Dear Fashionistas,

Allaga is a fresh collective brand focusing on Egyptian heritage with a modern twist. The brand was initiated as a part of a joint project between the German Arab Chamber of Commerce, The Fashion & Design Centre, German Global Project Partners and Import Shop Berlin. Now, Allaga is independent with its group of local designers working together to release their dream of an Egyptian fashion brand with a distinguishable identity. Allaga’s latest collection is blessed with the touch of Egyptian craftsmen and artisans handmade details from Siwa Oasis and Sinai Bedouin tribes. The designs are beautifully crafted and dashed with their capital city spirit.

AYAH EL RAKHAWY... Turbanista for the Modern Day Fashionista Ayah El Rakhawy, the founder of Turbanista, has always opted for a different, unique look and had a passion for fashion. Since she is veiled herself, she likes to constantly change how she wears her hijab; being Inspired by many different cultures she experienced during her travels, she decided to launch her very own turbans line which was met by great feedback. The brand just launched a new line of trendy, ready-to-wear turbans for veiled and non-veiled women to enjoy the look as much as Ayah does! Turbanista 2nd edition is the brand’s latest collection for FW13/14. The collection focused on winter colours like burgundy, mustard and royal blue along with all the basic colours. Turbanista also added special prints and fabrics for this collection like zebra, leopard and striped turbans in different colours, and fabrics such as suede in python print, velvet and crepe. KRAK BABY... The Laced Collection The Laced Collection; a collection which includes a hoody, snapback cap, beanie, sweaters and a baseball tee, all under one label, “Laced.” The brand utilized the word ‘laced’ to refer to the mixing of both Eastern and Western cultures. The Genesis design consists of the pyramid known as the “2nd Great Seal” which can be found on the one dollar bill, and the Eye of Horus in the place of the “All Seeing Eye.” This design plays to the idea of the West using ancient Eastern symbols in their culture and over time giving them a negative/ evil connotation. However, the Eye of Horus is often regarded as a symbol of protection in Eastern culture. The Genesis design brings together that which is good and evil, all under Eastern symbolism. Krak Baby is rightfully taking back the symbols that make up our rich past. The Heritage design plays on the popularity of Arabic calligraphy in modern Western culture. The Heritage design visually comes across as a simple stylized ‘KB’, however the ‘K’ is made up of the Arabic letters for ‘Krak’ and the ‘B’ is the Arabic letters for ‘Baby.’ Each hoody package includes a small piece of papyrus with the Heritage design spray-painted on it, which adds an new element to the theme of East/West since graffiti is a Western art medium and papyrus is an ancient canvas from the East. Julia Roberts in Dolce and Gabbana and Harry Winston Jewellery. The mega movie star has always been known for her quirky sense of fashion, and she did it once again! The combination of a tailored menswear crisp white shirt with a soft feminine black strapless dress was a stroke of genius playing with the hard and soft hot trend. The whole look had a vintage glam vibe with the 60s bouffant and wing-tipped eye makeup. #Sleek&Chic Julie Bowen in Carolina Herrera. The Modern Family star rocked this two tone frock on the red carpet. The crimson and plum colour combo was so unexpected and fresh, echoing the ever so chic colour blocking trend. The whole look from the structured puffed cap sleeves, fabric and colour choices to the silhouette was plain and pure eye candy! #OurFavorite! Cate Blanchette in Armani Prive Couture and Chopard earrings. The always chic movie star wowed us again with this black lace overlay mermaid dress that is so beautiful and light as air. The high collar and puffed sleeves give off a sophisticated victorianesque feel to it. Sofia Vergara in Zac Posen and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. The sultry Latina always makes sure that all eyes are on her when she steps out on the red carpet. Vergara departs from her usual figure-hugging mermaid gowns to a full skirted dramatic gown. Pairing the solid black dress with a bright pop of colour statement necklace piece, just sealed the deal with this full on glam look.

