Old car’s black license plate Know What's necessary to get permission and acquire a collector’s license plate

o

ne of the things that calls attention at old cars besides the own vehicles are its black license plates. They can highlight an automobile charm. This plates are part of license categories in Brazil. They have normal size, black background and grey letters. Their function is to identify collection vehicles according CONTRAN’s resolution. Beyond that, its purpose is preserving originality and historical value.

However, in order to acquire one, a car needs to fill up some requirements. In accordance with CONTRAN, vehicles should be manufactured 30 years ago, must hold on to original characteristics, integrate a collection and the owner needs to deliver DENATRAN a duly recognized originality form. Black license plates, besides aesthetic effects, also bring vehicles some advantages. They get dismissed from inspection and from the obligatory usage of homologated equipment after its fabrication. Also, there’s no need for fire extinguisher, it can traffic freely around entire national territory and gains a “Collection Vehicle” classification.

By 1928 the number 25.000 Chevrolet was

produced, this was a spectacular number for that used to live in the city back then and it was also going time. To celebrate it, GM organized an event, invited through an industrial explosion. Thus, it was noticed authorities of international repercussion and General

GM had been very well accepted by Brazilians and

The factory’s location was strategical. It was

close to a very active area of São Paulo and it was great

demand had to grow.

So, a new area was acquired at São Caetano

do Sul. Back than it was considered to be far from the capital. Nevertheless, by October 1929 it was functional. However, this was a disastrous year for North America’s economy. That’s when the Great Depression happened. This crisis effects had worldwide repercussions. In Brazil, coffee expansion reduced drastically and at the same time dollar lost its value.

Brazilian GM suffered a similar impact to

other countries'. Sales dropped considerably and many employees had to be fired.

Notwithstanding, São Paulo’s government

bought an entire stock of their vehicles and requested the company to work normally. Still, as all the sector, GM was part of the military mobilization civil rearguard and began maintenance and repair of damaged cars as well as adaptation of the civil ones for military use.

In 1940, 77% of vehicles destined to collective

transportation had bodyworks produced at São Caetano’s factory. GMB also began wood bodywork production for trucks and Chevrolet reached a nationalization grade of 62%. Yet, pieces were sold to other companies.

Another market was aimed by this company.

They imported from USA’s GM a refrigerator called “Frigidaire”. What GMB never predicted was that it would make them one of the most regarded home appliances brand among Brazilians between the forties and the fifties.

In 1949, began São Caetano’s factory’s enlarge-

ment. A new workshop was created and it had two production lines with a 15 vehicles per hour production capacity. This made GM a pioneer at automobile’s industry nationalization. The official program for such action was only instituted in 1956. However, they’ve been doing it since mid-forties.

In 1948, GM produced the first steel bus fully

assembled in Brazil. Raw material would come from

Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional located at Volta Redonda, Rio de Janeiro. This bus was one ton lighter than wooden ones. Their nationalization grade was 89%. Its release is a great date for national industry. 300 units were manufactured, each one had 32 sits. Glass, sits, tires, batteries, floor, paint, garrisons were all national.

By the millionth steel bus, GM released an urban

version for 70 passengers. It would tend perfectly the collective transportation market that was in expansion. Before it was released, other 300 units had already been commissioned.

In March 1959 GM inaugurated a second factory

in São José dos Campos. It had the capacity to build 50 thousand vehicles per year. Moreover, it was the first engine’s factory of the brand in Brazil.

In order of improving vehicles quality and

suppling a demanding consumers market, at 1972 GM acquired the Cruz Alta farm. It has 11.272 million m² and resides in Indaiatuba. There, a test field was built. This place was inaugurated three years later and it is used by the company for testing and validation of all Brazilian models into today. The terrain of this place is surrounded by a preserved green area.

Also in 1975, the new Delco factory began

production. It belonged to GMB and was eight times bigger than the previous one. One year before moving they used to produce 350 thousand units, but in this site, annual production reached in 1976 one million batteries.

