Mahamad El Haddad SHERWAL... A Sherwalista is Truly a Fashionista! Sherwal is a label for ethnic fashion with a contemporary twist. Authenticity and style lie at the heart of the Sherwal concept. The brand began crafting vintage-inspired harem pants in 2012, they were distinctively unique by using ethnic fabrics with buoyant bold prints to give them true character and soul, also featured authentic pieces of clothes, using embroidery, hand printing, personalized touches and playful details. Sherwal’s signature is its raw edge and ever changing designs that remain uninfluenced by trends, the brand is a style in itself, one that to a certain extent embodies a specific lifestyle. It stands for uniqueness, charm, boldness and glamour. The SS13 collection features African and Mexican tribal prints fused with electric summer beats. The Sherwalista woman is strong on the inside and shares her playfulness on the outside. With every collection, Hamsa Rabie, founder and designer of Sherwal, transforms a fusion of styles inspired by cultures, art forms and trends. AMINA K... Structured Pleats FW13/14 Amina Khalil the woman behind Amina K always makes sure to reinvent and evolve her brand in order to deliver exciting new concepts to her clients. The brand’s FW13/14 collection comes under the title of ‘Structured Pleats’; a collection that departs from the randomness of last season’s weaves to a more meticulous sophisticated finish. By pleating different fabrics such as wool, leather, cotton and gabardine, each piece has its own distinctive personality that reflects a more mature yet feminine and edgy effect at the same time. Black, navy, brown and grey are prominent colors of the collection, while checkered prints were a pleasant surprise. For the Amina K brand, this season it is less about layering and more about wearing statement pieces. Available @ www.facebook.com/AminaK.Egypt Amina K. Store, Zamalek. Beymen, Four Seasons Hotel Cairo at Nile Plaza. Asfour El Nil, Zamalek. Mounaya Gallery.

THE FASHION RUNWAY... A Step Forward for Egypt’s Fashion Industry Egyptians are obsessed with the way they look. Every creed and class takes a certain pride in the way they present themselves, as global trends find their way into every nook and cranny of our diverse country. However, despite being the land of cotton, we rarely end up wearing clothing that’s made locally, let alone pay attention to Egyptian designers. Some will argue that the problem is that there isn’t a platform to launch and support talented up and coming designers. Those people would be wrong. Red Square for events & activations, the organizing company for The Fashion Runway, promised that It’ll be quite the big celebration for the winners of the big competition. One designer, one hair stylist, one make-up artist, one female and one male model who are crowned champions will win a trip to Paris, just in time for fashion week next year. For all you budding fashion designers, the first selection process took place on October 26th and 27th, and required designers to submit a portfolio containing five designs, two of them being bridal gown sketches. At the same time, casting for models was held. Media and public figures were filtering through and selecting the best candidates, which was televised, and is available online on FR TV – the Fashion Runway’s YouTube channel. Judging the competition will be some of Egypt’s style elite, and the audience will also have a chance to vote for their favorite candidates via SMS. The winning designer will also get an internship with Hany El Beheiry, and will open up the famous designer’s runway show with their own collection on the second day of the event. Before you buy your wedding dress abroad, go to Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah and find a one-of-a-kind dream gown. Make no mistake; talented Egyptians are here and finally there is a platform to show off their fashionable gear.

ASK

ASK G for fashion advice, shopping dilemmas, seasonal trends & styling tips & tricks. Send to ghadir@alagabany.com. I’ve been veiled for more than 7 years now. I love being veiled and have no problem with it whatsoever. Problem is I don’t think I look trendy or elegant anymore being veiled. I feel that all my outfits are now loose, not classy and definitely outmoded. What should I do?? ……. Reham Veiled or not, it has nothing to do with being trendy or elegant, it’s the fashion approach that matters and not the veiling material whatsoever. You could look absolutely fashion forward being veiled while lots of other unveiled girls look absolutely bland. So try not to lose your touch because of the hair wrap. Mix and match clothes, restyle your wardrobe, think extreme fashion but conservative rather than revealing. Think out of the box and don’t miss shopping opportunities right in front of you. You could almost wear everything anybody else wears but just need a bit of creativity to keep it conservative yet not outmoded by any means.

