Old vehicle’s restauration An old vehicle restauration process can be very involving for enthusiasts. The real fuel that actually makes it all happen is passion. The cost for a car owner is expensive and yet, at the same time it isn’t too profitable for the restorer. What moves such industry is the will and the love for the profession and historical automobiles. Moreover, a restauration can take a long time. There’s a certain script to be followed. However, hard work is necessary in order for it to be done properly. The
How the restauration process works and what’s the fuel for all of it? minimum term is 18 months. First, the car is unassembled. This phase is like a diagnostic; it is used to evaluate what the vehicle needs. After that, the paint is removed, the idea is finding out bodywork’s condition. Thenceforth, begins the funnel process for welds, rusty pieces’ exchange and all other procedures that aim vehicle’s perfect conditions. Then, the car goes to a preparation
phase. Here, all surface imperfections are corrected and it becomes ready for painting. Only now reassembling begins. Also, mechanics and electrical systems are verified. The engine is prepared and assembled along with the suspension and other items. Such as, electrical whip, headlights, horn, watch and others. Lastly, tapestry is remade with all the polishing and finishing services.

Brief history of the assembler’s arrival in Brazil
he history of Volkswagen do Brasil began in 1949. In this year, many researches where performed and indicated that Brazil was the most suitable country for the VW factory outside Germany. In 1950, some people imported the first units of the Beetles. It was a success, what happened due to is robustness and maintenance simplicity. The Grupo Monteiro e Aranha from Rio de Janeiro took a development proposal straight to Volkswagen in Wolfsbourg city. That’s when the decision of assembling vehicles in Brazil was born. Volkswagen and Monteiro Aranha became partners in a proportion of 80% and 20% respectively. Company’s development occurred in two phases. First, in 1953 all that was happening here was simple vehicles assembling. It passed in a rental storage at Manifesto Street in Ipiranga’s neighborhood. There, 2820 cars where made into 1957, year that ignited the second phase, which consisted of vehicle’s production in the country. VWB plans boosted when the Federal Brazilian government decided to create a group to tend industries expansion, the GEIA. Such organ, established grounds for fast automobile’s development. Thus, in the same year VW began settling a factory in the Anchieta road at the city of São Bernardo do Campo. The first vehicle officially made by the company in Brazil was a Kombi. It was presented in September of 1957 with 50% of its parts nationalized. In 1959, 95% of all Beetle’s parts where already produced in the country. It collaborated to increase the productive chain of auto parts . The official inauguration of the factory occurred in November 18th of 1959. In such date, the president
of the republic, Juscelino Kubistcheck followed by São Paulo’s governor, Carvalho Pinto, Germany’s VW president, Heinrich Nordhoff and Brazil’s VW president Friedrich Schultz-Wenk rode a convertible Beetle. The image of these four man is one of the most historical of the brand. When productiveness reached high rates, factory’s terrain had to increase. It became 81 times bigger than the original. Besides, the number of workers also went from 796 to almost 40 thousand, while services network and sales went from 81 to 800. One million vehicles where produced by July 1970. All employees where presented that year with a gold medal. In March 1972, the Beatle reached the historical number of one million units produced in Brazil. Anchieta’s factory is considered an industrial complex. The place shelters press shop, bodywork framing, painting, final assembling and researching center, planning and development of new products. In 1976, the company constructed a second factory. This one was built in Taubaté city. Its investments were focused in production process technology and environmental protection. Yet, it had well qualified professionals. In October 1996, VW initiated engine production in a new factory at São Carlos. Its purpose was suppling the productive process. Then, in January 1999, the first factory outside São Paulo was inaugurated. It resided in São José dos Pinhais at Paraná state. This installation is one of the most modern factories of VW's group. It is also known as one of the largest employers of Parana. Besides, it is a reference of national quality for the automobile’s sector.

