Races began right after the gasoline automobile’s invention. Such competitions were influenced by the popular cart races. Still, the first official one only occurred in 1895 One year before, a reliability test was set up in France, country which held the fastest automobile’s industry development. The course had 127 kilometers, began in Paris, went to Rouen and came back.
History’s first car race Text: Rafael Pires Photos:Internet
France was the stage of the first car competition
It wasn’t considered the first race because the organizer’s meant to demonstrate cars were in fact the future’s transportation. As a matter of fact, Paris-Rouen-Paris was a caravan trip. Nevertheless, it had a winner. Georges Lemaitrê. He arrived in second place, but Jules-Albert de Dion, who actually came back to Paris faster than everyone else had a forbidden accessory in his vehicle. However, in the next year the first car race happened. It was on June 11Th and it became known as Paris-Bordeaux-Paris. The competition began in Versailles and the started at noon. Cars reached 20 km/h, which back then was quite fast. This course had 1178 km and 46 contestants, yet only 22 ran it. The winner was Émile Levassor. But, he was disqualified. His vehicle failed to obey competition demands. So, the prize also went for the second place. A few months after, at November 2Th of the same year, the first car race in American soil occurred. It happened in a Chicago’s course, which had 54,36 miles. Frank Duryea arrived before three other gasoline vehicle’s and two electrics.

A CAR THAT STRUGGLES AGAINST EXTINCTION The Democrat or “Democrata” was a project vehicle created in the 60’s by Nelson Fernandes. It was the first 100% brazilian vehicle, but received a huge retaliation. Nelson Fernandes built himself a factory in the ABC paulista near an easy access road for distribution. It had more the one hundred employees. That’s the scenario in which he decided to develop the “Democrata”. The car’s bodywork had a revolutionary material for the time. Glass fiber, the same one used on the Corvette. Into today is well accepted in the manufacturing of special vehicles, because it’s robust and easy modeling. But, back then the press said the car wasn’t real. They said it was made of plastic. The fiber wasn’t a wellknown material in Brazil. “Democrata” was baptized in an assembly and unfortunately the military regime took control of the country one year later. That’s when it started to be attacked, it got to such a point that Nelson’s company had to close its doors. The year was 1968
and production of the vehicle had started. However, only a few units were complete and they had to be hidden. Some were buried in a rush at the company’s yard. The government wouldn’t stop oversighting. They used all sorts of excuses, likepoiting out that the cover’s mechanics were imported and it wasn’t allowed. Only twenty years later, after the regime Nelson’s innocence was conceded and he had no conditions to reestablish production. The Finardi Brothers, José Carlos and José Luiz, from the 100% motor team heard the history and contacted Nelson Fernandes. That’s when they bought his company, the IBAP (Indústria Brasileira de Automóveis Presidente) and reengaged the project. They used to work on automakers and brought other people to redesign the car. Thus, after many sleepless nights, they found an ideal new drawing. With the support of a headlight's factory, they’ve got one similar to the Chevrolet Monza commercialized in the 90’s. During the restauration there was a concern of using material from the time. So, the sits were disassembled and used for new molds that look exactly like the original ones in black corvine. For the steering wheel it was used hardwood. The painting had all the cares to look as closest as it could to the original, even a special ink was made. Moreover, the frontal letters were commissioned to an artisan in order to make it just like it was. Still, the friezes took seven days each to be done. Finardi said: “People would call us crazy. But, now were on the third vehicle’s fabrication and other crazy people are joining. Like Alvaro Perozini Negri. Yet, there are still twenty-six bodyworks to resume production. So, the craziness will go on for a long time”.
Chevrolet Chevette WITH A “twist” Ethanol automatic car gained an injection system to solve the original mechanics deficiencies Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Rafael Pires
In 1973 General Motors released the Chevette. This car made its mark in history. It is quite hard to find anyone that never heard about it. Nevertheless, according to the mechanic José Carlos Finardi, this vehicle had many issues in some of its versions. “When GM released the ethanol automatic model, its conduction was almost impossible. The vehicle had to warm up to start and take off or else the engine would shut down. The manual gear had the same deficiency, but in its case, drivers could accelerate to keep the engine in high rotation before engaging gear and control in the gearing. However, in the automatic it was a little more complicated. A not so good solution was driving with the choker pulled. It made the car use way more fuel and also contaminated the crankcase oil. That was the start of a horror show. Engine’s durability was compromised, alcohol vapor went straight inside the carburetor and the car drowned. A catastrophe”, unburdened Finardi.

