The first traffic accident in brazil

Brazil’s national anthem author was the first person to crash his car in the country

In 1897 the poet Olavo Bilac, founder of Academia Brasileira de Letras, journalist and Brazil’s national anthem author, was responsible for the first car crash registered in the country. He was running with his Serpollet, which he gained from the abolitionist and owner of the paper “A Cidade do Rio”, José do Patrocínio, at the unbelievable speed of 4 km/h and managed to bash it against a three. It happened in Tijuca’s Estrada Velha in Alto da Boa Vista at Rio de Janeiro. The accident victims were only the poor three, which had nothing to do with it and the obviously, the car. Now, the first car arrived in Brazil in 1893 and the first crash was only registered in 1897. Jokes aside, four years without an accident in this country is an exceptional data. Nevertheless, that says a lot about urban tracks speed’s diminishment contrary opinions.

DKWVemag Brief history about one of Brazil’s pioneer automaker

Text: Valdecir Arrais Photos: ACERVO DKW-VEMAG

DKW’s factory was built in a 1.091.500 m² area. This happened in the early forties. Its architecture was audacious and the brand was one of the biggest Brazilian automobile’s empires into the sixties. The place was located at Vemag Street, 1036 by the margins of Tamanduateí river, at Vila Prudente neighborhood in São Paulo. It was very close to Ipiranga’s neighborhood, which is a Brazilian historical site. That’s where Dom Pedro I proclaimed the republic. Such fact, opened country’s gates for auto industries and auto parts productive chain. Vemag began its activities in 1945. In the beginning, they were a Studebaker automobile’s distributor, that was also their social name. Such company, used to assemble and send to the whole country vehicles from Massey Harris, Studebaker, Ferguson, Kenworth and Scania Vabis.

Political transformations happened in the fifties. One, was the famous automobile industries’ incentive. The responsible was Brazil’s president at the time, Juscelino Kubitschek. Vemag was the first factory to get beneficiated by such tax breaks. The brand’s motto was: “Brazilians producing vehicle’s for Brazil”. This is a national automobile’s industry historical sentence. In November 19th the “Camioneta”, also known as “Perua”, DKW-Vemag Universal was introduced. The vehicle was a copy from an Auto-Union’s German made model. However, was the first genuinely national, according to GEIA parameters. In 1958 the DKW-Vemag Jipe was released, posteriorly it became known as “Candango”. Although, in 1964, DKW-Vemag made a huge innovation. The brand launched a differentiated and advanced model for the time. The DKW-VEMAG Fissore. Its mechanics were the same as Belcar’s, another company’s vehicle, but its bodywork's design and developed were made in Italy. It even inspired early seventies BMW’s. Vemag had a fundamental part in Brazil’s auto industry. The factory managed to employ 3.500 workers in 1967. Nevertheless, in the same year it’s activities ceased. In 1964, Volkswagen purchase Daimler-Benz stocks and became one of Auto-Union owners. It created a certain preoccupation to Vemag regarding DKW vehicle’s construction license renewal. So, the brand decided to react. They got in touch with Peugeot, Citröen and even FIAT, but not positive outcomes came from it. Soon, VW bought all the stock that were left and became Auto-Union’s single owner.

In November 1966, Lelio de Toledo Piza, Vemag’s president, declared to the press they had officially joined Volkswagen do Brasil. No one knew yet, but Vemag was near its end. By September 1967 VW took over Vemag under the commitment to not close its vehicle’s production. Even so, later they took double tempo engines out of the market. After DKW’s vehicle’s production closure, the German company continued with components making in order to supply the reposition market. Its development department was installed at old Vemag’s industrial park. There, famous vehicles were produced, such as Brasilia, Passat and even Gol’s first generation. VW factory two, as it was called, occupied Vemag Street’s installations into the eighties.

BMW M5 E28 The first car from the fastest sedan series

BMW M5 is a sports performance sedan. The main European automobile’s publications pointed it as the fastest of the world when it was released. It happened because BMW assemble this vehicle with a super car engine. The history of the series began with the E28 in 1984. In this year, the vehicle was presented at Amsterdam Auto Show. And, the automaker’s proposal was shocking for the time. Its engine was an evolution of the one in BMW M1, a sport car from the company. This machine had 3.5 L, six lined cylinders, 24 valves and could reach 282 HP. The E28 yet would take only 6,5 seconds to achieve 100 km/h. Besides, the connecting rods, pistons and injection system gained an upgrade in relation to the M1. The transmission was manual, with five gears and rear traction.

