I have to say that I have never before seen such a high demand as in recent months. The market as a whole is hectic and this message is getting home – with clients set on buying with much more determination than the past and with much less procrastination. I even had a bidding situation on a property in Old Bendinat for Eu7.7m in the last few weeks. One client coming in with an offer of Eu7.5m which swiftly increased to an asking price offer due to potential competition. The next day, two further viewings resulted in the asking price offer being gazumped with a Eu7.9m offer. In the end, the first offer was accepted and the sale is going through. This business is definitely not for the fainthearted - and procrastinating clients are learning they have to be swift to get what they want in prime locations. This strong demand is a good indicator that the premium market sector continues to be stable and that wealthy clients are buying real estate in Mallorca as a safe haven for their money, rather than the risk of leaving it in the bank or share ownership in the potential event of an economic slump or global recession; a possibility that many economists say could well be on the horizon. The old Bricks & Mortar adage… But there must be more to Mallorca than just being a safe haven for your money. So what is it that the wealthy German’s, Swedes - as well as other nationalities rushing to buy here - know that you don’t? I’ll let you into a secret. These past few years have seen a metamorphosis of Mallorca, ironically sped up by a very uncertain 1 ½ years of global pandemic. This transformation is taking place on multiple fronts – but all are connected to a return to old time traditions and values, with a modern approach. An influx of newcomer artists and creatives have been relocating as a ‘back to basics’

lifestyle choice, injecting fresh ideas into long-established traditional crafts; a raft of noteworthy boutique hotels have opened with a more sustainable approach, as well as high-end hoteliers starting to prioritise all things organic, zero-waste and more sustainable. With traditional and rural gastronomy having largely been ignored by the mass consumerism of the last few decades, home grown artisans, cooks and winemakers are being rediscovered, reinventing their products for a more discerning, slower paced and more environmentally friendly palate. Finally, there is the expansion of the wellness market - with a wide array of wellness oriented hotels, retreat centres, holistic therapists and wellness warriors offering a plethora of treatments, experiences and ways to recuperate and regenerate. This is helping the island’s reputation grow as a central hub for healing, rejuvenation and well-being. This is a giant leap for Mallorca and we are all behind this new regenerative approach, which will unquestionably bring benefits to locals, home-owners and visitors alike. Add all of this to the well-known attributes Mallorca has to offer; its Mediterranean climate and lifestyle, low crime rates, good infrastructure and accessibility through one of Europe’s most well connected airports, all contribute to making Mallorca a difficult destination to beat! After all these trying and troubling times of Covid-19, should you be thinking it’s time to change your personal horizons, we specialise in finding the right location and property for you, your family and your lifestyle requirements. I look forward to hearing from you. Amanda J Butler www.mjcassociates.net

HOMES & PROPERTIES

Esperamos tu llamada y poder conocerte pronto. Amanda J Butler www.mjcassociates.net

Life’s a Beach We all love going to the beach for a swim and to cool down and it’s even better if we can take our furry friends with us but in summer, Mallorca is extremely hot and this can lead to problems with our canine companions. Also, they must be well controlled, well socialised and we have to be very careful to clean up after them as not to give a bad reputation to other good dog owners. Which beaches can they go on? There are several beaches in Mallorca that have areas provided to allow our dogs to go on the beach. You can find them on www. RedCanina.es. They include Pollensa, Can Picafort, Can Pastilla, Palmanova, Costa de la Calma and another near Camp de Mar. What is the law about dogs on beaches? It´s important to know the laws as the fines could be between 303000€. In the past, we could go on other beaches outside of the summer tourist season but now I fear that there is an all-year-round ban. So be careful. I tried to check the legislation for Calvia and Palma and I could not find anything very clear so stick to the designated beaches. Be careful with several health problems; firstly, overheating/ heat stroke. This can be life-threatening so always provide shade, don’t overdo exercise, and provide plenty of fresh water. If your dog drinks too much seawater, this can lead to vomiting and diarrhoea and lead to severe dehydration. Eating too much sand whilst playing with toys can lead to digestive problems, rarely intestinal obstructions, but be aware. Sand in their eyes can lead to conjunctivitis (pussy, sore eyes), so maybe take some monodosis of saline to clean their eyes afterwards. Overall, have fun, be careful with heat and dehydration, and behave well (dogs and owners!!). Beaches are a great place to socialise our dogs and to create a happy, healthy pet.

DARRYL LOPEZ: MAKING INSURANCE EASIER

By Ben Mulvey

Health Matters: How to ensure you and your family receive the best healthcare possible.

Darryl Lopez from AXA DYLSI Insurance agency explains why private health insurance is so important when living overseas and breaks down all of the benefits as a specialised health insurance agency in a way that is easy to understand. Having worked with local Mallorcan residents and expats for the last four years to help them with all types of insurance Darryl and his team have quickly built up a reputation as one of the most trusted insurance agents on the island. The benefits for expats when taking out a private medical insurance policy are: LANGUAGES Most expats would prefer to be treated by healthcare professionals that also speak their language. Darryl and his team make sure that all documents and quotes are provided in English, Spanish or German and are on hand to recommend doctors that speak your language from the AXA network in Mallorca. With private healthcare, you can choose the doctor or specialist you want to use which is not possible with public health care.

INDEMNITY PERIOD Most insurance policies have a short indemnity period at the beginning that means that certain services as surgery or advanced tests are not covered until you’ve been insured for a certain amount of time. AXA will waive this if you already have an insurance policy with another company, in Spain or in your home country. UNLIMITED AND LIFETIME COVERAGE AXA policies are for life. At no point will AXA reject your insurance, and also all treatment is unlimited meaning that should a long hospital stay or multiple visits to the doctor be required you are covered in full, as long as you use the AXA network. TRAVEL INSURANCE As expats, we tend to travel home quite often and also on holidays thanks to our wellconnected airports on the islands. All AXA policies include travel insurance that can be used all over the world.

REDUCED WAITING TIMES There are often long waiting lists to receive treatment through the public health system but with private insurance, you can see a doctor almost immediately and receive a much quicker diagnosis.

PARTIAL PAYMENTS You can also choose a policy with a deductible (copago) which means you pay a small payment when you visit a doctor or receive treatment and reduce the monthly premium. This is a great option for people that are normally healthy and for younger people.

PREVENTATIVE MEDICINE A private medical insurance policy with AXA includes general check-ups as well as different preventive programmes to make sure that you are healthy. This helps catch any potential issues early enough for them to be treated.

COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE With the premium insurance packages, complementary medicine is included to cover specialities such as osteopaths, acupuncturists, chiropractors and homoeopathic practitioners with a free choice of professionals.

PREGNANCY PROGRAMME All insurance policies with AXA include a pregnancy programme that covers all pregnancy-related treatments as well as postpartum pelvic exercises and birth preparation classes. DENTAL COVER Dental insurance can be added to any health insurance policy for a small cost and covers reduced-cost treatments and free annual teeth cleaning, among others. Whatever your health insurance needs, Darryl and his team at DYLSI will help you find a policy that suits you and are available to guide you through the application process, any claims, any concerns you may have and to offer their personal recommendations. Give them a call now for your peace of mind that you will be well looked after.