Emma Watson in Christian Dior and Roger Vivier shoes. The Harry Potter starlet opted for a bizarre combo of an orange dress, skinny black pants and of all the colours in the world, violet shoes. Well… that turned out to be a miserable failure. Where is that magic wand when you need it to zap this hot mess somewhere far away where it cannot hurt our eyes no more! Sandra Buloock in Prabal Gurung and Jimmy Choo shoes. Why Sandy why?! Bad fabric, wrong silhouette, and tacky colour combination. Even though the mega movie star was killing it on the red carpet lately with stunning choices, she totally and absolutely missed the mark with this cheap looking knock off that did nothing for her other than landing her on our worst-dressed list. Better comebacks Sandy… better comebacks.

Tina Fey in Carolina Herrera. Tina honey, the idea is to make us laugh and NOT laugh about you. The 30 Rock star went for an unflattering silhouette with a more unflattering print. What woman chooses to add on volume to her hips voluntarily… well we guess now we know who. Zoe Saldana in Prabal Gurung, Christian Louboutin shoes, Bottega Veneta clutch, and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. Seriously are you kidding us with this?! Well congratulations Zoe, you have managed to pull off one of the tackiest and gaudiest looks on the red carpet. The dress is so horrendous one can never know were to begin; well lets just say this is one dress that is too ugly for words… LITERALLY!

Luxury is ...

By AHMED SABRY Creative Director of SABRY MAROUF

sabry@sabrymarouf.com

Exclusivity? Privilege? The unattainable? Looking back at my initial ideas, all I could picture were private jets, sports cars and all that plush. And then I thought of writing about our brand. But what exactly, which is the Lux part of the process in Sabry & Marouf terms? Does lux originate in the idea, the execution of it, or its communications? Because thinking about it in retrospect, there is luxury throughout the whole process in a way, though not equally of course. So I sought to look deeper into the real essence Luxury. It is my belief that luxury is subjective, and relative. One’s own perception of what he or she interprets as “comfortably excessive” shapes the idea of luxury. It depends on each person’s own experiences, just like highend speakers to me can sound extremely perfect in how it performs and distributes sounds, but a sound engineer may think very differently about the same speakers. Or how an average joe would consider coming back home to family and familiarity as a luxury whereas someone else may not.

was last week I believe, I’m not sure - The days start getting quite confusing once you are running on auto pilot for several weeks. My team and I just produced, developed and launched an avantgarde fashion accessory collection with a successful launch featuring performance by sound artist Bosaina. We did it all in days, myself, my managing partner Marouf and a team of 6 inspiring human beings. It was very stressful to say the least but very rewarding.

I feel rather worn out, for I am a twenty something year old aspiring artist trying to make it in an almost non-existent fashion industry in Egypt! The once Capital of fashion in the Middle East back in the day - well not any more, and somebody has to say it! It must change, and I think the very nice editor of this very cool publication would agree with me, that is why he is doing what he is doing, and that is why I do what I do. So Mr Chief Editor of CFR Abdallah Roushdi gives me a call and asks me to write a piece for his Opinion Page for this month, and I replied “OK, great! I don’t see why not, what about?” I asked. “Luxury“ he replied. Luxury?! I thought, and since I work in fashion and retail, this should be easy. But really, what is Luxury – Is it Excess?

My own perception of luxury is ever evolving as I gain life experience, we constantly evolve, and we are never the same people. Experiences change things and change our minds. And it is not that we complicate things as we grow, it is life complexities that add layers worth consideration. Luxury can take a less materialistic meaning and can become a metaphor. For example, It is a luxury to be able to do what you love. It is a luxury to have enough time to do all the things you want. It is a luxury to be carefree. It is a luxury to work with such talented people, etc. There is even a sense of luxury in this moment, sitting on my desk thinking, typing, and listening to Chopin playing in the background and I know that I have the time to finish, send this off, and get some much needed sleep. Luxury, if I can sum it up is all that elevates you to appreciate life’s fine things, regardless of materiality.

You sit upon the heads of kings and adorn the bodies of maidens. A touch of sun in a grain of earth. Those dazzled by your charms have gone to war for you, nations have risen and fallen in your honor, men have died to get closer to you and yet you remain hard and cold. Desired by all but attained by a lucky few, I must have you, and all I want is more. Symbol of excess Symbol of success. Gold!