The first “muscle car” with a supercharger

Ford is an innovating brand, there are no doubts about that. This fame is justified by the company's pioneering. Since the 10 dollars’ V8s production into today’s astonishing vehicles. However, in 1964 the company was responsible for the creation of the first “Muscle car” or “Pony Car”, which is a compact vehicle with great power.

This car was the Ford Mustang. Its name is inspired by the jet fighters p-51 Mustang and also in by the only wild horse’s race from USA. Mustang's first generation counted with an original Ford’s V8 with 4,8 L and 271 HP. It also had a six cylinders’ option with 100 HP and 2,8 L, but 70% of these vehicles were sold equipped, obviously, with the great V8. In time, due to its huge success, the Mustang gained some upgrades. One would be more powerful than the other. This one in the picture is a GT from 1967. The machine had some modifications made by Sergio Preparações workshop. Sergio Pires, the vehicle’s preparer commented: “I made a light preparation and installed a stronger command. It increased torque. Also, I placed a super charger, which is a more powerful turbine”.

DKW-VEMAG BELCAR The first sedan produced according with Brazilian’s government incentive Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Rafael Pires

Between 1958 and 1967 Vemag produced a Brazilian automobile called Belcar. More than 50 thousand units were made under the license of the German brand DKW. The vehicle was a derivative of DKW F92.

Belcar is a diminutive for “beautiful car”. However, before 1961 it was known just as “Big DKW-Vemag”. Its characteristics were, good internal comfort, robust mechanics adapted for Brazil’s roads and good stability. Moreover, it had space for six people.

Its engine was a 1000 CC three cylinders with water refrigeration and double tempo, just as all DKWs. Such machine’s construction was simple, but it used to mixture oil and gasoline and the result was a lot of smoke. It had forward traction, because as Vemag said: “The oxen must pull the car, not push it”.

Power would reach 50 HP and torque 8,5 kgfm. Nevertheless, this car had seven mobile pieces, three pistons, three connecting rods and one crankshaft. There was no water pump, it used a siphon.

The gear had four positions besides the rear one. An exclusive configuration of the vehicle was a free wheel. It could be turned off by a cable located under the panel and it would drop the engine to low gear when acceleration ceased. The clutch was a dry single disc and there was even a semi- automatic option.

Although, not everything was a paradise. Belcar’s doors opened in the contrary way as conventional ones. Because of that, they were known as “suicidal doors”. It was horrible for women. Back then, many would use skirts. So, when they would exit the car, things would show. That’s why the car was also known as “let us see”. In Portuguese this sentence pronunciation sounds a lot like "DKW".

As to performance, the Belcar could go from 0 to 100 km/h in 31,3 seconds. Its maximum speed was 125 km/h, but its last series, produced in 1967, could reach 133 km/h. Consumption though, wasn’t that great. It had an average of 6,7 km/l in the city and 8,5 km/l on the road.

A curious fact about Vemag, is that it was the first Brazilian company to use the government’s automotive industries incentive. In 1956, they introduced the “Perua Universal”, one of the first vehicles developed by GEIA criteria’s.

FORD COBRA 427 One of these days a Ford Cobra replica appeared at Sergio Preparações workshop. This car was there for a revision, but what matters now is its history.

Sergio Pires, responsible for the workshop and old car’s admirer, explained: “The Ford Cobra was an AC Cobra’s adaptation thought by Carroll Shelby. He ran with this car in England and noticed that it would be much better with an American engine, more specifically, an original Ford’s V8. So, he bought one, ripped off its mechanics and installed the new motor”.

The result was exceptional. Shelby won many races with such vehicle. Thus, it got popular and Carroll’s last name aggregated even more value when allied to a car.

Sergio said: “Some Ford vehicles have the Shelby Brand on its name. It is a quality’s synonymous. He had a great reputation in the company and was a respected representative. Even when he was way older, Ford went after him to approve the release of the Mustang Shelby. He drove it and asked for a couple modifications”.

Nevertheless, back to Ford Cobra. Its success was so big that only Santo Andre’s city had two replica factories. According to Sergio, this is one of the most copied vehicles throughout the world. So, into today is hard to know if the first one made in Brazil was a copy of the original or from another replica.