Are leather and fur in this winter season ……Mona Lots of leather and tons of fur in lots of colors and millions of styles are featured this winter season. You will find them in jackets, shoes, skirts, pants, vests, bags, belts, dresses and practically everything else. Feel free to go crazy with fur and leather this winter and opt for the chic and luxurious Aspen look.

I’m 40 plus years old and I’m way over weight. To cut a long story short, nothing looks good on me and sometimes even nothing fits me. When I was younger, I was slimmer and took great care of my body. This weight issue is really depressing me and I’m becoming a very negative pessimistic person all the time. Thought dressing up nicely could cause a mood shift. Could you help me by any means? ….. Rehab Cheer up! Being over weight is not an obstacle in the road of being fabulous and fashionable whatsoever, you can even be more eye catching and way much more chic than all the gym bunnies around you if you study your body well and know how to dress for your body type. Avoid frumpy oversized items as they will only make you look bigger, instead try to emphasize your waistline and opt for fitted and slimming silhouettes. Nowadays a lot of high street fashion stores dedicate a section to plus sizes, for example H&M. Also there are specialty stores for plus sizes available now in Cairo that feature fashion forward and trendy clothes such as Marina Rinaldi, Evans and Ulla Popken. Moreover, any woman whatever her size is resort to slimming tricks such as shape wear that would give a very significant slimming illusion as well as smoother lines and silhouette. So revamp you wardrobe, celebrate your body and dress to impress!

Egyptian Cinema Golden Age

The Original Divas! By Mahamad El Haddad

CFR 6

Black & White;

words that instantly evoke the sense of being timeless, classic, chic, and undeniably elegant. You may think that we are talking about clothes here, but we are not, we are actually taking you on a fabulous trip down memory lane to the world of black and white Egyptian movies, where fashion greatness was originally made by the ORIGINAL Divas! Wide brimmed hats, oversized Jackie O sunglasses, full skirts and voluminous dresses, kitten heels and pearls marked this wonderful era of glamour and panache. To mention every glamourous Egyptian diva from the golden age would be next to impossible, so we might mention some, but surely each and everyone of them are forever cherished in our hearts. Soad Hosny (1943 - 2001) aka ‘Cinderella of the Arabic Screen’, and the diva of all divas, one that truly had it all; acting skills, a voice of a canary, a to die for charisma, and a fashion sense that puts fashion in fashionista. Nadia Lotfy (1938) the Egyptian’s screen blonde diva, probably one of the most beautiful blondes that walked this earth. Remember ‘El Naddara El Sawdaa’ (The Black Shades); a black and white movie that can be considered a capsule collection of picturesque golden age fashion. Faten Hamama (1931) aka ‘Lady of the Arabic Screen’, the most honored and celebrated actress in the Middle East, a diva that introduced the everlasting relation between romance and fashion. Full gowns, satin gloves, diamonds and tiaras; a diva that single handedly romanticized fashion. Hind Rostom (1931 - 2011) aka ‘Queen of Seduction of the

Arabic Screen’; the most celebrated sex symbols of the Middle East. A blond bombshell that could have easily told Marilyn Monroe “move over sister”, and a diva that made fashion sexy while being a class act all the

way. And last but not least Dalida (1933 - 1987) the iconic Egyptian songstress that serenaded the world in 10 languages, an international diva that received 55 gold records and a diamond disc, and a fashionista that wowed the world on stage with her unforgettable signature diva look. The golden age of the Egyptian cinema; a decade of allure and sophistication that till the present day is considered a timeless and endless inspiration.