corsa's coil
Ten years ago one of these ethanol Chevettes owners told Finardi his car was left aside. He had no pleasure driving it. Thus, the mechanic took as a challenge to install an electronic injection and preserve the car’s appearance. So, a Corsa multipoint injection system was added. The module and the coil also came from the same vehicle. This last piece had low gear actuator, body throttle injection sensor and admitted air temperature sensor. Other components prevenient from Corsa were rotation sensor of the phonic wheel and the crankshaft. The function of this equipment was determine the initial neutral spot. Without it, the engine wouldn’t work. corsa's phonic wheel
pressure regulator with regulation
The original collector was adapted to receive four injector nozzles and the fuel gallery fixation. Besides, this Chevette won a hydraulic steering wheel from a BMW and an electrical direction oil pump from the Mercedes-Benz A Class. Finardi said: “This was an option to eliminate engine power loss”. Moreover, it got a Lambda probe system to keep the vehicle in the correct stoichiometric range. It also diminishes pollutants emissions and fits the car for every vehicle inspection. Thus, This Chevette’s consumption improved as well. An original makes 6 km/l while this one makes 9 km/l. The service was so well made that the car only came back this year for a profound revision. Finardi explained: “This time I installed a pressure regulator with regulation. The idea was making the injection’s stoichiometric range correction even better”. “Such car has a better dirigibility than the original. It is used daily by the owner and is extremely trustworthy”, concluded Finardi about the modified Chevette.

he’s gonna stop, but who’s gonna stop him" In the end of the 19th century John Francis Dodge and Horace Elgin Dodge planned to build a different automobile. In 1914, they began producing pieces and developing an industry to make such machine. However, in 1920 both brother’s died and in 1928 the Chrysler Corporation took over Dodge. Thus, many super vehicles were made by the company, which haven’t stopped into today. One

that could reach 425 HP.
Still, the most well know R/T had a hard top.
This car was driven by Jimmy Kawalski in the movie “Vanishing Point”. Kowalski, in the original 1971 version, was a car1s deliverer that in the movie became the last American hero. The character was disturbed by his Vietnam war experiences, but drove all over the USA to find himself and remember why he was alive. In the second version, from 1997, the protagonist crosses the country in a Challenger making fast money to pay for his pregnant wife medical cares. In 1971, the Challenger gained a new stile. Power was reduced to tend pollutants emissions. Even so the strongest version would yet offer 440 HP. 1972 wasn’t a good year for Dodge. That year, the R/T was replaced by Rally, which had only 150 HP. And, in 1974 the Challenger stop being produced. Enthusiasts and the company itself longed for its returned. So, in 2006 the “Challenger Concept” was built. Such car was a huge sales success. The Hemi V8 engine with 425 HP caught the USA market’s attention. Its maximum speed is 320 km/h and it can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.5 seconds. Challenger still got a new version after that, the Hellcat. This is the powerful one. And, can reach 717 HP.
Engine transplant pt. 2 Chevrolet Omega with a BMW V8
Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Rafael Pires/Internet
Omega is the big asset of adptations. This is the second time the 100% Motor Classics magazine talks about an engine transplant performed in this vehicle. The other article can be found in the first edition. This time, the Chevrolet’s car received a BMW 740i V8. Sergio Pires, responsible for the preparation which happened in his workshop, said: “Originally, this machine has a maximum power of 286 HP at 5400 rpm and its torque reaches 42,8 kgfm at 3600 rpm. However, I am also installing a programmable electronic injection and it might increase this numbers”.
BMW 740i 1998
To fit the engine, Sergio made an adaptation phalanx. It happened because according to the preparer, the engine had a different notch. The BMW 740i is a vehicle from the “7” series of the German brand. Its maximum speed is 250 km/h and it accelerates from 0 to 100 in seven seconds. Nevertheless, consumption isn’t so great. In urban tracks the car makes 4.5 kilometer per liter and in the road 7 km/l. Sergio predicted that in the Omega all this numbers might improve. Besides, in order to solve the fuel consumption deficiency, the owner had installed previously a modified injection system. Sergio explained: "Now, I’m going to add a sequential injection, which means the valves will open according to the ignition order. It is a kind of multipoint injection. It will improve car’s performance, fuel economy and pollutants emission will decrease”.
OMEGA ready to receive the new engine

Volvo 480 ES Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Volvo's Collection
The car that shaped the future
The Volvo 480 ES was revealed to the world in 1986. According to Volvo, this vehicle was one of the biggest highlights at Geneva Auto Show that year. It didn’t happen just because this was the first sports car the company had released in over a decade, but also because of its design. The vehicle had a wedge shaped low body, pointed nose and pop up lights, which provided a clue of what was there to come in the automotive world. The 1.7 liters’ engine could reach 109 HP due to catalyzers help. Thus, maximum speed was 190 km/h and its acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h took 9.5 seconds. Volvo affirms that although this motorization wasn’t so powerful, the 480 ES had properties that justified its sports appearance. Moreover, in 1988 the turbo version of this car was released. Such model’s engine could reach 120 HP with an turbo exhauster and an intercooler. In 1993 a new 2.0 machine was added to 480 ES, but power diminished to 110 HP. Nevertheless, torque increased. Volvo didn’t develop this car to be a sales champion. Still, it was one of the most important vehicles in 1986 Geneva’s Auto Show.
