Dear Reader, Exactly one year ago I wrote my first and only letter from the editor as I launched the first issue of Cairo Fashion Report, and here I am today hopefully starting a tradition with the 1st year anniversary issue. As I look over all 12 issues of 2013 and thinking back to the journey I have had and the people I have met I feel very grateful for all the help and support I have received.

2013 has been a productive year, the CFR team has grown from being just one person to a full team and several contributors that help in making each issue as interesting as possible. Our issues have grown from being 16 pages to this current issue being 24 pages long. The Fashion industry has grown with more talents and concepts popping up all around and 2013 has seen several Fashion events that were interesting to say the least.

Now as we start 2014, I remain hopeful. Looking forward to meeting more talents and more fruitful collaborations in the future. Finally as I had said a year ago, I would like to personally invite all you readers to join us on this continued journey.

The Fashion Runway Finale Red Square Agency for events and activations brought to you “The Fashion Runway”, the first fashion competition of its kind across the Middle East. Within fashion key players and celebrities, the competition started last October with the selection day, and after three months of hard work starting with the organizing company “Red Square” to the competitors and last but not least the Juries, the Fashion Runway’s finale took place on the 12th and 13th of December. The competition’s closing ceremony featured the Egyptian fashion designer Hany El Behairy, which took place at Sofitel Cairo El Gizera Hotel.

The Juries included Ragaa el Gedawy, Hany el Behairy, Youssef Spahi, Mohamed Abdel Hamid, Eman Afifi, Moahmed tolba, Mohmed Elsagheer and the guest of honor super star Doraa. The Event also included a colorful fashion show by Jotun, the main sponsor of The Fashion Runway.

Fair Trade Egypt Turns 15!

Fair Trade Egypt (FTE) marks its historic 15th anniversary. Formerly called Egypt Crafts. FTE was born in 1998 through an initiative from NSCE (North South Consultant Exchange), a consultancy firm working in the field of sustainable development, and COSPE (Cooperzione per lo Sviluppo dei Paesi Emergenti), an Italian NGO working with the Italian Cooperation. Together, they decided to establish an equitable business model based on Fair Trade principles for the local artisans of Egypt. Fair Trade Egypt developed independently from these projects to become Egypt’s first Fair Trade producer network and retailer. Since its inception, FTE had a long-term goal to alleviate poverty in the marginalized areas of Egypt. FTE’s mission is to empower local communities by offering disadvantaged artisans marketing and support services while promoting the application of Fair Trade principles as a cultural, social and environmentally responsible business ideal. Currently FTE supports over 30 artisan groups, which translates into more than 2,600 individual artisans all over Egypt from Fayoum, Aswan, Qena, Assiut, Marsa Matrouh, Siwa, Sohag, North Sinai, Behera, Marsa Allam and Cairo. In marking Fair Trade Egypt’s anniversary, FTE’s General Manager and Board Director of the World Fair Trade Organization Ms. Mona El Sayed, organized an evening of celebration at their newly renovated showroom in Zamalek. A number of guests discussed and shared FTE’s milestones. Attendees also enjoyed an exclusive video narrating the process of production of some of the products that artisans produce from the moment of crafting it until the customer purchases the handmade craft at the store. In 2013 alone, Fair Trade Egypt has reached over 700 artisan beneficiaries of developmental activities which included literacy workshops, medical convoys and artisans’ equipment endorsement, which was possible through the cooperation of the Global Partners Project, NGO in Germany.

How did you start as a makeup artist?

At the beginning, I took many courses in fashion design, tattoo design, kids’ behaviour and makeup artistry. The latter took my attention the most, so I studied at Atelier Paris Academy and Makeup Forever.

What does being a makeup artist mean to you? And do you have any other passions?

Through makeup, I am able to express beauty in addition to delivering messages through makeup artistry and introducing modern makeup in Egypt.Yes, am passionate about Kids’ behaviour and helped in some special needs Kids’ institutions.

What part of your job do you like best? And which part do you like least?

The part I like the most is when my client feels more beautiful and confident about herself after applying makeup. While the part I dislike is when the client forces me to apply makeup that doesn’t match my taste/ modern makeup School.