The Beetle Club ABC began twenty years ago, in 1988. Their objective was uniting a group of friends and Volkswagen vehicle’s owners to participate in expositions, gatherings and family tours. The idealizers of this project were Edivaldo Fernandes and Luciano Brandolim.
The first official event organized by the club happened in 2000 at March 19th. For this gathering, a “beetlage” was set up. Such carriage went from São Bernardo do Campo into Jundiaí.
One of the founders, Edivaldo, also known as Edi, explained: “What we want is making friends and meeting people that are also passionate about old vehicles. The name “Beetle” is just a focus. Our expositions also involve other cars. In this year’s first edition, which happened in the national Beetle day at Golden Square Shopping had even the famous Mamonas Assasinas’ yellow Brasilia”.
Moreover, the Beetle Club ABC has an environment thought for the family. Edi affirmed: “Is not just a man’s thing. What we want is for the whole family to gather. That’s why, we brought the event to a shopping mall, there’s enough structure in this place for everyone. Now, my daughters and my wife join me in the meetings. My children notice when I’m wearing the club’s t-shirt and ask, animated, where we are going”.
However, Edi yet pointed about the volunteer work done by the club. He wanted to warn that there is no exchange for dontions. The purpose is instigating people to give without expecting something in return. “In the Beetle’s national day we collected 244 kilos of food and 84 liters of milk. Such items were donated to the Associação São Luiz, which helps children in São Bernardo do Campo”, commented Edi.
To learn more about the club, join their community activities or exposing in the events just look for them online. In their website it is possible finding out the address of monthly meetings and many other information. Just “google” the name “Fusca Club ABC” or access through the logo underneath.
ALfA ROMEo 145 A car to enjoy Text: Rafael Pires Photos: Rafael Pires
T
he Alfa Romeo 145 was released in 1994 and can give a driver lots of adrenalin. It is imported to Brazil by Fiat, Alfa Romeo’s retainer. Its dirigibility is great. In a certain way, the 145 makes the driver
ride it on a sporting way.
Moreover, it is a good looking car with a classical
90’s style and yet, very trustworthy mechanically. Some owners even say maintenance isn’t too expensive, is all about knowing where to find the pieces.
The engine is a Twin Spark with 16 valves. This
technology was used for the first time in 1914 in the Alfa Romeo Grand Prix. By the 80’s, it was adapted for touring vehicles. The idea was increasing performance and making the car suitable for pollutant emission rules.
Although silent, the sound of this machine when
it accelerates is a full plate for enthusiasts. Nevertheless, the T-Spark is economic, efficient and vigorous. However, this engine wasn’t in the first 145s, they used to come equipped with a Boxer. Its first generation, the CF1, was only introduced in 1995.
There are nine models of 145s. Alfa Romeo even
produced two special ones for Brazil. They were called “Elegant Brasile” and had a L4 1.8 or 2.0 Twin Spark engine with two candles for cylinder.
This particular vehicle has a 16 V 1.4 DOHC
Twin Spark. It consumes gasoline and the power reaches 105 HP, while the torque is 124 Nm at 4600 rpm. Besides, it has 1370 cc and four lined cylinders, forward traction,
manual gear with five velocities and weights 1135 kilos. This car was produced between 1997 into 2001. Today, it can be found at automobiles fairs at attractive prices. The 145 1.4 Twin Spark goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 11.2
seconds. Its maximum speed is 185 km/h and consumes something like 8.5 km/l. Moreover, one of its positive points most mentioned by owners in opinion websites is the stability.
Yet, they were offered with many serial items.
Among them, air conditioning, electric trio, hydraulic steering wheel, light allow wheels with 6x15 inches and also ABS brakes, sunroof and airbags were optional.

