HEALTHCARE ACCESS CERTIFICATION - CHAA
910.362.7909 | tparris@cfcc.edu
This program is designed to prepare students to earn certification as a Healthcare Access Associate (CHAA) or Healthcare Access Manager (CHAM) through the National Association of Healthcare Access Management (NAHAM). The CHAA certification is designed to maximize the knowledge base for the medical insurance biller. The certification equips the medical insurance biller with credentials needed to maintain high level subject matter expertise in medical billing and regulatory guidelines associated with revenue cycle management and patient access. Students will learn the principles of medical billing and insurance, and the skills and knowledge required to provide outstanding service in all areas of the healthcare process.
Medical billers play a vital role in the connection between health care providers, patients, and insurance companies. Medical billing is the process of submitting and following up on claims with health insurance companies to receive payment for services rendered by a healthcare provider. As a medical biller, you’ll need to read patient charts to determine medical history, including diagnoses and treatments given. Understanding charge entry, claims transmission, payment posting, insurance follow-up, and patient follow-up are duties of a medical biller. Medical billing translates a healthcare service into a billing claim. The responsibility of the medical biller in a healthcare facility is to follow the claim to ensure the practice receives reimbursement for the work the providers perform. A knowledgeable biller can optimize revenue performance for the practice. For those new to healthcare it is recommended that you pursue the billing certification before the coding certification. CFCC is the only school in our eastern region that offers this program and is accredited with NAHAM. Certification exam is $145. CHAA exam payment is facilitated through naham.org. Courses should be taken in order as listed below.

• eeaston@cfcc.edu
“I’ve been in this industry for over 5 years. I started in the production department, and now, a few promotions later, I’m an important member of the Quality Department. My time in this industry has taught me that a lot of the myths like “They’re not high paying,” or “they’re filthy jobs,” are super untrue. They do, in fact, pay well and offer great benefits. Now is the perfect time to take advantage of these opportunities.”
—
Sam DiGregorio, Lead Inspector, HSM
“As the owner and CEO of a manufacturing company, I am both excited and impressed with CFCC’s Manufacturing Production Technician program. They have really hit the ball out of the park with the curriculum and opportunities that this program will provide! With over 350 manufacturers in the Cape Fear area companies will be lining up to interview graduates from this program. Having a pool of individuals that have such an in-depth knowledge of the skills required to succeed in a manufacturing career is an incredible opportunity for both the new hires and the companies employing them.”

Outboard Systems Technology Program Director Spencer Nickel (pictured above with Kurtz) keeps the coursework balanced between classroom and workshop time and applicable to all skill levels.
NEVER STOP LEARNING
Although Amanda knew her way around a toolbox, that experience was not a requirement to enroll in the Intro to Outboard Systems course. In Amanda’s classes, students ranged from beginners just starting their marine careers to current mechanics wanting to enhance their skill set.

Amanda found the introductory course interesting and enrolled in the second module, Midrange Marine Maintenance. During this course, Amanda realized she would enjoy doing this for a living. “While I was in the Midrange course, I found out that the third module, Inline Marine Maintenance, would be available in the spring semester,” Amanda shared. “I thought that if I’m going to make a career change, more training is going to help.”
FROM HOBBY TO OCCUPATION
Until the spring semester starts, Amanda is reviewing job opportunities and updating her resume. She considers Nickel’s advice to all his students about where to apply, how to go about it, and tips to ensure it’s a good place to work. “Amanda walked into the Outboard Systems program, interested in understanding her outboard. She will be walking out with a career,” Nickel commented. “Her aptitude, attention to detail, and passion for the product and science of how it works propelled her into the advanced classes. She has expanded and improved her skill set, making her a great asset to a future employer.”
IN-DEMAND CAREER
The job outlook for outboard technicians is looking favorable. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics (bls.gov) the job growth outlook for motorboat mechanics and service technicians is projected to be 5% or about 9,000 openings over the next decade.
Program info is on page 23 of this book.

CFCC GRADUATE BUILDS NEW CAREER IN THE CIVILIAN WORKFORCE
Brent Springer is a retired veteran who served with the Army Corps of Engineers. Among other tasks during his military career, Springer learned how to operate heavy equipment for building roads and bridges. Some projects involved road restoration and flood risk management following hurricanes such as Hurricane Florence. After retiring from the military, Springer decided to continue a civilian career in construction. He considered attending a four-year university, but learned that CFCC had exactly what he was looking for: Construction Management Technology. Because of CFCC’s affordability, he chose not to use his GI Bill which he can now transfer to his children and grandchildren.
CHANGE ORDER TO CIVILIAN WORK LIFE
For his new career, Springer had to learn how to work with civilian construction contracts. Through the Construction Management Technology program, Springer learned about residential contracts and business law. Lessons that helped him transition to residential construction.
SETTING THE FOUNDATION
While Springer’s construction background served as an added bonus for the program, it is not required to enroll in the program. The instructors start with basic concepts and build on those core elements as students advance through the program.
“The program covers everything from how to read a measuring tape, a set of blueprints, and getting a certificate of occupancy so clients can move into their home,” explained Springer. “This program is applicable to all experience levels from beginners to adult learners such as myself.”
BRENT SPRINGER
BUILDING THE CAREER
Springer graduated in May of 2022 and very shortly after, he accepted a position with KMD Construction as a superintendent.
He credits his training at CFCC with helping him find a job so quickly.
“It’s important to have connections in this industry because it’s competitive, but you set yourself apart with this degree,” Springer said. “In this program, you earn valuable certifications such as the OSHA. Employers are looking for certifications as well as a degree. This program gives you both.”
CONCRETE INDUSTRY GROWTH
The job outlook is favorable for Construction Managers. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, this career choice is expected to grow 8 percent or 41,500 openings over the next decade. The annual median wage for residential building construction managers is $84,810. The increasing complexity of construction technology is creating the demand for well-qualified managers.
“There’s a lot more bureaucracy on the federal side of housing versus the civilian side . These courses will make sure you know and understand the contract between you and the client . In a residential contract, there might be a change order and you will learn how to inquire about the changes and update the contract . ” —Brent Springer

WEBINAR: MESSAGING YOUR BUSINESS: THE FOUNDATION OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Small businesses, non-profits and startups are in need of strong communications. Coaches tell you to focus on the money first, but after launching more than 200 companies, can attest to the fact that you’re only as strong as the story you tell.
Knowing and focusing on your key message helps prioritize resources and efforts. In turn, it assures consistency in what, how and to whom you communicate.
Most importantly: strong messaging helps your customer know the value you add, and how to buy what you sell.
This hands-on workshop will guide you to develop a clear mission, vision, elevator pitch, and 50 word description. Bonus: your billboard (it’s not what you think!).

WEBINAR: MESSAGING YOUR BUSINESS: THE FOUNDATION OF EFFECTIVE COMMUNICATION
Small businesses, non-profits and startups are in need of strong communications. Coaches tell you to focus on the money first, but after launching more than 200 companies, they can attest to the fact that you’re only as strong as the story you tell.