Azza Fahmy ‘Suma’ Collection

Culture’14 Line

Azza Fahmy Jewellery creates a jewellery collection as a tribute to internationally renowned Egyptian singer ‘Umm Kulthoum,’ (1904-1975) known widely as ‘Star of the East’ and labeled as the ‘greatest Arabic female singer in history’ till present time. The diva has left an artistic legacy behind her and construed a dramatic imprint onto Egypt’s culture in the 20th century, often referred to as ‘Egypt’s fourth pyramid.’ A humble country girl with a majestic voice that turned her into Egypt’s ‘Lady’ and knighted by the King, Umm Kulthoum has been recognized for her strong patriotic and altruistic stances, dedicating many of her concerts to raising funds for Egypt during the time of war in the 1960’s. Umm Kulthoum was characterized by her pitch black hair, iconic diamond jewels, and signature chiffon handkerchief, the latter now kept at her museum in Cairo. Azza Fahmy’s tribute collection’s pieces are all inspired by the icon’s influential persona and many of her individual jewellery items. Many of the words inscribed in the collection reflect on the diva’s sublime music and cultural history. The collection features a selection of sterling silver and 18ct gold statement neck pieces, bangles, bracelets, earrings, and rings, with all pieces engraved with documentations as a form of tribute and honor to the poets and composers behind the magnificent music and voice of this Egyptian legend.

I cherish her so much for her admirable artistic, charitable, and nationalistic affairs.” The ‘Suma’ collection part I is now available at www.azzafahmy.com and Azza Fahmy boutiques, to be followed by part II on November 7th, 2013

Awards Season 2013 (part 4)

Emmys Best & Worst Dressed By Mahamad El Haddad

Carrie Preston in Romona Keveza and M.C.L clutch. The True Blood star truly glowed in this peachy-pink hued mermaid gown. Instead of looking washed out in such a pale color with her fair skin tone, Carrie’s fiery red hair provided the perfect yet unexpected pop of color, while black piping was brilliantly placed on the bodice for a color break. We all just want to sign on that dotted line on the back: #Superb!

Laura Dern in Naeem Khan. Okay… so that is a frock that deserved its own winning category in this year’s Emmy Awards! A dress that just has it all; beauty, sophistication and romance. Laura looked effortlessly glamourous in the most chic tone of pink with beading that will just blow your mind away. #OUR FAVORITE!

CFR 10

Best

Julie Bowen in Zac Posen and Marchesa clutch. The Modern Family star glided on the red carpet like a glamourous flamenco in this blush trumpet style gown. The dramatic ruffled hemline complimented Julie’s petite figure and the fit was just tailored to perfection.

Kiernan Shipka in Delpozo and Jimmy Choo sandals. The Mad Men starlet is a blooming little fashionista in this fresh and youthful floral dress with overlay organza and applique pop out flowers. Most young Hollywood starlets opt for revealing and risque dresses as they try to grow up too fast to attract attention, not Miz Shipka though; always fashionable yet cute and age appropriate.

Worst

Amanda Peet in Erdem and Jimmy Choo clutch. A classic case of the FRANKEN-DRESS; way too many different dresses put together, and NOT in a good way. The high neckline, the sleeves, the midriff, the pencil skirt, and the overlay skirt; that is one dress suffering a severe case of identity crises!

Paula Abdul wearing… well no one knows! We guess no designer wanted their name on this hideousness! Paula darling when will it ever stop?! Fashion disaster after the other and it is actually getting worse. The tacky and cheap looking gold lame fabric and the frumpy fit is such a horror of a look, a look so wrong it couldn’t even be saved by that Chanel clutch. You would think that this shot is photoshopped, but unfortunately it is not, YES the dress makes her look that disproportionate! Poor Paula looks like wrapped up damaged goods in gold foil. #leftovers gone BAD!

Connie Britton in Naeem Khan and Stuart Weitzman ‘Isis’ clutch. With all the choices in world at the palm of your hand, why choose a heavy Medieval curtains inspired dress?! The gown is such a weighed down choice that looks like it weighs a ton, does nothing to Connie’s figure and for sure the matchy matchy clutch and tacky gold ombre effect nails did not help!

Lena Dunham in Prada. Yes it may be Prada, and yes it might be a nice dress, but definitely not for you Lena honey. The Girls star fails to impress in this ill-fitting floral gown that did not flatter her body whatsoever, and matchy matchy eye makeup was the last nail in coffin of that mismatched look.