gurgel xef
gurgel The right car for the wrong time XEF was the first minicar produced by the Brazilian automobile’s manufacturer Gurgel Motores S/A. Its presentation happened in 1981 in São Paulo. This vehicle was a compact sedan adapted for the big city’s traffic. The idea for its construction came from João Conrado Amaral Gurgel when he was still in college.
This car uses the same mechanics as the Beetle.
The one in the photo had a VW 1600 air refrigerated engine with a simple carburetor. It consumed gasoline, had 48 HP and 10 kgfm of torque. Yet, there were other models with ethanol carburation that could reach 56 HP and 11.3 kgfm of torque. Maximum speed was 140 km/h and XEF would go from 0 to 100 km/h in 20 seconds. Its gear had four velocities and reverse. It used the same mark relationships and differential from the VW 1300.
Now about the chassis, it was manufactured by
Gurgel. It was laminated inside the fiber, which would give it more structural resistance and protection. This car’s dimensions were extremely reduced and there was no space for luggage, in its place there was a 55 liters’ tank.
From 1982 into 1986 only 145 XEFs were
produced. All of them are licensed and after a quick internet search it is possible finding out how many used ethanol and gasoline engines. The exact number

Some functions for Gurgel Motores S/A cars
are now indispensable for high technology cars. Back then, this machines already had wheels blocking system, which was a sort of manual traction control. Thus, it was possible to brake a single wheel and create torque in the one with adherence.
Yet, another factor that influenced in vehicles'
quality were the tests. They were rudimentary, but efficient. So, good functionality was practically guaranteed.
Gurgel’s proposal was producing 100%
national vehicles. During that time, mechanics were made by VW and later got replaced for one designed by the brand itself. It had a few issues, but all solvable.
The factory was assembled in 1969 at the
Cursino Avenue in São Paulo. In 1975, it was moved to Rio Claro. This company lasted 27 years and made 30 thousand genuinely Brazilian vehicles. is 58 and 87 vehicles, respectively.
The old car’s enthusiast and 100% motor
team’s test pilot, José Carlos Finardi, commented: “Amaral Gurgel was a great pioneer. His ideas were creative and bold. Moreover, he made amazing cars with almost nothing in his pocket. This XEF had a good consumption rate and if it wasn’t for ‘hidden forces’, today it could be very strong in the market”.

Almost all Camaros from this era were
assembled in USA. Only five other countries had factories. They were Belgium, Argentina, Philippines, Peru, Switzerland and Venezuela.
The vehicles' preparer, Sergio Pires, owned this
car for five years and said: “I loved Camaros since I was a boy. When I found this one, it was abandon, just left at a parking lot for twelve years. So, I brought it to my workshop and started to used it. I rode it for a year, into one day the engine broke. Then, I’ve decided
to restore the whole car. I’ve set up bigger rim wheels, remade the refinery, installed air conditioning and a 350 Small Block V8 with 5.7 liters. This engine was original and also an optional serial item. Although, this car had the 327 V8 engine before that. I also installed a Corvette 89 injection system to improve its efficiency because it was a carbureted vehicle. My idea was using this car on a daily basis, not as a collector.

The preparer yet said: “This system is good
because it isn’t a jerry-rig. It is a very well made and studied adaptation. That’s why, it isn’t necessary to cut the car, the assembly fits on it perfectly”.

Volvo presented this sporting model in 1954. Back then, its bodywork with glass fiber in reinforced polyester allied with the two sits made of this car a huge sensation. However, production only began in 1956. Many issues occurred and one year after, fabrication was closed. Only 67 units were made. Rumors point there’s another one, but that’s all supposition. Due to the Swedish weather, this convertible vehicle was developed for exportation. Iven so, most cars were sold in the country. The engine was a more developed version of the four cylinders L4 PV 4444, just as the basis of the standard components. Nevertheless, The P1900 had some differences installed to improve its performance. Like double carburation, upgraded valve command axle, bigger admission valves and compression rate. The car was capable of developing 70 bhp. Such initials mean Brake Horse Power; it was used by assemblers that loved power. Measurement was made with alternator, air filter, hydraulic wheel pump and starter engine removal. It also allowed the usage of dimensioned exhaust manifolds.