What do you use as inspiration for your work? nothing but my taste, because at the end of the day that is what differentiates makeup artists from one another.

What is the one piece of beauty advice you swear by and suggest all women follow?

Always go for simplicity but at the same time to know the difference between being simple and being boring.

For all the aspiring makeup artists out there, what steps you suggest they take in order to be successful in their career?

It will seem a bit cliche but you have to fight forward to reach what you want. It took me 9 years to reach the level am in and the goal I want.

Are there any upcoming projects you would like to share with our readers?

Yes, In April I will be out there in many different malls in a booth to give makeup tips and everyone is welcomed. The schedule will be posted on my Facebook page soon.

Most of us under-estimate, or rather have not truly grasped the power of clothing on who we are as people, the impact it has on the building of our individual characters and then the effect it has on the people around us. Our clothing is, in fact, an extension of who we are, it is the most obvious form of self expression, and the first thing people tend to judge us based on. So why is it that so many of us don’t allow our clothing to do justice to who we are? The answer is simple, it has more to do with fear than anything else. We are afraid of standing out, because what if we stand out and people receive it negatively? What will happen if we attempt to show the world who we truly are and the world rejects it? What then?

On our road to self-discovery, all of us wish to experiment with our clothing. Often times we are influenced by what other people deem as acceptable or appropriate. The problem with that idea is that we spend our self-discovery journey trying desperately to live up to other people’s expectations and not really trying to truly understand who we are. We wake up 10 years later, completely having lost ourselves, with no knowledge of who we are, nor our likes or dislikes and find ourselves completely disoriented. At which point, one will realize they still don’t have the approval of others nor themselves. That realization is then followed shortly after by regret and disappointment in our choices. It’s exhausting having to attempt to live up to other people’s expectations because, as I’m sure you all have realized, you never actually will.

So then what does one do? I think that one of the keys to understanding ourselves and finding out who it is we truly are and what we want to do with our lives is to really be true to ourselves. Heck, if we want to waltz around with a garbage bag then that’s what we should do. The journey is not stable and certainly never consistent, but that’s where the beauty lies. You may feel like dressing in a 60’s Audrey Hepburn type dress one day and the next in a bohemian rhapsody of loose

fabrics and colors, and that’s all ok. We aren’t meant to be consistent in our moods and feelings so then why expect that we should be that way with our clothing. Whatever you feel like doing at the moment, that is what you should do. We are allowed to be all those different things because, in fact, that is partially what defines us as human beings. In allowing ourselves to be all those different things, we then find out our likes and dislikes, tastes and preferences bringing us one step closer to internal harmony. Who we are on the inside should absolutely be reflected on the outside, in the way we dress.

So, all that is good and well, but where does one begin? I suppose the first step in making anything happen is just to do it. Wake up one day, stand in front of your closet and put on the one thing that speaks to you, the thing that makes you happiest, the one thing you would put on if you didn’t do so much thinking. The second step would be waking up the next morning and doing the same thing until dressing the way you feel becomes a part of who you are. The best way I know to make anything happen, is just to take that step and do it. Do it until you can’t do anything else but that. Until your honesty with your clothing spills over into every other aspect of your life so that you have no other choice than to be entirely true to who you really are.

Fashion is more than just throwing on what the media says is trendy or what other people claim will make you fit in. Fashion is about discovering our own identities through one of the most obvious forms of self-expression. Our characters aren’t all the same, we are all massively different in such beautiful ways. So why not let our clothing truly reflect who it is we are and why not let our clothing help guide us to who we are. The key is to remain true to yourself and to be conscious of how you are feeling and what your thoughts and needs are. Throw out all the rules you were taught, throw out the opinions of your surrounding environment, throw out everything you had thought to be right or wrong and start over. Be honest with yourself about who you truly want to be and then allow your clothing to reflect that.

If you don’t know who you truly are at the moment, then allow your honesty in how you dress, guide you to finding yourself. Recognize, that it is that honesty that will empower you and give you the courage to be who you are and in turn will empower others around you to do the same.”