24 years later, the final revolution happened.

ACDelco came to Brazil as result of the AC Spak Plug Division and Delco Remy Corporation fusion. Both were incorporated by General Motors.

Their focus was ride, utilitarian vehicles and

lighter national or imported trucks. Brand wasn’t important. Soon, right after arriving it became the auto parts producer with the most complete package.

When it comes to this pieces, they receive information from recptors. Consequently, its system’s conditions are very important. He said: “The speedometer relies on transmitters that are gear and its cable. The fuel indicator gets data from the tank’s buoy. Another transmitter is the engine block temperature sensor that feeds the water heat indicator. Now the clock relies on car’s battery”.

Although the external part of a panel is big, the

Anastácio Mazzaropi’s truck that had a Strong personality Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Rafael Pires

i

n 1952, the truck Anastácio debuted in theaters with in Mazzaropi’s movie “Sai da Frente”. This was also the actor’s first time on the big screen. By then, he was already famous for radio, television and circus participations. The movie was a huge success and helped Vera Cruz Productions coming back from a crisis. Anastácio was one of the main characters aside Isidoro Colepícula and Coroné, his dog. This truck had, believe it or not, his own will, and was falling into pieces. It would only start when it wanted and still all pieces were under Anastácio’s control. Moreover, when its engine ran all

the neighborhood would wake up. However, despite all this success into a while back the truck was abandoned at Vera Cruz studios in São Bernardo do Campo. Alvaro Polosini Negri is responsible for its restauration and he said: “I was invited by the culture secretary Adalberto Guazzelli to bring Anastácio to its former glory. He said that Vera Cruz was in the hands of an outsourced company that didn’t complied with caring demands. That’s why city hall retook possession”. According to Alvaro, São Bernardo’s Mayer Orlando Morando decided to reactivate the studios.

Thus, in the basement many scene objects from Vera Cruz glorious time were found. Among this relics, there was Anastácio. Alvaro explained: “I discovered that this truck is one of the three that were used as this character. It was rotten in a basement with deteriorated films. Inside of it, there was even newspaper clippings of that time”. The city hall’s idea is making the truck operational again. What they want is bringing up the memory and teach children about all this cinematographic production that took place in the city. Besides, the truck will participate of expositions, cultural events and be shown at schools. So, Alvaro affirmed: “When I was removing the vehicle, we knock down a wall to

get it out. Then, with a winch we carefully took it to the hangar where I perform the restauration services”. The tinker Enedino works with Alvaro for 25 years and will remake some of Anastácio’s pieces manually. “I trust entirely in Enedino. For me, he’s like 'the last of the Mohicans' because he can make a fender angulation with a hammer and is a perfect job. By hand. It’s a kind of art”. Nevertheless, the truck is a 1928 Chevrolet and have many wooden parts. Consequently, a carpenter will be necessary. Withal, Alvaro commented that many merchants are willing to help on the process. He said: “Some pieces were supplied. For instance, a company from the region that understands its cultural

and symbolic values will provide the brakes". About the engine, it was also at Vera Cruz’ basement. However, according to Alvaro it had been cannibalized. The only usable pieces were block and crankshaft. As city hall demanded Anastácio to be operational, the restorer’s idea was installing a more modern Chevrolet engine, just so it get to move around.

“We will restore this vehicle, but it cannot be perfect. This is a service truck, needs to endure wear. People will use it, children will climb. If we turn it into a museum’s piece no one will be able to touch it. Besides, in the movies it was a damaged truck. So, we don't want to kill its identity nor purpose”, concluded Alvaro about the service he will perform in this cultural patrimony.

All they had to change was the fridge. Only because it wasn’t the

one they had in mind. Besides, they installed a tilt. However, according to Paulo what is really surprising them in this trip are the people they meet. “We met people on the road that surprised us more than landscapes.
